This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. It's a very unusual for the beginning of the day at least in terms of treating we're getting. Earnings reports that retailers that we. I don't know I got on the demise if you will and they turned out to be very strong. And then. We had talked to surmise that home sales were starting to slow down at some of the data we can just moments ago it's a very strong data. As a relates to new home sales hi everybody it's Berrian Christine Dunn with you here. On Tuesday morning in. I just can't make sense of all this economic data that work today Christine and. It is good news on the homes sales Frankfurt share. It was nice to see that their report was unexpected winds home sales up as you mentioned. On that report I guess was delayed because of the partial government shut down so they they released the numbers today and I guess it was after a couple of reserve revisions downward in home sales for October and November's that's why people were caught by surprise but the big numbers. It was technique they are about I don't know three point seven and they'd be expected to be actually in negative territory so they come out. In new home sales folks are so darn important because so many people work on in new home. You know when you see that house being constructed in your neighborhood. Or easy neighborhood of homes being built which is not very common in New England that you know even if he'd just sealed one offer or maybe two houses being built next to each other. So fifteen. Different people that be working on each one of those houses you're talking about the two BAC you're talking about the carpenters electricians plumbers. At a mall up. But fifteen different people that are at work on that house so it is just bodes well for the overall economy if new hole as opposed to existing home sales. Are struck existing home sales department corporal is that you need such a large existing inventory but if you get new home sales going. That acted bode well for the long term economy. I wanna talk to your boat target and Coles AU shopper either one of those storage Christine. I am Miami shopper both in fact and looks like they're earnings also. Surprised the markets in team mountain better than expected. And the company's shares have been responding as a result. They have I see target sales are up for stores that are open at least twelve months up five point 3%. And they're growing their digital sales by 25% split sounds Amazon asked. And victims I I've never shopped online at target do you use the app to it to shop online with them you see. App as much but I do shop online and you find that occasionally they have some things that I really like. And Monica discreetly run over and pick it up for my local store after buying it online on my way to an area under something it's very very convenient. But it probably is interesting is science you know they've been open hand this thing called target clots and that's basically their version of the Amazon. Where they invite select specialty brands and other national retailers to sell on their web safe via its it's like third party market place. So they've been competing directly with Amazon in that way and I think that that's benefiting them. How will. How can they do that Bailey cave from pricing standpoint I would think it. Amazon would have. Better delivery infrastructure. In and you know in better pricing on goods what looks like they're passing on the shipping costs and and some of those logistical things on the southern third parties what they're doing is providing that platform. Which allows companies and additional pleased to sell you won't like does this too I mean you can buy some bits aren't necessarily available through Wal-Mart dot com that are. Available through third parties on Wal-Mart com. Bedard Bedard left it it's. Unity look at retailers like this week as yet another one guy is cold reported pretty good earnings to exceed their stocks below 5% this morning. Be they and then you look at another retailer. Like yours I don't know maybe your JC Penney worry your Macy's my guess they are not growing at all city you've got. Some companies. Like here colds in your target that seemed to have figured out the Amazon formula. And then you have other companies that are just mired in in to see him going in the wrong direction. Yeah and I think say it seems to be if it's some of these discounts or so first of all the discount stores. Have always been giving I mean I would argue for the last 1520 years have been giving this traditional department stores around for their money. Because the quality of their goods is quite high but the prices are generally lower so you know target is is that quota hire and discount store but you know the quality of the things you'd get it Coles or Wal-Mart is still pretty decent. And so that's its survival what you see in department stores. But you know you also see them investing in new partnerships in new storm models on and in on line they've been aggressively gone after the online market and the tradition department sources haven't figured out that form really. Takes a lot of capital. Unity you've got to have the money and used to be a date target probably started working on this 510 years ago. If you're trying to play catch up in that arena it's pretty tough environment. That's true I also noticed that Kohl's you know significantly cut its debt and also is seems to be exploring some new smaller format the jet that was kind of interesting so there actually closing down four of the larger underperforming stores and replacing them with smaller format. So that might be assigned Nichols is saying okay we see the writing on the wall maybe these big boxing in going to be is it going for our great. Papa John's back in the news and it has to do with their founder. John Schneider. He's going to be resigning from the board of directors and relief sounds like he's gonna have to disassociate it from the company altogether. Yeah I mean his. Remarks that he made that or rather racist on Sam calls. On and really tarnished the company's dimension. There finally reaching an agreement so that he can. He can kind of quietly move way. Stocks trading at 44 dollars now and in the last year's traded as high as 64 dollars. It really rallied if you go back and you look at a few years ago remember they had to Tucker who's the quarterback it was Eli Manning was and he of big endorser of puppet jobs. I think dues Peyton Manning Peyton now when I knew what the better Manning on the betterment. I mean if you go back. I mean this is stock it's treated his eyes ED dollars a share and now it's down 44 dollars this year and it's one point. Four billion dollar company. You always maintained that he thought they had pretty good quality pizza. Now I've never Republicans Mallard. We haven't known this and they just a jerk no I think your referring to Domino's. Is I think dominance is actually pretty good. That's who is attuned to mourn the Internet porn varied different is yes yes we do. As last time he brought Domino's old your household Christine. Passages the heck I don't like I did this frequently. I have a dollar and those are my times that step for the players about. The district. That Carlos Gulbis finally gonna get out of jail as. It looks that way he's been granted bail by a Tokyo court and that means he can be released within a couple of days. There are you know the prosecutors on the case at a plan appealing that decision because they want him to stay in jail. I guess is Ellison about eight point nine million dollars in their several conditions. He eat yes to study in Japan Britain that can't have a heat it. It's used here like email his family if they're not in the country that's right it can't communicate people overseas and. If I. You you you've got some experience with bees are all Asian countries like that it just seems like very restrictive in terms of human rights and personal. I mean I think that. I don't know what rationale is but I would imagine it's more that they are trying to control any business dealings or anything and limiting its now I can't speak to it Tunisian singer the united squarely as well. I an EUS court would allow you to pattern call your family Canada or Europe. East. I've I've I've found this whole Karl's goal. A rest. And persecution or prosecution. To the or one site and had no idea that Japanese courts worked in that fashion like it once you're accused of jail and and for the duration. And to your trial and then they need to go to jail for the Christian he just seems like eight year. In Japan. You wore guilty to all over the news. Witches different. In the world. That flight risk issue are worried that he's gonna find a way to get out of the country and I haven't done that. I mean in paying cursory on people at story about my risks here in the United Center and honestly asking. You know they they wouldn't but. I wouldn't hold and that he's been in jail for three months yeah I mean it's a month and then he's costly health has deteriorated I mean just. And it just seems. It is if he pure human rights in Japan are markets we less than they are here in the states. I don't know if you saw this story or not. A representative Peter Defazio and other house Democrats are reintroducing. A financial services tax. With EOC. As a cosponsor. With this within Paul Christine eases every transaction. That an investor makes so we use a consumer you worded goal on line and tree your count. There would be an additional tax for every share of stock that you traded or Greek bond that you purchased. What's the thought process behind so that then you know two races I think about. 700 billion dollars. Yeah I mean I think over the course of ten years the reasoning. That increased revenue is one motivation. Mentioned that they're trying to discourage high frequency trading. And avoid a flash crash like what they'd seen in previous years and I was thinking theory that it might be helpful for listeners that he kind of explain. That rationale in terms of why we wanted to scourge. Now the there's a lot of day traders' heads are in the market in their criticized quite frequently. Because they know they'll move in and out of the stock and a dozen times during the course of the day. Ends you know the thought is that increases volatility actually dancers that I think but it does it increases. Liquidity within the markets because you have people they they are actually buying back stock and providing liquidity to the market. Lot of the TV and there's different schools of thought and different theories on Monday traders. The Democrats are saying they wanted to do this and I don't think he really have that treating public. As a concern I think what they're doing is looking at Tennessee. Method of generating additional tax revenue from wealthy people. Yeah I think they're looking at that's an okay well you know the that the people that'll stocks in the country. Are in that top 45%. This is a way for us to tax the top 45% the American public. With this over share trading cost. As to whether it goes anywhere being item is certainly not gonna go anywhere between now and the end of next year. I think this is the type thing yet to be more concerned about if the Democrats were to control the house the senate and the White House. That's by. Elizabeth Warren losses. Basically impose anything goes with worms. But if that's where I draw the let's see it it Dow is down 57 points and when we return our beat talking about. Another college it's closing in the spring. And the high cost of rent in certain parts of New England all that and more coming up next on the financial exchange. No need to stare at the charts graphs and numbers all day and just listen to us it's the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck signed up on the financial exchange radio network. Andy to be used for right purposes for small business owners give us an example. Well one example that recently happened was there was a restaurant and he urged it was growing very rapidly they are always full occupancy. And the space next order then became available. So they wanted to. Take on that space you need capital to sort build out. The rest Ron. And you know was about a 300000 dollar loan. About it how many years did that it back typically these types of loans vary anywhere between five to ten years lots of time. So you know we were able to quickly make that. Underwriting decision provide in the capital expanded at rexrodt has grown tremendously them as is one of one of many examples in what they're landscaper or. I forgot to mention our poll question today and that is should the stock trading be taxed. And as I described earlier let's say you wanted to go by a thousand shares of General Electric. Each share that you purchased would have a small tax like point 03 the the X. It just curious sister your thoughts on the you can participate in the poll by visiting our website its financial exchange showed dot com or. You can Texas tech's line here's 63566. You know venture capital investing. Use it all wonderful thing here in Massachusetts Emmys a lot of money being invested in in companies. Six billion dollars worth of new funding went into health care related companies Christine. And three point seven billion according to technology companies. And that's kind of flip flopped from where was I don't know 1520 years ago. Yeah back in 2000 at the height of the Internet than we summit fast growing tech companies actually took the lion's share of investment attracting over six billion about six point six billion. And their health care counterparts attracted just one point one billion. Now you know health care definitely is drive in particular in this area because you've got an aging demographic and people are realizing. Things like alzheimer's disease are literally being classified as epidemics now because it's affecting so much of the population. But interestingly I think I think the one thing that this article that came on the possibly of they didn't know. Was having talked with a lot of in DC and I'll sue on entrepreneur hours in this in aviation area. It's not just your health care although I know you know by attack you know is is obviously attracting a mind share but. With in health care Yost see health care technology San meaning that a lot of investors are looking for. The latest innovations applying some of AI and other deep technology in the health care round so that's one of the new wants as they think that. You know companies all. This should be aware of the year there seems to be a heavy concentration though. Inside. And I was gonna say inside 128 but it's even more microscopic than that it's having these companies seemed all want to be. In Cambridge word itself and I mean they they want to be really in the heart of Boston. Unlike is an access to that the minds of I ninety that graduates that PH seemed all the research that's being funded at those big universities Harvard MIT. You know all of them it's convenient for Annan to access those populations is convenient for those people to. On gathered together and you see a lot of kind of ecosystems of groups coming together at conferences and everything. Not just organized by professionals but by students themselves. See the cost of rent though I mean it talks about a hundred dollars per square foot yeah it's just. At night you wonder when and where I've seen this before. And you know wit when you hit that hundred dollar point that seemed to be the peak and then things took a real tumble after that they. We would would he hear from business owners in the city I mean how can they afford a hundred dollars a foot. It's really hard I think that's why you're seeing a rise of those co working space is not just for. Office spaces traditional office spaces but even for lab spaces you're seeing more mart and they're staring a branch out they're not just in the Cambridge area Watertown they're starting to spring up. You know Newton now they're starting to spring up Sig you're seeing it start to spread out because the rents are exorbitant only high. But that'll help landlords that are out on 12495. At some point I would think everything eventually even help Worcester and in Springfield where companies say. Okay yeah we need to have our scientists in the city but we don't need to have our manufacturing. Right next door we can push that out to Webster. I have to say is and one of the things we need to address in this community is transportation. Because the roads system as we have now just can't handle the car traffic so we really do need to address some of those infrastructure issues to make Sharon people who can get in now. And the problem that does it take so long if you if you if all the sudden you had the funding for major infrastructure projects today. Ten years before takes effect. Right exactly about the Big Dig number in dignity along that take fifteen years right right news goes a long long time it took us. Southern Vermont College closing its stores this spring justice another school that couldn't survive. Yeah and this is the third college in Vermont that's closing after Green Mountain College in poll knee and the college of Saint Joseph and Rutland. On and I guess Goddard College in Plainfield is on probation which means that it has two years to satisfy creditors concerns. You know it's not just in Vermont and Maine Massachusetts new brick college is going to be closing the spring and that follows Mount Ida College is closing in real rocks merger with Boston University. So you know these small liberal arts colleges are really under pressure. They are in in you know when Mount Ida College closed the people that worked there were readily able to find new jobs but if you're in Bennington Vermont right and you lose your job at the college is probably its 400 students put so what would there be for employees under 250 police. Yup and then you have all the services that you know surrounding the college that would be affected yet you think about the kind of that ecosystem knickers up around every campus. It's it's gonna devastate that immediate community. Of Pennington. They literally come back we'll take a peek at what the stock market's doing Michael Armstrong will join us for stock talk of Ross take a look at. Biogen they just made another acquisition. So what do you think about this Biogen story they're buying it gene therapy firm and pointed to ever pay a premium for. They didn't this firm has an office at I guess it's day it's London based company called ninth star that also has an office here in the US in Waltham Massachusetts. But you know by Chen is in large drugmaker it dies really into what's known as gene therapy which is a very cutting edge. Potentially lucrative area of by a technology that uses specially engineered viruses. To delivered genetic material into defective cells in the hopes of treating or possibly eating curing an inherited disorder. I guess opt to knowledge you there is saying is an emerging growth area for Biogen and that's what attracted them to this company. The it almost sounds is sounds somewhat similar to immunotherapy does. We re engineer the cells it does it does and you know by agent is known for its portfolio of medicines that treat Kennedy's Mary sophisticated diseases like multiple sclerosis. And it has the only approved treatment for spinal muscular atrophy. But you know what really struck me was the fact that they really look for these on their p.s that are kind of single use. At was pretty aggressive in terms and he now how past teach it they are now looking for some. And there are still pouring too is gobs of money at alzheimer's and you've heard you mention alzheimer's before that it's reaching. Epidemic proportions. I was with a senior expert guy issues but a year ago. And he mentioned Christine that 50%. Of people over the age of ninety. Are suffering from some form of either dementia alzheimer's however you want to you know do whatever hi everyone in term it. 50% of people over ninety you look at that the size of that population that's growing exponentially. Right well well as the baby boomers age you knew unions see those numbers rise norm Morant defeat concern isn't just the treatment haven't fixed the care of these people. Right and we care for these people. You know it's not like other diseases where eat you go in you get some medicine any hope that it works this is rated senator disease her. People can hurt themselves you know unintentionally. If they're not well cared for and it's very very expensive to take care. Yep picture is. Dangerous. Tucker what's your fight the score I heard that millennial strict their fight score reported hours. That's not true release from my point of view but I'm last reject them eat. Fourteen. So you do. And I know check it for forty hours of the book for Christina and are covering this story. Clearly states that ails. Want to be members of the country clubs like you get something for being in the 800 club. Don't get a prize earned now DO. I don't think I don't know I don't like sports stories that you don't. I don't know Blake at that. You know here's Christine. None of the top at night every now and then I I have is that it's so much easier to get holder when he won two and all the credit card companies are off rain down and history. I mean yeah I American Express it's right there on my dashboard in justice to your credit score of pop turn up. Look it up pretty easy. He went execute you to pay for it. Dot you'd deeply if you want at an earlier Michael score you remember that Christie and he you did at one NC years collector needs an agent after that I had to pay it wouldn't inflicting your score a little bit if you if you asked to laughing yeah you have to him. What's the point of that you would to dean what you try to be conscientious about your credit score you try to check in like we're gonna continue to. So Tucker is this the you're infatuation with your Psycho scorer and problems. Well you oh you're the only person yeah there's three people in the room right. These Christine who's not a millennial we're not gonna tell everybody how old she is she's she's accurate. There's me who's really old. And there's you let yeah I'm the only one yeah that has any idea. How how dare that whatever their Michael score yes how dare you how Derek thirty year old who just had a kid and mind you. Wants to know his credit score how dare try. That's what. For free on my two credits or dashboard. Because if you know somebody else might need to know that information. You've got it well you know your your eyes at notre. So to golf. If that your but is it do you know what did you know your Michael score before you decided to buy a house. No not really. Are really. So it's baby maybe your behavior is impacted by your desire to own property is it is that. I mean certainly that's a factor it's like anything. You know financially driven. Knowing your credit score. Is very useful. That should be our poll question I should use that today instead we're jeweler what. Do you know your Michael's. So that the which he's at tomorrow topping your head and then yeah on the document up it chopped noses. Oh he definitely I think you actually mentioning yes it. At some equity 22 or something like the ice it acts abbate Christine and I have crappy scores and throw it. It probably seven hundredths or something I mean at stoke good. So all kinds of tricks. You can use to increase your scored CNET yeah I can pay every week and cardinals and an increase it not been. Oh. And you proper estate planning can be the difference between retiring comfortably or living out your days under incredible financial pressure creating this state. Plan is not a difficult process. But it can be if you're not working with a expert who make sure that your plan is secure. My friend Bob Lutz. Tesla back in the news eight X we should just have like a Tesla segment every day Tucker I think and and yeah I mean dedicate one segment of the show. 1520 minutes every day to test. I mean as we've you know we've heard from some text are saying are you guys cover Tesla to much bushes like there's literally the news every day about this company in the sea your ocean so fascinating. That the breezed and we have to cover you know. Yeah I guess. The coming out with the model why announcement Christine. The this is what. Is it immediacy with what is it. It's like a crossover vehicle of some kind but it think they have the key thing is that at that lower price. Than its model three weeks in typical line I think it's going to be higher but it's going to be iron. Yet little bit higher than the model three of us temper but the crossover vehicle that is of what it was is that they offered. Bases they're gonna offer a cheaper version of the model as well. Ray in an amount that announcement. Well the here's the thing the knock on the model batteries beast besides the fact that the bumpers fall off in the snow. That can be fixed rate BP the bit to. Another knock them is that players it's it's not have to back it's an old fashioned drop in its sedan as opposed to. And suvs so. You think about it. People like having that big trucks place do you drive us today Christian I can't imagine you do. Negativity out on the campaign yes he needs to have like seventeen children. At least. Feels like yeah right like at that. The hole right eight you'd like it to be multiply it. Yeah yeah yeah I can bring somebody home for an athlete at a. You notice your too hospitable. For for teenagers and it is destined to do anything. And any work in and teenagers willfully that's at some parenting advice but hated Tesla shares a lot of people saying that. This is kinda. Fodder for the bears I I saw another story. Whitney Tilson saying that the stock is gonna lose 66%. Of its value this year. You know others are saying it has no value it's gonna go bankrupt. Yet Elon Musk continues to be top of the news cycle virtually every. Then. Yea gotta wonder if that's just encouraging short selling so I I always take a skeptical line it's it is. Big numbers when when it has been managers think something's gonna I'll bet. Very significant I think the tiny mean issue around all of these announcements mean just to make a series of announcements we Tesla did all the same time you have to wonder. You know cutting sales staff and closing show rooms. Paying off a billion dollars in debt like all these things all at once that's that's quite a number of things to announce the end of the SEC might give. You on some crap over this model why announcement simply because he announced it on Twitter. And what it wasn't like an official press release sort of thing and it's you know stock tore a hole that earn their way he just created out. Coming out a new vehicle. The ease it. You when you I actually worry about that a little bit but. His outlandish behavior. Could chase him right out of the country you know they keep John Rooney brought that up last year exit you know. He could see John was critical. On and his behavior. But he said you know what it means you don't wanna do is chase this guy into the arms of the Chinese right disease Egypt to Libya like the guy or not he he's pretty Smart. Right do you really want to one of our Smart ones like Steve Jobs type person. Work with the Chinese I believe. But it was down yesterday why is it down red orange. I Barry good to be back. Show. That stock have gone down from about 278. Have been up to forty of them not because so. Because of all the noise about Medicare for all. In does that speak eat it and it that would be bad not just for. United Healthcare I'm assuming it would be bad for sick men and any other insurance company right is that basically put the insurance companies out of business. Yes that would obviate the need for employer provided health insurance because. The government essentially will be providing health insurance through the whole population. So a single Payer. Is scaring. A lot of investors with the likelihood of some like that happening right G. I think the likelihood of that happening is there is no cut the deficit. Kind of just be opening bout both. So that they. If there isn't I mean it's definitely not gonna pop that caucus. Hey you know to get from now if yeah I have a new president and democratic majority in both caught and bought houses. Then there is some job that might but even then. You know you can look for the bears could. As gently as do. Lobbied hard to ensure that it doesn't. You know I mean Obama had that radiates supermajority and he couldn't massacre that chose not to. We're so which your opinion of the stock in the if it's down forty dollars in short period time that you thinking this system and the buyer with what's your opinion. Yep definitely united is one of the best managed. Companies in America. And you can look at them all gunshot the other stop. I guess the government. Less than 100 you know it two on and body. Even after the recent decline. The company. Buy buy back stock they all tuck in acquisitions. And consistently increase the earnings Serbia. It's a long term compound. Which definitely belongs in it every stop what cookbook for. Too little dividend on it right about one and a half percent. Yet they have not they don't give it another huge portion of their earnings. They've reportedly. Small tuck in acquisitions that buyback. Price earnings ratio call when he won is that consistent with their competitors or is it more expensive less expensive. Yeah I think it on between ninety and running at about sixteen times. It. You know a little more expensive than big enough. Probably Bob and about them. But you know that I think quantity as I. You know they do consistently create I think that so. I would definitely gave it more of a premium for bad. I put it back competitive. And you think they can compete with CBS. Yes definitely. You know it hit a botnet now. They're probably gonna outcome integration and then you know united could take some contract that we of that. Aden united thinking about doing a similar strategy yours there are they sticking to their knitting. No I arrived I don't think they don't know be opening any doors that means that they do have. Something that is the example. Is the advent of the code often. That provide outfit. I don't see them actually going not goodbye. Definitely comes into play with sort of security. In addition to social security and another item that people have when it comes to retirement pensions. Is that the same type of conversation and same type the calculus the people need to go through. We received adds it's about 10 AM some really strong data and surprisingly strong data. As it relates to new home sales were supposed to be negative for the month of December they were in fact positive strongly positive. And yet stocks continue to sell off that doused down 44 points the NASDAQ down five. Crude oil is down thirteen cents a barrel and the S&P 500 stamp on the other thing that happened is. You had a number of companies target and cold bowl to report really strong earnings season in same store sales so for for the life of me. Not quite sure why the market's down but it is for everybody it's burying Christine Dunn with you here. And it's the Tuesday morning. I guess we'll start off with this FDA story Christine. They are putting fifteen national retailers on notice for allegedly selling tobacco products to minors. Yeah and the one company that really stands out on this is actually long greens which an investigation found that 22%. Of Walgreens locations. We're actually selling products to minors. On the FDA has also sent minus and looks like they're really cracking down on the Sperry to more than forty companies that they suspect. May have introduced. That everybody's tacking about I know there have been a lot of aggressive PSAs on television. It's geared to children minority try to get them to be aware about the dangers of keeping on the car you do that with your kids. Well you know my kids talk really openly about eight being and the fact that it is prevalence. I think that it's. We had very very open conversations just about drugs and alcohol and tobacco and general for a very young age. So first Sid did all signs are that mean hence the lessons seem to be sticking that they do you talk about the fact that it's very widespread in the schools. It is and what did end howls like what's the oldest child via. Sent Telus says sophomore in high school she's in sixteen this month and you know as readily available and a lot of kids just don't seem to be aware of the fact that. It's not safe for to be using these products percent and there's a lot of myths out there about the safety of them. Well when you're that age two year you know you're invincible. Right right and I guess there's also been some figures about the fact that kids are more likely be even pick up smoking after beeping for awhile. It was a press thinks how I think they're starting to take a look at that as well. You know sepia. Scott out that this so they're not I looked at they're not on the list they give the reason is they don't sell tobacco products into staying. And we got out of that business and I was actually critical of them because I thought it was unit generated profits but. Walgreen date the fifth profits that Walgreen generated by selling tobacco who pried the diminished based on finds that there receipt. Been beaten absolutely and they're having to implement some new policies and are to crack down themselves and employees who've been doing this. Tucker we're gonna have to organize a bake sale. Poor rob hiker. His competency for a guy you know in that he should get a net compensation cut so. Christine can you help us with that system we can do maybe at a Tuesday. It but it did not pressure but that that that that's what happened with so what's gonna. Well looks like. Shareholders have been pushing back on these really big compensation packages and mr. riker. Even after these cuts barrier remains one of the highest paid executives in the media industry that after the 71 billion dollar takeover of censure what is at century 21 fox right. Attorney for century fox rate on journalists came back and that any candidate at a cut back in slimmed down the steel now. I have to say it's pretty healthy and so. What don't you look at a guy Geiger at least they this is my eat he's old media he you know he's I think he's close to seventy years old. And if I'm on the board of directors for it is obscene dude how did you miss the whole Netflix thing in letting you buy them when it was a ten billion dollar company. And definitely at I just I don't know they there's this whole generation old CEOs that. I think they missed the mark in I I wouldn't be that in thrall to haven't Bob Iger and you know what they don't have a successor please. The there's nobody. That's back up arranged the sale OK let's turn this over to us so and so he's just not. They don't have a deep bench coaches. Mes per company of that size does. Nancy and the fox deposition was the largest in the company's history at this I say you were hoping that this would be a driver. In a shift Howard's direct consumer options like streaming that you're right I mean. Right now it looks like they're really late in the ball game. If only ESP and people were pale and on to it which the prevailing attitude tortillas paean these days Tucker. Their attitude. Well yeah yeah yeah yeah actually it. If you ask me know all know watching it but the numbers and there are you spam plus apple are up. There she's doing pretty well I think it was like. 34 million subscribers and for my parents you know it's 499 a month. Bombed so they're apt is actually doing better than I anticipated. Non splinters their original programming now it's it's awful. I'd I'd ever I can tell you I'm watching that and you know walk into the gym and they've got it playing. Yeah that's a few minutes that I literally the only time I'll watch it. I think I haven't they've got a ticket could watch it deepened I want we have that you gave up cable. Europe Hulu hello. I've actually DirecTV now. A panacea its users things definitely honor him though it is on their behalf that thanks I'll although we'll track. But he if it is I'm not like to think that maybe award double checked it doesn't matter. Here's a shocking statistics people who live in states where marijuana is legal are eating more cookies and ice cream. Not to mention burritos. But look back at Ayers steadiness. But researchers are taking a look at what a waste of time we skated chip and picky and eighth in sales. And they found that all of this increase in Colorado Oregon and in Washington. After marijuana was legalized via then UConn did the study in Georgia State. The NB they. Looked at the data it and get this. Interesting now is you know you had. Campus. Recreational. Vehicle. In port Perry in organ since I guess fifteen and in Colorado since twelve. So now there's going to be this data available to us not just on like kind of snacks people are using but it. You know car accidents. Domestic likely it it'll be fascinating to look at the body of data. You know I don't know maybe twenty years after the fact to see what happened to American society as a result of legalizing recreational or one. I think one of the reasons why researchers are taking a look at this is because. In they've been trying to make progress for so long in the obesity epidemic in the obesity epidemic. It isn't just about an immediate health issue the kind of long term health and workforce impacts. Of obesity says if you're seeing. An increase in the snacking and related pounds for that that's gonna have a ripple effect across our economy our health care system the whole thing. Yang and I would gas I don't know but I would guess that you know after the high product go to the gym and work out to a right. Alina a night I don't know way it is I'm thinking that's probably not part of your repertoire. After. Use consumed. Campus however it is you choose to consume and they. To state the the stats are going to be fascinating as to take a look at them. Here's a story for marketwatch.com. Don't write off stocks just yet because the market has just. What it would would it takes to hit new peaks this according to JPMorgan. The bishop actually stems statistical evidence that would indicate would probably have a pretty good year this year for stocks. Why do you think today's sell off is a precursor to that eaten at supports this theory year what do you think Mary Kate militant that's. Now I mean we're not down to me down 24 points or even yesterday elder. Now. 99. Think they were the search for a rehearsed yesterday. You know the years say say you sell your stocks and say you're one of the people that sold stocks yesterday. My question to you would be. Okay you sold your stocks what you do with that money now easel. And it's sitting to fashion. Maybe make one or 2%. On Germany which is less than the rate of inflation. Or you can. Buy stocks and that are over for me and I don't buy stocks thinking Altria and by the because I want them to go up by the end the year I want them to go up every day the pages dole yes stocks go up and out. But I feel reasonably confident that tenure short now. By owning stocks the stocks that I failed. I think he'll do better then sitting cash for the next to yours and saw it. For years I've seen people plea to gain of timing the market they make all. I go I saw what Warren Buffett just did enter. Bill Gates mentioned this you know eat at these high profile investors that might make a statement regarding stocks of people tradeoff. You know to Sully your own peril because Italian you look at the equity markets after long periods of time. They tend to do pretty well and they tend outperform. Your safe investments like yours CDs your bonds in your fixed in any that's just. One man's opinion. Before we go under or next segment which involves ridiculing noble ideals Tucker you wanna set this up for us. Bill Kazaa I don't know what your referring to. We ever miss an opportunity to ridicule are millennial coworkers. And I saw a story out just read the headline to you and attribution to author of this story. Porter 63% of millennial homeowners had buyer's remorse. Deborah currents from Bankrate dot com joins us now to talk about that story I'd ever hurry. I think you that in. Again great record here in Colorado. Oh that's OK that's at eight winter to be spring before you know it there. Let's let's talk about mullah deals and here. Buyer's remorse is this a usual have been I've bought property before and and regret that. Right well it is still like you said it was nearly two apparently money out homeowners surveyed said they have regrets and a quarter of millennial. Expressed this specific regret and that was the unexpected expenses and that come with the repairs and then meat man so. Across all age groups this is the leading cause of the Pinehurst or worse. That Moline ill especially now. And they think but trying out of a lot of them are first time homeowners so they're not entirely prepared for the financial shop that comes with getting it. You know that built to replace windows or refer bastard AC unit though. The forum here renteria could quietly emerge in have been fixed that and pay for it. But that the people returned when you're a homeowner has any of us were homeowners know and so. You know especially here carrying some of those big ticket items in the initially yourself how much it can lead to feelings. Panic we hate Hedo got so politically in medium in over my head with this perk up. So is it do you have the impression those that. Baby boomers were any different when they were in their twenties late and I'm wondering if this is just due to eat should not really. As much as I'm looking for a reason to ridiculed ideals I just wondered if this is something that happens to everybody who's in their twenties and thirties when they buy their first house. Fifty years ago and took. It's certainly a factor it right ethnic assists back. Chuck Cook national winner now all these cost Paula mean still I think throughout every generation I'm sure so pat pat. Beard that flared tee enact let after they about it on the relaxed. All these metrics let Arafat before. I think what especially acute interval perennials and talks were first time. Umpires right now is that whole crisis has surged dramatically in recent years in a far outpacing its. We each growth so you know you're paying more gear and caused the buy a house and income folks in the past worry could get a re vetoed decently affordable home on it. You know in the middle income. How folded. Middle income but these days I think that's getting harder and harder especially for younger folks who. You know their wages are keeping peace that the explosives a great growth that many markets have had I'm sure park and included though. I you know I think that's another. Factor completing an unfocused mines as they. You know it paid more of their income to begin with the buyer of home the ban on opposite. You just legions overtime aren't keeping up with all the cost of living increases we see. Is it still the American dream to own your own home remember my my wife and I did not a whole when we got married in 1985. End point that was believed we'd started seeding to buy a home. Long before we ever got married. That was how important it was to us. Right yeah and is still is you know our survey found that 79% of all respondents across all age groups. Bill do you homeownership as part of the American tree and that went ahead of other places like being able to retire. Having a successful career and owning up ourselves. You think you know that because how did a successful career getting college degree are our you know those are two accomplishment that set you up. NATO is eerie to be a lead paint some of these other things certainly the career part of it more so than anything else. Leo's interest in a few that. I think our survey also looked at as but the toward non homeowners what's holding them back and top half of respondents did say that income was the primary care they just can't afford it and then the other 41% they can't for the down payment closing costs. That are coming with homeownership these days men of their. Saturday 9% percent you said your article 79% of people surveyed want to own home. It would the homeownership rates about 64%. Does that bouts were never let it. Still consider it. To be part of the American stream so badly that you can draw about relations and they add believe those believe yes. And got that was released does that homeownership rate had fallen. Right right after. Back to the downturn. It's put a pledge quite a bit will be a record low level and it's steadily been coming up. But at his very well piece because I think it's now at 64%. So it should mean there's pent up demand 79% people wanna buy homes and it's only 64% now. There's. Definitely a lot of sense that in the end I think what you're seeing a lot of market position got a lot of inventory each instrument especially in the entry level and that's where it. And most competitive rate weary you don't maybe don't have to big collection of inventory welcome to. Are tightening their stay in their homes longer I think he's he's. A lot of folks are probably looking the home prices and well but don't mind and I have a really good three right now. If I am Barack Obama became way more might have a higher interest rates any bit of bad but a couple of years ago bill. And it just seemed more people speak split new construction and is struggling trying to keep peace with the new buyer demand. So I think it's all coming together in certain markets terrorist well and the fact that there's just not enough hold screw around. With the folks that are either that they're waiting in the wings hoping to get their chance that if you're sitting at home ownership tore. Deborah TD great research on this and I appreciate your joining us thank you very much. Deborah currents from Bankrate dot com telling us. Of you know random repairs that are needed and and and you know you don't have the emergency savings to back that up. You know you buy your house in in January and then all of a sudden the grass starts to grow April you know coaches' access to cut the grass neat article pile on more. Rory I get just. It it's not always pops up. Well in Indy this thing is. You know lot of kids grew up where their parents head landscape services and answer this straight they gotta know by you but they like my kids. The news the Viet bid to cut the grass in the east to get ridiculed. At school because it shovels snow and cut the grass we we didn't have landscaper. You know it has. I folks this is Mike Armstrong and I'm joined state by state planning attorney Todd not ski with your financial exchange quick tip of the day. Today we're talking about the top state planning mistakes that you need to avoid you know Todd so many people create their state plan but they then failed to fund it. Explain why it is such a big mistake in what we mean by you know quite funding your state yeah its it's really huge and it you've got to look at it from two points of view one. You're spending money after spending money. To put together an estate plan to want to work your right and if you don't put assets in your trust that you create its not working. In two very important respects. One if you have a revoke Coble trust. And you don't fund it. Well that of course you're not avoiding probably because all the assets would be your name that's a big problem too. That language in that trust is what it's designed to help reduce estate taxes when one spouse dies. It shelters assets and and utilizes exemptions. There's nothing in there. It's not helping you do that nothing shelter so that that's not a good idea. And from an irrevocable Medicaid point of view if you want it if you're in case you're concerned about doing that kind of planning can you imagine not funding those trusts. Not only do you have all the same problems that we just mentioned with a revoke able trust but one very important problem you never started your five year waiting period. And so if you create an irrevocable trust don't put assets in in five years goes by and you think your assets are protected from the nursing home. They're not. You better fund trusts you better and it's something that they you know. They see all the time folks starting these escape plans for not buying them top let's in the estate planning experts at Cushing and Dolan. Have written a brand new guide that details the top estate planning mistakes that you want to avoid you can request this brand new guy by calling 8668. Foray. 5699. That number again is 866848. 5699. American Airlines in the news Christine what they do this to. Well they apparently kicked mother and her baby off will fly eight. Because the I guess stewardess. In question. So inflammation and redness and like irrational honor I think it was the mom. And it was concerns. That maybe she was in it for flying she asked the mother for a letter from the doctor which neither did not have it turns out that the mother and her baby. Both have this and usual dry skin condition. And they were having against the flare up or something and that's what they sought and sit there. Request to stay on the flights were refused they are kicked off. Well. The edge needed aid. I I have to assume it must have been very unsightly. In in in order to make somebody a test we all have. If you look at kids they the teenagers a look at some of the acne cases you see him in in like we'll have a few. Issues right that is but it must've been pretty bad for the Stewart flight attendant from off the plane. I'm wondering it may be enough and I'm just guessing here but I'm wondering if with all of the concerns about measles and everything flight attendant was concerned that sentiment that was going on. And you to hear you know from. Airlines and and stewardesses that people often line about conditions that medical conditions that they haven't to get on a plane. And where it's an enclosed space it makes a everybody on the flip vulnerable so it is at the discretion of the Stewart's sincere or illnesses. On whether or not a a passenger should be allowed to stay on if they deemed not to date they might be paying other passengers risks and it is that they're there are allowed to do that they are out to Nate I've seen him throw drunk off the plate. Right guy got on. It isn't business class. Is loaded. And pay feature of the hell off the plane in wanna deal could for four hours right because it's an enclosed space they have to think about the safety of everybody. Unfortunately for this mom on she felt humiliated by the whole thing I guess he has a website in everything to raise awareness. About this particular condition. So it was a legitimate just dry skin issue it's just genetic. So American Airlines tried to make it right by you know and refunding her ticket not bring her first class flight home but the poor woman I mean she just must've been so embarrassed. Get over here in my view you flew for free range and India business class they pay for your hotel room I mean they did to. He would hit it in retrospect. I guess the mother now have to carry a letter with parents and look this is my what I got for condition in problem in the points. Now. She's a story about the millstone nuclear plant. Great so it looks like even. There are hopes that do it and seeing open that the company an unfit is he about shattering it after. Now wonder if this is posturing your again I think it's part of the negotiations they wanna be able to charge more but their electricity because it's. You know here's the they're not burning coal to make it. This is a huge facility though if I can't remember what percentage of Connecticut's electricity is produced by Bill Stone. But it's in Waterford is right on the water. End it's you know like I think people that. You know block island and its surrounding communities price think gee I hope they do close now they tear it down because it's unsightly. Is that it's not terribly attractive no nuclear power plant is attractive. But it's a major source of energy I don't know how you replace that. Well and it employs about 15100 people send me nuts pretty significant to the local economy. Not to mention ninths the company that owns it dominion is saying that it plays an important role in helping Connecticut curb carbon emissions. On so you know another significant environmental benefit there. You're right it might be posturing that's but it definitely. Big point discussion both from the economy in an everything else. Yeah I I've talked to people in Connecticut in the energy field and they say one of the things that will make it almost impossible to close that facility. Is. The you know if you are put natural gas and use natural gas injury police and mechanism. Connecticut's full grant and the cost associated with the pipelines for natural gas in Connecticut against or just through the astronaut. So and he Dominion Resources probably knows that they've got some leverage their hands are using that as a tool to get more money for their electricity. Just bought I could be.
