This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Friday here on the financial exchange Barry is out for the days so you've got chuck and Mike in Tucker and we've got a whole bunch to go through including Chinese GDP data. We've got existing home sales starting to maybe circle the toy a little little bit. And then we've got some tipping questions and a anytime that we talked tipping. It always brings out the pretty much every one on the text lines so we're going to be getting into. The etiquette of tipping specifically. With regards to you being pressured to tipped in situations that you shouldn't be. Micah we do and that. It was great to us on his home sales that you you were great until that how do you feel now on a scale from one degree where aria. Five OK that hey here's pretty is pretty bad information we got this more existing themselves not terribly surprising but not good it was a good so let's let's talk about what we actually got here just because. I do think this is an important ones to dig through so existing home sales in any given month typically make up. About 85 to 90% of all home sales it is the bulk of housing sales in the United States. Just as most people aren't buying brand new house when I bought my Condo and then my house eventually. They were brand new Mike Condit was originally built 1894. My house he built a 25 years ago I'm guessing you're kind of in the same boat you've probably never bought a brand new I have never Bodden and most people haven't. And so existing home sales to really key data point does it tells a state what what things actually what's what's actually moving and turning over. And we had to beat me us on this number we are expecting to see five point million. Five point three million annualized sales. For the month September payment 3% below that five point 15 million. My big concern is that this isn't over because. I think this is largely rural related to rising rates you know you've seen rates move up significantly over the course of the year. And in particular I think this is kind of the canary in the coal mine on the on the overall housing market simply because. When you look at kind of wears things have been going we've we've had a couple you know. Questions on pay housing starts and so forth but. You can explain that away by saying okay the cost of regulation size so it's expensive to build now and a lot of desirable lots of Marty did built Obama blah. Existing home sales is they get this is it this is the ball Peter housing sales in when you're missing by 3% there. That suggests that it's not inventory problem at this point that suggests that you're having trouble converting what inventory that is there. In the sales mean after you have both in inventory and he didn't and a health issue you can handle efficiency and in the numbers fell 3.4 percent from the August numbers. And four point 1% year over year. Eyes so either way that you look at and it's not good on a month to month basis it's not good on a year over year basis. And I think we are all seen this go take a look at you know the the real estate listings in your area price cuts I'm seeing price cuts and nursing homes that are on the market heck of a lot longer than they worry year. Which. This reminds me an awful lot not in terms of the problems that we got into them but in terms of you know that the price cuts and things like that that's kind of the first sign usually at the housing market isn't as strong as people thought. Are back in 2006 and 2007. Seem kind of thing price cuts come and almost the of people not being able to get to sell their home I had a body remember at the time it was parents were trying to sell their home in his list for a year and a half before they finally seal its. It's it's not at that point. In we don't have the level of risky borrowing that we had and so I'm not suggesting that we're going into a financial crisis. But I am suggesting that higher rates are having an impact on housing. And if you get two or three more months like this that's the kind of data that is going to move the Fed off of their push to hike interest rates three times next year. Yeah absolutely I I take a look at practical examples and I I just personally had my third he would. We're looking at our relations we've never had Arthur kid about a month ago map and we're looking at arsonist and our home appreciate it. And you know. It's fine for right now but I'm worried about ten years from now having you know three female teenagers in my house with only two that choose to show hours basically. It's I'm looking and sent a camera. You know do we go look at need to prove one harder and earn one and a street look at improving our current homered to look at buying a new home. But our interest rates three point 875%. Topped elect know that you go get one now you can a five so I'm I don't I don't know how I justify that and you know in all likelihood I don't see a situation where I'm very likely to. Look at a new home. And so this is the situation that I think the Fed finds itself in his you're seeing signs of the housing market is slowing in the housing market is a major engine for growth both in terms of what people are able to borrow. In order to pay generate spending that way. But also the the economic activity creates as far as jobs for plumbers carpenters electricians HVAC and be you name it you run down the list. And so I think the Fed is between a rock and a hard place because there is inflation coming because. The labor market is so tight right now and that's not going away any time soon and I don't think. At the same time you have a slowing economy is as these numbers indicate on this. That I think is going to become an issue at some point next year the Fed can't have both they can't say hey we're going to chop inflation. And we're going to have a strong housing market you can have both at this point I think that's what this date is telling me they're gonna have to pick what is more important to them. Keeping inflation in check or keeping the economy moving. In that if you go back to the Paul Volcker days Paul Volcker raised rates through the roof because it's it's more important to keep inflation in check to keep the dollar strong. They keep the economy moving in the short term. I don't know we're. It's not going to be the magnitude of what Volcker faced but it's a similar decision. And historical precedent says that Volcker was the out liar because every other time we've seen this. Boasted fed chairs typically say you know let's keep things moving and try to keep the economy move actors that's what we've typically seen so. That's where I come up with my thought they were probably seeing one hike next you're not the three they're guiding towards. This data point is kind of the first one that really suggests haters there's really something that's going on here that the Fed's gonna have to pay attention to that data. Point that I think could easily offset this if you said okay we do have a declining housing market but we got some retail sales at the end of this year that just knocked the roof off. That could could that could get changed things for the Fed that could really push them towards raising interest rates again at two to three hikes next year round and just one. Talk about what's going on in China they reported their second quarter or third quarter GDP I'm sorry. And it came in at six point 5% year over year which begs the question. What the heck is the real GDP there to six point five certainly isn't what's actually going on. Yeah I always tend to discount whenever whenever the Chinese Government puts out bad economic data you always discounted a little bit. But six point 5% for China's not very good anyway that's the worst GDP growth number that they've seen since the first quarter of 2009. And anyone falling at home you remember what the congress like Bakken. First quarter of 2009. Yeah it was a particularly strong note wasn't particularly good so that they eat that again it raises the question hey if if they're telling you would six point 5% slowing. How slow is it actually has a three and a half it for a half. I have no why idea but we know wood from news kind of what we've seen in. Divergences before in numbers between what China tells you and then what their electricity consumption is in their gas consumption. We know it's not usually what they're telling you right it's just a question of how far off previous. But either way you look at this China is going through a period. Of slowing and I think you can. Dropped pretty direct line there between what we're seeing from a trade perspective and the slowing growth. That's going yeah I mean if you wanted to pessimistic view Sherri can say the second largest world economy is slowing down. But if you're an American you want to be optimistic view it appears that it's you know our trade tariffs. Are having a good impact. It appears that we are intentionally trying to and succeeding in slowing down the Chinese economy. So this going to be something that does bear watching me aware of it it's gonna be interesting to see if this continues. Into the fourth quarter they're the China coming in again with its lowest GDP growth number since 2009. Obviously an economy like that can't grow 70% a year for ever. But still it suggests that things are not. Not all rosy in China at the moment here let let's talk tipping because this is say if this is just a bit nominal. Topic to get into so. You two have been in two you've got into whether it's you know bakeries coffee shops wherever may be that. There's a lot of these new point of sale terminals maybe they're run by square PayPal that is but there's a whole bunch of matter there. Where it's pretty much an iPad. And then the cashier Anderson what you're gonna pay in and they flip it over TC can decide your car sign your name and swipe and everything but when they flip it over and show it to you. Even though you're just maybe picking up coffee here maybe there's still spot not a spot but the first propped his hey how much tip do you want to give right. In a lot of people. Are finding themselves in the awkward situation of saying. Who have yet I don't want a tip you anything just because all you're doing is handing me something across account or why in my tipping you for that what's what's going on here. Yeah or maybe in some circumstances you pay 350 for something and you know leave the back in the day you'd say okay here's the fifty cents in church put that the tip jar right. These are prompting much larger tips in the general what you're seeing out there is if your purchase an item for less than ten dollars the options are 12 or three dollars and if it's over ten. And it's fifteen. No 1820 or 25%. Tip levels. As the default. Now that default can be changed by the individual. Owner OK so they don't say okay we wanna change the default there. But a lot of them are necessarily doing that in so. I guess both individuals who were buying stuff as well as cashiers are saying man this is really awkward you know cast your flip it over and you know you've bought for you know two dollar muffin or something like that and it's asking if you wanna give a two dollar tip right and you're sitting there and like. Look I really like it cashier man but. Tip you 100% on this market didn't like it it's good but it's not that good in you and nice but you're not that nice and by the way. He's so let's let's get this cleaned up around. About it here's that practical example and throw out that has driven me crazy there's a brewery that shall remain nameless that I that I frequent and go pick up. A dial a go by a bunch cans there because they don't sell them in liquor stores and to you know you have to go to the bird get them. Go in there you might buy there have been occasions where I bought 200 dollars worth. Cans of beer. And then you go to sign it and there's a you know default 20% tip level for somebody who just. Carried a case of beer over to the counter and gave it to me hmmm I've never tipped the guy at the liquor store. But I I just don't understand why this prompt is coming. Yeah it's bothering me. I'm gonna go and a little different direction or lie do you think that there is added pressure when they do flip that I've had over to you. You can just as easily just say no Tet and I don't have a problem that I frequently do that I'm not a big. Temper when I'm going to copy sharper in the big tip that ideas when I go out to eat and sit down have a meal that's what I really give a good tip. I feel more awkward when I put my left over change in the jar. Because I'm really all yeah I feel we more Purdue and that because. Who the hell wants you know to count all the change at the end of the day at the union leadership role not me that's out of my way out yeah exactly but. I feel awkward making them do that to add a task. You know to make more work for them just to counter to that and I just feel more awkward putting. Change in the jars opposed to a dull. This does take us over to our poll question of the day up on right now on financial exchange showed dot com. Do you feel more pressure to tip on iPad cash registers. Again head over to financial exchange showed dot com and vote. You can also text is at 63566. Let me tell you went downstairs this morning was 54 degrees notice little chilly down there is no cheerleaders more bit chilly here. Let's talk about this Saudi Arabia story and and specifically. What we're starting to hear from the trump administration. CST minutia and treasury secretary of the US pull out of the investment conference it's happening later this month and Saudi Arabia. The truck administration also saying hey we're gonna give me a few more days to figure out what happened and so forth. I don't think this is moving the needle at all as far as what the trump administration's going to do I I know that you know. The headline in the Wall Street Journal say their hardening their Saudi stance after days of mixed signals. You think is gonna be meaningful policy change as a result of us. No probably not I think the bigger potential impact here's the business reaction not the government's reaction to. What happens here I mean if if you know why public pressure can convince Raytheon to cancel defense contracts with them that would have a significant impact to Saudi Arabia. Yesterday the US could have you know could put sanctions on Saudi Arabia I just don't think that's like you know even remotely likely. Do you think that anything happens from the private business perspective just I don't I personally don't and here's why. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They're generally not the nicest people in the world they runny really oppression of oppressive regime. That has a strict fundamentalist approach to how they look at things in the world. This is not a secret we've known this pretty much since we've been dealing with them since the seventies in the way that we have. I don't think we learned anything new. From what happened over the last week I think the only thing that really changed. Was this was much more out in the open and much more brazen and I think a lot of things that they've done previously. But I mean this is a regime that is. Effectively. You know at war in Yemen as we speak right now and not really making a ton of efforts. To keep civilians out of harm's way based on everything we've seen. I don't think this really late this doesn't tell us anything new about Saudi Arabia it's it's it's more of the same in my opinion here and so I think. Businesses. Are kinda gonna say look. People are gonna forget about this over time in as an notes cynical to say that and I think that's how businesses are going to react I don't see meaningful change coming out of this. Unless it's led from the top down and I don't see that happening. Yeah hey you're right it probably does need to be left in the top down the one area that I can see I mean. If you are a news reporter. You've got to be horrified in this situation yeah if you're somebody that reports on the Middle East and yes air frequently. You've got to be putting up huge objection to your employer talking about you know whether or not you and your work and there's I suppose that could keep it in the news for awhile that could extend elect this story. But you're right unfortunately these things tend to go by the wayside pretty pretty darn quickly. Okay here's what I'm curious to season have all these people pulling out of this conference that's coming up in a couple weeks called that the future investment initiative summit. I'm curious how many these same people go to it next year. You know that's what's gonna be telling me hey if if it's if it's something where hey a year later if companies and individuals are still saying no we don't we don't wanna do this page then you've got something here but. To this late and I don't see anything that suggests that that's the case here and so. I think that this is a relationship that's largely due to be back to the status quo. When it's all said and done the US in Saudi Arabia that they both have a need for each other I think the US probably needs the saudis a little bit more right now just because. There aren't a whole lot of allies in that region. But I think that this is something where you're not going to see a change just because both countries recognize hate we might not agree on everything that we need to work together. On things yeah I don't think you can change the relationship with us that general Saudi. Government but. You can choose which Saudi prince you deal with me I don't know if you can. Yeah I mean a you don't want an iceberg you don't wanna push regime change not I'm not suggesting that day. This is. An. Look if this stuff is about as bad as it gets a mean you're talking about what appears to be and again this is based on routes and torture. Gruesome torture in and likely murder. Of a parent of this journalist it's about as bad as it gets the I don't think you're going to see meaningful change out of it. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today but I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Available all the locations you can call we to bank 8776917900. Or visit leader bank dot com for more information micro star but with a look. At Procter & Gamble than normally. Pretty home stock up 8% today what's going on. It is to keep in mind it's down thirteen was down 13% year to date they had a pretty big beat on earnings scored a profit came in at about twelve a share which beat by three cents but revenue with the street really cares about. Was above forecasts as well. Base Arctic sales growth of 4%. So yeah as you mentioned the stock that is you know usually a pretty calm Bellwether is up nearly. Over eight point 3% at this point in time. You know amongst its time where it's difficult for to compete one of the areas of Procter gamble had really succeeded at in the past with gain that prime. Shelf space in grocery stores and you know Wal-Mart etc. and people are by and less their stuff in those places so it's tough for them to compete in some cases. Very good and that is Wall Street watch presented by leader banking leader bank has a wide selection of gold and silver bullion coins available all their locations. You can call to bank 8776917900. For more information. So the the mobile payments have been Mo which. I use a decent amount Tucker do you frequently frequently is Mike. I don't use that frequently. I do use it you know if I'm going to dinner with. A group of friends or something like that I use a pedestrian was the only circumstances that happens and what what does it do for people who are familiar with so for anyone not familiar it is you know and allegedly secure system three to transfer money from one person's bank to another. Rather than having to get that person's bank account number and you know full set of information you use this application as long as there are also signed up for it you just need to search for him. You see their of their profile picture log you know when you log in there and you can just seamlessly transfer them funds for free. That is no charge to transferring money between. One individual to another individual. So the big thing that they saw on invent more by the way is owned by PayPal they bought them I think maybe 45 years ago now. So the volume of payment that they processed in the third quarter rose 78%. Year over year. To seventeen billion dollars still only a little bit more than 10% of PayPal 143 billion in total volume for the quarter. But the big thing that they're starting to see. Is that more people are participating not just in the free transfers that you do to get money to a friend. But what they call monetizable. Action 24% of been Mo users are participating in that type of transaction now that's up from 17% in the second quarter and only 13%. In May of this year's almost doubling in a span of six months. Yeah and I was always kind of curious faster first I using this app exactly what Ben was doing to make money in this appears to be there because they don't offer ads they're not trying to sell you know thing on here which is not yet at least nice and refreshing you know not yet. But where they are monetizing seems to be on consumer to business and business to business transactions where years linking a credit cards here count. It's a year order and medial. For delivery and user and blow to. Complete that transaction they're keeping 3% transaction field. So they're keeping that above and beyond what the credit card processing billions so yeah now which seems like it would be pretty pretty. Substantial amount that you be paying your talking like 60% total than when you factor in credit card please yes or perhaps they have some sort of deal worked out with the credit cards today you know lessen that a little bit that. Pretty substantial. Button you know in the same thing happens with PayPal PayPal I think you pay two point 9% in the same transactions so yeah I am. Day really where the opportunity lies to them is they're starting to get integrated with you know companies so when you log in to grab war each you can log your band no information right in there and you can just seamlessly and no not entering credit card information just boom right real quick cloud and then go and complete the transaction. Let's go back to our poll question of the day since this is somewhat related to this do you feel more pressure to tip on iPad cash registers Tucker what kind of results we have. To this point has so far still pretty early here but 56 point 2% of our listeners. Say no they do not feel more pressure when tipping on the iPad cash registers. And we also have coupled Tex coming in one out of 50 wait. No pressure at all I hit no tip every time with L com. Your week you're not a waiter waitress you don't serve me. You don't get to CNN out of the 978. Hey guys spot on with the tipping our refused to tip for take. So that's the next place that I was going to do is to take they'll never idea idea unless it's a large order. So too well and I think it depends on the tech take out but if I'm buying something where they need to individually packaged a bunch of stuff that they would otherwise need to to serve on my plate. I think they're putting in at least as much work. To some degree as to just serving it so I tend to tip a few bucks on during take out if it's something like. Sushi where they've got you know kind of a complicated ordered and a wheat and separate combine a box of pizza that's a different story. I typically on and take out I'll still to 10% just because a lot of times. Workers do share tips that pooled tips a lot of restaurants don't and so on something that's take out from what would normally be a sit down restaurant and I'll still tip 10% just because hey I'm I'm not getting the same service that I was outwardly. If I were sitting down there. All the back and work is still being done so I do still tip 10% on takeout orders though obviously enough tipping your 20/20 5%. I mean outset but also. The delivered iron any day of the week obviously but calm you don't a smaller order for two people on on the line if it's a larger order than yell but I mean the real practical example here's what used to happen is you it's like the credit card you'd get a receipt and you discreetly right on that receive whatever you want now the you know where I feel depression I do feel more pressure from the pads. As you've swipe your card and you know while making eye contact the person is going to be receiving that. As well as a line behind you a year you know going to be selecting one of these things. Big screen I definitely feel the pressure to tip more than I do just by jot something down on the receipt that I hand back tipper a way really tough tonight eye contact in the press. Notes that knowing you strip clubs staring daggers like if you're getting a multi it's like look like it's it's it's done they're like you picked it off the shelf focus here's another example for you if you go allies such a you know Celtics game at Petit guard they don't those ipads that they turn around and argue are you tipping on a nine dollar fifty cent -- I don't start ams are there eleven dollars eleven dollar beer are you tipping on an eleven our border because I sure as hell am not a with this. That went through the roof. What I will do is I will tip just like a couple bucks just like usually the first time I go up to kiosk during game up. Up a drop a couple bucks and Aaron and I say hey I'm done for the night in LA that's kinda how wide I do things our men and I do the same thing through the kiosk now we're hey here's a couple bucks first time in and after that now. I'm again. Use port from its out. Realizes yeah Democrats sometimes bartender makes me a nice you know nice cocktail now and Hedo an old fashioned or I'm sorry I'm into that right as a different scenarios and if let's say that you go to just glitzy at the bar. And you get a beer you know even to the dollar on that beer. At a bar and exactly. Are so wise because it because it's way over priced at at a sporting act and it likely not overpriced the bar mill. We it is not over price the bar it's it's my get a a spotlight for five bucks Xbox at the dark not overpriced I get a whole case of them for oh yeah sure there will ever thrice but that's today at one varying degrees out what is Weaver moral is that what you're saying is that you're gonna punish the workers management taking a bigger cut means. That's correct that is courts or no it's backwards but you know eyes I've bottom line here. No I just wanna Dampier you know reasonable. Right so who else has an American you know also the bottom and mosque. You on Moscow's online specifically nice transition specifically is a just in put into it. I I. What I've caught the whole thing if they're ripping you I'd. You must just introduced a new lower cost Tesla model three now it's not that 35000. Dollar model threes that he initially seized. It's 45000 set of 49000. Got less range. Now he's saying that the 'cause you can get tax incentives. When you factor those in its downed under 35000. But that's not what we promised India and now. And I'm not saying that you won't eventually get that 35000 dollar. I think they're still gonna work towards that. And I don't know what state you need to live on live and to save 151000 dollars in tax savings and put maps California now I don't figured it next year in the northeast. Nonetheless. This treaty now I wanna see what options are getting with a 45000 dollar base model. V.s you're not getting all the tack that's in there if you're not getting the driver this technology if you don't you're not getting that. Then I don't I don't. That's us that's not you resigned the cheapest model 49000 didn't have all that either minority get that stuff you'd be up around sixty or 65 I have no interest in this so I'm gonna go I'm gonna take a look at the cheapest one and see what you can get so we will get. The the normal battery the long range battery they have that got you 310 miles a range. This one that they are offering now get to 260 miles of range that's not too significant difference of about. So cuts down their you have five color choices. But only one of them is at that price you can only get a black one at that price if you want any color other than black its gonna be at least 15100 dollars more and at the tussle site right now looking this up. For the interior you can once again get it all in black if you want any other color of the black interior gonna cost you more money. What else we have if you want the enhanced auto pilots of the the potential for driver Lewis stuff you're talking 5000 additional dollars for that. So that's up to fifth and that's not included there so the base 45 gets you an all black car with a black interior no other options. That that's what you get for 45 for. I mean in comparison to use a. The Mercedes are now do you suppose you're dating. A pretty decent price tag on this but I think both of those cars are gonna come with a more optioned out car that you are with the basic model via the Tesla. The other problem with this is you're taking and your putting a deposit with this company in I don't know how long to wait one of these things. Eyes of the knew when you mean there are six to ten weeks. It you have X I don't audibly I mean I think it's probably double that now I mean this you can say whatever you want any reps as you've never hit those numbers now it again I I love you on mosque for being forward thinking I love his design all of the fact that he's trying to push the limits on products executions never been as they at least. On time execution is an aura of an idea. Yeah he's again he's always been every single cars delivered his Bentley now okay it's it's one of the biggest problems that test has to get things done. On top. Let's take a break here and when we come back and tock met Cooper testing a new on demand the labor service but also whether oil prices continue their recent fall from the last week. Cushing and old guy for the month of October called Medicaid income trusts. Product to confess the average person. Is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong the need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid. Income trust or an asset protection trust you know their I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical and and and people aren't gonna know one player and others so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing as they play the taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court we can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up. And I door all the time. Also make sure on their car when you get their card to use the letters LLM after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trustees do unfortunately that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you want to have a flat feet. Regular note it's gonna cut you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave that you had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. So over as they prepare for their eyes now sounds like it's going to be in the first half of next year. They had that locally. Article in the Wall Street Journal but how they're targeting a 120 billion dollar valuation earlier this week which I think is just pure messaging on the behalf of the banks that are working for them. They are now apparently testing a quote on demand labor service. In order to provide. In poison attempt employees pretty much for whether it's in. One off events like weddings and things like that maybe it's he needs someone to come in for a couple weeks due date entry that they're trying to get into this business which leads me to the question. Why on earth to they think they're gonna be good at this. I actually amend disagree with you here I think that they. Have the potential to be able to pull this off you know there already pretty good at dictating specific terms to. You know on again contractors. They've got a pretty big network of people that could potentially bring into the us. I think it will be difficult than you do this in such a tight labor market. I think that they could be successful with this the only thing I think prohibits them from it. Is that their reputation has taken such a hit of the last few years that people might be hesitant to sign up for a but you know if let's say. Let's say you live in town and you don't own a car she can't drive for over which are looking to take a few bucks. I can have seen myself in my early twenties and you algo worked a go work a wedding two this plays a minute you know I've got a suit that I can Wear around a show up and go serve people there. Sure I guess my question isn't so much whether people would sign up to do the work yeah. It's what's the incentive for if someone's having a wedding. To go look Cooper instead of someone who specializes in that exact particular thing they probably already have relationships which I would hope price. That's over succeeded in what they're currently doing but it loses money on that stuff they do. So I just a look at in and where's the long term value what you need what can they do that someone else can't. I don't I just thank I don't know if I see this being of real value for. I yeah I think there's potential for them you know given their scale given their already existing expertise on paying these people on. Getting them into their network I think they have the potential to really do something here. And if they do I can see them severely undercutting you know the other staffing agencies that currently do this today and Gary you know we always say. Well now this company's got such expertise in it that. Hoover couldn't just step in and do that but you know what there are plenty of companies echo and disrupt industries that she threw it might have an area of expertise. As good point. A story in the Wall Street Journal headline is oil prices could fall further on rising US oil supplies OPEC report says to this I say well that's still knows. Look at because they just a week ago all that we are here was picked oil are gonna go through the roof because of this Iran I. Hey I just hate it feel like anytime I see oil stories in. Whether it's CNBC whether it is Ian Bloomberg the Wall Street Journal were a part is whenever whenever see story about the price of oil. Someone's trying to sell me something things and it's just oil. As a deterrent selling a thank you talk for federal. Thank you Tucker what what I'm trying to say is you're the every time that we've seen this it's O experts say this is gonna. We've seen before that they don't know what is actually going to happen in if you want a clear example this go back to the and a 2015. Oil futures prices for most when he sixteen in the seventy dollar a barrel range. And we went down to 27 dollars a barrel in February of sixteen. And none of the experts saw it coming so I discount an awful lot when it comes to quote oil. Well it really is a challenge because you don't have the fixed income options that we used to CDs bonds that were yielding 567%. That does not here anymore and wanted to take our treasuries like 310. In one of the real challenges I think is being able to keep up with inflation if you're an instruments that are always yielding two or 3% and so the conventional wisdom is hey you take your rates attractive from a hundred and that's how much equity exposure you should have I don't know that necessarily holds true for everyone today simply because if you're in a portfolio that sixty or 70% bonds I think you might struggle with keeping up with inflation over the next couple decades what about factoring in what you're living expenses are how does one do that yet to make sure the have a budget put together before handed figuring out what you actually need and what your retirement looks like it's a big thing that you need to figure out Ari can move to lower cost of living area there's certain expenses that falloff. Well you have will be disappointed with the way the market perform yesterday the good news in a market like this. They have to do is wait a day or two in the volatility swings back in the other direction right now. Gallup about a hundred in. Sixty points at the moment the S&P up 21 NASDAQ up 68. Everything pretty much in the green as far as all your major sectors they saw a nice broad based rally not fitness back everything that we lost yesterday. But I will see this to hold on as we head into the weekend accuracy of traders want to be holding positions. Now ovary weekend like this with a couple outstanding questions that are out there. Let's talk a little bit about housing and by the way it's chuck and Mike here today berries out for the day so you get chuck and Mike do we get Tucker here as well. And let's let's talk a little bit about housing we got existing home sales data earlier this morning. Existing home sales make up 85 to 90% of our housing sales in the country. And they came in at a rate 3% below what analysts were expecting to see. And for me. This starts to show you really that the tough situation at the Fed is in. Is on one hand you're starting to see more signs that inflation is coming both higher wages and some higher inflation data that we've gotten on the producer's side of things. On the other hand US and weakening data as far as what consumers are buying weak retail sales last month and a weak housing here. And so these are there any say we've got inflation coming but we're seeing weakness. On und you know boat people were buying. The Fed is between a rock and a hard place in terms of their diving hey we wanna be aggressive and hikes. I don't think they can't because I don't think the growth is there to support it. Not so much over the next couple quarters is I think things are still good for at least you know six to nine months but I think when I look out a year. I have real questions as to whether or not that their pace pike. Sustainable. If for some people you might elect me this and saying well yeah I'd make sense that we should be slowing down rigs and the craziness the scene of the last three years in the housing market and in some parts of the country that is absolutely true. But if you look at nationwide averages. 2007 this is a much. But sooner or slowdown that we saw on the housing market back in the mid 2000 yet. I don't have the concerns about the systemic risks that we saw during the financial crisis just as you don't have the crazy lending unit of home prices elevated the same way they wore. But I do have concerns. Just about the fact that you're not seeing consumers behave in a way that suggests this economy's going to strengthen in the nineteen you have the behaving in a way that suggests hey. You're seeing a slowing of growth. It doesn't suggest an overall contraction. At this point but it's a slowing of growth and the problem is when you see a slower growth economy. One off events that happen in Europe that happened in the Middle East that happened in China could be that being the tipsy over the edge there and think it puts you more at risk. Of that one off the Dodgers have interest in a kind of blowing things up for a short period of time certainly. So that's something that we're watching here. Also wanna talk a little bit about our whole question of the day. In this was raised largely. Due to new our own experiences. Kind of going out and shopping around. At a lot of restaurants really cafes that have. These new point of sale terminals the ones that have the ipads there where they put you know your order and in and they flip it over and show what you and instead of you know the old way where hey if you wanted to tip you can leave a tip just on the receipt to where you can cross that exam not giving anything. It gives you the standard options of hate you wanna tipping a 12 or three dollars on a two dollar muffin or do you want a tip fifteen or 18% just is someone handed you. You know for coffees. Ends its edge I think a lot of people feel a little uncomfortable we've heard from a lot of not cashiers who say it creates a really and comfortable transaction because you know the person sitting there like GM don't want it to be but I feel a connection to otherwise you gonna take on all the person. And so it creates a little bit of friction in a transaction the supposed to be making EO. More friction less and so our poll question of the day is do you feel more pressure to tip on an iPad cash register Tucker what kind of results we have so. Yes so far 55%. Of our listeners say no they do not feel more pressure to set. On the the light pat cash registers there. I am shocked even if you take a stance that I don't rest don't you guys feel the pressure but I still don't tip and that I. Distill that absolutely feel the pressure they're still arms does that do it I definitely feel the pressure to. Do you feel more pressure from the cashier or from the customers judging every night you can see what you do know that you have to pick everything you you have to packets a bucket of on capitol yes. Cashier put your cash are you gotta deepen what's ash and other cashier and I feel more badly judged by the customers cashier they're gonna get over they'll figure it out customers knows what is all behind you chuck within I don't feel judged broken. You know I can deal cashiers at a different deal you know. But I was cashier you know worked that job and how is like so exit so do you. Frau are you don't did you like not appreciate customers as much as they weren't tipping our tipping his. What bothered me so much it was customers who were actually root throughout any process more like tipping like. You don't know necessarily what are customers going through they might be go to financial tough times maybe they can't it be the same way that they normally would I don't blame customers you know it is. You don't know what's going on under the hood there. But that doesn't mean again just as they you can't tip doesn't mean you can't be nice because it doesn't cost anything to be nice to a cashier is look it's a tough job some times. So what bush got more under my skin wasn't customers who didn't hit me it was customers who were rude to me for absolutely no reason because. Looked just. You you don't have to do that that's something easily within your control tech set of the 508. I think feeling pressure or. Over this tipping situation is a little bit odd. No one is putting pressure on you Samie beaches guilt. Well there we have it could be you know my mother worked hard on guilt maybe paying off now. Let's talk about Dow DuPont today recorded a four point six billion dollar charged. In their agriculture unit what's this related to. He just to have seen a pretty big slowdown in the decline in valuations of agricultural sector is holed largely because of terrorist. And so with all of the accusations that acquisitions that they have made the really had to take good hard look at the value of their agriculture unit and in this case Santa record. That and you know what what we thought the stuff was worth was action worth four point six billion dollars less than tarnished last moments how much this these because trade related. You know. A good chunk but I don't think you would take a four point six billion dollar charge off if you thought a 100% that was trade related to trade related can be temporary dip. So I think a good putt portion of this has to be you know ray the goodwill and you know other stuff here just isn't worth what it was. It's about some of its street they did a good chunk of it's going to be but not all. We ever. Talked in a while now about Amazon HQ two witches. Probably the single biggest up project that somehow you know taxpayers don't realize they're gonna be on the hook for. When it's all said and done do all these tax breaks that Amazon's likely going to get. But Amazon apparently is revisiting some cities as they are trying to wrap this decision making process up by the end of the year. It was when we first heard about this was about a year ago now. God and feels like decades ago we've been talking about it was about a year ago but apparently they're going back out to. Soto prediction wall that we have was dated back to September 7 when he seventies and so oh victory over a year ago. And so I guess apparently they've gone back now to New York City to Newark, New Jersey to Chicago. They've also been following up with a couple cities like Miami and DC. A couple cities just haven't heard from them all a few months apparently Raleigh, North Carolina hasn't heard from the my guest. But it's so the only thing that I think you can derive from this story Reagan and his Rafa produced every week Jeff Bezos was spotted in Texas and they're gonna choose that does best is tracking yeah I think the it's like. Where's Waldo type of scenario here but I've I think the only real thing that I've been able to garner from this is there seems to be a slight. I don't know preference for a match rose city area rather than more rural area. I'm standing by my prediction that this is all missed direction. They've already built in Boise in the out of the snow is x.s and there's just to be paid like we've got Amazon Boise open back and it's. No one had any clue it was coming but it's there it's done and it's finished that's that's what I'm sticking with. And I think it's going to be a very big city I. I would very much doubt that team beat New York Newark or Chicago I just don't think that those states have the rights tax situation to allow Amazon to be there but bureau mostly. Let's let's just a different question we've we've asked before you know we're we think Amazon ends up with the second headquarters. When do you think they finally make a decision. I I'd have to hope that you buy your picnic. December 30 December 15. November 29 who. I'm going November 29 they're making this decision talking to put those up on the don't have to that would whilst what I is on the corners there. There's no point me do that we're not I'd put on record I was December 30. Mike will it's fifteenth. And chuck actually no I'm I'm tilting my AJ no you can't she noticed that I did a week no matter no detection and you know you cannot change it. On November 23 announced I want the 23 year I wanna explain why though Erica that's that's. Black Friday they're gonna steal all the laws from Black Friday you know what I like that take enough while changes. November 21 area over there I think that's pretty good right there is then also you get Cyber Monday the following Motley it's gonna be the 23. Me I won't do to dates that's not right. Chicago one of the most prolific rock bands in history they had their first number one hit with if you leave me now and so we're going to be asking trivia questions. About Chicago. As our trivia question today. Let's see what's a hit as good Winamp what was the band Chicago's original name Texas at 63566. And if you are the let's go with the eighth correct answer. Be an eighth correct answer you can get a fifty dollar gift certificate to seasons 52 again what was the band Chicago's original name. Texas at 63566. The eighth correct answer is going to get a fifty dollar gift stiffed it. This season's fifty. To. What are we doing now we're talking five G let's for those people who are familiar with what five GA is quick refresher course might. It's the new updated forgy. It's a new network they were going to be coming up. It's like forgy but it's fired Jeff they got an extra G advantage in their services Kabila batter. I geez Ben forty's it's a new network there's going to be going up really across the world the probably first year in the United States. It's going to be faster network for all different wireless phone providers to connect to. And there's real talk of this being you know. To the degree it's to be fast enough that you could potentially do away with you connected wireless. Technology coming into your home they'd be quite fast enough to be able to do a lot of the stuff they review this matter home just on wireless broadband. Network. Yes and it's got its got a ton a band with its got a ton of speed. The one downside to five GO over the existing forgy technology. So forgy technology does not require line of sight what that means is that your existing cell networks let's say that you have a tower on one side of a forest. It might not get all the signals through that force but we get a decent chunk through there just because it can go through that kind of matter can he can get through trees again get through leaves and stuff like that it's no problem. Five G unfortunately. Has all kinds of problems in that it can't do anything around objects okay. And when I say objects I mean literally anything they've had issues where certain coatings on glass bounced the signal back to where came from leaves get in the way blades of grass get in the way. All kinds of stuff can cause problems there the reason it's still so interesting. Is there's so much speed packed into this that it potentially as Mike said. Allows companies to no longer have to do all of the underground wire worker Elaine cable they don't have to go up on telephone poles the same way. It can potentially cut a whole bunch of cost a whole bunch of time. Out of building networks and that's why there's a lot of buzz about five G. That's why it's good for us. But the other thing we've been on forging networks now I think they first started about six or seven years ago which I think going back to 201120122. In the first four G networks came out. It's all these equipment makers that have been getting ready for five G Davidson able finally gonna have companies spending on this. The times now for them there they're going to be able to cash in on these companies buying five G equip. Which couldn't come soon enough trees Eriksson and Nokia have not been doing terribly well over the last few years. Their Christmas present day you'd kind of rely on big projects due to fund your profitability out and so. This will be coming down the pike for them they are facing increased competition from mainly Chinese competitors while away and CTE. Which probably won't be able to getting this technology here in the United States given our concerns about security but. Take a look at just about any other emerging country in this if any companies gonna win out in Africa or you are different countries. It's probably going to be the Chinese manufactures and not the Europeans. Also intact apple announcing October 30 event where they are expected to reveal new ipads in new Macs. Who players. And haters that matter the iPhone and care about Patton who buys these days you need with the giant phone that sitting in your pocket that's the size mired consumers some of us don't like to rip our pants putting our phone back in on me you know like that's that's kinda how life feel about it or how much of Apple's revenue comes from anything other than now much. Really. Not even like the desktop Macs notes it's a relatively small p.'s help I'm gonna pulled up right now just to you see those all over the place in those two run upwards to 2200 books if you get loaded. So Apple's revenue by product in this is looking at the third quarter of 2018 to the most recent data that we have now. IPhone makes up 56%. Of all revenue from the iPad is about 9% the Mac is about obtain the services so like all your iCloud stuff and all that is about eighteen but and then other meaning apple TV watching all that is about 7%. Between the I mean you have less than 20%. And that they used to be much heavier iPhone oriented by the way if you go back. The peak I believe was in the first quarter of resellers second quarter 1570%. Of Apple's revenue was from the iPhone that's action is expecting so much action a little bit surprised Amber's big thing right nailed it works about the T do you have any idea stats on the watch. It's in that other products or somewhere in that seven point 2% is apple wants but that's combination of the watched apple TV an abscess or reasons stuff like that battle ends up in that attic as I just feel like it'll be startups especially you feel everything is it's just Mac computers Mac computers and you can do the most with. Those computers and apparently this new line is going to be. Premature revamped and here's what's your surprise me it's only 10% so here's what's really interesting in this is this is kind of the way that the masses is. Kind of ended up working out now so let's say that I want to go buy a Mac. The connector. And I'm on the apple site right now just some mumbled yeah round nothing about it after axle laptop yeah Mecca is the laptop so I want to buy a MacBook from apple might. It's 12199. Dollars. And that's basics or the iPhone access. Is also about 12100 dollars tennis tennis whatever it is is also about 12100 dollars how many people buy new MacBook every year. Not many no idea how to people who refresh their iPhone every year here in the fast means there was the same price now. That's that's wild like that and I would lie about that it used to be young buying a MacBook for 12100 but the odd phone 600 so camp rather get phone. You can get in a you can get a laptop for the same price as your phone. You've got a laptop she just got ya and you've got an app rightly Ku crowd like. I don't know anyone actually thinks about it this way. It's just I find that really really interesting and the functionality and laptops with better as is someone who does like my idols. Mortgage rates coming back down a little bit this week. But we we continue to see supply crunches and as we talked about a little bit earlier. Still having trouble converting you know potential listings into sales right now. The average thirty year fixed rate this year has been four point 49%. Compared to 399 treachery seventeen and then this week that rate got to four point 85 that she came down I think is averaging closer to 5%. Within the last two weeks. And those rates by the way air if you have great credit he so. If you're one of the many people who doesn't have perfect credit doesn't have close to perfect credit. You know those rates are going to be anywhere from a quarter two gave the couple percent higher if you will are you significantly down there on the credit spectrum. Every week if this time Paula Monica from CNN business joins us talk about stocks that are moving in any given week. Today polls join us talk about Netflix Paul how Lauria. Do pretty well so Netflix. Appears to be getting back on track that some questions with their second quarter earnings. Seemingly answered with their third quarter may be no point to that second quarter being. And out liar as opposed to the start of a new trend. I'm curious what your thoughts are on this this quarter earnings first off. Yeah that's hard to find anything to really quibble with the the numbers were very strong across or at the revenue growth. Really solid earnings as well and of course subscribers much of the game. Going to be the metric that people continue to look at for the foreseeable futures. You'll adding significantly. Higher number. Eight crackers and I expected you know point six million. These drivers in the or it was very solid and much that coming from our international side that in turn about. You maturation last market are you know diminishing because. There's so much growth oversee. Well do the content costs associated with Netflix scare you and any way shape or form. You he can petered out. Scary and we're we're seeing even now that you know expand you know billion dollars a year obviously on. New content and a lot of it does really seen to be. Sort of just growing up all of the T-Mobile and can even things that you thought would do well like iron and it's just part ball. He needs more oil empire they'd be canceled that after two he could do it just wasn't showed a lot of people. Really NC I think that would mean a lot of risks in Germany at the office. It just a lot of can spend at these aren't. All out. Paul what are things that I find interesting here is this is a market overall this year. That even though it's it's still up somewhat for the year. It's a market that's gotten cheaper because earnings growth has outstripped. What we've seen as far as appreciation for the broad market. Netflix isn't in that situation they've gotten more than a standard. So. They're company even with this quarter you could make the case it's it's riskier today that it was at the beginning of the year stale. Yeah I think it. He is a very good argument against that they can counter that now at bat is that. Netflix C. Can you be overvalued for two decades that I mean that's really eat it when it comes to Amazon announcement. It's always been outside the IPO and keeps going up and out an opportunity to really discuss. People have state if what chip is doing in the in the numbers and a now prove it with all the growth there and I think with Reed Hastings and Netflix you have similar. He'll argue that this kind of you know culprit. Sort of or (%expletive) if you will people really didn't think it it. All in terms of competition for Netflix you know we we we were asking this earlier this week in terms of who the biggest competitors are. In my opinion. The one that's not appear streaming service HBO just because they have that subscription model and a 130 million subscribers worldwide obviously they've they've got that good base that's already built in. You've got companies like Hulu you've got companies like Amazon who even though they don't split it out they still have. A big streaming service who who is the biggest competitor in your opinion for Netflix right now. Yeah it's a tough question I think that's really difficult trying to figure out which it regards to. Competition a lot of people talk about how competition could be bad for any of these services. And my counter to that would be paid as long as the broader economy is doing well. It's not yulia kind of binary options and know that many people stay. Well you know what I did not commit subscribe to HBO pilot came terms because I. We can afford Netflix and I want to watch that in March the new black I think people are. Serie. A reaches consumers. Streaming content right now on you know most people on no on eight the Abbott and the stock options for you know about chairs and watch HBO they watch Netflix. You know various others as well I think it is going to be action he whether or not that these box. Streaming service that launches next year take aways be yet. You know traction from Netflix. Even there I'm not so sure that people are going to drop Netflix just ago. Paul one of the things that's missing from Netflix right now if you get all these other services out there. They all have some other kind of live content they can offer whether it's you know Amazon has some Thursday night football games and some soccer games even Twitter has some of those. You know obviously the legacy players like Disney and fox have sports news and things like that. Any chatter about Netflix getting heavier into those areas that's the one thing that seems to be missing from their portfolio right now. And I hit it definitely is something that. You don't have right now but I think. For the most part it's not something that I being. You know. It really feeling need to it into especially when you look at how. What streaming in this streaming media explosion at a time. To TV in general I mean why TP teams in many respects at the and antiquated notion on watcher talk about a big. Sporting a badger Ers. Being the band you know because of people's Barry is it buys time shifting. It is kind of what people do indeed is a bit mr. app out. Appointment by TV. Raw. Beef really is more about having that attracted the contacted you to watch app after watching whether or not that you know. 2 o'clock in afternoon if you work in the evenings or you know 8 o'clock at night yet regular days. Gergen Paul we've got to run now but thanks for joining us have a great weekend and we'll catch up with the I don't. Little bit we we we we we got a good one this year so one. Just gotta gotta get things moving a little bit got Goodwin going on I think it. Outstanding as Paula Monica from CNN business talking about Netflix ticker on them is NF LX. And though it's too quick little look at markets here as we head towards the top of the hour. Still positive movement in all three major US indices Gallup 76 points S&P up nine NASDAQ up fourteen at the moment. Oil right now opened up a bit to 6929. Less than 1% though gold at 1230. Up ten cents an ounce. Tenure US treasury just shy of 3.2 percent of the moon pretty much hanging at the same place it has been. For a while now so this is one of the overall we tuchman movement to this point and others still be a four hours left in the trading day here. Relatively quiet at this point. Yes send nominee start up a fair bit higher so rates given up a fair bit and guys somewhat quiet on this Friday. Been one of the most volatile months of the year obedience to see where we finish off in October pared its comparison to how volatile February it was because we have the potential to be you know it more up and down days of 1% that we did that confirmatory. Yes we certainly do that is all the time we have for the day and no we're just about wrapped up for the week since it is Friday.
