This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The country of Turkey has a problem and we're gonna talk about the ramifications. Of their stances are relates to a detained pastor. Also take a look at the week. Ahead what are we looking at in terms of economic news of the coming down the pike this week and then finally. We're going to be talking about. Buying gasoline I was hated the idea of buying gasoline higher body it's very sharp with you here it's a Monday morning in. This story regarding Turkey broke I believe it was yesterday might have been Saturday night. What did the president. Increasing sanctions against Turkey in raising tariffs and just. Wreaking Havoc with the Turkish economy. Yet it was on on Friday actually win we saw this and the big thing that you see here is that the Turkish economy has as a problem in that they borrow weighed more than they spend. Gain they also really export anything. And so because of that it's a country that runs all kinds deficits and you need someone to buy that debt in order for those deficits to get funded. In the problems that when your currency collapses which is. Pretty much what happened on Friday the currency was down as much as 21% ended down about 16% and it was down an additional 10% in early trading today. Before rallying a little bit. But the problem is if your currencies falling no one wants to take on that risk of that currency exchange and so you find it very difficult to finance these deficits. And so it has the potential. To turn into a balance of payments problem where you can't figure out how to pay your bills do the import a lot. And I don't know how much they actually import on the ticket quiz our first generally they're gonna feel the pain news. If there cock their their currencies declining dramatically. And they need to import milk gasoline electricity the yeah well that's a Turkey imports about a 186. Billion dollars worth of goods and that John McCain when you're 1% more expensive it it just became more expensive for them to do so. And so the problem is if you can't produce enough domestically in order to meet those payments when you get new problem we're in Central Bank has to keep printing more and more currency devalues it further and kind of spirals down. And that's kind of similar to what we saw with the Asian financial crisis back in 1997. Where that kind of kicked off in Thailand and really spread the route all of not Asia but it's it really is a problem where you know if you look at Turkey's biggest exports. Gold is the biggest one that twelve billion dollars a year cars nine point four billion. Delivery trucks five billion and now vehicle parts four point four billion you know it's all those things the problem is few currency goes down. You get less Purcell and those things abroad ensues there and you don't know that the balance of the balance of payments is actually getting worse as we try to work through this so. What was the impetus behind the president's actions had to do with the from what I read over the weekend. There's a pastor being held captive in Turkey and I think the by interpretations faxes that. Way that the Turks made the president believe they are gonna release the pastor over the last ninety days they still have not and they have been dragging their feet. And he finally reached his limit and said screw. That that seems to be much action is that fair as it seems to be my understanding I mean it's I don't really I haven't seen anything else that's necessarily. The of going on there obviously Turkey over the last. Was it two or three years a needed Turkey's becoming a relatively inhospitable place to live a few of any kind of divergent political views. From their present or Dejuan. You know they they went through a year a a coup that may or may not have even been staged by their own government in order to try to root out. You know potential opposition they arrested like 8000. Professors from universities and put them and I mean. It is not really. A hospitable place to live if you do not adhere to the party line these days match in the impact this'll have on terrorism. Well tourism in Turkey's already been depressed over the last couple years because of this type stuff. And it's a beautiful country if you talk to people banned the nightly rave about it but it. She EB taking your life and Europeans could be worse than go to Mexico well well maybe not that. To be completely honest if you've gone over to Turkey in the last three to four years. Your passport is been flagged by the State Department already you know an answer there there are cases were people of gunned Turkey and come back. In their passport name gets flagged and effectively if you try to fly after going to Turkey and you'll be pulled out for enhanced screening just about every single time in the reason. Was because on the southern border you've got serious there. And there was concern about crisis infiltration whether or not people were. You know traveling to Turkey is a means to get to Syria or somewhere else and so they would pull you out for enhanced screening I don't know that's still going on but I know all kinds of people that problems back and fifteen and sixteen. Where you know domestic fights that define New York to Boston afterwards and it after half an hour screening you know to make sure that they weren't you know problem that'll teach. I'd July retail sales lead the didn't economic data for this week is not that he had July retail sales and you have housing data. Those are the big ones in terms of economic data coming out this week. Yet it's a relatively quiet week we get the retail sales numbers on Wednesday they are expected when you strip out auto is expected to show monthly growth of around point 3% so continuing. To move in the right direction there the housing numbers the big ones that we get are gonna be on Thursday of this week and you remember back in July for the June numbers. We had disappointing both housing starts and permits both of whom. Below expectations at the start for down like 11% from expectations they missed badly. So that's the one that I'm gonna be most interested in watching in in seeing it look was this a one time blip. Or is there something afoot in terms of either building costs labor shortages or something else and that means we are not getting back to where we should be so. Housing starts expected to show about a 9% increase this week. We'll see what we get a couple days on the. How often do you guys have to buy gasoline. And let me gas talk currency you have to buy gasoline. Seven times a month and chuck I'm guessing you buy gasoline. Nine times a month. I'm about 77. Date I'm once a week. Once a week from all the driving needed to go like for like to light foot on and on it's pretty good on nine gas mileage or mocha. Reason I ask is there's this service that is available now. Where you pay if the talker twenty dollars a month from your team paying 240 bucks a year. You no longer have to go to the gas the gas station comes to you. So you would simply be like how are you for gas right now. I need gas today so while you're at work you go to your phone. And use that during the show you and you would and they would. Haven't heed your gas candidly T universal key in gear gas tank Erica they would fill you up at a discounted price by the way. The price would be less than what you would pay normal gas how much laws are talking pennies gave very little so. Not really much edit your shopper you might end up actually paying more let's say your you'd yield place we get discounted gas. It's watered. It as big a ghetto boys yeah. I filled up with half and half yesterday on the Italian while you eat bread. Bite my questions. I I would think this is pretty Pulitzer especially for somebody like Utah can be your buying gas twice a week on average. You're your painful price this service by the way that they offer will also include detailing. And oil changes right they'll do an oil change. At your plate like wherever you happen to be at no additional costs and all you pay for it baked in to pay for the detail that. How if you're busy guy rate let's say your sales professional you're on the road here we are working 6070 hours a week yeah. Well you you can go by your own gas is the cost of that rate that time. And it's always raining snowing when you buy your gas you can detail your own gas stations are tough. Knew you know that they get that out the ones I don't. Would you go to engines gas ring Indies in midfield it is not cover and guess I don't think I've ever been their destination now one and I'll come. I don't way to have well. Kentucky go to the gas station the four guys to mountain near pump all the tires they'd run taxing and anglers. 1953 all over again now. I know so ever in the marathon so just as I was curious kids. I have ever actually wondered about things like this so in general I found that it takes about three minutes to fill up a full tank of gas. Three a theory would official line. I don't go to gas stations lines and I don't wait no it a try and waiting for gas and do you use any of the conveniences like he ever going in by I don't know crew for bread now and that really see your gas alone I'm on gasoline in and out and usually it's in the morning typically gets 630s and cumin is the officer comes in three minutes tie aims at eight times so that's totally write me at 2420 so you're paying almost a dollar a minute. Which means that your breakeven point is if you think that your time is worth more than sixty dollars now and he should use the sooner than you can use. Would you ever use the detailing service of the oil change now now I I would oil changes or pain. Rate at a product there you're reveling wore myself how long do you wait even if you go to elect Jim beam along anyway with no lying half hour easy. As with no loss of them I read a book. You know the film myself with knowledgeable like targets that's how power of a wasted time essential it's only Wear it sometimes hitting a bad book sometimes it's. Our so you so let's just do news the this service is that you might use. I would use the detail and service there I mean depending on how much picture pain but he pressure it's putting it 20/20 bucks a month. Maybe you said it was going to be more Favre wanted detail yet but you'd paid more on the TV go to extort her car fees it paid. Don't eat as well so I would use. Just personally. I would you don't detail and service I would use the oil change service in a minute I would use I eagle on my right change. And I would use the gasoline answer so I'd at least that's our poll that. Yeah would you pay twenty bucks a month. For those three services. Willie days that would include pumping your own gas. Oil changes why your work day so this guy can be change in the oil while you're sitting in your your office. And then the occasional detailing of your car which I would use probably for six times a year. Yeah I mean if it was flat fee of twenty bucks a month it was gas will change in detail it's not twice a month right I just pulled up the site actually that. Twenty month only covers one fill up week. It. If you want additional gas at seven dollars per delivery. I mean there's a market out there if if there was you know bucks a month for all three of those things I think that's a market for I think the other stuff is going to be an additional fee on top down Miller and I don't want an additional three. To me twenty bucks a month for all for about a year time Tucker. Think about not about my I'd while Michael Moore element time. When your time is well just think about you could spend that time the bigger the act I've gone to get pilot changed. Personal life places at the drop off the night before right if it's a pain or no it's a pain. I hate the oil changed things to get electric power. Like I haven't changed it. You know it's like a right. The once every couple years that might be a better solution. Get the electric electric car because you not to buy gas you know NATO to get gas Orrin and his notion you know it would be nice paper Karmi about it. After your targets with 57000. Miles we paper tuna so. Any given year I mean is that there's some that always breaks when you get a car up to that point on my have a pro is somewhere around 60750. Bucks a year. With the site that servers and one that is of the of the company's called Yoshi. And so the available in Boston. It's available in Boston and I'm pulling up the actually put the hack site was I just on him. I thought I was on the Yoshi site on the ticket quick look here. A year ago yet so it's it's start Yoshi dot com Coca. And you know it it it gives you all the information about it never thing it's not the trade their on your phone cut there's no long term contract which is kind of night. DP if you sign up there even if he just used at the winter months. Right as it might what's worse they go to the gas station it's leading out six inches slot when you know your car. Via telephone that there's there's not much it's worse that that's about as bad anyway would you pay twenty dollars a month to never have to pump your gas again. And we're here to talk about a brand new product available for landlords it's called Z deposit dot net Jake. What. Barry we created a security deposit product. To really help the problem a lot of land border facing with security deposits which is. You know one it's time consuming to open the small enough security upon cumbersome it's. And yet to go into the branch gets signed paperwork and their small dollars and in the turn. It is certainly the complaints in Massachusetts really tough for landlords and security deposit accounts. You have to give them ten in certain forms when they open up the count and you have to pay interest a new and we should do all this canal through Z deposit all of that you can do Thursday deposit it literally takes about forty seconds opened up an account. We handled the automatic forms that are generated in the count number department commission statement all that said lieutenant. And interest descent of the tenant automatically every year. This sounds like something it's going to be very valuable to large landlords it might have 200 tenants and small landlords that might only have five tenths yeah absolutely with a large landlords. It's just a lot of hassle to managed so we make dad very efficient for the small landlords a lot of them are afraid of nineteen complaints done correctly so some of them. Some of them don't even like taking security deposits were hopeful that this up and do that. Folks if he'd like to learn more about C deposit go to their website Z deposit dot net. That's pretty good sized market that's a real sample. That's a pretty good sized market for people take it. You know once again if you're lucrative detail and oral changed then we can talk but it was just gas bail and keep mine the twenty dollars only covers one. Phillip yeah that's kind of bad though government that would be after a lot of people that cover and and to be of the car cleaned. That's the evening you sick costs a hundred bucks Bertie card detailed and I paid. And if you lose oil changes and it was even Regis it was fifty bucks the oil changed a deal with. I would be over. Two lawsuits accuse Elon Musk a false statements to boost Tesla share price were learning more and more about the story by the hour. Yet EU on came out this morning and wrote a blog post on exactly what was going on. Saying that he had had conversations with the Saudi sovereign wealth fund. That led him to believe that he'd be able to secure funding to take the company private if necessary. This despite Saudi sovereign wealth funds saying. We don't really have any intention of doing this at all. That that the key issue here when it but that would be a normal response and their pork when it to drive the price now. There's like you know normal response to be no comment. You know. Here's here's where the rubber meets the road on this pardon the pun in this case. Elon Musk and and Tesla have a huge you'd really large bond deal that is set up in what are called convertible bonds bouquet. The convertible bonds need to be above 360 dollars per share. Next February in if they are the bond holders will get stock in the company as opposed you on having to pay them with okay. So when I look at this now look at it's somewhat cynically than I look at it and say. Eight. 360 in order to be able to not have to refinance that debt which he might not be able to refine its fair. So this cynical you pardon me says that. Do I think you on wants to the can be proud apps it I think it wants no part of public market clever last year every everybody bit every seat he would like them private company. If you're JPMorgan you would much prefer to be private is post op so I think you know of course he'd love to be taken private fun. It's it's really hard to figure out how they're going to do when he kind of deal to educate to leverage by app is there's no cash flow to pay a you you can't you do any kind of you know stock swap deal like I don't know how you do this to be honest. Who did the two issues he's facing you when he's got these lawsuits. Right so. There there's going to be deposition that he's got the SEC also. Now the the the he's got a lot of pit with chuck torture or you were gone when this happened what your take on you lawns actual tweet. I think you on could be and a fairly. Mid range heap of trouble I do too. I don't I don't I don't think you on is going to jail for an extended period of time but I think that you line could be in line pretty deep crap all said and done. If he had if he legitimately had those meetings right. And the Saudi hedge fund can just say well we're not gonna we're we're not gonna respond to the deposition where it so if that is what if he can prove that he had the meetings there are enough funding secured. And we'll see having meetings is different from time here I get. Hey new England's smallest colleges are struggling we'll be talking about it when we return to the financial exchange. Time now for the street watch a look at the market's performance so far today the victim Marian jog right here on the financial exchange radio network. Mike Armstrong is now with us for Wall Street Watson Mike let's start off talking a little bit about Nielsen today what's. One I'm with them yet healed. Data management act topic and all the TV ratings at a pretty rough twelve but there's not been nearly cut. But they're up about 10% this morning on news that Elliott management has taken a pretty big stake in and down on an 8% the company and they're pushing hard it's easy company to. Peter rating companies sell itself so what you look at that this new in this news industry stock about it. Susan good news for them and then I know that Cisco court not the computer company but the I believe there. Food service company right they they had earnings before the open today and it up 7% now so must've been a pretty good quarter fourth. It was he had been pretty much across the board their earnings per share came in knew a little bit tight but they had increased those that did in 85 cents. Your year. Sales reps six point 2% gross profit up five point seven really beat on pretty much all expectations. And again to match the margins were slightly down but but overall it was pretty accurate as stocks Mexican half percent this morning. Good. Very good thank you Mike. Mike Armstrong with Wall Street watch small colleges are in trouble and we've. DTL the couple merger serve. Closures. In the past one was mount Qaeda that was the one that got sold to UMass Amherst has or call and then we lock vinik emerged in the Boston University. But the Boston Globe shared some research to date conducted as a relates to small colleges. One piece of data I'll get beat chuck is Moody's found in July that one in five small colleges nationwide is under financial stress. And then secondly the number of tuition paying students has shrunk dramatically C. Is it that doesn't just affect small colleges that affects large colleges as well it seems like the small colleges are more susceptible to failure. Yeah it in the big thing that you see is out of these schools in the New England area. For 48 out of the 75 small New England schools tuition covered less of the schools expenses in 2016 then did in the five years prior to tuition. Is is simply not making up the chunk that it needs to. In the problem is the schools don't have big endowments and and alumni who were willing to cover the other BO the the other portion necessarily. And and I've been saying this for awhile and I think we're getting to this point now you are going to see a massive shaking out of lower tier schools over. Were really the next five to seven years this article seems to document really small schools you're talking about colleges that have. You know 40200. Less than 8000 kids are gonna be the ones affected first initially. You know you think this is systemic and it's going to be on a larger scale in key areas seed Boston University go out of business is no you brought in Miami is that those are very high in schools you know you people say you know University of Miami. You know oh it's not Harvard. It still is he really really good university mean there are thousands of universities in the country and you're talking about when it's in the top hundred they're not gonna have any trouble getting kids. The ones that are gonna have trouble getting kids. Interestingly enough are the ones where you know. They're not necessarily. You know great in terms of you know they don't give kids the highest SAT scores they don't have great athletic programs but they they bringing kids per year specialized programs and areas that are needed and they put out you know some pretty good hits in some cases. And you know some of those schools that you know maybe they've got a very niche program most talked start with someone over the weekend actually and who. His son was going in I didn't know this was degree was getting a degree in auto shop. Management and and and look at a civil you know what lies you wanna do that and you walk me through the whole thing now in it was a specialized degree program so that you could go and be able to walk in on day one and say look I know how to manage you know the shop and and it had you know co op pro phrasing things like that. And and you know those types of schools that are small and have a niche programs. Are going to be impacted in it's going to cause some problems I think. Butch is on line education. Impact these schools there are people saying in the heck would not Qaeda. I'm a minute to study something online has so much less expensive I think it's happening somewhat what's interesting is I have a a good buddy of mine who finished up his Ph.D. in economics about a year ago. And what he found was when it came to. Job placement and job success. Being on campus is critically important because of the socialization. And and he actually makes cents a logical well this is of it's actually kind of music to Myers are probably my parents as well he found that going out with your friends on the weekend was as important to your future success is study. I it is in it in it being able to network and taught her people and actually you know connect with people was just as important so for all the dealing firm withdrew rejection from all the girls he productive. How many in the league that hey Tucker that was a good actor I that was a whole different level therapies in or to deal with that we'll we'll leave that to another thing. But it has. Tucker at a time Tucker there's not a time these next couple all those projections. So. But in any case these small schools I think are going to have some issues. And that the next few years you know the mount write a story. Is not going to be the exception to the that you were gonna see more and this is and Justin knowing this across the country cross I mean like think about all the small schools that are upstate New York Western Pennsylvania that you know you you have heard of oh like I went he has someone on there now they are going to be the ones that it hit the big state universities that you know and then also you know the Busan BC's of the world and obviously the Harvard of the world they'll they'll be fine they'll they'll figure out how to get kids. I folks it's chuck and Mike from the financial exchange and we're talking today about how to invest in. What kind of sector struggled when rates are going up Michael we talk about your interest for everything mortgages credit cards. Yes they are technically paying out a little bit more on CDs and bank deposits as well but they usually more than making up for that on the on the charges that at when we look on the downside because as much as they might be good news in some sectors there's always another area that ends of struggling what parts the economy and what types of stocks might struggle. If rates go up well two big areas tend to be utilities and real estate on the real stateside it's pretty obvious if mortgage rates go up van people are going to be able to afford less real estates that makes sense utilities it's a little bit less obvious but effectively a lot of investors by utilities because they're seen as a replacement to CDs or bonds in some cases because their relatively safe investments when interest rates go up sometimes they sell those safe investments in favor of those CDs and on folks we've given you a couple ideas to think about with regards to how to invest in a rising rate environment but there's a brand new guide out from Armstrong advisory group and only up to you to get it is call 800. 393. 4001. We have a couple of stories related to housing that you probably won't hear anywhere else so we'll start off with that. And then we'll talk about a service that could save you a lot of times nobody seems to really appreciate hi everybody it's burying truck with you here. It is a Monday morning and I want to share this statistic with you because I don't think you'll see it on the evening news. Twice as many American homeowners. Were created in the last year. As had been created in the previous ten years. The number of US homeowners grew by one point eight million to 77 point nine million over the last twelve months. Ending June 30 at 2018. Chuck that is double the point nine million new homeowners that work added over the decade ending June 30 of 27 team. Yeah and that tells you a how bad the years away 0910 and eleven were for new homeowners and then how slow the recovery was after that. In that you know again this is not a rapid pace of new homeownership rate now that we're seeing even this is new kind of below historical averages one point it's pretty good though isn't so if you did that every year. So keep in mind that's new homeowners but that's not necessarily new council is okay those you know as some of those people may have been ranting and they've already been out on their own. But it's it's it's a good number but I I classifieds kind of. Could not core I talked to people in the real estate business and that they say that they're starting to see people. Who were foreclosed on in 79. And ten finally able to buy again they're coming back the other they've repaired their credit they've gained employment. The here saved a few bucks and there. You know these are people that were sworn to renting for the rest of their lives we understand nine and by Ian. Well and in what's interesting is a lot of the people that were hurt worse during that time were already in their forties and fifty cities are older you know these are people in their thirties that are coming back in these people in their fifties and sixties in some cases where they're saying hey look I I do want to buy again. Think about it you're you say you you you're you're you're working endear you retire at 65. Kids are finally gone they're gone and you've got a couple box you've got a pension yet Social Security. You renting. Because you had a bad experience in 07. But you know live another thirty years Writely a bundle by a place yup but PO dislike the idea of owning too because when you rent you don't really control your own destiny. Right is that our landlord can come in. Raise your rent. That landlord can come in and put some bad attendance next year I mean it's a year you don't have you don't have control when your rancher. Yeah I did. It really depends in certain situations Randy can make sense like let's say that it's a duplex and you know the owners living in one of the units and you know OK the not to put someone crazy next mean they maintain the place well is they live their two yep that's that's different situation but if it's you know what each unit building and you don't know what that's going on now. And Agassi won a tight we're you're seeing beat people commit to renting. Is in major cities easy if you look in in Boston or New York City is talking to my son and he is thinking about buying police he did the math. And with the changes in the tax laws. Manhattan is not a real attractive place to buy a place they're having some trouble solemn places in Manhattan the dear. He he looked at the number he said dad they got the prices kept them down fifteen to 20% before you'd even think about Byron yet there they're a little trouble there. Millennium goals still crashing with parents in strong economy and it reveals their ambition so obviously happy if I think I think what this story reflect gives you talker. I put this story reflects is that millennium goals. In many instances are anywhere from I don't know five to eight years behind. With the boomer generation was going through it in others my generation. Experienced many life events anywhere from five to ten years ahead of your generation. Terms of ownership of home. Marriage and having children. Mark you got special as we get the gist of it I think when he went participation trophy I think what happened was you guys went through. The worst economic crisis in your formative years you went through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression of 1930s. And I think it's had a long term effect financially and perhaps even emotionally. Yeah and in I do think you know you look at the statistics and a lot of these people that are still living with their parents saying look I'm doing in order to try to save up for down payment they. They they are doing it because now because they want to live with mom and that are male mom in the in Lana. They're doing it because they say look it's it's going to be the best way to get me out as as quickly as possible for good in that way and not come and. Back me up 40%. Of those aged 25 to 34 led their own household in 2060. 40%. That number's been dropping steadily from its 46%. In the year 2000 so's about it that six percentage points struck. Equates to 2.4. Million would be households think about the impact that hasn't house. Notes it's being it's. And now I do have to rip on colonials a little bit then at the moment I just as it sometimes it's two knows it's it's healthy to say look we've got some good things but we also got some bad. There's a survey done by a REALTOR.com I don't know if you covered this last week. Not pets. No homeownership melt so there's a survey done by our REALTOR.com. That found that 75%. Of millennial pet owners would pass on an otherwise perfect home if you did not meet their pet's needs to. Nets who knows what's most amazing as you say oh like OK get it appeared dog only want a big yard in this Nat. Or owner's okay. 8092%. Of bird owners said their pets needs were very important during their homes searched and 87%. Of cash owners inch said that their pet's needs were important during their home searched in 98% of rep tie owners proven once again that rep tie owners are the weirdest people in the world why would you want to own a sneak. Now what's the point of Batman I mean it's close eye opener so cuddle with you sneak a all right. 98% of them said that it was a very important that they're rec time I'll be happy in their home. I. Hurt small dog dogs the size of football manner he used pay extra rent. But it all day see that just because let our comment yet just you that they Tareq whether it's carpeting made it would you know it's you've either got to re finished hard woods or the carpet is gonna get shredded. I just. It happens and I just ads funded and usual that you know rep tie owners have special needs for the erupt. There's a service called wood because it's Yoshi right. Yes yes she start your machine. And and Yoshi is a service where they will deliver gasoline. To your home. War two you were office so let's say you're working 6070 hours a week in your wife and her husband is working 6070 or so week. And you don't wanna go to the gas station once week. Bill combined with the portable gas tank and fill up your gas they'll also offer ancillary services such as oil changes in party tailing. We have to pay twenty dollars a month is that the would you pay twenty dollars a month to never have to pump your own gas again. Now I said yes I I think that's a pretty good deal because the gas prices are a little bit below market rate. But so far Tucker only 16% of our audience would be willing to pay that twenty dollars a month. Heard gasoline seems all right to Maine I thought it would be higher but still pretty good market. If you 16%. Of adults that would be willing to pay it there's money to be made. In the service there's difference between people saying they're willing to pay out neck and people actually doing it and it is the big thing if it only covers one of fill up per week in. You know and and for a lot of drivers and particularly good let's say that you are. You know on the brutal do you get a sales job percent like that now. Your film up to 34 times a week some time to ask are you. Planning and sign up for us now I move ago a little bit late actor I like it but I wouldn't I drive an electric cars of Hamas how often do you Philip. It was a rings tomorrow but next. Actually mild side was right next to a gas station. One of the concerns about this delivery service use sixty imagine they're making it delivery in the rod. Rate in the east the aid delivery to something is wrong in the thousand gallons of gas in the ball. At that that's a lot of gas. India an incident that's been created. The crisis in retirement. Is upon us EP you're already seeing people retire. With very little or no savings. In their retirement accounts and share just to statistics with you and denying him I'll I'll give you might proposed solution to the dilemma. Within eight years track of joining a 41 K plan. The results indicate that automatically enrolled workers withdraw nearly half of the extra. The team managed to say compared with workers who left. At workers left to sign up for the retirement plan under two right now auto enrollment in retirement plans. Has become very popular among employers in an effort to address the crisis. The jets' difficulties. That people suck that money out. It is as quickly as they can. Another statistic after leaving a company. Just over 60%. Chuck 41 K participants would balances below 101000 dollars. Liquidate their accounts I just way that you work. First job your broke in your just put out. You know small amount in your four on Cheney leave it after two or three years 60% of those people are cashing in. This plan and in I've talked to a number of people who have done this you know 'cause I I. He appears here daily wearing my age do this you know they they were in a place for two years and say GM got 4000 dollars and 41 K. Really wanna go to Thailand on the hill that money and I can use that to go to time to have an experience or you know they might say oh gee you know why I need to Bob by new car gonna pull that out and use that to buy new car. There's a few different problems now OK number one lot of people don't understand how the tax code works as a they don't know they're paying a 10% penalty. And NF I've talked in these new people who were being generally Smart people know. They just don't know how works and I think we do a really bad job educating. People on exactly you know what that the costs and benefits are the they send you you know whenever you're pulling out money from a 41 K they send you like twenty page thing. In say read this and you know be aware of the time periods when reads it would there have been studies that show the more disclosure you give the less people read because they just get tired and assemble to Mike I can't I don't understand it's too much so number one is education number two. Humans are really really bad planning for the long term you know they if if you talk to a 23 year old if you go back to talk to yourself about retirement point three do you listen I'm never gonna retire. He can't envision yourself more than 50% ahead of where you are now so if you're 23 years thinking. You know maybe you're thinking out too when your in your forties. The problem is when your 45. Is when people really start to say yeah I need to start planning for my retirement. And in many instances at age 45. It's getting close and too late in in in one of the best tips that I found in terms of conceptualize and that is stopping about retirement terms in years and you tell someone else five years away now they say 05 until I have lots time. If you start thing about in terms dates and it makes it more real if you say gee you've got 16100 days until you retire now. Wow that's definitely that's a real number and make a radical suggestion that I'd be curious as to what you. Gentlemen think about it as it this doesn't impact that if you're fifty years old and you haven't saved for retirement your soccer tournament. But you guys are in your thirties you've got. Friends that are cashing in the retirement plan you've seen you yet reserved. What if you change the law is right now it's it's legally you can get in their take. Right you and say hey I am I've got an emergency I want cash in that place what are you just saying change along once you put money into an irony. You cannot take it out until you're 59. Period. Because the money is protected from bankruptcy. Right so why would what if the government said. You cannot. Touch that Miley don't care if your house is on fire. You cannot. Tap your retirement because it used to be that way it used to be you. 1960s. You couldn't cash in your retirement plan is it was a pension belliard was a monthly check. It is its top electoral loss where Adam. You know it is and it isn't because on one level SAG I don't really want a subject people to the loss of liquidity in the ability to access those funds. But counterpoint is look if you want access to funds don't put in a retirement. You know so. It is that you would Kurt eat do you think. If you did that you just eat once you put that money into your higher rate you couldn't access into your 59 and a half do you think people would contribute less to and hiring. Yes you do yes same thing with a forecast yes. So the the question I think people have good intentions. I think they just. They get tempted by buying a second house and attempted die while we need new car the attempted. Joseph and help my kids with their college tuition and I think that's why they indeed they're placed I think if you said to them hey app you just can't get it. You used this retirement crisis would largely away I think I don't think you'd in it I don't think you would impact on the to put in your world okay you're not put money in your 401K thinking wanted to take that money out payment kids' college no but I do this from my job. Now. You know what you think tiger does make it illegal to take the money. I kind of improbable freedom and now they you do libertarian in your bathroom yeah that's why I get it I just. I I just wonder how bad the retirement crisis has to get before that type of decision is made that the bigger issue is still. In my mind not the people who tapped you know of the these funds early then but people just don't save anything to begin. Up next we'll have the answer and we'll name the winner of our trivia contest were also covering a story that would allow you to vote. From your Smartphone that's next on the when he talks to. No privacy is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange in. One of talked a little bit about how to invest any rising interest rate environment the Federal Reserve has raised rates twice already this year. The most likely projection two more hikes over the remainder of the year and Mike. Let's talk first with bonds when we talk about bonds in conventional US Treasury's. How'd they tend to move as rates go up. Well that they tend to be in adversely correlated the price an abundance embers that correlated to the interest rates prevailing interest rates that are out there in this generally make sense you know if if interest rates go up and suddenly you can go by that same bond that's paying higher rate of interest that the price of your bond is going to be less valuable this gets inflated the longer term than bondage so if you have a ten year bond. That price impact is going to be a lot more significant than a five year. So effectively that the part of your portfolio that you typically think to be safe money and most stable. You might have to make some adjustments in order to make sure you're not losing principled during this time if you have the intention of selling as rates are going up. That's absolutely correct and if you haven't made those adjustments already this year you've likely seen in impact to your bond portfolio. Specifically when retirement that you wanna take a look at what's called the duration of your bonds. And make sure that you know it's just at least in line with the overall marketplace and you understand the impact of rising interest rates on. You know we're talking about. The retirement crisis and it's a problem do you you have friends that are retiring with little or no money saved 617 rights. Eric started at forty years old post divorce I was broke. And now at age 62 have got over 700000. Dollar saved for retirement by being incredibly frugal and disciplined well. I get Italian 617 you are the exception not the rule at age forty start that that's pretty darn good 978 writes in this is an answer to my question. People will not contribute to their 401K plans if they cannot access it. That is sad. Because he should not be putting money into your diaries in India for one K plans. With a plan to access those funds I think there'd be a lot of rebellion against that initially. But I think long term. Effect of saying you just can't take the money out of your diary we don't care if your house is on fire. You cannot monitor your dying you cannot take the money out here so. I thought of something. That might. It works compromise here. Would be kept current diary exactly out is to put money and in you can take it out paid 10% penalty if you're below 59 and a half whatever you want. You have another kind you can call a super hire whatever you wanna call I don't know what you're gonna naymick is not good at. But you put the money in there you can't touch at all to 59 half suits your lawn is a lock on it's it's locked in there and people say why would I do that. Because instead of just being able to duck to deduct a 100% of what you put in deacon did a 110%. Duke gives you a bigger deduction then but yeah but the cost of that. Is that you lose liquidity until age 59 and a lot. I love that I think that we give people option that's an incentive as opposed to mine which is a punishment right this this it's look if you want to get a bigger deductions allowed. Will give you a bigger one but you just can't touch them and at. There's a Boston based company. Timmerman name the company and its and it it provides folks VOA TZOK. And it's and allows. For you to vote via your Smartphone for absentee ballots and where it's being tested is in West Virginia. And where you don't worry if it's gaining popularity the whole concept of it is for military person yes. Who were deployed overseas there in remote locations can't vote. They say okay great at least yup Wi-Fi on the base boom you can send it out no problem and you get everything done that I want you know the whole concern about though. Most of the system could be hacked right yep by. I I get that and I think you obviously have to do a whole line of legwork in order to. Safeguard these systems. But I love anything that makes it easier to vote pile of anything that you know. The fact that in here here's what's actually think about EA we're talking about military personnel but think about the elderly. The confirmed the handicapped the busy you know like there if you are honest with yourself. How many times have you not voted you say it but he didn't vote because. They drove by the voting station in the line with half an hour the exactly. And so I I love this idea not the security of obviously is is a big piece that needs to be addressed. I thought they had this encryption stuff for like that is similar to the critic credit cards so that. You know by yeah America confidence so they they can't and here's why so. If you look at how apple built their facial recognition platform from. Everything there is stored on your phone so when you go and and mean you've got the new iPhone ten cratered sought mentally you're thinking about Mejia. You look at that phone in it looks at your face it doesn't go to central databases. And say oh that's chalker alone that's vary it simply pulls directly from the phone that part of the phone is not networked at all it's not connected to really be acts that. With this you have to connect to a central database that it was don't know who some years. And so. It's never going to be as secure as what apple built simply because he has to make that link to the dean of a series voting fraud today. Is this is like people say well there's going to be voting for OK let let's assume there's been. But is it going to be less voting fraud and curse today and right now voting fraud is rampant while it and I think you could actually use technology in this way to build a more secure system that's what I was in the long. So I love the idea that you you're busy greet you can show up to work in just vote on your phone you don't need to go to a polling place. And again their ton of people who were you know working multiple jobs and you know they've got in no way to get time off and units when he goes they'll be people would say no I I don't trust us today you know as as a means. It's for the security standpoint. They the same people that are saying that we should require identification. You know I I don't know again those those are questions that. It again until you get into the specifics however thing works. I really can't answer but I I think that you're going to see this become a bigger piece of the voting puzzle. Over the next 460 is just party on the phones all time now. Not their other photos part of it think about how crappy our turnout it's like Google election in in a presidential year. It's like 55 to 57%. Those are good number those are not in order to mid terms of the this ball and 3540. Know what mid terms usually are I. Pretty low I don't it I know it's in the thirties to forties but I don't know exactly where balls there is at a broad range but. I I'd I don't know where that normally falls. France. Is taking on cell phone addiction with the band of cellphones stalker in their school system good. Death I don't know prominent. Non. The the feeling is that children under the age of sixteen. Don't have enough. Restraint to stop using a zippy that's a bad way to put it in I think that turns people against it. I think we just say look we don't let you be no smoke dope in the classroom we're not gonna let you you know look at your phone in the lake. It it's not you're there to work now you're there to or you're not there to play games on your phone and there'd be on snapped chatter FaceBook or whatever. Is there an award means to say that. OK so he can have your phone but most of the classrooms. Kids have their laptops and their tablets but does that same thing that texting on their social media so what a lot of schools do actually now is they actually have laptops or tablets that they assign kids for the year in the air restricted in terms of what they're able to do want them. So he could go on its two grammar and exit snappy pacer Warner democratic permissions and everything like that and there's ways around it any year any schools locally duties Steve thank Ivan heard about public school or public high school in new Englander Florida it's doing a similar charter schools do in this. What are they saying just so here projector phones or would actually do is they have the is cases that you put your phone and when you come into school that lock the phone in the case for the day. And so it's you you walk in and there's like a box that you put them in a pretty much you know and then when you're leaving you go and get your phone on the way out. And I think it's beautiful because it takes it it takes any any ambiguity out of the equation you know it's not just kids had this problem. We're adults it. The this is a problem problem through society go to a restaurant. In just a program. Goes totally. A get together gathering. Party you'll see people over in the corner maybe twenty people at a cocktail party. In the B five over the corner there I was out for the last two weeks right. We're at dinner just about every night and we look around. And you'd be hard pressed to find when table but didn't have someone on their phone. I've gone out to dinners seemed a couple. Supposedly going at the dinner together and they're both on their phones yet. It's like if they voted I talk to each other all in any look at me if you wanted to do that stay home I'd just the gators different strokes for different votes. Banks are finally. It'll time. Banks are finally starting to pay interest on departs. Starting to and it's it's been a long time coming but you are now seeing with the last fed reserve rate hike him. You're starting to see some of that pastor in particular the online banks. Are really good in terms of what they're actually doing now on savings and money market accounts you've got some now. That are up close to 2% and I know that Barclays on line is paying 185. Marcus which is a Goldman Sachs product is it when he five. Ally financial's one need American Express is 175. A lot of online ones or are pretty significant. If you look at the you know kind of in his this is the big banks the Bank of America the the Citigroup JP JPMorgan. They are still significantly below OK they they're not paying out anywhere near that. People are switching is looking at the amount of deposits going to some of these online banks that you went from four it's still meager but it went from like 4% to 6% or notes is some some of the CDs that you're seeing out there now also yeah. Are starting to get attractive also I'm seeing two year ones now that are at 275 to 3% in and what gets it's not great. It's not all in the broad scheme of things and seeing one years now. Up around two and a half percent non if you wanna go out five years you can get north of the arena he still can't get back to you know 4% of the foreign half the people loved in you know that the people had back. In 20072008. But 3% is. You know it's interesting too is a listener told me. Do you handle a lot of money sitting in a local community. And he went and you know he looked at their published CE OECD rates yep wouldn't talk the branch manners and lucky CD rates are very good I'd go. And and you know across the street and get another 1% they matched it. Today. I didn't know they had that authority to be necessary to negotiate like the talk your local banker remember same thing when your borrowing money Lotta times the unity you're doing and a small business loan. You think all they're gonna charge me 7% of the bank cross streets can charge you six ask. Ask you can't do in our task then they when we come back. We're gonna talk about a CEO. Joining us on the line now is Tim Stephens from CNET Rocha here and talk about the 2019. Dodge Challenger Tim thanks for coming on. Our Jim we're good what's so what's new with the 2019 challenger any any big upgrades or changes from the prior year. More horsepower that the big deal in the new a challenger helped had to recognize this is the new 797. Horsepower flavor of the challenger takes a lot of parks from last year's Dodd Eamon. Which was the special edition 840 horsepower challenger. They only made thirteen hundred of those and I believe they're all gone now to bring a lot of spark down to look at quitting again as read our version with 709 and. So 797. Horsepower it's a lot it's a whole bunch of them. Helped her is that. It is really really quick problem actually is that it got so much power that you can actually get bad down. And on the road because there's more power and traction even look at what one inch. Tired of the rear out still need more grip and got beaten to 160 in 3.4 seconds into the quarter mile in about eleven seconds that's about a second slower than demon. But the demon was running out drag radial and these are on renewable arsonist together a mystery but if you're not careful we want this thing you'd go in the debate on this. How many of these is making this year. I don't make as many people wanna have this is an option package that you can get on the challenges of it is not limited. Our arts are about 59000 are so it's a premium of about ten grand over the debate helped at war again about an extra eighty or ninety horsepower so. As many as as people want to go build a sell on average about six or 7000 challengers overall per month. Probably small sent that would be. And what what's the price range from the based challenger all the way up to while the top line one. Big challenger at six he started 27000. Dollars that's just overall nice scoop by not who 2000 horsepower to talk about but spoke quick constable a nice looking car as well I can step up from there to the real prodigy he was just 29000 dollars. All wheel drive we don't endorse morbid if you wanna get into the hillcats minimum price there is 58000. Dollars that's for the 717. Horsepower labor that helped at. The red I would do the or 4797. Or arrogant 69000. You're gonna pit box. Jim so obviously the these cars can fly might my question is in terms drive ability let's see if if you're in a you know an irregular commute stopping go traffic here on the highway and you know someone's you know look at their phone and you're going twenty miles an hour. These cars hold up during that time to draft. Current and surprisingly nice to drive out on the road if you don't get too far in the and again especially driver be easily go to the kind of thing that you need to necessarily worry about being the target every stoplight again after little picture on the ball. The suspension is adapted to go from a so upsetting to a sperm setting. And so it can be again quite comfortable there even recruit and on the highway the only problem really is that they did in the be quite loud or talk my big BH a new things you wanted to. If you're on the Howard prolonged conflict or draw a little bit which does get a little bit annoying but they've got great sound systems are among crank the ball in all the more beaten product. Very good Tim thanks for the time we appreciate it. Tim Stephens from CNET Roche are talking about the 2019. Dodge Challenger including who the hell cat red. Version Microsoft CEO. Such ya know Della just sold almost 13 of his common shares in the software company as the stock trades injury record price of a 108 dollars and 45 cents a share. I look at this is being a very bearish sign for Microsoft. What are your thoughts got to buy a house and we defeat. That's a lot shares that's a big hopes and vote so he's 35 million dollar house and at that. I I would effort for a tech executives that's middle road but I and I agree and I've been critical of Jeff Bezos for selling his shares for year. And I'm sure he wishes he hadn't because the stocks on no we have wild since he he's been doing it every year. I I look at this on the part of such as as a bearish sign because. In a equated to you know my own little company I've never sold shares in my company a Paula Dunne is reinvestment company yet he selling shares in micro so. Yeah I mean I think that part of it is he still does have assumed he he's selling. A third of his common shares he still has significantly more in restricted stock that he can't sell right now and a lot of options and yes so ease realistically out of everything he has he's trimming about 5% off of all of the shares actually. So it's if if he sold 30% of everything he had and Microsoft. I'd say it's a huge red. If you know this is similar to what we see from Bezos of what is it now you know yeah I the stock's up 50% standards like elegant it's like look like the guys you know you wanna take some of that play with the eight -- code or somebody they call it insider selling the reason. They do now they do that. They had the Dow has turned negative Dow's down 87 points the S&P is down five. Not sure exactly why gold down seventy air oil's down seventy cents a barrel Tuesday.
