This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chuck Exxon. It might be cold outside but that job market is hot how hot. Well jobless claims had drop actually 49. Year low that's the number of people claiming unemployment insurance. GE shares are surging right now GE shares or about 10%. And we talked about at which age did you start saving for retirement hi everybody it's Berrian truck with you here it is a Thursday morning it's a chilly Thursday. Morning as I mentioned earlier. But son of a gun truck the jobs report came out this morning 49 year low. Yeah it's good numbers if it breaks a trend that we've seen for the last ten weeks of increasing jobless claims so. It's it's good to see that he made we're seeing a break there and maybe the date is improving. But it's it's one week he claims you know it's I am I don't put a ton of stock into it just is this tends to fluctuate the four week moving average. Is still above where it was couple weeks back so we still not broken that longer term trend but it's good to see because I know this is there that I'd been watching Boris at okay. We need to see if this is you know something to be concerned about. If we get a couple more that support this they wouldn't kind of put that to bed pearl. Yeah I'd been watching I used to watch it very closely anytime lose about 350 I didn't like you know now at where we're talking about 200 not 6000 people. And what occurs to me and here's a question I have. It's 206000. People but what has the population done in the last 49 years well it's obviously significantly bigger now. So let's say I I that makes the stat in my estimation that much stronger. The other guy couple points and automate as it relates to the jobless claims report that we got this morning news. Quit rate is very high people are quitting their job Gibbs at rates we haven't seen I think it's three and a half million people every week equipment a month every month okay yeah thank you. And then the the reason every week don't be employed yeah. The reason for which people are quitting their jobs or talk about that later in the show as well they'd. It's is not about money. It's one of the main reasons. That people are quitting their jobs they don't like their commute to and boy those of us who live in the New England area could sure appreciate that. Yeah I mean it's. It's it's a big thing I remember when I when I moved from Somerville. You know my commute in the mornings was typically. At at the time probably 2530 minutes but going home he could be an hour to an hour and a half just because of trying to get through the city and everything. In not having to do that makes a big difference in in audio life. It's it really is it's just you think about all the time that saves you yup it saves you for five hours a week. Over the course the years 250 hours you know two week and a half that you don't have to spend in the car. JPMorgan's. Steven Toussaint who's a leading analyst at JPMorgan. On General Electric. Upgraded the firms have shares in GE to neutral. This morning and I if they use this morning. The shares initially surged forward by about 12% right now GE shares are trading at seven dollars and 39 cents a share up about well almost 10%. Yeah and in Tucson was one of the first analysts to really downgrade them significantly gave bearish on the back in May if when he sixteen about two and a half years ago now at twenty bucks a share yet the stock was almost thirty dollars a share he said hey this doesn't look so good actually a great short and he was dead on with this now what he's saying now is not so much that hey this company's gonna recover and they're going to be great but he saying. Look I think we're probably fairly priced right now given what the environment is and he's effectively saying. I don't know if you can get that much worse at this point. We're just what I look for on G1 they need to raise capital how'd they do it you know the issue shares at seven box I don't know. Do they borrow money bond market saying they don't really want to lend them money you have and then the other questions I have in and I don't know that there's an answer to that. What is your unfunded liability as a relates to those long term care insurance policy Cecil 20/20 five years ago. I knew we still don't know that it. There's still is no good accounting for that and is that it's just it's one of the biggest questions facing the company their market cap now is down to 64 billion dollars. You know this was a company that even if you just go back to the beginning of this year. The market cap was you know close to I think a 150 billion dollars even ninety billion dollars is wiped out this year. And then ninety but so are my questions are how do you raise the money that you need. How much do you obese policyholders for long term care for it's and then the third issue that I have with GE is. He financed a lot of jet engines in you finance a lot of turbines for countries like Ukraine. I get paid back. And what do those payment schedules look like in how regularly how. How often they miss and payments on those. In and how would your ability to repossessed those turbines. Yeah we haven't seen too many problems bear on this front you know recently that was more kind 1520 years ago that's what they ran into into the financial crisis I think a lot of that got washed out at this point. I think that the big question as far as how they go about doing an act they air a raise of capital. I don't think they wanna do straight equity raised at seven bucks a share it's gonna have to delude themselves significantly. This is weird guy like Jeff Immelt really has to be called into question because he was using their cash they're free cash to buy back the damn stock. He should have been using that cash to pay down debt. I think their best option might be issuing convertible debt and give up that might be the past that they have to take his debt with the equity upside if things go well. Now maybe that's kind of thing Buffett would go in and do and he do the private deal right he would he'd say they can he do a deal where he'd say look I'll buy a gimme three billion dollars. But I want. My knee eight billion dollar by three billion dollars or ten billion however however much you need I need to be old converted. Six bucks a share you know it T it's interesting is this. Company at this point. Doesn't fit the profile of Buffett just as he doesn't like companies at this kind of instability normally. But you also look at it in you say okay he might see something there where he says okay. I'll be Al Albee your backstop to what you get squared away in any given the Bank of America it is the difference there is the ultimate backstop was the US government who said we're not gonna let BankAmerica fails that I mean. I look at what Warren Buffett did Denon that deal. He paid a boatload of money for something that effectively had almost no risk by the time he actually bought. So gee I don't think is going to be back stopped by the US federal government and so to have a different case but it is one restart saying. She does does Buffett start taking a look at this it's not what you normally would do but in play in this opportunities there if he dies. Take a position and he could by the whole damn company. Always get a 120 billions and anti about a company twice he wanted to. A lot of volume here's a question though so let's say that your GE shareholder in OK okay we're talking about the company trading you know 64 billion dollar 730 share somewhere in that range. What price do you accept though because just a year ago with seventeen bucks a share. You know do you take it 10% premium say okay will sell eight bucks a share late that would. What how do you get people on board to actually sell the thing what would he have to take is a premium now. I don't know that he if it's anybody's guess I I don't see buffet actually buy the whole company. What I could see a guy like Buffett Digg it and we're using him as an example could be hedge fund as well as the financing deal. Sure and they come in I think the play here would be preferred stock heard to your point convertible stock and are convertible bonds. And you say hey you guys need cash how much T need we need ten billion. All right here's ten billion pay us 8% on the ten billion while we're waiting yup and then we want the right to convert debts. Right and get above nine bucks a share we want to be able to convert at nine box you know you know that's that's the kind of deal that you'd probably name I wish I had a spare ten billion line around. You wanna get an article document call it a given policy of I want to see if tell that I got a hundred bucks if he wants to put the other nine billion and men. And November of 2018 survey. A 1161. Employee adults determined the average age at which. This group began saving for retirement was 31 years old the most common reason given for not starting sooner chock. Was not making enough money nice source for this is nationwide retirement institute. Yeah and it's a little discouraging to see I remember when when I first started working. I think it was within about three or four months I started actually putting money into my retirement plan at that point and there wasn't much I think you might have been get twenty bucks a pay period at the time and they said OK this is probably something that that makes sense to do when gradually over four or five year period. I got to the point where I was able to say who can pick and start in getting close to maxed this out now. But it's you know that the biggest reason the people said they couldn't do was say they were making enough money. Look it was exactly like it was making a boatload of money the first give your I was nervous ahead I just got to get the habit started just trying to get things rolling. Even if it's not a not put new you know 500 bucks a week and at that point but hey if it's twenty bucks hates it's eventually get you know lead to something in. Did the big thing then was hey whenever I got raises I'd say okay let's increase this first as opposed to. As it's actual auction as well it is the the the challenge that I think a lot of people face is you know their you graduate from college. The first time he's had a paycheck or you know steady paycheck he may have had summer jobs we've made some money right yeah he had a steady paycheck. And you say well I gotta rent payment to make you might have a car payment to make. You might have student loans that are you're saddled with that so they do what I'm surprised by an I don't know if you guys see this or not but it. When I was jury Ager when I was 2223 years old who's very common. For people to have a full time job. But also a part time job where it like some kind of a gig. Now I guess today could be you know you work forty hours a week for your you know the that your main job they need to drive for Marbury could do something else. But that was that was very coming right I don't see that at least not with them when youth that are in my life. Well I think there there are an awful lot of people that have multiple jobs out there yeah I mean I think you talked just about any Cooper driver that you know yeah he's out there I know that incident earlier just about all of them yet not be in official job. But it certainly is something where they've they're doing. You know something to earn money and all these other places. The and talk about all these people who will you know or on all these dog walking apps and things yeah that you know a lot of that's actually a very kind to me that's lucrative. Are we up you can make Hitler load of money doing that if you're in this it's better to be in the city you're in a highly dense densely populated area. Because they can just walk you know what the other one that's related to that is that you can make a boatload of money with that if you while board dogs that your house yes. You can make out they can meet I look at some of the race there just is you know my parents have a dog and they've been aborted because they don't wanna through the dog to a kennel when they're traveling right it's big money and you know if he putts and later tonight. Where they arts like 75200. A nice yes. Well. Yes get rid of the damn dog in the guy really needs its charter and they had time to drop it drop dead dog in the guy's got you know eight to ten dogs there every night nasty and you know like. Menus reconvene at that point obviously it's not that simple book you know it's it's still it's hard work and make a boatload of money doing it's hard work. I everybody it's Barry Armstrong and I'm joined today by executive vice president from leader bank mr. Jake tool and were talking about this account today. It's called the Zuma rewards account and the thing that really caught my eye on this account is. It's a savings account the sentiment that you guys are providing two point 05%. EPY. On that account how do you do. Yet it's one of our most popular. Retail banking products vary so. It's it checking and savings companion Oka and if you qualify. You get some great reward so for example you 2.0 5%. EP wise you're savings account up to 400000 dollars 100000. You get 1% cash back and all of your eases spending your debit card that's good. Eight get each here reimbursements if you use in other things he Tia. And so do qualify I'm traveling in a Matta town there's not a leader bank branch nearby. I can use that ATM card number and be reimbursed the three dollars to order exactly. That in so the benefit of that is that really expands a breach network yeah he's in need yen. Job market is pretty strong in American workers are quitting. At the highest rates chuck since 2001. Unfortunately 2001 to parade around the time we hit a wall yet it is good news to see. You know people quitting jobs who say on July what you wanna see people quitting on people usually only quick jobs either a if they have something better in the pipeline. Or beat if they feel confident enough. To return those typically the reasons why people. Leave jobs voluntarily lot of times they're doing it because it's on winning get a race right yet you see that quite a bit I've I've of body mind you that was the situation that he just was and he actually to move cities in order today moved from New York to Boston. When he got more money going because that's a little probably a little or consulate give with a better deal more money actually also know that. But you know that's that's why you typically see people leaving voluntarily you don't see a lot of this. During times when things are tough 20082009. In which he got a job you're glad to have the quick rate plummeted during those times and so. A higher quick rate typically does bode well it doesn't necessarily get indicate that it's gonna continue but it at least tell educate people feel confident. Right now. We better hope tempered isn't here this 23% of workers. Have quit their job because of the bad commute. Actually are bad commutes not bat an unsigned but it does I'm here Sorrell is certainly not but imagine if you're due and in rush hour oh forget it. Right okay what's it what's your typical commute 4045 minutes not even that's usually 3035. Florida about it L averaged just you know traffic via via the average commute in the country's rate around twenty. 25 yep lines and about 17 am I've always the buy whole career. I've always made sure that I'm close to work as I tend to work longer hours yeah policies do. And and that's that's always been my mindset. According to US census in 1990. The average commute time was less than 22 minutes. And today Americans spend 26 minutes commuting to work each day. That's just one wave. Pool. Yep and so what that works out to it ends up being. In extra 34 point six hours in transit each year. And so notes in it it adds up and do a part of the reason they won't feel like we have less time in our Dan I was because we're spending it. Commuting from both ends and you know it may not body that much when you're single or you're an empty Nester. Where it really becomes problematic is when you're raising kids book as you have yet he years your network and it's. 4 o'clock in your pocket stay till 53 and I can get out of this meeting till 530 and then I have a ninety minute commute to get home about it yet I'll look like what do the kids can eat. The one that's always baffled me in that case is the case of someone who lives just across the border of Massachusetts in New Hampshire he commutes down into Boston because eighth time commitment. You're in your car an hour and a half each way in beat I actually ran the math on it just because the extra gas that you may use the extra Wear and tear on your car. You've got to be making I think it was I came out it was an extra eight to 101000 dollars a year we use including attacks two I including the tax benefit that you get a New Hampshire to make volatility there's no tax benefit because if you live in New Hampshire and you work in Massachusetts yet to pay Massachusetts with a right idea silly I have always wonder I forgot that you still have to pay to help. I'm look at them like you're paying a boat will keep you got higher property tax that you also have to pay but think about how many companies have opened an office. Fido fidelity and huge price right over the board you've seen a whole lot more of that popping up bookstore I've always I've always wondered because you see where you lived in Somerville you see this line of cars. Coming down it's 7 in the morning as the only time New Hampshire residents can get into the city and still be on time so every license plate on 93 south at 7 AM. All New Hampshire residents coming in chuck I've got news for the rush hour from New Hampshire starts a lot earlier than 7 am Bono that's when they get to Boston you know it starts at about 5530. The majority of workers. According to a recent survey said that they saw no salary increase in the year 2818 am a little surprised that. Yet this according to data collected by Bankrate dot com. According to this survey 60s60%. Or more than 60% of Americans. Say they did not get a pay raise their current job or better paying job. What I do think is interesting here Bankrate dot com probably selects for people who a have Internet access. And be who you are or interest in actually reporting this. So you know someone who for example. Is. You know it a truck driver. Might not have a whole lot of time to go on Bankrate dot com and vote even though they've gotten a 7% raise this year and you know aside I wonder how they controlled for industries I wonder how they controlled for. You know geographic. You know splits his. Bankrate dot com you might just get a whole bunch people from Massachusetts or new Yorker California. You might not get people who were involved in tracking you might not get oil drillers you know you just. Get the employers there is the the people that I know chuck and in the fellow employers that I talk to. And they'll tell you hate that we're giving we're we're giving raises to our workers because we're paranoid about losing. We'll give you another example I go to Bankrate dot com on a regular basis. And invoke mr. and oversaw. You know it's I get it right I didn't see it anywhere so. Even people who go there I probably go there once a week then Garcon point on this is a poll for you in a hole. Our poll question is did you start saving for retirement before age 31. 61%. Of our listeners did in fact start saving for retirement prior to age 3138%. Saying no they did not which is. You know in the thing is by the time we thirty if you started saving when you're 2223. When you say maybe underground 150 grand. If you vigna getting close to the Max by a couple years Indiana then it's that's real money. In the gives it more time to compounds that and still another thirty years yeah forty years to come out. We're be back in order to be talking about two Americans marry for love or money we've got the answer to that and a lot more come. Life goes on FaceBook and followers on Twitter. Crude oil is up twenty cents a barrel gold down two dollars and forty cents and talents and 210 year treasury is set to none in the and the British pound is trading at a dollar 26 despite bitter. The tumultuous political environment. Yeah that the couple things that we've seen recently the date of the last three weeks. Has been better at shown a little bit more stability would suggest okay. Even though things were weakening for a few months heading in the last few weeks and maybe things there's billions stabilizing at a lower level now I'm not growing necessarily the same rate they wore them. But at least stabilizing so I think the date has been decent. And then you've had a little bit of optimism on the China issue. And we're still sorting through the mess that is regs it which I don't think we have any further clarity on Vietnam but I I think the date has been better and I think more optimism on China. Has at least kind of you know had things settle in a little bit. Not into this range. A couple comments on commuting area goes seventeen miles from Halston to Wellesley and it's never under an hour each way. What time you leave. Ten years ago it took 35 minutes that's something it's a very good point if you look at the commuting. You hear people tend to focus on the city's right how long's it take to get around in the city. The suburbs of becoming nightmares while. I remember even growing up if if I was sitting in towards the city if you left any time after that 645 yeah. You were jams in New York absolutely jammed at that point. If you left before it took you thirty minutes to get in the off after it was our it was to there's a strong dividing line where there was a whole lot of middle ground there. I moved to Boston in January of 1990. Reaches a really bad recession you guys are too young to remember that it. In January of 1990 there was no traffic going into Boston that got laid off is just really noted the time nobody had a back nobody had it done now nobody had a job that he when he was working retail for about. Execs and nine months until the up back on the street. Do Americans marry for love or money finally we have an answer to that very perplexing question. I'm married for food personally if he should be co location the news when we're both good cooks 56% of Americans say they want a partner who provides financial security more than head over heels love. Really surprising. I think people get more realistic as they get older and marriages are occurring much later in life. Than they used to hate it if you're if you're in an I've been out of the dating scene for a really long time but. If you're 2530. Years old today. In your dating you're singling your but you're dating. In the and you find out that your date. You're the person your involved. As you know 100000 dollars a student loan debt to in 20000 dollars and of credit card debt in news kind of employed sporadically but not steadily it's going to be turn off the. Was that always been the case. You know me think about it like it always used to be from every movie of I've ever seen from the forties and fifties he's got a good job bode you know it's like dad always was paying them. I think with with any level of you know commitment like this it's a you can wanna know what your into them you obviously don't bring your W two is on your first date but. You know certainly punitive. Second day we used to do that second day. Now let's impolite to just be flash from around the bar vice. The interesting thing here when I got a chuckle out of some generation Z the people born between 1996 and 2010. They were the only age group to choose love over money where their roles the only ones who have never had to work actually got another youngster that's funny I remember when I was you know nine years old isn't it when the bigger they. Okay like you know wait until there'd be no in their twenties at least now I'm curious how that cohort ages and how the if they continue to follow up on afterwards or. The average age is now for first time wedding compared to fifty years ago gave connectors yet. You know what's longer great you know people are waiting longer to get married I just don't know. Is act I think the average age now for first time weddings at that was like 20/20 times yes so if you're looking for the median needs you know not averaged a comedian he's better her first marriage to have it by gender also. And this goes back to 1890 according to the US census so what are we go back to call at the 1960 ski yet this 1968. I don't ever buy every year I just have every ten years as it gives the 1960s so in 1960. The average man's first marriage was 23 point nine years of age the average woman's first marriage was a 21 point two years and what is it now. Today for men and actually this is only up to 2010 just does have another. Data point there for men in 2010 it was 28 point four verses 23 said vs 23 point nine. And for women it is up to 26. Point eight compared to 21 point two and about a five year bump on each of them. Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Is quoted as saying the first time you marry for love. The second time for money and the third time for companionship. I thought that was. Good to know felt I felt the need to share. A look at her digital Jack dealers and literature from the earth. And that is reflective of lower interest rates it certainly significant decline in Borchardt yeah mortgage rates down about oh less than a quarter percent but still dances to meaningful decline there. In particular. Mortgage applications to refinance a home won't increased 2% for the week still 34% lower than a year ago discuss a lot of that refinance activity. Just has dried up to so many people party 35 in two you know 34% mortgages. But you know you're seeing some decent activity for new home applications. With volume up 3% for the week and actually up 4% from a year ago so. Lower rates about in that quarter percent lower rate. Does seem to me making a difference in giving us some stability at the slot well that's that's kind of let him talk and in terms the data the Davids is. It's not showing a ton of growth then. But it's showing stability instability is good. While in and from what I've read it's hard for Jack the woody thank you for GDP in 2019 point two and a half 3% higher ones. Is now yeah. There. Looks like you and they're still going to be some collateral damage from just terms spore and supply lines back up again and things like that. You still have a delayed impact from the Fed raising just as the prime home buying season hasn't been hit yet since it we've had higher rates. And then also you don't have a new wave of tax reform coming in this year you know a year you've got. That one year lag now so its impact is muted numbers and year out so. I'm in the high ones I'm going I'm going 19221. Rate when it's also hasn't gone so right around to call. We asked the question did you start saving for retirement prior to age 31 a full 69%. Joining us on the line now from New York is Adam Johnson from bulls ivory dot com to post picks up there every single weekend she makes you checked out bull's eye briefed dot com. Adam thanks for joining us haven't talked in a little bit now. Now that's right well it's maybe last week I don't know. It it feels like credit if feels like a long time I guess it's only been a week but hey here we just as you out of the easy. I do he's got a man crush on Adam you know that's. Look at any port in the storm this market has been ready to go take it though. Well let's let's talk about it is not my view one it is the last few weeks of data even though it hasn't been great in some cases. It's at least shown stability and that's something we're lacking through a lot of October and November so I think the Davis putting is a little bit stronger I'm curious to get your thoughts on trade just in the evolution of what's going on. With the US and China at the moment. It's getting better. And OK you've been hearing paper we now beta I think we would ultimately it you know which by the way Ben. You know I've been getting pounded by people listening. And yet you know she be ideal and quite frankly property it he'll do yet they both do. Yeah yeah and even now. You know they're both playing our pocket and active at that they'd they'd. You know they they. They need to deal and they're kind of figured out the fact that there's people I got away packet of arrest that the and it has not gotten in the way back. We even had. Margaret announcements from audit the sleepy. In even think well you know maybe will post on our made in China when he went by by being here that it that the big deal so. Adam as far as one of the other risks that we we've discussed over the course of the fall now into the winter. The Fed over the last few weeks has made a series of have instant and at least up here. More Davos the two questions that I have number one do you think they're actually owned behave more dovish sleep. And number two how big Everest do you think the Fed is at this point. Number one. They won't pay. Definitely next week I think it will be at the point I'd be because. If they didn't in the market with their old like that it must be really bad for that mountain and I think they have. But question number two. They going be more dovish going at 29. The in 29 seed yet absolutely. And mr. outfit made that clear now whether that's because he felt pressure from the White House you know I mean trumpet out. You know the way people that pounding on me perspective. Please can't get pounded on again next week right. President is going to dump on mr. I know. Well that's kind of what truck very townspeople and the mission until they went. The bird what he started it who with you know dance he would chart you know on the White House earlier this week. And you know EP. His whole thing to take people the point of maximum pain then and then let up a little bit and then sort of meet somewhere in the middle. And I think he kind of did that with how I think how kind of buckled with that. Well I think I didn't disagree with you a little bit there at a I think Powell made a mistake I I think Powell would he said all I know what's gonna happen in 2019. Really. Yeah you'd you know what's gonna happen like he's a Smart guy but how the heck does he know any more then you know some of the other economists out there. Well you know he revealed that he is little nineties. In mattered that the rates begin period Packard the guy with the we've of the delete banker bird numbered years or leave it as well. But that's very different from you know sitting out the bed where you know you gotta work out a policy or diplomat. And some of those comments he made expand and a week ago. Sounded more like you know a guy pitching you know it's been transparent glass half of JPMorgan bad ankle that minority. It and the fact of the matter is all he has to do is say we're data dependent. Right we're we're we're gonna see with the Davis isn't. You know I think one of the things he's got to be looking at his labor costs and labor shortages you know if all the sudden you start seeing wage growth. What are we at now three. Yeah report want what's it what do you think the breaking point is on week it would it would affect got a five. Yet reported a case that's where the wage growth. Wage price spiral and starts to become and what problems if we want no problem it would create long way way out. But let's say yet for. On wages but your your CPI still running you know 18 to may be in to 2.2. That's not. Problem really is there are more of a problem. Then that stuff that in sepia and and and I know that probably average you were at it or listeners that can be like. Come on Adam what the supermarket costs you more in the gap yeah all right I get it. And and Adam your forgetting that workers got screwed for the last ten years. And it would what was wage growth for the last ten years prior prior to this little bumper getting now wage growth was like 11 and a half percent it was not. Have a look at what economic growth was for the past abuse directed new normal with 2%. You know it's not like they got totally with any kind of all of that you're gathered. While the economy. Now. Adam I'm curious so you know we've talked kind of fun in general about the state of the economy. I'm curious in terms of how the heck you're treating this market right now is we've been range bound for about the last ten weeks now. Between about 2800 on the top end of the S&P. 2600 on the low way and but what exactly are you doing right now. Well my portfolio has been and a bouncing around on the market but I an up or I'm basically about it but we cut it up war and a here today so. That's important and I think we're gonna get that break at about double digit the that's OK look I'm I'm I'm making my subscribers money on making money it's not easy but. You know that's just where we are you know look at that. The sort of the best that. Defectors in the worst of Specter's health care number one group. This year but that he'd been a year to date. Historically helped her and conservative it's been expensive it's kind of where he could hide. But you're gonna change it with eight EA backed the government now that the app with people. It worked. It would do or coverage that's actually great for hospitals but a title like he he yea UnitedHealth Group market insurer in the country that it animal. By contrast. The banks down 13% in the week. I want the bank an expert but I'm paying more on because practically that week and there needs to. You know yeah I like JPMorgan Warren Buffett the batting JPMorgan in the third quarter. I like BankAmerica and at that clobbered I wouldn't buy it either no problem there that you do have to be selective but the fight to city got to pick your spot. I like I had that that reminded about that it was very well they're uncorrelated. But it's not beneath the I don't want. Is that what exactly that and he brought. Ali. Wait though. Felt you know way way way. The downside is you know he he just kind of pick your spot that and it's if it. Very good Adam we've got to run but we'll talk dia in just a little bit. And that's all time we have. Marty is kind of rally the Dow is up 47 points the NASDAQ down 23 crude oil's trading up 34 cents a barrel. At 5149. It's very chucked it Tucker from the opening to. About the signs of a stock market correction with market volatility up significantly since the start of October. It is something that is on the minds of many investors and Mike. One of the questions that I think people have today is it. Are a little bit more expensive than they have been on average when you look at the price of that stock compared to how much earnings they are expected to generate in the future in terms of where we stand compared some of those averages are there any numbers out there that are concerning to you right now. Well you know one of them is that if you look at the case Shiller price to earnings ratios average stocks right now are trading about 84% higher than a longer term average going back yea you'd really have to compare to say the dotcom bubble back in 2000 deceit. Had just how overvalued stocks are in now compared to times in the past. We finally have some positive headlines to read you'll Teresa may survive leadership test. But the past abraxis remains unclear China prepares. Policy to increase access for foreign companies have a couple of headline from today's Wall Street Journal would talk about that in a whole lot more here. It's very truck with you here on Thursday's good morning and thanks for stopping by. I thought the threesome main news was good news I got it last night I think there it's actually a little early made that for 35 o'clock yeah we got it. Late afternoon I'll call late afternoon early evening I don't know what the dividing lines they are but I heights I said to myself well this is good but you you're Alec ambivalence tons. You know the Shakespeare line full of sound and fury signifying nothing. That's what this system all a bunch of noise that doesn't mean if it does mean that at least you don't need to have a new leadership search for twelve months. Twelve months doesn't matter Ingrid rave that's the bill twelve months or does it matter. Three months dobbs that's the deadline for brags it's a hard deadline ED move them. It's get it done before then or don't do it they're still talking about that back door deal through Ireland see that. They can't figure out what to do was pathetic that well they can't figure out what the heck to do. Kick is it ironic. That the Irish. Have the British. In the English over a barrel they must love all the yo I think the only thing that would bettors at the Scott did. Yeah. You know but it lake they they must love you elect and we fought in the battle of the bottom. As uptight about that that. But at what wasn't expecting to go out there right now sixteen hundred's how did you know we are going to and heard rational is now long. You guys might want an interest in him anyway. Teresa may surprise in the battle bold. That's good that's better net sexy or cool. Teresa may surviving. Hurled party didn't turn off. Entirely yeah it just means that the tail risk that you had on this was that if Mae had not survived this vote. Then you've got a fine. Someone new to leave the Tories during a time when you're also trying to negotiate in some pretty much. You end up even further negotiating with yourself to to try to get someone in power than has opinion no effective power. Against the EU already Teresa may has limited ability to actually get any further concessions I think. And so a little different situation than we're in with China because. In Europe. The French and the Germans are basically telling the English to screw. And China and the United States are saying geez we need to do a deal here as we're both intro. Well and and and beyond that you look at just the closeness of ties the UK's way closer to the rest of your own. Then we are China knows as it is an especially terms of the I. Hi Hazen and treat him in. You know. A lot of French people working in England they're -- with people working in France alone and also we don't have a binding vote saying that we have to leave me of the Chinese fear of infants England does hate silly it's it's like a match that we had that hang over our head it's like OK now what are we in it now you know it's. It is. As nasty as our politics can get over here. Did you know there's works did I do it's it's it's just you're worried about second tally your Europe. You know you're you've been concerned. About directs it. For a few years. We'll just Europe you know as in general. It's just a lot of bad stuff has happened in Europe but you look back 500 years yeah it's just Europe in general it like I look at it and eight the growth is. Lake near honest it grotesquely over tax that. Strip that out eat you know music is that the taxation one thing but the growth is you know modest at best. In terms of you know the way these countries feel about each other it's come out the last couple years hate they still don't like each other even there that even though there's post and I is that news to you know but hey it's just like you're seeing now it's bubbling up and all these different countries. And I just wonder how much longer can stay together. Well we'll see. China is preparing to replace an industrial policy. Savaged by the drug administration as protectionist. With the new program promising greater access for foreign companies people briefed on the matter said this according to. Wall Street Journal last night 7 o'clock. So the interesting thing is that the core of made inched in China 20/20 five what what the core of it is is that China wants to become less reliant and other countries for supplying its own goods and resources and so forth. It wants to get up to. A core component percentage of 70% by 20/20 five from 40%. What's interesting it's not all that different actually what trump administration wants to do in the US is why do we care. Well the reason that we care is that what the Chinese Government does that. Is slightly different but really not all that different in some ways from what the US does. Is they have the state owned enterprise been creating completely on a level playing field for any kind of competition and they subsidize industries correct now the US does to a certain extent Madonna for a hundred years but not with the micromanaging that China does not at the level that China does and I think that's the big thing. See the reason I'm not too concerned about China 20/20 five is they'll implode. Thanks time. To see you it's like ace. What they're trying to do with 20/20 five. Is saying we're gonna have it rained every Thursday for forty minutes of Reading yet half an inch of rain it's it's it's. With the tried to do is on natural. I don't scribble what makes you think it's gonna implode. Any time you try to dictate that type of policy it's like trying to dictate what the weather's. Where is the issue that you see they'll wait where's the the healing beams. Will they have systems for that typical prison camp that's put that like eighth and they had they they had to go to the level where they dehumanize people to the point of putting them in prison camps and when they do that and that there's not much those people can do. You've figured that authoritarian. Will they think there's a huge BBC exposing on the ones their lives western China and you know that squadron that's based on religion not based. Cavity but the system they're building in that province what do you do the 200 million people in prison. Yes they're now rolling out that system to other. Provinces now. Like that exact social credit system that. Monitors every one you talked to everywhere you go and prevents you from getting on planes trains and automobiles a few of negative marks against you now the rule now countrywide. Well it's orwellian style out nets scary. A market's kind of today nasdaq's off seventeen points in the Dow is up 45 points. Greg here on the financial exchange radio network. Sky James is a frequent contributor to the New York Times and he wrote an article on December 4. He says it was published headlines for his boomers create a surge. In luxury care communities. Good morning Scott welcome to the shelves. So how would need to do define force a luxury chair community. Well these are kind of like I would call them actually ultra lecture is that like going onto another archer Alter electric cruise ships that you really go anywhere. Devastate their live there for the rest your life. The Alley the end and according your article. About 20% of baby boomers are about fifteen million people have saved enough money to afford. These private continuing care facilities with many expected demand. And very high standard of living so. It's I I I'm ironically. I'm assisting my folks in moving into one of these facilities. Tomorrow. And over and I'm gonna spend the weekend and I took a tour. And I felt like I was in a resort. Well I think that they need to that it may have based this editor has been called the continuing air return early eighties basically allows you to agent. You go any pitcher you're Il and basically we're fairly fixed amount of money that I you know have probably for the rest your life right the vote I among now the certain buildings and have a mutual advantage of these ultra ultra electric places where it. Five star resort. Gourmet dining in one of the findings were honest worst record got out of what you movie here. One of the problems is intended in a lot of weight. As the food is so good remember that remember the freshman fifteen when it went to college and it happened of people out there eighties because it was the end of the plate. So would I pick on the what does it cost to buy a unit in. In what I had been actually really good in terms is not a traditional investment in real estate but we have about a condominium building on that it was called an entrance C. As some that may or may not be were unable depending on the Dili east strike. And those fees give me a million dollars one point eight million adaptor that you pay monthly fee to live there that India to 111000 dollars a month. For a couple every authority within it is that for couples scatters at for the second person who can pay less than the primary person that you get a primary person maybe. It might be more a slightly more than that does not like he double in the spotlight like I'm a person. So the one that my parents are moving into Scott. A portion of their upfront fee is tax deductible because it's a health care related expense correct and then a portion of their monthly fee is also tax deductible. Her in early in layers reaping it in a I guess there's like an infirmary that's part of the facility. Yes but a lot of places we'll take you when you're in good health and we devious but it living in a lead and manage you. Through it you have like bailing out of optical memory here centers who suffer from all opposites and but if your health at that point where you can be on respirator yeah it was our first year. It is not probably going to be the place ego you'll transition to it. And I were nursing home without it. So what's fascinating about this this these if it is that the average age that people and through them is 83. And they tend to stay. Haven't ten years and there is some talk that you actually lived longer when you're living really well like that it yoga class. Does it take you meditation classes as having the old playing and. When they're not as loudly we want it eat when you're in your own house it's easy to get lonely you know when you're in a facility like this because they're all. He you know the one my folks are moving into I think is 45 stories high. And there's a lot of well a lot of people around you know so there's always somebody to talk to 07 you have water with always have it'd take class with. You know that was one of the motivating factor for them. I think that having that that the duties terrific and one of the transit seeing as there's a company called related companies. They have been in the lecturing. Housing. At this for a long time probably people probably open because they only equinox here which are very hot and yes. That they're getting into this business too and I gonna do the business model little bit differently they will probably turn entrance fees. But they're gonna put five billion dollars into it they have a housing and their particular city. In places like Austin new York and San Francisco wash and he beat you up on the theory that. It's good for people to be part of communities they wanna be used to be a bit and walk at the front door they have all the access to bookstores cafes restaurants. All within walking distance of where they are. They're looking at it I think differently but you want but I visit it was the Belmont which is that it's pretty articulate but my country and how well these are isolated with you know tennis court. And chemicals some of them are going to be in inner city. When they developed. I got actually be pretty appealing for certain segment of the population you each take a new Yorker right. A New Yorkers are not gonna wanna be sitting out on the AM eastern and Long Island right there they're going to be in Manhattan. Right and there's going to be an opportunity to do that elected also alleged remark it isn't a market the CE XP might it. Best he can repeat at about 700000 people on the right now. That is the enrichment and that it's and think about it this way we have 101000. Baby boomers turning sixty. Every single day. And so out of that number this is certain percentage its sister and have a decent amount of money they're. They have high expectations right now it live right and again I make those expectations only to this year. Yes could be a large market new easy to your point there's this huge wave of seniors and and and a lot of them have money you have to have money to afford the stuff. It's not chew on at the bet that's the part of the spirit didn't really report but it's worth saying is that. Most seniors are not a bit situation. And the fact my talked to one expert instead that we took them to people with her and she's such the housing bailout that. I'd get 50000 dollar state my retirement what can I do and unfortunately. Too many Americans turned back category whereas this is not an audit and effective as to think about what are we going to be for the people who don't have these these. Thank you very much I appreciate the art by I I was fascinated by the timing was quite appropriate thanks for joining us Scott. Scott James frequent contributor to the New York Times and those facilities chuck you know you can be. You know he's describing the really high end luxury realities million million AT and in. But even though I kept. I really nice ones at least when I saw in I've seen a few of them at the entry levels. Al west. The error you know 500000. Maybe 700000 yet and yet still half million bucks to why you know two thirds to three quarters of million dollars since nonrefundable. He's nothing like. When you die it's it's it's not that that money's going back to your Ayers or you know the next generation is I have some there are some where you get your money back once they rent out the unit but then there's been a lot of litigation regarding. His they'll say oh I didn't realize that the they're somewhere. They'll say we'll give you 90% back but we have to rent out your unit again and and they take their sweet time renting it out and interest and lose a lot of your equity what you pay hefty monthly fee. In monthly fee OEM BE 9101000 bucks a month without breaking this one depends on where you are. You know if you are in the midwest it's a lot cheaper different parts the country and obviously you know there's different size units in different levels of care and so forth that you may gaps. Butts you're not talking crazy numbers that's that's what they tend to be you know cases. They coming up where Pete playing trivia. And it's gonna be regarding Dick. Van dyke. So help us understand why apple which I think of as being a phone company may be a watch company. Why they would be hiring dozens of medical doctors. They're making up and not a big bad at this point but they're starting to ramp up efforts on trying to get more involved in health care. And specifically they've got a couple different initiatives that they're trying out. The holy Grail they've been trying to get to was the point where your apple watch. Can monitor your blood sugar they have yet to be able to get there for diabetics and people like to be huge that that's that's where they want to get to there's another platform. I can't remember if it was them or someone else who was testing where. They were trying to have glasses that could use Meehan measure somehow the blood sugar in your eyes to actually you know use a different mechanism. To try to help diabetics but. Yes Apple's playing around with devices that can help give more accurate measurements on a regular basis you know one thing is they're trying to be able to predict when you might have heard that yes the they're working on those kinds of things that broke the other piece that doesn't get Tony and to know what. If I was gonna our heart attack and the two don't give a what if there's anything that surges before hand now you know again I don't know if there's have been studies of the book is. Usually by the time you have a heart attack you're going to the ER at that. The other piece that there's that really interest them in that I think might even be more promising in the long term just from. In ease of use perspective. Is Apple's trying to get way more involved in the medical records picks. And specifically. You know apple that would be nice if for all of us to have all of our medical records are full well and in here's the thing when you talk about your medical record right now do you have a hospitals as a primary care does well late and they they don't know how I was treated you know forty years ago when I lived in can't know in and so there's there's two reasons why I like the idea of individuals having their own resolutely won it's you own it and you decide when and how you wanna share so I like that first and foremost. The second piece is if you have all these other sensors and devices. You can get reading sped into that and say okay over the last three months your blood pressure to increase by 10% the news is that something to be worried about you know those kinds of things. And the issue that you come to that it comes down to on this. Is privacy because privacy is a big concern when every talking that any kind of electronic medical data. Apple's got a better track record than any other tech company out there when it comes to privacy. Tucker wouldn't it be nice if your wife could Wear an apple device right and could say TI I'm gonna go into labor six hours from now. Her. This is Sarah tracker. If you think that TV there that's I think that's what they're old portraits and it's. They are and so it's combination of work on the device front and also that there's still poking around in medical records or watch them on that front it's a lot more quiet. You know in terms of the work they're doing there now but that might that's not as exciting it might even be more important than what they're doing on sensors give except that it could be just because ownership of that data and access to that data is key. It's accesses killer in terms of the heart monitoring. Technology. Business technically the first company been doing this as a wearable. At least that's mass scaled and there's some stuff out there that's there are devices that people can where I believe I had a device on my full work and measure my heart. But it's not wearable Knoll and corrected manually go in right members to send me reminder what today did checked my business is one of the few instances were Apple's really pushing to be the first in this space. Right yep mean Samsung's not doing anything like that at all you know so it's pretty rare from Kabul on May be this is that may be did you know we've all been waiting for the next big product from apple you think this is I think there are on the sometimes that they're doing stuff here that interest in its. As a stock is the suck and win the one issue with saying okay this is gonna be what changes things in the short term there's nothing sexy parts it's I don't know you know so. Well I think there I think you know my baby got the medical records part I would agree with it there but even there I think somebody. Who's you know you get older. And you undersea EE start to appreciate the value of having all of your medical records in one place. But they're not like it there's nothing there from the monetize. It and so there's nothing there in as far as you know this heart monitors thing. A diabetes but they don't have that I'd be like it's it's it's like what I'm saying is there's nothing here right now that's. Boom I need to get this this could turn it around. There on the costs I think we're hater poking around and there's some things that you were me be close but they are working on that di bee sting for I think three or four years they eventually threw the towel and they couldn't get to work. Obviously they gave up buildings that it has to do that bullets no they they they just gave up on they said it it just did not have the consistency they needed speaking of apple they planned to invest one billion dollars building new. Corporate campus in Austin, Texas. This'll lot nicer than that whole thing that Amazon did with you know go over here if the CD's New York news go increase. Over and right into Indy badly rightly so AD the citizens of New Yorkers and we desperately did. Is again Amazon made it clear with the choice they made it wasn't about the money if it was that would go across the river to Jersey City. Are horrible Saturday New York got suckered yes I think that's the right term use. So Apple's gonna put this new campus at Austin they're gonna put billion dollars into it it's initially gonna have about 5000 jobs the Guinness cue that up to 151000. Jobs over time. They've got to two big offices in Austin right now but. This is going to help the really scale up to that if unity and job more UT at school via and he gets there. So August just attack hope to begin with you know it's. It's been host to SXSW. For homes of people and on now 1520 years what's that SXSW. Mountains you know SXSW and you've never heard of SXSW. Now. Where does it feel better to go into effect right there with your brother abs. It's like it's a huge. Convention in festival that's pretty much anything. Related tech but they also a whole bunch of you know the stuff for arts and so forth but how the hell handle that conflict. Because it's massive really they have had in terms of the number of people that go to this thing. And we see if I could say I know the big vague issue. Tex fell the when newseum a pull up the numbers in terms of how many people go to this thing. Theory goes so looks like the total numbers it's north of 220000. People a year ago to lose him. You guys have never heard of south by south what I've heard Anderson. Yet so it's. You know it's the cause of that it's been around it looks like. Since 1987 so about thirty years now it's really the last decade and it's it's grown to be what it is SXSW to give an example. Is where the first running double Twitter was unveiled I was at SXSW. And better sea lift is catching up to Hoover in the United States united people are you with all the time you guys do I others left and it's just a little bit cheaper. Just the little to register and I moved away from Hoover after all the stuff last year with them had nothing to do that for me who's had to do with pricing in a lift to lose like that are 5% less expensive than Hooper. It's Qaeda have it be accurate with it depends on the time but in certain cases can be achieved but a lot of times lift is most atomic thing.
