This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Berry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Homeowners are sitting on a record amount of equity so if you own a house congratulations evidently housing prices have gone up so much. That we're sitting collectively and about fourteen point four trillion dollars of well. In addition to that chuck and I want it to announce an talkers well. The big announcement we we won the and Megan millions I told you know who's just we won 24 dollars a senators again I'm. 210 dollar investment. As a collectible office and the return. We money 24 dollars net or groups. DB and growth. Were up if you ask me well no we didn't lose everything we know we we you lose everything so with big question is what do we do it or when you go you go right general little guy doubled down yeah Donald I mean you're at where you learn how well the shouldn't be long form broke that a problem as we can double the amount we can't double down. Certain we don't have the original investment in its. Walled weekend you re yup your original investments doubled I do everybody else Everett there isn't 110 dollars and all about a note on a double down crazy this is how this is how addiction problems start anyway. We we didn't we did win. I'm quite proud of that. 44 dollars that we each get a dollar right. Mean Richard buy some serious health problem and on down the big problems that we need change in order to get everyone now in dollars so it actually certainly a factor in the cost of gas to go and get chains like. It might actually be like 95 cents young person at any rate. We're still here despite her winning the Mankins. With untapped home equity at an all time high fourteen point four trillion dollars. Homeowners could be poised to cashing in this is according to new research that was done by CNBC. And I think it's different this time I I think there're enough scars. Anytime you say those words I start to get nervous Zia and any time someone says go with different design gives you hear that break right when you know things start to get good that's that's when you hear that oh it's different this time out this can go on forever like. You remember back in that the best example I think was in the late ninety's. And it was the cover of it was I can't remember to view the economist at Newsweek or time or something like that. And they came out with the the title of it was the end of history and on the cover. And I'm pulling up the image announced they have want to see. Who was actually on there. Now but it was like 3 central bankers that were on their innate argued hey we've we've finally gotten the point. Where were not going to have war anymore were knocked it have recessions Al Gore and sure enough immediately after that everything kind of fell partner. So. I I just looked at you know whatever people's it's. Different this time it's different why do you think people happened there they they always do that let me just to share with you why don't think it well. I think one. There was a real learning curve that occurred after 2008 because he has stock market crash and had housing crash in people. Certainly my generation were scarred from. The week we are it we we saw our friends having to go back to work weeks are friends saying to the kids could go back to college next semester. We we saw marriages break up big news news and emotionally scarring time and when he actually scary time for Americans. At least older Americans people over in their forties and fifties still haven't recovered. For from that no and and now. The tax law changes I'll tell you what from from the standpoint when my perspective when I'm talking to a client. I can't remember the last Thomas suggested that the Tappan of their home equity used to. The big thing that I think that that I come back to one on something like this. When he human history have humans ever not borrowed as much as physically pot belly is only available to and it's it's it's how big but don't think it changes in the tax on with change that behavior and now. No no no one looked at home equity alliance analogy like it's deductible so we'll do this it was hey I need this money away and great it's tax deductible so it's another benefit. Queries good point because credit card debt that you guys are too young to remember that. But back in the 1980s. The interest on your credit card in the interest on your car loan was taxed at a denote that now. Didn't know that and so you EU could deduct it back then and then they got rid of that and you know what. Credit card debt kept going up and car loan rate it leading change. Behavior yet it's you know that the tax law change it might have in effect this year or next year to short term as people sort that mountain but it's not have a meaningful long term impact is easy you can't change human behavior over the long term now with something like that lake it'll reset to zero after next year in terms of kind of hate this the new normal. And then it's G I do need to by a new car it's just tap the equity line line on you late rates again and I knew you wanted. Use your home equity linked to say you and your wife decide already use or home equity by car. At 6% interest why couldn't you get a better loan rate that on a car depends on your credit quality in some cases it can you know if you've got really good credit you might be able to get. You know better rate but keep in line a lot of those teaser rates where they say college you know zero money down and 0% interest for sixty months. Yeah that's if you've got the best credit there an awful lot of people that don't necessarily have the best credit so. I think you know when we talk about the higher rates I think that he is going to be something in the short term that does have an impact is people are gonna look at that and say. Gee it's it's really expensive now and I was looking. At my equity line that I have on my house and just because of how was set up and outs tied it seven and a quarter percent and Alex you know. I'm not so that's that's something you'd uses a last resort. Exactly you know I have no desire to tap that put that that's again my personal perspective I realized that I'm not necessarily. This the same person that someone you know who's listening to that of the show yet they're not behaving the same way I do necessarily so. I look at it in my my general point of view when it comes to debt. Is if you give human beings the capacity to take debt Al. They will take. 44%. Of homeowners between the ages of sixty and seventy. Who have outstanding mortgage debt anticipates still having some mortgage debt when they retire. Didn't used to beat me eat you'd windy you would not dare retire in the old days you would not dare retire with a mortgage that was like. You have to get rid of the mortgage before you retire. Not so much anymore. Do you think it was easier 2030 years ago we combination of home prices in columns gains. You know just general view principles you it was easier to retire without a mortgage in the seventies ariz. I think people live in within their means to a different degree you look at the older generation the you know that the you know the difference is that they generate a principles I guess though like it does and that's you know that's right I come back to the emotional scarring of 2008. You know forty years ago chucked the people that were paying off their mortgages before they retired yet were children of the depression. And and they had eight different mindset they grew up in the forties and fifties in all they heard about. Was a Great Depression when unemployment was 25%. And everybody was losing their house. It psychologically. They were trained to pay off your mortgage is quickly weekend. Now heck nobody pays off the port people die with market. In in I do think you may be onto something there for at least for that each of my my age group what we're Tucker and I are. I think our age group has had really negative experiences with debt and also that each group is young enough to be able to make change in behavior. Oh over thirty to forty year time period to change where things are going I think for Generation X. I think for the boomers. I I don't think you're seeing any meaningful change in behavior that's no I I like a lot of my friends still on board it is our poll question today. Is do you still have a mortgage. An air or do you think that you will have a mortgage when you retire and if you are already retired. Just in its interests honestly do you still carry a mortgage on your house Steve you're you're 72 years old. You've been retired for six years. He still carrying a 300000. Dollar mortgage or home equity line of credit that that's the other thing seat time is. Lot of people use home equity as. And their lines of credit in retirement yours so woo we'll see with the answers about. We are talking earlier about Mega Millions can be one point six billion so we bought tickets per billion would we be buying tickets for one. You fix on me and and keep in mind that one point six I think is gonna go up before the the jackpot is is revealed to is that weekly. You'd make notes twice a week it's it's Tuesdays and Fridays I believe you and then powerball I think it's Wednesday and Thursday powerball by the way still has not being one either. And that's now to 620 Milledge to get 2.2 billion dollars now up for grabs on these two jackpot here. The I did the math the other day though so the odds on the Mega Millions are so bad it's one in 300 in two million dollars right when it when it 302 million. Do you think about yeah puts in perspective if you buy twenty million dollars worth of tickets. You have a 1% chance of winning your odds are still terrible you know if that's your at a M are re. It's still term. Tucker's taking his draft kings losses and rolling the motor into Mega Millions and he's he's taken hopefully he's not taking your home down payment fund and putting hope in the world that but what is exactly his wife is as block that. A count up the how nice house you'd be able to buy for one point six billion dollars pounds when I look at it. And I don't know so one point six and so they'll be drawing tomorrow night it's it's going to be tomorrow night one point six by the way the funny thing on this. So you drive past any of the stores that have the Mega Millions. Indian it was the jackpot and say here's how much is available. It can at least how much is available is always has three digits. Insurgents every single what does 999 million dollars of it doesn't actually say one point six billion it the system is not built deal with it. We suckers are born every minute. Faith coming back or talk about rolling blackouts in New England is that something we have to worry about going forward John just go from the Boston Globe wrote an article that. Designed for those of you who wore landlords and used to collector checks with paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Will Z rent a allows you to collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy grant works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely buried so we we develops you rain to automate the whole race because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You're missing envelope line in the post like you're waiting you might not get all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month furthermore if your landlord on vacation in your racing your notebooks up to what he does is it really gauge bill. It makes the rent electronic payments and allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting at the college student absolutely. It's predictable it comes at the same time every month. And it's all on me. So the landlords who have been using this it's a huge time savings and ornaments you are you still giving the first six months free for landlords the first six months or free and then in addition to that. Talking about debt in retirement 774. Asked the question. Berry is a reverse mortgage a bad idea. And I will tell you have had a variety of experiences with reversed or just some of them less favorable than others. But back in 2009. Chuck I remember people. You know the they lost a lot of money in the market they lost their job. And they used reverse mortgages. To stay in their home because otherwise you're gonna have to sell their house in two. Nine yeah and there's there's certain situations were reversed mortgages can work for some analysts say that EU maybe you don't have kids you don't have anyone in your past the property on and you say. Geez that's something I could build as part of my strategy you you certainly could. And I do think if you look at the fees on reverse mortgages in the way that there at their hot now. They're high but they're all better than they were before and you go back 1015 years ago. And the cost was ridiculous on a lot of them so it's not something that I typically see a lot of people using it typically want to see a lot of people using. But it can work in certain situations I've seen it used effectively were bad things happen you know somebody runs up the big medical bill or war. The have a business setback they lose their job earlier than they thought they would and I've seen the music now giving it a case study that I saw. In in 2009 just this woman her husband died and she just did not want to leave the house so she used to reverse mortgage to stay in the house Oca. And what happened news you remember you couldn't giveaway house in 2009. We used they don't know who's the market was terrible nobody there are no buyers don't know very few of you might have fires you know lenders who won't lend the money that was the bigger problem she stayed in that house until 2017. And finally egos too much for her to maintain on Earl yeah sold in 2017. And made enough money. On that increased value between 2009 and 2070. Hours a right to pay up the or more is that right so in that particular case. What it was it was a godsend for her she got to stay in the house which she really want it to use do yup in the mortgage paid for itself because of home price appreciation. Now thing to remember and you guys need to remember Nancy is you start on appear curse somebody told me this went on history. Housing prices don't always go up. And that's the eat you know you guys have lived it last eight years all they've done is go. I think there's a very good case that within the next three to six months you're going to see on a month to month basis not Euro per year yet. But month to month I think you can see national prices either flat or down. Talk to a mortgage broker I talked to one last week. He said businesses. And maybe and I'm talking new home. Mortgage origination visited Jesus Ortiz had knows by now that this is why I don't think the Fed's hiking three times next year at I think they want to not think they wanna talk a tough game and I don't think they're going to be able to present think housing is in the process right now rolling over last last week's existing home sales number spooked me you want. Now that that was the kind of number when you miss by 3% purity and a declining you know home sales market. That's the kind of number where you say gee we get two or three more these there's something new real here. Now that's gonna it's not gonna cause you know the same thing as 2008 because banks are better capitalized you got better. You know over or not still ability is not like we're building houses notes it's it's not the same type of issue. But it's something where you sit there and say gee bit could be the kind of thing that starts to cause a garden variety recession. So it'll lose their electricity this winter new economic news or are we gonna have her lawyer. Wrote what they're talking in India about rolling black. Yeah they're talking about it so long story short here's what's going on so did the CEO of a grid called I assume new England and said last Thursday. That New England in in in particular parts of Massachusetts were quote precariously close to rolling blackouts just one large contingency away. And so that the big thing here is specifically regards to. Eight plant that the company Exel on owns in Everett it's the big guy natural gas Lebanon's right there in a sticker it's right across the street from the hotel the casino that's don't cut and they pretty much only have. A couple major turbines left their mystic east in nine the only ones open. And pretty much they've done analyses that show. Pay if we don't get additional money flowing into this facility it's not going to be able to stay in business because it's not profitable not cost competitive today. To which you know they're pretty much asking what they're gonna break the they'll wanna charge more. Yes they wanna charge you more than it is they say it's gonna be less than one dollar per month on monthly electric bills in order to keep these plants go through 20/20 four. To which I say look it's probably gonna have to happen because you can't build additional capacity in such a short time period. But what I would make contingent here is I'd say look. The big issue was that the natural gas it's the inordinate power this plant comes in by Alan G liquefied natural gas tankers and cost an arm and a leg. Wears you out all kinds cheek got gas down Pennsylvania can't get it here know the stuff that if you build the infrastructure get it up here can't get you'd be all set so what I say is a can approve this. With the contingency. That you get those pipelines going so that this isn't an issue going forward. He had beetle control both. B it's not like you say me. Elect your talking about the people western mask or saints group were not to build a pipeline term backyard and that's all well and good until they lose power get his eventually you get to the point. Who should make them lose power for here's the rating cut off power Springfield. And and who I don't know if you wanna do that well in relative to if they're the ones that are stopping whatever round stopping us from building the pipeline we should just say OK you we. Lou we will build through your back here to return to the big thing that I see on this though is look it's it's a question of what do you wanna pay now or pay later either look if we don't do anything. You're just gonna keep seeing these cost going up as it's gonna continue to get you know more and more and economical. To bring that gas in this way. If you say hey look we know we need to do this it's time to make the investment and do it yeah you're gonna pay a little bit to do it now put these problems go away then. And that's that's kind of where I stand on this so we're not really who's an actress. I don't thinks Aminu looked like you're gonna have trees down you'll lose electricity that wave rolling blackouts markets at some point it might mean again like I don't you notice the utility companies do a lot of tree Workman. I have. Coached judged that I signed Aybar they've been. An off these trees cause I saw at home done after the winter sought on this spring just as there were so many problems haven't seen as you saw last week. They. You guys recently married maybe you both Latin but he the year after. Yeah you're the specialized. Ways pregnant and yours. You think air here Chuckie got a very nice. And I'm gonna leave the room two years ago two years ago. Gaze at cream cleanups. No pre two of you to print them now now print. What happened. We were going to and we couldn't quite figure out some of the language on to be completely missed so we've we ended up just punting and didn't do anything does it cost about 2500 bucks to pre. Yeah the if you look at Sunni and get along if if you look at the average cost in terms of kind of where things end up shaking out the average cost around 2500. But if you do you have more complicated situations let's say there's a difference Ian overall leader and we situation earnings and things like that. In order gets complicated is if the if your run family business. Opener that's absolutely let's say you're running a boat yard in the damn things were ten million bucks in your married somebody who has no money yet. And and you're the heir to the boat here you know actually owned it right yeah that that's that's right seen pre Leon. We'll talk more about that will also have a Wall Street watch the markets are open and it's. Kind of nasty in New York we'll let you know with the numbers are just couple minutes. Shoot us a message if you have one to share yet but my first name Barry at the beginning of your text. 607 rights. Barack got a pre nup to protect my house after losing my first one to my ex wife. That's great freedoms in news you you iron that out I don't have a house so problem sources. That's all I don't doubts. There you go doctor. There ago. This retirement expense has hit 100000. Dollars annually and it's continuing to rise were talking about. The cost of care we're talking about assisted living facilities were talking about specifically nursing homes cost of this stuff is just going through the roof. Yen the median cost of a private room in a nursing home is about a 100000 a year that obviously is being nationwide caution when you talk about the cost in the northeast and it really anywhere on the East Coast and we're not in the middle of the country. You're talking significantly higher than that. And so this is one of the biggest things that I think people you know don't necessarily have a clear plan for just because. Really hard to plan for 100000 dollars a year that you're going to be spending on something like this a lot of cases it was not very many people that can afford it. Knowing you you look at what most people have saved you know they might have a couple 100000 dollars total and so each spouse ends up spending a year two in a nursing home. They can wipe out the entire state in in the blink an ivory. You know I dia I've gone through this process with family members and recently and family member that. Is going through now they're not in the new englanders their errors on but the cost of it is about 400000 by Ian. Much of that 400000 dollars those tax deductible. Oh connectors he had a big tax deduction for the 400000 dollar up front this is not. And nursing as well those agent place in locations where they have different levels of care that you gradually move up to it is so and and the 400000 is nonrefundable. Europe they gates when you die is that that's going to get it done that in the family gets none of that 400000 and act OK and then. You're paying a hefty fee every your pain and you know lose upwards of 67000 dollars a month. Part of which again is going to be tax deductible. Do you think there's anything. Out there that ever bends the cost curve on this and or to make it more affordable. As you know here's I have done the math in lake is people say oh gee I can't believe that you know in nursing home cost 151000 dollars a month or something and you do the math you say okay first of all. How much would you pay to live in a hotel room on a nightly basis it's okay. If it's him kind of a middle of the road if you're looking you know with the average person in the country pays. Call it 150 to 200 dollars a month it a night I'm sorry and so right off the bat you're somewhere in the ballpark of 4500 to 6000 dollars a month. And then you need food then you need. Care is so I just look at the nice there and I go I don't know what you can ever do to bend that downward need them on a crucial cheaper. Larry I have ever seen stories about that. No seniors that and tanker ships like permanently permanently remove the ways I write it they'd go live on a cruise ship and it's less expensive than one of these facilities and talk about the reason the cost of these facilities. Are so high. Is ever client that was running one. And if you look at the amount of regulations. That they have to go through you both federal and state regulations. It's all regulatory they cost me the they could provide aid. Care at a much lower cost but it wouldn't be. At the leveled mandated by the states and that's why people out what struck you ought to. Kansas Indy compare the cost of nursing homer health care facility in Kansas as compared to the northeast. Lot of the cost year the F part of its wages handle big chunk of it is regulatory issues what's the quality care at their do you have any idea. There at the facilities are nice the sun's out. I don't know yet cause my family member has been living token into. It generally speaking I think people. The the quality of care. It'll eat if you talk semi it's in a nursing home. They'll tell you it's a lousy A vs lousy B. You know that's that's the old adage that you years early its two nursing home facilities. It's a push anybody wants to be no it's not like he says gee I hope when I get to be eighty I can move into nursing home he say. If you open an 85 I'm still mobile and I can live at home independently. Absolutely folks. Me in his well. Obviously you lead that you picked every I mean we've we've bold talk about it so you do talk about it and buy your Turkey your wife's an education. Yes it does it's something in terms of we're talking purely investment decisions are financial decisions will know this is purely looking at investments. So. In terms of those I've typically handled those for her and anything else financially she runs her own budget she does her own stuff and I don't ask questions. Spark separate checkbooks. Oh instincts that's what we do it's it's a marriage saving tool. Over. Is ambitiously. I'm 20/20 one for food delivery drone tweeted how long we've been talking about burritos by doron I mean is no at least weary warriors are now waiting for the of these at least three or four years out they were awaiting another three or four. Have an uneven rolling my eyes at that I think Cooper is in a full blown PR blitz to try to get as much values they can and their IPO next year and when incidentally that's their currency you know. It is an aunt and look I get what they're trying to do. But we're not going to have an army of Hoover drones just flying overhead dropping burritos on all of our heads. Within three years you know and it's just it's not feasible not not so much. What the technology obviously we have drones now to regulations EDT the regulatory side of things you know he just is otherwise you can have drones crashing into each other yeah what's the worst at a media outlets a Domino's Pizza drone made its collides with a panera bed bread pizza for what could go wrong. We'll be so easy drop some sandwiches on the double A Concord it's in in nature they call that cross breeding. You know all of a sudden you. Taco pizza let our treasure it and came up from it you know though it's only dead and Amazon drone hits a Taco Bell drone and boom you've got you know tacos at your front door like an eerie ear you're not behind this they're saying that B. Liberal eats portion of mover is worth twenty billion dollars and I'm saying that I'm worth a hundred billion but it doesn't mean anything if no one's gonna pay that much. This is a much anticipated IPO it's. Very really heightens the will they're trying to because they could I I think they're trying to June but it really drama is much publicity as possible. But one thing they're missing is the self current core technology and profits. You know whether it that it but the two go hand in hand you can't be profitable. In that business analyst you have self driving you have to get rid of the humans even then they're only going to be like marginally profitable you know you you you run Acosta and if you get rid of humans which most people estimated somewhere around you know thirty to 35% of the cost and and running that business. They're running negative 20% margins right now Snyder twenty Everett of the humans you can raise the rate. Why why would you why would you raise the rate later. Because and you have the pricing power you know competition with the humans or Obama or if competition. Who I can still drive my car I can hop on a train I can I act now on a bus there's all kinds things like. It's not just over competing with itself like there's there's all kinds different ways to get around account on a bike checking up on a scooter you wanna know in urban areas the number one competitor for these things it's going to be all those motorized scooters that are being deployed right now because of all those companies. That are in that business autos in Paris they're all over that he's going to be you wanna talk about what is huge competition for Hoover going forward and urban areas. That is it it is going to be bigger than people realize I still think they're gonna make a ton of money on those. But there is going to be an awful lot of competition because Kostis much less on that side. They go to the movies will tell you what was generating a lot of stir this past weekend that's next. Cushing and old guy for the month October called Medicaid income trusts. Product to confess the average person is not going to know win the trust documents they have or right or wrong. The need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid. Income trust or an asset protection trust you know their I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical and and and people aren't gonna know one way or another so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing as they play the taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court they can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up and I door all the time. But also make sure on their card when you get their card to use the letters LLM after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you zoo unfortunately that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you want to have a flat feet. At least of this pulling in as you mentioned 77 million and change vets and 75 overall I don't run tomatoes doctor and it has an 80%. And brought to me tips for 70% of the audience like. So pretty even there pretty good there it it does look like they're so absolutely terrible movies coming out this week so I think how we and is likely to remain strong especially. You know we had another up and up and how well this is the weekend of all Halloween parties right. Be sat up and down sort of one of Saturn him and that the movies coming out this weekend look absolutely terrible. So I anticipate it's going to end up staying in that top spot there that you pay fifteen bucks just go get. Scared. It. Well I mean this class. Well sure it's a remake but yesterday it stop the same character if you like Jamie Lee Curtis is and that's really via RS but yeah. Yet the board they brought like a lot of you like your back and everything but yet continues to was do very well by the way do you remember. Couple when was it. I'm trying to remember. The couple months back you members of the crazy rich Asians movie yeah yes and so you know we had talked about hey you know how well is this movie going to do it you know and at a budget thirty million but it it really strong back to back weekends and so forth. It's pretty much closed up at this point. But it did 231. Million dollars 30000030. Million dollar budget huge win their four Warner Bros. and until they make additional money when it goes on Netflix or Amazon built some additional licensing but it's it's always the ball could just made up front even though there is more now with those streaming services there is more that you know when's happening. But he was you know really good one for Warner Bros. there. Just as they were studio that the united struggled to kind of find any footing this year and increased rich Asians is their best performing movies in the united. States this year very profitable. Labor force participation. Among prime AG US women. 25 to 54 has risen to 75 point 2% from 73 point 3%. Three years ago what can we learn from that it would wits the what's the lesson to be learned from an increased number of women in that age group. Working. I think there's there's two things that I really clean permit number one the I think that the cost of running a household today is much higher than it was previously NC you have more families. With two spouses working as the number one. The second piece. Is that we have not seen a similar bounce back form and over that time span. In as a result I think you look at that you say why are we you know that it raises more questions for me in that. Why are men not coming back into the workforce at the same rate as the drug addiction. I'm sure that table I don't so I don't know because I don't know drug addiction more men are addicted to drugs on talk of a deal purely crisis if you look at the number I haven't seen the numbers how to how to address that is the disparities like I I'm gonna. I don't wanna I don't wanna put it out their. Because of a gold from memory in that memories fail but I know a lot more men. Dies from. Openly deductions and one is I'm working on pulling up the numbers right now so we will get males aged yet fuel its 25 to fifty forced pretty much flat over the last three years notes up slightly from about eighty ye aaron's yes it was just 1% what is this due to the birthrate. The fact that more women is are they going back to work because they've had kids in the need money to pay for college or are they simply not having kids and that's when there's more women I don't know if you can glean enough from this data to be able saint. You know it's I eat it's really hard to be able to say when this is happening just because. It is not happening just in the United States either this is going on in Canada Australia in the UK women. Are becoming a much larger percentage of the work. Yep and it in I think again when you have I think eighty economies are strong enough that you know you have people coming in who were enticed by a better job offers that they might have gotten a few years ago. But it's also more expensive to run a household today you know you. So expensive to pay for day care they easily elected you wanna be if you wanna have a key. I mean you've got to make a lot of money to justify going back to work what because it is bring your child to work done here. Would that be nice. I was just a day care's expensive if you talk to young families. About the cost of you know drop in that kid off at the child care center. It you better make a lot of heavy debt used to be why a lot of Wednesday told us wife stayed up is cheaper to have personal. She did pretty good job. Ross gonna talk to you about that. Eight biggest changes that are being made to social security and when he nineteen. And then finally. Might have a problem with oil higher but it's very truck with you here it's a Monday morning and let's get the bad stuff out of the way first Hasbro cutting their workforce. By about 10%. Could be a lot of people off. Yet looks like some of locally here and doing it looks like they are going to be making about a 10% cut to their workforce. Largely because they are seeing change with how consumers quote buy and play with toys. For me that means either not buying as much in stores and especially with Toys 'R' Us going out of business they don't have as much of a presence in stores anymore. In in terms of play with toys. Think people are buying more video games for kids they're not buying as many of the brick and mortar into port and border into the hard goods anymore my granddaughters and water to him but the two. That that's. That's not a kid that's top lake again when you talk about they always talk about age for buying your rules you think about how many kids have iPad state I live now -- uptight there is this grounds well absolutely ground swell. Towards keeping kids away from them why don't thing. The U are starting to see you're not all the statistics show its worst really yet all of us I don't I don't I don't once says all I don't want my kid to have this say they still go to any restaurant do you see any can actually talking their family instead of looking down an iPad like did the other night. Yeah exact date I I thought maybe your generations finally waking up because it's a problem and it's a generational problem and need these York. Generational problem that this is something. Millennia actually not our problem it's not known a generation above us yeah we we haven't had kids like Tucker and I don't have kids it's not. I don't have it like his kids not able on an iPad like you can't say it's our kids when I year old kids who are doing us. I can't blame you for something no I already give blame for giving myself participation trophy is that something actually did when I was five Blake did Toys 'R' Us miss on revenue to. They missed on Toys 'R' Us is out of business now yes I would assume they missed on revenue has brought this on both revenue they did it yet in the largely because of that Toys 'R' Us bankruptcy they they continue to see. Some struggles as a result of that's they're down about 5% today. Because of it. And they're gonna have to do you figure out a way. To get past that whether it's hate you know do we you know figure out ways to sell direct to consumers more from on line which by the ways and a higher margins any that's how wide by two points. On line honestly in today's day and age I don't know why every single. Companies actually makes goods doesn't have a website that allows direct sales to consumers the margins are higher there's enough. Apps and so forth you can build in to make it easy for you to handle everything. Every company that has a product to sell. Should be selling direct online because he cut the middleman out and if they're not you know it's it's kind of a problem Hasbro does have that. The question is you know are they able to capitalize on is that built the way needs to be. An and I think that's where there's some questions why the kind of don't. Through this restructuring. Not everybody. Has grandchildren to worry about but just about everybody's going to be collected Social Security some day. And you're going to be getting the biggest cost of living increase we've had in years two point 8% on January 1. Yet the biggest increase awarded since 2011 in the biggest one paid since 2012 it's gonna be an average raise of about forty dollars a month. Depending on exactly where you will where you fit in spores what you benefit is that might be you know higher or below that. But if you're the average Social Security part is not collecting. Participant it's going to be about 14100 going up by about forty bucks a month in if you were on if you're Rick tiring collecting Social Security at each seventy. Bill largest benefit you can get is now 3770. Dollars a month. You know if you've maxed that out for the whole 35 years yeah works out to about 46000 dollars a year and if you've maxed out for your entire earnings history. That is up from 3698. A year ago so about a one point 95%. Increased. If you're at age 65 the biggest benefit is going up by six point 49%. Up to 27572589. You know the the other thing that's happening with Social Security this next year. Is the wage limit is increasing in 2018. If you need a 132000. Are no excuse me he made a 128400. Dollars or if you need more than that you Jeanette paid by attacks. Now it's you in 2019 that number's going to a 132900. Yes no greater portion of wages are going to be taxed for high earners so what is that like 45% of workforce is not not not many people are making more than one that's above that I'm let me take a look -- actually let me see if I can hold what the what the numbers aren't that just some illegal ails the in the old days you guys are too young to remember this but. That Medicare tax year you ever notice that they break it out they Medicare you acts yeah. That used to be capped at about 50000 bucks now that's and kept you paid that Medicare tax on every penny you can make a million bucks. In your pain that Medicare tax and so we're looking at 130 to 900. And it looks like that is. That seems to busy top 593 point 5% so there's about six and a half percent of people that are going to be affected by this just means a you know nectar paycheck your your pain that Mike attacks and it's a big tax. It's a flat tax it is if if you're self employed you paying all the twelve point 4% if you are employed by a company you pay six point 2% in the company pays six point 2% as well people forget that unity they talk about tax rates in this. My tax rates 35% notes 41 for you got to factor that it you know and then they forget about the state outside it is you get this up 35% as another five fell into the statement that in most cases not Florida. Normal retirement age is increasing by two months that's just that's part of the I think that went into effect in the 1990s. Where they pushed out the retirement age. Yeah I was one of the things they didn't order to make the program more sustainable. It's gonna be something they have to do again in May want to be a deal with the funding issues. That the trust fund hazard rather is going to happen about fourteen years now that we can make a little bit more money those of you who collector Social Security early. You can earn a little bit more money without suffering a reduction in your benefit in those early years you know 62 to 67 yep you retire before full retirement age to now be able to earn 171640. Dollars a year up from 171040. That's what he'd be able to earn without it affecting your benefit. Great question that a lot of people have actually look if you're retiring any given year and then let's say you retire in July of that year. Lot of people have a question hey can I earned income prior to that that's an excess of that. The answer is yes. If you are turning full retirement age 2019 you can earn up to 4600920. In the months prior to turning normal retirement age but if you earn more than that. Then Social Security with holds one dollar for every three dollars above the limit. In my. US shale has a glaring problem this is one that this and unfortunately our friends in Saudi Arabia are aware of this. Yeah we're producing a lot of oil. In the United States I think we're we're the largest producer in the world. Bird second markets were read probably depends on the given week but we're right in the ballpark yeah problem as we're losing money doing. Well it's so here's what's interesting it's in particular. This was looking at a review of 33 quote publicly traded oil and gas fracking companies. So this is just companies that are involved. Ian oil and gas fracking not companies that are. You know just have as a portion of their business but purely ones that do that. And what it found. Were that these 33 companies post a combined three point nine billion dollars in negative cash flow in the first half of 28 team. Native cash flow in the short term doesn't necessarily mean you give me negative in the long is that because you give a lot of cap backs up concrete pour a lot of have a lot of capex they didn't break it out release so it's hard to see where it's coming from moon. But it's it's something that I think could be a little bit of a red Herring just because it could be that they just investing a ton of money right now because they think oil prices are going to continue. To move upward so. I'm curious to see what this looks like on a consistent basis just you know obviously we've seen this report here. What was it a year ago what was it two years ago he knows is this something that's changing here you know because companies are adding so much capacity in the US right now we've seen US capacity. Go for about eight and a half million barrels a week up to eleven million or day rather up to eleven million barrels today over the last two and a half years. It could just be either having a Tony capacity and that's what's going on here. Still distribution issue ultimately chosen the week we either don't have the ports or we don't have the pipelines to get it where we needed because we theoretically. We shouldn't be exporting any oil if we had enough pipelines to get where we needed this must more profitable export. And that he should it ever be more price like if you think about where we and export to re exported to China why should we have to. Ship it all the way to China should it be less expensive to send it to the northeast by pipeline in Japan to China on a barge. What they think it is less expensive that's why you shipment to China instead is that it's more profitable as it again there's they're China is now the biggest night your standard of oil in the world they have the demanded they don't have the production I understand and they need to be able to pay for this story telling me. Eat your your produced because most arrows come from the Permian base Texas right. I it's it's scattered mean you've got big deposits now that are shown of it like in Colorado you've got to go is that colonel production now is in its larger come and I think it's about 30% it's in Texas. CA your biggest load coming out of there. We're still importing. Between what we buy from Canada and and our friends in the Middle East we're still importing good seven million barrels of Pia. So why my point is if if you had. A distribution system would you really need to be exporting and all the board who would you be better you mean by distribution systems pipelines. Well how do you think the oil is getting to the ports. It is struck but he the though we can't get natural gas to the northeast and we can get oil to the next guest is different issue so I think when when we look at Nat gas that's a very separate issue that's local to the northeast and and that's because we haven't built pipelines. But if you look at how you know oil's flowing around most of the culture right now. It's it's not a pipeline issue to get it to most places aside from the northeast and you know the northeast is an isolated issue but its of its own making you know they they because we won't allow the play. That's the big thing you'd you'll keep the entire rest of the country they don't have the same issues then. Hey coming up or to tell you why you should no longer. Torture vodka. In the freezing I thought everybody put their vodka in the freedom that has it's supposed to do. The the keep vodka is I guess. Taste not good if you're drinking the room temperature and that's what I really docket and which is part of the reason why probably don't like Bok is because I've typically only to teaching stuff you know it's can you don't handle college. So that the premium ones like great views are supposed to be a little bit softer little bit less aggressive and so. You actually in the hiding the quote more sophisticated rooms and flavors when you stored at a really low temperature. What you're supposed to do is just chill when you drink it but you don't wanna have you know below zero or anything like that think it's hide some of those flavors. Banks golden deposits are heading out the door we've been told people to do this for at least two years people are listening. What they are keen is that if you look at the biggest banks the four biggest ones in the United States JPMorgan chase Bank of America Wells Fargo and Citigroup. They reported a combined 5% drop in US deposits that earn no interest for the third quarter that's compared to a year ago. And so there's about thirty billion dollars in cash that was withdrawn from these bank accounts that don't earn any interest over the last year. And pretty much what that shows. Is a potential issue for these banks because these deposits were the most profitable ones that banks hat when you have to pay out nothing. But you can earn 45%. In a mortgage based on lending out against those deposits. It makes you a beat big profit. If all of a sudden you have to say gee. I can't pay 0% anymore and these deposits more to keep my got to pay 12 or 3%. That starts eating into your interest margin and banks become less profitable. We where you're seeing it in in large faction is with business owners yes you might have a business owner and you know he always keeps half a million or million dollars or ten million dollar gift. In the bank if that's not uncommon know you're running a large business you people lot of cash on it. And five years ago chucked it in care because they were making any interest on that bank deposit either. But now. If they transfer that over to who are the big online banks pay interest Capital One's been the biggest one day they acquired ING direct about maybe five or six years ago sand when the biggest one out there see you're the CFO for company that's got ten million dollars in cash yeah right. And you're looking and set off by a move that ten million a load of that are JPMorgan. And I move over to cap one that's two underground here. One in in you talk about what you're able to get on these rates casino like I checked fairly frequently just decide I do shop around on these things. And if you look now at you know either just near checking savings or union money market accounts and things like that. You can find money market accounts north of 2% now you know whereas if you listen in BankAmerica in active anywhere close to. You're ticked you off though if he if you are that CFO with ten million bucks in the checking out yeah. If you go to Bank of America and you say well I want more interest but give it to. Yes they well they need it just eat it shouldn't that's that's terrible way to do business. In what way. He. Everything used to be done via negotiation and every used to be publicly you know oh here's the rate it used to be you'd have to go and say. You know part of the shopping experience used to be at banks you block and say hey what are you gonna give me hey William what toast at a rate steer yeah exactly that's that's what it used to be. It's it's changed a lot I think change for the better because of what we can do one line now and and the ability to shop around. But used to be that's what he had to do remember squeaky wheel yeah it's it's what you had to do now. That are in just it doesn't appeal to me David Dow is down 39 points nasdaq's up 58. Most concerned about the price of oil that's as good news down 23 cents a barrel at 6889. Everybody had a heat on last night can't tell you what yeah it was cold chilly. And we say cheap son of a gun I need to take some income from a powerful. You gave it really does change and specifically war go to more in income generation mindset and it's difficult today because if you look at a lot of the ways that people historically did that CDs yielding 5%. Bonds yielding five or 6% her you don't have those tools available anymore C need to make sure that you're still adapting your portfolio to the new demands of retirement. But you need to make sure that using the right instruments and so that can be a combination of dividend paying stocks can be equities that you simply pick gonna grow and pull little principal off there. As well last in the right mix of bonds they can generate some income as well. What about municipal bonds at something to people years. He is a 120 billion dollars they have to take that with a grain of salt. Because it didn't seem like very long ago when they're trying to get radical line they were valuing the company at less than sixty billion write those last year. Yeah and in in Lincoln used to go when you take a look at you know all the major auto companies and you know GM is valued at 43 billion dollars right now for the battered up Ford and GM Cooper's IPOs worth more than both those companies combine we could add the two of them you can add Fiat cramming you can go down the list privilege aside from Toyota there's no one who's anywhere near that market cap. You know Toyota is Dave I believe 120. Billion dollar company or somewhere in that ballpark. But this is why I think talking about these kinds of valuations. Our knots yeah that Turkey whether it's. EU EU we its semantic treaty could be isn't a 120 billion is it hundred hand and that is it's going to be a big number. Within the public it's going to be very very large number picture where do you think the clock and that's the question because they that he lives there and they're talking crazy numbers the company FaceBook was the same way. But when they went public service it was a soccer then everybody on CNBC in blue I don't buy it. Look at it but you can't put a face you can't put the FaceBook is they are the exception that proves that you look at the companies like every other tech company that IPO in the last decade now. Sucked. Hit it Stockton. To go to who also is this the on the list like sex Jacques is like everybody uses. I mean it's a bull either keep the how many people have pit it's like I I get that but that doesn't mean it's worth a 120 billion dollars like. Just saying oh wait everyone uses this now they don't make money. Like big idea but investors believe that they will but that doesn't matter like eventually I was. Actually does matter I tell you the 120 billion dollar value and how that worked in the tech ball. Yeah it's currently companies that are better than a lottery ticket. But. This is the point that I'm trying to make is we're now in the at the point or comparing this to me lottery. Now that's not an investment that's gambling. And so I look at Hoover never says or does the future what they do. What what they do what it's harder than anyone else that car companies if Graham the only car company in my estimation it seems to have. Invested substantial non capital it. And really understands that side of the business is General Motors and their stock is doing a darn thing. Did their stocks now in in that's why I'd say. This isn't worth a 120 billion dollars if the car companies that are actually doing this aren't getting the same boost that all Wall Street Sony is crime. Wouldn't be the first. Michael. Is gonna change the fight the scores again and having cash in the bank whose gonna help. You credits which is. Yep pretty much what they're doing is that they are rolling out to this knew a method of scoring. In in the next year so we don't have an exact roll out date yet just because we don't have all the information on how this program is going to work. But pretty much of like it was in discussions with a bunch of lenders to put out what's called the quote. All for a fight goes score and so what it's going to do it's gonna take into account cash transactions that happened inside bank accounts as a way to potentially boost up people's credit scores who previously might not have qualified for certain types of loans so there's a lot of people that don't use credit cards and when they go to buy a car they pay cash for exactly and so those the people that this is going to target is you know candidate group that you have these they're still in the banking system but they don't use a ton of credit products now. And because of that they don't have the quote credit history. That most other people. Might happens though. This is something that is going to provide significant boost for those folks. If you already have good credit. Probably doesn't do a ton to help or hurt you either way but if you are someone who hasn't used credit a lot. And you've really just primarily have been using debit cards and cash transactions and things like that. It is going to be useful for you if that's the case. Folks do you have a trust to protect your assets if not in a few closing in on retirement. In this message is for you. Planning for retirement can be complicated to its best to deal with an expert. In on hearing that both South Florida and Boston. Have fallen out of the mix for Amazon each Q2 is that right loudly in and you don't. Chuck and I have had opinions on this straight chuck I think originally what you Raleigh, North Carolina your thank them. Rose and it was I Charlotte Charlotte I can't remember Charlie and these ritual now and I'm a homer so I was saying is going to be Boston. We'll say we both wrong they still we're seeing in the markets you've got. Fairly substantial. Real estate investment funds that are banking on that Virginia area there they're making huge investments buying up. Residential real state any they combined for real estate in that Virginia. Yen the big thing is Amazon already has a massive facility in Northern Virginia that's more infrastructure oriented in that area. Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post he's so there you you know you think about it in you say okay gee this is something the potentially you know points towards that that's what a lot of people pointed towards is being one of the most likely areas you know it in I get that I guess. I've always a terrible reason to do you because you see young lives there mean the guy's gonna. William in world and I and he liked it liked how long do you like it if from a corporate structure you talk about what the biggest companies in the world. And they are gonna choose this home office based on where the CEOs of these short commute I don't think that's it though I think it's again they are to have Microsoft to that was Seattle yeah. You know they they already have a really big presence there and in particular I think that with how big they're getting they want to and and again this is. Not necessarily a good thing in in in kind of the broad scheme of things but I think they want to be close to where. Governance has done and I think they want to have import our regular flour to get away from that go to and I mean it speaks to how big they're getting that if you talk about the biggest risk for Amazon over the next decade its regular cost yeah it's that that's where it is you can make a case they RD should be subject to more regulation on that front now they're just lucky that congress and so ignorant. That they don't understand the issue. They. Understand how these companies. Well in it beyond its we've never really looked at companies that have provided net benefits for consumers and subjected them to antitrust probably notes it's like. They're not busy early carries tumors these politically variant thought it would be like that if you're the person said no we're gonna make things more challenging for you to shop. Think that's tough it's the type sell the place where we've seen it before is you know you're back to the railroads historically. Oh boy got one company that lets me shipped from point a to point B you know. You know that in its it arm and a leg that's a problem if they're saying no free shipping and we'll get it to you today. It's what they're doing those killed little. And and little guys are starting. Because there and their function you know what they're doing is built. The they're screwing their resellers error in there and the people come to the marketplace is saying they are old dog food and then all of a sudden. You know Amazon sell on the same dog. Either Amazon selling it or there's counterfeits out there and Amazon's not police in the counterfeits and and it's it's a real problem if you are a retailer that depends on Amazon for a lot of your sales and it's it's really tough these days. Speaking of retailers. JC Penney is so hard up for workers and their offering free vacations to new York and Miami. Is retails war for talent heats up. The JC Penney idea they benefit from Sears closed. In what way. As this year shopper now gonna say what it costs up this year solo shop GC JC penny better hope so because otherwise I don't know how much longer they're in business anyways if but they are trying to do just about anything in order to get its candidates come in and interview for them so they are looking for 39000 holiday workers. And says they are. Also offering a small number eight successful candidates actually. Some expensive prizes if they'd be you know go and apply for jobs at JC Penney the prize or anything. Along the lines of 5000 dollar owned crew all inclusive trips to New York City. To Miami's thousands of dollars in technology or outdoor equipment and ends. It might not matter is this might be JC Penney's last Christmas season it made stocks traded dollar 47 it's you know you've got there they were never this the size and scale that Sears was never had the importance culturally. But this is a major retailer. You know this this was a major major retailer this company by the way was worth eighty dollars a share. About eleven years ago February 9 2007. And now they're worse. Dollar 46. Seen it happen before that coming up we're being joined by Antuan Goodwin from CNET road show to talk about the 2019. Toyota Avalon is that the big man. Time to talk cars are we're joined now by Antuan Goodwin from CNET roach who had a talk with 2019. Toyota Avalon Antoine thanks for joining us today. Aren't doing well so I took a look at the Avalon just as I always liked to have you know look at the cars before we talk about him. My first question is what happened to the front of this car because it. It looks like it giant mouth driving down the road facing right now you what's what's the thought on the styling. Well the analog front end is. Ridiculously aggressive this year I think that's what it is making them a large step to kind of get away from the boring brand that sort of be reputation and it's bad. And it might have gone as far on the apple obviously you look at it from the side from the rear maybe even from certain angles. You can see what they're going forward the aggressiveness but knowing that I know really think that it worked out well for them. So let's get past kind of what the front end looks like. Let's go first under the hood what what what kind of engine do we have what what are we work with the terms of power there. You've got a couple of options the main option to most people going to be at 300 horsepower V6 engine that actually feels really good in the car. I've been meeting with a pretty move automatic transmission but if you are. Other kind of person who want limited fuel economy and you don't really care about having 300 horsepower he could step down to. About a 200 horsepower. Hybrid version that can reach around 4344. Miles per gallon. I fear concern would like it move comfortable ride go hybrid if you're looking for something when more power for past saying the veep stakes is definitely solid option. When when you get inside of this the Avalon is is you know Toyota's luxury car that they make how close does that get to their brand Lexus in terms of overall quality and in the comfort that you can get firmness. William period excellent favorite part of the Avalon especially in the limited trim what they've got a really nice letter. Really nice detailed what he's seeing and stuff like that. The interior the Avalon in my opinion. Is about as good that it took an electric Fiat. And so it kind of makes it a little bit of a tossup between where do you wanna pay more for the electric speaking. Slightly better didn't finish. Or you're really happy with what what would arguably be called him very luxurious interior and the Avalon at that. Most of the building with over you can expect from elect sister on the comparable. But for a little less money. What stands out as far as bells and whistles there anything in particular that stands out as far as the technology that's available in this car. Woke. One make the clearest big east since. We standard earlier adaptive cruise control your lane keeping fearing that this compliance by monitoring all of at a standard features between nineteen model years so you don't pay extra. He gave any of those things anymore or at some of the competition your check on what they're. 2000 dollar they each package to get something like that so out of the bikes. You've got pretty much everything that you could why as foreign driver aid and comfort technology for long highway crews visitors log into traffic. Menuing be that you really have to pay more for a band would be nicer then what you've been elated he. Antawn what are we looking at in terms of cost on the Avalon where do you start in how high can you end up. There are 35 but the base model which again bill comes with. All of that they via technology and it still a really nice looking car on the inside it is very early. Top of the line you're looking around 43 depending on where you get a beef stakes are high over there about what they range they've done an interesting thing where they. And a sports. They're trams so that you either go forty or you can go luxurious than at the end of the day you don't end up paying too much more you just have to decide what attic are you why. You're good Antawn we've got to run but thanks for joining us and we will catch up with the soon. That is Antuan Goodwin from CNET Roche are talking about the 2019. Toyota apple CEO pay forty grand. For one of the ugliest cars on the road that is just sinful that's a lot in in my wrong until and as it does not look good ought to coral. I looked at it outside a big mouth coming at you is just an hideous it's Sarah can I offer my two cents on why they did it. You're about to stand out it's cheaper to build grilled then to build the give the ball or Norma and I order for an improved slight. The weight of the car which helps gas mileage I've been it's stuff like that actually plays and as well as it does not will and I'll tell you now it like you said it looked like an open mouth that the rest like that the rest of the car actually looks pretty nice but you see the front of it nearly. What's not and there's part of the car did the bumper fall off like what's the what happened to tough sell. That that's its cities. 8000 out of aggressive a lot of these on the road and in you know the thing he has. People don't wanna buy sedans in the first place don't you take sedan sales. Have fallen. You know beat people want these suvs seasonings is either the full size midsize war. You know he had a family he elected you buy and we're losing its eerie that that's what people don't. Yet Avalon historically if you look at how many vehicles they cell per year. It. Doesn't look like it's done particularly well recently it's declined for about 4802016. It's gonna end up being around 32000. This year and actually 2014 had been around 67000. And under be many next year player and yes they're they're struggling with you know being able to the key to gross sales. And you ladies and alarmed you know maybe they won't do it maybe did you show in the back half of the car in at least you'd sell and Taylor to the front. What affiliate we have your deposit you just sell the back out for itself to real option holy smokes Dow's down 182. Points that's not. Nasdaq's up for some reason to 24 points the recipes down twelve Brussels up four points. Price of boils down ten cents a barrel. At 6902. And gold is trading down five dollars an ounce. At 1223 will be back tomorrow. Would another addition of the financial exchange.
