This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're simply your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The markets have been open for 35 minutes and stocks are rallying. There are still three things that make me nervous won his trade specifically as early strong relationship with China secondly I'm concerned about bricks it. And third I'm a little bit concerned about the says they'll I think they'll probably do the right thing when it goes all down to brass tax hi everybody it's variant. Christine Dunn with few years to Tuesday morning in. It's kind of in a bad position are the. The the game that big they want to raise rates tomorrow but boy the the political pressure they're getting is something we've never seen before. Well I mean the Fed Chairman has said previously and that's he's not an Allen politics interfere with that decision but. That can't trump was on Twitter and yesterday it was and he could hit it is John it is several times in the right right right but you know. The Fed is right now is as the Wall Street Journal read this morning easing communication talents trying to figure out. How it's gonna communique eats moving forward after this week's meeting and because it's looking at the economic data and saying. Things are looking quite as certain as we thought earlier this year. No it there RT you're seeing a slowdown in housing bill we got some good data this morning. You're seeing truck orders slowed down you sing car sales slowed down so there arson indicators that. Things are slowing at Hague the big question Christine is you know is there any indication that we're going to entry into recession. And I find that hard fine if that forecast hey you know and when I look. They say okay we're gonna go from 3% to minus GDP growth for two quarters in a row way I I don't see 18 now. And doesn't mean it can't happen in 20/20 you're 20/20 one. When I look at 2019. I don't see. Obvious signs of recession but they would could cause a recession. If our trade dispute with China worsens if Bre X it becomes a mask. Then that that those two issues I think could cause you go into a global recession. Well and while we got some positive data on US home construction in November it was led by apartments. It wasn't led by a single family homes rates you now on you you have to kind of wonder you know where the underlying strengths and weaknesses and that data are. The other thing is that the the data they came on November was distorted by other weird weather we've had rain so in the south you have certainly building going on there hurricanes that hourglass with the fires. You know you're having issues out there with being able to build just because the fact wildfires in stopped every that a silly them so I think that the deed out on housing is a little bit unclear and in prior to that report coming out you know it seemed like there is slowdown in housing manufacturing has been concern. Seats you know you do have some questionable fundamentals there that the feds manipulative. When the Fed looks at housing and mean that the housing can represent 1011% of our economy so it's hard to have a strong economy. If your housing sectors falling apart in it would. Is amazing to many of us is that housing would be slowing down in light of rising interest rates but most of us remember interest rates tech I remember. By and homes with the mortgages that were in the 910 and 11% range. So for me to hear people complaining about 5% mortgages that point that he you know it if you people have short memories. On the positive side you know retail sales seem to be holding up so far this holiday season so you know that's a good sign for. Consumer confidence which of course is always very important in hiring scene system is strong guess now so you know. Companies seem to be preparing. Yeah worker shortage easy you don't often go into a recession. When you're talking about worker shortages to play in that's the the the end and wage growth has been strong you know you've got we'd. They got seem that way to you but you know when you looked at wages growing at 33 and a half percent plants we don't want times as we've seen. In Indiana only has the upper hand. You think we're gonna have via the Santa rally those last few days of December that's a good question. Right now that signal you know right now the the the tea leaves still look. Very positive there's no additional positive sentiment it's all or talking about live nurse look at our open today everything's negative. There everything's over rated this referring to that. So there's not. A real cause for optimism as a relief to investing so. If ID guess as I sit here what December 18. I'd say no now remember at Santa Claus rally actually starts after San arrives it right after Christmas. It's. Five days of trading after Christmas in the first two days of trading of the new year. And that kind of set yup for the next year if you have that if you don't get that rally. He can be tough trading. The Fed statement Tamara settling going to be an important call ever figured attracted to that rate and the you know that's I I brass about like I can't imagine. That they're gonna do the wrong thing. I think they come out and if I were if if from side jade palace say what we're going to be data dependent. Going forward that's alias to say you know if the data is really strong we're gonna raise rates. If the data weekends were not gonna raise rates right and I I think there's enough data weakening signs that people say. Well that means we're not in any rate hikes so maybe stocks turn on that little it who deals. I'll tell you one thing that's changing as it relates to our economy easily people. Are watching television advertising and television is declining. And it could get a lot worse and that's really based on the Egypt people you know the younger people. Just don't watch live TV. Yeah I was struck some of the numbers that came out from Nielsen recently so in the each cube at eighteen to 49 we're definitely seeing a steady decline over the last two years of that percentage of people are watching cable TV. But the bigger number is the fact that the number of people who are streaming both TV and videos now. On was up significantly. And between those two things. They are up more with videos and ultimate TV show us of people aren't definitely leaning towers it's this the pure video and not necessary watching even the traditional TV shows and streaming to. Let the end if they do there waiting until they come out they can binge watch the whole series right and got me there or not. The the thing that causes people to watch live TV I think in what I kept myself doing is at fob watch and football game that's why there for watching a hockey game that's life. In a pub watching news you know lose in the mornings. I've got news channels on psyche kind of garner what's going on around the globe. Has released a fine so watching news and I guess I end up watching commercials and but hack at night if we're just relaxing around the house and auction like TV. Right just watching you know what every year we're whatever genre you're feeling ninety think he used roku or Netflix or any of those serves we do we do we we've we have Netflix and I find myself watching more Amazon prime. Then anything else they like that better than even Netflix and yet they've definitely come out with with a really nice selection of things and and all of these streaming services now are taking a look at this thing going OK so how do we incorporate ad revenue in our models more yes given the facts that traditional TV is definitely seeing a decline this is there opportunity isn't he captures and that ad revenue and all the advertisers are saying. Are we got to rethink our models to. How does it imagine that if you turn on Netflix and there's you start seeing ads for McDonald's and -- I just say it's a real turn. I mean now that we've got quite get it right in the right exactly I did notice that allowed yes allowed TV stations now have streaming. Apps rate that they do and and they've been incorporating a line of ads on there apps now and I find it so distracting that I don't use naps as much name off yeah that's right. Do you have a streaming service that is our poll question today can participate in the poll by visiting our website financial exchange showed dot com it does seem to be. More generational though a type of my parents had streaming services I don't know how much life TV actually watch I think they're kind of in the same boat I am they watch live news. And they want to live sports. Tucker your generation. Eighties need unity ports like news or do you news online now for the most part we get all of our news. Via online sources. Com. Net and just the way you are brought up and you know it's come to think about a Melanie my friends or actually cable subscribers. Yeah they it in people are cutting the cord. Rapidly with with any news cable companies or direct television or dish then all by my parents and Myanmar's bull that cable. Not for long suspect me do a talk about getting rid of it. My parents have the Mayan was not so much does my followers just needs to see every team imaginable yet so. You know Larry Kantor to table as a sports put my parents are thought about it yeah. We have a treat for you in the next segment will be joined by doctor William over our holt. He is a senior research fellow with Harvard university's Kennedy school of government and he's an expert on US China relations now. I think the US China relationship is. Probably. And we're talking about this account today it's called the Zuma rewards account and the thing that really caught my eye on this account is. It's a savings account but sort of a god you guys are providing two point 05%. EPY. On that account how do you do. Yet it's one of our most popular. Retail banking products vary so. It's it checking and savings campaign Oka and if you qualify. You get some great reward so for example you 2.0 5%. Equalize your savings account up 200000 dollars 100000. You get 1% cash back and all of beard he's suspending your debit card that's good. And yet each here reimbursements if you use in other things you know and so do qualify I'm traveling in a Matta town there's not a leader bank branch nearby. I can use that ATM card in them and be reimbursed the three dollars to order exactly. That instill the benefit of that is that really expands average network yeah he's in need Yamon. It doesn't have to be leader main core. If you qualify it's pretty simple unions to have your direct deposit and the bank at least 12100 a month for you need to use. You use you count at least ten transactions a month incentive for east Dayton itself. It's it's something that customers would do anyways using right now right yeah it's great benefits. In my opinion much of the stock market volatility. That we're experiencing is related to trade specifically are trading relationship with China. To that end we have recruited an expert on the topic. His name is doctor William over whole teases senior research fellow with Harvard university's Kennedy school of government. His most recent book is China's crisis of success. And what is it six books he's written 88 books excuse me. Your background is really in AG started studying in Vietnam. Working. In that area you started to raise your family. In in China sea you have a a very long perspective. On what's going on in China. Yeah eighteen years in Hong Kong and. And. Well. A lot of research showing China's news when I wasn't. You know he's there paid their economy is growing gangbusters I mean you were there when you had years where the economy was growing 1015%. Per year I think their growth rate has slowed down to about six or 7% now six and a half. And and it's gonna get good deals slower so. How has it changed from say the 1980s. Which is when they were opening up and wanted to grow their economy. To where we are today with what's it would have you seen for evolutionary changes than that Packard time. Well they they start off. With a rather simple economy and and by doing some basic things. Getting market prices. Opening themselves to foreign trade and investment. They get gangbusters grows. And then. Over time things get more complicated. You start off with basically the farmers and road builders and few cheap sucks manufactures. And the government and manage. That. Very competently and then and now leave. All different kinds of energy him. Difference between. Energy producers and energy to strangers engine hundreds of kinds of software. It's gotten so complicated. That they need to. Completely transform the way things are organized during your time anywhere you've studied China. Have they given up to be seen them relinquish Monica comes out of control to the it to people that live there the citizens. Yes. As started with them on the firmer started taking Beck their firms threw in these big industrials fell communes. And actually took ownership of arms yeah. And doesn't show paying agreed. Agreed reformer. Look at the sin but. There were two things about one was. These communes were the principal control mechanism in the Communist Party. Over people they could control every aspect of somebody's life in the commune. Now on the other hand. People or making money in the economy is growing when they when they got control of their own stuff. And he has. The booty. Decency and foresight to say. OK let this happen. To him I had to look like at tremendous risk did a but it did. And when we look back looks like his economic decision. But it was really gutsy and and then they do it's the same thing in. Urban industry when messes back in the 1980s. Yes so the gay relaxed in the 1980s but it seems now. As if they are becoming very repressive of their people for it if the guy you're religious group. A year you're being suppressed if fear. A women's organization your you might be suppressed that you people disappearing in the middle of the night like many of the stories we hear coming out of China remind me. Of 1940 Berlin Mary EU like it. It don't do you see similarities between. That era and and what we're seeing out of China today. Yes and now compared with that in 1970s. In China. People still have freedoms that they didn't have and then. Then they couldn't choose their own marriage partners. They couldn't to choose their orange they couldn't choose where to live from from everybody had the same clothes and basically the same Erica. But compared with the precision ping isn't it time. There's there really cracking down on. On what you can say. On what foreigners can invest. In. And the religious crackdown news. Is particularly harsh what are the primary religions in China. They're any better accepted to the by the government or the anti Clinton. That there are accepted religions and that are. There is an official Catholic church and in the and there are. Our official blue loosen officials Muslims. And there's bureaucracy. In charge of the official religions that but anything else it. The official Peter Parker ties system because we read about or he's Muslim prison camps and you know if you're. An orthodox Jew I don't imagine you're you're spending much time in China. No there hasn't been much of a crackdown on on Jews Susan fairly small number. But the Muslims were told. Here to fast from Ramadan now. And that's very self defeating for her. True the government does it it just creates push. And they've taken the staples of about 12100. Christian church the crosses about 12100 Christian churches. What's the logic behind that way would they do that. Decision opinions you steered. And any kind of of organization. That's not. Controlled and every detail by the Communist Party so believe in that. Isn't that going to depress the the populist though is it like I if if you're if you can't practice your religion if you if you're starting to. Lose your freedoms are you disabled to you why money when my Boston my button going to work at that car manufacturing plant to where they meet TVs or you know whatever. He it would take it would be disheartening. Well people are still enthusiastic about their work. Well like making money. But you're professionals year the year academics. You're journalists year lawyers. Our. And religious people and are are. More and more aliens but what happens if you're an academic and you get in front 300 person classroom. Or you write a paper that is critical of the Chinese Government what happens today. Depends on how seriously they think the offenses. Might just going to. You have to follow the the established curriculum and professors now our. Are forced to. To provide very very detailed. Curricula. What they're gonna talk about it is it true that people are literally disappearing in the middle of the night. Thank you neighbors are being hauled off and eat nobody knows what happens to them. It's. It's true. Some people of the corruption investigations. Would you. Scenario over a million people. 150000. Relatively senior officials and tendered the very Russian sudden now. Is it's it just seems that the it would be disheartening news in the next segment we're gonna talk about China's growth plans they're 20/20 five mission and are they gonna steam roll the United States I hope the answer to that is no I can't see it happening but. We've got an expert on the topic is name is doctor William over holt from Harvard and we'll continue this conversation just few minutes. Life goes on FaceBook and followers on Twitter. We're talking with doctor or whole from Harvard and he's written. Your most recent book is China's crisis of success I did see available on Amazon so that's for news and can pick that up. The and I'd like to talk though. A bow out. What I perceive in in what is most obvious and where we've many of us have had personal experiences. Is that local Massachusetts company called American semiconductor that was. Basically put out of business almost put out of business by a Chinese espionage. The Chinese seem to think that it's OK. To steal our intellectual property. And not compensate us for. You may have you must've seen several examples where business owners. Have been mistreated or stolen from in your experiences how we deal with that issue they think that. Seems to me from my perspective that's the bigger issue than the trade and now it's. The other. The intellectual property theft and the force transfer of intellectual property which occurs when. They say you can only do business in China if you joint venture with a Chinese company in them. The Chinese company gets access to earlier technology. These these are the the big issues and we have to have a confrontation over this. Obama. I had a very serious conversation with China's leaders legion ping and she'd been paying promised to curtail it and ended did decline drastically for awhile. But now it's come back and it's still this. Is it just part of their culture like that that's the part I don't understand I mean it would be. I I liken it to somebody walking into your house eastern neighbor walking in your house and taking the food at your fridge mean it just it it's just outright theft. But it just seems and I'm told by other people that studied the Chinese. It that it's part of their culture and that if you have something that they want their allotted just ticket. No I disagree with it's not a cultural thing it's a developmental thing you all current. Trees who lectures in early stages of development. Do business. If you go to and not go away in Japan there's a Toyota museum. And the first Toyota. Is there and a 50%. Perfect copies of Ford parts 50%. Perfect copies those Chevrolet pars. And and and perfect DeSoto style. Yeah and so Japan did the same thing Japan and it India doesn't. South Korean tile on. That it. And at some point they tend to get enough. Of their own intellectual property and that they. They start to agree oh this confessed to be protected. And China's actually evolving fairly credibly there. But there's still hear the stories bill of you know apple stores in China very you know I know you're familiar with the American semiconductor you've got Chinese soldiers and American universities downloading their libraries and and the EU just it the story after story or it. And those stories are true. And the problem is China is is just sold it and the consequences are so huge compared to put self created great. Are compared with what India is capable of doing today movement the mentality is the same now. And we have it. We have to confront them there they're too big there too sophisticated. To keep doing news. So this is how do you confront them lately what's your best method of dealing with that. You. You. Take their companies. Very can be identified. To court you view. Put barriers to better their companies in similar kinds of business. I agree but the we win we get a judgment and then they take are the same company each court in China and they get in judgment in the equal amount. Says it is the it just seems like peers. The decade many businesses have very many American companies I think are getting very nervous about doing business in China like if I'm general but if I'm Mary Barra. And I've got a big stake in China from Volkswagen I've got this big stake in China. As CEO I've got to be pretty nervous about that that they what's gonna happen too much emphasis. Absolutely. And and theft is on a scale. But that certainly rivals any other total theft and world history you know. But it can be negotiated we can hammer them. Oh we do these tariffs work is that skate because they. We keep hearing that there economy's suffering this year. Are they happy beat these these terrorists that have been imposed thus far in the threat of further tariffs is that an effective negotiating ploy. Well the terra serve blunt instrument. They they do a lot of damage to China and they do a lot of damage to sure. We have to take strong action. The terrorists are one tool. Keeping their high tech businesses. Out. There's another tool and hallway is about to take over there in the world five achieved. If they get there sooner CEO back or CFO backer. Whether or not well why always done. Yeah anything bad in. We weren't allowed to operate and scale. And that kind of business in China right so why should blow a real amounted to tick over five G four in the whole western world right. Putting in penalties. On a scale. That's sufficient to stop but it is something we absolutely have to do. Our problem is who we need to focus. On that kind of problem which is real and and make a big fuss about the trade deficit and yet our trade deficit is determined by our domestic economy it has nothing to do is China. I'm I'm joined today by professor. Doctor William holt from the Kennedy school of government he's the author of the book China's crisis of success. What do might criticisms towards president trump and his handling. Of the Chinese. Person all I would say ease ease taking very forceful position which I believe needs to be taken. But he's not doing it in concert with the Germans the French the British the Canadians we have no friends as we as we try to negotiate this. I I look at that is being in the state it or MIA. It is it a mistake made made definitive it's one of a series of future mistakes and one. No one mistake news. Nine and getting together with our allies in fact were hurting our allies as much as we're hurting China now the whole thing about cars. Well and we're gonna going after German cars. And steal. This to steal penalties. Almost exclusively. And her allies that we import very very little steal from China. So that's that's one huge mistake second huge mistake is is not. Focusing down on the issues like intellectual property it. When he's got the same IP problems that we have. Every week in Great Britain has those problems France has those problems and we should be arm in arm with our allies saying hey. We are really gonna put the screws to unless you stop this crap. They add that that's they that and and you've got a guy who's the heed these voice boisterous city he. He would be the guided deliver that message that my gosh you need a few friends. Yeah. And the other thing is news to me he's trying to destroy the system by who actually. We get these things resolve the WTO. There's a dispute the the whole world trade system. Hinges on a dispute settlement system under the WTO. If you don't have that working even Boeing's dispute with Airbus and this spirals into a disaster. But trump is refusing to appoint judges and trying to cripple the WTO just because he doesn't like international organizations. So work consistently shooting ourselves in the foot. We we we have this fear of China. But one of my observations has always been the best status symbol of a wealthy Chinese person is to get the hell out. Is that still the case Brady if you if you attain wealth in China. Is it still the case where the first thing you want to do is your family out of there all your money. It's particularly true in. Usage and being is cracking down on everything and in Washington and our media that scene news showing you know powerful and is that the Chinese seated as a sign of insecurity. And coming instability. So. I never ran into a middle class or our upper class Chinese family. Does entrant he has money in its kids because they still send their kids over to scrutiny be improved their education infrastructure over the last thirty years he must've seen dramatic improvements in education we've got a great education system but. But ours is still a better and they still send their kids in droves to American universities PI am and and we should welcome that right unfortunately the current administration is is cracking down that two and it's are part of the reason those are spending a lot aren't they spent sending a lot of spies over in those in those kids. Negate a lot of this sale of their kids but they're not there there in the army. They're. There. There refuse spies and you know and done so paying started opening China he said when you open the windows if you flies gunmen and and when we. Deal with foreign businesses and four and students. There there are few spies him. But that the benefits to us. Are so overwhelming the right thing is you open the window and you try to catch the flies. And we're actually pretty good catching flies. So. It's important that we not become a country that knows. The price of everything in the value of nothing. Well stated. IE if I had another six hours or so weak it continue this conversation and really make some headway. Adding I would just gonna have to pick up the book the name of the book is China's crisis of success. Might be good Christmas gift for when your pro friends. Our guest has been. I'll give you the good news first the Dow is up 208. Points and I still like lower oil prices oil's down two dollars a barrel at 4788. But we have some news that we need to cover blue apron if you remember them folks they went public with in the last year to they're treating. Well Christine tell you and then housing numbers came out this morning I was actually in mixed bag on housing. And then a lot of conversation regarding the sprint T-Mobile hi everybody it's burying Christine Dunn with you here. But Tuesday morning and you were all ready to go on that blue aprons story. Less than treating it less than a dollar did you ever use their service I have never use their service and of people who have high I was a customer reuse customer did you like the meals and now they know really Dinah. Took too long to prepare and I don't wanna get my fish from Texas no offense to Texas. A bit of fresh air. They and it was. It is it took the thirty minutes to prepare and then what happens is you have all those bags sitting in your fridge. And then you go out to dinner one night in and you end up throw stuff in and uses do it in and then I had issues with the freshness the united opened things up in the lemon would be dried out they get just. It was that it was degree in angry so I was I should have shorted the stock because I I knew this when they went public but I didn't. It's amazing how those indicators and Ashley that was one of the problems that we stated before you know why people like you probably missed revenue estimates as the fulfillment Sanders. Having problems again what you were experiencing was it's probably a direct result of I imagine in India the you know you have other options there's a grocery store and most every count right so if you don't like it now in the grocery stores cut and that does senator if you lock in your grocery store they have the food kits already ago. They do they do and and you know of course an Amazon bought whole foods that change the game as well. Yet there I got its director of fulfillment and have the aid have you tried the whole foods delivered. I haven't tried to hold its literary uses different strategies different service in any island to Jim wouldn't you Asahi Israelis and to card unity is a good yeah it's been great you know I can choose which grocery store want them to go to US opposed to putting you on the revenues. Few cents isn't you know the they hire these they call them personal under the Heidi shoppers. And and you can direct text with them on the so as they're looking at stuff that they think something doesn't look hitters earnings and stock. They were text chief through the app and say do you want me to make a change. So that's allowed me to do some quality utility can do using the other service that's tough though you're in a meeting or summit then some is you know under fifteen about your apples the. Please try to schedule in situated I'm not too worried about yeah idea thanking me kind of figure around the the system there but yeah so Yahoo! apron headed for bankrupt they edit the at a gonna make it tie you know it in the analysts aren't saying at this time but. Yes 75%. Decline since mid July. When they reported earnings in November they missed third quarter revenue numbers and they had to cut jobs and other definitely struck. Chuck has a active prediction on wall that he made in June of two when he seventeen seemed a blue apron would be done. Within five years 85 years of those 2017 so that we had to do pull that for tomorrow let him take a victory lap. Old son doesn't yet another he's pretty close and he said to five years ago and it might be via a stroke that is so. It is true toll Tuesday known. Housing numbers this morning. We get those the word I thought they're gonna be said a lot of. It makes a lot of apartments and you know they're focusing on the apartments and then and then you know one of the things in us have been pointing out is the fact that we're getting some. You know mixed data here and maybe some distortions even on the data because of all the weird weather been happening not having you know hurricanes. Resulting in one of rebuilding in the south which can impact members there but then those wildfires out west yes you know affecting the ability to pills now. There are so last. So it's gonna be interesting to see how how that shifts and innings and lowered down that he wildfires hopefully have any impact on the Fed tomorrow. The data. So definitely one of the points of interest in this. I meant I'm back. I'm dying to us to hear the Fed notes tomorrow they say that. You know at 232 more of the markets were rallying now in which it usually does by the latter if you know this but. Usually in the 24 hours leading up to the Fed meeting so today markets owes me it's just. All because they're hoping for good news. And the Fed and then tomorrow will be flat until we get to fifteen and then if it is good news if the Fed says Jarrett take our foot off the pedal. Then hold smokes he used to you yet 500 ports and get that Santa rally island Arlen maybe I don't know no Santa Santa rally is. Did you know equally that it always at the end it's end of the year in the first 23 days of the next year that's that's your Santa rally in if you hit a tea. If you don't get back Christine that's that's a big very negative indicator if you don't get a little worried about with the yet. Not as worried as I am though about this. Print T-Mobile deal when they used in the green light. Yeah and you know what a lot of people are worried about is what this means for consumers can is that you know. Consolidating that way only having three major players at this deal goes through breaks my me nicely higher prices. Usually right usually that's I mean that's the that's the build that no look air would be heading up. He is at college there are long to drop the gear but whatever his name is he say I don't know it's going to be good for customers. Yes it yet they always say that I mean. If they are saying that it could result in lower prices and superior service by its. But historically you know people voicing concern that once you know that kind of consolidation in just lands too much control them in the hands of the few. What about the Wally connection to a variety of the two company's core. Corporate parents are wildly customers to sprint is controlled by soft Bank of Japan. And T-Mobile is controlled. By its German parent Deutsche Telekom and you know there are concerns. By governments not just in the US but around the world. That plowing my represented national security threat and in fact one of its top executives is actually being detained in Canada right now as it believes she's out of jail but she's living in her apartment in Vancouver. Men who have an apartment that's her apartment. Right ankle bracelet on these so in Japan and officials there have sad they're developing procedures for procurement in areas like communication arts and information technology. You know in order to tried protect against. You know these these concerns are coming out regarding hallway. It's but that has been raises concern for about this merger specific. I would think so I would think so. I'll read you the first paragraph of this story because it Casas gentlemen 120 million dollars. CBS. Corporation said it will not pay former chairman and chief executive Leslie Moonves. Any. Of his 120. Million dollar severance package. After reviewing the findings of a probe into allegations he sexually harassed and assaulted. Many women during his career does giving more damning than that. Right right and while he is definitely. Making moves to fight against that decision. You know most disturbing to me is I think he will I 88 but some of the story is an indication rain mean he's going to he's gonna claim that some of it was. Consensual right he's denying it is non consensual Disney. The New York if you're the New York Times yeah I mean it's. Is if it sounds like angry at I mean again this guy it was out of control brain. Eight. For I I've not his advisor by any means but it. I don't think he wants to drag this out I don't think he wants these women. You know going on the evening news explaining what happened in lengthy interviews grade and I the going quietly I would be it first I wouldn't do woody did didn't need the actions of this guy which would amazes me an EO blesses what in his sixties. So it was back in the eighties. In the early ninety's. Win every corporation in America any company it had more than two employees was doing sexual harassment training. Because that was when the judge would start coming down from the court system rain that's that's when it. You know it became very apparent that this was no longer acceptable behavior back in the sixties and seventies. It was it is you know it was just the norm in there are no judgments now it is that we all got trained in the late eighties if you work for big company. I can assure you Hewitt's or sexual harassment training well evidently this guy missed the class. Yeah and you know what was disturbing to me reading this particular article was just kind of it was just him immunity seem to a culture of it at CBS specifically mean Charlie heroes of that flower Jeff fatal that was never an NBC right well is so yup but Jeff speaker who is sixty minutes executive producer who else having issued allies did Jessica who is. Who was an actress on the on Mexico Campbell and had a settlement also beat rate her fellow actor. You know she is he so Elan and he still lines them rain so pervasive throughout the organization matches. Appreciate have to be wary of false accusations too though right breathe they gave me that's. That that's what would could really hurt the knee to movement. If there's a series of false accusations because it's easy to make the accusation. But if it's unfounded. You're really ruining somebody's life Italy and and dad that's. You know. That that would be the the the ending. Bullet if you will but the hundred Disco lost a 120. Million dollars it now. Don't feel bad for and we don't have to have go on meet Pedro and Canada. Views make it sixty million a year. Well and chino. And he violated company policies breached his employment contract. Didn't cooperate with the investigation. And mean rightfully so losing the severance package and. Be markets you know. Today I hate to say it but the Dow was up 300 points earlier in our 172 we're take a look at the markets when we come back replete trivia. Population that are retiring every day I think the number next years something like. 1015111000. People a day turning age 65. As that happens those are people that are retiring that creates worker shortages that created that segment of the population is more demanding of services. I hate it in the need to hire people for for help. I I I don't see a recession in the cards but. You know these people are again they're wagering their own money and that's what the market's telling us as as the market goes down. A lot of people that owe more than a 100000 dollars. Of student molds and a lot of people hitting sixties that still Hudson holds. What changes your consumer behavior. You know can buy a house when you're 200000 dollars student debt no initial that there's hundreds of thousands of people that are in that situation not likely to get married. I have a family want joke I don't want to that's part of the interviewing process they teach my kids that. You know chip and affirmative and credit card debt in America. That said we started to wrap up some negotiations with Canada Mexico. A lot of negotiations with Europe have pretty much been dealt with. And when you look forward you do have to ask. How bad could things get but also how good thing could things get it trade tensions either get worse or better and the big the big question has to do which the second largest economy in the world. And yeah if trade negotiations go worst or China that I would have concerns about this stock market currently about the length of this bull market that we've seen is that something that should give investors pause. Well yeah I mean right now technically speaking we are in the longest bull market. In history and that would be a picture of time without a 20% market correction but you know as you can point out there have been several other periods of time where markets have lasted a really long time. 1980 seven's 2000. Near the store are very unhappy people stop in their driveways to smoke. And they called the special meeting to voice their complaints. Five awaits as Barry do you think the boom and commerce that Salem let mr. North Hampton are all having will continue. Went 200 pounds have their own pot shops. I think the towns that have it will see a benefit. To a there's a lot of affluent western suburbs. And and and suburban towns that are saying well in this tend to be very conservative. And they say we don't want those shops. In our town. Might point to are the town fathers and he should look at what's going on in Colorado because Colorado is that we have the longest case study that you can observe. And if you look at retail sales in those communities they've gone up they've had other problems I don't wanna make it so it's all. You know news roses but. The the as I think he's been an uptick in driving while impaired violations. The gators deserved of a variety of problems that economically. When you look at the impact. It has he just it makes sense seeing you think about it it was they say one point six billion in sales Moore is an arrogance and very New York there's Salem point seven billion in revenue and tack from that so if you look at that and all of that revenue now. Goes through a payroll tax you know these these are all people that are getting health insurance they easiest. You have to look at it in it was all very anyway critics seem amount canvases being consumed today as was being consumed prior. Two that the legalization. But now the revenues going through our economy it's gonna count towards GDP is gonna count towards unemployment they did just there there are better if they're pros and cons of everything. And I'm just joining us of the pros that is negative aspects of it as well I talked to a friend of mine over the weekend as a doctor. And I asked him I said. You know he's vehemently opposed to camp assistant yup a carry it would it would about. The use the medical benefits and he acquiesced to suggest you you know what the they're learning more and more about the medical benefits associated with canvas but he was very concerned. And you as a parent must be really concerned because you're raising young kids. How how the year did you have my kids are 1513. And eight I can't imagine that that's going to be really and I am definitely concerned about I mean I don't deny the fact that our medical but it definitely need to I just feel like. Cases and use it in the contacts and it's meant to be used yet or recreational use. You know I'm not really keen on the idea had we have to our kids away from it right in the it's so important to keep. You know so you make education differently anything right I mean it's like having a store that sells wine in your community. On the as a fifteen year old greater than sophomore is well you know that's when they start drinking. And I think it's on its can't confirm it. It's the summer eight season tenth grade now ray yet so I can assure you. You're gonna have behavioral issues with her this. Based based out of this that's based on my experience of raising five children it's just like clockwork in answering her 1516. But a lot of parties analysts law a lot of parties of the woods speaking of parties in the woods chick filet. Into the radius so because not only commute by your gold from leader bank you can sell your gold back to you and thank. Boeing's raising their dividend. Sit what do you think of this in terms of stepped buybacks and Tara do you see them as a good sign for companies like he used illustrator I. You know like I vacillate back and forth to the benefit to buybacks. Is it's better theoretically from a tax standpoint rate is as a shareholder you're not paying tax on. And it's supposed to make the stock go up in price. The problem is GE did a lot of stock buybacks. And what they should have been doing is they should have been paying down that debt reinvesting. And it was just a nightmare I prefer cash dividends paid the after the GE experience. My attitude on it is if you're paid dividends don't tell me you're gonna buy back the stock because I look at. Stock buybacks is being manipulative do you really believe in the company if you're really going to be profitable just pay a higher cash dividend now I know that bad side of that many of you said on Ottawa the cash dividend is that pay taxes. But then it's legitimate these buybacks. I think we may learn that these buyback programs were somewhat. Cook in the books made an error Hollis to describe I am not a big I'm not as big a fan. Buybacks as they used to do you think it's you get temporary inflation of the stock. Yeah it's temporary I think it's artificial. It's an American you'd pay a dividend paid in cash and be done. Netflix is taking over the movie business when you look at what they're spending Christine it's down. But it's up to 200 million dollars permanently for one movie for one movie and you know I mean they sad that they wanted to fees the most prolific movie studio in Hollywood and they're plans are you know putting them in the race to do that. They're set to produce nine. You know they're finding Netflix is finding that to creating original contents in particular is helping to drive at their subscription it's the and so you know he they've reported nearly seven million new subscribers in the third quarter alone. But most of their new subscribers are coming overseas. He leaky did have did domestic growth which I find astounding because I. It seems like everybody I know. Either has their own Netflix account has access to one great year like yours your kids will always use your Netflix and. Well and they are seen filler like forty. Right the big mirror I think we're seeing that in the Nielsen numbers as well aren't they because they are seeing a larger number of non English yes users of streaming services so I mean. He seeing all the trends just start to two to converge here. But can't looks just sing that you know they want to create about when he original pieces of the year with budgets ranging from twenty to 200 million. So that's a pretty significant chunk of change right there. Then they're going to be producing like so called indie film and not just about 35 films a year and then they have a whole other section of their movie making business and documentaries animation so I mean really covering again that they are they are you they're taken over the world and and there are. Attracting some big names Meryl Streep yes Ben Affleck. It's perceived either acting I mean these are not small names that they they're really going for quality and they want to dominate the Emmys and the Oscars and campaign Oscar pressed now. In order to improve our credit score and how. And utility payment this wealth of experience. Is coming up went a new way of calculating credit reports so that they can start capturing some of this information traditionally hadn't been included. Mean traditionally you know credit reporting agencies had just lifted just low grade you know early Harlow Harlow credit card is that kind of think yeah. But now they're saying Harry well but that doesn't give the whole picture of consumers' ability to pay rate is 35% of the population. We'll never. Right rated they're never gonna have a mortgage if you arrows can be renters that they have cellphones and boy that's a bill you know. Us via rental unit yes I mean definitely and utility payments as well very that would capture the renters fracas but tend to have to pay the utility of the heavy they won't cut off your electricity but Duchscherer cut up yourself. It happened at the pictures right you YouTube is being written every I think has that ought to pay and the Tucker give yourself on and are prepared you read checked. Notes on OPEC news is that the that's how you do on their acid gonna take a look at potentially Eamon. Connected to People's Bank accounts. In order to show the people responsible in how they handled their cash. Bouncing checks and not bouncing checks and things like that as well. The ticket like that but of course that the flip side of that that other people worry about is that are you. Inflating the numbers public people who probably might not be good people to Lemond Q by including in those things. That's a good question now you know the if these numbers though. Have an improvement it might take somebody who's going to buy car right that has no credit neck in that you go to buy a car and you know credit. You're going to be paying 14% interest right if all the sudden you can say well I've been paying money. T-Mobile bill on time for three years and I've been paying my A National Grid bill on time for you know for five years. Maybe your interest rate goes from 14% down the sixers. That's a big difference indeed terms of consumer costs re exactly big benefit. Speaking of debts student loan debt. Has set a new record I think were to be reporting on this virtually every ninety days on the increasing levels of student don't loaned how much are we up to now we are. Up to one point 465. Trillion dollars which is double the amount since June 2009. Interestingly. Those loans that were given out in 2012. And have deep faulted at a faster rate than any other loan cohort since the financial crisis and they're sitting at that's because that age group which. If you think about it that means that those are people aged 24 to 33 yeah. You know they have a lot of trouble establishing their careers coming in yet financial crisis they did finding a position back in 2012 took almost three times longer than to get. And it took awhile but I hear the numbers that should make us all a little bit nervous. Two point seven million borrowers who over a 100000 bucks then. I mean. That's like having a mortgage Christine yet again non deductible mortgage rate in India and I'd like you get nothing for more an at bat is. A disheartening about 700000. Borrowers who 200000 dollars or more. It completely. You know infringes upon their ability to get started in their lives. The the the numbers in and I'm not saying we should absolve people of these debts are pointing notice that I had no idea the debts were of this magnitude. The about the cost of private college now you're looking at anywhere from 40000 times a year late and peanuts. It regulate the big things. This should be. The turning point where people leaders say. Jackie and Fortis on him to join the service or can't afford a song to go to community college. Or can't afford I'm gonna go to state school and and you know again there's an attorney.
