This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and sharks done us. Investors are betting. And that the Fed is not going to be raising rates anymore as a matter of fact a lot of investors suggesting that the next move by the Federal Reserve. Will be a rate cut to talk about that. We also have. News as it relates to the Boeing 737. Max crashes. More and more indications that this is pilot error hi everybody it's very and chuck with you here. It's a Tuesday morning and you know chuck we go to a lot of these Federal Reserve meetings with a great anticipation. You know I think at a rate cut to that you know hike. What kind of language they get them to use in their announcement tomorrow. This wasn't kind of sleeper play if the if everybody seems to anticipate. That we're not gonna hear much of anything. Yea it sure feels like a little bit of a snooze or heading into. You know what what we're getting today. Effectively. You know you have a 98 point 3% in ninety point 7% chance. The Fed keeps rates exactly where they do that's based on the Fed Funds futures which allow investors to bet. On way air. That the Fed is going to be going with rates and in fact even the rest of this year. Looks relatively boring to be completely honest if we go out to end of the year the last meeting this year's December 11 that's the final one that we get. There is a 75 point 2% chance that rates are exactly where they are today. Wow there's a 1% chance of a hike. A 21 point 4% chance of one cut. A 2.3 percent chance of two cuts in a point 1% chance of three counts. Well with the Fed cut based on what they're seeing in terms of global trade and mean the date the trade wars that we've enacted have really. Had a dampening effect on global economy's not so much ours in art art looks like our GDP is going to be what. 2.3. 2.5 percent for the year if we had to guess and estimate. But globally you're seeing much bigger slowdowns that. Yet you you warrant and at this point. And I think you know in the the big question that I have is when you look at the Fed and in their ability to cut rates so let's say in the Fed starts moving rates downward camp. If you are moving rates downward that means that. Someone like mere Tucker any investor out there now let's say OK in order for me to buy those treasuries I am going to get less in return. So in theory it reduces demand for treasuries which is supposed to get money back out into the economy get money flowing ball ball ball. But here's the problem. There's a demand issue on treasuries no foreign buyers are buying on the net basis to begin with and individual households of kind of in picking up the slack. But if rates go down to they really want to keep buying treasuries. At lower and lower rates. And so I think that's kind of between a rock and a hard place to be completely honest on that front. But if I buy a ten year treasury today to get to 59. And that rate goes for 259. Down two to 29 in the over the next few years. Time would you are but you're looking at it from the perspective of someone who's already bought a bond. I'm looking at it from the perspective of the fact that the US has to issue a trillion dollars in new debt over the next twelve months. And someone's got to buy those new bonds and because of the slowdown in trade the Chinese don't need to arrive. But the Chinese don't want to they wanna get away from me dollar denominated. World as it is they if they want to move away from that as fast as possible. And so. I look at you know what's going on with these trade negotiations there's a reason why Steve minutia and involved in case you're treasuries not normally involved in trade negotiations it's not something that you typically see. And so for him to be involved there's a significant currency component that I think has to be in play here. And I I wonder if that's part of the these negotiations. It is you know looking at this from a currency perspective and saying hey do we Buchanan reach back to the 1980s again. And you know kind of do a second version of the plaza accord or something along those lines to try to square things away from a currency perspective is otherwise. I think and and look you've got Smart people that are starting to talk about this now. When when ray Dolly of starts talking about structural problems in the US economy in the US fiscal situation. You better listen to he's been the best hedge fund manager of the last thirty years just about it knows about. Just about anything there is to know about currencies foreign exchange when he starts to say their problems. I tend to listen. So we knew look at the Fed's actions yet the ten year to 59 that means mortgage rates have come down again assay. Half percent from their peak yeah. Visits. Are you anticipating and should investors should Tucker anticipate. That mortgage rates are gonna go down further from where they are today over the next year. Some mortgage originally based on the ten. Ten year ways that's its it is tough from that perspective. You know eight I don't really feel any strong direction personally when when I look at the ten year treasury to its top for me to say where that goes necessarily. Just because now here's the other thing if the Fed is cutting rates into an increasing deficit was no buyers. Big investor is not a situation we've had to deal with in the last forty years so to be honest. I'm still trying to trying to wrap my head around what that means for rates actually. Again I I I don't quite know is he will we've never that never we have not seen that problem since the 1970s. Well at any rate it's a fascinating time in the not just that domestic economy and global. Did to try to figure out how to play this should be buying. Bonds at all should you be buying global equities. Should you be buying domestic stocks and mean word to put your money and that's that and we'll try to answer that question in the next couple hours. Parker brought a story to my attention this morning news released by Bloomberg it's 6:42 AM. Pilot who hitched a ride sea lion air 737. The day before. The deadly crash. Chuck them more higher average through this story and the more ID learn about these two crashes and it's still very early acknowledged that. That doesn't seem and doesn't the evidence seemed to be pointing towards pilot error in both instances. Yes and no. Yes from the perspective of it seems like it and again it's early you talk to anyone in aviation they do not like to comment on these things until they have more information so. I I. I tried to generally follow that with things aviation related. Here's the deal so beat these Boeing planes were equipped with a system that because of the re designs on the 737 Max the nose has a tendency to pitch off. There are equipped with this system the NCA AS which helps to pitch the nose down if the sensor detects the noses pitching up the problem is that. They they think is happening here is that those sensors may have been faulty in these instances in might have been pitching the nose down when he did not need to go down. The problem is that with the recertification. Process for this new 737. What color is Boeing was able to work with the FAA. And say that you know they could minimize the amount of pilot training because they're gonna type raid at the same they're gonna say it's the same type of airplane as previous versions even though it's different. They were able to minimize the training required him companies did not need to train their pilots. As much as they would have had this been a completely new developed airplane and so. I think yes to a certain extent it is pilot error but I don't think it's caused by pilots. Simply be out doing the wrong thing I think it might be caused by pilots not having the proper training on the airplane to begin with. Well there that may be an I guess that's another question comes up. You know prior to these two accidents how much time to these pilots have in the Helm of the 737 asks you how many hours today cap. And had they been exe yen to they have enough experienced before in east thanks and it's that's that that's a bowling problem. It's never may also problem it's an FAA is probably at at some point the FAA has to say yea you might be our biggest contributor in terms of funding. But we we need to know Tex going on and we want you know we 100 hours in the simulator where it would whatever the the the amount of trainees is that some most of these pilots are giving their training area these these jets isn't simulator. It's it's a mix you know it's if it's a mix in terms of what they end up getting here. The big thing when when you look at kind of the that timeline on this and and the flight testing in when he gain certification. The 737 Max it was officially certified by the FAA on March 8 2017 to pretty much exactly two years ago at this point. The European version EA SA approved it three weeks later pretty much rubber stamped with the FAA did. And so you know this has gone through if you if you look at you know how did the amount of testing that you know that these planes go through. You're talking at thousands of hours even in the certification process. But the planes are being tested by people who. We don't know how to apply the know what systems are there told OK here's this system that's been installed. And it's just it's unclear if pilots got that same level of training and that's. That's just a huge oversight. Sure a lot of evidence that they didn't tree right. Yeah Emily you have you know anecdotally you're hearing from pilots is that look I didn't even know what the system was in they were flying the plane like that's that's not good. It's certainly isn't. Planet fitness taking over the gym membership the world now. The planet fitness revenue has increased more than 30%. Over the past year are really questioned this company would make. B when they went public it had to be within the last five years. I said boy here's another gym and they come and go right to how many times have you seen it gym open and then closes three years later five years later. Fitness seems to have found the secret sauce to success in the gym business. Yeah and an in look guide questions about them as well just because near that the discount model it's you know it's ripe for competition. But ultimately I've ever since I moved about two years ago have been a planet that dismembered just has its closest gym to me and to be on site at just. I hated paying like fifty or sixty dollars a month are sure to go work out where is this I pay ten bucks a month. And yet they they lack a couple things that maybe I want but I figured out how to work around that. And what they lack babies. That they. A big part of why I think they're cheaper is I think they have cheaper insurance so as an example any of the planet fitness is that I've been in. Do not have free weight bar bells they have dumb bells but not the bar bells that you can dentures squat west's. And I think about lowers their insurance cost dramatically to you can drop them on yourself. So I would imagine that's a big piece of it is. Hey they tailor their you know their offerings to what helps from an insurance perspective. And a block party. Talk time which interest in those of the planet fitness I go to. They have a million. Different. What a holistic goals and treadmills. They have six bikes in the entire place I'd never understood that and I and I I love the bike is I'd you know I'd like on the roads in the summer but I'm not go insane in the winter. And it's just you know view only got six bikes they get crowded in a hurry. See you guys are both members of Clinton's. Yes yes with in are you in the ten dollar because it to memberships in the ten dollar membership in the they have 22 dollar. Yeah I've I've got the ten dollar 'cause I don't really use it for travel or anything anywhere they generally travel to either I'm not working out of the hotel was Jim there on ten dollars and while idea admiral listen to. Irked him winning and what's the difference between the tendons torn. The twenty dollar twenty the twenty dollar one it allows you access to any planet fitness anywhere don't even while you're traveling so let's say that you are someone who traveled tonne for work anyone at the same gym no matter where you work you get that package. Oh they'll have like arms to its religious like a couch TV game that's pretty much and they have like those Hydro massage machine struck out analyst those kind of grossed me out is on who's on it does does your planet fitness do you today bringing pizza like once we yep so it's it's they try to keep you fact keep you coming back I think it's due to Tuesday's. And then it's bagels on the first Monday of the month. It will be up with scarves to keep becoming back and is always tootsie rolls up ready. It's true author. It's her against. A according to this article in the Wall Street Journal about 20%. Of Americans. Have a gym membership. 20% of the population I've got to get rid of mine but to be like. At ten bucks a month I think it doesn't you have an in your house and yet he can't build a nice one in your house. Yet to bring your own house. Building the tunnels they do will would mean tally. Her particular show our allies and our I don't I don't shower there Noah adamantly paper towels and I've done your equipment at all yet you to bring her elder. At any rate our poll question today is do you have eat gym membership I have one. But it's not ten bucks a month it's it's under. The a hundred bucks a month. What's comfortable W football as a poll you look good. Data now you're whatever these days you know. If I I see if planet fitness had a pool if they couldn't do that in talks. Yesterday that's definitely big piece of the Tuesday. And vehicles and if. So financial exchange showed dot com just curious as to what do you have a gym membership. 20% of the general population has that's one out of five. But what the other Ford you know. Yeah I. I have what I paid almost like to get rid of one it won't to a certain extent just because the one thing that is tough is like in the winter. If if I ever don't go in the morning and then I get home I never wanna go to the gym when I get home in the afternoon so it's like it's it's kind of drivers that were in my house. Can that be nice but I'm really of the space to get all that stuff. Oh I have know for the time on the go right have to work so I just pack about now because I can't go early in the morning obviously. It is I'm here same way Tucker I do that day ago right after work bags in my car bill. Go in and if you do it that week what I find is if I go home. I start to eat and then go to Egypt yeah I mean what some. Home home home in our I don't wanna go back out here coroner or I try to go in the morning I'll outs for that. But so marijuana in Canada this is not turning out to be the financial boon that Massachusetts. Thought it would be. Is it due to the fact that they were so leaked giving these stores open in the approval process worse it. It's a bigger issue. Yet that that seems to be the biggest piece at least of the state had projected that they would have 63 million dollars in tax revenue received. By June 30 of this year but they've only gotten about five point nine million so it's okay you've got a 90% shortfall was three months to go. But the projection had assumed that they would have had stores quote a reasonable number of stores open by last July when instead he didn't even have the first stores opening until November. And they still don't have many of them I think there are. There's 29 stores I think that have north of 45 million dollars in sales. And so. You know it's just a case where they they don't have enough stores at this point but the start to get more that are rolled out an opening up but that they're not going to hit projections. Based on you know what we're seeing right now. The that they're not in the big populated area straighten out in the city of Boston they're going to be a close with a new one though you know one in Brookline yeah. You know Burke finds an easy shot from weather here talking you know the 128 loop or in Boston pop and out. It's a pretty easy shop for most people I mean this is you know it's you've got close to you know mass transit and stuff like that this is gonna give people some options but surgery. It seems like they're lowering forecasts now because that'll abroad and only I say Bernard five point nine million between all the stores but. Precious because they've been so slow to open new stores. What that and a lot of people are saying they can get it cheaper from their local dealer. And then in stores. Yet and I went the other thing is the location of these stores. Yeah and then kind of wail away at some of them are close to metro area would right now what do they expect. The they just opened one in lol. And you know what's happening is you're getting a lot of New Hampshire people driving down to wal the other canvas yup and each year and then if you talk to people on North Hampton it is a lot Connecticut Vermont people going to North Hampton to buy it kept thirty to 40% total license plates are about state yeah. I would imagine as you gets more the store's opening up you'll see more people going towards them. Just as you know that the one issue that you continue to have your buying from you know your local weed dealer. Is hey you don't know what the heck you're getting in I think it was either last year or the year before when you add you know hundreds of cases of marijuana laced with fentanyl and stuff like that. And bigger issues than the fentanyl now is also the pesticides. Yeah. Whereas it would what are they using to you know keep the bugs off if you're growing it outside you almost have to ease of pesticide. You know that's pretty abysmal quarter but that access their announcing that they're going to be during certain. Headcount reduction they're going to be offered by catcher employee's account in new employer hires and it is they appointed to a few issues obviously trade tariffs are having an impact here but. It does seem like it's awesome war debate just global slowdown that's really impact their business page today you looked across Europe emerging markets across the board there are seeing. Religious slowdown and have the pretty heavy slowdown in. Bali in some really all of the plate so yeah you can point towards trade being part of the issue here in uncertain that. I am confident that senator trade get it done that actually stand to benefit. But there does seem to be import cyclical trend here going on expect this point to just gentle slowed down I'd have betrayed action. General Mills stock up about 3.3 percent people bind more cocoa puffs and kicks at this point. Slightly better than expected earnings became man and a profit 83 cents a share which beat estimates 69 cents revenue is about work at an eight. You know improved their full year outlook slightly says doctor has not been. During the performance at administer their competitors the sport. Very good thank you Mike. Mike Armstrong and that's Wall Street watch presented by leader bank. Somebody speculating this morning shocked us talking to Pitt. The Amazon. Amazon's doing a lot of the package delivery and taking away from FedEx and thoughts. It's it's probably playing into a certain extent but I don't know how big of an effect that's having in and I'm kind of a world wide scale. You know it Amazon for all bits you know growth in size and scale. And the bulk of its business is still in the United States. Right you know and so it is probably having an impact but. For FedEx to be talking about hey we've got global problems and referencing those that to me suggests that there's a different forces play. When we look at that sort of again is on is definitely contributing some weakness domestically for them but overseas I think it's different ball game. You know we're talking about candidates in the previous segment and we're gonna move on but. I did I. Wanna pose a question to you I've been looking at the neighboring states. To Massachusetts. And New York State looks like they're gonna pass legislation this year. Connecticut I haven't really heard much today I heard they were going to pass at that and haven't heard much since then. Vermont looks like they're gonna pass at Rhode Island me for a long time had been holed that now they're moving towards it. Seems like New Hampshire is the one state that has no plans to legalize recreational is that consistent with what your researchers showed. I mean CAA camera for a hurting thing my anything related to New Hampshire the hell was I think there was that if he if people keep driving down route three in 93 to Massachusetts and and is an. Take a lot of heat on wasn't there a couple weeks ago that there was a comedian New Hampshire house. Being that it's approved to legalization. In May in New Hampshire and so I don't know yet here it is. So this was wrong yet it was from the 21 to February. The New Hampshire. Criminal justice and public safety committee in the house. Passed with a ten to nine vote legislation that would allow adults 21 and older to possess purchasing gift of 21 ounce of Canada's. And let's see it would also governor appoint commission be responsible for issuing licenses. And the first retail licenses will be issued in November 20/20 no it hasn't gone out full house yet but if it did this to clear path for kind of an eighteen month. Runway to legalization Ian. New Hampshire. If it does give Massachusetts. An opportunity to make a lot of money. Over the next couple years it does it doesn't in and in what new New Hampshire you're surrounded by illegal marijuana. You have legal marijuana you're just not getting paid. That's New York just need to take it up when everyone around you hasn't it just means that your people are gonna have it but they're go somewhere else to buy. I'm curious as to whether this is a big issue in the 22 when he campaign it was you know people say it won't beat out here I talked to people fall politics down here in the non. But it wasn't standard. And that was part of the thing that. Really brought or just entered office he broke campus. I think the big thing is you know you have at this point. Was it ten states that it's legal and right now Alaska California Colorado Maine Massachusetts Michigan Nevada or again. Vermont and Washington. So you've got illegal in ten states right now. Thirteen additional states have a decriminalize so when half the states pretty much it's either legal or there's no criminal penalties for possession right now. Now I imagine you get to the point where it almost doesn't matter on a national level. It is any of the state want to kinda happened it's just from a business perspective it's the Al miserable to run a business when he can't get a bank account. That's that was my thinking it is is that I think it depending on who runs on the democratic ticket. BI I think he could become a pretty big issue next year you know it policy. Tax on high end real state sales could generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the city bosses the story in today's Boston cool bike Tim Logan. And we're seeing more and more this we saw outing Cooper do this. We see New York moving towards us. Others in major cities where there's just you know a lot of real high engrossed they were talking about. Properties you know that sell for 2000003000005000010. Million dollars. You know having a special tax assessed on the properties in the city of Boston. That it's it's one way to go about it. I would say if your problem is a lack of affordable housing you're not allowing enough housing to be constructed at affordable prices and to me. That suggests there's a problem kind of with the permanent process in that you're not able to you know get enough you know housing kind of just into the system to begin with. So I'd like to see more things to kind of sparse supply as opposed to. You know something like this I mean look broad scheme of things you know 6% sales tax on houses that are more than two million dollars. It's not affecting 99%. Of people. Did you see Whitney York city's doing now the aid there I did you know past that there at New York is gonna have an annual tax it's an increase property tax. For anybody who I think it's over five million dollars. It but he raises a ton of money he had a guy hedge fund guy just by property. There's a record setting price for a penthouse in New York is 253. Million dollars that he pay important. They use Ken Cooper maybe can Griffin. That we chunk of change it 253 million dollars and when they pass this legislation in your city. It's gonna add nine million dollars a year to his property tax bill. Because he's not a resident of near exit that he probably doesn't even care. But I you know it just it it just points out. Yeah that's it. There's a lot of money out there. In and Boston is just. One of the many cities and look at how Boston has changed the skyline of Boston has changed since 1990 he's just remarkable. What's interesting about how most preferred bats to discuss this and this is effectively this is a transfer tax when you make a sale its trainer. So wouldn't this just keep high Indian inventory kind of. Off the market. I think what it would do is eat eat there they're talking about commercial. Astute very low that it realize that yes so you sell an apartment building right well if you're the owner of the apartment you're just gonna pass on your tenants. Yeses. You know if you're the owner of the shopping mall in you sell the shopping mall for five million bucks he's gonna say well like I got this tax cigarettes and you know. Yet and I'd rather see I think what New York is doing it and this just is that this to me creates this whole problem of hey look if you don't wanna pay the taxes don't sell place. That's very you know it's it's like OK so now we're just gonna have less inventory coming out which means that we're gonna push prices up it's almost a former rent control in that fashion. To which typically does not know typically push prices higher. They coming up we're be talked about bitcoin we've talked about the Clinton long time what's the price of that anybody buying it I'm not. That's next on the financial exchange. From. The crap to be completely honest. Is it still the red flag for law enforcement. No I mean I've I've filed in my 2017 tax turner had sales of big coin on that return and no I didn't have any questions on and get auditor or anything like that nobody if. It's my understanding was that a lot of uses sport at least early on. Was to pay for let's say you want to have somebody bumped off for you want to pay for drug transaction there using bitcoin is that still the case Hillary is that. Is it now used for more legitimate purposes. It it's accidentally the state of Ohio lets you pay your state taxes in bitcoin now actually. Really why I have no idea but the state of Ohio will let you pay your state taxes in bitcoin. At that spills legitimacy to me you know so they they let you do that if you want to. And yes certainly you know you'll get a bit going it was used for a whole bunch of you know illegal things but. I make the point that cash is typically used for a lot of legal things as well because it's not traceable. And that cash used has really been on the decline every year when Utley things. You know and they you you wanna have someone whacked your pain in the cash you know they that you are I would imagine like how do you know that. I confess to not being much of a baseball fan I actually had asked talker so this morning who Mike Trout like the position he played. I thought maybe use a picture turns out like Trout disease center fielder. And he just signed a contract is isn't guaranteed contract for twelve years and. Portland or did you mean yup yup so he is going to get paid almost half a billion dollars over the next twelve years to hit a little round ball with a little. It's him cylindrical stick how whole city. I 727 yes this'll taken this is the last contract to a for sign most likely. And it's a case he simply to at least 39 not many athlete or Zdeno Chara spine and goes forties he's a creek. And trust it trust and the leaks series nineteen years old mind you. Tennessee yeah he's been just an impact players since he came up from the minors he's he's been the best player in baseball probably since he was twenty years old by far. Are so bad. So 432 million dollars a botched it John Henry pay for the Red Sox to by the whole team I believe 700 and change. A boy I just. I can't imagine. In it that much money did they need to because of free agency or something weird. Yes just I mean he's he's that good when it's all said and done and that's kind of the going rate for players that are that good these days CA his contract was up after the Tony Tony wants these services pretty much looped and with the contract extension. Yet it's it's really 810 year extension. When it's all said and done so the he's got two more years left. But it's gonna be 810 year extension effectively. Are they USO early. It's because he's the best players and people make sure doesn't have the market yeah. Yeah but what if he you know what if he gets injures them like that that a risk that any sport in our. That means a whole lot of money these. Premiere star and all of baseball. Yep but so is A-Rod in the Yankees eat that contract for what the last three years four years later he did steroids. Like you're gonna have injury problems that we do that but I mean this. This is kinda like if you went back and think when you look at this when it's all said and done if you actually look at the numbers. Mike Trout if he continues on this pat is going to be one of the best two or three baseball players of all time. They get real this is like signing Wayne Gretzky and his prime. I guess I better put in Canadian terms you know yet dates it to help Leo that yes the conversion you know. That they appreciate and battle this comes a merely weeks after Bryce Harper San with the Phillies for a noble as it twelve years 330 million dollar deal which I music is an overpass to yes but it him. He's not as good as an extra. And he's top ten player but he's not Trout has ever wondered two really good years where he's fulfilled kind of that potential but other than that it's been now. Maddeningly inconsistent I would say that charts number wanna move Cuba as number two. Luke Luke. Yes yeah. He's jacket on literally I know it. I don't Amish deceit well now with this contract for Trout you know that's is in the same territory as strollers contract expires at 22 when he wants oh. This out nation all right yeah this is the benchmark now but I think. I think if you're the Red Sox he can probably make pretty good case that you don't need to go above this. No double and on this is kind of you say okay look if this is the ceiling yet 36 million bucks a year. Nokia users 35 and called today I'd dim 400 mill called tonight but look at Milwaukee Kansas City they couldn't sonic at this. Other so much revenue sharing in baseball now that a lot of the small market teams can't if they want to but they choose not to because they get so much money from the big market teams these pocketed yeah as the partridge assigned made him chartered 300 million dollar contract. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange we're talking today about planning for retirement it's a big thing that you need to plan for. And really is the kind of thing that you only want to do once you don't want to have to un retire. Mike one of the things that people have to sort through discussing a you know what's the aged. France between myself and my spouse. Or am I retiring her we both retiring are already retired. If your spouse is pulling in a whole bunch of income while you're retired it might not make sense to pull your Social Security right away. So consider a bunch of factors that a big one is also life expectancy and that. Definitely comes into play with sort of security. In addition to Social Security another item that people have filed when it comes to retirement pensions. Is that the same type of conversation and same type the calculus the people need to go through. Certainly there's a lot of calculus there but there's oftentimes even beer one with pensions and narrow bit more rare today which is. What sort of survivor benefit to a and the option to take a my pension. It's not always clear cuts and I would caution here really think about it especially if you have a younger spouse that might be survivor here. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day it's. And now the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and sharks done us. Significant news as it relates to the polling airline air airplane crashes. Has been breaking and we're gonna talk about an off duty pilot who see one of the 737 Max. Planes from a crash talk about that story. We also have breaking news as it relates to Ford if you own shares of that company you wanna pay attention and then BMW. Is also it is interestingly enough hi everybody it's. Very truck with you here. And you know chuck guy and I'm looking at two this Boeing story I still can't get over the fact that these two crashes. May have been due. To somebody's unwillingness to conduct more training on how to fly these darn place. Yet in in pretty much it's if you look at how the dollars worked out. Every incentive out there is for the development of a new plane to be. As closeness similar to a previous ones we don't have to retrain and re type certify. Different pilots. And so pretty much what Bo has been doing for the last fifty years now since the first redesign of the 737 back in the 1980s. Is they've been going back and saying okay we're gonna keep the existing plane as similar as possible but squeeze a bunch of new systems in. And the reason why is that then. Airlines instead of having to Peter retrain pilots which is expensive time consuming and generally just you know painful process. Instead airlines are able to say. Yet we wanna buy that new 737 because we can use it without having to re train pilots very expensive shortcuts. It is an in here's the thing about shortcuts like this is. They work until they don't it's something where you say look we're gonna squeezing kind of push the limits in just cause it didn't fail yesterday when you took a shortcut. Doesn't mean that same shortcut isn't going to cause a failure tomorrow when it seems like. We've finally gotten to the point. Where they just tried to squeeze too much into this plane. And it's eight its cost some problems here. You know I don't wanna read too much into the story but I will tell you that Boeing shares are up today one and a half percent do you think this just this story. Indicating that they may have found the problem. Is the issue is kind of landing so some investors to say okay it's safe to put my toe back in the water. It could be a mean the other way that I tend to look at it is just that you know this is a stock that lost you sixty bucks off of 440 initial value. You know some lost about 12% of its market cap. After this and if you just do the numbers at CF a forty billion dollar cost affect you as our thirty billion dollar cost. And so you look at that and I think just when he can do the numbers out there again today he'd do this with the tragedy but were business shown were looking for a company. It's look it is Boeing gonna be forced to pay thirty billion dollars when it's all said and done because this. Probably not are they gonna lose thirty billion dollars in orders because this probably not. And so I think it's just investor kind of looking at in saying pave the stock's been bouncing around this bottom around 37375. For the last the year two weeks now yeah. Unless you get you know something else that comes out on this it seems like a lot of the worst news is priced in and again unless. Well as a fear of the unknown and you know me if they've figured out okay this is because. We tried receive. Fifty million on pilot training whatever the numbers I don't know dollar. Beefy if we train seat fifty million dollars in terms of pilot training. And now we have to spend that much. Well it it makes people feel a little bit better about getting on the plane. Right in and people are gonna say a cab I'm not as hesitant to fly explains selfless and continue to buy them they're manufacturing checked there. Put a sixty a month. Left the house beat that's. This plane is coming. And and for gosh I can't imagine who made the decision to skimp on pilot trade mean that that executive is going to be shown the door. It's the so it's not an executive at Boeing. That's not so no that's not a Boeing Boeing is trying to deliver planes to airless boat that responsible for pilot tree. No but they had. It's a kind of it in this and know Astro they'd like to the airlines when it's all said and done. If airlines say yeah we can we can buy this plane and not have to train our pilots yeah that's an airline decision. Coca. You know it's bought Boeing. We'll put together you know you're checklists and all of your manuals and everything like that and hey here's what you need to know what hears the recommended training and so forth but the reason airlines by this planes because they say. Yeah we don't need to provide certain types of training. It's if this is it's a systemic failure when it's it's the whole thing is is is is responsible. Breaking news coming out of forward. Yep port announcing that they are going to be building a new factory in Michigan. Four autonomous vehicles. It is going to watch open sometime in the next two years. And it looks like it's going to be working on commercial grade hybrid vehicles and self driving technology. Four production and so this is a big investment that is going into this Michigan plant part of Ford's 900 million dollar. Investment they originally announced back in. 27 teams this is not immune new money that's going in necessarily. But we're getting some clarity on where Ford is going it's not really an area where they've spent a bunch of money before me hybrids and autonomous vehicles we've always kind of thought they've been a little behind now they may be spending some money to catch up. Yeah in and to that and I looked at the stock and their earnings are about 92 cents a share and they're paying out sixty cents this year. In dividends. I would think that dividend is at risk. To a certain extent at least the for the full dividend probably. You know president I've been I'm not saying you know eliminated that. I mean paddy pay out sixty. If Caroline make it 92 and you have to put a ton of money into. A Thomas vehicles you know technology. And if you've got days slowing you know overall market for vehicles now yeah worldwide it's it raises further questions on that silly I don't think you're off base there. BMW warns of significant profit falls into when he nineteen all the auto makers seemed to be coming to terms with electric cars. And the fact that car ownership is probably gonna decline over the next to yours. Yet how much this is due to electric vehicles. You know that there's still such a tiny portion of the overall market you know in terms of the art now but does it eat you don't get the sense that their. The acute five years how many of percentages of sales will be electric. Like fully electric hybrids. That's our hybrids there when he percent. Maybe. Maybe having yet the savings rate if it takes 30% fewer workers to build them an electric car than Tennessee. You know coach internal combustion car. It's just the components are more expensive right now. Now image is trying to bend the cost curve on that when. When when they're looking at this I think the big thing is just you have slowing global demand for all these products and you look at where BMW's growth has been the last decade. And China and Chinese by 20% fewer cars this year than last year now. And last year they are about 20% fewer than the year before so. Well look at the age of our fleet right now are making our cars just keep getting older. And fewer people are buying them because of the migration of the city my daughter you know she's what thirty years old personal car. Yet the average age of a vehicle in the United States is now closing in on twelve years by the way. That's that's where we stand that was as of August. Of last year. To put this in perspective by the way you go back to 1980 how old do you think the average car was back in 1980. You last fall back in nineteen media and yes 67 years six point nine yeah. And now we're doing now or less terrible back to thank you if you got a 100000 miles on the car in 1980 that was law that you'd bragged about that. Yeah people. They expect to get to us yeah car. It's it's just fascinating to if you look at just it's been pretty much a Linear increase and I think part of it is they give the cars are better made today. But I think also with the cost of vehicles today people they'll want to push the longer as well. Sure do. There is a business growing with an Amazon. Could one need be worth more than retail or clout. We're talking about their business to business. Endeavor and I talked to somebody in the electrical supply business track he said Amazon is eating their lunch with contractors. Yet in this this is this being to be businesses just bin growing very very rapidly. And in terms of the you know the overall market for e-commerce B to B Bank of America's projecting this to be a one point four trillion dollar market. By 20/20 one. And you know you look at how fast Amazon is how rapidly Amazon is growing at this point. In the past two years the run rate of their B to B sales is gone from one billion a year to ten billion a year. That's you know what's. Need to be worked talking about they're selling to. IBM rate and and they're taking care of things that your office supplies in and other types of endeavors the contractor I talked to use an electrical supply business. And he said that Hewitt what's happening now is you know somebody's putting up that building a house and they need to buy. 120000 dollars worth electronics for that house yup they're about from Amazon and not from here at the old line holes like. It's a big shift demeaning get it went when you're seeing ten X growth in the two year period that pretty much means if if you're assuming a constant raiders something years that. In order to get there it's pretty much a tripling every year. In terms of your run rate that this is ridiculous that's huge. Well in their differences they can lose money in the sector right they can say okay we're beginning to Wear and staples were put staples out of business right yup they can do they can just look at with staples is charging in charge 5% lessons. But he doesn't matter what does that make money and yet they know eventually they're put staples out of business and then they'll be able to take over that sector you know. Scary stuff. Queuing significant. Blow to the company as aggressively defends its products decades thousands of similar claims. What struck me about the story Joseph who's there are now 111200. People who sued Monsanto over round. Yeah and if if they're all getting millions of dollars after this. Then you know has again once once you kind of set case president once once you have that to work with. You know in general. Yeah you tend to see you know things start to kind of spiral. I've wondered from the beginning if you get something like this I almost wonder means something almost like the tobacco settlements in order to just get this done for Monsanto. So how would you what would the process speed because you had companies like Altria. Right now it is survived the tobacco settlements but boy it was a longs walk. Or it in how long were they paying out claims for. Long time because the master I'm trying to think of what the the master settlement spelled out when it was also and onto that was back in 1998. Now okay. That was when they entered into it. And they are actually absurd they're still paying out from that so was 25 years and 206 billion dollars is the minimum amount. That they have to pay out. So. I wonder if Monsanto wins of getting in something similar before it's all said and done. We're a buyer must be really questioning there. You know logic for buying months and two at this point. Well meaning you'll get buyer stockings down 10% today. Is it today it's down 10% today. It's. That is tough. Fun fact the wealthiest 10% of the 122. Million households I didn't know there 122 councils in Republican. The old and estimated to top 10% loans 84% of all domestic stock in the United States. Quit concentration. And you wonder why with with the stock market booming but wages being so slow the last you know decade you wonder why people feel like they've been left behind. You know I. A I don't know if you've seen and try to get my hands on the Goldman Sachs that because it's consistent with the Fed study. The bowl you you know we talk about wage growth and how it's been slow. In you know relative to what we would anticipate with this unemployment rate yet. But the wage growth at the bottom end of the scale chuck I'm talking about people that were making. Eaten ten dollars or five years ago. That's where the wage growth is it your story after story about you know the cashier at McDonald's who was making. You know 825 an hour McDonald's in the choose working at Burger King bacon you know it's 55 an hour. She's now in the union make it twenty bucks an hour. And working as a welder. You know an electrical apprentice. There's been tremendous wage growth at the bottom end of the scale and then the upper end of the scale the white collar worker has not seen that same wage growth in some instances they've seen wage cuts. Well they haven't seen wage growth but they own these assets. Right and and that's the thing is the BS's growth has drastically outstripped wage growth good anecdote though about what you were talking about so I was down Jacksonville over the last weekend. And as you come at the airport in Jacksonville there's a huge Amazon warehouse there. And I asked the guys said there was what's the deal with this he says Willie came in about two years ago. And they hired a thousand people that I go oh interesting you know where where they get a from said. You go past any fast food restaurant now. They all have help wanted signs because Amazon came in paying fifteen to seventeen bucks an hour and all the fast food place were eight to ten. Near the end and that's what you've seen in those lower wage jobs. When they're both physical jobs yet if you can work at McDonald's you can probably handle labor associated with working and Amazon facility. If you're on your feet all day that way yet exactly. It's ID if it doesn't get talked about much and I think it's important I think having. You know if it's one thing to see a doctor go from making 700000 dollars a year to making 800000 dollars a year. But that doctors not and it really spend that extra 100000 dollars that they make but if you could take the ten dollar an hour workers at twenty dollars now shore. That money gets right into the economy and what it also does chuck is it takes people off of food stamps it takes people off welfare programs in general. It's just wrote a crime gets reduced I mean think in the the impact of wage increases. At the laureate. Far outweighs the impact of wage increases at the higher end a hedge fund manager that makes a million bucks a year. Doesn't changes lifestyle because he makes a picture 300000. Dollars a year. And. Yes exactly it's it's you again as you said that spending it gets into the economy more rapidly with lower wage earners because a lot of times they've. And that they need to spend that money anyway news. Like detail retail hated walloped jail paid him. I it would. Tucker of detail but then I just found this out its full justice to chew week. Poll if you don't buy or organic Canada's full pesticides. And I don't know that I could digest read issues. I know I did read. But I know people in the farming business too to see that whole thing they taste good to what you eat. We you have digestion issues with tail back and enjoy I don't exactly that's exactly. It's just like wolf. Well that you may end its like a secretary Maria. Yet dirty dozen for fruits and vegetables fruits strawberries spinach kale. Net two Marines apples grapes peaches cherries buyers tomatoes. Celery potatoes that are all things that I use everything you know administrative mormons. Avocado. Uh oh oh. I folks this is Mike Armstrong and I'm joined stay by estate planning attorney Todd lets you with your financial exchange quick tip of the day. Today we're talking about the top estate planning mistakes that you need to avoid you know Todd so many people create their state plan but they then failed to fund it. Explain why it is such a big mistake in what we mean by you know quite funding yours and he acts it's really huge and it you've got to look at it from two points of view one. You're spending money after spending money. To put together an estate plan to want it to work her right and if you don't put assets in your trust that you create its not working. In two very important respects one if you have a revoke Coble trust. And you don't fund it. Well then of course you're not avoiding probate because all the assets would be your name that's a big problem too. That language in that trust is what it's designed to help reduce estate taxes when one spouse dies. It shelters assets and and utilizes exemptions. There's nothing in there. It's not helping you do that nothing shelter so that that's not a good idea and from an irrevocable Medicaid point of view if you want it if you're in case you're concerned about doing that kind of planning can you imagine not funding those trusts. Not only do you have all the same problems that we just mentioned with a revoke global trust but one very important problem you never started your five year waiting period. And so if you create an irrevocable trust don't port assets in in five years goes by and you think your assets are protected from the nursing home. They're not. You better fund trusts you ban it something that they you know. DC all the time folks starting these escape plans for not buying public ski in the estate planning experts at Cushing and Dolan. Have written a brand new guide that details the top estate planning mistakes that you want to avoid you can request this brand new guy by calling 8668. Foray. 5699. That number again is 866848. 5699. Forget the 197071. Season. Bobby Orr scored 37 goals and had 102. Assists. Totaling 139. Points despite Bobby Orr spectacular seasons. The Bruins went on to be upset by the hated Montreal Canadians in the first round. In 1971. Playoffs the action that 139. Points for defenseman. Unbelievable. It's unfathomable. But the winner on this was Paul firmly in Massachusetts. And Paul is taking home. A fifty dollar gas card you can also called the Armstrong advisory group at 80393. 4001. Incident you're free no obligation consultation. Today. So Google is announced and and unveiled their new gain colts' media. And it seems to be. Well it's it's not a game there. It's a means of streaming games. What's the difference. So this is you know how right now you have to violate an ex boxer computer or. PlayStation or something like that if you wanna play games but this is going to be platform agnostic so pretty much as long as you have be scream that's connected to the Internet and buttons that you can press. This platform will allow you to play games on that screen. So whether it's an iPad computer this prank fox a Smartphone TV. You'll be able to play games if you can stream onto that platform so Sony might be shaking in their boots this morning this is no resist I saw Microsoft down Microsoft is as fascinating if they've been able to get this to work because here's here's the deal the big issue that you ran into on this are right now let's say that you buy a game. New York inputs into that game. Have been at. At your console or at your computer on your iPhone right so I just always used to use I think it was the Xbox but so what went when you press a button on a controller. It trigger something on your specific device. In this case there are actually gonna be streaming the entire team. Rome a separate server. So your input in theory has to travel to the server and then actually you know happen on the game at that sir that. So there could be more delay in latency on this which is the one thing I wonder about but. They may have found some wages to kind of mirror temporarily over to your device or something like that. But this is this is fascinating because you can have people on all different devices Google saying you don't need to buy our device. We just want to create a platform for you to play games so this out they make money. But the take account of the games that are sold on the clock. Now. Yeah I met this rate down would you pay four bucks for one of those games sets and ethnic used wanna keep in mind there's difference regain system. In an action game just to get sort that's what I meant Sony year to Daniel and I get like three to 500 bucks depending on the version that you buy and so this you don't have to buy anything. You can have your iPhone or your android phone and you could say look I just want to play a game on this stadium. Latvia and destroy going to be you know between nine and twenty bucks a month or whatever it is I don't know what the pricing is but that's it's sounds like it's going to be a Netflix for video games yet is what has been missing for years and I'm sure the games have been app purchases that you have to buy in this and they like this. Sort of thinking spree Tuesday and others after an. Aaron I am not a gamers and it'll it'll probably be a mix where you left some games that are free initially and have in app purchases where you have to make small purchases in order to continue and stuff like that how much is a game like if I if I want to buy with a what's the fort night very popular support nights free. So this is what's made four nights so successful is it's free initially but they have all these in app purchases of where you can upgrade and add different things Siegel pay anything up front. But if you want a certain item or access to a certain thing you might have to pay three dollars and then for another when he might pay him a war but yeah but Barry there are you know other teams that world used to light. Nam an article that call of duty read every night to where that will cost you you know just exit artists yet him. I. Well Sony and Nintendo shares went down AMD shares went out. Yet they are indeed the chipmaker they are a partner. In this streaming service effectively providing a lot of the backbone for it sounds like. And so AMD up on this news. Then proper state planning can be the difference between retiring comfortably are living out your days under incredible financial pressure. Creating in a statement is not a difficult process. Go to Amazon when they're ready to buy something one that. If it from Wal-Mart fun. JC Penney CE. Ditto I'm aria yeah it's it it got to the point where I realized it was last year when the leaf blower that I wanted to buy. I couldn't find at Home Depot but Amazon had. Why wouldn't you just go to Google and Google. Best course blight so I did so by I have a place that night and looked up the best leaf blowers that are out there. Coca and I found the one I wanted to buy. And then when I went to home Depot's web site where I wanted you know figured either at bide their dispute order and pick up at the store yeah they didn't have a and so I then went on Amazon and Amazon did have it and they would deliver to me next date no additional cost. And that was the moment we're pretty much said for just about anything I'm looking at Amazon first. Why wouldn't you got me leaf blower site you're finding people or. You know pay the Dexter if if that it sometimes even cheaper ams on but sometimes it's you know two bucks extra on Amazon. I'd rather bite on Amazon because I don't get that free two day shipping out ought to leave my house beyond. You know the the the thing I liked about it is that refuse to ever use the review section brochure. Definitely I I find that to be very helpful. Yeah and his videos of their their young users Adam. Pull add to their heavy users useful yeah are useful get those can be good. I generally skeptical written reviews on Amazon just because. You don't know who that like it'll say it's of their verified buyer but they could still work for the company are you know work for competitors something like that. And so on I'm in the less trusting of written reviews on Amazon but anything that's video or picture oriented yeah. So they have right now 52 point 4%. Of the e-commerce market. That's up from fifty if 40% in 2018 I mean. If JPMorgan had 52% the banking business. We would break them right if if ExxonMobil had 52% of the gasoline business we would. It's a units too much. I mean it like isn't it. Is is in this thing that prototypical. Monopoly. It is I mean that the big thing is is just to this point there when's the last time we had a big anti trust push in this country. You know it's even with the Microsoft stuff from the late ninety's and early two thousands it was no widespread push that you know was actually made there and so. You know be realistically would you go back it's been like. Forty years and you gotta go back to the breaking up of you know the telecoms and stuff like that to the last time we've had a real. Sustained push on the anti trust side of things and I think will be great to be honest you know I think you can get by with less regulation and more competition. I think that's the environment that I I always want to try to create. The if you know the problem is they grew organically. That that they didn't data and when I say the problem from an antitrust perspective. It's part if if they had done this through mergers and acquisitions. They price would have been halted in their tracks and but they did this through basically predatory pricing and you know it's been great for the consumer unity talk to people everybody. Use him as a unity in the and they love it oh yeah the the they response towards it is you know. Eight it's made my life so much easier you know but 74%. Go to Amazon and they've got 52%. E-commerce transaction that's. But you know giving examples so I ordered the last TV I bought again went out researched it bought it on Amazon. They they lost it in the warehouse somehow which I'm curious how you lose a T I stole QB exactly fell off the truck but you know so I'm samaritan okay what do we do so I'd be of finally contacted Amazon. There right. Yep we lost that use 10% off and we'll give you the same TV. I'm like look at to save 10% is too good an extra two days to get there I'm fine with that you know it's funny to me and the circumstances though you could very well be lying to and is on track and they still don't care. You don't sandwich you can say hey I never got the TV in your producer actually have a TV I think they'd know one a TV all day they call. And TV I think it's it's it's a big lately you got a picture of your package and a setting like that you gotta sign for delivery via on something that's smaller a gift if you're getting you know deodorant delivered yeah like. I'm sure you could say hey I never got this they'll send you another no problem yeah I mean to a smaller scale have done now we're just like head you know this is broken or. I'd Justin data and they were to send me another one yeah option and escalate I've had stuff that's come to me and you know it's been broken for whatever I'd give they don't ask for pictures like you Cindy in new went. My guess if I said I didn't get my TV. They'd probably want confirmation that I didn't get my TV. But have you ever seen the features they have in terms of tracking your packages. And they'll show you your car door with a package delta British have been now. But it it's amazing it amazing pace speaking of amazing companies that are. We wanna hear from you do it. Thanks Steward Barry's 263566. And let us know what you think about the stories we discussed. Your team to the financial exchange radio network. The European Union fine outlook. That's Google. One point 49 billion euros or one point seven billion dollars for abusing the dominance of the search engine to block competitors in the beach. Market of selling text ads on the surfers. On the search results that appear on third party web sites. But people are looking and destructive say he's now. Why why they can on globally they're the they're doing a good job and either they built a great platform they're making a big profit with. What's wrong with what they're doing. Well and in this case the EU's actions saying a Google ended these practices. About three years ago. But it's it's still is a fine for BO what they were doing at that point and so pretty much what was what was happening is. They were using their search engine. It's a pretty much blocked any competitive text ads that we're showing up on third party web sites. And so it was a Google's got you would agree platform but they were using the fact that they have so much search dominance to pretty much say. Yeah we're not gonna show any competitors' ads. And the United States that are BO found via our search. But that's it's it's a pretty strong abuse of market now. The market does seem to mind stocks up ten dollars. Yeah I mean it's this is a done deal on this is. A smaller fine in the previous two they've received from the EU and total they've now been find about nine point four billion dollars. And beat it seems like this kind of puts to bed at least would this specific issue between Google and the EU. We even talked about virtual reality much of late but I do this is coming out with a new product. It's gonna cost about 400 dollars and against the NBA's investing a lot of money. In virtual reality because they're geniuses. He had a good commissioner. They're they're Smart they're so what would the MBA is doing. Is there installing these 360 degree cameras in a number of different locations around. There. Effectively around their Arenas and the NCAA for March Madness is gonna be doing this a couple places to instill what that allows you to do. Is actually if you have a headset that's on you can actually look around just like you're in the arena. And and that's the promise of it is you know you being able to say look. I've got equivalent to a courtside seat for March Madness. They gets you will be able to walk around the re because the cameras are fixed. But it's something we can say what I can watch a game this way in this is where I thought there's been so much promise but it's been tough to get to this point. But it it seems like we're getting pretty close for live sports now to be able to have this not think the VR as we is one part of it. But he referred near conventional viewers watching on TV it's something where you have opportunities to see more paean stats on the display your fantasy teams or Tennessee team in the associated just with you your individual watching of the game there's so much you can do it. Like go to the game was ticketed due to attendance so imagine you have this for patriots game. And you can either go to the patriots game its nose bleed seats of the bunch of drunks or just sit on your living here coach well in Hawaii. It left in the game you know injure injured some people like the drunks. Yeah I enabled and look at all the other drunks just. Other other drugs like drunks but. It's it will have an effect I think for the sports that have a longer calendar so I think baseball basketball and hockey going to be more impacted. If you're a football team like an NFL team only has eight home games a year. There's always so many tickets he can actually you know you've got a limited number of seats across the entire season whereas. I'd be more concerned look upon. The Red Sox the Yankees the symptoms go giants whoever it is now this is a threat for like the Tuesday night game that no one really wants to go do but you know hey April yet April games where it's you know reining in forty degrees and neurological and enters you know twenty strikeout game. Those the ones that I think you're going to be more threatened because it's tougher to sell those tickets to begin with football they get eight trips a year they're all on Sundays or maybe a Monday night. The injuries to fill but the other leagues I think might have more trouble with this for me ticket perspective but all they have to do than is say look you wanna watch via VR. Okay it's going to be ten bucks fifteen gaelic they'll just charge for the VR experience eventually. You particularly Beckett did. Well if we're at where it's I think like thirty people have the appetite to pay that my under the I think if it is good enough that it's pulling people away from stadiums and then they'll charge for. If it's not good then they won't need to because it won't be pulling people away. I I outside I think sports. Is the and you like ice hockey as and it's it's so great on television. But if you could watch it with a virtual reality seek it because you know owners and you'd be standing behind the goal right now or he could be in the goalies net cash they have cameras there and oh yeah right yeah I mean I I think the sports. That would really have the application will be ice hockey. And again. Basketball would be tremendous don't go into the huddle right you know at when the coaches talk and all the players might be fat mobile to do that yeah you. Can you can't walk around you know again these are fixed cameras but think about like I think a sport like golf would be great. Where you know you could have me amen corner at the masters you can just look around for nearly a multiple different camera views. He went a tee box yeah you can be rated the tee box you can be at the green lake. It will be phenomenal pastures it regenerate. And integrate Joseph drones are drones could be part of it. You probably could I don't know if the three cameras are small enough now to really be drone based at least for this application but eventually you'll get there and and that would be. Now now you're talking. The Dow is down a 157. Points the S&P is down thirteen points NASDAQ down 33 points. Price of crude oil is making a big move up puts up one and a half percent at 5996. It's just creeping up. Eats at sixty dollar price tag will be back tomorrow with another edition of the financial exchange. Thanks for tuning it.
