This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck saga. The company lift went public on Friday and it was a success please. You know people were diving into the cheers cheers went up in value. These two or three ago. The company seems to be showing cracks in its foundation talked about the Prosser talked about how Amazon. Is planning to slash prices at whole foods high everybody's buried Christine with you here on late Tuesday morning. And the list IP you know continues to dominate the news was big yesterday Christine does tech shares were down almost 12%. That's right that's right and people are wondering how they're going to be performing today would he think area are they gonna recover. Well I think he use a lot of things that the underwriter primarily JPMorgan can do. In the first few days to stabilize the stock price. I think the real proof on this company will be. Where is sit in nine or twelve months because that's when the insiders are allowed to start selling their shares Kristi so let's say you worked there. And you had to you know a thousand shares. Six months from now. You're gonna be allowed to sell and you might use that money to buy a house or would it would whatever. That's what I think you really find out what this company's made of I mean it was a tough one to really be excited about buying. Because yet they have revenues of two billion dollars and yes their growing current like crazy. But on revenues of two billion dollars Christine they lost almost a billion. That's rate and you know to your point about its underwriters being given the option to purchase. Some more of their shares. My understanding is they only have about four point 75. Million shares. Mom. You know with. As a possibility to to purchase and so I I'm not sure that's enough to prop up the stock if it continues to kind of underperform and you know. You know you're right. Right with it to be right now it's down I've been down about 1% talent. You know the EEF to see an end and under British typically only support the stock during the first few days. And then after that it's gonna float on its own you know originally I think we need to remember though it was priced at 62 dollars a share. It well we you know they they knew they could get more than that so they took it so. You know I'd say if it gets down to under sixty dollars a share then. Then you have some real issues how do you think this is gonna impact beaten her appeal which is expected in middle me it doesn't seem to. Bode well for Avery does it and that's the so many analysts are saying is while that you know flip can't hold its IPO price. Then you know things don't look good for Hoover as well in terms of its ability and and it also might impact what Hoover can prices it tries to grab for its IPO. Actually surprised that they were able to. On price it's so much higher ten dollars a share higher. Then what they initially expected and it looks like the markets agreeing given the fact that you know they brought it down to closer to the original 62 dollars a share. I think you have an X stock like this or stock like FaceBook can have a lot of individual investor. Money coming into it not as opposed institutional money and a lot of people are big fans of both lift and do burned they were big fans of FaceBook. And they plow into the stock if you're although Christine. FaceBook shares rallied on the first day but then they fell to about half of their IPO price yet shortly thereafter in the and they recovered quite nicely. Interest and I guess I'm just kind of wondering you know when I look at a company like face but the thing that still fundamentally confuses me about a company like lift decide it's. It's defined as a technology company. And be a feast but clearly is technology accompanying you could see. You know potential difference revenue driver is going forward with advertising and all of that was left I'm just not seeing it now I feel like I'm missing something. Cooper is due when they go beat the story and numbers a little different now they have. Whoever eats in their little more diversified in their global as opposed to being just here in the United States. But the valuations are high and he would talk about valuing over a 120 billion dollars. They you know itty. Be there is there a lot of people who are skeptical. And I include myself in that camp I did not buy shares of live that he had people asking me about it and I said look I'm not buying it and I'm not buying it would be. You know you'd be bad faith of my part to suggest you buy it. And paper to do they want to do anyway hazy the lots of people Hussein wanted to buy it any whip up your stood your Blackberry thanks. Hooper I definitely I gonna wait and see with them the numbers look like a roach and we'll start to see that too. Well if I hate duke go in the middle may. Then that we'll start seeing that about five weeks that equity interest. Largest. Spanish in the story but Tesla and their model us. Yeah and the fact that hackers are stirring use little stickers to trick the auto pilot in some of its cars into the wrong lane that's kind of a scary prospect I have to say I've always been a little bit skeptical Barry. About all of these you know automatic. On driving. Features that they're coming out perjury now it it just seems to make them very very vulnerable to attack. You know being with the story I thought it was some ways the hacking into the actual car. What they're doing is they're putting stickers on roadways. That deceive the car. In the thinking that there's another team. So like it's it's not like they got into the vehicle right date they got the they figured out what kind of mechanism on the roadway would deceive the car. It's I look at that as being a little bit different than and hacking into the vehicle though I do. The AC app still big proponent of Jarvis Karzai and I think that technology. Will thrive. But I think it's still several years away and in stories like this just make people more nervous. Yeah although they you know they have discovered other things and one of the things son theme report was talking about. Was the fact that. In previous tests. You know hackers were able to remotely control things like the steering wheel started the wind screen wipers. On an even remotely take control of breaks. So so I do think that you know the security systems Stiller very very vulnerable. And you know I I have to wonder I mean I'm sure it's a combination of the car's technology but also just the connections to it rate. You know which can be you know equally vulnerable so yet going to be interesting to see whether or not able to overcome messed. It it would seem to mean to be not only a Tesla issue. I'm not a technologist but also just a basic kind of savers security infrastructure issues while we're facing. It is it is and then of course that brings you back to the 737 Mac's story to this. The CC you think about the more they learn about that more this year maker recognizing that they didn't train pilots. The enemies in because the two crashes happened in emerging markets and that's wrote it just cells are going to be that's a story for later in the show we'll get to it. Was the last time period of whole foods store Christine. I have to say I don't shop there very often in its price for the very reason that this story is winning how much is it you know I I'd like that. That nickname that I guess who runs around a whole paycheck instead of this whole foods and you know I have found it quite overpriced now a lot of items. And was fascinated to hear this is the third time Amazon's going to be going in their cut prices to try to be competitive and I guess. By an average of 20% of a number of items throughout the store. BR end you know the I think he would Amazon is recognizing. If you go into a whole foods coax in and I know a lot of dual shock theory. I tend to just because it's convenient package shop there on the way home from work her way home from my granddaughter home. And what it is that's who went I'll do is by a couple of items some sort of they're prepared foods are very good. But if your goal by either fish market war to buy a piece of beef. You're you'll pay like 24 dollars per pound state. You pay the twenty dollars were pounding. Sort it sure salmon. And when you compare that to market basket or Shaw's or Stop & Shop. In some cases it's two or three times we're going to be paying it these other curve restores for the the pro team. The currently I have noticed that they've been bringing down the prices the produce but it's still excessively priced when compared to other room for stores. I think they're doing hearsay throw down the gauntlet saying hey we're gonna compete for the agreement chopper we we want. We to a middle America to shop here as opposed to just the top 5% I think that's all they get out the top 5% waiters. Brit which you know is a stark departure and it imagine from whole foods original model Don T think I mean that's got that's got impact the operating. Cost structure up and down me. The food chain of Amazon's gonna go in there and try to make it another market basket. I I was all sick curious about on the report where it said you know Amazon intends to open a new line of her she stories independent from whole foods as. Lou early as later this year. So that's you know to cannibalize your own. Your own chain that way and I was kind of wondering it kind of reminds me of being a gap when it opened up old navy. Now Syria to wonder whether thinking about there there must be really really stiff competition coming up in the food market. There is an eight there in a business with very thin margins and they're used to compete in the they've competed in in many businesses with within margins that. If this is one of the court free business supply chains are confusing. You know their ability to compete in cork trees lose it'll be tested but they're they're clear throwing money at a now with Pete do. Is to make it more competitive. Is if you are whole food if you're an Amazon prime every discounts when you're in the store. And then if you use their Amazon prime credit card 5%. Credit. On and on your on your purchases so. Dave Dave started doing things to make it a little more appealing it that the thing that makes it from a consumer perspective. If you're. Two income family. Or you eat just don't have time to cook the great bay jury bakery. They've got a really good prepared foods and they brought down the price of the protein it can't be just beef and chicken if they bring down. Their price of fish chicken pork and beef. To a point where it's. I was I competitive equality is better than shops and the prices a little bit higher than trust. I think people shop buying I think making get back consumer because it isn't like shopping experience of that. Problem is that parents store social crowd. You know yes they definitely are. We will see blues it be adjusting to to watch. On most Americans declined any kind of financial help or advice. The CNBC invest in you and acorn saving surgery found this. As a surprise but this both those people don't take financial advice does. Pretty average age of the person that they interviewed. Because I was curious you know I was curious of mom particularly since you know they saw the impact of the Great Recession and on so I was curious whether or not each played a factor in this but I can sit I'm entirely surprised I think that you know. The current. Population out there are still population and transition. From you know kind of these defined benefit pension programs to. You know the 401 k.s and we haven't really grappled as a society. How to plan for all this ourselves in and how to get help. Now I'd be curious to suit her audience has to say do you have a financial advisors our poll question you can Texas with your spots on the subject or text number 63566. I I'm surprised. That 75%. Don't have now maybe. We're you know eat the ice is so much of the population has negligible savings that nobody would give them place it. I think if you are of any money. He locked into a financial planner and you say well liked. You know it's three financial place that I can help and he I think that's part of the issue maybe there's a large portion of the population I'd be curious what our audience. Unaffiliated I folks this is Mike Armstrong from the financial exchange I'm joined now by. Yeah I I go back to the first apartment that I ever rented us there were five of us in this. Frankly it's terrible Somerville apartment but we're all trying to coordinate our Renton it was a bit of NASA and kind of heinous. How does this all work on on the platform are you able to split out the rants of how does that really make the landlords like. A little easier. Shore Michael thanks so we created zero rents really ought to meaning simplifying the whole rain collection process for landlords and property managers. And what we do is we we basically if there's individual tenants will debit and individually and patched their payments together and sentenced to its. So landlords love it whether it's you know a single unit landlord or more of a professional landlord hundreds of units. They use this product. For the reporting from the automated rent collection for the tenant. Rent splitting so it's it's been great. That's pretty nice you mentioned and most importantly it's completely freaked Terry guys able to offer for free yes so our strategy has been a little bit different we don't charge tenants and we don't charge the way we do is we actually licenses through banks. Who then offer it to their landmark it's. And for being a client of that being too becomes a free serviceable the way in the hours in the tent that's actually had a number of different New England local bank set up more we do we have quite a few institutions are all available on the rent dot net seeking going sea world we adding new institutions. Folks again the name of the service is he renting you can get a lot more information by going to see rents dot net it is a completely free tool for both landlords and tenants. By texting us at 63566. Starter tell extra keyword Barry and become a member of our brand new textbooks tell us what you think 24 sevenths right here on the financial exchange radio network. Her seat couple text messages on the topic of whole foods six point seven writes very whole foods has dropped prices on salmon. To ten dollars per pound in their beef out couple dollars as well. Ninth symphony rates whole foods fish and butcher shop qualities a million times better than the other chains. Buy when stocks on sale lately produces did poorly stocked. Now I I don't agree about here butcher and fish being better and in the stores and frankly I find. Maybe. Big seafood it's a little bit better then what I get a shot but I can't really test of that. Their beef I've fine beef and chicken metal find to be any better that whole foods it is show cause you mean quality or price. A quality and under audit it's way better yeah them. Dakota I met him it's totally it could be a mind thing you know your whole foods him. He has an organic everything's sorry could be a mind thing both from my experience and irony complaints by just I just don't go there are now because the prices are too high. But the sales job you don't get a good sailor. Yeah I I get tea shop there are fairly often not it's not worry too might bake shop every shop not like that midweek shop at. You're home you're arguing homes say honey to riveting the end if she is article. News accounts stop by whole foods little and pick something up. And I kept I did it this is just opinion expert. Right I don't notice any difference in the call me produce or in the quality that be for the seafood and it looks nicer. I think it also depends on the community you live in not very. Because I do notice a difference in the quality of the produce and and the means such on store to store with market baskets and shots. Dia great debate if they Shaw's in a market basket is near whole foods equality is generally better so I degree view Varity don't really see much difference. But if you go into some size and on market baskets or other stores did don't have as much competition from a story like fat Coca you'll see you'll see a difference in the quality critiquing me in the fruit and vegetables and stuff like that they tend to wilt. Daddy hey you know the key to produces how quick he's turning it over and you know how busy users store if you if you if you have a busy store that's where mark. Our market basket so wealthy. They do double the volume of any other grocery store you know when you look at our square foot basis. You know into one of the complaint chip up market access parking lots it was two poles lines are too long in the aisles are crowded. Well it yet that's a problem but it's also means you're getting fresher stuff because they're turning it over so rapidly. Then I shot that on the circled Russa knows you know lose those in no Watertown so it's almost like game it's it's I think that they on the provide. Fruits and vegetables in such a local restaurants. So at times like a Wilson's arm kind of thing they have like their own fresh produce everything in my F farms store. And I've always struck by the fact that the quality of what you get there is equivalent if not better than on a whole foods and yet the prices are half. So I got sick and she. Yeah it witch's night that some part 603 writes I listened to you to get your newsletter what more do we need that's on the topic of do you have a financial advisor guest. A little bit of controversy there. One thing that's happened very recently. Is mortgage rates have dropped quite dramatically we talked about this last week with the ten year treasury went under 249 notes in about 247 now. But still. Big opportunity for homeowners to refinance or mortgages Christine. That's rate. One reports said that there's nearly 50% increase in the size of the population a single week who could potentially. On benefit from the fact plants at that mortgage rates are solo unavailable for. On refinancing. On what's going to be interesting to see though various this whole issue of tapping the equity if home prices in some markets come down. In some people of course refinance not just to lower their payment that they refinance and or to access the equity in their home. And you know be interesting to see how many of those homeowners are really able to get the benefit of the equity in their house. Well you may see some of that people may say well gee you know Carrillo. That you know I can't deduct in a 20000 dollars left on take out an extra twenty. From my refinance 'cause. The rates have gone crazy yeah I'm thirty year mortgage you can go from both for 81 down for six and that's pretty attractive in terms of savings depending on the size here mortgage. And I think you'll see people use it to pay off consumer debt I hope they don't use it to do dumb things like. Take vacations. And things like that but if they see it is an effort to consolidate debt pay down credit cards are paid out student loans. It could be a good opportunity five million Americans take a look at your mortgage books if you mortgages. You know fourth recorders 55 and a quarter percent might be time to call your mortgage banker. And say hey. Is there an opportunity for me to refinance when we come back or take a look at Wall Street and see how the numbers are moving busy day. Life goes on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter. I don't know if you guys cut the story about Paul spring that's kind of a local company I think right now open. Yeah I mean they have always promoted their water is coming from these natural springs in mean. It's it's it's funny to me you know very I never thought about the fact that the term spring water would be regulated by the FDA in you know reading this article makes complete sense. Let me just the skeptic in me I never really expected it to be anything that over marketed ground water. So is Rita has eight oh how this is really big deal out of pack that now. This group is is claiming that. In the basically were fraudulently marketing. Themselves as his hitting counts. 100 meant to 100% natural spring water has been a colossal fraud perpetrated. These circuit consumers. A pit. That's the the contention by the class action lawsuit that has been filed. Is it nicely that. Olds that adds nationally gas and you know that's the Monday you know they deliver a EC at Oliver and companies everywhere they had the but they have that water coolers you know a vast majority of them believe proponents. I will tell you that they're used to be a real cold spring but it ran dry fifty years ago. Right right and they were saying that I guess they built and maintained six phony man made springs in each comply. With the law as so I mean the extent to which they went through this. It was interesting because you know there's also Belmont springs and online and I am now in years ago that that was because they're originally was like at Belmont springs at that since ran dry as well. I think that's Belmont New Hampshire. New Hampshire I don't know I I I I thought it was going to be. Yeah and it's yeah it's a phenomenal in mean that I just eye to some leases in that it wasn't real. So if it. That they are making this claim this false claim is shocking. If you ever drank well water RTs in well water. Because it does it doesn't taste particularly in taste very very different Emily does and yeah I I joke all kinds of water and I'm going to travel a lot to use I actually lived in a village in Nepal for a couple weeks in and we had to collect her water often leaves coming down a mountain so I've tried all kinds of water that he hears. And it is very very different. And yes it does is it does. I'm dying to tries Burger King. Is introducing it whopper that's me with the weight vegetarian paddy. And it's big guys company called impossible foods. And people can't tell the difference Kristi. I'm fascinated by this you know I've always one in to try. On to eat and regular basis. New veggie patties and they never been able to you I have may. I have I had a problem digesting protein and actually I'm not an efficient per team to register basically instantly and two. Tend to eat a lot of meat as a result. To you how a possible option like this where their click me you can be really good amount and Tina and it sounds tree. What does it in and here's a couple things that some of you me suffer from high cholesterol or maybe you're right you're overweight. This whopper rates it's called the impossible border. Has 15%. Less fat okay so that's that's good but 90%. Less cholesterol now I can tell you. Which are yet to be my age everybody knows on classroom education. Every the end in that white castle has been selling them since September. And their consumers can't sell tell the difference. And now burger kings and could borrow to pay more port to ironically it's gonna be more expensive. Then it would be to get a regular beef hamper. You have to wonder as you know as if if it can eat assuming that the spreads you know maybe the cost cutting down overtime I mean it's really concentrated out of one plant in northern California is an at that their producing all of this. So you know if if this takes off we'll see maybe the costs come down but what I liked about it. Is the fact that. Big greenhouse gases and therefore there can contribution to climate change and could significantly improve if we start using more of these plant these products instead of relying so much and meet so. This is definitely worth it for everyone all around individual health and community as well. I AP. We'll try a gate and them out the pictures to see if they tell the difference. When you take the company public on Friday the last thing you want to see doings trading. Below initial public offering price by the following Tuesday and that is exactly what we're seeing which shares a lift. Lift shares are down 2.4 percent per dollar 666735. Hi everybody it's very Christine with you here on Tuesday morning and you know Christine it occurs to me some investors paid as much as ED dollars a share for list and it's now trading at 67. While they are definitely coming in it's interesting how you know I mean they launched this with the premium to what they originally thought in the market is tying them there originally at the their original thought was correct rate. I mean originally their prescient 62 to 68 dollars a share and that's river rat. And they may have been better off with that you know engages would be if they priced at its let's say the lower 62. Then the appetite it would have been fears that you would have had longer term investors piling into the stock. Now we're having is an absence of confidence in the companies at all. And they're still a lot of things being done to try to protect the company in protect that race. Really what you wanna look at shares of lift will no it's it's April now let's take a look at the shares in October November. This year that's when the you really find out what kind of company yeah. You're dealing with here. Markets are open their down the Dow's down 97 points you soupy down five in the NASDAQ is to happen when we have a whole question today. Which is 75% of Americans do not have a financial advisor we wanted to know if you. Have a financial advisor we posted this question in the first hour per show. Had a number of respondents. Say you know I wanted to hire a financial advisor Bedell had a 150000. Dollars nobody would hire meaning it. And this is a problem Christina and a few here with your peer group you know Parker talks about it periodically. It if you don't have a half a million bucks. You know there's not many financial advisors that really wanna do business with the beard they're not willing to take you won his client and that's a function of licensing requirements regulatory environment. And margins. But that I wonder if isn't that yeah I wonder if that's not a big part of the reason people don't have financial advisors. It would seem to make sense I was thinking about it during the break Barry and you know in the same way that you know when you join an employer. You're automatically enrolled in some kind of health insurance benefit in the liking her retirement benefits often are still optional aren't that you can choose whether or not you wanna put away part of your paycheck I'm wondering if we need to start making it. Compulsory to stand help the situation and get people moving along so I'm not in the situation. It really compulsory saving we have really is Social Security right right that's right and so just thinking about it and saying you know what maybe we should. Be thinking about how to start recurrence is people just aren't thinking about the future there are only thinking about the hearing now on trying to maximize the pay check fees now. It's true. The standard 6040 portfolio of stocks and bonds just had its best quarter in a decade this is how a lot of people invest. A standard 6040 portfolio would be 60% stocks. 40% fixed income which would include cash CDs bonds. Municipal bonds anything that's. A relatively safe debt type instrument had a pretty good court. Well and it looks like they're benefiting from the fact that the Fed has put it stop on and you raising some more interest rates which as we talked about earlier has also create an opportunity for homeowners to potentially refinance their mortgages. Now you know it's. In the AD the mortgage refinancing opportunity. I don't know if it'll be fleeting and boys sure sub me wanna think about taking advantage of it's it seems to me if you mortgaged its got a five in front of it should definitely be calling your broker but even if given mortgages. I don't know four and a half for three quarters it's worth making. By colleagues and ten year treasuries to 48 we think rates are gonna come down further there could be some real opportunities to refinance that would you say year earlier five million people can refinance. Something like that yeah that's what the studies are taking a look at and they are saying take it vanished while we still can't you know because we seem to have that dip. That gives you that window of opportunity. There's a retirement crisis in America and let it just share statistic at you from being incurred. At the end guard the median of 41 K account. Ernest investor who 65 and older. Is only 50035. Dollars and is a lot of people are gonna happen impoverished retirement Christine. Or they're just expansion to continue to work. And you know the age of retirement people seem to be pushing it off and often not come on the expectation that they'll just be able to continue to work. When I look at this you know I think about people who have that expectation that they can keep working in some capacity. But then I think well if they get sick and then just decimated with the way health insurance and everything in health costs work. It's it's a scary prospect you know. And it's you may think about what's the next generation and how if you have children or something it's really pushing those costs on to that next generation. So you know again thinking about how can we is society start to. Creative forcing factory in order to get people to saves that they have a little bit more and that's I think it's view that we need to think about. I think. What's gonna happen is I think your generation and even talkers generation are gonna witnessed their parents released struggle in retirement. And the reason boomers are struggling in retirement is defined benefit pension plans went away. And they started disappearing in the years. In the early nineties. You know the basically. If you work for big corporation. You don't get a pension plans 41 K plan at the match. You don't get the pension plan which was kind of forced savings mechanism yer dad had in mind that Kristi. They're similar age and I don't know if your dad has a penchant but it you know my dad has you know. Social Security check for himself he's gonna Social Security check from mom and Andy but nice pension from the company's work for. Your generation my generation. The pay people. And those pension checks or getting Social Security. And a lot of us spent our pensions meaning we got a lump sum and then the spent as we've got broke in the in the crisis of 2000 actor made to us or shirt to the crisis you know nine elevenths. Region we just don't have any money state ice I hope that your generation and talkers gibberish and be little more prepared. I think we need to start educating about it more because I still think that where community in into me and using this in the very broadest sense the community in transition. I think that a lot of people still don't understand. Just how much it's on them to do best. And I think we need to start figuring out how we get the word out and educates MRI and was pleased to see that CNBC in the prior. Our we are talking a little bit about this area they're gonna start doing some education I think there's an effort out there to try to reach out but. They're definitely needs to be some kind of effort by financial institutions by schools by the government to to. Encourage people to rethink. How they're structuring merit their investments and how to structure their savings and info. And I don't. I don't see much changing it's not part of the high school curriculum as a now he and I. It's not and this is this is why I'm wondering if we need some kind of it it be interesting to see if any legislators out there be willing to take this on and say OK in the same way when you join a company. You get these benefits you're going to be force in the same way your force you so security. T to participate in the Farley caper in now make it compulsory in some way otherwise I don't see people changing their behavior. You know and yet their problem they have is it's so easy to access your four point you can take a loan against it. You can take money out of your Roth firing a human beat did a good thing about the old defined benefit plans that are parents had cristina's. They would get a statement on them once a year but they couldn't take money out of my dad never had the opportunity ticket nickel out of his pension. Just what didn't exist it was something you received when you retired period options for rank. Now if you if you fall on hard times you can access your four point eight your kid wants to go to better call it's and you can afford. You can take money out of your diary even though it's a foolhardy thing to do. We see people doing it repeatedly. And I think that's part of what's gotten us into this position people living beyond their means how they doing it their dating your retirement savings in support themselves and present day. I. Maintain their lifestyle keep up with the Jones's race. Coming up we're going to be joined by Noam Shriver from the New York Times. Christine is going to be talking to him about the gig economy mover and others are maneuvering to shape the answer. I tell you from an employer perspective. You're a lot better off without having independent contractors doing a lot of your functions as opposed to police. Christine and Olmert talked about that very topic when we return to the financial exchange. Shirts. Little tore everything business and finance it's the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong chunks on the financial exchange radio network. The financial exchange. His role murdering and and also now in West Palm Beach, Florida. Check out our website at financial exchange showed Doug come and find the station closest to you. This is the financial exchange radio network. It's here right now is known cyber from the New York Times and it pretty interesting article today about whether or not gig work is a job. He's taking a look at some lobbying that's going on by Hoover and others who are maneuvering to sheep the answer about this known thanks so much for joining us today. Yeah. Sin not a little bit about the story that you wrote as I understand it here are taking a look at some a sweeping proposal as he putted from taxes regulator about. Whether or not companies to use a digital network to dispatched workers like Rupert as can label them as contractors. Rather than employees to keep us a little bit about how you came across the story in and what sparked your interest. Cherie yeah Lola. Two Lugar and I. And its rival lipped out probably the best known. Jake platforms you know you have an applicant Sony press about me get a car. It's pretty simple. But the key to making that labor or that business model work is that all the drivers in this case and more broadly obligate workers. Our contractors they're not employees that we use are a company. Tenure workers are contractors. It is a very very substantial savings generally. People on the street that added twenty and 30% and the reason for this savings it is. You I have a number of expenses that you just have to pay anyway in your work is done by contractors rather than employees have to pay into the unemployment insurance funds. Now to pay workers' compensation you know out and minimum wage amount paid time app overtime people work with important as the week. You have to pay the security and Medicare taxes none of that all that is you know the responsibility of the worker or. It's just not a at all. And so. No actually I'm pretty give companies like you are left are very keen. To keep there workers classified as contractors rather than pleased because there expenses would go up substantially. If they were classified as employees. Which is beholden to the business and you know we just saw last week. Lift when armed neighbors have a Republican a couple of months the next couple months and there's just no way to fake good it could return. The kind of money is that investors expect them to return if they had depend on these expenses so that's the kind of big picture. Over the last few years though it's been very controversial this classification questions and and a member states of the federal level. And as regulators and politicians in courts. Has raised this question what made these people actually should be classified as employees not contractors. List and who burn other gig companies have really swung into overdrive. Trying to lobby to prevent that from happening in Maine. You know that the term delighted that carve out a carve out from employment law that would keep these workers but as contractors to. Like they're predicting they're trying to have their cake eating too little bit as well right because if I was reading your story correctly. On some levels they were. Also trying to figure out a way to offer certain benefits and assuming because he won it to attract workers like health care benefits in the lake and so it's almost like they're picking and choosing a kind of constant line of panic. Yes I think because that's one example of having your cake eating its I think the biggest example is the thing that most. You know stabilize and federal. That the criteria that determines whether you are a contractor or an employee is control. He is that the company controlled the worker exerts but still a large amount of control over the worker we tend to classify them as employees. And do better and live do you exert a lot of control over these workers there have ratings. And you have to keep your rating above a certain level or you risk being deactivated and the Rangers basically that you do your job the way they wanted to do that they are very courteous together it vehicle they you have water in the back. That you follow the right route. That you keep your vehicle could win all these things. For this branded experience that we know as you grow or that we know is lift and if you control worker in this way traditionally kicks you are deemed to be an employer that person many have to pay out these expenses so. The biggest element of this cake and eating its dynamic is the fact that they get to exert a fair amount of control over how the workers do their jobs. But there are other responsibilities that typically comes with a clear to Mexico to pick up it's expensive. But is it also it that is it is an honor excuse me is an element of that control also the fact that. We weren't originally lifting your retires doing missing kind of a per times supplements away and now we're seeing more more people start to do it full time is that starting to tip the balance a little bit. Yeah actually that's. Did they establish some I mean originally it was actually very very good. Early on in the game Kruger he was actually professional drivers but then as they introduce people act which is the kind of most widely used portion of their service. They Wear a little you know it's kind of people. Finding you know a few hours Sunday may be resting at home mom and in between drop off and pick up as kids. He might do that assert your retiree and an economical and more money so there's definitely. A large part time contended but they're also very much just a professional classes at Gutenberg drivers can days. Resemble employs a lot of way. A lot of ways other than the fact that and the underclass let its contractors and have to. Can draw these expenses on the and I should add one other key feature at that determines whether your employer contract are typically. Here's what he's set the price that you can charge the customer or whether the company does and in the case of Bieber and lists. Based at the rate that the drivers aren't which is a very very strong indicator of an employment relationship not a contractor questions. Just a little bit about tusk venture is who I guess has been leading the charge in some of these markets and trying to figure out a strategy to. Push that agenda for a name mentioned in your description of them that they are both in venture capital and political strategy firm. Can you talk a little bit about their history and and and how they how they exude on both of those fronts. Shares of Bradley has close a long time political consultant and strategist he was the topic aid campaign need to Michael Bloomberg when he was running for mayor your city. And after his political career he opened up this shot this kind of strategy venture capital shops. What they would do is essentially. Operate as a political consultant slash a lobbyist to start ups. But instead of getting paid on them sort of monthly retainer daily just ask for equity in the firms and so that's the kind of venture venture capital peace. You know they take these equity stakes in startups. And does so they had a portfolio of equity stakes and blood and number of companies and neighbors probably the most well down on the most successful. And didn't you know feel and what his firm would do in different ways to try to solve these problems and one of the biggest problems. That a firm like paper as is this question of whether. The authorities have they given stayed orient in the country in congress and the Labor Department are going to classify workers as employees and so they set out. To solve its problems it and number of different states and we're very successful so over the years you know bomb roughly half the states have carved out. Do very and lists specifically these these transportation network companies that are officially called have carpet out from employment law. So that the air workers are contractors. But in the last two years this is this going to be a little bit of a tougher. Tougher climb for them and they run into different. I kind of backlash in the states. And so they had to resort to steadily more creative and resourceful ways to get this done and that brings us to Texas at the beginning of my story. One thing they discovered is that if you have this plays out in the open and the state legislature can be very controversial yeah. Unions to mobilize against you worker groups to mobilize against you but a lot of things can happen that are unpredictable and they can really undermine what you're trying to do but. If you take your case to a regulator. State bureaucracy the State Department of Labor. State labor commission. And the dad meg you're able to kind of make your case spared and that happens. Much more behind the scenes it. It's not been on the front pages of the newspaper it's not you know televised hearings. It just happens between you know most of the businesses transaction between your lobbyists. And a lot of bureaucrats to know what notes and so that was what was essentially happening in tax system. And and it signaled this kind of escalation very increased sophistication in the strategy of these firms as they try to. Carve out these loopholes that allow them. By the workers whose contract. Well known thanks so much for sharing your story with us today it's definitely something that we're gonna be keeping an eye on here at the financial exchange we appreciate your time today. It. And worked talking about the guide to different types of real state ownership many view all home team I don't. Home here in new England and he might have police in Florida. Taught wouldn't question that comes up quite often news. What are the implications. Of transferring your home to your kids in order to protect it from the nursing home yet that's one of the worst things you can do makes my teeth which line really bad because. One you've given up control over your home two doors anymore it and that's not a comfortable feeling if my client I heard a live there. Two if you wanna sell it you can't it's not yours if you do seller where's the money go to the kids. Never mind all that there's a huge tax implication that comes from this even if your kids are great kids right. If you bought your house don't usually go thirty years ago you probably paid a little for now it's worth a lot. Right and you give it to my touchpad sale was tax free when soma house's tax free except it's not your she gave it your children this example and that's the problem. And then you give them your basis. And if you give them your cost basis all that built in gain. Is gonna be taxed to the children so that's the tax prop you don't get that tax free sale when you immediately to your kids you don't that's a big bite. So I mean right there if you have given it to them now and now even if they agreed to sell they got to pay the acts that you don't have the money you hope they give it back Q and then there's just tax. It is time to play some trivia at this week in the year 1841. William Henry Harrison. Became the first US president to die in office we will be asking questions trivia question about president Harrison. How many disease in two of his term did president Harrison passed away. You know the answer that question umi Texan to us at 63566. In fifth listener with a cracked answered that question will winning fifty dollar. Car for gasoline news. And with C if you haven't played before we need to put my first named Sperry. Before you type in 63566. How many days into his term. Did president hearse passed away it 63566. He is the text. So Christine after your interview with no home as a athletes to the drivers. Do you think they should be classified as important. Think you're working full time for one of them it makes sense right you're controlling all aspects of how the working. You know the costs and not incense aren't just about the unemployment insurance and everything that the maintenance of the car and you know the quality of in all of that that would all I would imagine come underneath the company conceive be controlling all of that as well. So Aminu you know if if I take a look at. Safer is in how Massachusetts govern things right now for employees who are dedicated. To you and a single employer. Yeah to me they would be classified that way interpret maritime human after it's about you know how. Yes some some of these people are part time in a supplementing their and come or some of them are working for and I think one of your listeners Texan about it both Cooper and lift depending on the zones. Since he's it just get kind of Fuzzy because there and getting income from two different companies. But it fury dedicated you know single. Employer kind of person and I would imagine. I was I'm curious to see a Massachusetts handles it when it comes around here. You know the thing that strikes me is the I talk to a list driver. And choose a single mom. And she would work she's working sixty hours a week for between lifted Hooper because she was you know working on both maps. But what she told me was she was working you know I guess on averaged 1012 hours a day 56 days a week. That she was interspersed sing it with child care meaning they shoot dropper kid off at school work for hours. That you bring your kid home V payers get a kit at this school driver homer mom would take care of the kitchen work for another six hours. You can't do that an employer relationship. Brady it that's. You see him to UPS wouldn't say idea well sure you can work sixty hours a week he could work any sixty or one that's the part that. Makes me feel like the the Cooper live drivers the independent contractor the fact that they get to dictate what their hours. Yeah but even then I mean if if they're only receive if she's only that she's receiving it from two different sources say Timmy should be an independent contractor but it's you're only working for one of them to me you know play. Luka. A week we continue to learn more and more about the 737. Max crashes. And more and more it looks to me as if Boeing it did not institute enough training on these foreign pilots. The especially the ones that are coming out of work emerging markets. Yeah it would seem in it seemed that. They were really on preparing it in one story that we're reading it it was almost like they're really dismissive. Of the fact that the overseas pilot turned clinic at the same kind of training so that was kind of disturbing to read about as well listen. It was the Judy you know the it's. At a picked the I don't think they ever thought that any of these planes would come down I think they they kind of figured OK these pilots whether they're in Indonesia her. We're at where the our argun every domain you'll be in in the properly trained before they would deer caught in these planes in the fact the matter is. I think even after the institute these changes in the software. They're gonna have to go and make sure that every pilot is being trained in simulator. Before they put these things back in the hair he's just too much risk people are too nervous and I think right now the Boeing boring in in my opinion. Has been greatly damaged as a result of this whole thing. Really can impact their bottom line I would imagine as well because they're increasingly depending on business from these emerging markets. Those emerging markets have been growing markets for for air travel and now him. If they have to really think about how other NN treaty safeguards so that says they can engineer these planes with. The safety measures in mind for all the pilots can be training. And ironically got a lot of Americans are cinema going up at 737 Max either their Zain hate. On a minute go on a fly an airlines it's not flying the 737 Max I don't care if it's. And Airbus but not getting back in another polling jet they've got a lot of damage probably more. Damage to their upper hand. That they need to be aware and I don't think it's reflected in the stock Berkshire. I think it still has a ways to go in terms of influencing its stock price. This interesting you say you know after the last crash area I haven't of her friends who travel quite a bit for their jobs. And I was watching my face the feeding was really interesting to me how many of them. Commenting on the fact that in one of these planes are runs the sickle lays claim to think focus switch. So I think your confidence vote taken that people are definitely. Nervous. They're nervous but outside investors are looking at the stock right now it's trading at 392 Christine. And it's treated as close to 92 in the last year and so. You know unite Khazei. Who we may be looking at distance it would geo and yet these planes. I think Wednesday with the stock prices to use you know because this the 52 week high on the stocks were 46. So it's often it's 52 time fifty bucks a suck that much. Yeah. Wind the first bricks it referendum occurred I say first because I think it's conceivable that there will be another exit referendum. But now we're start he even though bricks it hasn't happened. And it may not ever happen. You're seeing a fairly substantial. Hit to the British economy because of that exit poll Christine. Yes I mean you've seen a number of companies who are closing down shop moving jobs and renegotiating. Even with the EU on how they're accessing the European market so even though. The UK seems to be influx sun on how to exit everybody else around them Cianci figuring out ways to get out of there. We you know it it's like Honda was gonna have a factory in. In Great Britain. And those 3500 manufacturing jobs in the just pulled out they said literal it's gonna happen so we're gonna move the job somewhere else. Then you had Bank of America. Who said well we're gonna move our headquarters to Dublin regardless of what happens just because we don't like the hope for exit process of me if you read this story. It's it's been devastating for the UK the automobile. Sector. It ended just story after story where. Banks with its JPMorgan Goldman Sachs Bank of America they're just saying well you know what we we don't really know what's gonna go on in London. So relief and you know 'cause we we we at least know that Dublin. Will remain in the European Union. Act like I don't think people really took that into consideration when they're voting on bricks and I say most people didn't really understand what they're going to vote for. Raid in an in addition to that just the impact on their directly on their months as well because. Given that bring imports more than it exports it singing its currency start to fall and that's pushing up prices on a variety of things. Including fruits and vegetables. So in the inflation and people are experiencing from not to is is going to be hurting the population as much as some of the CNN. Jonathan and trade stuff that plan. Well more than 50% of their exports are going to hear. Which makes sense logically right you just think about it if you're making a British good. Who's your closest customer wants a guy in France or Germany and the unity the bricks it. Issue is is causing that to you'd be less attractive in terms of trading partner I have no idea where were going. So I mean I I think there's a deadline next week. April 12 yes that's right. Kurt default rate that you didn't leave the European Union that deal is April 12 I think we should expect that that continued the you know postponed. But eight at at this point what I'm looking at the different polling. It it looks to me is if they're moving towards the second exit poll which would really be. Unfathomable. And I yankees you vote for you gotta do it even though it's easy act I think their their recognizing that may have been mistake. Right. But set but I do think a lot of people think really carefully about when and how they do them because you know it does at a. Question why would somebody get married in Alaska. There. This is my brother in law is originally from there so. That that makes sense that you can sometimes you'll see. Multi cultural weddings rate again American will marry somebody from India and they'll have to ceremonies one in the United States and India. But he if he gets. Like he gets prohibitively expensive. But what he'd do with it easy get invited to. A member by Sunday I think this year actually I think he's going to go like two or three weddings in fairly record time. So if you got a family. Personally have to travel to the wedding you're expected to provide a precedent but you also to arrange for daycare for your kids. Now down. Yeah and and that definitely all adds up I know I know we got married on we're living in Philadelphia at the time and you know a lot of my husband's family lived in Boston's they had traveled down that was quite an expense and I had to I had a number of relatives in the Philippines and half Filipino who could not make it. No he ended up we ended up going out there actually. In just had a small dinner four for sent him out there who can make it out that it was it was definitely a lot to consider only her and we are trying to figure out. Logistics and everything you know and make it easier for people. It's hardly any a lot of young people struggle with it. Where the agency you know I can't afford to go to that way which is tough message to it can. Oil prices. We are looking at according to banks anyway. Banks in the Wall Street Journal reporting that banks raised their forecast for the price of Brent crude the global oil benchmark. When he nineteen as the market continues to be supported production cuts led by OPEC primarily Saudi Arabia's cutting production. That's great in so Brent crude is now expected to average just over 68 dollars a barrel this year. That's according to a poll of twelve investment banks conducted by the Wall Street Journal last month. And that's just slightly higher than their forecast of 67 dollars a pair of. So we need to get ready and prepared for three dollar gasoline brilliance that that's going to be something. It is at least for the rest of this year it could become the norm. A three dollar gas it's going to be interesting to see how that impacts like Memorial Day travel in fourth of July travel you know you always hear about those being in the car travel days of the year going to be testing to see how. It impacts how people are thinking about their summer plans. You know the economy strong. Writes he might be paying a little bit more for gasoline but chances are you week's gone up or theory here. Self employed you've been able to raise your ease your hear your charges to customers. I don't know at I don't think it's high enough to where it's going to be a real shock. You know who really uses the boating industry did you pay about more freer gasoline at a marine anyway right so. If all of a sudden you go to filter boat and it used to be three bucks a gallon now it's four bucks now that he could see it decrease in boating. But again the the economy's so it's hard to match that's going to be too devastating. Right now when we look at markets across the board. The S&P is down just a fraction appointed 2066. The Dow is down 77 points. At 26181. The NASDAQ however is up it's up eight points at 7837. Matching Kreutz trading. At 6236. The euro's at a dollar eleven that ten year treasury note is currently trading at 2.4 7%. And then shares of stock in companies that we've been talking about today lift shares are now down more than 3% to two dollars and twelve cents. At 6689. And I would remind you that lift shares are still being supported by the underwriter. So. You know let's see where this thing's going. And you know certainly six months from now the interest but where's it going even later next week. Disney shares her trading the dollar 12112. Dollars. And Chipotle Mexican Grill trading at 699. Dollars shares lose Lemmon won 61. Thanks for tuning in to the financial exchange today we will be back with another edition tomorrow morning. Have a great day.
