Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Well it's just you might hear today on Monday we got Matt one of the board talkers out. Tending to. Good data to get a little extra time with new issue. With the closed down three months now for. Tucker 2.0 so both Tucker and the travelers the line Preston Tucker Tucker hurt a little bit yeah. I would say Tucker's last alive and analysts six months ago talker his own. He still showed he's been hurt a little bit but we got a whole bunch of Bob. Is this news to dig into today starting first with an update on the situation with Boeing over the weekend the Department of Transportation coming out and really beginning investigation. Of the the FAA's approval process. For the Boeing 737 Max what what do you make of first thing is what what's going on here actually Mike Brooks a first. I mean that this was subpoenaed that came from march elevenths that business the day after the after the crash this came out and news started being looked at and I think if first things first whenever you have a situation like this you obviously want to. Had it locked down on data communications seek new back and CE OK what were the communications between Boeing and the FDA during his approval process that's what's going to be locked. The fact that this is being researched I think really starts to call into question. What exactly the relationship between Boeing and the FAA looks like. And in I think you specifically what's what's really interesting the more than I've read up about this story in the more of that kind of dug into what's going on here so. The 737. Is a sixty year old plane at its core. Sixty years old. And pretty much what bone is done is every fifteen to twenty years. They have gone and they've updated in some way in order to. You just try to keep it competitive. In the in today's day and age so as an example if you go through and you kind of would just how the evolution. Proceeded so he had the original Sears and the 737 launched Ian set in 1967. Then you had what was called. The 737. Classic series that launched in 1980 force of seventeen years after. You can have a 737 next generation which is what most people flying today at the 7376070800. In 900. Those launched in ninety three's about nine years after the classic and then you've got the Max which. You know was ruled out and in originally. First built I think in 26 team was its first commercial flights. The art when he seventeen was its first commercial flights about every anywhere from ten to twenty years bone comes out and they say he organ update 737. The question people need to be asking the question that the Department of Transportation here is asking is. Why in it in the answer quite simply for Boeing is money it Easter cheaper not only for bone but also for the airlines. To effectively not have pilots needing to get additional certifications and go through new training and so forth. In and stayed maintain the same qualifications they've had previously despite the fact that the 737 Max. Doesn't share a ton with the original 737. Aside from the name in the overall kind of shape and how things neo work there but there's so many changes that they can be a shoe worn this all in. In the reason for that when it's all said and done. It's dollars it's if airlines can go to Boeing and say hey we want you knew 737 do we have to change into it train pilots and bonuses no you don't have to train pilots. It's a lot cheaper for the airlines to operate that plane and that's why Boeing is tried in really what they've stretched to 737 over the last near sixty years. To steal be you know kind of a new plane an old plane shell. Yeah and it looks like if you go and look at the history and I think what's going to be you know come into the surface of the next few years. Is probably years and years of self regulation by Boeing and general. I know it to suasion I guess for FAA employees to really look in on what's being done there's toward twelve investigate investigation that found that. Yeah FAA employees to. Reviewed the safety features. And Jim if they spoke up about anything really faced retaliation for doing so and that is not the type of regulatory environment. That you want to have when it comes to life or death up you know when it comes to life or death operation. No it and I think that the big questions that are being asked now is okay. It's one thing for Boeing sit still want to say hey this is the same plane as it was before. But the question that I think needs to be asked that was tape was the FAA effectively rubber stamping this not really taking as close of looked as they should've. At this and on top of that you know you talk about the you know what what Boeing is looking at what they're trying to do now. They're trying to they've been for a while trying to come up with the new single. I will narrow body airliner. Ticked kind of replace both the 737757. Kind of a hybrid there you know they're they're kind of give that that's their. It's in their intermediate term plans. At this point. And that that projects now okay. I believe the the project is yet here it is so this was the it's it's project Yellowstone and there's three real projects that have come out of that the first was a 777. But the the next one was near kind of replacing and tying in the 737 a 757. And the 737 Max was kind of a hold over a kind of a temporary pay until we get this done you know that this is coming gonna be what we run with. They might need to speed up plans that that next plane that's kind of what I come to one this is looking instead of trying to. You know just maintain proper margins in in kind of run with what's worked at this point. They might need to adjusted via kind of maintain confidence and move forward kind of speed up production of that next. Claimed the promise you developing you know a multi billion dollar airplane system when it's all said and done. You can't just push a button get that don't know night you know this is still going to be eight years from now when it's finally be a potentially Don. And not to mention I mean how many outstanding orders for the 737 accent over five violent Al sorters and I think I mean you can't fill that right now with the plane that doesn't exist right eights down. A Boeing is facing a real. Existential issue at this point so. It down what twelve and a half percent of the time before for the scratch. Here's question for you let's say that you're running bone and oh that you're not but I'm gonna put in the upper new gear you're in the CEO's seat of Boeing. What our priorities one into form what are the things that you need to do right now to make sure that you are able to get this. Where the way first things first I don't I don't have a firm guide for how to do this but yeah first things first you need to reassure the world public that your focused first and foremost is safety. That ad has to be here and first overall Jeff I don't know I get that done but that has to be the key is. Our planes are safe this is these are the changes that we're making to ensure the general public that we are in you have to get. All the world governments on board saying yeah we've reviewed all the safety procedures now and based on the new updates that Boeing has ruled out based on the new training policy is that they've done. Weakened certified effect these planes are safe to fly. So when when I look at this that the single biggest step that I would Tate. At this point and again this is this going to be kind of a tough putt to do but I at. I still think it is doable when it's all said and done. If I am bowing. I am going in and again I don't know how long this fix is necessarily gonna take so you know it could be among the could be two months can be three. We're not quite sure because while we think we have we know honed in on the problem somewhat. We don't quite know what the fix is going to before it yet and so depending on that. If I'm Boeing Boeing keep in mind still is making the previous generation 737. I go to every one of my order customers in yet it would not be pretty for them but I often say look instead of taking 737 max's. Do you want the existing the current version of the 737 that were still make. And I know that's how much cheaper and you do whatever you have to go from a pricing standpoint okay America's beer you gotta make the dollars work. But if you know that this is not going to be a quick fix on the Max if this is something where you've got to go back to the drawing board. And you might need to go through FAA certification. Certification process again. That's a process that takes a week. I mean on the other hand reared get rumors on Friday that I mean that's why stocks don't stock moved up on Friday it was there are rumors there's going to be a you know one month software update in the name of it was going to be hunky dory. I don't know why but for some reason when you've had two plane crashes in the span of five months. Doesn't seem like a one on software and take care if even that doesn't seem it's just. It doesn't feel like it should lake how to Y no you fixed it if you've been able to catch this quickly and beat if you could patch this quickly why you don't sold at this point. You know like that's what doesn't really reassure me so. I'm looking at this from a perspective of if I'm Boeing and I don't know what is out there because I don't know how bad this could be. And you start making contingency plan had a full those orders yet. That's that's where I kinda come to about aiming at and there's so many logistical questions behind that mean they're making 52 of these a month right now getting up to 57 month. And they even in a short time period turnaround their manufacturing to be able to produce field play at this point so I even have the parts to do and don't. No thinking get to that scale necessarily but here's the thing for the old generation 737 and again this is it's what's called the 737 next generation that's what came prior to the Max yeah. They made 323. Of those last year. So they're making about 2526. Of those a month the previous couple years there are making close to 500 so. You know it's it's certainly is a question hey can you make that Monica's. And it goes plus now the the orders for 77 men well and in look there's there's probably when it's also been done again I I'd. I hesitate to say this to say I don't know for sure on the with aviation projects like this. If you're using generally the same usual laws I'm guessing that a lot of those parts carry over you know when you're talking about. You know the screws that are used on airplanes the sheet metal and things like that there's probably not a ton of changes I've from the wings the engines that knows that that's where you typically see changes. In planes like that but you know this is a this is a growing problem for Boeing just because if this is a core part of its business it's it's not a it's not a play in this last year sexy and I get the 737 NC how when a plane you say like OK this is the trying to get me there here to there it's gonna get me from point a to point B. It's really important that they make a play in the goes from point a to point B is seamlessly cleanly as possible in right now they've got questions on their most popular aircraft effort. Purely hypothetically here. What do you think happens if during this whole investigation we find out that. Boeing was exerting immense pressure on the FAA to just kind of ignored there normal process for proof what does that clicked. Is what does that look like for the for the US government. I mean is that something that's abnormal for any large company. You know like when a large company doesn't lobby on behalf. You know so. I don't think you know we're getting to a point where. You know you're gonna learn something new one that front because every company spends. It you talk but every industry they spent billions of dollars lobbying. To be able to do business is easily as possible I just hope we don't find something that they were cheating in the way it's able to. I think it's unlikely just because again. Up a plane crashing is kind of a binary event either does or doesn't it it's not like Boeing has a bad safety record in general prior to their own safety record. Is outstanding. Prior to this so you know whether or not they were exerting influence that the proof is in the putting aids it's just a case of when you have. That kind of input and whenever you go and you have something where there's a problem that you convince yourself you're able to ignore. Eventually you get to a point redo of the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back then and don't just might and to. That might just be what they've gotten to is they've made a series of decisions over fifty years that. Hate each one potentially added risk but didn't actually bring the whole thing to a halt. They might have finally gotten to the point where they they they did so. Whoa we'll continue to update you but. It's you know still some uncertainty as far as bone goes let's take a break when we come back we talk about apple and how they're going to take on Netflix and also. FaceBook trying to show users more local news. But it is no more local news how the heck are they gonna do that billion after this break. So we'll bounce actually exactly a week from today. You're gonna have about a thousand people from the TV and movie business heading over to Cupertino California which were Apple's headquartered in order for Tim Cook. To lump supposedly. Launched their new. TV and video and everything streaming service. To a packed house that they're hoping you know will erupt in laws. When he does. Have you gotten to the point where you're just so saturated with difference. Television show options that you're just. I don't even know it's like I have no interest in this whatsoever now granted I don't have an apple device so maybe I can't get it anyway but. I just don't see how Apple's possibly going to differentiate themselves here. It fuels and in man maybe you can even chime in on this. It feels like there's too much choice in too much content. In the old and not enough money they can actually go towards lake. I just you know people always ask me all of you watch this of you watched that it's like how this late there's just so much content that comes out now. That and get this kind of comes off as you know grumpy old man nearing for the past but. Man it really was simpler when you just had you know the networks and maybe a couple other cable channels to worry about instead of owed Netflix is launching a thousand different shows in the next three years like. So let's think about just all the different options that you can pay for these days so there's HBO. Showtime. It stars still like a come together around a Cinemax and an answer considers for the Amazon Netflix Hulu. Now this new apple one. You're gonna have the Disney streaming options and now we also including justly streaming services for cable TV so late would you include like you DirecTV now replaced the when I I see that is just this game and you're just paying the same channel line up as you look on basic cable a term like the third party content creators is fortunately Wal-Mart scrapped their planned they were producing there's not going to to have. Which. In fairness to Wal-Mart adventures and idle six it could probably put together some pretty entertaining stuff just. Here I can't security camera footage security camera footage is cameos of people doing ridiculous things in Wal-Mart but I don't pave there's a lot of that on YouTube. Yeah putting to death for Wal-Mart thirty has original streaming content old YouTube yeah yeah that's a big good point. But you know it's how many of these can go what is what are you pay for. I pay for HBO kept in Netflix. So I had I guess technically Amazon has an on Amazon I'm so yeah I guess those three. So I used paper Netflix I don't anymore I don't pay for HBO on a passed answer currently the only one game four's part of games on subscription. Like you do by ice stream my basic cable through. Playstations Sony company they stream cables I don't like the eyes casts that. Obviously just paper but I am pretty much fully committed to pay of new Disney's description of that comes I don't care what church. You can economy than you like that that is going to happen because I just watched one about 21. Is quite good. And nothing's gonna after you've seen this many times and listen to this vote on tomorrow and don't wanna every single day of the last month and that's that's attracts. A lot of people got to that point with frozen when that game I think it was a similar thing where every. Two to five year old kid in the world just like. Frozen again it's you know no you can't there's no more frozen it's banned. It's done jail. Do. There's a sequels on the island. Reality of I digress so I mean you know they've got some big names Reese Witherspoon Jennifer Aniston brie Larson Jason memo. And Night Shyamalan and Steven Spielberg. Abrams I opted to do stuff thanks Steve Corel is going to be in the first shows that they're doing so I mean you know again. Possibly some good shows and be content but I just don't know. Win people are gonna reach a tipping point in saying on and spend 130 dollars a month and different streaming contradict. The the guy that I would go after is Richard Butler who had been HBO at the Helm there for the last six years until he just left after the yeah it's not a merger. I still think he'd be great get for apple but this does bring us to our whole question of the day it's up right now one financial exchange show dot Thompson go over there invoked. Do you currently pay for any TV streaming services. Are answers are known. One or two were more and I have three song gonna vote to a more so by a guess on the V streaming gluten in this case. How many do you have. Mike I've won these government accounting and is if you have an ams on subscription and you know watching those shows that has counted against your whole bunch of us Serbs mat what about you. Mike couple stocks moving up in positive territory today let's start first with Edwards Lifesciences what's what's going on within has an up 8%. Yet they just released the results of a clinical trial that showed that there are Sapient three trans capped her aortic valve overcame the outcome as compared with surgical results. It sounds like they're their results for about 75%. Safer than the surgical competitor. So that's move in the stock up pretty substantially about 8% this morning as you mentioned. Deutsche Bank stock up about four and a half percent this is good news for companies that has lost about 80% of its value over the last five years so. It's a good news to doesn't put Humpty Dumpty back together again but at least you know you got the glue. Now you're as they are currently trading at to enter. A five year low right now they are up at 926 share right now about four and a half percent on news that they're going to be. At least exploring a merger their mean German competitor Commerzbank. Which the German government actions pretty big stake in. In this is it Deutsche Bank is company that acting just generated its first profit in five or six years last year since twin fourteen Syria while. Most US banks have had a pretty substantially recovery and proffered storage a bank has been lagging in that department and presumably this would help and I grows in scale and improve efficiencies that. Yes still a lot of concern with regards to Deutsche bank and to some of the essence that the carrying on their books in a result there's a lot of thought to payable whole bunch of assets that really might not be worth a whole lot of anything and it's. I think this kind of interestingly this this potential merger here I almost wonder. If it's just trying did you get some kind of late following the Deutsche Bank just. You know get something going there is otherwise in this big concerns that if you have another downturn Deutsche Bank could end up being casualties there area when it's all says substantial risk there. So that is Wall Street watch presented by leader bank. Get some texts in regarding the the streaming questioned the poll question it's up on our website financial exchange should dot com do you currently pay. For any TV streaming service. Early results so far no and 46%. Of people responded that way. 123%. In two were more 31%. So far so we'll more than half of our listeners are paying for some sort of streaming service you and some of the questions or responses one from 50 wait prime at ten bucks a month is too much. Beat you you could make a case it might be if we're just the streaming. Yeah if you're only using of the streaming I completely agree because compared to Netflix content is just. It's and bear but whenever I mean I'll give you like I used so obviously at or whole bunch on Amazon surges the free shipping from that is his big forming. I use Amazon music at no additional cost and so that normally if you have apple music or something like that the B ten bucks a month right there. And then on top of that if I also get new some content. Hates it it's all gravy forming Dutch have a bunch of fat free day I don't use it but doesn't it was a provide prime members much free data storage to. Yeah what is it that they have there. Let me see that they actually have like a ton on their if you go when and look at what they actually give you. Yes he get all the stuff that we just outlined and then. They also give you access to a whole bunch of ebooks. Including your prime membership yet you have to pay for those who you get access to audible also books on tape and things like that so like this whole it's actually there if you wanted to. Use it yea get the whole budget you. Photos stored at ray and stuff like that or Arthur Conan Doyle booking college because it is offering on Amazon. Organized as we spend your time. Oh sorry you had somebody else text today and I hear explained. How the streaming services work the PlayStation view for instance appears asking that saves people money that was is that when you have as well and it's so pretty much there's a number of these out there the biggest ones that is there are PlayStation view DirecTV now YouTube TV. Sling sling. So I think those the four biggest ones as Eizenstat is we obviously owned by Google's laying on the side DISH Network have the lead up DirecTV now obviously by director Ian AT&T. And then PlayStation by Sony in pretty much what they all do is they allow you to pay it's a standard subscription so they have different tears anywhere from. They generally about 45 up 85 bucks a month now broadening its wing for maybe thirty yet Ellison 25 or thirty of countries lowered their prices. And pretty much what these do is they allow you access to channels that normally would be on cable TV the differences. When you have cable right now it in most cases pretty much all phone. If you wanna connect to multiple TVs there's additional charges for those additional TVs and then the additional set top boxes each month whereas with one of these streaming services. You get access to it in you don't have to pay for additional hook ups to additional TVs and things like that. And so in my case. It took my monthly bill for. Near TV and TV services for about a 180. Dollars a month. When he added near all of Netflix and all those in previously. For about one media month down to about ninety's in 95 an hour and I am tear and so it from my perspective. In doing it I see about a thousand bucks a year and I did pretty much the exact same stuff that I did previous right. And so. I recommend just about everyone at least look into these services because you know I hear so many people. Who you know I'm amused and they say. GM spent and you know 160 bucks a month on my my Verizon I was built on slide through now expanded to fifty a month says Comcast and spend 400 dollars a month to DirecTV. These streaming services it's not necessarily that they have everything but most people don't use everything. And so it's a case where you can get my my package I pay 45 bucks a month. About 65 channels which is from I don't watch that much TV I watch live sports a little bit the History Channel and occasionally need to watch something dumb so. You know I put on HGTV just that near get envious about other people's houses and stuff. Like this of the cheapest option that I'm aware about there is slowing TVM different package options and the cheapest ones fifteen dollars a month. ESPN TNT TBS CN CNN AMC HDTV Comedy Central History Channel in the airing again. And I think this is like 35 channels and it's most of what I would be interest in watching. In the other when you're from 50 wait charter charges seven dollars a month for each cable box or just for the privilege of having a charter cable box. You're spending 84 dollars a year I don't have to worry about. Now you know it's it's and that's money that again you can say even put to use and other things that just find to be far more fulfilling than C cable box sitting on my TV you know accept my you have your predicted this in the past I think these costs are going to do justice to cheaper additive but I'm gonna enjoy it achieved this while I can't yet you know if someone wants to criminally under charge me for an extended period of time. I'm more than happy to civil chrome there's a pattern to allies are doing but you know if if they wanted to sell these products at a loss to me. Taken lake I won't object to that. Other stories from the tech. World. Faced with this one I found really interesting axis of FaceBook. If they did a survey in the they've learned about two years ago. That's a lot of its users wanted more local news which again I'd act have enjoyed reading like the local newspaper and some of the calculus stories that happen in just in town meetings things like did you get you know we could town meetings are paying local high school teams going to state finals this stuff like that in all this athletes going off to that school on scholarship or just terse it was pulled over for a do do you at 3 am on Tuesday afternoon I had those types of things we know ice front store supple suffers melt down in nice asked bills have all kinds of things. The problem is that. So many local newspapers and gone out of business in the last decade. The FaceBook is having a really hard time. Providing local news for people simply because the Internet. Killed a local news. So more than one in five newspapers have closed their doors in the last decade and a half. Half the counties in the nation have just one newspaper in 200 counties having no local newspapers and yeah that that speaks to the the serious. Issues that's going on so I mean Facebook's. I wanna say that they're making kind of paid. I guess more evade. Fake kind of attempt to support local news I don't mean to caught ache but it's more of a PR stunt in my mind they're donating some dollars to. You know programs to bolster local news industry but. You know I don't think Facebook's ever going to be in the business of saying hey we're gonna start covering local. So if if you look at how newspapers historically made their money. Some was from subscriptions that the bulk of that the bulk of the revenue came from advertising together you know just generalize or on the paper but the big the big money was classified. It's via. And I look at how would that that business model used to work and I really wonder if you ever going to see you local newspapers get back that not even in hard copy form but even just in you know online formats if they can get. Back to where they were previously. I mean unless you have people that are willing to pay for the local news. I don't see how you get there in Leicester yeah in less you have gay. But even then the bulk of the revenue didn't come from people paying for local news it was people paying to place ads in front of local people right and and that's my point is that. You're going to have to have a change in the business model their people and the pony up you know monthly subscription costs rather than having knows the revenue coming from advertising which I don't think people. I don't to be willing to pay for. Now an eight in the this gets I think at the core of a lot of problems that we have just in general I'm I'm convinced that the solution to. If you look at why people are you know whether they're dissatisfied with business politics whatever it is. The more I look at the issue the more convinced that we have to go smaller. And kind of away from these global idea isn't in Ford's. You know smaller more community based tight publications and community based businesses and things like that. And it's it's tough to do that today's day and change because there's that all the financial incentives point towards getting baker. They all point towards getting licked right there's a reason why you don't see companies say yeah we wanna get 20% smaller this leg of that that everything points towards getting bigger. But the problem is that when when you get to the point where you know FaceBook and cool control so much of what people see through their algorithms. You're not really discovering things for yourself you just discovering what they want you see based on what you've already seen before and it's. It's really tough to be a publisher in that environment because. You can you can't cut your teeth on you meet good meaningful news stores to that's not the stuff the goes viral right it's just it's not how works today so. Unleaded FaceBook is changing their algorithm to say focused more on news less of that seven more on the local stories. That there could be an argument there but again and ride it yet revenue yeah itself. Let's see if time for one more story before we go to break. Manufacturing in the United States two straight months of of pullbacks here in terms of US factory output. That output decreasing by point 4% in February of phone point 5% in January. And in particular February little bit more of a broad based decline here in this matches data that we've been seeing out of Europe about Meehan declining factory orders there as well. And I think February is even helped out in some way based on whether that I think February had some a little bit of the bump from the utility sector and manufacturing so. It might have even been worse were February notes to miserably cold month. You know you've got two months in a row now Europe I think this comes back to a comet differed unit witches. Anyone of these stories as not significant but when you added up with all of the you know random bad manufacturing data you're getting out of Asia when you can combine it with you know closures of manufacturing plants all across Europe you get some real. Frightening questions about global growth going for. So that's just again another little bit of a negative data point there. On the positive side things we get a report from the national association of homebuilders this morning came in pretty much in line with estimates at 62 that's great where was the previous month so pretty much march and February. Both coming in new stronger than we had been in the previous six months so. Housing for the concerned that I had on that front. Seems at least be shown some stability not necessarily the growth that you need but at least some stability at these levels and that's good to see heading into. Were pretty much heading right in the peak spring housing C right now I mean we are we are getting cranked up on that front. Quick break here when we come back we're gonna let you know what's going on with Renault Nissan Mitsubishi with their leadership and also. They'll walk away story. In terms of how the US is trying to keep them out of allied countries that you know right after this break. Still assistance does talk to him. Owned being arrested in Japan and dismissed from the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance. Seems like there's some further shake ups happening that seemed to point towards. Friends and allies of don't being this early forced out but certainly not being welcome in the the upper reaches of that alliance and yet you know I think a lot of our personal coverage of this of this. Story has really been about the Japanese governments and Japanese judicial since treatment of Carlos don't. But these moves would at least imply. Perhaps that the judicial system geared jailed him inappropriately and does not have the correct. New systems had to deal with these types of cases but. There's clearly some level of guilt here. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange we're talking today about planning for retirement it's a big thing that you need to plan for and really. Is the kind of thing that all security. And I would caution people to really think about that a little bit harder so you know topics that I would be discussing a you know what's the age difference between myself and my spouse. I our am I retiring her we both retire here already retired. If your spouse is pulling in a whole bunch of income while you're retired it might not make sense to pull your Social Security right away so consider a bunch of factors but a big one is also life expectancy and that. Definitely comes into play with some security in addition to Social Security another item that people have when it comes to retirement. Pensions. Is that the same type of conversation and same type calculus the people need to go through certainly there's a lot of calculus there but there's oftentimes even bigger one with pensions and there'll be more rare today which is. What sort of survivor benefit to a and the option to take in my pension. It's not always clear cuts and I would caution you're really think about it especially if you have a younger spouse that might be survivor here. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. What we've made it through another week and the week. The whole week of business news ahead of us Federal Reserve's meeting on Wednesday drone Powell's gonna speak that afternoon which is always. Fund for a couple minutes and markets until it's not. We've got the national association of homebuilders came out with their data this morning showed housing you know shown some stability which is good to see. Other data that we get coming out this week weekly unemployment claims on Thursday just like we get every week. Existing home sales that's a big when the comes out on Friday actually four the month of February so we get existing home sales data after really disappointing January. Partly could have been because the government shut down wreaking Havoc with you know mortgages are being originated. But you know we we got a whole bunch this week. But where we're starting is with the story that really you know escalated last week. And that is with both wing now facing additional scrutiny from the Department of Transportation. Looking at pretty much the process of the FBA used to approve. The 737 Max design and also training schedule for. Pilots and you're starting to get the you know the stories of the last seven years about. It just how much control Boeing had over their own safety procedures vs what the FAA was actually reviewing. And they were to see a lot of that numerous C a lot of questions. Risen about how exactly Boeing. Exerted control of the FAA and vice Versa and whether there was really true level of independence between in that agency. So Boeing stock on that dues down an additional 2% dating kind of bounced around at 370 range. The last couple days now so we'll keep you informed on what's going on there but no no new. No new news I guess today at this point just. In the investigations into those crashes continue and we'll keep you updated if anything happens there. Now we're also now a week away from apple us supposedly debuting their streaming video service. And this led both. Matt. Mike and me to wonder. And how people out there use the streaming services to begin with Nancy can head right now at a financial extreme show dot com. And vote in our poll question in terms of pain do you currently pay for any TV streaming services and in terms of these services so. If you have Amazon prime and you watch any of the prime video that qualifies a few of Hulu that qualifies Netflix HBO show time. Cinemax. Stars. What else. We're not counting like that DirecTV now or anything now I'm not caring that that's a streaming of regular channels cable channel lineups though. Yeah I think you covered me in one's Netflix Amazon Hulu or the big theory. And then you have all the other ones. I think that I think that pretty much sums. OK so if you subscribe to any of those are even if you don't go vote in our poll is one of the options is hey I don't subscribe to these 44% of respondents so far said that 26% of people who said they subscribe to one and 29%. To a Morse about a 5545. Split at the moment. In terms people subscribing to TV streaming services as if you're paying for and Amazon's description and you're not using the. I'm. Video service or the prime music. There's me there's a lot of good stuff there may go check it out we are paying for something that your not necessarily using if you're not yet known so. We've got to IPOs that may be happening out that that will be happening most likely. In the next week I'm not sure how to pronounce his company's it. Life never heard this one late but so yeah. My father. So the bigger over competitor in the United States lift is going to begin our live there IPO. The valuation are looking for is to be 21 to 23 billion dollars. Between 62 and 68 dollars a share. Pinch. We'll see what they fetch. And in terms of the valuation on lift previously so that they're looking again for somewhere round at 21 to 23 billion dollars. In valuation at this point. It in and really if you go and kind of look at it historically. The last round at the race was in June of last year and they raised 600 million dollars at that point. And it value the company at fifteen point one billion dollars this represents a 50% premium. From there so if if you're an investor who was going out and saying hey I don't own any lift now once it goes public I'm going to buy it. If you if it's still at these same prices immediately after IPO and you're paying 50% more. Then investors who got in just nine months ago. Yeah look at this in in I'm not saying don't buy a lift but he you know went when we put some context around this. The overall stock market at this time OK if we go and take a look. At you know how well the S&P 500 is done over the last nine months just as a point of comparison. Now pull the data announced go all the way back there. If you take a look again the S&P 500 jewel large cap companies 23 billion dollars lift would be a large cap company. The S&P 500. Is up about 4%. Over the last nine months. Okay even what what do we think it was kind of a high flying stock what's like what what you're doing Google or Amazon or something like that works Netflix so even if we take a look. At Netflix as an example over the last nine months. Again Netflix people typically think of high lead you know volatile high upside high potential downside stock. Netflix is pretty much completely flat over the last nine months so. I'm not saying that lift is a bad invest because I don't know I've I've not looked at the numbers. But you're getting a price that is 50% higher than it was just nine months ago. At a time when not really anything else is 50% higher. It is that some stocks that are but overall you look at the overall S&P 500 about 4% up over that time. You gotta be asking yourself why did lift performed ten times bettors because it actually work that war. Hey is there is they're just some some ups all that's going on here. Don't object in here I'd be really inch to see. And how you measure that. How much does the publicly traded stock market really represented a total of those US companies that do business. It it's been shrinking of the last few decades is strong intuition. In I'd go to number of companies that are probably trade has gone wade since the 2000. I believe the market value has pretty much so. Just to make some understand the question you want know how much how much of US businesses are represented by the S&P 500. Now how much of US business is represented by publicly traded vs non. OK gotcha. I don't mind my sense is that it has been shrinking. And there has been a lot more value created in the nonpublic. Private equity sector of the economy and the publicly traded SP 500 now etc. I don't know too good question I asked them to good question asked by the way lift just to give some information on their revenue they did 2.2 billion dollars in revenue last year. As soon to be pricing this way their pricing almost ten times revenue which is steep but. Any growth companies are steeply to say so. Mean it just to give you some additional information but certainly can go the SEC web Saint Paul the neo relevant filings and everything if you while wanna take a look. But you know there's always cause I always tell people exercise caution with IPOs because. You know people come to mean they'll say ORG but FaceBook was so good that we have people remember FaceBook. They don't remember fit it they don't remember. Twitter do they'll remember. Al Bundy or snapped I don't remember blue apron I don't remember all these companies that word the next big thing. That that that splat and so FaceBook is the exception that proves the rule would beat what could be a great cup I I don't know. But these companies are far from a sure thing when they IPO just be careful as a poke around. No statistic for a check of our stomach for in the 1997. Or 7600. Companies that were publicly traded on US stock exchanges. As. The end of seventeen. You had 3618. Now I'm sure part of that is just companies getting bigger and merging but I think a large portion of that too is being taken private. Man that's only half as many companies now the publicly traded as there were what was that in the late ninety's yet two decades. Quick quick quick quick consolidate and I'll tell you that much. Let's take a break now actually in when we come back. Are we talking about the United States. Who's locked in this battle to keep while way technology that the Chinese wireless producer out of the United States. They're also trying to keep wallowing away from US allies but let's know how they're doing that and what. He's it's pretty easy to compete it's not easy to win because the questions can be occasionally difficult. And there's a lot of people compete exe gotta be quick but here's how it works you text desk at 63566. If it's your first time texting just text the word bear that gets he went to our little club. With the right answer through the eleventh person with the right answer you get a fifty dollar gas card here's the question. On this day in 1892. Canadian governor general Frederick Stanley AKA lord Stanley. Donated a super challenge cup as an award for the best hockey team in Canada. And so the Stanley Cup is going to be the topic of our troop request which is really sad that there is not here in of this one human. Which United States based NHL team has won the most Stanley cups again. Which United States based NHL team has won the most Stanley cups designed caveat there. Makes him you're not looking at our neighbors to the north okay which United States being in the United States based NHL team has won this most Stanley cups. Text does it 63566. The eleventh person with the right answer. Is going to get he fifty dollar. Gas card. The United States not content with simply trying to keep while away products out of the United States. Also trying to put some pressure. On allies most notably the UK in Germany. Trying to keep their products out of those countries as well but the get some push back in particular from Germany it seems like. They are and I think you're going to get that whenever you're trying to influence. Other countries on their own security protocols but. Let's take it from the united United States' perspective here if they have true evidence and are real concern that we always going to share. You know information across these networks with the Chinese Government. Then this is exactly what they should be doing or maybe they're not doing in the right way but. Mean a thing about it right let's say you share. Sun. You know highly sensitive data with the Germans because there's threat of terrorist attack differences or threat of something going on in China. And you're delivering that via a while way connected network. You might have legitimate concerns that being shared with somebody you don't wanna chaired. You you certainly would end. Would I would imagine is what we read this articles from the New York Times what or reading in the New York Times this is kind of the publically facing version of this year. I have no doubt that both the US if you name it the US German and British Indian. Every single one of those governments. Has actual information on whether or not China is using while way to spy to get it they know this it's not something where they have to pick up. You know you don't see Mike Pompeo pregnant the New York Times ago. The times says that China's buying music wallet they know. They know yes or no whether or not this is happening and so from arches tape making a decision. Okay do do's and if it is happening do with the benefits of using this technology out. Weigh the potential costs does it surprise you that this is being done this publicly that we're talking about this this publicly I would. Think that this is something where the United States government is going to our allies and saying OK here is the evidence. Here's the private evidence that we're gonna share with you as to why we think this is a very bad idea. Now it's all come out with a joint statements it seems like the pressure that's being put on these countries being done rather publicly. I think it's because when I look at. The way I read this what's being done publicly here. Is tied more to the appearance of the US putting pressure on China from a trade perspective. More than the actual security concerns. And so I would imagine behind the scenes it's. Hey here's a laundry list of everything we know about these while wait chips in where they are and what they do win. And you know where's publicly it's just they were concerned about this and were concerned about the use this technology. I would imagine they're very different conversations happening behind the scenes because there's a different goal behind the scenes there and you even got. There's a Chinese security law that requires while way and other companies to provide information to intelligence officials it's a law on the books today. Now certainly there's probably a whole lot of more in hard data they can back it up with but that is you know that is the fact the environment that these governments are operating. Marriott the massive hotel chain that has. Pretty much finished in agreeing that huge purchase of Starwood finally after you know what was it three years I think it took in the finally complete that integration. So they are planning on opening. 17100. More hotels over the next three years that will add between 570000. Additional rooms worldwide on the nightly beasts. There is little that surprised me as much as this story and now you can look at a lot of the data and it shows that gal occupancy rates in hotels are reaching. You know cyclical highs and perhaps there is demand for this. But it's also coming at a time where the popularity of vacation rentals is growing in densely. The pop that popularity and availability of air being bees seems to be growing very very quickly to. What I'm curious about and its way but I still don't have. Ever been able to find any data on this. The number of people that travel and use hotel rooms for work verses for vacation. You know things like conventions is an example. You can't do a big convention use near being registered. You know even. If you're doing something where hey let's say you're commuting down to BO NR San Antonio once a month or something like that. The probably not put you up in an air B&B most likely just because the most give you eat used to look at how most corporate travel portals are created to not really built. Do that if they're not but your start I start to hear a little bit more of that from consultants and such where we'll say companies are giving a little bit more freedom because they prefer to stay in there been decades feels a little bit more like home if you're going down to. You know Georgia every week from New York to go work consulting project every single week for five months that the employees prefer stay there. By the way do you know how many hotel rooms Marriott has worldwide at the moment. Us to actually be great for so prior to the Starwood acquisition they had about 759000. Today they've got about one point three million so this still represents Uga then you say okay they're adding new almost 300000 rooms. This represents almost a 25%. Exchange in a period of the three years. I'm gonna have played. Devil's advocate my own opinion that just came up with about the European expansion. On the other hand you do have a lot of cities crack down on the Indian maybe Mary god is expecting more that it's very difficult operating derby could be in New York City conference. The other thing that I I look at from a hotel perspective is there a number of areas that because of how they've been. Just our. Necessarily. Capable of providing the same level or B and b.'s that you get from a hotel. You know you'll get some of these resort areas that there's no space for your being treason you know it's just it's all zone from being you know you. 8101215. Story of corporate hotels. And that's what you get it showed you that plays into but it in his interest in you know we've humid we've heard all this talk. Stated their B&Bs of staying there being be amusing BR BO this and that putt this cup or still as comfortable opening 25% more rooms. I daddy's huge when it's all said and done that is just absolutely huge. Quick look at markets as we head towards the bottom of the hour now. I folks this is Mike Armstrong and I'm joined state by estate planning attorney top lot ski with your financial exchange quick tip of the day. Today were talking about the top state planning mistakes that you need to avoid you know Todd so many people create their state plan but they then failed to fund it. Explain why it is such a big mistake in what we mean by you know not quite funding your state yeah its it's really huge and you've got to look at it from two points of view one. You're spending money after spending money. To put together an estate plan to want to work your right and if you don't put assets in your trust that you create its not working. In two very important respects. One if you have a revoke Coble trust. And you don't fund it. Well that of course you're not avoiding probate because all the assets would be your name that's a big problem too. That language in the trust is what it's designed to help reduce estate taxes when one spouse dies. It shelters assets in and utilizes exemptions. There's nothing in there. It's not helping you do that nothing shelter so that that's not a good idea and from an irrevocable Medicaid point of view if you want it if you're in case you're concerned about doing that kind of planning can you imagine not funding those trusts. Not only do you have all the same problems that we just mentioned with a revoke able trust but one very important problem you never started your five year waiting period. And so if you create an irrevocable trust don't put assets in in five years goes by and you think your assets are protected from the nursing home. They're not. You better fund trusts it better and it's something that they you know. They see all the time folks starting these statements are not buying them public ski in the estate planning experts at Cushing and Dolan. Fluid and it was me ask yes I was here on Friday. You guys do action movie trivia Friday it didn't feel right doing it without you Jack so. Tuck came up with a pretty good time poll question yeah okay so little sign filtered lets him. Good back still good for Friday backup plan yep now that's that's good number I'm proud SaaS Amano was the answer questions. And they added I'm not even gonna get into it if so we've got a store in New York Times is that title is is trusting an antitrust actions against big tech are now palatable. And Ed I find this story really interesting because for the last. Fifteen years of pretty much since the Microsoft antitrust case. We have really seen any type of significant antitrust push against big tech companies. Elizabeth Warren mention that for the first time what about two weeks ago now. You met other B of candidates start talking about it as well. You even had to a certain extent the president talked about hate Google and FaceBook have too much power I don't like other censoring parts of the Internet and things like that. Slightly different. Tact but you know it's a case where. You're hearing more people talking about the problems with big tech now than any point I can remember in the last fifteen years yeah I think you've managed pissed off people from both sides via. A U you've managed have been really angers the libertarian groups that you know our big offensive. Privacy and you don't want information out there Democrats are pretty upset about it is some Republicans are you know upset about that some some aren't so much. I I always whenever we talk about these big tech companies and data collection I always go back to an article that recommends. Ever what I think this is an article that everyone should readers in the New York Times back in December of last year. Tell the article is your apps know where you are where you were last night and they're not keeping it secret if you haven't read it I would really encouraged to go in an interview ER altered that our region there is a fantastic. Studied that they did and really really well written just getting into you. Just how much information they're collecting and how easy it is to derive. You know. Information about individuals from that data. And so you know in terms of what we're seeing as far as any concrete push right now that there's not really anything it's making its way through the house or senate right now so. It it's not something where I think there is any. Imminent action that's necessarily going to be taken against any of these big tech companies but I do think. You know these types of ground swells that they go away over night they don't just dissipate back into you know the ether and and disappear. We don't what are the big things that we have kept saying it for Amazon for instance we kept saying well there's not really an antitrust argument because there hasn't been harm done to the consumer. When you look at FaceBook you can easily argue that. Gather has been armed on the consumer because they've screwed up on how they shared their data. And so arguably done more information is out there and being shared with people that we weren't really aware of and therefore there is harmed the consumer. Yes so this is something that again I think. Bears watching Britain and nothing happening right now but this is. If I do examined you know a few key issues for what I think you're going to be big push in the next three to five years from regulatory perspective. I think this is right up there with prescription drug reform and things along those lines though are those the two big ones I think it around them. That's that's going to be the biggest risk tech sectors that regulatory. Headline in the Wall Street Journal as aluminum makers ditched the candy business what does that mean we're gonna be drinking our Budweiser is out of you know. Plastic or paper cans in the future. Have the TV called up here's your hand here's your cold beer at a paper here is the ticket if they are baucus we you press press the carton above light you know like it comes like a little milk bottle you know like. So it's mainly the issue that we're seeing here is no I don't favor that we're going to be switching over to paper plastic bottles for her beer consumption. But it looks like in spite of the fact we've got pretty big tariffs on aluminum Cummings states that. US aluminum makers are not finding it profitable Q meek the aluminum required for the year and general and industry. So you've actually get prices for used aluminum cans have fallen about. 30%. Since last summer Steve Decker this glut of aluminum at this point it's actually developed kind of counter intuitive it's it's one of the. Easiest things for companies to recycle a you can melted and turned back into cans like very very easily. But it's just. Area US manufactures are finding it too too costly to operate those plants and are better off supplying aluminum to save the auto industry. So you you've got the you know a lot of these these companies in this sector. You know do you with promises not just in this one scrap paper and pop plastic prices have also. Collapse in the reason why there's a little bit different in that. China actually imposed higher standards on the purity of those products that were imported from the US. And believe it or not I I don't know this until recently. The US exports most most the plastic BUS recycles. It doesn't do itself. It exports actually act and it's ought to China India time and so you know you look at this and you pretty much had this this just glut of paper and plastic developed. And eat it it's at the point now where you know that the scrap dealers for those materials are sitting there saying. Well we can't make a living do we get we get too much. The stuff now and not worth that are not worth their time now. SP 500 CEOs are seen in. Mores of their paycheck that's awfully nice for them and median compensation. Reaching twelve point four million dollars and when he team so million dollars a month is the going rate for an S&P 500 CEO right now there up from eleven point 7000000. And 2017 as the survey of only a 132 CEOs. But you know 132 out of 500 that's a pretty good serve so to what to put this in perspective and I'm gonna do just a little bit Matthew gesture is I'm curious about the so. Let's assume that the average CEO works. Forty hours a week Oca. What 6060. OK I'm assuming Dardenne twelve point four knowing god you better be put at least. I just wanna get an hourly rate here so we get sixty hours a week that means it's 3000 hours a year on average that's what we're looking after four AC EO. So over to a 3000 hours a year that means that the going rate for CEO is 4100 dollars an hour. So let's think about all the things that you and I and every else does on a daily basis that isn't worth their time the average. Person if you if you look at median wages in the United States. They come to about that much a month. So the the average CEO in the United States in the S&P 500. Is making about as much as an hour as the average worker makes a month. In were wondering why people feel that they're not getting paid their fair share. Like it's. You got when you put it in those terms it is a little ridiculous number I'm not saying these people aren't worth their money because again I haven't looked at all 132 BBC used to see the job they're doing. You see it was hard OK it's like you're responsible for decisions that have. Consequences be yawned what most of us if he balanced candidate under thanks so I'm not saying that you need to be paying. You know CEO who's a hundred grand a year or something like that. But when you're getting paid as much in a month is is much an hour's most people making a month. You can see what do you think creeps up among employees ever remember that rule that was passed that they need to start disclosing. And CEO pay vs average hourly vs average pay for an non executive employees did that ever get rolled out to Beckett go back. You know I don't know man has an engine went out of I would have liked to have my hands and acted like I can't remember. And part of me wonders about this you know. We were talking last segment about how you've seen both a consolidation. In companies as well as. You know some companies being taken private I wonder how much that plays in here as well where. You know fewer CEO of the company. That is significantly smaller do you still command the same salary. Of the CEO of you know company if you're if you're company like a argue look look at the CVS and Aetna situation here. If you're the CEO of that combined company. The pro am pretty good case he should be getting paid more than just the CEO of CVS jagr complex job so. I look at this I wonder all the consolidation is kind of contributed to this is well and in a way. And if that plays in because again if the average CEO is making 4100. Dollars an hour. It's something that's a little bit out of whack when he takes the average worker to a month are now. Just a lot pitfalls to this way of doing it but I would like to see CEO pay tied a lot more to performance of the company. Ten years from now rather than. Current quarter next year and last month today if you can say hey your PA is really going to be based on the long term success of this company. That's a pretty powerful motivation it's good. Great way to deal with like all employees though. You know like you think about in EU where she could and a week here with all employees but. You know instead of just saying hey fix our epic eight incentivize employees of the if the company does better they do better like. Well you know businesses that are able to tie. Employee compensation to the long term success there isn't an issue shares that do not best for tenure. And so. Now also if you're doing like a ten years schedule or something like that. You do wonder about something like portability you know it can leave your job and still get paid out those shares on the back in for those years like. It creates more questions than answers I get that yeah theory it's a nice. Nice way to do things.
