This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day can. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. Three big stories to open today's show one we're talking about the Supreme Court and here. They are talking about. Taxing on line sales through Amazon to a greater degree we'll get into that. And in Starbucks issued an apology over the Philadelphia store rest. What's the story behind the story there and then finally. It's starting to become clear to me why people get involved in politics hi everybody it's very truck with you here on a Monday and chuck I just have to say thank goodness we're not among the 151000 people. Run in the marathon. It's it's it's actually not too cold if you're a marathon runner but it is a little bit too rainy I think that's the big thing. For the folks that are out there running Boston right now. You know that you typically you want cooler temperatures for marathon ideally 45 to 52 was actually they're not bad believe it or not the problem is that you've got this rain that's coming down and that just slows you down. Eight it in your car ate it slows you down. Being you know gets into your shoes and has the potential cause blisters and things like that. But the the temperatures actually. Are bad marathon runners don't want it to be 65 or seventy when their running Padilla you'll feel that you overheat it it'll probably be a little bit slow today. But it's just do you know that the rain is the biggest culprit there that the cold is actually not bad when you're out they say look make its yeah might take me a little while to warm up but I'll be okay. It's it's really just that green it's gonna have to Wear on people. Billions of dollars of goods sold each year by independent merchants on Amazon.com. And other on line. Retail marketplaces. Would be vulnerable to state sales taxes for the first time if the justices decide to reverse a quarter century old precedent in case before the seat pre Supreme Court this week. This guy I gotta tell you if you're running. Especially small mom and pop retail operation you're really open for good verdict out of the Supreme Court. Potentially and it would depend what kind of small mom and pop retail operation your running if you're running one that currently has a physical presence and you have to collect sales tax Ernie and Phil you're saying look GI and I'd love to see. You know sales taxes collected on these online orders for these third party merchants from Amazon and other small Internet resellers. If you are a small Internet reseller who was selling on Amazon and currently not collecting any sales taxes you're sitting there saying. Gee this could actually impact my business is this can have a real negative impact on me. But that being said I think it's probably about time that we actually puke leveled the playing field on these things just because otherwise what's the incentive to ever have any brick and mortar presence will. One of these retailers that are subject to loss of his way fair I don't think of them as being small retail ready here. Think they're they're big retailer in the way this law and help me understand spent the way the laws work days. If you don't have a physical presence in that state where you're doing business you have to collect the sales to some company like way fair selling furniture. In South Dakota. It doesn't have to collect the sales tax because they don't have a store or warehouse or an employee in south code. Yeah and this stems from a 1992. Case that was decided also when the Dakotas in North Dakota. And it was a business called quail which was in office supplies or. That said look we do not have a physical presence in North Dakota we don't want to be collecting sales tax George making deliveries in them and so. That case was effectively. Review by the Supreme Court. And justice John Paul Stevens said look it's up to congress to decide if there should be cross border sales tax going on there. Congress hasn't done anything on this okay and again this kind of gets back to the conversation we have on a lot of things related to technology. Oftentimes the text out paces the regulation. And so that's why you have these loopholes where. No one has said whether or not these sales taxes need to be. Collected South Dakota is trying to impose a law. That would extend the collection of sales tax to any seller shock it's doing at least a 100000 dollars of business in that skin. Or conducting more than 200 transactions. With state residents. So it means you've got a sizable business. If you do 100000 bucks a revenue and I say do you get rid of even the minimum. Just tax everybody because otherwise look all I can see is a company saying you can get a set up a bunch of subsidiaries to stay under that 100000 dollar mark up. I can have let's let's say that I we're selling office supplies myself. I could have solders pins I could have Zahn as he bracket again divided and all these different pieces and all of a sudden figure out ways to get around that. I just think what get away with the minimum either you gonna collectors mountain okay. And so just say look you are going to be required to collect state sales tax if you don't pay it pay you're gonna if you're going to be treated the same way as any brick and mortar biz. Did you know that if you sell an item let's say you have. You make widgets in your selling them through Amazon.com. Amazon takes 15%. Off the top. Well depends how big of a company be it in some cases they do that there are companies that negotiate with Amazon to get better rates to so they can have their products list there all right so. It in his on typically collects a 15% cost cut for items sold by outside vendors on its site. Plus warehousing and logistics piece so if you're gonna sell him as on site you better have pretty good margins because in his own statement chunk of it but think about it if you had to do all of those all of that warehousing yourself then. It's a significant cost that you be bear and so Amazon says look we're gonna handle all of this for you and were effectively just going to charge you in order to do so I it's that there's a reason why most companies go through that process and it's because it's still cheaper than than doing it himself was must be working. Because in the most recent quarter chuck seller services revenues. Grew 41%. Through Amazon. That's unbelievable and that's even with colon problems that they have with counterfeits and things like that and they got a terrible reputation gather itself. Don't think a they have not in the storm Arabic policing that any better I'd rather they're trying to I just there's. That they're not doing a great job and a Starbucks issues apology over Philadelphia store arrests is this a bigger story than day it was huge yesterday. A mile I live under a rock I decided I didn't even know what this week you when I woke up night and I had no way I had to read about it this morning last night. I I had no idea what was going on here so I guess and correct me if I'm wrong discuss again Everett couple articles on the so I guess. A couple guys walked into a Starbucks. Went to use the bathroom didn't buy anything in the and design uses about they were denied use the bathroom but they wouldn't leave and so Starbucks called the police who then arrested and escorted them out and then release them. Is that is that what happens that is what happened and Starbucks can't apologize enough. Today. What I I think what's I just I I don't understand what's actually going on here. Well I think with the ark claiming is that they were racially discriminated against but the fact of the matter is. I think if you walked into it like most if you go into downtown Boston you can't just walk into any restaurant news our term. And I have. Of they they're not through like. The you know I usually literally run in and then run out just you know before they can say anything to me I like I am not proud of Italy but assign us where it's like yep it's a guy that I had to do a couple times is like you just help it's if they don't know he got to go. If ya well at any rate on. The the city's police commissioner of Philadelphia defended the rest saying employees said the men wanted to use the restroom but were denied because they hadn't bought anything. He said they re fi repeatedly refused to Lee I don't know if this blows up into bigger story and a day it was it was I tell you it was at the top of the cycle yesterday may which have more public restrooms medium. Should. Politics. Something we don't discussed much on the show and less I start to look at it and seed money and dollar signs. I now look at politics a little differently I didn't know that congressman had such Richard pension plan to do they Paul Ryan he young guy. And he's gonna retire with a huge pension. You know what happens is that effectively once you've reached age fifty you are eligible. Four in the wee bit of federal employees retirement system the first program terms and so based on the way that the numbers are calculated. Paul Ryan would be eligible for a pension of about 76000 dollars a year. Based on his twenty years serving Ian. The House of Representatives and and if you also factor in the fact that he was a congressional staffer for number of years. He ends up getting a pension of about 85000 dollars a year starting age. Fifty so he gets that now for the heat did he give it to be a hundred years all he could that if I believe it's. It's an early pension I mean in this is congress and make about 17580. Grand a year in in that ballpark having its 171. Right now. You know we we've talked a lot about teachers and their was 74 you know we we've talked about firefighters and their pension plans and police officers and their pension plans. We've never talked about congressman. Should congressman be eligible for federal pensions like if you took the money do you think this would clean up the game at all in terms term limits and things like that. This this is where the money is the pension small potatoes Paul Ryan writes a book he's gonna make. Millions beyond what this is you know like the big but you've got caught me reading a book right now a much as you can off that book. Millions millions and millions of dollars I mean like it it's going to be a massive amounts so. Yet as this should Paul Ryan you get this pension based on the the numbers in the area. I just. I don't know that there's bigger fish to fry and my boat I mean you've got 435 congressman their pensions are not the big problem that we have now when it's all said and done. Would have been nice to may be raised that age from fifty to 55 or sixty years 6567. Yards and both of us congressman is not a physically taxing. Profession they're not going to work every day and their hands and knees up on a roof somewhere and gutter somewhere it's something we say look why would they be entitled do pension age fifty. There's no need for that based on the type of work that they're doing and I can say hey all you PU get a pension age 65 for 76000 OK now we've got. Something voter but why not just stated at that eerily. There's going to be a lot of pressure put on pension plans public pension plans going for it why not just say to federal employees. Look no more pension plan you're getting a 41 K plan with a matched among fourth and you know they think that's that's kind of know what do we the private sector started to go 25 years ago. Our poll question today is should congressman. Be eligible for federal pensions I voted already and I voted no we can probably guess that based on the conversation we're having. Our website address if you should care to vote in our poll today is financial exchange showed dot com if you care to comment on that topic. You can text us at 63566. Did you guys know Jordan's Furniture. Is owned by Warren Buffett I did. Yeah that's when they self edit these ten years ago broader than that I wanna say it was like 99 or 2000. It was well there's two Brothers run in the company gray area and Eliot Berrian Elliott Barry retired LA it's the only guy run in the shown in his name's Teoma right there and I think of it the o's come up with these unique and very different promotional ideas and I I like it people one on this before. Yeah what what they have done is this the first one of these they ran was back in 2007 where they said look at the Red Sox win the World Series. Anything you buy between you know certain stretch of dates right would be great we'd give you the money back after the World Series and it paid off today because there socks that was the second. Second World Series announcer. And so today they ended up paying off about 35 million dollars in furniture. Port 25000 families largely they finance it by they they took out insurance with Berkshire Hathaway on this and so that's how they've been made the payments actually. But so what they've done this years they said look if the Red Sox throw a no hitter. In any of the 64 games after the all star break this year or so from July 17 October 1. They will refund any furniture that's purchased between march 28 and may twentieth. And the holder in that when we can go bye week ago but I'll offer is or acts like that I biked 101000 if it does not appear there's a maximum. So you you can go win and say look I I'm buying. Furniture for every room and how and if you watch C a no hitter between July 17 and October 1. You end up a no hitter by the Red Sox. Hitters aren't there per year in the whole week. There's about one and a half now it is one half yet more common than it used to be yeah for the whole year yeah and that's all teams combined in the what are there thirty teams fourteen there's 313. Teams yeah so. Thirty teams across the country yet but he has to be a Red Sox pitcher. Right throws the no hitter in the second half of the year yep. So I was thinking about it and in doing the math kind of in my head on the way into work on because I heard the commotion I was sitting and so go located about you know one and a half a year ago about one half percent chance to begin there dumps are. There's there's one half years okay. Out of all the teams then you have about a 3% chance that it's your team but it's in this little stretch so maybe it's about a one and a quarter percent chance we'll turns out it's actually worse than that when you actually do and what is the so. The way that it works now is a lot of no hitters tend to happen early in the season. And the reason for that is simply because hitters are kind of in mid season form and so. You may see cases where is there a picture start off ahead of hitters the two times where Eaton Steve early should have to be home game by the way. He indicated no wrote the can be a road game it doesn't even need to be a complete game they said it's a really. It was a tough place to pitch in. There's been a couple in recent years and openly had warned that adults Lester has or had won there yum and you do sea salt and the Derek hello there glow yet they're so actor that was a loss of yet but so. It's it's a rare feats of the chances are not great. And still mathematically if you just look at it based on the overall probability is of actually allowing no hits to all of the people who come up. It's always about up three hundredths of a 1% chance that you see one in any particular game. So it's it's it's rare that it happens. If if you were a betting their best picture. Chris Sale. Yes a lot of guys miss too. If if you were a betting man you know it's it's again realistically maybe 2% chance that this actually happens and so you got like one in 51 and a hundred chance that you end up with. Free solution in sight you're telling me shouldn't count on. No I wouldn't. We the the teams they play. Have a lot to do as well right they don't they played the Florida team what's the Tampa Bay Rays know the other team the Marlins Marlins they already played in this here. All they don't claim in the I don't know if they do let me put the this is actually going to be etched in the schedule. In the back half of the here is the Red Sox face the race three times in the Marlins twice. And the Marlins are very good very bright they faced the rays a lot more the focus there and division yeah actually other than the Yankees the teams in the division are. Not very good about David Price. Let's see who they have his show yet they get the yes there are saying they ask you they go to Atlanta a few times Atlanta's pretty bad but they do have two more games against Miami and it's it's a mixed bag here until auction the other thing you do see sometimes is in September the the rosters expand so you do get some minor league players that come up soon occasionally you have teams that trot out just. All full line up there and you maybe you know it was on accidentally in something like that. But it's and it has to be complete game no it doesn't. It doesn't know they said that it they were interviewing all last week actually subjected go six innings. Right absolutely throw ninety pitches and and you win ONEOK is then the relievers would have to come on and throw the remaining three innings and still be a no hitter in those are pretty you don't see many of those madam the combined no hitters know those are rare there's like they do what I was up there and years or so that they're pretty rare just because. Oftentimes you have guys coming in who just you know give up a hit just as they're coming into the game fresh so what happens to their financials they lose what you 2000 they sent out insurance so they buy an insurance finally when you have a golf tournament you buy and hold one insurance or. Yeah is it's something like that it's kind of like you know I Warren Buffett does the thing a giveaway billion dollars anyone Wednesday perfect bracket bracket yeah you know it. They know how to price this from an insurance perspective and so they probably just go to Warren and say look. Berkshire give us a policy you know pay. You know ten grated or to have this insured and will will get all taken care of there. Then well it's fascinating it. It is fascinating. They Lexington is Scheyer is going to sell beer on college G. Business though which when we say Lexington were talking about Lexington Massachusetts are headquartered showers had worked. Yeah and they're selling this business in order to actually try to encourage to Qaeda to look at Scheyer is an acquisition candidate. And so this is pretty interest in here. And Scheyer they're saying could be worth as much as fifty billion dollars. And so there they're doing this just trying to kind of get things cleaned up in the event that indicated does want to. They sell and also here is so is it so that it to Kate is allowed to buy them to from a regulatory to a point yeah night. They would with some maverick talk about Merck they're making a big bet on a very successful cancer drug. That's next on the financial exchange. Like this on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Joining us now on the line is Mike Armstrong for Wall Street watching Mike let's start first of Bank of America reported earnings today. What do we get from them. They did and says because. System with what we saw out of bad JPMorgan and city. 62 cents per share profit which is above estimates revenue came in above forecasts as well. You know again the expectations for these big banks were pretty high assist doctors in moving too much stuff. About 13 of 1% this morning. The same worked up about 3% today what kind of good news today yet. You know you've seen this this. Drug battle despair to battle back we going on between. Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb and they'd just announce that they had them in a late stage. It is bone cancer tests come out Merck's drug is key Trudeau and sorry dad Bristol-Myers. Drug adoptees though and it looks like the key true their results were a little bit stronger than argue otherwise they're very. Similar drugs but immersed in a little bit better so. Merck it up this morning about a dollar sixty cents nearly 3% whereas Bristol-Myers down this morning's fort Dodge City sent nearly 8% of that. Also Costco moving up today up about two and a half percent and assuming there's good news for them. Yeah some analysts came out from Wells Fargo. And upgrade the stock outperform from market or their siding. Expectations of increased comp store sales Venezuela's membership trend that they think there's going to be special dividend in. This stock morning Buick I've bucks. Over two and a half. Very good thank you Mike. That is Michael Armstrong with Wall Street watch you know there marathon runners are hitting it. Headwinds there running into fifteen mile headwind totaling about banks. They're running into head into. You know bank the here at the things that I worry about for banks and I owned banks failed Bank of America oh and Citibank. But as a stockholder in those companies I worry about one. The the refinancing activities drying up right we we talked about that last week yup refinancings week. In two. The ears start to have to pay out a little more interest because consumers. Are why easing up to the fact. That Peyton my big bank isn't paying me any interest in my on line and actually will pay some interest Internet banking. Starting to gain some political. It's it's making a little bit of movement around the edges the national average for savings accounts right now is still point 09%. Now so they're now moving a whole lot. If you view if people will look around on Internet banks and things like that. I use them myself and you can get much I think my my savings there is around one half one and three quarter percent you know. But it's the most people a lot of people don't like the Internet banks just because they can't go to a branch and withdraw money the same way. You know like I have a lot of people that Biden in handled their investments in a lot of what they'll do so keep a certain amount in their local bank but it might only be. I don't know ten or 20000 dollars to keep the men in the area but then what they'll do is all now they'll use a bond fund very may be sometimes a tax free bond fund. As a replacement instead of having a lot of cash because in the old days freed keep money in cash did you make 5% off. But now. There and that wasn't that long ago there now don't twenty years ago we your local bank would pay 5%. Now you since you're not gonna get that we do they keep the minimum we have new bank in the and you keep a lot in your in your safe taco a bond. What's interesting is CD rates are moving up now on an intermediate term when you look like two and three year once in and a lot of cases. They may make more sense than bonds given the fact that interest rates are moving Alton. You know like you started if you can get two point seven on a two year CD. Yet it's not a bad option for him. Trustees he did you say did you hear anymore about the rumor of Wal-Mart buying put her over the weekend. I didn't hear anything on them now now via a big guy that broke was if pride in years Saturday tanner indeed the that there was. Conversations about Wal-Mart buying flip card if you don't know who they are flip card is a delivery service I think they're gonna pay about a billion dollars for. But when a folk artist Indian e-commerce company yeah. But it may aren't aren't they built they do the same thing is it's the cart no no all of it will put cart is Amazon and India are all okay. Whole different deal no no reason or about you talked about Merck and there are in their draft you know that he traded drug addict cancer drug they have. It's 9% of sales thirteen 1500 dollars a month. Honestly for treating cancer doesn't it seem to be a bargain. Yup it is it's. Like who can afford. Thirteen 1500 dollars a month well that's why our health insurance premiums are so high is they here's the thing people don't realize about health insurance is. So many of the cost now or for treatments that we didn't have 4050 years ago something like this. Insurance companies now or covering okay were previously there was anything you could do but there's got to be an out of pocket. Rate is so you know maybe Europe pockets 10% of the thirteen five that's still I don't know how it necessarily work said he depends on your individual policy I mean. Polls count I'd just like. A mall for cancer research in and I looked at the prices. My thirteen 1500. Dollars and it prolongs. Patient survival in some cancer condensate cures just prolongs patients survive. I'm taking a look actually on what we have four co pays just on what you Medicare and lower. Not just some curious so often times for one month it looks like is standard Medicare co pay. Is somewhere in the range of 500 to a thousand dollars to somewhere in that ball parks are too big chunk obviously. But again it'll it'll vary you know kind of depending on where things. Can stack up for your particular policy. Starbucks. And chipotle. Are offering a new employee perk. Paying for the college education of their places is Smart you have what you've seen Starbucks in particular. In the last I think they've been doing this for about 45 maybe even a little longer than 45 years now. But what they do is they offer the ability for employees to be covered for a 100% of their education costs. Not at Arizona State University which is online. Yeah it's it's an online program and the big thing is you know a lot of these tuition. Assistance programs I take with a grain of salt is one of what you see are companies have cable pay 2000 dollars towards you student loans every year or something like that yeah. Starbucks is more robust and that they say look will be able will cover your entire college you know course load is long as you continue to work. Here and so force and they need to do dead beat a whopping 72 point 5%. Left their food service or hospitality. Gigs last year mentioned that your running company. And 72% of your employees quit turn over side. I mean that's the cost associated with that. It is going to be cheaper to pay a higher wage and allow 72% turn over to say about what it cost you how long does it takes eight your hiring. Somebody who worked cashier as a cashier McDonald's your hiring of the least I mean it takes a while to trade them yeah I. I'd be cares if if any of our listeners are in the the food services industry I'd be curious how long it takes to lac. To get someone trained up for those positions Texas at 63566. I would imagine it's probably. Somewhere in the range of 46 weeks to get someone you know trained up. But again which you in that industry you have so much turn over just because. Eight you can be deal with a lot of young people maybe they move their interest changes they've you know they've fallen in love with someone and stupidly move across the country or something like that. A lot of hammering college right in and they you work until the semesters over and an eagle Coleman and they work someplace else until the summer. Yes I did you you've got a a workforce that largely is mobile. You know for those businesses and so. I just I don't think you ever gets anywhere near normal retention rates for bullies now you know it I just think it's seasonal and industry the industry is right with turn over and that's not an change I think it's just the nature of the beast it's it's kind of like you just look who's available to take those jobs and a lot of times it's people who are you know looking for a temporary position it's it's not necessarily someone. Who's looking for anything long term in I think that's what pay structure the way it is that's why the you know the benefits are structured the way they are. If Starbucks do some things did try to change. Mean I don't think you're ever gonna get close to the you know seventy or 80% retention actually year to year. Carolina. So. So I have to pick a movie. Oh it's it's is it moving it's Monday it would seem that one blockers last week I did last but it wasn't. I checked my own about six times so that's that's that's the deeds that he is how often to check the time. Six times for a what do you think in this week will hear my choices Oca Rampage. This isle of dogs. Chappaquiddick. I love dogs who is 91%. Score I've heard good things on isle of dogs. These are you saw about yet until I saw a very good things about it I haven't seen it but it's getting rave reviews ironic question about the dogs. Not in line of and it's animated it's an enemy. Is is that I know nothing about it as its second and so it it is actually about dogs. I think it's not like lord of the flies not being about a award of flies and are right now I'll not say either that Chappaquiddick incident scores well 79%. I know what you're gonna see next week. Super troopers to. All yes comes out on Friday saw the promo for it looks good really looks good if he had it if you're dumb enough to watch it. He can't be the highest in the I don't know if you'd you have to kind of dumb yourself down but it looks it looks outstanding. We are tech's number 63566. That make me bow to lose their virginity. On the night of the problem. So it's American pie for women for women and it was. Is it only had a few yachts but on the whole. Easy the average. Really act like. That that's how I evaluate him movies like if if I'm distracted enough to check my watch then it's it's not due to wanna check my watch six times. Allow you. And I Canada and is not a lot of good sound you know good movie I check my watch three cuts. And a good what I'll I'll go through somewhere I don't check there's others where the worst of the ones we have a debt first 45 minutes were like okay how much more as tired as us and quietly kicks in but. I've folks it's Barry Armstrong in am joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lots ski with your legal exchange quick tip of the day were talking today. About the differences between revoke global and irrevocable trusts. Todd what is the biggest difference between. Revolt bubble and irrevocable trusts probably the most commonly asked question never. Probably is and first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust its not like just one mine call and so that's what makes it hard to Germany. Let me at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only trusts now the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of an irrevocable trust with a revoke of trust in the really biggest differences. The irrevocable trust protector acids from the arsenal the Reebok of trust never will so why would somebody user revolt global trusts. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or what may well or lots of wealth and and their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home so how much money you have to happy if you like we define rich force I don't ask. For 10000059. The estate tax laws as high as they've the exemptions have gone as high as they are I'd say you know 34 million dollars or less you'd probably still going to be considering an irrevocable trust if you're over 860. Well we're talking about the FMI international fund is that right. That's right yet the focus portfolio and more in person or large blend category here recently reopened to new investors in April it closed last may. Very capacity conscious. Hi active share. Very high bar for stocks that are in the portfolio good risk adjusted results. Looking at this portfolio what makes them unique what makes him stand out against their competition. Well it is the focus on. You know roughly 25 to 35 or so stocks. In the portfolio makes it stand out from the benchmarks the big thing to know about despondent investors have to pay careful attention to it that it edges it. Currency exposure. Currency other than US dollar civil heads that currency exposure back to US dollars. Over the very long term hedging it actually. You come out of bed head by hedging with less volatility but he can lead to. Either each kill and the performance over a one year period or a big headwind. Encountered headwind and when he seventeen such results relative to an edge peers look poor but if you factor in the fact that it had just its currency. On the did have a great year in week seventeen but but but perfectly good result. And done in some senses the seeming down here between seventeen creates an opening for investors who understand what they could get with it on. Looking at this fund obviously it's an international funds are gonna have holdings from all over the world but is there any place in particular that they tend to focus on. Most frequently. Yes great question they focused primarily on the developed markets. Multinational companies. They went through a process of bedding. Accounting practices that all kinds of the investor protections across the globe. And are very reticent about investing companies to look Wheldon mainline China. As well but Russia that you won't see firms. From those countries in the portfolio that distinguishes it from a lot of international fund. So that's another distinctive in addition to currency hedging. A lot of international funds will have significant holdings in China. So it if you already have an international allocation in your portfolio that you want something distinctive it's going to give something different. It's very different in and I would face three respects one as the focused portfolio to is the currency hedge and three is the avoidance of stock. Double file in China. Alec looking at this fund obviously it sounds like there's you know it's it's a fairly unique fund would you pay in terms of expenses. For the privilege of investing in. Yet the expenses relative to actively managed peers are competitive stable. The expense ratios of both the app on my international the institutional shares rake in the second cheapest and help those 77 basis points for the that's a mine institutional there have been among the 100000 dollars. The retail shares of much more modest than minimum investment of 2500 dollars and paid 91 basis points per year or zero point 91%. And that ranks of below the peer group beat him. Good Alex thank you again for joining us today we appreciate. Alec Lucas from Morningstar talking about the FM RI international fund the ticker on that if you do want to look it up. Is FAM. I'd GA acts you know I usually don't. Pay for the hedging a I usually just if on the invest internationally. I do with the currency risk being in because. You pay for that. Privilege if you want to fund you do it is that it there's Costa. You have to understand that when you buy an. On the other thing is remember that the hedges don't always necessarily work in your favor if you have a year like last year where the dollar weakened significantly in their heads differently. You end up with a year of underperformance of this fund compared to its category in the last year it under performed by about 10%. However if you look at this fund over the last decade OK go back to around since inception in 2011. Its outperform by about 40% so it's you know it. In some cases it's licensed to but then again it's it's an interest in portfolio for an international investor because it's so concentrated. In a small number of stocks. They don't forget to vote in our poll today should congressmen be eligible for federal pensions this of course. All related to the fact that Paul Ryan's gonna walk away who about an 85000 dollar pension. When he retires in January. The market is having a pretty good rally today where the Dow is up 201 points we're gonna talk about Tesla. Because darn it their shares are down 3%. Were also covering the story about E. Coli. Seems like there's a bunch of bad eggs hi everybody it's burying chuck with you here on Marathon Monday. And it is kind of peculiar chock that Tesla. It would be down nine dollars or 3%. On a day with the market's rally. Yeah I think that the big thing that you continue to see with Tesla. Is that. Yet you on must give that the new law must take it the way and and I think the issue with the company where you're CEO is a rock star in one of the major reasons why people invest in your company is that if your CEO says or does something. That doesn't match up with expectations. And it could either pay in if it does next matchup with expectations and it's better than expected rate Stockton surges did back in 2014 and fifteen. But this year it's kind of been a top foreign forum and I don't know you want to have the best you know last month or so here. But he said on Friday he said hey we're going to be profitable in the third and fourth quarter we don't need to raise money. Market doesn't believe this I would is that why the stocks down I got so. But he why wouldn't imported the stock do on Friday his AV he said this on Friday morning. And also in two days to Monday it's down it's at 291 dollars a share stock was pretty much flat on Friday. You know it didn't really move either way some people over the weekend decided peaceful baloney. Could be. You know I haven't seen any other news on them this morning though I haven't Vietnam still not sure you know I think there's a lot of skepticism because they are one thing Altai it's not mentioned in the story were reviewing that. Two of the top financial people treasurer in the CFO I think you've quit in the last six months. And I think that's a big issues that you've seen you know. Really the leaders of the financial team of kind of moved on from this company and I think that that's something that's an issue also you did see. Another tweet from Moscow late Friday. Talking about how his desire to try to automate the processes that tassel was a mistake and they need to bring more people and people are expensive you know you talk about that it did they were highly robotic in the robotics didn't work yet and and I think you know they. The other thing that I have a problem with with tests on the long run is you on says look I wanna sell 400000. Model three sedans freer the model threes the lower cost one though most of those still end up in the 4555000. Dollar range. The problem is. That many sedans just aren't bought anymore we've we've covered a bunch of stories in the last couple weeks bad GM cut yesterday and production Ford closing factories that produce sedans. Americans are buying crossovers now. People what happens if gas goes to four bucks again I'll also contessa as it looked pretty good thing. Do you think gas going to four bucks again on no I don't but it it the I guess that's the wild card in the equation in here's the like who the heck knows or gas or here's the other questions of gas goes to four bucks a gallon mean. Do you buy 50000 dollar vehicle. Don't you we'd have to buy a organs. Where we were at the average and we gonna find fifty grand I know that's the thing it's I go to them and say OK great you know the gonna go buy a 22000 dollar Honda Civic which by the way the new civics. Also have to say it was behind when the other day and they look like phenomenal news stars. Anyway let's move on to an E. Coli. Like you are losing weight just contract E. Coli in did paddy yet equally leaked Romaine lettuce. It's rubbing her atlas. Something as simple as that yeah this is the CDC has come out and said that Romaine lettuce that was grown around Yuma Arizona. Is the cause of an E. Coli outbreak that is at 22 people to the hospital made thirteen more sick throughout eleven states including Connecticut including Connecticut Susie made its way up to the East Coast here. And the health officials have also said that these bad heads of Romaine lettuce have also ended up in Montana in you talk. And so the CDC is recommending. That anyone who purchased this chopped Romaine lettuce. The role of the L lettuce out in order to avoid ending up with eagle whole life how do you screw up eggs. I give in in what way like putting a number of. Well even cooking I psyche of the it's pretty hard to scrub expeditious is 200 million eggs have been recall what they do need to fix it. Yeah they fix and they put him back out there and you just remove the potential Salmonella and then they go back out there. The these this is another one I didn't hit New England that day Ian. 22 illnesses Salmonella poisoning from eating bad eggs ain't like I'm wondering like what happened they get warm and and get distributed in. Well the big things if you cook eggs properly and fully all the way through then Salmonella immediately it can't survive those temperatures anyway so. The issue though is if let's say that you're doing a you know eggs over easy or something like that her coach day. You're not necessarily cook me at the same temperature so it's a risk on that front and if you like your real hard to pay great no problem you can do whatever you want just about physical cook off. But if you're not necessarily do in the severe eating it raw that's where these people have your if your like an egg nog person or something like that you know it did potentially doesn't end up well for you so. You know it's the somewhat of a problem here trying to figure I don't know how many eggs the US goes through. But I'm gonna continue to take that information out. It looks like I'm going to seek Chappaquiddick and less voters in the second hour of our show change the polls every Monday. My wife and I go and watch a movie and our choices this week are Rampage isle of dogs in Chappaquiddick. And Chappaquiddick is winning out big time. On our text line our text line number by the weighs 63566. If you've never texted us before. Carter I'd put my name in first but tell me which movie I need to go see tonight the three eligible movies or Rampage isle of dogs and Chappaquiddick. This by the way is fascinating which is why am go back to this egg story. June oh and guess what year the US had the most eggs per capita that we. And I'd be recent because not a per capita Oprah cap per capita laws say seventy. 851945. The average American 8404. Eggs per person. Now keep in mind that doesn't mean just exit could be eggs that are included in cost are you know big cakes baked goods and things like that lead down to now 245 extra person in a given year. And while eggs are good for after work out exceed all and I keep hard boiled eggs line around household time. Did tell you get the physique that I not enjoy today to protest a quick way to get protein in yeah if you've done a hard rigorous work out. Yeah bill and and eats makes. So maligned meals are killing the motorcycle does that politically it. Yet it's if it's a real problem and that millennial was they eight are buying motorcycle and awesome it is alien. The the motorcycle sales were down. They are and in particular Harley's feeling this burden quite a bit because the motorcycles that Mullen deals are buying tend to be imports either of the Hondas of BMW's they're not buying Harley's for one reason other whether it's the style of dumb. Me a bit. They they simply aren't buying them Harley had all kinds of problems trying to market to millenniums they haven't figured it out you know it's it's a real issue for them and you've seen it reflected the problem is my generation likes the world die. Yeah it's it in you've seen reflected in Harley stock prices well you know this is a company that five years ago if you go back to April 14 so about four years ago. Harley stock was trading at 73 dollars a share today it's down to 42. Who you know like they're being priced the PER Harley right now is under fourteen suits being priced as a low to no growth stock at the moment. And it's it's something where it's a phenomenal US company they just can't figure out how to sellable O'Neal's rethink if the problems. I don't think millennial want the traditional biker style I think that's a big. Thing is they dangling noose you think differently about cars to the eight when when I was young. I wanted and I drove a Porsche right in in in cars were important to note that there and Porsche. And and I at a motorcycle at a Honda 350 an advocate that kind of stuff was important. When I look at my double Eagles and I say mine I've got five kids Beimel the phrase my millennial is a great one I don't Bible knows they and their mind right I'm pretty sure. My precious and and none of the market didn't see the naked careless about cars in none of them have ever on a motorcycle. Motorcycles it's it's just it's it's one of those things that's very hitter missed what they're trying to do a lot of these motorcycle companies. They're potentially trying to look at some of these subscription based products immortal what courses do and actually you know mom and portion actually found some decent success on that front where they take care of all the maintenance the inserts and everything huge pay regular monthly fee. So there's there's talk that that might be something that works. But I think more labels. You know they also ethical I don't view motorcycles dangerous rightly so yeah he's it is significant part dangerous and riding in a car you're going to play it safe and motorcycles does seem like too much of a danger I think from what or millennium only times do you see these videos of you know guy riding a motorcycle car doesn't seem just absolutely destroy you know just moving over and I am like that happening and it's just it's dry it's it the. I gotta tell you I drive I wasn't disappointed that none of my kids wanted motors didn't bother. Mean it was because I I finally got over to my motorcycle after an accident. And let us know what you think about the stories we discuss your due to the financial exchange radio network. So Netflix is gonna report earnings tonight as I understand. I think they're coming on for thirty summit that they do yeah the so they'll report there earnings that. How many times have we talked about. Who should of bought. Netflix. Net I should've bought Netflix apple Cullen only stuck at least like Disney. Remember way it would like five years ago talking about all the Disney should by no talks at Disney we've talked about apple Amazon I think we've got a pretty much any tech company out there and say hey you guys should have bought Netflix some point. Well anyway we're gonna do trivia based on Netflix. What is the name of the failed company. Is accompanied it failed. And they passed up the chance to buy Netflix in the year 2002000. He could've bought Netflix. Yeah it's this this one's a big regret arresting pro all eyes and lord anyway. I mean indeed trivia by the way is sponsored by dollar deals in the first listener. To. Have the correct answer to that question acknowledge it's a tough questions IE you're gonna figure that one out and girl. The tough question but you win a fifty dollar gift certificate. To the obvious and when Amare friends dot chi he. Texted me on Friday night's pay have been clean trivia and I'm not winning. You know you'd like hundred entrants every day. Did anybody got to be quick you gotta be that to be Smart. And yet to be fast did you have to give you a Google you will lose because you won't be quick enough and it's and it what is the name it's a. Company that failed you'll remember the company he would when you win when you see the name of the copier and hole. Whole place should add that that if they passed up the chance to buy Netflix in the year 2000. Our again our text number 63. 566. If you've never played trivia before you've never texted the show yet put my name the first time all. In my name of course is bury. But let us know would what you think hey. If have you filed your taxes I did hear about human it found that yet although 82 shoes. My wife you don't know extension well my my wife was frantic. On Friday absolutely frantic hunt for in and to her credit. She found an item that had been missed on on our tax for. And hope we can get this done we have to file by Mondays and companies on Monday to Tuesday. On on body and she's a frantic about it. And we'll money we've got the Wii ailment. I'll wait not a big bat reef we are not waiting refund and I finally said. Relax file an extension. And then Google Talk the accountant in me. And work out whatever it is the issues if it's something to do. With the best tax deduction he she thinks he missed a tax deduction shoving to get him on the ball. So she's been trying to get an account on the phone this weekend is kind of like forget it did not happen again so the name of the form. The news of the number for the formed to file an extension is 4868. And if you're in the same position. Filed for me it literally go to Google and punch in good numbers 486 at the PDF of the formal show up. You signed the darn thing humility now if you all money. And we do all money up. What I told him to do this and said honey if if we'll money pay a little bit more than we still feel a thousand bucks on your taxes that. 11100 dollars if you're in this position because you don't wanna do is filed warm but not pay your tax like bill yet. Extension is not an excuse to not pay your taxes until. October it simply gives you six months to complete the filing you still have to pay anything that you think you're going to pay. By the traditional filing deadline which in this case is the seventeenth of April. And in so you file the extension you pay your taxes. And the worst case scenario said is you pay a little bit more than what you're told your liabilities. And you end up filing your taxes we get the money back it might take six weeks to get the money back but at least you're not getting in a penalty situation yup definitely should not frantic about trying to get these things done by tomorrow because. I don't care where the taxes done by CPA. Registered agent or H&R block it's awfully tough to get the answers done by two more. Why why Scioscia might push the envelope you know it's not easy is it that's my opinion. I thought this is a good idea what I heard. And and it's the is considered to be the gun of the future. In basically chuck it's a gun. That will only operate. In. Its being operated by the owner in other words the the gun would be able to say well that's trucks out of hand print. And on and let him shoot the gun or it's very Armstrong's hand print not gonna let him shoot the but nobody wants to get behind this as a pride in and for the life of me I can't understand why Smith & Wesson didn't embrace a stack. Don't assume that there's a couple reasons if you are a gun maker yeah column the number one reason why you wouldn't is because of the liability if the gun does not fire the way it's intended to. So let's say that I have someone break in in my house and I have one of these Smart weapons that recognizes my hand printer my fingerprint. And let's say that for whatever reason it thinks hey that's not chuck who's picked up his gun at someone else and I go to fire my weapon and it doesn't fire. Then all of a sudden there's the potential liability because the gun didn't do what it was supposed to do you but what about conversely. The liability where somebody takes the gun out of your house and fires until some. When have we held gun manufacturers liable for that and and they buy what what would they be if if they had if the gun was stolen by someone. Now you know. Vegas is not the gun manufacturer's fault it was stolen the NRA's very much opposed to strike but they are put. And he gave look at it is kind of the end of gun ownership. I just look at it like we we won our technology. To positively influence our lines in many ways. I think that trying to rely on technology to solve the gun violence problem isn't addressing the core part of the problem which is like wide as this happened to begin with him you know like. Look technology it can be a fix for some things I don't know if it is the fix to stop gun violence from recurring I don't disagree I just thought. Like for if you think about Sturm Ruger I think they're in bankruptcy. Unity you look at Smith & Wesson their stock is just in terrible for you so if you're Peter Smith & Wesson wouldn't you as a stockholder I'm thinking and just thinking financially not as an NRA member in that. But as a stockholders with a glass and I'm thinking to myself. Everybody has to get a new gun. Or has to get their gun retrofitted we're gonna. So that that the fear of the NRA is that the only guns that would be required and are ones that have certain technology that the government approves and then it would kind of be a back door and to further regulation or Y I in which I by the way. I think he had erase fears are well founded. I just think it's a old Perry hasn't paid his taxes we're gonna revoke his gun ownership be anywhere and turn off his gun and I think that. Right it. Oh yeah it is just I think you've I have paid my taxes. I just I look at the problem of gun violence I don't know if it's a problem that's a technological solutions so much is Hayley what we actually addressed why this is happening on us. Rates on us you know it's the technology can solve some things he can't solve effort thing Merrill. May I just think it's. Again I'm I'm looking at it differently that you guys are up and I'm just looking at and in my caddie make money on it Smith & Wesson which is based in Massachusetts. Is it not supportive of the technology. I mean if you're again you talk about someone who should be responsible gun owner if you keep your guns locked up in one place Amylin a different place and you don't have a need for a Smart guy on the problem is a lot of owners don't necessarily do that. Markets up Dow is up a 182 points when we come back we'll have the answer to our trivia question. We'll be talking about gold gold should be rally this type of environment and it's not. Unaffiliated I folks it's Barry Armstrong in am joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lots ski with your legal exchange quick tip of the day were talking today. About the differences between revoke global and irrevocable trusts. Todd what is the biggest difference between revolt global and irrevocable trusts probably the most commonly asked question ever. Probably is that. And first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust its not like just one line call in so that's what makes it harder let me let me at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only tourists know the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of and your vocal trust with a revoke of trust them. The really biggest differences. The irrevocable trust what protector acids from the national. The Reebok aboard trust never will so why would somebody user revolt global trust. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or not the wealth or lots of wealth and and their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home so how much money you have to have me you'd like we define rich force I don't ask. 10000059. With the estate tax laws as high as they've the exemptions have gone as high as they are saying you know 34 million dollars or less you're probably still going to be considering an irrevocable trust if you're over 860. So you guys are old enough to remember the original Netflix. I've not talked about when you use now stream it on your television. But Netflix used to be a company. Where you paid subscription fees. And you would order movies they would mail the tea in either accident. The dvds the little red envelopes you do remember sued you know how many subscribers they still have to that platform I had no idea 3.4 million no kidding they why would you do. No idea. By no idea easy do you get better movies that show it's that the thing about it with that service is you can get movies that are available on their streaming platform now so theory you can get different movies used to pay extra for. It's it's completely separate service from the streaming. Lol yeah if they they separated them they they originally were gonna renamed that service Qwikster and there's this huge outrage at the back to 2012 for 2011 and but so. It still is I forget exactly what it's called. At this point is I used to see him in the office every all dvd Netflix now. It every Monday you would see stack everybody would bring their movies in on Monday. Yup and he beats back of them and they outgoing mailbox. And now you never see. So they they still have three platforms for it there's one that's for 99 a month you get one discounted the timing you can do to discs a month now. There's one that's 799 where you can have one disk out at a time in unlimited per month in the last one is 119. Or might just be someone who even wants you know videos that are different from what they get on. Streaming rate very new to Blu-ray disc so the Blu-ray won is a higher price point that instead of being for 99799. And 1199. If you want Blu-ray vs dvd it's 599999. In 1490. So did you have a blockbuster in your town again we did it was right next to the Stop & Shop where I had my first job in Lou we used to have one minute we under the small town and we had a blockbuster in our town. Well in 2000. Netflix. Was offered to blockbuster blockbuster could have purchased Netflix for fifty million dollars that we now wanted to sell Rick. And net we're Netflix is now 130 billion or thirty billion dollars annually. Blockbuster could have bought them for fifty dollars. Now blocked him after fifty million dollars. If they're practically did you blockbusters they they have ten remaining franchise disease is that men its it. And Netflix is worth a locked. The winner on this trivia question was Michael from Hanover Massachusetts Michael takes away fifty dollar gift card W isn't obvious does have five locations in the Boston area. Including the newest location in Braintree can poster next special event Abu Dhabi those. There's the obvious dot com from a new information. And reservations I think one the tragedies of blockbuster going away and the fact that we watch you know all of this stuff on streaming now. People are embarrassed by what they watch anymore it used to be if you had let's say you went in and you've got some chick flick romantic movie at blockbuster. The guy behind the counter to a dealer register you gotta take it to the register the guy behind the counter or give me the look like that you're gonna watch and you know you're watching made Manhattan again for the third time this month spyware from experience chuck. We've all been there right now whereas now if you decide hey I wanna watch you know can't hardly waiter something like that it's like. I don't know what's gonna judge me on this and I miss that judgment I mrs. Gold AEA it as promised that they need we'll have a conversation regarding gold and you know looking at gold now it's up three bucks today. But you've given the trials and tribulations around the world think about what's going on in Syria. Evening about North Korea you think about the Middle East in general gold isn't how it's Utley and gold would lose the top like 1819100 bucks and. We got up around 19100 and what what's interesting is that it. You know again needed it isn't really rallying the way you would expect. With some of the concerns that are out they're both about inflation in what's going on right you know in the Middle East and so forth its theological. It's very strange to see something like this. And I just peace it's it it's not I will say that and I don't necessarily have. You know any idea what a particularly. Is but I think it's two things I think a lot of the gold money is gone in two crypto currency. And probably some video and I think the other issues every time gold rallies people who look at and say well maybe a despite ten year treasury thirty year treasury. Is a rising interest rates. Are bad for rule. Generally stick in yeah we're forecasted to have at least two more hikes this year right that's gonna be headwind for gold. Yet it's just the the fascinating thing is you know gold is moved up about. Twelve to 15% in the last year but the dollar's move down about twenty sewage still isn't quite matching up there. The other that the fear of interest rate hikes could be something that keeps a lid on it somewhat. But IE I have question is how high the Fed can get in the long run I think they're gonna have to move more quickly this year and they expect to do but I just don't know how long they can sustain you and we still think that years. More inflation then what's being reported in using it to do start to get reported. I think the next couple months to be trickling through and knows that jobs report the job I reports. So I think the headline number in terms of why we're not why you had you know 108000 people instead of 170. I think it's because there's always so many people that you can hire that are actually higher balls LP are still. But again those people are coming back in no matter what they're not they're not comment there unemployable what I will what I will tell you right now of the prediction for four rate hikes this year is now up to 32% a month ago worms are a week ago it was a 24% in Q what is it for three hikes three exit 46 vs 45 and two -- is down 16% vs 2.4 percent so 33 still had the game three is still the heaviest favorite but were that the four hi team is gaining in a hotel in new. I think the Fed's behind the curve on the spot but they have to go almost every meeting they start Greg is it the may June August September November and December so my thought is they usually September and December they that's a great good that's tonight. That's what it takes common. I don't. Yes I think IC thing's fallen down you know you look at real state. Very housing slowed down. I would argue that's not necessarily a bad thing or leaves a bad thing necessarily but it's the number of transactions are slowing you look at the bank earnings eight. There for how much of that is due to lack of inventory verses and you know and here's the thing that even with these elevated prices build their Stoller put the shovel of no but again aid part of it is a lack of construction workers you know all of a sudden you've got to pay people more now you get out there and say gee you know now we finally get something moving again. You know so I just. I look at it and I just. I don't know I keep in the back my mind that I think there's still four points or three more hikes coming at this. You worried about oil at all oil's traded at 66 bucks moving up or down. And going higher. Because that's a headwind. You get oil at eighty bucks in gas at 350 gallon you're slow things down again I think I think there's room to run on wage I think wages are moving faster and it didn't realize they eat great you get over a wage increasing year given it all back of the gas put at least you know pain more. Where you are pain would be if you got a return as it did get in terms of your overall take home pay though down. You know if your wages are moving up in accordance with that. It's it's effectively knocked it in a benefit but not lose anything you know use the thing I worry about is. If you look at march consumption numbers march consumption numbers were made numbers they'd meet tight numbers. It marches that time of year we are not supposed to be burning much gasoline we burned a ton. So we get to real high consumption levels in May because that's the beginning of the night Pete you know Memorial Day weekend right everybody's goal and somewhere. And then they gave Golan somewhere every weekend until labor downright driving activity picks up the boats are in the water. I I worry about 350 gallon gas. I don't think it at that you could see a short term spike up they didn't but I don't think he can be long term because you have so many different wells that you can just turn out at this point you know the the thing about these fracking wells as they turn over so quickly that you get in schooled up in a month or two. Instead they get the if you get to seventy. You have a ton of new production come on line domestically. Yeah I I do. I just I look at how quickly you can turn these wells around now compared to the older style wells must be Killen and as well the fact that it's at 66 and they can't pump. You know allowed imagine the EU look at the countries that are. Just because of politics can't pump. It says. It wreaks Havoc on their content people Venezuela got tons of oil and their citizens are hunger news literally hungry I mean the the US right now is doing north of ten and a half million barrels day even just in the last month we've gone from ten point three to ten point five million that's 200000 additional barrels you know like but that's at 66 ducks so -- when it gets a seven great lady again I think there's room to run in the US as far as oil production goes we'll see speaking about room to run and speaking about cars or be joined by Tim Stevens in the next segment. He's from CNET road show and we're going to be reviewing the 2019. VW. Jetta 12019. Cars come into the show since July on a used to be like. Back but as a kid you 2019 until 2019 usually July to September now. So we can eat them by that's actually Smart thing to do. Nagged by the 2019 in July. It's one of the auto makers do what furloughs in the summer they use that as a chance to get new machinery and all the new molds never thing and get round here inventory gaps would what are inventory they China. You know I don't know how I don't in the little house I'd I'd be curious is this what. With the win numbers are because they I think they're having a tough time adjusting. To the changing tastes of American consumers and to your point we don't want. Civilians anymore who won suvs so. Inventories of actually dropped tonne in the last year they were building up an awful lot through the middle of last year. The big thing that took him back down to manageable level when hurricanes all the cars and pay your place today and it was NASA half a million cars yeah so so well what you saw right now auto inventory levels the level that you look at is the inventory to sales ratio. And right now that's about 2.5 which is pretty healthy kind of middle of the road. You to gun up to 3.3. Back last year and then pretty much you look at August number verse the September number. They just pretty much state took all those cars that got totaled and just. Moved right off the lot the new ones with the inventory levels like that's going to be hard to get a bargain as. Well you could find some around against sedans you can find bargains as senators tried buying a Ford F 150 united about credit you try to get a pick up burn SUV. Good block not happening. Anyway if you're a student at VW Jetta that is the car we will be reviewing next on the financial exchange. The skewered Barry and join our exclusive club this is a financial exchange radio network. Tim Stephens from CNET roadshow joins us now here to talk about the 29 team Volkswagen Jetta and Tim thank you for joining us program. Tim Soviet new Jetta first of all winter we get this 2019 models showing up in showrooms. We should look to see especially hitting coach is before too long probably toward the end of summer we should start to see them sitting there we just got our first drive a couple expect which means they're you're not on production. So let's start from the outside in in terms of how the car looks how does it stack up against the competition these news. Looks quite nice we were honestly not big fans the last generation -- it was just a little bit too tame for our line expletive and it looks quite nice to get a more aggressive front and and some out east styling cues as well definitely pushing more up market and the outgoing Jenna. In orbit. When we go under the hood any differences from the previous model. You know what we're looking at here is a new one point four literature or four cylinder was about a 150 horsepower. On the boards would get thirty miles per gallon in the city and forty on the highway. Which is pretty good for a car besides that's the only motor that Volkswagen announced this or that probably will be more trims coming. But yeah uttered GO ivory which should have or on to a and twenty horsepower. But again thirty in the city reforma on combined should be pretty good numbers or are. But once you get inside the vehicle what changes are in store in terms of the the cabinet and to here. A lot of new technology again and so there's borrow from Al including Volkswagen physical pockets it's something we've seen in conflict Audi a four and 86 before. We're basically being targets clusters replaced by an inch LCDs would it dynamically re configurable really flashy looking he'd get navigation in their. Looks quite nice that paired wouldn't you inched touch screen which would be in the center of the dashboard. I'm also extremely they're pairing a lot more things would be chief Bob so as you go any figure radio preferences your seat preferences you're eating purposes even. All those things will be tied back to the chief rob so if you have one key yourself you like as another one Carlo reconfigure itself so that it's built like it to your cart becoming into. Oh that would be nice dance that's kind of cool I like that a lot. Now what we're is this vehicle stacked up now in terms of its competitors who are the biggest competitors and where do you think it ranks against those. The public stacking up against on the court properly in the US camera things like that little bit smaller but ultimately took kind of placed into the performance and should be back in court that's against those. But honestly in terms of the interior capabilities and so the technology we've seen we think it could have the edge in that front. And with the new and she'd be architecture that this is built on which is Volkswagen's new chassis that they're building all the cars up. It handles quite nicely too sore pretty eager to get that stack up against those cars he would accept. His performance in terms of sales looks like an astute to turn things around that's been lagging a bit this'll about a 1151000 of these last year. Which is of the lowest so they penal in years. What's the odds of the price range that you're looking at on the new jet in terms of starting kind of from that the bass stripped down model to the top end. Or we're gonna look at Europe right around 181000 are going forward and then if you look at all the bells and mentally problem be pushing up around 30000 dollars were very very well equipped Jenna. We don't have formal pricing just yet to deprive your little bit different when they get negotiation but that's worth about war expectant. What's the typical track record on maintenance for VW's these days. Book so it's been doing quite well. Recently they've definitely had to make sure they got everything covered with everyone watching them very closely attributed of course. But ultimately we've seen very good result from a reliable and it went in that car and spoke here in the US well at a factory in Chad do get so that's a good. At the bit about. Good Tim thank you very much for the time today. Tim Stevens from CNET Roche are talking about the 2019 VW Jenna I know the people like to move towards these crossovers now. But this what I come back to there's good cheap vehicles if you look at sedans these days target one pretty well equipped for 25 grade point five and you get an average of 3335 miles a gallon I mean you've turned an engineering pretty attractive you know it may be made in the US but whose design in Germany. And obviously they've you know as as to mention it had to do a lot of work to come back from that whole mission scandal that pretty well. They they they seem to you know that I need these. My observation it has spent a boatload of money both in terms of a you know make better cars and be paying money out to wad defrauded VO buyers and in dealers and so that they paid you know they did make some companies who'll. You know stick their head in the sand in and deny it to the end. They did the they were they were cot and they came out and he wrote the checks and they bought the cars than. You know it they still like darn good vehicle if that's a thing if he comes back to the quality of the product. Yet as it in again you you talk about the quality that you typically get from a German engineered vehicle it's very technically sound very. You know you have good fit and finish everything's you know well put together generally typical all the cars are pretty well put together and unity that you kinda have to be you when you buy car. Like back in the east. You wanna buy an American car. You just were not leave your resting while they're in the show. We'll be in even you look at some of the qualities is that the foreign manufacturers had originally Kia you've stepped all kinds of problems with the quality of their vehicle and retire I used to rent though and I swore after renting them I'd never while they were awful and today they're ranked some of the highest performing vehicles when it comes to quality. You know so it's everyone's kinda had to step up their game and I think part of it is because of the advent the Internet. It was easy part of it's also robotics he's there using more robot that is he says some of its robotic begin we see you one must have been away for robots from the production of his vehicles. That's ironic. Right. Here's a guy that. You know who it was really dedicated his whole thesis was we gonna use robots in less humans to make our cars. And he flopped turns out he can't do you know he can't you can't and and they're still have a major production brought by the way. Tesla shares down even more now than when we reported on it at the beginning of the show there are down about nine bucks. Now they're down ten dollars and 77 cents a shady trading to 89 per share. And that's on a day by the way folks with the Dow's up a 190 points the S&P is up sixteen. A good day on Wall Street but it's a bad day for Tesla shareholders. Thanks for listening we'll see tomorrow right here on the financial action.
