This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong in chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Well just because we're midway through the week doesn't mean that he is going to be a boring day we got the Dow off 260. Points we've got a potential emerging market crisis we've got planes flying on auto pilot. Whole bunch of stuff that we're gonna get into today and we've got a couple hours jobs that we are going to do. It's just that chucked out of here along with Christine Dunn the president of our point and Christine it's good to have you back in here it's been a couple weeks since we lost Teddy and I think that's right that's right thanks for having me today absolutely and Christina wanna open talking a little bit just on markets we are gonna touch on this emerging markets story. But I wanna start talking about where markets are they just because. October thus far. In the behind this month to equities. And by that I mean stocks overall we tickled the S&P 500 kind of your big broad index that we're looking at in the United States just to see you know where US equities have gone this month. We've gone from about 2930. Down to 2848. So which about a 3% dip that we've seen now. 4 of the month of October. Ends. In today's kind of continuing that when we open the show minute to go we're down 260 points on the on the guest on the Dow. Now we're down 280 ensor and pinball around here but you know I know investors out there but nervous right now just because. This summer was actually pretty common now it's hey we're kind of back to some of these ups and downs that we saw earlier this year. Right this is kind of the time of year for that is not as are heading into oh were at the beginning of the fourth quarter and people are. Wondering how the consumer's gonna shake out in the upcoming holiday season what that means the economy. Not to mention taking a look at Twain nineteen in the fact that the Fed is expected to raise interest rates three times over the next several quarters. So so a lot of news coming out and geno EU hasn't challenging news that test with but Sears preparing for bankruptcy. So lots of nervousness out there and it. And I do want to I'm glad you touched on the Fed they're just because I do wanna take a quick look at what we're seeing on that and effectively. What we saw this morning part of the reason why I think you may have a little bit of a sell off going on today. Is because we got numbers on what's called the PPI the Producer Price Index it's not as famous as the CPI the Consumer Price Index but it measures the prices that different producers of goods feel on the air input costs so as an example. If your company that makes nails it measures how expensive it is for you to get iron and steel for your nails if your company. That is Ian you know you make and two by force it measures your input cost for those two by fours the raw lumber and things like that. The PPI number came in at point 2% but the court number higher than expected at point 4%. And so what that means is that producers are seeing higher prices and eventually after pass those through. To bear customers in order to maintain their profits. So if they don't do that it means they are wise if they do with it means higher prices so we have one of two things that happens. Either earnings are diminished because they can't raise prices or they do raise prices and there's higher inflation which means the Fed is hiking more and that means. That you'll likely go to season continued pressure. On things like housing and so forth the typically are a driver of the economy. So that's what we're seeing today I think it's it's just a little bit. You know a little bit more on that front what's interesting on this on this sell off that's happening it is this is a fully risk off. Sell off what I mean by that is any sector that has a measurable amount of risk and it. Is down today and there's no sector that as more risk than technology at the moment technology stocks off north of 2% right now. Industrials off one point 86 consumer discretionary down one point 36. The sectors that are doing well is actually three in positive territory. Utilities again stable and safe. Consumer staples stable and safe and real estate which to move around and not entirely sure why real estates watt today. But you you take a look at everything else that selling off and it's moving out of a lot of the risk assets that had done well. Earlier this year. Let's go and talk about this story from the IMF the International Monetary Fund. They came out yesterday. And specifically. The managing director Christine Lagarde came out. And says it wrote we've got a situation in emerging markets that it could put some continued pressure on those economies. In the lead to some very real issues in a number of them here. Yeah I mean one of the things that they have been watching is the fact that capital could start flooding out of those countries at a pace not seen since the 2008 global financial crisis. And then you know a lot of people are trying to get capitalize of those countries are attracted actually to the rising US interest rates yet. So that's putting pressure on those markets. The strength of the dollar is also putting pressure on them because it's causing reductions in you know those you countries currencies. So you know you're seeing you know the potential for capital flight from market corrections and for foreign exchange movement across the board which can and which can lead to a crisis. This looks an awful lot that fuels an awful lot like what we saw back in 1997. Where you had the Asian financial crisis that really started in Thailand. And started largely because at the time. The the Thai currency was at it's it's known as the bot. And the Thai baht was effectively pegged to the US dollar in order to keep it stable time well what happened. Was that the Thai government couldn't maintain that pagan they had to float it. In order to be out of effectively tried to. You know keep the currency afloat and keep the country afloat in it ended up causing all kinds of problems throughout the region that ended up spilling over into the US as well. For a short time period there what worries me about this in this emerging market situations were far more tied in to these markets than we were twenty years ago it could have a bigger effect on the US and the effect is pretty significant. Even back in 97. Well and not to mention that foreign exchange on you know currency fluctuations aside there are vulnerabilities in the government debt distressed area. You know you have over 45%. Of these low income countries at a higher risk of debt to straps are already experiencing it according to the high enough. Which is compared to only 25% five years ago and in fact. We've already had a couple of these countries you know seek bailouts from the IMF and two of India Pakistan. You know ask for and I MF bailout you know earlier this year Argentina's now feasting that. So those high levels of debt are really concerning and Mikey sent have a clear impact as we ours is an inner trying to globally client economy today. And in this is clearly when you went if you point to what is causing this it is the strength of the dollar over the course this year as you mentioned. You know investors flocking back to the dollar with higher rates in Europe the dollar up about 8% for the course of the year. And that makes it very difficult if you were in these other countries to keep capital in your local currency just because investors say. Q why do what I want to hold the Argentinean peso if it's losing 40% against the dollar I could make 50% but still only get 10% of my money. It doesn't make sense for me to hold that currency and that's why you see money flocking out. Of those countries here. Along with this a statement that was made yesterday by Dallas Fred present Robert Kaplan. So that he wanted the Fed to hike rates three more times one in December in the two more at sometime next year. And then pause at that point to see if any additional increases. Harness definitely they're watching you know productivity. As one of the indicators are watching inflation there watching whether or not are starting a season bubbles and some of the asset in that people trading and on you know and they're trying to figure out what it. You know is their right what they called the new stroll rate which is a level of on read that neither spurs nor slows growth and that's that's kinda tricky I mean some. Some you know economic forecast put that in a median estimate about 3%. On you know some say it's slower so it's going to be interesting to see what they decide. Looking at what today's data has done I was I don't earlier announced checking out what we call the Fed Funds futures which are predictions for where the Fed's gonna raise rates. Going forward into the next year generally the predictions on this they go out about twelve months we concedes that the next October at this point we can't see beyond that to the end of the year. But the median projection if you're looking at it. There's a 36%. Chance now that there are three hikes in interest rates prior to next October largely unchanged from a day ago but that's up from just a 25%. Chance. A month ago and that's why you have seen interest rates rise a little bit. Over this time appeared as people are saying hey look I don't wanna get caught behind the eight ball. And you be holding long term debt need to sell this off of it were thinking rates are going to be moving up a little quicker than expected. By the way. Tucker and and I believe you have this on the board at this point. I am on team we are going to have less rights than expected I don't think the Fed's gonna be able yeah I think your prediction or official prediction is one high can twenty. That is just not that format on one hike in nineteen so we'll see what happens. I will take victory lap because it looks like it was going to be arraigned this year that fell pat myself on the back for that one out but it's always a new year so we'll CEO we get into. As we head to next year some sad news for an American a great American company Sears hiring advisors to prepare for bankruptcy filing. Yeah I mean definitely sad because it's such an iconic brand in such a part of Americana in a lot of ways but not surprising at all I mean given the rise in online retailing where they have Manila to keep up. And also just you know lack of investment in their stores. I'm you know Sears you know and then malls no longer really need those anchor stores as much anymore because the mall traffic is just down overall. On and so so unfortunately you know series is feeling the impact on those trends. This also does give me the opportunity to talk about my favorite items from the Sears catalogs that used to be around and and there's. All kinds of web sites that have these by the way. But some of the things that they offered back in the day this one is from a it looks like 190. Chu is the fall 1902. And they had the Heidelberg electric belt which sent electric currents the room. Kind of year you're your groin effectively to cure quote a week or deranged nervous system. This is a real thing this is reliable they sold for eighteen dollars back then. Other things that we have from 190. Accidents are the fall 19100 catalog. Got into fashion with Levy's plus Kate's. NC could have eight heap. And these look like they were going for eight dollars and 35 cents they would come very nice and leave their fur. Eliciting considered really high and at the time. I would imagine you know I've ever was walking around and keeps them but the best thing that we had we still in this wants from fall of 1932. The home kits that where you could literally order all of the materials for a house. They deliver it right to where you wanted to build it and you be able to build your house where he wanted. This is a home kit that was. 15100 in 29 dollars. For the entire kit now to yeah to build your house it looks like it was about 12100 square feet so about it a dollar per square foot. And it's it still is one of I think the most amazing things that is a company that would literally deliver you the materials to build an entire house. And now they're going out of business because they lost out to companies that wanna deliver to New York. House exactly exactly well and so unfortunate too because I mean they did you know carry on that the strong tradition of supplying home in the Ken more brand is such a wonderful brand appliances and everything's it was a real shame. Let's take a break here when we come back we're gonna talk about whether or not you're gonna wanna get on a plane when your pilot is a robots that is right after this break on the financial exchange radio network. We want to hear from you. I Steward batteries 263566. And let us know what you think about the stories we disguise your team to the financial exchange radio network. And select him at Q school you fly when your pilot as a robot. I don't want to I don't just say that I just think that you need the potential for arrow just to me feels too great and I would want a person there. Why just thinking need a backup always need a backup and I just I don't trust purer robotics fair outcome. It is just too much room for error an in the same way where I think humans can and leverage technology in order to back themselves up. I think technology can use a back up with some human tax. So. I think that's how a lot of people feel Tucker what's what's what's your thought on this air and has no pilot yeah I mean I'm a huge robotics guy overall book that would scare the crap after the to line. I don't know what to do so what I'm gonna kick you over to. Is the unfortunate incident that was Air France flight 447 which if you remember back this was in 2009 it's almost ten years ago. And this was an 8330 piloted by Air France pilots. Leaving from Rio de Janeiro heading to Paris. And the plane crashed at the medium out. I wanna say about a thousand miles off the coast of Brazil. In in the reason why effectively. Was that pilots got an airspeed indicator that was telling them that the plane was moving in a different way from how would actually was. And they made adjustments to try to get the plane back to where they thought it should be. Not realizing that 'cause it was dark because it was I think a little bit cloudy as well. That they were completely disoriented the plane was pretty much fall straight down actually one of the more horrifying things have ever heard of in a plane my point is not to blame those pilots but simply to say that. We we often think humans are going to be able to step in and say oh the computer's doing this wrong I know what to do when in fact I use this as an example to say. Humans make those same mistakes too. It's it's not that humans I think your any better at being able to avert those mistakes but I think sometimes we just like the fact that. We can look each other in the eye and say okay even if you make a mistake. Eighties you're human I get that. When I look at the way that most planes are flown today. The bulk of the pot that the ball with a flying is done by auto pilot and it's. Typically landing and take off for done manually some pilots engage the auto pilot pretty quickly afterwards others might wait until the playing gets above 20000 feet depending on the route in what they have to do and so forth. But I look at and so much of it is done automatically anyways. I don't really have a problem with moving to full auto upon. You have a situation to prison stranded them with that female pilot. That did an amazing job was not over the summer. It's an amazing job on his Southwest Airlines office Elena window and us opens a new computer you know block. I just don't think that they mean she wins she was feasting a situation. Where I mean she had to override everything house right and react quickly in the economically and real time. Using the context of of all the information that she had in front of her that you know that her staff winner in a scene you've I don't think you'd be able to communicate. In the same man with a computer in order handles. So. I tend to disagree I think computers are better handling large amounts of information that humans are okay. I think if you want you know just about any evidence of that. Look no further than just about any poll that's been on an election the last couple years specifically big ones anything Briggs a related 2016 the presidential election. Humans were pretty bad it actually predicting what was going to go on there even though the polling was actually saying hey here's what's going to happen. The polling was all pointing towards these new pretty concrete things. And humans were interpreting it saying. Know that saying this but here's what it really mean. It's technology also was largely manipulated in this situation here and in their lives you know any campaign in but the problem is technology problem is manipulate. It manipulated humans. And what I'm saying is let's keep the human out of the equation because we are able to be manipulated we we do have been viewed differently and is that we looked at things through and I think. That when we can look at something like flying a plane. And especially since so much of it is already done by computers. I don't have a problem handing over the rest of the I don't so that's my personal view. But this does bring us to our poll question of the day which is up right now on financial exchange showed dot com you can go and vote. Well you fly on a plane piloted by a robot now you don't have to actually have you know robot that walks down the ounces say thanks for flying on American today that would be funny though which would be great I think would be lovely if they had one of those but the question is will you fly a plane that's piloted by a robot I am on team yes on this one Christine I'm guessing you are on team now. I am nineteen OK Tucker. I'm on team now I'm out I like the less you hire an actor who can like where pilots had an out of feel much better like to see what Matt Damon flying your plane death go to great. The pitches a comfort level Anatolia news it's as stupid and I just like knowing that there's a human you'd like to know that they're wearing a hat yeah so you can head over a little pent up and yet and that. They can maybe give you know those wings to the kids and everything it was gonna let the analogy to be a fake pilot to someday you know like you to be good that's so anyways head over to financial exchange show dot com and vote in our poll question will you flying the plane piloted by a robot. And then also if you wanna Texas about how dumb my idea is you can text us at 63566. And let me know why you wouldn't fly on a plane piloted by iRobot. Tucker what kind of results to we have on the poll question right now would you fly on a plane piloted by a. Roebuck yeah no shock tears does surprise or no shark whatsoever tell was leading via way or our listeners ship at 61%. That they were not flying a plane piloted by rope watched. We get some we've got some techs that are coming in is well off from 978. I'd rather have a robot in the pilot who crashed into a mountain on purpose. Well I don't think Haslem it it did happen in Germany actually it was German pilot. I don't know if it was in Germany but a German pilot who'd been suffering from depression. Block the other pilot out of the cabin and crashed into the side of the mountain so it was really sad situation bad thing maybe a year or so ago. From 50 wait no I think hacking imagine if on the Apollo moon landing. Our string of take over due to a computer fell well here's the thing when we talk about. Hacking your assuming that that computer is network to connect to other computers. If it's not vain hacking is not really a problem you like you can't hack A super Nintendo you can't hack in Atari. Because it's not connected to the Internet all it needs to be connected to air traffic control somehow wise the computer have to be. 'cause they need to go ahead to land. The wide and you're missing you're you're missing the the critical point here why does that set what is that section of the operating system have to be connected to what actually flies the plane what you need somebody whoever's in the air traffic control the land the plane. To get the go ahead so that there needs to be some sort line mutation between the tower in the plane but why does that system have to be connected to the one that actually flies as what is when I'm getting. I just literally told him. They know they talked a teller a note no minorities. You're saying that air traffic control has to be able to talk to one system on the plane. What I'm saying is why is that other system have to be networked and it doesn't have to be. Think about it this way Tucker when you go and if you've got what do you have an iPhone six iPhone death success does that have the the fingerprint on yet. When you press the fingerprint them you know where that fingerprint goes no. Ticket yes. On the phone exactly it's stays on the phone the entire time right it doesn't actually send it back to anywhere. On and so it's not actually talking apples are so anyway how with the plane know when. Lance think about it this way when you make you know this summer when when you make an apple pay purchase out. You use your phone and in that fingerprint scanner right rate your fingerprint is never sent to pitch with two where the transactions processed nine yet Anderson a percent. I think that's a different analogy isn't it because I think attackers saying is that like their house to be connection between. The receiver of the between Russian and the sky and then and then. I agree with that adjustments on the plane I I agree with that but what it doesn't have to do was it doesn't have to be interface with what actually steers the polling. So I I I I do. Because it is just going to be planes that are delayed her. So I'm running I had I schedule and what about the planes and it seemed like so what's so what's the concern when when you talk about hacking the planes. What what what is this excessive concern. Is that somebody else is gonna take control play in what I'm saying is you separate the control right. From what actually what tells the plane where to go in that we are many have a half a mind talking about hack talk him out everyday use of the plane landing. But what I'm telling you you can separate that is still ahead they need to go ahead for America trying to. They need to go ahead but picked Tucker when went idea of apple to go ahead right to actually send them my fingerprint. Not exact that that's what I'm saying the so you can separate those systems only attackers analogy. And it's the exact same thing. I don't think it is a you are not just premium on Eddie's a vis some sort of line of communication between the earth I know in the sky but it doesn't have to but it does not have to send all of the information Mecca. Mostly like you can keep the information security in the local system. And not have it be accessible just like the iPhone does with what's called the secure enclave with you fingerprint. That figure Britain ever goes to apple circus. Then he can do the exact same thing on a plane carried lets us back to other stories since I'm not gonna convene a country that's just not computer work. Whatsoever and let's talk about Softbank taking a majority stake in we work in office. Effectively. Really it's a company that leases office space more than anything else that loses a ton of money to their investing billions of dollars in. But there's been such rapid growth of these spaces I mean these kind of communal spaces where you know a lot of particularly you know small businesses or. Independent on consultants will gather and work in the shared office spaces. Oddly it and the proliferation have you visited some of them here in the Boston area. I've seen in their bare no ice you know today I look at it and I see so many bells and whistles that people want to pay for because it's. Oh they've got these you know we you know they've they've got designer lamps and all of these spaces and oh they've got ping pong tables that are of the highest quality. And I sit there and I say. When the economy goes bad who's gonna pay for the. Well and also I just personally find it really distracting intact unique kind of feeling you're in this I now. Factory you know seats were just trying to kind of dynasty ignorance it. But yeah the everywhere and Imus interested to learn about how we work has this whole vision of like in the uber that wants to create like it's invested in the school recently. On its thinking about running we work apartments and gyms and all of that. So I was actually kind of intrigued by the fact that the model extends beyond just shared co working space. But also all these other things as well. Did not making money though. Right older players saying that there investing in all of these leases and everything in order to you. Minority you know capture the market but that some they have. To me as funny because when when eventually if you can't find venture financing win the things don't go well what's what eventually happens business cycles don't last forever you've got to be able to pivot and say hey we needed new. Figure out how we're gonna actually make money otherwise we're going out of business so I look at companies like this I think it's great that they're growing quickly but. At some point you've actually got to figure out how to make profits otherwise you're not really an invest ball company for the long term. But also they've been marketing themselves and kind of positioning themselves kind of it's almost like technology play but they're not a technology play their real stats like exactly. So apparently didn't do a good job selling the robot plane we're now down to 35% of people who would fly and it's so I am clearly not the spokesman for. The robot plane. It's just it's I could I just I'm not connecting with people on this though I think I'll probably be the only people on those planes. Bucks. Such is life. I think we need to see an extended line of success. You don't with these robots and I wanna see that done on. You know the FedEx planes and UPS planes you know we're humans are you implying what sort of sarcastic and just you know if a packet if their plane goes down by error. It's just a bunch of items something in the world. Now stock humans on us. So that's a line of testing you need to do. I just look at all the auto pilot stuff that runs everything right now I don't know bats and I had there now robots following your points for most time here on them. Under center in somehow weekly you take away human it's that we can't do that there is taxable it's like does it doesn't have to be like that you. You can't just say it's. Hackable the whole acting thing is kind of pour argument because. You know if plane can be hacked today you know with all the blocks and how is human going to be able to decipher that you've you know prevent hack us. You can build more secure systems I think if there is if you're looking at you know hacking is a reason to not have a robotic plane that you probably should be listening to our show. Has recruited hat is real like literally like. Any time you're using like any technology that's connected to something else it could be hacked like if you're really that concerned about it don't go to an ATM. Clearly it's it's it's that simple if that's how concerned you lord don't go there that take precautions. In say okay here's what I want to do to prove to reduce the risk of it. But if it's all this to be hacked. Oh and don't go outside the lake. If it's just think it's it's I don't know what else to say he'd you're using so much technology it's impossible to get away from a completely. Struggled a bit about snapped out this company. Continues to see their stock price dwindling here. They are down 30% over the last month now. If you go back and look at their all time high which was shortly after their IPO they were north 25 bucks a share. It down to 67 the right now. What's going on here Christine. Well right now they're saying that they are running out of cash and so that's the big thing but you know. Recent never good things is never a good thing that their recent update their attempts try to innovate the product. Has not gone over well with consumers and so they've had you know. Users kind of tail off because because if you look in like the way the app with operating at do you snap Catholic there. I don't I used for a little bit a few years back my friends and I would sense and don't stuff back and forth to each other. Kind of just moved away from it just because I didn't feel like I was really getting anything from I know it's really popular kids I know there. All over yeah my own daughter is it's it's irregular way of communicating I mean it's beast is that they're alternative tax in a lot of ways and and they still do like texting groups and everything. But but I did find the use net quite a bit for communicating have you asked her why she prefers to texting. You know I don't. It's necessarily. On her first to texting it just seems to be a different way of organizing people to their CC more a social element around snapped chat where is the taxi groups tend to be focused around. Cushing and old guy for the month of October called Medicaid income trusts. Todd I have to confess the average person. Is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong the need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid income trust or an asset protection trust you know their I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical and and and people aren't gonna know one player and others so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing ST yeah. Taxes estates trusts you know that's if they're busy running their personal injury court we can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up. And I do little time. Also make sure on their car when you get their card to use the letters LLM after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you do or tell you that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you want to have a flat feet. Regular note it's gonna cause you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. Then when you came it. Good advice from Todd let's keep you got a copy of their October guide regarding Medicaid income trust you can call them told free. 866. 8485699. Vote on our dearly poll question had financial exchange showed dot com while you're there fire of the media player and watch the show while you work. This case the financial exchange radio network. So bad news for the robot planes. My poll numbers continue to dip. We're 31% yes now 68%. No. Apparently no one wants to fire robot plane with me which means I'm gonna have a whole roto myself which is going to be phenomenal. You all can stick on those full piloted flights but I'll have a hole wrote myself. And when guys would be cheaper to thank. Or be the same price that would change so I think their try to keep at the same as much as they candy yeah my guess will be pretty close me the biggest cost that airlines have are typically fuel costs followed. Pretty closely. I think by just all the regulatory stuff we you know we are engaged in this and that I know pilots are obviously expensive but. You know pilots they're not making you know 100000 dollars a flight rights located near their legitimate expense but. I don't think you see a huge shift in ticket cost just is mean of fuel and maintenance are such big pieces there. But I can pull some data on that. Not as we go here some breaking news that we just got flashing across earlier that CVS Aetna deal. That miked mentioned was likely to get approval today. Get approval to. Dot com. With conditions with conditions. That the likely condition we're still trying to get some data or some information on what exactly those are. It looks like the condition is that it is gonna have to sell its Medicare part. But I don't see any other potential conditions. But will continue to keep you updated on that. Travelers the insurance company is gonna start selling home security gear on Amazon this is an interesting mix here Christine. Yeah I kind of really interesting but it's it's really moved by travelers to try to meet customers were they are and not as many customers are buying it on through agents in fact there is a shifts towards buying things online. And sit travelers is making a move by. Getting on to Amazon and and selling. All these homes security products at a discount to current travelers customers and then encouraging people to purchase insurance to travelers wipes. I do wanna go back to the airlines soared briefly about pilots just I'm again I'm. I I love airplanes so I get kinda caught up on these things. Fuel costs typically this is according to the airlines for America web site. Who knows. Fuel expenses and make about 21%. Of all expenses that you pay for a flight. Federal government taxes make up 20%. Labor makes up 17%. Now. Labor keep in mind is not just the pilot it's also your data agents your flight attendants. Your maintenance crews and so forth luggage and then non labor and non fuel expenses make up 41% of those are being a whole bunch of different areas but labor overall makes up 17% my guess is that pilots are probably. Between 2030% of that so if you had no pilot it might be 5% cheaper but I don't think you get much below that will be my guest. Now back this Amazon stores are for deeper ellington's. I like playing its when we talk about this Amazon and in travelers story here. I do think it's enter staying. The travelers is is moving in this direction here. Just because. You know in the incentive for travelers is look if more people have security devices and rain monitors and so forth. It becomes cheaper for them to ensure against losses. What I'm curious about is if travelers is a selling their own products it's you know different brands and curious how travelers ends up making money off this when it's all said and done. Well it's more about establishing I think a presence on Amazon for Amazon itself moves into your insurance. Do you think they well yeah I mean I think Amazon is slowly finding different markets that it can take over and the fact is is that there's rising interest in buying insurance and filing insurance claims online. The travelers is leveraging a platform that exists. And is is saying okay we're gonna meet you where you are. Do you work with a dedicated insurance agent or do you just go on to be you know whatever website you go on to and buy it on line what's how do you typically all right now I work with an agent that I did on that because they demand research online so I get more market will be kind of online absolutely interesting. And Christine stuck with chuck runs that's the only reason I went there. No I really stuck with him. Will happen here but you've got checks out and Christine Dunn Christine is the president of our point. Two of us are here to. Tickets are pretty much everything we've got to go through today unfortunately which was a better day in markets right now. Now but it looks like we've got a pretty steep sell off that is now underway Dow is off 350. Points at the moment little north of 1%. The S&P is off about one point 3% the NASDAQ tech shares really take it on the chin today. Off one point 9% on the NASDAQ and we take a look at a sector by sector basis. It is technology that is getting hammered today the tech sector is a hole in the S&P down 2.4 percent. Rating on with industrials and energy which also gotten hit hard so pretty much anything that has any risk attached to it. Is Ian sell off mode today. This started quietly this morning though Kristi Knight I came in. Dow futures were off about sixty points. That we might get a little bit of a weak open. And then we get this report on the PPI the Producer Price Index which is really an indication of what you know big producers are paying for their input costs so you know the cost of steel the cost of -- the cost of grain what do you know all your input costs. And the court number there came in hotter than people expected. And I have to imagine that's one of the main things that's driving this just is what it has done here is you take a look at interest rates they continue to stay. At their highest level in the last seven years and that means that it's more expensive the bar which means that you're probably going to see the economy slowing a little bit. But so much talk. News in general I mean also overnight hurricane Michael upgraded to category yet storm. I mean Bloomberg is reporting that the storm has the potential to cause sixteen billion dollars in damages. Not to mention the productivity issues. Eruptions in business and even the SEC said in a statement today that its closely monitoring the impact of this on capital markets in on investors. And they're thinking about you know trying to assess the need to extend deadlines for filings and other regulatory requirements. In order to allow for people down there in the floor. Florida Panhandle to deal with the storm not have to worry about all these other things. So we'll keep you updated on markets over the course of the show just to see where things go. Other things that we are watching today or poll question of the day up right now on financial exchange showed dot com. I am getting destroyed on this one at the moment so I guess I'm just the worst person try to promote this in May be able to stop. Our whole question is will you fly on a plane piloted by a robot. I've voted yes but it doesn't seem like. Much support talker no you don't at all. Now it's yeah I mean and people are comfortable with Rabat flying them you know how better the results right now 7% of our listeners are saying no to do not agree with you and I think that's about the same that we got to drive those cars are right. In terms cars as a little bit more like in terms of favor I mean this airplane. Here. Yeah so. So there at the counterpoint all of this is robots flying most of our planes right now with pilots sitting there who occasionally step into it to do things depending on news of them to make flight path changed attempt to divert and so forth. Robots five most of warplanes right now most of the time. This year. We had that horrible southwest incident where the one we got partially yes sucked out of the window because of an engine that exploded. But that was the first US commercial aviation deaths since 2009. So. The robots do put it up for the most part. Yet there's still a letter urging him and I mean not too humid there is but all I know is that when we put humans in drive of in charge of driving all of our vehicles we have 40000 deaths a year. Again this is an airplane and I know it's an airplane but the robots for most of the most of the time yup we have to humans. You know you know it's if you look like. Everyone points to people I wanna look dual cockpit with. Just nothing in there and destroy sticks that are moving ministers were you wouldn't have joystick if you don't have a pilot or whatever you know you'll be empty yeah. And people don't wanna see. That's all those who cure people want to see actually actually makes things safer and cheaper people are stressed out enough as it is humans on the content I got to take out of the cockpit but a talker that's a people problem nor the world I know I fully understands of people it if people can't wrap their minds around the fact that something might be safer now. That's not the robots fall well it's not you know that's that's like saying. A late week we shouldn't they I can't even a trying to Figo like compare bull here just something that's going to be huge difference over the last like ten years that yet it's a little scary to think about but it actually works way better. If anyone has any ideas to Austin but. I just I find it amazing that we're so distrustful of robots and yet we just trust humans we say humans can handle it when it's been proven time and time again. That we hit a lot of cases it's it's not that I don't trust pilots is the robots or. Really really good at what they do Merck and I'm so I'm just a big believer and I was having a backup plan. Yeah with the humans have a backup plan but the robots the rabbits have a backup plan to humans I just think let's combine the two. You know teamwork is I was the better option here's. Other problem with continuing to have pilots operating in smaller and smaller roles as robots do more. Is there's actually been a number of studies done with regards to pilots the pilots that are trained today and they grow up on today's systems don't actually pick up the skills they need to be able to react in a crisis. Because they're not piling the plate enough to be able to know what to do. So pretty much there's so reliant on the auto pilot and on their instruments and so forth that when something goes wrong. They don't know what to do the same way that a pilot would who who would been trained thirty years ago. Knows what to do because they grew up in America when they were much more hands on with the plane so I even make the argument that because of the way pilots you train today. Shorter training times as well as more reliance on systems. Newer pilots that are being trained don't necessarily have the skills to be able to do that. Anyways so I mean that just goes to kind of defend a man I'll kind of issue across the board across different industries in terms of education exposure to different situations ramming you see that even health care there was. There is a story recently about it. Some innovations and a maternity ward in a hospital I believe on the South Shore. And how they're looking at trying to reduce cesarean births. Because there been such a reliance and trying to control the purse snatched necessary Mercer through the roof and a lot of doctors didn't have the skills. And seem to be able to Jay handle you know breech births and unusual purse so there trying to bring that factory team motto on. I just think it's interesting just you know we rely on technology so much that like you said we're not giving ourselves. The time we need in order develop skills and I think that there is an argument to be made across the board across different industries. Are reinvesting in that education. And teaching you gotta do it. You did bring up this this actually I'm I'm gonna hijack your point and completely user try to make my point out that I'm sorry I'm advanced. Putts. Robot assisted surgery. We see this used in a hole and of common procedures right now. All over the place we see robots that are being used to do surgeries that traditionally have been done by hand with a doctor but we see them being used. Because. They're often more efficient in more precise than a doctor Camby and some of these surgeries we don't say. No I wanna doctors there to do that we say pave the robots. Just as good if not better in some cases in doctors have said yeah you know what they actually are and so you see robots being used more commonly. In a lot of these cases if we can trust robots with surgery can trust him to fly a plane. I guess that's where we stand on that so you can either. Text it to 63566. And I'll continue to take all the punishment that's coming my wakes I know have an unpopular opinion on this. Or you can also vote in our poll question of the day up right now on financial exchange showed dot com. Will you fly on a plane that will be piloted by a robot. All ordering and and also now in West Palm Beach, Florida check out our web site had financial exchange showed Doug come and find the station closest to you. This is the financial exchange radio network. And joining us now on the line is Marshall Allen from port probe public. You talk about how employers are trying to battle back against high health care costs Marshall thanks for joining us today. Marshall before we get into what employers are doing do we have any data on just how bad the problem of health care costs have gotten for employers these days. Well here and believe you about it through your employer you probably have noted how year after year or cost keeps going up your benefits keep going and getting worse. And down your out of pocket spending keep getting higher. And there really is affecting. People's take home pay you know about a 151 million Americans. Get their benefits through their employer and literally the costs keep going up every year now for decades. So can you describe some of the things that you outlined in your article specifically some of the cases. That this this one in Montana. What companies are trying to do in order to mitigate those costs. Well I did a story about. The month and I can only benefit plan and that is a planned for 30000 state employees and Montana but it's definitely a larger plan. And this story is about a woman named the Maryland bar is an accountant very savvy woman who took over the plan. And decided to push back against the high health care Cobb. Basically when she took over that planet when he fourteen it was going Perot I mean it was projected two leaders. About fifty million dollars in the coming years there and to be bankrupt and so they had to make changes. And what she'd be ahead is she decided to push back against the high credit hospitals. And that her own prices and basically make the expensive hospitals take less money. How that worked. Well it actually worked really well I mean it was a tough battle but it started way it I think the prices of the hospitals and that is actually easier said than done. She had to basically work where it another vendor it helper compare the prices that she was paying. What Medicare is and then watching it he is that. Hospitals were charging anywhere from two times the Medicare rate to five times the Medicare rate and the plan was paying those high prices. And so she she that the pride and basically went to the hospital instead. Take it or leave it were the ones paying the bills and if you want to be or Asian you need to take less money. And it should be able to persuade all hospitals to get on board with the new Chrysler arrangement. Show us a little bit about it on I I know that Medicare is often use is kind of a benchmark bit you know if you look at is there any way to look at kind of the real costs. Hospitals are facing as opposed to use seeing that benchmark number has. You always hear about how. You know because of one set of populations costs are passed on to other populations you know within the system and so I'm just always countries of the real costs are. Well you know that's a great question and the problem is that the hospitals have never had to justify their actual cops. And so they're standard way of building a fence here bill at an extremely high amount and then give discounts based on insurance company contracts. And so if you're insured you're supposed to get this special raid. From the hospital but the problem there is that these grade they're really that. Based on the negotiating leverage their different insurance companies and different hospitals in different markets. And so the actual crisis the pace and end up paying insured patient and a Ping An Insurance plan than that paying. Are actually associated directly with the cost of providing the care itself. Marshall in a lot of cases is there any incentive for an insurance plan to go out and searched and push people towards. The cheapest alternatives has. I don't think a lot of consumers what what when they're going out let's say that someone has. You know it a medical condition that they need treated maybe it's a heart condition and it could be a kidney condition whatever it is. Individuals are looking for the best care for themselves but. As yellen in this article the same procedure could cost you three times Mort a different hospital in not necessarily getting three times the level of care. What incentives are there for insurers or patients shop around at this point. Well patients a much greater and the we've ever had because more of these pastor being passed on I mean you know we have rising deductibles now OE crust you agree. Year after year we're seeing the first dollar on all the care and it it's common for people have deductibles of 2000 to 5000 dollar you. And it your deductible about tie that in all that money is coming out of your pocket before the insurance even expand. And so more and more patients are realizing wait and I need to find out what I'm paying for. And so you know people like are you in this story and other expert are you would say that. You should always now demand that they explain what they're charging you or they need to give you an itemized in boys and they need to actually justify those costs. And the more patient can be that the more hopefully. Hospitals start providing the price that that car. Marshall what are the other pieces that you outlined in this story here wasn't just targeting. Hospital cause but also prescription drug costs what would you find out of this case in Montana. Well so the prescription drug costs have also been skyrocketing and a lot about it. I mean that increasing cost is coming from the middle men who provider of pharmacy benefit the cult pharmacy benefit managers. And they're the ones you know one company's insurance company might manage the medical side of your benefits. The pharmacy benefits manager won't manage the drug the drug side here at. And this middleman has been operating with a lot of different schemes like in Montana. They looked at something called the spread and the threat as just where the pharmacy benefit managers. A big LB employer paying the bills that. And they cost you know fifty dollars to fill prescriptions when actually it cost 25 dollars while the scripture and so they just. Albeit where I asked if he and then they pocket the extra 25 dollars and that is something that is illegal because it's written into the fine print of their contracts. But it's it's not something that in many employers are aware when they sign up for their help benefit and that they're very common scheme. That happens every day in the industry. And what in the month and that way and Marilyn Bartlett started digging into her pharmacy benefit contract. She's that they were losing a lot of money in this Brad. And so she booted Earl pharmacy benefit manager and chief one that would operate without this Brad. And that was it that if that plan millions of dollars. So is that kind of a reference to some of the side deals and kickbacks and lucrative clauses that you found and they you alluded to you in your article. Yeah about exactly right in the project and doing this year's really looking at the way we paper health care and digging and all these ideals and I think patients don't realize the rising cost of care isn't just because the carrots bell has gotten more expensive. It hasn't gotten more complicated to you statement here placement. You know this year than it was five years ago. Port at Europe and extra in fact a lot of that technology is exactly the same. There's a whole network they're layer upon layer middle. That are pulling money out of the and finding new ways to keep taking more and more money for employers and from workers and that's why we keep paying more and more money. Thurgood Marshall we've got to run but thanks for joining us they were really appreciated thanks for putting this together it's great work thanks you degrade our and that is Marshall Allen from pro Republican talking about employers in the cost of health care and certainly. You know just about anyone in. You know you could pick any time period you want the last five years ten years twenty years it's not just that healthcare is gotten more expensive but that. While more that cost being pushed towards individuals deductibles continue to rise. Just because the overall cost of insurance is. It's it's not right not to be completely honest and you know do it's we who in it in its so hard for us to ms. Those cost changed because some will say OJ the cost of a you know your plan went up by 5% this year. What went up by 5% but your deductible increased by 20% so how much more you actually paying two really tough to measure those changes. Absolutely and you know as our population. Demographics shift for having aging population are only gonna see more pressure on the system and got to figure out. How to start managing those costs that are so we can make sure we can provide quality care and I think that that. We focus so much on the cost side that I have and think about the actual delivery and not that great quality that are preventing. Absolutely. We ought to take a quick break but when we come back. We're gonna have trivia here on the financial exchange and also we're gonna let you know. Who is taking a bigger stake in Starbucks and who thinks it's going to be going all over the near future. That is all we have all the time we have on this segment will be back in just a little bit with a whole lot. You gave it really does change and specifically war go to Morgan income generation mindset and it's difficult today because if you look at a lot of the ways that people historically did that CDs yielding 5%. Bonds yielding five or 6% her you don't have those tools available anymore seat need to make sure that you're still adapting your portfolio to the new demands of retirement. But you need to make sure that using the right instruments and so that can be combination of dividend paying stocks can be equities that you simply think gonna grow and pull little principal off there. Hedge fund is just not had a great couple years here. Is taking a stake in Starbucks or rather revealing a stake in Starbucks. Yeah he's been historically known as an activist investor although I'm not really sure he's positioned himself as the in Starbucks but it's interesting to Starbucks. Yes cervix has been facing a number of challenges and in one of them is just the fact that people don't wanna sugary drinks of their truck pitino's aren't quite as popular as they used to be. But they've also had to kind of slow growth and a lot of ways on they announced closures to about a 150 stores coming up in fiscally you're 2019. Which is three times the average number of closures that they've had previously. On they're looking at the urban markets to open up but they're slowing growth for their lights in stores as well like insurgency in supermarkets ya like that. Sued depth audit challenges there it's going to be interesting to see whether or not he kinda activate and decides to push for other changes start. Is one of those companies each time. Their former CEO Howard Schultz is left here he's left twice now in each time the company has struggled to find direction. And I and I really you know if if it happens once you say well maybe it was just a fluke or something. I look at that tonight I just wonder if it's one of those rare companies that needs that specific person there in order to make it successful as though he's sometimes there's a person who's that transformational. But also he's he's so willing to trying new things right right I mean everything from like the new products you see. That he sounds you know adding and things like music and stuff like that on you definitely see you know how his creativity plays into the stories when he comes back and. There's definitely there's definitely is creativity in. Biggest new idea. Open mindedness in terms of Starbucks but the one thing they they really gave up on soon through the white flag or white towel on. Was the wine. Do you remember that it only lasted for maybe like six months to a year they were trying wine at some of the stores and it barely lasted a year know just like I feel like that could have been a really nice Nietzsche there for Starbucks. You know you know right around you know 7 o'clock they're still technically open Beijing gulf coffee and dessert we have a glass of wine and wine tasting support that you are now. You know I wonder about on that is if maybe I I almost think that it could have been successful. But they just needed different brand deported under now you know it's its own name I don't know what you call like you know I've been called wine box but what whatever you wanna call or something that actually sound Smart but just. You know Starbucks is a place for people sit down you know they might spend the afternoon working on the novel or on a business plan yourself than a couple people coming deceive them. But it might just not be the right atmosphere. For hand wanna stop in for you know a couple of hours in the afternoons for glass one to catch up with someone. I almost wonder if they just needed a different brand deported under you know it's a small place it's not a bar it's you know still more of that cafe feel her but just a different brand. Yet the environment just isn't to me lend itself to kind of a wine bar and they go find our unity yeah of those kind of Blake. MITRE and sleep you know not really the cafes. Wonder about licensing because you know on the yup you know put up so it's tough area that's tough. And you have to go like town by town. Yeah yeah I am saying there should be like a line. Borer. You know the marshals Starbucks a supplement bush is something in downtown Boston resembling you know somewhere near Boston ya think I could see that happening. Weekly mortgage applications down one point 7% we now have interest rates above or rather mortgage rates above 5%. On thirty year fixed mortgages which just psychologically. Feels like a huge difference I mean don't get me wrong it is a big difference from where we were a year and a half ago three and a half percent. But it just when you see that five in front of you know that the decimal and we haven't seen that he's a lot it's just like I think about it for someone like me. And I'm someone who again by the time I got out of college rates were bottoming out okay. I look at an ice. I've never seen that that by the number of their consistently when I've been in the market for house it just it feels different. Yup -- fun not to mention the market in general is also facing weak demand for resize which has yes really affected the whole industry. That that's the indicator that was kind of bothering me a little bit is that more home buyers are looking at those riskier adjustable rate. Yes and Simien that says smacks of you know what we face in the 2008 financial crisis so. Hopefully people get too caught up in this because this can catch a pretty quickly to. What's so what's your search looking like these days. Decorate the inventories just first starter home richest. In price points still to hide houses. That needed a lot of work you were willing to do but the price point just isn't there for star home zoo probably is. Bad inventory at this point he punting until the spring. I think we are yeah I think we are unless something miraculous pop sub bottom. Like a set you will more than willing to do work we're now looking for move in ready place you know when it works acting accepting that fact but it's just the prices are too high. How quick how often do that you view monitor your credit score. It regularly now that the credit card companies have started including hit because a lot of credit card companies now line included as part of your far different that extremely useful you know let's. It was on that you'd you'd have to go to you know annual credit report dot at all. Put all your information and then verify what kind of car you had when you're seventeen you feel like by the time you don't what did you make a canyon about the someplace edges that got to get out of here. But it's so easy now but experts are saying they pay what you get above a certain level. You don't need to to really do that much more work what's that level Christine. About was it about 76 you can get through and it's it's great in that range pretty much to the weight and I guess lenders work and again I'm not a home under so I don't know any specifics. But I guess they kind of they they effectively here different bar were so it's not something where. If you have a 759 and someone else has a 758 Iraq and get you know a quarter point better than them. It's more hate you they have these tears from me a 760 and up 7672720. To 680 and so forth in those two years or more how you get. Ranked as far as the rates that you're going to pay so if someone has in general you know a score of 800. That might be nice you know from a personal perspective pay to get an update 825. But it doesn't sound like it's gonna say that you know may yet very marginal difference in terms of your and again in terms of your rates absolutely so it's it's just interest in the CN noted there has been more focused on credit scores as you mention it seems like they're all over the place now it's all the banks seem to offer them as part of their services which I think is great because it is have you played around with any of those calculators and things like that that they have. Yeah yeah I try to use a minority understand exactly what impacts everything you know eyes I'm looking at you know different mixes of you know. Loans and investments and all of that. But mainly it's just a good check on myself you know I just use it as a way to check myself in just marry you now hold steady are. You know needs improvement here that you. Exactly. Next story that we have here is somewhat horrifying by someone I mean completely horrifying about some of the unintended consequences of artificial intelligence so Amazon. I guess starting back in 2014 day it put together computer program using AI. That was trying to reduce the amount of time they needed to hires a would weed out all the rest maze they didn't want and keep the ones they did. This program somehow developed a bias against women. Right so going back to our earlier debate about technology vs English consider that a that the. Good point that okay good counterpoint. But yeah I mean basically because of the way. You know particularly for certain types of jobs on since the tech industry is dominated by more men historically than women. The AI you know algorithm against the they were using Sarah to train itself. And had a bias against women I ever saw and even a certain words they were saying. You words such as men have the tendency to use the words executed or captured and those kind of active words that you see more amend. Fever in the mail resume his over the female once despised seamer is in pretty much what. Happened here so historically men have had far more positions in the tech industry and so what would happen is. Pretty much that the program would say okay in these Reza maze that had. You know a ten year track record in the industry here the common factors that we found ensued it would go out and say. OK we didn't find that many with women so. It must be that women are people that we should be hiring when in fact it's no women didn't have opportunities that and so in fact it was he we need to look coat more closely at what's actually going on here. If figure out why our program is doing this so this does represent and I guess eat some crow one. This doesn't represent the danger of of relying too much on technology and not enough on human interaction. OK so I. Her out. I'll take the L on that one OK well deserved L my dad. And we'll just quietly moved at two under and that's here and I am public gotten.
