This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and shops. Exclusive look at business and financial news affecting you your city to a war. Stay informed and today about economic and market trends plus breaking business news. And the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and shocks. The business news in terms of. Earnings report and the economic data are inconsistent. At best. We've got reports coming out companies like bowling that looked pretty strong but then you look at caterpillar 3M and they look we. You'll get economic data in terms of GDP he picked out pretty strong and you look at auto sales and you look at new home sales in their very weak. Hi everybody it's very in truck with you here it's a days it's Wednesday. Fun day Wednesday everybody's got a little bit of a hangover from having stayed up to watch the Red Sox including our dear producer mr. Tucker syllable you know what Seoul thanks. You made away from the united yeah how are you go. I got about halfway through the fifth inning and woke up and it was the seventh inning and says I guess it's time to go to bed fourth inning for me but. I admitted through the entire fourth in which is like 10 o'clock that's that's pretty good at army I got to about 1015. And any. It will start off with Boeing. You know the reason the markets. So are outside you know positive territory still down that. It's doing a little better because Boeing had a very good court yeah Bo coming out with their third quarter earnings elements. I don't I sold my Boeing shares. Back in September. So I no longer owned Boeing I did for good chunk of this year. But Boeing coming out with the better than expected earnings and better than expected guidance of reason their guidance by about three to 4%. And it looks like they may end up topping their revenue. A goal of a hundred billion dollars for the first time as well the interesting thing with them compared to. Some of the other manufacturing companies that reported recently most notably mentioned caterpillar and 3 am. Both of those companies had significant issues with their margins which is why they were punched face they simply wore as profitable people were sold back. In that was going to be my question to you. How can chatter but hope pillar be struggling and bowling. Is not you know they they're they're both me you know caterpillar makes heavy machinery sort of following his happen to be jets yet I I don't know why haven't looked in enough depth to be able to say why you know bowl was able to maintain margins the way they were aware some of these other companies war I'm wondering if its contracts unit has. They have a waiting list if you don't buy a a 767. What do you know wait four years five years well they they it depends on the plane you know that they're 737 analysts is up five or six years the 747 list is out near a multitude announced that no one's buying 740 sevens and depends on the specific plane just the role built on different lines actually. The interesting thing in what what I would be curious about is in those contracts. If because there's really only to place that you can buy commercial airplanes during world. My question is do they have contingencies built in pay if the cost of this goes up your cost may arise by X amount that I wonder if they almost not to have guaranteed margins in some cases but just of the contract language built. To accommodate some of these things that's one of the things that I will get there. As far as hate is is that something. That that's playing and it could be something where maybe they hedge some of this dollar strength and they says pay me we're gonna hedge against this in order to be able. Not to still get what we think we're going to want these planes. I don't know what the reason is but they beat on their margins where's all these other manufacturers are reporting all kinds of problems with margins. All right so there you have it folks yesterday the market's decline was down 500 points at one point. Was largely due to caterpillar then today you get blowout numbers very strong numbers coming out of ball and that's were trying to explain the the there's. A lot of inconsistent data then the next one will talk about mortgage applications. They're weakening. New home sales came up this morning chuck peered down five and a half percent. The estimate had been down point 6% so we're missing on mortgages were missing on new home sales I talked to. The the president of the bank last week. And they are one of the largest mortgage lending operations in the state and the state of Massachusetts he said business is dead EJE of the the new home business is people are not buying new homes. And he said the refinance business dried up six months ago with great throw. Yeah I expected to put some numbers it's an act is obviously get someone still buying houses not as many ran finance applications are 32% lower than a year ago. And overall mortgage volume is off 16%. From the same week a year ago so there's definitely something happening here in and it seems to be heavily tied. To mortgage rates kind of being that straw that's breaking the camel's back in that looked you have all these price increases. In 1516. And 17678%. Really consist house price gains. In homes. In what's how and normal. The good just to put that in perspective you saw these large price gains. But historically. Two and a half. Yeah the the in and I think it's important understand that yet if you buy a house you don't buy it thinking it's gonna go up in value like the stock does. You might get lucky you you might time that new mid may be your fortune you bought your house in 2011 or 2013 and you think your genius because it's gone up and die by 10% a year. And you you got lucky right unity eat you just got you have no we're lucky. It and in so you know when you see three or four years like that you say okay. They can only go on so long and it usually it's constrained by wage growth neo wages are only growing to 3% a year okay that's going to be something. That that factors in here but really what seems to have been kind of again that straw that breaks the camel's back not to go back that metaphor. Really what it is. Is that interest rates on mortgages thirty year fixed mortgages have gone up about one and a half percent in the last 22 months that equates to 15% less buying power so you at home prices nationally. Rise by 30% over four years. Then an additional 15% in terms of buying powers route reduction you're talking like 4045%. Overall in terms of overall cost just to buy the same house. That's something that's just not sustainable where incomes have gone deep secret housing bubble T think people that are bought their house in the last year paid too much. So I'm someone who bought a house in the last year. I think got paid too much I don't think it's a bad long term in decision just because again I still think it's going to end up working out fine for me and you were selling the same time I was selling at the same time see what are you sold your place for too much and then paid too much for your next place. Yeah an Indian realistically when I look at it. I probably paid somewhere between five and 8% to monkey milk if our buying the same property now that's what I think like I would be able to get it for so I sit there and I say OK look I got lucky when I bought my first place because I bought the -- in thirteen win hey everything was kind of started to boom. That you may pay a little too much and I think I did it's it's not some let's catastrophic but I think I did. You know ultimately what I tell people when they buy house's you'd eat it almost doesn't matter first of all now in in ten years you'll remember what you pay. I'm getting the world you'll because you know you're you're put money into that house every weekend. So thanks for reminding me you you don't remember what you may have said oh you like paid 800000 dollar that house but. You know you you put. Hundreds of thousands of dollars and these homes over the years Morgan wants sweat and tears that you put in. It's it's the it's our Leo marks all over my heart are part cold cash don't rove bushes and this and that. But it any were it it it almost as an act you have to lifts up you have to have a house of could live it down by the river and you can rip rent but you can only rent Purcell and stars were so there's a lot of data. That that's inconsistent one thing that should have be a little nervous though. Is foreigners buying US treasuries has softened and and I found this in the Wall Street Journal's foreigners. Increased their holdings in treasuries. By 78 billion dollars in the first eight months twenty team CC eighty so would you talk about seventy billion dollar for the hold. But the problem is that's just half of what they bought. So there they're raped a purchase of domestic treasures American treasuries is decline. In this is something I've been hitting on all year as something that is going to be went when I talk about the things that concern me over the next three to five years out. Housing is gonna figure itself out auto sales a figure themselves like the going to be what they're going to be we go through cycles with housing and autos. This. Represents potentially be biggest shift that we have seen in the last forty years as far as. Where money is going worldwide in what is going to be happening. Currency it from currency perspective I worry about it because say you know we've been in a lot of trade wars evening about the disputes we've had in Germany Mexico Canada these are friendly countries night. And take some of those countries are saying okay we see the United States doesn't like us anymore. We're gonna do with it and we we had to settle on this trade dispute. But we're gonna get him on the edges meaning we're not gonna by the Treasury's. At the same rate that we used. The Tracy they're gonna get even some of the trade disputes are kind of a red Herring on this this has been happening since twenty fourteens and this is not new this is you go back. Four years this has been there's a long term this has been happening since 2014. And specifically when you look at this the big shift has been that China is no longer buying US treasury does not relieve the tree they are they're buying the bit at a slower pace they're not buying them on that basis China times premise and like it it might fluctuate you know 510 billion month to month but it's up 51 down for the next. That the big thing here is if you look down the international payment system is structured. It uses a system called swift that is largely dollar based. When we put sanctions on other countries that is the system that we largely prevent either countries are individuals or groups of individuals from using. These countries that want to do their own thing you're saying look we wanna get away from this payment platform we want to move towards our own currency so that we can do what we want without the US telling us hey you can't do that now. Doesn't this render the Fed meaningless. It when you see note this this renders the Fed far more important I don't know last thirty years I don't know the the you know the president why shop and at the feds and you gotta stop raising rates. Well because the bond markets so great to know that means the feds the buyer of last and they can always buy whatever can they can print money they can they can do whatever they want they can print money. And they can buy in the bond market but in terms of the natural rates right. They're going to be set. Why he knows that the Fed is in the Fed can do what ever they want with regard to short or long term rates and now we've seen that in the last ten years most sought starting your back in 2000 you know they they can do what ever this is going to make the Fed far more important because one of the bigger threat that's out there is look if you don't have foreign money coming in to finance the US deficit now. It has to be financed domestically and that means that investors who otherwise would have spent that money either a buying corporate bonds and in growing companies that way. Be buying equities and in trying to grow the economy and in that fashion. Instead they're forced into buying US treasuries to finance the government debt it pulls money away from other investments slows growth and potentially has all kinds of issues what would erode what it means his taxes are grownups and entitlement programs are going down not necessarily. It doesn't necessarily mean about the budget right is that that's what it then what if the answers dollar weakness. In that OK let's say that you need twenty trillion dollars to pay off. The US debt right now we've got you know as to if when he went there if we look at what we're trading act compared to the Chinese currency the won it's about you know six point seven of them. To get to a dollar and what if we weaken the dollar so it's only for you want critic and that seniors eat eat eat what you mean. But they're living on Social Security check you're gonna have rampant inflation when you weaken the dollar gas goes to six bucks again. Yes it does I'm I'm not saying this is going to be easy but that is the solution that we've seen before and it will be the solution that we see again kind of the only way out of the U. Really is it's. And and look in the long term that's something that's good for the US it allows manufacturing to be way more competitive but chuck that is so tough. 170%. Of the American population suffers. I'm if you're an envelop not so asserts that having. In bill and most people don't stock no word when I would with the homeownership the average wage earner is going to benefit tremendously from wage earners yes retirees at all but. Retirees aren't 70% of the population now but they vote today but I'm not I'm not worried about voting I'm worried about makes what makes the difference I get that it's going to be tough for some people. But the last twenty years have been really tough for people manufacturing largely because of dollar strength. I think you're going to see a reversion back towards a weaker dollar because as the only way forward when we get the math to balance out. The data as you can see is inconsistent right signs of strength there's signs of weakness. Do you think the economy is slowing down to participate in our poll by visiting our website that is financial exchange showed dot com and it's exchange showed dot com do you think the economy's slowing down. No. Hi everybody it's Barry Armstrong and Jake two Lian were talking about a program called Z rent. Now this is specifically. Designed for those of you who wore landlords and used to collector checks with paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Will Z rent allows you to collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy grant works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely buried so we we develops he rained two out of me the whole race because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You missing envelope line in the post like you're waiting you might not get all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month furthermore if your landlord on vacation in your race thing you know boxed up to what he does is it leakage though. It makes the rent electronic payments and allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting out to college student salute. It's predictable it comes at the same time every month. And it's all on me. So the landlords who have been using this is in huge time savings and ointment you are you still giving the first six months free for landlords the first six months or free and then in addition to that. If you bank it one of the participating banks he ran is always briefly. Those participating banks are leader batons don't test the up and that any bank could sign up bright and keep you at a bank in Vermont Connecticut. They could sign up and become part is the rent yup you your if you have a community bank that wants to be a member happened Collison will have and sign up and the service will then be free free. All right if you wanna learn more about easy rent. Go to Z rent dot net you can give McAuliffe he wanted 8776917900. How much are you paying for automobile insurance those of you who live in means in Massachusetts. We've hey Tucker thousand bucks a year. Observers him auto insurance yup wake up die a thousand bucks a year Dodd 900 bearish about 64640. The F a from I don't have. Full collision and just because my car's fuel car and I my cars older and I know that. I'm not going to be because an accident I get into one whole room never happened except if it. All right well. Anybody who's driving a car in Massachusetts or Maine. Should be anticipating. Price increases and their insurance of somewhere between four and 6% this according to a chief actuary in the insurance. Name is James Lynch. And he's suggesting it's related to marijuana definitely. It's pretty much what they're saying is the 'cause you have seen legalized marijuana in the states now. What you are likely going to see is increased accidents and because of that you're going to have to know pay more just because obviously insurance companies have to cover those increased accidents. And so we have this is one of those issues that we still don't quite have sorted out when it comes to legalize marijuana in that either no. Easy quick test that shows whether or not someone timing you can you can tell but there's not it's your breath analyzer that you can use right. And B we don't have any way to keep people who are high out of the driver seat and vehicle. So they must know based on what they've seen in other states like cholera outbreak they're probably looking at it and saying hey. The you know week we've got a million insured or where it would edit the population cholera was about four million so they're probably looking at the date. Coming out of Colorado and saying look you legalize candidates in Colorado he was six years ago. What's happened automobile accidents I know they've increased John Rooney told me that the only business stark increase in automobile accident. Yes and in you would. Think that you'll be somewhat off cent but offset by the prevalence of some of these ride sharing companies who burn a little out of sprouted up because I know if if I ever go out and I in if I'm going out message I'm gonna have more than you know from having more than a beer. I'm usually take an AMBER Alert just because it's cheaper than do you want it doesn't make sense to put yourself in like take the risk a white might take the risk. But this date is kind of inconclusive I looked at a couple studies earlier this morning just as I was curious. And some of them say yes as dramatic effect there others say no it's not really making a meaningful impact is now more people go out for drinks that previously would notice that there's more cars on the road. So it's it's the day it is inconclusive on that front. But if you least when it looks when we look specifically at. Legalize marijuana it does seem like you are gonna be seeing higher insurance premiums paid consultant I don't remember that coming up when her voting on the referendum I made the argument will be lower there's people get I don't wanna go anywhere but. Apparently that's not. Case that only not evidently not. Donald Trump steps up his attacks on federal chairman Jerome Powell. Knee you know we've seen this before where presidents have nudged the Fed Bill Clinton did it. George H. W. Bush the Volcker talked yesterday about how while Reagan pushed and also voted yeah. It's it's gone on but I mean the president. Trump is is outlandish in internally keys he say I'm tired this guy air made a mistake. Of tea I I don't think he's doing the right thing. But he hasn't been this blunt and specifically it has been outwardly facing in a lot of cases previously it was a lot of internal pressure in meetings and so forth but doesn't is higher confidence you know when when the president saying now you know I ever regret now nominee too early to say. But maybe I regret nominating mr. now owns this guy he had Janet Yellen who is a confirmed. It just left in general only kept rates low for awhile now and so. I don't know if you say you think she's a little more dovish than I do you know and and as I mean if you want talk about the Altman W talking Bernanke you know prior mean Bernanke Bernanke self professed biggest fear was kind of that double dip recession that we saw after the Great Depression back in the thirties his biggest fear was raising rates too quickly kick its back into man it's a dip I think these guys have got all wrong and he angrily think zero rates were bad -- ebbing now. The people can make two or 3% on the money I think that's a good thing there's more if you look at the interest channel in the amount of interest being repaid. Somebody's getting that interest I think that's a good I think there's a case to be made that zero rates. Worries were bad for as long as they were in effect has been but they were needed initially the I do. Overreaction if you could go under 1% I think at the same net effect. What's what's the difference then and it was Whitney heirs of that candidate you are you do need to egos gone to zero I think with psychological. In cycle we're gonna empty chamber who embody the what you're talking about only negative period but I think in a negative rates I think six I think signaling that was important. And the big number that everyone cares about revenue beat forecasts as well. So free cash those beating expectations. It and news Abu he'd be one of the best performing stocks if not the best before we start the doubt last year. Good news bad news or what exactly is going on there. Bad news but I wouldn't take catastrophic. They are to buck 82 per share which came in line with street forecast earnings. Revenue was a bit short of estimates and they also. Expressed a little bit concerned about terrorists or at least investors are expressing some. Turnabout the the Cherie Paris and how that might impact their proper urged them but overall they reiterated guidance and expressed confidence in the outlook. But nonetheless I investors are pretty worried about trade issues another company I robot actually reported earnings today to and they cited. And the attack is coming largely from a lot of Massachusetts Democrats you've got to Elizabeth Warren Ed Markey Jim McGovern. All saying well we have to stop the sales. Of armaments to Saudi Arabia. What I'm not sure they're taking into consideration. Is that Raytheon which is one of the major. Sales partners to Saudi Arabia employs 121000 people in middle in Massachusetts you think could take that into consideration. Well the they're telling him not to sell and and don't days like we re cans and dude not fire some of those 121000 people. I at day I I don't think I think the question that has to be discussed is at what point do you. But you know again we're we're talking about a regime. That went and went into someone else's sovereign territory and and murdered a journalist who had been critical of the regime. And I understand all that part of the reason stop it it is brazen and and it's wrong and its Saudi Arabia being Saudi Arabia. But. You know for Massachusetts. Democrats to be coming out and end. I wonder they'd be doing the same thing they had if Hillary Clinton was in the off in the White House when they're the ones that are gonna feel the pain. You know it's it's their constituents that make it if it were you know people from you know as some state that does not have. Defense contractors and who were wanting this California that it back to California you know if if or somewhere and get I don't know what state where some state wasn't as reliant on defensive look that I'd say yes it's hypocritical but. They're gonna bear the brunt of the suits it's their constituents that are gonna feel the pain if nothing hat if something happens here. You know do you stop arms sales on this. And no you know it again it that requires a whole bunch of different it calculations to figure out if you do it. But I do think it's something worth discussing at least you know that the threat out there by the way I voted yesterday. I was going to I was too tired mag adding get home until like 730 it was raining it still. You did them I'm trying to go this week. They're fuel costs surged nearly 50%. In the third quarter compared to last year. And that was a report coming out of the airline yesterday. Eating a big chunk out of its bottom line that can only do that for so long to. They eat you know they can only absorb that increase cost in their earnings for so long as some point they're gonna be raising prices and their one of the one of the largest airlines in the country. Yet you've got fuel prices rise for all these airlines and in particular in the northeast jetBlue offers a ton of flights out of the Boston area through Logan. And so if you've been looking around the there's two big reasons why you're seeing. Higher prices for flights as you're number one is neo fuel cost obviously going up. But also there there seems to be much higher demand more people that are looking to travel right now and there's less capacity just us airline economy zero. To be cutting capacity in order to try to maximize profit. Prices continue to rise based on everything that I've seen out there. Our next topic is quantum computing Q and tell people what quantum computing is that not many people that know what it is. Let alone the type of people that work in it which is government. So this is my admittedly basic understanding of quantum computing in traditional computing you have a transistor. They can be in one of two positions on or off and so specifically when we talk about something like code breaking or something like that are blocked chain okay. The premise there is that in order to try all the different permutations of on and off from multiple transistors to trial the different permutations. It takes a really long time to do so because yep say okay transistor one on two off and then you put them both on C have to go through all these different options. A quantum computer does not use transistors. He uses specific. I don't know the exact name of the technology but use I think they're called you know there's something else. And what they use can be in both the on and off position at the same time which is really hard for people to wrap their head around because it's like how can something on and off the same time just. Except that it can be because it can. And so it can be on and off at the same time. And so because of that it can process what previously would have took traditional computers a really long time to do it can in theory process of much more quickly kind of the whole battery addition numbers of these and a holy Grail the island in technologies of I whoever whoever wrote this out. It's it's. Really and put it it'll be the biggest jump since we've had computers you know in terms of just as in. It to be completely honest could render a lot of our current security for the Internet or anything like that pretty much obsolete if you get it to scale just because it could. You break through a lot of this encryption in a pretty quickly if he gets to scales not happening any time soon but if he gets to know certain scale with an computers so. That's the good. Kind of quantum computing not even 101 but quantum computing 99 that's what it is. Cushing and old guy of the month October called Medicaid income trusts. Todd I have to confess the average person. Is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong the need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid. Income trust or an asset protection trust you know bear I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical then and and people aren't gonna know one way or another so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. To winning est plane via taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court we can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up and I door all the time. Also make sure on their car when you get their card to use the letters LLM after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you zoo unfortunately that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know one you wanna have a flat feet. Right when note it's gonna cut you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. We talked a little bit about quantum computing at the end of our last segment joining us now from New York Times this tape Mets. Can talk about why there's a talent shortage that's developing. With regards to quantum computing Kate thanks for joining us today. Here it's so we went kind of into the basics of quantum computing which my understanding is fairly limited. A cure is where where's the bottleneck what kind of bottleneck is developing as far as people who were able to research this kind of technology. Well just fundamentally there are limited number of people on her you know how to do if it's not me correct has. If exactly not mean you. And you know it is that she a product of the fact that this is still experimental technology. And it is very different than the types of machines that we have built as a society. I'm for the past several decades. It just fundamentally uses different techniques. And and we're only at the earliest stages. I'm really getting the point where we can build a practical machine in this clip. And the reality of it is so a lot of this talent. It's if not in the US it's its overseas. And for anyone whether you're working. Here in the U efforts or you're working in China. Wherever else. You know as it is beside the comes to the fore and as you have some of the biggest companies. Let alone the biggest government summer trying to build the technology. There is going to be a limited pool of talent they can and. So in terms of I guess there's two separate questions. Question number one are there any policies in place right now in the US that are making it more difficult. For either companies and universities to attract talent that specializes in quantum computing. Well that and that the broader issue not just with quantum computing. But with all sorts of areas. But technology. You know traditionally. Police over the past several deck in the at the US has proven. Heavily from from overseas when it comes to. Number tree view for universities as well company in the areas of technology. And what we've seen recently one example that the area. Call part of it tell you. For various historical reasons a lot of this talent. What and other places. In the nerve to Canada for a specific you'd senator. The top talent in that area as well as Europe and other places. And well you know where you basically he's. It is it's kind of effect where. These are researchers. Are more wary of coming to the US I'm more aware of Spain in the US. We can be harder to recruit. Just because of changes in immigration policy. So this kind of a chilling effect that it affects some people and and and whether or not they want the com. There's also the issue of immigration and you know we've seen that in in derby when it weighs recently. There was a study from the national physical society. Which looked at the enrollment. In physics programs across the country and there was a 12% drop. Applicants for my overseas. To Pittsburgh and the US to one year. And and so there were areas that will that will continue as time goes on and and the number it will continue to crop in the top academic programs. And in their of course there's a knock on affect the industry. What about specifically with what either the US or other countries are doing to try to attract specifically. Quantum computing researchers where things stand on that front. Well. No I look at it in the east this week in the time to accompany all the auto. Computing they're based in Cambridge. They're one of the companies that trying to gala. Decide the industry and that it didn't gonna happen. Even though this is experiment cup technology is gonna happen pretty quickly over the next few years. Pursuing the biggest companies on earth as well as startups like this. Trying to commercialize. Yeah and the plot. And as recently hired or hurt the least extended job offers. To three different people who were born overseas and they've waited for several months. To. To receive notice that the current State Department that he is in new potential employees there receive B says the income come to work and it yet to receive. Those pieces and then. It's just indicative of a larger concern among companies like. It's just we're gonna become murder. I'm accustomed to the talent spread across the globe to include. Are good Kate thank you for joining us today we appreciate the time. I Cade Metz from the New York Times talk about the tech talent shortages it relates to quantum computing you know he's always been two sides to that argument. The you know you had a lot of tech workers that would come in from India and Pakistan. And if you talk to American tech workers they'd say well they're depressing wages and because they've got coming in in the U willing to work for 65 thousands that it nine. In this particular case though. You're talking about a very finite group and you guys didn't mention this but eat your your talking about the kids at school work perfect on their Mathis he tees that that there's just. The very blunt about these are. Yet highly intelligent and gifted. Math students yet these are. Effectively the brightest of the bright and not only that they've chosen to specialize in a very narrow field it's not something. Where you can easily transition into quantum computing you know the problem is that companies that pot. The human right yep the they want to hire these three young people who are I. Guarantee you're gifted. Now the investors in a pod it's a start up are saying. Well geez if we can't higher than here. Let's take them up to Montreal to open an office in Montreal let's open an office in Tora let's open an office in Paris London where we eat. It wherever the immigration policies you know more relaxed the problem is that's creating a Braintree we educate these kids and MIT we educate these kids at Harvard northeastern U and then we say get the hell out. Maybe he doesn't quite make sense does well there's a lot of people we don't want it. Right maturities of the kids that we don't want it or if it's it's just you if you look at this again you you have people who were being educated here and and money wants to keep these people here. Big money but it's just the way the system is set up their non don't want to navigated you don't want to lose that technology. That B I don't understand fully quantum. That's a sin on techno and understands having me on and off the same I don't. But I do know that hates me because dim if he talked to people in that field they will tell you. Whoever wins that war is whoever's the first to figure nano has a lot of power. Bonnet and in in a book and finally remembered what the name of though little instead of transistors Calder called. Not Cuba it's QU BIT yes that's that's the term for the and right now that is the basic quantum computers that are available. It SA available there's like. Half dozen in the world there are many of these things. They can do really basic things is there just aren't that they've been able later many of these bits back to back to back it's it's a case of pay when you get to the point were you able to build something that you know operates. More efficiently. Against stuff is as. You know critical to our infrastructure as the encryption that we have through for the unit and things like that. It could all be. Potentially overwhelmed by this new technology. We began the show with a demonstration of inconsistent economic data. So the economic data is really strong so that is not strong like housing sales this morning very poor number there. He economic data. That we are receiving even the corporate earnings data that we're receiving is inconsistent on one hand you have. Tremendous. Demonstrations of strength in the economy but they need get a hold new home sales numbers like we got this morning about an hour ago. When there are down five and a half percent. Which is much more than what we have anticipated. The market gets confused and as a consequence. The Dow was down a hundred in 94 points the NASDAQ down even more it's down. Well heck one point 3% and the S&P is twenty point tiger body it's Berrian truck with you here to Wednesday morning in. You know markets are down with a 56%. From their to their pot. They're tough not to go to the S&P we've gone from about twenty now name who wears the hi there I'm just trying to pull up. You would go threat 2940. Down to 2723. Close that either 9% and it's you had a pretty good pulled from the get exact number. In terms of the equity prices but then. You know you look at Boeing seven and a half and it Boeing had strong numbers this just. It in and people feel strongly that consumer. Feel strong we have a poll today. And we asked the question do you think the economy's slowing down. Vast majority. Of our audience 75 point 8% truck makes it that the economy's getting stronger not weaker. So sentiment is very possible. I'm on the opposite side that trade you think things are getting a little weaker I do woody here would tell us which. Scares you out they would bothers me is housing if no new home sales are down five and a half percent housing is what 1011% of the economy. Big chunk you know it's who when I look at what what makes me nervous out there. You've got both housing and auto sales that have real questions are point out and going forward not days it not question marketed their bat. Question mark you know. They ought photo doing badly the market would go to the answer. It we know we know auto sales are bad we know new home sales are yes or you'll get those both of them aren't good. I would give what we're getting from guidance from. Which every company but bones bones out wire right now but just about every other company out there when they talk about what they see going forward. The talking about their margins being compressed because of increased costs for goods and labor just about anything else. You know it's it's a case where you have those costs going up but you have key drivers of the US economy and autos and housing that are weakening. And get I've been on this for six months or maybe it's confirmation bias on my part maybe on two invested in this outcome. But he feels like stagflation. As we go out twelve to eighteen months. While we invite you to participate in our poll do you think the economy's slowing down now at 76 point 6% means. Think the economy's heating up 23%. Think it's gone. You're up to be very helpful to me in this next segments and to defer to our producer mr. Corso all right in my financial expert care if it has to term Mike with with Dunkin' Donuts and and Starbucks yup. Duncan. Use it's a Dunkin' Donuts and stomped to the d.s I know on them. You dunks in a dumpster donkeys. Vertical these donkeys preferably but it. Dear they're coming out with the role in premium coffees like the express those. Days yeah and there are going to be cheaper significantly less expensive. Then star girls are up significantly. Sixty cents 30% point percent fifty cents sixty cents on sorry it's more cents three or nine verse 419. Sixty cents. That's kind of what edges of the that's that's a significant about this is it really significant. All well if they're better if they taste that we go to Doug's as opposed to starts estate taste better yet. You buy those countries in architecture by once in awhile I mean I'm buying is like the Nolan consumer got my new cars and buy new clothes really easy guy he shops at the salvation his Hendrick do you find great stuff I know him personally stuff science I mean you know drink coffee anyway struck so now hopefully I told him he can't participate I'm tortures if you actually I don't buy off the adults worst job and make mile but you do that 90% of the time I'm getting just a regular oral coffee not ma Starbucks correct spot want to while dabble in a latte here and there are America on I'll actually get more frequently the watches are status it's espresso and water. It's very European but all star. Yes only those drinks yes and you would not consider movement over the dogs. You have to be really good album or. Much better than Starbucks and I don't think they will get to that point. That type of coffee to. The there they're revamping all the stores if you talk the franchise owners they're spending. Fortune you know or I'd destroy their stores so many of this book stores are a little on the dinghies we just speak disparagingly about the you know here don't you at a rundown look at the current and I noted they're revamping crumple looked at the equipment today. It does no you know China espresso machine like you're gonna see it start models that department. And if they're gonna be the same machines a Starbucks uses then. I'll try it alternately trying to put again I don't know how strong or better quality that coffee's going to be dumped him. There has to Aurilia espresso latte stuff it's probably got to be a little bit better in order for them eat and start. They equally as deftly as did our call it's got I don't think they can do that one and older in your head very scoff. Looks yeah that's coffee there which normally disperse. Express those different Ike I'm on a bet on dogs here I don't own their stock but I'm actually thinking about buying. I have been impressed with what they've they've done they've acknowledged that their menu Sox. And you know their date they're coming out with better mobile application deals and better. Deals in the afternoon in a channel two for six stuff the consensus is they have to do something about their physical locations. To make them because if you drive guy. A Starbucks it's a meeting place people will say while meet at the Starbucks on third avenue. And and they'll just go go in though they'll have their business. To replace to meet I would never have a meeting right now only add to it and it don't never pitches basic you know tables and chairs and you know start to feel like you're in a nice environment hours don't commute don't want us data whatsoever just wanted to help. This past year you're going there for the product through other for crying policy. The convenience and 80%. He'd turn checked by now I think we're ozark. And I think what part of the problem might be. You you look at the average size of a dump in store. Hall of their big enough to do that much which Gator right disease storefront. And it's it all yet time all you Israel is to maximize sales you know they're out there are some decent sized Duncan's but for the most burger truck they're they're small subtle but let's remember something. Deere is a surplus that retail space. True yeah be the thing about all of the retailers that are going under they go into a seers that a daily space that you can go into any mall in Americans say hey. We currently rent. 3000 feet from them we want how hard do you think it is for dunks to expand there. Footprint from 3008000. In you look at a Starbucks Starbucks. But different. He's probably the an assay. Three to 5000 feet. You know in terms total 400 of the of the of the store seems like they're bigger in the city to. Yeah and so how hard is it bird for dogs to do that lever I don't like Serena went. Question that I have there is in this has been an occurrence in the last. Decade I'd say. There's a lot more Duncan's that it popped up inside of gas stations and things like that all of us tolerable daily they're all over the place so they don't even have their loans like there's nowhere you can sit and just simple ought to her you know so. I do we have to change their model yet if they wanna compete it's it has to be more than just new drinks if they want this to work best to be. Well we've got to build a place that people can actually have these entry now that I I. I think the company has to go through a transformation but I think Starbucks is right absolutely ripe for some competition. Yeah I I would agree that artery if that'd documenting den net space then you're gonna see. You're gonna see more competition from him on top margin business though. Via its it's a lot of humans yup you would be it's it's a lot for him as Douglas yeah I mean at the end of the Dave Duncan needs to overhaul their restaurants you know. To make him more inviting we'll see you plain and simple we will see Lucy don't bet against dunks that's my advice UPS had a good quarter. They did have a good quarter they you know they came in with pretty decent earnings but unfortunately in this market right now pretty decent is really getting a whole lot of accolades as stock honor and from the market the stock is off about three and a half percent after this. And it's it's a case where simply meeting your expectations isn't enough in this market right now. Dated 20% rise in quarterly profit compared to a year ago largely on the back of a whole bunch of tax savings the tax bill was nearly halved. From what it was a year ago. They continue to see good package volume. Their package services were up eight point 1% for the third quarter so revenues moving along nicely there. You know it's it's the company is is doing well. Mean. Well isn't good enough in this market right now now do you look at the stock hasn't done if you look at that stock. Down for the year down about 10% for the year. That's. Or we're in the next thing we're going to be talking about oil. Oil prices dropped yesterday their puppets had today we'll explain why had a big decline in oil prices in our next segment. Off with the oil well that throw wanna talk about what had big movie. It did it was down about 4%. In the the thought is that this is tied to the saudis saying hey we might go towards higher output. But they did and they increased by 300000. Again who knows how long they keep it so I I take everything with oil with not just a grain of Salt Lake a whole shaker to move in this point. I remember two weeks ago all the chatter was well oil's going to a hundred or 120 in in you know it's just. I I always find that the people who try to portray themselves as an expert on oil. Or any other commodity. They usually writes his sick thing though with golden mean you look at the guys are idle koppers gonna do this and yes it's I had just I just. I thought I don't get good feelings out of you know commodity predictions in general and so go to 4% decline is good for or. Those of us in the northeast he is absolutely is looking got oil Floridians and friends could careless not to carry the they don't turn on. No no they really don't have to move through it. It too much and it's called a little little touch here and there. But what you see here begin your off almost we have thirteen 14% from the highs that we saw a couple weeks back. And so eventually that should make its way somewhat into gas prices. The as far as what we're seeing nationally right now. At this point where 284 nationally and in a month ago we are to 85 so we're down one cent from a month ago. You'd expect to see this tickets down somewhere in the high 270s in maybe two to 3% dip. Just because look they never pass all the dip through the U. But it does he get back down into the 270s so it 23 maybe 4% coming down. Which just helps a little bit as a heading into the Thanksgiving travel season. Our show would not be complete if we didn't talk about mr. mosque and Tesla Tesla shares rally big time. Yet as a shares rallying on the back a couple different pieces of news one you had a former short seller who announced that he was long in the position even though we still suing the company which is. Just a great situation let's talk about the he may be long the stock because he had to buy. It speeds here if it's very possible they got that's you have to remember about that trot they make so many bad bets that you are now and then have to cover. And so you had that going on there but they're also Tesla moved up their third quarter earnings. By anywhere either we're gonna report sometime in the next couple weeks. Givers at have you ever heard that before the company says over a reporter. I remember I do think we do is show every day I don't remember ever saying or GE's and reporter early GM's gonna reporter early. And never reported being always on time. The only case I've seen his virtue a kind of reports whenever they want like they usually dumped on Friday afternoon there's like oh by the way here's earnings do something with this open this Saturday to get a really good Berkshire's kinda like. And whatever agreed to their meetings yeah. So that's soreness get in this case it probably signals and the reason why the stock got bit up and why would you move your earnings up if their bones. You know you would while he gets you more attention. And if so to move but a lot if they're not gonna be or a lie a lot more attention I agree I agree you move them up. Because one you're gonna get the surprise which the you know I think what we should anticipate news. It'll be it I think he had three quarters that are profitable this note they had to do this would be their third to have their fifteen years old right. In the days so if they're fifteen years old that means it reported sixty quarters and they had to Wear their profit. To court. Strong percentage this way this would increase that by 50% in our so it's it's it's big for them if they can get there. I think for me they're they're couple questions that need to be answered coming out of this number one. On the conference call is Elon Musk the adult in the room you know what's you know what what we have coming from him number two are we gonna get any guidance as to who was gonna be coming in to supervise you on to they give us any. You know idea who's going to be coming as the new chairman. If you're like hey I'm laughing because it's it's almost comical that they. Get with you were when he billion the whole mobile and I know he's worked when he zillion dollars but he requires a baby sitter. We shall we saw walking. And the third question that I I still have about this is there they're expected to be producing somewhere in the ballpark the talkback quarterly vehicles that they are producing. It's gonna be somewhere in the ballpark of probably. 66000. Of the model threes in this quarter. They had firm orders not forwards that orders for about four to 500000 of these after this quarter they will have gotten through somewhere about a quarter. So my question is. They still have a capable backlog it's gonna take him out not just through the next two or three quarters and they have been reported that no they haven't because. There's no luxury carmaker that sells 400000 of any sedan today. So I've always said look I think I'll be able to sell that 400000. But what's that when when we get to equilibrium. How many of them innocently years to get a B 50200. To wonder if they bring the price down to even the let's assume they're never gonna get the price down there let's put it by the would you see what happened with the latest unveil and so last week you on mosques and hey here's new 45000 dollar option that we have yesterday they raise the price to 46. My my question knows truck is. Do they come out if 40000 dollars a vehicle I mean the average Americans abandon 35 they'll 37000. Car now yeah. So why that's the next three and yet that's as they don't want small sedan. They're not buying stance it's not a body type people want. They gets the Tesla is doubling down not a great looking car either it just in my. Opinion all out till you know there this just again anecdotally they are someone who had a model three got a crash was the right. The time for to be repaired was going to be like eight weeks it is you know it takes forever to get these cars repaired they put the thing up on eBay rather than trying to repair. Then there's that local to sell for 33000 the main it's going to be you know fifteen grand get repaired. Like it tells you they still have issues logistical. We'll have the answer and the winner of our trivia contest of your turn the Dow was down 236. Points. Regarding retirement income and chuck it strikes me you know we go to work every day we put money into our 401K plans typically it's going into. Mutual funds or exchange traded funds that we're using to accumulate wealth during our working yours are high earning years. That whole equation changes once we retire and we hit age 6570. And we say cheeks and a gun I need to take some income from powerful. Yeah it it really does change and specifically war go to Morgan income generation mindset and it's difficult today because if you look at a lot of the ways that people historically did that CDs yielding 5%. Bonds yielding five or 6% her you don't have those tools available anymore seat need to make sure that you're still adapting your portfolio to the new demands of retirement. But you need to make sure that using the right instruments and so that can be combination of dividend paying stocks. It can be equities that you simply think gonna grow and pull little principal off there as well last in the right mix of bonds they can generate some income as well. What about municipal bonds at something to people years. It is of particular fewer in a high income bracket it's something that a lot of people use that we tend to target simply because the tax efficiencies you gain there can be significant if he'd like it. You can book your holiday party today get a special gift for all you weren't. When you look at the stock market. It's down I'm gonna say 80% might be even a half of 97 but its biggest BS and 500 down around 8%. From tot. And generally leads the way I was trained folks a declining stock market is. An indicator that the economy is slowing he if you if this stock market goes down it means that. You know the way I was trained anyway six to eighteen months from now you're gonna see at an economy that is slowing down. We have a pull questions now in our audience is going be exact opposite direction of the stock market and our poll question is do you think the economy slowing down 72. About 73% of our listeners. Think the economy is not slowing down. 27%. Think it is slowing down and you can participate in our poll by the way by visiting financial exchange showed dot com who's right chuck. Stock market all of these Smart investors of billions of dollars or our listeners. There's one the other. So I'm on the side of the market I think there's some slowing that's happening here. What's important to note okay historically on average if you go back to 1928. They're their calculations that been run by a company called bespoke investment group. And historically. 10% market corrections happen once every sixteen or seventeen months so what we're seeing now. They get 8% dip in that doesn't mean you go into recession bowl and even. It's. More importantly when we're talking about what it means for someone's money here and think about how infrequently you actually go into a bear market. OK if we are targets Tony bear market is 820%. Or bigger dip okay. We had one back in the thirties now okay that was an 83% dip. Not really so hot. There was one in the 1940s after World War II about a 22% dip there was one in the early 1922%. One in the late sixties one in the early seventies one in the mid eighties and then a couple in the 2000 so okay. But while you have a 10% or bigger dip. Every sixteen to seventeen months on average. If you go back through most of the twentieth century it 1234567. Only eight true bear markets OK so those ten happened yet every ten years or so. On average it's not something that it's not like clockwork he can go fifteen years between you can go three years between. But just because you have a correction doesn't mean it turns into a bear market. Bear market separate corrections happened because people are afraid that the economy is slowing down in bear market happened when the economy does slow down. And it looks like it's on now it looks like it is so there's again that's the the you've got to get nervous and say what what I didn't like and these these are the numbers that. The thing that gives me solace. Is I don't see. Any tremendous bubbles. In terms of landing. Yeah I know I don't see the banks. Making absurd loans now maybe they're making them and I just don't see them but it. A look at home homeownership. And in the way mortgages are being underwritten and even auto loans being underwritten it being underwritten with some. You don't see anything crazy on the lending side I mean again you know it's it's something where you could have a a small lending bubble that's there but. It's not given no income no lasted verification loans for 110%. The value of a home you're not seeing that kind of stuff. In this cycle here. But look you don't need to see that kind of stuff for to still be you know painful for a short period of time not every recession turns into the great. Recession. Overeat is expanding. And their objective is to cover 70%. Of the US population one of the big knocks on the east food service. Providers I've tried the Amazon one and overeat and become are about where I live and I guess they built it. Now now the in in midfield. I mean use that sort here Yemen what I get yeah I do I act boy I don't know if I get all on but I get it's Rob Hall in Westwood. And so I get at least one of them well received by get over it's actually just because I'm curious. Just see if there you know how far out they end up going as they wanna go big time. The they wanna be a national player in this business and burrito I guess I get a greets if you look at the fundamentals of luxury in terms of march and and make a lot more money on this than they do on the drive and people do they mean more to the drivers and maybe it's just the drivers and it's more labor intensive but the if you look at the FISA over the weekend. When my friends on FaceBook news mean. What's his name. He he sent me all the details his actress to via my assumption no authority he sent me all the deets on and terms of the the delivery in late in a couple of hours economic 120 bucks hustled around on it and and deliver you you must have granddaughters talked medal Dietz. And I do I am very hip I I am I what you remember it. I am. So anyway AD maneuvered to the studio bottom line. Senator maybe they'll check your home. Was seems pretty those couple years. God heard our. That's outstanding Lockheed Martin. Eyes higher sales. You know with all these military sales and armaments spending makes you think we're headed towards a eventually all these you know jets and guns that were zone or get used to use them right yeah yeah campaign forum and use them. Well of but if check operating the story that would certainly be the case. But when we take a look at what Lockheed Marten guided here they forecast revenue would be up 7%. In 2019 from the 53 billion dollars to projecting to bring in this year and sales in its largely on the back of boosted production and missiles and the F 35 combat. Jet and so that's what they are guiding towards at this point. It's largely on the back of again increased defense spending not only in the US but also internationally. And so it does seem to be a pretty good time to be a defense contractor. Folks over 20% of Americans. You know it's nice to see Amazon getting a little bit competition. Wal-Mart. Really you know pulling out all the stops to compete with that Amazon but a big target has a different approach that might be more effective in the long term. Would they are doing is they're doing the free shipping things like Wal-Mart. But they're turning their stores they're converting your stores and distribution hubs ten years ago. I said that Wal-Mart joyous UB ten years and I've been on yeah you've been given on Wal-Mart for not doing this for awhile mean they stuck their head in the sand and they said no people still shop when they are wrong. And so what you're seeing here is target now while fulfills that 50% of its digital orders at its stores and plans to fill over 90% of these two day shipping orders from the stores as well so they're really taking advantage of this no way. That as you mentioned. Wal-Mart hasn't. And Wal-Mart has more stores. The William Moore stores they got more customers are mean what exactly you are bigger company they could've used all their stores as miniature warehouse and they didn't. It's be it it's so interesting just how a company like that. Can just have their head in the sand as as as you put it's it's just amazing in target could post a target and not something we're about Wal-Mart didn't even have to do any major investment in any it was just what you just have to figure out late changer inventories it's a little bit instead they sent spend a fortune. On this curbside pick. Which I think is not observe it like to do what's the point. Eight X I say that but my father uses. So yeah I'd like I'm critical of it that I would use it but he does so I I editing. I I I am if I were to buy shares in byways in his own shares. Very quietly on 300 bucks. You know I know we have here they peaked at 2050. And they are down trading at 1738. Down 31 box today I bought back in a little bit actually via I've been out for awhile but in the interest of disposing I bought back in. Which pack I think it was in the Little League team somewhere in the ballpark. Somewhere around there I know exactly where it's good for the Amazon to have competition. And I hoped target and Wal-Mart if they can even. You know get up 1015%. Is that that's all. You need you need something to keep in assailant on us and and unfortunately Amazon needs to be kept on this is. Known to play around. But it's a better landing spot and 1000 dollars and it includes basically all the things that the High Court and it. Which I think that those extras being more like bells and whistles. And features like a better quality display the article really hard time noticing every day use. I think the display on the Paris great. You expose it takes a great. Pattern like that actually better than the others. And it's that there optional. Where does the ten our feet in size wise with the other new phones is the same as the big one same as the small one or something completely different. Dumping right in the battle that there weren't at that site differences but that Patrick at stake here because if you if you want a smaller town this is not going to be that pretty. But if you're looking at something like the last or the and it Mac it's a little smaller and outlined I think battered by hand. But it still is enough but you'll big screen size it's not it not much if any he resolutions appear right. That's to keep that in mind but it's buying the expo everything else but in the of them everything looks fine to the eyes. So I would get to a spectacle back but besides that he'll get cold but happy the recent iphones have been a little bit heavier I don't mind that. In terms of storage whipped out what different storage sizes are available with the ten are. And what's the cost difference between them. Sherrill apple has not been introduced as starting mild across the. As what you want it on stepped aboard the start of 64 gigabyte. Percent and 49 there is where it's very manageable but it it's maybe not yet you'll pick it up. There's a 128 day in the middle fifty dollars more I think that's the sweet spot and that's a little doubt that apple doesn't offer on the other side. There's there's 256 gigabyte for eve 1990. I don't think you'll be bad but it there are people really wanna go to I'd expect 128 is the one yet. And it 800 dollars it's not a terrible place to eat or the other out of it. You mentioned that there's some camera differences between the ten. How big are those differences is the average user gonna actually noticed them. Yeah I don't think ever users you know that they have. That front facing camera exactly the same and at. The rear camera the wide angle camera is the thing the whipping its nit thing. Is that second telephoto camera apple out but that two X optical view it does matter here raining voter it. That's a fine but I'll also helped out there. Blown up digital you seem a little less equally up portrait mode is also available on the Antar with one line like Google axle greed does. It's a more limited feature. In the pixel three only works of people. And it's a little more wide angle shot but it actually looks nice. And the voters I'd take it apart a bit more think that they didn't delicate and videotape does the same as well so I think for most people to be really happy with. In terms of who makes sense to it I guess who would upgrade to this phone. I'm using an iPhone six that's four years old my guess is I'd see a significant difference but let's say someone bought an iPhone. What kind of different are they seeing don't do this phone. It's great question I could but the price its own I think you should upgrade let Austin LP it's in every one or two year thing and not important at. And note that I thought he'd get beat you're fine. At the advantages to the and art are more incremental. At a plant now has a very and as a possible I want. Etiquette recovered from earlier on the back lot advantages some of those after the performance immaculate camera quality. Also extra features that start at out things like wire urging which you might want or are water resistance began before the iphones that it. They don't even have that the durability is don't be getting a little better you've been evident dropped at the carpet and at. Actually handled surprisingly well though partner at the last eight per unit dropped pass by. On all those things the reason my little edit I mean I owed evident earlier of the want to take a look at it. Outstanding Scott we appreciate you were coming on what the state thanks for the info on this. Court at Scott Stein from CNET talking about the iPhone ten or me you know they eat. I have a sense and so according Scott I should upgrade jam I have a six and chuck says as a sex you guys really should. And ye hear you're you're sitting on pulls it away three years old four years old four years old I don't know chucked the second battery. Yes. I think Italians auditorium box or I just keep getting free phones because I keep raking the screen and every time they tell me they can't replace the screen in the give me a new phones so. And its total to six but I'm on my third six now. Which I I I wasn't convinced like I I just put in new battery in my 7 plus I am not upgrading I I love that have you held a new phone. And soon get a life your wife like has actually don't like he told sleeping. In the he is called touch screen that every phone is no it's it's different if the if the player around the ten it's a pain this off for your whole unit with the new way you opened it yet. He'll just like well now is she likes so he's probably just a matter of user error in getting used to some dead yeah that most of it I'd ice I would I'm not ready. I just put new battery in mines on goal and at least another year before the green and at least. Market's down but not as much as it was earlier. Earlier we had the Dow down a couple hundred points for now the Dow only down 73 point NASDAQ down 82 points or some money. Isn't that much and you know market recover at some point price of oil.
