This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Stocks are trading up for the fourth day in a row the Dow Jones industrial averages up 150. Points this is largely based. On optimism. As it relates to the negotiations between China and the United States and tree hi everybody it's very truck with you here it is a Wednesday morning. And I think Turk we have to attribute this continued rally too optimistic. Reports or receiving out of China. Yeah I think there's probably some of that involved I think also was still a little bit of after glow from. Friday with Jerome Powell neo appearing significantly more dovish I think than he has in previous. And meetings and and in conferences. And so I think the combination of those two things really helped stocks over the last couple days because they pretty much had Powell come out and say hey. I'm going to largely give stocks the backstop that I wasn't really signaling previously. And with the China negotiations. You know the stick around for an extra day compared to what they were expected to spend at the negotiating table and I think that potentially indicates that they maybe they're making some progress and wanted to hash out a few other things. Prior to wad departing from these negotiations. When you look at the issues that they're exploring you know and yeah lot of it has to do with intellectual property. How do you. Gave it and it seems like this is the stumbling. Block in the negotiations had. This they think if it you know the old Reagan managed trust but verify. How do you do that sort of structural arrangement. Well it's if it's not something that I have any experience doing it too is something that I mean they're people that dedicate their entire lives to building these types of systems. So that you can actually verify you know complex questions like this it's not easy to do I'll tell you that much it's not something where you just say. Okay we're gonna call you once a week to make sure that you're doing what you're supposed to doing that that's not really you know your building in its okay what's the schedule that we're going to build as far as how often we need to actually show up and look at these things what things need to be reviewed what are the consequences Howard the consequences implemented if you don't do something right. You know this is it it it's a fairly complex issue that you have to deal with there. So it it's not as simple as the saying OK guess send us a letter for weeks saying that you're not stealing technology. It's okay what are we going to look at what you know can we come to an agreement on how frequently we look at it and it in all those different force in pieces on the back end them. What do you like in the conversations at least what I'm reading in the journal and other sources. Is Robert light Heiser who's heading the trade talks on behalf of the United States. Is proposing chalk that. There's you know validation. Points and if the failed to validate meaning that let's say they don't let us go in and inspect or we are allowed to look at the books. Then that tariffs. Would be reimposed and they're all they're gonna do is as opposed to eliminating tariffs are talking about suspending them on a temporary basis. I cattle like that because if you look at historically. China for the last twenty years has said well we're gonna do this and yeah we we agree will accommodate you on that issue and and we and will play ball. And then they're just lying through their teeth but they've they've never done anything. That the that they said they were going to do like opening up there their system for banking. Which would be good for their people as well thank. I think to a certain extent they've been unable to open that system up just because I think there are structural issues there that could potentially cause of capital flight out of China if they did. Yeah an and so I think that's it's kind of an existential issue and that they haven't beanie they haven't done it just because I think if they did in certain cases. You'd you would of had some significant financial issues over there so it's. It certainly seems like this incremental progress being made. I think we're still you know ways away from a deal but if it does seem like again based on the fact that you know they stuck around for an extra day. Does seem to be a positive sign their so I think if I think it's at least showing hey there's there's some real negotiating going on here in the two sides are just be a screaming at each other. Getting nothing done. Where you say that it looks like Theres good conversations going on I don't disagree based on what we're seeing from market action but if you look. Beneath the stock market and if you look at the volatility index it is flashing a very loud warning signs were speaking of the ethics. Yeah and pretty much with the Vicks is is it measures the that this is gonna sound way too technical measures that implied. Volatility of the at different options that are out there on market's pretty much what it's saying is hey when people are going and buying and selling stock options on the S&P 500. How much volatility to they think there's going to be what do they pricing in there and the Vicks is saying hey the stock pricing and a lot of volatility. And I think that's prudent thing there's a few data points that have come out in the last couple days that it's. Don't really bode particularly well going forward in. You know we've we've talked about that the impact of you know the trade conflict with China and also be of the uncertainty with regards to exit and things like that. I'm starting to think that more than I look at this that. The cake is somewhat bait as far as were heading for an economic slowdown the only question is how steep that slowdown is going to beat. That there was a data point that we got overnight in this was from Germany and this was on German industrial production. In Germany you know if people are familiar with the German Economy it's highly highly highly highly. Focused on high end industrial manufacturing you know that's that's that's a major component. German industrial production year over year. Declined four point 7% that is the biggest drop that we have seen. In German industrial production since December of 2009. So that's sort outs to get that something out there that you know suggests hated there's something going on here. In this much like I was looking at South Korea back in August last year said hey there's something going on in South Korean exports is weakening coming. This is the kind of thing that you know says hey there's there's real issues in Europe. In Europe's growth is about to hit a wall based on this is Europe's growth is really based on Germany and France more than any thing Els. Well and then you have bricks it to add in airing you have an aging demographic I mean you look at the population you think the United States is old. And suffers from a lot of population growth look at your. Yeah demographics are long term issue and yet something that's going to be a problem next fifteen to twenty years this kind of numbers suggest hated there is a wall that we are going to run into at some point. In the next few months so when I start looking at this kinds of data. It suggests hated there's something that's going to be coming. If you can get in agreement on with with with China on trade and if you can get a breaks agreement. Great you've you've stem the tide but there's still it. Come companies don't give it in one day you know it takes time. And so I think the question is if you get both those agreements I think companies can pivot quickly enough that maybe we don't go into recession. But if one of those two issues isn't resolved either Briggs it or. What we're get what we're seeing between the US and China. I think it based on the data that start to command it starts to look like a recession becomes more and more likely that. That's it's it's hard to imagine that after Friday's jobs it is it is in. This that the big thing is the next few months in jobs reports I'm expecting to be weaker now just because those are you know that. Those are reports that are going to be based on hiring decisions that were made as the market was falling apart December's jobs you were hired in December. That hiring decision to post that job and hire someone was made in October September August. Now that the next few were gonna be really interesting because they're gonna be the first ones that were made in the heat of the slowdown that we saw in the fourth quarter. And I think that the next few of if I am looking at them I'm expecting them to come in weaker than expected. Will say. I don't know the should report on this officially yet but there are rumors circulating that Jeff Bezos is getting a divorce. Bradley I saw that. He each tweet it's open notes that affects. There's a whole flying and his wife who has been trying to decide she's going to be a really wealthy woman. That's gonna say majority is a very wealthy woman Howard didn't merit for. Well 25 years you know long time his wife and intensity. That's hasn't no fault they they live there were missed residents of Washington State. That's a no fault states she gets half even if she's down to vision. You know having an affair something that she still have to go in and he's one of the while these men in the world. Interesting yeah I'm seeing CNBC is reported yet now. That I guess he announced it today is mutual now. Well according to an announcement any public statements always gonna see mute Nestor of yet that's that's tough that's that's too bad Jeff. Bad day. Sears gets another lifeline yesterday you we were reporting Tucker if you recall it looked like at about 11 AM. As if this year's was gonna shutter all their stores they got a lifeline from the judge yesterday not sure what it means struck. Bear to answer this for me to happen struggling over the last year to figure this out. What. Eddie lamp or want to out of this. I don't know that he's poured billions of dollars into this company yeah I I just don't know what he wants like we just totally mismanaged. I just it feels like this there has to be something I'm missing here because I don't see you wait for him to make any money on this company so yes to post a 120 million dollars by today at 4 PM as outages yes. Why would speak to like what I just I I. I feel like what at all is gonna be some side deal or something because I want to just like part of the debt deal that he's trying to do here. Is in this four point four billion dollar deal. Is he's offering to forgive one point three billion dollars of debt that he made to the cult that the that he went to the company. So be part of this is him saying I'm willing to walk away from one point three billion some. I'm thicker in their house to be more money being made some morals but. I just don't get it. What the accusation shocked is that he made a lot of when he used by cook my words carefully here. But be that some of the transactions he had as a relates to the pension funds in the real state would gnaw at arm's length transactions and that's tough problem is. If the bankruptcy protection the creditors are saying hey you screwed us on you know so these real estate deals. And that's why it's going to be such a messy. Bankruptcy mean site I as to whether it survives or not I mean he's planning to. Shut down about another 140 stores and maintain 400 stores that are supposedly. Profitable not bad includes by the way both Sears and Kmart. So where they shakes out I don't know but I do like to be one of the remaining 60000 police. It. It if I'm one of them I don't know how you're not looking for a job right now is that there's jobs out there. And many ups I don't know why you're sticking around at Sears at this point fusion if you're an employee. You know well let's our poll question today will Sears and Kmart still be open in twelve months. I'm going to say a man haven't voted yet who it would use it where you on this story. I mean my gut tells me they're gone but the problem is that like it's the company that won't die. You know it's it's like so. Vote that they'll still be here in twelve months is it feels like there's going to be some kinda hail Mary that gets thrown here and another company sticks around. Writely can vote on our poll question by visiting our website its financial exchange showed dot com. Where he can text us our text number is 63566. According to the Wall Street Journal media mogul Sumner redstone and his family. Have agreed to settle their long. Running legal dispute with his former live in companion. And well a cursor less than a week before one of the cases was scheduled for trial in California. This according to people familiar with the matter while this has been going on the way for users now. I think for years and it is not surprising that they finally settled a priority would go to court just because you know lawyers on both sides to be saying they look. Guys settle like big big lawyers typically don't wanna go to court if they can avoid it. And so this is something that I think it started back in 2015. But it does appear that it's finally. Don't at least as far as this piece is concerned here. And it's it was part of this settlement. Miss hers or is going to be paying back 3.2 five million dollars. In gifts that Sumner redstone had given her he'd given her tens of millions of dollars over. 75 million she he had given her both her and this other woman miss Holland. Were given 75 million dollars each. In and miss Holland had settled. A separate up piece of litigation with the red stones last year. And so we does appear. That this does seem to be finally over which. Rather nicely it's it's it's been just. In ongoing saga for these families here. Piece 95 years old awesome barely speak. Which is good for US produces an S think still. In a reasonable range for rock cost in the United States and it's good to see a little bit of stability there. Their habits of the had concerned me a little bit as we dip down into the low forties over the Christmas week. But with that bounce back here feel much more comfortable in the low fifties. Been in the low forties. Saudi saying they want oil late eighty bucks a barrel. Yeah I mean it won't be surprised if they do it's it part of the reason why it's been so low is just that you've seen as big ramp up in US production and I don't think that's ending soon if we keep prices where they are. If prices dip down into the low forties I think that's Thurston PO spill little bit of production offline just because you don't have as much coming on and now we've seen faster degradation on a lot of these new fracking wells then on conventional wells. Am he's just a matter whether they're willing to give up market share. Pretty evident it is to a certain extent but again like you've seen so much US capacity come online I mean we've gone in the last three years now or rather yes a 161718. We've gone from about eight point six million barrels day to eleven point seven. A big shift there and you talk in a two point one million barrel increase in a three year period that that's a lot of extra oil that's coming out of the ground. Yup it is it is well. At any rate to the oil trading at 5143. Big major indexes all positive territory though. Pulling back a little the Dow's only a 57 points the S&P is up to if you were called truck this is same kind of price action we saw yesterday. Had a big open. Tapered off and then came back strong. Yeah I mean it's see you you're seeing I think a little bit more stability in the short term here just at these levels and you know maybe some consolidation in terms of okay were were kind of getting back into a more narrow trading range after the big dip heading into Christmas so. I think there's probably a little bit short term optimism now. What's going to be really interesting is next week we're really kick off earning season and then we also start to get into the heat of breaks it negotiations. And so I think those are going to be the key drivers in this market. The for the end of January into February. And may be light volatility index is so high up still a little bit spooky music could be out there now. Against the odds. A tiny Waltham Biotech company strives to improve dialysis. Patients lives I don't know if you know anybody who's on dialysis a museum about half a million people. That are on it. And 468000. People are on dialysis in the United States according to the national kidney foundation in this little company out of Waltham. Has. A device that will hopefully make it a little easier for people to get their dialysis treatments. Yep pretty much know what would doctors tried to do was for people who go on dialysis they tried too wide they they go through this operation with patients. In order to really create a stronger Bain in order to move blood in and out of the body but the problem is did that mean it doesn't end up taking in doesn't end up working in about half of the surgeries that they do. And so what the goal is for this company. Is they're trying to figure out. Really bitter ways to deal with the situation either in neo in terms of improving. You know blood flow so you can get it's you know more. It in easier dialysis procedure effectively with less chance of infection in less chance of complications and so. They they've been working on this for a while they haven't had had a ton of success since they initially went public Bakken 2014. But they're still trying to you to get there. At at the at this point but it's unclear. Really if they're going to get to where they want to wad get to eventually simply because. That they they didn't succeed with their main goal in the last trial that they were going through they did you succeed in the secondary goal like yes. But they they they didn't really get there with a primary objective of the struck. Very very well or sick I mean it's is it inching to to watch especially given that it's a New England based company. I saw an article in the New York Times by Andrew Ross Sorkin. And there's this. New concept that's being thrown around it's called the income share agreement. And I think it's brilliant with their describing your truck is a proposal where colleges and universities will say. Yeah you can come to school here and tuition will be free. But we're gonna take 17% of your pay once you graduate need get a decent job. What do you like about this what I like is it allows. Sese yer kid growing up in the inner city. And you're Smart. What you you don't wanna join the military. And you absolutely have no money. To go to college right here here here livid and housing project years your inner city kid but your bracket you do well on on classes and Indian in its college. Well even if you get a lot of financial aid packages your still borrowing. They've those kids are gonna graduate with anywhere from forty to 50000 dollars student loan debt that I've talked about the poor kids inner city. And would disagreement isn't that the universe is being funded by Peter deal and Ashton Kutcher is another investor and it. It's the income share agreement. And they'll only take good candidates. And he'll only take kids that are studying in courses that are actually gonna pay decent wage like coding programming and technical you know the EU you've got to be Smart and you gotta be studying something that's lucrative. And then they'll educate educate you for free and then you pay it back but I think it's 17% UK. As long Jamaican 5060 grand a year and it's limited to two years of payback the fact that's a heck of a deal. So if it's two years in all cases it's it's a decent deal out I have a couple questions about. The first is for someone like me I was a history made. Art history majors usually don't get paid very right you wouldn't be eligible so. Fur for someone like me. This is not necessarily program that would allow me to receive my education if I needed. To you know get money for school I get it Charlotte. Sherwood you were bright kid. And all they would set was he can't study history but Willie come here as long as you studied math computer science or whatever happened in need at that time. And here's where my objection comes in is that Bono. This one when we talk about it weren't we're saying we're not trying this is pretty much saying we don't want to educate students on the what might be you know something that's useful to them and what they want to do this is saying they will educate you but only if it. You study what we deem to be important. Right and so for me that someone of a problem. Because it is it saying OK the college is going to deem what they find to be important based on what salaries are. And I don't think that that's necessarily help people should be picking a job just because. How many people do you know that getting to a job because of a salary get burnt out in two years is actually hated and then leave anyway. But chuck remember we're not talking about U percent were talking about inner city kids who may not get an educational opportunity otherwise. But this isn't solving the problem. You know this I disagree this this agree this is is this a saint to a kid. Rather than joining game come here go to school. We'll educate you and then you can go in code in worked for FaceBook or Amazon on her or one of those companies you make not eager. Will that that's if this program turns out to work. Yeah I'm really lucky it it all sounds great but there's lots of things that sound great to turn out to not work at all so. I've got questions about this in particular. I mean that the big thing that concerns me up in addition to this is so let's say that your college. Okay. And let's say that you've got you know good programs going but all of a sudden the economy hits a rough patch right in all of a sudden a whole bunch of jobs dried up incomes go down. In your not getting paid anymore. What happens then and so for me aides what happens the college would be. It's what steps does the college team to ensure that that doesn't happen so when I look at this what colleges are effectively doing then. Is their turning students in two streams of income and if there's one thing that Wall Street loves to do. It takes streams of income package and together and sell off to someone else so my concern. Is that you could end up effectively being an indentured servant of Goldman Sachs as opposed to. Getting to college degree that you want. Well leave the understand these ISA program struck me the maximum eight years two years Alicea make. So you say you're a really good program that you get out of this program and to make an underground a year. Beat you pay 171000 dollars a year for two years 34000 dollars but you're making a 100000 bucks a year all lights out on suggesting is that. You're going to see. More and more private institutions. Whether it's. What's the general dynamics down in rotten kinetic Newton. They're doing similar programs to this. The eight with the Community Colleges in Rhode Island and in wire they do it worker shortages and that's what I think this story reflects is that. There are worker shortages and there's a lot of the there's a disconnect collect the housing market rate it a lot of people that wanna buy houses they just can't report. It a lot of people that wanna go to school they just can't. It can't forty got a lot of companies that need workers. Qualified workers and in skilled workers in the can't find the seems like it's just that meeting of the minds here. We're companies like general dynamics. FaceBook Amazon they're gonna say. Well look we don't need another history teacher will we need are some math major church of science majors and this is how gonna fund. If you don't have history majors and you typically make the same mistakes people did a hundred years ago I'm not saying that book pump myself up but it. What I'm saying is. If all you have a math majors those are people who were good at the what of what you're trying to do if you don't have people were good at the Y the kind of lose guidance and a lot of companies. He just made us sales pitch for the liberal arts education which I appreciate. Are coming up we're gonna talk about vote. Hulu and they have 25 million subscribers. It's our daily poll question had financial exchange showed Doug John. Vote your conscience there heard just vote go to financial exchange oh god come and test away. All right well we're back and it's time to talk about. Son of a gun. Chucked it got 25 billion subscribers. It's bigger number than I thought they had to be honest and they actually added about eight million subscribers last year and 2018. Their growth rate was near close to 50%. Netflix on the other hand currently has about 58 million subscribers and they've got a big head start. But Netflix probably only adding somewhere in the ballpark for a five or six million subscribers only growing about 10% a year. So who does absent ketchup to do and I think it's still a tough putt for them to be able to get up to Netflix is levels especially with more incoming competition from Disney and other companies that are trying to get into this game. But they've got the bigger platform than a real. Missed will be it's a different product that. Netflix insiders like night when I think of who I think of Nancy people TV replacement. It use it up there so that cost you forty bucks a month for a parent. If thirty I can't remember exactly but it was like thirty or forty but be a big advantage what is the the sports the light sport. Right what they've done a bad job of publicizing that is unusually pretty plugged in on the stuff in I didn't know we had a now. Does Leah if that's I think Hulu could be a package in the competitive angle. It's you know you look at who loans them. Right there paper is enormous debt absolutely. Much bigger than. Yet chuck him actually just looking at the channels offered on the forty dollar plan and Hulu yeah yeah all the espionage channels FS one. Golf channel's on their terms of sports. I think if first makes sense Mike to look back to bid at 2018 and talk about some of the big themes that we saw. That move markets create a couple big dips to 10% dips over the course of the year. What caused the more key factors of and it just have the ability to add more volatility into both the bond and stock market it definitely saw that 2008. Mike what are the big things this had an impact a particular in the second half of the years the trade conflict between the US and China how do you see that continuing. To affect markets as we move deeper in the 2019. Yeah I mean huge huge issue for a second half eighteen really added a lot of volatility in markets then and certainly it's going to spill over 2009 team. When we look ahead here my personal views on it is I think that we probably get something on on the US China trade deal. Before the end of the year present don't think the president trump once you head into a reelection season with a giant economic headwind. And looming over so that's my personal view but it's really tough to tell folks there. If it feels like Christmas Eve was a long time ago. Well it was at least as it relates to the price of stocks that seems to be when we bottomed out and my gosh it's been pretty good rally yet in place Santa Claus rally and now we're in the fourth day in a role of race stock market rally begs the question. Worse stocks cheap buck Christmas Eve hi everybody it's buried truck with you. It's a Wednesday morning good question. Yeah I mean I think we're with where things stand today I think the big things that are moving markets at the moment. I still think that drone Powell's speech on not speech but conference of the I was Janet Yellen and Ben Bernanke on Friday is really important because it represents. Pretty significant departure from what he was saying just couple months ago in terms of the Fed being more accommodative if things turn negative. And then obviously we've got to think. Some positive momentum that is probably coming from China and trade negotiations as far as. If these were negotiations that were expected to while last two days. They stuck around an extra day which you know they didn't have to do. And the thought there's that they that they did that not because they didn't make progress but because they said hey. We're making some good part or something we've got a couple of things hash out here. Lets you take the time while oral together and a little bit further here so I fifty days ago. Yeah or get down there that the sense that I'm starting to get is that this is going to be a deal that smaller than initially. Envisioned but also more likely to get done as a result of being small. It and both sides are able to declare victory. I would imagine you know it's it's a question of just can you get so I don't think the US is gonna get the things they wanna on the big ticket items. I I I just don't think that there's enough there. To to get something done on that front but speak it sure seems like the sides are coming to me out table sailor steal some of the smaller issues on this just to get a deal done. And then move on from there. Time will tell at any rate the Dow is up a 128 points yes and p.'s only up seven. Nasdaq's up 38 and the price of crude oil the dollar per barrel at fifty dollars and 82 cents. Good news here cancer deaths declined 27%. Over the last 25 years this is largely attributed shock to the decline in smoking. Yeah that's that's the biggest thing that you see cancer deaths have declined about one and a half percent a year over the last 25 years in the big reason. Is because of significantly lower smoker rates a particular for men who batting 34%. Total declining cancer mortality. And lung cancer incidence has declined twice as fast among men as compared to the rates among women. And so the one area where you do see some cause for concern. Is that for some reason. For adults under the age of 55 the incidence of colorectal cancer. Has increased by about 2% a year since the mid 91 concern out there is obesity which potentially. Leads to this but. No one's quite sure if that's the only factor if their other ones out there somehow related to diet or other things that are going on. So this is you know kind of one area that is concerning. Largely because obesity. We really hope still have a good handle on in the United States we know what causes that we don't really have a good handle on you know. Provide all people way out of it. Well endometrial. Cancer has increased and around 60% Kate of cases truck are attributed to obesity. Yeah now so I've got a book for those of you who are a tad overweight too. And you wanna lose weight read the book called the fast diet. That's I lose weight you know take a pill after go to class you know to get weighed just read the book one book read the book it's called the fast. The verdicts I don't work like I gave it up. Now you do it one day I know I know I I I got some fighters. I did it for three weeks there's 33 months in Sarasota who won today for three months salary goes out Longoria once a week for three months. And I gave it up because it was getting to the point where I was actually measuring weaker at the gym. As a result and so I said look if biking and bench what I wanna bench you better believe them given that up tonight I gotta I gotta oppressed people engines to make chuck. You weren't obese when you started the whole point is is for people who are overweight rights. The whole fasting program neither one of you guys. You know what I I don't think I've witnessed this and he doesn't own one I understand true on bundled before it was cool. Why don't you have a cold I I do own a winter coat. I don't Wear whatever why do you have a cult just in case. Of what I mostly keep it in my car in case I get stranded somewhere in the winter. So like if I'm with Al Blake access to warmed for an extended period of time but otherwise I don't really believe the pope's life you. Well it it goes back awhile mean ever since I can remember I've always rather I'd rather be cold then warm. Because with the way I look at it. If you cold you can move around and do things do it to warmup punitive there's things you can do you can foggy start fire you can run around you can find he uses things you can do if you're too hot. What options are there for you if you're not near water. Takeoff at home and I'm I'm I'm not about that but a general. Well into an air conditioned room for me hey it's inconvenient always have to put the code on and off I hate driving in coach is I feel better understand I'm just uncomfortable that I debt I don't like the fact that you know he gets dirty and it's another thing to watch potentially so it's just like the whole package for Coates doesn't really add up so so what if you like walking around like Boston something like that it's. Thirty fuel or if it's thirty double we're told by my threshold for putting a Coke on vs taking one off is about fifteen degrees. Boca what about wind factors taken Winchell if if if it's really windy below thirty aware Coke but other than that. I'm a pretty much like that I don't mind being cold I delicately. I guess and just built Ford you know DC. Guys around the city you'd want Karen short pants Tucker today you mean shorts. For jets at this sort science bears know what my entire my entire senior high school I went without wearing pants. And arrested. Apple is reportedly cutting iPhone production by 10% between January and march that's never. Yeah they're scaling back production this also comes on the back of Samsung. A couple days ago. Announcing that they were going to miss their profit expectations. By 18% in C profits 30% below a year ago. So what we initially thought might just be an apple related problem specifically. In China. Now appears to be something that's more related you know to a broader slowdown. In the tech sector is a hole so there's definitely something that's going on here apple responding by cutting production here. They're also putting out a whole bunch of additional incentives try to get people into the stores and buy new phones. So there's there's a shift in the the tech sectors as far as consumer behavior for one reason or another right now. It's not great for a lot of these companies that have relied on Smartphones and tablets for a lot of their profits recently. But they've got to do something vis their act. I think part of the problem truck is there hasn't been any major innovation with the product series say all I have to go get a new phone I mean. I was I was thinking about getting into focus minus two years old that was used that that was my habit. Every two years I would get involved I didn't do it this year because I went and looked at the thirteen hundred dollar phone that I wanted and didn't have enough stuff on it. To induce me about I just bought a new battery for my hopeful. The one thing that might get people there once it's finally widely available. Is the prevalence of five G wireless technology. But it hasn't been ruled out to enough places yet for to make a difference so we're still probably. I would say twelve to eighteen months away from having you know networks that are capable consistently staying on five G not going over to bail earlier generation networks so. It might be until 20/20. You know that you see a key feature is the big thing was five G. Is five Jeep promises. High speed you know locked in landline speeds you know we're we're talking you know 1005200. Megabit per second. It promises those speeds have been on a wireless connections so. If you get that in especially with how much video people watch it's okay this is a game changer for me to create a phone. But you know a new camera but it's it's nice but now I'm not paying a thousand bucks for nuke if a if I wanna spend a thousand bucks on new camera. I go by you know full digital the DSL are something like that in actually get a really good camera for a thousand balk. It's but actually tuck Tucker got a good deal on a new phone talker tell us what you did you treated in the up and old world. Indies and it was like such a good deal if if it made a lot of sense economically ally 12 check out the iPhone in ten are witches the cheaper version of the ten at us it's basically the differences that non OLED screen. Whenever I don't care about that so I went there. I had a iPhone six asks. And the trade in value on that was a hundred dollars but they say hey wait a minute if you trade in the foam will give you another hundred dollars. Torture trade and so a four year old phony traded and got to hunt got 200 dollars back. Now was that at an Apple Store is that your your career horizons into Syria from my understand you can only do this at an Apple Store which is worth one. It that bad. There's daylight to what. That that's what they're trying to do that Apple's trying to do to induce you put the they don't seem to be pushing that out very regular reason I knew about it talkers you happen to mention two mile per copy. Yeah exactly I mean so I essentially got a brand new. IPhone ten are for 550. Bucks or whatever one's pretty good deal. Which date chuck what do you think in terms of the apple ecosystem like I would be petrified to switch. To an android phone just because I've been brought up on the Iowa yes the Apple's system it is that still. Hold true I mean there are people resistant to go from apple to iron Wesson and had a few with what is in the he used to be where a lot of people leave injury go to Apple's that's the case. Well so what's what's your hang up I guess in terms of switching what what worries you most if you were to switch fear of the unknown. So there's no one thing in particular it's not know more about my photos and how many get them it's it's just in general. Yes they are you know it has double her and I I don't adapt well to change. So the big thing is that you're you're not seen a ton of turnover. From either apple or android two the other army needs it still is most people who get locked into one they pick ten to stick with one that's that's what you see. Just because there's there's a lot of momentum you know objects it rests tend to stay at rest. Both companies both apple as well as Google. Have made it a lot easier in recent years to switch there and there are. All kinds of additional platforms that they have for transferring things like photos and music and all these different pieces that they've made it easier to switch but. For most folks you know they sit there and they say they think about how most folks use their phone. You know that the average person he's their phony thing about what they use it for. They go on FaceBook they go on Twitter they go on snap Chad maybe they go on a couple banking apps maybe to use their calendar maybe they use and text messages. Is there really a huge reason to switch and a lot of cases. In I think that's the big thing is pay if there were a a great reason to switch it. If Google had a killer app that you couldn't get anywhere else if apple had something great you couldn't get anywhere else. Switched but there largely similar at this point you know and and and that I think is the biggest reason why most people don't switches for how to use their phones. The something different. But Beckett actually hurt apple because wasn't that what kind of there. Claims to fame was it you know people didn't want to leave their ecosystem because it was so. You know difficult to adapt to the entry I used to have what do my producers went from apple they Andretti lasted about a week. I remember no one knife one a reference to daddy gotta regrets that. The outgoing from apple Mandarin. So I don't know the I don't know the answer I liked to use it I think there's still a lot of pent up. Resistance to to making that switch but I agree the last 200. When we come back we do a couple things in terms housekeeper and have the answer in the winter tour trivia question. We're also gonna talk about the number one job to have in America if you wanna have a six figure income and low stress. Call right because what we would do is we would allow the house to be considered non accountable for users away for us to do that even when you're single and you're not living there so they wouldn't count them. They might lean it but they won't count it. And then the money. Depending on your rage we can do one of two things we can either buy a Medicaid annuity for you which would stretch out the money over a long period of time allowing you to pay a Medicaid rate which is about six grand a month purses fifteen grand a month private pay so huge leverage there. In the best paying jobs in America chalk that does not. Involve a lot of stress I guess as being an orthodontist a surprise. Yeah I mean I could see they can get a little down in the mouth maybe when neared you don't but. Just had to go there but yes so if you look at the the top jobs for salaries okay the highest. Paying job in America. Is being an anesthesiologist. The problem is appear an anesthesiologist you're responsible not for putting someone to sleep but the more important part is making sure that they wake up the way there's posted so can be a suit alive they get sued a lot it's a high stress job the hours can be you know pretty demanding as well. In addition you're next highest paying jobs general surgeons oral surgeons OB GY ands and then finally get orthodontist fifth so. In general this is my personal view. Making teeth straight is lower stress then helping someone give perks. That's how I tend to look at there may be disagreement there tonight they generally think that's the case. That's a pretty good analogy like that in so orthodontist get paid an average of about 229000. Dollars a year so it's a big chunk of change there. But they're typically not dealing with medical emergencies their hours are usually able to be you know set in pretty consistent. Obviously you know it's it's still is a job. Where there's a high level of training that's required in order to do would at high levels so you know you you're talking about yet to be very precise there's a whole bunch technology involved today that you need to learn as well. But it's a relatively low stress job compared to the other ones in that pay a range I'd much rather be an orthodontist then you know BG YN. You know. Tesla model three was the best selling luxury car of 2018. They sold 200 in 45000 cars. Yet 245000. Total vehicles sold for the year including a 145846. Model threes. Their pre order list was north of 400000. Vehicles so. They should still have probably you know at least another year of runway as far as you know probably do maybe 250000. Vehicles this year I would imagine. And they should at least get through that pre order list so do not having trouble selling them right now I do have questions as to whether or not. There's still is going to be that kind of demand afterwards if they're gonna have you know 200000 people want to buy these cars ranked just because sedans are for coming. Less popular you know we've seen a number of car companies dropping them altogether. And the other thing is. For better or for worse with gas prices in the low to mid twos electric vehicles don't quite have the you know the attraction that I think they they did when gas was 350 or four gallon. Have we heard of any major. Problems with the car they mean gave the you know the they have instances with previous models where there are breaking down her. Surface related issues I haven't heard it nodes there's going to threes there's been some. Little stuff in terms of kind of the overall what they call fit in finished in the industry meaning. You know some some little thing not little things even give an example there have been a couple of reports of Bob bumpers fallen off. You know for no reason. On that there's been you know reports that after you know some of the door panels don't necessarily closed the exact same way after being used for a little bit so. Some of the the quality might not quite be there. But they're not having the big kinds of issues like fitted with a model X where you know that was the one that has the the door of the falcon wing doors. And they had problems with those where you know the doors would get stock open and stuff like that they had problems with the chairs where the chairs are supposed to swivel and they didn't swivel and move but. This is a much simpler vehicle and so the not running into those issues on this one. Up it's. You know I think he gives this company know the year two. That relief. Tenet tells you which way it's going I did see that Larry Ellison who he was just appointed to the board right didn't must put him on the port. Yep good friend of you on mosques and it turns out also a billion dollar stakeholder in Tesla. It turns out that he owns a significant stake in the company here. And. At a guy you want on abort they'll right that if you're stockholder Tesla. You're saying yourself well the students got a billion dollars worth of stock you know he's like you know Ellison's going to be in the same quarter as the rest of the stockholders. Yes. And you know this is you know I don't think entirely unexpected just because there's been a good friend to be lawns for a number of years. But billion dollars still you know billion dollars he didn't have to invest that money by any means. On so it certainly shows that a he believes. You know what you on most of selling and he is you know against some is put his money where his mouth lose. Absolutely. Folks as we age long term care something to make sure you plan for. Another headline in the Wall Street Journal China's GMO ruling hands US farmers a new tool in battle against weeds. Approval is given to doubt DuPont soybean. That is genetically modified. To survive powerful herbicide combinations. Is this related to the trade negotiations that Vickers a separate. It's tough to view it is completely is like anything between these two countries it's tough to view was completely separate right now. So it's probably somehow tied in here. I don't think it's necessarily a huge deal just because we outs one company's product when it's all said and dawn. Yet the of the April weird doesn't necessarily make me feel good that you know great now I can meet soybeans that have been sprayed by something that kills everything else around them. Well the Chinese can eat the same bed through debris which is great like it's a level playing field so maybe I guess this is what we're looking for. So I guess it's this soybean produced by Dow DuPont called in list. And in this has been near they've been looking for approval for the since 2014 when it was approved in the US. But it's yep pretty much this is. Going to allow farmers to spray a whole bunch of herbicide to kill weeds around soybeans that won't actually kill the soybean plants so. Hopefully it doesn't make its way into the food. You don't read about many Americans moving to China to get out of the United States use duke Reid. About a lot of Chinese people moving to the United States. And in fact Chinese people have been the top foreign buyers in both units and dollar volume of residential housing here in the United States. First six years straight this according to the National Association of Realtors. And now they're expanding to new lower price tiers so. You used to be I think Canadians had been the largest group for a long time. And then if you're in Florida you would hear a lot of European voices now the Chinese are dominating the sixers general. And in particular California historically has been the biggest area where Chinese buyers have been buying. But you're seeing more more. Chinese buyers now moving into areas in Texas Georgia and Florida. In that's pushing lower price points so what you're seeing now is that the median price of homes sold to a Chinese buyer. Dropped from 530000. Dollars and 2017. Down to 439. And 2018 according. To a number of different realtors. This is good news for those of us who own homes right. But it's bad news for those of you who are trying to buy a house because you've got competition for competition that purchasing your trying to make. Yet in in. The of people ask you know what's the reason for this it's twofold one you do have a number of people from China that say look I don't want to live in China anymore and so they moved simply we have actually moved their family. But that assemble oftentimes it's also something where you see. The investment options available to many Chinese families are pretty limited when it comes to what they can buy and sell in China and in particular. It can be really difficult to get money out of China in some cases. NC US real estate becomes away. That give Chinese Chinese investors can say look I want to get this money out of China what am I going to own. In a lot of times they end up buying up US real state to own something that's not in China. Just to get capital out of the country. But to get buy stocks as well could they could I think it's it's partly just because when we look at how Chinese investing cultures developed over the last fifty years. Most Chinese households haven't been able to buy stocks on the Chinese market over that time period. They're comfortable with real state they've been allowed to buy and they understand it I think at a different level than than stocks in that I think is is part of kind of what goes into this too. Is there's a comfort based on hate this is what I was able to buy in China previously. Right you can also buy it in the US. Is Verizon shares were up almost 3% yesterday when we come back we'll tell you why Verizon rallied in trading. And include. Tech Steward Barry's 263566. And let us know what you think about the stories we disguise. Your team to the financial exchange radio network. Investors is. Bought shares in Verizon because of a robust dividend dividend aren't stockings. Four point 3%. Payless had a pretty good quarter in terms of adding new subscribers. They did and so what you saw here was they added 650000. New phone connections. During the periods increased from about 300000 during the third quarter. And obviously you know one of the big things that we've seen Ian. The the wireless industry over the last couple years is you know. I wrote my whole bunch more competition because of BO upstarts like sprint and T mould really mean a change in the game as far as pricing goes. But Verizon here you know historically the big reason to own Verizon has always been they've had what's called the lowest churn rate in the business meaning. Once customers go to them. They tend to leave at the lowest rate out there. So you've always kind of bought for that stability not this kind of growth fact they were able to add neo and and net growth of 650000. New subscribers for the quarter. That bodes well just because historically once people go there they tend not to leave so. It's I'm trying to loser out front I'm trying to figure out where they gained because it's not population growth. Right in the populations flat so that means it's if Verizon and it's 650000. Mean somebody else lost. Or what what you're seeing from. One of the the analysts here. Was that it also could be growth in two older and younger markets so more people above the age 65 picking up new data plans that didn't have been previously. As well as may be more people buying phones for. Children young ones. If not happening it's. Well but they did that today kids in eleven years whether they're having some it's just you know how are they buying phones were in larger numbers. It. Names that were thought great we're still having three million kids a year. It's I know it's not a lot but apparently not enough. I know you want more McCabe Tucker should give Tucker had one that you keep you happy Furl. Where he got out of phones so he's also. Figure out. Right Wal-Mart getting greed they really ramping up here desire to get in the growth for delivery business league they are. That gave the thing I took away from this story is that they are going to add some like 800 stores next year yet 800 stores in 2019. Yeah and in what they're testing out here is a way not just to get into grocery delivery. But figure out ways to drive the cost down there so they're testing aid driver lists delivery program you with a company called you delve. Yeah Ian surprise Arizona probably because hates you know relatively flat place with a grid based Neal architectures bars. The infrastructure goes. Today very flat and the roads are wide and there's a large senior community. There are dead you know many of them are not comfortable driving around it is so could work out well. Yes so that they're going to be testing this out and you know it's it's not something that I anticipate being ruled out any large scale this year or next year. But it's something where I think they're laying the ground work for somewhere in the next two to three years. Being able to say OK now we can you know start to roll this out with maybe a five year plan towards full adoption and I think that's I think when we talk let businesses roll these things out via I think we're probably talking 2425. As far as 20/20 425. As the years where it's probably realistic on that front I think you'll see you know. Fleets of more drive those cars in the next one to two years to be honest just with. I think what Google's doing through Wayne Moe I think is poised to expand pretty rapidly in the next twelve to eighteen months. But I think that as far as businesses kinda getting on board and in offering similar things. I think it's going to be a few years after that just because there's cost and risk. The the very advantage that I think some of these companies whether you're talking about. Crow over war Shaw's world Wal-Mart. Is once you get used to buying certain items injury physically in the store right in program your phone for those purchases. And it may not be that difficult yet possess the big issue right that was kind of oranges do you buy pineapples. What kind of broccoli to buy organic you know all that kind of stuff. If that's all being recorded in your fall through a scanning device then you might actually be able to shop. Using the you know that delivery service. A little more easily in New York today like right now people who shop lately I've tried the whole foods I've tried in stick card I've tried. And I've never been happy with what. Comes in terms of selection for for weather seafood or fresh vegetables and never like to attack would receive. Yeah that that's still as the big question in and part of that is just because look grocery stores they always receive varying levels of quality in the produce on giving example. Last weekend I was going out and I had to buy some what is a stay away from Romaine now because I am never going back to campaign. And so. I went out and I was looking around for some lettuce and for whatever reason maybe it's the winter maybe it's just you know bad delivery. Every kind of lettuce that I saw in the grocery store last weekend. Looked awful. If I'd been ordering on line it's not the grocery store was just giving me the worst package. Here's what's bad they just had all bad lettuce for whatever reason I wouldn't have known that if I had ordered online so instead activity and that's an okay I'm not gonna get lettuce here. I need to do something else but if I'm bordering on line. The grocery stores knocking opposes notice on line saying bad lettuce this week. You know like it's just in their pocket to do that. I'm not sure what's going on here folks that we will be reporting on it during the moral show price of crude oil. Is up four point 7% today 52 dollars and thirteen cents that's a big move for commodities like crude to move four point 7%. The nasdaq's up 63 points the Dow is up 172. Points and the S&P 500 is up fifteen points it could be four days general. That's we've had three up days in a row this could be the fourth day in a row where we get positive news on Wall Street. Stay warm everybody we will see you tomorrow right here. On the financial exchange.
