This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are down. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The title of the article this morning from the Wall Street Journal as US China tensions breakout in each game it that really seems to be the focus for investors this week. As you've had a pretty rough start the stock market so for an October Mike Armstrong John we took silver with you this morning. And ever got Lester is get to where to start with just an overall check in on the global markets and the economy I think the big news this morning was that the IMF came out. And they lowered their forecasts for global growth this year by. A a significant and it went from three point 9% down to three point 7%. As twenty basis point decrease and specifically do the trade concerns were definitely one of the main issues that. The I am outside here and you know what's up. A year Mike is you're seeing that this has an impact on everyone it's not just the United States it's not just China. The world is connected to and the US and China are the two big kingpins in this this global exchange recalled league global economy. The U the IMF had forecast for the United States this is an example. Two point 9% growth would drop are from this year so they're already looking for a drop off down to two point nine. They lowered that further down to 2.5. Dozen pretty big slowdown from work. Where we are right now and they brought the China estimated he believed China's numbers are from six point six down to six point two. Now we should point out the IMF does not have a great record of data of nailing these actual numbers however one thing they actually do have a good record of is getting the trajectory growers vacancy when the world economy's getting better vacancy when it's blowing and I think it's very clearly say. The what we're seeing right now in trade. Is going to slow the global economy. Yeah I mean that if it persists then it would definitely slowed the global economy. On the other hand you know we have seen a lot of the global trade issues resolved. Knew we had mostly European issues resolved we had after pretty much him tied up for awhile but it seems to be getting resolved. And I do wanna point that you knew nothing sells quite like bad news right now everybody loves to read about bad news all that. News outlets loved to publish bad news. India the stock market has seen a little bit of volatility in October yours through yesterday the S and p.'s down about 1% in October the NASDAQ is down nearly 4%. Let's keep this in mind the US stock market is up 10% this year you'll continued strong growth unemployment has reached an all time low. Not seen since what 1950s. Or 60s1969. So. The US economy is in pretty good shape. But they are you know there are signs of cracks in the foundation and it's important cover those two it's important point. Out to the when it comes to investing which is what we're here to talk about the there's two things that really matter. When you get past all the noise what matters is earnings and cash flow for the company's Levi. And what's equally important is the level of interest rates interest rates are gravity. For stock prices why. Because. We talked what Tina there is no alternative the reason why stocks melted up with the very social economy. Is because the option to owning the cash flows of businesses was getting half of a percent in your book right. What happens as if you get more and more on your guaranteed risk free investment exceeding. Well get the US treasury what you that we did benchmark you can leave the United States and CDs are tied to back them up you know as we get now on the three and a quarter area. Doesn't necessarily mean you don't wanna own. Google but it does mean that you now have an option and against those cash flow should have to raise the level of interest rates so. When listeners seen that the economy's doing better and better. That's great on the earnings side it really is fantastic. But again the other thing is we're going against this tide of rising rates. And that's something to keep up keep an eye on because we've gone from one point 38%. To 27 months ago. To 3.2. 227. Months that's ahead went in as long as the rates increases are gradual. Our economy can probably chug along real well when you start to get big increases then from a valuation perspective you've got some real challenges well. Let's take a practical example here's a some of that when I think of some of the most conservative. Alternatives to the bond market guarantee types of things I think about the utilities sector. Traditionally very conservative area of the stock market. Korea guaranteed profits regulated by the states. It's a national great paying a dividend yield right now of nearly 6% per year and dividends. That's pretty attractive but the ten year treasury is paying three and a quarter I wonder how big how high to CD rates need to get before investors say and I'm in Lima investing in these companies at them at the margin there's a little bit of the difference all the time but let your question is at what point. JU crack. We feel OK collectively let's get out of this stuff that was going to fixed and stuff. I think that number is in the 4% for a half percent airy new people might laugh at that you know what in 1999 the last time we have a robust rock and roll stock market that. Ended up becoming too expensive. The ten year treasury was six point 2% in okay it's and people were not buying the guarantee six point two real one on stocks that we've learned our lesson your. So the question now is in the real normal world what is that rate. Probably another hundred basis points higher would be real competition for stocks close a more practical examples right here so I have a thirty year mortgage rate locked in at three point 875%. Okay I'm very happy when I have extra money I have a choice I can invest that extra money. Reckon pay down my Morse those are two of my options I can also go blow it on Nate. Next new car but that's just not in me. But I three point 875 I would rather invest in the stock market. Over ten year time horizon I believe that the sound worked and beat out the cost of my mortgage. I fight a 5% mortgage have a much tougher conversation for much did more difficult. Math equation and you know what the the the exercising you're doing right now. Use an explanation of what's going on right now with the stock market because well what you're talking about doing with your with your mortgage. Is what investors every day think about that incremental extra dollar they have to invest. What do I get safe. What only differ risk and in 1999 payroll to take a risk at any cost and we learned the pain of doing that. Your right now facing the up the the the people very nervous because they're worried that it's one of those moments. I don't think we're there yet though I must get a really large quick increase. You're gonna still seat 20% earnings get growth yep overwhelm these issues were talking about. Yeah AA it's the story of a lot of different markets right you know people are worried about the real estate market. Well it's slowing down that doesn't mean it's heading for a crash it just means that prices are continuing to grow at 78%. Per year nationwide. You know when I look at the stock market yeah I see some cracks when I look at the US economy a season cracks in the foundation but. It doesn't mean that's you know suddenly stood near summit publicly traded companies are discussed are losing money hand over but it just means that. Well maybe instead earnings growth growing at 20% may be comes down to a ten or 15% and. In on top of that they're there's another issue of me it you're talking with the overall market which absolutely is true. With in the market what we've had in you can understand the complacency that happens. If Amazon works in 2015. And 2016 and 2070. Investor just kind of get used to throwing their money and all the companies that worked as an investment. Now he's a great businesses what we're seeing happening right now is a rather dramatic rotation. Out of that which we just got used to buying at any price turf and into a lot of the really good values that exist in the stock market. In places like financials in places like some of these industrials have been overlooked. We're seeing some of the out of favor stocks now doing really well and it's the real high flyers coming down to earth that's healthy correction. Yep we're not even there yet. And united in there in terms of correction. With an individual stocks are seeing some gold shirt and others come back that's a nice healthy thing when you get the expense of staff recommend down. Inexpensive stuff going up that get you to a more normal valuations so yes we have seen volatility yes the NASDAQ down almost 4%. So for an October but still up 12% year to date so you know a risk they keep all of this. In mind and did consider the backdrop of what we're dealing with today. Right now by the looks of it in terms of the odds it looks like there's a 41%. Probability that the Fed raises rates. Three or more times by the end of June of 22. And that's the big concern going forward I mean look will that stop the economy no no but it will take ultimate access and we can we talk about Tina there is no alternative that's a theme that. Yeah Barry and I have been talking about for years. There are actually is a little bit of altered and you can now get 3% in next year we have three increases. You know you have taken a look at that mortgage rate cumulative that you know money market accounts and you know. I'm not gonna be if such a rush to put that money to work my money market accounts and gotten. 3%. That's a competitive return right. So these end of it against you we should point out that that earnings are increasing at a 20% rate and that's very very healthy. I don't wanna be dead horse on China here but let let's talk about this meeting because at least from what I have seen a US relations with China while. Vary the difficult and is. Privately we talk about how bad they are but. I've never reliever called a public meeting between US and Chinese officials that was this fraught with contention. Yes secretary of state Mike Pompeo exchange rather testy words Chinese foreign minister. And I thought he was I thought he Pompeo was actually them the calmer one of the two yet when he was gone got a crazy yeah. I mean the they're not happy and we we understand that. In this is complicating other issues in terms of international relations namely the anticipated summit with North Korea yeah. So it's kind of a mess out there and politics is overriding minutes and be there watching our politics and we're watching their situation. The passing me that in the North Korea issued to me is the only regrettable part. Of our current policy towards a pretty much agree with. All of the maybe not the cause of able public said about the terrorist but they fact that we implemented these tariffs and are sticking to them right now and generally. A big supporter of because of China's actions around. You know stealing proprietary information young the only peace that day you know a side impact that is regrettable to me is. North Korea's so unpredictable and we might have been close to wrapping something up there but that that might really take a hit because of these relations yeah I mean I. At the same time you know we do have good communication. With the north Koreans and and really we can trust them. Completely completely you you can't buy peace is you can stop war but he can't really buy peace. The fact that matters that we have a and improving relations with them. And they can't be launching nuclear weapons was so that's that's the kind of good news but it's a complicated situation and my fear is that China is I've heard rumors that China may be looking to United States and you know trop is being so tough on us we're just gonna suck it up for the next year or so and hope to get someone better in 20/20. That's the case we have quite a stand off Butler breaking news Nikki Haley has resigned as UN ambassador out. According to a source on CNBC this is huge news be she is a rising star she is on the national scene. And surprise surprise resignation yet resigning as as UN ambassador while we're gonna cover that story out when we come back Ross can be talking about the data breach of the week coming at a Google so will be covering that story as well stay tuned right here on the financial exchange radio network. No. Hi everybody it's very Armstrong and Jake two Lian we're talking about a program called Z rent. Now this is specifically. Designed for those of you who are landlords in used to collector checks. With paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Will Z rent allows you'd collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy grant works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely vary so we we develops the rain to underneath the hole right because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You're missing envelope line in the post are you waiting he might not get all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month furthermore if your landlord on vacation your renting you know boxed up to what he does is it really digitize they'll. It makes the ranked electronic payments it allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting at the college student salute. It's predictable it comes at the same time every month. And it's all on me. So the landlords who have been using assisting huge time savings and ointment you are you still giving the first six months free for landlords the first six months or free and then in addition to that. If you bank at one of the participating banks he ran is always read. Security suffered through securities America income members finreg SIPC and advisory services arbiters securities America advisors think Gary Armstrong representative Armstrong advisory group in the securities America companies are unaffiliated stock tips. Start with the Barry Armstrong and shots are gonna fix the financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. Something. Well we're not protest spend too much time of the story because it is just breaking news if we don't have a whole lot of information but president trumps ambassadors the UN Nikki Haley has resigned. Achieve left the White House just this morning so we've we've all probably gets more details potentially within the next hour on. Reasoning behind this and any any news on it but Nikki Haley out as UN ambassadors have more news to come there. Talk a little bit more about the US economic situation the last time unemployment was this low was December of 1969. That point at 3.5 percent of. Very very low unemployment rate what fall. What followed was a recession and that's because you know economies. Boom and economies contract generally when you have unemployment is low. It comes. Late in a recovery which this has also done and where you know when nine years into recovery. So you get you know it's it. People get hired late that he should know just hire people hoping to get better yeah hire people. Well after things get better and right now we're at you know record the record low unemployment. Curious thing about this year we always hear of the Fed. Raises rates to try to tame inflation. And kind of take the edge off of excessive growth and kind of get you to a more sustainable situation. They're always trying to engineer which called the soft landing and it never happens they always try to raise rates they go too far in me that having a hard landing in a really bad recession. Would make me feel encouraged here is the last time in this situation. And the Fed gradually raised rates guess we got. We got a soft landing we ended up with him wildest recession in history nine months. Loan which is not very long recession. It really counts nine month recession of two months' back two quarters back to back qualified but we had a zero point 6% decline that perspective. That you would not even feel the difference between that and like what we had in 2000 well right. So. Yeah that's a case where the Fed gradually raised rates took the edge off inflation. And managed to soft landing which rarely happens. You know do we always look at periods in history that were somewhat similar you can argue this was certainly it followed a nine year period of expansion that was right off the backs of financing the Vietnam War so. You abuse we had some wars of the last nine years we're financing in addition to trying to get ourselves out of the biggest recession since the Great Depression so there are some similarities to him drag about here. Net and it's never the exact same scenario but this in terms of you know what we had back in 1969 and then nearly 1970s. He was a soft landing there it was as pretty as at close to as good as you can. Hope for for yet yet because eventually cycles do went in and if that ends with a zero point 6% decline for the recorder I'll take that every did. And always in defense of this you know long recovery that we says it never happened. The longest. We beat the record of a recovery. That didn't include a nineteen point 9% decline in 1991. It's funny we we we count that as our answer. As it. A crash and guys bear market yet we looked the other way at the nineteen point 4% decline we get within this year. You know the history of managed economies with a fed is you tend to get a little bit less growth but for a longer time. So this could still go on for one. Yeah it is nothing to prevent this from continues in yet technically this is the longest bull market in the long history of economic expansion in history. But the 87 today 2000 what is. Three much. Pretty much the same type of thing that we're having right here are Jack and it. Went on you know whats that for years and years and they don't count 87 to 2008 because of that nineteen point 9%. Which they rattled enough to. But I'm with you like popular like that was a thirteen year. Recruiter of economic expansion stock bull stock market so if we can do that don't you know don't read too much into the numbers as to win we're going to have a stock market crash nobody knows it's some if anybody knew they wouldn't be telling you. Someone said this is the bottom of the eighth inning. But here's the thing it can be it can go a torn innings before giving him like that a Pawtucket Red Sox in the went 23 points and you know we could have left. So I measure before the break we've got our weekly data breach and point this time McCain. So Google if anyone were calls trite term. Launch area FaceBook challenger back in 2011 news called Google losses most is social media site they poured. Hundreds of millions of dollars into this into this offerings that nobody ever use I think I accidently signed up for an account one time I'd ever said operative with ties and efforts heroes like what that'll do next the emphasis. Learn it like a blank page what do and where people. The problem that I think when that happened here if I go to an empty bar and he and I'm only one and here. Turn on the game not what's it like that's what it felt like going to go. So if you Google effectively. All the FaceBook and they actually released a whole bunch of users' information. Now we don't have some security numbers and hear anything but name and address. Employment information a lot of stuff they should have been releasing. I think that causes this quite frankly is had a feeling products are probably wasn't attracting Google's top exactly the world and they don't wanna lose what little they have so I mean effectively had this this basically at the armored old project it probably didn't have Google's top talent working on it and it was just kind of ignored. But the bigger issue. They had the data leak that's a problem and they're gonna have to address the far bigger issue. Is that it was brought to the CEO. Of he net measure the risks and said you know what I know we delete half a million people's information. But we're not disclose data were conscious decision and that is going to bite him because that would ruin our reputation well guess what people have a right to know yeah. We're gonna take quick break we're gonna cover more than to a story and we also have Wall Street watch coming right up here on the financial exchange rate and. Like just on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter. Show breaking business news is always first right here on the financial exchange radio network. Are you having problems the blocked sink or drain. Yes so I PBG industries they were enough noise they're big supplier of paints coating specialty materials in the settlers coatings company in the world. Headquartered in Pittsburgh and they released a report this morning that tad they're lowering their guidance significantly based on inflationary pressures. And then presumably a lot of this time from weaker demand in China as well which they cited right now the stock is down about 7%. Of on this news down to a 101 dollars and they've been bouncing around a fair bit this year. Kind of all over the board from as high as about 120 in and all the way down to where we are and even lower stokes. Pretty volatile year for them in addition Papa John's in the news a lot this morning so Papa John's is up to nearly seven and a half percent this morning on this story that we're covering about Tryon who has a big stake in Wendy's considering. A takeover of puppet on it's. Yet this was a little complicated there were rumors that Wendy's was very interested in buying puppet John yeah. Now here's a guy who's that a takeover expert Nelson Peltz whose fund try and fund management. Is actually looking at doing a takeover bid for Papa John's International. According to people familiar with the situation now. Again there's a connection with Wendy's because they're also a large investor in Wendy's and the other thing that makes it's kind of interesting as John mentioned. She matter an option shattered mr. shatter. Who you'll boasting he is Papa John and he is he's name is John he invented the company created it he owns 30% of the company but he got in trouble. And it goes off on media call he made a third person reference to a a bad duration solar a racial Slorc happier and I don't know if there's a media conference or an internal conference call and policies ousted because in that was the reason I I heard that. The culture Papa Johns was was all support the pilot. Because I got to believe there's more than him just saying I don't figures Abraham Lincoln referred to sell when so. As being something that would make you lose your your business literally so what's happening right now as viciously who. Partners up with John who has 30% of the stock. And what happens so that's that's Torre stand right now trying and is considered considering a takeover of Papa John's and there's other companies also that could be in the building. Yet. They'll Wendy's they own dominos at one point yeah and Arby's too I believe. This complex and sensitive. But they haven't dealt with. I haven't seen try and dealing with a company in being. Public turmoil before they haven't they haven't addressed that issue a BA Papa John's type of scenario they haven't. Yet they haven't dealt with a company a lot of this company CBS type a scenario where you're dealing with the CEO has always been in the spotlight. And it's very polarized they dealt with you know issues within companies about sales and profits and things like that but not a league. I wanna start a fight at the story because this he has actions you know it. And this is the key point the key point is it's pizza and you can get decent pizza and a lot of different places. What differentiates you in that business is image and image alone in that image is tarnished. Your stock with a piece of pizza that that anybody can get where ever they want what however they want and and the problem the question that the 64000 dollar question is. How damaged is that brand the other jobs. They had a pretty good dad that's I think during the Sue Bird here in this football game on Sunday may be with all the franchise owners one ages clips tensing clips of a much different franchisee of Papa John's right basis saying. You know. That's not us it can still contour stories. Pays a diverse group of people trying to really put that behind them because. That's what's hurting yeah that's hurting the stock Papa John's it's really hurt franchise. And here's the thing at the end of the day we talk what you Paul Lee which is which is controversial. But chipotle slumping kinda proprietary and they're gonna have a lot of challenges no question about it you know they can overcome it by saying we actually have different food we actually have eight different presentation. We actually have something you can't get O one of the places. Every town has like five speech and so it's gonna be a real challenge them but if they come through this. And they have the backing of a company that is really good at the food business. In their part that chain. You know it could work out I mean Popeye Jones was the main reason I put on 1520. So in a big supporter. But they weren't around because I wasn't even bigger supporter you've heard about twice now. But you've been equally twenty pounds bigger with pizza cut or on photos or dominant factor but Papa John's the only one is on the college says that it's wrong. Yes for me dominoes just delivered you know 2:30 AM college and a today many weekends via enough to be proud that that Jeanne is I would order pizza I'm going to regret this poll question today and now all about it's have an hour and twenty minutes ago we do a poll question up on financial exchange showed dot com Tucker went 20 yeah are poll question today is what is your favorite national. We all know they're gonna take over the world eventually there eliminate all the jobs that we once held but there are few robot companies right here in Massachusetts that seemed to be making some big moves and shake things Lou this was from the upstart 100 the list of hundred. Biggest automation companies and knew what had the highest hopes over the next few years Lou what did we see here comic called six river systems. In will pay him. Right here in law autonomous warehouse. Robots that work alongside humans. And do basic work that well. Lot of people might not want and so they're they're doing that chemical at the summit called out the blocks. Are among startups illuminating what's called dull dirty dangerous jobs allotment in the janitorial type jobs as this one avid bots designs when self driving force driver that seems to cool like thirty. Yeah easy job that you can automate via your room while seems I I used to do that when I was Syria Carville and step to clean the floor with like I was riding at like. The floor offer yeah exactly so. How is that job I was on I had I had fish tail down and everything allies. And I I was pretty damn government. So I mean. This is mean however you want to look at this is you know could be an enormous cost savings to companies it could be a profit driver for the designers these robots but one thing that seems to me to be certain is. Once you have robots take these jobs because you know we are at this point right now where wages are going up. The costs higher for you know a person to off the floors in your where house is not. There wage for that person is up and it's hard to find that person. And so if you replace that person with a robot. My guess is you know can go back. Right there's there's no doubt that the British the other side of it as though that like win win Tucker reference what he did. That wasn't his exclusive job so he might still have a job doing things that maybe aren't all that great but is like one fewer. Dull boring thing to do chair so it's gonna I think what's gonna happen to amateur. You know I like a case like ours ours I would ruin it would have ruined your urgent this day totally you Tucker missed are telling literally forty fours anymore. You know soccer. And he is a floor cleaning fetish to and and I know he would have been denied them throw. But but I either what the point is I think people will still have other janitorial responsibilities to do now yeah in in my free them up to do things that the required. Or joint delegation you know Sammy the argument that was made here and there are pieces of technology had been ruled out in the past that have actually you know. Improved conditions and expanded jobs for for physical human workers the big example that was given was the AT. So back in 1985. The US had 60000 ATMs in 485000. Dollars and logically you'd think OK well ATMs got rolled out across the country and all the bank teller jobs just went away when that's actually happen in 2002. We had 352000. ATMs. And bank tellers were up to 527000. Yet seized on expansion of bowls. The question is will that next technological innovation do the same thing or will it reduce the number of actual and in that case of Lyle was the bank teller to get more involved in working with the client on things like mortgages and home equity loans. All the ways in which they could become involved at that bank so profitable pieces of yet you know stuff which allowed those banks to further expand and they do and exactly so the TA TMs did not kill. The branch they didn't candidates make one quick thing report break. I was a Stop & Shop. Recently and there was a robot roaming the files. It was a robot scanning products on the shelves. You know it was a sign says hey Emeril on understood Duma jogger don't mind me. Now is like what is going on we're born to die and I. There's hotel maybe in phase two it does on the real answers so you aren't you order option robot during leadership. While the results come in for us was a Stop & Shop so it's it's here. Cushing and old guy for the month October called Medicaid income trusts. Todd I have to confess the average person is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong. The need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. A Medicaid income trust or an asset protection trust you know their I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical. And and people aren't gonna know one player and others so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing a state plane via taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court they can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up. And I do little time. But also make sure on their card when you get their card to use the letters LL them after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you do unfortunately that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you want to have a flat feet. Regular note it's gonna cause you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. Yeah that could certainly throw or Chad you know I think about how many times are trochmann individual stocks and we say exactly that. The impact the tariffs could be substantial or not it depends how this plays out there's two things that I worry about what about any stock it's what is in this undated two I don't think games against the NG space. But it what is you know one of the China traders do it and that's that one could impact this. Interest in sector to be operating in I always ask myself what can we do domestically come home how good is this business right here at home. If they're doing really well at home. It is unfortunately that time of year which is hurricane season. Hurricane Michael currently strengthen to hurricane force in bearing down on Florida and then expected to go back over the Carolinas which error to my knowledge still recovering yup last one. Mike Armstrong Tucker Silva Jon when he with you this morning. And this is not looking good job. It's expected to maybe strengthen only to a category three bad and the touches down in the states. Yang governor Rick Scott at a news conference yesterday Citic could be the most destructive storm to hit the Florida Panhandle in several decades. As you said it could be category threes can be at least category to either way doesn't really matter that much. Lot of destruction walled water will come miles on shore and could easily rise over the roofs of houses. Got a state of emergency. Ian 35 counties in Florida. And a president they got the request of president from to declare a pre landfall emergency for the state. It activated 12150 National Guard forces. It's going to be a really bad storm. I guess if there's one small good bit of news. It's a fairly fast moving storms of the things that's not sit on the Carolinas this last did the Dow industry faster yet and and there's going to be a lot of rain but it's gonna move pretty quick you not have the kind of flooding you have a though. In the last two big storms including Florence. Because it's not just sit over there but the big concern in terms of water misty flash flooding you don't wanna be out driving around at all because it's awful just come up. Very large very quickly so that's where we stand a category three or category to either way it's can be birds. Likely West Coast of Florida getting the worst of it and then continuing on to Georgia and Carolinas after that but. Right now the pin on the down folks panhandle was definitely it's it looks like a fairly direct hit the the lieutenant. So. We are covering this story before. The break about Google and wanna go back that story who and so Google had a social media platform called Google+. It was basically flop and they rolled out in 2011 the trying to do something to compete with FaceBook failed to the all but shut it down stop promoting it day I don't did you even set up an account as of right now I don't I don't even know but. Night as of Britain this moment nick knows just shut down it's completely shut down so. It was a failure. Made the big issue that they had last year it sounds like they just kind of abandoned and didn't pay a heck of a lot of attention to it and likely because of that they have had a big deal leak issue where half a million users. Information was. Improperly shared with. Third party app creators and things like that similar to the FaceBook story. And what's most disturbing as we said earlier is that. They did not report this because they felt that it would Debian negative publicity for their company which is a really bad reason to not be upfront with. The public and with the media and with with the government so Google is a lot of trouble I mean they're doing a lot of things that are raising the eyebrows of a lot of people. And you know they they do a lot of things you know in their laboratory and they invest David invest a ton of money in a whole lot of things that don't work. To try to get the things that's going to be the next big thing yeah I mean there and driver Lewis cars for example which is nothing to do with you know web searches but it's something that they're. There are investing in the future. This raises the question though but social media I mean we talked about. The scale with some what of FaceBook ads would be very difficult to replicate. And I would argue that and I'm not a big fan all FaceBook because I think it's up it's a lousy platform. But they end up having a monopoly when it comes to large social media platforms to all the money they're having to invest two right now make it safe. And today a fake news in the deal with the mall multiple accounts. It's a big investment in the question is how many other companies are to be able make that kind of investment and Heidi yes I think we're like OK if I sign up for Google+. It's really no good unless you also do. Right in my other best friends do. I I tend to think that there will always be some replacement to the big question is distaste for just mail it means to grant started attracting a lot of users away from FaceBook right who's bottoms snapped chat has had a similar impact as well so. It's a fast moving industry I don't worry about FaceBook chief monopoly in that area. Legal situation is the documents that have been discovered I miss it we're just getting information on this story so it's it's not a whole lot clear as to why this did come out eventually. My guess is some leaked it. The documents this quote from the Wall Street Journal the document shows who officials felt that disclosure could have serious ramifications. Reviewing its it would likely result in us coming into the spotlight alongside or even instead of FaceBook despite having stayed under the radar throughout the came region political scandal. This is so much worse yet this is so much worse than having been alongside basement during an issue and think about what they're saying his FaceBook has got a lot of bad publicity. Let's not get in the way at a bad publicity now let's just make sure all the best justices agreed this rate under the rug is all Cambridge analytic and all the issues FaceBook has. Let's keep our problems. Quiet. On top of the fact that the major technology companies were invited to Washington to discuss issues. And you know I am I defend the government they kept that seat empty. Google nobody showed up. And they won't face the music and have a lot of issues to deal with in terms of privacy. And the way in which they regulate themselves. It's basically self regulation is a whole different world. It's not geared Chief Executive Officer as senior PHI's most definitely going to be testifying congress now we often nauert no doubt about it yet subpoenaed time examined there they're lucky Europeans GDP that gen general data protection regulation just went into effect in name where's this incident took place in March. That new law requires companies to notify regulators breaches and send you two hours so if this law had been to place and who will be facing massive fine for an the European regulators as. They're timing gray area and to what's actually going to happen if there will be any fines are probably there to answer I will give European regulators lot of credit is they've been that good rule it's of great rule and it way out front of the rest of the world becomes issues concerning Google and and we were disappointing it is disappointed the United States. Is on the it is the lack of regulation is really troublesome because there's millions and millions of people were using these products. They're following us everywhere we go through listening to our conversations. They know more about us than we think. And we don't ourselves on the other hand and and they and they operate independently and it's like don't bother us we're not accountable. And I know the argument the other hand as well if you don't like it don't FaceBook. Fair but there are some services to really difficult there's some online service that's three difficult and optics produced it's tough to not have any. Yeah although there are option yet other options though there are options that are more secure than Google agreed by day you still need to have data protection laws in place to protect us from. It's very difficult op had no online. Personality to to have no online presence whatsoever it's very very difficult and it's hard not to be on FaceBook did. Especially if your business. I mean if your business if you. If you're trying to keep up with namely you know the main reason that I use it all of my. And my family he in my ways and ways on this for wants pictures my kids it's a heck of bodies here. We've got great pictures of your cute Sam and I if I can tell you that it's one of the highlights of FaceBook at least among the European general data protection regulation by the way threatens penalties of up to 2% of your world but the company's worldwide revenue if they fail to hear these rules. Pretty stiff regulation in force in place where these rules. So we will see what happens to based on the results they're beginning to be held accountable that is good news and the good news that your Google investor on the other hand is. Fortunate this isn't all the Google does all of absolutely. FaceBook that's all that fazed but does heiress social media platforms and screw up. Google is much more than a social media platform they script social media is an absolutely and understand when it comes to search advertising. Google has a a gold mine they do you just hope it's not indicative of a culture and do ruled that the are just now getting. Look underneath. Laura Adams from drivers Ed dot com joins us now and she's if she's revealing a survey that there that they did added that. I'm not surprised in the least by but I bench incredibly disappointed by Laura thanks for coming on. Why you stir up with just running through a few of the key metrics that you found in your service. That driver that dot com survey it wanted to take a look at what's going on behind the wheel right out you know why the hate gears a habit the decisions but drivers are making. And as you mention that it. It's not that surprising but certainly is disappointing. We found that a lot of people are giving them pretty risky. Keep behavior us 73%. Of the survey respondents said they are. Reading tack. Behind that we all 54% said they're taping tax. The kind of deal. Could certainly you know not I'm not a good habit we also asked about other things like. Watching video doing right you know doing social media. 8% that they are watching YouTube video is behind the wheel I thought that was pretty shocking. That's a better. I mean that to me sounds more dangerous than drinking and driving if you're watching a YouTube video wall driving. How can you possibly pay attention to what you're doing. Absolutely foreperson that even that there watching Netflix programming note that it really indicate to me that there is. Serious problem me even a kind of good to. Action and you know we're watching. Video it and using that sound bite her in the car. You know I was I I saw an article a few months ago that maybe a little bit proud of my generation that we had a pretty significant reduction in. Intoxicated driving number of arrests around drunk driving. But it looks like we've just replace the alcohol with a cellphone. That is absolutely true we do you see that you know alcohol is is reducing. But the message that I think people are getting it we did still bind a small percentage but that they feel like they are located drive after drinking. But what's interesting is that I understand of the drivers that dot com respondents said. That they have driven actors smoking or adjusting marijuana. Within the past twelve months. So that maybe your problem you know that we see becoming more widespread especially after Boerse states are legalized yet. You know what's even more troubling is I read this John Moody by the way I I read that. Like a third of the people who smoked marijuana in Colorado where it's legal safe they are better drivers after smoking pot. And I I certainly gotten a best cure not let. You know it does make people feel like they are. You know in control of the situation where maybe they're not only control. All of them pretty important haters that we wanted to highlight and make sure. You're good driver be aware that many people out there on the Broder do many risky behaviors and need to be any more tests and that driver. To keep up states. Are you guys see it every day on blizzards every drive up and down route 128 here in Boston but I know it's everywhere a you see people just staring down their phones changing lanes without noticing it and it's it's. It's petrified. I don't know if you can answer this but. Nationwide they're very strict penalties about being intoxicated with while driving how significant are the penalties for distracted driving these days. Yes they really do vary from state to date on some states like California. Have eliminated it at you know at all even Kutcher silence. But other states like I'm here and accept. Certain areas are okay with and and other areas are saying he had talking on the ballot you could be. Touching Hispanic using as a nap or kind of guidance. Which can be talking not. There there are a lot of inconsistencies. Turned state to state even county county with and it states. Do you think that until we get to the point where we can standardize this that and really get a solid. And epic about education and it it is a little confusing for consumers and they don't really know what a laugh out. That regardless of whether it's a lot or not live I think the key is to understand that if you are talking. Like you're driving or using your you're distracted you're even if it is illegal you're distracted and you are likely going to you know eventually. Get this kind of accident related to that fact that you're just not focused a 100% on the road. So it. You seem to be concluding maybe I'm maybe I'm drawing some conclusions but are you more in favor of the carrots you know training and focusing on this. As pars driver's education or. More in favor of the stick witches increased penalties for distracted driving. Yeah you know I do you think it's gonna take vote against saying that awareness is that the first step and that's one of the reasons that drivers that dot com. During this study just to raise awareness of the problem. And get education you know he would need to be in safe driving habits and get really good education at. That they begin to drive that they have those habits that will last rep they're tired of life. And it here you know the driver who is older and you're tempted by LP. The new technology that maybe wasn't there when you're younger and driving. On you need to realize that the that the problem for adults as well as young drivers did it really doesn't matter how old you are could be. Very distracted by technology. I don't think it just because you're talking on a speakerphone are currently commands a lot of found that you're doing the right thing. That's ever been holding concerning your hand but it it still leisure cognitively distracted. From the resident and that's not say. Undoubtedly in fact I read that the improve that you get is little if none. By doing it as you said you know on a speakerphone that your mind is then on that conversation. And a year actually a pretty close to the same risk is if you're they're trying to type something it. Absolutely study after study has shattered bat. Having a speaker phone and it really does not help because your brain is just trying to bolt the tactic trying to think about that conversation which are also thinking about. The road and what happened that you just yet do not think about it and that one Smart though is even a short distraction can be incredibly dangerous. Well clearly a significant issue twice 163450. Driving distracted fatalities. Laura thank you coming on the show index Wednesday to us repression. And they added this is one that's really really is for somebody that spends a lot of time on the highways. I see it every single day and it is. You if you do it long enough you're gonna kill somebody. Well yeah I mean is more more crashes to which is obviously causing more and more traffic and you just seat on the highway right simple. You know you know fender Bender type of accidents on the highways is a bowl was alleged to an offender better on the highway and she'll wonder. And you know what happens a case like that Tucker we've seen it. You're in traffic that traffic moves during you know in a traffic jam. Yet some running room. And you think you have more running room and you have. And you look down and all of a sudden you're right on the back of the card for an illness it's stopped and you think you have the time to check you don't have the time jackets. Time passes what quicker than you think nothing aside just from phones in terms of distracted driving I think the problem is touch screens on these car gets the touch screens can does that I used to have one yet actually do them install. You know sometimes you have to radio button and it just doesn't change when you want it to him. You know he is eager taking your attention off the road essentially in your navigating through all these you know options of bells and whistles on these cars now. You know I think touch screens are problem reloaded yet I do you. And force that not a big fan of new federal regulation but it. We've got federal regulation against driving under the influence of alcohol. At. I think you need to have some sort of consistent minimal law around distracted driving but that is group. You know a tough thing I don't remember remember this though you do not have a right to drive. You've right to do a lot of things you don't you don't have a right to drive it is a privilege granted by the state. So weakened set what ever perimeters we want to regulate that and we should. Because we're talking about. My life and your life not just the person driving around. Distracted driving that person should not be on the road. And has no right to be on the road attacker had no idea. To Oakland or boldness we we give out probably do get back tickets these days out and talks and say clearly you can at least prove that it happens but it's going to be much more difficult prove if its a misdemeanor events and spent time in prison for it. It's okay. It's it's a very serious issue that week. Continue to deal with right now. Mutual funds or exchange traded funds that we're using to accumulate wealth. During our working years high earning years. That whole equation changes once we retire and we hit age 6570. And we say cheap son of a gun I need to take some income from powerful. Yeah it it really does change and specifically war go to more of an income generation mindset and it's difficult today because if you look at a lot of the ways that people historically did that CDs yielding 5%. Bonds yielding five or 6% her you don't have those tools available anymore seat need to make sure that you're still adapting your portfolio to the new demands of retirement. But you need to make sure that using the right instruments and so that can be a combination of dividend paying stocks it can be equities that you simply think gonna grow and Paul little principal off there. As well last in the right mix of bonds they can generate some income as well what about municipal bonds is that something people use. It is of particular fewer in a high income bracket it's something that a lot of people use that we tend to target simply because the tax efficiencies you gain there can be significant if you like it. So at 18 pretty obscure question of what is to John Glenn and obtain his driver's license the seventh correct answer is gonna walk away with. A fifty dollar gift certificate to seasons 52. And we know he wasn't texting while driving because it meant texting wasn't I wasn't available from. We've mentioned before the break John that there's a new tax credits being rolled out this year. Lotta Lotta things change with the tax codes you were in a talk about this briefly but it's really important that if you. If you're not a 100% certain what's changing with Texas sit down with a tax premiere if you do you're. Taxes every year ND you know this is gonna be something euphoria. And I might recommend released talk attacks expert at least understand the new changes that are going into place here. Great advice because there are changes some some major changes. A real beneficiary here is families with kids because the the tax cuts in jobs act of what's the name for the tax cut. Doubles the maximum child credit from a thousand to 2000 dollars per qualifying child. But what you referenced is. Kids were older than seventeen who don't qualify as kids. Who are going to school up to age 23 and again we read you wanna consult your tax advisor on this but. You may be eligible for a tax credit a new tax credit of up to 500 dollars for those depends again we're talking about. Children in the household to have more children are actually adults. Up to age 23 who are students. Right so and you can take up to 500 dollars us a specific rules yet to cover basically half of their costs of living. So very specific rules around it and today it's confusing too because of them at the same time that this child tax credit is going up. You also have the elimination. Of the it was at the individual. Not the individual mandate the the individual deduction you can take for each individual living in the house. So right. And there's depending on ages verbal errors that extra depending on the size of your family what state you live and whether or not have a mortgage and how much other income you have you may be puzzling that it impacted by these changes you may be negatively impacted by the exchanges so. It's not simple it's confusing and it's. It's new but it hit somebody and at the bottom line is if you have someone 23 or under yeah who is somewhat dependent on your income. You might wanna pay attention does because you might have a a deduction here that you didn't think you had coming right. I know that many of you listened to our show or retired or nearing retirement age and if you don't have a sound financial plan to allow you to enjoy your retirement. Unaffiliated. Soon John completely separate that we had a story about two giant ships colliding at sea and whenever I read a story like this I just never quite understand how the certain things happened so there is a large. Massive. Freaked and freight shipping and a container container ship. It is nearly 300 meters long a fifth of a mile long. Anchored at C. Being a crashed into bias there. I distracted driving is one thing but I think if I checked my email and you know I saw this you know ship the size of a downtown. Somewhere like him except in the middle mile long folks. It's issue I hit dozens of sneak up poignant way these things are like fly along like 500 miles per hour of their pay big vessels now to be fair neither of us had any experience driving massive ships at the ocean or at least I'd know that much about your background job I don't know I have never done that. Amnesty. And it was anchored at an open and the weather wasn't that that was a night. Even now that would matter causes that do their thing I don't like rest on his radar all lit up things you can you drive I want these games I've ever taken off fund you know a coastal airport. Yeah and seen all the tankers all but see at night now at lit up like a Christmas tree right here. Yeah we don't know the cause of this and it's and it's not immediately known said Leah how much fuel. The two vessels that their tanks that were talking about the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. A three mile long spill with heavy fuel. With French and at John postal authorities trying to contain it so yeah I don't mean to laugh it's it's not a guy that's an environmental mess and it's also an economic loss to but. Very very sad when you when you see is damaged or environment it's hard to understand. How how this happened I mean to the cars and 128. Thing. 294 metre long ship is a different. Same day we had a completely different part of the world day in Canada yeah refinery operated by Irving oil had a pretty days. Illusion yesterday you have Irving oil which owns and operates the 320000. Barrel A day refinery. Reported what they're calling a major incident yesterday. Witnesses reported dead shaking explosion followed by a large fire. Big mess there in Canada and hopefully not too much more damage and or or loss of life yeah hey tonight I get it would have we have a big storm bearing down on that area in the four Florida Panhandle you always worry about all the offshore rigs that are. Operating over there right now is well in a BP RD evacuated all of their employees on this race Jenny if there's if there's a consolation here or good news is that with a lot of these turkeys there's. Plenty of advance notice so you know we know approximately within about ten miles per hour just how strong storms going to be. We can tell based radar within 5200 miles exactly where it's going to end up being. So you know it'd be the oil companies so we'll take precaution and if they think it's a threat they will pull people out there may appoint them to do so. In New York City if you're drawn a blank here I think Poland to down the exact it's a tourist attraction exactly. And you know they are smartly in my opinion. Opening up again. So arm ends at 30 Rock in Iraq by NBC pretty good timing with Toys 'R' Us disclose every single case absolutely an annualized and it's it's a tourist destination you get people on there. You know get a lot of talk. Again it's definitely a luxury other and its luxury toy brand it when they were opened back man yeah you'd have my personal shoppers and yet there you concierge type services so I mean it's it's over the top it's it's what it's supposed to be and are often a pop up shops in Spain Australia and London. For the holiday season people go in there and get them by. They're nice expensive ideas you know it's going to be the other inch thinkers among all the other companies that are trying to pick up the Tories arrests. You know absence. Party city they do you know those Halloween pop shops that that you're a year there'll certainly do -- city pop shops. Take that same space that they rent for Halloween and opened up diesel toy pop up shops. Trying gobble ups in this Toys 'R' Us apps that this year and get a lot of people like to go these stores and see the stuff in person in the find out how goofy you open those outfit to whatever you know in whole foods don't want. Amazon's giving up. Torre brochures to hold shoppers. Today here's a parishioner at all that crap that we sell on him conduct on the I've fear kid that's you know trying to grab everything in the store Smart moves that drew a Smart parents and it's a Smart move getting these pop up stores people will definitely go there and spend money I think so. Three housing trends to watch this fall talked about the real estate market extensively and some weaknesses that were seeing what what are we what are we should be looking at this fall we know the bottom line is despite this huge recovery and you know and almost all of the recovery the key issue was housing. This is a recovery has been fantastic and causing simply hasn't come along housing starts. Have have not done well housing stocks are doing very poorly right now. And somebody keep an eye on the see that things get even worse. Is key rates stay under 5% to take off my percent it's gonna walk a lot of people love the market via right will prices ease up on the gas well this is on the key plan to. We have seen says three months in a road network overseeing the Euro for your home prices that median home prices nationwide. Increasing less than 5% and that hasn't happened since fourteen so. Clear they were seeing some deceleration. And not seeing a reduction in home prices were seeing some. Deceleration. In the trees are seeing you know buyers and sellers coming together and getting an equilibrium price that seems reasonable I don't hear the stories about fifteen bids over asking price anymore exactly and I saw a number that I think is reflective of what's going on here at the ratio at banks. All of loans to deposits. Is the lowest in forty years which means banks are sitting on a lot of capital. And they're not lending it out and in part it's because a lot of people applying don't. Applied because these price too high incomes don't justified. On top has been a lot of regulations that precluding a lot of women. This could be interesting issues we go forward to get banks to open up and start writing business because it was just the opposite extreme. Eleven years ago. Young buyers still really aren't in the market in force. 2535. Year olds are 36 point 5% homeownership rate. That's still well below where janitors were at the same point in time number of different factors can point you would there be student loans are not getting married it's bill. Animal tales are not buying homes at the same rates at their parents and grandparents were nowhere near bought the trend here is encouraging because one Eagles are now starting to increase their share. And I look forward I think a lot of this purchase has been delayed not put off. And I think you see a lot of people doing in the thirties. With previous generations in their twenties it's going to be huge boom I think for house going forward I keep your own. Pointing to hate you know great as you don't need to put 20% down ever yeah everyone's as though you knew you need to be buying a home with 20% down and that's clearly not the truth be not true visa while these programs that we have really don't. Love these programs that exist that. I mean I know that their important get first time home buyers and mouse but. Are we going back to some of the issues we sell back in the early two thousands you up and down the issue of scholarships for students going to college the more money handout. The more prices actually go up yeah. Don't easy you make credit terms of load down payments. The more likely you are to get people to buy more house than maybe this year and got VA loans guaranteed by the department that if veteran affairs there required no down payment right I mean agree with that one USDA loans allow people to buy girl homes without much of a down payment so.
