Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks done us. We begin our show today with a discussion of two very large banks that are going to emerge. But then we follow it right up with a story about burritos that doesn't get any better than that thanks in burritos banks and burritos hi everybody it's very truck with you here. It is a chilly. Thursday morning. And this bank merger between suntrust and BB&T. I think shock might be the tip of the super. In terms of what we're gonna see. In terms of bank consolidation. You think there's more this coming I think you're gonna see a whole lot more I think your your bank's. You know you think about your regional banks right years they'd better around the area. I think he. Find it very difficult to compete with these toward financial institutions so what would it when you talk about something like a regional bank would you be looking at something. Traffic likely to citizens or something like that citizens certainly is in play they've been for sale for years to stay that RBS still owns a big chunk of them right they wanted me and they wanna be sole. The another one thing about your Rockland trust rate than you think you think about. Any especially a publicly traded bank. That is in controlled by one actually looks like RBS sold their last week in October 2015 Susan's been fully on their own since then. And and yet if you go down the list of kinda where these banks ranked just in terms of the largest banks in the country prior to this merger BB NT was the sixteenth biggest bank in the country suntrust with the seventeenth. Other banks that are around that size two to give your perspective in terms of kind of what fits in there. Back new York Mellon is a little bit larger. State Street. Ally financial and citizens number 2.3 of their right in the air BMO Harris. Fifth Third Bank KeyCorp. Northern Trust. Is it that trouble and those those types of banks yet in the troubled year and had if you're number 25 on that list. How do you compete with Bank of America when it comes to regulatory costs and technology and that's the big things so let's let's take these two banks on trusting BB NT combined you can have about 430 billion dollars worth of assets which they went out to be the sixth biggest bank in the country now. The two biggest ones Bank of America and JPMorgan Trace had JPMorgan Chase have north of 2.3 trillion dollars. In essence of the still six and seven times the size. All of this this new merged bank here. And even you talk about some of the ones that are you know just a little bit bigger in of the foreign 512 Wells Fargo. And Goldman Sachs Wells Fargo has almost two trillion dollars in deposits Goldman Sachs is a bill and one trillion dollars in deposits and you'll see banks like Goldman Sachs needs a retail dance partner I think. They've been trying to make inroads with their that their markets are offering over the last couple years trying to get people in with pretty much what they've been doing is the same same approach that Capital One's been using which is hey we're gonna offer really hide deposit rates. Four customers come in their their savings rates are thicker around two to two and a half percent to do it electronically as opposed through branch network that's what Coleman's trying to do I don't know how much success they've had with that they've been trying to make inroads into retail recently. But that could be a company that says look eventually we just need to get more scale there maybe they do by someone up who has a little bit smaller. This does tell you that the branches are gonna survive he has been a lot of speculation over the years you don't use a brink bank branch very often. I don't use when burial I don't go to an ATM. How often even need cash. I went and the a bank branch on Tuesday because we're trying to yell outside broke that's the only reason I knew it that's it now. There you'll ever dry cleaner anyone in their by mistake. Yeah I think it's gonna be similar to what we've seen with malls where. You're gonna have 25 to 30%. Of them and the closing just because you don't need the same level of branches that use the Unita same concentration. But the ones that do continue to exist in you're gonna need them for against things like what talkers talked about union. If you need to go and talk to someone about a home equity line something like that you could do. News in the bank to use when it opened up things like UPS store FedEx store within the brain. Get the business consumer coming in yeah I mean you seem a temporal ones but Dolan paid just straight out at a cafe there. If joint business with them and find but otherwise it's coffee shop now the indeed these got to be some other mechanism because you don't need. I mean most banks if you ask the managers say we are operating with anywhere from. Thirty to 40% as many tellers as we used to have twenty years and yet and it in some kind of combination like that could make sense you know I don't know exactly what is whether it's UPS store. Starbucks. Yes -- I almost wonder if you just you know attached you know bank branches to pharmacies and things like that some knew something BC bank branches in a lot of growth for story straight that's not yet come citizens it is you know and Stop & Shop and Aaron and yeah. It's something where if I like the idea of the UPS store because. That gets the business person. Lot of business a small business owners use that UPS dep Sosa I can do something like that make any sense I in my opinion. This is the beginning of what will be many mergers and what's unusual about that struck. Is I'm looking at both of their stocks. BB&T stock is up to almost 3%. And suntrust is up almost 9%. That's unusual often times when you see. A bank being acquired the acquiring bank will go down in price in the acquired bank Google up. Means that analysts think of this is a pretty good deal when it's all said and on price bills we wasn't it wasn't an overpriced deal based on you know what they thought the premium could have been. And you know the company that's buying on. Is necessarily gonna be overburdened it's also an all stock deal was no cash changing hands on this if you look at the map well. Branches. Of both companies out the east. Boy I'll tell you what it. The they're going to be seasonal jobs southeast gets Internet to divest of law practice ET it's big overlap when you talk about where they arc is pretty much both of these go from the kind of the Washington DC region down through the southeast in the Sunbelt maybe they'll buy citizens. Just get a little bit foot hold up this one picture could be a citizen says pretty good brand appear probably a couple years to go for the do that just because you don't wanna get to -- of with with what you're doing with the company. But I I could see something like that happening you know continue to be operated out of the Carolina straighter down in North Carolina the other going to be based out of Charlotte so the not going to be you know moving you know any anything significant from that perspective Vista and have big operations in Winston-Salem and Atlanta is well any regulatory problems here in difficulty mr. now no problem at all. It parlor workers. They are in in I'd I don't deny that the of that that a little harder to deal that's not happening as it's kind of the nature of the beast when you see these mergers. But again talking about their size compared some the other ones that are out there. They're six this size of Bank of America you know it regulators argued if you've regulators look at this they got to look at Bank of America and they're not doing that and times. It would de La they put the regulators or the put together bacon here's countrywide have some facets take Merrill Lynch to go forward to for one deal big Washington Mutual to do in there is that JPMorgan took might be my gun yet they got Washington Mutual's that this credit. Cleanup on aisle five favorite and not that ran up the score. They EI. Talking about vote. Well I don't know I do saintly effectively but we're gonna talk about chipotle they are back they had a food scare a few years ago. And nobody wanted to shop at Tripoli they brought in their CEO from taco bells and yet. It's the former CEO of Taco Bell Steve Bell's. And he came on I think it was about a year ago now it was somewhere right around this time. Whom received when he when he start up the F February 13 2018 and ups are. Brian Nichols is the CEO Steve Phillips the former one so. Give me your I have been. Tripoli and quite awhile you guys are pretty regular consumers haven't been a year afternoon. Really what happened. I don't go out there right around the rhetoric on the court agua from launching. Lois are mean office manager will buy me to bow that's the wrong thing to say you're getting something bad for launch next I think I only one word absolutely. You are getting something bad from what is next week YouTube don't do no that's not good. It's not in this case you are quite literally biting the hand that feed. You and men anyway same store sales. Up point 4% forecasting that they're gonna continue to grow margins are state I mean when you look at it. Sales were up 10%. Operating margin improved chucked it 17%. From fourteen point 9% now I know that's not an apple tight margin but in the food business. Oh that is enormous wide anymore margins in the food business you are we talking mid to low single digits 345%. Somewhere in that ballpark so to polish stocks up about 14%. Today now. By the way this company in the last year since Brian Nichols took over in the stock price is more than dealt. Got to sixty to 72 it's 597. Right now up 71 dollars and 55 cents for the day you can open a 140. New locations this year. Yet it's keep in mind this is a stock that is trading. Expensively. At the moment when you look at the PE ratio price to earnings ratio honest about 96 times earnings so. This is not a stock that is priced cheaply. A big reason for the growth is just because you know there's the growth in the stock prices the people are looking at this company saying. Hey you know a bit theirs they're on that growth train again but if that growth trained you know down there's room to fall for this poppy you guys are their target market numbers of the little surprise you've been their year pro quo and go anywhere from launch anymore you know it's it's I mean I've kind of an up on that because I got cheap. It has really nothing register poll lay for most army mile launch now to. That's all and that's all you're good you guys are growing data were growing up that's what happens again broaden yeah. And freedom it's. A and that'll make you broke. A prominent Republicans wants to pay. Student loan payments directly out of your paycheck I think this is the best idea since. I hated. Okay what are both of these state your case that'll be the arbiter I'll tell you why I'll stay Al stay neutral for awhile and I'll take the best of both you decisions and say what I think in my observation. Eight in my many years on this plan. People tend to treat student loans as an optional repayment program. They don't take it seriously because nothing bad really happens other than your credit score instinct if you don't make national pain Oakland. And with sex senator Lamar Alexander is suggesting he's from Tennessee. Is that when you gradually and you take that first job in your make and 405060000. Bucks a year when you graduate from college. It automatically. Just like pica just like federal income tax just like health insurance. Your student loan payment is going to be deducted. From your paycheck and it's not going to be treated is optional anymore I like the idea because. In buying it again in my observation. Lot of people not just your generation to previous generations as well have not taken that student loan payments are. Tucker counterpoint I just think that everybody's situation is different in terms of the student loan payments. You know one of my buddies is 101000 books months though is that gonna come out as paycheck now the only direct I don't like that one because there's different ways to refinance and budget. And I think I don't think so drastic of a change you you would still have that available as an option he could still refinance. Your payment might actually be lower than a thousand dollars a month I just capped at 10% and it just like what else can we take cover patriarch. Well Gatti went what else they come on let me ask you this talk now have you got any friends who have student loans that are delinquent no friends all day. Look at and you say. Jeter they're driving a pretty nice car they're going out to rest for now no. And and economic in the student loan payments now you don't have any for an no. I have responsible friends who know al-Qaeda budget and can make there'll his payments so I've seen a lot of people. It over the years including people who worked here and company. It is said and I'm I'm not make him a student loan payment but they're taken vacations and injury you know and I've I've observed. And and and that drives me crazy because when they don't make their student loan payment. That means unique student never like you said it significantly dings their credit score if they don't make those payments of people and that's another way to build. Credit and that's a great way to your credit score right through loan payments right automatically deducted from your pitcher. Boat went back and jobless if it's automatically detect from paycheck and how second affect your credit score it'll improve. Is your make your payment she Tucker a lot of people don't have. The honesty you were treat your mother father did a good job raising you treat your financial obligations seriously they say welcome. The but a lot of people don't have. Right that you you you've done it you check if you not seen anybody. Delinquent in the student loan. And I've seen a couple people including one in the last. Couple months actually that they've kind of ran into some problems there. I I do have some thoughts on this to do we want a break yells yeah. Com hi everybody it's very are struck from the financial exchange and I'm joined by Jake to Lee who's the executive vice president. Leader bank were talking about SBA loans you know we hear a lot about SBA loans small business loans Jack. But I don't think people really understand. How they can be used and why they're so valuable to the small business community. Thanks very yet we have been really focused on providing small business lending to local community and local business owners. And the programs that are available power very helpful so we are preferred as be under the what that means is that. We can quickly make decisions and under rates small business loans in house. Andy can be used for right purposes for small business owners give us an example. Well one example that recently happened was there was a restaurant in Cambridge when I was growing very rapidly they are always full occupancy. And the space next order then became available and so they wanted to. Take on that space needs capital to sort build out. The restaurant. And you know was about a 300000 dollar loan. About it how many years did have to pay it back typically these types of loans vary anywhere between five to ten years lots of time. So you know we were able to quickly make that. Underwriting decision provide in the capital expanded that rexrodt has grown tremendously them as just wanted one of many examples in what they're landscaper or. Professional services unit loan officers that are available to blog talked a small businesses we have dedicated small business lenders. So we're having a discussion as it relates to student loan payments. What is the number. 500 billion that's the when Anderson some absurd amount where people just say I'm not payment student loans. 617 rights into the show owner Tex point 6356. Sixes or text number. Bury my wife cosigned our youngest daughter student loans and regrets it all the time she constantly has to remind her to pay the bill. That's from her friend. 603. Says student loans that come out your paycheck sounds great to me may be an option could be an employer match also. There that's it. That really intrigued and I talked well I think that. Tucker if it was coming out of your employee's paycheck right let's say it's the 10% number need an employee that's making. 40000 dollars a year fresh out of college I had. Sets but 300 bucks a month. And then the employer says G in there could be some kind of a tax incentive the employer gets a deduction for for the dollar amount in the employee does that pay taxes on something that. What a great recruiting tool. Yes so. In general here are are my thoughts on us I think it makes a lot of sense just because I like things that tend to automate things for people so they don't have to think about them things like retirement say when people have it automatically deducted from California Jack thank you and I like that because they don't have to think OGA need to put money in this month so I I like that from. Just a basic operational perspective. I do think there needs to be. Some kind of minimum built in where. You know if you're making below a certain threshold then you ought to have you know some kind of hardship waivers or something like that just because music he's got that in his so I think something like that make sense. I want the ability for people to contribute more to it if they want to do the play just like 41 K bees and wanna bump up my contributions you can do that. One question that I do have. Why are we talked about doing this with a student loans. What does worry what do you think it's credit card when we wanted her car payments mortgages things like you know I unit that's kind of my thoughts is like it's or pearl kennel warms well here's the here's the issue. Car loans talker are not nearly as delinquent student loan payments. You look at the delinquency rates on student loan payments it's absurd and you look. I guess my might be the only point of hesitation that I have on this is that when you do this but don't do it further loans you in effect saying. This is the loan that you have to pay first current. And it and it that I guess is he's been weight people tend to treat their car loans seriously. Because if they don't the card it's repossessed if you don't pay your mortgage get thrown out here house. Still zoologist there's no repercussions what they just taken all the way. As it has all the knowledge out of your bed if you don't pay it also exists though tucked. They that is the problem people big there don't think there's dual payments they got a credit score 550 so I don't care. But the other the is the real issue that I do have put this in again I I think it's an improvement over what we have today. But it doesn't address the key problem which is why to people level we student loans to begin with. Well. I think so it's like it's it's it's pretty much saying okay we're going from me you know using leaches to treat people to using band aids but it doesn't address the fact that why are they getting cut to begin. Let's just Jerusalem and not call today to forgive them all right ray oh start over. Well I I don't know I I I I I think our audience tends to group 70%. 69 point 2% audience thing. That student loan payments should be taken out here politics. Mean I guess it's a lot and you could you can disclose it up front. And there on the line for the student loan you have the parent synar prop. The people that are typically defaulting. Or ones with good jobs to begin with like if you look at who default sign student loans to people that go to air it'll it's the notes that people don't go to for profit colleges like that those air schools a for profit. So it's it's they don't the people who tend to and so if you're not making much money it doesn't really change much and all of does that another impediment to people who are already being responsible. Who don't necessarily need so. I don't know if it addresses the key problem I like it is may be an optional thing where employers can offered I don't know if I wanna make it mandatory to have moved speaks is the real problem. And I'm I'm I'm in the mandatory camp but. We'll see pay when we come back are we talking about Twitter will take a look at Wall Street which is down today but hey heck that could change in the next five minutes. Near their earnings guidance being weaker than expected there off about 9% at the moments of their struggling. On a sector by sector basis the worst performing sector today's energy off about. Point 85% best performing real state utilities. So little bit of a block to safety. Perhaps related to us and we data that we got out of Europe over the overnight. Told uses its perpetual arrest I say this as an Italian. I don't know how anything gets done in in Italy is just like it it's just perpetually. Crisis after cry. It seems that's a good description. Two stocks that are upper BB NT and a centrist New York there but we're going to rally both up on the anticipation of that merger. That was announced overnight coming to fruition. What do you make of this story MGM Springfield is gonna take over the management of some to symphony hall. So I'm not sure what to think about this to be honest that they're going to be taking us over. By march 1 that's that's when this'll start so you'd think he'd be better and right. From what perspective. They're just being experienced in the entertainment field maybe they get more performers there yet and they might have more relationships worldwide to be able to get people in on two wars and things like I would think because they can say well look if you come to Springfield. Right and do a week's worth of shows are even on weekends or shows will book you and things. Yep and in a gym Springfield ARD managed the mass mutual center which in Springfield as well which I believe is significantly larger and note that gossiping hauls about 2600 seats the mass mutual. Is a round 7500. Of my is that Hough 8000 yet 8000 seats so this just gives them another venues and another sized venue and in you know and the ability to bring different acts the rule. Not under their umbrella their so I think probably bodes well for bear futures as far as who they're able to get in there. And I'm probably a personal level or local Springfield resident you sit there and say. She's used to be controlled by the city notes don't you know this big multi national corporation might feel a little bit like you kind of lose and something that was new party or city little but that's okay. Usually these you know if you look at the way government runs. That type in entity. Yeah MGM's gonna say hey we have to make a profit. Right there they're gonna do Irving they are but does that mean that prices are going out there probably you know silly if prices of go up the acts might be better though in depth it it just did it feels like you'll lose a little little local flavor. It's just a management agreement they're not they're not they don't. Right so they screwed up this now and in all the matters is the management I begin that's that's what really matters the end of days who's running the show there. Now now I I I looked at it is being positive. We'll see and me. If five years from now will be of the yeah you know we it was a good decision or bad decision that it mean and acknowledged that it's been a decision made no no say about it we're just spreading rumors at this point. To reduce payments recast. Your mortgage you know I got to tell you I I didn't even know you could do this that you. And even go to your lender. And let's say your mortgage payment is 3000 dollars a month. You go to your lender and say. Look I'd like to make 50000 dollar additional payment on my mortgage. And have you recalculate. Down my monthly payment. Yes it took to give you an idea of how this works. What recasting does is allows US bears had to throw money towards your mortgage payment a big one lump sum. And then you go to them and say OK I'm gonna maintain the same length of the mortgage of the F 25 years left on your mortgage is still up 25. But I want you to recalculate. My monthly payment based on now having a lower. All right Rosie O or principal value that's outstanding out there may be got a bonus or maybe you inherited some money. In you say. GA I'd I'd like to make an extra payment on I'm not sure I would recast that in order I would probably do rather than recap if I can afford it. It's okay I'll take that extra 50000 dollar payment. And then I'll keep pain in the same amount as in the mortgages can be gone much faster. It yet it so that here's there's the question and kind of the trade off that you make if you make that one big payment and you do keep the same mortgage your right you are going to be able to pay it off sooner. But for some families they might need to prioritize cash flow maybe that can go to college or something like that or some additional expenses that cropped up may be. You know there was a pay cut that someone had to take because that switch jobs and so that's where recasting can be useful in that you say okay. You know can I save myself a few hundred bucks a month in order to make cash will more manageable. You and the other short term you can always go and you know add more money to down the road if you want in order paid off sooner but this is just the way. That you can give really manage cash flow. Is by using a recast. Rather than you know most people think OG to have to go through like four refinance to lower my name and you don't necessarily have to was if you are to give up that low interest if yet you can pay extra and this is the key thing is you have to be able to make a substantial additional payments. Up front and that's something that a lot of families can't. Necessarily. Wile. One reason they think that this is going to take off in terms of popularity news. Most people chuck are not going to be able to deduct the mortgage interest anymore. 28 million yaks payers are going to be added to the category of taking the standard deduction. That that means that very few taxpayers. This to be in the millions spent it on a relative basis the number of people filing an itemized return is gonna shrink. Dramatic yet I just don't think that enough people have money sitting around to do this yeah on a broad basis you know we've we always see the reports that you know. Forty to 50% of Americans don't even have 400 dollars put away even for an emergency so I think that kind of includes a lot of people from doing something like this right away. But it is something we're hate if you do whether it's through an inheritance is you mention or whether you know maybe you just end up you're able to site at low levels of the money. Hey it is something that could make a age difference as far as what your monthly payment looks like give you a little better cash flow trip. Fully confirms what Tesla and BMO BMW and Nissan electric car owners all pretty new I did tele. I drive an electric car and when it's cold out your battery efficiency declines dramatically. He can go Tucker from. 200 miles latest C you have a tassel that it's got a range of 200 miles down fifty miles. It can decline by as much as forty or 50% depending on the cold weather yell what they found is that it's that 41% drop when you go and test these vehicles a twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Which is not Beckel. Any I think about like some mornings when you've driven into work. What's the coldest it's been this winter when you've driven into work 06. Now I mean zero prices here you are in the minus and. No we did we know negatives here Chicago was negative 27 now waking up. No kidding they either going to think about here's how I put that in that's without the wind factor. Right think about the difference between ninety degrees and fifty degrees. And now go from ten to negative right now do that again going from ten down to negative 27 pick up that this. But he SO one at one of the things that was interesting that the pure loss of range in twenty degree weather for the Chevy Volt as an example was only about 12%. But that doesn't factor in the fact that you also need cabin heat during that time seat heaters and things like that because most of your is like you guys drive internal combustion engine cars so you're heat's coming from you and oh yes just spit and stuff back to obviously get you know air filter that you know filters out all the crap and it takes a long time by the way when you drive an electric car takes a long time that into account and he doesn't really. No interest in not my car heats up pretty quickly now I'm only about one or two minutes I remember. Growing up in east take you know five or six on no car manufactures have gotten better at you know getting heat to passengers more rapidly that it realized EB's. And I still had problems with the speed if you most of the most TV owners they plug it in and night and then they'll start the car ten minutes before to turn the heat on. And get warmed up because there that he had even less range where your Indy can do it from their well no it's still plugged in C Mo log house electricity. Finally got so conditioned to think about this from like a day a gas engine perspective so I sit there ago. GRU pumping all those fumes in the year garage there's a feeling to have but you're you're not so. I would I would suggest this if you live in a really hot climate like Arizona. You probably should be driving electric car is battery sooner road very quickly. And if you drive the in the really cold climate I'm not sure how effective area of San Diego. San Diego would be IDs seventy and sunny every day to Dallas Texas beauty is too cold in the south gets pretty warm gag gets real hot as a pretty warm. Many I'm guessing like places like Florida with the heat and humidity that probably isn't ideal either. Now especially if you coast to get the salt that sternly Julian you're losing your conditioning so Jeff now they wouldn't come back for a talk about NAFTA. It's our daily poll question had financial exchange showed Doug John. Vote your conscience. There aren't just vote go to financial exchange oh does come and test away. So president during the State of the Union Address. Was touting the new NAFTA it's called the US MCA. I I thought this is all done but it's not he's got to get through congress and even the Republican. You've got Republicans and Democrats both casting doubt as to whether or not this is going to get through for different reasons it would happen. That's what we did they say well we're not patent. We just NAFTA goes back into effect there's so in theory NAFTA should go back into effect unless we decide to just. Unilaterally pull out of NAFTA. Which would have to be done through power's not a disaster. If you build be a huge mess you 25% market correction. It it worse then. Could be worse actually in the short term mean long term is it something that you know the company I thought your house all negotiated last year in past it was it never it never got to congress. You know that's the big thing so you've got effectively that there's two different problems that you have here and in their different based on what house of congress you're looking. Effectively. You have Democrats who are saying hey this this isn't doing enough to protect workers even you've got Republican saying hey gets too restrictive and trade. In particular in the auto sector where if you look at where Republicans in the senator from a lot of southeast states which tend to be real heavy for autos these days that tennis the Kentucky Alabama Georgia those are heavy auto producing states now. And so there's in this sane to you didn't kind of restrictive we don't know this is necessarily good for us. And so you have the potential that this doesn't end up getting through when it's all said and on here that's a. News because if they wanna change it at all they have to go back to Mexico and Canada to make it just. Congress can't modify it right they've got to get. They've got us rejected. And then send the negotiators back to Mexico and Canada right and so many in both of those countries. You know in theory what could happen again if if the president decides if he says look I wanna get out of NAFTA completely feeds initiates that withdrawal process. Congress than as six months to pass this or you go back to effectively pre NAFTA system yeah that's that's before there so it's I mean it's. What do you think happens. I think NAFTA stays as it is the distinction down now at duke. Tucker I found out who's to blame. For the shortage of housing inventory. Who isn't old people. Now in a shock as a normal merit the EU EU do introduced it might have thought that I know I just see what's been happening. According to an analysis from the economist at Freddie Mac. One point will one point one million homes talker. Have been held off the market by owners born between 1931. In 1941. And another 300000. Chuck have been held off between by those born between 1942. In 1947. Exe and all these houses that are going on the market and we have lower construction numbers and we've historically had the population that we have right now C sit there and say gee. Not as many existing homes being sold not as many new homes being built is it any wonder the prices continue to be under under under un affordable. For people but this is that this is catching people by surprise me you know collectively you're talking about one point four million homes that that's a significant number. What what you think that is. These big neared choosing an agent place so I think it's twofold number one the demand for smaller homes in the lack of construction for smaller homes. Means that what used to be an easy decision you'd sell home at 400000 downside to downsize the one to 200000. Now that downsizing homes costing 35 because everyone wants to move indoors and so people are saying gee do I wanna go from a four bit how Stewart to bed. And always say 50000. That doesn't make sense so I think that's part of it I also think that because of the lack of construction. You see the in any in this is anecdotal. I'm seeing a lot more. Families that are living together now I am now multi generational living. And in into like ages thirties and forties even where you know in some cases asunder daughter is going to admit the plan is for them to care now for their parents and so as oppose that house going on the market previously mr. Tate gets effectively to families living in a house for an extended period of time with what I'm surprised by who we're talking about people truck. That are in the early 70s80s. And in their nineties and that are continuing to each in how looks. As opposed to going into an assisted living facility or into an apartment. Yeah I'm innocent and I do think at some point you're going to see a shift they're just because. There's always along the immune wanna do the maintenance or pay for the upkeep if it's a lot of work it is needed to eat you try to maintain a single family home. And. This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and jokes are. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world stage and warmed up and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and who's dead it's. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. It doesn't take very much to send the stock market down as evidenced by this one mere statement from our old friend Larry Kudlow. He said this morning Eric you know. He said this morning on Fox Business we've got a pretty sizable distance to go here as it relates to. The deal with China. And son of a gun and chuck and I kind of thought we were going to be making some progress high Blackberry now thank you Larry for nothing. The I like. It's very sharply here and in this is. I am I'm surprised that he would come around say this he's obviously this is an orca. Street statement. Why are you surprised you command say this. As I thought they were gonna make it. They still might but I think it's as I've been saying all its not going to be on the things that really matter if they do make it just posturing there. Did this year. I think this is trying to set expectations for hey we're gonna get something that is not going to be what we really disappointing it's it's it's not going to be the overarching deal. That encompasses. If things like intellectual property currencies like about this. Why is train like he hears something just think about when we talk about this deal that's going on right why is Treasury Secretary minutia involved at all. And treasury typically doesn't get involved tree deals the most current season now and so that tells you that's a focus for them. I don't think anything's moving on currency now I think they want it which is why you have minutia involved and the treasury is normally deal with trade deals like this season. I. I don't know all I know is the Dow was down 249 points and happy. If it's if it's not a thrilling development this comes on the back. Of some really disappointing data coming out of Europe as well that the global picture doesn't look great the US is kind of the beacon it's kind of been holding things up for the last. In six months or so. But if the global picture continues to weaken eventually the US can appeal those impacts to. What was the German number you saw it was bad album he pulled up here the manufacturing again I believe it was German industrial production which pretty much is the German yeah I was German industrial production. It came in one point 1% below expectations. It would fail then point 4%. Compared to forecasts for a point 7% gain. German industrial production year over year down three point 9% overall. So you're you're seeing some real weakness. Ian at the European economy between you'd Germany has this is three or four months in a row now that we've seen numbers like this which isn't good from them. You ride yesterday the UK came out and says hey puzzled as Briggs and certainly we're gonna have the worst GDP since 2009. And then you've got the Italian economy which is trying to borrow 200 billion dollars this year that. People really trust that they're going to be able to do so and so you've got bond yields rising for Italy at the moment that the EU isn't real problem real trouble. Now they are there. Well the markets are down so most of your probably lose some money today however if you own shares of SunTrust Banks are BB&T corporation. Your make and money both of those stocks are up because. Overnight they announced a merger of the two. I guess Bibi and t.'s gonna come out on top of this. It dipped BB until come out on top this is a merger of the sixteenth and seventeenth biggest banks in the US that a combined to be the sixth biggest bank when this is all said and done now. And so it's a really significant deal I mean I know people think about these banks and they don't put them on the level of a Morgan Stanley here a Goldman Sachs but the started it up in that conversation with this merger than as far as their overall scale put in perspective. This bank would be bigger than the following companies US Bancorp. TD bank Capital One bank new York Mellon TIAA. There'll be a significant companies this combined company would be bigger than all of them. I. In my opinion you're gonna see continued consolidation in the financial sector whether you're talking about brokerage houses investment bank's retail banks. The the regulatory environment. Is such that. In almost requires. The banks and financial institutions to be large in order to survive long term just because of the costs for technology in regulation. And I think to a certain extent outside of some of the trading arms of the big banks. I think banking to fold it is is. There's two major shifts I think that have happened and number one it's to monetize there's not a huge difference between a lot of many more in number two because of the regulation that you mentioned. In a certain way they almost function like utilities today didn't give it like it's it's not hard Dow performance and it's it's not the days of the wild west when you could have you know this great mortgage lending arm that no one else to figure out how to duplicate the regulations they pretty much every it's it's very cook cut even on the business lines it is it's it's very much cookie cutter so. Yeah you can make money on banks and but it makes it difficult unless you talk about a specific division some of those big banks. It's really different difficult to differentiate and say hey this one's gonna do way better than the others a regional bank but do pretty well. I could if you think there's going to be a lot of consolidation now it could be a place to go. I robot thing based out of Bedford New Hampshire I think I think it's actually the Massachusetts. Anyway. They're stocks surged third tenacity out Bedford okay. They their stock was up 13% after an earnings. Yeah they're up about ten right now after pulling back a little bit here this is a company that was kind of lost in the wilderness until about mid 2016 and and started. Finally put their numbers together a little bit they make those terrific back keeps the Romans now yup so you have a we do my wife had one before we got married so we've had for seven or eight years we which is kinda used to do like maintenance so we'd have to vacuum manually as much so and once or twice a week and you know it doesn't get everything but at least you know gets the big stuff for a but yes there are up 13% after. This earnings beat year the big and they came in with net income of 25 point two million. Which beat the last year's by a more than four times. Revenue rose by about 20% year over year and this was a significant BER analysts were only expecting about fifty cents a share. Be enough earnings to get 88 cents so good quarter for iRobot here. The past five years have been the hottest in modern records federal scientists said on Wednesday the latest in Ceres a warnings. As house Democrats promised to combat climate change. Yes of this we finally have a full year data for 2018 was the fourth warmest year since 1880 according to both NASA. And the NOAA the national Oceanic and atmosphere administration. And the big thing. That you're seeing here in terms of that the actual numbers during 2018. The average temperature across global land in ocean surfaces. I was about one point four degrees above the twentieth century average in particular. Europe was really hot and Middle East was really hot last year and and you continue to see this trend of you know warm years stacking up in recent years nine of the ten warmest years on record of Kurt since 2005. In India and the weather related disasters are way. Those part of the news stories you know you look at. You know hurricanes and floods you view their rising rap when Nielsen at the hurricanes that are hitting more real places they didn't used to you know that's that's I think one of the big things that you're seeing is he might not have a huge increase that number in hurricanes but the move differently today the ever yes ever scuba dive he did a diverse I've never known couple times it yes it's a lot of fun. And I can tell you. Indicting in indicting circles. You hear a lot of chatter about the reefs in there tough shape. Yeah I mean you get the other bleaching that's happening because of higher Temps and two televisions around and they're dying. The other core roots in the problems when they die it's not like they just come back. Like the you know the next week military general are you notes it takes years to get a new. Comprehensive coral reef you know effectively grown. And so it's not something where they just bounce back instantly. I asked the scientists a citizen due to the warm water and they said we don't know leave again they're not entirely sure they think it's a combination of warmer water. And potentially you know more extra nutrients getting into the system that kind of changed the overall composition of the water but the not entirely sure when he states the incentive auction. Yet but additional contaminants and stuff for me that that certain countries I was Australia. Is saying you can't use on him there's only certain kinds are going to be available for sale now. We have big problems Gregory. It's via huge browns I can't remember the percentage but they've got all that was a beautiful problem I go back 25 years ago did you best I've in my life you know. Anyway Wu who will continue to follow that story. A General Motors we learned a little bit more about their earnings report they reported yesterday in the stock rally to a degree. Average selling price for their trucks. 44000 bucks yet it's it's just a massive massive number when you look at it drastically outstripping. The median price for a vehicle that sold in general in the US which is in the mid thirties and OK you're talking they're they're able to on their trucks they just have a good product. There there really popular in the northeast it's I always find it funny when you look at weird different pick up trucks are popular and there is a strict geographic component to acts texas' four Texas is that there are counties in Texas where north of 40% of all vehicles sold their Ford F series pickups. And so the northeast tends to be very high and GMC. And then you've got kind of in the midwest a little bit of God's country out there and rammed him and so it's it's it's always interesting what you see there. But pretty much would GM is doing is they're saying look we've got weakness in our China operations because Chinese auto sales declining for the first time in a long time by the way. So what they're doing to try to make up for that is saying hey we need to bad you know build more. High margin trucks in the US and settlement of the US. Because that's how we're gonna kinda keep things moving in the short term while we see this China weakness so. That's what they're trying to do to this point it's worked for them but it simply ran out of people that there will show up 44000 dollars for truck or ten. Almost exactly on the money. Check out our website at financial exchange showed Doug come and find the station closest to you. This is the financial exchange radio network. In the first hour for our show we had spirited discussion as it relates to student loans I wanna revisit that because it is our poll question of the day. Had to do trap with the idea of when you graduate college. Take that first job. Rather than. You getting your six month hiatus on student loan payments. The money for your student loan payment would come directly out of your pay check this is something being suggested by senator Lamar Alexander who's from Tennessee. I like the idea I I'd like I think it makes an awful lot of sense don't make it optional make it required payment. Yet that that. Two issues that I came I like the system is a whole month that the tuition that I came up with that I think are big ones number one a lot of the people that are delinquent on student loans. If you look at the schools they attended than the jobs they have. This wouldn't necessarily help. In terms of them being able to pay those lines off yes not the med students that are defaulting no not the it's up the person that graduated with a degree in engineering from Dartmouth that's the fault. So you know doesn't help anyone who you know went to what you Koran being collagen and gut you know degree in something that. They doesn't really matter and you know. They they promised you know we know we're gonna get your job and then the job's just not there on so doesn't help them and there are things it doesn't do anything to address the cost of college you know it's it's putting a band aid on the problem so I do like that it it allows for. The payment to effectively be automated so it comes out before you get your paychecks they don't see the money soils I got out as I donate the way I look at it is CEO and you look at the deficiencies. And and how many people are late on their student loan payments. Got to help somewhat. It it probably does okay at it it probably does but the other thing. Is you know you just again I come back to if if someone does not have a job or here's another question okay. So this we're talking about W two wages what are some new overdrive for. There's there's no set up for withholding their week their contractor he could do need to send it send a notice he iris knows everything. Why I know they know everything but there isn't a mechanism set up for withholding on that type of pain as its independent contractors or contractors. Option to compete. And I'm just saying like again right now there's no way to do that seems like. The pay for those drivers that always go and Europeans. Been tracking that I haven't known as looking at it and the they're now in a nine hour shift to make in 25300. Bucks you think that. Sadia and look at actually talked to Mike Hoover driver on Monday night about it to I was a right and he said yeah I ESP yoke is you have to remember they have bonuses they hit. Based on certain number of rides per week and but if you're not hitting those bonuses all of and it's meeker yeah you've got to be in order to make a good wage. And when I say good way to talk and 25 to 35 dollars an hour yeah you've got to putting in. Forty hours a week more like 45. To sixty now a lot of time and Ivan and it's a lot of kind of funky times to the 2 am on Saturdays and stuff like well that's when you've that's when you kill GAAP you know she picked us up at the airport in what is normally uses on Monday night's picked us up at the airport what's normally. Sixty dollar ride was 87 because served for it. Oh is that as it was about 40% higher than Austin which you know she loved that a gift she didn't even know she didn't even know with a fair was going to be. But I do Taylor yeah maybe she just didn't look. If you like to participate in our poll has to do student loan payments we got really sidetracked there. Do you think that student loan payments should be taken out of paychecks I I think they should be I think it's the responsible thing to do automate this darn thing don't make it an optional payment. If you make it an optional payment the millennial frugal and take that money and buy a I'm the kind of toast instead of making their student loan payment. So if you'd like participate in his Mercedes financial exchange showed commie in Texas at 63566. But the Tex lines are about turn very busy. If we're gonna play trivia. Henry. Aron one of the best baseball players to ever live turned 85 years old this week we will be asking trivia questions about Hank Aaron. How many home runs did Hank Aaron finish his career. Now mark tech's number 63566. If he had not played trivia before remember to put my first name. Before you type in 63566. Barry 63566. And then the answer to the question how many home runs did Hank Aaron. Finish his career width. Lois will select a winner. Among the many correct answers we're gonna get to that question he doesn't have the record anymore right visionary. They he had the record for many. Mr. bonds now are no outs or aggregates are bonded as a single year but in the end the district's next to right disease drugs. They don't have an asterisk it. No they shouldn't that now hole at the canons. And everyone's mind there's an Astro Joseph and actually thinks that Iran is the greatest home run hitter of all time all Hank Aaron actually I'd take that back A-Rod thinks he's the greatest. Both the all time OK Andy 63566. Is the text. What do you think about the military draft I saw this as surprised how many countries still have. And I'm sorry actually it is Barry Bonds who has the Major League record doesn't say it is bonds I was right initially yep bonds a 762. So asterisk but he's a drug user to India when I say drugs and store all that year where you have 173. Home runs a somewhat ridiculous I'll my daughter's like use of music using an aluminum bat and nobody else. It's now. De A-Rod is actually fourth on the list yeah 696. Yeah misspoke there. Well we talked about. The military draft elsewhere okay easy Segway what countries happen. Yeah you've got a number of countries that do have them hassle you know the US obviously did have one for a number years in the sixties you in the early seventy's thank. And so Russia's got one Switzerland does Israel does Norway China so you get a number of different countries that do have them would be wrong. With the you know when you graduate high school talker. Rather then going right into college you do and we a year two years in the military. You learn a trade. And then you get to be everybody has to do it in in you can go in you'd do public service unions serving you learn how to. Should begun in. I've thanked him and serve at all and an altar. Tucker doesn't wanna drive a thank you just think that's just made a lot of countries like Israel right Israel amendments served in the defense first three years women. Are constructed for two here. So the biggest thing that I think you're gonna run into just in terms of problems with this is how that deep pay for. You know we talk about that sheer number OK now you talk met three to four million people a year old domestic spending. But think about how big the US armed forces today we're talking like 600000 people know you're talking about you know effectively if you've got three years of that in there than you talk to go for 600012. Million that's twenty times the size. And he pay for that he could have them be you could have been doing public works projects with the same time but that's not really the military. What can be attractive thing about a lot of military operations are involved building bridges and hospitals and you look at what our military does around the world away and I agree but you know it's not infantryman their building hospitals and you know it's not tank drivers that are building hospitals you have no. Combat engineers that do that is a lot of countries do it. Biggest that are prepared. He what are we come back worth talk about the largest company by market capitalization. I folks this is Mike Armstrong and I'm joined by estate planning attorney Todd lets you with your financial exchange quick tip of the day. Today we're talking about the differences between revote Kabul and your rebuild Kabul trusts have taught you what is the biggest difference between a revote Kabul verses and durable global trust. You know this is probably the most frequently asked question that that I get here richer people just wanna know that and there are really a lot of differences but what I'm gonna do is just tell you what we're talking about the differences between a Medicaid irrevocable trust has folks there's so many kinds of irrevocable trusts out there. I wanna be clear that this is those income only Medicaid. Irrevocable trusts that are designed to protect assets from the owners now vs. A re vocal bull family type trust. The biggest difference between the two is that the re vocal trust will never protect assets from the nursing a five years ten years doesn't matter how long your assets current. But with an irrevocable trust after the assets have been put in there for five years. Then they will be protected from the cost of long term care that's really the difference what let's haired pain attorney to draft time trust to revoke and I just go and have them change it to and you're vocal tracks so many people love to do that you could but no. You actually have to start over the language of the trust itself is key. In making it protected from the nursing homes so you can't just make the word revoke double irrevocable and the out of there not so easy but that's the big difference otherwise control wise I think you're still. About the same. Excellent while the state planning expert to Christian and don't have written a brand new guys don't answer the most common questions that you have about the differences between revote Kabul and irrevocable trusts you gonna press has brand new guide by calling 866848. 5699. However folks if you wanna download the guide today just as it legal exchange showed dot com. Once again if you want to guide paper though give us a call 866848569. You might not be able to keep up with all the latest business and finance news but we can't fix the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chunks not a on the financial exchange radio network. Well the news for stocks continues to deteriorate. We just can't catch a break today first it's Larry Kudlow and now. I guess president G says an item in a meat. It yes this is reporting coming from C I have my own. Just coming from CNBC Larry and pretty much they have said. That it's unlikely that president trump and president G will meet by B march 1 deadline that's being reported by CNBC currently. And so stocks have started to sell off a little bit at the moment. The Dow is off 346. Extra 360 points currently. The S&P is off 42 in the NASDAQ is off. A 131. So about one and a half percent sell off taking place at the moment so what do you gleaning from that statement. I think that the sushi that. This doesn't change I think my overall perspective on these negotiations. From where I started in that the beat outstanding issues. I don't think are going to be able to be addressed is there's no incentive for China to bend on. And if they're not going to bend on any of them the question becomes does the US except a smaller deal that ignores a lot of those things. Or does it use has just told that the terrorists or does the US go and say you know what you're not gonna deal Morgan just raise tariffs and we go from there. If that is the case if you do see these additional tariffs implemented as China's can do the same thing. Yet if if you reduce we will try to could potentially do things that are. Just as bad if not more devastating to the US Communist China decides hey we're gonna devalue our currency and all of us I mean. You could have attend 50% sell and markets. In Washington you know just because they export all that deflation and lack of growth from China to the rest the world that's what you'd end up seeing there so. I think it out of the devalue their currency. From what perspective. I mean. Air everybody wants to devalue there currencies sub point for the whole bunch more middle again and like all. The way that they manage it right now if they wanna increase the value of their currency all they do is they sell off some of the Treasury's released dollars back into the world and OK so yeah. If you need to devalue your currency all you do is take you to buy more dollars if you want to and drive up the value of the dollar or you print more Euro currency it is although when they borrow money. In May pay for oil or they pay for jets from Boeing there's the pain that you know this is the core thing is China doesn't want to use dollars anymore. Date waiting Boeing's gonna Selma gents if they don't used now if bones if the only growth Boeing has is coming from China yes. Yes. And I need it I caddie run your business. On a currency that's about as reliable as the pace. All I'm saying is this is where China wants to get to they want to get away from a dollar denominated system and this is all coming to a head in this negotiation right here. Well the market's telling you that. The likelihood of the tariffs being invoked is increasing as the Dow was down 352. Point tonight to Turks point the nasdaq's down 128. But that could just be the tip the iceberg and it could be I mean here's the thing you. This market over the last. Six weeks in my opinion. Has been backstop by the Fed. It's at the overall situation has improved anywhere and China's economy is getting better Europe's economy is getting worse. You know the overall situation is not improving anywhere in the globe at the moment so. To me this whole rally that we've seen that has been yeah we maybe get ahead of ourselves a little bit back in December. But also it's been backed up by a much more dovish fed I mean I've never ever seen anyone turn around so quickly. They can't remember relate to what Jay Powell didn't six weeks. Both him and and by the way to take. Forget to pay attention to what Janet Yellen said over the last six weeks to. Just back in December she was saying up to three more hikes yesterday she consensus yet next move could be up or down right. Knew I tell you something now things are flawed. Yes apple was the largest company in the country until yesterday it might still we've been I've been able to pull an accurate list as of today. But as of yesterday at least the market cap on apple was 821. Point six billion dollars. Which topped both Microsoft and Amazon which both declined one point 1% on the day. So the end of Wednesday's trading Microsoft is worth 813 billion. Amazon 805 and alphabet 778. Million dollars CF four companies gonna. Do Canada yep pretty much all that and here's verify enemies between us for them there were three trillion dollar. The whole issue is a whole lot of cash. So Pacific gas and electric. Just cannot catch a break and gas explosion in San Francisco and and neighborhood shot flames into the air for hours on Wednesday. And burned five buildings sending panicked residents and workers fleeing into the streets and guess who is in charts. PG&E they were out trying to shut off this gas line. And pretty much what. What they had to do by the way in order to shut this off. This state excavation rules in California they have to dig by hand around these other pipelines in order to squeeze this plastic line off. So you know they could bring in heavy machinery and stuff like that so its quarterly you have to dig by hand in order to deal with this probably talk a bit dangerous job. Well now they get that by hand yep no things now so. And another piano issue for. You know this is relatively minor compared to the other liabilities that are out there. But they just kicked it out of the headlines that they can't make it to end and they would like to this is not a headline no. That they want to be involved you know how they say that no news you know there's no such thing as bad news this is things bad publicity. There is the. This is it this is the is it a bit of it that's for company and a. I guess the dating scene is still pot. What's that it's similar to tender date except the woman has to indicate that she's interest to do you first well. That's only good that probably gets more again it's yes it's estimated valuation right now is about a billion dollars and so. It does get a lot more women there which in turn. Brings men throughout the platform means the same principles ladies that if you have women their men are gonna show up in and if so who pays the men in the win I. That's beyond my level of understanding. My guess you have any idea Tucker Florida. I thought I thought these things were free about the line. So there's there's all based versions that are free. If you actually wanna date you you have to pay I don't know if I don't know how the the paying works. Or bumble the other thing that is really taking off his tenders university product called Tinder you. It's geared towards college student just sounds wrong in its demonstrated good traction with women in particular. Since their potential matches are all other university students and not a Olbermann so the college girls like that and so bumble. Either way the the app it has a base free version but if you want to I guess being able to. Unlock additional features. It's ten dollars a month. Small price to pay. Oprah's pay for all of this news IP you needed date. I would pay. And it. Grateful ten bucks a month and Demi and in in inflation to art it was really get a date pro like three bucks a month back when you were here on your prime an effort that was hard. Really. See that yes ass about it we can't all the talk so are again. Go pro. It Eddie turning it around well they they seem to at least would be. Doing a little bit better than expected OK good not at a business knows that they're not out of business yet the stock currently is trading about five dollars and twenty cents a share still Lou auction it still losing money right now it's still. Is a stock that since its peak which was reached back in September when he fourteen is a lost about 92% of its value so it's you know the stock was 82 dollar stock in September 14. The big problem that they're still having. Is once you buy a go pro. You really need a new one. And they struggle with that the straw with margins because there's a lot of competition in this space right now. And they they've really struggled to get any kind of recurring revenue you know one of the things they were trying to do when they first dud debuted as a publicly traded company. Is they wanted to create all these channels for almost in a TV year streaming and things like that. And that's just kind of flopped and fallen on its face to this point it just is not trying to present as you to think yes so. You know that they're still losing money at this point. I don't know if they can ever get to scale where they're actually profitable it is here's the thing that I always come back to on companies like this is them. So go pro is losing money right now. Somebody buys them one okay now what would you argue that the last thirty year and a half has been about as good of an economies we've had no 120 years agree. So if you can't make a profit in the best. Economic environment possible I hear your argument we're a year ago when things fall park rate which could happen any time the bone yard.
