This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and show Oksana. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Morning Columbus Day Monday October 8 markets are open however so we'll us we are too. Welcome the financial exchange Mike Armstrong Peter how Tim Donovan would view this morning. And it's part of the holiday lot of new trust him we got Mike Pompeo who's dating who is in China another big retailer is biting the dust declared bankruptcy over the weekend. Whole slew of Amazon news that would get to but I wanna start off for China because that's what that's what really moved markets overnight US markets opened up actually a bit flat this morning. Guys slightly down pretty much flat in spite of the fact that Chinese stock market was down nearly 4%. Last night over the night so let's talk about do well let's talk about that the visits China for so Pompeo. Got there had a bit of an exchange with his counterpart. Not off to a great start at its. Secretary of state gets not a great era for US China relations but. You know the this as you see some interesting signs coming out of China mystery of the New York Times about. The big People's Bank of China sort of effectively popping 175 billion dollars in the economy in my favorite line in this New York Times. Story the backdrop for the news sectors to its meaning today. The government separate September 28 ordered reporters. Journalists in China. Not to use the phrases. Slowing economy local government debt and risks for signs of declining consumer confidence. You're not allowed to talk out loud about those things in China if you're a journalist he's got to remember that that's what you're dealing with when you're investing in China. A big bullet I rushed you know president she says what goes over there so yeah effectively the People's Bank of China which is the government bank is pumping 175 billion dollars in the economy. The way they're doing that is to reserve requirements so you know explain this a little bit here. Not get too technical but when you don't put your your paycheck in the bank. The government says okay the US government says you must the bank must keep a certain percentage of that in cash and and the rest they can loan. That's how banks do business so you're in the United States that reserve requirement is I believe 10%. In China it's a little bit higher. Abbott they just lowered it by a full percentage point which is a really big big move for the bank which was at fifteen and a half percent going for it's going to be a 14%. Reserve requirement. That pumps a whole boatload of cash into the economy. Pretty immediately that banks are gonna blown out that money pretty quickly because you don't wanna sit on more cash than you need to. Which will likely be good for the short term but man is that dangerous long term fiscal. And a billing as they sometimes college and you don't think. Senator government there people who must know a lot of things about what's going on with the Chinese economy and our whispering into the president's here. This actually is a good time to pick a tree battle. With China because. You know something's coming around the corner of the makes it. A higher likelihood that China want to. Yeah I mean let's let's talk about the facts mean the Chinese Government the Chinese economy has been on a chair for. Waited two or three decades at this point in GDP growth of meter 9%. And that had been forecasted to slow down even without trade terrorists you know more of a reasonable rate for developing economies of you know let's call it worked 6% growth going forward. But then you. You know topple these tariffs on top of it and it's really setting the Chinese economy for Spain in the stock market in China is down about 15%. And that was before. It toppled another for overnight. CIA the US government does go into these negotiations with a pretty you know pretty good hand. We do need to prepared for probably some rising costs though I think we've we've talked about on this show a number of times personally I think it's worth it. You know personally I think that. Cost of you know us. Punishing China for stealing proprietary. You know trade secrets and information from the United States is worth putting these tariffs on it and seen. Higher car prices higher prices for you prior Christmas holiday shopping season you know if you're going and buying toys. Animals that joke and I've I've made in China so that you know that's all gonna impact things but. I think it's worth the cost here today to really stick to channel. It's all fun and games until they've send warships to Taiwan yeah I mean we're just talking about. Economic policy but obviously it is a whole other side to this witches you know if there's any government that spent more on defense of the last decade it's also China so. Definitely some concerns there that's not what we want either and theory going on from China. An ancient story from CNBC's morning global deal making appetite has fallen to a four year low I needed exit China trade fears etc. Only 46%. Of global executives of the next twelve months are planning to. By you or merge with another company which is pretty low in terms of historically what we've seen. Yet to come down by ten percentage points from the year earlier so that's you know definitely dramatic. Shift of course you know he had seen. You know a lot of big deals going through the sky deal Comcast. Command to pick them up bear and Monsanto. You know at some point you sort of wonder just how many deals are there left out there to do them and expose every single day there's some deal to do but. You know we've come through a period of really aggressive emanate and you know if we knew the answer to this week. Make a billion dollars in Kabul things in the Communist accurately better twelve months from now than they are now I think in others. Reasonable to have doubts about how much longer. Kind of the good times we've seen can keep going. Yes certainly in mean. That that is a risk. You know the big executive. Cited regulation and geopolitical uncertainty as the biggest risks and concerns they have to deal making. On the other side it is so the theory is if you're going to be heading into a period of slowing or you know economic recession. You wanna be big and you have some consolidations you can weathered that storm sewed two sides of the coin but. Clearly a lot of geo political and economic uncertainty out there and you're seeing is this is one of those early indicators that we see out there if people aren't willing to shell out cash for other companies. That begins to become a concern when compiled with other issues answered another version of that is are people waiting in thinking some people are getting beaten up in the next 1224 months and met he'll make better deals in 2019120. Jeremy not to mention him. Alec costs in other one or 2% in interest to borrow the money to acquire these companies now so that doesn't help either. Switching gears a little bit away from China although probably a lot of these things worth. I've manufactured in China the retailer mattress firm. Going bankrupt over the over the weekend match firm which operates over 3000 stores across the country declaring bankruptcy. Sounds like receive 700 locations going dark almost immediately. Have you ever seen anybody going into or walking out of a mattress firm. I went into one month's. I'd actually don't member prison mattress firmer one of the deal identical other stores that sell mattresses. It seems like there's twenty on every street corner that you want that you see India any of the major cities. Yeah I it's it was a weird place. The number of people that are behind matches online now. In the number of expansions at that that this company had done just didn't seem to add up to get is not terribly surprising that I've seen this company going and a business. Yet as I go by a couple every day and this got me thinking about I've never seen anybody. Going in a mattress store and you know these days what do better protective order. Get it delivered to your house like down on and if you don't like it return. It. So I might my wife bought one of these online match I don't remember which company she used it as a group on deal five years ago we ordered a reaction really liked it but. Thinking about that part that return process that wouldn't be very pleasant if we add to return. I mean first up yet to hold that 200 pound the box up three flights of stairs into herself the apartment South Boston apartment that was miserable. And and then if we get to bring nothing back down I genuinely don't know how we were done. That tiny hole I symbolically it's it might have involved a chainsaw and a wind. And so I see the appeal. To bind the mash on line clearly a lot of people are doing it because they're sending companies like mattress firm read at a business. That you brings me to our poll question today which is up on financial exchange showed dot com you can come vote I wanna see how many people. Not even if you have purchased and actually but do you know anyone who is bought and sometimes I think of him most of our listeners privacy notice it's not a purchase you make frequently. But do you know anyone who is bought and actors on line on yes to my wife did ten dad you've got to match online you know tournaments. Add their bottom nationalized code -- jordans or something last last matchup I was like two years ago ours went to Jordan delivered a format you pay more than I may you pay more for you know Jordan's actress and you will on an online retail I think you can save 3040% by going forward is common interest companies from what I've heard and then you have a neighbor of getting an after the third for the senate the apartment the do you that was pretty mr. that your friends over and then gotten on the pizza business and we were not as global cities to keep it. Dated if you about a national. It may in fact it makes me wonder I think that are mattress is probably. Seven years old at this point yeah but you know still working stole them. Well like I say go onto financial exchange showed dot com tell us if you've ever bought an actual line. Eating Texas as well our our text in number 63566. What are the biggest items you've ever that you if you haven't bought a match someone what are the biggest items that you bought on line of sight unseen. And really spent some dollars on damaged and that. We are gonna take quick break coming up we're going to be talking about between industry and what sort of holiday shopping season we might see with the Tories reps Toys 'R' Us bankruptcy earlier this year. Designed for those of you who wore landlords in used to collector checks. With paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Was he rent allows you'd collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy rat works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely buried so we we develops he rained two out of me the whole race because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You're missing envelope line in the post you waiting he might not get all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month furthermore if your landlord on vacation in your racing your notebooks up to what he does is it really gauge bill. It makes the ranked electronic payments it allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting at the college student absolutely. It's predictable it comes at the same time every month. And it's all on me. Stock which Gary Armstrong and shots are gonna fix the financial exchange on the financial exchange radio network. Go to Mac's financial changeup before the break we're talking about the bankruptcy of this firm and they're joining eleven other big retailers who have gone bankrupt this year which. To be fair is actually better than last year Lester wrist when he big name retailers going bankrupt including Toys 'R' Us. Died Gymboree domain name a few but let's let's go through this year because of the year is beyond the year is still young you know it we got a whole drawing out shopping season. Although usually you know they they get the money from the holiday shopping season and bankruptcy happens in January or February I feel like. But let's go to that list because it's important keep an eye on these especially if you ours and mystery in ball space or retail space you 10. What's going on with these retailers Peter run through Lester. National stores Gump's Brookstone rock port nine west players the walking company. Bond time Keiko and a catchy and nine west especially surprised because. It's where my wife was doing everything she possibly could to keep that she retailer in business. Yeah I was their Rockport surprised me a little bit. But it can't surprising these days retailers are struggling. Brick and mortar retailers are having a very very difficult time competing and don't ones that haven't figured out a way you like best buy has to adapt and survive are in some serious trouble when mattress for joining the list. Are we talked about Tories are Russ and so let's dive in orbit deeper there. 85%. Of the toys that are imported into the United States. Are manufactured in China rate. Toy makers again pretty nervous about this this trade negotiation what's gonna happen to to their supplies if they get it with tariffs they haven't so far specifically this industry has been largely avoided by terror so far. But getting trainers nervous to make news you know Hasbro Mattel these guys again somewhat concerned. And I retired I was actually surprised about that number was 1085%. Represented Toyota said you know 96%. And every. You know plastic piece of junk that comes into my hand seems like it's been made in China. Pretty big concern is that heads into this were heading into you know it's hard to believe that its Q4 now so we're already starting to think about Christmas in the big. Shopping season and happens. Pretty big hole left by Toys 'R' Us now they're gone you know a bunch are retailers are trying to snap all this business up. I don't think any of them are in a real position to do it. Nothing quite like that X. Each of going down you know fourteen miles of toys and to literacy interest in peace and Wall Street Journal about. You know for example target is trying to pick it up a little bit adding you know up to 500 square feet of toward retailing in 500 of its stores. Hundred square feet that's not one. In a note of 150 foot one mile yeah maybe. And you know Wal-Mart maybe some pop up stories we city. Yes that it dozens of party city operates bunches Halloween pop up shops and this year they're gonna do that Halloween pop up shops. Followed guy I guess their Christmas holiday season pop up shops called toy city stores. I think it could be very interesting season exists is the first you know holiday shopping Christmas whatever season where we're not going to have Toys 'R' Us and place. And I think a lot of these guys aren't gonna quite get it right. The big the big advantage that Toys 'R' Us brought was they just said. It we will deal will carry more inventory that we necessarily need this might have been what led to their denies. But you didn't have those huge shortages that your remember having Bakken you know those artificial shortages of like tickle me almost. Does that really happened in the last few years because. Because of large part the inventory that torturous would manage. I don't think that target Wal-Mart. Certainly not party city wanna get into that business I don't think they're gonna wanna hold on to inventory until January February march of the phone here and you know incredibly tricky thick gold you know talk about you know women's apparel incentive Dicey business but. Toys for kids you know you never know. What's going to be the breakout toy that I'll listen everybody has to have. And so in a community and forward to that my kids are only two right now so I don't have to really worry about you know the trending toward it. Really it's coming it's not a terrible when they're seven and eight years old it's coming at the target has an advantage you know half. That number of their stores are located half of which are located within five miles of where Toys 'R' Us close so they have the footprints to be able to do this. I just don't know that. Anyone's going to really add the ability of the relationships with the toy makers. And the physical space in their storage for place what Toys 'R' Us what's. And I could see somebody figuring out a way to cut come back into the business and be the new Toys 'R' Us and some odd to right. Maybe. Okay could be inching did the the auction of all the you know and the proprietary torturous. Information and Jerry the draft is all supposed to be auctioned off I think that's been delays Jerry is draft Jeffrey Jeffrey. Paerson I Jeffrey draft supposed to be auctioned off and soften you haven't. Heard that happening there has been you know rumors of people saying hey we really want to bring back this brand will buy out the you buy out the name and bring it back but. So far we haven't heard that if they're going to do that you would think that they would have in place certainly by Thanksgiving. Certainly about Thanksgiving and it's a place. So will say it's going to be an inch staying holiday shopping season this year I know it's early be thinking about but. Clearly the retailers are you know all these guys are really getting prepped up for trying to steal all of this. Business that was. Toys 'R' Us they did you know one points in billion dollars in sales. Last holiday seasons another another interest included keep tabs on Amazon. Toy catalogs beat him that the shoppers at whole foods that's going to be pretty intriguing. So Smart. I had me I think why would you wanna do that but. Yeah absolutely handout that toy catalog to you know the little kids toying around with their their mom and a whole foods and yeah that's a really really Smart move in and after selling the stuff and brick mortar locations is gay about the catalog people you know brown on Amazon.com don't make the purchase. Something else. Emerging markets. And online shopping we already do a ton of it here in United States is not a whole lot more room for growth. But this is the one area that clearly all those online retailers are targeting Amazon Wal-Mart big time. India has been a big B area of interest for them to wal mart's purchased aid the largest online retailer in India and I'm. Dropping the name right now. Ought to look at some regular tea form big Indian Amazon's competitors namely big investment in the Amazon was trying to do as well but he got out did. Here's some difficulties. Doing business in emerging marked is not like doing business here in the United States and they've got to figure those things out. And I would bet you know two or three times as much of the online shopping is done on mobile devices don't you and your Tyrod countries. Mexico. Indonesia. You know countries where. Far fewer people have died desktop computers that they're shopping and it's of that adds you know an interest in new wrinkle. Yeah I think there's big big room for innovation here because one. You know financial systems are not what they are here in the United States say a lot of you know emerging markets individuals don't have bank accounts because they don't trust the financial systems for good reason. You know infrastructure you don't have good roads. You don't have you easing methods to deliver items. And I would imagine in a lot of these emerging market countries got to be a lot more concerned about theft of packages than you do here in the states it's a big issue here it's probably a very big issue in Mexico India Brazil in these different countries that are. Torre with the idea but it's elegant figure out a payment system this could be huge in the sound guy shows up on a mule. So Mike Armstrong we got good news about GE's stock in the Wall Street watch. Yeah it's tough sailor got good news about G in any point in the shares are up this morning Barclays upgraded shares of G to overweight from equal weight. OK to quote there's even the most hurting skeptic might want to reconsider. Following is so weak. They knew leery Culp CEO chairman's. They've moved up that price target to sixteen dollars per share that news on that sock has driven the stock price up to about thirteen 57. Following the recent low they hit down to she's got. All the way down Q 1127. Per share so clearly bumping back up. On the other candy Evan. Few people arguing this might just be a dead cat bounce on NG the stock has bottomed out and bouncing back up a little bit we talked at length about the turnovers CO NG. And only time will tell if you know anything really change this year. Looking a broader markets as a whole the Dow which opened up down this morning is now up about ten points so just a fraction percent S&P Jess turned flat. And NASDAQ slightly down so number things going on the broad market's obviously we had a lot of volatility overnight in China following their announcement their going to be infusing a lot of cash into the economy. And then you do have some volatility just being built in around interest rates. Interest rates continue to climb up with suit bonds are treating it right now ten year treasuries trading right now at 3.2 33. It was under three and on a few months ago most this summer's tree around two point 8% that's adding a fair bit of volatility and the markets as well. As we know everything has moved off that seniors mortgage rates are up near now I think the I think the thirty year average mortgage rate is now up near 5%. Credit card rates on loan rates everything moving up which does have a slowdown impact on the economy. So first week of October and outlook and so great thus far two typically typically actually when you head into a mid term election. That heard time tends to be pretty good for stock market returns at least historically the weekend you have some very bad October's pasts. We'll see what's in whole forest. It was on Nike charting their future course for the store of the future we talked about. Retailers just going out of business left to right center but clearly some are doing something right way at one of these companies doing that really sets them apart from others. In the sense that this just walked in and grab it wacko no charge you which I don't feel like I'm ever gonna really be able to get used to them but seems a bit gimmicky. Yeah that might bring me in the first and try to Alley has school. But I it's gonna bring me back a dozen times just the fact that I don't have to check out and you deal with and term credit card I didn't think it you know if you've got to go in and get late. Foot fungus spray or. Android appointment you know what can be bad things could avoid dealing with a clerk but. And if you think you're on to something that may be a little gimmicky but Nike. I was fascinated to read about this called Nike buy Melrose it's in a new Easter they've put up in West Hollywood and LA. And what they do is they look at. Online purchases. In the neighborhood where this story is in the use those to drive what's on the shelves of the storm which he says that's pretty fast. I mean that that's really use New York. Creepy information that we don't give all these web sites him really abusing a creepy information the best of their abilities here I mean clearly obvious companies know all this information on all of us based on. Data analytics that our bed in all of the web sites that we visit but he's actually really using it a lot of stuff this year things pretty. Pretty important I mean they'd they'd just. You built up their about their partnership with Amazon you compile a lot more stuff that night he puts together on Amazon witches important. Also put the pressure on him on get rid of a lot of the knock offs that were available on the web sites they've done it. Stock this year is done tremendously well and you know they dig on this thank you Colin camper next here. Yeah here's your Nike investor guys stock this year started at 6350. Its nearly eighty dollars a share right now a lot of people thought you know that call separate story it was going to be a beam beam down for the stock that. Hasn't been so far investors still. Area of the company it's come off a little bit from their eyes they peaked at around 8550 in their day to about eighty bucks a share but. Doing a lot of stuff right in the face other really tough retail landscape. Not if you're aware order property manager I'm sure you've heard us talk about the rent leader banks tremendous online rent collection program. So for me get back to Amazon though they are doubling down on their private label business have you are you familiar with you know all the different brands and Amazon operates did you guys buy anything. Regularly from Amazon that is. Amazon made and labeled. That's if I have actually but you know only computer cables and batteries aside but Amazon's batteries have done yes or chargers the phone carriers ups a lot of their tech products I've bought as replacement Syria. Extension cords. Phone chargers batteries that dot. Mark momma bear diapers. So I was actually just looking at those marks I didn't know they existed mama bear diapers is Amazon's three and did diaper brands and frankly they read the entire reason that I have a BJ's membership at this point is because by its. Start with John about I think probably averaged ten to fifteen diapers today right now so we buy BJ's in pretty much pay for that membership that this is for your children. We should yet not for me personally. I don't personally need ten to fifteen diapers a day be pretty terrified by it. For my kids need a lot of diapers and it was on does have there own proprietary brand and look they're a little bit more expensive than beaches so I don't think it may need. Make that shift quite yet. But these are real threat. This is this is where companies really have to walk a balance here is you want your product on Amazon. But at the same time has not gonna do everything they can't to learn about the people that are buying your product and replace it with something they make it's that they're doing. Targeted job. A really really. Cut through good job at undercutting those other retailers that are putting their products names and a mean were just temporarily making money until Amazon puts us out of business and that's a whale look at the world yes it is basically just leasing our business from ams on Wednesday cut us out. I mean. To that to the point where they will actually you know you'll be browsing online and say you're looking at that sweater from it and I don't know old navy that's for sale on Amazon. They all actually at the bottom of the page. Say you know other people looked at this product witches day in a prime product they don't. Pray in that specific language but they'll they'll direct you to pay this is of the Amazon projects that and by the way it's about 15% cheaper you're watching the ones that. There they they lacked a few areas of expertise Amazon's I don't think ever going to get and does their really innovating and bring new fashions in the forefront. But in terms of learning about their customers and driving them to the product names on wants them to. No one's better. But who would've ever imagined. Back in the day it was on going into producing. Movies or you know Amazon going into. Leasing space in cloud Internet computer server farms sliding age fifteen years ago you and even thought. You wouldn't even know what a cloud farm aid is you'd have no concept idea idea. Today it's in their biggest profit drivers Amazon Web Services. Yes and you wouldn't have thought that a bookseller would have gotten into literally everything at this point they they do everything. So it's I don't necessarily rule out in the future there doing product design and you know things that you don't even even manufacturing. And you know they will always have that colossal advantage of knowing what everybody in the world buys and why and who they are what they want and what they return and you nested that bubble of information even if you're not an especially creative or inspired product designer. What's he take that deal that gives you huge leg up over people who maybe you know much more artistic and inspirational and produce and things but. Well I've made I mean to beat a dead horse but let's talk about what you do when you when you subscribe to Amazon. A 120 bucks a year ray they just jacked up the price died adding 10%. Earlier this year. What do you get so first off you save money on just the purchases that you make on Amazon it's cheaper if your prime member for a numbered for goods. You get video streaming they've got their time and they're creating their own content and also buying competency and goes stream ship television shows and movies on New Year's online device you can stream music. Yet you didn't use Amazon prime music not a Spotify Spotify. C I eight was paying for the pandora Spotify I don't remember. That are as you know I've already paying for hands on attested that that's pretty good it's actually didn't think about that yet. Go take a look to ten dollar Spotify membership and you think about if I'm already paying the 120 bucks a year to Amazon. Try it out anyway. As the music selection and is on fine saying things spot by Purdue I don't know if it's quite discus elections here are really getting out there and listen to a lot of different stuff than maybe it's not quite as good. For me it's fine. For me it's perfectly when he negotiate your I'm like digital storage. To get a deal in the Washington Post and get them you for every hourly essentially I am for Fareed but it's its gas price discount as they on the post as well. And they're opening up these stories to these pop up stores sounds like. Amazon opens first Forestar. Concept store in New York back in September is this take a bunch of goods from their website that received four stars and above. And Ramon store for people to shop. Two weighted by Jerry doesn't build the boring and nothing else again it's it's a classic game is on story they just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. I know it is going to be a good dude yeah a good deal for them they gonna just lose money on its I don't know but. They're getting their name out there and we're talking about them because. I love when you're meant to talk about the value prime there is recent analysis by JPMorgan. That you pay a 120 bucks. The year for prime but it's actually worth 785. Dollars on the stuff that we've been talking about. Which I think is pretty darn impressive. Yeah I mean I guess if you are tallied up via if you compare. Let's say if you if you talent at the cost of the Netflix vs Amazon prime tally at the cost Spotify verses trying to get it to competing costs there. The cost savings and all the deliveries and the tribal foods in over his path that whole foods I say close I suppose you could maybe justify that. Anyway but let's take a quick break before we absolutely kill him is on here coming up we're talk a little bit more about interest rates and what you're seeing how it's impacting the auto industry. Cushing and old guy for the month October called Medicaid income trusts. Todd I have to confess the average person. Is not going to know win the trust documents they have are right or wrong the need to rely on whoever their tourney would be. What should they be looking for when selecting an attorney to draft. And Medicaid income trust or an asset protection trust you know their I think that's the best question ever because you're right they don't know as much as we try to educate them. It's just too hard the language is too technical. And and people aren't gonna know one player and others so when you're looking to hire a lawyer to do this. I think one you should find out if they spend a 100% of their time. Doing best they play the taxes estates trusts you know that's it. If they're busy running their personal injury court they can't keep opera you know it's hard enough for me to keep up and I total time. But also make sure on their card when you get their card that you see the letters LL and after their name. That usually means that they have a masters in legal letters and taxation mean certainly need that need to understand taxes when you're drafting trust you zoo authorities tell you that from personal experience. And lastly I would say when you leave the meeting you know what you want to have a flat feet. Regular note it's gonna cut you don't wanna be billed you know by the hour for this work exactly and when you leave had a great understanding of what was done you're not asking more questions. Moving over to more international stories we've had the sanctions on Iran snapping back for the last few months now and we had a similar story on Friday. About how few European countries were trying to get around the new US sanctions that were placed on but. Most of the European companies. Big you know tort Hollis French oil company and most that banks. Won't touch it because the second they know that they you know they. Defy one of these US sanctions and there are going to be pretty much prohibited from doing business have been US bank. But India. Has said that they are going to continue to import the oil from the from my the Iranians. India the third largest. Oil importer in the world. I will be very interested to see how you know who in the White House reacts to this. This woman I'd go over very well now it probably wanted generally speaking what what we've done with the other countries is you know will allow them to wean themselves off by Iranian oil as well as they commit to not importing anymore going forward so remembering those Iranian oil imports down to zero. That doesn't seem to be what India is saying here. There's an existing people line in the CNBC's during about this India Iran oil situation. The very industry this takes some energy marketing analysts expect around 500000 barrels per day to disappear once US sanctions against Iran commit to force. While others have warned as much as two million barrels per day you come off line in other words experts have no idea what's gonna happen and you know how much of east. Sanctions gonna bite now it's gonna run cheat and who's gonna close with the. Only deals always just seeps out of the country. A you'd put sanctions on the trying get it into state in the country not get export it always finds a way out today it's always pretty sketchy but it always does seem to find a way out. As you probably will see a price impact and you've already seen a bit of a price impact on rising prices of oil because of this. My concern centers around how these countries are going to do it because. If China if Russia if India if parts of Europe get together and say hey we are going to. Forget about the United States new sanctions. There's a deal in place and we are going to abide by the prior deal. And still do business about Iran and they would have to do so in a currency other than the US dollar. And that's my concern is yet it's just one independent scenario here but right now. Everything is traded in dollars oil being the main everybody pays dollars for oil. If all of a sudden you get that change and suddenly people are paying their Chinese rule on effort for oil. That could have a big ripple effect on him down the line and is. Maybe the US dollar gets replaced as the default currency for trade that would be really very concerned it's an awfully good thing when your currencies the world's reserve currency damp and there we are very we are the most reliable currency out there. And I don't think that this one event is going to change in this one event in Iran is not going to completely change that. But when you compound this with potentially other issues down the road. That's where you can have some concerns about you know build the US currency will the dollar still be in the same place a decade from now. Compared to where it is today. At an it might be nothing that. It raises some concern. We had a big election. Over the weekend on Sunday in Brazil is very very big election. With a ultra conservative candidate BA comparisons to Donald Trump who. Came away with a big portion of the vote she did not win the election Brazil does elections will be differently. They have a big election with all the all of the people running and then if nobody gets 50%. Then there's a runoff so we're heading to a runoff but looks like there's going to be a big shift. Power and Brazil. Well and entered it just such a mess down there in terms of you know a level of debt there ought to be you know 80% of GDP. In dead and the government spending and appreciated this mentally where this is morning. Two thirds of the budget. In Brazil goes for old age pensions public health care and the role of the public sector. By 20/20 that's gonna be the entire budget there's no money left for schools roads highways. You know sister out of control so you conceived wary you know ball tomorrow. Comes from in terms of people being fed up with. You know getting whacked with taxes to pay for it colossal government sector. Yes a jet it's just a year bulls tomorrow i.'s former army captain is pretty much being going up against the of the leftist Fernando who died. At the left working party has been in control in Brazil for I think a decade or more. Nobody down I spent a service time in Brazil and nobody in there has any faith in the government and rampant corruption for years and years and years. And bad economic they please rate of one exporter Brazil are working Brazilians. But in the outlook clean my house. You're right if it's it's not a good economy. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Welcome back the financial exchange got Mike Armstrong Peter how Tim Donovan would do this morning Columbus Day morning and we got a lot to cover today. We're really join a little bit by agers Kowloon from the economists he's gonna tell us talk to us about Amazon's new fifteen dollar minimum wage is probably also going to correct announces name that probably got that wrong. Talking about being in other big retailer that went out of business I wanna start off with China talked about that a little bit on the first hour. Over the weekend they reduced there requirement for banks to keep cash on so. The amount of money that the amount of money on deposit that must be capped. In cash was lowered. Meaning effectively China just pumped in about a 175 billion dollars in there economy. Good thing probably for the short term it and if you're looking at spinners doing business in China and the availability of capital. The pretty dangerous to go over the long term and that seems to be the perspective that most investors took the Chinese stock market is down nearly 4% three point 7% over night. As investors reacted to this news. That clearly the economy needs a big influx of cash right now and get us. Wondering why is that muscle whose retirement last. Our at the the governess ordered journalists not to talk out loud about slowing economy here recollections about the stock markets so clearly something is going on and you know stock market is very famous for shoot first ask questions later. And I think you know people are wise to ease up on Chinese stocks until we get a little more clarity about just what's going on in just a bad as it. That's right. This year by the way Chinese stock market down 15%. So clearly some concerns about growth ability to maintain growth they've seen over the years and it clearly some continued concerns about just what the stability looks like overseas in China. Coming domestically however we have another retailer that went out of business and that brings us to our poll out of the financial exchange so mattress firm who operates more than 3000 retail locations across the United States declared bankruptcy. There'd be closing at least 700 stores pretty quickly 200 almost in the next couple days. And my question to folks to our listeners as have you or do you know anyone who has purchased. In mattress online I do my wife purchased one about five years online Timmy said you guys. Jeff I don't know you know we want to learn my story I gotta check on the first lap on stripper red and Daniel Webster. And so right now. The results of the poll on financial exchange showed dot com 41%. Of our listeners to refresh his actions still right but 41% of our listeners. Excuse me 37% of our listeners have bought or no some who have bought a match on line about 63%. Have not even 37%. That's pretty big number. And that that to me he explains. Why 3000. Plus locations of the mattress company was not quite sustainable firfer from Pittsburgh was gonna say the way I look at that number sixty. He percent of people heaven by a mattress on line and they don't even know anybody who's right on online which. You know if you sell a product that you know three out of five. People. Are not necessarily interest in buying gonna think twice about that. Right I can text the show the number text in a 63566. If you haven't bought a mattress on my what is the largest purchase that you made on line site unseen. You know I'm not I'm no I went to best guy tried out this camera in the bottom line instead. What is a big purchase that you've made without actually testing it out in person first that's when that's when I'm pretty interested. Indeed Texas again 63566. Is the text in number. Looking ahead at the US markets are right now. US markets are about flat. They opened up down this morning but there there about flat at this point. They were heading right into earnings season so third quarter earnings seasons kicking off on Friday that the banks that report first. JPMorgan Chase. Wells Fargo and Citigroup as well as PNC financial reporting. And it's going to be a pretty big quarter dude we've got a few quarters under our belts now under the new tax reform bills that's kind of behind us. And to be anxious to see what investors are really looking for in this in this quarter earnings reports. And you know the question of tariffs on China okay how much of impact is that having because you see. Something like a third of the revenue for the S&P 500 companies comes from outside the US so you know you certainly you've seen. Some specific companies that are really be blanked by the China tour. Ers but you know boost earnings season could give us a sensitive. The broader economy wide impact what essentially is a tax on you know 200 billion dollars worth of stuff that we buy. I correct myself by the way markets for flat about fifteen minutes ago right now Dow is down about seventy points S&P off seven. NASDAQ off 45 points slowed down and S&P down about a quarter of 1% the NASDAQ off about more than half a percent. That would make a three day losing streak of this comes to fruition so so far pretty rough October. In addition earnings though he had a big backdrop that we have other than earnings of the terrorists is interest rates. So ten year treasury yield. Is now up you know pretty far above 3% were at 3.2 33%. On the ten year treasury. As we all know that impacts everything that we do you go get a car loan you get a mortgage. Any of these things are going to be impacted by the ten year treasury rate and that's been on the move. Really since the end of the summer when. Amazed to see it jumped fifteen basis points last week zero point 15%. And he you know in the in the snoozing world of bond trading you know that's epic yet have a move that big and one weekend you know as you pointed out it really been around two point 8% for most of us are so. You know it's a sort of bad news good news thinkers to me the reason the interest rates going up is because economies too long while and the Fed can breezed interest rates and you know we're seeing some. I I would say for now fairly positive signs of inflation and growth. So you know every. Every piece of economic data you can argue his. Good or bad yeah we did get. So we got a jobs report on Friday and you reiterated an incredibly low unemployment rate we're down three point 7% unemployment. Wage growth was up an annualized rate of two point 8% but it's been accelerating so it's the annualized rates two point 8% but if you look at the last. You know quarter by quarter we've been getting faster and faster here so. I think there are some legitimate concerns that the Fed has about inflation. As as you see interest rates and that's the reaction is they're moving up interest rates but. Wage growth is the big ones that we've been watching it and if there's one thing that I think you really need to keep this stock market in the US economy afloat for another few years. It's gonna be it's going to be coming from the consumer. Yeah it's got to come from the American consumer make little bit more money. And spending that money on things like cars like toys like all that in all that useless junk that we don't need but that keeps our economy float. 70% in the economy. You write me and every spending. So speaking of interest rates. Last decade you know if you want to go buy new car you get a pretty sweet deal on financing the 0% financing deals really keen. About right after that the Great Recession all these car companies several we got to sell these are somehow so how to we do we'll get an it would 0% financing. Lot harder to find these days. When I was amazed when you started seeing you know 0% for one year three years. Those you know a great deal but when you stretching 72 month. Zero interest loans and that's really. Visit the wonder taking a major risk about what's the future yeah I mean. I would do with 72 months loan on a car by as your percent but. You really got to think about what us don't don't just sign up for one of these car payments people. 72 month loan yet those payments are really small. How how often you have to replace a carb for 72 months goes by. And I try and drive my cars into the ground by. If you do a fair bit of driving there's a pretty good chance your answer replaced that car for six years goes. Yeah and you get a big you know or you gets total and the under under on the car pretty quickly yeah. Paid those deals are going away you see is 0% financing deal on a car. Usually it's for a couple reasons one it's just some can't sell anymore so you you're still seeing some of these deals on the smaller size sedans that just selling very well right now everybody wants the smallest UV. Sedans just are really going to their putting some decent financing deals on those. But it they're really by and large have gone way to your percent. Well these JD power numbers two years ago nine point 1% of all new cars console with the zero interest loan. Now it's just 3.4 percent and even if you know tournament the effective. Interest rates. Percentage of cars finance for the interest rate of 1% or lower. That's just five point 3%. And that was a number that was eleven point 7% September. Twenty sixteenths and definitely people you know digging deeper into the wallet to pay for new car. Yep I did a despondent. Spotted minivan about a month ago because I've had my third did and so I jumped on the bandwagon epic mind. My insurer of cars over 3% now for only 48 month alone so. You're seeing it interest rates are moving up. You're trying to lock in a mortgage or anything like that I don't think they're going down any time soon it seems to be like it's going in just one direction. Sue dominion is like a colonoscopy nobody wants to get one but you get to that point like when you have to yeah now I'm all about. It's it's super cool. We are gonna take a quick break here we're in Regina we come back by agers calories from the economist talking to us about Amazon's new fifteen dollar minimum wage what that means for Amazon but what that means for the larger retail landscape as a whole. Our time. I intend worker at a lot higher for the holidays even. Currently he knows that the average errors in the US wage for. Worker including 080 yeah apple. They were corporate headquarters is roughly 34000 dollars. Which is that dollars and cents per hour. So the company that everyone will be Gatorade including people. Are our. We're not sure that where one can believe in leisure. Group will be heeded our. So either late last year early this year Wal-Mart bumped up there minimum wage to eleven boxing or how how big it is how heavily. Is the pressure really on them at this point. Yeah that is the really interesting question Michael you have two different sources were on the main one being political pressure. And Bernie Sanders has been pushing them or nearly year. Raised their way is you recently just last month released he legislation call eight. You know the target was clear. And that would and charge him about patent but you'd pay program but it's important he. Bernard Allen who can't and non employee to be in the app PayPal route. Whether they're responding to that after their political left. Or whether they are simply wait wait because there's a tight labor market. And unemployment is as low and ability to attract workers. You know that the big question. Obviously it occur and that it ammunition. The American left little but the back and then. We're. Mark conditions are indeed very gracious or out of the deal. And it interest what is it about this theory that what basis is doing is sort of taken the political upset by going to fifteen dollars and then he's gonna put pressure on. Congress and states to raise the wage for all his competitors so we sort of you know heads he wins tails he wins as well. Yeah also really interesting where people there is Amazon is now saying that they're gonna muted the lobbying arm. Which is quite substantial one of the biggest in terms of bad. And they're gonna push for a higher federal minimum wage now they're not pushing for a moment like it in it and what that number will be and we get an abdominal weight right now I don't know that we and it happened changed and you know not. Now they didn't do a lot in a different outcomes depending on how high they're pushing. And the middle increased then maybe don't want their employers but because this type it in imposing higher costs on employers and the Lou. Profit share. Factor could be really DMZ there are bidders. You know evidence that Amazon is it early candidate. Economy you know that more automated and the media can bear the brunt of the call battered and editor. And what we're not a word are clear what the actual motivation is Amazon is saying that it is me. There this year and he anti corporate responsibility. The mission. And we're we're not sure about what's going on what we do know is that Amazon is not usually eight to political pressure. Seattle to attack the 225 dollars per person. And Amazon ambitiously audit they said that they weren't I believe it off the building. And they definitely another in the city outward person now and quite pushover when it comes to political pressure. Meaning that there might be some other patient and work well. It's it it's in standing interest in timing as well I mean obviously they've got all of the whole foods employees now they also did just roll out that new program where there. Leasing trucks to business owners that wanna start delivering Amazon packages I would guess that those employees are probably not going to be subject to this fifteen dollar minimum wage because they're not going to be direct Amazon employees or contractors. And I wonder how much more of their business they can really do that way. And bloated that there fifty normative way people like contractors and those folks should be color while and it should also apply all of employees and there's another kind of been been bitten people well. Because whole new employees. The big question unionization. Give him a note this published eighty. Built on videos that was a poll that matters that. Reportedly. You know it up at a an economy organizing. And this is kind of the class school moved you know you don't want your employees. Organizing unions. Raising wages. And believe it does the pressure and that title of the there. Well whatever theory is behind it a lot of employees see and pay a pay increase coming down the pipe here and it didn't come from government legislation so is a you know whatever the causes the the impact is that a bunch of people again reason it's going to probably put pressure on other employees which they're on other big employers which can only be a good thing for workers so. It just appreciate coming on the show and explain the situation dress thanks for coming on. I. And I. Everything Amazon does united they they love to shake things up and it's at a presumably they've done a fair bit of research on this my guess is that they were probably in the position where they're having to pay most their employees pretty darn close to fifteen bucks an hour anyway. I would they even get away with paying less at you know warehouses in the middle of the country bad. Its interest to me that you know of a two under 50000 employees we still don't know how many are actually gonna get this fifteen dollar. Raised and you know in guidance on earnings that was what sort of impact is gonna have fun. Earnings growth. It it's likely I think I think. I subscribe your theory that is probably by the standards millions on a cheap and easy move for them to make. Yeah. Man I always give him is on the benefit of the doubt because they've been. And we say cheap son of a gun I need to take some income from a powerful. And well. Larry chuck in the financial exchange on FaceBook FaceBook dot com slash the financial exchange this is that financial exchange radio network. They seemed to be to me at least a lot of confusion these days about the health insurance market. It's not you got an employer and yet they're covering your health insurance that's pretty simple. It's not trying to it's possible tractor or what's covered and how much it costs. But at least you know what you're expected to pay is pretty simple. But with you know the rollout of the Affordable Care Act and and the united changes that were made the Affordable Care Act a lot has been changing of the last few years. And now there's these. Almost like gap insurance policies that you can go out there and by short term short term insurance theater they were designed to really. Only cover insurance for a period of three months of your in between jobs or something like that. But they're now being sold on a longer term basis. They can be really cheap you know as much as fifty to 80% cheaper than planes available and Affordable Care Act but as we're learning. They are you know specifically. Very different from what we think of as your typical health insurance. And I mean they're completely terrible this straight were looking at from CNBC. You know 101000 dollar deductibles BO coverage of preexisting conditions no prescription drug. Coverage no subsidies he you know you can't renew them see you go from one provider to another. And I get the industry and I said yeah why would you even paid for the coverage in the first place and seems like you better off just not even going totally uncovered. You know I think what this type I think I am revenue disagree if you little bit there I mean what if you really do your research what this is covering. You for is somebody that says I don't want health insurance but if I have a heart attack don't go bankrupt. Nowadays it Zain if if you have to have an emergency really expensive procedure it's gonna covered. It is recover pretty much nothing else. As say you're pre existing conditions you'll even be approved for the health insurance in the first place or don't worry about it. It doesn't cover prescription drugs were largely. Sky high deductibles or talked about that 101000 dollar deductibles. Yet thing I didn't realize those are if you buy one of these policies and then it expires as their three month policies you can't just go back and buy an affordable care policy. If you get rid of one of these policy you have to wait until the open enrollment period. Witches actually remember one this year now. The other thing too is their subsidies available if you're an Affordable Care Act policy these types that do not offer subsidies. So you do it's tough these days you really do need to research this action doctor guy. Just last week who was running a small business he had been in corporate America for years. Start a small business really. The politics of the Affordable Care Act really rubbed in the wrong way so he just wasn't carrying any health insurance. Up until that point. It didn't really it it didn't really seem to click like. Yeah I mean if I if I get a car accident. If guys if something happens. All lose house I'll lose anything that I have beacons you know any visits the emergency room these days cost thousands of dollars. I hadn't had a client to had heart transplant. The bill the insurance companies one million dollars. What you do if you mean if you didn't have health insurance traders toast. In the hospital for two months. All sorts prescriptions and that's nothing rate you know. Yet as a cover the heart transplant these basic insurance policies. But how about all the prescriptions are yet to be on the rest of your life that this this health insurance doesn't cover all that yes or interest to deceive them. The blaster which the between sixty and there about a 160000. People in America who have. The short term coverage plans will be pursued receded the updated numbers and analysis can do. Maybe 500000 her or even a million in the day the penalty goes away and you don't pay a penalty if you don't have health insurance I think a lot of people drop off. And it's a big bill if if you earn a diss that they are small business owner you're just independent contractor and you make a decent wage. Cash for you know a decent affordable care policy shall now. 800000. Bucks a month for just an individual family plan 2000 when he 400 it's big big money I get why people don't have insurance it's really really costly but. You really need to think through the implications after can carry health insurance. Folks you have a trust to protect your assets if nodding your closing in on retirement this messages for you. Another story out of the Wall Street Journal today in spite of the fact that the US has really not spent much of anything on infrastructure the last few years it has been I'd be running point for a lot of politicians recently. New president trump wants to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure and there's. Yeah some debate as to how we might get that done there's some rumors that he might be working with Democrats in the next and next cycles trying get this done but in spite of all that. The amount of funds being raised by investors for infrastructure spending has been booming over this year. 68 billion dollars in the first three quarters. Of the year which is really interesting and you know this is not necessarily a slam document of the Spanish. Consortium that bought the Indian a whole world yet and you would think. How can you possibly go out of business you know it's that this is where people they've literally drive up and hand you money if if if and somehow they managed to screw that up they get into bankruptcy and you know so there's a lot of money and what the take away I get from this pieces that it's a lot of money it's struggling to find. Where the opportunities are there really makes sense you've allotted in Telecom and you know people buying. Like AT&T data senators who younger cellphone towers but you know you would think. Somebody who would like to buy you know the Tobin Bridge in buster just collect. Tolls all they want those deals don't seem to happen. No I mean particularly here in this country most of our infrastructure is funded via. Public partnership they re be raised on as we sell bonds to raise money to spend money and structure. But if you go to different countries and there's a lot of privatization of it structure you can own and operate highway and you know use your discretion on how to build that. What I see mrs. I see a lot of investors saying I'm getting concerned about the stock market. I don't know what to do with these funds so you know private equity managers that the guys that are managed in the big money are saying OK well we're gonna go look for some sort of alternative investment in infrastructures where they go do that but. You're right it's wrought with issues you know big big overhead. You have a whole different set of rest risks when you're dealing with infrastructure issues you know we've got to. Topical right hurricane bearing down on Florida right now and yeah melodies and structure project got word that's so bridge collapse in Italy. Nonetheless. Lot of money being raised for infrastructure spending which could be a good move especially if there is some public projects. Approved. Next year. By the drug administration's doubles there. The avenues from GE about their new CEO has a lot of companies will be shaken it sounds like they they selected a member of their boards to be the new CEO. And it seems like a lot of these companies are now kind of questioning that that process it's only happened sixteen times since toward their team where. A board member than succeeds the CEO of the fires CEO and then choose the board members serve within the S&P 500003500. In it has been strange process if you're a member of the board your job is to oversee that CEO. You're also the one ousting him replacing him with yourself hammer her with yourself which is a bit of that strange conflict of interest. If each and I do think that you know having a young. CEO that's you know in other businesses is good for a board but I don't know how you protect against that risk if you're the CEO of that company. The unit be bent over backwards to be super careful and you know if you're the board somehow make clear that. This is a one time only decision words you know the person steps off the board. While you've consider them you know to do this CEO search but I agree it's totally for a clearly investors are pretty happy about it g.s out this morning we did. A little bit of a report on them but they're up over 3% this morning trying to make that the what is being in the absolute disaster for the last. I've really the last decade but this year in particular stock gone from 24 dollars shared cancer awareness today which is about thirteen sixty per share so. We'll see hopefully can see some sort of turnaround for G but I I'd really have stopped putting faith and turnaround on this company itself. Or check out here at right around eighty album now. Get in Amy Graham. Lincoln Navigator. Holy cow but 80000 bucks and you still have. Three on the three shifting. Well it could and speed automatic transmission but yeah I mean it it you know a three on the tree right exactly I know at that. Like driving a rock it really does however. If art.
