And me. This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The bull market. Is raging on and the question is will we set a record for the longest bull market in history when you look back at the year in 1950. For us to talk about tariffs we've got good news as it relates to tariffs that we also have some bad news. Hi everybody it's very John Mooney with you here it's a Tuesday morning in some of a gun John I think we're kind of probably break a record. We the record for longest all are and I I guess. You don't if I I think we are we should tell everybody with the background is to the story but it feels to me like we're in it. With eight more days we will reach the record for the longest bull market in history looks like we're probably gonna do that the the right thing is though. We're not gonna know we set a record. For awhile. Unless between now and and we end up going to war all all time high which read in January which is quite a bit higher up a couple of percent higher in the absentee. So. And then we'll find out who will take a year later final always were you guys partner in the bull market you're six months that will bear Maher yet you're sliding into the bear Markey just to note the time but at that the fact of the matter is August 22 as the day we'll set the record for the longest bull market. It in a bit this part of it makes me nervous because you know bull markets don't last forever than the size though and in this chuck and I talked about. We had a nineteen point 5% correction. Which is a half a percent short by about 2011 yet. I know I and I adds that's what I was gonna bring up Isaiah came will technically we haven't had to bear market. It. That nineteen point five to persist when he meets. Yeah differences negligible so we went a half a percent down that means we be only in the eighth year global market on top of that. A couple other pretty substantial corrections including wanna believe. In 2015 which is around 16%. Again down 10% as a correction 20% as a bear market. In between is kind of in between land and we've had a couple of really nasty. Deep correction sounds like your Republican for 30%. He EU EU wants them deep and all yet just think if the I agree. I like that the bear markets is what it does yeah separates the the men from the bullies you know and you see the people pay anything I've you know. The worst when I lived through 20082009. But it wasn't the first one and right through the through 1987. Through 2001. After 9/11. And you know each time. Eats eat each one of those corrections and I consider those to be oddities bear markets during our lifetime note yup. You learn. You actually do and you know it's very easy to look at the last nine years in particular state averages following money index fund let me making a fortune. It's easy to do that retrospect. The separating the men from the boys happens in bear markets. Because bear market town and it's what you do when that time that determines how well you gonna be positioned the next bull market. Eons. Argued it will survive the market you know we're just a lot of people didn't last time well in the didn't and I understand why because. If you're re. A bear market when you're working and you have earned income you know in your gainfully employed and you say okay. It's 1987. I still have a job it's 9/11 I still haven't its 2008 still have a job. You retire in 2000 mentioned he'd feel if you'd retired in 2007. And then all of a sudden happier money disappears in 2000 and and that's why you know related to that it's so important for people have a certain amount of money in absolutely totally liquid. Assets because no matter how well your prepared mean if you have the ability to fund yourself out of cash for a year for eighteen months or longer and longer. I generally tell people say is hey we we try to do kind of like. 68 year buffer yup because that way if you will mean even the bad market 2008 it was on its way back by. Started coming back in nine I think wistfully back in beetle and you know is so yeah yeah yeah had a terrible through for you your time. We had six years worth the safe money invested in your portfolio are not happy we were and calls and people were complaining almost there. But you know he came and and people need to understand most important psychology of the market understand is that bear markets. Our quick and violent but the key thing is they're quick they generally last less than two years in a generally a year and a half to two years. But they're pretty violent you know that means that the next one's going to be like five years you just curse us. And you know what both of the worst ones that was one in the seventies I believe was. Just EE eight you were part every day it was like the Dow well I don't thirties yet. And the Dow was down twenty points that they elect that you're never panic any and one day but you're likely never making any money and that's the killer but we'll joke put back in the seventies once the EU wanted to how to make a small fortune. Invest a large ones. Canada back. I remember Hillary I've remembered as yesterday wore brokers quit their jobs or lost clients left and right and nobody made any money and everybody lost a little bit over a long period of time but the thing is that is exception. Generally the way human nature is people panic based sell stocks go down hard and fast and quick and their recover slowly but quickly and that's that is between greed and fear some of the richest people in the world made their money in the seventies. All no question it warmed up. I mean the EU you look at the Genesis of his while in a win it really began in earnest this in the seventies because he found so many opportunities and people were willing to give him. It they would give him money he's able to invest White Plains, New York. And you know what when would stock prices are that cheap and the dividends alone provided tremendous income and you can of the you can educate you needed to you can make 6% income. Ian own cheap assets that over time will collapse so it's nice to have liquidity and cash with stuff that's cheap. Let's talk about terrorists. You know most of the news on tariffs has been negative understandably so the you know we've been trained. You know piece about finance guys in his radio and everything we've Wheeler is tariffs bad. Taxes that he had government bad. But we've gained one point four billion dollars in tariffs from steel and aluminum imports that's that's a good we forget there's that there's an economic benefit and that is money comes in one point four billion dollars as you said so for a Nash is between march 23 in July 16. That cash register is a rung up even more money since the sixteenth of July on top of that. It's estimated that could reach seven and a half billion dollars this year based on last year helps the deficit. Yeah helps the military spending bubble bubble but soda taxes. I mean you know if you raise taxes like you gonna bring in a lot more revenues to the argument here is you know do you want free enterprise to do its thing in for and provide. Prosperity in the private market cents forty wanna bring in more money and Corey more money for government while I guess when you an era of big deficits as were in. It is nice to get them some extra money and you know one point four billion so for steel lenders. Is certainly the positive side that's the good news right. Now the bad news consumer prices if you look at carrier air conditioning and their floor. The error of their products are going up in price by 3% now. The CEO Greg case very careful not to say well because it tariffs and he's afraid of the but he did come out and say. At all costs. Fifth and the fact of the matter is you know you're making air conditioners your co dependent on steel and movement as it no mention of the terror specifically but that you wouldn't dare you can do on end up like Carly David Wright. You can do the math though 3% hike. It was United Technologies a new one or fifteen million dollar UT center for intelligent buildings in Palm Beach Gardens. This includes UTC climate controls and security and the brands carrier borrowing pain. ICP brand names but a lot of one product and it'll be implemented effective September 10. I hear anecdotally people are finally. Viewing higher prices. Item its timing couldn't be worse and might be naive to say oh yeah you just notice people in those higher prices. The people who like. I'm finding. People fanning horrid to make ends meet. Because the cost of basic things and things they wanna buy in seems a lot higher or projects being deferred right I talked to contractors and they say. You know they thought they were gonna get this job and then when they quoted the price. The didn't get the work because the consumer just couldn't afford fifty grand to reduce the kitchen. You know B and and the contractor saying well look my labors up in price. I need my fuel is up in price in Costa materials. You wanna buy still wanna buy an open dishwasher all that's that's going up and price in this all feeds upon itself and I read an article saying that a lot of labor a lot of you know working class people. Who've gotten nice pig races this year are complaining that they're not seeing the benefit. And the way this becomes a vicious cycle is. You get a pay raise used to find you can't afford the higher prices you'd need a bigger players in an a in a tight labor market. You might have the new power to you go to your boss and get even more money which is the cost of the Boston it's not steal workers go on yet. Ten bucks for exactly. It and this is how these are the seeds of inflation that they're watching we'll keep an the our poll question today has to do with you on months and we're giving more and more information as it relates to Tesla. And Ilan mosque. Talk early you put the question now but then John and I should talk a little bit about the background deaths so a lot of question of the day a financial change show doc on his do you think Elon Musk had. Funding secured and we're talking about in reference to. But. Boy. He's not a dubbed a lot of people called when playing man died I. I gotta tell you I respect this guy. I think he's it's. A genius. But I wonder he didn't go off the rails I think ease he's an impulsive human being. And that really hurt him it's what the downsides of you know our our top elected official yeah. What you like it or not there's an impulsive side of that but I think sometimes that at times he may try to make statements that he doesn't like if I in reckless. Yeah like wind and a tweet that well I think Elon Musk has those moments quite frequently. And his comment about. The search Robert. The kids who were stuck and yeah if it. Calling one of the guys that had a file right I mean that was impulsive and stupid as a really G ingenious guys. But he makes very impulsive dumb song. What's your I I with all the data that you looked at all the stuff you read you know because. You know he's he tweeted last night odd guy I've worked with so overly soberly comes out and you know elect and in and Goldman Sachs. And it was gonna trust Goldman Sachs and right now he would like to give goal Goldman Sachs could come out and say water is wet direct the sky is blue oil's going into today is Tuesday and I would believe it I did just that I would check all three of those back I I know you're not the head of the Goldman Sachs and while we're out there that we can stomach it I mean they just they're terrible people. But title company that gets your question I don't think he had. Financing secured I think he talked to some Saudi officials is that you know we might get used to investing in your company. Buying a 10% at 1% meat even larger stake I don't doubt that. But I mean he crossed the bridge from yeah there's a lot of interest to. Financing or did did he cross the bridge that that's the whole question. If if he was real the pumping the stock in he has a lot of motivation pup the stock based on convertible bonds than in order a blowout shorts and well I think that's his number one thing I think John King sits if it's those bonds that are issues he can a lot of dead there and uncivilized and if he doesn't have the stock price at a certain. Level he gets hurt so. I think I just to. And he's having trouble raising going you know I think the whole grueling miles an hour just smells its stinks that something's up. I don't know why I hate to Tweety put out its a lot of publicity ya for the wrong reasons. I am and we're finding that you know they want it that there's nothing I mean you eat the maybe the the saudis. ECI I don't think I think the saudis could come out saying I don't be surprised if next week Auburn next month. The saudis about say yeah we yeah actually it's news but he's accountable to abort abort knows nothing about this that the board is saying. We need to start a committee to look at this I mean this is ridiculous. In the board is his us. Yeah that's right. Yeah but how much of the company to heal up up the 30%. He's the most you know I hate it it's not like he did something like Papa Joseph. Right this is a guy is not he he's not Steve win or you think about CEOs have been thrown out right right. For behavioral issues. The saudis could bail him out in a heartbeat and the saudis Arkansas on the on the river casino in a big chunk of the parent company they want that stock to be for Tony as well. I think what he did it was a lot worse well puppet Johnston. You're US CEO who made a third person reference to the N word talk about some analysis saying that person. Referred to of this as van that was just sent them this guy. What that we out which is basically a statement saying we've got to deal with 440 dollars a share everybody bought the stock the stock went up 45%. If that's not correct that is criminal. Yes yes John it is it is or injury well if they can prove it. And and I don't think they can correct yeah I I I don't think they have because I don't think the saudis that role. I think the saudis who bailed. They very well there. That's our poll but fear the question is they will likely and that will be futuristic thing I think that's a possibility but I don't think represents what he tweeted UB did you you can vote in our poll its financial exchange showed up on. Where he slipped do you think you on mosque at funding secured 33% of listeners think that he did. The army didn't our text number 63566. Should be cared chime in. And we're here to talk about a brand new product available for landlords it's called Z deposit dot net Jake. What. Barry we created a security deposit product. To really help the problem a lot of blame border facing with security deposits which is. You know one it's time consuming to open the small enough security upon cumbersome. And yet to go into the branch gets signed paperwork and their small dollars and in the turn. In exactly the complaints in Massachusetts really tough for landlords and security deposit accounts. You have to give them ten in certain forms when they open up the count and you have to pay interest a new and we should do all this canal through Z deposit all of that you can do Thursday deposit it literally takes about forty seconds to open up an account. We handled the automatic forms that are generated the account number department commission statement all that said lieutenant. And the interest dissent that tenant. Automatically every year. This sounds like something it's going to be very valuable to large landlords it might have 200 tenants and small landlords that might only have five tenths yeah absolutely with a large landlords. It's just a lot of hassle to manage it's that we make dad very efficient for the small landlords a lot of them are afraid of nineteen complaints done correctly so some of them. Some of them don't even like taking security deposits were hopeful that this will help them do that. Folks if he'd like to learn more about C deposit go to their website Z deposit dot net. And MLS number 449250. So John I've been waiting for the wheels come off of Home Depot and lol you are probably the and a six quarter. In night I base my pessimism. On online sales guys that you guys like me are buying stuff on line and not from Home Depot not from Loews dot com. And they continue to grow sales yeah stores I I just think that's very incremental on the margin I think this is one thing that is relatively Amazon prove and they have their own on line pro war that's the kiss of death how many times and I heard that. Nothing is Amazon. Okay well be but by The Home Depot did have a great quarter maybe maybe some of the stuff was sandbag because of concerns you mentioned. But it's always relative to expectations and they beat. The earnings estimate by 21 cents the revenue beat. I was impressed same store sales up 8% in the United States that judges gangbusters right that they could have been forgiven on earnings right. If the use just that same stores folks when your restaurant chain retail operation. Same story you live and yeah I seen stores that's an indication of your management team in the exe cutie. Is your pricing model accurate it's the truth if it's ultimately you know you could see revenue growth rate like that. But it could be because they opened forty new stores are right they're doing it seems stores which I fine buying ball well there's there's a million EEF so many choices toll. You either don't yet home people who's written a story to other. Lows will report would have more Sunnis if it or not tomorrow certainly Thursday. For them to grow same stores by 8% 88 there veered defying gravity. And and nom wrong I I because I didn't think they'd be to continue that trend yet you know there eight you're actually right there's a lot of competition but the fact of the matter is that for the bulk of the business Home Depot and Lowe's. Are kind of the duopoly. It what they do in terms of the big box and having everything right there under one roof and having low prices. The average sales ticket was up 5% to 66 box so people going in their buying bigger items. One little cabbie gotta put to me BJ explain some of this is that. The early summer was fantastic as you know around here in New England the early summer was great. And as we had a bad spring the spring was that that help that help the comparison so we went from bad spurring him to a very good early summer show. It kind of hurt the last quarter. And help the beginning of this quarter so that's something at the margin than that that we need to cut but still even given that these are these are great numbers by Home Depot and the fact of the matter is look if you. People say that a concern that the the activity in the housing market which has been kind of not as robust as we Lindsay that's hurt but the fact is if you stay put. You'll gonna spend a lot of money to upgrade and improve in maintains they make money there. And they also make money on the on the construction side with people buying new homes surely do what we're doing this so long and correction of that day at some point you have to fix that roof. Dow is up 62 points we will get a full market update in just a few minutes from Michael Armstrong that's next. Life goes on FaceBook and followers on Twitter. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. And we're off to a pretty good start on Wall Street joining us now with Wall Street watches check on the markets is Mike Armstrong and Mikey get a couple stocks that couldn't be much different put. Tapestry in advanced auto parts. Yes captured fashion company asked formally known as coach Adrian the coach Brad keeps cadence to weitzman. Reported earnings this morning fourth quarter profit of sixty cent a share which is above best net. Revenue topped forecasts as well coaches sales rose 2%. And K State's sales had client name but there it comp sales ride was actually. Little bit better and expected to decline but not as fast that it has paid and so on all that news stocks have nearly 12%. What are the business of ports. So quarterly profit came in at about 97 per share which was eleven cents above estimates revenue again above estimates as well. Can't scales up two point 8%. Pay increase their outlook which like most important piece here. New 600 million dollar buyback program as well so that stock up right now over 10% of its. And the stock market a kind of a quiet open but nicely to the upside. Yeah we're we're up right now on the Dow about 75 points S&P about twelve and a quarter and the NASDAQ up. 40% so about two thirds have one half of 1% across port. Not that does add up Mike are strong thanks very much when you watch. Cape Wind is dead vineyard with it and is very much alive due to primarily sounds like technological. Improvements boil tidy and cost cutting and really keeping a lid on expenses is no doubt about that. Vineyard winds plans to charge 14. Of what deep water wins block island projects charging him. In this project that it's lated to begin I believe next year. With construction at that time. And their big selling point has been cheaper prices they're able to deliver product at a much cheaper price. And they're very well known for keeping a lid on expenses overall they're using. GE turbines them and their much bigger than would keep in with views and that's how they're able it. Cape Wind was using three point six megawatt turbines. I GE has recently announced plans to make twelve megawatt turbines yeah great great news on the expense side in the shape it's it's hard to predict what this is gonna mean for the consumers in the door for a listing gong caught. In the bill Portland their part in our pockets but done. It's hard to translate what that will mean in terms of electric bills for homeowners because the wholesale power markets fluctuate a lot over time so. Again all you can control of your costs and they're a lot less with the project will be starting next year you know the he there's less opposition. As well they're not fighting as much if they yup it's an issue with fisherman. But it's it's on the other side of Martha's Vineyard. Nobody can see it. That's the big issue this is going to be a lot farther offshore in the ironic thing is the turbines are actually quite a bit larger but their so far out that visually. It's not as big an issue. Should dead yet it it's some good news all around you know they're and if you go to Europe you see wind farms and yet. Yeah yeah I think they're just especially in Northern Europe are up on the coast yet in Germany there every you just don't wanna put it near Ted Kennedy's summer home that's for as long as you don't do that. Ending the twelve day strike and they voted to ratify the new contract with the sheet metal workers in air conditioning contractors national association. You do a big deal is they wanted more money. If they are working Sundays over ten hours a day and it sounds like a pretty good deal rumor is it's around a hundred dollars an hour total including wages and benefits. That's it it's tough work. They are and every penny of it at but you know there are a good position right now in terms negotiating they were able to get what is appears to be a pretty good deal 14100 workers and actually does the cost. Exactly passed on the evening about the EC that Wynn casino project we have reduced the casino. Would it changed there's the ever casino and it's an all chances came about it that I'll look at it ever. You remember them but it's it's not call that it is not called the win to sign a good golly I'm corps ball on armor yet yet. On core Boston Harbor well anyway it just the you know what what is things that you use jeopardize or you risk. When you raise wages to that degree. Unaffiliated hi everybody it's Berrian Todd with you here with a quick tip from the legal exchange showed doc common. Todd I wanted to talk to you about the five year waiting period for Medicaid eligibility. As it applies to the use of the medic and a light the state so let's say I Cree I give by house away. I give it to the kids. Does that five year clock start ticking if I'd done elect the state yes so if you take your house and many people do this if you take in your house and transferred to the children. And reserve the right to live there you know does that create a five year Medicaid out absolutely it and that's the definition of elect's right giving your stuff away. Give it away but you you do reserve that right to live there so that's at least something that you're keeping which which is certainly helpful to you post to pay the property taxes and maintain the property. The property taxes and maintaining it is all done by the lifetime and it you know. But I I want to stay on the five year waiting period just for minute because so many people think that it doesn't apply either to the life estate arrangement like you mentioned very. And also too when they may get you hear people I can give 141000 dollars a year away because I I can do that and not pay any gift taxes. That's true. That's an IRS regulation. You'll pay any gift taxes but you will have a five year waiting period for Medicaid eligibility so it does apply to almost all transfer some. Including. A life of state arrangement. So yes it does apply. Folks Cushing and all and is making a brand new guide available and it's very helpful for those of you who are thinking about giving your house solely use like the state compares the advantages and disadvantages. B. Mass master license number ones you're 183. We're dialing up a legendary Telecom stock in the stock doc today AT&T. Joining us is Dave Clark from seeking alpha day thanks for joining us. Big thanks very it's great being here. Exits John with bare hand but if Barry did point out and I assume he's talking about 182 year that if you look for dividends stock. They don't come much better than this in terms of the yield. Well you know that's that's an interest being point you have there the last time I was on the show with. With very. You know very raised better as the red flag. And from my perspective I've consulted and work with they can't see it on announced our only and so it kind of in love with Pitt and and very really kind of took off quite rose colored glasses well. So. So I've noticed that's why I was so excited to be back on the show and how to become a recurring guest. If things keep working out the way they have reached our mum on the show because what I did. Based on Berry weight in the you know I realized I was wrong about the appeal. It's going to be cloud over the stock's gonna take longer than expected to you know realign. There you know take advantage of all the new contents. So I'm I'm I'm a huge opportunity cost with the and I had a huge position and AT&T because. You know I've held it for for a long long time and just kept reinvesting dividends. I actually sold AT&T. And you know my best of breed and me in the Specter was entry link which was actually yielding 12% of time. And I took the AT&T money and dumped it in two sentry winked at 1794. A share. And now all my service. Is up. 24%. Geez he's a beast enemy check. I mean this and I'm gonna utterly Tucker give you my address the desire spirit you made me. Look at my card genius don't so now I won't be in but yeah I think you could give them half the dividend is still be at. I'm telling you it was it was just do was just really worked out perfectly because eighteenth she was yielding fixed news so that got a red flag and and you know my I read a service so discovered dividends for for income you know my my. You know it's high yield quality income is when I'm trying to get that right and so. I had my eye on entry link and had a little bit of money and it is so like it keep track of it. And I thought you know I really have faced an entry point if I bought I used to own level three years ago I bought it when it was fifty cent. You know and and I read the pitch and outside. You know with essentially every dollar that comes into the sides now goes straight to the bottom line is a big cost for their network. And they reached you know years ago they they've they became you know cash flow positive on that. And now bit new level three management is is in charge. At century Italy now so. I'd like. Would be you know story says that on the last conference call epic knocked out of park you know I don't know if you knew it. Don't know I do 'cause their debt. We do it how they managing their debt. They're doing great you know because. Bit thing is that people didn't realize how powerful level three was the Bard level three. About a year ago and end the previous quarter was the first quarter that they reported. You know everything together but they still kept a separate and then this time was the first time they just put it all the other. And a current level three just changed the whole. Debt profile oh and can cash flow you know profile. And they're. The other big problem people but actually that was that they're known as the old school you know there's that. Bedanova the last of land line in the United States but with the level three acquisition now they're the biggest player in the upcoming five. And that everything that's to be the key thing is what they do with that cash flow from that let the young legacy business that's on the decline. And that's a problem AT&T that it they made a huge mistake with the DirecTV acquisition so how these companies invest that cash flow. In new businesses is going to be critical of their success don't you think. You're exactly right and you know that's what I like about what story was staying because that's exactly who was his focus. As well its cash flow per share for them and they're going from lower mark they're cutting out lower margin businesses which is basically be old. You know and there focusing on the higher margin business visitors more of that to come on that's just that's that that's the tell wouldn't. And level three is a good example putting that money to work in the right way at that from what I monetary. Now in the. No they made a great acquisition there and that's that's what drew my attention serve in the first place. And put him on my watch list because I I've made a lot of money on level three. It was a spectacle live playback and level three was supposed to you know practically go bankrupt but think almost ten years ago when. And that was one on. Interesting all right Dave Clark thank you very much for your perspective on AT&T. And century like. The Dave Clark five I love it thanks. Based music to our ears. If the yeah you know date there are a lot of soccer's bets on dividend payers in only eat ice I've seen it before you panel seat again. Where you know albeit parties is somebody seemingly just body. And did an impaired 8% or leave them with the cover ratio you I don't the their responses like with with the coverage for its doughboy SS. I hate that that's I. That's if you don't go to covered racially he's probably should be by an individual stock I've heard is that is that I make too harsh irony is that mean completely agree efforts at the more money has been lost in pursue of excessive yield. Than any other pursuit is Aaron and I think it's really true if you if you see a dividend yield above four and a half percent. Be careful out. Markets are rallying today we've got the Dow up a 127. I folks it's chuck and Mike from the financial exchange and we're talking today about how to invest in a rising interest rate environment specifically. With regards to what kinds of sectors performed well what kind of sector struggled when rates are going up Michael we talk about that. Iranian interest for everything mortgages credit cards. Yes they are technically paying out a little bit more on CDs and bank deposits as well but they're usually more than making up for that on the on the charges that they had to go when we look on the downside because as much as there might be good news and some sectors there's always another area that ends of struggling what parts the economy and what types of stocks might struggle. If rates go up well two big areas tend to be utilities and real estate on the real stateside it's pretty obvious if mortgage rates go up ban people are going to be able to afford less real estates that makes sense utilities it's a little bit less obvious but effectively a lot of investors by utilities because they're seen as a replacement to CDs or bonds in some cases because their relatively safe investments when interest rates go up sometimes they sell those safe investments in favor of those CDs and bonds again folks. President trump has given. Defense bill a 717. Billion dollar green light we'll talk about it. I've never been to Turkey have you ever been to Turkey right you worried about Turkey and small economy doesn't mean anything we'll talk about Labor Day mean mean a lot. Especially those living in Europe. And then finally when chat about you on mosque did he really did he really in fact half financing secured when he made that. Blunders tweaked last week hi everybody it's Berrian John Moody with you here it's a Tuesday morning and this I think if you're in the military you're pretty happy. Your record budget seven or seventeen billion dollar defense budget couple highlights seven point six billion. Will buy 77. F 35 joint strike fighters from Lockheed Martin. But you're feeling pretty good about that. New long range stealth beat 21 bomber my my the stealth bombers are amazing person an action no I went to an air show one time. And I I heard nothing. And I looked up in the was a bomber right on top me. Like as a big ones with the big wings and you can't he can't see or hear it and it just comes up on unit and you know we got to buy a new low long range stealth. Beat 21 so good news for the defense budget and all the military got a race two point 7% yup so pairings for the workers and a nice hardware for the rest and it's a it's a positive of big number no question about that you don't join the military for income and he. No ya get rich but at least she got about two or 3% more than you forgot last year threats that that helps. Turkey's Lira crisis I mean this thing is you know going from bad to worse. And there's part of me John writes that while. You know be he's not exactly our best friends in the world right we're not best east with interns they do a lot of things that. Some people think they Foster terrorism Friday they beat you they can be accused of that. Yeah I mean there there's sometimes our friends sometimes not really our friends and a but let me see me there what you call that it with with the word for enemy strategy at the desktop but there they're strategically important they have access to nuclear I mean so there that is significant country. There economy you know as you said is not much. If you look at the market cap of their entire stock market and it's his biggest Netflix. Netflix is as big as the Turkish stock market. The problem here is boy I about the the genius of our government. By issuing its own debt in its own currency. You have to worry about things like what turkeys in with right now which is that they own a on the dollar denominated debt. You're rolling your rise right now saying what's the big deal of the whole world does the intellect when the Chinese edit people don't realize that when the Chinese by Boeing jets were. They buy them in US dollars right and they borrow the money in and they have to pay that back so when they devalue their own currency. In the kind of shoot themselves. In that sense no doubt about double what Turkey's got the same problem and this is a challenge right now I think when you talk about what does this matter to the world in two to the United States. What this does is it puts a lot of pressure on the United States because. We have such a strong currency. And as other countries get weaker are. Currency relatively speaking. Gets relatively stronger and they can't buy our stuff why into if you if you're a Turkish company in you have dollar denominated debt. Your making payments. You're making payments. In two years having to buy a much more expensive currency so every time I don't get stronger you it's cost you more money and the fact that matters are not going to be of the make their payments mean. You get a country like Turkey. We've seen Russian default we've seen you know the key if this is the first rodeo currently we have seen this story before we have seen countries like. Actually. Default on their debt the thing that makes it different here and what why am somewhat concerned not about this issue but about the precedent possible contagion. In all of the previous examples of these emerging market crises. We tried to work together to help or just not certainly not hurt the situation. In this case. Our government is kind of taken a hard line with them in making it arguably even more difficult for so they're not the fact that we're going in different directions. Raises some concern to me about stability for the Turks are liars Muni who heads to the meaning of Chinese well that day the Turks it will release that pastor whose. Yeah American citizen right Bryant and the audio will release them in their full crap they they lifted is that the guy out right I president will be so that. And the navy. The president and the president is coming out with these tweets that are making them mad and I'm huh. AME he is punishing them aged kids have a shooting war with her right correct it is I know it was last time somebody won. Shooting world the Turks. Idea I ever had no idea if you ought to go to war right so we do you you disrupt their economy. Maybe he's over disrupting but the fact of the matter is there's an easy solution. Raising interest rates will stop lying to the end pastor and that's true yeah and he social site yeah it is it. It's a preacher and yet you know. Yeah I mean maybe this may be another example where you know the bar is greater in the blight and after both sides kind of you know between each other and make comments and and you know big cats that at the end of the day they've backed down the brain. You know of the pastor comes home and the problem is at the end of the day after all that's done Turkey has a problem that you have to raise interest rates a ton to 25 to 30%. But look hey gotta take your medicine deal with it that's that's the way it's been done what they created the problem yeah. Any they have created their problem their leader is no different than Mussolini I mean it's just. He's a fascist it's dictatorship he's been their fifteen years. Eight and into who exacerbate the problem the United States currency is there is very very strong right now so it's. It's a worst of all situations for them it's really bad I don't feel badly about I don't either is not something where it's an elegy present trucks being meat ball AV. And and you look at human right violations on the way they treat American citizens on to say is that boon for whatever reason. We're in a situation here where there's a there's a currency crisis there's an emerging markets crisis. And this time it's not a case where everybody's working together as a realist how we deal with this. We have multiple conflicts going up the same time which is making it an usual. And you know he think about from a a source perspective yet the Turkey relies on tourist dollars you know compact in the first track. What feeds upon itself and it really yes and their economy beat stories and it's not gonna get it. Now many times right what's ironic is is probably a great time to go and get your dollar were going real far if there's a and they're being in being in Turkey and got a heck of a deal that there's a I would say there's a big swim in in August where you swim from. Europe Asia called hell's port swing so it I don't think of Jamaica and its losses and 33 and a half kilometers affair and I'd I compete in that stuff but I get the emails with. Right they get cheap steel he got a target your dollar goes real far printer and a you on moss me I just want to reset our poll question for that day. Ilan mosque last week tweeted that he had secured financing is a lot of skepticism. Towards that. Our poll question is today do you think Elon Musk had funding secure. There's more and more evidence mounting that he in fact did not have funding secured for the purpose of taking Tesla price. Like the fact that the board of directors thinks today it might be a good idea the senate committee looking into the possibility of going private giving them at an indication that. Maybe a deal was not done I mean this really comes down to semantics though because. What Hamas is Guinness org you is okay yet I didn't have the I's dotted t.s crossed. But I met with the officials who said they'd be willing to buy large chunks. Of Tesla. And I don't twenty to 30% myself and insiders on another percent so he's selling half the company to those who want to sell I could easily do that. Should mention he should the senate that where rather at 420 dollars a share. Security's secure financing how high did the stock though he did it went up to around 365370. Now it's back down around 35355. I think and higher you went up to three. On a brief. Yeah yeah yeah the day it was at 380 meaning in the supposed to purchase prices for twice a lot yeah your your skeptical that they wrote from a for drug just as a layman Nate you're not invest eight united hold eight in fairness I did traded for a couple of trades yeah I immediately do you own it now I do not on them so. You're not you're you're not in the stock. But you know only if there was really an offer if Wall Street believed. That there was a 420 dollar priced at 8410. And a 400. The time value money obviously but if you like around 400 and if they really sincere. In thinking oh there be bidding war it might be higher yet and I think he's happy yet where is that I think it would have discount the possibility of a bidding war. But I think they would pick up at 420 and time value money would easily be 400 and our rhetorically that. So you can affect this trading at what 355360. Yemeni were right now that tells you that there's a relatively small chance of this deal. On the assent as cynical as it about this I think the possibility he could raise the funding to buy all of the shares that wanted to be tendered. At 420 dollars a share and is not that a reasonable and it is a pretty decent chance that could actually happen 27%. Of our listeners think that Evelyn had funded center. And I think that's a good number I I I yeah I I don't think he had a security but I think he felt the recall about his ability to be able to secure it. If he won it match that's kind of where we're standing. And he's gonna have an issue with the securities exchange commission because. They're gonna wanna know what he knew and when he knew it they have they've reopened their investigation of a tweet like that that's rather definitive you can vote. No. We wanna hear from new tech Steward Barry's 263566. And let us know what you think about the stories we discuss your team to the financial exchange radio network. Plus economic so far the report card used positive but will the good times last Rick Newman. Is senior columnist from Yahoo! finance Rick thanks for joining us today. And Eric are the favorite here at what what is your trump and comics report card grade and white either. We can trumpet packing the trump economy for over a year on it. He economic measures and we've been translating that into a letter great east York and I trump apparently there has earned a BAA. Or the last five months. He and the way we're we're hearing that we're comparing trump. Would be a performance of the economy under seven prior presidents going all the way back to Richard Nixon at the same point in president outburst current president. Trying to implement new policy is doing well on employment. And on manufacturing employment. Doing pretty well on the stock market but he doesn't have the best not market performance. Export is something we're measuring I think that I'm an area where I can probably like murder. In the in the future but for now he is pretty well. Have you tried to figure out what a limited trade war verses say a full blown trade war might mean to GDP and ultimately the truck and comics are report card. There has basically been my job. Okay he keeps this. I'm eager. Protect it in March when. Are there one Il and aluminum we've now got additional error. On a lot of Chinese import that he has written a lot more so you know market reacting negatively it is beginning. I'm better prepared and we've gone into effect mark it kind of you know at the level where you missed it really is it any worse than double trade and bury very tiny part of the by trump has written on her on. Roughly ten times the amount of imports he would retire so far. And we get error even partly down. Market. You know economy and market to what you're saying you know it is it a little bit worse to achieve a couple aunts and didn't point out of GDP growth. You have to account where retaliatory air wire trading partners and basically. They put in place almost one dollar for dollar is. Make the impact and he grows a little worse. What's happening right now is the economy is otherwise pretty strong you know where I think on. Game. What it would otherwise be. Negative acted you know they protectionism. But I don't think that Iowa expecting economy is made me be at a if need be strong progress year the most economists are saying we you weakening orbited 20192020. And that land. The impact of all of this protectionism could start to become more. Saying this ends up being fairly but nine and that we move beyond this and and a full scale trade war doesn't break out the concerns me is in. Present terms right now we've looked at a 77 billion dollar monthly. Budget deficit not trade deficit but budget deficit that's a 79%. Increase. In what we're spending vs what we take yen in great times. What does this translate if the economy slows down at all. It potentially problematic and by an accurate comparison. The last time that the unemployment rate was as low as it is now in the late 1990. And back then we had warriors in a row. Federal air federal budget or. Surpluses collect what you would expect it he during boom times than you when you when you have a boom and it's a real boo. I you have a lot more tax revenue coming in to don't have the race practice he get more accurately you've got a lot more economic activity. A corporate income has not been personally comic book. But right now what's happening. If we are we you'll low unemployment rate but these budget that it is getting worse and we're pretty soon we're gonna have one trillion dollar annual deficit and I think what they're calculated. A lot of that growth is not real it is borrowed from the from the future and it's gonna have to be paid back in the U. I would bad. You know a lot of the a lot of economists had had bought it by now at the amount of equity out. We already would have had problems but in which would shell out as rising interest rates and other thing. And other happen but that doesn't mean it'll never happen I think a lot of people rightfully worried. What's your take on my GDP going forward next year. I understood the kind of what I think good mainstream economy where. 28 yeah. We may have peaked at four point 1% in the second quarter so we can get you know around 3% for the rest of the year. And the market kind of Angela there in the back of their fiscal. Boot from the pack content from the barrel spending increase it is you're gonna start you're out. That'll be especially noticeable in the second half of 2019 and that's the point honestly which become become vulnerable to respect it. So we want to have a respect in just because of Warner who in which we didn't foresee. But if there are other problems that come together in a way that nobody really like is heading back recessions happen and we are looking vulnerable around. When he not only 2019 or twenty point. Yep and attention may quickly switch from the trade deficit of the budget deficit as we go for recruitment numbers we talked about no doubt about that Rick Newman. Senior columnist for Yahoo! finance thanks for joining us appreciate your reverend Eric Eric's. Here concerned about the deficit budget deficit yeah budget deficit is unequivocally bad we can talk about the trade deficit it's mostly bad but there's like good about it and budget doses unequivocally bad and the news on this is very negative I'm very concerned about it line. Because the idea of spending would be taken. When times have never been better when the last time we have this economy we have a surplus in the under Clinton we had a surplus for street yours yeah but then we went into a terrible recession after surplus channel like government surpluses. You don't know. Like government deficits if you if it got in the good times if you have a government surplus that means were being overtaxed. True and so we were clearly set for a a tax cut but the problem here is. If you're at a trillion dollar deficit which will work Peggy for possibly next when you've got 4% GDP that's the year award what happens in bad times. So yeah you're right dizzy you know back in. 2009. When we're in terrible recession. That is the time we should have been running huge deficits that we deficits or for bad times you know the the only when you win win in 20082009. We should have been. Doing government spending like crazy and here's the pro infrastructure you think about our roads and highways are terrible and so much of this is entitlements I'd love to tell you it's from big fat government that the president should go cut and congress should cut. The problem is a lot of that is entitled guys if Social Security. Well AM and then I've got cut cut Medicare good luck with that in Medicare is the big issue of Medicaid those two big issues that I haven't seen a lot of progress on and we have to address that there's no way around that going fortieth structural. Structural now big changes that have to agree on a bipartisan way you know. They coming up we got two really important stories to cover one or be talking about oil but secondly we're going to be testing your knowledge about Woodstock. Because it was 49 years ago this week that the Woodstock music festival opened on a patch of farmland. In Wheatley that's Hamlet in upstate New York will be yet testing your knowledge. No privacy is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange in. One of talked a little bit about how to invest any rising interest rate environment the Federal Reserve has raised rates twice already this year. The most likely projection. Two more hikes over the remainder of the year and Mike. Let's talk first with bonds when we talk about bonds in conventionally US treasuries. How they tend to move as rates go up well. They tend to be in adversely correlated the price an abundance embers are correlated to the interest rates prevailing interest rates that are out there in this generally make sense you know if if interest rates go up and suddenly you can go by that same bond that's paying higher rate of interest that the price of your bond is going to be less valuable this gets inflated the longer term that bonded so if you have a ten year bond. That price impact is going to be a lot more significant than a five year. So effectively that the part of your portfolio that you typically think to be safe money and most stable. You might have to make some adjustments in order to make sure that you're not losing principled during this time if you have the intention of selling as rates are going up. That's absolutely correct and if you haven't made those adjustments already this year you've likely seen in impact to your bond portfolio. Specifically when retirement that you wanna take a look at what's called the duration of your bonds. And make sure that you know it's just at least in line with the overall marketplace and you understand the impact of rising interest rates on them. Trivia is sponsored by Arnold restaurant and play Embarq and here's the deal. QB play trivia every day. And today trivia is based on the Woodstock music festival. It was open on a patch of farmland in Whitley it's Hamlet in upstate New York in the town of Bethel New York will be asking your trivia. Asking you trivia questions about the Woodstock music best of festival the way you play. He's you'd text the correct answer to that question and ask you are tech's number 63566. But wanted to go to great lengths to remind you have to put my first name bear BE a RY at the beginning of your text message. In order to participate particularly those who were new to the text. What was the name of the dairy farmer who allowed the Woodstock music festivals organizers to use his land for the event. The text number here 63566. Willis will go with text or number thirteen is a pretty easy question to. Would you say I don't know one to over now it's generate I don't know about on either. Yeah I IPT you know all parts think it's easy like real. Just leader went to bed at 63566. Is the text number. What was the name of the dairy farmer who allowed the Woodstock music festival organizers to use his land for the event. And 63566. And its number thirteen. That will win the prize because there's no surprise when we portrait. Saudi Arabia cuts their oil production in July despite an OPEC agreement to hike their output. I don't know they like how do you know with tax Saudi Arabia doing some people say they cut some people say they actually raised production yet this is. But we are you really careful we hear that does all the countries have agreed to do one thing either cutting oil production or increasing oil production. And the saudis a throttle Brack drilling last month after agreeing remember where the OPEC yeah and Russia. In other producers to put more barrels on the market a member the president got the phone with them they said yeah. So what do you think the sweet spot news for you know for what we. It is that's that's the big debate from a perspective. We'll be gets too hard economy the consumer the consumer. I let us consumer the Swedes are OK guys that get dollar downright editor fifty cents a gallon and later 25 older kids right writer and I would be great. But in reality. You know I. The if it's too cheap then we can't produce a girl and we've become dependent on our enemies right it's too high it's close down the economy. And this is thing I I'm not really sure what the sweet spot is for the consumer although my assumption would be. The cheaper the better but in terms of the economy the fact of the matter is as we've talked about before we have a substantial investment in energy. High energy exploration is a big industry how in the United States we produce eleven million barrels a day etc. we're now arguably number one in the world so. There's a plus side economically for our country economically you know in terms of in terms of the price of oil. Seventy dollars is a sweet spot from the perspective oil companies. Because they feel like they can make a lot of money is seventy dollars a barrel on and they also feel as though it's really not that bad for the consumer because they're paying. You know well under three dollars a gallon at the pond. And like to do we pay 280 to ninety. And I mean I just paid 279 did you and I I would think but I think it's gonna come down a little bit after Labor Day probably to 6265. During the season yet 293 this morning okay well. I mean what what more under three pretty much. And and that's that's a big number I think under three dollar and this to the vehicles that are on the on the road are getting better gas mileage and make sure every time we trade in your vehicle I don't care what category it is even getting an issue V and the new suvs getting better gas mount in the old she could cut. So we're we're getting better gas mileage we're using less of the product because we're conserving more and we have more energy efficient products to to deal with. At seventy dollars a barrel they can make money in my heart I've you and I both Fulton BP is we're both investors and that. And I listened to a conference call at BP about just about a month ago did a and they said the you know they're entering into projects. That never break even at around 35 dollars a barrel and like they're moving out of stuff that's expensive. In the getting into exploration they can do with 35 dollars because the technology. These companies found a way to make money at much much lower prices and that's a good for everybody why and and they dominate cousy and scale they've got. Access to pipeline just shipping. Tough to break into that as stark as it absolutely is and you know world Dutch is another company. That's a you know international company that puzzle that's very very big and nausea expiration. You know they're just finding ways every data cut costs through technology being more efficient. And you know 35 dollars as the new fifty him. So they can make a lot of money and that tells me that if they can make a lot of money at fifty. Prices gonna gravitate towards 58 in normal times I think I think we're looking at lower oil prices. In terms of infrastructure the talking about roads highways telephone service hospitals. Schools infrastructure that's that's how I define infrastructure and some of the worst states in the country for. Quality of our infrastructure are located in New England the best state in the country ironically is for. Florida came in fifty which on this list is the number you wanna be out they have the least problems I think the one I was most impressed with. Is roads in poor condition in Florida only one point 3%. That's very good on the web. That's true that weather is and I used to driving down from Florida the roads. Rosary in great shape like as a New England they're well the first thing that jumps out at you is in how these roads are so I think tolled roads and where they get the money a lot of the mark shall we pay for gas is gas more or less expensive. Were literally and it was Los Angeles but it's coming no state income tax. Rain Nokia need sales tax them yup there's assistants. But you know again I think got a great infrastructure into England's infrastructure is just terrible well the champions. The undisputed world champion use Rhode Island worst infrastructure in the country worst in the country get this roads in port condition. 24 point 6% I'll I'll attest to that I drive through Rhode Island twice a week on 95. And it's just a cluster. It's awful via the often times a tick to 95 just to around product it's just he ought to a drive the extra 510 so one and four roads are in poor poor condition not bad you know not averaged four. That 23 point 3% of bridges are deficient I mean this is a safety issue. One out of four bridges are dangerous from Massachusetts isn't much you know I know masters is pretty double what we're gonna have an opportunity really crown Rhode Island. For this incredible achievements. Think our our friends from WH JJ are saying I am the fact that no wonder I need a new tires every six months. Others like WH JJ is a great radio station but the you know we wish you luck getting to work yes no doubt having divided senate tigers look at massive Connecticut. I mean. Connecticut's. Not great test uses number eight in. And don't give network and wrote to port condition Massachusetts seventeen point four. Third highest. Seems like I EC I would have said mass is the worst ever or maybe just the roads I drive on but it just seems a director Mike I've a feeling some words. Yeah I'll our town roads are terrible Connecticut. Billions at high hazard risk. 58%. Great great so don't go boating in the damn you know Connecticut Connecticut has in a way it. A Connecticut Connecticut has no money yeah that you see it gaining in the race and I'm looking as an investor at ways to get some yield yeah. General obligation bonds in the state of Connecticut are yielding quite a premium to treasuries of life. 5060 basis points and not going out a long time I mean tax free and better rated in treasures. And you're basically betting on Connecticut's ability to pay its bills for the next five years let's Wednesday exactly to raise taxes right that's why I think it's a good deal. But the fact that those yields and London raises some serious red flags were missed the finance stated. Connecticut New Hampshire and Maine kind of middle of the pack yeah. Which are pretty 24 you know Vermont's pretty good which in the New England region is relatively impressive rate. But Rhode Island. Home run with the pave the stock market remains unpredictable because of that he should always be prepared for the future I'd like to tell you about a great event.
