Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. We have got more news cover and I think we can fit into two hours today we're entering day 35 government shut down the seconds. Pay period the government waste will not be paid. We have got. The whole slew of Amazon news intern you taxes and facing new products they're rolling out before we get to any of that's. We do need to touch on the indictment in a restive former trump advisor Roger Stone hold 24 page indictment come out. A charge of making false statements witness tampering obstruction of justice. And so long list of indictments nothing here to do with. Russian collusion which remains the main purpose of the Robert Mueller investigation but. There should be new more news breaking on this sometime around eleven and we will keep you folks updated. I'm Mike Armstrong Christine Dunn and Tucker Silva in the studio with you this morning and I wanna get into. A little bit more about the government shut down because we had a couple of votes that took place in the senate yesterday neither of which. Were really even that close to passing at this point. I definitely not in overseeing. Some movements on main congress across party lines as people are trying to figure out away. To reach some kind of compromise but still no compromise. So let's talk about what the two there their two competing votes here in the senate. Either of them would have needed sixty votes to to pass and it you know that's difficult because Republicans they hold. A lead it's a 5347. Republican to Democrats control of the senate. The first one was the Republican approved bill. That failed with fifty votes in favor 47 against following that there was a democratic. Bill that was just to reopen the government temporarily with out any border wall funding. That also failed 52 to 44. The significant. Leave there are senators Susan Collins of Maine Republican and Cory Gardner of cop Colorado. On you know did cross party lines in order vote for them and Tino and both of them are up for reelection and there's swing states next year right that was a significant movement that we saw. It was yes say it was a bit surprising that you saw the democratic look led bill garner more support in the Republican one. Six Republicans crossed party lines to vote for it. It does at least seemed to me that there is a little bit more movement. This week and there have been over the last. Arteries sick six weeks now third four to five weeks. It's being complete and utter stalemate where is now you know there's word OK well maybe I just gets paid. Down payment on the border why. All ants clearly some senators at least are willing to vote for a bill that does not include border wall funding to reopen the government. Back to talking about border security measures once the government reopens. On saying well maybe there are ways you can fortify ports of entry hire more immigration judges among other steps. So they're trying to look at alternatives it's going to be interesting to see whether the White House agrees that I think that's senator Joseph mansion a Democrat from west Virginia's summed it up really well. He said. Where are not serving the public and we're all guilty right now the government is the enemy of the people and I think people are increasingly feeling that way on both sides of the fence so to speak. Just because you know it's it's time to get those workers back to their jobs. Yeah and you know where we are not a political show and I'm not trying and that read in the politics of this but it's it is impacting the economy and that that. Much is clear you know airlines all reported over the last few days and they cited government shut down. Banks have been saying the government shut down as you know quite possibly leading to a slowdown in first quarter gross domestic product. So yeah there there is a real financial impact. To this government shut down not just to the individuals and we clearly the stories about the individuals are. Difficult decade folks not being paid medical bills and mortgages but in the aggregate it is also really in. Acting markets absolutely and you know we just on headline crossed just now in fact that I believe flights into and I think if LaGuardia Airport area. Honest not is that right Tucker. FAA says it is halting flights into New York's LaGuardia Airport duty air traffic control staffing issues really. Right now we're seeing it hit the airports pretty bit. It's pretty hey I mean that's one of the busiest airports in the world much less the US this is and I'm very significant impact on our economy. We did a number of airlines right Mike on talk about strains worsening. On in their earnings reports American Airlines south last. It's not only affecting revenues it's affecting their ability to add routes and streamline and update their fleets and all of. It is you know this was I don't wanna stressed too much the government shutdown when it comes the airlines because. The airlines to all reported yesterday. But largely very very positive American. JetBlue to an ugly south and southwest are registered in grand yet all three reported yesterday they are all up between three and 5%. Really really strong Q4 and analysts had been pretty concerned about where the airlines were going to be going. Usually seen as an early indicator for potential economic slowdown you know people starts feeling in the while the sand not gonna go on this trip this month or you know maybe I always try fly first or business and I'm gonna fly coach instead and you really did not see that at least in the fourth quarter of last year. But he did a better job with their per unit. On sales they did sit per unit basically means what they're able to do around profitability for each seat right there with that that they book. On the and so we did see improvement there. On they also I think benefited from lower fuel costs so that always helped as well and that definitely appears to profitability so. So what they're saying is that okay you know we're doing OK right now but let's get together. Yes and you know the FAA a bad the airlines themselves all of them have just kind of pointed to the fact that they feel like flying today is riskier because the government shut out totally it ended there's evidence to support it I mean there there has not been an increase in incidents reported from air traffic control. But you know you've got more TSA agents out there that peaked out at 10% call outs. Offer for sickly you've got a lot of. FAA in you've got a lot of air traffic controllers just resigning. And denied that is close to was close to retirement anyway. I'm done I don't wanna zero fives and a deal with as this one a go find that you know. A you know an air traffic controllers about the most stressful job and in the country if yours if you're unaware how stressful their job that's Chara hadn't thought of that but that's too it's got to be an incredibly so it's an incredibly stressful job and you're not getting paid. Yeah and it's a house and I'm a couple of years your retirement. The very stressful and the hours are really consistent I guess I know somebody was one and you know he it'll it'll work a ton of lower and it's and then they'll get some issues here and there but it's pretty frequent. Hunters of his hours days great pace greatness that we stressful yeah that's a good job I've got I've colleague or friend of mine also that I would prefer for years so that day controller down in the DC area and yeah. You know if not a bad gig great job for a young thirty something but you know. Your blood pressures and jobs. Had the no lack of paying that. That harassment generally speaking airline companies. Had a fantastic quarter in the fourth quarter and guided pretty strong for the rest of the year too so pretty good news if you are. Investing news major airlines right now but it's definitely big questions about where they go in the first quarter of this year and the rest of 2019. Talk to me about how the government shut down. Is going to impacts. Coolidge. Well it's interesting because a lot of furloughed workers had to. Sign their kids up. For free school meals that he did on mail program. And that was an unexpected increase to those budgets right so a lot of school systems are taking a look at this and sang a paid do we have enough cash. To cover. That additional you know increase in and sign up to the school meals. Now I guess the government that ad is it's run by the department of agriculture and they had originally estimated that they had enough cashed in March but they didn't take into account the fact that all the federal workers are going to be signing up ten. Thousands new kids be signed up for the program because they're not getting paid yet that's. That's will be concerned I think the the program provides free or subsidized lunches for about thirty million children. Across the country I mean and as an example on their mothers make and you know ten dollars an hour job I think is like at a fast food restaurant you know leave government worker through action took a job at a fast food restaurant policies that you government work again Texas hasn't been paid for four weeks and she just took a jab working it at whatever that's yeah. Gas I mean you'd see how this is impacting the individuals. IE have a very difficult time believing that. Even if this shut down went through march which I don't anticipate it would but I have a tough time we've got some wouldn't. Stepping fine way to fund the school lunch programs here and I think that's like the tax returns at that interest and tax out of via a seven and one. Government employs are so stupid they don't have emergency funds for six months on hand. I mean if you're government workers should you kind of have some sort of wrote. Cushioned emergency savings for these situations or is this I actually dosages and you're very unique situation and for six months as a lot. Show. Generally speaking as. And then on the level of of worker I mean you have a lot of federal workers you know who. You work it all ends of the pace scale out and is so I'm sure that there are some who are you know type of Whelan but this savings but probably not an effort 46 months and what they're making and running break. So it depends what I think what I think the techsters probably prefer enters just a general financial planning techniques and at all times I've got at least three to six months of living expenses hand. But I'll also tell that person is that about 75% of Americans don't so definitely decades. It's just a reality of the ways the right and today. We are going to take a quick break coming up we're talking about Amazon and all of these new proprietary brands that they're trying to roll out in the impacted near me now be having on their business. Stay tuned to financial exchange radio network. For those of us with older parents the idea of having to move one of them to a nursing home can be a scary thought indeed the New England according to Genworth the average yearly cost of a private room is almost 135000. Dollars that number is expected to be increased by 25%. By the year 20/20 eight think about paying over 180000. Dollars a year for your mom to be in a nursing home and how dramatically your financial situation would change under those circumstances. If a nursing home stays in near term possibility and you haven't done your claiming that. And so do qualify I'm traveling in a Matta town there's not a leader bank branch nearby. I can use that ATM card number and be reimbursed the three dollars order exactly. That in so the benefit of that is that really expands or breach network yeah he's in need yen. Doesn't have to be leader bank. Tucker what do you what do you buy those frequently on him as a like if you're not categorize your purchases of electronics is it just like. Food is at home good what are you buying. It's not it's not food. For sale I mean I guess the only food or they buy honors its coffee. Account. Good guys is kind of like every day needs and especially with the B recently we've. But time buying and talk crap on there in relation to the new boards code diapers wipes all yellow lights. We get diapers the other day just other things we you know forgot to put our Charlotte simple like that Christine the. You guys have like fifty packages today shown up on yeah. So they find that at christmastime an ongoing basis and mean Catholic violent blacks. And other just kind of. At creek and instantaneously in Paris pants of instances of that mechanically and so we do the recurring order so we like consistently have you out every month reign in things that show opener or like granola bars and things like that it's ever in the house. Ever bought any of the like proprietary names on products like the games on basic stuff sure yeah I've purchased there ams on basics batteries yeah as I've done power cords I've done computer mouse Erica does this compare with other items cheaper mine is it cheaper. Eighties late it is slightly cheaper quite frankly the reason that I know buying it is pride because they put it right at the top of the list it's an Amazon sponsored product and even bother looking at the other owners purring they're trying to do more of that Amazon has rolled out I think they have about twenty different proprietary brands if not more. But what they've been finding is that. They're not as good at trying to manufacture things on the round they do a really good job selling it that they're not all that rated figured out how to make it and you know build off of all of that so they're working with a bunch of different companies GMC was one of the big ones mentioned tough to needle is a mattress company. I'm also. Available here and there having these companies make these exclusive products just to be sold on Amazon. In common retail strategy it has an exit to that point re start to white label things yourself right yeah I mean series institute of time with appliances you know whirlpool and Maytag Easter make appliances under other brand names for retailers all the time. Yeah best buy has there like every and Black Friday they have their proprietary. Black Friday the only television that they have amber ale. We're one of these companies. I wouldn't go anywhere in news that's why Amazon has this history. A learning how you do your business learning how you make yourself learning how you managed out. And and just copying it and replace that China. Yeah. This is trying to China does they Amazon model I'd. Eight I I get really concerned if I'm tough to Neil so tough to needle is this online matches company. You know you need. A huge dent in the industry and there's you know they're finding that. Be really beneficial if they could sell their properties and hands they're creating its own proprietary product it's gonna go on ams on. And I just knowing the back my head got fifteen engineers tearing apart their ethnic and make it for cheaper. And managers has called the gnawed or not. That's 395 dollars for mattress. Forget about that someone I have not but I'm seriously considering it is were due for new mattress all of them you did you know at Richmond event. I don't know remembers Groupon like seven years it's great match Soka and how much it caution like three or 400 bucks really. All right so lows late and we had to get it up staircases healthy. Wait X 600 pounds and that part was terrible via Packers if you ever been up a staircase in south it's about as. It is there no noble is the delivery process was not a hassle or into the charger for shipment of dropped an offer its front that comes out of what. Block threats in itself. I think you can pays me to bring tears bringing up the staircase back to we did not Regis. It came up scratched up in its box yeah I'd like letter. Greed pretty much on all but yet like unfolds before our students without its practices where sees it very comfortable. We don't it's now our gestured mattress is read. Acting sized bed now but then I would say it's as comfortable if not Morse code in the one that we went and paid two or three times the price. Jordan's yeah I mean I've where we're in the market for mattress him. You know Jordan's you know good matches but they're expensive you know on so if I could get something much cheaper at 395 dollars in light on us. Their risk is that you don't like it but they accept returns yes just a pain and this one this one specifically as the other companies deuces that day at a hundred day trial. Yeah and just the return process isn't a huge deal it's not. But it you know is attained by stressing. Bosnia for for about your return right. The data from. Korea I mean. A I mean it's obviously on the for a hundred days yeah I don't appointment press. So you would consider it I won. I would I would I have it's I would obviously considered that is our poll question today you can log on to financial exchange showed dot com. And let us know would you buy a match online if it was cheaper it will be cheaper by the way in almost what you guys are you bide you know that matches on line. But we're talking sight unseen in a can't go tested out in the store first and go buy it which somebody's. Do you have that option yet his go sight unseen would you buy a match online Christiane what you do on. And now I mean there's so part of me that that once you went to sit on yeah try it out you know although. Some match stories that we're going bankrupt or close to bankruptcy because of this very trend yeah. And there were as. Mattress firm yet the united match that went bankrupt. Yeah auto companies can't keep up with and legitimately I mean. I don't not an actress expert of equality but these are often times half the price of the ones you see in store. So pretty pretty serious this camp but again you go on financial exchange show cast your vote. You also text the show if you have any if you have input if you've done this before a company that you used in if you if you're happy with that are not at all happy with it. Let him know Joseph 63566. 'cause I'm in the market this is how Tucker gets all its expert information that's it's you know I'll fashion shows are we appreciated it. The other big Amazon news so in conclusion that they are contract with all sorts of different companies to just make these proprietary products for them. Chuck sprouted up for I think it's a mistake for these companies to space programs because Amazon has proven that whatever you do Amazon's better. And they've they've not a lot of companies off by doing this. The move in Massachusetts is that it looks like we are really gonna start cracking down collecting sales tax for pretty much anyone that sells on Amazon. And then Janet masonic as has been collecting sales tax since 2013. But not. From goods sold by small and medium size businesses that's for a company announced looking at doing it for everything could at Ford two million bucks the budget Massachusetts. So take a look at markets now what a couple of companies moving around quite a bit E*Trade reported earnings the hearings themselves matched estimates about a buck 03 shares are dollar and three cents per share but the revenue fell short of best analysts analysts estimates. In what was a pretty difficult Q4 that stock is down a little bit over 3%. And then Colgate Pall mall of which Iraq had lumped together in the same area with Procter & Gamble and Johnson Johnson which have really been facing. Difficulty. In adapting to the new online shopping you know scenario is that we're in today. They you reported pretty decent profit 74 cents a share for the red latest quarter. Revenue and organic sales both beat forecasts. The predicting lower sales and earnings for 29 teens. A bit of a mixed bag good report for Q4 bit. A little bit concerned about 2019 and fathering a standout in a very very quickly changing consumer. Environment that they're facing stock is up right now about 13%. On the news. But I do target no that's OK so. The big story this Iran this year and last year's been all the California wildfires taking place. And whether or not. Pacific gas and electric is going to be held liable for their stock price would certainly imply that they're going to be but there is a little bit of relief at least for the company. They came out overnight in California. Yeah California fire investigator says that the top spire which was one of the fires on that destroyed nearly 37000. Acres mainly in Napa and Sonoma counties and killed 22 people. Was actually caused by a private electrical system. And that's that kind of end to speculation that. On including including tabs admittedly bits. You know. People had been concerned that. As much as thirty billion dollars related to the 2017 when he eighteen fires. So that company has definitely been under a lot of pressure. Yes and now the big question of the campfire in the 2018 campfire killed 86 people last year. That's really the big issue that's still out there this helped a little bit. You know Pacific gas and electric haven't definitively said one way or another if they're going to be held liable Ford but it certainly looks like it. Yesterday. PG and he was up seventy plus percent today they're down another 14%. Brings into about twelve bucks a share which anyone following the story that's about quarter of the price of there closed back in November of this year before all these wildfires. We're getting pointed that out PG and he. Really dings brings big long term questions about. What is going to happen with California utility company because. All indications appear to go bankrupt sometime next twelve months. And a lot of discussion around that isn't there because the California public utilities commission is expanding an existing probe into the company's safety practices. And so the company is kind of been responding to that pressure by shaking up its board of directors. As part of a plan to improve safety. But I guess hedge funds stepped in and send hate don't don't declare bankruptcy so fast so so there's definitely a lot of debate going on about. About oh. The future PG Neiman info it's a bit preposterous and it's Albany government control that right all their rates are controlled by the state of California legislature. When trying to increase their rates to keep a closer eye on the wires they get shut down by the legislature but then when there's a wildfire they can be put into bankruptcy so and we talked about this pretty extensively on the show but it's it's going to serve as a really an example for all the other regulated utility companies in this country. You know folks as we age long term care is something to make sure you plan for how quickly would your assets be depleted yet to write checks to the tune of 141000 dollars every month. According to Genworth the average cost of private room and in nursing home in New England is just under 135000. Dollars per year and an average cost is expected to increase over 100. 81000. I announced yesterday that back Carlos you don't has resigned from the top. Position of Pernod. Which I mean really no choice she spent two months in prison and you can't exactly run a company but I want kind of spend a little bit just going back and giving some background on Conan you know where he what he did that led up to this position that he has that he had. You know running one of the biggest car companies or car. Conglomerates in the world then. Yes I mean yesterday Renault sport tapped Michelin chief Sean dominates an art to become chairman of the French automaker. And and so that kind of and the side effort gun there as he as he waits you know trial and movement in Japan. Any income was really seen as. Stepping in and kind of saving Nissan and Mitsubishi and very difficult financial time for that day he's he's got plenty of people that don't seem has made him great guy habit. And he stepped in and real the played a big big role in keeping those companies have floats. But day you know there are a lot of deals worked out that. It's our daily poll question had financial exchange showed Doug John. Vote your conscience. Aaron just vote. Go to financial exchange oh does come in castaway. Joining us here right now is casino Fritz now who is a reporter with Fox Business news she's going to be telling us little bit what she's seeing on her front with the markets today good morning Christina. Good morning and thanks for joining us today. So looks like overall the markets are up today on on your front what are you hearing whereas the biggest mover out there. Yeah actor it is up and at the big question is whether we're gonna use that we had bird January which is a surprise surprise and just given me. Volatility in December it was. Quite create the Christmas Eve all these days not a market and now is that it's. But the big question is at a strategy Shaq taking heading into it when he in nineteen consisted. She ends up taking market that are that we eat is it gonna be value stocks in the connect wrote dot. There's certain factors that are doing quite Wallach semiconductors I think there at bat last I checked that thirteen per tank. It's been really big and at that energy industrials and financials. Across the board but I think there's. There's untraded that we have gone up Fox Business yesterday that was being you know this could be dumb money in the market people think that there. Getting in right out buying the is that just temporary diet that he the correction that coming. But there's obviously been conflicting views there's a lot of the news headlines that are driving these market. The one thing that I was not surprised that yesterday is normally we whenever we get anything about China. You see a huge movement in the market has treated expelled companies and American companies that want that are really going to cost the Paris. But yesterday you had. Secretary Wilbur Ross e-commerce sector he was not in the EU at least that that we are miles and miles. Away from any type of deal and they knew that Larry Kudlow it was economic advisor come on Fox News and made that the president was very optimistic. Can it happen with China. And my tone out of him is an messages there coming out there. Exactly and but the market didn't even react. Didn't even have to treat at could edit chart about it yesterday is showing its cut there was no reaction to my question is are investors. Not thinking anything can happen had they RT I I know. A trade war that they thought OK nothing's really gonna progress that we're not to Wear it like I I I'm still trying to grapple about how they're reacting to that news. That nothing could potentially happen in order not worried about the march 2 deadline. Christina moving away from trade told that we are do you think the Fed has to go from here they days Spencer rumors that maybe they slowed down. Their unwinding of their bond portfolio do what do we know what should be looking at from the Fed in the upcoming meetings. Yet the bet that would be next week we're going to be getting comet and the they're balance sheet and in the past or get a lot of people been talking about it traders. Being that the first and allow you had to Barrett will affect the market you have these interest rates that are on fire which now we know that that is gonna be patient because that seems to BD the word of the day for the bad that they can be patient with everything in the awaited data. Eat before. By the continue with hikes. But the other variable is the fact that they're unwinding their balance sheet that the latest news actually you know like today in the Wall Street Journal that. They could potentially not you winding down as much as he acted via the balance sheet but that about war trillion dollars. And what he policy journal pollutants in the in majors. You know hovered down to about the doubled so often now they'll go to the I'd challenge as opposed to what was the regionally estimated at one point actually reach that it's willing to. Their balance sheet I year. And they don't want it to rain and much liquidity out of the market I think that next week is the big moment you will Jay Powell be outlining. Did not what's gonna happen. When it comes to. The ballots yet I think that the meter and a lot of investors at that we have is too valuable piece incompetent a key interest rates market go higher. But are we gonna heat adding liquidity market or not. And Pristina as her ending this week we've had a lot of earnings reported how is how are investors feeling about on the earning season over all and what that seems to indicate for what the Fed might do. We knew coming in between nineteen it. It wasn't the biggest impact broke that we I 28 he had attacked. They had Albert is an extra stimulus. And pretty much the road it was over almost in years past that the expectation is that a lot of these earnings report we marketed the double digit growth. They're gonna eat you know in the beta but nonetheless. We're going to see growth and we earnings before a meeting the financial came out pretty strong at Starbucks tastes what's being source scaled up or percent. It's that sort of an open. More than twelve mine their earnings and revenue loss expectation. Overall bill would be pretty strong when it comes BP's. These earnings report that habit and none of them I don't know if you went through some of the leave. Just eat call the copper content but nobody in the opening match to the trade war the only one that we really not comment on that front pin market apple I haven't seen any. Real negative commentary. Within their guided the out its trade war that continued there. I weigh on investors and maybe not so much and. Arts and Andy Kemp is a factor that in as they've moved Florida their business plans between nineteen. Yes pat very possible very possible they don't think anything's gonna happen at the moment march 2 will come and go and the president will find a way to stated you know we're just gonna hold off on the. And then that you know back and forth we'll continue. Look at Christina I think so much for joining us here today we really appreciate it that's Christina parts novelist from Fox Business news. Thank you. If she she brings up some pretty action points about the earnings season we've been having it be it's not like the reports that we had this quarter have knocked the socks and not knock the cover off the ball or anything like that. But what's been more surprising to me is that even in the face of sun. Lackluster earnings reports on that you know came out and you think out this report came out last year this compute beginning absolutely hammered in the market. You investors saying. So it's a bad. After the volatility that we scientists on error. Near investors I've been a lot of you know ready and she thinks yeah yeah I think they have it and she brings up another good point which is concerned you know we haven't had. That type of market volatility that we saw on December in a very long time where the market fell by not quite but very very close to 20%. And I'm wondering if a lot of you know maybe people that were sitting out on the sideline for awhile said Ali here's my chance and go jump in the markets. Fallen 20% and historically after that happens you see big rally. It it almost looks like that given how strongly the markets reacted in January. And you start to become concerned because really all the underlying issues that caused the December. To fall apart are still there and they're still very much there. So. But in you know what I'll take a 56% rally lightened edit and markets currently are up over 1%. A little bit of breaking news right now LaGuardia Airport no flights coming in or out as the FAA as. I believe it's mainly being caused by call outs of TA saying as well as air traffic controllers. We got a text an earlier question from a listener asking you know we had mentioned that the call out rate for TSA agents hit peak of 10% that was on Sunday. They're wondering what the the normal call out rate was a year ago on the same day that same call out rate was. Less than a third of that three point 1% whatever laws wasn't enough the whole flight's right so that kind of is this news here I don't know. You would think that this is orchestrated. All athletes second pay cycle. So today no. Kirk I said. Okay never mind flights are now leaving LaGuardia at the ground stop has fully been lifted at LaGuardia made it look like there's at and less than an hour and a half hour to an hour where there are no flights coming in or out of the Guardia and start seeing us delays and other airports as well I don't personally adelphia and new York and stuff that they're trying to run things. And perhaps I dissipates she lifted now that and it wasn't orchestrate I don't legal news and if they just last hour afflicts. You would think you don't know. If it's possible you know. Using this as a tool but it. If you've got a big big event coming up next not to send him an excellent and really to have that stuff together for it to all go all go correctly says that the big game becomes that becomes concerning that flights now going in and out of the Guardia and hopefully me the ways that we saw. Either get have been Omnia cruise before. I have enough linemen ever had I have never ever used like that surprise in my view all three of us occurred I'm like go with like motion sickness and I just feel like I just hurled these horror stories about people getting CA and being quarantines and my mother when workers a few years back and she got motion sickness to it is no pleasure I get the sense that tigers never really pleased. I know oh I don't play out Edwards a yes. Yeah good to Florida could. And a handful please and Spain but no room bulletin Erica I'm just I'm just teasing there are these new Chris so I've never been on cruise ship flaws that I have with the I really can't you know. Testifies whether or not this good or bad idea doesn't seem to appeal to mean it's a mystery acres to mr. workers just jump on a ship. Be gone for eleven days and the captains and what you know where their government when you get there. I I don't take that though yeah. Is is building up and anticipation and we're going regardless of what if it brings its like. And and Newark new agers. Atlantic City period and is committed to Newark czar and sorry it's in not that against Newark personally and just you know that it does pointing down rather than you know but if the Caribbean. I think it first makes sense Mike to look back a bit at 2018 and talk about some of the big themes that we saw. That move marked create a couple big dips to 10% dips over the course of the year. What caused the more key factors. And just have the ability to add more volatility into both the bond and stock market and it definitely saw that 2008. Mike what are the big things this had an impact in particular in the second half of the years the trade conflict between the US and China how do you see that continuing to affect markets. As we move deeper and between nineteen. Yeah I mean huge huge issue for a second half eighteen really added a lot of volatility in markets then and certainly it's going to spill over 2009 team. When we look ahead here my personal views on it is I think that we probably get something on on the US China trade deal. Ambac financial exchange we've got a whole slew of both him. Interest to business stories but if you breaking news stories it would mean to cover Mike Armstrong Christine Dunn talkers over with you today. I want to cover one breaking news story of which guys hitting a lot of airports nationwide but specifically in the northeast we have LaGuardia Airport. Facing an FAA halt on all flights due to high air traffic control shortages that is impacting flights. At LaGuardia they shut down right before 10 AM today and have reopened at this point but are facing. Delays across the board which is impacting a whole lot of local other airports such as new work. But flights are now coming in and out. Out of LaGuardia. It is in the face of this government shut down which has reached its 35 day today. With doubts employees getting pay. This is the at least today is the day of the second paycheck that they have not received and sooners still in the midst of that we had some votes last night that failed it in my personal opinion and I'm not gonna pretend to be. Did indeed know at all politically anise but he in my opinion it seems like there's a little bit more wiggle room coming out of you know the senate and congress in terms and president trump himself about getting something passed to reopen government here. Right it definitely seems like you know legislators are Stein across party lines and are to try to work together so hopefully the movement will continue and will be able to bring the situation to a close. A lot of different companies. And saying OK we've survived it so far but let's not let it linger. Yeah and ended in airports shut down here you when you start getting into these sorts of issues you start getting into things that really start impacting the economy so I have. More to more to be seen there congress is already shut down for the weekend says that nothing's happening there nothing is likely to happen until next week at least. Map that we rule we will keep you updated other breaking news Roger Stone was arrested this morning former. Campaign. Worked on campaigns just Richard Nixon Ronald Reagan Jack Kemp Bob Dole and of course most recently president Donald Trump. He was arrested this morning on one count of obstruction five counts of false statements and one count of witness tampering. And president Trump's first. Council came out and did make a statement about this by the way. Quote the indictment today does not alleged Russian collusion by Roger Stone or anyone else run the indictment focuses on alleged false statements mr. stone made to congress. If we get any other breaking news on this we will let folks know but he was arrested early morning today in Florida. On those charges. And positive news we do you have. Markets up today. And and a lot of people are saying that that me being because their expectations that the Fed might tolerate a much larger balance sheet. Direct slower it's over and then be out watching I guess next week's meeting about the. Barak yes so fed chair Jay Powell be speaking next week the and the Dow right now is up nearly 300 points about one point 17%. S&P up over 1% NASDAQ up over 1% mainly on you know in spite of the government shut down news and concerns there. Mainly on news that corrected the Fed may reduce how much of the balance sheet runoff they have been doing every month it's been. Tens of billions of dollars every month they might pump the brakes a little bit is the is the rumor at this point in time. We spoke a little bit yesterday about the turmoil in Venezuela and what's happening there but we're starting to see oil prices climb a little bit as it's looking likely that US might impose sanctions sometime in the next few weeks. Right there are definitely concerns that crude exports out of Venezuela could be distracted. And there's risks to production in that country should US sanctions on com through. And you know that has been emit some turmoil politically it's going on in the country. As Venezuela's opposition leader won. Why don't why don't let that stuff yeah I think you are. Not age difference if I get it out Iran. He declared himself interim president earlier this week and he won the backing from Washington and other large parts of Latin America. And that the country's current leader Nicholas in the bureau he's been leaders since 2013. He broke relations with the rest of us. He had this is getting pretty concerning on one side you have the United States Brazil. We've Argentina the United Kingdom and Canada backing one wide oh. On the other hand you have the Russian government as well as the Venezuelan military. I'm continuing. To. Back. President. Just yet Mr. President Durham yeah. Which you know when this sort of thing happens historically we have had some very violent protests by a very violent situations not so much in Venezuela recently but. It it does become concerning. Over the last few years Venezuela has just. Lost a whole lot their ability to produce oil so I'm not terribly concerned about the oil markets that things really do fall apart US has increased its own production groused has definitely helped parents applies here in Venezuela's right now pumping out about a million barrels per day today to give that some frame of reference in the United States alone. We increased our production. Last year by more than two million barrels per days. Were up at nearly 1212 million barrels per day being produced and it states though economic impact. Here is not so significant but it. Big potential person humanitarian issues that Venezuela right now. Have any view. I'm sure that you guys have gotten scam calls before but you know anyone that has been directly impacted. By these financial scans of trying to get cute to wire money so has anyone you know actually fallen prey to this. And you I don't know and you in his fallen prey and followed for. I mean these games yeah really yeah. Yet we don't get the calls I don't know anybody who's actually fall through with that said the big 1 that I am actually spoken to someone who has impacted by this and did fall for it is this. Very specific. One that we see where a family member is either in hospital or in prison. The one that the person that I knew which was actually mentioned in this Wall Street Journal article as well was an attorney summit posing as an attorney calls you and says hey your grandson or Europe or nephew or your brother has been arrested on DUI charges that are car accidents they are in a coma in the hospitals that can't talk to you. And you need to wire 151000 dollars rain cover. This person is now receive medical coverage dollars and prison. And I know somebody that buyers money. Nine days is happening this is happening to me not to and all that person ones or is that too specific. That in that individual was. Between 65 and seven. Cut and so away it is the area very common it is it is frightening that desperation situation. It's it absolutely is. And when your face at that you don't necessarily think logically you don't think about okay well one. This call and please call the police right now and confirm this information yeah say I need to. Help a family member and I do sympathize with the victim because you know the the scammer on the island early sounded you've been out of greed acting job probably sounded desperate and there were 24454. Suspected cases report in 2018 which is a 12% increase over 27 team. And double the number of these types of scams that happened in 2013. To adopt Paul percent. A 12% year over year off and up a 100% since toward their team Kool. Well and think about the eight. Teen demographic we have here we can only expect that to increase speed you're just gonna wanna target tomorrow morning we got an average of 101000 Americans turning sixty to 65 each day now. I mean when you have those kinds of numbers these people are just very very vulnerable. I'm you know I know it yet the report we are taking a look at were talking about how. You know banks and other organizations are trying to figure out how they can help. Yeah because you know they they have no parity inner being as somebody says they wanna go wire money. But if they suspect something. You know you'd think he'd money give them the opportunity to speak up. What laws need to change around. The law's very specifically need to change around what bankers are allowed to do what financial representatives are allowed to do and what they're not allowed to do. Hey if you get a wire requests for instance from a client true. In in any situation and it seems suspect to you you should have at least the right and possibly the the liability to step in and say. This seems suspicious I have the ability to delay this for two hours while researching it I'm gonna do that and there's really only two states at this point have taken that stance. Tennessee and Texas have passed laws at this point. That allow bankers to delay refuse transactions or notify family members who wins the America's respect something but. It that. That is a far cry from peace to be done. And yeah I mean the gulf I just needs to stop I mean whoever's selling these lists of our phone numbers. And some bodies or legislation needs to be passed. Against that some sort of privacy anchors it's just overwhelming I mean. I've gone to the point nauert if I don't reckon as a phone number on my cell or land mine just don't answer if it's important that you leave a voicemail and text. Google rolled that news service on their phones that I like a lot there's a there's days when you when your phone starts ringing in your Google phone now yeah three button you can press answered decline or screen call him and if you press screen called the Google Voice assistant just Hopson and says hey this person's screen your call. Who are you waiting basically. It just transcribe the entire conversation to you alive and then if you say oh this action politics in you can answer it otherwise here's. You can basically tell the computer to respond certain ways to populace to call again interest. It's odd meeting the do not conflict. Yet because you know one of the issues that has also been seeing is some of these numbers are just trying to record your voice. So you pick up the phone and you say knows Mike and their recording that says that they can call your bank and use your voice to log into your account yeah I mean the big thing that they don't know. And this thing that the attorney did you. On record saying here's the word yes pretty much and right that's all they really need so if final record as a I don't picked up yet simple as that. Anti icing getting those calls that it's like Robocop prime and Anthony speaking Chinese alien and I have I got after. First time of the day my gosh that is seen in this cause and I'm wondering how they're getting my number yes and as a. A Purdue was the somebody close to me had a similar situation like that so once. Kind word or vice if you don't know the number don't pick it up and if you are ever asked to send money. Anywhere be very very very suspicious of that I know that are less original bit. More well informed and others but you know speak if you have elderly family members a piano the parents that might not be aware of this they really need to be made aware of it. What university did FDR attending graduate from in 1903. Again what university did FDR attend and graduate from. In 1903. And we will have the answer for via. Abstinence Marshall. Starbucks they released earnings. This morning perhaps overnight they were either released or just an after the after Al. And data recently my way in its. And market wasn't up whenever there is and it's open now and generally speaking the market's pretty happy about what Starbucks released. I was out there saying I think we talked about this last and you're on the show Christine. I didn't really understand their delivery. Modeled what was going on there and how I was in a growing McKeon Allen wasn't sure how to. How to take that but. What they are doing it still seems to be boosting sales. Baird and they're not really seen much of a slowdown domestically or even in China which is just shocking to me. On the take and they said they're taking the long view on China and they celebrated twenty years in the country they did they opened in 18% new stores in China. After an increase of 18% to over the existing stores that they already have there I'm really into. Seeing how other streamline their operations in knots are really where investors are I think are are benefiting them today. As are seeing in the markets but same store sales which is sales at stores open at least twelve months rose 4% in the US. Which is pretty significant. On improvements to CNN and A chain it's been around for his on Starbucks has and that really shows how they are focusing on operations. Some of the things they mentioned was they don't really focusing on improving the customer service. On looking at healthier beverages which I thought was interesting and then of course are going to be rolling out this deliveries. I think Starbucks customer service is probably the best tiger's name. In terms accomplish Americans just. Like the fast food like a company. Any company Starbucks yes ass customer service I would say that and what is it about it I just go in there it's a very pleasant experience and always have a smile on their heroes seems like. Public Trader Joe's you better Trader Joe's. The other back they're very they're very and they're probably pretty class if that is up I've never seen anyways happy and friendly strategist and yet it is it is pretty wild but this out of just but in top of the customer services like the consistencies are always there were Starr looks as if they get something wrong the correct it right away it will. Such a breaks and technologists and it really did very well better for four bucks coffee date that a correct he's. That's. Needs to sixty for medium. So. The big thing that we have talked about a year after years there online ordering they have I think taken the lead in terms any count any fast food company that has in mobile happily placed orders online and go pick it up there. They were the first there and they you know they. Keep finding new ways stupid. People spend more money on these apps than they do in person and it's really adding to the bottom line. While listening to be sent him in match and waiting for you and a little coronary when he document or against all the mobile. Order well it's it's it's a godsend is I think the lesson for me here's just never bet against against company where all your customers are addicted to your product fashion doubts at funerals. Addiction and so there's also Mark Wallace. But I still concerned the delegate that Dunkin' Donuts and you know eat their lunch a little bit over the next few oh yeah I'm a director's CEO of the first quarter gross Starbucks in terms of their delivery and if if Duncan is stern have maybe put a dent in there bottom line or anything like that because there are shifting. Their focus to improving their spurs so selections and that's brutal I see is at Dunkin' Donuts the best Dunkin' Donuts store that I've been into. Very easily compete Starbucks but the yen worse jump into a store I've been in two is just a joke yet awful right. And that's. But all I don't stories that they're gonna have to renovate asthma rated best for their service under the new brand India there a franchise re solved yet as a franchise and I don't know if a 100% of them protester. But I think a majority of them I'm not sure you may be right. That and that that makes it more difficult to maintain qualities that today feud that's the problem Starbucks are owns all their stores so really easy to say no we're doing this hour. So the stock by the way Starbucks stock is up three over three and a half percent. Right now and this stock right now trading at 67 dollars and eleven cents five years ago. Was traded about 35 bucks so. While not a not a bad little jump out that not a battle jump. Intel on the other hand. Is having a little bit of a rough go of it as well as pretty much all the chip makers out there. Pointing to a pre slowing demand for their chips into in nineteen. And specifically the data sent chips right. They were they were Slaney CNET that revenue. For that group outside about 200 million yes I was disappointing to a lot of investors. They also cited a slowdown with their business in China stocks down 6% is a quick break we'll be right wreck but the answer trivia. We're talking about last minute planning techniques that can help you save your assets. Todd we've always talked about married couples in the past. What can be done to save the assets for a win over or single person. You know that's really important because we see that more and more today you know you've got people who have lost spouses our dealer or like Satan and it never got merit planning has. Even last minute planning works for them example let's say you have a house and you have some money and you get sick and you go in the nursing home. People are gonna fail I got to write the check. Maybe not call right because what we would do is we would allow that house to be considered non accountable for users away for us to do that even when you're single and you're not living there so they want. Count they might lead but they won't count and then the money. Depending on your rage we can do one of two things we can either buy and Medicaid annuity for you which would stretch out the money over a long period of time allowing you to pay a Medicaid rate which is about six grand a month vs fifteen grand a month private pay so huge leverage there. Or if you if the medicated knew what he doesn't work out you can do something called a pooled trust where you take assets and put it in such a special trust that allows you to get eligible for Medicaid. It may sound complicated but Cushing and dole has written a guide especially for those of you who have put off doing your planning and are now faced with a last minute nursing home situation request this brand new guide from Cushing and dole and by dialing. 8668485699. We haven't heard a ton about FaceBook recently. They've been you know kind of trying to stay out of the media but Zuckerberg. Made an inch in play published a guy gets an op Ed in the Wall Street a thousand words thousand rattled. You know quick thing in the Wall Street Journal and at its core stuff we party here at the nets in time about how we don't sell specific user data how we help small businesses. You know lots of lots of stuff that. We've heard Zuckerberg say before and Tim by some that I don't buy a piece of it but there inching that he published in the journal in the first place. Yeah absolutely I mean that's a clear sign that he is trying to reach a very specific audience the readers of the wall street journal of course. Leaders in business and in policy a lot of policy makers created and so clearly he is making an appeal to that audience. It'd be. Article notes house small businesses actually time and spend a lot of time using FaceBook as as a low cost way to try to reach their audiences. There are more than ninety million small businesses on FaceBook. That's but in this case he now on Zuckerberg clearly making an appeal to that the bigger the bigger players. Yet. Andy is going to be more countered FaceBook has released their earnings next Wednesday January 30 and just a lot of questions. About. You know are there going to be fine if they're fine that's not gonna come out of your earnings call addicting people are you looking at on the hearings to all those. Have users dropped at all. So far they really haven't if you look at Pittsburgh business. The stock is down. Son you know thirty to 40% off highs they reached back in July. That was when all these stories began breaking back Cambridge where addicts. And number of different stories. Their users really haven't really haven't been the issue it's morbid initiative okay well what are you have to change going forward about your business to make sure that this is happening now now on their earnings call when that comes up here. Will we see figures are sales figures on there FaceBook portal device. Today disclosed that they probably break out revenue by segment CO policy gen hardware. Where number would be mine gases that's the first thing me. Unveil I think in terms of baseball great I think that's it would these apartment they've never idea and a side very accuracy if that was any success during the holiday season big advertising. Spent huge advertisements now. I just don't see the values there I mean it it's literally a bigger version of face time. I see the value I don't see. Value trust in the company to put that. They're not her work. Ride marking him more concerning the fact that they've allowed a lot of days to be stolen when Yost. That's a big divisive camera and your attention now and that's got to also can I just thought the timing is not the best and yeah. I'll also be interesting to see the demographics because. Maybe users haven't taper off they've really acquiring new Nina generations like unseemly to use. Do keep in mind that FaceBook on since two and that's where they're seeing that audio growth. And that that remains a big growth engine for them. And if they can continue to monetize that. Could continued growth engine for them go forward. The other thing that if FaceBook and a lot of other tech CEOs are working on is housing in San Francisco which seem a little bit strange but it'd be the mayor San Francisco. And a few other legislators head. Kind of floated around like we with a tech. Company tax to start building housing and Agassi posters and a prompter breaks with what just what do shell over some money just called. I don't like faced ex CEO's foundation. And done and other companies are the cantor is not 500 million dollars for the separate in the San Francisco area trying to build at least 8000 new homes in the Bay Area with in the next decade. They've already raised 260 million. Including funds from Morgan Stanley and Genentech. That figure we saw earlier this year Tucker where there are sitting like the minimum income that you need to make it I'd be at a live in San Francisco properly was like over a 100000 dollars oh yeah out of something absurd. Felt like not a lot of people can afford pretty much the the something ridiculous it's amazing I mean they were saying that 50010. The region in the San Francisco region over there is gained more than 700000. Jobs. But has only built just over a 100000 housing units that just shows you right there at the supply and demand as a swing at a. I saw that I also think I'm trying to find the stories I saw somebody paying like thousand dollars plus for a apartment for their caps on massive fine. It's a scale of that. Seem Siri can find. Just a quick Google search brother or Christine. Says the study found a unique to earn a about a 1101000. Dollars to live comfortably in San Francisco and a culture. If those 2018. Saw the market reached new highs but they were short lived in the year ended with a thud as far as investors are concerned. So I'm not sure I fully understand how this is possible we're talking many Amazon in the first hour of the show. And you know some of the stuff that you can get on there like you can now buy a proprietary Amazon bed coming up pretty soon batteries inch records. But apparently now you can buy a hospital room and haunt him as a. It just so it's odd that I thought I I know that he. I don't think you view the and talk Turkey by a hospital. On Amazon I mean if you can't if you're on the show over the shell out 300 grand maybe you can buy now possible and what is it. 285000 bucks on average that's a bargain and tigers you know. So well the hospital room. Watson widely doing this well I think what's happening here is so traditionally all the hospitals would go chew. David go to use these medical suppliers. GP goes toe to bile that health care supplies and there's a lot of complaints about these companies really worse transparent about how much they were charging for their goods and Amazon's come out and really. Started to make a dent in the medical supply arraign them. Where there you know transparent about cost. Quick about shipping and a apparently a lot of hospitals about than buying supplies everything from a bed pans to syringes. From Amazon and there's this company out there that manufactures. Like smarts and new hospital Abrams and soon they basically it shipped out in shipping containers they all accrued at least one bedroom one bathroom. And customizable so you can't fully customizable and the outcome of the document a bad it's a hospital room in a box so. I mean this is a little bit nuts but I think what's happening years are saying about. All of these hospital buyers these administrators are shopping on ams on site we need to have our product out there's that's I think what's happening. But yeah you can go by an actual hospital managers and ams I just did the the search team on Amazon for a hospital room to find one. Melamed yeah it popped up well like him search and toilet paper's open a hospital harmed as a pop up navy needs special access now it says so we're gonna take a quick break coming up. Luckily I didn't go according did they are apparently back up and running but I would think that a limited capacities. That's. And I'm gonna have a bad enough time probably pick in the after that Obama. Luckily here can yet. I would I would think you are good luck. You know we're right in the middle of earnings season I'm sure you can go through a few of them but let's talk a little bit about caterpillar were getting their report on Monday. You know what shall we be looking for. You know I think every variation is risky just what impact at a lower. Steal from China's looting and obviously I don't we already active. Companies like apple bit him well worn potential we sit there and it. Good years so I think that you know I think it could be a problem. You know Chinese have beaten more the war caterpillar. Yeah we have the weather there is a lot of work there on the industrial side. Is there a type of you know Latin approximately that it means that at least Starbucks. Today. You know in. Things worse still going well China of course the big difference between. Now expect a lot today and expensive. Bulldozers snacks debaters. I think you know. We. I was gonna say it was expecting some pretty disappointing Starbucks numbers from China at a lot of it is our. But yet Q4 I think this is the second full quarter where we had these trade tariffs and place. I mean we didn't seem to see bad bad impact in Q3 but it did these duties compound overtime. Yeah it was about forty million dollar aid to earnings are in the third quarter or not. Think if you share but it's not. Yoga break the bank of course her company in part to cap. But you know I think what possible interest in that he did they need it to be between your million in two originally here they indicated. That. The lower end of that range but you know but still no it. Dear you know there really aren't gonna think about the businesses that caterpillars and yet sure they have via tiny little machines that deer and other companies compete with it. Nobody really competes with caterpillar on the scale that they have when you talk about large earth moving machines all the way down to you know small things you pay up at Home Depot and Lowe's. But it shouldn't. As China becomes a bigger part of their business do we start to get concerned about Chinese companies and you know intellectual property and knock offs and what has caterpillar sad about that pass. Yeah I happen or that they. Should have been. Now whether or not there would be those similar worried that a lot of big tech firms that. The why increased competition. Round China I think there is don't be you know. G the Georgia manufacture outside equipment. But it could yeah. And I think upon march mean you've mentioned here ought to Japan and another check in maker industrial equipment I think that probably. The bigger risk for caterpillar competitive you know we. Chinese companies coming in. You know manufacturing. Debaters and bulldozers but that is now per you know cheaper price of the unit there at the risk. The cheap to. That can to protect. With regard view church. How about how much your domestic barriers obviously all the talks about a border wall right now bit. If that's due do we have any chance of getting a big infrastructure infrastructure projects and how big would that be for caterpillar. Yes that would be too if it edit something I did not mention specifically. This story completely talk. I think you're right they obviously if the government to apple reopened to be right. Back Saturday Darby have been moderately I'd. He had that happen. Possible to actually. You know I know a couple of like the area. And that the other two. Why exactly should be bonded out on that I think most democratic leaders. Out. The other infrastructure politics and all the expo on the you know. Structure built highways that are that that they eat the hair that that's something that president trump would buy into as well. And between XP and wouldn't shock me. If there in inhabited the infrastructure deal in question. When exactly. How if I. I. Actually trolley. All that you know depending on the magnitude. Yeah and better or at the picture yet for. Tough to make bets on something like that when there's so many other external factors going on Paul really appreciate coming on have a great weekend we will talk to you next week Paula Monica from CNN business talking to us about caterpillar. There earnings coming up next week and everything else can expo. You know. MMS which a little bit from infrastructure and and and caterpillar for just next I find this story to be really really inch staying. My wife just went back to work after her maternity leave she works for Fidelity Investments here in the Boston area. They've made this article in particular mentions a few studies that points out that a six month. Maternity leave is really sweet spot which is unheard of here domestically. Yeah I mean definitely unheard of I remember when I had my first two kids. You know I had twelve weeks which is you know consider tennis at the time and then I was able to soon syndication times I just I just really. Tried to save up as much as I could say it's Nike is close to three and a half four months as I possibly can yeah. But it's I remember thinking at the time wow. You know moms haven't really rough here. After my first. And child I am getting very very set they've gone after six months because there's just so tired dads it was just hard to keep up the pace. So this study that saying that six months seems to be the sweet spot for paid parental leave I have to say I completely agree that basic experience yeah. And you know the instinct thing is that the market demands have really pushed this up at least over the last three years you've seen a lot more companies offering. Pretty generous. Pretty generous packages to expecting mothers or even folks adopting. NEC and to leave. Bump up a little bit as well by you were the only developed country that doesn't offered as part of a national policy I don't I can't really imagine that's changing any time soon. Yeah I mean we can only hope that people come to their senses on this one I have to say I have a lot of friends who live overseas and they all got six to eighteen months ago and it made a huge difference in terms of their desire to return to work. Their motivation to do sell and to pursue their careers death. And and it was very significant to me to see the number of people actually every here who I knew who are proof you know. Advanced degrees and everything drop out yet because it to sit and see the point where is my friends are receives all seated in Massachusetts there's. Pass something for Tony Tony arm and make him not a I don't know I'm making I'd I'd. I completely on AME and he had the market demands will drive this up a little bit over time. There seems to be a lot of support from both sides of the aisle in 80% of Americans fear that we should having national policy on paid return so. Quickly checking in on markets right now the now he's still up about 1% S&P and NASDAQ all in positive territory about 1% as well.
