This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and jokes are and a you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're simply your world. Stay informed and today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and shocks. The stock market. It is rallying but don't get too attached to the money your making today because the dean's that you're seeing in equity prices could be leading why do I say that. Well a lot of the games seem to be attributable to. An expectation that we're gonna have some kind of negotiated trade deals with China hi everybody it's buried truck with you here. And I'd just take it to to what wrapped up with the 1% gain. You're not not not buying it. I'll take it I mean it it shows up on my statements. Counts are up I'm not not gonna turn it down my point is that. You know knee is it seems as if today to this rally is based on comments coming out of the White House. That are expressing positive sentiment towards our possibility of getting trade deals done with China but. We could get an announcement in thirty minutes or tweet from the president than twenty minutes that sets the mark. Out here Bennett I think you and I've kind of in the last week you know I think we're kind of on the same page as far as it feels like China is just trying to run out the clock. On these negotiations and just say okay we'll just keep you know asking for additional time and additional time. And here we've kind of seen that playbook before you know who sees right through. So Steve Bannon I was reading some stuff on Steve this morning. And he's he is absolutely. Convinced that the reason the president is backing down against China's because of Wall Street. Oh I don't know about that nearly so. None well here's the thing it's actually this is actually something that's kind of interesting to look at the Steve thinks that they should have invoked those terrorists back in December here's something that's actually interesting to look at if you look at. That true kind of competing forces in this negotiation for the president not not for present Jeep for president trump. On one hand you have a promise that he's made to his basin to the American people say look I want to. You know put the screws to China and really try to negotiate a better deal for. US citizens. On the other hand one of the biggest things that he talents is the growth of the US economy and he can only go so far in tightening the screws against China before it starts to blow back with you know additional Chinese tariffs and devaluations of the currency and things like that zone. It's this balancing a rock and a hard place I think he's trying to balance that. In to this point at least in these negotiations if feels like the economy's kind of winning out in that team we have these tariffs that we're supposed to go into place to be in the last year. Punted on the now there's talk there might be another two month extension yeah it in and that's why am saying it seems like China is just running out the clock here. It did they're doing a very effective job. Indeed Chinese negotiators seem to be doing a little better than the American negotiators. Yesterday we reported just before we went off fair. Talk or so will glean the fact that Amazon had canceled their each Q2 plans for New York City this is turned out to be. The lead story. Everywhere. This I thing is if we look back ten years from now than. I think it's going to be one of the most important stories in hindsight. Do you think it's Smart move on the part of New York City Yuri think they're gonna regret. I don't think this has anything to do with New York City in particular. I I don't those New York City news Amazon pulled out because politicians had made their lives miserable. No Williams on I don't they why do you think it was on pulled up to politicians made their lives miserable. While the that's that's all the headlines saying it the Democrats in New York City were torturing him is on in. They just decided we don't wanna deal with all the the liberals and New York so I don't think this is. Aid to separate the headlines and as they've yes I think they're wrong here's here's why. Amazon I think we can probably agree is one of the two or three most powerful companies on the plan. Do you think that's a in exactly and sadly adds there a degree just because they've become we've all become many of us have become very dependent. So they're one of the two or three most powerful companies on the play you can you know pull a handful of other ones out there Apple's use Google you know but there in just about every house in America. They are if it's impossible to get away from. And Amazon over the last two decades since they've been in business since I think 1997 yeah. They have pretty much rolled over in completely dominated any business. Industry or city that they've wanted to get into they they have consistently. Just crushed anything that has stood in their way. This right here's the first time that Amazon has had to back down on anything. And to be completely honest is the first time that they've had to back down anything it's that such a big investment for the miss something so public now you know they've had small losses in the past where hey we tried these new shots they don't know why do you think they're backing up it's not political. I think it's the political environment but not what it's. Is being referenced I don't think it's politicians and get them back down no I don't we think it is a regret the high recognition and it's too I cops know. I think it is individuals I think it is the ground swell of public sentiment that is causing this not any BO. It was on always gotten needled by politicians. That happens in every city that you do business and you always like that's the cost of doing business already and go meet this 20000 jobs. I don't think they're gonna go anywhere I'd I don't think they're going to do not saying they're gonna redouble their efforts in Nashville. I don't think Amazon's the biggest story here I that I know that ever wants sale where's Amazon gonna go what do they get it. I don't think that matters that this is big from a sin by all winners the last time that you had a city. Turn to a company and say it in the people in the city turned to a company and say. No you're not bring in jobs here because we don't like you. Boston turning down the Olympics. Boston that was the city boss that was not the people near the city says it is what we can't make this work what when's the last time you had a city in again it was a one time of Santos a groundswell of them but that was a one time event wins the last time you at a company say hey we want to bring jobs to your city and people said. Are not happening now. Nine there's a lot of people in New York that are screamed bloody murder there there is something here in this is to be symbolic of a he's a major major shift is. These are not big cities are figuring out that corporations are taken and I think we have to be careful with the language reason I think people are saying no we don't want companies coming in that are going to contribute in meaningful ways to our cities we don't want companies coming in that are just going to be exclusive we want companies that are doing common. And try to make things better be part of the community I think that is what is being said here and it's it's not they push back on the money ends don't think the money's really a problem. What you're seeing the push back on his people saying it note that this is just not what we want in in its big I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm saying. When you ever seen that before and what have you ever like. It's never gotten to appoint anybody seeing you know little protests and things I wonder or companies always still went forward with their putt and what change would happen in the 120 days in the ninety days from when they announced it now. Amazon misread the room. They misread the room as far as where public sentiment was with regards to their company. They figure that as long as people like getting things on the same day basis. That they could go and they wouldn't have any problem is people say oh ams on its good paying jobs they provide good services. And that's just not the case right now. There is a pot they let me in the rape and pillage they would they negotiated unbelievable would I don't even think they do. I'm so they're tax package is pretty genders but it was in the biggest when they could've done you know if you would just. Here's that here's what I find amazing. Literally across the river in New Jersey they got offered four billion more dollars and they turned it down now. They were they were trying to get the best tax pack actually that wasn't what was important and even you go down and look at the DC negotiations. DC the Virginia offer was about 500 million dollars. If you take a look at Maryland the Montgomery County offer. There was a five point eight billion dollar offer on tables almost twelve times is being and they said no it. The perception is that Amazon comes in in takes over does whatever they wanton. I don't know if that's accurate but that's the perception and the backlash on a personal level was strong enough. That Amazon said. We're not deal we're we're getting the hell out of here before you know this turns into a problem Tucker what is the perspective of Rick Newman he's gonna come on in the next segment and talk about it. There are pretty much a share his insight on the matter now. If because because what we're hearing in the headlines chuck is that the politicians killed. They didn't. I'd I don't think they did. I did. This this is a a seismic shift that is happening because and look you might about a couple politicians that are grandstanding on us that they do that and yeah I'm really cute it happens that I nature of being a politician. But if it wasn't for the actual community saying no we don't want this what why are politicians gonna. What if US politicians ever turn down a company coming into their city match. You know voluntarily he can you imagine how much money is being lost because the during the last six months there was a lot of people buying real steady it and buying up condos in that area. Oh yeah I look at the number of trends I had better if you look at the pricing action also some dots in the US stuff that instantly was going for 2030% more than it was the day before people never even walked in the property do you buying it online that they're buying expect you lovely saying look I'll buy this just rented out all these new workers. The chicken with a touch say all right well in the next segment Rick Newman from Yahoo! finance we'll hear share his perspective. All on the Amazon deal and there. Not going to New York City news right now it appears that they're not going anywhere that's our next topic on the financial exchange. Mean this stare at the charts graphs and numbers all day and just listen to us it's the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck sun up on the financial exchange radio network. As promised Rick Newman from Yahoo! finance joins us now to talk about Amazon canceling their plans to expand the second headquarters in New York City Rick thanks for joining us. I. Rick oh overall what's the sense you get from kind of talking to people at any kind of Reading you know what the major reasons were for Amazon pulling out of the steel. Think people are very surprised first of all the and not happen very often I mean you always like here you know controversy over. Some subsidy plan tax break and they are controversial but very and you go for it is because it sparked. You know there are people who opposed to Amazon to rival in New York on aunt and an end down there they are celebrating they think they want. A big victory on the other hand. Lot of other people are shot. New York in just waved it spotlights the 25000. Good job I paying jobs. I you know that would have produced a net revenue gained the new York and New York was not giving Amazon for money for nothing. It is a real lost if you're in the luckily New York is a very vibrant place and it will be fine but it'd it is a real lot to the city economically. I've been racking my brain for the last day trying to remember a situation where a company promised to move higher paying jobs to a city. And the city and its residents effectively said no way it do you have to have you seen this in the last 3040 years there any other examples you can point to of this. I can think of another example just like there. I mean there are legitimate questions about tax subsidies in this kind of our rate among city it just throw money at company. Media error in the rate at which you know you get to the point where you're giving subsidies. But he equate it you know like a million dollars per job which probably is is way up in jail. I I you know that I'm. On the list a indeed it was in it was considering four expect an headquarters. And you know that the ghost city there was there are a lot of opposition I know that in Pittsburgh for example my home town. And I heard from people I know there there's significant opposition to Amazon arriving. Partly for the Breeders' Cup partly because people. Worried that it you know traffic is gonna suddenly become horrendous there's not going to be in housing it'll just make housing prices go up for the people who. Don't work for the company so I you know there's little mr. discomfort about the thing but if you step back in the it is the job of it he managed as I think I mean that's what. Itty bit is. Yet you don't have an up housing you've you've you've changed the building standards you've created there and it's four. Developers degree heat in the bell housing means is that it is well. And to be the most dynamic city in the country and it is the day but we really don't wanna be bothered with it and a lot of itty falling behind. And I think into the need to be doing a better job I think attracting. Companies like Amazon and then he'd been Aaron is that. Talking with Rick Newman of Yahoo! finance Rick. You mentioned that looked at there's always opposition of some kind to me you know what when tax breaks like this are given given out. Usually it doesn't and the amounting to much. Do you read anything into the fact that Amazon is arguably one of the most powerful corporations on the planet. And they still couldn't figure out how to make this work was vetting issue. That's just because of how they went about this process or does it say something more about how companies are going to have to do business with cities going forward. I don't consider this would be speak for Amazon I think they're very crafty. And they created option out for themselves. That they are pretty clever about adding it has been remembered it the beginning that they were just gonna choose one city. And it actually chairs to read it though. Where the second headquarters between new York and wash in the city. And I also that the other thing what's been a lot of notice but instead are creating a new operations center in national and Boyle I like that. There's been enough right now and those New York City jobs and error now. I think him you know rate options for itself. I'd put back a little bit on the idea that Amazon is so powerful it can do whatever one's I don't I don't think that the case. And it has to abide by the law. You know I mean it it it doesn't think he did everything you they're now like everything Amazon touches turns to gold. You know there's the a that is eight a terrifically innovative company. Has completely changed real re a retailing and it but it is for the most part is very consumer friendly. I mean I am gonna become successful because it offers something about YouTube millions of consumers all around the world. And yet it managed the way you know company paid actors in the way. You know company operated corporate citizens of course media but I understood what their club in my camera on here in my opinion. Good Rick thanks for the time we will catch up these soon. I Rick Newman from Yahoo! finance stock met Amazon's each Q2 decision poured out of New York City but ultimately. This is capitalism at work right Amazon to saying OK and we need it to get hot in the kitchen. We're we're just gonna Paula and a a buddy of mine actually just text me on this issue Newton. Tucker what I say about a week ago on this puts it I believe it's a prediction on the board. And is managed to two yeah I don't think you had anything in New York I said that they would eventually end up staying in New York but without the money. And I'll double check on. I'm pretty sure and he texted the C I almost wonder. If Amazon still ends up there and just use this to say hey after going through this we decided we don't need the money. Why New York I mean it's the highest cost location other than it's. San Francisco because it offers them something that no one else can lie well it's the financial center of the world as I saw on the news on my news feed here and toward that there's an analyst doctors saying that this is a flat out bluff. On nine Amazon's part. And that they end up in New York. So on and off and we'll say. It's it's they could very well be playing games here. It is the bat in the last three months the public perception of this project it's it's all been anti and is. And you haven't seen this I I don't read and I don't Lotta protestors hold us approachable and a whole bunch of protests down and in New York City about specifically that Long Island City community. And to talk about stupid people what I mean you know I can kiss have you seen what happened to Seattle. Have you seen ignore can with Seattle no Q with the San Francisco this pushes middle class people out all cities and that's the so. I don't think they're necessarily misguided on that front but. What would be interesting is if Amazon says okay were pulled out and then comes back you know month later and saying hey we actually you know after discussions with the governor and with the mayor. We decide that we're still gonna move forward with this but not be accepting and tax breaks and an Amazon comes out looking like the hero. You have a you know all all m.s and asked do is say that insane by the way roles and investing half a billion dollars for affordable house outlets and they come out looking like a hero. In what that does it means that then they can do what they really want to do which is run their business how they want. Without anyone giving them crack. Yeah I mean look it would gee he's going through now with Boston rate date date promised Boston all these job to do in the end I was a small deal there they only promised 800 jobs yet another gonna deliver 250 jobs so there. Writing a check to the city. For eighty set or to the state for 87 million dollar I stand by what I said a couple weeks ago when when this first broke that they were again talking about you know reconsidering this. I said. Hey I think that you're going to end up seeing Amazon's staying there but not taking the money C I disagree it I don't think New York is the cat's meow for tech company. It's not funny it's not and it's not about being attacked company of the Amazon has bigger ambitions and we'll see we'll see markets are open and there in positive territory and never look a gift horse in the mouth. Time now for mostly watch a look at the market's performance so far today you until Barry and chug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Stocks are climbing that wall of worry the Dow was up 337. Point struck which I find. Curious given the fact that the ten year treasury note was yielding two point 66%. Yeah of CNET treasury selloff just a little bit today we are down I think in the hi two fives look to six is a few days ago. Terms sectors that are moving this market right now financials materials industrials and energy and your leaders today so it is a risk on day what's lacking. Exactly what he'd expectancy lagging in that kind of snare real estate telecoms utilities. Bringing up the rear as far as. What is really move in the dial today biggest movers in the S&P 500. A wrist network centric link in Moody's corporate big winners on the downside. To all brands FedEx corp and Hasbro. You're big losers in the S&P current. I think the Z news. And NASCAR dumb question pianist on questions I just see the the ten year treasury if the yields coming down that why would financials be rally. Yields up on today. I 66. And gets up Otis yeah a little bit of a sell off on treasuries today we're like 2592. 26 and earlier I think last week. And so you've got financials rally a little bit don't know what the specific reason is for that but you've got a little bit of a rally that's happening now at the moment there. Charlie Munger was interviewed this morning by Becky quick from CNBC. And he said. That California and Connecticut have been stupid for driving rich people away from their state. And Connecticut of course being very close ally. And we can look at that what's happened in Connecticut I mean you've just had an exodus. Of wealthy families leaving that state and saying you know we might still own a home here or certainly not gonna file taxes in Connecticut anymore. Yang Connecticut's overall income distribution is such a Barbell set up where you've got you know. A bunch of very wealthy people on the top end. And then a bunch and they're all down in Fairfield County yet on the west side of the state and then you've got a bunch of lower income folks throughout much of the rest the state is not the huge middle class that's left in Connecticut at this point. And so the problem is you're trying to get revenue for all the things Connecticut as promised to BO pay out and so for hours. You kinda have to unfortunately. Tax the rich are incredibly high levels because there is no middle class that you can tax in order to generate rep. BC evening Connecticut EC in Rhode Island EC in Massachusetts. EC in Maine you see in Vermont a lot of residents from those states. Simply pick up and say. Yeah we're gonna keep the cottage on the tape right where they will get you on the cape. 56 months a year yet but we are filing our tax returns. In Tennessee forward and file your tax return in Florida Rudy some other place other than. Kent than New England area. Yep it it's what you see in a lot of cases where I'm curious to see is as those other places start to get more heavily populated and so forth. If they start to run into the sort of problems were they have to start raising taxes in order to pay for him necessary services and things like give an example you know my parents live down in Durham, North Carolina where. There's not a huge city it's about a 100000 people right now but that whole triangle region where you've got Durham Raleigh and effort of the third Citi is down there Chapel Hill. That area is expected seen in flocks of of ballots. I think it's one and a half million people over the next decade until. And the problem is they're making the same mistakes that other cities have made previously were not investing in mass transit today silly there's no subways there's no rail system or anything like that. And so I sit there and say gee it's great going down there now is there's no traffic it's easy to get around but even just the last five years since they've moved down there. I've noticed the traffic's been getting worse and so how eventually have got to pay him you know for the things that they don't have to. But how much did cost of living in taxation have to do with your parents relocation. I'd say it was one of the two biggest pieces along with climate. Climate climate and cost of living more than two major reasons why they moved out of Massachusetts has. I do see it I I can tell you I've you know I've worked with retirees for. Close to forty years and it is not uncommon chance to see people say. Yeah we're we're we're relocating to Florida is is the most common but I've seen them go to Puerto Rico have seen people go to Arizona I've seen people retired Arkansas. North Carolina to get a South Carolina Georgia preferred. But they're getting out of these high cost states because. You know he might look at it and say well. Georgia has an income tax what's not as high as the New England streets. And then when you look at the property tax rates in Georgia they're considerably lower than in the prior and the cost of property. It'll consider. And in part of it in some of those towns cities and states. There's things that they do not have to deal with then that we deal with Libya for example if you are Georgia. Have to build a huge budget for snow removal Abbott that's a small OK but other things like that. When we talk about replacing roads and things. The winner and to hear that roads have in New England is dramatically higher because all the icing that you get in the freezing and expanding and contracting. You build a road in Florida now you pretty much never have to eat you can keep that thing out there for 2030 years because it doesn't have the same types of problems so. Part of this is because in those states are going to have lower cost because they don't have to deal with the same crap that we do. TI bigger a lot of people to tune in might each group in my peers that will relocate. Because of taxation. In Kosovo I I I agree completely I that is by the way our poll question today do you plan on relocating due to higher taxes. And I can tell him my wife and I've had this conversation will always have. New England roots will always maintain a home here yet but we're not in it as we retire. We're not gonna file our taxes here can promise you that. You're not alone yeah I mean it's just it's yeah it's too expensive. To live here you're not a diary. If you wanna participate in our poll you can go to our website financial exchange showed dot com I think New England is doing a wonderful job of chasing. Affluent retirees out of their states. And didn't big mistake this creates is you look at a state like Connecticut Massachusetts were not mean Rhode Island. Who are they chasing out whether chasing out people that are 67. The 75 years old. They're taken money out of their fire 401K plans and their diaries they don't have kids in the school system. The employ a lot of people write me the they hire landscaper they hire painters they go to the hospitals are used to doctor services they don't commit crimes. I mean these are good citizens. That are being chased out of New England. We're simply what's the reason for. A lot of it is financial sunk its climate noted and I don't know what's what's the reason that you think these states. Our movement what do you think the states have the high rates of taxation and high cost of living and so what and its legacy based start a brightly again the problem is. You look at today in Massachusetts is one I'm familiar with his. You look at their unfunded liabilities in terms of health care and pension costs. It's gonna take you guys and I say you guys discuss its younger generation's gonna have to deal this gonna take you thirty years to fix. We're you've got all these unfunded liability so when Charlie Baker goes does look in his budget he says crap tax revenues are down I guess I've got to raise taxes won't. In the problem in and here's the the other part part that I was gonna get that. Is because you've had this you know it is situation where middle class you know earning simply not kept up with the high end. UN of saying look we can't just raise taxes on ever want is if we raise taxes on the cost either gonna give voters out of office to begin with and beat. It's not gonna generate enough revenues the end of saying hey you know we're gonna raise these millionaire tax has also millionaires pick up and say. Group early Woodward academy your work. Millionaire normally we got millions of dollars we can pay to get out of the state it's rainy night take a loss on their house for a million dollars right when they sell it but they don't care causing a twenty million in the bank yeah it's it's all gravy to them now anyway financial exchange showed up comments where you go to participate in the poll north Texas I'd be curious to hear your thoughts 63566. Is our tech's number. We alluded to this earlier but GE is gonna sell their four point headquarters and give. EB seven million dollars back to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Yeah they're going to end you know this. I think a lot of people thought this was likely over the last few months is Larry Culp is coming is tried to clean up near the mess at GE. But then making it official yesterday Singapore going to be selling this this property. That they had balked. I think it was a couple years baton. And they were going to be putting it bartering three years ago yet they're going to be putting a 300000. Square foot. Tower on that site and so they're gonna be putting out up for bidding. I would imagine they're gonna have no trouble finding a bitter down in that area. Well it you know what's funny about real estate commercial real estate news. The demand is high. Until it's not you know like these builders will build out housing. And then on the last project when they realized they built up too much that last won't sits vacant for ten years yet they'll find something to do with this but there's still tunnel and developed down there now what the deer may be but is there the demand for the development. There is you think I think there is when we come back or take a look at wheat grower can it be growth. We have two big stories begin this hour of the show one has to do with Amazon and they're basically the tell in New York to shove it. And the second has to do the president saying that they insist China are going pretty well talks are going pretty well for whatever that means. Yeah that's direct quote from him actually is that yes talks are going very well and then he added whatever that means. He set that's you know ease as perplexed as as I have let's start off with the Amazon story because. Date they basically said thanks but no thanks you guys are make in our lives miserable lot of protests you don't want us I'm not come yes Amazon yesterday announcing that they are not going to be moving part of their headquarters to New York City. And so obviously this is something that I think even a couple weeks ago you know people. Wouldn't even guess could happen lastly our guys by surprise. Yeah yes yeah it did it did it just. When have you ever seen a company. This has secured a package to provide good paying jobs to a city just say no we're actually just knocked in a column C I was negative on the New York you from the beginning. From what perspective a new Long Island city's successful. I think that was kind of the reason they chose. New York just the York Kinect and the Long Island City these days is a lot nicer than it used to be. Yeah but it it's a nice recessed pools that list yours it's relatively nice now. Compared to. You go through like I have but it's imperative that area. It's pretty similar. Now. Actually which regardless I'm going to New York for big corporations to try to establish 25000 jobs I mean it's already. New York never goes into recession knee New York is all Wii's. A city that. Is booming you back the 1990s when the rest of the country it was a present in 2008. But it is it bounce straight back and Eagles look what happened to real estate values in Manhattan did not much right. Yes but I think part of that's the Fed in any case that began getting off topic lately Amazon not going to New York. We don't know where they are eighties supposes the F 25000 jobs at the go to Nashville Tennessee I don't know some of those jobs and come to Boston. I I don't know they might not go anywhere while. But he means eat the meat don't they need those workers if they needed in the New York why would they need them if they knock him. They might have decided they no longer than men. At any rate you know a lot of people lost money speculators. On girls they. Yeah that's why as you have to look at any of the stuff and there's there's risk associated with doing it if you say elegy Amazon's commitment by apple this real statement rent out Amazon employees and then. No way Amazon and please come out you're stone cold which looked at their worst place to be that holding about two real stayed on long on certain you know it's worked out pretty well over the last hundred years. It's just you're not gonna get the 20% higher rents that you thought you were gonna get like two years from and you may have paid 30% over market price to buy and now you can't sell that nobody wants no nobody wants. We also had a poll question today and had to do with where you going to retire and you know when you retired do you plan to relocate many of us live in high tax states New York is high tax state Connecticut. Is a very high tax state. Vermont Maine Rhode Island Massachusetts. All high tax states Florida. Interestingly a low tax paid a lot of people from New England. File their taxes in Florida one Fella texted me said Barry I saved enough on my income taxes. In order to pay the mortgage on my place and work. That Dino while Florida by the way wallet Kolb does say a survey every not a survey but they do analysis every year on the affordability from a tax perspective isn't on different states you. Do you have any states who wanna look at a particular may be. Tells with the Texas. Texas glitzy Texas is the 33. Highest tax burden at if any state suits in the bottom third of all aerials. Air resolve them. The is 31 after a lot of Californians than his Arizona Arizona is 31. What else do wanna look at a Georgia. Georgia is 36 so again on very little tax burden south Carolina's 39 in Florida Fortis 47 one of the five lowest states in the country as far as overall tax burden if you don't take a look at the major categories they look at. Property taxes individual income tax and sales and excise tax. Florida in terms of property tax who's gonna get this sorted so I can take a look. In terms of property taxes actually kinda middle of the road OK it's about. Now when you look at the overall it's it's right in the middle there. The individual income tax or has no state income tax notes one of seven states with no stating contender knows that chart doesn't tell you what people are paying for the wind insurance to their hurricane insurance it doesn't this just from a tax perspective you look at what they pay for insurance if they can get in Florida does make up the lack of an income tax they do have one of the fifteen highest sales taxes in the country. And so that does make up for it somewhat. But overall fuel to the total tax burden it still comes in as the fourth lowest the only states that are lower than Florida. Our tennis. Delaware. And. In Alaska usage staying trucks parents moved from Massachusetts. To North Carolina get their retired. In my parents moved from New York to Arizona when they're retired. I plan to move from Massachusetts when I retire haven't decided exactly where I'm going yet. But I don't plan to file my tax return here once I'm retired the interesting thing as much of a bad rep as Massachusetts gets from a tax perspective in the overall tax burden is only the eighteenth highest in the country actually. Now the highest ones okay whole bunch new in the states coming here knew you Martin is number one. Maine is number three and Vermont's number four. Connecticut's number six Rhode island's number 7 am new Jersey's number not like you go down the list a whole bunch of all the northeast so Massachusetts despite the tax cheuse Monica Patten. It's not off it's not taxes that actually add you know so much there consciously overall cost of living is ridiculously high as well. You participate in our poll by visiting our website financial exchange showed dot com do you plan on relocating to a higher. Due to higher taxes do you plan on relocating due to higher taxes I voted on and I said yes I plan on relocating its or retire. You can also Texas the other thought on that topic or text number 63566. A rumor is stirring that Adam silver is being recruited. By NFL owners to take over Roger Goodell is Johnson would they do fire rather ride to the doctor. That would be either fire him or his contract is up Ian I believe December 20/20 twos about two years from now two and a half years from now. And they could always just say hey once that's done they add money come over here and work for us I'd be willing to guess that Bob Kraft has his fingers alone. If I war Adam. I stick right where I am he's done a nice job I think even numbers I think the NFL is a lead on. You know on the decliner plateauing and I think the NBA is a league it has all kinds of room to Ron yes. And all the NFL viewership numbers are believed the NFL viewership numbers are great vacate there isn't basketball fraction of of the best basketball a lot smaller if you look in the US. The international side of basketball is Hugh is its massive and Adam silver had a big you know big hand in making it that way and the other thing the NFL I think has a real long term problem. With the fact that no one wants their kids playing football anymore. The Al that could be an issue they I looked at like the NBA doesn't you know caused you know people forget who they are. The in terms of the NBA league revenues. They've gone from four point eight billion. To nine point one billion under Adam silver like me in five years he's he's absolutely killing so what's he doing right what what makes him would give him the Midas touch. He understands unlike the NFL I think is getting a little better on this now they'll give you an example. If you used to go on to Twitter news and post a highlight from an NFL game. Not only would that tweet be taken down but a lot of times your count would be suspended and the NBA on the other hand says in silver's come out and directly said this the NBA what you post whatever you want as far as game highlights because they said look. If your posting all the stuff that's just how exciting are right is. Eventually someone's gonna wanna tune in for the whole thing go with a weight so overlooks I says look all that Twitter stuff those are little snacks we give those to you eventually you're gonna wanna come home for the meal. And that's the actual game you're gonna watch he's been really when it comes to marketing the game on line. Team valuations. Under Adam silver have increased by 267%. From an average of 509. Million per franchise struck in 2013. To one point nine billion today. The latest Forbes magazine valuations. Yep and in if you look by the way at the NFL as a comparison just because. Curious I was like OK I can do you know the NFL over the last near their will those teams are worth at least two billion so that they're contends and the team they're continuing to grow as well okay. But the big thing that I looked at it as an OK you know what's what's the overall revenue of the NFL. And it's growing but it's not grown at the same rate and it's an overall I was. The overall revenue I think on the pulpit and we see 520 yet becoming just have 2017. Right now in but I'm just checking. So the if it has NBA is nine point one billion that's up from four point 8000000005 years. Yeah apps the NFL each of the week's 32 teams took in 255. Million suit that was just the team's. Fourteen billion dollars okay is the NFL that's up from 9000000005. Years prior so we NFL grew by about 50% over that five year period now. The NBA owners don't. Do you think CBS will renew with the NFL their contract up and a couple of years gathered in. But like movies Ali without competition make light like the NFL's gonna take the highest bidder why wouldn't Disney. Outbid CBS the Disney already has the NFL they've got the ESP and yeah if they wanted to get the Sunday afternoon. They don't want now. That along when. Basically they've they've they've dove desire for it it's just that it's never been part of their platform. They switch from the Sunday night game to the Monday night game but anyway if Amazon decides it. This only games via. And it'll take and not as exclusive deal daisies to be in basic cable yet there they won't take it is an exclusive deal and as I goodbyes he. CBS what fifty billion in zones get no desired about where they gonna get fifty billion dollars by CBS is about apple. And the combined legacy media privately you know wise because they're garb you know it's I just don't see it so. I think you're gonna continue to see it it's going to be on the broadcast networks to that's with the NFL one. They want to have via the Thursday in the Sunday in the Monday night games yet you could toss those on premium you know products to the NFL use those premium games and put there. Their platform for distribution at this point is still going to be. You the basic broadcast networks for the foreseeable future text for you check out of the 97 eights are the NBA product has gotten better. The NFL Pryor has gotten worse agree. The BM and L is pretty good this past season it was but the NBA I'll give you example I can put on an NBA game and be entertained even if I had no idea about what was going on before hand. The NFL you can't necessarily just salient this'll be like you don't know what you're getting into one on a given day YE YE feel that way about the and there is there's more and it's not more talent necessarily but because there's only five players on the court at any one time if you have one good player. It'll keep you win games and so when general there's enough talent so you have one good player on every team Suzuki really the most authority of the game's close you just have a lot of talent across different teams where's the NFL. The how many teams were there that you wouldn't wanna watch at Ole knee in the last year there's a whole one. Where's the NBA say candle wanna watch you know the knicks. I don't wanna Lecavalier and you take a handful but the end the NFL university say. Why the heck why wanna watch Arizona Cardinals wanna I wanna watch Miami golf the Buffalo Bills would like this there's a lot of bad an average teams the end no BA doesn't have that. It's just much more competitive. Because it's it's not a one position driven league the NFL if you don't have quarterback unscrupulous sixteen playoff teams to earn. Yet you get more playoff teams have more teams have a chance to make the playoffs. And I think has more star power in the NBA to death that they just they do a really good job managing the product right now like. I go through the NFL and thank you look at these teams. Dolphins bills jets. You wanna watch any of those AFC title for the patriots Broncos and raiders don't wanna watch those the browns were kind of interest in even though they were average is here to the Bengals are awful. The jaguars were terrible this year. The giants like. He's you just beat the patriots hooted jags. In the Super Bowl you know the beginning when yeah they're Super Bowl as the second game of the season and I know that. But he you know you go through it's like the giants the 49ers the cardinals the Packers the lions. The book and like there's just so many bad and averaged half the year ago whereas you get the NBA and you make there's like five or six bad ones and and everyone else watchable. Fifteen point two million people had the flu this season through February 2 and the season hasn't peaked at you know I I don't know it's still the case or not but I looked. At some CDC charts in terms of months of the year with the highest highest death rate then used to be march on Arnold it's. If you do you know how the food travels actually geographically. Actually fascinating if you look at like how the flu that the path of in the vector politics so the food that we get in the winter actually typically starts in the Southern Hemisphere just his it's usually winters there. And so what happens then. Is it usually ends up the first place that it strikes in the US is usually on the West Coast usually California and Arizona not Florida no and then it migrates kind of diagonally northeast and so skipped four. No it it just north and east so kind of goes neo. This and that I guess depending on which we or does it at work while it's my hope we get the same strange that they get typically. But the strange that you get a typically determined by. What is a major problem in the Southern Hemisphere in the summer before flu season and that's how scientists who build near the vaccines try to say okay here's the ones that we think we're gonna see this year because they did a good job this year it's based on what's been prevalent in the Southern Hemisphere over the previous few months did they do a good job this year yet the last generally had real trouble with. So far this season people who were vaccinated. Reduce their chance of visiting a doctor for the flu. By 47%. Compared with people who were not vaccinated. Among children under eighteen that percentage is 61%. That compares with 40% for all people children and adults for the entire 201720. Eighteens and so. Markedly better 40% John. Vs 47%. Yes good they may mean it like. If you improved your batting average by that much though we he'd be in the hall pain oh yeah is that that's that's. With just an interview at the flu. One as Ted. I folks this is Mike Armstrong and I'm joined by estate planning attorney Todd lets you with your financial exchange quick tip of the day. They were talking about the differences between revote Kabul and Erie vocal trusts are taught you what is the biggest difference between a revote Kabul verses and durable global trust. You know this is probably the most frequently asked question that that I'd get here richer people just wanna know that and there are really a lot of differences but what I'm gonna do is to tell you what we're talking about the differences between a Medicaid irrevocable trust has folks there's so many kinds of irrevocable trusts out there I want to be clear that this is those income only Medicaid. Irrevocable trusts that are designed to protect assets from the owners now verses. Eight re vocal bull family type trust. The biggest difference between the two is that the revoke oval trust will never protect assets from the nursing a five years ten years doesn't matter how long your assets current. But with an irrevocable trust after the assets have been put in there for five years. Then they will be protected from the cost of long term care that's really the difference what let's haired pain attorney to draft Michael trust that you re vote cannot just go and have them change it to and you're vulnerable trust so many people love to do that you could but no. You actually have to start over. The language of the trust itself is key. In making it protected from the nursing homes so you can't just make the word re comfortable irrevocable and the odd isn't there not so easy but that's the big difference lies control wise I think you're still. About the same. Excellent while the state planning experts accretion and don't have written a brand new guys that answer the most common questions that you have about the differences between revote Kabul and irrevocable trusts you can press has brand new guy by calling 8668485699. However folks if you wanna download the guide today just as it legal exchange showed dot com. Once again if you want to guide paper though give us a call 866848569. You might not be able to keep up with all the latest business and finance news but we can't fix the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chunks not a on the financial exchange radio network. So trivial last segment and we got a we got a winner on a bearing you know we got a winner on. The how many people bought all the way more than yesterday's press president trivia. That's a fact now yeah we I can't question as to fat okay check back you know Covert I think we got somewhere in the ballpark of 45 answers yes it was like for. So the I'm just saying the question was in the movie starship troopers what is the name of the unit that Johnny Rico joins after the battle of conduct in the correct answer is the rough necks who Johnny Rico eventually command as a Rico's rock acts should not be right. And the winner on this question was Jim from Quincy sued Jim knows his scifi action movies and takes only fifty dollar gas card as a result proving that knowing don't side by trivia. Can pale. Let's talk about something a little more compelling in that would be logistics and a dart about like Percival mail and package delivery logistics so. Five years ago chuck if I looked at the major players in that business I would've said UPS number one. FedEx number two US Postal Service number three Democrat. Today it's all upside down now at all out of nowhere. I mean. In what may be an eighteen month purity time Amazon is taken over the quality discs. Yet they they're really trying to take a lot more of this in house boasting to both in terms of the long distance transport they've bought a whole bunch at least a whole bunch of planes in order to fly goods around the country. They've got to hold big be a big rig apparatus that set up where their BO delight in part won't call you define this electric truck company you're investing in this electric come what. Truck company with GM well they've also been funding local contractors who are doing last mile delivery. And this is fascinating is a whit what I've been waiting for a big. The wall that Amazon will hit one day is unionization think they hit it in Germany Germany. The unions in Germany year considerably stronger than those in the United States and the Germans just put that. As swollen it sure seems like part of the reason that they are moving towards this independent contractor model for last mile delivery. Is to avoid a unionization prop. And so what you scenes over the last five years Amazon's overall shipping costs. Have grown significantly as a percentage of their revenue in the reason wise they're trying to deliver more packages in a shorter frame of time and if they were still just trying to deliver everything over three to five day period. Pick probably actually of lower cost than they did five years ago. Instead they're trying to move towards same day delivery in more markets to what that means is that their overall. Cost of shipping is gone from under 11% of revenue almost fourteen. And my question is how Long Will debut contain those costs how long before. The Amazon independent contractor. Why dozens up and says gee I'm work in here and I'm deliver packages and beaten the heck out of my car for twelve bucks an hour. And if I worked for UPS and beat me in you know forty bucks and our equipment benefits. I think Amazon's going to be able to control these costs for awhile but don't they need workers to control the costs ate it and they. We we talked repeatedly about worker shortages and strikes and not enough people to do believe they do but in that business now how dominant Amazon is they control so much of the market that. It it it's just easy making use the game economy The Who were tight economy. And attract workers. One other and they're not trying to do that that's not how their independent contractors are sent off while they're at I'm talking about the ones where their funding. They're giving people hundreds of thousands of dollars to store local companies. To deliver packages they did not giving them hundreds of thousands dollars or look there are no they are they're giving them money to buy trucks there they're providing them with the vehicles they don't write a check if I worked for Amazon. So that ignorant checked Barry Armstrong for three and program but they will. That there are literally giving people money to buy vehicles. So I just one error that's where they're higher it it is not like they're just hiring any schmuck off the street. Meet the they're very selective in their hiring yet recruit you know their recruiting. These guys are used to work for the Postal Service as he used to be up for FedEx and guys used to work for. For for UPS or. I think the big thing is look with with UPS and FedEx there's a profit margin expectation built in the with Amazon's transportation snuff if they bring their own you know they bring all of there. Planes in house. You don't have to make a profit on that. You know so it's it's say if we can save 3% year for present there 5% here that's what they're going to words when it's all said and done. That they go want chuck to say. We expect our equipment sales increased by 7% next year yes that they're seeing good sales growth the big thing is there are also seeing margin compression because of this higher input costs as they mention. An interest in thought as I was coming into work this morning on this. So. We've seen a number of Mekong billions. What's that they make good law tractor on how I don't have quite a big enough yard to be able to use one I just aids in this. It's also little too hilly I think I don't know if you'd be able to hand out. And options on bill it's always an option. So here's the thought that I had is. All these companies are saying these inflationary pressures and everything right now. The US dollar over the last year is up about 7% so you get a stronger dollar. You have a world economy that's showing significant signs of slowing in Europe in China and a and you're still seeing inflation being mentioned by all these different companies right now. So you're seeing inflation running at 2.2 percent when you've got a significantly stronger dollar in a weakening global economy. What happens when the tide turns there. And the dollar doesn't get stronger. What happens if the dollar stays flatter weakens and all of a sudden you know he starts the new growth you know coming in China and in Europe at some point of view geno a year 23 years from now. What is inflation look like in that environment I don't know like I worry fire or John Deere I'd be worried about wage inflation. I agree I I think anything. I think in general you know the the inflation Stewart is I was I was looking Hannity and I was again coming back to you urban environment right now. Where there really shouldn't be any inflation. So. You've now got hot you've economy in the US has been in the US but the jet dumped and you're not talking about the US all the elderly citizens in China and overseas. So you have you know he's slowing global economy didn't. Where you have a stronger US dollar and you're talking about inflationary pressures hitting you in this environment. Scatters stuff like it's if it's something that I think I just I continue to think that we're gonna see something stronger there. Coming up we're going to be talking about diet soda do you drink. Oh Monica from CNN business joins us now. Talk about today what maker that's been struggling in recent years. But but it turned it around a little bit now Paul thanks for joining us you know also we're talking about Mattel and this is a company that. You know is kind of got an in opposite direction from the other big toymaker Hasbro over the last five years what's been the reason for that longer term decline for them. Guy I think you know now we're BUS companies that you know pulled one everything out or was it lost that the it is not. He's the you know franchising and licensing agreement to add herbs and that is one thing that hurt you had a lot of management turmoil. At the company and I think you know picture why aid to make that on you know digital interactive toy that happened. Really panned out as well that the new management team is just focusing on. Those core brands the classic brands like Barbie op and that seems to be paying off. It is is that why we've seen the stock doubles so far and granted was a very short time period the the last six weeks but the stocks almost doubled. Since the start of the year is it just investors getting a sense after their quarterly earnings and hate their starting it'll traction in those brands. Yet that really is you know of the case when you looked at how well. Mattel gave you know during the holidays. And match Barbie sales were 12%. Has hot wheels sales were up time. There's that that is something I think the company recognized they. You know they've read we don't necessarily need to be. Trying to on you know these two ways tracked. In the long run you probably do but you know decline the birth rates been it's not something where you're seeing a dramatic dip from one year to next has a long slow decline that you've seen it is that you week you're seeing two truck though is it's the the middle class. In the upped the affluent are having very few children need and most of the children that are being born are lower cost. Yeah a little income you are is a look at demographics is kind of a long way phenomenon this is more BO if you're talking about sales quarter to quarter you're a year. I'm more short wave one to. More bad news for diet soda lovers this according to CNN drinking two or more war. Of any kind of artificially. Sweetened drinks a day. Is linked to an increased risk of clot big east strokes heart attacks and early death in women over fifty this according to a new study. By the American Heart Association in the American stroke association. We feel good about treating these things. Heat the study 80000. Postmenopausal. Their health outcomes were tracked for an average of eleven point nine years this wasn't a one. This is a pretty detailed study after controlling for lifestyle factors track. The study found that women. Who consumed two or more artificially sweetened beverages each day. We're 31%. More likely to have a clot. Based stroke. 29%. More likely to have heart disease and 16%. More likely to die from any cause then. Women who drank diet beverages less than once a week or not I mean if there's an it if if that isn't evidence that diet soda is points. And witness. China seeks to woo the United States with the promise of big chip purchases with to solve this is part of the negotiations alias were in. They're not talking potato chips and there's no no talking computer yen in what they're talking about here is. Effectively. They are trying to promise that they're going to make big purchases of US semiconductors. And other manufacture you know they want they want them to be manufactured in China. No it put it. Did he super exactly so it it's just. I continue to come back to the point that. What China wants and what the US wants are inherently not compatible with you with the gentlemen trying to put together. A deal that addresses these concerns. And so what you might get promises from China to buy more US soybeans and make you promises from China to buy more oil than but it doesn't address the underlying issues. The China wants to continue to have these forced technology transfers in place they continue want. To be able to Reno really control intellectual property of the governmental level in their country. And that's not changing any time soon day it does seem like years these talks are a waste of time you know when you think about the they where they're gonna end up. I think you'll be some kind of an agreement these the president keeps alluding to that. But it's kinda has to be at this point SCSI a really bad deal for us. Well I don't know if it's going to be a bad I think we might end up mark my words because I'll be dead time there I'll be retired certainly by the time this as a result. But I figured a look back at the deal being negotiated in 2019 and say we were better off with the deal we had twenty. I don't I don't necessarily say that now know why I think you can still get incremental progress but incremental progress doesn't solve the problem. You know it it's just look I think you'd still might and a better than nothing. But I don't think that we're going to get anywhere near meaningful progress when it's all said and done on this now. It's a shame it's shame me I think we're we're wasting an opportunity here more every day eat I should I should stop reading Steve ban. You think it's wasting an opera to I think it's there's not really an opportunity there. I don't think there is one you just think it where. Going to be a trade war for China for the next thirty years what what incentive is there for China to do anything else. There's certainly no incentive for us to do there's there's none it is it is a game of chicken and those are not games that are resolved simply by negotiation.
