This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Gerry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The economic and financial information. That we delivering you receive. On a daily basis is conflicting. We get good news in terms of wage growth we great news in terms of unemployment. And housing starts to slow down. You look at the stock market the way the market's reaction has been during the last well thirty days October an ugly. What does the future hold we don't know for certain but we can tell you what has happened. And I'm joined today by John Moody and it's not been pretty. October's been nasty month you know the history of October's actually it's a pretty good month surprising the most people how ever. What we've had. Catastrophic months they tend to be October's. So the bad news is and it ain't over yet it's not over yet and we just had a brutally bad month if there's any silver lining here though is that some stocks are actually doing. Pretty well and I look you know Wal-Mart is way up this month Procter & Gamble is way up this month. Philip Morse is way up this month. It's not just things that are going down you're looking based Netflix Amazon. Yet they're down. Crushed. Economically sensitive stocks yet that's raising a lot of questions what we have here is. Two issues that are really being resolved one is that the tech bubble which we also happening that's. That's just nature market. Share I mean. When the music stops I've talked about this before I get actually gave you kudos yesterday said to our audience. Six months ago on when he said he couldn't put it. On in this. Easy you you admire the company do business with the company. You remember just like yesterday you're saying it's impossible to put it and son that kept going up that's what happens in ovals books yeah. You know bubbles goal in extremes in both directions so when stocks are running up they get they tend to get overbought. When the sell off to John the ten oversell. In what happens Barry is when the music stops that's when valuations matter it's what stocked with what's the meat on the bone and the reason why there's only 5% of the investors in the country who were value investors. Is because of not unusual result. If you bought stock goes nowhere for four years doubles in the fifth year given an annual average return of 15%. Not many people have the stomach to do that but ultimately it. It pays off in times like this is one of the stocks I'd like they are the places people gravitate to when they're very worried. And that's why Wal-Mart is had a dramatic move on now and it is a super safety stock that is not dependent on congress did not trigger refuted I I I think Johnny B you look at Wal-Mart. And I think finally in the CEO that maybe two or three years ago took his head in the sand and young CEO guys in his thirties. And he said hey we get into the on line business world for crying now out patient in years ago I think all that's happened John B I I do you're. You you try I think they're both true you that you make the point. That all of the economy's gonna slow down and so people are gonna shop Wal-Mart right I disagree I think. The people shop at Wal-Mart are now going to be more likely to afford to shop at Macy's because there wages are going. You'd have to look there's a major shift going on in America. Where that'll last. Thirty years the last forty years the blue collar worker and be sick unskilled labor has been under appreciated and underpaid. Now you try to get somebody come to your house and do some plumbing and try to get somebody a house to do roof try to get into an addition Kanye. But anyway you better learn how to do it yourself because you can't hire people I agree 100%. With what you're saying and there's two issues with Wal-Mart one is. Right it's like people shop there because the report that but that does happen in any shop there because it's convenient means shop there because it's. Cut rate prices and they're buying these the brain. So you know they have the advantage in the luxury of having a core business which is the largest retail operations in the country. In on top of that absolutely they're doing what you're saying. Which is the doing all the right things to expand that business to protect that business and become a presence on line but the same time. It utes defensive stocks like Philip mores of that are doing very very well you have other defensive stocks. That are doing very well so there's a little bit of a flight to safety here a little bit of a natural correction. But at the end of the day there's a lot of concern to your point. About the impact of jerks. And in what that's going to mean the bottom line and you know we you have viewed United Technologies which of course is that. He has a strong New England presence they come out and say that. It's gonna have a dramatic impact on their costs and it's gonna hurt the profitability in the the statistic that really concerns me the most Berry. In terms of the fundamental things that matter here not just the rotation from high priced hawks that's just nature. What concerns me fundamentally as Willie courtesy NBC store service. It's a 13 of the companies that they talked to looking at reducing research and development. Because of the money drain of extra costs from the terror camp. So here's it seems to defeat the purpose of giving them tax breaks. A lot of break is now going. To pay for higher input costs C and that's your criticism of the terrorists and Vicki you have to recognize them on it we're unique trait. And it's not eat in the keyword there is not trade war and you know you've got an opponent in Chinese who. Has no integrity no more no no respect for intellectual property. And they simply they take whatever is not tied down. And that's that's the way they act culturally that is the weighed eight field towards American pro NC you know we're gonna get into during the course Joba. Some of the actions on the part of the Chinese were learning. Have been going on for ten and twenty years. This is our response to visit and and what else DD care shooting. And again. To your point I don't disagree. He may very well be the right thing to do. But as investors we have to kind of step back in try not to get too emotional about this okay what this is justified or not what does it mean. It means higher report cost it means inflation it means United Technologies will earn less money. You means Boeing will earn less money so take on the papers say. You know going and Wal-Mart may actually make some sense compared to buying companies that are capital intensive. And labor intensive. But what I think what a lot of people listening to John in saint hate you know the markets down I'm lost but that money in the last thirty days how to react to what point do. It's at a table makes even more complicated the fact that I think that the forty year on bull market ended 28 months ago via. You know you when I thwart his tenure treasury today 32223. Exactly so you know. Our whole investment like merry we've always been supported. By knowing if we had 30% bonds that was protecting its that was giving necessary 6%. That was helping protect everything is easy. Now if you're like hedging Europe over priced technology stocks will long bonds. That's like protecting your investment kerosene with investing in matches now. I mean you're you're you're in the ports are so the answer is cash is not them more attractive in the last ten years. It's okay that cashed in by the way I would ever you're getting a cash and keep going. So that's in short term on safe bonds via I think dividend stocks outpaced an eye open mic on the crazy. I put most of my cash to work in the last three weeks and because IC great opportunity in sync dividend stocks one after you give us a couple examples not that we think you should buy these stocks today but do they. Things types of companies. I've been I've been buying phones and I'll give you an example I don't mean to endorses but fidelity has high. Dividend income fund that is 100 Purcell stocks all stocks. All dividend payers it's an ATF for mutiny Tia and you apple was a large holdings to others it's not like you're you're ignoring your purse supplied there's growth and there's financial WV 4%. Now. You know so you know I'll I'll buy that and I'll put on an 800000 into something like that. In space and needed to QG take the dividend factory after reinvest correct you take it demanding cash and they're gonna send you a thousand bucks at recorder. Again. And again looks to have six months on much but an honor to go to eighty east and for exactly. And remember this to folks what dividends these companies on average pay. Have higher rates of 50%. That means they're making twice as much money as they need to afford the dividend and companies are very reluctant to cut dividends. Despite will be coming later with you I don't let it got David and played Tug on the ballot but generally most years they go up in general we can knock it cuts though. IICO two in the I think if the market as she worked right now as we speak the market is a fourteen point eight times earnings that is not a lot of Abbott to your point earlier. If these terrorist group earnings that would you know how reliable is that. But the market has its up today folks. Under 497 it's it's a weird day he deposit futures are positive then. Dave market opened up negative now futures now the market's up to a point the president made a comment overnight but he looks forward to doing a good trade deal with Chinese troops shot. I heard that let. This feeling all he's doing is the stupid mistake he made yesterday. Well I just I'm just reporting the facts and the the Chinese took that is a very positive statement about is something that common belief here. Is that the Chinese aren't gonna do a darn thing before Election Day to make him look good and that may be come the end of November and with all this stuff going on we could of a breakthrough if there is watch out 10% on the market. I'm trying to make you feel that you are from your lips to God's ears. Rising national debt is going to affect voters mid term election decisions that poll by and that. How many people know and understand with the national debt and I thought that I would like to believe that way I just think that they're saying they're telling the pollsters what they'd like to believe you know. They should feel that way but I are people gonna vote. If if that's important. I gonna vote for the Democrats the Republicans. Made it clear that they'll probably has done lately you know. Whoever is in part in power. You know points the finger at the other right right and says well you know if you vote for me on their pay down that debt. You know trumps at that rate terms and on and balance the budget and it paid down that debt while he's full of crap economy's added four point seven trillion to the debt. And Obama was the edge and Obama was number one before him hasn't Obama -- eight and a half trillion. Bush was five point eight trillion Clinton. Clinton looks like a saint annually added one point four so maybe 40% of the people would be running and Bill Clinton I mean what were they gonna do. That's our. Does the increasing national debt impact the way you vote. He can participate in our poll by visiting our website it is financial exchange show dot company to exchange or dot com. No. Hi everybody it's Barry Armstrong and Jake two Lian we're talking about a program called Z rent. Now this is specifically. Designed for those of you who weren't landlords and used to collector checks with paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Will Z rent allows you to collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy grant works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely buried so we we develops he rained two out of me the whole race because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You missing envelope line in the mostly waiting he might not get all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month. Furthermore if your landlord on vacation in your race thing a boxed up to what he does is it really digitize they'll. It makes the rent electronic payments it allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting out to college student salute. It's predictable it comes at the same time every month. And it's all on me. So the landlords who have been using assisting huge time savings and ointment do you are you still giving the first six months free for landlords the first six months or free and then in addition to that. If you bank it one of the participating banks he ran is always brief. Those participating banks are meter batons don't test the up and that any bank could sign up bright and keep you at a bank in Vermont to Connecticut. They could sign up and become part is the rent yup you your if you have a community bank that wants to be a member have them call us and haven't sign up and the service will then be free free. Going back to the conversation regarding deaths I think most people don't understand. The significance of the deficit. And when you wanna run deficits when you don't want to run deficits at any rate. Most everybody texting you saying no it's not in effect the way I'd vote. On the web site where we do North Pole in terms of trying to figure out you know power. People feeling and stop. The error of audiences they eat that national debt will impact the and I believe that but then so we vote for. Rate they're both both parties like I mean we have a president who's talking about were spending to study a libertarian doesn't that does. Except there's no voice port. Right that's right now that's the one eye liner issue I'm an old fashioned conservative I don't know where that is. I and I'm not I'm not a there's certainly a company that. It's one other proof we have no force or anywhere but. Yeah so it does matter a lot but again there's nobody addressing it in the thing I understand with the president coming from he's like. Popular soccer you to that game of make me look like the bad guys who wants to take away everybody sole security and not go in there I don't make him on a thought for. He thought of the track though. It's not a lot of the answers that god forbid east tell the truth and you're dead he tell the truth your political errors or any let's switch between white and an image of like let's talk about general laughter. This this company disputes. Saturn by the day. The earnings in this case are not really do not really paying much attention to yet they missed on earnings a little bit and their little bit slight revenues. Dividends on its debt that the victim right now comes down to where the gonna go from here they cut the dividend to one parity. And so it never BankAmerica detective in just so they could say you know we've paid dividends for years but these noted. Well there is that but there's also Barry the reason that a lot of the phones that only stocks have requirements their charters that they have to be dividend payers. So like for as a parent a dividend fund like we do every reference before. That fund would have to sell automatically stop the start with elected or not they keep the penny so that the people of the charter and meet him stock but again to save about three point nine billion dollars in cash. In they need cash their restructuring the power division to create two different companies. Speculation on what happens next they gonna keep the the health care business. They could use the cash from a sailboat they love getting income that's a big guys' income generator for thousand of that day. It's not that big I I just think there are a lot of trouble Larry Culp is their new CEO and you know the stock ran up we came in now the reality is setting in as to you know that the the the yet he's been dealt. In most important a significant to point out that. Larry Cole did an unbelievable job at the end her. But in a hurry took a small helping companies. Use the cash flows to build hope you're nice companies in the fall into a great company. He's never had a troubled company turnaround this is a fixer upper this is a total fixer right is as a tired at that it is this. This is when we bring in the wrecking ball and knock down a break it you rebuild. Yeah yeah it Tara you you dig up the foundation in news read I I don't know what happens in east if they guy deep dish still though. Vision for the companies that make you when you look at the companies say OK they're gonna be really glued. Jet engines because they actually are pretty good and but that you you just don't know with the future holes but the power turbines killing them and there's several bad as they have and I think that most disconcerting thing and I speak at this. I owned shares in General Electric. And it's what I sold mine you made a Smart move by I just I mean a dumb. Move keeping it you know sometimes as a value investor you you don't do your homework you just buy stuff because they're cheap. Not a good reason thought of him by his they're cheap and offer something substantive I didn't do homework a night at some point in my come by the problem is. You know you talked about how it's difficult to value and is on. On the upside right now. GE's same way you don't know where the bonds but this. And you are on the bad debt they're holding. You are much of probable long term care businesses the reinsurance as you don't know you have that tail risk and you know to deported more simple form. We've had boom times here. If you're a cyclical your into a company like General Electric you should be printing money like the Boeing seven going like ever out caterpillars been doing. We hear these big profits from booming economy. What happens when. Times it. I just because a lot of problems and you know it's been like one bad story and other ironically since they moved to Boston with what's going on football their shares were down yesterday. Yeah that'll do is that tariffs I think a lot of its tariffs I mean they're saying that their costs are going to be going up substantially it's really hit the bottom line. You know you have the big fear also with a with a company like this that is very sickly oriented as if we're getting in the eighth or ninth inning of recovery. The Boeing's tend to get hit really hard and recessions because your export. Correct but it is but again there's very concerned about big concern about global growth. In January and the big story was synchronized global global growth the whole world was to have better. That's the situation has changed. The world has slowed down in this concerns about 2019 so we've got a lot of issues there's doing fantastic of SA RT in the TV you waiting list of yours yes if they keep your Southwest Airlines and you say while licenses and 760 cents to three to five years substantively I completely agree you and I think the concerns bubbling over done and boy if we end up getting good news on tariffs. This thing could reverse very big way I think people have sort of so many things to worry about that their punishing. Too much companies likable you know because Boeing has to serve a global growth as a terrorist these are labor all the above when we come back. John's going to be talking to Michael Armstrong about under armour and what is Coca-Cola Coke you hope. Coke is up next on the financial. Life goes on FaceBook and followers on Twitter. Time now for my whole street watch a look at the market's performance so far today thanks to Barry and chug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Wall Street watches brought you by leader bank with leaders of the rewards account get 1% cash back with debit purchases and extract. 10% back when you use your card that featured businesses to qualify for these and other rewards call leader bank at 8776917900. Member FDIC. And we a nice little bounce back with stocks Wall Street watch Mike Armstrong joins us. Might get a couple of stocks in the news Coke with a earnings I believe then also under armour. Yes there's starting out of Coca-Cola they've reported a pretty solid. A solid quarter and you're at that has been in a little bit mixed so inspire the fact that their revenue it still bound to consider the last year. The numbers it would get this quarter did beat expectations. Be quarterly profit came in at 58 cents a share which is three and above estimate and I spent matching revenue it is well there's increased strong sales from their diet and sugar free beverages. But losing a little bit traction on their uses milk and other items are doing pretty well surprisingly in the because carbonated beverage areas they'll. A controversial stock that was up opt in and weighed down and bouncing back under armor how are they doing. I've reported are really knock out quarter that quarter so. It yet roster they had a little bit of the past year this year they've had quite the bounced back at bay more than doubled. Work out the court they earn 25 cents a share compared the content assessments were about twelve cents per share. Revenue is about forecast and a lot of this came from overseas sales so making it real at ways outside the United States. As right now this stock is up 22 and a half percent this morning. While huge move it because it was out of favor so it is do for a bounce I suppose but today and on Wall Street it looks like we have. Quarter rotation going on what people kind of getting out of the old hot stocks and into what they perceive as value. Yeah yeah I think you know last few days ago medical school report these earnings that would have been a lot less well received today these stocks you know. Moving not not substantially but they're up one half percent today on the there. Mike Armstrong Wall Street watched thank you very much as Wall Street want presented by liter bank with leaders of their rewards account yet 1% cash back with debit purchases and an extra 10% back when use your card it featured businesses to qualify call. Leader bank at 8776917900. Member FDIC. Traders are making a lot of money betting against your FaceBook. And is on your Netflix your Google. How they do. They're making a lot of money by basically shorting the stocks what does that mean you'd. You're basically ball or winning with the intent to buy it back like tonight let's say I own shares of him right. You borrow them from me would like charge rate is about it and get to about it when the team for Ian paying rent yeah I mean. I'm not really up on blogs I've never short a stock myself grows along. I either don't buy it or buy it I don't say they have to read the stock before you sell it ray it's not free no correct and sometimes. If it is speculative stock. Yeah Yale law and a interest when your yet back but brokerage companies that if I would mice stocked I only available for someone else short like to be compensated for that. But traders are doing that in the opening Asia they're just buying it and they're there they're selling and buying it back I guess it was such as which short selling is. People are turning EST stocks are very big way the problem is when you get momentum stock that just rides ruinous moment them. Once the music stops and turns negative. There's just no one underneath these stocks and you know we talked about the fact that Amazon is the most unbelievable company possibly of this of this century. But it shifts the stock itself to speak and it's like its own and I think we both asked people what is worse. When you asked that question they just kind of give you like spare him couldn't get that that was right the the challenges that continues to meet with him as I look at. The two big challenges that I look at. For Amazon news in they have this web services business. And there's been an absence and it arrogance. From their competitors right their competitors and just basically said it since and they did they stole Ole law. Clients from companies like Microsoft IBM he looked at IBM it's. Terrible company to old. And and why I bought IBM. But you just look at and I mean yeah it's it's it's all the CEOs incompetent. And yeah and you know and now she's making this deal for Red Hat that's witches you know. Hail Mary pass. In and there now IBM's gonna try to compete with him as a maybe you're gonna have margin compression with that business. And then. Everybody in their brother is trying to get into the online sales the target is it is formidable. It would electric company are not made me. Be very formidable competitor Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has healed company's effort for forty years they need you know think about what they did. The they know how to compete and their and their on line growth percentage wise is probably going to be as Amazon this year. The Abbott its in its small miniscule but the the fact is the the Amazon woke up sleeping giant and and in its targets here. The may season that way there it's everybody's got a little chunk of this at some point people who say. Why don't we need to yes that was proprietary the idea of selling stuff on line delivery today is very cool in 2013. But at the same time right now I'd like pebble. And I have on the Wal-Mart is consistently. Less expensive in about half the products maker that's the the depth of props I tried to shop on Wal-Mart the sport he's object used yet I don't but I know a lot of people do I tried to use yet this morning to buy something good. You know and and I can find irony in this. And it's about. You know any any and is trying to run more comparison shop yeah. It's doing is retail in defense of Amazon's becoming less and less important for the do you believe that because of as you said because of the club business and now this new business which started takeoff is advertising. Which their. Bringing in billions of dollars in advertising I think that's an extra. As though. If you all this stuff is gonna have small. Smaller margins. The growth rate has to come down in now we say I I one of the reasons Berry won the stock has been so we can. Is they've had enough success to the way we can get an idea how much profit they're going to make it's not limited someday with the theater thing people don't take into consideration. Used to the labor costs that they are going to occur which were told gonna grow up one point five billion dollars that's a huge issue now in an I don't know how accurate that numbers. And it's gonna go higher you know and and that's part of this narrative wondered unskilled work rate year you can get hired you know skills you don't even have to graduate high school you can go work in an Ames on warehouse sixteen box plots per hour. And yet health care health insurance and yet they are absorbing a lot of under educated workers which is good that they get actively vigor but I think at some point. You know I haven't there's no unionization. And warehouses build it trying to. You know your your outlining I think a narrative of what is happening big picture. We knew the last few years and we talked about politics that. We knew that stock valuations. As a percent of them of the economy. That our stockholders. Share of the pie which historically high. We knew that that I was gonna have to be shared elsewhere with the worker it's happening we knew would happening that he audience exactly. These people deserve and an end and we're getting to a war equitable sustainable economy. And the market. Forces that figure entity that does is also a good thing. If if the Amazon if the unskilled uneducated worker rate high school drop out. Can make twenty bucks an hour and have health insurance that's good for society. You know what if it hits it off the calculus of that they're less likely to commit a crime. They're less likely to have a child that way they're less likely to be on food stamps are less likely to be a disability. Meaning that. It's good when people work you want the lowest it's like when your building assets ST UD about your with the football team hockey team basketball team rate you'll he's good week loosely rate. Jack properties to save at a B and in you can only compete to the degree that your worst player. Rate and that's as a society that we're do we're taking care of the worst players Bill Belichick manages the bottom five players whose roster. All the time that's his biggest where. What's happening right now with those bottom five players are help you meant to prevent it. And they're getting better and gonna get better and bright and and you know media world with a 15100 dollar share Amazon with a lot of well paid workers and is a better world than 2000 dollars or Amazon. With a lot of disgruntled workers. Hey it's pretty hard folks to find a bank. And you know that I wanted to have it did you know the greatest phone on the planet. And tiger should loosen up I did not call you that sir. You can Mel and that's how that's what I turtle. That's what I heard you say. He said when he sees it is that my batteries. And right after charge my phone number one reason why people upgrade yeah interpreted you have such. The deal. It's a phone yeah quade just go get into better. Gotten better. Get a new phone yeah we'll let you know keeping Alan I'm going on. While over two years my thought we in and that. I can see myself keep in this phone now for another guy used a seven plus it yeah I mean emotionally it's well. We've we've talked about this for years I just think what you've got two were on the sixth or seventh generation. Eat eat was that moment in time like with personal computers will we stop upgrading every time goes into process that came out like this works yeah this is fun. I mean until we put like me on the borders ever laptops and Cambodia needs to spend four grand talker opt for grain and oh yeah laptop for expense. In you to replace them. Like every. 1218 months because the process to speed like doubled your that you could actually do work on the we reached that winter in the 67 generation which happened as we did predict lengthening of the upgrade cycle. It's totally happened in on top of the fact you don't need it. What really has linked in the cycle is that the contracts on these phones. The culture you have with the provider. Are now separate from the phone deals so this is really bought transparency the fact these are expensive because. Even 27 bucks a month when he because I'm not buying new and you know happens that that do you get in the mail. The ball after you pick up the phone yeah it's like. Yes it's 35 dollars us and I go get a new battery for thirty bucks and being paid 35 dollars a month. To use a phone that's perfectly fine it is the same software is the brand new. So usually you might lose a little bit of screen resolution your. Pictures might not be quite as good yeah yeah no facial our commissioner anything but the task to ascertain you know I guess it's only. Happy for complaints for imply that you know when I try to use my wife's phone it's it's a pool it's like your phone that's why don't really know. Like this is a hole eight the whole swiping thing. Is it dad you know like Alex liked him. But I mean the bottom bottom line is you know. All these things that are bad is that all these things that are improvements in. Are fixing the problem doesn't exist like I noticed each phone upgrade the first few generations. While the the way the camera was noticeably different. Intelligence between 78 and nine they're offline. So they're trying to fix problems that don't exist in the trying to create. But at the same time you've got to take your hat off to apple because they're getting more money per full written than they've ever got so when people do upgrade. Boy their pay and port. People ask when is Costco going to kick off Black Friday now Costco. Get forgotten a Costco and Black Friday now it. I'd eat our in my life it is arguably is bad as a Wal-Mart but we'll talk about that when we return and stock talk. Cushing and old guy of the month October called Medicaid income trusts. Todd I have to confess the average person. It is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong the need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid. Income trust or an asset protection trust you know very I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical and and and people aren't gonna know one player and others so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing as they play the taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court we can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up. And I door all the time. Also make sure on their card when you get their card to use the letters LL AM after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters in taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you do for you that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you wanna have a flat feet. Regular note it's gonna cut you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave the had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. Well it really is a challenge because you don't have the fixed income options that we used to CDs bonds that were yielding 567%. That does not here anymore and wanted to take our treasuries like 310. In one of the real challenges I think is being able to keep up with inflation if you're an instruments that are all yielding two or 3% and so the conventional wisdom is hey you take your rates attractive from a hundred and that's how much equity exposure you should have I don't know that necessarily holds true for everyone today simply because if -- in a portfolio that sixty or 70% bonds I think you might struggle with keeping up with inflation over the next couple decades what about factoring in what you're living expenses are how does one do that yet to make sure the have a budget put together before handed figuring out what you actually need and what your retirement looks like it's a big thing that you need to figure out Ari can move to lower cost of living area of the certain expenses that falloff those are things that go into this. The stock market volatility is keeping some of us awake at night the ones that it's not keeping awake at night. Are the ones who aren't invested in us. Or just don't follow hi everybody it's very in John Mooney with you here I hesitate to give out a market update is rock 115 point to put. If the market does what it's been Dylan. No selloffs around 330 feels a lot like yesterday remember we opened up big news down about a hundred or so around lunchtime and before you know the present 500 points that one. We have a spread. Of 900. Points yesterday on the death on the death. That's the biggest spread since the panic Bakken February you know it makes it volatile that that volatility. You know I guess you wonder if somebody just doesn't sit well. And pull the plug in there's a lot of followers and in and you get this computerized trading that goes on but it would hit certain levels that force to treat aids. You know in the years. For age and older investor who's lived through in 87. 2000 us 2008 yes for the first see our training is both for a season investor had health. I think yesterday that this is what keeps this up at night gave the go the thing that makes me feel a little bit. It is. And I I don't see. A big lending bubble. I don't see valuations being out of line you know it they're not. They're not crazy. Could they go lower yeah I mean if you look at valuations in march of 2009 there are significantly lower than there today but let's talk about that right now. Were at fourteen point eight times earnings the historical average going forward. Historic average is fifteen which means we're just under the typical normal stock market and most importantly. The typical interest rate associated with the typical market. It's four and a half to 5% on the ten year right now we're 3.2 would freaking out Mike go to three and a half. You know by any measure stocks are not expensive at all and and also reported perspective. Just a few months ago the PE was eighteen point eight. So it's more happy years with the market is becoming a lot cheaper and as stocks ghost somewhat lower that's that's that's a corrective benefit. Dividend paying stocks have been out of favor for numbered years. They have been because the the concern is that interest rates are gonna book fervor. Yet and that you know people that while there are kernel you know that dividend stock is going to be less attractive interest rates go up. You know if at 4% dividend and into getting growth over time. I think that's a lot better than being a bond I think he can't raise rates further talks well the market's coming around to agree with them because if you look at the futures market. But we all assume December was a slam dunk he was an eighty something percent chance a month ago. Under 68%. And I'll tell you summit if they don't move in December. The market and sell off. Because Abe will be worried that did Powell know something we don't know because it's assumed on. War that he's giving in to presidential pressure. Both I always monopoly multiples are extreme negative so I think December's slam dunk with sharp is talking about is what the market is now looking at. A drastically reduced chance of multiple in what he says Taylor won one hike next year yes one night. Yeah guess what the futures market has come around to greet with shocked and he said that months while he was that this the futures are coming around her agreement. I can say with Dario right he's going to be unbearable. If he's going to be absolutely unbearable these stories and if that is right and and in in their other indications that inflation. May have peaked in July. The forward inflation indicators. Are actually softening a little bit in August and September wouldn't it be interest in this housing also seems that yes is so if you had. Inflation peak yet and if yet housing. Maybe even level Wofford. Throughout New England needs and in South Florida that are selling them like. You paid how much would that. But you like it and at a thinking they got a bargain picking me overpaid on I'm looking at that that's OK maybe people overpaid for the last couple years or maybe even just last year people and overpaying. And you couple that with some wage growth see that the thing that I. Think is going to where you're gonna see inflationary pressure is on wages right right and I think you're gonna see. Dramatic wage increases you know American workers have been screwed for. Fifteen years none. Now it's the supply and demand you talked any talk to our advertisers. Any of our advertisers has talked and Jim Toledo from one of our affiliate. He said there. Half of the ads I read now our employers looking for workers yeah and I think about when you listen there yeah. You hear a lot of a lot of ads and and you know this is not a bad place to be it's been a long time. Since our biggest concern was the economy seems almost too hot to be able to sustain and you might laugh when I say it's too strong. But a reflection of the fact that we might not be able to handle the the degree of the economy is the fact that we don't have an open pool in Wohlers. Employees at our friend of mine who's probably Ed. A very good economist. Told me years ago Sudbury you getting to the 2020s then you're going to be reading about. Massive worker shortages. Unlike anything you've ever seen before a lot of it due to berth for. You know birthrate declined in 2007. Never came. Until there read their read recently there's another battle all the 88 last year was another bad year for babies I read anecdotally that that there's. You pitchers and it won the last three or four months and there's actually been quite a spike in the Bur for now I. There I know that's not Tucker way to go. I Tucker is contributing he would he would get this kid out of the rule by December 31 of our. And he has a eat up do date the 24 yeah I think it starts and no neon I'll bet around 220 for the amount to the 28 actually it now. But that tax deduction yeah exactly half the but that's another factor the economy is is may be that long awaited jump in the birth rate is it doesn't help us for eighteen years. Hooked well placed a buy stuff I did others there's there's a benefit also we need workers too. I know I wanna retire Opel workers you wanna retire again you know talk to one week away from retirement by the way how did you put that out there now I John Moody. Is last show his last day of work is in one week. And I'm so envious what we know you've got to deal with the massive labor shortage you can get a life you look at what I have to deal millennial. I mean when you retire Muzak to spend more time with millennium is like still don't understand you're gonna have to come to grips with you're actually age which is actually old I am because I thank when when I leave guess what. You know that guy you're the old guy and it's not even close. So you'll model at the deal with the fact of his labor shortage means I'm pretty much irreplaceable yes but the fact that you are an old guy I'm OK with that I finally can you deal with this yeah I am you need a vacation I'd I think I'll take. And it has south. Think like of that bar again. Costco. EU one bargains actual costs and the Costco and it will be used to my fever shopping destinations. Get Costco is their Black Friday is use. You know ironically it's on Friday I I I thought we were not doing the story so I'd rather odd. He beat normally open their stores yet antennae they're gonna open up on. November 23 at nine. And you know this is a game that has gotten more competitive and less competitive pending you look at him. There was that rush to get everybody to work on Thursday. And people got really mattered that. Companies start realizing it word book and we can push whatever business on the line do the same sales have people might have to wait long lines. Have people not kill each other in long lines in at the same business and give our employees aboard so that's kind of a realist work. You know in the online world that seems like abuse. When you know if I don't have to be there why am I there and then all 'cause of awful things are happening right. Before killing each other to get those big screen TV. But that wasn't good but you know it in the previous hour I would I'd say I wish the president periodically would get shot out. She shut the hell up Mr. President. Yesterday that the market took a tumble yeah based on his comments regarding tariffs. Yeah I saw it hit the tape and he said that we're just gonna put terror and everything and work were looking at it and and that's when we went down 500 points or the market was. He started the day up to fifteen. That was down to close to unchanged at midday and managers when the freefall after that. And then John Mooney this morning comes and says it's okay there till death has just said. That he thinks he's getting ready who is he think now today what what time is easy the meaning of change is my bit he said oh we're gonna get a great deal. He he mentioned overnight in the only reason I mention this is a big deal is because the the Chinese market reacted very favorably some look what just grasping at straws here you know there's a lot of back and forth there was a threat yesterday to disarm the market overnight I think trump realizes maybe should decide that but that's why he should shot at a yeah well you know the markets are going up and down based on what a tweet about the border fine. Question about the market in the terrorists well we have an ongoing negotiation. You know in a war words in with sheet he's in China. He should understand that they're they're not gonna do that how bad is it going to be next Tuesday. I got how much how much power the socialist we'll have to. I've got the error Democrats picking up 35 seats and I in this in the house I've got the Republicans picking up to in the senate. And that gets us to a place we were at last two years of Oklahoma where gridlock. Yeah you gonna have. Government by executive order I think you'll see reduced. You know season stuff from the regulations run reduced more and more you know and then you'll deal with issues like a possible Supreme Court nominees and the Democrats who simply. Bring up investigations into who was doing what it is time freshman in college and said that stuff and let's look at it it's up yet but they don't have the power to do anything. And third Republicans won't have all that much power to initiate much legislation so I think we're gonna gridlock. American tech firms are winning the research and development spending race with China what does that mean to you it's more important than you might think that's our next topic on the financial exchange. American companies maintain a major advantage over their Chinese rivals make critical area. Spending. On research and development and final this because you know it's kind of like the militaries that. We spend more money right in the Chinese. View on the military but they paid either lose soldiers now. In that Esther and and same thing with their research and development right. The gate we pay our research scientist 200000 bucks a year and write what is trying to pay twenty grand forty grant fifty I I don't know but it's it's it's certainly not 200000 bucks yet will. At the end of the day we do spend five dollars for every one dollar who's Chinese and and I I would have a problem is we pay Americans that's true but we're dealing with people who are. Better educated you know I know that the Chinese have improved education no question about that. But I mean we spend more which in theory should. Result in a better future. We references earlier though that is CNBC survey showed that because of higher costs of terror and input costs and 13 of US firms are now budgeting less money for research and development. That is very concerning to me and because you know we look at giving tax breaks which I think it's wonderful we're doing that in our. I'd love to see a lot of being plotted to. The future does this make you nurse and a share statistic with the China produced. Four point seven million graduates. In science technology. Engineering and mathematics and 2060 rights or write that down folks four point seven million as with Chinese produced. We produced 560. House and a bunch of those Chinese. I mean yes so we kick him out. Right graduating get out right. And in many cases that might actually good because of stealing our our ideas but that's the other should we talked about earlier is you know we can spend all this money in research and development. And if the Chinese who will be stealing. The our our intellectual property woods and not if they are they are in right People's Liberation Army this again from the Wall Street Journal today's Wall Street Journal. The People's Liberation Army has sponsored more than 2500. Military scientists and engineers to study abroad over the past decade. This according to research by the Australian strategic policy institute. AS PI is a nonpartisan think tank that was created in 2001 by the Australian government. Why because they're afraid that China might be stealing intellectual property they are the they've got soldiers these are people in. Better enlisted in their military John. That are attending. Boston University there attending University of Miami under the guise of being a student they don't tell the schools that there in the military. You get the feeling here that that militarily we're fighting the last century's wars now. It would be like in the last century didn't start investing in Raytheon and Lockheed Martin's yet win the next war is all economic and and intellectual property I mean this would be like in the military lasts about century. Investigating. In lots of investing in lots of rocks. We could be throwing people. What's happening right now as we have a war going on. And some of the players are United States. Large in the western world China and Russia. In the words of that Vladimir Putin whoever wins a wins the world. It's not about rockets it's not about the fact that we can blow up the world 24 times. While you can't have a washer can only blow the world twenty times so yeah we're stronger than them so hard I mean that is just twentieth century thinking. In the 21 century we have a war going on right now we're in the middle of it and it's intense and and went a year Tim cook's day. What I'm witnessing is the weapons station of my technology. By the Chinese. That's a declaration of war. Our trivia contest is brought to buy seasons 52. With 43 locations nationwide including two in the Boston area and one in West Palm Beach. Regarding retirement income and chuck it strikes me you know we go to work every day we put money into our 401K plans typically it's going into. Mutual funds or exchange traded funds that we're using to accumulate wealth during our working years high earning years. That whole equation changes once we retire and we hit age 6570. And we say cheeks out of a gun I need to take some income from powerful. Yeah it it really does change and specifically war go to more of an income generation mindset and it's difficult today because if you look at a lot of the ways that people historically did that CDs yielding 5%. Bonds yielding five or 6% her you don't have those tools available anymore seat need to make sure that you're still adapting your portfolio to the new demands of retirement. But you need to make sure that using the right instruments and so that can be combination of dividend paying stocks. It can be equities that you simply think gonna grow and pull little principal off there as well last in the right mix of bonds they can generate some income as well. What about municipal bonds that's something people use. It is of particular fewer in a high income bracket it's something that a lot of people use that we tend to target simply because the tax efficient easy game there can be significant if he'd like it. This is really the nightmare scenario for China this is why their economies scrambling this is why their currencies did. And this is why their stock markets down dramatically here today this is yet another example of them. Arguably the most glaring example of why this really could hurt China a lot. When you start seeing is this really does bite into their economy so what we're seeing as we're seeing collateral damage on both sides. Clearly China has more to lose than we do. Which is adding some urgency. Clearly their markets have reacted even more adversely than our markets although more Mars started to Portland this month and so the stakes what we're experiencing is nothing. Compared to the Chinese absolutely. You know the impact of this for the United States will be. Small. Each evening have a deflationary impact. It may make a salute them more insular in terms of how we deal in May hear your four and K you may look you're purple you may get your brokerage account statement for the next year to. And Seiji and darn right there and that's that's a cost of doing business but. The problem is you have to you have to fight and and it's it's not an easy thing to fight because people's. While I TV you know east field by TV for 400 dollars that's cost 600. Tough. Yes I mean this is this is that the negative of what's happening but this is the new reality that were and he's the consequences that. That we have four it was essentially a trade war and in China has a lot more to lose in the United States. I do think this is setting out to some sort of negotiation. To come to agreement on on some of these key issues there's too much at stake in also from the priest. Of the guys that I think you know the problem to a I would like to agree if you I and I Enron saga and I would love to agree to Petit. The our cultural themes I mean it's it's ingrained in their culture to steal. And this is a separate issue. And we have to it's the shot it is the issue but there's other issues with respect to products that we make and manufacturer and sell. And other products that they make in manufacturers sell. That we encompass some sort of agreement I think that your weekend why should blowing have to pay for an issue that has to do with apple. I mean this comes down to mean I I don't say I feel like we can address bull. I'm not sure we can help me I'm losing -- deli because I don't trust the on anything I don't trust them as far as they can throw it is just I don't trust the saudis. Yeah I did it eat if this is the case we're gonna have to really rely on domestic consumption. And the consumption of allies that we're gonna have a new world where what we're gonna trade bill instead of China. And the net. That right eat your seat companies move their manufacturing. Out of China and once they move them back. And and the problem in the meat in the in the near term is that we have American companies are really you bet the farm on growth in children. And we talked budget autonomy Starbucks in new General Motors and the General Motors sells more cars in China in the United States. You know they sell a lot of cars and make a lot of money about whether the business is much more profitable in the states with the growth story is there. Where there are more people and is going to be a lot more people move next next 203000 years. It's a new world and in the end it there the rules are changing and I agree 100% that they're not playing by the rules. In May never happen and they are culturally John it's just different like Palin turned to a contract. With an American company and then just not honor right right and then he sued you get a judgment to New York pre get a judgment in in superior court. And you're owed fifty million dollars. They see you in China right and get an equal judgment and corrupt legal system for fifty million dollars and they don't pay. They say well we had you yet you have a fifty million dollar judgment against us but we've got fifty million judgment against China. And my group my Olympic favorite stories your sank like. Apple's doing really well also they discrete their apple stores. And they say a word big just knock it off they knock off the sign in our proper name look at boats. Yeah go to China the only Bose speakers and you get an update giants speaker's been exactly real cheap and it at a good price. Irony is I don't know with the and resolution is maybe I did see. We are restricting Chinese chipmakers from doing business with American firms that is a start the US barring US US companies from doing business with a Chinese state owned chipmaker. Mike Ron is accused of stealing its secrets. Again this is another example of the Chinese obviously being very overt and stealing our technology and we're saying no enough is enough. This is where the wars being fought and there are not great that the war or not missiles. There this is a matter how many tanks have an and is. You know after he got enough to do damage you've got to seriously question. Art debate about the military's going to be used right I think it's fascinating. The defense stocks were you doing now. Because I think regardless brick it was 210 box not long ago at 65 bucks. Its creator. Is that the economic warfare. Is is on news is what. Is going to be is no it's not a it's not that terms I think. Your defense companies are looking at it in people are looking at Saint Anthony you know. You you're gonna have drones in your Gannett skirmishes in the Middle East and Africa will be a mass in the kidney problems in south American Venezuela places like that and then I I think legitimately when you look at what's happened in Saudi Arabia. And you see that Saudi Arabia is Raytheon and collectively the US defense businesses number one customer in the world. And then we hear you know you think these weapons have in hand and we'll be used against America. It's cool raises an interesting debate in the years to come as we despite the as we just legitimately discuss the largest number in our budget and that's discretionary. And how much we should actually be spending. Do you have a trust to protect your assets if not and if you're closing in on retirement this messages for you. We doubt maybe 910%. Oh by the eight or 9% for the month and now we should mention General Electric which you mentioned earlier having its worst day since 2009. On top of that it's much is it that it's down 8987. Cents but that's 8%. We're doing what Davis a kind of FCC issue to. Yeah the there's being they're they're counting is being the SEC in the DOJ announced that they are expanding. Their investigation DOJ is yes and not good news and you know what whenever you're wanting the SEC and you can you know settle it right Jack can be done lately like Elon Musk is that you okay well how much you want. You know will pay. DOJ that isn't and it's usually mean some excellent jail department of justice and when you have a laundry list of things we look for that we're concerned about. And now Jeff animal looks in stripes huh. I mean. When we talk about accounting standards. That's that's yeah that's the the golden rule I mean the whole system is predicated upon honest accounting standards. You've you messed that up you've got major problems and now we have the DOJ. You know in the SEC looking at that not to. You know I I really feel this new guy help ease the good guys got a great track record but he's married to maps feature has. Any advice for retirees. You know stock market. You know it's it's early it's up today but it could be down its toll led 43. So by 343. It could be down five the president lapses he said that it tweaked. Right. Yeah exactly you know I think the best advice is to do nothing sometimes it seems counter intuitive the market does not over investing doesn't reward you on activity and I think Warren buff lets it Rip Van Winkle had a perfect investing strategy do you go to sleep for Tony here to go to sleep at twenty years you'll probably be better off. Then what he'll be tempted to do which will not be something constructive good decide it was Smart to do more ago. Still Smart to do one thing I'd I'd recommend though is the risk here is in the near term high flying stocks particularly technology. Ian long maturity bonds if rates keep going up postings gonna get hammered. And they don't pay you much in interest to justify that rate so. As we don't have too much exposure and long maturity bonds and high wind text practically thing. Just ride it out these prices are reasonable as Barry points out the economy is strong it's not issuable weak economy. You know lending bubble. In and that's the thing scares the Dickens out of me we don't really when he publicly with this a little bit more debt on the balance sheets of American corporations and we'd like absolutely. Is this a couple of early warning signs for consumers but I think that feels like it's easy credit card companies poem back he would see that they're getting more concerned absolutely so you know I think doing nothing makes a lot of sense. We get 25% earnings growth this quarter nineteen and a half percent next quarter we're worried it's going to be seven point 98% next year but that's still. So we're back pretty healthy environment it's going to be up and down but there's a lot of meat on the bone and investments here. And you know we can make the case that a small cap company could be written than the because you can make growth assumptions that are appropriate. But when you're dealing with a company that's worth you know 70800. Billion dollars growing at 29% rent is that there. 29 and me may be 28 some. And in trading at a multiple in the triple digits. That seems like a disconnect. So. You know Amazon came and the problem is this for you by coming like that your priced to perfection and as long as things are absolutely perfect it works out. The music stops one day when something imperfect happens Lester Tesla. Well they've got their bumps that they have been there I look at them you know it is. I eat a mosque is a magician he's he's got nine and I mean it. Tell us stocks trade at 335 dollars they don't have growth like that I mean I. You you know look at those two companies and their you know similar in age. Very. You know flamboyant. And genius operators right it I think you put Bezos and mosque in the same category terms of genius right. But you know Tesla shares now to back I just don't know if it's still today. Very difficult for me to get my arms around him is on and try to put a value and out they are I think ironically it's because they're making so much money. That we can now treat them as them fairly mature business that can be valued. And the most positive analyst I heard say maybe in 20/20 get fifty dollars of earnings. If you play thirty multiples of that catcher 15100. Those are aggressive optimistic. Projections on a very large company to begin with. So now we're realists you know there's going to be tough to justify the evening and at fifty even though it's down down 4%. You still look at it at least I do yet be jaded I'd say. And you know part of the problems. Have always been a value. Right whether abide real estate Villa or whether I'm buying stocks. And I can't get my arms are. And that you know here's the thing being of value investor you and you let a lot of sexy ideas run. And you don't get take advantage of them. The good news is when the music stops. You start looking at these is real businesses and an end in Amazon really has been treated as something that just is never gonna go down. I wasn't this in defense of the price for the first time in many years I can actually say you know what. It might actually be pretty close to being what it's worth it and it's been waiting in the sky wait its trip I look at gotten sent its triple pay for. Now two point reflect her in double click the effect it's it's it's even justifiable. Price. I don't. It is at it but not to jump moderates and at least is not a ridiculous of the bullets. IBM down a couple bucks I feel about them. How I know you won't deny and I don't mean to put salt. I mean if I just don't like Cheney on the I you know I gave her chance she's been there 67 years she's seems to be making bad decisions here's were comes down to for IBM at some point the Watson type technology will be a significant part perhaps of the way we handle health care deal with incredibly complex issues. And the other issues this whole hybrid club. This this cloud that's necessary for the most essential things that we can't screw around with at all. They're gonna have a leg up on that thanks so it is that I had to deal yet again. And and where and we are IBM has already positioned. So like they're gonna try to be the high and if you got a saving at all costs company. Dow is up. Today it's up 207 points but it's early votes but if you'd never know with this market and nasdaq's up 71 point TS in -- when he. Oil's down 46 cents a barrel at 6658. And ten year treasuries on base is 2310. Yeah let's get there that's that's actually at TCU. Younger treasury. We'll be back tomorrow at another edition.
