I need. This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Investors are confused why this confusion things look great. Unemployment is low inflation is low. I'll tell you what here's why investors are confused the bond market is screaming. Absolutely screaming. That we are about to enter into a recession. And yet stocks continue to rallies a matter of fact that Dallas up fifty points today the NASDAQ up 43 points. It looks like the goldilocks economy. But the bond market is communicating with investors and telling us there's a problem hi everybody it's buried truck with you here on Thursday morning and you know people get all excited about the stock market chuck. But the fact of the matter news that bond market is what two or three times the size of the stock market. Yeah I mean the bond market is it's obviously a lot bigger and I think it tends to move first is well that's that's what you tend to see in a lot of cases is that. You know the the bond market can often give disclosed why we looked at things like the yield curve in terms of pay what might be happening. And again not not to say that were in the same situation is that I don't see you this as in 08 situation the world is ending type of Great Recession thing that's coming. I see this you know you can have a garden variety recession but the fact is if you take a look at 2006. Okay. Markets made a boatload of money in 20062007. Markets were largely flat in the it was awake when things fell apart well the Fed. Really pivot and on policy. Starting in late 06 early 07 the markets didn't fall apart for about twelve to eighteen months so. You know you could have an equity market but even has some games that mean we had cases. In the middle of 2007. The S&P went from around thirteen fifty up to fifty at 1550 had an 18% rally. And then you know dipped in and had another 10% rally and then dipped and then another fifty you know so. I remember it well yeah I remember it well I bury me in 2007. I I've warned our clients exit you know this this is can be some tough road ahead and we reduced our equity exposure in the spring of 2007. All deny ever catch a lot of heat because the market continued to rally in August of 2007. After August of 2007 chock things got pretty ugly. Yep and so it it it's a case where I think you you do have this global economy that showing significant weakness significant slowing. We get some data out this morning domestically. That you can just confirm the hate the US economy slowing not nearly as much as the world economy is but no we're not necessarily seeing. The other three plus percent growth that we were hoping for. And so I think that when you when you put the picture together it's. There's some real questions as to what the heck things are gonna look like twelve months from now. In its largely dependent I think on some big binary decisions that need to be made on you know what Britain does with Briggs it what the US does with China. And those are decisions that are really difficult to figure out what's gonna happen specialist. I love the stuff and we're gonna talk Briggs is a little bit but. The breaks it votes that you had yesterday these non binding votes in parliament where they put eight options on the table in like any good two year old said we don't want any of them. Right right we 19 definitely nine which we don't want any of these were not eating anything. Oh okay you're going to bed with no dinner then you know that's what it's going to be. In I think a lot of people trucker asking I am getting these questions getting emails text messages were getting text messages on our lines 6356 sixes are Texans riposte. The you know what he'd do what what is that what does that retired investor do what does that guy do who's sixty years old they retired. Three years ago they're living on Social Security they're taken two or 3000 dollars a month out of their portfolio and how to make ends meet. We do with your powerfully deep goal stock eco wall bond he has. Media by bitcoin I mean what does an investor do in this type of climate. I think the big thing that I always come back to is this the most important thing in my opinion for any type of portfolio construction. Is matching of the risk that you're taking to the time when you need the money in what I mean by that if you're retired you're 62. And you have money that you know let's say your polling 101000 dollars a year off your portfolio. And you say OK I need 101000 dollars a year. If you think we're heading towards the potential you know downturn. I'd say hey get yourself five to seven years of safe money put aside so. If you need 101000 a year you probably need fifty to 70000. In in bonds cash and other safe assets if you say. Pay the rest of the money I don't need for B no longer period of time. You can keep that in stocks and kind of ride out the volatility ethnic you don't want to over think this because. You know I've been in this position before where what there's been times where I've thought that the recession might becoming her and had I moved all my money to bonds. I would have missed out on a whole bunch of games because recession never actually came. And so you know it's the classic thing that you're here with economists as you know they've correctly predicted ten out of the last one recessions yeah that's it's that group economists are always looking for recession to a certain extent. And so you do have to caution yourself when you look and it's CNBC and Bloomberg and so forth you'll see the people who know that they're scream and yell bloody murder that there's going to be you know and or recession right around the corner. They're usually scream and into the abyss like nothing ends up happening most times but sometimes it does and that's why you need to be you know prepared. But not kind of overly moving you know too much your money Iraq. Well on the reality it is half of Americans don't have a nickel saved for retirement anyway no bad news this is according to Government Accountability Office the bad news is that almost half of Americans approaching retirement. Have nothing. Saved in a 401K or other individual count the good news is. That the new estimate from the GAO. Is slightly better than it was a few years ago of those people. 55. And older that's my peer group. 48% of us have nothing put away in forward Kate defined contribution or individual retirement account. It was 52%. Back in 2013 so Americans are woefully. I'm prepared and frankly there's probably a lot of people saying I don't care happens the stock market is that are happening money anyway. Yeah and I mean if you go back the the last four years that we have data on his 27 team. And the median wage for workers in the US at that point. Worked out to about 44000 dollars years that tells you that half of the workers in the United States. Were earning less than 44000 dollars a year. When they were when they were working and so. You know it if especially if you're in a high cost of living area like the northeast. If you're making 3035000. It's tough to build up meaningful retirement savings in a lot of cases and so. You know I I think that for a lot of folks people you know who are at the bottom end of the wage spectrum and in these are a lot of people that feel like they've been left behind by globalization. I think it it makes sense that big simply might not have money in some cases to contribute to retirement and I know we always say hey pay yourself first. But if you gotta pay your electric bill your car in order to get to work you gotta buy food sometimes you're not making much money there's not much left over. Social Security provides most of the income for about one half of households eat 65 and older. And a lot of people continue to work after age 65 and some doing because they want to some just say. Hey I love my job. I need a lot of doctors who just like working is doctors have yet orders that you know there's 75 years old and they're still they've loved litigating in the Libyan in the court of the fight. Well but on the whole. Six is half of people overeat 65 are. Living on their Social Security. Another report found that the median household savings for people 65 to 74 years old was a 148000. Dollars and that's immediate. Yeah and it in the way that I look at let's say that your that average person making 44000. Dollars a year. OK so let's let's say that you've been making the median earnings in the United States over the last. Three decades you'd you've been an average Americans. Not great not bad just break down the middle in terms of what you've been earning. Your Social Security in that case. Is probably gonna provide you somewhere in the ballpark of around 20000 dollars a year that's it's gonna be raid in that range maybe a little more maybe a little less. But around. So if you are living off 44000 a year. That means that you need additional 24000 the rest come from a pension or from you know retirement savings right now most people don't have pensions. You know so that's off the table for a lot of folks. And if you need 24000 dollars a year in order to be able to withdraw that safely you probably between five and 700000 dollars depending on how old you wanna retire. So you know the average savings is a 148000. For people in that age range. I think it's safe to say it's probably a third to a quarter of what it should be. That's our poll question today. Do you have more than 140000. Dollars saved in retirement accounts you can participate in the poll by visiting our website. Financial exchange showed dot com meet in Texas with your thoughts on that topic. Our text number is 63566. I did come across another story that's disconcerting. To income couples are surprisingly I'm prepared for. Retirement militiamen now from Boston College wrote this. You know you'd generally think of okay if two working people they must be safe and a ton of money for retirement just the opposite. Yeah and part of me wonders if this is because. Of families that have to spouses working are more likely have kids that eat up all the money. Yet daycare there could be a lot of daycare to college you know things that I've nearly there's a lot of expenses associated with raising kids now. There is I I think that may be contributing factor I think part of it though at least according to the study used that. You know knee a lot of times half of Americans don't have access to retirement. So in might have once thousand to evolve at this rate once spouses work and as NRA and in the other spouses work in his into over driver yet right. Once spouses work in his office manager in in an office. And the other one views. Working in the big economy and some yet fashion. And to your point just by yeah did teach your point cute children. Are right extremely expensive. Coming up were we talking about Massachusetts marijuana our regulators investigating. Whether companies violated license limits. This story is one of extreme. Arrogance and we're gonna share with you next on the financial exchange. Mean this there's the charts graphs and numbers all day and just listen to us it's the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck sun up on the financial exchange radio network. Before we jump in short story book and at this hour just reflect on the whole. 87 point 5% of our audience has more than a 140000. Dollars saved for retirement. And chuck if you take a look at the text messages that were receiving. It's really quite remarkable. A momentum I'm 65 years old still working and have 500000 dollars in my diary. Five await rates bury my wife and I Peter cells first never stole. From it and paid for college out of pocket we have a retirement account one point two million dollars this is the one I'd like that coming from three threes here yet this is a good one. I'm 33 years old I already have a hundred over a 150000 dollars saved for retirement. And my top income earning year was 70000 dollars. And I think what this person is acknowledging I'm willing to wager that it's a woman by the way. He sheet she's expecting that Social Security will be there. And she's just say hey you know on a sock money away and take care myself. That everybody texting in is is is saying hey I've I've managed to sock away a lot of money for retirement. Yeah I mean we even get one person you're 978 saying I'm 28 now have a pension which by the way not many 28 year old pensions of good for you. But also putting away 8% of savings to 41 K as well so it's kind of pay even if the if something happens in the pensioner something unexpected happens or if I wanna move away and you know my pension doesn't vest I still have money that's put away so. You know there's the things that you like to see there. What a great position to be in great years you're 28 music and so okay have had to have Social Security you will have Social Security you'll get some kind of Social Security. Chuck I know you guys worry about it we spent at all it. You may not get very much but you'll get something. If they're getting they're in they're gonna get a pension and then they're gonna get whatever that saved their for a case of they're gonna have three sources of income in retirement. Enviable position to place to be good place to be. All right I saw the story in the globe and it just. The eat when I've concluded reading it I said what a bunch of arrogant. Eackles. In and a talking about the investment company here the one that was open trying to use the shell companies effectively. Ali pretty CFC is not only me here that with what's being done here let's first explain what's being done and then explain how they busted. With this these companies are doing a lot of Murphy and we controlled. Is the not the license holder for a mirror on a company. The game I don't three of their own but then they provide the financing in the management team to run another one. Company that is located in Massachusetts. And what they do is in the brag about this in their investor presentation they say what we do as we installed. Our management team and we turn to management fees it's onerous and we loan them the money users in church so. Yet they may not control the the licensed person. Let's out of a gun picture control entity don't. It it it sure looks like it and you know pretty much it's you know you you dig deeply into this and it pretty much looks like. You know you've got this company that B a despite not being able. To own more than three licenses. It really has its fingers in a whole bunch of different places in the marijuana industry in Massachusetts. Ball it's not outright ownership it pretty much is and everything but name. You know. And and they Dem who wished. He you know there's so they're going around trying to raise capital and they're saying in the there explaining this to people that there that want to invest. What they don't understand is that there's a Boston Globe reporter in the room. Taking notes berg. Judiciously and what bothered me but it is why if the commission set up the the program work on this basis rate where you can only control three licenses. How from the commission did know this really how on the commission asked where the funding is coming from don't you ask who's managing this yet don't you ask it exactly. You know these are basic questions. Now. Day I hit it reeks it if it reeks of corruption. You wonder if somebody on the campus commission was kickback rate when you read a story like this you say well. You know if bearing chuck can figure this out in the top Balkan Dan Adams from Boston Globe continues out. How come the salaried employees of the state tour. Really they're job is to manage the campus business in Massachusetts. And they completely overlooked us. Yet it I mean look it it's pretty clear they dropped the ball pretty significantly on this I think the biggest question is just paid what the heck of ago eight. What are they gonna do about the fact that this exists now in beat how'd they make sure it doesn't happen again in the future. Champ. By the way we got a text from 330. Quo is not a woman very much a guy. Now I don't know I thought that the because women are not tea just tell you something is matter of fact you guys can look it up. Women are much better savers and investors that man. Period. Where to look that up. Look at a anywhere you want on the old Leonard analyst Google it the the it's on you that's actually a good question I am gonna Google that you continue on and I'll be too. He loves to Google Tucker the Korea very aware. It can't Tucker when he CP and it talker fodder to come on the show and talk about the speakers. I think Ayers unity they didn't say anything in the Ayers story good. I think there's something scandals going on it I I know that might shake your faith and government. But. You know how does how does one company control all of these licenses. And it's Boston Wilbur worker who figures it out with a mission a nets. That's a little bit upset. Markets around nice rally the nasdaq's up 34 points. The Dow's up 76 points in the SP usable lemon he confirmed that women are better investors savers shipped. Down on the ultimately. And one through an interesting study actually that was done. Back in 2007. By the association for financial counseling and planning education. And it uses a lot of big words so I haven't been able to quite figure out what it's saying yet. It's a bet that could be a problem. All the sudden a number of fed officials including recap what are saying you know I'm not sure that the next rate move is going to be down. A news is that direct quote from Rick Kaplan before considering whether to lower rates I need to see an inversion of some magnitude and some duration re know now we don't have either. That's alluding to the conversation we opened up the show with Clinton lot of investors are concerned about in version and the long term rates being lower than short term rates. Right now the ten year treasury noticed 2.3 8%. Talk about that some more up next we'll have Wall Street watch. And then. The segment of the show that chuck has been waiting for we yes we are going to talk about bricks and you wanna hear about it that's coming up very soon. Making a little bit of a move into positive territory we've got the Dow up 94 the S&P up thirteen the NASDAQ up 42 so little bit of a rally happening here. I'm a sector by sector basis biggest winners today anything consumer facing. Consumer discretionary a point 82% consumer staples up point seven as you've got a couple big winners there on the consumer side industrials picking up some gains to. The laggards today. Utilities telecoms those the only two sectors in negative territory suit is firmly in a risk on move today. And that is Wall Street watch presented by liter bag. Both consumer strokes there stocks are strong that tells me wages are growing at the low end of the scale. Is that that's that's a reasonable interpretation got used to make ten bucks an hour now make it twenty. And when you go from tend to money you don't save you spend like consumers are what like consumer Stoxx Europe today though is that there there's no news today them. I think people are finally recognizing. That there's wage growth though they end could be it doesn't it doesn't you know here's the problem. The wage growth. The way it's traditionally measured rate and an additional reason to change that with the dues me. Count everybody's weak the American million dollars a year room where the you're making 20000 dollars year. And while pummel together and they say wage growth is 3% after which lets it run street to a half 3% but 331234. Depending on what metric you're looking out. But which you will find is the is not a lot of wage growth for the guys speak to a thousand bucks a year back I still make it 2000 year. With the wage growth is occurring is on Baghdad and mentioned making 20000. Year economic and what does your name can forty yet that's. That's why when people figure that out well duke entities that studies at the Fed has written a paper on it. And Goldman Sachs were in the paper and it and the problems. The papers they wrote RT KP they don't even include what's been going on over the last twelve months. When you wit when historians look at what happened to wage growth. In late 2018. And what's going on right now talk to any of your clients that run businesses books. Tightly and I care whether restaurant a medical practice a wealth management firm radio station. Everybody is having to pay more money to track workers there for. Look at the health care of business tucked it runs a nursing home hospital error medical practice. The year having to pay you want higher nurse practitioner you're gonna pay more money than you did a year. But higher. Wages are rising rapidly in the bulk of the wage growth is at the lower end of the week scale and that is really good news for domestic economy. I got an email and can the story Ph.D. is talkers OK if I read this email alert when it troubled him. I mean it's not your words. Right. Truck I'm per accusing myself. And I just don't present our. Chuck recuse themselves. If it Damascus say who sent it to but I an email says. The Boston Globe to look into it the corrosion on the commission if he isn't asking about behind the scenes financing. He is not only a lawyer but his father was the CEO and investment management firm and he certainly would know what questions to ask if not asking any relevant questions. He should certainly he could certainly beginning to act I think echoes the maybe it'll be on. This school but the fact of the matter is. You know somebody. Needs to be asking questions right it int and whether it's Ed or somebody else on that commission. I mean if chuck and I can figure out which questions to ask I would think somebody who's getting. G money should be at the via the Boston Globe reporters on this were getting paid money to ask these questions right they dispute out that. Hate these guys your ranking. About how they're corrupting the system in in in public and to gain investment accounts. I I smell a rat and I will leave it at that. I just also wanna brag a little bit and getting a ticket victory appear. I at last count chuck. In our poll question. ED eight point 8% of our listeners had more than a 140000. Dollars saved in retirement we have a lot of guys listening that are in their twenties. Pretty impressive. It's the habit that's pretty impressive I'll tell you that much who's not impressive. It is Teresa may and British lawmakers. I mean if they're not embarrassed. A hundred bare sport. Meaning get at it was two weeks ago that. And it was one of the members of parliament came out and said that this was the worst display of leadership in British politics since the American revolution. So you know like that's what were that that's what people in Britain who are in parliament are saying. But I'm not sure you can put the solid threesome ironic. What would she what else could she possibly duke she's saying hey I will step down if you eat just follow the will of the people. But I negotiated backwards to begin with that like that's why we're here so what Teresa made this she said OK I'm gonna go to the EU. I'm gonna get the best deal I can't from them and then we have to accept. Well that's really how negotiation typically works you've got to go to your own people and say look what can we pass in start America's otherwise this why you have this embarrassment where they can't pass anything. It's has made didn't consult her own coalition. And as a result she's got to deal that they don't wanna pass like that's just world leadership that is awful. Damn. So so what happens at like at the I've I'm still trying to figure out. What has it changes almost every day yesterday had some in the office right me afloat charge Kazaa it back. I need to see it in paper so so here's what they voted on yesterday they had eight different votes on what they wanted to do. None of them past 11 of them was lost by seven votes eight votes he'd vote so pretty close. So the one that lost by eight votes by the way. Was to stay in the European Union customs union OK so pretty much it's telling you look. Largely that the people who were in parliament don't want to leave the customs union because they know it's gonna be a huge pain in order to do so so they that's what that tells you more than anything else. But everything else they they pretty much voted like. Do we wanna leave with no deal do we wanna leave with the may deal that we like they voted on all these different options to go on leave with an amendment that labor proposed we wanna leave. You know with you know they they would do all this different stuff. They decided to do absolutely nothing there's really two options on the table right now because. The the speaker of house for parliament. Is refusing to bring Mays deal to the to the floor for a third time because you can't bring the same deal to the floor for a third time it's it's a rule built in the parliament. So that deal is pretty much dead unless he decides hey wanna do something different so you two options on the table really. Get a longer extension and have a second Brett wrote referendum on Bre exit or option one no deal breaks it you even you have no deal with the U with the EU. How do you get food and medicine stuff like that very very. Challenging and so don't you either be it so what they're doing it to the British people is they're saying you guys voted to leave. And if we leave we're gonna value you would not gonna give you medicine for rural people not gonna have anything to eat or you can do another vote. Your choice. That's pretty much what's being said except they've also voted not to do what nobody babies how many babies and elderly are they willing to killed do we know that like it. It's not really the British I don't really blame every I blame Teresa may for the snow like the British politician to be giving a deal that they don't like they didn't negotiate this deal. Now granted they put Teresa may in this position of leadership and she has failed repeatedly and they did vote to keep her in so I guess I do blame them for that. But they. They've they've pretty much said look this this deal is garbage has to to be fair to this deal it's not really breaks it. Like it's it's pretty much do you want. No breaks it by name or you know like it that they haven't really given. It and they're not going to get a better offer from the EU that's the thing I felt a. And why would they let why would you give maybe you hit it in France and Germany. Hate scraper it's it's like. The Yankees and the Red Sox they hate to right. What is it. And beyond that it's it's just look if if you let Britain even set the terms of its leaving. What's to stop Italy Spain or Portugal or Greece from leaving you know that they'd say hey look we won out too and we want all the benefits so. I do I get what the EU is doing but Teresa may has been about as impressively unimpressive as I've ever seen a leader being. Hints at the drawbacks. Of negative interest rates well they have negative interest rates in Germany would wheat down like if the EUU Larkin to. It and wanna buy a ten year treasury in Germany and you have to pay them. Right you have less money tenure from now would have now. You do the German ten year bond also known as the ten year bull and in Germany. The Borland is currently at negative point 06%. Which effectively means exactly what he said where. Hey if you want so if you want to lend money to the German government. You're gonna pay for the privilege of doing so you're gonna get less back it and then you put in. You better hope the currency goes up in value by 5% a year just to breakeven. Well unless unless you're in if you're in the EU all you're hoping is that the currency stays kind of where it is. You feel like if I just don't go anywhere like or what I don't know that clog ago when day the Euro was at a dollar 68 with that that now dollar twelve. When we see I don't know off hand actually appoint clicked on the wrong but now it's taken me some more I don't want to go. Yes of the Euro right now is yet dollar twelve pretty much right on the money. It's in their funny. It's come down in a hurry has now. Yeah. It's eight in. And the people get hurt by that are that the citizens of Europe would it matter with you live in France or Germany. Their standard of living is deteriorating. Rapidly as we have the yellow jackets and they and the protests going on. If people people are saying hey. At our life sucks. You know I if I can't make any money in one of money and do make the government takes in the form of taxation its the eighty major policy change in your updated the entity ECB. I eat it isn't an IPO there's no magic bowl there. It. And I think the real problem is that it's the ECB is pushing the wrong levers so if you if you're going to negative rates that means that you're effectively taking money out of the economy. If people have money deposited banks. Demonstrate how backwards is that when you're trying to grow the economy that you're saying I want to take money out in give it to governments because that will help it grow. Might cause a little bit realistic though altered. Potentially yet to a certain extent yeah. You know really real estate all all all assets that mean you you talk about real estate stocks anything that uses a discount rate did me a figure of its value. It's our daily poll question had financial exchange showed Doug John. Vote your conscience there hard just vote go to financial exchange oh god come and test away. Shareholders of Johnson & Johnson will be glad to hear this news and New Jersey jury. Ruled unanimously. For Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday. In the latest lawsuit to reach a verdict over accusations. That the companies to help. Based powder products contained asbestos and caused a consumers cancer but a while since they won one track. Yes of this was a case as you mentioned in New Jersey. Debt found. That a person by the name of her card over Monday had not proven that he was exposed to this is asbestos asbestos. Via the baby powder this is different. From the finding of a California jury earlier this month which ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay more than 29 million dollars. To a woman who claimed that asbestos in the company's top products had caused. Her mesothelioma said the same type the cancer. In in two different cases with two dramatically different findings from these juries and so. I think you if you're obviously look at your Johnston Johnson you're you're happy you years here thrilled about this. I wondered just where this goes as far as. Both Johnson and Johnson and all of these men and women who are involved in these lawsuits now. They're potentially just running up huge massive legal fees for all of these cases that are out there are thirteen thousand plaintiffs out there so. I wonder now that you have juries awarding kind of bailed wins on both sides. I wonder if you get some kind of settlement that ends of getting done here. OK so I got that story on Johnson and Johnson and the jury is out so to speak stocks trading at a 138 dollars a share. Buyer though they lost another one in jury on Wednesday. Awarded each be million dollars in damages to California resident that the jurors found. Contracted cancer from XP to exposure to round. It it sure feels like there is a groundswell that is building against buyer here in this case. You know it's witnesses I think the third one of these that we've seen in the last six months now that has gone against. By iron in but against Monsanto and and by against buyer by default. And so you know you you have a case here where. It's sure seems like there's a strong narrative that's building and I think the question then becomes what of the so much precedent that is being set here. Again you know juries don't typically decide purely based on Preston put it's just hard to ignore. The the narrative that's coming out of this that this. And I think we should point out truck that just because the jury awarded eighty million dollars doesn't mean higher rates check eighteen dollars yet the U you'll likely see a judge reduced this significantly most likely that line and a BP. Field as well. It'll be appealed that a judge will likely reduce this someone I would imagine but. You know it's just it continues to be a problem for buyer now. And I wonder why they're not more urgently looking at a settlement to be honest. They may be I mean they're facing Johnson Johnson you said is facing thirteen thousand lawsuits and buyer at last count was facing 111200. Lawsuits as relates to round. And and you have to believe that there's more coming right if if you look if you watch television you're seeing ads by via ambulance chasing attorneys. Look yeah for you to take to contact them hey if you drive up video cancer gimmick called target to eighty million. I noted that they're popping up now more than more than you've seen in the past and so it sure seems like the number of potential cases out there. Is set to grow pretty significantly as well just because. When when you get it out in front of people that often the you get people coming out who previously might not have thought about it or might not have considered it. Well sure yeah communities if suits human nature and the year your father died from cancer. And you remember that he used a lot around to give us call him it's. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange we're talking today about planning for retirement it's a big thing that you need to plan for. And really it's the kind of thing that you only want to do once you don't want to have to under retire. Mike one of the things that people have to sort through is what to us saying hey you know what's the aged. France between myself and my spouse. Our am I retiring her we both retiring are already retired. If your spouse is pulling in a whole bunch of income while you're retired it might not make sense to pull your Social Security right away so consider a bunch of factors that a big one is also life expectancy and that. Definitely comes into play with sort of security. In addition to Social Security another item that people have when it comes to retirement pensions. Is that the same type of conversation and same type the calculus the people need to go through certainly there's a lot of calculus there but there's oftentimes even beer one with pensions and narrow bit more rare today which is. What sort of survivor benefit to a and the option to take a my pension. It's not always clear cuts and I would caution here really think about it especially if you have a younger spouse that might be survivor here. And I look at the bond market the bond market is telling me bury you need to be nervous about the economy what I mean bad will. Some of the gun the yield on the ten year treasuries down about 2.3 percent. German bonds are trading in negative territory the bond market is screaming. Recession absolutely screaming if there's going to be recession. But then I look at the stock market and say well she was the Dow's up seventeen points unemployment slow inflation is moderate. You know if it's hard to know how to manage your money or to talk about it I everybody it's buried truck with you here on Thursday morning and she. You know he is just it's one of the story struck it won't go away you wanna be bullish about buying stocks recently by a 100000 dollar for the S&P 500. Menus your Alter ego says he but the bond market's telling the world about to come to an end. Of the bond market saying that necessarily because you know what you're seeing here is you do have a you know a significant amount of money that started to float towards the long end of the yield curve which is created this. This inversion scenario but you know the other things that typically happen during you know end of the world bonds bonds scenario. If you would have high yield selling off you'd have corporate spreads widening compared to treasuries. Of all kinds of stuff like that that's happening. And it's not going on right now. You know it's so you have a case where the bond market to me is signaling. Hey we've got slowing growth that were concerned about. But they're not yet concern to the point where they actually think the individual companies there you know adding additional risk because of that slowing economy. So I don't need to beat her. I think you should always be nervous. Help you're not helping. All I quit I believe a healthy level of nervousness is where you know you have to always have a little bit you know it you never want to be too you know content in too happy in life you know just it's always wanna have a little bit edged do you. I repeat my earlier statement you're not helping at all half of our half the population doesn't care what happens to the bond market the stock that. Because they have no money saved for retirement general accountability office. States that. People over the age of 55 that everybody. Over the age 5540%. Of us have nothing. Put away for in a forward case style defined contribution plan or an individual retirement account. And those that do have money saved for retirement the median amount is only a 148000. Dollars. How do you plan to Libby lets you do make it to 65. And didn't elect her career Social Security Medicare and you have a whopping 140000. Dollars year. It doesn't put you in it it doesn't make you feel very good doesn't. It's it's it's this report you gotta be living pretty tightly in that case you know let's keep working. I tell you what. It's somebody I mean to me and they said. It baron or retire next year going to be 65 innings yet on Medicare and I have a 140000. Dollars receiver army noted that. They'll retire next year to keep work and but he right that's my advice. Our poll question today is. Have more than 140000. Dollars saved in retirement it's. Street for question you can participate in the hole but visiting our website the website address this financial exchange dot com we got a lot of people that texted us. On this topic during the first hour of the show or text number is 63566. How much you have save for retirement. How old we a surprised. Our audience was all like people there that we play goal that's ultimately we wouldn't I I don't really packed room one bullet or something to show. You don't help home. I'd like them now you do I usually if you are what I enjoy them I think they're great in every once you get a trophy. Yeah. I'm just surprised that I I actually embrace all right Ali you're welcome to part this picture I just don't. I am surprised that bullet sales Morris Almond. Listening to or shall we we do have more than you would expect you know it's a lot more you have often everybody tech's invisible deal you have I've often felt that our audience did tilt towards kind of baby boomers and a lot of cases you may be limited gen X here and there but. We have more colonials that this and then then I realized in and out it's kinda cool personally see if you know why it is they tell. Easily the game like to hear thoughts a little. While they think they're very hip. I hit the name that I like the way I struck an electric car you're short fence. We're short pants. I I had a lot about campus. And yet we don't inhale but I know a lot about it it's it's everything that you want if you're millennial it's like a greatly go look at this I've got. I don't wanna use the word father figure because you that. That gets towards aids. It's like well you know he's really taught me a lot about life and that is kind of what it is I think. Well now we're up to 91% of our listeners having more than a 140000. Dollars saved for retirement participate in the ball really curious to see with the final numbers are financial exchange showed a cup. I remember. You and I talking about this next story Cherokee remember years ago we talked we've kind of surprised it. General Motors made the investment in lift your call. I do it was I believe they put 500 million dollars in. Back in January of two point sixteenths about three years ago. You know now because of how their shares because of how they invested they can't sell their shares right away they have a lot for a period of six months they can't sell them. Until really September. Almost almost October. But the value of their shares is likely Mary parish hit a home run this if he's gonna make about four times or money and that she she puts 500 million in. She's gonna make a profit. I would think at least a billion quite possibly could be a 1000000005 to boot. The question that I have is what they do with this in any in terms of do they keep this investment and say hey this is a place that we wanna continue to be we wanna have a relationship with lifting the ads try to grow with them. I that I would I think that's an I think they should do. Keep the investment and save a list it because they're gonna get seats on the board right now is acute fuel that much of the company coming sixty. I would imagine they're probably gonna control fifteen to 20% of the board. You know the problem is so great the beat the good news is you have a lot ownership in the company we have no control. But they could go to the owners and say hey what used GM cars for your in in what we used GM cars for all your lift drivers themselves but. What I'm curious about is GM does have some capital needs in the next couple years and my fear is that they look at this and say hey we've got this windfall we can use this for some short term capital needs even though might not be in the best long term interest of the company. But what about doing something with their crews automation as well what does lift needs it. You don't eat it looks to me and I know there's a lot of bad blood between neighboring Google and but you got the bad blood people vote in Daryn in there now so I think. Google and and Hooper could kiss and makeup and GM's guy. Arguably. It some people say that GM us cruise is better in terms of the software. Then the the cool stuff I'm not buying that but the there are people out there that says that GM is headed global. Yeah I mean I. I I don't know I know GM doesn't have nearly the mileage that Google does. I know the GM in terms of whenever we get you know California puts out those records of driver was vehicles and in which companies have errors and so forth. And I know that Google has the lowest error rate that they ran into. It has instilled idea. No they haven't. House. Giver has dipped but I think the give the big thing that I look for is that overall error rate because. First of all I think you can make a case that what Google's doing it recent terms their testing they're testing it they're testing their cars and more situations. Yeah you know GM does not pick that you can't get into a GM car right now in averages drive you around an ever wrote. Whereas in the Phoenix area in Southern California he Google's actually saying pay like word were doing this again we have safety drivers but. They're not touch in the car 99.9 percent of the time. So clear they're going public on Monday and yes I know tomorrow. With harassment tomorrow record to beat bad information where it says in west witness list going public tomorrow he told his Monday. Young you're so wrong. The chiefs. Just I millennial and let you know what is is there are back weighed by with shares by buying GM shares surged too late to do it it's probably a little late on that. New jobs. Registered nurses 438000. New jobs in home health aides 431. Thousands of three out of the top four occupations. Right there in that health care field. Where I do have questions. Two of those jobs personal care home health aides. There's a drastic difference in pay for those compared to registered nurses. Rate right the other thing that you might want to look at too is if you're going to be in our end. May be looking ahead to being nurse practitioner. And PA like it I think that's an extra year of college yet it is to become a nurse practitioner yeah. And if you talk and giving president nurse practitioners. Think I don't think so not off hand but it's. Now I tell you that it for some reason I have a handful of friends that are either PA's work nurse practitioners. And they are all making in excess of 2000 dollars a year. Really yes. And and our end if you're an. 11511. And then you can get overtime on top of that. Today were talking about the top state playing mistakes that you need to avoid you know Todd so many people create their state plan but they then failed to fund it. Explain why it is such a big mistake in what we mean by you know not quite funding your state yeah its it's really huge and you've got to look at it from two points of view one. You're spending money after spending money. To put together an estate plan to want to work your right and if you don't put assets in your trust that you create its not working. In two very important respects. One if you have a revoke Coble trust. And you don't fund it. Well that of course you're not avoiding probe because all the assets would be your name that's a big problem too. That language in that trust is what it's designed to help reduce estate taxes when one spouse dies. It shelters assets in and utilizes exemptions. There's nothing in there. It's not helping you do that nothing shelter so that that's not a good idea and from an irrevocable Medicaid point of view if you want it if you're in case you're concerned about doing that kind of planning can you imagine not funding those trusts. Not only do you have all the same problems that we just mentioned with a revoke able trust but one very important problem you never started your five year waiting period. And so if you create an irrevocable trust don't put assets in in five years goes by and you think your assets are protected from the nursing home. They're not. You better fund trusts you better and it's something that they you know. They see all the time folks starting these statements are not buying them up let's in the estate planning experts at Cushing and Dolan. Have written a brand new guide that details the top estate planning mistakes that you want to avoid you can request this brand new guy by calling 8668. Foray. 5699. That number again is 866848. 5699. A cool 89%. Of our listeners have more than a hundred. And 48000. Dollars seat in retirement funds. Further evidence truck that we have an affluent educated audience. Sir seems like it. Got one text that was little disturbing. Finally wrote in and said that he used to have a 1000005. In retirement accounts and and his brother. His brother stole it in a Ponzi scheme well imagine. Happy Thanksgiving. And you stole all my money that's that's like awful. News. And I decided shares via. He did we have a winner Berkshire given what we did so via the trivia question was which former pitcher started more games for the Red Sox than anyone else and answer was knuckleballer Tim Wakefield who started 430. Games. Across seventeen different seasons so a played seventeen different seasons. Beat never seem to get hurt because he was thrown 68 miles an hour. And see any time you need someone to start a game and pinch Tim Wakefield operating in you know his arm was always ready to go so like most people thought him as a media. As reliever right but he was he he started did there used at all yeah he eat there was one year I think was even 992000 where they actually and closing games. You know either brilliantly career and a lot of not ninth inning you know throwing sixty mile an hour knuckle balls but. The winner on the question was Bryant from the army at port Brian takes only a fifty dollar gas card entry today was brought to you by Armstrong advisory group. So did the more we learn about this 737 man acts an end to it I'm just trying to envision the brochure when they're selling these planes. And how much is a 737 Max cost just ball. Probably am guessing list prices somewhere row means a hundred million dollars hundred million. But if you are the one that doesn't kill people if Steve is a 103. So to be fair it. It doesn't crash by itself it's not it's yeah it is an extra three million and haven't they picked the in the really would bode was doing and say well if you want the software that'll prevent the plane from actually crashing your pace an extra three night. We'll no doubt that was not the exact issue the issue as you surf the software was the same on all. A software was the same. What was different. Was there was a warning light package on these indicators. That was not available on the base went for reasons that I don't understood. Indicated a potato it just won't know it's if it it's not like the planes were built any differently it's just one of them had a warning light in one did know why you wouldn't put the warning light on all of them. That I have I have no audio. Why they were charging an extra two million dollars that's why which makes absolutely no sense. Yeah I mean I like I'm trying to think about the litigation. Face. I would be first of all reporters I want you know those planes it's gonna sex it at all how many how many people that they killed 400. Somewhere near that maybe high threes. So we're in a wooded GM paid 200 people. I can't remember the exacts an up 500 million I don't know yet so okay. So that means I'm I'm saying and bones gonna pay two billion for the people they murdered I think it's more you do I think it's more. I wanna see the emails in the that it likely the the litigation in the fast. But why didn't you just put this is standard equipment and if on the lip plaintiffs' attorney. Why why in the hell would you put this in all the planes by my grandson died because you can put this in the place. In both the reason Nelson think it's gonna be Mort is that it's you know it was also a case where. You know you you had an opportunity unlike a car you know that the general framework when you sell a car you do not been trained the driver on how to use that call. You know they they've gone through drivers had their license and so forth when you sell a hundred million dollar plane that flies six miles up at 600 miles an hour. Yeah you generally trained pilots who said plane doesn't crash. And now they will they were commandos Seattle and we're gonna do when a teacher ratify this it to you don't kill 200 people. And that's where there were significant shortcuts that were taken as well and so I think the combination of those. He's going to make this more costly for both. China makes unprecedented. Proposal on technology transfer intrigue challenges this is big news this I should let this I apologize. Unity the you do and think that we were gonna make any progress on intellectual property with the Chinese. And the people that I know I won't mention their names. But the people that I know that are close to the negotiations. Say the reason they're dragging out. Is that president trump is relentless on the I. Least according to American officials. Are saying okay where you we understand you're not joking anymore will rule we're gonna give up on some of these issues. To which I to which says they'll believe it when I see it. But I had no I'm just too cynical I think. I'm just like I cynical for guys this event forty years old knowledge give me a yet cynical when you get screwed over tea company how many times you've been screwed over you you like the 25 years old. Not many but my Susan helps protect me from that. You know it's I just I have a healthy skepticism. When when Chinese negotiators say they're going to do one thing because I always say look. It's not in in anything whether it's business personal life negotiate whatever it is not about what you say about what you do and China's history and intellectual property rent anything big about go back to five years ago when China says no we're gonna start opening up our markets mourner gonna get away from government control. They they've got the exact opposite direction. It's been the exact opposite so. I look at this nice say hey it's all well and good that you're talking a big game and that hey you might even put pen to paper on something but show me concrete action so. They can even get this signs. And I still don't buy it until I see it. It. The trump administration sues FaceBook over discriminatory. Housing advertising practices what's assault. Yes this is. The stock for FaceBook is a really moving a whole lot on this it's opened up down about. Maybe 1% it's down about half a percent now. With most markets slightly in negative territory at the moment so this is not a big market mover to pretty much what the trump administration. Is saying here. Is that. FaceBook in some of their advertisements. That they hosted. They allowed advertisers for new and different banking products most notably mortgages and things like that to target specific zip codes. And specific. Effectively really micro target certain areas writ of of yeah exactly they were pretty much red line. And obviously that is a prohibited practice FaceBook has since changed this so that for certain types of ads related to banking. You can't do that type of targeting now. But the drug administration is going back and saying. They look that this is something that you shouldn't have been doing to begin west and so they're looking to you know just I think get the a probably some kind of fine. Against FaceBook is what their most likely looking for. Usually your secret. Yeah. I was talking to landlords that don't rental properties on the cape. And they use FaceBook to screen out. Undesirable. Tenants you know the weekly rental business the F yet nice house again nice house and Falmouth ignorant about six weeks a year. The a lot of landlords are now using FaceBook user get an inquiry earned a reservation and air B&B or BR PEO our whole way. You know see all this person wants to rent out the property for seven days. And then they find out that it's a 25 year old or that one year old wants to rent out their house and the trees and FaceBook to find that one year old say. No no no you can't have because they trashed house. Want to know why even after going to FaceBook is air B&B provides reviews from previous places that you've stated so if you've stayed in trashed the place before. New show up on air being be like it'll show your age it'll show all that stuff right there on air BMB. No we've that if you have maybe your new pressure maybe maybe year.
