After being bombarded by some veterans groups and lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle, Eric Shinseki resigned Friday as secretary of Veterans Affairs, saying he wanted to avoid being a distraction as the nation tries to fix the scandal in the delivery of healthcare to veterans.
Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned Friday, after more than a month of battling criticism about access to care and tampering with official wait lists at VA health centers. At a meeting with President Barack Obama, during which Mr. Shinseki presented the VA's internal findings of improper scheduling procedures and long wait times across the VA health system, the retired general offered to resign to give a new VA leader the chance to fix the systemic problems at the department. After meeting with Secretary Eric Shinseki of Veteran Affairs this morning President Obama tried to stop increasing calls for firm action, ie the resignation of the Secretary, on the growing VA scandal involving fraudulent record-keeping that covered up excessive and sometimes deadly waiting times for veterans at VA facilities.
