This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Ilan mosque. CEO Tesla is added again. And this talk rallied yesterday we'll talk about what he said and why it has such a positive impact on the stock and we're also gonna consider. Did he break the law. With the tweet that he sent out yesterday. Hi everybody it's very in my with you here it is a Wednesday morning and Tesla shares buckled late yesterday afternoon and surprising. Everybody including me. Surged by 10% based on a tweet that the CEO sent out they did there should stop trading for a little while you know let the market catch up with the news. You want must tweeted out yesterday that he is considering taking the company private at 420 dollars per share. Not bad 20% premium Paris trading that day. And the last line that. Tweet was financing secured meaning me is to take can be proud again a year and you have to come up with sun eighty billion dollars a year to buy all the shares and take that company private and he claimed in that tweet that that was already secured and ready to go on that news the stock jumped up. 10% because. You know presumably wasn't a joke well in and it's still true today he them the markets saying. Is that it probably won't happen because the stocks trading at 379. And he said the offer was for twenty share that sets a forty dollar price difference. From where we are today. So if the market was very confident that this would occur it would already be they did that sock yeah there and now let's just talk about. Why this is a big deal there and maybe it means people don't understand it but generally speaking when you have big news about this. About it publicly traded company. A it doesn't usually come out in the middle of the trading day sometimes it does have its really urgent news it can't hide today leaks. But usually it's not announced by the CEO on social media website then. That's an area extraordinarily. Rare in place but it's changed in its day times have changed in the last year's unit two and he wouldn't it done this twenty years ago but Twitter didn't exist twenty years ago that's just the the president. Has his has transformed. The the rules of the game. Certainly he's he's broadcasting with the you know that we're gonna use it to good jobs report the morning before comes out yet. Okay does remind me a lot of president transactions when they're very similar that there are other ways to go about it though he should have gone the route of you know leaking it to the media. Really a day here Tesla might be one to go private. Whereas it's coming directly from his mouth and raises a ton of questions ethics. A pro from what standpoint on the abilities as long gonna go private one average for Taiwanese air edges like matches remind. Favorites of all that stock Le appeared none the unity. That's okay to do that and lake city that what you're talking about is he pumped up the stock yes. That sport and you don't like late in any pumped up the stock price by 10%. Now. That in itself would be illegal if he'd been subsequently. Sold stock pump and dump right so Dennehy he saw the pump right. And now we have done it loud we don't know right Ricky hasn't yet. Or does he use this. Increase in the stock price because we we are of the opinion that he needs cash he's burning through cash very rapidly. He's accounts payable. Are excessively high. And so. When you mean when you look at his actions you say well yes he pumped it up to 380 bucks and actually the stocks turn positive today so it's 380 dollars a share. Would if he were to go and issue new shares now at 380 dollars I I think you have to question. With that would be. You know part of the of the dump especially if it's found that there really was no effort. To go private and if the it's found that there was not in fact any financing. That would be that would be the caveat here that would really and in some trouble if he has not in fact reached out to earth aboard as non fact reached out to find answers to you know. At least show an effort to secure financing. And that was just yeah. Keep in mind this is the same CEO that back on April Fool's Day we did that. You know Joseph rent copy going bankrupt and a argue I don't know whether that's a joke here for Barack. It. Jason how much money. But it would appoint and I think he doesn't necessarily need to profit from the price manipulation. Yet his goal is to manipulate. The price. Just you know as he loves getting back and all the people shorting the Stockton in if he was intentionally manipulating the price. Just because you wanna Ted you know make a bunch of other people lose money you know that is also stock market manipulation is also illegal he doesn't need to personally profit from now. The the board of direct. Yours did acknowledge this morning that the he had been in these conversations for the last week. And they have reached out in the east they claim that they've got financing now the difficulties. You've got financial journalists. All over there the world that are following the story saying. T who do we deal that might be investing in visited Chinese sovereign club members he plays it's opened a facility in China writes those China sand. How will will will buy this whole darn company though you know how do we feel about that as a country. Win you know week finance do you remember tussle is financed by a Barack Obama. You Yury Barack Obama loaned. Tussle 500 million dollars when nobody else would. Nobody would touch this note that was subsequently paid back but. My point is you know is China is such a member Saudi Arabia just invested two billion dollars added in Tesla stock. So yeah I mean it is possible that they do you have the financing there are a lot of B institutional investors in here. I'd get really worried about this or team based on mosques. History with Twitter based on the fact that he has in the past sent out tweets that have not been perfectly ground in fact. And you mentioned the board coming out only six members of the board have actually confirmed that they've been having these conversations so it's not been unanimous statement from the boards AM were all like you're doing those. So James Murdoch by the way on the board and he is when guys signed off so he's no dope. James Murdoch would understand the liabilities associated trip with. With this. I think if that's the case and why is in the stock move. Only it moved the law yesterday in this not unusual to see forty dollars Brad on this kind of a deal with skepticism. About the fine teacher now with all the sudden I'll tell you what. If Goldman Sachs comes out today. And says yeah we've been working on this and we arranged fifty billion dollar for the financing your seed stock to open when he wouldn't be envious. Surprise when what about the actual move itself if they do go Oprah is that a good play reality being. If you're talking I've got friends that are. CEOs. Of public companies and or worse CEOs of public companies. And it's terrible because they shareholders are on you every ninety days right ye you have to hit your numbers. Every ninety days. CEOs much prefer to be in a private company situation because they can take a longer term perspective you only go public. Because you have to go public. You don't go public because it's a better way to operator company frankly. Being public one could argue is a worst way to aren't you run your company because you have to think on such short term basis you know. That every quarter your being judged and your stock price Michael is your currency rate and if you if you have a bad quarter. Why just look at GE they've had a number of bad quarters and an idea they've had a lot in Allen and all the sudden it's a tough environment acted so. I can tell yet Ilan mosque in and Tucker I I would for venture to say. Nine 95%. Of CEOs of publicly traded companies if they were asked a non us anonymously and in pride it. If they would rather be CEO of a private company in its they'll eat nobody. Liked being the CEO publicly traded company it other than for the financial benefits are in touch stress. Well you just eat you can't think five years out there that's the challenge threat you've got to think OK what am I gonna do today. And if it's a tough tough way to do business. It is a yeah so back to the fact that in itself in the fact that Ilan must read this news out in the middle of the day. In and of itself is not so much an issue and to go further in previous press releases and in their legal filings. Tesla has said in the past that if you want to keep up to date on the company's stock they need to follow me on Moscow on Twitter so the fact that he did in this fashion in and of itself is not a crime. If there's not an SEC investigation the next thirty days I'll be shocked. I'll be very surprised they don't at least probably definitely look out there's gonna let their party look and attitude the enforcement people party are hurting looking. Nearly one half of Republicans say trump should have power to shut down the media. Even there really understand what this means I mean I guess on the surface it means that 43% of Republicans say that the president. Said the authority closed news outlets engaged in bad behavior. What does that do you forget. We forget that when you give the president this sort of power their might again be a different president in the future you wouldn't want that our that was by the thought I mean how would you the 43%. That voted that president trump should have the power to shut down the media. Does that mean if and Elizabeth Warren becomes president that she should happen as early hour closed down and the media when it that's the position right. Let's let us now is the that was the pole right. The if there are. I I guess maybe maybe it's only the power should be expert extended to president trop and not subsequent presidents. Well that's ridiculous if if if I try and get. It's a better understand the the only 43%. That's being big number that now it's alarming. Limit the idea of free speech don't owe Tony 1% of independent voters agreed that the president should have the authority to close down news out engaged in bad behavior so again this poll was not should president trump it was should the president of the United States our ability to close down media outlets because of quote unquote bad behavior. It reminds you that whole Alex Jones you guys been following that I'll press column. Nobody like a lot of well a lot of social media F FaceBook and emirate as well as there's a lot of things like people shutting down the batting and this that the problem is. What's happening is his downloads are actually increase should there be it is being committed against her around it's good for his business again different you know. You have a private company in deciding what type of users they want to their platform. And what type of news they want going on right verses people saying they want to give the public. Elected president in the right to shut down news media out. How else ridiculous well let's let our audience Utley and yes that is our poll question today First Amendment. Emotional forget that exciting but don't worry about the First Amendment oh yeah obsolete the first one says Berry Canadian. The fifth but who. You don't worry about that stuff in Canada. Do you think the president. Should have the power to shut down the media that's our poll question you can participate in our poll. By visiting our website which is financial exchange. No. Everybody it's very Armstrong NG to Jay is the executive vice president at leader bank. And we're here to talk about a brand new product available for landlords it's called Z deposit dot net Jake. What. Barry we created a security deposit product. To really help the problem a lot of blame border facing with security deposits which is. You know one it's time consuming to open the small enough security upon number sons now. And yet to go into the bridge yet signed paperwork in their small dollars and Andy turn. And it's likely to complaints in Massachusetts really tough for landlords and security deposit accounts. You have to give them ten in certain forms when they open up the count and you have to pay interest and you. And we should do all this canal through Z deposit all of that you can do Thursday deposit it literally takes about forty seconds to open up an account. We handled the automatic forms that are generated the account number department commission statement all that said lieutenant. And the interest descent of the tenant automatically every year. This sounds like something it's going to be very valuable to large landlords it might have 200 tenants and small landlords that might only have five tenths yeah absolutely with a large landlords. It's just a lot of hassle to managed so we make dad very efficient. For the small landlords a lot of them are afraid of nineteen complaints done correctly so some of them some of them don't even like taking security deposits were hopeful that this up and do that. Folks if he'd like to learn more about C deposit go to their website Z deposit dot net. Or you can call and speak to somebody on disease deposit team it's 7816418691. Missed on earnings but they're studio revenues up 20% the stock today. Down a dollar nine DN 114. Dollars and 66 cents a share. You know Disney has just discontinued story of a pretty good studio pretty good new movies coming out that are doing generally well I mean you can argue that they were it was a bit much but. The problem of the drag is they have this giant ESPN business which is just hemorrhaging via. They they've cut costs there and they've got the ESPN up. Yeah I think the question is it is that going to take off and all the cord cutting going on news and views about five million people a year coming quarter. I haven't watched ESPN and probably year now. Starter Jeremy Tucker you is he now sports a lot more than half how frequently do you watch ES. Enough frequently unless there's a game on an idol I don't watch any use the sports senators say go to my palates and YouTube. I don't watch any of their courage programming. And you're gonna does a lot of sports report ray you're so in this area involved in this you down never tuning into the SP. The Imus this Cornel on penalties faith that it's pretty cool. It reminds me of Wal-Mart does need us. And I say that in I compare Wal-Mart. As to Amazon and they completely missed the boat. In terms of competing with Amazon gift in Disney is completely missing the boat competing with Netflix ten years ago. Disney could of bought Netflix first song. S open a blockbuster and ever wondered about Netflix for us on a decade ago and everyone missed the boat on that. Fifty now they're coming out in their big plan going forward is we're gonna have a net streaming product within a launching their streaming product until next year. And they are solely to the dance. And you know Bob tiger's been the CEO of the company for a long time I I would give him an ID assign responsibility. For that missed opportunity to Bob Iger. I need to end. I just. I do not understand one B it why Disney continues to audience here. On the fact McCain get a good price for yeah I don't know who the heck they were Celek tube it used to be the crown jewel five years ago Michael Disney. The crown jewel via does he was ESP in after the main element and you think about it I mean Disney is a company that year but we all know what they're famous for and they're really good at selling you know. Little toys that go along with all their movies they're no good at delivering up their kind animated films that people want to see it shows that kids wanna watch and hear the theme parks and all it's a degree that it. Then they have this standalone ESPN sports business that has nothing to do with everything else that they do now nothing AA it's completely un related. There's no synergies that I see that he can't have your people your creative people from Disney isn't going over to ESPN but they operate that they studio break ESPN's operated at Bristol Connecticut put in the time honestly I agree I just. When I see that to two different business is doing two completely different things that have no way to leverage each other's resources you know I just. It seems like a waste of money now but it will show and spun off. 510 years ago it's still look darling of Wall Street eat if you a lot of investors still like it players they're buying you know some of the box assets. Bob Iger still you know highly respected I idol beat. He deserves the credit that he's receiving because I look at the missed opportunity. And I and the and the amount of time people spend watching Netflix and it's based on Netflix has taken over the house. I'm really curious to see how Disney's. Creates their streaming. Application in effect and actually compete with the Netflix and Amazon and who lose of the world you mentioned Amazon it's under the gun their there're two source and ams almost 98 they're improving by the week maybe they get better you know. Two week two years ago I thought the Amazon prime product for video was terrible I mean that's plus better by the week Netflix was terrible if you're call when I first came on streaming as awful. Who has it all. And in Tennessee I mean I've. You know my kids are not quite at the age are watching TV shows and movies but it's a private in the next eighteen months. Were going to be yet there and I'll be very Ecstasy you know if I wanted to cut the election to wish I'd had an. If does the I'll be watching YouTube with your kids today. But I I. I'm wondering if maybe I don't need that as an application. If it's something that I've really we'll field you probably and I don't want to pay for kids or if you know because of our subscribe and Amazon. And they do you have a lot of kids show content that's going to be enough. I would prefer to just stay with Amazon and say forget that an election in other fees ten are supposed to Disney just in my kids' shows that. I think Disney's gonna make their product very affordable. Yet as the tees they champion Sampras is Netflix or they're not going to lose her I think they didn't like 799 month they have a huge continent lifers to NATO unity they're content library. Is the largest in the industry unity in you think about all the old Mickey Mouse shows that they have been all the products that they have available via a bit. They'll be a formidable competitor is just that the solely to the dates there I think that's what might these criticisms. That there are solely to the dance becoming upward or take a look at snapped Jack and Vertex the Dow down 57 points the NASDAQ is off eleven. Time now for my whole street watch a look at the market's performance so far today thanks to Barry and jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. So markets are down a little bit but snapped chat and Papa John's pizza are both from the news Papa John's. Not for good reason as a Papa John's ige reported earnings I needed. Obviously a big issue at their company with Garcia being ousted or technically resigning over the racist comes in a conference call. All the John's health five cents a share short of estimates adjusted quarterly profit of 49 cents a share revenue missed forecasts comp store sales miss forecast that fell six point 1%. 710%. Drop in the current quarter really boasted this being attributed to the pop Jones owner John snatch natter and Dan just the negative. Mean David game because that the stock is down 30% year to Dayton and often additional 3% and you'd think he'd be Smart enough to do shut up and go away in and take its money the only surety for shareholder now. And me is apparently not if he would just go away maybe he thinks he can turnaround that obviously he thinks he can. Turn it around a table just have made him. Very large view yeah. He's not wrong. Snapped chats. Also pretty negative earnings report they lost there. Lawsuit just fourteen cents a share were to actually. Better than anticipated revenues beat forecasts as well but the average daily users number fell. So people actually use in the app is down witches really all that matters feast at the company's stock down almost 7%. Then jobs still very much stroke company was announced the Saudi prince Turkey two point. She 215 million dollar stake in the company which about 2.3 percent of its outstanding shares are up and support the stock. That'll do about it. Tucker 43%. Of Republicans. Say that the president of the United States should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior now we ask that of our audience what percentage of our audience. Thinks it should be in twenty action a truck twenty point 6% of our audience. Thinks that the president so. I wonder if they would feel that way if Barack Obama exactly where they'll present exactly would you feel that that you 20% that are saying yes shut down the media. Elizabeth Warren the next president you OK with that right. Bet you that this is an about trump. It's about the position as the president of the United States and that's in our First Amendment amendment when he percent is way too much one of our listeners Debbie. Chimes in on the text line are you in Texas with the your thoughts on this comment as well tech's number 63566. Remember to put my first name at the beginning of your tax. Debbie says yes I think he should be shut down on the media they are the cause of bad behavior. The B create rage and operas there's going to be speaking of the media to I think the media need to wake up call. Put the president introduction and welcome to Seattle to Q1 shut them out I think no president has done a magnificent job. Calling media bad behavior and you know frankly all use sometimes he's wrong. But sometimes he's right up on this Brady he's caught is that right he has caught CNN for instance in massive lies and and bad reporting an ABC immediately if. It's a Seattle pick. And you know and and prior to him and Twitter right. Nobody called these guys right there are better ways to. Deal with this problem too I mean you better reason than shutting down chatting counts armies in the United States we have. One of the most difficult to enforce libel laws in the budget it's like the most difficult libel law in the world to enforce you have to prove that the person that was. Not only line but their line with the intent to harm the nurse. You have to prove all that are to be guilty of libel but that's not the case in most places and candidates and much. Different situation and not saying that we should go that route but if your of the position that presents real shut down media sites. Maybe a better way to handle that is saying OK let's just tighten up or libel laws so that somebody. Is intentionally line whether or not meant to harm somebody. Then you can you know and the suit that purse. Another thing is I think the meted needs don't wake up call in terms of creating headlines or even stories. Registered drive klux. I'm in ratings you know I think it's very much driven in the social media world especially neo. I think in the I I think they're getting. The message to do and the AD because title there we'll look at subscriptions packer look at ratings and you know people. People now can be very specific as to where they get their news from there have to watch the 5 o'clock news in order to find out what's going and back. Look at how few people watched the evening news. Relative to where was 3040 years go through and watch the evening news. And it's it's if it bleeds it leads pitchers like oh sad story sets or poppy sad story says set story weather sports and after. Like a burning house burning house yeah. Yet that's your lead and just off as just so sick of it and the news totally different format and get back to journalistic integrity 978 rates vary on the trumps her. Who totally disagrees while the media may be messed up no president should close down media outlet. Free speech rules thank units and I think Cuba set it's any use summed it up. As well as it can be summed up you can participate in the poll or send us a text website address for Paul participation. Is financial exchange showed a com. There may be listening stare probably retired are getting close to retirement age so be taken time to think about what happens if you or your spouse gets sick and need nursing home care what would you do if your spouse didn't have enough money to live on because you're in nursing home in depleting your assets by thousands of dollars a month. Hi everybody it's Berrian talked with you here with a quick tip from the legal exchange showed doc common. Todd I wanted to talk to you about the five year waiting period for Medicaid eligibility. As it applies to the use of the medic and a light the state so let's say I Cree I give my house away. I give it to the kids. Is that five year clock start ticking I'm if I've done elect the state yes so if you're taking your house and many people do this if you take in your house and transferred to the children. And reserve the right to live there you know does that create a five year Medicaid I would absolutely it to and that's the definition of collects right giving your stuff away. Give it away but you you do reserve that right to live there so that's at least something that you're keeping which which is certainly helpful to you must pay the property taxes and maintain the property. The property taxes and maintaining is all done by the life Tenet but you know. But I I want to stay on the five year waiting period just for minute because so many people think that it doesn't apply even to the life as they arrangement like you mentioned very. And also too when they make kits you hear people I can give 141000 dollars a year away because I I can do that and not pay any gift taxes. That's true. That's an IRS regulation. You'll pay any gift taxes but you will have a five year waiting period. For Medicaid eligibility so it does apply to almost all transfer some including. A life for state arrangement. So yes it does apply. All right folks Cushing and all and is making a brand new guide available and it's very helpful for those of you who are thinking about giving your house who use like the state compares the advantages and disadvantages. Don't let strong second quarter economic growth and the stock market rebound from all of the big selloffs earlier this year fool you. This isn't the time to put new money into stocks had dubious trades on or own stocks on margin there may be trouble ahead. The author of that paragraph as mr. Michael brush for marketwatch.com. And brush up on stocks dot com. Mikey sounds like your little worried about the market. Well. Yeah you know. It does look dirty you know I mean it's important to remember that nobody ever predict what it. Men. That you can identify. Risks are elevated and I think that. OK talk to us about it some of the things that you have are concerned about one of them is. Rich sentiment. Right. Dietary look at two things try to make you know risk assessment and always look at. Senate. Try to watch what crowded. It's tough to get it senses sentiment. Look at about two and indicators. And read them. And it's come and a little bit in the past several days but people still early election that's not agreed to it because juries want. You know there are fewer people left by starts Super Bowl ring and each day and two. You know people were overconfident. Prize but that right. You reference is one of the indicators you look at the vick's because I noticed I think yesterday it was it ten. Fixes to the next aspect. And it didn't vote for. We go to some other users aren't there. World one that's it that's very relevant I think it is labor shortages. And we we need to talk about that because you have companies. If the logistic companies as an example. That are turning away business because they can't find drivers you've got airlines that are canceling flights because they can't find pilots. I learn it even got construction companies turning down jobs because they can't find workers I think the labor shortages probably the best point you making your article by at least that's my opinion. Right. Get historic average of close loop on the big pictures or sentiment plus marketing. Nabbed. Sets or when. When market Brett is now and there are a lot of start participating in strength. That's that's early signing a breakdown so what you see that combination senate. Weren't. That's never kind of they're now but not quite so yep it's important paper shortages mean the economy has just continued long. You know from the Obama strength. And it's still years and and inevitably that judge wears down that they've. Made it it's on and so Chris skiers wage. Wage increases. Which. Mike totally why we haven't seen wage growth I looked at the last wage growth number was two point 7% year over year it's not a bad number. But with the you know with no unemployment with the jolts report that we looked at yesterday I I I say to myself. She wage growth should be an 044. And a half maybe 5%. Yeah yet that's an arching question we have seen wage that it actually has been okayed it but that's just a question and been broke for. On time on now but yet that's actually question I don't I think. Partly because. You know there's a lot of older people in a paper worse and they and not ask for raises. Or in. A fair amount a lot of them are. Done and and another thing at distorts wage measures is that as older population rules are. And aggregate pay lowers BQ here people by definition. So Scott Muni issue but. I don't really know but I think that's gonna change I think it's gonna change and I think that's key as do labor market now very. You're worried about the trade war. Well you're you know I think trump is Smart enough not to get it all country world we kind of speed that is tactic is to luster and back off. And make a deal that cut it. In jail and still it's still escalating though aren't. Yep we'll see that's it thank. Even if he doesn't get it in a tree Warren. That the threats along where it that's going to be bad start. And I think I don't think where that's done. Yet these could be China now garbage. It. Well that's kind of the last one doesn't that defeat it works is it look there there's seems to be the writing on the wall Europe's gonna fall in line. Gonna get some kind of concession out of China. Canada a miner who cares. In and that that China is the big one. Right China. All he needs is a little something out of China and he can declare victory. Yes exactly I think that'll wrap up before the election because as you know the last thing trump wants is some architect. Q what works shoot paper it is a department that's. That's one. You know he sees the bigger. Well look at it that election last night in Ohio it looks like the Republican won that. Yeah I was very close. Was there was but it's still if he can get the economy. If you keep the economy strong. Through earn November. And in eight CI I see the re stumble like is I think you get something done on trade prior Labor Day. I I just think that's a Smart thing to do war may be it's it's the week or two after Labor Day but he wants to be able to. Gore on the campaign trail in September and say. Yup by I stopped the Chinese abuse and stop the European abuse were bringing jobs back to the United States economy strong GDP could be 5% I mean. Then bended knee I don't think you have an you're a lot of loss in the house knew prior to pick up seats in the senate. I think that makes sense that are about to liquidate. Developments with beyond that has been closed now. Now I egg I series or by Columbus Day. You know. Right yet at that. Are there. And I think the watcher is there. Aren't a lot of stimulus on army has already UK and that means. Act. And spending. This. That's not good I mean that sounds good near term. It's. A lot of the history sure it said that he'd economy which we expect that overreact with exception. And I think that's a big risk here and I think that many Europeans want money but I think it I think more people think about that it could be. Bergen Michael thank your for your time now Michael brush for marketwatch.com. Finally writes socialist countries shut down the media I don't understand why anyone would say yes can you elaborate on all the reasons. People gave who did say well. I folks it's chuck and Mike from the financial exchange and we're talking today about how to invest in. What kind of sector struggled when rates are going up Michael we talk about the interest for everything mortgages credit cards. Yes they are technically paying out a little bit more on CDs and bank deposits as well but they usually more than making up for that on the on the charges that they had to go when we look on the downside because as much as there might be good news in some sectors there's always another area that ends of struggling what parts the economy and what types of stocks might struggle. If rates go up well two big areas tend to be utilities and real estate on the real stateside it's pretty obvious if mortgage rates go lot -- people are going to be able to afford less real estates that makes sense utilities it's a little bit less obvious but effectively a lot of investors by utilities because they're seen as a replacement to CDs or bonds in some cases because their relatively safe investments when interest rates go up sometimes they sell those safe investments in favor of those CDs and bonds folks we've given you a couple ideas to think about with regards to how to invest in a rising rate environment but there's a brand new guide out from Armstrong advisory group and only up to you to get it is call 800. 393. 4001. This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong in chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news. Did. And now the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and shocks. Older Americans are. Those over the age of 65. Are going bankrupt at a record rate we're gonna discuss why that might be. Ross gonna take a look at what employers are doing in certain instances. To reduce health care costs then finally when I talk about why 43%. Of Republicans. Want the president to be allowed to shut down media outlets hi everybody it's Berrian might with you here it's a Wednesday morning. Shocking increase in the number of Americans over age 65. Filing for bankruptcy and really terrify since 1991 the rate of people age 65 and older filing for bankruptcy has tripled. The rate to not the number and rate the rate at which people are fine there's more 65 year olds then there worsen and back in nineteen annual purposely considerably larger number of them. You know the study points to a number of different pieces obviously health care costs are through the roof. Debt is much more common now for folks in their sixties. You know whether the house you know mortgage debt or student loan debt they take on for kids are great grandchildren I've seen instances Michael ware grandparents. Sign for student loans for their grandchildren. And in their grandchildren stiff. On on in terms of paying the money back he knew it I just like have very Chris Tucker Merry Christmas Graham by the way did you think of it. By the way Freddie is that this article is out of business insider and I think the distant trailer. Entire article is missing out on the big overwhelming. Piece of this which is in 1990. 43%. Of all private sector workers were covered by a pension. And when we talk about that we're talked about the type of pension that a teacher or police officer received warrants say. Robust monthly check back back in 1990 I have remembered like it was yesterday. I would meet with prospective clients are existing clients and they'd say yep I get. Thirteen hundred dollars a month from Social Security. And I get 2200 dollars a month from my point fingers union pension. So 43% of all those private sector workers and I'm a private sectors are not talk I'm tossed not talking about. Got teachers or anything else it private sector workers are covered by pension. I 2006 that number was down to 20%. And today that number's down below 15% of private sector workers being covered I've that is even lower than that State's fifteen persists. I've seen differ reports that say between twelve and fourteen. Percent indeed guys understand why. That happened to me that transition because it really occurred during your lifetime negated you know you guys were children when this began. And today it's very unusual to running to a client. Who's working today it's and and and going to receive a a private pension from their employer can understand why that all heard about to me it seems like news. Purely financial incentive on the B after the companies house are slightly worse yet the stock. I I remember. The talking to analysts. And before they would buy stock and we could use the tees IBM is in her ample. They would go to IBM's board of directors because IBM the CEO of IBM wants people to buy their stock is there that's their job as CEO of the company. Gather there at the Chief Executive Officer but largely be Ari salesperson for the currency and that stock. Well investors would go to that CEO and say. Look you've got this pension plans defined benefit pension plan we European promising to pay all your workers 3004005000. Dollars a month. We want you to get rid of that pension plan and if you get rid of the plan. Will buy your stock in there and therefore make the stock go up in about that those of the conversations on I'm putting it in. Very layman terms but those were the conversations occurring. Back in 1991199293. And they still occur today Michael. I mean it. For the stock owner but it makes a lot of sense these pensions are. Tough to administer now they're tough to predict their difficult to calculate. And their expense. When you have Americans living much longer. And you know you have very difficult times predicting what could be yet to back up all the money with interest rate sensitive turtles. They're difficult to administer admittedly they're tough. But I mean to me that's the biggest reason that people are bank are going bankrupt in retirement is because. Left to their own freshens most people aren't gonna put money into their four when they play well and ended at the challenge that today gates gets addressed his. When they do put the money forward to the unfortunate part is you're allowed to just take that money out and you know you put money into an higher rate in you can take the money out and that's what's happened I've seen. Friends neighbors. You know they get into financial trouble when their 52 in the cash in their 401K plan in order to pay the mortgage well it's great in the short term. But it's problematic when they turn 65 does it no money saved for retirement now. Big problem that I had and I don't think I I will tell you I don't think there is any. Reason to believe that defined benefit pension plans are coming back to private sector. I the day in and I don't know I don't know this problem gets any better for any I think a lot of our listeners correct got reactions can be well that's their fault they're in saving effort their retirement and that's. That's fair. But if we all have a lot of our you know years in retirement going bankrupt and it's a problem on and have to worry about him because that just means they're going to be going on. Yeah a government dole and rest between four. Employers are finding new ways to cut health care costs I saw the story about General Motors couple days ago. And I really admire what they're doing now is going to be problems associated with the but it would GM is doing. Is a big they're taking about 24000. Of their employees in Michigan. And they've gone to the Ford. Hospital system fort Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. And they. Negotiated contract directly with the hospital as opposed to using an insurance company yeah. It's it's uninteresting way to go and can insurance companies are probably shaking a little bit on this as well they should be yeah. Now say you're cut out a little bit the middleman you're getting rid of the middleman cost the downside is. Four if you're richer when his employers you're gonna have to go with. One of the doctors from one of these networks are gonna be pretty limited in terms of who you conceive for what conditions there. On the upside it should be considerably cheaper it's gonna save the companies about 900 bucks a year. Per employee when I was very surprised by him was that this year there you've seen the number of those high deductible health insurance plans just going up and know a lot of employers are pushing their employees on those yeah. This year we saw that dropped from 39% and 30% now. I had didn't think that we would see that number sir to reverse itself very very surprised me up nights every area pop I mean they're not terribly popular certain. Cannon on the surface it makes sense that they be dropping plans that. I just didn't think you would the financial incentive doesn't seem to make sense the it'll. This year a large employers can do this I'm not sure small employer can can do this but it what you're taught it to you take you out companies like it right yeah news. And even your your blue cross blue if you if you're you're taking the game because those those cost money to administer. In the unit the return date if you're wondering with the mark up is when you're buying your insurance through net. Or united health 20% after it's it's a 20% market that's what it's costing you extras supposed to be in it to go directly to the hospital yeah. I nearly one half of Republicans say trump should have the power to shut down the media I interrupted. Nearly half horn believe the president should have the parish. Of our audience thinks that the president should have that power. Meaning 79%. Tech Steward diaries 263566. And let us know what you think about the stories we discuss your team to the financial exchange radio network. Joined now by Dana hole from Bloomberg talked to us about I guess the 82 billion dollars circus that is Tesla these days. Dana thanks for coming on. Tell us about your take on you know between the came out yesterday what it means for Tesla stock and based on these sunny on mosques history. How serious should we be your treating this communication. Why it very seriously and Iran backed is that should expect the cost both tests and be back at what went public in twenty and based accidentally been pride and he has long. Signal that he wishes that have. Credit he has said that interviews as he and in the Rolling Stone profile that out last year. And I think and it you know what he's signaled yesterday that he's very serious about the question is. You're wearing getting money from because he said that you know financing or without any details haven't had any trees filings Billings. Authorities said oh yeah like we're onboard with this and we're gonna get and the money to do it in so. There's a lot of questions about you know who had you lined up in terms of support for the deal and what and global that the current barge shareholders a couple of you know I think the goal on what are they gonna cashed out because he's talking about. Allowing current investors to kind of stay in the private companies that inept and kind of separate fund and bill it is entirely clear how that would actually work. Raised on mad you know you have liquidity every six months and you can stay in investor as a private as a private individual shareholder. You know. I agree with you we need to take this seriously in spite of the fact that he must as a bit of history with Twitter and you know make some comments that are a bit out there. Usually when you have a deal like this you know being rumored about though you don't usually get some rumors about. Maybe that there is financing lined up already are aware that might be coming from it usually gets ready. Did you would hear about it from might. Help our private equity keep. Folks are not the rough it was in an unusual that they believe that it. The good news kind of broke on Twitter and yesterday it was the community because at first but at times reported that. Saudi Arabia and while I mean Saudi Arabia and Auburn while fine if he can like every reporter carpet company act. Yeah on bank account credit report claimed extra people thought it was a joke or twentieth reference. When talking about it on time attempt companies that state. And in the meantime tree tops those are roller coaster today you're seeing our market is that people can act how much. How many billions of dollars would be required and Il crossed the line and he's very science in orbit. Is it really hurts people update. And and if you bought likely that means her EST yeah. And investors know about this before he tweeted about it it means that the board is. Spain met discussions about the am weak but it. We haven't heard from investors haven't heard large investors area. Right. Now I mean it's basically why I mean let's talk about why he would want the company beat crime and public I mean there's good reason for it right. Expect Allen is likely that in mind that sort of quarter to quarter. Expectations of the public CEO it's not. He asked a lot of energy. Preparing for your calls now answered all the questions of Mino from as a sort of epic meltdown and maybe he's fine a lot of questions about the company's financials really yes and and he's. And short sellers that are betting at companies he he'll think that there can't be. That our work cut under attack from short sellers to our intern manipulating media and that. That and it opposite circuit and the like come to an. Email alternately yesterday. He said that they expect there to get much more operationally efficient company's credit that act they. Yeah I mean it does allow you to take much longer term approach and I appreciate that concerns me is that he seemed so. It ferocious torrent polish orders of his stocky man they really dislike I understood the NEC eats that your players. You look at the overstuffed story mean short. You know everybody's critical of mosque because of the way he's playing the game look at the shorts. You know they shorts third nod in this league. Dan appreciate you coming on a stain a hole from Bloomberg talking to us about Tesla and the I guess announcement on Twitter from me on must yesterday thanks in. It. Yeah. Look I don't have any love for the you know. People shorting a stock I think it's kind of a plea dirty pool if you don't notice short isn't it it's a guy Aron investor investment company. That will. Debt and buy options. At the company's gonna go down in price and then what they often do and it's been. Recorded industries ogle and he'll play it stories in jail. Cree falsehoods. That it's cause that stock to go down in price in their four making money right and I don't have any love for them but. If we're talking about incentives that Elon Musk might have to come out there is something false and that's one. That's what he has any CEO right actually the and he rents them yesterday I know guy who short list. Good friend of mine short tussle says he lost a lot of money after. And a that's you know eat it but he's not he's also not only selling. Use those balls rumors. Your jobs go unfilled. As the economy expands so we adults report yesterday. And we learned where a lot of the jobs shortages worker shortages. Are. Primary ones seems to be transportation AM and we've talked about this a little bit in the past specifically. Died trucking as having a lot of shortages that got it aging workforce that is just getting older or older. And you can lump it into the same group pilots and lot of retiring pilots and just being being shortage given the expansion which of the last decade or track. So let's start with truckers get the breeze today by 4%. From high enough. They see that clearly and on that that is see if things that I need. Take exception to read these reports and look at it and you'll see truckers associations our short workers anymore. Workers just need to pay a reasonable weight he's eighties workers. It's a tough job coming your way for her family for a long extended periods of time and if you're in that group as considering its record you're also in the group that can consider a number of other jobs in the same wage. That aren't gonna make you travel. Five days in what's happening use these trucking companies and logistic companies are turning down business as a result of the shortage of truckers again and you know when I go back to interview we did earlier concerns about the economy. This. Is not a not only is it the cost of labor going up but it's just the fact that. You know companies are turning down contracts because they don't have Lehman fail trucking tonnage was up seven point 9% in the first half this year compared him your shoes play new demand he would lot of shipments being made. And it's not a high barrier to entry to becoming truck you can get your license has has not stale and we have you have to. Get trained but he probably trained to beat within six to twelve months right firm and and these companies will now. Trained they'll pay you like you're going to treat. The other one is pilots. That pilot shortage is a bigger problem. Because they changed the law during the Obama administration changed the law in terms of how many hours you need in order to be commercial pilot. And you got a lot of old pilots were retiring and there is no pipeline of new pilots are not enough of a pipeline of new pilots coming through the system to take those jobs. Yet unlike other industries it's not something we can say you know. 64 year old pilot we're gonna give you another you know 101000 dollar raise it to hold on for a few years. You have 65 you can't be it commercial pilot is to sixty bump that up already. I I don't see them bumping it up again so. The problem here is you've got a very long runway at trains and it's not a great job next month we don't it is Tucker you don't pay. On the east it to be a pilot's fifty grand a year is a lot easier ways to make a small regional Diaz. Fifty year and there are sound a lot more but yeah it's a million dollar legal. The old days their rate in half million bucks a year. They coming up we're going to be doing trivia based on Richard Nixon. Bone up on your trivia knowledge regarding Richard Nixon because that's. Hi this is chuck and Mike from the financial exchange in. Wanted to talk a little bit about how to invest any rising interest rate environment the Federal Reserve has raised rates twice already this year. The most likely projection. Two more hikes over the remainder of the year and Mike. Let's talk first with bonds when we talk about bonds in conventionally US treasuries. They tend to move as rates go up well. They tend to be in adversely correlated the price an abundance embers that correlated to the interest rates prevailing interest rates that are out there in this generally make sense you know if if interest rates go up and suddenly you can go by that same bond that's paying higher rate of interest that the price of your bond is going to be less valuable this gets inflated the longer term than bondage so if you have a ten year bond. That price impact is going to be a lot more significant than a five year. So effectively that the part of your portfolio that you typically think to be safe money and most stable. You might have to make some adjustments in order to make sure that you know losing principled during this time if you have the intention of selling as rates are going up. That's absolutely correct and if you haven't made those adjustments already this year you've likely seen in impact to your bond portfolio. Specifically when retirement that you wanna take a look at what's called the duration of your bonds. And make sure that you know it's just at least in line with the overall marketplace and you understand the impact of rising interest rates on. Folks the Armstrong advisory group has put together a brand new guide titled how to invest any rising rate environment. It is free for you to get and only have to do is call 80393. 4001. Will be testing your knowledge about President Nixon so when I ask you this question you wanna text the correct answer to our studio. The number here is 63566. If you're new if you have not played before you must put my first name at the beginning of your text message. My first name is Barry BA. Our RY. Tucker here you go oh my number number oh yeah let's go. These India a big one so we go to number sixteen. Are allowed us our highest ever Korea answer sixteen America. Under which US president did Richard Nixon served as vice president. It I must also say. Only text once because we had somebody actually text 39 times yesterday one person that it doesn't improve your chance of winning no not at all sure I'm with it a 1000% clauses and bonuses to. My first name if you would bury. And under which US president did Richard Nixon served as vice president. Retail defaults I had you know. You we talked about in Toys 'R' Us going bankrupt circuit city bank sector GC JC Penney and they're putting us in good equipment and a lot of these stores are going back right I Sharpton. How many you don't think about it. It into you and all time high and it's not spreads and the ones that I was familiar with I've heard of nine west I hadn't heard of players are they filed for bankruptcy and hurt Claris Paula so as an every mall would have a Bon-Ton. Never heard a Brookstone was more recent and they were walking company Toys 'R' Us obviously Remington outdoor Chapter Eleven. And Osce I don't know them nor the Keiko. Brooke to geez get to cheese. Effort I think he'll still exist yet they are being bought out and southeastern grocers. To a hostile. Tops markets and so what happens to all of the use. The eaters when they go bankrupt the default on their beliefs and they're not paying the rent anymore so what is the if you're the owner of animal we do test. It is not a solution yet like you haven't do. Retail that's gonna come and take that space I mean in the last few years when you've seen them gamer plays with his a lot of restaurants and grocery stores take a look at. I think about it as grocery store near us up here in Natick Massachusetts they just had that. A big wegmans growth restored knowing there and that's been pretty popular but yet but you think about it it's. It. The I don't. The ball like he. Do for just think that's it that's just two Storey malls. It's kind of like it's a long walk to get your car right from when you are. Now it's as more convened an Oscar for Easter to all you got it's oh these are my via. They grocery stores could be a solution on net and fill up all the space because a lot of these retailers have. You know there are only taken up 2000 square feet let's not that's not photographers to. So what some of these mall owners are doing is they're filling up with on demand they co worker in office spaces which which does make a lot of sense you've got a lot of people these days. That can telecommute. But don't join us it would be working from home or can't work from earth can't work from home it would be absolute hell if I were to work from home reference in there. Do you would not be feasible. And so this makes a lot of sense today if you're gonna go look for somewhere that's. Good locations with lots of parking. Having office days in the malls might be a very good solution you know the coffee shop and their two liner I don't know but the party. News analysts said the stoppage and fine fine that a child supermarkets to provide you wanna be grossed out just walk through the food court all why would people. It's just people stuffing their faces with you know regional out chicken really bad and there. Really. And there. Again I mean I think these power in his basement cents I would use them. I would have I would absolutely use pay by the way couple people like speaker. Making a mistake on our trivia question it's not who served as. President Nixon's vice presidency it's under which US president. Did Richard Nixon served as vice president Richard Nixon was vice president room became president people are screwed this up. So our text number is 63566. Again my first name Barry at the beginning of the text. Get dressed every talkers your wife part of rent the room now remember isn't and a yeah Afghanistan deserve our viewers never done rent on I don't think she's her but really now most women on this and I. So effectively. It's actually I I love it because in the past when my wife had to go to. Wedding if you would go out and shop and sometimes irony expensive dress that we have to Wear Asia where that winning in and pretty much never Wear my wife buys three dresses. Turns them on tries Aman makes me and keeps them. And and tell us issue returned to let it. That mysteriously initial cause. Read the runway is a service guys entirely booted directed toward and you rent a dress for a period of time at a fraction of the cost about it. You get it you get a couple of sizes so. That's one of the complaints that people often gases while night to try I've gone well. They have dozens of reviews from other people who have tried on the drastic actions themselves say this is what I like and address and you know it costs. For. Any one individual rental you can be anywhere from I think. So wells pointed out Alex's time was that like for one individual like forty to eighty bucks. Us that you can do a subscription. Right in net rent unlimited for 159 among. Oca and I think larger one on limited. If you if you spend more than a 160 bucks a month on clothes then I guess that's a good option for drugs or or how it stresses it's it's it's our character it's a lot of difference. If you're the especially if your new job where here. You know your personal appearance that you would do think about people who work in the news industry television news right here at the TV station. That that's a bar bouncer at UT I talk for example you know you talk to the women in particular and will tell reasons they're spending upwards of 5000 bucks a year work then. Is this would be much less expense Warner for any company or this company's export this for men in terms of us suits. At that I think there'd be application thing is you can get suits her. Guess there pretty expensive out there are their often times as expensive as as a woman stress. This makes. I love service it is it's cut down last dress. Dressed budget received so is this essentially statistics. You'll have this huge unit of the descendants you know a rental got to keep it for three days and then you drop back and then than you get three era until they charge late fees it relates. And you can your subscription service repay a fixed amount every month or you can page you know match on the website right now. Forty bucks bird for address two for four days that's not that is for years because it's not hard for women spent half the Earth's path. 500 bucks an address how easily you know. He's an and then where twice. Everett of the fine get out clause of the deficit anymore service and the this I'd really like this business model and they are. I mean in the age where you've got all these retailers going businesses. It's business is like this and causing it. Different and the retail well bookstores and that start right to be at bookstores a bookstores were the first hour and they used to be a lot of bookstores. Doubt maybe more on this country and our borders and a beastly a lot of bookstores around the countries and they're. If you're gone what else levers from. So I mean to bring get into retail let's talk but the specific yours or apparel they've disrupted pretty significantly in office supplies grocery. Grocery. One of the retail electronics electronics they are very different that's probably the biggest guest yeah. So I mean those are few different areas streaming tale. Progressed what's next they get that this is interest in big big big key thing is would they gonna go after next the one that intrigues me. He's getting into the gas stations. While. I'll tell you why can't tell how well they get involved. Well take over gas stations raised crack as it's it's it's a terrible business to be. Did you running gas station the margins are in and they companies put a lot of pressure I've got a client that runs. So it's just tough. But they could turn those gas stations in two delivery depots. And little convenience stores right ADM on devices ready for sale. Now if they could turn in the garage into where you could have your packages delivered in date the he could have a guy who's in the back 24/7. Gas stations open 24/7. I I I think they get into the gas does as Indy get a discount on your gas up your prime member prime outcasts. Sounds good. He had they'd have to be pretty Smart about the way they used it. I. At an ally at some point do you worry about Amazon just expanding too much and I've had already happened at all I think we don't get gas stations like I why not. I Don everything because that's I mean that's exactly the logic why they shouldn't. If the if you're only logic of why should I go into a gas station is why wouldn't I know I think the use those gas stations though it is. Depots right now I agree for deliveries and exchanges and a lot of that was out of those gas stations magic older is the Michael is it the Albany if you take the bees and reduce the car repairs. I guess you're all those up in the east are buying those suckers up and in my life of those guys are happy to sell. And while they're pumping gas you know you see those TVs that gas pumps. It could just be a video but our buddy Mac granite works for Amazon now showing the best deals on Amazon right now right now or if you wanna return something. I'll get to the depot bring it to the gas station I mean I just. I yet I was skeptical when I first saw the the other thing they wanna get into and I think this is the one. This is more against Shiite just the high screen wanna get into the travel books and that's a very crowded space you know you're gonna compete with trip advisor in Expedia global and Orbitz in Google Google high acting. And it and it's a very low margin business it is but let's say you are. Doing travel and years and allow your customers on Amazon to book a flight. Hotel or blue you know room rental. And in what you're gonna do as you're gonna say OK you booked your trip to. Florida and you rented this you know gorgeous Condo on the beach. Do you need anything shipped there and do you want us to provision. We take a vital give him a target occasion beckoning you into midnight your flight is an right till midnight. There's Mercer largely script you're booking. And who will provision so there's milk and cereal and vegetables and fruit. That's interest. Now. Who else is gonna bring all those things together I just wondered if they peak in some dark. You know beginning everything. Anti trust they haven't gotten to the point where they're having a tough time running it. Don't management structure is great yeah the I I don't think the Internet management issues I think there are issues convenience trust government coming in insane monopoly. Answer they're not they're not the definitional monopoly today that the minute that definition might change N eight date literally you have to change the definition of monopoly to go after news conference to restaurant and CBS getting into the medical services this kind of like the virtual doctor's heady feel about a virtual doctor I Cecil in favor. What's it be used to like a camera at the store and doctor Dudley do camera on your full on falcons opened up the app. Schedule an appointment the doctor in just talked them over the phone rather but it occurs doctor looked in your earpiece and here I check your blood pressure and all last.
