This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Earnings season continues to be in full swing today a whole bunch of companies reporting we got airlines we got banks we've got consumer companies we got car makers just about everyone out there. Reporting this week next week and then the following week. As we head into February the US government chipped and continues entering its 34 Dave. And also big news out of Japan Karl's goal and an update on his situation. As he tries to get himself out of jail where he's been trapped for over two months now chuck not a Mike Armstrong autocracy over here. And let's start with earnings Mike and cares if there's anything that stood out to you. Now with some of the companies that reported. This morning in particular. Well I mean Ford was definitely up there on the list of things to look at so we've they reported earnings that were. Not. Bad and when he eighteen it ten point two billion dollars and operating income. But the big issue that we saw was that they lost money in just about everywhere but North America. Big big losses in China a you can see here. If forts kind of at this I think pivot points to determine how much do they go all in on just producing big cars and suvs in North America verses how much they keep that you're trying to cater towards their international business which really hasn't been. Getting a whole lot attract. No I mean it again what when you have a ten point two billion dollar profit in North America will lose three billion dollars combined everywhere else. It suggests that OK you've got the North American market figured out largely because. Thank you make two good vehicles that people by F series pickup truck in the Ford Explorer that's that's where the ball go forward sales and profits come from. Are those vehicles in the US. It's suggest me a little bit of a problem that they can't figure out how to make money anywhere else right. Think that's that's not good in NN that's being overly simple and simple find things but it's. When you are so dependent on one or two products. That creates problems worry down the road will no further than what we saw with apple in the fourth quarter of last year. If you're dependent on one or two products in suddenly there's a shift in their regime change far as what people are buying and why they're buying it. That's just some issues in. Especially as we can go through we've gotten it and say that we're going to be talking about later. With GM looking to really start working towards. Electrified pick up trucks. Hey that's an area where it if gas all of a sudden becomes more expensive for any reason and boards behind the eight ball there. Look I know everyone gloves there F 150 in a pony people who drive men who love them. But if gas goes up to 56 bucks a gallon at some point in forge behind the curve there. That's a problem. Yeah it it you know I think there's a couple ways to look at this there have been a lot of companies in history live. Really the him. In specialists and they've been able to profit on that idea of specialized and I think maybe that is the direction that Ford needs to go here because there clearly. Failing when it comes to producing smaller cars and trying to figure at the trends in foreign markets they're just not doing it well so fort wants to become just the big big vehicle specialist and and maybe that's the way they need to go. You're right they need did they do need to stay on you know the front end of trends when it comes changes there might developing electric vehicles and things like that. But maybe that's what they do need to do here is. Just focus on bigger vehicles and get away from you know what's been failing overseas does that mid says there should be as a successful the Ford Escape to ignore or escape than Ford Edge I think they do fairly well in the segments but. You're competing with the rap for honest here V they're definitely and sturdy feel. At bass in a best yeah yet don't give a new lease on Tuesday some programs out there as well. So I don't know how well that that one does in their big suvs face yeah I territory the explorer really dog dominates that whole space and in the pick up truck sprays obviously a crushing pairs well. You know looking at just some sales figures are pulling him up for some of the smaller Ford trucks you know looking at you know four edge and things like that. The edge in 2018 sold about a 134000. Units so it's be it it's a good number it's not bad. But it is it's not doing what the route forwarded its not doing. You know what the Nissan rogue give to those are both the 300 to 400000 nautical range. So they've they've got something there that at least has kind of a baseline but it's not giving up into the numbers. You know really that day that they want to see him pulling up some additional data just in those those areas is trying to kind of hone in. On on some of them so if we take a look at Nissan just as an example. And look at you know of the models that are doing well for Nissan discuss again this is a company that as of ten or fifteen years ago didn't really have. Any major product to sell the other have been put some different things enough that really stood out. You know you you look at the rogue at this point and and what they've been able to do there. And that this sales numbers are just through the roof in the last couple years because this was a product that I'm trying to think of when the Nissan rue came out you remember. Our guys are the only mid it was all we have now looked a might have an older so okay it actually goes back inserted 2007 was the first look at them they sold 171000. Vehicles in that first year. It's 4121000. Rogues last year now 403000. The year before so. These are just massive massive numbers compared to what Ford's doing. And looked at to a certain extent these other companies like in the east and the kind of dependent on this niche now as opposed to go for being dependent on pick up trucks. So it's just everyone's kind of got that little area but I just I look at Ford and they're so heavily influenced by gas prices just because of you know but the type of vehicles they are. That is it just it's something that does worry me a little bit going forward is pay and I know he got great pickups and of the explores agreed vehicle. What else can you do. I think they're just an error grip punting on the Sydney and altogether I know there are multiple sedans but not even tab one sedan anymore really. I don't know I just feel like when gas prices do go up a bit more like you guys said. You know people got awarded scurry back to you know the sedan the reliable sedan. We'll see I'm I'm less convinced as I do think it's a really big risk for them to be playing here but it has the potential if they really just wanna focus on the big vehicles and that's what they're going to focus on and you can build efficiencies in their in there. Supply lines that they can really shift production pretty quickly then perhaps is the way to go because they clearly have not had success. Domestically or internationally with a smaller vehicles so I mean to some degree focus on what you gonna which is building these big beat the suvs and pickup trucks is concerned their profit margin fell last year four point 4%. And compared to GM at 8% so a you have really declining profits and you need to address its end up by the way the Toyota Ralph four last year it sold 427000. Copies so get about four times as many. Vehicles sold there is the Ford Edge which is near probably the closest competitor there in a pool of data on the Honda CRV as well right now. Nam which last year sold 379000. Copies so you know overall edge look it's it's got -- a foothold here. But it's him the take it to the next level I think it's unclear at this moment. Beyond whether or not before it can can really gain traction there just because their sales on that vehicle. Have and pretty much the same for the last four years now over in that 12140. Range. But not any higher some other companies that reported this morning whole bunch airlines American jetBlue. Southwest all reporting and an owner of American Airlines stock actually. And all these companies. Diving a little bit higher than than analysts were expecting. Heading into the upcoming year American in particular when I looked at their guidance they guided towards 550 to 750 a share. Consensus was typically about 59 do you share heading into this so. I think what you've who glean from these airline earnings is that at least four. You know those types of purchases those. Not overly expensive like a new car new house but moderately expensive purchases you know we talked but air travel it's you know 45600. Bucks it's. It's not buying a new car for 20000. At least consumers. At this point appear to be willing to shell out that money Stew bit still in not necessarily making any cutbacks today. They did and you know you mission that they're doing pretty well they're up between neo for a three and a half and six percents depending on which airline you're looking at today. This is you know this is a bit of a surprise we had a lot of airlines talking about the fourth quarter and just some concerns they were seeing in terms of demand for flights how full their planes were we saw statistic the other day that more flights are. Having empty seats in and so he. This was a bit of a surprise and a bit of a positive guidance for 2019. To the upside so good news for the airlines. A in spite of you know what have been some some drags on the business few texts. In regarding the SUV conversation we're having earlier 71 saying. I have a Ford Edge love having him buying another this year it's got 485000. Miles currently. From 413. GM and Ford make ugly as looking bland cars for a couple decades now and what I guess we have someone who's not a big GM fan. And then also from 508. Bear the Mazda CX five is going to make a dent in some some of these numbers this year. Is my guest so. Certainly it seems like a lot of people talk about these kinds of vehicles so it it kind of matches up with the sales numbers. That we've seen also continuing to stick with the auto sector. Some. I don't know this is good news or bad news Carlos don't. He has resigned as the CEO of Renault. He's still being detained in Japan up to right now at least so going on north of two months. I would imagine this starts to clear the way for him to eventually get released. But he's no longer in charge of Renault at this point pretty difficult to operate company can only communicate with your attorney for two months audit on emailed them the prison now I. They'll let me let me let me just get on the Gmail and instructions to the rest of the workers are fifteen minutes today I skip has gotten a so don't resigning as the CEO of Renault like I never noticed tandem. I don't think they wanted to admit any fault necessarily silly I think there's Nissan and it is questions right now so this Renault was expected to name. Hillary bowl race I don't know how to pronounce discuss some awful French pronunciation so I don't know but Terry bull rail arguments Paula. Is expected to take over for mr. go he's the deputy CEO of Renault at the moment. And so I don't know if that necessarily is a big enough departure in terms of you know potentially being able to gain his release I don't know if you he's someone who shares. Jones views and so forth as far as trying to unify the company. But this is. I think it's four for certain whether it's over it's probably a step closer. To go on being released they'll know when that will occur in I mean potentially but I would've thought this would be well resolved so knows. Where you take a break now but we come back we're going to be talking about one of the topics that. Notes or solicit some kind of reaction from him announcer one at the moment but whether or not flight attendants should be tipped that's coming up after this break on the financial exchange. The title of the article on the Wall Street Journal is now flight attendants have to hustle for tips it's not quite the case in a lot of cases but it does raise. You know some interesting points about where. Working as a flight attendant is going to in in in today's world so to give me an update just on where things stand Frontier Airlines. Which started allowing in pulling tips for flight attendants a few years back. This year began allowing individual flight attendants to collect tips from passengers. Which is not something I believe other airlines really do it all or even encouraged in any meaningful way. What you do receive from a number of other airlines American united delta spirit frontier and I believe jetBlue is well. Do have flight attendants who. Make pitches in the cabin to bail offer co branded credit cards with the airline. And they get paid in some cases you as much as fifty dollars action and realize that. As if you're that must be the case but yet they they get a commission that they they get a commission if someone signs up for credit card on the flight name and they've sold that credit card effectively. So there's 22 separate issues here on on the commission side of things. I don't really have a problem with that the companies trying to sell its products and you know of the usually it's just you know you get him. Plain and you know you get them back to your seat and there's you know something or sign up for this card get 40000 bonus miles and hey if you yet taken to the flight attendant. They get you know commission for doing so I don't really have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is. Airlines asking me to be the person that properly compensate a flight attendant for doing their job that they paid to do when the. First place a wise for a answered doing this I don't I'd probably because they contract either people not giving contract negotiations with their flight plans for the last three years to raise. And this is there waived so when. Frontiers being a bunch this tightwad and be in cheek while and now they want us. To pay the flight attendants Charlie and I pretty much vowed to not fly frontier again because of issue I had with them a few years back any way this makes it so much worse I zero interest armed frontier. I soon spirits humid the next one to jump on the line here it I mean. To me to be reasonable it's pretty much the same thing all the airlines have already been doing is they're finding ways to music transfer more of the cost of the flight to the past. That's bid baggage fees that we're tasked on the last few years that's another way of pushing that over to the passenger. Tipping no I I really dislike this way of doing things. It's not my responsibility. To make your company's employees are properly compensate if you wanna charge additional fees than just make them additional mandatory fees don't put that awkward process of tipping are not tipping. The flight and there's the entire flight on on the past exactly is it just bitches awkward it's terrible experience for the flight attendant it's terrible experience that passenger. Not winning but it's. And think about like. I hear it here's a can terrible situation let's say that you go to despite by TV. Did you go in tipped the salesperson there for buying it's not know that they they're getting paid properly by the company whether it's commission whether it's salary whatever it is. They're getting paid proper why does your sister but Butler played dials that. Inform you walk into a bar and order a Jack Daniels yet. Different industry tip the bartender you walk onto a plane in order to acting as you don't took the fight and that brings to your next victory. No because the bartender doesn't really have a salary or. I mean depends where you go. Right by. And it and I did as I've made the case before that. For things like that I think that those people should be paid more. In upbeat tip wage and I know a lot of people in the restaurant industry disagree with me in that OK but is there there are different opinions on this. But I don't think me as a consumer. It should not be my responsibility. And make sure that a person is well paid that's the job of the employer yet and so. I just I I hate when this stuff gets punted because it's like. What will look this is not my problem like if they're if the if these people are trying to earn a living as an employee. It paid them eight living wage as an employee are hard. So this does take us to our poll question of the day up right now on financial exchange showed dot com. Should flight attendants beat tipped it's a simple yes or no answers the cancer again it's a financial exchange show dot com. And he can also text us at 63566. If you have. Any. Any thoughts on this as well maybe you hate the idea of tipping point may be don't you run well here maybe you've been on frontier and haven't experienced that you'd like to share. But let us I know by the way text from where's this coming from 612. What was the 612 rare find out that's a new one forming or not this what I was an airline captain for 31 years of the major airline. And rarely saw that it's given that usually. A hundred dollar bills that was you know at a charter something like that for sports charters. As a flight crew our responsibility is safety and I think it's totally unprofessional to even consider allowing the cabin crew to solicit. Tips Minnesota apparently yeah Minneapolis Minnesota and we got witness noted how about that that's great. Did the the only situation I have ever been and where I felt that I would like to tip an airline employees. I've been on plates where my kids are being terrible and that is some of the flights and have been absolutely marvelous in terms of helping me out they'll carry when my kids for a minute wall why didn't bring the other way into the bathroom and in that situation I've I've you know wind I thanked him profusely and want to tip them that it has never seemed appropriate but I don't dodges Texas the word no. If you're voting in the poll like go to our website financial change showed up comic cast your vote. That's eight to Nazi purchase bendable. But you can text us -- other songs if sure you have others thoughts that you think might be interesting for us to read at some point you can Texas those but other than this note that we just read we will not be reading and yeses or no. If you take a look at their twelve month track record really done incredibly well but today they are down over 11% on their earnings missed that they had this morning. Either reported earnings about a buck sixty share that shy of estimates of a dollar 68. There adjusted earnings per share came in shy as well quarterly sales came in shorts and really just across the board lowered expectations and their growth outlook so. Stock is coming down quite a bit but again keeping in mind that is still well below the well above their 52 week hello. By the way admit McCormick just to put in perspective they do about four billion dollar four and a half billion dollars in sales a year. A whole lot of spice to the people are gone by since what struggled a bit about Texas Instruments I see they're up about 6% today. It's been a rough road for semiconductor stocks recently but what's going on here. It has UK I think. This is the result of what was a pretty decent quarterly report in spite of being big headwind so. They beat John earnings by two cents their revenue came in line. Just like every other chip company they are citing slowing demand they're citing issues with China but that was all kind of baked into the price going into this because all you chipmakers have been following that same issue are stock is up nearly six bucks on this news 6%. And so that is Wall Street watch presented by leader banks Z deposit program call 781641. 8691 for more information or visit them on line and Z deposit dot net member FDIC. Let's take go and check in the text on just see here we go this one seems right up my Alley as far as responses. This is from 262 whip where's that. 262. People booked up. Wisconsin geez we got everyone from Wisconsin and Minnesota today list and I guess talk. Yeah I guess so up that's a listener. So that's a good debut right there are 262 says tipping has gotten so we're out of control you're expected to tipped everyone under the sun now. And I think it really discredits restaurant industry workers that actually make 26263. In our deal and that's all I have to say about bath and I I tend to agree it's it's look it's it's not my job properly pay employees and every industry okay. Went when I go to. The supermarket we're talking in a lot of cases people who are paid minimum wage to begin okay out. Do you do you go to the supermarket cashier if they bring you up really quickly melt. And then why are we talking about tipping flight attendants who make more than minimum wage. The pressure that we all fame we've talked about this before but there growing pressure that awkwardness is those iPad. Cash registers are they spin it around yet the yet to be fuels in a room yup. And and that's a zapper and the flights to you can't pay for cash pay cash for drinks on flights today or it's all credit cards. Yes every text today needed to hear every driver is it isn't it rumors responsibility and that's another one where the whole draw to perform initially was. Chipping was built into the price that that was the entire draw initially and Andy rolled out same thing here. Okay well we cannot appease people more or we can just building tipping to our happens that'll that'll congress it's so. Here's the other thing that that I think of when when we talk about like potentially and when where this came up is near a number of airlines most notably frontier starting to get into BM tipping flight attendants. What about all the other people that are involved in flight operations if you don't you ever see the baggage handlers. You know our flight attendants gonna share their tips with baggage handlers and what about the people that are filled up the up plane with fuel. Like how how'd they get tipped so it it just it doesn't make sense it's not like it kitchen in a restaurant where yet you tip your waiter. In they see they go back and seal the kitchen staff they can pooled tips and do whatever they want there. Like are you gonna share these tips with every member of the company like how does that work it just makes no sense from an aviation standpoint to me at all. Yeah on the fact that look the job of flight crew is to get you from point a to point B safely. It's not to get you that beer as quickly as possible. It's to make sure that no one dies on planes in generally were really really good at doing okay. We have next year let's talk about this story at a Massachusetts. Governor Charlie Baker filing a bill. To try to help police fight impaired driving now that marijuana is legal in Massachusetts. And I think this is a big issue that a lot of people have been concerned about it as to use the fact that there is no current test out there that accurately identifies when someone. Geez. You know under the influence of TH seawall a driving you cannot test for it in the moment you test or someone has used in. You know the previous. Few weeks. Or perhaps even months but you cannot accurately say after at this point in time is their biological test like a press riser that actually test how in the green from their lawn and Charlie bakers kind of saying well in spite of that I still wanna have the ability to test that pilot test or do you step out that if. I were any kind of engineer who knew anything about how marijuana worked I would be spending. Millions of dollars to develop now let's Eliza Africa's every police department in the country is going to need. What looked alcohol marijuana breathalyzer within the next five years. Unfortunately it's gonna take probably upwards of five years to develop this detail it sounds like it's two to four years away era now hire three to five years away excuse me. Because obviously the challenges you know we all know that TH the stays in your system for two weeks yet got a longer half life that out and alcohol to get out of your system and so it's so currently the way it worked you get pulled over and a yes to me to biological test you can refuse it and there's not much of a penalty these new laws -- say if you refuse the biological test. And you can lose your license for six months just like the way if you refused a breathalyzer test per let's listen simpler now it. You know I think is really easy to us that you could use that is completely an invasive to figure out of some time to put a Taco Bell and considerate to put down a to step tested one yes you would really hold a taco in front of them in do you like what they do or murder and then you ask them if there's life after death. And see how they caught suffice like I guarantee you if you do those two things you put a taco in front of someone in as the team and what happens when we die. Guarantee you you'll be able to figure out if their high. I'd I would graduate 99%. Certainty I think that's better than biological test that level Mohamad has there's another question aghast if you want weirdest sound go when you stop listening to. If they're not high they'll look at you like what they taught if they are. Was it that you give a you know like they've got our eyes bulge out of their head. Yeah and yeah they're probably baked out a Maya that like it's very simply don't need to do all these blood test just asked the deep philosophical questions that are inherently meaningless and they'll somehow figure it out yeah. Well I think that's the solution thanks John there you go if boast 118 southern market reaching new highs but they were short lived in the year ended with a thud as far as investors are concerned. Continue to talk a little bit about airlines a symphony one. Saying we had an airline that contract to delta the fuel and load their planes when you checked in there is a fuel charge of a hundred dollars. That would cause people to melt down like I can imagine that would cause people to melt down if you know you unexpectedly get it with a hundred dollar charge you checking in for fuel which. You kind of need to get where you're going to rat you know it's like no one ever cigarette that was built and just kind of figured that that was B of built into the ticket that you paid for. Some news for apple they apparently just dismissed over 200 employees. From what they're calling project titan which is there autonomous vehicle group to meet the signals one of two things either either making just and some changes and pivots within this group. Beat maybe they've well guess what three things beat maybe they've figured stuff out they don't need these people anymore. Or seat maybe they haven't figured things out they're given coupled. I think again implement I had been due from the beginning and I kind of questioned why apple is trying to get into this it didn't seem like an area that they should have a whole lot of expertise in. And days yet they employ a lot of engineers but they really didn't have exposure to this I know people say we'll needed as Google and Google's the front of the pack on and in terms of autonomous driving but. I don't know I just never really seemed to fit into Apple's big goals they really want to get into health care and an IA didn't seem to fit and we'll see what happens they they're not admitting here that they're shutting down the unit or that they are you shifting yet but. This to me indicates that it hasn't been working out quite as anticipated in the moving on. To me. Apple would its core it's a company that specializes. In hardware that works and user experience that's easy to get into. So for me when I look at it like healthcare and medical devices and things like that hey I think I think there's like that's where I do think they should focus I think that's really interesting. Because it's things that they already do well they need to learn some specifics about health care now works. But it's hey let's build a good user experience for you know health related tech because it doesn't really exist today anywhere else so. This you know again we've talked about it. Neither of us really thought this was a key kind of core fit for them but the health care stuff I think is really. Really interest staying one other story that I wanna do it this segment here. Partly just to make fun of CNBC's headline. American and Amazon debuts its adorable delivery rogue robots got the sub headline. I think it first makes sense Mike to look back a bit at 2018 and talk about some of the big themes that we saw. That move markets create a couple big dips to 10% dips over the course of the year. What caused the more key factors. And just have the ability to add more volatility into both the bond and stock market it definitely saw that to pass to Mike what are the big things this had an impact in particular in the second half of the years the trade conflict between the US and China how do you see that continuing. To affect markets as we move deeper in the 2019. Yeah I mean huge huge issue for a second half eighteen really added a lot of volatility in markets then and certainly it's going to spill over 2009 team. When we look ahead here my personal views on it is I think that we probably get something on on the US China trade deal. Before the end of the year present don't think the president trump once you head into a reelection season with eight giant economic headwind. Looming over so that's my personal view but it's really tough to tell folks there. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. The stories that are making the rounds in. In financial news this morning. Earnings season continues a whole bunch of companies reporting from airlines to car makers chipmakers. What do make stuff is pretty much reporting right now. Government shut down entering its 34 day many government workers expected to miss their second paycheck tomorrow. Which starts to put them into. The danger zone as far as being able to pay their bills. In any meaningful fashion. And other news continued updates on the US China trade negotiations. There deal's big that I'm missing my gets we got a whole bunch of earnings but I don't think there's anything else that's making huge news today just an economic circles there's a little bit of a political crisis happening in Venezuela right now that as a potentially get ugly but it's not really making any waves economically at the moment economic Renault with. That is a big deal. You know the United States Brazil Canada all. Recognizing. The UK the UK as our officer Argentina has recognized that what's with the opposition leader's name. Oh boy. I couldn't tell I'd I'd know what I read this morning but I can't tell you the guy who's in power right now has been to a world. Tracts and by the way the Venezuelan military just said that they are siding with mid Derosa says the potential to get pretty ugly for the. Opposition yes on one side you have Russia and the bureau in the Venezuelan army and the other side you have the United States. UK Brazil. Argentina all backing the opposition leader Dave yeah it's it's got the potential to guess quite quite ugly this gets gets violent here. Yet the the other side by the way the opposition leader. Who was in December elected the president of the Venezuelan assembly. And so he effectively is camp tried to take power in the last few days now. Ands and still can't pull up his name. One. Why don't. GUA idea I'm not sure if that's correct pronunciation Oprah I'll go with that Donald Trump officially recognized him and and Brazil Argentina Canada and it leads you tale follows suit. So remains to be seen exactly. Where this is going to go but this could turn into a little bit of a a little bit of a tinderbox up his new Venezuela's economy particulars anything to write home about in fact pretty awful right now yeah but just in terms of the opposing forces that are kind of viewing. Is a proxy in some sense of heads on one of those fortunate unfortunate situations is incredibly oil rich country so there's going to be blame way to whoever's feat that ends up in power there that they're just trying to nukes here grabbed the oil reserves. And by age. I think they experienced 1000%. Inflation last year just. I'm fathom. In other news we talked a little bit about earnings Ford with one of the bigger earnings reports this morning just in terms of I think its impact on the company where they're going in the future. Good numbers in the US there at a profit ten point two billion dollars in the US. The other side of the coin is that they lost 3.2 billion dollars in the rest the world which is not really what you want to see. Now really quite disappointing and really calls into question whether the whether Ford has the ability to make money on every anything other than large suvs and pickup trucks because right now it seems that they do now. And eight when when you've got low oil prices. And Americans are buying suvs. Great forge you define if oil prices go up are that many people gonna still be buying Ford explores Ford expeditions and so one down the road. I think that's the question for Ford and it's one they're gonna have to answer at some point. Some news out of Amazon. They are trying. Two while roll out a more robust delivery in shipping network. And they're doing this by trying to undercut the companies that they previously used for a lot of deliveries FedEx and UPS which lends further credence to my aid adage. If you ever think about doing business with Amazon understand they will eventually try to take your business. They are. Well as their name implies Amazon they they are like game you know twenty foot long Anaconda they just eat everything in sight. The it was only I think a matter of time before. The you went after UPS and FedEx treated talked about it for awhile you know wire they're trying to do this Holland house well you know because they think they can do it better than UPS and FedEx injured for a cheaper rate they're not gonna ever getting to the heavy shipping that they the very complex logistics that. You know the companies do but. When it comes to you know the last. 10% of the delivery getting it to go home. And is on the sick they are really really trying to undercut does those other guys by as much as 40% in some cases. I'm someone who owns Amazon's stock. I'm someone who hopes Amazon's stock does well. They have antitrust problems that need to be investigated yeah it's it's at that point now simply because. They make so much money on their servers that they can afford to either lose or pretty much pay you know cover their costs nothing else. On their their businesses. And it's great right now if you wore a consumer advocates are like yeah great I can get all the stuff shipped me very cheaply. The problem is. In effectively eating in destroying any business that they do business with. Is that it reduces competition in those businesses in the future. And there's no guarantee that whoever runs Amazon in the future is going to treat customers as fairly as Jeff Bezos is today. Yeah absolutely that's the entire idea of a monopolies regardless of whether or not there. Today a that that's the problem with antitrust law today you have to prove that they are currently harming consumers. And he can't prove that would Amazon they're not they're harming businesses I think the rib but the problem is we don't the potential to harm consumers is a a legal theory that does not exist today in a you cannot charge company with having the potential to harm consumers and the road to trust and it's a real serious issue with him as it is. Good news for truckers Wal-Mart wants to hire 900 truckers this year they heard about 14100 last year. And when you would be average pay of Wal-Mart truckers. It's close to 90000. Dollars a year pretty incredibly the. Median pay forward tractor trailer drivers only 42 for re back in me at seventeen that's come up to 53000. Dollars. But I mean Amazon is there dispute me Wal-Mart is nearly double that at that rate here is pretty incredible. They're all hard. I know what what went as Wal-Mart ever paid more than the going rate for labor well clearly there's a shortage for truckers but why are they paying double. I don't does only does it feel like something doesn't add up here make it attractive. On. But you don't care or else is this that that's median not average. So you know I don't know where they arrest these wages are really coming in. It does seem pretty darn heavy they did it potentially may be just that they have hire more restrictive hiring credentials say. To be a candidate yet that at least thirty months of full time commercial experience and a traffic violations the past three years. That might be a result of your remember what was that three years ago the accident New Jersey that. Yes Wal-Mart driver killed Tracy Morgan he killed trees were his friend in nearly kill trees and a brand. Now those Wal-Mart Turk Turks OK so maybe just a PR men and maybe they do have to pay a premium to get drivers just because of some of the negative PR as well so Wal-Mart were trying to bring on 900. Drivers this year offered signing bonuses up to 15100 bucks. And the average pay is again for Wal-Mart drivers. Is just shy of 90000 that 7500. A year tough job mean to really difficult job here Rafer. Mammary. Data sitting on day it's not an easy job and to put on top of that. Yeah yeah have a pretty good indication that that same job your investing in is not going to exist in juniors. So it's tough to take that jump at me in ninety grand for four. A truck driver for company you know that has pretty decent benefits that's. That's attractive. Well apparently ninety grand isn't enough for an awful lot of people because people start to consider other people rich when they make 90000 dollars but only 44% of poll participants in this survey from you gov. Said that someone making 90000 was rich wears a 100056%. Of people said. That made them search for the six figures is is the break point it's all about that extra zero. Not not not entirely surprising I think. I think what I find interesting I'd be curious to see if they broke his data out geographically. That is the day you talk about anyone in the northeast her. Along the coasts. They're all gonna feel that he had 90000 dollars it's like you go to West Virginia Mississippi parts of the south and parts of the midwest that's fortune. How have you hurt either view ever looked at lake property values in the midwest most pressing our. Totally depressing. I mean it's not aria depressing I guess it's our zone like what I can afford and what how that applies you know in the south Carolina's oral Zelaya. I'll I'll give you an example I have no idea if this is necessarily in like a good neighborhood bad neighborhood or the average neighbor but the house looks very nice okay. It's in Cedar Rapids, Iowa it's it's about six or seven miles from me at the center of Cedar Rapids which is a city of about a 150000 people. It's 2100 square feet it's nice little cape in light blue it's got a nice sealed doors would be ill looks nice here the yards nice kitchen looks good. Go for a 148000. It's going for 99000 dollars again in Cedar Rapids is to that I pulled up here okay. What do you think the property taxes charge year. Bucks. 840. Dollars. You pay 200 dollars a quarter in property tax sales. Two if you ever want to feel like you view just kind of missed the boat. Look at property value in the midwest because it will make you feel awful about deciding to look anywhere else because it's so cheap to live there. A fifty dollar gas card choose the let's do that ninth the listener with the right answer actually know what's left of the third listener with the right answers since the Tribune is based on. Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski turns 35 later this month and he also wears number three I believe. Yes I think he was number. And so if you know the right answer Texas at 63566. The third person with the right answer. Is gonna get a fifty dollar gas card to gas station you choice. You're go what other sport besides football that Stephen just guessed the play competitively. In. College I know the answer to this remember back when he was drafted but what other sport such football Austria the answer on its paper. That is a factor in it and it turned his foot expert his Michael please but no unity. A lost art. A quick thought what other sport besides football at Stephen Gostkowski play in college Texas at 635663. Person with the right answers gonna get a fifty dollar. Gas card. Who is raising the price of there who plus live TV service. By five dollars and 3999. A month to 4499. They're putting their basic plan which does not include live TV though. From 799. Down to 519. I think that's a Smart way of donated who Netflix on the other hand just raise prices across the board this is a way of I don't know kind of bad messaging to consumers that you still wanna have a cheap platform for them but you know raising what you think is the true value. In terms of who whose footprint of this it does anyone who subscribes to who plus I do not. I don't either Tucker I'm curious if you love you know anyone on this and it on this side of things do you know anyone that subscribes to like The Who plus the T the live TV stuff from them there. He does down I'm pretty sure does he use started on how we sound confident Hulu what are the 401. You are Arabia NHL playoffs well not forty bucks anymore. LC if you cancel an hour so I believe I have something on the prediction wall about the cost of streaming service is going up by and you do 30%. Yes Stuart you know fresh -- down there in so I just think that they're not well anyway for the rights if they kept prices where they are so I think that the the value for consumers can get gradually worse on the streaming side of things unless you cut oatmeal lower products audio you know who lose basic sort of so you're official predictions by January 22 when he won. So why you might yearling on this is that. The average price of streaming will go up by 30%. Minds already gone up. By about 25 so I replied PlayStation view was in at 35 bucks a month now to 45. All places that the 45. And up to fifty. Not on line. And is quite get screwed and it's just that the and an unknown number little nervous that maybe there is the price aren't I had as part of us for the it's yet there's three different that is to three different membership levels 4550. And sixty. Yeah at the fifty version actually no I'm sorry I am at the fifth so I've gone from 35 to fifteen. Y and hiking at fifteen dollars. Because they can't make money on our callers are. Walter gonna lose people. I don't know when they raise the price on this one is that is the one that I have is the fifty dollar one singed and think about whether or not they'll lose customers mean the whole draw at least a big part of the draw on these programs that there's no. No contract what's it pretty darn easiest way and I think the other thing is if you add additional TVs. There's no cause Steve. You know if your if you had three TVs on cable contract. Was calling you end up like overall it was a bars heartless stupid swears this OK if it's fifty bucks a month. If I have three TVs are not paying more for those destroyed TV it's you know at all of that too it was so difficult. To stream live sports. When you're somewhere else. A catch here you've got your. Bios membership for instance and you wanna watch NFL 0% NFL game in Rouse a bacon may be watching on your phone. But you're not streaming you're stage it was just so restrictive that we yeah just just a child annual us on Acadia anyone that's on a cable. Subscription right now ID take a good hard look at the streaming services and it's a bit of a technological. Change and that I think that's the tough part for people as you changed the style of the remote a lot of things do change but if you can get there that cost savings and flexibility can be really huge. Even me I I had to TVs in my previous place and I went from paying a total about 160 months. Two originally down around eighty and now up to around a hundred but it still saving sixty bucks month to 700 bucks a year yeah that's big money is you know. With that I can go to all the fun stuff like reflect talker from his home in Iowa to the beach right and back wants. That's is once. So there's that it's by the way you have yet have you ever tried to get to Iowa from the coasts the whole it's not easy. Ought to go around looking into because I have a wedding there this summer. Yeah and there are. Quite honestly no direct flights from just about anywhere on the coast you either have to go Chicago or Chicago or Dallas or Atlanta in order to get there there's there's no direct way to getting an extra hand. And he can't get there from here all roads do not lead to Iowa. Dieter ratings company Nielsen looking to sell itself around ten billion dollars again. They darted on this one they've they've already done this once the what do you make of this that this like. In a world where we get so much on demand data from streaming in the live Internet stuff and so forth. What's the ballot you win Nielsen these days I guess like going forward is is my view yes. There's. No place for their TV ratings business itself now the technology behind it is has been changing it will continue to change. The real issue they have is they have this whole separate business. This by segment business where you advertising and it is different business that is just not really succeeding. And that's the piece that. Is a real drag business. We're gonna take a break but coming up afterwards you won't believe what buzz feed is doing to its workforce. Right after this break. You know that's really important because we see that more and more today you know you've got people who have lost spouses our dealer or like you say it never got merit planning has. Even last minute planning works for them example let's say you have a house and you have some money and you get sick and you go in the nursing home people gonna sail I got to write the check. Maybe not call right because what we would do is we would allow the house to be considered non accountable for users away for us to do that even when you're single and you're not living there so they wouldn't count. They might lead it but they won't count it. And then the money. Depending on your rage we can do one of two things we can either buy a Medicaid annuity for you which would stretch out the money over a long period of time allowing you to pay a Medicaid rate which is about six grand a month vs fifteen grand a month private pay so huge leverage there. Or if you if the Medicaid in order doesn't work out you can do something total pooled trust where you take assets and put it in such a special trust that allows you to get eligible for Medicaid. It may sound complicated but Cushing and dole has written a guide especially for those of you who have put off doing your planning and are now faced with a last minute nursing home situation request this brand new guide from crushing in dole and by dialing. 8668485699. Opera ball is speed to get past the fact that all they did was put out dumb quizzes for teens for like ten years down side I think they're pigeonholed here. Go to your real house dew which have been doing but don't trying it testing subscription models for their real news services and I don't think that that. Is this Smart way to I mean the number one trending article on buzz feed right now is how well the nose Girl Scout Cookies. That's what patience and you know what. I don't wanna read that but there is a big group of people that really dues or does he keep on doing that stay away from the serious news let let the pros and. This is not just bullets beat by the way that's doing this if you can a lot of these new media companies that popped up in the last decade. They also they had a different business model and they could generate traffic and they'd be immune to you know any type of problems. It's it's not the case. The media rules still the same if you don't make money and either advertising or subscriptions. You don't survive and companies are finding it doesn't matter and we could be headlines you may. It doesn't pay the bills. I don't know life. It's at the news business is really western bring this act coming down there doing still well with that garbage that we just talked about for the last ten minutes I had no word joking about it but. Similar story had a Verizon their media group which was formerly known as. 01 of the worst branding names I've ever heard that was the amalgamation of Yahoo! and ale well they're laying off 7% of their staff from that. Yeah not terribly surprised affair and has spoken to a Verizon employee of the last few months you're probably aware that there have been. Offering a big buy out package use I think through December people had the option to take that buyout. And today the general consensus was that. It was probably going to be followed by layoffs they're just giving people an opportunity taken out early. So. Any surprise here I mean Yahoo! and AOL and I think that might be. Well. I know there'd been a lot of acquisitions over the years but that might be one that the worst acquisitions that I can think of the last few years. I mean to it to be fair at least didn't cost them you know too too much money they could cost them all I think that was AOL acquisition I think like three billion Yahoo! was four fives and like that. You know since this. It wasn't like the first time when AOL bought Time Warner in the league right that was like a 110 billion dollar merger like. You know you've had bad ones you've idea of the HP autonomy one where I think they've bought autonomy for twelve and had to write down the entire thing. Yes just kept him an asset that's quite as valueless as well this point. Mean. Let me see I'm pulling up a list of the top 37 worst emanate flops of all time. And I'm gonna see if any and a story to make the top ten. So he's on even flops some not which actually Yahoo! at what Yahoo! and Tumblr anyone remember Tonya the blogging service. Mr. Russell on HP HP and autonomy yup that's up there. HP wrote down nine billion dollars of the eleven point one billion dollar purchase and then sold off the autonomy assets for pennies on the dollar afterwards Google and Motorola. Oh yeah as a bat they bought it for twelve and half and later sold to Lenovo for two point nine yes that was a pretty bad one. Arby's and Wendy's and a member of that. I guess it technically the supreme battle BankAmerica and countrywide. We controllers kind of horse and make Erica forced into that one but yet as bad as bad position this is one that I don't remember but it sounds awful and and it's actually great. Named for merger Microsoft in danger incorporated. So apparently danger. Was trying to build a product called the danger hip top. Which was then reprinted later on as the T-Mobile sidekick. Remember that but then some Microsoft that is bought and afterwards trying to make phones and they just flopped completely yet it's amazing how many Microsoft HP ones make this list when it's all said and done. Sprint Nextel you remember that in new that was remember Nextel they had the you could want to talk to your friends and I had I had one of those did it for my jobs. Here's a bad one News Corp. and MySpace. 580 million dollars Justin Timberlake bought it for 35 million dollars ten years later. So whole bunch of bad emerged as you go down the list. For Valentine's days you the other big ones and there's some other hum. There's inaudible I mean staple. Auction chocolates you know heart sheep walks and over there's something else that says I can remember what else does something else that's like purely Valentine's Day candy thanks in my rock I don't eat candies you know. And I don't really believe in Valentine's Day so it's put me put me kind of a disadvantage I think. Does Eminem's have some sort of Valentine's. Urgently as some I can remember what it is. This is. By Far. East. All the time close it's it's so made up obviously. All of my wife and I don't really know a win. We did the way it works is we were limited to buying something for about fifteen dollars so I normally get her board game that's kind of the tradition that guy and she normally gets me a pair boxers around and that's it and then we. Make dinner at home and that's what we do. Like we. We are not Valentine's Day people my argument being. Look I'll be able to buy you weigh more flowers if I don't do it on the expense most expensive day of the year and spread those purchases out when no one else is buying them. Right if it makes sense it is supply and demand if demand is high you don't buy which is actually great slogan. Later just to point that out. Speaking of demand demand for Super Bowl 53 tickets apparently. Not great while letting because rams fans don't care about their team and pats fans either worn out from go into too many Super Bowls recently. Or just don't have enough money to go anymore because they spent on previous year. It is this article that you arguing that pats fans are so well versed on how to buy Super Bowl tickets now that there wait date they knew the prices for a drop the second prayed. I've got into symbols they're weak and out NC gets the last second which ports they think the and yet that super on sale tickets to your right rams fans. How long they've been out there to his second year yes they don't have a fan base and plus you got to fly six hours it is doable in US in orbit and beyond from from how much lower our ticket prices right now for the simple compared to previous years do we have any information on the I don't know about previous years. That they were you have 500 to a thousand dollars lower this recent years times that's that's a league beat big move. Whoa what they say is you know at the patriots fans is so experience with you know purchasing Super Bowl tickets that they know to wait till the last. Minute to buy their tickets to Obey the bottom price of their very experienced knack pass so I'm curious to be honest if we see some empty seats at this one. Now bill now and I'm curious if he sees an empty suit itself. Knowledge that it's a survival and Iraq don't they tickets low enough if it gets that point I don't think it will. I just I think it exists he rams fans being so apathetic just it is Italy's never been a town that likes football to begin well I agree I agree but I think you're gonna have a lot of fun not a lot but a good amount of you know wealthy LA fans who just wanna fly out just to save it for awhile that's possible. The dream for a few if you're ticket scalpers or ticket resellers and when trying to you know unload Super Bowl tickets that you bought them you would love New Orleans to be in this game goal is it's right down the street from Atlanta you know you get people within five hours driving test and now as best case scenario if the saints interest of normalcy get Atlantic coming. And even Kansas City what was Lester gets an irresistible late Super Bowl for so we're top 49 years ago huge gains that to be honest to me Kansas City. To. Atlanta. Com what is that probably a twelve hour drive or something like that some wanna ballpark yeah. I mean Serbs ticket prices yet twelve hour drive so lake again it's with in driving distance and obviously easily Neil pliable to. Yeah so I think if your reseller. You're probably looking at the same you got the worst match yeah I mean that the best matchup for ticket prices was the chiefs and the saints but. You know via phone cares about the TV ratings which is where it's gonna happen with you know Boston and Alan markets it I'm not sure any of this matters because chicks weighs me closeness of doubles title all that. The which makes you wonder like should they just play the game on a Monday just such a fully could be open yet to issue don't know that chick away there's one at the Atlanta Mercedes-Benz deal. It's never opened but I'll never holds us. Could not just like higher non Christians around and if that's if that's your moral obligation as a few of the nation and restore on Sundays and can you find somebody that doesn't share those beliefs that it. You know open up the story I know I think that belief in generals that everyone should rest on Sunday and not just Christians right. Yet and that's pretty much our motto. Story out of China today wanna skip ahead to this one Microsoft's bing search engine disappeared and was no longer accessible in China. The fact that Microsoft isn't saying what is going on. Probably is an admission that pave the Chinese Government doing something here to which my response is. This is probably in response then to the always situation. It seems like and you know what I wasn't really aware that being with still available in in China shame on Microsoft. In a Google. There's been rumors that Google is working on you know creating one that would adapts to you all of China censorship. A Microsoft has bowed down and said yeah you guys wanna censor our search engine you go ahead wolf will create one that is. Perfectly compliant with your rules and shame on Microsoft for doing so. And in China by the way right now is in the middle of a six month campaign to try to scrub the Internet of what they call. Boulder contents of course there which could be you know just about anything that is. Critical of the Chinese Government.
