This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong in chunks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Those of you who lease a car might be in for a little bit sticker shock when that lease expires we'll explain why. We're also going to be talking about. The FD a banning menthol cigarettes not sure quite I quite understand that then. Natural gas looks like it's getting a lot more expensive just this truck Zahn is about to turn on the heat hi everybody at home alone. Very sharp with you here maybe we get nothing that's going right today the Dow's down a 141 points natural gas prices are going up. Menthol cigarettes are going to be banned in current leases are going to be more expensive I mean we I am devoid of any good news. Postage don't know up next year yeah yeah amazed at this now mean who doesn't like menthol and overs losing more money. And neither did bad news goes on and let's start with cars. Tucker actually just leased his first Corey did it and correct. I think at least. No I've I've been lease again I'd outlawed as well I got the hell out of might hit suckers at this least Sox clubhouse I'm out the a lot of people are going to be an impressed with their leases when there carts expire in the great now let's. You know I think adversely lease payments for a 300 bucks. When people lease a car. But the problems. For those of you who leased vehicles habitually. Interest rates have gone up and the trade in values of these leased cars is declining so the monthly payments are grown through the roof. Yen in to understand why that is it's important understand like how you lease is actually priced and pretty much what a dealership does is they say okay what we wanna do is we're gonna sell that they effectively make this calculation here's what this car is priced at today brand new cash at end of your release whether it's in two years three years whatever it is. Here's what we estimate we're gonna be able to sell for your car so it's split that an example you buy. You you lease a car that's got a sticker on 125000. Ford Fiesta okay. And they think it's going to be worth 151003. Years so what you have to do the way that they attackers and say okay. We need to charge you that 101000 dollar difference in over the course of those three years and so if you do the basic math there. So OK get 101000 dollars again divide that by 36. And it gets you where you need to be that B 277 a month except. They don't wanna just make that difference they want a little bit of interest aren't that they have to that was otherwise why would they make this deal fall they're doing is breaking even. So they're gonna say OK we also need to apply you know six or 7% premium on that or something along those lines. And when you do that that 277 turns into 294 plus yep compounding so. Okay that's how you end up with the price of a vehicle when when it comes two weeks the problem is too awful. Number one you're seeing lower prices on used vehicles. Number two he sees higher interest us talk about that is it just use sedans or is used vehicles and it's predominately used today it's just as people are buying so if you lease the Honda's CRV might be better shape than if you at least a Ford Fiesta yet you might be in great shape actually. And it did the thing that a lot of people are seeing is they had previously been leasing and in one of the piece is a sticker shock you're seeing on this is someone might have been leasing a car for 300 a month then but then they say okay. I wanted to you know get in new lease on a new car same car same exact cards to new model. It might be 40424. Safety amongst chuck that some of the price increases have been 50% yes and on from 300. To forfeit. Its eight in in this is something that I don't think is going away soon unless you unless you're one of the people that thinks that the Fed is. Go to change policy and dime in which I happen to think that they're gonna change but not quite quickly say the people are better off buying or leasing. I've always said that if you want the best deal on a car you buy a used car. A number one they catch you pay cash stay away from new cars. In terms of buying or leasing it does depend somewhat on how we used to be okay. If you are a low mileage user who never gonna go over that mileage. Leases can be attractive I'm pretty sure one of the reasons that Tucker got rid of his least was that he was bumping up against the mileage caps and it wanna be restricted name. Am I wrong on that familiar actually right I would have eleven months ago and I was approaching you know I only have 5000 miles left the police so I ordered him yeah I am strong with penalties yet. And so for someone like that I think leases stay away and get Tucker learned his lesson. Kenneth not brand new carpet a brand used car now four years old. It would it would go with the corolla. 2014. Coral and up sport I think my next car might be the one of those are constant. As I'm impressed that so far I heard what a poke her and her story notice I like it down at any rate. We don't really care units are driving. They can do. The big issue is your car lease if you're in a car at least now if you have a monthly payment it's coming due in the next six months twelve months. You should anticipate that that monthly payment is going to increase rather dramatically. Fair statement. I would say so. Big tobacco warns it may fight the FDA over menthol ban against. The FDA is saying they wanna ban menthol cigarettes the libertarian in new is saying. Why. In in in me while and have tugged on so if your driving on the road and say you know I've been able to buy menthol cigarettes per hundred years. Now active by the so in this is a rule that the FDA's talk met there and they're expected to announce this today by the way FDA did just announced. Some significant restrictions on flavored. Now I'm gonna take a look at those are mostly kids use strictly bottom adults too. The jewel it's it's a lot of adults to be the kids are where the concern is because you've seen huge increase in the but I will sign a whole lot of adults used to what was the emphasis crazy. They say when you have warned. Drool Hahn like exit Soka right it has is much nicotine in it as an entire pack of cigarettes. Does anyone ever have like I don't know like I don't I don't think of is is like one that thought but it but is one pot how much you smoke yeah like inaudible records you what you fired up these views I just don't only I don't know anything about. But the the amount of dignity taking days for Matt. Getting back to that the proposed as the potential proposed menthol ban. So mental you're not familiar with that it is a compound occurs naturally in meant to give some that Minty flavor and cigarette companies have added it. To cigarettes for. Coast I think a hundred years just did it change the flavor of them. But the talk coming out of the FDA is that they want to try to ban menthol cigarettes. Simply because they feel that it attracts people smoking that otherwise would not be attracted to. I mean what about I know we bang and a beer right. As in beer Beers at an entry level it is to. It's an entry level. Alcohol average rate. A week or so that the conclusion that the FDA came to investment when he thirteen study is that miracles are harder to quit. And also because of the compounds in their pose a greater health scam so that's that's what they're saying. Do what I think you necessarily ban it no it doesn't normally work that way this all happens it'll go underground and the way that you typically deal something like this is a want you just making a separate tax that hire foreign menthol cigarettes. Let me how my gosh how much is a pack of cigarettes now. So I don't think mocha ice sucks I saw a sign that said like 1060. Back at a premium pack and no way to run. Now many people smoke anymore. They've the American population that smoking I think is under 50% about fourteen and a damp so it's really dig any keeps decline. It does it just about whether it's every year every two years see an additional 1% down and it. Natural gas. Porch natural gas is getting more expenses were all get returned heat on. I did you do it I can I be killing you do it like last month and JD and I got to Wear on out in October oh it is so here's the thing so I have proof factually as I just got my bill from. Ever sourced its site and check these things on a regular basis and I was really curious this year. And so I I got my bill in the big thing that I saw so I actually use this year. It was. Yes I used about 40% more natural gas for the month of the billing period of November than I did last year. And I sit in congress not even if it's just that the period that they all liked it because it bills like idea month. And so messaging what was the case there. Here's the difference. Last year this month averaged 55 degrees on average that's what my statement told me yeah. This year in averaged 49 degrees it was six degrees cooler on average this year. It was going back into an ice age it's ice ages coming. But yes in my usage went up when fortunately by 50% there but my electric usage was down 4% for the month but the here's the thing that's happening news right. And natural gas prices I've seen the slow court while wood 452 per VT for eighty. Including BT we'll keep in mind that's the national average we have prices spiking twenty times that hide during the cold January that we had last year New England in the New England area. So you have Nat gas prices to get it in the New England. You were norte the seventy and eighty dollars per million BTUs because there was no capacity to actually transport where it was neat so what is that due to the home. Well you see rates going up I mean the the way that Ian has naturally surprised you know it's for the following year that's how they make it ups and all the happens. He's ever source goes to regulators and say gee we had eighty dollars per BTU. We need to recover that some. The that the big challenge of course is you know for what the last ten years natural gas is and cheaply he home. In its searching certainly cheaper than oh there's there's three major benefits to Nat gas. At least historically it's been cheaper it may or may not be going forward. It's still is significantly cleaner than oil and it's a lot yeah capital ever you know have to have a delivery so goes to benefits aren't going away. The cost effectiveness of it is something that I think gets brought into question occasionally now having said that this is a short term spike it's not necessarily the start of a long term trend now. What most people have it Tucker how do you he Europe's gas gas in your your gas on a more. Which do you hat natural gas or oil for heating your house now there will be some people who say hey I heat with electricity and would we should probably put that there. I have statistics at least for Massachusetts. Are on this weekday what are your statistics. And this is according to the 2016. Census that was done in masks could be vastly. In favor of natural gas just because of people in the city's 51%. Is Nat gas that it. 3% is. Propane in 50% is electric key. 20% is fuel oil. Point 1% is actually 3000 how homes that heat their homes with coal in believe it or not one point 6% would probably fires are pellet stoves and things like that. And then you've got all their four point 7% and this is a group that I'm really proud of apparently there are 121000 homes with no fuel source for heating. Definitely it's Colombia Colombia customers that. Others into homes on the tape that they just shut him down in the winter. But but yes so it's about 51%. Nat gas than 20% fuel oil that was the biggest ones 15% electric. I'm in 3% propane in that makes up the bulk of usage. Our poll question is which you have natural gas or when he can participate in the poll that visiting financial exchange showed dot com we will share the results later. But are we were similar few text to correct you buried at the what you can like. Olivo did and that does it have any later in 01 pod was equivalent to one cigarette right. But it's much heavier nicotine in yet the use of the point is you can expert ago you don't like smoke at all I mean you can't. Don't recommend. Great guy when we come back Herbie talking about who's gonna be paying for these. Wildfires the California wildfires are you paying for the wildfires. The wildfires in California are causing. Literally billions of dollars in damages not to mention killing him and really with the death told that the latest what I saw I think was fifty to him. In the company that seems to be on the hook for this is PG&E. And 5850. Now when they're up to now. And it's. The state officials in California have determined that electrical equipment owned by PG&E. Including power lines and poles. Was responsible for at least seventeen shock of the 21 major fires in northern California last fall. In eight of those cases be referred to the findings. That referred the findings to prosecutors. Over possible blah violations of state law. Yeah and those were for a last year's fires this time. The estimate according to Citigroup is that PG need could be exposed to an additional fifteen billion dollars in claims. If their found responsible for the campfire. And by the way that fire it's only about 30% contained and I saw estimates last night. They might not have this thing fully contained until the end of November. Out it might take another two to two and a half weeks for them to get this thing under control they need a little help from mother nature they do they're supposedly. Some rain in the forecast I think on Tuesday of next week so. You know it's still four days away at this point for them to get this thing under control but. It's it's a real problem as they tried to deal with the just because I don't know if you've seen any of the videos but. It looks like pretty much the most terrifying situation I mean it's it's a literally fired just everywhere in these in these. Areas right now critics of the utility. Say poor maintenance of power poles and failure to trim vegetation around power lines. Is a major cause fires. And look I I understand people are dying. People are losing their homes are losing their possessions there. The all of their families are being disrupted. But I'm not sure that we're pointing blame in the right direction they they're blaming the big evil utility company. And the fact of the matter is if you read PG knees report annual report for the last twenty years in every quarterly report they will tell you. We need to put more money in to maintenance of the grid and maintenance of the grid includes things like trimming around the powerball. In what you see in a lot of cases and I'm not saying this is the case here is I don't know the specifics but what he's seen a lot of cases. Is that not old news maintenance requests get approved by regulators. For. Actual action and run the problem is the regulators are politicians when they're trying to keep utility prices at a manageable level and the problem is that a manageable level in the short term. Can often end up incurring significantly higher cost in the long term like this when you have fires because of deferred maintenance issues that are addressed but thank you changing your oil right Rudy supposed to change the oil in your car 5101000 miles up something like that we could go. 20030000. Changing but eventually it starts to cause problems in the the issue is yeah you might save thirty bucks you know not change your oil. But if you're engine block cracks because it's got too much you know you know Wear and tear on it right we'll see what you get a new engine that's 4000 dollars that the. The problem I've maintained furry you know as long as we've been behind the stocks I've maintained that the problem is a political. Meaning that whoever is in power does not want to be responsible for 10% increase in the price of your electric right here. You you're not going to be happy Turkey pure electric bill goes from 200 a month to 22300. A month to 110 month. You know I'd be happy but instead what we end up doing now if you're a your electric bill might go from a hundred a month 250. Well exactly just because what what you're going to see is look that you you can't if you're regulator. Yeah I'm one level you don't want to be charging people too much but you also can't let PG need go out of business because then you get people without power that's kind of a bigger problem I just ask the people that are Columbia gas customers so the issue that you run into there is. Look at some point. Either way it's a big chunk of this is probably get. Passed on to ratepayers the did you know for as long as I've studied utility stocks in the big challenge is politics. There's no politician. Wants to be the one responsible for. Passing a beacon in Massachusetts I think it's more heel that has a lot of Jews as a relates to that right. So if she allows. The utility companies in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or the regulator in New Hampshire allows it. Guess what they're lucky get reelected. Now almost need a non political. Person in order to to regulate these utility companies as anybody involved in politics is not gonna do the right thing. Now look at who we see the same stuff with things like Social Security. No idea if it's the same principle of so you don't want to touch something that you know has quote been working even though you see big problems on the horizon. You don't wanna be the person that actually deals with those problems because the cost is often too much to keep you in office when it's all said and done. Stocks are trading markedly lower today you got the Dow down over a 181 points. Price of crude oil is up 55 cents a barrel we'll tell you what is moving the markets. When we return. You never see that with a utility company. Trying to think the last time he saw one like this. I'd been there isn't one to me in my mind that you think you like your National Grid cities like are regulated utility company declining in value by 60%. I I don't I ever so I and I can't remember ever seeing it before not. Not at least over five day here yeah you know it's okay if the company you know starts to go through bad management you like you can see some tidbit. Not five days now and. And I got to tell you hate that I think when. The dust settles on this. You can thank your local politicians for the problems in California and not the utility at the company can only. It's just like up here people. Squawk about all I lost my power for two days the reason you lost your electricity for two days. Is the utility company has not given the budget by the local politicians. To maintain the grid properly on it's it's been like this it it ticks me off for twenty years has been this long and you couple that with the fact that the last couple years have been. Really drive for California yeah in you get a recipe for you or something like this happening now an inept politicians or pointers you know T go after it and they're wrong. Anyway it's change gears and every bodily our poll question is do you have natural gas or oil. 52% of our listeners have natural gas 47%. Have hold heating oil in nearly a number of people that are texting and saying you know I used primarily oil but I also have a wood stove and a pellet stove. If you would still in a pals though. You're probably not used to. Now he is you can burn at least used to be of the bird balances a lot cheaper then the burning model the cost of adults is now. Any let's talk about Netflix their testing. In Malaysia. I'm just trying to think like why you would sign up for that I guess if you like just give people would just watching video on their phones. Are there they're some people I do and again they're probably be younger than me in general. But there are some people who I guess. Don't we were saying look I'd rather save the money and just get a mobile subscription but if you and I pat I guess would be that I just can't see watching it on your phone. It's just yet it's not something that I think would be for me the other thing that question about there's all kinds of ways that you can me your your screen over to a TV. So wonder if you know there's. I wonder if their restrictions built into the software that prevent I weir thanks so we just like as an example so I've got an iPhone and apple TV. I can mere my phone screen right over to my apple TV no problem now. I don't know out of match they're asked to be something built in to prevent me from doing otherwise. Why would not just do this for half the cost. That dated you wouldn't it would make sense but. I would be a big thing also keep my where they're testing this in Malaysia there's an awful lot of people that have mobile phones but might not happen TV. All the other kind of jumped through some of that technology that we've had in the west I. IC a lot of young people and I see a lot of business travelers. Bit they're watching television like you sitting on a plane. And they'll be people watching movies on the error and or iPad to the people people watching movies on your laptop computer yeah. Maybe maybe that's the audience. See a lot of that gap but I I do think this also could be something that might be unique to emerging markets where when you know you go through big parts of Africa is an example. While people of mobile phones like people don't have TVs don't have a whole you know yeah exactly so it's it's a very different situation. Again it's a dismal bull version of Netflix goes through I'm going to be very concerned about other drivers on the road. Point I mean because you're sitting in traffic majority seat I mean you're EC and now I get out of better quality on your mobile phone man I don't like this is going. I'll tell you what the other thing that is. A little concerning if you're Netflix shareholder about this. This has the potential if if if this gets rolled out to a lot of other markets and is the kind of thing that affects margins significantly. So. If you charge people half as much for the same style. Well it's not like the content is half the cost for them nobody the they're probably thinking they pick it up with more subscribers. And if he can't wash and new team because I. I would still prefer to watch it. You know by my wife and I watch programs together I'd rather watch and a big screen. Together in the living room with a our popcorn in cheaper options to me suggest a lack of pricing power. And that's that's something that's worrisome now especially with other streaming companies coming up. I almost wonder if this is DO preemptive shot across the bow in the you know to Disney coming on there streaming things like that so. It's something this the kind of move that makes me a little nervous when I see company saying hey we're gonna give you the same product it half the cost. Yet differently you know platform. But it's still the same product half the cost that doesn't make me feel good about the don't fold they are just testing not fairness to Netflix is just a test in Malaysia. Doesn't mean that'll be boss they wouldn't tell you about it if they didn't want you know about it. Folks if you have money saved for retirement you're ahead of the game because a significant percentage of people near retirement age may have saved anything. Having the money is one thing knowing Wayne and how to take it is another. Okay it's you need a three billion to nice twist. You put on there's they're always used to be the how do you make Patti turned a billion dollars in two million dollars. I know it's how do you end up with a million dollars start with a billion and do well up trading based on you know stock charts yes and that's easy way to turn billion dollars into the million. In this case bitcoin prices and fortunately for bitcoin holders. Not really falling over the last 24 hours of the coin now. Now under 6000 actually at about 5400. On queen bases G Dax exchange at the moment. And yeah these are some of the lowest prices that we've seen in awhile here this fact these member earlier this year was twenty house and we got up to almost 20000. If you go back to. You think that was right around ended December last year where you weren't calling speculator. I was a speculator I knew things were getting ugly and so I got out before I didn't. Get out anywhere near the top but I got out way before the bottom as well as the world's top was nineteen our top was nineteen I think I got out somewhere around generals and what. But what would it. Like as I looked a bit cornyn then I was looking at other crypto currencies as well like bitcoin. The good looks great compared to the other that was the problem in and here's the thing they don't mean anything like eat it even figuring that out finally. It I mean I tried to work people six months ago you know it's an in this is the thing that I've always said with regards these yes the technology is intriguing in that. The idea of having you know a decentralized. Ledger to track things were no one person. Is the authority and weary after rely on other sources and other people to prove something that that has value. But. Just is that has value doesn't mean that this specific application does that's the problem with that point is there's no neat sport and you don't need it. The win needs the only people neither criminals who are using it to conduct criminal activities. You might that always made me a cup with a truck was when I looked or milk is no different for cash and respect you know cash used predominantly by criminals too but that doesn't mean. Tucker and I shouldn't use cash actually you know it's. I just look at it and with cash there's a need because at some point you're gonna have to pay taxes even if you're holding cash you're you're going to have to pay tax bitcoin. You ever need it for anything is no you don't need to pay your taxes and basically you need to buy computer and made that point. It's old wants but wants to really of stability is part pricing power goes zero way to predict the floor for the price of the coin and meet the mean before with anything is theoretically zero I don't see any reason why big points different. I'm not saying it's going there but I'm. Lately it's it's one of those things right now that there's no clear direction in nuclear value for going forward. There seems to be a little bit of a dispute going on in Washington specifically in the White House between Peter Navarro and our old friend Larry Kudlow when we come back we'll talk about that dispute. Well you know credit score better than that you would think if it is simply look at your street and other doubt down. 250 points I've got 45 names in my position staring at them right now. And admittedly I can't believe a but capital are actually up. So there's this weird rotation happening in the markets right now let me just again look at it might you know my game report. Core though he met the nerve few some of those that they Alibaba. Thank videos Eric BankAmerica. EOG apple I mean. You know these names are all up today so. My point is if you just look at the headline index numbers are gonna get freaked out but you know there's some value out there there really is. At a more thing I noticed yesterday that I found a little bit interesting is it if we look at you know that this sell off over the last month. It's been characterized by really anything risky getting killed any particular that the stronger dollar has really decimated. A lot of companies but also a lot of emerging economies one thing that struck me yesterday. Emerging markets were up when just about everything else was down what what do you make it. Thank you okay so here's the deal you can only take. After prices down so far before guys like me are gonna start saying wait a minute. Has gone out too much. You know there's value here right and so that's what I well let me just finish answering your question them in the operate under. What director emerging market yet you're absolutely right he's been is that possible I mean at some cases down. You know 253040%. Lead to take an entire country. Market cap the market value down by. When he 30%. I mean that. You know that's like you know 2008 all over again and if you think the world of imploding fine but guess what I do about it. I'm quite bullish on the economy I think they actually once we get through this. Sort of awkward period right now where everyone is stressing out thinking oh gosh it though it over again though not we're gonna be just. I'm also a believer that there is the real value action long Japan right. With a couple of name I've been buying China like I mentioned Alibaba. You know there's a great example on buying Ali Bob on long wait though these these companies which is like its border China these companies are growing thirty to 35% the they're treating it went. Time. And make it twenty times but yet the V if you know like that in an app okay fine. But yes that he's not growing at those kind of rate that my point is your take these names four people. Adamant that one of the big concerns that we've seen the outs. The sell off as being in a higher rates and and we've seen in having a meaningful impact on housing and autos and on various parts the content the country. One thing that I find interesting and in this is in the last week now if we take a look at futures for Pia the Fed Funds rate. A week ago there's only a 32% chance that you had zero or one hikes next year by the Fed. We're now up to a 54%. Chance of zero or one hikes next year. By the Fed what do you make tennis. So they chair pal. And you could argue. You know he's he's given a little bit you know under the heat from trying not to look like he does. He's trying to it's not easy when you know someone that Pennsylvania Avenue keep. Thing you know. Let rating great but he needs to stop but you know what I think he is he finally admitting chairman Powell and I'm glad to see it. Is that. You can't necessarily do two things at once an athlete but that he's the number one been raising rates. Which is eating what I understand ray okay but he spent the borrowing costs go up but number two he shrinking the size of the now you yet that little harder to understand that despite the state as you do that. Take a liquidity out of the systematic kind of pleases the bank maybe a little bit if the market. But what happens is that people you know they are jump to conclusions in the old gas leaked up at that. So I think he's he's realizing that you know maybe he needs the kind of is Lockett back. Adam just have about thirty seconds left right now anything in particular that you're looking at as particularly oversold right now. Now. There are a handful of names that'd be writing up. This weekend. And ultimately one of them actually and in. Really this is from what the purpose but a player right now of an XC. Advocate doctor if you remember this was accompanied it was gonna get I Qualcomm exit yet. Approval from Chinese regulators so Qualcomm walked. And it he went from 130 bucks down do like seventy. Okay it's trading really cheap right now it's trading at like nine times earnings that the 35% discount all the others semiconductors and these guys are number one in auto related that these. And they also got behind apple pay that once we get an exit via I'm and a published several other on Sunday morning there's some real values that your call. Rate the air at bull's eye brief dot com investors are nervous made the sentiment for the last month or so has turned markedly negative. What the big thing is there's no clear signal for anyone right now is to win to get back in near there's there's no clear signal that people are getting saying. Oh gee here's a bullish indicator that things are actually turning around and there hasn't been that signal that things are turning what it could be okay. Is what you're seeing in the Fed Funds rate move and remember. Until recently pretty much several was saying three or four hikes up. The badgers now the futures and our guiding either one or zero hi. The markets are selling off and I was just noticing Wal-Mart shares down. Gosh 2.2 percent. Thought they had a pretty good quarter but evidently the market disagrees it's only. Know the market disagrees with you the problem is even companies that have decent quarters are getting punished right now. You have to beat and beat big in order to do well in this market right now just because. Here's what I think is happening again I think I don't know. There's enough uncertainty out there that if companies just guiding in line even slightly better than traders are pricing that in with censored in saying. Yeah you're saying this but I'm a little nervous about this so. I don't know I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt because everybody beats now what's the B 80% like 80% are still listed with the area where you start a season issues is on revenue. Or about 60% of companies are beaten on revenue rate and lot of that's due to the dollar. You gotta realize and strong dollar world this year that you can't that's wal mart's problems and it's wal marts never one else's problem. You know Wal-Mart said look the stronger dollar is impacting our international earnings it's now hurting margins a little bit here and there. And that's something that they just have to deal with the 'cause I think the strong dollar is going to go away. And it hasn't yet. You know it's it's it's one of those things it doesn't matter until does right now it does eventually won't again but. You know I think you're still probably. You you never know when it's go and when that's going to shift yes the problems currencies and there's a lot of investors who don't trade currencies as they say it's 21 predictable. And you have a king dollar guy in the White House whom are referring to talk about Larry Kudlow who's been going toe to toe. With Peter Navarro. Yesterday chuck and are sitting in a meeting we've got a text message. And it appears as if Larry Kudlow is taking the upper hand over Peter Navarro. Yet that's what it sounds like. That's what it seems like I. I take anything like this with a grain of salt not saying that Larry has necessarily taken the lead in terms of it could who has the inside track on these negotiations. Eight neither one of them are necessarily negotiating this directly now located at some point yes they're both appealing to the president. One at some point you have to get Robert light Kaiser and he's the one who's gonna mean make the final deal when it's all said and done. Now but the big thing is Navarro last week last Friday said in this is a quote from him said that the potential deal with China would be on president trumps terms not Wall Street's terms. And Larry was. Pretty critical that on Tuesday while that was it was an unauthorized statement today well and it does I mean you've not heard a peep from Navarre absence. You know not not ones so it does suggest. That I think Larry is ahead of him Navarro on this. Issue well here's here's how I perceived problem you correct me if I'm wrong but I I look at Kudlow. News he's a free trade guy yelled back yeah. And he's probably whisper and in the presidency are saying hey we need to get something done with China and we need to get something done with Europe. And then you've got Navarro at the front of the boat drill holes and it right in and he's trying to tell the president the president a we have to continue this trade war. Meanwhile the stock markets in Selma. In and that you eat the mid term election results. You can. Paint those anyway you want they were disappointing. The Republican Party when you look at a loss of seats in the house what do they lose 3540 seas Caribbean as the mid thirty's it's not a good number. You know they they did well in the senate. But you know when you look at. You know I and another election in less than two years and the president has to say hey I need to do something on trading get this economy cup and again. I don't think you get something done here I've I've been saying this viewer the wonders thought that we are gonna have side by the election I did I am telling you that I think the issues that are present here. Are way bigger than what they can solve and it's it's the 'cause it's not about jobs when I know everyone wants to make it oh it's you know we're just trying to bring jobs back look that's great you wanna bring jobs back. Chinese Government to give you that flops they'll give you had a heart beat. You want to secure. A little bit more independence for American companies operating in China great channel give to Verity told me they were gonna do that. What China will not budge on intellectual property. And they won't budge on wanting to get away from the dollar into into those are two. The Chinese Government. Has an existential problem being tied to the dollar the US government has an extension problem for needing China the state tied to an intent once that we breaks. You're going to see a dramatic shift in where the world goes the dollar is not going to stop being used in significant numbers of 60% of the world's reserve currency now are. It might go down to fifty or 45. But that is begin practiced with value. You know I'd about the war and wondered about when you're 30% cheaper dollar. We EB you don't think the Chinese back off on the intellectual property theft either why would that. They don't need to. They've they've been it's just wrong it's it just saying it's not wrong and it's been wrong since they've been doing its thievery if it's just it's no different. And somebody walked in in your house and stealing your food. I'm telling you anything different all I'm saying is. They've been doing it to this point even though it's been wrong there's nothing today or Jason generally off your kids. Plea now that's that's the media. Here's what I'll tell you about how bad things have gotten in China by the way due to this trade war that's going on. The Chinese equivalent of the SEC the Securities and Exchange Commission issued guidance to Chinese companies with in the last week. Recommending that in order to maintain their stock prices they issued debt in order to buy back stock. So that's how bad things have gotten in China so it's not pretty over there but. China's kind of made a habit of saying look we'll take short term pain in order come out on the other side and they don't worry about elections that they don't have to G has. As he's now been approved he has power for life if he wants it skis emperor. Yes you can do what ever he wants. So I don't think about the cause of these factors I don't think that you're getting a resolution on this and I am not trying to be Debbie downer of Noah feel like that's all I am these days but. Just think you get in there but it's hard to understand the Chinese perspective unity can pick up Canadian paper read. You can pick up the British newspaper and read you pick up the Financial Times again and European perspective. Hard pick up Chinese newspaper. Yep I'm all run by the government. Well you can get a perspective of what the Chinese Government wants to say yeah you can't really get a perspective of what the Chinese citizenry is thinking right. They that that's I'm getting just eat you really don't know what's going on now. You know we are talking about GE yesterday and I hate to bring it up as I know many view on the stock. They had a triple A credit rating as recently as 2015 I thought it did ten years only three. Three year with three they were AAA. And now they're they're teetering a big they are trading like good job. They are and and you know what's interesting seat go stocks down again not much but is down to. I was chat with a good buddy of mine so I'm not gonna take credit for this but give this is someone who you know was a floor trader on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange back in the eighties. And I was talking impressive you know what kind of got them to this point in terms of being this bad. And he was about as critical as he can be of Jeff and saying. Pretty much Jack Welch know it it was so welts left you know with the mess but he said the Immelt kind of put the final nails in the coffin here in that. One of the big things was in milk did not want to submit GE capital to the additional regulation after the financial crisis. So we pretty much sold GE capital at the bottom just snorted get away from those regulations. He then went. And bought Baker Hughes at the top of the energy market is it looked it was the two biggest deals that he made. Any need each one at the exact wrongly the health care deal to them. But he said those two in particular kind of got you to this point because otherwise you'll get out financials rallied since a bottom right hey you missed out on all that and then you bought in energy company topped out. Not good. The problem that GE has now they've got north of a 110 billion dollars in debt and nobody wants the bodies being valued pretty close to junk levels. And here's the other thing is that junk debt right now if you look at how it is being valued. This spread between junk bonds and higher credit quality investment grade okay meaning the difference in yield. Is now three point 92% according to Bloomberg the highest we've seen. In over a year now and and so this suggests that people don't have a whole lot of confidence in lower greeted companies right now as of GE gets downgraded. It makes their borrowing more expensive as well that's another issue forth right. Coming up or be talking about Hoover the posted slower sales gains but we're learning more about their Robert Eads program is used very spent enough as one of the competitors I use. Break here on the financial exchange radio network. The headline reads over technologies is seen slower sales growth ahead of its planned initial public offering next year. But then I dig into it chuck and I read. Oh you know their third quarter revenue was up 38%. From a year earlier to two point 95. Billion dollars that's two point in in one quarter they do two point 95 billion dollars. It was a little less then the second quarter year over year jump of 63%. They did lose a billion deal. Well here's the thing so what is it it's a significant slowing you know growth slowed from 63% down to 38%. That's significant number and the question that I think you have to look at with Hoover. Is that slowing. Kind of reestablishing a bottom at 38% receive GOK we can grow with thirty or 40% a year for the next year to three years. Or is it pay. We're gonna continue Sloan because we've kind of tapped out as much growth as we can happen our core products and other ones aren't big enough to really deal with the boat and off. I don't know the answer is I'm not looking at I don't have you know that the exact specific breakdown on all this. But if you're trying to get a valuation of 120 billion dollars which is what all the investment banks want that's that's what they're floating because say. Even if they miss and get ninety's it's still more than the seventy it was worth last year and that's why they floated that 120 number gone. They're not getting 120. That will be don't accept it if you're doing three billion dollars a quarter plunged twelve billion dollars Larry thrown. Herbal. Let's say throw movers got to deal with William Hill to exclusively license. William technology in their cars. Okay. That cuts out the biggest expense they have to have that. Well we know we in this is the problem to me it's really tough to value. Hoover because remember they had that settlement would Carolina was stealing ya intellectual property yet blame all the there's some settlement there where we've all got more interest in who we don't know what how much they got but why would wane no one to. Just use Hoover's the only way to get their cars. Well what's in it for them for way able. The good database against the the active clients and you think about how many why do they need it how many people use Lugar every day telling people he's Google every day and you know clearly he's naked DEQ do you think they could circumvent Hoover not need the book cup. He's that already have huge user base they don't need to buy database is now you know a company eased by database Disney's divide data means they don't have it like they needed Netflix subscriber right they need something like that they don't have an online presence right now they get a whole bunch people who get Disney's through. You know TV in her movies but they don't have direct access they don't have a database to. I will give Google Google's got the biggest database on the planet it. They know they know what I'm thinking before I think if they know what I have for breakfast a week from now let your email you knowing that they know this stuff so. I look at what movers doing and I think that they're probably gonna get to profitability at some point to him but it's it's a half hopefully I can just. It's not that I don't like the company I using all the time blacks they don't use you for all the time anymore just as I didn't like the last CEO so I stopped using and went over a lift but. I you know lift this cheaper. It is it. So I just look at them and I say. Yeah they've gotten to this point I just I don't know what's next. You know. Over eats me in this these guys don't use of the day you had two billion dollars of revenue in the quarter. Which is a bigger number than I was expecting and that's a really profitable business that's more profitable than hauling people. It is well well they get. It paid by the the the yet you pay them rated when you order Newbury yup you're paying feet. But the restaurants paying about big chunk of the yeah they'd that the gross bookings there were two point one billion it doesn't mean that Hoover made two point one billionaire that was the gross bookings it doesn't specify how much of that went over. I'm imagining somewhere in the ballpark of a third to 40% is probably going outweigh the drivers prefer looper reits over driving people around. It's more profitable for them to write they make more him or not deal with the drunks and they you know you get food new car but that's it. Yes but I'd be curious to see what the actual revenue is not just a gross bookings there. But the fact in that business is growing quickly so that this is a bright spot they can point to where they say look. This business is more than doubling year over year and then OK now you got some that it that interest me a little bit. But it's the core business I just don't know how much more. Berkshire happily taken four billion dollar stake in JPMorgan he has loaded up on banks yet they wells Fargo Bank of America now JP more. Yet they they bought a significant amount of JPMorgan stock somewhere in the ballpark of seventeen nearly nine million shares I think one's. And so they've yet to be a significant state here. And what's really interesting in terms of the timing of this from from my perspective when I look at. You know why there'd be the question I always ask Tennessee Berkshire do some things okay why they doing this now you know what's. What what is the reason for this. To be happening to Dayton. And so the only thing that I can come to is this was a stock that was trading almost a 120 bucks a share back in the beginning of mid September. It went down as low as one of three so. I know Buffett likes financials. He's getting a fifteen to 17% discount on where wise what does he know that we make Aziz did the loading up on finances it's tempting to fall. It is but here's the other thing that come back to. This is not a huge deal for its its substantial been put four billion dollars not him out with his elephant. This right now sitting on a hundred billion yet you know this is him saying. I like that I'll buy some more of it but. Four billion dollars for Buffett is not hate this is something that I'm betting form. You know that the deals that he wants to bet the farm on those are a lot bigger. Or he has smaller stakes the gore gets great terms like the Bank of America preferred that he did well that's ours cannot ask whose do you think this was a private investment and public equity. It was he had gone to JPMorgan or would he bought these on the open market. Don't know that unit they don't know it there's a lot more that that goes on they're called pipe straight yeah and a you eat. I don't know if today we he wasn't disclosed. No I I I don't know it's not it's certainly could be possible. But I I don't know law also making an investment in oracle boosting their share 41 million shares of pork in this one is something its interest remember buffeted never bought technology stock before IBM about five years ago where they and he bought apple one of them worked out well from the other not so much. Oracle's the company. That really was kind of in no man's land for about three years from mere 2013 to 2016 kinda stuck in neutral. This year stock's been on it here one of the best performing stocks out there it's got 35 bucks share up to fifty. Even with the recent pullback in markets it really hasn't budged in the last months though. You know this is one where I think he's looking at saying. And will need to take another shot at a tech company and not in one that for a few years in the dog house but now start to show signs of life. Markets recovering a little bit it's still down the Dow is down a 131 points the S&P is down five points. No folks it's chuck and Mike from the financial exchange and we're talking about required minimum distributions for getting towards the end of the year now. In a few over age seventy and a half. And you have IRAs are 401 k's are for a three B is yet have to take out those required distributions before the end of the year. Otherwise you face penalties Mike how steeped in the penalties be on our d.s that are taken out. They can be very severe so. Let's say your first year required distribution is. 5000 dollars and you've failed to take that money out you can be penalized. Up to one half. Of what you're supposed to take out but didn't so let's say you didn't take any of your acquired distribution you can be faced an IRS penalty in that case. Of 2500 dollars so it is a significant amount in in terms of you know that penalty it's not just that you face on that one year if you miss 2345. Years whose penalty numbers to add up to significant amounts of money absolutely deserve this is something that you cannot ignore folks and if you find yourself where you find a loved one in the case where they. Age didn't know about it largest beef failed to take action don't ignore address it. You know identify what the issue is how much you might oh. Year in a row as letter mail drops. Yeah and that the volume drop is one thing the big reason why continues to be in the red is just because it continues. To actually do the right thing and actually fund its pension and health care programs to the level that it they should be funded so it's actually a a good thing that you're seeing there. But the problem. Is just that you are seeing continued declines in the amount of mail. That is being sent and so by the way buck what is next year's starting January 27 the price of a first class stamp goes from fifty cents to 5510%. Bump and. And that's what I wanted to talk about because. Every year the number of people using first class mail declines. Right yeah. Because more barbarous it you start saying well honey YE sending a physical check right let Larry Page and electronically yup because it's cheaper. But now like there's even more of an incentive. To use a less first class mail I don't think the cost is the drivers go no I really don't like I've thought about this from a couple perspectives lake so let's say they took the cost fifty cents down to 45 you know you start write letters again. No but it might stop you from it might be less likely to change your behavior that's the only. And I don't know I just look at it 10% increase. And and I think though I can tell you there will be CFOs around the country saying hey. Let's take a look at all of our perverse cost mail and is there any way we can cut back there will be households where they say you know what. I used to send my utility bill in and played DirecTV bill in with a physical check up and do. I've had a patent. An and an eagle electronic. You don't thinks it I think it might be around the margins but I think so here's the thing so let's say that 5% of people say that. The stock and know 5% more revenues. The well the Peters made the first that. First class mail volume fell by three point 6% last year sued the real test will be how much does it fall when you look at the Afghan cup. Yeah it in and really the big thing so obviously you know first class mail is it's a big chunk of what they do. But the post office is trying to ramp up for packaged to look like that's where they see the growth happening you say. We're not going to be in the business of just delivering letters don't its tape the packages are big piece here. You know what they need to look for no fault if there's a way to make more money off of their Amazon contract unity they got to be thinking about that. Sane in the president's breathing down their neck. It must be thinking do we re negotiate that deal and say hey amazonian patent Mormon it's not a deal specifically with Amazon play games on pays the same rate everyone else does. I thought they had some deal on Sundays where they're using postal workers to deliver just exclusively Amazon packet I thought you were talking about blink the actual package costs bill as those Iraq those the same things that everyone else pay yeah they do have a deal I don't know if it's I don't think it's a sweetheart deal or anything like that I think they're paying PO regular. Post office wages and stuff like that those people so. An estimated. 101400. Americans will turn 65. Years old each day in 2019 I used to tell people whose 101000 a day over 101400. In this group represents the ninth year of nineteen years. A baby boomers turning age 65. An estimated 111500. Americans will turn 65. Years old each day. In the year 20/20 nine that's the peak which keep getting older home. Well we are getting older in the question comes in like how do you provide for its people. Unity because the workforce is getting smaller and the number of people hang around or people rightly yes. Our where we're growing rapidly. What's what's really interesting actually is if you take a look at the the median age in the United States over the last. Caught forty years almost fifty years now so if you go back to. And see where is this year's is going back to Kerio yep you go back to 1970. We had the median age in 1970 was. Thirty 32. Okay today McCain is actually as of this projected in two point 18 minutes up to 42. In 1972 was what thirty to 32 and do what is in two years are really a year and a half it's going to be 42 it was 41 in 2010. So. We continue to see this aging and that's projected to continue to increase up to 44 by 24 and so. We're continuing to get older. And this is a problem that we don't really know how to deal now you know we we don't really have an answer for this one though the Richard. So kind of a problem here folks if you are at or near retirement age legacy planning. Is something that you're gonna want to be mindful of it goes without saying. We obviously want to leave our children in great shape if we can. But gifting or assets be all hold her even a vacation property. Is offering remote workers 101000 dollars to move there that's Paulson Oklahoma City is joining the ranks of other locations in the United States. Including Vermont. And main advertising incentives. To workers for relocate but I have never seen these two so they say they give you ever seen any of these ads you relocate here are also. While lower for Maine or Vermont. Otherwise I see for Maine all the time are the ones that allow you to go. Two university remain the same costs your state yeah state tuition yeah I've seen those and Tobago were born in Rhode Island and so I've seen those but I haven't seen these that the Tulsa one. That the catch is you have to stay there for four years to get the full cash award grade they give you 2500 bucks up front yeah towards relocation expenses 500 bucks a month stipend which is pretty good and then 15100 bucks at the end twelve months. Not bad that you're into also he has ever I've never been to talks so I'm not gonna speak disparagingly. Of Tulsa. Not real high in my list it's a big refining. Yeah I mean it's it's in pretty much the middle of Oklahoma and you know it it's it's about coast you can get to the middle without being in Oklahoma City and I don't really know much pub out it. Eager for good football around and wonder why they would do that. Like what's the the benefit they tax revenue. They might have employers that you know have jobs that need to be filled out I don't necessarily as your swing is so remote workers we saw some that's a morally this from a couple of towns and Ohio that were offering similar incentives and to get people to move there as well in in the issue in the Ohio towns. Why is that there there were jobs that need to be filled in the could fill. PG unique there in trouble there the utility companies that. Is if sue it's assumed at this point that they're responsible for the fires but this is this might be the ugly as chart that I've seen. Even years down you know it's that this is a stock that was 56 dollars a share peace he is the symbol pretty recently is now 1957. Is down 2.3 percent today after being down 28% yesterday at 30% the day before. I you know it's as a utility is utility stock this doesn't happen now this this is a stock that in five days has lost 60% of its ballot. When I think people don't understand it using it making it go out of business or public utility regulating what they can't go out of business but they can certainly have things made variant. Fourth. But I do their their punishing I I think if they the the markets punishing them. And obviously people know things I don't know but I'm looking at the story behind this saying this is. The company went to regulators and said we need more money to maintain our system in the regulator said no we won't we won't have that money. The people who own the stock can't get out of it fast enough now. There they're element there are. When we come back or be talking about the best of the largest American airports. So the Wall Street Journal just ranked the airports around the country and we've got a list of the top twenty. And the criteria that they used was reliability. Value. And convenience those are the three yet that may be you know that travelers care about I sure do. Rid of those three I would say reliability is mine. Top priority right get out of time making your connection. Yeah I think so what's interesting is the weight that they gave some of these like for convenience as an example convened to went through the footnotes. They measured Wi-Fi speeds restaurant ratings maximum walking distance is number of nonstop destinations reader satisfaction. But convenience to me is also how convenience to get to the right you know in and that's not including or leave the airport. Yeah and our our airport leads a little bit to be desired quality even select the top one in the country okay it was Denver which came in itself convenience score of 77. Never followed through Denver to our outside the city like it takes away it's not the most convenient to get to actually it's it's easy to get their 'cause there's nothing else around it. But it's kind of height so you know look at that and say OK like I guess it's convenient once you they are none it's kind of a long hold actually get to that. Point they're good airports in now give the top ten team Denver's ranked number one in the country. Followed by Orlando. Phoenix. Atlanta. Dallas Fort Worth Las Vegas, Nevada Seattle Tacoma. Charlotte, North Carolina Los Angeles LA acts in Boston at number ten I was shocked to see. That Miami was ranked as number thirteen. I thought they would have been higher. The big things that apparently hurt Miami reliability. Was a big issue I guess and convenience that convenient to ranking. Which I don't know. What the issue is there from the convenience perspective is you know if you talk about some of these things nonstop destinations and get just about anywhere from there. The idea when he restaurants I don't know about Wi-Fi speeds but I don't know that just doesn't seem like you staff quite that important there. The worst out of the top twenty your worst out of the twenty biggest airports all through the New York City airports LaGuardia JFK and Newark coming in at the bottom three. With pretty much the only positive being that somehow LaGuardia has good value. Well the everything else was below Africa and all of these. You know I I used to fly at a New York back in the eighties and LaGuardia. Was dull in the eighties and apparently it's got worse they've put no money to gore will JFK they're trying to spend I think it's like. Four billion dollars to update and redo and I've actually flown I think it's through JFK which is where is JFK the when the jetBlue goes through yes it is. I've or a big problem here you have fought through the JFK terminal. Apt to at the jetBlue terminal at JFK. And that's pretty good at this point but. I've really seen the rest of it and it's just a pricey Boston rates Ohio. He can't get anywhere from yeah air innings a connection. This not so much the case anymore you know it seems. You're seeing more and more international flights picking up now and domestically compared to New York think about like when you look when you compare anything to New York it's not going to be close you've got Newark and JFK are international destinations. You pick the number of cities you can get to. The mind oh exit but you're comparing again this is you know New Yorkers. The biggest city internally it's the biggest financial center in the world up going to be able to get and if you compare anything in New York it'll. Lockheed Marten landed a 23 billion dollar pentagon contract with them. Yeah not really surprising here this is for 255. F 35 combat jets. And this is really that that just the next iteration of these F 35 jets. They're going to be delivering a 106 combat jets for US military use and then the remaining planes. For nonmilitary use in foreign military customers this contract is gonna take him through march of 20/20 three so it's about a four year contracts are building about sixty these planes each year and the F 35 program. Notable because they're been significant issues and cost overruns to begin with but it seems like the start to hit their stride as far as the production of these planes. And starting to kind of get on track as far as being able you know to a produced them in the numbers they need to make the reliable and what kind of jet as it fighter the F 35 it's. It's actually fascinating I've been reading up on it a little bit more in the last. Last few months just because you know it's it's been really really heavily criticized by just about every one. And the opinion and I'm starting to come around to. Is that. It doesn't necessarily do what previous generations do as far as it's just overall flying ability and things like that but the technology that's in it is far as. Radar jamming abilities things signal all the stuff that you know is really important in today's world as well as being able to coordinate firepower from different. Different you know sources. Apparently is just off the charts and so it's it's not it's not a dog fighting it's not built to do. Nobody does indicate. You know continued move towards shooting wars as opposed to cyber wars. Aid the excel in what way let it just seems like we spent so much money as a global society on. Military. Equipment. I don't know oh is that the future of of combat you know lead it seems now you always have to have that. Yeah it's shooting a thing about I just think about how much money we waste. Not saying it's you know not saying it's of that I would DO glove to spend money on but it's something that you have to how much. I think that's up for debate but you know it again it's is not going away any time soon Dow's only down 42 points now canosa a little bit admit they rally going on. And some p.s actually in positive territory it's up three points. NASDAQ is up 35 points and the price of oil is up 82 cents a barrel gold is up four dollars an ounce. Things are turning around middle of the day and for no apparent reason and I think. You know sucked into an analyst yesterday and she told we should all that somebody stocks and one of mine. And aren't enough cash what all these stocks that are hitting her price targets that she ones to pick off. And not enough cash may be other investors are starting to see the same thing you know you've had a pretty good pullback in earnings have been strong right he had good earnings growth. Things that are made maybe the market had it wrong for the last month and maybe November is gonna turn out also we have a Santa Claus rally before the tiger tees. Ho ho ho ho ho ho. Will be back tomorrow with another edition of the financial exchanged very sharp and Tucker signing off work today.
