This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. A couple of hours ago we got a report from eating cookies as it relates to job creation. The workforce. Progress we're making we also got data as it relates to international trade him old trade deficit. And then finally we're talk about GC and their stock today down 4%. Hi everybody it's Berrian truck with you here. It's a Wednesday morning chuck and the ADP report actually beat expectations as I understand a couple thousand jobs. Coming in a touch stronger than nine expected that 183000. Jobs created compared to expectations. Of a 175000. So. Yeah pretty much within a rounding error some pretty much right on the money there. Continues to show good job growth in the United States not really any change from. Previous months or anything along those lines and so at at this point the employment picture. Continues to be pretty robust. Based on all the data that we have out there for the United States. And Friday will we get a big cat BLS report. We do get the yeah we get the unemployment report from the BLS coming out Friday. That's expected to show while payroll growth pretty much right in this range can 175185. Is is the middle range of what we are expecting to see. And so be it it seems like at this point. You know were were pretty consistently in that high hundreds to low two hundreds as far as job creation goes. You know we had that spike up last month where the headline number came in at near 304000. To some of the underlying data you'll daddy said. Okay doesn't quite match up but there were were pretty consistently doing about 200000 jobs a month which is a really good number. Now especially at this point in an economic growth cycle. I didn't see anything as it relates to wages in the GDP report we have to wait til Friday's report to find out if there's a wage growth yet we do it's it's expected to show what hourly earnings growth somewhere in the range of point 3% that's what the consensus estimates are currently at. So somewhere in that ballpark is what we're expecting to see. And you that would be after a week or month but you know the trend over the last year has been towards higher wage growth in so I would expect that to continue. No idea at this point I think it's fair to treat the January number for wages. As an aberration rather than as a new trend just because it's only one data point to this. The the president has been. Adamant about his desire to at liberty to trade deficit but the trade deficit keeps getting worse as an effect under his watch. See he did trade deficit that the United States has with the rest of the world has gotten considerably worse. Despite his proudest protestations. Yeah I mean it's it's something that really isn't in his control 100%. And the reason why is if you look at it. One of the biggest you know changes are one of the biggest influencers on the the the trade deficit happens to be the strength of the US dollar which in the last year. Has increased about. 78%. Compared to what you know where was previously viewed the dollar compared to. You know basket of world currencies it's up about 8% over the last year. And what that means that it's going to be easier for you'd import and export if that's the case. The better. I market day the day trade deficit. Like there's a lot of people who like to treat deficit here that means you're getting more goods and services because your currency is so strong. A picnic I wonder if his. I wonder if he's really truthful in his desire to eliminate trade deficit because. In its its site when you travel to a foreign country. If you have a real strong currency you enjoy your trip going to go to Mexico he go to Vietnam greatly our currency compare in those countries. Goes along way. I'm not sure your be your better off having an equal trade again the all equal what is equal trade. The inducted for your well I think it depend. Depends on who you're talking about enough and on what that person does okay. When you talk about hey it's great that you can go to Mexico or you can go to Indonesia or you can go to Vietnam in your dollar goes further. That's all well and good but the person working at Wal-Mart for twelve bucks now or isn't going to Vietnam. Bit of the day or they got it works at a manufacturing facility in. Kansas well together works in manufacturing facility in Kansas likely does have his job anymore. You know so. If you look at it that the biggest beneficiaries. Of the way that the system is currently set up where the US runs large trade deficits. Finances them largely through selling debt to countries that take those dollar surpluses. In and effectively recycle the dollars back to the US. It's anyone who has any type of financial assets or anything along those lines tend to benefit so the you can understand why it's been a really good for the upper class over the last you know 3040 years to have the system that we do. The downside of consistently running such big trade deficits. Is that. Instead of manufacturing. Goods here and having higher paying manufacturing jobs at home. You've effectively offshore of those and so it tends to hurting kind of add to the disparity that we've seen. For me wealth and income standpoint and so what trade deficits. You can't get rid of them with the way that the US is currently structured you can't in the reason why is what saves were too good. Right things are too good here one no that's not the point I was going to make. So let's say that you get rid of the trade deficit right now in you're no longer buying a whole bunch of goods from China Vietnam Indonesia. You you're you're not buying a whole bunch of goods for any worry your pretty much making you you still have imports and exports but it's neutral. That means that you do not have dollars flowing out of the country correct. And a net basis which also means then that you don't have countries with a surplus of dollars trying to figure out where the heck to they invest those dollars. Which means they can't buy US treasuries anymore to finance the deficit the we have. When that's no longer the case it means the US has to self finance its deficit which by the way is kind of happening now. And this is why I think when you look at it this dollar strength is going to end up being transitory when it's all said and done. Sees it could dollar gets weaker and inflation goes up is that the equation I think it has studio the only two ways that you resolve this system with the way things are currently trending. Is either with a dollar weakening and inflation going up. Or you're going to have CJ Powell become the second coming of Paul Volcker and raise rates significantly in order to maintain a dollar strength and get capital flows coming back. And give to echo a rather famous quote. Jay Powell was no Paul Walker. Now. Are the sort of a GE their stock tumbled yesterday it's down again today. 3%. You know they they brought in this new CEO. Larry Cole who has a good reputation I think he was it in her. Before and he sat on the board for maybe six months before they were fired Flannery and brought this day in. And it kind of reminds me Flannery you're remember. When Flannery came in it was you know the stock went up for awhile because so get this new CEO is gonna fix everything. And then it crashed. Now we had GE stock go up to what maybe eleven or so and now it's back in the nines. I. Yep and the more I read his material. I I wonder if GE is even in existence. In five years it seems like the only way to survive is by dis assembling the company. And and there are you have to sell off your good stuff because nobody wants to buy bad stuff. It in here's the interesting thing is in look I know that you were very critical Flannery of you know from a pretty early time and I think that proved to be right I was critical of him eventually. But given what we're seeing from coal at this point the big thing that came out yesterday. Is that cope was here's part of this it is seminar with that that that to support on. To talk about GE and he came out and he said that GE's industrial free cash flow is going to be negative. Getting clued GE capital in particular they've got this huge aviation finance arm. That is a mixup like forty billion dollars of the business that they're saying hated that might not be much about you here actually. It's very possible that in and look this is the kind of thing where you know a week ago. Ever was saying hey you know we're we're seeing called make moves to sell off some of GE healthcare is good assets and yet things are on the up and up and everything's great. It's very possible that GD. That the that the tornado in war pool of sucked. In that company is just so deep that they they would've just built such a bad company over the last 25 years that they might not be able to get out of it. And don't like you sit 25 years because this is not something occur. Immelt made some terrible acquisitions but I believe this is gonna go back to Jack Welch's error. And Wendy got in that long term care business it that long term care business they keep throwing literally billions of dollars that every year. Yeah I mean that that the long term care business is a bad one but then you also have if you look at you know GE's. Like some of acquisitions that they've made in that it's out of giving example like look at some of these these acquisitions that they made. And in just like the timing of them and how everything ended up playing out. So in 2016. GE decided that they were going to combined G oil and Baker Hughes a thirty billion dollar deal to me that doesn't look like buying at the peak at this point. In desolate. You have a case here's another health care deal digit health care they've lost picture here's another one that's gonna look pretty bad. You you have a case where GE sold off NBC universal. Bakken 2013. For sixteen billion dollars to Comcast. Given that given the content wars that are going on right now in in particular lake some of the things that they doesn't look like a particularly good move at this point. You know you continue to kinda go through some of this other stuff. That they did and it's just eat it seemed like Immelt was always buying at the peak in selling it below. And I certainly think that this started with Jack Welch kind of at the tail end with that long term care business and some of the just the financial as the Asian of that company. But or GE capital was all Jack's idea okay yeah that that's how you doctors here right your earnings reports for year but the problem is that you know Immelt was there for fifteen years or whatever was. And it's. Didn't clean up either this is what we've been at a terrorist is no oversight to make sure that things were kind of being done the right way and it may be too late for GE at this point it's you know to use it to assist still thinks it's a six dollar stock. He does and then you know you know he's someone who a lot of people when he was initially making some of the bearish calls on GE. Or intelligence that. Guys as GE you know it's what he was all right and out. And he was spot on now he called it a six dollar stock chuck straighten it there yep. And and probably a lot of people laughed him out of the room and he's kind of the one who's laughing right now at the collapse like a he wants the company to fail I just think he looks at it objectively and says hey there's a big pile socked here what do we do with that. But you know how those guys are an analyst straight ticket to a really good analyst is like a fairy in political engineer rated second actuary. V you know that that all they do is crunch the numbers. They don't take personality and to effect that I. Wanna SharePoint with few and then get your opinion. Six days before the current ten year bull market but this S&P 500 that began on March 10 2009. 70%. Of stock investors surveyed where bearish. We're talking about SBA loans you know we hear a lot about SBA loans small business loans Jack. But I don't think people really understand. And the programs that are available power very helpful so we Europe preferred as you wonder what that means is that. We can quickly make decisions and under rates small business loans in house. And it can be used for right purposes for small business owners give us an example. Well one example that recently happened was there was a restaurant and he urged that was growing very rapidly they are always full occupancy. And the space next order then became available. So they wanted to. Take on that space needs capital to sort build out. The rest Ron. And you know was about a 300000 dollar loan. About it how many years did have to pay it back typically these types of loans vary anywhere between five to ten years lots of time. So you know we were able to quickly make that. So when things were really bad in march of 200970%. Of investors were bearish. Today when things are really good only 20%. Of investors are bearish. That to meet chuck is a recipe for disaster because it tells me that people investors are becoming complacent. Yet if it's the the classic case of recent he bias where you know people and investors think that pay what's happened most recently is likely going to continue as opposed to OG that other thing that happened awhile back might come back at some point. And so you you've seen this bit this divergence in. The market in the economy over the last few months in that you have an economy in particular you know when we thought we give the world I think more than the United States. But even in the United States you have an economy that is slowing at this point in terms of its growth rate. Named to markets over the last couple months have rallied despite the fact that you've had this slowing going on in eventually. That has to resolve itself if it it has to resolve itself and one of two ways either eight economic growth in corporate earnings pick up to the point. Where hey this market can you know continue on. Beat OK you have the market say gee the economy isn't is strengthening and eventually the market does come down Morsi. You have that start to happen and then you get interventions from governments to try to keep markets afloat that's on your third option you know that they can happen there. And so this when you have a market that is going up not based on the strength of its underlying companies and expanding earnings growth but based on expanding multiples higher valuations. Yeah I find these to be the most challenging markets to try to navigate because. You know that there's people typically phoned to camps on the one is on this market's going up forever on the pile in the or it's hate this market's going down I don't want to do anything. You know those kind of the two camps but you know everyone's kind of sit there in the middle I think a lot of times sane. G like Ed I'd want to participate but I don't wanna be there when the downside happens and that's kind of the most dangerous place to be is trying to time you know the downside there. In it's it's the single toughest impulse to try to avoid in markets which is. Electing gated and they get out before it gets bad. Do you no good luck that helped us you know. Well the according to our audience thus far. 16% of our audiences bearish as early it's the stock market today in 83%. Are not there now it's early in those poll results could change. You can participate in the poll. By visiting our website at mutual exchange showed dot com whole slew of stories as a relates to Amazon. One that I saw this morning I don't know if you caught this or not. Of course back Cuomo is. The governor of New York is trying to to Amazon to reconsider Long Island City. Yes he is and enter cope Andrew Cuomo over the last couple weeks he put together the whole letter kind of just bashing just about every New York State rep that win against. This Amazon deal and then has been made me very public campaign. I'm New York radio stations trying to. Get Amazon back in the fold that this ends and so he's someone who you know very clearly is not happy about the fact. That Amazon neo ended up pulling out of this deal here. I've mentioned what when this happened to this was stolen goes is now two weeks maybe three a little long area somewhere in that ballpark. And I found it fascinating just nothing good or bad but it. Winners the last time we ever had a CD. Reject the company bringing jobs there especially high paying jobs like. I am trying to rack my brain I can't remember something like this happening. Any time in recent history and that to me suggests that there's something big there's a sea change that's happening in terms of how people are viewing this. That all companies are going to have to reckon with. And I think it means that there likely going to seek cost going up is as cities start to look at companies and want them to be good citizens opposed to just bringing jobs. It's something where I think companies are going to have to do a whole lot more work. Working with cities and trying to figure out how to integrate with them appropriately as opposed to showing up and saying hey we've got jobs. Give us what we want so I think it is a very different. Environment to date for corporations even than a year to go to be honest. But don't yet the sense that almost going back on his knees thanking them to move back to New York. And recommit to New York he is but what's it like what a wise Amazon want to wait. What what's changed I guess is is the U what what's changed for rams on. Well I don't know he AB and yet there are such a backlash. Even the people now the Democrats who were. Rallying against him. Seemed to be backing off at their position I see. In an I think that Amazon by walking away actually gave themselves a chance to completely reset the narrative in the conversation on this in that if M. It was like to portray both it in the city now is a hero if they want all items on us do is say hey we're coming we're not taking money and war invest in the community. Yeah I mean you've got sell off that's moving on right now was this the biggest sectors in negative territory energy down now with the surgeon US crude stockpiles those stockpiles up by seven point one million barrels. That is fueling lower oil prices now that are filtering through to other energy stocks of the moments oil down to 5555. Still pretty comfortably in that mid fifty dollar range. But you do this all happening across the energy sector. On the positive side of the ledger. A couple companies Qualcomm Activision Blizzard and Dow DuPont among the biggest winners in the S&P. We don't really with any huge moves say those companies up anywhere between about one and a half in two and a half percent. At the moment taking a quick look at the ten year treasury little bit of money moving in that direction that the ten year down to two point six nines or back below two point seven. Where it's kind of been hanging out for the last couple weeks now. And it looks like gold couldn't hold onto that thirteen hundred dollar price it's down 1286. Yet down to 1286 year in a lot of that has to do with if you just take a look at we have dollar strength over the last. Really last week in particular non you've had a big move into the US dollar with the picking up about one and a half percent over the last five days trading. And that corresponds pretty directly with the the weakness that you've seen in gold. Over the short term here. To see Carlos cone got out of jail a damn happy form. Now he had snuck out till. Well she's outfit they put on I did definitely pretty much had it it's very reminiscent of you remember when the the first time that Theo Epstein left the Red Sox need to do we even a gorilla suit from Fenway. It's it's it's reminiscent of that well to do. Well. It. The me he still under basically house arrest that means yet out of jail but all it does is means he's moving into an apartment can be core hole. Lose surveyed did in and him leave. And people still like if you talk to people in the legal community they're absolutely aghast at the witness has been handled. Yeah I mean who accused he's been held pretty much without trial and without bail for three months. It can't talk to lawyers have just been it's really great companies yet. I had no idea that Japanese society function in that fashion and look at their country -- they want. It you know to. Did who were CEO back to Japan under false pretense is that immediately placed under arrest. And it it just. Reminds you submit you expect out of the Nazis or the Chinese. Not Japan. Who mock. Chinese hackers speaking at the Chinese. Chinese hackers target universities in pursuit of merit time military secrets. The total Lotta this tacking right appear in Massachusetts they're going after MIT. And the date it think it comes at a whistles. Yeah and it is not particularly surprising mean that these the kinds of people that historically. Would have been targeted for espionage previously if you appear kind of gone back through the Cold War by Russian intelligence assets in a lot of cases. In the reason why is that you tend to see a lot of university professors in certain fields. Give cooperating and being kind of heavily involved in a lot of these. Defense Department programs. That are Pino on on the cutting edge as far as the of government military technology so. Yeah the end there working on I just you know if the stuff they're working on down at Woods Hole has to do with these supersonic. Submarines and and missile defense systems which is units are intellectual property. And you know the the only thing you hope. Is that we're doing the same thing to them right AT you know I've I'm told by. You know the guys that work in in. The intelligence agencies facing yet they do to us but don't worry we're doing it to them as well and and there's also a lot of misinformation that gets fed to the Chinese. Non pitchers espionage and has been going on for. I guess hundreds of yours and that's. That means this this isn't integral part of state craft as you have espionage trying to figure out what you or me you know competitors are up two and in effectively. Trying to you know at the same time feed them bad information about would Europe to its minute that this goes back thousands of years you know this this is. That this is at the core of espionage is trying to figure out hey how do we get put ourselves in a better position compared to other countries other states and other cities. Our enemies right in Heidi do you still there intellectual property. So picked up I guess it's incumbent upon us to protect aren't in intellectual property. Yeah I mean look at this isn't even an intellectual property feeling that this is I mean if it's a case where. Did that this is espionage is not it's not an intellectual property issue this is this is very different from what China does when it comes to companies that operate in China. This is espionage is as stealing our information Jeb Bush and in this is something that any country worth its salt tries to do. Yeah I hate that thing is like you read about it in the Wall Street Journal see you soon it's just the Chinese doing it to us. And they news recchi sit back except what were probably doing it to them active so you'd imagine that the CIA doesn't just sit there and say oh yeah we were not gonna do anything. I hope not. FDA giving approval. To a new drug in order to combat depression. Sounds like there's quite a bit of optimism they grew depression is rampant like I had no idea that so many people world on the different type of that depression medications. It's a large portion of our population take something for depression. Had a mean I guess. The code name office. Well this is Sosa Kevin mean if you're familiar with that it originally came to. Kindle waiting came to use as an animal tranquilizer because it it's incredibly strong actually. And it's it's got to the point where you know it's been used for sedation in some cases and so forth but the problem with Ted means you use in humans. Is that a it's it's incredibly you know addictive as far as. You know it it's used as a substance in. You know it's something that quite literally just it it knocks he wound I mean it is it something that really just you know apparently puts you back on an ugly but pretty strongly. And you know makes you. Pretty much not not really do anything while you were on it. They've been doing some studies over the last five to ten years. And whether academy can be used to treat depression that has responded to other types of treatment so a traditional. Anti depressants therapies things along those lines. And what they found is in some cases. This can give help to ease. Significant symptoms of depression is not the people up you know mild case or something like that. But this is for people who have severe depression that does not respond other treatment. And an obvious must have some effective use because they would approve the so that it it does have aid does appear to you know work in a lot of these cases. But the you know there are significant potential downsides is that this is also going to come with one of the FDA's strongest warnings at its that would be out of the box warnings that are on the the the labels never thing. And so you know this is going to be highly regulated in terms of who was able to get access to this just because can mean that the potential for abuse. Is is significant. And they're trying to at least create the appearance that this is going to fall into. You know the wrong person's hands. I think that's when when we look at this it certainly is something that's. I think bears watching in terms of where it goes simply because. We've seen before that it's you know drugs that are you know marketed initially for one type of views. Eventually kind of spill out and start to be used more widely the most recent example being OP words where it was supposed to be freed a really severe pain and next thing you know. You know the 2000 season being handed out left right and center. And you just worry about the same type of thing happening with something like this especially given given how many people have depression. You know you you worry about are we just finding a new way to get people hooked on to something and so that that's one of the major worries that's out there. But certainly. The data that I've seen is pretty promising as far as you know treating people otherwise couldn't be treated but you just worry about the potential for abuse was something like. This enables Byrd to right yes that's ordered. To us postal worker very fast. End and be effective but we'll see this could be something in three years where they poll places. You yet a rash of suicides are something goes wrong. You know it's not be on the FDA's say yeah we proved it but now we're gonna restricted because it's not working without. It's our daily poll question had financial exchange showed Doug John. Vote your conscience there heard just vote go to financial exchange oh does come in castaway. Well there's a perspective. That the stock market's doing well while the economy is sliding into recession not sure I agree with the fact that were going into recession statement. There were going into recession but. It's pretty hard to argue that things aren't slowed down a little bit and stocks continue to lob. Yeah I mean you you you certainly have seen and I I keep that. Track of of kind of data that either is yeah kind of beating expectations. Worsening compared to expectations. And for the last three months it's been somewhat overwhelmed by a worsening data compared to be you know data that's been in stronger than anticipated. Pretty much the the place that we've seen data be better than anticipated. Jobs numbers of continue to be good. The Fed has continued to be really accommodative. In the last two months actually you've seen a little bit of of recovery. In US manufacturing Steve had a little bit of help there. But when you talk about the things that have been negative for the last. You know couple months in particular. Any data coming out of China or Europe. Looks like. Garbage is being nice to be completely honestly US data out of your for Europe's exports and manufacturing. It's the worst that we've seen since the financial crisis like you Europe is is borderline turning into a black hole at this point. But you don't you blame a lot of that on here in their structure and mean I I rocket know the structure you don't what what's changing structure in the last three months. Well not the last three months I think it's an accumulation of what they've done over the last thirty years chuck you know the that if you look at the social welfare programs in Europe. It's really hard to be incentives to go to work every day but why is that hurting manufacturing in December. Because that he act I think it's taken this long. To catch upbeat the I I think people are just saying we are look look at that yellow jacket protests at work during it France and he is just. I don't know it just it seems you're when I look at Europe and and we several problems here in the United States don't get me wrong but I look at Europe and I look at. Kind of a socialist structure and I think it's kind of falling in around me if he do you disagree. Well I don't disagree they have a socialist structure but they've had when as you mentioned for thirty years. Why is it causing problems in December 2018. Why didn't cause him in November 1 cosmonaut him what I think it would. The thing I always ask is why now because if you're not asking that question then could you we've come up with anything I mean look there's a full moonlight and could may have just about anything look like. It's causing something so the question that come back to his. Why are in beyond Europe let's talk about China. Because if if the data coming out of Europe looks bad. The data out of China is a whole different brand of waffled just because China has been the one area of the world. There has been growing pretty rapidly. Over the last decade. And if you look at the data coming out Chinese had three months in a row now of declining auto sales that has not happened in like fifteen years. So what people are saying to the bloom is off the rose in China and they're gonna slow down to 2% account. But what I'd but does that kind of get at look if if you're talking about you know the stock market compared to the economy. It's the stock market in the last two months is telling you everything's fine everyone already gone it's gonna be okay. I think what you may have is a stock market that stagnate for a few years. You know it was down yes last year Rui what do we finish the year down into when he team by S&P was often think about six or 7%. Wouldn't surprise me if that was you know if it was down again this year to a 3% in in down again the year after 23% I don't see. The impetus this seems like the Fed has our back in terms of stopping 50% decline. But it wouldn't surprise me if stock price is just stagnate because. If you look at profit growth in earnings track there's nothing there on the horizon where I say. Geez can be tremendous amount of demand and earnings are gonna increase by 50% I I think earnings are. Earnings might be flat this year habit beat down. Yeah I mean I know I was looking actually yesterday at the the earnings estimates on a quarter by quarter basis. Q1 is estimated to see a decline in earnings of 3.2 percent now. Q2 point 3% growth Q3 one point 9% growth. And Q4 eight point five so right now analysts are pricing in about four point 1%. Earnings growth over the course of the year. I tend to think that there on the high side there and hears him. When it comes to the Fed. We've talked about how they're accommodative and how that's helped markets to this point. Part of the last two recessions the Fed did similar signaling in they still were able to stop markets from dipping. Because fed policy. Is not something that has an immediate effect it's if the Fed goes out and cuts interest rates. It doesn't create a job today does increase earnings today and so I look at it. The market's move. And the day to day basis and really short time frames where is fed policy works more over intermediate let time frames to three years can be effective so. I still think they're short term risk out there and the bigger the divergence and gets the nastier tends to look when everything you know finally. Blasts. You know chuck we started off the show with our survey in our poll question which is you know are you bearish on the stock market today. 39% of our audience is bearish where is with the general investing public it's only 20%. So I I think. Our audience as well informed audience I I think beer. The eighteenth it is I think you should be the higher than 30% but he is always healthy to have a bearish attitude towards stocks. That way you make much more selective buying. Opportunities and decisions. If that this right now again the type of market that worry in. If it's one of the toughest for me personally to make decisions and because. It's not a market that is a rally based on fundamentals are growth story. It's a rally that is based on hope and you don't quite know when hope breaks you know it's went went hope breaks it's something happened suddenly it's not something where. You know you say oh GM feel a little as hopeful today than the day before it's eventually it's just a fear overwhelmed greed and everyone kind of moves that fierce side of the board. It's it's a really tough market it to get a read on so. These I think that it they present really good opportunities for investors but they're also really really dangerous as well. Seven anyone writes Berry I believe the market will be decent as long as a Republican is in the White House is socialism takes over in 22 when he it's all gone. A lot of people took that perspective when Obama went into office and boy and never made more money than it did during the years that he was in office. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange we're talking today about planning for retirement it's a big thing that you need to plan for and really. Is the kind of thing that you only want to do once you don't want to have to un retire. Mike one of the things that people have to sort through or be discussing a you know what's the aged. Fringe between myself and my spouse. Our am I retiring her we both retiring we're already retired. If your spouse is pulling in a whole bunch of income while you're retired it might not make sense to pull your Social Security right away so consider a bunch of factors that a big one is also life expectancy and that. Definitely comes into play with sort of security. In addition to Social Security another item that people have when it comes to retirement pensions. Is that the same type of conversation and same type the calculus the people need to go through. Certainly there's a lot of calculus there but there's oftentimes even beer one with pensions and there'll be more rare today which is. What sort of survivor benefit to a and the option to take a my pension. It's not always clear cuts and I would caution here really think about it especially if you have a younger spouse that might be survivor here. An 8:15 this morning we learned from HTTP bit. The private sector created a few thousand more jobs than we anticipated. And then moments after that we've learned that the trade deficit expanded. I'm not sure that's such a bad thing but on the consumer and if you work in manufacturing you don't like having a large trade deficit hi everybody it's buried truck with you here. It's a Wednesday morning and chuck the ADP number. Better than expected though there was an indication or something built into that report indicating that job growth might start to slowdown. Yeah I mean I think in general with you know with with where the economy sits at this point with the number of people that you have employed. In the skills that companies are looking for I think it's at some point is get to a pace where will you just can't keep it up now because the economy's necessarily bad. But just because look there's only so many qualified capable people. That you can hire when it's all said and done now this has been a labor force. That is had more slack in it than just about anyone thought I mean it is there were people to three years ago saying hey we're getting close to four point were getting close to full employment. Guess what. You ward close to full employment so eight take all of that with a grain of salt as far as I don't think we understand appoint her to markets as well I think we do. Rip it to that point chuck. How does one know because when I was in school studying economics I was taught. You know about 55 and a half percent and was full employment then they said no no berries to foreigner percent. Like what is it is it good it does he says it it's a made up construct. There's no such thing really is full employment. You know it's it's it it's a term vanity economists like to talk about. Just because it's something that you know helps them kind of build theories on how labor markets work but there's there's no fixed number for what form point user is. Couldn't you use wage growth as an indicator but let's say your wage growth was I don't know that our use an outrageous number let's say it was. You know steadily growing at 56%. And inflation's running at two assuming the Fed's doing their job right so yet the Fed running inflation to. And wage growth at five with that indicate to you would you then look at that number and say oh that yet that's full employment. Not necessarily. No I mean it's it it's not a number that's real and that's that that's the thing that I continue to come back to his you know full employment it's it's not something where yes this number is the number for four employment or yes this one. It's it's a construct in its construct a helpless with theories that we have unemployment but. If it's not something that's real and I think the fact that over the last few years we've seen so many BO people saying all our full employment or four. Got guys they. That enough is enough Lleyton yet we're not only do we we haven't been there you know it's. We have to continue to do the same thing over and over in the face of overwhelming evidence that you're wrong. It's what people usually call insanity but no one wants to call economists insane and fortunately. Well action is a few of them that are so if it maybe if the issue fits. Let's take a look at our poll question today. Six years before the start of the current tenure bull market the S&P 500 that began on March 10 of 200970%. Of stock investors. Surveys at that point where bearish mean. Only in and I can understand that march of 2009 I remember like it was yesterday. Today the world is coming to an end was a doubt trading at 6500 track. Yeah I think we get down like that 656600. Ranges it's it's it's hard to believe that we are there just ten years ago. And the instant he was about six or 700. That's what's really haven't 707 point you're something like yeah I mean the wheels come and often and things are bad so everybody was bears 70% of investors stock investors were bearish. 20% of stock investors today when the markets four times as expensive or three times as expensive as it was back in ten years ago. Only 20% of stock investors are bare that to me is a warning to. Because if you look at how many investors were bearish. In march of 2007 before the crash started right. How many people were fair share of it you hate you we tend to be. Optimistic we biased stock thinking on gonna buy shares of that stock because I think it's gonna go right that makes you bullish investor. Well today not many people are bearish that makes me on a personal level a little bit nervous. Our poll question today has to do that very topic. Are you bearish on the stock market today and 39%. Deprived us. That 39%. Of our poll participants thus far are in fact bear for on stocks I think that's good it. I tactic that demonstrates Euro well informed audience but. Participate the poll financial exchange showed dot com if you differ with my opinion. Send me text number a text message excuse me my text number is 63566. Former executives. At ins this. Heed doctors' belief sees this the EU we need to send a lot of people to jail this. Yes a pretty much what what was happening here. Is that you had these these speakers that were supposedly scheduled. To meet with doctors to promote. Certain drugs the drug in this case being. A drug called subsidence which wasn't under the tongue fentanyl spray and by the way fentanyl you're not familiar with that is an incredibly potent OP. And so what does it ended up happening here. Is that. These speaking engagements it it it turns out weren't necessarily happening in a lot of cases weren't happening in doctors were receiving fees from the company forty speaking engagements despite the fact. That they weren't actually. Current. And end its. You how do you think this sense of I mean how would it how many people died from OP joint. Overdoses like. Thousands and thousands to elect I think have been last summer may have seamless like 60000. Yeah I mean crazy number is eight you've got huge numbers in in terms of I think it's like the third or 44 most common. Cause of death in the country now on a given year it's easy to like that top five top ten I can't remember exactly where it is. You know this is the kind of thing where. I would imagine that in in in the article it talks about potentially this being eight you know a Rico case in terms of you know you could turn this beyond just the the people who were involved and give go after it company as a whole and all the individuals. That antithesis. I mean in in theory. You could probably go after it is but here's what's really interesting is Massachusetts right now. Has the first he's going on that is going after a doctor and I think they're trying to doctor is is it for murder for manslaughter. Before in Obey your description that was it appropriate. You know if you get to the point where you start to see convictions on those types of things. And late. Even if you don't change behavior be it may really change behavior finally when it comes to Opie were prescriptions and things like that. Turkey the you know oh UH actually have a place Q you have. You know really tough surgery like a guy give an example. If your were blown out your Achilles. Partially but not fully. If you ever have that sewn up I guess it's just. Very very painful and it's not uncommon to prescribe OP export. I've got clients and major back problems that are are taking the open it and it it's it's likes it. The problem is these doctors were given out like candy and it and it's highly addictive. And we're overdose. Yemen give an example I had my appendix out seven years ago they gave me a whole big thing of per cents or something like that gap and it's you know I took one of them was like that particularly. It was all loopy and everything I didn't like it personally so I have like no not doing any more of those. And I was back on my feet and a couple days but it's you sit there and go and what did the incision that I had was maybe eventually do is is a tiny little thing and on the other giving you all these OP or it's the kind of like. We get out the how many did they give in the bottle remember and I I can't say I can't accurately say it was I would imagine somewhere between ten and twenty but I'm not sure. Now that whoever they get. My son twelve when he did his Achilles. And he like you he didn't like the effect in the C he was really out of it. And I think he stopped taking them after the first day in just. Get it out but in the paint is pretty severe and get in. Him he would sometimes you need them. That this is a case where some of these doctors Emmys starts and it's of these doctors to jail since some of the executives to jail and give a good long sentence. And also the behavior will change. You know the only behave you know people say maybe maybe maybe you need to be a little bit remember the way the east cook the books financial companies investment companies to cook the books. And then all of a sudden they passed a law that said if you're the CFO. Of the company and you are found cook in the culture go to jail. And all of a sudden the nobody cooks the books anymore. Yet that it's the kind of stuff that you need to do you need to be aggressive in going after this kinda stuff. Italy is reportedly going to support China's built and wrote program what does. What does this. Hold China built and wrote program let's talk about the for. Pretty much what it is so it's is known officially as the one built one road program mobile war. And they first announced it I think it was probably. Four maybe five years ago somewhere in that ballpark. And pretty much what they tried to do. Is they try to follow and infrastructure projects around the world. Largely in order to BO kind of gain influence in those errors mean and in some ways it's no different from B outcome of the Marshall plan the US did after World War II. But it's effectively saying. Hey if you have a port that you need to builder few of a damn that you need to build. Let us be the ones who provide funding and expertise in order to get that project. And that there's actually some fascinating studies that have been done on the the way to China sets a lot of the terms upon these deals where. They make them so prohibitively expensive. In building the contracts a lot of case that if the country can't pay the terms on the deal. Whatever their building effectively reverts to Chinese control and so it's almost Chinese China's way. In a lot of cases kind of backing into owning major assets for infrastructure projects in foreign countries. And if they do a lot of this in Venezuela and accountable to their face. China is not really concerned about the money. They they they don't want the money they want the gas. So I think they're willing to lose money on these projects and say yeah level finance and India on them for projecting ridiculous rates of return that won't happen. It would China wants is that they don't care about you know whether or not you know that the project is profitable. They want to own the dam in Venezuela they want to owned oil field. In Egypt they want to own the bridge in Myanmar you know that those are the wits. Rite Aid in Chile. Back in the seventies. Date there is a revolution and they nationalize all the copper mines that is so what's stopping their country from doing that with China you think Myanmar wants to go to war China. Nobody I mean it that's what it is now. You know Italy at this point is desperate to find sources of funding I guess that they also think that there that's what it comes down to his you know you look at the countries that are participating in this. EE it's it's not Canada. You know it's it's it's not Australia it's it's countries that need financing. And are trying to get. Give it any way they can so Italy. Look if the if there's one thing they need its capital at this point. And that's why I think they're turning in this direction I would be surprised if they turned back at some point once they realize what they're getting into. Yeah. Those in the wall street journal of all places where I saw this story. A surge in girls ice hockey comes as many embrace competitive. Teams sport spurning the makeup and sequence associated with figure skating. That it stinks GDP. The number of girls. And rolled in USA hockey has grown 25%. From five years ago and doubled since the year 2000 with about 61000. Girls eighteen and under. Playing in 201718. What do you make this. I think it's great and I I think it's terrific. In the the only thing I don't like is. The I I like the girls to be integrated with the ball weighs. Until they're probably don't know where when the boys puberty. Because it the week we learned a plea. It it makes for a a more competitive environment. I don't like the girls only lead at 87 or eight I think I make seven year old girl should be playing with a seven girl boy. Yeah I mean I don't know nearly enough about youth hockey to be able to kind of get into that aside I trust your judgment on it but. Daddy it is interesting that you're seeing this move I wonder how much of it is due to the fact you know. What I find interesting is that. Hockey's an expensive sport to plight you know it is it probably. I would imagine outside of maybe skiing it's probably the most expensive sport to compete and out of lake normal sports not count like horse riding and neo did. Certainly lure that it's going to be more than your soccer your baseball your basketball. Ice time is expensive I I don't know what it is now it's probably. I don't know 300 bucks an hour to and to wreak. It's ice time and the equipment you know it's he'd think about you know especially young age you gotta get new skates every year to wouldn't you know you grind of your sticks and you know your pads you eventually grow at a probably not as frequently. But it eats you know the the there's a lot of equipment where is you know basketball. On the other pair shorts on. They just Matty got a basketball about you know not grow out of that basketball or anything so. But the girls don't wanna figure skating. What does that figure skating well I I think it's to figure skating as long. You know he is your one on one with your coach if you're good rate whereas if you're a hockey team journal locker room by two other kids its fund. You know you win you lose you'd have road trip so that means you get to eat routine in the news just. It's it's a really fun environment to be on hockey team figures it out cape routine. No they take note don't know figures definitely definitely knocking the but who wits with curious about the stories of the number of girls have doubled. Since 2000 that are playing hockey. Number points and it states that actually decreased slightly but there's still on the speakers. 88 the back when when I did coach hockey. Ice hockey was the best chance your daughter had forgetting any kind of a scholarship sports. He does it date they are like fifty or sixty schools are giving out scholarships. And very few girls that were good enough to qualify for the scholarships. I think the big thing is just the last twenty years which stands out to me is the amount of exposure that women's hockey has gotten. And you know whether you talk about the Olympics or in the last three years now I think it's two different women's professional hockey leagues that are in existence now. And I think the big thing is just hey if you see someone who looks like you playing a sport on TV. Yeah especially her five year old kid. Let me put that you know I don't know like to play hockey at the only boys Campbell you can play hockey too so I think I think the exposure. Is a huge part of it too just because you say to me. They can do that I can to. They if it's good to see. BJ's Wholesale Club they went public cash is it last year they went public Indy V had been a publicly traded company. They're taken private. By private equity firm and then I think they went and did their IPO in 2018. Their stocks trading at 25 dollars today. Yeah they IPO last June and another about 10% since that IPO. You're date they've had a nice recovery along with you know most of the market to this point. And the big things that you war seeing. From them when we talk about their latest quarter. Their net income actually came down a little bit from a year ago but when you pulled out you know kind of one time items from their earnings they actually saw a outs 20% earnings growth over the last year. They did have a revenue declined that came into effect but it wasn't as steep as. People were expecting in same store sales always a key metric for any retailer up two point 9% compared expectations of two point one. They you can get delivery from BJ's I think via instant cart is is value to work them but I. And most people go into the beaches open here indicate that that's where they're getting the bulk of their customers I think so and. I know a lot of I don't have one of these big warehouse membership right now discus with just me and my wife you know there's not much yeah we really buy in bulk at this point. You know we we buy things in ball but we don't need like the bulk of the BJ's offers let me know all and give my card that's you know a thank you thank you. I appreciate. But but yes they they have a nice little quarter of the stocks actually down a little bit today after an early rise but. These little quarter for BJ's there. They do. Holes today retail sector you kind of wonder about these very hard to you know he sees some companies do and while I if you saw the story about Kohl's to see they're going to be. Renting out part of the story every every Kohl's store to planet fitness a video. I'd that's brilliant because how many people walked in and out of the planet fitness every day. Also they got a walk street store they gonna walk through polls maybe they'll buy something other go to the gym work but they have deodorant. It will make it only took a shower they replayed this and there's a reason why malls traditionally shunned gyms in it it is a big part of it has to do with the smell. Oh well that makes sense there right now malls to work show and anybody coming up will be played a little bit of trivia at the Dow's down 82 votes. Today were talking about the top state playing mistakes that you need to avoid you know Todd so many people create their state plan but they then failed to fund it. Explain why it is such a big mistake in what we mean by you know not quite funding your state yeah its it's really huge and you've got to look at it from two points of view one. You're spending money after spending money. To put together an estate plan to want it to work her write in if you don't put assets in your trust that you create its not working. In two very important respects one if you have a revoke Coble trust. And you don't fund it. Well then of course you're not avoiding probate because all the assets would be your name that's a big problem too. That language in that trust is what it's designed to help reduce estate taxes when one spouse dies. It shelters assets in and utilizes exemptions. There's nothing in there. It's not helping you do that nothing shelter so that that's not a good idea. And from an irrevocable Medicaid point of view if you want it if you're in case you're concerned about doing that kind of planning can you imagine not funding those trusts. Not only do you have all the same problems that we just mentioned with a revoke able trust but one very important problem you never started your five year waiting period. And so if you create an irrevocable trust don't put assets in in five years goes by and you think your assets are protected from the nursing home. There not. You better fund trusts you better and it's something that they you know. They see all the time folks starting these escape plans for not buying them public ski in the estate planning experts at Cushing and Dolan. Have written a brand new guide that details the top estate planning mistakes that you want to avoid you can request this brand new guy by calling 866848. 5699. That number again is 866848. 5699. It is time to play a little bit of trivia and end up for grabs is a fifty dollar. Gasoline gift card. William Howard Taft who's the 27 president of the United States. Passed away this week in the year 1930. We will be asking trivia question about president Taft. Eight years after his presidency William Howard Taft was appointed by president Harding to serve in what roles. You know the answer to that question Texas and number 63566. If you haven't participated in trivia in the past. My first name it's Barry BA are wide and 63566. And of course the answer to the question. What job did chief art what job did how. William Howard Taft. Served in when he was appointed by president heart flex 356. So the way Taft has the best mustache out of any president in US history. Teddy Roosevelt is a close second but Taft had that nice little curl at the end that just gives that extra little bit of flair. Teddy was my favorite present. Because a lot of people's favorite you know human Lincoln tend to come up more often than anyone else when we talk favor president's. And the nightly and he got to give him credit but I like and it Teddy used just outrageous. But anyway. And here's how 50000 dollars in student debt becomes nearly a 100000. Dollars well for a simple here Betsy devotion yesterday. Pointed out that. Only 25%. Of people who have student ball struck are paying principal down on the student votes the other 75%. Aren't even covering the interest payments. Yes or if you're covering the interest only at least it's a case where it prevents your bill from growing even though it doesn't. You know shrinking at all. But if you're not paying. The interest if you're not even making that payment. You're the amount of depth it's outstanding actually continues to grow and so you know it's it's a real problem the people of where. It started with you know 2030000 dollars in debt now you wind up with thirty or forty. It just continues to compound the problem and make. Worse. So if you have a 100000 dollars or 50000 dollars of student loan check. And you're not making payments on. That's got to be just crushing your credit scores. It does and and there's no way of pretty much it's it's next to impossible right now. To discharge student debt in most cases. So you're not buy a house right. If you're if if if you're carrying 50000 and it's been in forbearance. Use him by ousting. It's unlikely that you can give up probably her hurt your credit to the point where it's either. Makes it so that it's very expensive freed by the house my price you have it anyways. Or you might just not even be able to get new credit extended to you depending on how bad it is and how long it's been going on. And if your married. I guess you could qualify port on your spouse's credit. Problem. But that wouldn't lie to buy much of the house it is just to vote off one income yet you're going off of just to spouse's credit that you can't include your income in that calculations so that makes it much more. Restrictive as far as how much you be able to borrow which in some parts the country you know expensive markets like San Francisco New York Boston. Paper comes you know little bit of challenge to do so that. Down tree to us pictured us. Chevron and ExxonMobil. Are tightening their grip on fracking market Avery Chevron in particular has tremendous advantage in terms of developing our oil fields. You know what what they're doing is they are saying in particular and in western Texas in the Permian Basin which had been one of the fastest growing areas. Of oil production in the country. They are expecting to more than double their production over the next five years to 900000. Barrels of oil and gas today. That's just from Chevron. They were previously projecting they were gonna be somewhere in the low to mid six hundreds so you know Justin since their last announcement on this. They've come out and said hey we we're going to be much more bullish when it comes to oil production. Not coming out of that region and so they sit in their report that what they need is about 51 bucks a barrel to make money. Yeah that that's where they're targeting them I'm curious to see how this plays out as far as India pretty much they said look we can pay for the new spending and we can pay or continue to pay a dividend. If we get prices in that 51 a barrel range and what would an interest in on this is. You know that's in today's environments. With you know kind of the way the oil market is currently destruction curious just what that starts to look like. As China becomes a bigger buyer of oil. In the future just in terms of how that ships pricing and how that ships. You know kind of where countries are sending their will. Going forward so it's it's something that the bears watching here obviously look at addiction over and is tough and all they know more than I do about this announcing they don't. But I'm I'm curious how that number shifts depending on you know dollar strength depending on who's the biggest buyers and so forth that there's a lot that goes into that when it's all said and done. The big advantage that Chevron has from what I can see is. They bought their land decades ago he talked about so this land that Chevron loans they don't like since the thirties. They paid pennies an acre fort ballots sold for 40000 bucks an acre. But they also don't have to pay royalties because they owned the mineral rights you know back in the day jock when you bought land my uncle did this and in western Canada. He would buy farmland back in the 1930s. And you all owned the mineral rights yet now if you wanna buy land. You Arnold those mineral rights you have to pay royalties royalties to the owner of that property. Yeah a lot of times there's you know big conglomerates of big big trust that effectively get set up so that you know that the owners can get paid out for all you know it's kind of combined into one pool. In an distributed out to the owners. It's. And I I figured CIA. Chevron. Is uninteresting company to look at if you're buying stocks. Wouldn't tell you spend half an hour examining their reports. Let's talk about list you know I think it was about a week ago list announced that they're going to be a wording. Some stock. I guess the not so much stock is cash. To some of their really loyal drivers. But it sounds like a nobody's gonna get these bonuses it likely that number bound driving you have to have done is you have to have been like. Working seven days a week eighty hours a week driving in order to get the stock you have to been doing it for ten years. The other ones who have been it's going to be pretty much she would have had to been working with the lift since inception in order to get the top bonuses. In order to get the middle tier which starts at 101000 rides but is significantly lower about a thousand bucks compared to 101000. You know that's something where if you've been driving for the last three to four years you might end up qualifying there if you've been doing it full time but. I don't really have a problem with that you know it's do I do I want to be giving shares of stock in my company is someone who's working for hours a week for. Rate and I got really heat. But it's the year it was when I saw the headline on it a week because we didn't know the details brightness and wow what a generous company. At some jitters I mean they'd have to give out anything I suppose but you don't really get hurt by the way looper and less to think who pursues the same thing. Is most of these drivers when you get one of these cars. They have their list apple open and they have their per apple yeah right it's so it might be working sixty hours a week it. They might be working thirty hours a week from left to thirty hours a week for Cooper Ellis and letting my daughter putting his case. Alia you know home of the drivers that really make the money are the ones that deliver the food. If the winds that are working for like two or dash and grow but all those. That's much more lucrative apparently. And driving people interest and so. Just that far when we come back or be talking about Southwest Airlines. What it's costing Mack company millions of dollars well you know when we return. And include. Southwest Airlines has a problem it sounds like they got a labor dispute issue here tonight. They certainly do and this is. One that kind of first came really at the two public knowledge about two and two weeks ago right. Brady is a lot of before heading out on a school vacation. And they they start having to cancel whole bunch of flights just because they had this significant amount of planes that were not operationally. Worthy just because of maintenance backlogs that were happening and so what you have is this. This dispute really has been going on for years now they've been in contract negotiations went twelve. Now with their 2500 mechanics. And it's got to the point now where southwest the management is accusing the mechanics of slow playing a lot of the maintenance work. On these planes. In order to try to gain leverage in their negotiations so it saves them if they certainly get pretty ugly here for southwest now. Got to pay the man right wanted to do the job got to pay up they do have to you know in in this is again we've we've said all along labor dispute happening good economy's not bad. That's right the notes in a no what no one's ever holding out for more money you know no I was doing that back in 2009. Knowing you know what's happening here as you look at there as a company. In the in the mechanics union knows they see their sophisticated and much worse the skated that they might have been fifty years ago. But they're looking at and there's and you know your make and four dollars and 29 cents a share you're doing pretty well we want some. Write your profits or four dollars and 29 cents a share for every chair he had outstanding. Some of that's gonna come to us in if it doesn't come to us. You're not gonna make it four dollars and 29 cents a share because of those planes are caught in the air the epic what's what's those platelets those flights are canceled you can't make that money back. You might still get the money a week later two weeks later but it's not like that you've lost that money from if a flight gets canceled on March 6. Your you can't get march 6 back that day is gone. No you're you're done at that point late you're kinda caught. You know this those seats as you said you can't film again you don't a year at a big biscuits result if they just had to pay and a yeah now it can be pretty much have to I don't see where they have a choice.
