The decision by House Republican leaders to add a balanced-budget amendment requirement to Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) debt plan is shifting the balance ahead of a Friday vote on the measure. Republicans said as many as 10 to 20 lawmakers said they would support Boehner’s measure with the addition of the new language, including key fiscal hawks Rep. The debt ceiling deadline is days away, but something unusual is happening in Congress. Rather than playing the short game, and following the old tradition of kicking important budget decisions down the road, dozens of senators are building the case to think long.
