Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. Posted on the Christmas holiday only a couple more days of work before we get there. And we continued to digest this tax bill and and try to figure out what the the meaning is going to be what the impact it's going to be. Both folks and businesses are going to be digging into that today. Couple other quick piece of news that we'll get to off the top of Mike obviously what is this tax bill still the focus of everyone at this point yep only. It think doc about right now I'll go redo our rear closely. Closing in on a budget deadline to so Tamar help Gary you divide us are there is. The gave supposedly one month extension in place. That could potentially be passed. But it remains to be seen if they're able to want to get that done before. Tomorrow's budget deadline expires couple quick piece of news that will dig into lodged before we head over to tax reform. Third quarter GDP in the US we got the third reading for that number they revised every month just to knock continued to improve the accuracy. 3.2 percent vs 3.3 expected pretty much right in line. And expectations are no big surprises there. The big one is going to obviously be once we get readings on this holiday shopping season. That's going to be their real agenda is in it everything I've seen is that it's been a little bit stronger than anticipated as you usually see a little bit of a dip right after Black Friday and then it picks back up around Christmas you haven't seen as sort of dip obviously that it be winners and losers but so far it's looking like a pretty robust shopping season perhaps one of the biggest we've seen over a decade. Also a story that we touched on briefly yesterday ate chipotle restaurant in Los Angeles. Is receiving scrutiny from health officials. After the chain reported that a number of its workers were sick with nausea vomiting and diarrhea same as some of their costume. Yeah gas so I don't know why they can't get out of their own way on this. But it seems like whatever amount they got a new triple incident yeah in and I don't know what it is I mean they they supposedly cleaned up their supply chain and institute better tracking and so forth. Others they they continued to while running into problems this one. I don't know if it's as serious as the ones that we saw previously back in the fall when he fifteen. But look like well when you have. A no issue with health problems. Don't you think that you want to be. Overly cautious and it in an overly. Proactive about making sure that you take care of those keys you can have another outbreak of some kind of disease. Yeah and I know that they focus on local ingredients and bears they have special niche they're trying to attractive but there are other. Chain restaurants that do this that are not facing these issues. What's the with the burger place. 55 guys five guys there's a check paycheck. All these different places that it had. Really none of these issues and it's just issued an error has had a similar problem snares a great example track you know openers the degree to what is in that space they are entirely antibiotic free they are entirely freshly so worst ousting him be good burgers which is apparent fresh source locally sourced ingredients and I've never heard that issue. Now it's it's it's it's a little mind blowing just to CBO kind of that they again that they're still having problems. Well with these kinds of things is it just it it shouldn't be an issue I mean where I mean at this point yet to question if corporate is properly training these employees unsanitary. I don't think that's that's classic gets a supply chain issue. And this this seems more like it was employees is slightly more washing their hands and yeah it and it's been a multiple locations now to. Yeah I am and an IP training issue that's. I don't know what the issues if I mean they could be in some serious dangers there where there and a. Also a a story here that I I found this morning wall up perusing it was originally just on some some small blogs that I got picked up by CNBC this morning actually. Are either of you familiar with what a Long Island ice he is I print of this office. I saw it as yes I I get that far in here left. So this is just a great story so there is a company horrifying attack Iran well it's it's greatly horrifying to there's a company called Long Island iced tea and they do exactly what you would expect people Long Island iced tea in a and it in a bottle and what goes into Long Island iced tea everything sounds like Leo a team whose are different types of booze and Coke. Yeah I I don't recommend it so it's it's pretty much something that is okay here again this is based this is from Google's results okay. It is like Ron right it is to feel everything tequila Gian. Vodka. Rum and triple sec and all in there with a splash of Coke a little lemon juice and some sir I don't know people turn that. So. Again it this is a company that for the last you know five years this is what they've done they've made Long Island iced teas for that it may have company they announced today. Did they are changing their name too long blocked Jeanne corporation because they wanna cash in on the crypto currency craze what happened. Just as a result of changing this name the stock rallied over 200%. Open for trading. That. This is I I I. I've hesitated to go this far but we have now reached the point where this is the dot com bull net reminiscent. It is it's like what are they gonna do you block team to revolutionize the recipe for Long Island iced tea. Yeah this is a minute and heard and it doesn't understand that reference blocked chain is the process used to create bitcoin the crypto currencies that have been trading up thousands and thousands of percent over the last few years. You're right it is really starting to some. No like a bubble. This also brings us to the great was that found while trolling the Internet of the ten biggest dot com flops. Of the early 2000 answer. The number one was pets dot com is obviously had a talking sock puppet who says hey we're gonna sell everything for pets on the line and then. Did in to us on. Yeah I don't have all in one list and and so I'm gonna say ask jeeves is probably on there I don't know how much money they raise but will go to Erica the next one was Webvan dot com. Which I don't remember but Webvan actually. Now was a grocery delivery service. That in the summer of 99 announced they are investing a billion dollars in warehouses. In which made 2060s by 2001. And they were than out of business by July of 2000. So the stock went from somewhere in the range. I don't know exactly where it was up to the company's value one point two billion at its peak. And then was where six cents a share just about a year later. Etoys dot com an online toy retailer. It took out approximately 250 million dollars in debt and never really made any money. I think that was the one if you guys remember this was like the first year that toys were really for sale. Online for Christmas and they did it and I think he is might have been another company but I think he was etoys dot com that you promised Christmas delivery. And then just failed across the board no one got their gifts on time everything was way everything was delayed and get nobody bought toys online for another seven years. Here's a good one talker this this is one that you probably wish you set aren't geocities. And in note that is yeah I remember geocities that is that is game or something what is geocities backs in 91998. Was the third most visited web site behind AOL and Yahoo!. Yeah it had nineteen million visitors a month and Yahoo! bought it. 443 point six billion dollars in January of 1999. Yahoo! stock at that point was trading for 368. Dollars. In geocities was a 117. And geocities finally closed down officially about seven years ago now. It was shuttered by Yahoo!. What are witty and do cipher it was pretty much just like a generic web portal now so was like you know kind of in a while home page very. It was that Oprah. But they also allowed legally make your own crappy website stuff like that it was it was not good go dot com. Go dot com which by the way if you go to ESP and I believe that ESPN web sites are still hosted technically on go get it on ESPN dot go dot com yes it is holes that's what that is that's exactly what it is and so. Disney's at this this web setup back in 1998 in order to compete with Yahoo! and AOL was again kind of a generic web portal. The only remnant of a right now is ESPN it is still hosting espn.com. Even though nothing else exists from go dot com. Flu dot com FL OOZ. Not. What was this okay this is done is reading year there were a number of really good ideas during the dotcom bubble but didn't make it flew his was not one of them. Oh this is fast this is right where we are today blues dot com sold online currency the polls instead of credit cards. After users bought enough clues they could spend the Tower Records Barnes & Noble and Restoration Hardware which is a great company for his company's interest yet you. You get the latest hip hop seat you can go get a book and then you can get a 50000 dollar dining room table to put at all how old are like Amazon. Interesting night I don't understand. Would see what else we have here Kozmo dot com which was. A service that allowed urban customers to order a wide array of products including CDs dvds electronics and snacks and than they would deliver them so pretty much this was is exams on before Amazon just. Didn't work. And and the last one is guarding dot com. Which was worth twenty dollars a share in September of 99. And a year later they cut 40% of their workforce and went out of business a year and a half later on. Dot com boss of me like it feels like we're getting to that point will decline was like why not necessarily pick Wendell these competition are literally just like changing their name in the stock goes up 200%. If it's. I feel like we just have a lot of really dumb people. That see the word block Jane it's an Austin and most didn't like we have like watching zombies now. And a net it is it is definitely some irrational exuberance the receding here it makes means to we have an update on the long island iced tea we region are already out we do so I was I was taking a look at it this morning just I was curious what would happen. So it opened in went above nine dollars a share after being. About two dollars a share previously ya and it is now back down to seven dollars. Not afterwards so they make a quick buck and just just careful people like don't do anything stupid that that's about as far as I can go on this just because that's pretty dumb it just. Doesn't just feel like were at peak dome this right now. Yeah well maybe not we have a stillborn dominance just ago I would like you can always get wars but it it just fuels. Stupid. It's just it's like you're buying a company that previously made drinks that now says they're going to be computer programming company debts are. That's terrified. Anyways quick break here when we come back we're gonna talk about tax reform we'll get down into it in start digging into some of the sectors that are gonna benefit right here on the financial exchange radio network. Well let's talk a little bit about tax reforms your Mike the obviously the bill passing the saintly on a Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Passing the house again yesterday. And so pretty much all systems go for president trump to sign it at this. Correct yeah I mean we are we aren't there at this point and and now we're all kind of diving through the final version traffic to get things on the corporate side treaties it's no real confusion on the corporate side. But on our individual side there's a lot to be worked out there is a whole lot different ends and outs and taxes irked. Going down for some folks that might be going up for some folks it's it's very confused where's the biggest confusion on the individual side in your sons so it in my opinion the biggest confusion just comes from the changes in deductions so you you've got. On the high level you've got the doubling of the standard deduction so that's pretty clear okay used to be able to deduct 121000 dollars and I conduct 24000 as a married couple. That's if you understand but OK if you have kids they used to be the personal exemption meaning you could take off 4000 dollars per person in your household. That's going away that does that offset the doubling in the stand induction. It might get some tax brackets and other cases it doesn't just I don't know I'd not depends how big your family is. I've brackets themselves are changing scene needs to collector incumbency how that'd just things and then. A slew of deductions are changing. That whole bunch from our changing their rates which you can deduct. And something's or does being eliminated entirely so it's it's a lot to be worked through. On the corporates. Out of things one of the the pieces of news that we got yesterday. Few different companies coming out and saying hey look as a result of tax reform going through. We are going to be giving out either one time bonuses or raising some salaries at the low end because we now have the cash to do so. Let's get on this first of all which companies announced which program. So first off I think Boeing was the first one to to come out with this right away and AT&T and Comcast both said they're going to be paying out 1000 dollar bonuses to their workers. Wells Fargo and fifth. Fifth Third Bancorp said they be raising minimum wage. So a whole bunch of companies came out and just did this you know real quickly one time made sound like they had it ready to go and what a Smart PR marketing thing for the. It's like you look at it if you were one of these companies one of the biggest challenges today we know. Is hiring rate and so if you are eighteen tear your Fifth Third Bancorp. You come out and say look we're giving thousand dollar bonuses to a lot of workers. Wells Fargo comes and says look we're bumping our low in workforce from eleven to twelve bucks now or up to fifteen bucks an hour which keep in mind in a lot of states they're gonna have to do anyway because a lot of those states were raising minimum wage but. It is just coming and coming out and you know a big PR things and they were doing it anyway but if you're someone who's sitting there working for Bank of America is at Howard you make in 1213 Rex an hour. Don't you sit there and say. Maybe I should take a look at that Wells Fargo cross the street maybe they have some job openings maybe I should go over there. Yeah yeah yeah absolutely do and I think it's it's really Smart on their parts to be doing this. Even if it ends up being here here's the big question is does this end up being some tiny portion of the tax cut they receive and I would imagine this first. Yeah this first round is going to be okay well yeah we're paying out these thousand dollar bonuses the represents less than one half of 1% the mine were saving taxes. It's really about what happens over the next. Two years even if it's a tiny portion. It doesn't mean it's not good this is like Ari this sometimes you see you know people donate to charity and people say oh he just did that because he wanted to look good. Well charity still got the money like all. I don't care about the reasons why someone does something as long as they do it. It still is making an impact so I've heard people you know come out critically say all this is just opportunistic and a I say what you might be opportunistic they're still paying these people more. Yeah well here's here's where I think it might have impact of the next right we're heading we news retirements were heading into election next year. This this tax bill by and large if you look at you know the polling numbers is relatively unpopular. I'm curious what this does to polling right now that's what I'm curious about is OK somebody gets another you know 10% and their paycheck right after Christmas. Does that change your opinion on the tax bill now well maybe corporate tax cuts weren't such a bad idea. Exact and so. I look at this and again people say we are cynically all the they're just doing this because they wanna look good and what they might be that they might be. But the fact is they are still paying their employees more and it like. I feel like sometimes we miss the forest for the trees here because people say doubled it's it's you know they they they really want to do this war. Here's they don't want to they're still doing it they wanted to do it enough they're actually doing it. Isn't that good enough for a snap so. Clearly you know you have a few county gives you. More of it I mean I think this is just the first wave I think once other companies take a look at the tax bill and you know take a look at the competitors and you with their during years of Seymour these companies and yet we're saving a fair bit on this aberrant -- of the few you know if you boxer employs projects yes of curly some companies coming and saying hey this is good for us. On the downside though a few companies Dylan in some other companies and in that category. Any of being hit because of how much debt they have yes so I mean this is where you get into the intricacies here and it's it's not just a pure tax cut across the board. What you did have here is a lot of the you're allowed to deduct corporations are allowed to deduct pretty much all of the interest that they have on debt right now so you know your your Dell and you just. Spent all this money buying. And edited by last year. Ian C. Do you still deduct all that interest and you've built that and your playing said well yes we're going to be borrowing some fifty billion dollars by it. We gonna be able to duct all of them are taxes so is all built and now they take a look at this sang oh we can only doctor really you know a portion of this going forward. How do we adapt this business to deal with. Yeah and in one thing that could result in is maybe don't have quite as many of these Leveraged Buyouts rag that you previously had and that could be something that ends up being good for workers because typically workers. Or one of the biggest casualties in those situations. We're gonna take a break here when we come back a little bit more digging into to pull and also. What companies are winning the holiday sales season we'll tell you right after this break on the financial exchange radio and. Like this on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter. Time for Wall Street watched couple big gum movers in today's market Mike looking at Bed, Bath & Beyond first and foremost they're down 12% today. How come SI mean they reported a pretty good record they adequate profit of 44 cents a share which is above estimates. Revenue was slightly above forecast in comp sales and well they fell. It was a smaller decline than anticipated really this has to do with guidance as you're heading into the holiday season if you're not in you know if they're not going to be. Really blow on the socks off people then. They're gonna get hits and clearly Bed, Bath & Beyond his field today. Pacific gas and electric big utility out on the West Coast. Down 16%. You don't normally see that from utility yeah and you know this is one of those ones where you user we're talking about corporate earnings and what's happening with a company in terms of their financials this is a different story here so PG NE suspended their dividend. They are a parent company is warning that it could be held liable for the deadly wine country if California wildfires in California really yeah. Those wildfires that have caused more than nine billion dollars in damage. And they haven't determined a cause for the utilities started and targetable bunch of lawsuits over their operations and lack of maintenance on their equipment. In so. I think it's very clear here that the DC EO must know something that we don't hear if they're warning that it could be the case. Not good news for shareholders Nellie about what's really tough new shareholders not good news there. Circling back to Viet chipotle story that we reported on earlier today two poli what did you bullish shares doing right now on the take a quick look here. They reported aid another issue out in. Los Angeles yesterday. To polish shares down not 2% today and this is after being down. About three and a half percent yesterday so 5% slide and a couple days. This company just can't get out of its own way it seems. I'd I am really start to lose. Lose faith in this company. And registered to pay excise tax in order to shipped him to Massachusetts consistency yet there's specific companies and work here but some. Of you go this I have a list of wineries that shipped Massachusetts is a real quick reader I tickled like wine dot com source no you got to. You have to go direct to the island looks like but their whole bunch and because I remember we had. We have excellent a couple of years ago I was there and that was pre Tucker has pre Tucker. Source Gammon and mr. Bledsoe thought that the SO said it was and it was like the day that they were finally able to ship to mask and bring wine to. Will he was in studio all you still out in in Washington I think oddities in town now he was still out of Washington I think at the time and asked them. But it's Mike in terms of who else is picking up you know holiday shopping. You know which market share this season are there companies that are benefiting along with Amazon. Yeah I mean Amazon is not the only one picking up a lot of home improvement companies have been doing really well this year we've seen that been a big spending trend of the last few years but you've got. Home Depot and lows as well as roster is all hit all time highs and their stock prices. But even the best buys in the wal marts are those the strip mall type of places the ones that are not located with any shopping mall. Are still pullen and a lot of traffic the real ones that I am concerned about it the JC Penney warned that it had another terrible holiday season any of those Ron Jon and really ran that company into the ground it is in rough shape. But all those mall anchor stores in evenly like a perils with in American Eagle Outfitters Warren they're gonna have a pretty pretty rough holiday season. And today it's. A lot of those small retailers have been here in a lot of trouble. Yet it's it's certainly seems to be that I mean like but the discounters that TJ Max is you know all those different companies that are not located in the shopping mall I think I have a pretty good years. Yeah they they seem to be in its TJX in particular mean look they're they're based right out of Framingham mass. They seem to would have gotten. What it takes an in figured out that edge they need to compete in this marketplace yeah end it there aren't a lot of companies that he can say that about. You know it's that they're few and far between but TJX. You know largely has been able to do so. Coming up we are going to be joined by Lydia Ramsey from business insider. Perspective this is a great question because two things one the amount you can give away for an IRS purposes is 141000. Today and com 2018 the news is it's gone up to 151000. Seems to go up about every 34 years Emeka by a thousand and our legal guys so. There will be 151000. You can give away. And what that means from an IRS perspective is that you. Do not need to file a gift tax return and you do not need to pay any gift taxes and you will not use up any of your gift tax exclusion. It is an out right freed. 151000. Dollars to. Anybody you want to give it to delight in later as the recipient that's a question out and yesterday you know mom gives their son. 101000 dollars and then that subtle call me settlement on game. A 101000 dollars to acted declared that anywhere from you know absolutely nothing for the recipient and most importantly nothing for the gipper. However the difference is for Medicaid purposes. It will be gate is qualifying transfer. It doesn't matter that it's not taxable for the IRS if you think you can give away 151000 dollars and protect it from the nursing home without creating a five year waiting period. You are incorrect. As promised to Leah Ramsey from business insider joins us now. To talk about Bill Gurley and his potential on moved into healthcare and Lydia thanks for coming on. Leo who who is Bill Gurley for our listeners who are familiar with them. Sure I am a bit early. Legendary not. It it you like it at general partner our benchmarks. And when an epic book about it and capital and are there and it's one that's. An equivalent of our ambassador in blueberry today app that. They appear to deal that. What exactly is he is interest in health care at this point is there anything in particular that he finds intriguing. You know are good it's really app is great and looking into where. Back to influence health care and they're back at that packed complete. And sticking it out to kind of when networks where it. And the way we're heaping election is in that area as. Like healthcare right he felt pretty badly about that take up because Donald. There working he graduates he had a copy book urgent care or bad. Any ego and circles Ike in. Don't mind it like that in that would address the race and Ike they're hoping it will come seeking public back at the cryptic and cutting and have a tactic. So he's so he's not so much looking at companies that are innovating in the you know different drugs are different treatments but more on how people interact with the health care system. Yeah yeah about. Their apartment. I'm just making it got to wait bury our. Doctor appointment are among very figure it out there. What where does he see how does he look to improve valid what what kinds of things are he is is Debra what's he talking about doing actually. Yet though I am like that instant I. At a trend is consumer patience of that industry like for example with Dugard actually exceeded. Can you ground it players are accurate count and take it great experiences and direct and Terry delayed. And pat. An attack Adams who you expect that happened optics you. For a long time out there on identifications. Haven't really been right Eric and helping her with are your current. Unpack and expect. It. In the end and music bed thinking about but he can back it actually expect a plan. People optic I would quit like many critics like yeah. That pitching and perhaps our power. Over the experience. One of the issues that people run into when they try to get into health care in any way shape or form. It is that it's a fairly highly regulated industry is he ready to any hurdles as he's trying to navigate that you know maze of different regulations. Yeah I think it's something that effort and I am. From what I our nation and the harassment of and and eat out in your past it can't be can't expect that he caught our eye doctor. Those are kind of really knew these happen and seventeen. There is an important thing about that yet he's very and other we are meant to but he. Our folks in the industry and people like Ann Arbor actually treat me and alert from the regulatory challenges he's an arm. Attorney in me and incorrect thinking very content that out based on record as pop up. I. There that aren't just. Surrogate Lydia thank you very much of the time and I will catch of this and have a great Christmas New Year's. Yeah Lydia Ramsey for business insider. You know obviously I think a lot of us would like to have it any easier way to. Book in May book a point with a doctor even just kind of manage our health care about how. How convoluted that process can be. In today's world yeah yeah so I think that CDS from one is starting to get into this and do a better job have you been to one of their minute clinics at no progress I went a few weeks ago. But it was still not perfectly to have. I I didn't know I had a sore throat as where that at straps and I went in there and I. You know I looked up the problem was seeking go to CBS dot com and they can tell a yet the next available appointment as at this time. At this address show up and data be no way we'll see you right away yeah. And and to figure out though how much everything was gonna cost it was nobody's rights I had to go take a look at my insurance log into my insurance network figure out if the CBS mini clinic is covered. And then if it is okay how much as strep test going to cost and how much is at pocket deductible. If you have a platform like you know I know we compared into the Hoover of health care but right if you had a platform that. You lost and move your way assured that give I don't like that struggles they've had recently so a good application where you can login with your insurance network that saved. Your information and that you could determine OK these are the network providers that are in network in my general area but the Amazon of health share of these the times that they are available and by the way these the prices that they're going to charge my interest network and therefore how much I'm gonna pay out of pocket. You could see something like that having incredibly. I success Aaliyah it's is it's what everyone wants transparent transparency of pricing ease of use that's that that's big for people is that health care system. It's intimidating is help valiantly trying to trying to figure out what to do would who'd talked to and how much gonna cost. Like half the time we call different people the same insurance company the totally two different things so this is slightly different to be zoos is dental but I needed to route to. And so my dentist refer me over to use him his. Expert I looked him up they were ad network I was and it was net pay for the entire route now I'd Norse or what happened at the caller I'll venture. They sent me a fax with a list of dentists in the area that how generous they are the facts we have a fax machine at the officer gets used you know always everybody months. Is it may have facts of these different dental providers and then I had to call them yeah once I won many a graph over and exactly I mean I had to call them one by one and say hey I have incredible tooth pain right now I need to root canal today who can fit Meehan and you know again there is such an inefficiency there can be easily solve it's excellent plot formal process Sox. I think it not be blunt and I mean that's not exactly what you wanna be doing when you are in just like. Horrible pain from needing a Roloson last thing editors alike you're you're sitting there sweating try to figure out which which dent mr. Geithner to. Let's pivot now to the natural segue here which is the full list of 27 team's worst pass will hit the Holland or your computers this is great this is. It was that is put out every year by splash state. Who is a password management provider and and pretty much what they did is they looked it leaked to password data. That they found on the dark Levinson okay what are the most common passwords. That are used in the worst ones to have. The number one worst pass were to have. Is 123456. Number twos went 224 by 67 number three is what you believe or 5678. Number five is 12345. At number six is 123456789. But a number eight is 1234567. So. Five out of the top ten worst pass where these are just people typing in. Numbers in order are these the same people who mid to Long Island I ST YRS session today still allows you to do that I. I have not been to like every single one is a rookie need capital letter it gets an asterisk and three numbers right it gets worse than number two hours password is password. Ahead when I was like nine years old I like this one I'll let me in with no caps is number seven on the list it's. And then. To some other big ones that are rather common. Football's number ten. Late audio Miguel I'll put football no delivered guess it don't you immediate everyone's gonna gets it right. I love you his number eleven. System was clearly being feeling guilty when they type that like you you don't put that your password and lets you did something now what are you doing on the computer of what you do wrong what you do. That's top Star Wars is number sixty Star Wars number sixty young nerd for some reason monkey is number fourteen. Weird. I I don't know why monkey is on this list like that name or something for. One another and don't know you just gives mine is no other bad ones on the list ABC 123. 123123. The these are very common as well. Dragon. I don't know but that maybe it game thrown references to games throws. You know. This one I I don't understand how it made this top 25 list what is. Q hazy WS acts lecture keyboard party. I know it goes down that way okay that makes sense. And then the number 25 is trust no one with the number one from X-Files. As an engineer computer. Just wanna rattle through a couple quick stories here checks out a Mike Armstrong Tucker Silva. In studio for it to a Berry is up out on a pre Christmas holiday. And citizen depressing news that we got this morning actually. As it relates to America's health and this according to a report from the CDC. Deaths from drug overdoses. Still continuing to surge up 21%. In 2016 to almost 64000. People. Yeah so we did this is really starting to I mean obviously this is impacting ever won I think they're very few people today that don't know some of those impacted by. Drug overdose. It's driving a decline though in our average life expectancy here in the United States it is. Cause a second year in a row decline in average life expectancy which we have not seen that sort of thing since the 1960s. This is truly incredible you know foray. First world. You know wealthy economy. To see declines in life expectancy. Is very very rare and it is it is truly shocking to see this. It did just. It again we haven't seen this in forty years if we do have three years in a rolled declining life expectancy. The last time we saw that was with the Spanish flu back in what 1917. Or something like that I think I mean it's it's incredible. It dated 1918 sorry there's clearly no one good answer for this but it is. The hope you're an epidemic epidemic is just that it is an epidemic in it is terrified. What's interesting is. Americans aside from this are still healthy it's just it's it's becoming such a big part of society now. That. It's something that is having a meaningful impact. Unlike expectancies to test I mean in 2016 death rates grew by seven point 8% for the between fifteen and 24. Ten and a half percent for those 25 to 34 and by six point 7%. From 35 to 44. You know if you're 65 and older death rate traction falling but you know you have these young people who are. You know really at their prime points in their lives being impacted by this of the Euro Hewitt epidemic it is it's horrible horrible. This now has this causes more deaths each year in the US then flu or pneumonia. It causes more deaths each year. In the US then. Then suicide it is something that is only the there's only. Six things that its trailing now in terms of death rates in the US OK it's just behind diabetes yeah it's just behind alzheimer's and it's a ways behind you know heart disease and cancer but. This is. There is no argument that you can make this is an isolated problem or a small issue this is now one of the top ten causes of death in the United States. Yeah kills more people in car accidents I mean like. I've a real tough time assuming get better parents to a real tough times they get any better any time soon I get the feeling we are going to be looking at a worsening scenario before it gets better it's it's across all age groups two and A you just do not have the infrastructure in place to handle this sort of thing and I don't know what the quick and easy answers. It it's not good I can tell you that. Some local news here at the the sale of the Boston Globe's former home on Morsi boulevard. That sale has closed as of yesterday for an undisclosed amount. To a Burlington based developer normal accompany him six and a half acre site either abuse at first light industrial and off space glad that it's been pretty much for thousands of immigrant craft brewery and part of it. I'm excited there and for her I'll sighted. Look at it again when Joseph tell this to me craft breweries and we have people Arnold and selling all of these craft Beers are so expensive. I don't care that would. They're good here about that yeah I do it you know that's always better out is just real quick iris sharpened for. A craft beer line yes they're for Christmas gift. Some bottles one singular bottle of craft beer like 20/20 five bucks it was the stand Blake twelve ounce bottle or not valued at nearly 20/20 four hours early twenty ounce 24 ounce bottle now that's expensive for beer just one bear you know makes a great prison these days or via the crawlers the big affair go to the Eagles one of those notes like man you war set for the next year old yeah yeah. You're you're in good shape then but. This this sale of by the global sites. Now complete and will look to see we can get some final plans coming in the next few months and imagine. They probably have you know lining on this line up at bats already ago. New Jetta China their top ride sharing app that over China effectively DD. Just raised four billion dollars in new funding. And so this gives them about twelve billion in cash reserves in values the company at 56 billion dollars so it does. Which is. This is really tough because image if you haven't studied the examiner called the history of Woburn DD. Hoover had a presence in China and they've basically I mean in not so many terms they're basically forced out by you know anti competitive. Things and going on. And so it would do is over now have a stake in Didi because of that. They have like a small stake today now that I think they now have a stake in news in DDB their basic force that China and now I mean you've had because of all these. Terrible management decisions and issues at Newburgh you have a company that. Very well may be a smaller company and indeed there's a valuation going on soft and gotten off to purchase about two shares and if they succeed in that it's gonna value Lowber at fifty billion dollars meaning less indeed. I wonder if. Who were ever gets back kind of that that crown jewel of of the tech world image that they had. It is that they could do no wrong prima from 2011 until 2016. Yeah I mean and then the wheels fell off. Yeah I mean your member I just did on the first have a show referring to different technologies as the cougar of this industry Hoover of that industry and they are just. It is becoming synonymous with many Google something Brennaman them and Colin Hoover I'm even when you're getting a taxi would Sam Adam who during there. They've lost that place. It it became verbally Google yet you know don't since they insist GM and being something. You know but he did say I'm gonna Google and even if you go to being using AM go willingly know no one thinks of it as a company anymore it is Aybar yet. Hoover was getting there and they've they've clearly lost their place and that. Yeah I would be I would be pretty upset of DD news you know was able to expand into a whole bunch of new countries and really outpace Spielberg Ford bit. That very well could be the reality that there there were facing here. Quick chat on tax reform OK I know that we've Bob and talking about an awful lot will continue to is we get more information coming out and we continue to go through the bill. If people are familiar with a lot of the big items that are included in there at this point we've talked about that the doubling of the standard deduction in the removal of the personal exemption. I think some of the things. That need to be discussed. Are some of the the things around the edges that people still have questions about. At this point one thing that is completely new. There's now only tax credit for non child dependence like elderly parents yeah. Yeah I filed an ally hasn't heard about that's that it gathers in new credit being coming out and then the existing credit for it for children is double so that's gone from 1002000. Big thing to remind everyone on this does not affect the taxes that your filing Ian. April race this is for tax year two when he eighteen meaning these changes are going to affect year you know your paychecks. And your filing for April 2019. Not for 2018. So. Other things that ended up making their way into this bill. There's a whole section a whole group of people that were concerned that teachers will be able to deduct classroom supplies anymore they're still able to do that. Bear is going to be happy that the electric a electric car tax credit is still in there so he is go by his next golf cart to get assembly 500 dollar tax certain. That's obviously. You know nice perk and what else we have in terms of but any anything new stand out in terms of big things that were continuing galore and you know. 539 plant expansion I think is pretty interest things so unit traditionally factoring and plans only to be used on. Yeah accredited colleges and universities. I can now be expanded to cover the cost of public private or religious elementary and secondary schools. That's an interest in one for me because when I look at it that the primary benefit of the 529 as you put the money and in a gross tax free rent until user will the only putting in for like two or three years how much tax free growth you really get the that the benefit there is that it gross tax free and compounds. For like eighteen years and then finally you're able use it so yeah I like that there's more flexibility. But I do worry that. You know you're not really getting the Max benefit if that's the the route that you go he had I would be concerned about people making just poor decisions there and saying oh well I can use it for a private schools so even though I didn't make any money for men as Dario pulled this out now and use him him getting bad advice on pace as I'm concerned about gaps so there are a whole bunch of changes will continue to dig through them as we go towards the end of the year and when this starts kicking in. Right now we are gonna take a quick break when we come back. Matthew divorced from business insider is gonna take us inside the tests auto pilot system and inside Cadillac super cruise. A not the year of traffic but I AB dislike of traffic. Is under a stick. Check have you talked to anybody who's that you know what actually like traffic don't mind it it's a rather than those DirecTV commercial that's what. I love it when our staff it turns some traffic at that yes. Just on yes there wouldn't as I was and I think that it. I drive stick. Which means that you know work in the clutch the entire time them and stopping go traffic so it's it's you know a little bit more challenging for someone like myself. Compared to what the two of you don't know what it's like to actually draw in the top 1% or grab an automatic car for seven hours. Yeah and you decide that you just wanted to kind of give up. Connecticut baptists and traffic and I'm OK with that in any case commutes are getting longer right now the average commute between sixteen. Was 26 point one minutes which is up a minute from 2010. And in particular in some communities that have been growing quickly you need to be increasing more rapidly in San Francisco. Commuters spent three point warming it's a longer getting to work than they did just seven years ago. In San Jose it's an extra two point nine minutes so you continue to see these commuting times inching up in Natalia. Around the Boston area it's late I feel historical it's torture. Is there a good time to drive don't want when he ate at this point no. Revenue in the city on Saturday at like 1 o'clock had done it doesn't match Sunday afternoon at. 6 PM it's fair it no longer matters worst offender is that stretch of her 93 just south of the city. Cricket dot com for more information everybody it's very Armstrong and I'm joined by estate planning attorney Todd what's key from law firm Cushing in Dolan. We're talking about. Gifting assets can you explain Todd the differences. Between gifting assets away from an IRS perspective. Vs gifting assets away from Medicaid. Perspective this is a great question because two things one the amount you can give away for an IRS purposes is 141000. Today and com 2018 the news is it's gone up to 151000. Seems to go up about every three or four years got to make up by a thousand north eagle eyes so. There will be 151000. You can give away. In what that means from an IRS perspective is that you. Do not need to file a gift tax return and you do not need to pay any gift taxes and you will not use up any of your gift tax exclusion. It is an out right freebie. 151000. Dollars to. Anybody you want to give it to do I need to clear as the recipient that's a question out and yesterday you know mom gives their son. 101000 dollars and then that subtle call means settlement on gave me 101000 dollars to acted declared that anywhere you know absolutely nothing for the recipient and most importantly nothing for the gipper. However the difference is for Medicaid purposes. It will be gate is qualifying transfer. It doesn't matter that it's not taxable for the IRS if you think you can give away 151000 dollars and protect it from the nursing home without creating a five year waiting period. You are incorrect. Folks it's important to learn how to properly yet you're assets you don't run afoul of the Internal Revenue Service or Medicaid. Call Cushing and all and ID 668485699. Like us on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter pax TFE show you. The breaking business news is always first right here on the financial exchange radio network. Might be considered bunching. We case that race. I have considered bunching I don't need to exit guides and deductions but died no I have not can be bunching mr. Tucker do you bunch on bunch on occasion. Bunting for those you who aren't familiar with the term from time to time. It's it's not what it sounds like what this is with these standard deduction going up to 121000 for individuals and 24000 for married couples. Lot of folks are concerned that hey they're not gonna meet that threshold in order to be able to itemize and so what they're talking about doing is instead of giving. 500 dollars to the same charity every year is saying OK let's blown this up and that term bunching. And go any better term finesse. What would you call I don't know. Well here let's go down the list would you rather caught clumping. And at the groupings have a grouping. Now dropping doesn't sound just that's just putting in the like you won a bunch them it's. So what bunting is instead of making a 250 dollar donation every year for ten years you say okay. I'm gonna donate 2000 dollars this year and then not do it again for the next eight. Here's the reason you might do that folks is. Going forward if you don't have enough. Deductions itemize so used to be you know if you had to he's get 30% of people were itemized deductions meaning you may be charitable contribution. You'd itemize that in your tax return and you know you would see it come off of your income. Because this induction is doubling a lot less people are going to be able to do that so what you're talking about his okay. Rather than by chuck said doing tuned for two dollars a year I'm going to donate 2500 dollars in one year. And then not make those donations for a few years could make things interest in for the austerity. That's that's what I wonder about if you're charity that has been a fixed operating expenses every year you sit there and you say. Okay how how do we do this like do we just DO do we invest this money or do we assume they're going to maybe up there it gives. You don't know someone's gonna increased their donation one year in the not to attributed all or maybe it's the start of a new trend. It makes it more difficult to your charity I think to project what you got closer gonna be each year here's where I think a big windfall could be is there's all these. Big gap funds that are called donor advised funds fidelity runs a big one vanguard has one. And what happens is you basically. Make an irrevocable gift to this charitable fund and you get immediate tax credit right away yup. But you don't have to distribute the gift to the charity right away yet to get some small amount ever out every year but you can do about the rest of it over a period of years but you get the immediate tax deduction it's I don't see that being so yes. I could see that being especially among wealthier folks and see that being something that. A lot of them would likely use but I I just I wonder if your charity you sit there and say no case this person doubled their contribution this year. Does that mean like they're doing well in the gonna do that every year or two I get nothing next year it's it just becomes a little bit more challenging to plan I want if there's anything else that you can a factor into this Agassi did if you're trying to do some medical procedures you can but you can bunch all of those in one year. Probably yeah. Bunching it's it's the new trend. It's and coming and coming soon to a tax return near you. Speaking of other issues on tax reform there are us some analysts that are saying we may see some additional drilling. As a result of the change in tax code. Yes sorry at. When the bill passed the fact that it allows you to take all of your capital expenditures. And really just take them right up front all the expect you staff do spend take the tax is often what how are just used to like expand those out. It depends if you just handed. On the estimated life of the equipment that some would be five soon be seven to be ten it would depend on specific piece of equipment I can take it all right up front and dad thought as I could promote a whole lot of new drilling and exploration of the next few years. Big question theirs but that does the price of oil. Yeah I mean potentially it could be a boon for consumers if he keeps that price you know with the cap somewhere in the mid fifty range because you know previously prior to a 2015. We've gotten used to 758090. Dollar oil and so the fact that you know we're still sit here today heading into 2018. Game we still and hit that sixty dollar mark. You know it probably feels in pretty good for a lot of consumers say gee guess is back above three dollars a gallon yeah yeah I definitely good for consumers and you know. Twenty years ago this wouldn't even made a blip on the radar of the price of oil. But today you know US is one of the bigger producers out there and you can see it's you could see actually moved the needle here. Interestingly enough there's also takes this into our next story where. Saudi Arabia. Is actually trying to buy up oil assets inside the US isn't that incredible with a few this that's something that I never would have thought I am here now today incredible I mean it the largest oil producer in history. I'll look and diversify their assets that kind of makes sense in created they're looking at during that big IPO. In there looking more to get involved it sounds like in a natural gas yet as opposed to oil they're trying to diversify away from oil and have some additional fuel that they can produce. Yeah and I guess this kind of makes sense knows it I didn't really expect Saudi Arabia it's trying to diversify into you know agriculture. Or in Q. Yahoo! edited developing new technology yeah you're staying the energy sectors up and you know. It is fascinating now than never sub thought I'd see senators thing going on exploring in the US is. It's just something that if if someone it showed you this headline twenty years ago. You said knock knock knock it happened but here we are today in Saudi Arabia is poking around. At US on an US energy assets. A quick word on behalf of leader bank got it is another week in the books just about and it's another great reason to poll leader bank. Since then haven't really seen them come up with any big reported stories and I mean magazine the such membership is way way down there over the past few years they've. Certainly come out some questionable. I just journalistic integrity sort of items like the Virginia thing like you just mentioned like. There they've been in question it's time westerners I don't know I mean the owner Penske media they don't have a lot of different of these types of birdies and. Think overall the response and now some blanket they were the ones that had the marathon bomber on the copper yet. Yes the wrong her I mean I know the right person out they really did like glamour story. They made him look like her for via they made him look like some kind of hero. Awful awful so idea I. I mean look I'm sure that they still get a lot of traffic there's circulation is still one and a half million but. It seems that an expensive valuation methods million dollars for the for the majority stake yep it's I just. I wonder why how anyone values immediately and now it's it's so hard to do that when things can change so quickly specially magazine. What a magazine what a magazine never heard. A fax machine but it you look at it and you can see just look at the last like five years since its partnership concede you know if it's climbing fastest declining that's that's the real question is how fast paced declines. I guess alleged look at it in a world where not even ESPN can you know say they were able hole on the Wal-Mart customers yeah you think ruled stones going to. And I just I I just have a hard time seeing that. At this point. Tucker Silva brought the story to our attention for the first time. A few days ago now maybe a week at a talking about this for a year ago and tuchman talked about this for year. And technical from the Wall Street Journal is now joining us choose should a little bit of light on this story about apple limiting performance. In older iphones trip thanks for coming on. Turk what is apple doing just Tucker ever a reason to be concerned. Tegra certainly honest about it like. Essentially what happened to you look back a little over a year ago. Apple ran into some issues particularly in China where I. Six it took us about as worst one in which shutting down. It is called brownie now and what would happen as your battery might be it thirty percent. You log onto web site that might be a little bit. I denser than the analysts and that was how oral. And what takes place and it. There's a big cool on the process there the download our web site would pull on the battery. And the battery. Chinese T shirt to pull too strong. The device sent saw the protected the ball and protect the compact. I'm missed this created a paper for apple China because Chinese consumer groups complained about it. And that is one market apple doesn't wanna have complaints within China. So is developed the feature and it's operating software system Iowa. Him when he two point one. That lid kind of moderate the warm up yours that you wouldn't have this rounding out George actually what it it was. It's loaded the computing power of the a bid to buy. And that's what partner at least in the the ads. So it's it's slowing the device but apple isn't try it they they even built these things to ruin the batteries have day. They've actually built these things to protect the department of the batteries and and the device that and it can. We depend on how you look at it right I mean. The intention is sure clear I think they wanna protect the divide it they wanna protect the consumer from. I think have a negative experience with the device the device. Suddenly and abruptly power. Looking at what this does to performance how how steep of a degradation. Is there and performance from the specs. They. That's probably out it OK expertise but it but it but it is. Severe enough to where he won noticing that there. Might be performing a lot and optimal and and that and spent a lot of people including you mark my current slow. I need to get an important when inside the issue that the bone. Well of course. Issue and that the battery state and it's. If they would suck you out the battery and then beauty you know and can get a new battery which has currently. No charges on no longer alive but don't you know it and subjected to this the brown out situation. The bone would return to the operating. Does this same issue exist if you buy a Samsung phone or an LG phone or something like that. I am not sure whether or not Samsung has done something immoral war. Or not obviously it stands I did that it would help the league are armed to implement something on it and operating. Income I haven't seen any reports and write down on.
