This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chuck Exxon. It would appear that it needs your first name is going to hit the coast. North Carolina talk about the economic and financial impact of that hurricane. Ross gonna take a look at the labor report this morning got a jolt report just moments ago and finally we'll dig into their retirement savings crisis hi everybody it's Barry and John Maloney a few here. Tuesday morning were a little rain bits and again our friends down on the Carolina coast. Their buttoning down and I don't know that they're going to be prepared well they they are not as prepared I think generally as Southport the Florida coast because. Given that an event like this in thirty years you know when you look at the coast you say well they they should be right in the area we'd be preparing for hurricane. The fact of the matter is they haven't had that many there and it's been a long time. But that's a hurricane looks like a real doozy I mean right now it's a category four. Edging close to a category five a tea for if you're not aware yeah yeah I think those are about a 150 miles an hour. And that is just if for it to three hits the Caroline knows is that you noticed John. They're not ready in greatly. It'll build think their houses are need to cement the don't all have storm shutters and me that's how you build your hurricane now. The damage is going to be terrible. You know I guess the only silver bullet you were the only good news is. You don't have that the population Massey would have been so fla where it's hitting right now is in a fairly populated area and the other issue here Berry is. In addition to what's estimated to be up to 27 billion dollars in physical damage. Which is a lot for an area that doesn't have a lot of high value realist a visit to destroy. The real issue here I think is going to be a lot like we saw with hurricane Harvey last year. This storm is gonna hit. This looks like a direct hit in North Carolina on the coast when they talked for Friday 2 o'clock in the morning news when it's hosting Atlanta really Thursday night. And wake up to this Friday morning and in what's gonna happen is what you gonna wake up to is this warm refuses to move. Once it gets over land mass is supposed to just. Hang out for a while a war like we sort of party and the result could be that this storm's biggest impact could be. Massive flooding along the lines of what we saw. With hurricane hardly the thing I'm really concerned about is. As you know the fastest arguing the fastest growing part of our country is just inland from there other Research Triangle the Raleigh dorm. I'm Greensboro high it's pretty far. Here's the problem that storm is gonna stole all forward they or and they could end up getting twelve inches wore a rain very quickly. That's gonna cause major flooding problems to Rancho rain is expected. Massive flooding. In place in about 27 billion dollars of damage is estimated by insurance companies now. Economically and that's we're in the business of you know what does this mean. Ironically. These things are actually very beneficial to the economy or because what happens is you need to now spend. Billions of dollars quickly and those are families that have insurance to correct. Well those are homes late when we got hit last year in the Virgin Islands and we had insurance right so it's a different deal out there. In North Carolina people have insurance that would injure it absolutely and it also the government insurance will kick in in certain areas 20. It to Angelina panic in your C schools underwater yet to see a lot of damage to municipal buildings. You see and that let's talk about the need for workers carpenters electricians roofers. Estimate yours rate in the insurance system meters going you know when when I heard about this. I watched HGTV. The authority. I'm one of those HGTV all right there was an account there with me I'm sort of here that is well I dream of owning a house and I you know I. I I'd like globe that are listed as my favorite show but anyway those that couple dozen story and a couple but they they work really well together. David and in Hillary. They work. They do all their shows in the Research Triangle all those episodes UC RR in Raleigh Durham. Or you know that are Casper Greensboro, North Carolina. That he's going to be really hard hit to your point this is arguably the fastest growing section of the United States. Already there are huge labor shortages there so you at the fastest growing gallery in the country. With labor shortages nationally now you can have to do massive rebuilding and to the tune of billions of dollars. With people who already. Don't have enough time of the day to do what worked and they have to do they're still working in Houston yeah you know you'd get I can tell you in the Virgin Islands. The they're still working down there and they're not close to be in Puerto Rico Puerto Rico as you know they just scratched the surface that he's got electricity. In Puerto Rico it's a year now I mean it's been devastating and so again you know. Economically. Like in bad times there's a real silver lining to these I've seen these hit in recession jail and I seen the United States come booming out of the recession or not in a recently that our challenge and in that leads us to our other lead story if it. The job opening in labor turnover survey which we usually like to see that number higher and higher because earnings as more opportunities. Well there's six point 93 million. Jobs open and on right now so help me so I understand why. Labor participation rate dropped. On Friday. And unemployment went up which is not the end of the world but in two weeks he still I am not satisfied with their original up a little bit and you're still a four was a pretty good number last time you have it you look at that you compared to inflation rate he says okay what's inflation point three Steve making a little bit more your work and really are right right. Making it had more. But that brings the book I. Hey is going higher each each we're shocked and it's not higher than this well a lot of people think that it's being measured improperly. A lot of people think if you if you talk to economists say will bury your measuring wrong. Because what's happening news. That worker for GE would just use them as an example right retires with a sour about 1101000 dollars and was replaced by a worker does the same job. That is only getting paid 60000. Call it that the date when I'm told by people who studied the labor is that that's the reason units in the PH. You are seeing a transition from older people retiring 101000 people per day turns 64. That's a fact that we knew was coming years and events. At the same time we have a record number of people finally now entering the workforce. In their twenties and sometimes even in their thirties. Entry level. It's decent entry level pay but it's much less than the people stepping aside. 101000 people a day at 65. Those jobs they're leaving are not being paid so that way you do you are you in agreement that's holding wages back artificially. Yes I I I I think it's holding back the number that we're report also the big question if you're in the trades. You know thinking about you your truck driver right Dave your rights if you're in the trucking industry those companies are. Experiencing turnover in excess of a 100%. Yeah I mean to be at a hundred drivers. On September 11 a twenty team. Twelve months from you're gonna have a hundred different guys. And mechanics and pay is going higher in the series I think out of necessity so. I guess you. And irk the issue with respect to the the income which I think is actually a lot higher than reported that is if you got that dynamic of a hire people higher pay which people retiring being replaced by lower paid entry level people. But you also have the gig economy we've talked about before a lot of money he may be coming in under the table and not being reported. And you know there are quirks in registering like the gross domestic product in the income yes someone gave a good example to me. Imagine that you hire a housekeeper. That adds to GDP right pay the person to a bucks a week a hundred bucks we clean house. They got a job you've gotten the economy. Happens if you merrier housekeeper. You just subtracted from GDP. Like east that it. Trust you merry merrier pair more finger. And it just it happens and you've identified the cork. That person. Who is subtracting from GDP. Is not just getting under bucked the clean your house they're getting free rent they're getting meals they're getting vacations are getting furniture part. But they're subtracting from GDP in half or whatever you have when you were. The that does seem like it should be negative GDP but again quirks like that happen Nokia in a statistical world let's talk about the retirement savings crisis America. Is not confident that they conceded 37%. Of people. Are not confident that he will be of the staff enough cash away. Compared to 32%. To say the hand mrs. Serbia and Geithner now it is the bifurcated it's. Or hear words like there's more people feeling confident they can reach their goals. And there's actually kind of more people worried that they're not going to be in again deals with the the different nature of this economy. Opposite the haves and have nots but there's a lot of winners and there's also losers. And this Serbia I think it was generally positive because the talks about the fact that for the first time in our history that I didn't realize spiritually I read this. The average 401K accounts according to fidelity which the largest player for one case. The average 401K account is in six figures could Ian. Which on your rate is so. In six that you didn't I read there's a record number four when came millionaires up 40%. Now a bunch of people apparently just below that number. And this number brought them over a million they have sought markets but it. It but think he absolutely think psychologically. What that that's when you become a 401K millionaire you're feeling a lot better about your future. And I'll be here probably think and act in order. Absolutely. And be replaced by a corporate work with us welcomes guest there. Well our poll question today is do you have enough money saved for retirement. Designed for those of you who wore landlords and used to collector checks with paper checks are gosh maybe still do. Was he rent allows you to collect checks electronically. Jail is hoping he could spend a little bit of time explaining how easy grant works and why it's a big advantage for landlords. Absolutely vary so we we develops he rained two out of me the whole race because right now. You know with the landlord when you're getting rain checks in the mail it's low it's unpredictable. You're missing envelope line in the post are you waiting human neck and all the rent until the tenth or fifteenth of the month furthermore if your landlord on vacation in your racing your notebooks up to what he does is it really gauge rises though. It makes the ranked electronic payments and allows for roomy cheering for multiple roommates and apartments that's great if you're renting out to college student absolutely. And on the text line John as a relates to our conversation regarding retirement. 774 rates and very I'm 33 years old have nowhere near enough and might count to retire but 20000 dollars in the world and came in about a long way to go guys. Well he's right. At 20000 dollars each thirty threes too little. It buys time of 33 assuming you've been working for eleven years. You should have theoretically couple 100000 dollars ready for democracy for retire but don't give up. Beatle 'cause you know what you're still young enough to seriously. Positively impact your life and he may be of the eight years at the age where he lived through the Great Recession and he may have had a lot of years or she may have had a lot of years. Where. They just weren't working yeah Leahy the EU if you're 33 your like prime time you get slammed by the recession by 2000. I mean I'm kind of in that same boat we counter and a recession news. Are the took awhile for me to get full time job so I'm kind of a Nazi camp in terms of Lara M I'm pretty far behind now. Now you'll be working to hear about 75. So you can have you had years talker where you be of the catch up and that's the key things you know the bios tell young people lose you know. Be as active as you can put away as much as you can tell this to my kids put as much two ways you can now because the other thing happens news. Your 3033 now. By time yet to be 4550. You might have kids going to college you know we not be deceit for retirement or you may not be of the Max out during those years absolutely does it don't feel too bad though because. Look that's actually this guy's doing better than a lot of people. So so you don't be encouraged that. The first 20000 dollars is the toughest 20000 dollars if you can really dedicate yourself the next ten years you know looking back in my life Berry. The next ten years of this guy's life with the years were I accumulated whatever wealth playing out pretty much I got a little bit of a head start but those were real big years. And he can live a little bit below his lifestyle would dictate. You know not by as much house is the real to want should abide by a little bit less of a car and put that aside ten years of dedicated savings to put him in a really good position. 978 rights area fifty. Years old and so is my husband we have just over one million dollars in our world in case in diaries combine. How do we know if we have an after our a lot of it has to do with your lifestyle of a million bucks today. That means you spend about forty or 50000 dollars a year from those account may yeah forty maybe that would be mine. And the more aggressive path that tell less concerned about leaving an inherent. I have my kids have had plenty already. That's a good barometer though if if if you know if if your lifestyle requires a lot more that are generally fifty to remember she's yeah if their fifty. Greatly that that account if you get a million now yup my time or 65 that could be three or four million bucks absolutely think about this by then they're not gonna happen. Possibly a big car payment they might put the mortgage put aside. And don't forget to add on Social Security. My guess is between the two of them might have. 40000 dollars a year in Social Security by the she add the 40000 until like maybe 40000 and from now or 80000 bucks here's the big unknown. But health care. We have okay. It's not before but what you turn 65. And if you can have. Afford to get a bulletproof supplement I've that's what I built this like okay amid a Medicare premiums. Ian I'm getting a bulletproof supplement them if I can bludgeon that number an unprotected. Yeah well right as a unit owners you know. That's true that's that's the big yeah that's the big European assail never going in my life would never do it now you bet I could appreciate legged just. It used you have a stroke. And you see what happens and it got it at that level of savings they probably do need to be looking at something like in nursing home policy like an item he can't get I know. Yeah if I think at one. That. I'm fifty years old diamond I exercise a lot yeah but I've got a bad back you know and I can't get a policy Guam. You only policies gets old teacher at 60000. On bowl and used to be that happen. Blow because that their numbers the actuarial numbers didn't work out insurance companies noted that it is they lost the fortunes of the day in the continue to look at GE. If you look at the situation gee he's in today yup it's largely due to their long term care insurance office. Yet their their of their tail obligations are just massive but this guy is doing really well but I think the key thing as you so people ask us questions. What visual style right how many trips a year need to take what pepper Carty and time again. Yeah Boston's new luxury towers or or or did you did you marry your housekeeper. That's an acceptable but it. Didn't tell us something. If there's something to confess to her if there is a second guy I won't talk about marrying her housekeeper again even though. If we all married her housekeepers we would technically drive our GDP into a recession if your oldest and we Arnold Schwarzenegger the merrier. So. Yet the little I know where I was burials he's. You totally. I was ice saw the story about. The the luxury towers in Boston and holy smokes if you haven't been in the city of Boston in awhile you have to go it's worth the justice seat via the area like the courthouse or that they the big federal courthouse. I used to be the only thing it is surrounded by empty parking right right. Now it's all these luxury buildings the Vertex Pharmaceuticals headquarters is there and the luxury housing in Boston is really quite remarkable you see these condos go for two or three million now. I've I've got friends that have sold their house in the verbs and moved into the city but that's the record. But more people are looking to move into the city especially the high end the problem is they're competing for those units with foreigners and investors. Kind of troubled by this when I read the story that half of the units they believe that are in these luxury developments downtown. Are basically. Bought by investors. War by foreigners or by people or foreign investors don't want filed their tax returns in Massachusetts. See here's here's what. As I've been I've got a lot of friends that have said while gonna sell my house and Wellesley and a move into the city in the duke. But the only live there five months a year for months a year and guess what they're filed they're tax returns in war. Four or even New Hampshire or 48 anywhere yeah but Massachusetts right to avoid two things they're avoiding income tax in the avoiding the death both of which are prohibitively high in its worst ever in Massachusetts that some. Up next are we talking about iPhone prices just how much would they go up if they were manufactured. In the United States that's our next topic company to. Life goes on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter. Show breaking business news is always first right here on the financial exchange radio network. Are you having problems the blocked sink or drain. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today it until Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Feel like turn around to. Stay here we start out pretty bad and were coming back just a little bit joining us now Wall Street watch is Mike Armstrong and Mike after a sound or opening things are little green right now. There. I your particular company is that's our big concern biggest waste today so who knows which is based much speaker company bet that. Just went public. Barrier recently reported their first earnings and went a little bit of aid. Disappointment. Quite frankly based bigger company is down right now about sixteen and A half percent copper pair closed yesterday. Per loss supported by cents a share on revenue of 200 a mail in that. And that revenue fell 6% year over year first. No leadership you know not make profit which isn't all that. Uncommon for hey new word you know product company backed out revenue declining Europe you're but it turned. Now the stock you're looking at and of course today with that the bad news about the hurricane in the news. While talk about insurance companies and you are looking at travelers insurance. Yes and travelers actually slightly up this morning. But that's follows a pretty. Equipping decline of the last few days that since there's status talks stopped found that between Borg Warner half percentage estimated that. Our hurricane Florence could trigger between fifteen and twenty billion dollars and covered losses from where and coastal stores a bad storm surge etc. So it will not moving much to babe it's certainly have been centered volatility with travelers insurance and last you'd. And of course we should point out Mike as you know when you have an event like this on one hand insurance companies are writing big checks on the other hand. Markets looking ahead too much higher firmer rates which help buy insurance companies ultimately in the long term right. Very true and bath home improvement companies are actually seeing a little bit of bad bumps. Well the last week or so Home Depot and Lowe's has proceed Saturday likely. Need forests about repairs as well preparation for the storm. And Janet rack and a big move yesterday through beat a way to these things that either generator but it is though you know human behavior. Mike Armstrong thank government's report on Wall Street watched. You're right about generators and he can be wiped out for electricity yet that coasted core corolla make ago. Months people buying every generator that good and we see this happen time and then there you know in our salute reflect what meg gets not lost electricity last. And well you're but you're prepared whoever generator right I do it is ready. There are less about iphones yesterday chuck and I were trying to determine. What would happen to the price of an old. If also a new 25% tariffs on these goods that are coming in from China war if we decided to manufacture apple decided to manufacture. Iphones in the United States as the president it's just you know what to think about this because of the way forwards are financed. It feels like you know to keep raising the price in yet you don't really feel that because you're paying like over 24 months. Think of it this way it's 20%. Is what the estimate increase would be story top fifty and about 12100. For full. What 20% more media missed a 12100 dollar 15100 dollar for focus or thousand now look at the expense of would you bosses yeah that's the most expensive phone out there at this one is going to be sound bite that I like to reiterate. I'd be there yet it's like for 79 nights that B 960. That your first car. Now like 400 block. So I just wanted to put this in perspective that I bold I know John and I might first of 500 of fealty in my first motorcycles 450. The so it was. You know. And I it boggles my mind what we pay for yet it usable data is amazing amid a fact we've routinely pay 799. Dollars and perform. Not financed over 24 months generally. But 20% as edition and and Bank of America's analysts as saying. That they believe that there's a pretty decent chance that apple may in fact respond positively to the president's request to move some production. Some assembly of the iPhone to the united states of this could very well happen. Perspective what's it raises it a hundred bucks the other it's four dollars a month. 300 it's gonna be 252 under these old needle in it by what you would pay for yours. 78 under box yeah. We missed our preferred these things that owns the right they're great personal before devices apple and yeah that exactly it's a smaller iPad computer if tonight's out on it tonight gather makes phone calls a good point Tucker great great point but. On the hand the cynic in me says. While now apple. Can be saying with the release of their new products. You might want him tomorrow by tomorrow by the way they go out and get your iPhone right now I think from the for the 20% increase comes into effect its not our fault it's the president made us this sucks and arteries that kind of wondering yeah exactly as they work out to their benefit. As you near retirement age is very important make sure that your. State is in solid shape and if you listen to Todd lets these weekly show it's called the legal exchange you know he's an expert on elder life and estate planning. Forget the stock test was bonds. Are imploding test the stock all record actually did a downtrodden. Eight bucks. Guys this stock is up and down and it moves quickly because so many people shortly after cover whenever there's a the lot of reasons why the stock goes up and down. Basically though if you wanna keep an eye on how to Housley is doing. Don't fall the stockholders fault of the ball Arnold why. Because stockholders are buying into a dream. Bondholders. Want to get their money back and there are more conservative. They're more because they wanna get paid back him. So they're gonna lend money to Elon Musk if they think they're going to get at least their principal back and stockholders are buying into dreams of going to Mars and electric vehicles him. The Jetsons and you know thirty years from now but is that what you want should be the reason why people should be concerned about test was future. Is that they're born and due in seven years and that's not going out a whole lot of time. Would you buy a bond for seven years saying I think these guys can pay their bills for seven years and then I get my money and I I'm not a 100000 dollars for these bonds. They're gonna pay me 5% per year. For the seven years and then I get mine passed back and I'm in line ahead of every stockholder and the line ahead of Elon Musk to get paid. That person in that priority position who's investing simply to loan them money. Is getting eight point 6%. A year right now sort find certain. If I'm an investor. You know I've got a 100000 dollar to invest. I can buy Tesla bonds that mature or seven years out in getting guaranteed yield of eight point 6%. Guaranteed by Tesla. Correct now tests almost as a almost doubling your money right attest that goes out of business on SO well but you're you're in line for the assets ahead of all the investors that's why does that's telling you here. Yeah I do not just that applying common sense yeah that is telling me right and as a layman I'm sane. Why they pay me eight point six when GM would only paying the three. Because there's substantial risk you won't get your money back even though you were in line ahead of every one else that sounds like it jumped off. It is a jump on. And this is why. I think test whose future is in apparel and we get a lot of publicity about him smoking pot and Twitter twittering weird stuff but the end of the day you know I don't care. And but it'll still either hit it. But Ottawa's position is. If he smokes pot after pay us back because making lots of money we you know will win the money. The bottom line is Cohen and company and analysts last week said Tesla is in a cash. Crunch in the primary concern is your ability to generate cash which they're not doing. They're still burning cash. Now there are numbers say that you know next year whatever this is gonna just turn the very big way in but you know they may not get there. National Grid workers are still. I was gonna say they are on strike that's actually true and walked out. This is the union that went on they got locked out about three months ago. By National Grid. I can understand both sides of the day the trade here at National Grid. Is under pressure from stock old guys like you guys like me right right right are saying to National Grid we will not buy your stock. And what she get rid of that defined benefit pension plan that these 12100 union were percent. And that's the problem and the union is not taking this lying down no they're not they get 1250. United steelworkers members yeah. Who've been walked out of National Grid for three months now. So they're at a standstill right now and they're not giving in and I I don't know how this gets resolved in as we go into the winter months. This is gonna raise some issues if there isn't already massive issues alternate take is an accident. Worst right. And we're entering storms could produce right we're we're. Even under ideal circumstances a company like National Grid would be stressed to meet the demand of the consumers so. This bears watching I think beauties are working on the gas pipelines and just won me if they're not elect workers Wear these are guys that work in on the gas that. You know that people are returned in the hate on next month. We ya if not so I don't know how long these guys can hang in there get in 760 week yeah and a but it you don't have health insurance that so unless they're white has it right which in many cases is the case known action in many cases they're probably the wipes using bear. They could potentially switched to the wife's insurance but yet I mean bottom line is. This is really got to a point where something needs to be resolved after three months both sides lose it gets dangers gets fingers that's I think what people were absolutely. Up next will be joined by Joseph Henry from seeking alpha. Grab your pencil and paper we have to stocks coming up next on stock to. This is John Maroney had a couple companies in a very different. Or retail try to attract more consumed. We're dollars Estee Lauder and Dollar General Joseph Terry is with seeking alpha Joseph thanks for joining us. Are real good joke. Estee Lauder has enjoyed a lot of success in a very competitive landscape. What are they doing right do you like the stock. I do like to stock up on it or disclosure purposes. I think what they're doing right it they're there about 30% itself international and 15% at its current emerging market itself. This fiscal year that grocers recent fiscal year they did a billion in China for the first time and also that operate beauty company in Asia Pacific airport so they're really competitive in the travel retail they pretty much dominated that now. You know it and emerging markets the global middle class they keep growing and growing and they're traveling more that's the first thing he's beaten in water products. You're justified never realized that Estee Lauder is a fifty billion dollar company with 46000. Employees. Bigger than I thought it is partly advantage that they do provide a wide range of services I mean it. They've got what skin care makeup hair care products they did a pretty much everything. Yet it differently yes in cared make a company I think both those out for about 41% sales peaked at 82% with those two combined but. Yes they I think they like on the run under the radar view because they're actually controlled companies bill a lot of family owns 87%. The company's voting powers so. They're kind of date on. The kind of an under the radar I think that way you know a lot of people. Maybe not want it. Though with a company like that but they're there to pick and operate as an owner operators so I think that he did in and they they think for a long term outlooks on quarterly earnings a lot of these other companies. No they're not doing a lot of short term stuff is the result. The other big issue when you're dealing with a company is betting that a lot of growth from overseas particularly China issue where about tariffs now. I've not heard about make up tariffs I suppose maybe record company are you concerned about the you know deteriorating relations between United States and China and possibly not having access to. That high growth market. I think that's definitely over the concerned I think it's done it's a little too early to Melanie. There are. Is he doing really well China added that the first and made it it it doesn't fails so. Until it actually does numbers early in the one of those things that and it's out of out of your control. Simple eat an old. Estee water let's go to Dollar General now typically in boom times like this. Don't stores don't do so well people kind of move up market hostile or general to. I don't general session due to really get I think there on there have 49ers thirty years as partners in store sales growth so concert you know they're just. There's still positive that three point seven outscored I think he estimates. Outside during the Great Recession in this that the Dollar General has been lighter obviously. There is getting done you know I'm like as I wanna date on something else today announced it has. It in a down economy Dollar General that. There in the financial crisis they're called were 99 and a half percent. Did you trying to get in I'm. Like about it. You know do you suspect I remember in the old days it was always you know Wal-Mart vs the dollar stores the I won't wonder if Wal-Mart is stuck in a battle the Amazon right now in those two were gone back and forth meanwhile kind of a dollar stores sneaking in there. Grabbing a little bit of that low end market share in the that's part of what's going on here. I am I actually think that's exactly the Dollar General during the panic on the via fish were there others are efficient scenario they're kind of doing what Wal-Mart get their start out yup. And understand that Wal-Mart actually 2014 try to compete with them to get that midweek shopper yup. And they ended up having a close those stores and now you know forty that mountain that the Dollar General. Definite path competitor. Great points a wal mart's kind of moving up market you know jet dot com you know kind of go to a higher end. Meanwhile let's penalty even those dollar stores a little bit more of the space themselves great point. All right yeah. Thank you very much Joseph Terry of seeking alpha the stocks again Estee Lauder symbol EL. Dollar General symbol DGA. You know with that story speaks to John as you when you and I were kids. Sick way back when sixty to 65% of the American population was middle class. Write downs fifty. That has that's right that's absolutely so what you had is you've got more rich people yup we also have a lot more poor people that you had forty years. And that's it that's for poor people shop there if you're. If you're on Social Security disability if you're unemployed if you're which would eat your your broke for a variety of reasons right. You know shopping at wal your gold and Dollar General they take food stamps ya right me you know you've usury BT cards there and you know what. They rack up there's a lot of people as you said they have they have money to spend it may be on inexpensive products. But the other thing is there a lot of cities parts of sections of cities. That don't attract. Other retailers sold they're willing to go there and serve the underserved population and they know how to do and they know how to do it and you'll pay a price of properly there's certain items they make high margin of the ones that are very cheap. They can make it work and I do think that there's been a a situation where Wal-Mart has kind of moved away from that little bit I mean they still serve that market for a lot of time to seal Wal-Mart right next door to door to cede the dollar to Jack up or down the street is close Dollar General. Goes where Wal-Mart and rightly they wanna be calls coz they know they get the circles of the dollar stores you know we I think a lot of us were ready to bury them the dollar to it but based server and here's the other thing if you're doing this while in good times. Think how well do do in the next recession seat with a lot of middle income people moved down to the dollar store happens every time I think about how many people are retiring broke. Absolutely. And where they shop and the dollars will now go to Macy's and writing and or if it cannot go to target today they're not gonna talk as if you know go to TJ Maxx and dollars yup. Our eight markets are kind of a mixed bag Marino's Dow's up ten points haven't looked at whale all day it's up 91 cents a barrel. At 6845. We'll be back it's John Moody and very Armstrong. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange were here to talk to you. About the questions that you need to ask a potential financial advisor Mike there's a lot of different types of advisors out there. And one of the big questions that I think people really need to pay attention to. Oh for your client but they must in fact be in the client's best interests can be giving example of how a fiduciary approach may differ from someone who's just acting as a broker for client. Yeah absolutely so when you take the case of say a broker they have a slew of different investment options that they can use and let's say you're comparing two different mutual funds and they might both achieve the same objective. But one of them might pay the advisor 5% commission and one of them might pay the 3% commission. Under the circumstances the broker's fee no free to choose that 5% product because it pays him more. Whereas the fiduciary is going to be in a place where they must choose that product that is truly in the message their client and if they don't. Then they stand to face legal repercussions. The president's approval rating is I work despite glowing reviews on the economy we'll talk about it often talk about what that might need for the mid term elections. Income disparity. The US middle classes falling farther behind the wealthy this according to a pew research report and then. Do you have enough money saved for retirement hi everybody it's aryan John Moody with you here it's a Tuesday morning. And for the life of John and I I tip that well I can't remember the last time the economy was this strong. What does. 1999. And Bill Clinton was coming out of the scandal but he is very popular yeah it towards the end of his presidency. And edit the economy I think largely you have to credit the economy for his popular remember Jim corporal. Before there was tweeting he said he kept reminding the president it's the economy stupid yeah. And in fact it was the economy stupid. And ironically yesterday the president tweeted it's the economy stupid. He's always react reminding people what Carville told Clinton unfortunately it's not translating the same way. For president trump let's talk about that because Bill Clinton. You know lead at the time reprehensible behavior yeah right. Certainly work him and he knows what the president's being accused of very was impeached. And and yet his popularity he's very popular now the president today. He's in the thirties from its. 38% approval of some polls I've seen there are 36 and CNN 36 as high as 41 but the bigger number even. The one thing that's what really got my attention is. The other people who dislike the president that number is like 60%. And that he attributes to. Personally dislike him because the fact that matters when you ask about individual issues and ask what the economy people give very high grades to president is smartly turning this into let's talk about the economy because he knows. The people like the economy according to latest polls. People feel better about the economy right now that they have at any time since that period you referenced are back. In the 1990 when you agree Leahy here we knew I think I look at the economy and it does have a 1999. Field to the without the ball. It if there are bubbles there notables they're not accountable bulls that we had a real news night when you looked. He is being remembered hearing a company would get a lot clicks on the website Google forty dollars this year well I'm I had no revenue exact idol biased towards stocks and I had minimal stock exposure back in 1999 because. I was looking at each company cut. These prices are ridiculous so everybody got the feeling that while he'll only the businesses the great thing but we all dislike or overstated. In bid price is the moon shall we US stock market bubble and right now we have the generation of people who've been through 2008 and oh by the way before that. The Hud dot com plus it within ten years. It's we have a bunch of people were kind of shell shocked they're not going to build bid up stock prices to mobile crisis goes. They're suffering PT SD when it comes to investing in the stock market with these poll numbers he that the president happens. I guess you could argue maybe the polls are inaccurate but. Which what is this interpret to in terms of health results and senators well there's two very different numbers. People were very gets opinion about the economy a negative opinion of the president according to the polling. The Republicans should hold on to the senate part of the issue there is. There's just not many seats they need to defend. There are several that the Democrats have to defend in areas where the president did very well so. The landscape. Very much favors Republicans in the senate just the opposite in the house. Where if the Democrats. Simply weak in the states won districts won by Hillary Clinton. Which wouldn't seem to be a very high bar to pass and if they just do that. They will marginally in the house seat talking about dividing this government you get a grid correct. It ironically it's just like the last two years of Obama and except slipped. Instead of having the democratic president and a Republican House. We could end up having a Republican president. And they split house with an increase in the number of Democrats what this result I mean to an investor to investor this is generally very bullish. Divided government means less government it means less can be done. Investors generally like. Less rules less government smaller government. Even though it's big government ironically what has its hands tied behind its back. It becomes smaller government so that's positive I gifts from an investor's perspective and I guess if you're leaning towards being. Wanting Republican conservative policies what concerns me is that the Democrats can realize their gun control the podium potentially in the house. They're not going to be able get anything approved the archivists and it will reject it. In the pocket anywhere near a veto proof. Margin even if they win the senate by a Cedar Key right is that the supermajority so nothing will get done now and they will view the next two years as an opportunity simply. Dump on the president. And try to run against him the same way frankly Republicans took the last two years of Obama up and made it a let's open season criticized the president for every problem of groups though. You know what that translates to into 2020 because the big issue and that is my bigger concern right. Income disparity is our next topic US middle classes falling further behind the wealthy but the wealthy. Now represent. 19% of the American population that's up from 14% in 1971. To your point earlier. At least the middle class has stopped shrinking and that is very pleased to be about 6065%. Of our population. And it shrunk like crazy out to about fifty aren't yet it in a secular sense year after year to year. That trend to stop we'll see you end up with a lot more wealthy people yet. Lot more poor people like poor people represent what about 29%. Of the population depending on how you identify them I mean that's probably a good idea while under 45000 OK so household income. So from 20/20 ten to 2016 inflation adjusted I thought this was interest and we actually opened better now the middle class did 6% better and that's depletion adjusted so we say oh yeah oral fought to. Actually doing better than the upper income though did 9% better. And I think that's simply a function of the fact that. If you can own a hundred shares of FaceBook I can on 400 shares equipment and make more money. I mean when you have more wealth to impound. You're gonna grow and become a journalist spent so much money in the and you and the best in the arrest and they're in a great economy to people who have the largest stakes do the most. And they also pay largest tax bills by the way I didn't write. A little longer and I think that their payroll taxes but they're also getting a large chunk of the game but the good news is I thought. For that six year period inflation adjusted the middle class did 6% better good Trent all right. Fox Business reporting the retirement savings crisis Americans are not confident that they can save enough money 37%. Of people are not confident. They will be able to stash enough cash away. Compared to 32%. Who think they will be able to stash of cash way we have actually poll question that very topic today. And one hour indoor pole 29%. Of our listeners think that they half or excuse me 32%. Think they will have more have enough money saved for retirement 67%. Saying now. 67 saying no we we we need to give some good advice to worthless Alley got to help make this happen that's our job that's our job. EEU. You know one thing that's changed in retirement. Since you know or course is it maybe your listeners have more realistic view and cost that's probably the reason why. Well anyway and they might be forty years old saint on the line I'm not now but I will and their conservative right. The that's the thing to to keep in mind news. You know all these numbers were talking about income disparity. You know while the richer in the pork and pork. That's without the pensions situation fully baked and there's still a lot of people that are receiving pensions for companies like IB MG yet ITT rate that is retired workers that defined benefit the old rate they're dying. Right literally. By the day those workers are dying. They're gonna go away and basically in the she worked for the government rate if you work as a police officer teacher firefighter yet you're gonna get mentioned in active Social Security correct. You're you're relying on your 41 K. And what's happening is it's great that people have the power if you do choose their investments. But we're finding out that people are reading that account in very large numbers for understandable justifiable reasons like health care costs like college education costs and I read something else even more disturbing Terry. We all bought at least I thought it was a really good thing to have automatic enrollment. In 41 case the urge you get a job. We're gonna put you with 4% of your pay unless you tell us otherwise that's the automatic job at least easily see if the match you know. Here's the really disturbing fact I just read that. The number of people who rate the were counts early like quadruples. Among the auto enroll group. No worse your forcing me to be and it. I'll be unit and to have a chance to pick my money out that it's very in again it was a well intentioned rule. But people like OK if you can force them taken out and and so yeah there's a lot of reasons to be concerned about the ability of future generations or. Our generation we get to retirement age. To dilute one's retirement well and to that end in the next segment will be joined by any means holes ports from duke university's talked about. How much money. Will you really spend in retirement. Probably a lot more than you think that's the name of the article that was in the Wall Street Journal wells about a week ago will be talking to her next on the financial exchange. First I believe our thoughts and prayers are with everyone at duke and all over the Carolinas with the spending hurricane it looks like a doozy and and I hope everything works fine if you guys. I'm thinking that might not advance without went right around eight and so. And trying that they are that while it. Yet they are the proverbial calm before the storm retirement and back yeah. I I don't need expensive wardrobe I don't need work related expenses. Why am I retirement estimates too low. Yeah. Oh basically and Ariel in it where. A lot about what we should be saving for retirement and that 70%. Number kept coming out and we are wondering where does that it was in conference and what it. What is the percentage. We're a compartment or it. It turned out with a little bit of read there we realized that. The number and what people are actually ending in retirement if not what they want it bad and the other bad things that are. Future future lies be. But of course. There had not occur quite out yet and what you don't have so if you need more than what you near the start too late. But turned up that is not really a great ways that people old war. There are saving and retirement. So we can interpret the more systematically. And we asked about it all and all currency is it. Read it and all the different demographic from our US. We asked them how they want it and the crime what we're currently in their money when they retire. And then we items we went right back on and but I wanna go there. And baseball game here we are on the right is being out ticket but I'd I added that aren't. And basically when we attacked all of these prices at the different things that people. Wanted the cricket retirement how they wanted to spend their lives we found out they need a whole lot more than that. We found that they needed about a hundred and buried at an average. Oh the pretty striking bit. Hopefully open the baseball fans want to go to Durham bulls games not the Boston Red Sox game I guess second make your time it's at least lies last longer. Is there. Which expense though is the surprised the big surprise to retirees like they get there it's like wow I demoralized and be that much. Well now one thing that I mean we Wear overly optimistic about is the right. A health care and the number one that they are seen in the US is helped here and there so. We started our that being healthy battle and we don't imagine that in the future. We're gonna get sick or something and it didn't happen and note that. They adopt than. Huge. Expenses and our future. Do retirees underestimate how much the group in need for entertainment travel this. You know one thing is it's par for the relate to just how much downtime that going to hand out. When they pull back you know what I have a go to work like the good thing is not to go to work. Things not to do it today that they get it if they go on and realize but wanna do more stuff than I thought. Exactly yeah so 11 event. Realization that we can't do that and suddenly you're not working anymore every bit as we as you know all of that I'm under. And what you gonna do that while. It really need then find a lot more opportunities to spend money that you had before when your partner. And what you're getting paid by your you're not really spending money doing it. Then. So is there an age group that seems most out of touch with perspective. Guessing what it's gonna cost us in retirement. But the big question how to what I typically. Most of us are due but I'd just curious you. That's true then we are. What. We'll. So I think we're equally. People on here. Any. Any of them one bit of advice based on what you what you learned. Yeah. I. The most important and believe me but I think we're just thinking about. Baby Little Rock entirely I think we need to revisit how we think about they'd be able to completely. Look at leaving open the way that we are actual right there right now it's the add factly that we're putting our body of what you know. Where we're putting it lightly not really it actually didn't work eat yours we're. Leaving it to you are spending a Georgia thing I want to bite you the other things in the future at the I wanna buy it now. And I think that's really. Up your way and your way to think about. Savings could realized that it exactly where the one report of that money. All of visualize myself in the stands watching the durables. And how much fun little bay. I mean holes were from Duke University again. Stay safe. This that you're gonna get a ton of rain down there and don't take chances it's going to be it's going to be awful but I wish you the very best. Oh. Labels from computers park your car I absolutely because that's what catcher in these things the flooding kills more than anything else by far. And it catches up when a flash flooding happened in the moment. You know you're talking about retirement John was mean indeed the finger remembers. Very rarely. Professional athletes that same thing goes for our well your business newscaster Maria how many news guys eat John if you don't know was it news anchor major markets across the country. News guys get to go out of their terms very few right I think Walter Cronkite the last. But just that the problems. You know your your fifty years old your 59 years old and you see yourself. Well if I can make it to 67 because that's my retirement age before right rebuilding takes it to 67 at the employers find a reason to get rid of at 62 in that would lead with three years on yeah I didn't budget. For pain 25 grand a year for health insurance as a sort costs that's a great which was not only just visualizing the benefits of retirement but it's understanding that it may come at a time you don't think it always comes in. That's what I tell that night my advice to solace under the gun sought so many times back in 2008. Where guys are coming in and they say. Gee I'm 63 lost you know 60% of my money in the market. And if you're making a lot of money at the whale respond about what didn't matter. Yet and in like OK I get the job I know for half that we like 63. It's really really hard so keep that in mind you know planning ahead. And and expect. Expect the worst and hope for the best. The suicide rate in the United States has increased by 30%. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange were here to talk about some of the questions that you need to make sure you ask a financial advisor if you're considering hiring one and Mike what are the big questions that I think everyone needs to pay attention to is to actually making the investment decisions when it comes to what goes in the client's portfolio what what. What types of different situations and be seen as far as who makes the investment choices in portfolios for. It's taken very significantly mean everything from TO a small independent advisors action running all those portfolios and investments themselves to completely hiring that entire piece of the business out to a third party why it's important that you understand which one is happening is because you want to make sure a the person that's making the investment decisions has the qualifications needed to do so. Understands the markets maybe has a chartered financial analyst on staff and B if they're not doing it themselves are there any additional costs to using a third party for the service lets talk about that second piece of particular how much additional cost you end up running into if they're outsourcing that management uh oh well I mean I I've seen numbers as high as another full percentage point if not more you know in the case where say you're paying your advisor 1%. And they using a third party money manager you might be layering on an additional 1% cost mainly doubling the cost of investing for. Folks the question of who makes the investment decisions in a client portfolios just one of the questions you need to ask a potential advisor and our strong advisory group has put together a list of the top ten questions that you need to ask a potential advisor all you have to do to get it is call 800. 3934001. Larry chuck in the financial exchange on FaceBook FaceBook dot com slash the financial exchange this is the financial exchange radio network. I read it disturbing report out of the CDC as a relates to suicide rates the suicide rate John in the United States jumped 30%. Between the years 202016. The rise was especially dramatic among young girls from the ages of ten to fourteen. But it went up for females in every age group and for all men under 75. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for all Americans each ten to 34. And again. Even while. It's always disturbing amount of the demographic but I thought it was curious that it's especially dramatic among young girls from ten to fourteen him. On when women the rates up 50% John. I you know this is a mental health crisis. And when you're dealing with mental health it's it's difficult to analyze Smith has the CDC says right there they. Be just you can't press a button and say it's because of this current you know it's a complex illness. What strikes me is it's not like mental health illnesses just struck in 2008 and and stock with us like it's always been here. And it's not it's been under reported we know the people of committed suicide I mean. It's on the rise were and there are myriad of reasons why. My old anecdotal. Thoughts and on on the situation with young girls you know. Is I believe that social media. Is a contributor to spend big to destruct system because it makes young people feel inadequate in Italy and police believe is a my phone's ringing since. Chris Douglas sidebar. There else. The biggest thing you still haven't. So John I'd like to know that somebody is is as technically. Inept as I you know it's the I I'd muted my phone. But it's connected to America I know so and I'm using my iPad so I don't remember a and my iPad two that turn off a tip about the gruesome series here and in that as I. I really believe that the social pressure that comes and and chuck is as mentioned this to him. People present this unrealistic world where all they do a show they're happy moments you know their vacations. They're wonderful family gatherings were and probably in reality is that the Stanley Campillo each other but they pose for nice picture. And you know. Young girls ten to fourteen look at this mythic. My feelings not that nice now I don't have closed like that she I can afford take a vacation to Jamaica. On. And I think that this leaves to feelings of inadequacies 120 Americans suffer from depression on any given day. While that's a huge number I didn't know if they eat your news if you don't have it in your beauty and you're not aware of it's is there. Yeah and and how much I I believe that's one of the most undiagnosed. A syndrome or illnesses that exist because there's a lot of depressed people who don't chew up those numbers and they're like there's something in their life that's wrong. They don't know what he is while they go on the Madson in the loft and it's because it'll likely in the yellow because the Mets have downsides sure I need to keep that. But thank you bet but they'll also you know. One thing about a lot of medications for depression is they will take away the downside but they can't take away the upside they cut. Put to a level you know leveling in between period that people find like you know I kind of enjoyed being happy and jovial. And now I just feel on either side of the middle so. Yet it's a problem I think it's multifaceted that really difficult part is it's very hard look at some to pinpoint any one reason why. Hope you know play him and I've been helping families just like yours with their investment strategy for the last thirty plus years. In what the you're working with my team or another advisor a wanna give you some free advice. Finding the right financial advisor is not easy. So Tucker how do you you communicate that if you're talking to a by the about you you meet somebody for dinner not do you call them on the full text text and have you John you're an old fart like me. Mix I would say tech's most of the time button but phone call sometimes to my wife is a big call. He wants to call them it's actually do it honey her. She wants to in fact I I I creditor for what teenagers prefer to chat. As opposed to talking in person. Human interaction here I think gives you some you know I wonder there's a connection here between the issues we dealt with them last story and this story. In this case we're finding out that more than two thirds of all teams would rather communicate with their friends on line. Then in person and think about this Berry. Reno that depression is an epidemic in a problem among the elderly. And we know one of the leading causes of that depression is isolation. It's not voluntary isolation and a lot of that isolation comes from hearing loss from hearing loss loss of spouse most of the only minority your wife dies in your ramble around that house all by yourself and your word we your reward for living a very long life is your loan. And that causes depression. The what's happening on the opposite end of the spectrum teenager teenagers generation sees their voluntarily. Isolating themselves. They would rather communicate via a text that have a conversation. That to me I mean we're trying to find out why either I'm wondering if it's just teenagers because I sealed lot of people texting. But nothing it's everybody can no question but the numbers gone from people who talk face to face among young people. It's gone from 49%. Almost half six years ago to 32%. To pay indirectly for six years I just think about kids rate me like I wasted. Coach hockey. And chatter in the locker room was just not stop or you can as a coach trying to get the attention these kids. Pre pubescent kids and try to teach how to play hockey. And aid yet yet. What are vet now they just text each. Better I don't coach kids and I think in the locker room at might be a better if they are close enough to probably be able to communicate. Verbally rather than give an eyeballs been a big advocate of sports. Yeah I'd ever had that kids were great athletes but they all participated. And I I think that's a I think the value. In athletics you're gonna get it to you I do almost without yeah yeah plate right. Date exception golf. But you're if you're a tennis player and your soccer player football player basketball player. Yet you're gonna get physically fit. I think the big. It is the social interaction and what do you learn life's lessons can all be learned in locker. But now that their protection don't need to know that right I mean look if it's a sad commentary that I I agree and bottom line is either I totally agree but in an even more basic sense of human interaction will make you feel better regardless of your age. Elderly people are being forced in many cases involuntarily. To not be it would have human interaction is much that like. People are choosing. Not to have interaction that's not a good decision. Correlation between overconfidence and economic confidence and stock market sell offs high. You know by we are referencing earlier how great the economy was in 1999. And then after 9/11 actually they're big correction started in. Spring of 2000 call volume and it lasted until march of 2003 year correction it was and it is hip high flyers the most. I think is a little bit of a correlation between that market in this we're too confident world competent. In a relatively small number stocks. And everybody is of the opinion right now that they gravitate to the fame deal which are high growth very loved companies that they just. Build this prices to the moon. The people continue to use FaceBook and Amazon and Google which they will. The problem is we end up doing the prices too high. And this is exactly what happened 2000. Cisco Systems has done great but people vastly overpaid for that growth because they thought it would do even greater for ever. And you know bad times occasionally hit and you can overpay. It's there were cycles markets look ahead. The next recession might happen in two years and it might happen in three years it might happen at four years at some time though it will happen. And it's important remember that markets will not wait till they ring a bell may say aha this recession is here or sell your stock. They will begin to discount that. Quite a bit in advance of the recession so keep that in mind when times are really this good. And we get this far into recovery if it's the last what longer. But you kind of have to look towards when the party will wind down you know somebody asked me over the weekend and they said in the bury what happens. If the Republicans lose the house in the sent market goes down a lot. I mean I I'm I'm unwilling to make a lot of predictions. And I think right now baked in the cake is that. There's a split. I I do not think the market will react whatsoever. If the Democrats were in the house and Republicans get the senate I think that's common not that's a 70% odds if something happens at 70% odds via. It's not a surprise. That will be huge huge setback because here's what happened Berry. We thought that the tax cuts for businesses were permanent rate. We may learn that they are not permanent. We thought the tax cuts for individuals. We're gonna last for another two and world the 2020s. Might not happen they're economic reasons why and that would be very negative from a investment perspective.
