This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're so leave your world stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus give breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks done us. We opened today show with a conversation about three companies going in seemingly different directions. Always they reported earnings this morning they're blowing your way. Comcast. They're doing something huge in Europe. And then finally a local company Shire. Looks as if it will be acquired hi everybody it's very truck with you here on a Wednesday morning inside of guns. Boeing just crushing. Big day for Boeing on on today and you know I'm I'm someone who owned Boeing stock so obviously I feel up pretty good about this one here but bone coming out. With earnings per share of three dollars and 64 cents a share well ahead of the two dollars and 58 cent per share estimate. They beat on revenue by about 3% they raised their full year guidance they said they're gonna build north of 900 airplanes that he did they identify as to how much of beer. Beat was related to currency. So currency obviously plays a role in this. They didn't say exactly how much you know. Factors lead there done that yeah it's it's certainly is a big chunk as the dollar weakened significantly over the last eighteen months now affected batteries. They make a really good play. They do it I prefer for a bawling over an Airbus upon booking a flight. And I have a choice right in and the dollar differential is not significant I always impeccable yet it that they're really good planes in the ended they're making. The equivalent when he when you actually. Plotted out in their completing a plane every nine to ten hours yeah that's like. It's impressive what they're able to do and you know they they raised their guidance by about fifty cents a shares that's raising by about 3% for the full year guidance. And pretty much everything seems to be clicking for and I'll tell you if the dollar continues to weaken. You know China can threaten all they want not to buy bone plaintiffs have to happen it's going to end up being the cheapest best playing that they combined. The other thing it's ironic is if you ever looked at. Airbus you know you think of Airbus is being French company yup. But if you look at the components in those jets on them from the US forties at the last time I looked it was 47%. Dow components in an Airbus which is allegedly made him different are they're coming out of the United States both because the high end. Engineering and high end manufacturing. A lot of that still happens in the United States yet. And you don't see issues being made the United States anymore they'll you're not going to lead but when you take a look at things like wings when you take a look at you know flaps and things that actions at the level of detail the attention to detail that you need in the precision. They're very few points in the world they can do that the way the United States do. It's it's in it that's related to our education system that's a topic for another day anyway if you owned Boeing shares congratulations you had a really good quarter. And your stock right how much is stock happens to us of the stocks only about 1% now just because the markets and a little bit of a flop at the moment. Oh but the stock still up about 1% even though the markets down about half percent so still a good day for bone shareholders Comcast trying to buy sky. Looks like it they are making a 31 billion dollar bid for the the operator out of the UK. And the company. Comcast did report 21% profit growth compared to a year earlier. But this this deal here. It almost seems like they were forced into making it more than anything else I don't want a five they wanna by the blues some of the assets in the US yeah. And the fox wanted to vice guide that their behaviors been so bad that the European Union will just doesn't want to they Zoe said they basically. They always have Barack has passed by this in the Murdoch family had so many run ins with the EU debt that they're not going to be a lot of yes or Comcast obviously getting involved here in this would be a major expansion. In two while Europe for the they don't have nearly as big a presence as as guy does over there so this would be a big move for them on that side that the key here in what I think they still want when it's also and on his its its content you know that the distributions one thing they can figure that out. But they continue to look for the content that's the big reason why they bought NBC universal a few years back then they continue to be trying to make big push in that direction. And I think that's at the core of the steals well. Many view may have family friends neighbors cousins children grandchildren that work at Shire Scheyer is a big employer. In Massachusetts. And it now appears as gift to Qaeda pharmaceuticals. Will be purchasing Scheyer this is a very. And it's it's an in usual deal it's it's a lot of stock. And it's David and Goliath. Yeah on this it's going to be a 64 billion dollar deal if it ends up being completed its enormous it's a four point 3% premium over the previous proposal that out Decatur had made device Scheyer. In it would be an awful lot of stock changing hands in this deal it's not an all cash deal does a lot of stock that's movement in Kato was way down. Kate is down 7% as a result in this if if you look at kind of how I would compare this it's similar to what you saw from the CVS Aetna deal wary of one company. It's trading pretty cheap wood to Qaeda yet another that hey there's going to be a premium need to pay in order to acquire them and sue the acquiring company. The stock price in the short term ends of taking a big hit in order to acquire them what to Katie executives are banking on. Is that the long term the growth from acquiring Scheyer is businesses is going to be big enough that it offsets the cost in the short. I worry about Scheyer locally just because they are New England company owing to a meeting this morning. And people were talking about all the clients and friends and relatives. If they had that either work Scheyer now were. You are are going to work there yeah. And I think. EE usually track when a company gets acquired. There are many jobs lost in that acquired company this may be different though because to Qaeda. Is a Japanese company and they're gonna wanna have a foothold I would think in the Boston area indicators made. Inroads into Boston in recent years anyways they've invested a lot of money in the Boston area what is interesting is that when you talk about you know overall. Showers workforce to about 22000 people worldwide. That are employed by them. A big chunk as you mentioned is in that Lexington manufacturing site that they opened. For it when that opened it was a while ago now beyond have jobs like you usually did jobs again they it's not going to be a manufacturing job usually it's gonna gain and loss to Qaeda thinks what we can manufacture that cheaper in Puerto Rico. But no the jobs in Cambridge could potentially be at risk where they've got major you know offices for managerial type job HR Leah department that he did those of the jobs usually get and those are good job yet those the ones that are potentially risks so my guess would be the Lexington site probably not a ton of change happening there. But if you're working Cambridge and if you're an HR you're in payroll polish up the resonant. May not be a bad idea to get used good time to go out on the job market today especially in that field Aaliyah right especially Austin area roughly the area now it's gone into a double a week. You have to go to Newark. You can you can stay in this place to eat and stay in Boston. Coke cold this is like a perplexing story to me. Americans still like to drink soda a lot so. Yeah they saw that with the other redesign and re branding of diet cokes Kansas new flavors and things like that in they saw growth returning to the North American market for Diet Coke for the first time in awhile here and I don't necessarily know who's doing this mean I don't drink soda at all now it's one of the few saving grace that probably keeps me from being a thousand pounds developed eat. But I don't drink gonna talk you're not a big so don't fan but you're you're not either. Cannot say if you're raising a family and my wife and I used to drink quite a Minnesota but we got away from it when we had kids because. You know when year where active kids you go through all. Dietary needs of things again they show you what it does make out just how soda make you ministers where you're drawing sugar effectively. Right a lot of sugar in Diet Coke you're not drinking shook your drinking diet fake sugar so we would never bring your whole. Be in now and then they kids would order a restaurant but who'd never buy soda and bring it home. Yet so to make and come back and and I'm really quite surprised Coca-Cola we don't own that stock it right no way we used to. It looks like it's largely due to the re branding I don't know if you've seen in the new cans for Diet Coke yup so there that they're slimmer there BO pretty clean they look pretty and they don't look nice sound like it's a really nice job from a marketing perspective got to put those together the interesting thing about that the company that did the redesign on those cans and it was two companies that put those together. One of the companies that assisted on that only has like three employees it's just like a small tiny firm that just kind of figure out what they were doing a good artists. But they mailed from a marketing perspective I think that's the only change that really happen. I am curious as to our audience do you drink carbonated soft drinks. And I'm talking about your Coca Cola's new Pepsi not club soda not LeCroy things like that talk about the drink either diet soda. Or regular Coke in and Pepsi. Our tech's number as you know is 63566. But our poll question. Is posted on our web site which is financial exchange showed dot com. Do you drink carbonated soft drinks. You can vote on our poll financial exchange showed dot com with the stock end up doing after the earnings announcement. Wasn't great just like most stocks that have reported earnings recently just went with the market being concerned about interest rates. It's been a sell off even if you've had earnings beats and that's the case that you're seeing here. How likely are you to be audited by the Internal Revenue Service. I'd wanna know the answer that question and we're gonna give you the answer to that question and much more when we return to the financial exchange. Like us on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter TFE show. Breaking business news is always first right here on the financial exchange radio network. You've never been audited it's an awful spiritually through the Internal Revenue Service. Told you thought it could tell you that from personal experience and it's very expensive so. We asked the question how likely are you to be audited and really chuck it has a lot to do. If your business owner I think you you you increase your likelihood of an audit just due to mistakes. Yet if your business owner does bump up the chance but generally it's based on income that affects your ought to level now the one exception. Is if you file and say that you have no earned income at all. You do have a higher chance of being on because the government comes in and says wait a minute something's not right. Well and there was a lot of fraud related to the earned income tax credit exact and that's where they say look something's not right you're taking deductions you shouldn't be years something's going on here. So if you haven't AGI of zero mountain. You have two and a half percent chance of being audited if you make between 125000. Dollars a year in aid GI. You wind up with eight point 71%. Chance up so again there's a little bit more fraud at some of those lower levels. Between 25049000. To point 49%. 50075000. Is point 48 and he pretty much stay there until you get north of 200000. So it 200000. Of income that's counseled and yet you go up to about eight point 7% chance until about one in a 140. At 500000. Income it's a one point 5% chance. At five at the million dollars in income it's about a three and a half percent chance. Five million dollars and income of seven point 95%. Chance that if you make ten million dollars or more Tom Brady won in seven of those people gets audited every year now. You know one thing I would point out somebody said to me the other day. Said you know with the audit odds of being so low it's almost worth cheating on your taxes. What I would say eighty news when they ought to you know. You know you look you you skew through those numbers pretty odds are pretty well and and so you're you're making a hundred grainy CO2 by 21 in 200 chance right come after it with ya. The thing to understand is they're auditing. Because they know you'd cheap rate they they have so many systems in the using artificial intelligence and using algorithms. They know whether or not you'd cheated on your taxes how do they know what they're watching things like cash flow you're checking account. They're law looking at things like the lifestyle you use they can tell us this is you know that that's the thing that I think people who cheat on their taxes. Invariably forget they think well you know I've got all this cash coming in they'll never know Dana. The BB they can tell by the way you know letting the can tell by your travel to can tell by your cell phone bill. The Internal Revenue Service has access. To frankly scary. And again keep in mind that also it's the people who cheat that raise tax rates for the rest of loss. Yeah that's that's the other thing that you have to keep in mind if you decide Jeanne any taxes what you just make it more expensive for everyone else to actually pay them. You know we asked the poll question which was do you drink carbonated soft drinks Coca-Cola Pepsi Diet Coke things like that. 40% of our audience 41%. In streaks carbonated soft drinks. 59% as duke. Tied to partake got to have got a couple attacks coming in here from our listeners. Out of the 978 Barry drank four or five diet Coke's per day off. When I went from regular Coke to Diet Coke lost fifteen pounds sugars bad however I would say good sir. Diet Coke could be just as bad now does it makes it kills in different ways yes that put gasoline. Ratcheted the big. Do they really yet if you look at that would take a look at the health effects of diet so the idea I. Because you know it's really bad. You talk about your they news and and why people don't know this this is real news. It'll publish it right that you have to really look you have to read like University of Michigan in depth report. It never publish them rate was never heard in the Wall Street Journal. But you you look at what's in diet soda the news as an extra chemicals. It really is. We have is there's a reason why has no power or it's because there's nothing in its real yep here all I drink is monsters low calorie energy evidence that sounds healthy that's loaded. My friend finally have a loaded with water. The couple water are couple black coffee so let's say it's a free country people are avid watcher. The ad it's. For health reasons well. On and Kurds out well work a lot of you guys eat out in the more I read about restaurant food right. And I don't don't don't worry I don't care with a year ago to really address for a there's a much salt they put that's O Leo with the other thing NSG. The there's a lot of that's historically been primarily Chinese who are definitely it is not. I want to do it Italian restaurant and the energy they use in industry. Yes I worked in the restaurant. Back in the eighties. Mr. sick cam it's at chemistry nude. Port wrong now that was a little later as a waiter but I'm telling you it is that was that's along amnesty has been an issue is you know it causes headaches found naturally in tomatoes cheeses and other fruits I'm not eating any of those. It's natural at all my favorite things. Well here's a bigger problem than soda consumption. World wide whine oh it. Falls to a sixty year like talk to though I tucked a completely out of this problem yeah he's he's he. You are you guys I know is Jim into one and all of Jim losses line. And he's like my wife likes line. And a three way line prices the cardinals. Did not gonna go up to skyrocket because think about chuck. All the sudden. There was an eight point 6% decline. In oil output what would happen the prices probably about 28 point 5%. There was an eight point 6% decline after what you think about this. This in your pipe and smoke. Eight point 6%. Decline in the amount of wine produced last year. So you won't see these prices trickles through though for two or three years right this is just kind of come to market but it'll be like at 20/20 20/20 one. You didn't see prices move up at that point. The stock up on your red lines now. Some people are gonna be buying attend all of bottom line for 25 dollars every telmex guys and the twelfth. It could be more if you think about eight point six if all this that. Oil production went down eight point 6%. I tell you what will prices go up hackable more than between the differences that you need to buy oil. You don't need to buy one six different sound guy and not let out of somewhere I drink a lot of one we go through probably two balls one a week but like do you think there's a price point that Murray tell us that no bottle line goes from ten bucks to fifteen bucks people signaled it goes to eleven bucks and people if you look at how people buy wine in the United States is almost all that is blocked below ten dollars a bottle now. What's it gets above that most people won't buy this cheaper bottles could be bad hangover stereo. Ordered the worst it's as simple sugar don't need to spend much on a bottle to get a good bodily you go almonds the F span you go open like that 1718 dollar range and you can find. Awesome stuff there you don't have to be going up to like 5060 dollars a bottle you go up to 1718. April it under Tennessee getting bad run. Gadget what I find if you look economize standard is a look at usually try to be in that eleven to twelve range for something that I normally drink how do you know remember we had that line. Yeah you know. Vina the you guys like is that how you buy one is and you guys are one can't honestly I would the labels now see what looks cool alleges that camera they are I got a picture of McAllen for gun I'm I'm not so basically guys don't know what you're doing now of course correct as they act like most things in life I. The just wanted to make sure that two young educated people would acknowledge that they know now or wherever there's correct. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today thanks to Darian jog right here on the financial exchange radio network. The markets down as this more terror stuff this more fuel related to tariffs or is it interest rates is what's a tenured. So the tenure right now is still north of 3% at the moment to we are at three point 01% right now I think it's mostly related to interest rates the potential of those continue to move up. And so if you look at the three potential that the three biggest input cost the companies have when you look at how most companies grow their business. You've got interest rates through borrowing you know obviously that's big cost you up higher wages. And then you've got higher energy costs all three of those potentially work against companies over the second half of this year in terms just cutting margins and that's why stocks are solved yet that's that's the big thing that you're seeing is just all of your major input cost to rising at the same time. And you don't have a ton of growth going on necessarily got good but not great growth we get the numbers on Friday for the quarter. But it's you just have more inflation I think out there than people realize. My friend Megan from the tape says I'm drinking a big diet pepper doctor pepper right now. They out of character so they use that I'm just curious I in here's what I do. And and have always maintained Tucker that our audience is educated and affluent and I'll get some. You dispute on that periodically from the audience. But 31% of our audience drinks carbonated drinks sodas to lower than I would of thought. It Alter anyway you look at the American population and look at that we are as as a country I dazzle more than 31%. And the reason I think. That only 31% of our audience drinks soda. Is because they don't leave bread and yet I've read that report out of Michigan says that night so it was bad or read that report. Harvard that says regulars at the Tibet. And and you know I do things that are bad for me too much I'd smoke cigars. You know league we all have a places you're double place or two and think sure you're not. Nobody is. Yeah I. That the stats from the CDC by the way in 49%. Of adults drink a sugar sweetened beverage on any given day right. I'm only 31% art. And or 31% of ours did you know how much as soon as the average person in the US drinks or rather astonished and I. Today this unnoticed and this is per year on a per capita basis of this is even. Is so if you go to the average actual drinking the average person actually drink soda do you know how much they drink each year. I don't about eighty gallons a lot. To Minnesota just a correctly we Gallo and a half a week walk around and and just look at the American population. The the places that are highest in terms of where consumption is our greatest of these drinks. Is typically if you look at the seven highest states. Oklahoma Louisiana Mississippi South Carolina North Carolina Kentucky West Virginia then look at the education levels of those states the lowest areas California Minnesota New York Vermont Connecticut Massachusetts measures. But the education levels in the states up as to put two and two together so that art. Primitive state misses and an interesting story. A professor. At Framingham state is married to a very wealthy. Entrepreneur or who ducked his company public. And this family has in doubt Framingham state with two scholarships to full scholarships per year. Yet they've endowed with 2.4 million dollars to provide two full scholarships to students starting in the fall of 2019 so about a year and a half from now open and so these are the going to be called the man Crusoe English humanities and social behavioral sciences scholarships. And they're going to cover all tuition fees and room and board for all four academic years. At Framingham state. And this is a school they spent a bunch of money in the last decade on building new facilities on opening of our listeners are driven past their recently I grew up you know literally two miles from there on so I was right down the street from them. But they've spent a bunch of money recently renovating that campus and getting some new buildings in there. And I think they're poised to kind of take a jump and become 00 a little bit more in the conversation as far as some of the state schools that you have in the state of Massachusetts race. Well whether it be. Become. Highly touted state school I think you're going to see families going forward saying. Well we have a choice you can get in to Becker College. Or you can get into Framingham state. If you look at the tuition differences right you look at tuition at Becker college and you say. Would Jean Becker College is gonna cost me forty ground in Framingham State's gonna cost me 27. I I just think you're gonna see a lot more families saying to their kids. Look you can't go to boat and you can't go to the Roger Williams you can't go to Dartmouth 'cause we can't afford. We are as a family we we've got three kids we simply can't afford it. Good Framingham state. And you know maybe get some financially as a result of Dylan there but you're starting off with a lower ticket price. As opposed to Roger Williams Dartmouth are both Britain. All lean including room and board at Framingham stating you were going in state you paying 21000 including room and board prayers if you go to a private school. You probably in the ballpark of anywhere from fifty to 70000 a year including room board now. And that's where I suspect that and that's why this type of program it's very unusual to see family stepped up. But we are a state university in New England is not unusual in other parts of the country. You go to other parts of the country the state schools that you oftentimes of the best schools in the state go to Florida. Look at the best schools and for germ theory try to get to go to Michigan you go to California like the eagle across the board I mean like some of these schools lake. Let's talk about Amazon in the Amazon affect and the impact it Amazon is having on consumer staples stocks that are bad sector to be invest. This year it has and he you know you go across the board whether you're talking Kimberly-Clark Procter & Gamble on the big staples companies that people are familiar web. The problem is even with good dividend payouts on a lot of these companies the overall earnings story for them simply hasn't been strong enough to continue to keep people invested and there couple different reasons for that number one obviously is the is rising cost receiving wages energy transportation and so forth we know that that's happening. Rising costs are bad if you can pass those cost on the consumers but what online shopping is Don and is it's made it's always the comparison shop on things like Kleenex on diapers on things like that. Then all of a sudden you see this margin compression where companies can get past those additional cost through. And it's largely because of the growth of Amazon and online competitors that you're seeing that now not just companies like Amazon. In what would happen to the razor business yup and would dollar shape called and Harry's have done to Gillette and companies like that. It's it is systematically disrupted. Some of these core businesses for these companies in ways that are easier replace. You know you'd. The it was a starting at her to do in this must be privately like I can't imagine their manufacturing that. The other day I went to bide my wife needed batteries so I went to buy batteries on line. They were Amazon battery you get the other hole Amazon basics on they have and I've I've used in the batteries I even have. You know those the foam rollers to lake stretch your legs and stuff. I'm one of those that the aids Amazon brand because it was the cheapest thing out there and that's got to be just kill these companies I would imagine you know it's easy that. That's that's in an area you look at the you know Procter & Gamble in General Mills. Their struggle as a consequence it in you look at what they may now for you know that that Amazon basics. That that brand they have there. You go down the list it's not just. One off items anymore ICM I'm just on Amazon right now take no look then there is a twelve inch cast iron skillet there are forks and knives. There is betting there are computer speakers there are back to how she feels phone charters like you go you go across the board like I don't take look I'm in outdoors action. And I find I've got tents that are Amazon basics backpacks on blankets. Tarps like. They laptops stands there's cities in to everything now when they're just undercutting all the. And a distressing text messaging need to read. I don't this 603 says I give super troopers only two stars out of four. Do you see it on Monday I thought it was the best movie I guess seen all you as such I don't think I give it five stars. And six a thrilling and it's over two EE he'll use two out of four. I'm alive that's terrible score it's terrible tech review Syria know. That's it I'm distressed I'm waiting for the before Netflix and that is a weekend we got to see I'm telling it was that good you laugh from start to finish. All the solicitor deny care for it really surprise. Me you know price murder in higher. Eight era in New Hampshire it's a high brow audience there and he he's way and they don't like Vermont to begin I went to an Ivy League school. I get it. Starbucks embracing drive thru I never think of Starbucks is being dry answer I like Ike. Well I guess has mostly when IC for starters. In cities. You ever see Starbucks drive thru twelve time that no one out but it's not drive through. He didn't try to route 10 yeah yeah they don't they don't have drive through there though from pretty much all via a suburb Starbucks have drivers do that now aren't. Yeah that they're saying that 80% of their knew what cafes they're building in the US are gonna have them so they're clearly seeing this is an opportunity to try to get more people who don't necessarily want a stop in and spend the day you know perusing the Internet and get in free Wi-Fi and things like housing or food. It's star. Average. It's pretty good it's it's it's our case it's it's hit or miss you know some of the things they did their breakfast sandwiches are pretty good I've found. You go a little bit beyond that like I don't think they have very much for launch. That adult Elijah any way shape or form to launches pour its that like I've had a couple sandwiches there have like chicken pesto sandwich ones does not agree to stores. Always busy we have one in our town and that. Anything is. All eight packed the park well. Is is acting as its it becomes kind of like a meeting place and hang your appointments. It's it's it's a mortal opener you know they say look ticker a lot of flies to hang out here and you know space yeah they drinking coffee wars in terms of the article via a Starbucks has like though longest wait time out of all of the fast food chains and believe Oilers. Like the longest wait time so I'd point to drive her put Starbucks altogether how much that do you think is because their menu items are more difficult to make all. It's got a big checks their employees work out how many people does go to Starbucks in get a black coffee always give me of mocha latte for epic chino yes Duncan dunk and then that holds up the whole line naturally well down. Folks it's Barry Armstrong in am joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lots ski with your legal exchange quick tip of the day were talking today. About the differences between revoke global and durable global trust. Todd what is the biggest difference between. Ripple global and irrevocable trusts probably the most commonly asked question never. Probably is and first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust its not like just one mine call and so that's what makes it hard for her let me let me at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only trusts now the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of and your vocal trust with a revoke of trust and there really biggest differences. The irrevocable trusts were protector lessons from the arsenal the Reebok of trust never will so why would somebody use a revolt global trust. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or plot may well or lots of wealth and and their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home so how much money you have to happy you'd be like we define rich force I don't ask. 10000059. Joining us on the line now is Jaime Katz from Morningstar he would talk about Mattel and Jamie. Thank you for coming on with us today. Jamison Mattel obviously is is had deer some struggles over the last couple years in particular. In the last quarter for toy makers hasn't been great in general. What's the outlook for this company here. I think that's a mantra saying things that have very differently occur at the first is that I have spent on Monday. We've captured some clarity on Twitter act which has recently got into liquidation mode itself. I think no light at the end of the tunnel out there we know that liquidation at least in the United States should be. Through June and that we should be people to maybe hit some more normalized demand models over at the second half of the year which. These companies have really struggled to listen over the last handful quarter. What sort of the core products for Mattel these days where does the revenue come from. He's still looking at a lot of the traditional brands that they've been affiliated web part be Fisher I eat how we are. And then names like American guard Thomas the tank and then. Com you know a lot of brand equity there are a lot of brand awareness but I think that there's been a lot of struggle. With some of the created. Talent in the products that have been offered that has really allow itself to languish. In some of these product categories in recent years. What are they doing as far as partnerships go I know that Hasbro has been pretty aggressive in pursuing partnerships with a lot of the big gun movie franchises. It doesn't seem like you see quite as much from Mattel is that accurate. I think that's writing content and comes from hesitancy from prior management team to come adopt. Contact in digital exposure in the same way that Hasbro has been able to heal and I think a lot of it has to do is start lobbying at the this cycle historically excel. In the past it was too risky and famine and years of contact. Has that made that very ever creek where there's something in the pipeline every year I think that helped a lot more willing to follow it on that now. Atlanta last week they've announced that their current deal is leaving and then if he. You know red a lot more exposure to it aren't contents channel. Is stepping and he should be on a call tomorrow so. I don't know that he's gonna have a whole lot of insight into how to stimulate staff but because after ethical outcome at all coming up this summer we'd Toy Story fours so. They are dipping their toes into the water on the contents cycle and hopefully. With the right people on the east we you know weekend. We can feel a little bit faster kick up and exposure to that category ahead. It is Mattel took the company you know what is the stock price has gone from 47 bucks a share down to thirteen in the last four years now is this the kind of company that could be ripe for an acquisition by a private equity firm just take it private get rid of some of the mess and get things cleaned up. So it's possible hand shaking beneath CEO has done. Some historical ties to the PC industry but. There is a lot of black friends at leopard on the balance sheet right now and that I think warrants a little bit of caution and from may be financial buyers that want. Come meet their luck draft and then cut expenses that are ordered tried to do extract some efficiencies that at the balance sheet to turn a bit messed around so. You think there could be maybe some other strategic buyers out there forehead at the right price. But I expect that they will try to right bishop a little bit before we see anybody come out and really. I talked a bit out there to understand what the underlying real demand at the statement said. Surrogate thank you Jamie. That is Jaime Katz from morning start talking about Mattel the ticker on the if you do want to look them up on your own isn't and eight tees were there are rumors about a merger with Castro maybe two years ago yet it was either fifteen or sixteen that we heard those. Haven't ever heard a lot recently you know now they need it looks like Mattel. Is struggling. Especially compared has fallen at the part of his just due to some of the core products that they have and you know does Barbie still have the luster that it used it and have they been able to adapt to war you know what would. It's hot wheels and built up that Altria they own hot wheels Mattel Hot Wheels. I'm there I think that it is their victims of the yet tablet generation of fuel and the iPod generation you know all these kids out of the games. On media tablets and now iPods and I think that's taken away from your standard Torre fuel in it made for older kids not for younger ones like he really. Mike was Aaron still buy stuff for three year old even if they don't use them you know and they didn't use me if you're the if you have a two year old. Child they're not used in an iPad two recently but what about the eight year old world now lot of action I I think you might be onto something there so that the the counterpoint those if you look at a company like Lego. They've been able to grow leaps and bounds terms they've been able to adapt. Markets opened its on and again we're down 52 port 53 points on the Dow Italy haven't checked his oil. Oil's trading down 35 cents a barrel at 67. 35 when we come back. Have a conversation about Twitter and we'll state. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world and stay informed and up to. About economic and market trends plus breaking business news. And now the initial exchange we have Barry Armstrong and chunks. It is upside down day here on the financial exchanged. Ridder shares are down but they had a terrific course that doesn't make sense to me Condo prices in Massachusetts are now more expensive than house. I don't understand that and then finally. The third story we're gonna cover today is. The median house price in Rhode Island rose by 10% in a quarter how's that possible we Duchscherer didn't go up by 10% everybody's buried truck with you here. It is he Wednesday in its upside down Wednesday Twitter should be going up in price to. Yet to order came out they reported sixteen cents a share and earnings they were expected to up put out about twelve cents so big and beat on that side there. Their first quarter revenue came in at 664. Million up from estimates of 605 million and beat on revenue by 10% for the quarter. And so you this and say you know and there are user growth they did good future if they they've pretty decent user growth actually about five million monthly users. For the quarter. And then you go and take a look at Twitter stock. And like most companies that seem to have reported this week. Twitter ends up being down four point 6% we did the issue bad guidance did they say oh we're gonna do terrible next year they did it soft and guidance for the year and an and that's the big thing is you know any quarter that you've already booked tea that's revenue and that's earnings that's already happened and what are you gonna do next they said look we're not expecting quite as good of growth going forward in the future gonna have cost pressures -- and not necessarily have the same kind of growth and and that's I think the big thing that they saw here. Then the big take way that I have. Is they are remaining profitable at least in the and that's a big thing for company like Twitter there. If if this continues for the next two quarters they're going to be profitable for the first full twelve months after. Gail which is big for them to this yet if any thing he noted means is that they area sustainable business if they're gonna be around ten years from now. If they turn properly a new area of a year ago. We're wondering if there are viable business yet it was very uncertain as recently as. You probably march of last year as to whether or not they were going to be able to continue to operate and so. They do appear to have at least stabilize the ship and set and be able to go on sale okay. We're gonna at least be able to build something for the long term it might not be a 400 billion dollar company like FaceBook. But we have a niche that we can continue to operate in even if we don't. Reach that size of that scale I don't think we've ever seen this before. Prices for condominiums. Sold in the month of march surpassed. Those of single family homes in Massachusetts were talking about. And it reflects a new surge of construction. As well as a push by buyers to live in the city and I'll tell you what. You drive in anybody just to drive into Boston on a daily basis. That is a trip to hell it is just awful I did little or no prank it is it it's a terrible if Boston is terrible city in which to have to draw. Period and are there any scene it's a good driving city though to be fair like would you ever say GA can't wait to driving in New York. LA as much force them costing L odds terribly there's no city it's good to drive the net and now built for these many people I guess they're not now I know saved. New York had better public transit. In my pin did. Now I guess I still think they do pay its overburdened these days those still am still waiting to finish the second avenue subway for eighty years and you know again are essentially. But yet the the median sales price of condos Massachusetts. Came in at 389900. Dollars compared to 369000. Now for single family homes the biggest reason is a lot of those condos. Are in and around Boston where it's expensive. Whereas you can have you know a great place you've. I out no you know laughter. I don't know well. Actually in some of these police are like out everybody's bought a place and Hudson then Hudson's getting notes now lake Condo prices up sixteen point 4%. In year over year talker OPEC. And house prices single fan are you looking for a house or con house house prices were up five point 4%. So five point 44 vs sixteen point four and I think you're right it's the east. Multi million dollar condos that are skewing the numbers play in and also with the number of condos that are on sale at the moment. Inventories are down thirty and a half percent year over year in the housing housing inventories are Regan as well march the fourth consecutive month that the overall housing market in Massachusetts is less than 101000 units for inventory Yang condos have been coming up in my mine housing search to and their. Bright on par with you know the houses that are for sales slowed as the ball Amber's gonna get the house brick is it that you go with the content and LC got you know 400 dollars in fees fresh arson that I'll tell you what they'll a lot of people a lot of my generation ye your generation I concealing one house you have kids in. EU want the white picket fence in in the privacy. My generation we're selling new house straight city you're Tucker when you buy a house and your your are gonna buy it from somebody in the fifties or 60s70s. Yahoo!'s move to Florida some public about war. You know what to do Alan is there's down time and we already have a place townhouses but lately we have a place in the fall in Florida we have a place on the shore. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna buy count at townhouse or Condo. We still wanna have something we still wanna be in the Boston area we still wanna be in the Hartford area but we don't want to. We beat Ritalin the burden down the house that my wife and I and we bet we'll put our house I think don't stay in the area open my parents and townhouses and I think that is the big construction trend for the next decade is townhouses there not condoms. And then same thing and I I I like it. Rhode Island was ranked as one of the country's least affordable housing markets in March. While the first quarter of 2018 the prices went up 10%. Now prices still are back to where they were before the crash. No they're not but ultimately I. We've been talking about rode around for the last year and a half of positive things that they've been doing there. They're getting close to hitting escape velocity and in and really getting some momentum here I think between what's going on at the airport with bringing more traffic back through there after Pearson declines in the early part of the decade. Via some of the things that -- her mom is doing interviews and is it more business friendly state she is a business it is certain background she's venture capital Rhode Island is it it's a state that is again smallest state in the country but they're starting to do some pretty interesting things as far as attracting business in there and it's it you know it's it's always kind of been in the shadow of Massachusetts and Connecticut because it's sandwiched by the minutes kind of just this little piece out there. But I think there's some really good things going on in Rhode Island in the prices that we're seeing for housing. It's because people are moving therefore the jobs that are now moving into the state. The it's is equality like the nice and he news you've you've got. Tons of ocean and what is is nice for excellent what is amazing is they're still about 12% below the high housing prices that they had back in 2005 when they still haven't recovered now. Seven reasons stocks are better then real estate. You know the more real estate I own the more I'm inclined to weren't selling and buying stocks is roast it's a pain in the butt. Very real state got to fix stuff. AB you know still not dealing with a bad tennis yen is a list that is put together. On on market watch here and you take a look at some of the reasons number one. You have more liquidity with stocks combined sold pushing them but you don't have to go through big drawn out sales process. As a result of that you got or transaction calls no case would much cheaper to buy and sell stocks obviously if you trade every day all Dayton you're gonna run up some cost but it's cheaper. If you just use a one off transaction. There's less work as you mentioned you know have to go around near term in the grass paint the walls you know fix all the bricks and stuff like that. You can diversify more easily than a lot of cases to easy go out and buy one share a whole bunch of stocks if you really wanted to you can't go out by. You know small percentage of the two family are just doesn't happen like that. You can go owned by companies that you know about that you understand already. You can protect your investment in a downturn more easily you know again more liquidity helps there and also. Fewer taxes and fees can be a big reason that stocks to help on that side as well since you don't deal with property taxes and things like that was stocks. You buy stock it's always don't sell it you're not paying any taxes on him I think you'll pay and the dividends but you don't necessarily have to pay anything on the principle. Generally returns on stocks are better than they aren't rules. Real long haul it in again this gets in the real estate being local there are certain areas where real state can do very well for people. But historically if you look at the quote real return on realist states of net of inflation. It's minimal it's one to 2% a year. You know though it's ironic if you say that because. I think of some of my clients some of my wealthiest clients are people that don't a lot of roast but they also bought at the right time slow they and they managed it themselves right they. You know thirty year units near Yale and they managed it themselves in the they were over their cotton grass and they are doing the painting and putting in the new bathroom and and and collecting the rent I mean they they did all of it themselves and they had very strong return. And to be fair for every person like that who did well. I can point to another one out there that bought it the wrong time you know bought three properties down and in the Vegas right yeah 2007 and got smoked out of the market you know it's it's so much of it is timing and location in that business. And let us know what you think about the stories we discuss your due to the financial exchange radio network. Joining us now in studio is Jeff Slater Jeff is the CEO of ending posse technologies. Which is also launching its new online platform American craft brands dot com. And Jeff thank you for joining us today thank you for having me Jeff let's start first in Costa technologies what what is your company designed to do what he's trying to build. We are trying to build the marketplace platform and actually in ecosystem. For the US alcohol beverage industry. Beer wine and spirits so you're trying to could be kind of the in all of those different areas not just focusing on anyone in particular that's correct we were starting with craft brewing but but we're doing all three and so what is the goal of American craft brands what are you trying to do was. It is an end to end marketplace please platform. That is trying to help small brewers small distillers. Basically the small players. Level the playing field and be able to survive and thrive in an industry that. Everyone knows the big players how that side to get into this to begin with what opportunities he sees there. I was doing management consulting actually and I also with an employee and executive that the other issue which is the largest global spirits and wines company. As doing consulting actually for the craft Beers distribution. Industry Oca that the middle tier of the industry for craft brewers. And in. There were certain things that just didn't seem right I'm looking at it through the eyes of someone who worked for a large corporation how they thought their marketplace was so different. And how they had to compete and it was so different. We thought. There's got to be better way to do this what are typically the biggest challenges that EA craft brewer or distillery. Ends up facing as they try to grow their business. Access to accounts. And oftentimes they have to go through this. The distributor to get those accounts usually in a state by state level correct exactly state by state and all the Rick rules and regulations state by state so it doesn't doesn't scale well. How does your platform helped to deal with those kinds of issues and we have bill that the technology actually as a Lego blocks of technologies. So we configured the those platforms state by state. So it's appropriate for the state that your your operating union. And if you want to operate in multiple states we configured for you for that. So let's say that I have a craft Marie based out of Massachusetts and I want to start doing business in Connecticut. What are you have that can help me do. We have. Patented technology for auctioning your product if you have very rare product you can auction it to eyes. That are even. If you get it self distribution license mean you'd hear industry be yourself rather than going through distributor Duca 37 states have that. That ability what's New England states have that ability. All of them they do yes Oca means the last one to change over all knew him. And so back to you can Connecticut yeah example. We can help you test marketplace. Picks up your product find the accounts. Our methodology and our technology his every count in a marketplace. And this is a permission only. Platform mean you have to have a license to it to sell alcohol in order to even be on it. So we know who the universal players. What do I am just a regular consumer let's say that I'm Tucker and I like drink beer okay we do like it. What would you back to what can we users I four can we use to find new brands like how would someone like us use or would we not necessarily actually you can't yet Oca is that in the in the cards down the road. It is. What we're hoping to do is get the permission piece of it done. This is a blocked chain model by the way out there we're building block by block. What makes it permission deceit you have to have a license to be in it. In consumers by definition don't have a license to Treo I know we certainly don't but what we're going to do is we are going to give. Consumers access to understand where their product is going as it's moving. Rather than hearing after it gets there you'll hear before it gets there how do you deal with is that lets. In in terms of one place that I see this potentially being incredibly useful if you can almost make a marketplace down the road is that how you envision this being eventually just tanking go on and find all these great cry operator craft. Vineyards that thing clicked by by by annals and get it shipped to me correct that's where you wanna go long term correct that's the that's the blocked chain ecosystem we're trying to build. And by the way that also includes the regulators. When the other big. Problems for small brewers in particular. Is the amount regulation NAFTA how much is there is it's it's different from state to state how like how different can it be from Vermont to New Hampshire is an example. I have less. It lists. Experience with New Hampshire but I don't know if I can tell you about Vermont to Maine about Texas we got we talked a testament text okay Mike I know Texas into the race and Coca. In Texas. You can't trade alcohol except my cash to retail have to pay cash for that there's no credit. No credit card have to pay cash cash where you can't take. Unlike Massachusetts where there's a maximum you can give thirty via credit to retailer you can give no credit three dollars and Texas not. In Texas if you have he do latest little rule is if you have the cap room or group club. And you get over certain size you have to pay a distributor. Fee even though you're not. Mr. reading with them because they are there worried about the crossover between these tapped from becoming restaurants. And so you've got rules that are just. Two of the normal innings of that rule or those rules that exist in Texas might not exist twenty miles away in Oklahoma even so you have to be able to negotiate the of these different. Kind of pitfalls ran into and regulation infected don't exist there so a lot of lot of small brewers they small because it's too complicated to do what they do. To do with multiple states. What are what our platform does is actually take all the complexity it now does your platform. Effectively automate all this and he still you know representatives that helped guide people through it as well. Yes we do. So it is kind of a combination of those two aspects we consider ourselves the curators of this market and we don't necessarily consider ourselves the owner of this marketplace we've we built it. And where the permissions part of the of the marketplace. But we conspiracy of curators were there to help. We're not choosing winners and losers is there anyone else who's doing this at this point is there any competition in this pacers privileged few bears series that'll. There's a couple of pieces being done but not in an old one solution Nolan has looked at it and and are you while looking to bring on new talent and expand at this point yes we are watching me what what kind of jobs iron. We just finished higher doing a round of hiring we've opened our customer support center in the five colleges areas in OK at Northampton yup. Talent incredible talent of that area and we just tire fight cius under grads Tampa staff are our customer support center. And while they are also developers so we're gonna have them doing both this summer. And then we're going to probably double the size of that senate next year. So here you've you've got a pretty good growth going on as far as opportunities out there we do actually. As you know we just did a press release last week and the response has been pretty overwhelming actually that's his big demand for us in terms of if people want to learn more about your company. Where's the best place for the ago. Www. American craft brands dot com or www. In costs the unique tech dot com and and KATDK. That come in the best people to if if someone's a brewer to Stiller or vineyard they can go there can distributors go there can shops go there there. Retailers can go there. Distributors can go there. Brewers vintners and distillers can there and we've had contact with all of them in the last week and he says that the other web sitting in his American craft brands dot com dissidents stating what Jeff thank you very much for for joining us they were really appreciated thank you so much for having me. Jeffs leader he is the CEO of ending costly technologies and again the other web saint they've developed is. American craft brands dot com would get a quick break coming up here and then when we come back and talk about whether or not the free food at Disney World. Unaffiliated I folks it's very Armstrong in am joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lot ski. With your legal exchange quick tip of the day were talking today about the differences between revolt Kabul and durable global trust. Todd what is the biggest difference between ripple global and irrevocable trusts probably the most commonly asked question. Probably that. And first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust its not like just one angle and so that's what makes it hard to Germany would be at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only trusts now the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of and your vocal trust with a revoke of trust and the really biggest differences. The irrevocable trusts were protector acids from the national. The Reebok of trust never will so why would somebody use a reasonable global trust. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or plot may well or lots of wealth and end their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home somehow put their money you have to have me you'd like we define rich force I don't ask for 10000059. With the estate tax laws as high as they've the exemptions have gone as high as they are let's say you know 34 million dollars or less you're probably still going to be considering in your vocal trust if you're over 860. The estate planning expert at Cushing and Dolan have written a brand new guide. They'll answer the most common questions you have regarding revolt Kubel and irrevocable trusts. One Major League Baseball game. Per day to choose. What one game you get. Major League soccer games that are out of your local partner. So those are offering the dial up you get. Wet when ESPN and ran when Disney rather first announces that it was about maybe six or nine months ago. There was a lot of excitement that hey they're finally getting into streaming their finally gonna target the person who's cord cutting. It doesn't seem like this does that this is is someone who still has the court but just wants more sports is that right. Well yeah I mean it might be some people. War you know and well and some of these. Board or international sports. And then make a big enough difference for Disney in the bottom line though. You know and you're right and so this is sort of big east and they're getting ready for it in reverse. And wish quote those severe. That they've this could be over. Oh offer. Could be. Direct court option someday. That they're nowhere near ready because it makes some money they'll. Make more than two billion dollars but. They're not gonna get money from yes yes. Any future they don't they're not trying to. Just. Born and in part of the problem that I've seen with their existing business they get I think it's north of eight dollars per subscriber. Through there their cable fees that the rights fees they get right now. Most people who subscribe to ESPN though. They don't watch it in any given month they've got 86 million subscribers but typically only about twenty million watched the program that's on in any month. So they'd have to price this thing for their their flagship product it would be thirty to forty bucks a month to break even there. That's right so and you wouldn't get people. Not it would get. So that's the problem this bit from the beginning to go direct consumer. You have to get your card with 25 dollars a month struck it. To what they yet. Over the cable bundle. And that is the kind of you do your would be of these people are those people don't know what they're saying. Each individual channel and they're they're willing to pay. Four to subsidize other channeled there because they wanted to but they need to get everybody everybody the analysts differ. But anybody yet is that probably. The most. Don't want to cheers. So they can get away with charging. These day a boarded an eight dollars. I'm. Per subscriber for just before the it's way more than any other channel off. Got a one of the things that this also gets that is the fact that on bundling in the long run. Tends to be more expensive for consumers because paying all card you have to pay for everything you're watching you're not you're being subsidized by people who don't watch the shows to begin was. On bundling has initially been viewed positively but something like this could could kind of turned the tide there in some ways is is that is that accurate. They could you know I think the thing is that it will bundle has been is that the art and of these. Media industry of people the channels. As it but they used to be the best deal. Consumer and for the your games all these channels one of relatively reasonable speed years ago and others nearly 200. In here saying you know under. The table part of bill. A double look like a good deal I think in the future your industry. People saying you know what they used to take years ago able per common combination of different. Because. Meteors may it be sports. And offering. Something that is the bundle up. Yeah it is. And it'll add up they'll go up there but the people. And the thing is. Well you get everything you'd. Want from a even. Maybe but where there. Very good got to thank you very much of the time and thanks for the research on this. Thank here. Scotty Epstein from with the economists saw talking about ESPN's new streaming service ESPN pos we played football at Dartmouth we do if if if you could watch Dartmouth football. On that app would you pay five bucks a month worth. Maybe for the three months that there in season now. Item I would I would sign a long term contractor anything to do it right it's tough need to match like that business model working you know is there enough. People willing to pay five bucks a month to watch. That one sport where they have an album and they Notre Dame could probably get away the winner trivia about the other winner on our trivia question was Brian from Wilma at New Hampshire. He knew that Peoria Illinois. Is where caterpillar is headquartered. Is folks that market is offering. Dow is down 94 points. And the price of oil still hanging up over 67 dollars a barrel to 6766. Tucker shot. And buried signing up for to day from the front.
