This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. The last decade we've seen the rise of Amazon.com. As the heat global Internet retailer. Today Wal-Mart takes what could be a pretty big step in trying to fight back born abroad chuck son Michael Armstrong and talkers over here today. And Michael start of the show talking about this this partnership. That Wal-Mart and in Google seemed to be putting together. To try to challenge Amazon what exactly are they do. Yeah I think is a big you know big search for Google is a much bigger story from Wal-Mart so Ballmer is partnering with Google to really compete with the voice enabled products that are growing in people's homes they think about the ams on Alexa and the Google home. Very easy to see where the elect's partners with Amazon shopping to really generate revenue for ams on Google did not have that direct link. That's seamless transaction. Point until now which they've just announced we're going to start partner with Wal-Mart. He revealed its new directly order items from your Google home. And the zip. People might underestimate this this this could be a very big deal for both companies. It couldn't and I guess but my one hesitation. Is. With regards to the actual process of voice activated shopping rather than the specific platform okay yeah. And specifically both he will win when you're trying to buy something now OK and let's go through a few different example let's say that you run at a laundry church okay. You run at a laundry detergent. Where do you go right now in order to get new laundry entered what do you do. Because I'm living in you know ten years ago in my choice of Vista target and accept six Portland after a team we might order that on ams. We might be ordered but we're going on our phone number over name because we don't have one of these boys voice active effort Tucker for something like laundry detergent I'm still going to Stop & Shop or target. I am. And when you go to your phone Mike what's the process that use right now. Open as you know security unlock my phone open the Amazon shopping app find the item on looking for. Once you have it there at one touched order and it delivered. So if you were to be able to say look just go by tighter whatever it is. Obviously that sounds nice but how does the Alexa know exactly. Which tied to get because this. There's a million different sizes there's a million specific types there's different sense there's different colors there's a whole bunch of different ones is with which there's without bleach here's how it knows it looks I order history and says you order this one every six months for the last three years. I know that you're going to order this one again to eleven or if report. Then Spaniard have to its prior gonna ask you a few questions after that okay. You watch this what size. So here's what brand so here's my thought with regards to. What I think would at least when I think about the functionality for my perspective via better one stead of saying. Hate Alexa go by this. Let me take a picture with my phone of the item. And then it goes in buys that exact moment it recognizes the image and buys exactly what I'm showing at least for things gummery order okay sure. I just think that that is a better user experience because I can just go say I'm on there I'm out at that I'm sitting there at the laundry machine right now I have the thing in my hand over because it's empty. In all I do was snap a picture I teams that picture the Barco. I think that could be the same seamless transaction but. If you got to write in your hands and you see the size Chinese you can just say. Amazon order me or Alexa order mes they 64 ounce containers tide sports. Detergent. You're giving it the exact orders it knows what to do and it if we're talking about expanding. The big thing here remember we're talking about expanding into grocery shopping here. And with those repetitive items yeah I I'm a fighter I am I was scared on the gross recite that again not on fresh Prodi's I agree that has a long ways to go but I think those repetitive items that we all order. I think this could make things very very seamless and where. Wal-Mart. Could have. A big advantage here or at least place and catch up here. Is they are going to be getting into this area that they do their app does not have nearly as much penetration as the Amazon does obviously jet dot com no doubt have that same experience Amazon does the but if you're taking that experience out of the online shopping. If you're taking the Amazon app out and all of a sudden it's all just voice activated. Well what's really the difference between shopping on Amazon and Wal-Mart dot com it's going to be pretty similar experience do you think it is a problem or. Much ado about nothing that Wal-Mart had to go to Google in order to build us. I think is a Smart move that Wal-Mart. Because than what you see companies doing far too often. Is trying to build their own system that people need to adapt I think that would have been a big failure for Wal-Mart saying okay we're gonna put our own voice activated product into people's homes. That's not gonna get high adaptation where's if you go you partner with Google. And you're just directing traffic to your site from that platform it's just it's a Smart move for both for both cup I mean it's the same methodology as they took with jet dot com Alec OK and we don't want to create our own things Solis is by jet dot com and out apparent output global. It's more expensive to do that though is it more expensive it is definitely more expensive but if you do it right and the risk of screwing up doing it the other way I think is too is that much higher risk then. Paying extra money to outsource and their and to be fair that they've kind of proven that they can't do it on the Adams lake it turned they have be in the relatively inept to trying to build an e-commerce presence on the Euro but I think the single biggest advantage that this brings to Wal-Mart and Google. Is that you were taking that Amazon. User interface that you people have become very very used to. And taking it out of the equation by doing it all voice activated so if if and I don't know we have seen the product yet. But if the user experience between ordering from Wal-Mart dot com on that to home is the seem as the user experience by ordering Amazon.com through the ams and oxen. The net could be a very big gain. For wall but they changing anything as far as they're delivery policy or anything it they. I didn't see any change today it looked like similar to Amazon orders would be free shipping assuming you net at certain minimum obviously Wal-Mart does not have a subscription service like Amazon does where you're required to pay an annual fee wal mart's just if you ordered X number of dollars of goods that we shipped into your house for Fareed. I don't know how that differs from Amazon's. Amazon's existing services. It's going to be adjusting to watch to see if this is something that helps them. Pick up a little bit more market share in e-commerce we know what they e-commerce business is growing quickly. But part of that is is effectively it's it's a tiny piece of the puzzle this agree yeah I think what we can all probably assume is that these voice activated. Items are going to become more and more common so having a big presence and their from the start can only be good thing these Kemp and this brings us to our. Poll question of the day head over to financial exchange showed dot com right now. And if you look on the first page or poll question of the day you have an Amazon echo Google home. We're neither. Okay. Let us know go over to financial exchange show dot com and once again do you have an Amazon echo a Google home or neither I don't I don't have anything right now are spread you don't have one. I've I've thought about getting one I still have. Privacy concerns with regards to having one of these things can is that it it's always on. You know it's not you know static ridiculous and Alexa and or nacco excuse me. And I was talking it's my life and that they misheard me in it let up at audits at all if it thought that I sent Alexa to misheard me and actually say it I don't know on issues because oversee what would you say Tucker I. Sect you know what you could probably ask your Alexa what he says it was I was listening but the thing lit up in the old. It's listening forgot about that I I just I'm not sure if I want it listening all the time. It does. I eyes exotic I hear your concern I I don't know if I'm comfortable with that because. Again who knows where that ends up somehow we know there have been high profile hacking previously. Of just about every company out okay. Even Amazon itself present problems with hacking in the past. I just don't know if I want every conversation that I have in my house being recorded. Is it being recorded goers are just listening for the keyword Alexa. It's our letter as it is it's just an all times and what does a recording. That's. Well I I do to every case is a thinks of you let's say even if it's not him some can hacked in and start recording. You like the these are problem with the things that we have to realize because. Again that the technologies fascinated with what could be able to do and and I love the idea of some of the things where you just say. Alexis spent time it turns up all the lights near house interns AC this temperature. I love the concept of that yeah. I don't love the fact it's going to be over hearing me while chopping up tomatoes and I might now yeah using the right word like give a lot of hacker wanna access you'd. Chopping up tomatoes and listening to you know The Rolling Stones or something like colleagues and our senate if there's something more substantial going on there and they choose to black married for big point. You did say something that was illegal at the time in your home away and that's where the what if I'm sitting there and message I can't believe I have to do shows Mike Armstrong again this lake lake imagine if all of a sudden things like that start getting brought out into the public like if just you can say you're joking. There's there's legitimate users are two cases that I can think of that I've seen. Stories of talking on let's let's say a bad day you and you say I'm gonna go to work tomorrow killer for. All night with a clear that what what what I would never says. I know he started I. Present ever does that have a bad days and if this happens again I'm gonna like everyone is sitting out in I just learn it I just worry. About war. Is another example if you're on the fall what's you know. You know insurance or something in your talking to them in your given you credit card number or something like batters Social Security number eggs like there's been here on the following hearings like that. There's all kinds of stuff let alone to get into the conversations. About you know well let's say that you know you sit there and say gee agents can't really looks like the mailman like. Those things you just can't have on a recorded in chair I don't want that now OK so I just get. Nervous and and look I'm probably a little overly nervous about this I do I get it. Well I mean I'd I know there's a case out there where elects. Voice records were subpoenaed and no subpoenaed for information on act think like murders that took place and home. And I believe they were able to produce those voice recordings what was going on. Yet that they did it was a couple months ago I think we coveted so. In any case let's take a break when we come back. Lauren Mack or from the Wall Street Journal is going to be joining us talking about H two B visas and whether or not business is near the coast have been able to find enough seasonal workers. The title of the article is due businesses need foreign workers Martha's Vineyard is finding out. The author of the article is worn backward from the Wall Street Journal and Laura is joining us right now Warren out war and I'm sorry or thank you coming on. Work can you talk about Al what is studied in this piece and and and what you found. Cherry Hill you know one of the big debate is happening in our country right now is to what extent. Who immigration is a positive to what extent Ford workers helped the US economy vs current threat to America markers. And that that debate thing going on for awhile and people have a certain views that this summer we had turned a real world experiment because there's a program called H two B program which. It allows people to come in for temporary seasonal work mostly unskilled workers come in Turkey. Seasonal war can assist in the summer confident resort to going to Alaskan fisheries landscaper. And there was of a big shortage of those that number at fewer available to here than there were last year for our complicated set of reasons. And a lot of places that I've had these visas didn't get them so what we try to do it this article was just look at one place. That is reliant on the program in this case but I'm hardy from EMI on Martha's Vineyard and yeah you know what what the policy impact. How many of these H two BV says does Martha's Vineyard typically bring in any given year. You know I would there isn't an actual total but it's you know it's if there are many there are many many that the business doesn't align them but not not huge numbers like you would see and it plays like a fishery where they have 900 workers that one company print this. But we're talking about like you know it doesn't hear it doesn't act you know scattered throughout the island so it's it's found. It's it makes a big impact when you're talking about small business because a lot of these small businesses. Still happy to back so when you happier happier staff. Reliant on one particular lead to target me don't get any of these does that make it different. So what are these businesses do to try to deal with the problem that they bring on other employees were able to find a religious run short staffed for the summer. You know until it really interesting because there was a combination of responses. You know there was an impact and in terms of their ability to serve their customers in some cases they cut back hours they cut back menu items. Ilya a lot of managers scrambling managers too lenient making a bad for when didn't have a housekeeper. That's sort of things that are without me go to that restaurant that openly count because they didn't have the workers. Don't sound still relied on foreign markets but found them through other ways. So for instance is apparently a K one of these apparently to serve Ford and student to come over for the summer so still a little prodigy one markers you can work multiple jobs. Let off so we're employers too. What one of the things that we've touched on on our show before is the decline in the labor force participation rate among teens it seems like. I know that if you go back to the seventies and eighties that's 60% of teens were employed during the summer and summer jobs today it's only around 35%. Seems like businesses aren't able to tap that market to replace these missing H two B visa workers. Right so I think that the combination of reasons. On one hand you know how when you're talking about island's economy you don't have the same number of teenagers say he would have. You know to drop from. But alpha had one business owner telling me he doesn't like hiring American teenagers could he didn't think that they worked hard. And you know there is something here about like up preference had been -- lot of these is the seem to prefer to foreign workers today there are extra. Extremely reliable just want to work work work work work there there there there there may be making money for their support their families for the whole year based on just one summer. He's been so. You know is that. Their situation for American workers you know obviously people can disagree but. It. Varies does seem to be a little bit about bias my against the American workers by somebody as a defense. There any difference in wages that are paid to these H two B visa workers vs American workers at the same employer. Now. They are required by a lot of paid prevailing wage which is that median wage being paid. In that area for that type of pork should generally speaking people get their wages back. They are these that are are paid to people. Doing their type of work Americans doing their type of pork folks. I don't think that it has I think our protections for that particular question cover one thing I did he was that there were a ton of HQB workers and and could actually against the programs are rolled to a working from multiple employers so they've been working forty hours speaks at a hotel and then at night to be working at a fight shopped. Which are not supposed to Q and and that's an arrangement that really benefits employers because they essentially get. Other hours still without having to pay any of these people overtime. Even though the workers themselves are working maybe you know 7080 hour week. Interesting I wasn't aware of that and also. Very good thank you very much for joining us solar we appreciate art are you heading to our Nantucket next summer to do report there. I think they have it right into the bill Medicare. It it it seems like the right thing to do will put in a good word for it all right. All right. Thank you war that is Laura McClure from the Wall Street Journal talking about the use of H two B visas on Martha's of any we'll get that posted on our off FaceBook page. Later today deceit and take a look on at a as well. And let's do a little bit of trivia right now and trivia is brought to you today by the Armstrong advisory group. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today but I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Mike Armstrong here with Wall Street watching my pal markets moving overall this morning so far. Generally speaking this morning we were starting a little bit down we've continued that way the Dow is down 68 points or about 13 of 1% the S&P similar down 13 of 1% seven points NASDAQ about the same when we see from all those this morning you know they reported before the opening bell it wasn't a substantial miss but it wasn't this airport earnings and a dollar 57 a share forecast a profit was a dollar 61. There revenue came in again slightly below estimates nineteen half billion verses 1953. The same store sales though actually did pretty well they climbed four and a half percent. Which is slightly better than the four point 3% expected growth. Similar story here though we saw with Home Depot home deep election had a pretty good quarter and the stock really got slammed it wasn't quite. In expect you know in line with expectations as we've seen with a lot of retailers Lowe's stock this morning down three dollars. Eighty cents at this point stand up and down 5%. On that news. Pretty into it it's a rough quarter for a type of business that is really hot right now home improvement is really really strong people are spending record amounts of money on their house. And market expectations these companies are buried there. Well it is important note that this is a company that's up in the last five years a 169%. Wears the S&P is only up 75%. Over that time for a so. As you said it's been a hot stock in a hot sector for the last five years. But go through a little bit of an adjustment now as they tried to what changed things up on the management side. Yeah that's what I you know I have read into the the earnings call mentioned specifically they did make some organizational structure changes. That to me sounded like it. They also mentions prob with staffing I think a lot of companies these days are really having a tough time finding seems like a good staff and that could be part of the issue here that clearly had strong traffic coming in and out of the stores. But if you're having a tough times that I mean go walk around Home Depot and lows at Yale. 5:30 PM on a weekday or any Saturday and Sunday and tell me how long it takes you to find somebody one of those stores to help you a knowledgeable person wanted to sort it out you. Absolutely tough absolutely it's like with Wall Street Watson let's go back to trivia now. Our trivia question just prior to the break. In what year was lows found the answer was 1946. It was founded in 1946 in north Wilkes Borough North Carolina. Whether an answer Mike. First right answer is I'll leave him from Braintree taken on mobile gift card and trivia is brought to you today by the Armstrong advisory group. With plenty of speculation still in the news regarding a market correction has agreed time for reviewed your portfolio caller office today at 803934001. And setup your free no obligation consultation. That's 803934001. News coming at a Chevron their CEO John Watson is going to be stepping down. They are looking to bring someone new want to fill that role that transition is expected to be announced in the next month but they haven't picked successor as. They have not there's a couple front runners I think. Unity John Watson is not quite to the point where he's some Sharon has required retirement age of 65 he hasn't quite reached that this actual. Resignation looked. A little bit more amicable and a lot of the ones that we've seen over the last few years what I think it's important to call out here what Chevron is probably realizing. Is that they really need to focus their business on the it's squeezing every penny out of the company in a very low oil price market like we haven't seen. Really in the tenure of John Watson's time at that chipper. Good other news coming out late last night Donald Trump as we know gave a speech out in Arizona. And during that speech he said and this is a quote. If we have to close down our government we are building that wall. Market out big like this. Mark I was content I don't like you're going to see a government shut down all seen. I don't believe so either I don't believe so arrive there congress and senate has come out very strong us and we will get this done and we will. You know make sure that we do not closed and the government but it is the president speaking in that impacts things the dollar loss will be of value against gold and the Japanese yen as people are you fleeing to safety again which. You know traditionally clean safety means buying dollars. Well and it and interestingly enough. Saying if ripped coast and the government we will. You're pretty much saying again your party is in power. So you progressing and take my ball and go home and Marty home. So what what what you're really gonna do so again I don't think that you actually end up seeing a government shut down just because I think it will be bad business. For Republicans to do so it doesn't makes it doesn't it censorship on the government when you control all all pieces yeah I mean it is one thing to shut down the government when you don't you know when you controls sit house and senate but not the executive protect it is eight. Very different thing tickets shut down the government when you control with a majority all three branches ago and two branches ago part of it I continue to look at this and say look is still we still get a bunch don't we still have to get a that the debt ceiling raised that there's enough out there that needs to get done like. With that stopped talking about it start doing a problem with that I have with this is your really. Really throwing a wrench and distracting from tax reform. Get to tax reform. And know that they hit the wall is important to trumpet and known NAFTA negotiations are very important. But you are distracting from the key issue that is impacting our economy which is tax reform it in this is one of the he. Things I think that Meeks. Running the government in a democracy. Different from running a business is when you're running a business you could say Cameron have a task force that does exit task force does wind task force that does seem to say go do you do come back to me and and just get it done. When you're running. A democracy and a republic when you're running a representative government. You're always so much political capital you can't do everything it wants right you'd never get everything done that you want to. And so you have to be very targeted in very laser focused. Because you can all go back to the well so many times you can't just keep saying will we do this do that to. You have to be very focused on what you're trying to do and on top priorities. And just it feels like we're not focused on tax reform as. It doesn't and you know we talked about the odds there's there's gambling web sites out there that let you bet on whether certain legislative issues are gonna get done. And the betting likelihood on tax reform getting done this year is down to 33%. People are very native on the idea is actually getting it done and I have legitimately concerns. About. What that does the economy what that does the stock market doesn't get done. Jeff and this is taking note this is over predicted dot org it's a website that you can go to that allows people effectively. To bet on whether or not they think certain things are gonna happen in individual tax cut by the end when he 1733%. Chance right now. Corporate tax cut. Little bit higher at the moment 34% but still again it's it's a one in three chance right now is what people are giving. Both of these different pieces to get through. Let's let's talk a little bit about leader bank before we do anything else and the bears been talking to you about them. For a number of years at this point he's been doing business with them for a while they always have a ton of great deals out there. And this week isn't any different they've got a great new CD that is available and if you head over to leader bank dot com right now or. You can call 8776917900. They have a new CD that is for five years at 2.4 percent belittle Wallace we've seen CD rates up near two and a half. Leader bank is doing it right now it is a five year CD at 2.4 percent a minimum balance of a thousand dollars is required opened the account. But call leader bank for more details right now. At 8776917900. Once again the minimum balance of a thousand dollars is required here. And it's offers for mass residents only. There's a penalty for early withdrawal the rate is subject to change without notice member FDIC. In this raid is effective as of August 15. 2017. Continuing talk a little bit about the they effects of president Trump's speech in Arizona yesterday. Couple safe haven flights pick up a little bit of activity yesterday. As gold in the yen jumped a little bit after. Donald Trump's speech. Yeah. Briefly touched on this but they it is a little bit frightening when you you have these speeches and investors flocked to these different methods were not talking substantially. But. After the you know after that speech the dollar fetched a 10931. Yen which was down. Pretty substantial from where was the day before and the spot prices on gold changed as well. It's it's substantial when you are when you're having speeches like that when your making bold statements about. What the US government is going to do and threatening shut down you got to know it's gonna have impacts downstream absolutely. So mr. Mineta Verizon on their unlimited data plans. They're gonna be revamping those plans and changing some pricing a little bit and also Verizon coming out and saying that for certain plans and certain users they may start throttling video quality and providing only lower quality video. Yeah I was reading this has pretty surprised at first because you think of horizon as the premier provider you know having the best call quality the best you know best data quality. And here they are saying we're gonna basically start. Cutting down on the quality of people's video calls. What they're doing is they're coming out with two different unlimited plans which you know they just came out with the government Lander recently. There's an OK if you want the best Heidi you know high definition quality video you must sign up for the vehement planet X ten bucks a month more expensive. What they did say is that the difference between high Def and on high Def when you're doing a video calling your phone. Is pretty tough to tell. It's a small screen you please you can tell Donald out of canyons for five and screen. I don't know I don't do a whole lot of video calls and those that I do are generally over Wi-Fi. So I don't know that this would really be impacted anyway Tucker do you facetime at all. Rarely but who cares if it's high definition of foam lake seriously. I would pay an extra ten bucks a month was at the mound and asked them to think about how much silly even if lets it even if I'm streaming oblivious on them. Yeah and I think that's Verizon's point is it cost them a whole lot of money to be able to you know often the band with a stream HD video and no one's really known cares anyway so let's just. Let's charge more for and hope that customers codes in the direction of curious to see how many people actually. Go for it be more expensive plan is like I had a lot of people do and I here's John I think people are generally just kinda dumb about yet seen him that same thing happened with when they came out with tiered pricing plans on how much DD news at what went for a limited they had no idea what a gigabyte of data ones. And nobody has an idea I got myself down to the cheapest plan now I'm pretty close on your own undoing one gigabyte a month when I'm down to. You can't ever talk to me but I'm down to the tee and it. So if it awards under I checked never answers as well it works out really well I don't have to talk to anyone that I don't wanna talk to and I pay us if that's what I called win win. Also along these lines the NFL and ten cents are trying to get the NFL on choose Smartphone screens in China at first I'd like this and said. Why are you know way is this really going to do anything for either group but to me for the NFL. It's more of a wind on day they're getting some presumably some small amount of revenue. From ten cent to offer streaming services of their game and it gains in China and its its ability right nobody's watching NFL in China right now anyway if you're gonna generate some small amount of revenue to needy. Hook a user base down there over there than. I guess wind on. Phil's been a little bit slow to get into China the NBA has done a phenomenal job market internationally in town and basketball is just massive in China right now. The Vienna film really has not dull and a whole lot. To push the game in that direction obviously they do the game in London every year they've been doing game in Mexico City for the last couple years now. But they have yet to really make a big push in to China and I think it's a good move for them in the long run to try to get into that market is because it's such a big market and in just the merchandising opportunities are huge for them. That's the good initial step mocha it is I think the big issue or one of the issues that you have a that is football's played on a very specific schedule big. Big games or Sunday which is what. Monday mornings and in China if you can't be basic can't watch alive game if you're trying to follow up with football has a badly want a job. Metro area it's what's working priorities here if you fury in China and you want to watch football. You need a job that doesn't work Monday morning share so the U gotta put your priority priorities in order. If a spouse enters in nursing home Howard joint bank accounts and joint brokerage account like investment accounts mutual funds share. Are they at risk and and and how does it vary for single individual. So if you're married doesn't matter whether it's a joint bank account our joint investment account. Everything. Is considered accountable for Medicaid eligibility and you know what else there that's not mentioned here how about IRA accounts. IRA retirement accounts also at risk for the cost of long term care so it doesn't matter whether to joint brokerage or joint bank account. You gotta put all the money on the table. And start from there. Different however when your single engine right so when you're single they have a different rule. Joint bank accounts with a child you throw to hit on as a joint owner right they do all the time. If you do that then the joint bank account is deemed 100%. At risk and unless you can prove that that other person put money and we know they do it again you know look who Social Security numbers and look who's. Pensions going in there and look who Social Security's going in there. That's for bank accounts but for investment accounts fidelity account of the world right it's deemed. 50% or pro rated based on the number of owners on the account so if there's. On spouse if there's one child on the air and 50% of that would be deemed. Not at risk so interesting distinction between the two. But advance planning always the best. All think you I was Quaid is just Compass Minerals that's okay yet a camel to have a virtually that lets backup system that the sounds good so. As a general overview Compass Minerals the ticker is. He MP itself bowl that's primarily use for highway connecting in the midwest as well specialty fertilizers. Publicist Scott has fallen about 20% of the copy record eight. 82 can pick it you report results in February and shares now trade at a seven year low. But because the companies felt the wasting all their sales are linked to how much its nose in their mid west territory. So the big question here is that after two consecutive mild winters. Has climate change permanently changed all winters and they're forceful demands for compass. It's pretty appealing way to bet on bet on whether I've never heard that one a can't go on. Yet it's a so we looked at 420 years of weather data in the midwest and we found that eight you know quote unquote normal winter. Is that what's different now from twenty years ago. So what we do think it's likely to nose slightly less in the future Q2 warmer weather. We still think it's like please no more over the next decade and be mild winters of the past two years. And so there Rita we like cult that is because the company has a large caught it and it's the produce sultan fertilizers at a much lower cost them their competitors. The way it does no we think low cost assets should drive profits and ultimately boost for. Now yeah you mention that their losses have really just been due to weather patterns in the midwest is there anything else that's really been hurt in this company to do we need to be worried about management of their input costs going on with Compass Minerals. I don't think so because they Q had they a large cost advantage to produce the ball. Home minister has done a pretty decent job investing in their low cost that's set to increase that competitive advantage gesturing and there are mote sources. So I I think the key major factor for carpet is going to be no fall and winter in the midwest. They have many main big competitors in that area where they pretty much the only player in town. So there largest competitor is Kate plus says it's the German company who produces the Morton's salt brand on uncertain when knows the umbrella girl in their consumer salt. But that's their largest competitor four. Again they have pretty large cost advantage over Morton. On. And defect that can produce bowl much cheaper which. Boost their profits when it snows. Whatever look at companies like this that are very specific I get a little bit concerned about evaluating their their revenues tend to come in pretty lumpy is that the case with this company where all their sales are really happening in you know six maybe four month time period and then the rest of the year it's pretty much just quieter how to. How does that work has management deal with that. Also you are right generally the winter months are went carpet this. False statement has been most sales but. In order sort of evens things out they have been investing more in their fertilizer business they just mean acquisition of a Brazilian. Fertilizer company last year to boost the third and fourth quarter sales. All they've also been trying to expand their stalled products more to the consumer and industrial paper products where demand is less he's you know. Well interesting company ticker symbol on that is a Ciampi and set thanks for joining us. Thank you. Seth Goldstein with morning start talking about Compass Minerals and as you mentioned a business like that I do look at it. And it's an interesting play but it does get a little bit narrow when you do worry about its revenue being disrupted. Just because it is such a narrowly focused business so. It's a company that if you take a look at it historically. It doesn't and to move around a lot in the long run but it can have some short term fluctuations definitely. That's all the time that we have for this hour. Mike Armstrong Tucker Silva and chuck is out of we're back later with more from our insurer maps dot com studios. Where they could fit into your investment portfolio Chaka wanted to talk about the different types of municipal bonds because I think that's a good starting base for this conversation. Yeah and in general there are two major types of municipal bonds there what we called general obligation bonds GOs and then we also have revenue bonds general obligation bonds tend to be a little bit more stable is they're not dependent on any one type of revenue coming from a state or city or rather their backed by what we call the full faith and credit of that municipality. All right so aren't there are ones that are more preferable to others currently Q1 would what would you consider one type of municipal bond. To be safer than another general obligation bonds tend to be because they can pull revenues from any stream coming in in order to pay. Those bonds revenue bonds on the other hands are typically coming from one source and airports revenue sports teams revenue something like that. And because of that they tend to be a little bit more unstable but he can also get higher yields on revenue bonds that's the trade off the face. Ari folks there's a lot that goes into the process. Given back a little bit of the games that we picked up yesterday near -- had some some uninteresting political statements. The marketplace yesterday is not terribly surprised. Let's talk about in an upcoming development in. Boston here there is a proposed Newbury Street. How how do you see the word. Answer I got I can't say this it's our medical marijuana dispensary always best as I don't know try to says I don't know if his. It is about having a mental block I don't know if it's. Dispensary. Yardage is and it's that dispenser dispenser I always in the basket dispenser which I think Jason Terry. And I I always others I have this huge hang about so this dispensary that they are at this dispensary that is proposed for Newbury Street. Voted down by by the bed. Yeah why did it get voted down. The concern is that it most of these medical Maryland facilities the assumption is that once recreational comes into you comes into full fruition and actually start selling recreational. Then all these medical dispensaries are just going to. They're just gonna move over to recreational and start supplying both and that is what gave the name a lot of neighborhoods and on action news why. Yeah exactly one high so here you are likely just agree with you guys you know here's my point of view on Newberry street when I was in my early twenties there was a lovely place there called daisy Buchanan's where. Pretty much you can drink until. You in some cases to talk about cute okay and he got tossed out and compute. And so. I sit there and I say COK with having this establishment there. That has literally people coming out and vomiting all over Newberry district excellent point because it absolutely happened all the time whereas it. You are afraid of someone going and and smoking in getting high and in sitting down and having a burrito or to marry her for. It's gonna be good is this the how much they're gonna be able to sell right down the street you know sounds the sounds he's going to be jammed with people on their reg recreational marijuana no nobody's it's been it's. In the same thing over and I completely disagree with the thought process but it's been consistent everywhere nobody wants a recreational dispensary in their backyard. And in the logic behind it probably isn't sound but it's been product has been illegal for. You know yours now years and years and years and that people just have a a tough time wrapping their heads around it and you know seem to realize that trying to seize towns who don't want it don't like money apparently just don't don't care for money at all like I just. I like Edwards or go to gonna disrupt the atmosphere Uighurs holds you go down Newbury Street like. 1 AM on a Friday night in there are people stop their heads in trash can pass. Throwing up because they've had too much to drink at you know that marijuana earlier wherever it is on on you know Tom have a it's like right. I just I just don't quite understand I'm not saying that everyone needs to go around smoking marijuana not saying that there's nothing wrong with that okay because there is. But when you literally have bars down the street and they have people stumbling out in late destroying parking meters like running in the cars and stuff like brick. I just don't know what ever what what the. Robin is here and by the way if there was a shot there by the way you can't go on the street smoking rate that really well so what's the problem. I really want us media to get all the riff Raff common and no we donor of compassionate organic Stew is looking to open the dispensary there has committed to saying. Even if I'm able to open a retail job I would not do that in this location will keep it medical only robots. So he's he's basically. You know it's compromised compromised with these votes but we'll see if it actually gets passed there's if there's medical Spencer on new rules that the wings they. Does appear to be right now but again if I were a local eatery around the area I would be pushing for the strongly. Okay. Strong to sing. Talk about Macy's Macy's bring someone in from eBay to try to shake up management bringing a little bit into talented. In majors needs to do anything can at this point shake things up. They announced. That how law then who. I was in charge. Vice president North America for eBay's going to be coming in and working as the president of Macy's to reshape things faith. They recently restructured a lot of there brands which allowed them to consolidate things and eliminate a hundred jobs which is supposed to save Macy's thirty million bucks a year. I don't know I'm not sure what the you know some executive from eBay's can be able to do turnaround basis at this point it's catching a falling knife I think. Is it bad that when I first saw this my first thought was that maybe the executive could start auctioning part of the company off on eBay. Netanyahu that's that's that's where my head went immediately it's like the companies do so poorly they wanna sell themselves on eBay. But trying to as you said find some additional efficiencies bringing some new technology platforms. Clean up things on the merchandising side will see if mister Lawton is able to. You know bring those things to the table there. But Macy's as you said this is a company. That the stock is pretty much been in freefall over the last decade now focus the company that today is trading at twenty dollars and 67 cents a share you go back just two years in the stock was trading at about seventy bucks a share socialist about 70% a span. Of two years now. And unfortunately it it just continues to be a real challenge for them just just to maintain. Their sales at this point this the company that over the last three years has seen their sales declined by 10% now so. Imagine you're an old employed Macy's day 41 K plans for this stock purchase plan over the years and a good portion of your retirement money right that stock. You just beat. Just how killers that in and Macy's was for better for worse I mean. I think it's fair to say that they were one of the crown jewels of kind of the the retail sec yeah terms like. Sears and Macy's. And that that retail segment you know so it's it's sad to see this happening and again there's still time for them to square this way this is not a company. It's going out of business right now there's still probable be profitable than they want to be okay. If you look at the last four years their profits have pretty much done down by about 50%. So they do over at the clock is ticking. But they're not gonna be out of business tomorrow and neither obvious asset right now has some real estate died of some of those key locations but they flagship store down in new York and Manhattan I mean. That's so it's unfortunate but that's by their biggest asset I think at this point there -- they do have some pretty some pretty prime real estate as you mentioned. Going on out west apple continuing to scale back their plans for a self driving vehicle. Ice at right when I started hearing about this I did not think this was a good. Business for them to get into it something bad new experience and it's something that I I didn't think it was going to be. Profitable enough for them and they do appear to be scaling this plan back what was originally called project titan yeah. So I mean they did jump right into this as a lot of companies did you know hand over foot saying we're going to build the first self driving car. I think today along with a lot of him to Google's Andy overs this roller realizing we have no interest in getting the auto manufacturing business that that was maybe it. Bit of an overstatement. Let's go work on the technology that's going to go into these cars in the building cars cute those who have been doing it for hundreds of yours for a hundred years. When you looked at where apple has been successful historically. And you take a look at kind of the the three. Biggest products that transformed that company you have the original Apple Computer which allowed people to do things that previously took a million different devices to do certain. You then go and you say OK in right around 2000 you have the iPod that you take a million different artists and you can have an all in your hand in one place. Seven years later 2007 you've got the iPhone you take again. Things that you previously needed a million devices for had to go physical places to take care. You have all in one place and hand the card doesn't. Fit that mold it's not about making people's lives easier and simpler by bringing everything to you it's about taking you somewhere else. And so I look at apple and I say what is the next industry. If it if I'm sitting there were Joni on who's the director of design at apple and I sit there and say look we're we need to go next. It's funny the things that people have to go somewhere to do right now. In and figure out how liking get those. Into the pol my hand. Yes I don't you're right so that's what they dream always done right and I am the gecko laziness is the mother of invention and out how can I be lazy. If if if like I look at a company like Google and it seems like they would have just that much better advantage on this they've where the the leader in them mapping out this country for the 20% here they've created the premiere mapping system. In the world at this point while that seems like it would lend itself to drive you know creating an automated vehicle technology. Apple. One they failed miserably in mapping you know creating a mapping software for the her for GP Apple's app rollout was terrible. I don't really see why this needs to fit into their business model wonderful Wal-Mart recognizes that with Google. Then. In terms of self driving cars there I realized the potential like cool has for the self driving cars and delivering packages with no drugs or save a lot of cost a lot of business to bees you know. Very impacted by the drive those cars we've obviously talked about Atlanta I just don't know where apple fits into that. One those lines really similar lines LG electronics is going to be putting a factory in non Michigan. To help build parts for electrical. So yes they're me producing a battery packs as you can imagine electric cars as needed huge reliance on batteries and elegy is one of the big providers of these so far there opening up a plant in the United States can initially employ around 300 people they've got existing plants in all over the world I think they've got places in China Vietnam Brazil. So. You know good they're brings in jobs obviously. A lot of this is probably in reaction to trump administration and you really promoting manufacturing here in the United States which could be good for if we can see some growth in this industry here in the states that can be very good for manufacturing jobs. Where to take quick break and coming back we're gonna have a little bit at trivia for you so we're going to be giving away a 25 dollar gas card make sure that you stick around for that and also. Going to be talking about Cooper and whether or not it is taken a hit in terms of its valuation is the company still worth seventy billion dollars. GM trying to even think of like all the regulatory problem rampant drug use in the on the president the sexual harassment problems that they've had. If it's it's been a rough year for movers say the least. And mutual funds that own Hoover now the the average individual can't just go out and buy Hoover but. Lot of funds that bought some of these pre IPO shares they were involved in the fund raising. Mutual funds are marking down Cooper shares by up to 15%. Fiat and that's a pretty you know big statement on what the concerns are about this company in the future. Vanguard principal and Hartford funds all mark down their shared by 15% hero cut the estimated price by 12%. Fidelity actually laughter awareness. That's fidelity and even black prodigy increase the share per yes like I actually busted up by tempers I had to have a really tough time justifying that were black rock. The days it's. It's really tough to value these things they're non publicly traded securities and you're just basically in charge of it guessing what the estimates on the value Guber are. But I think it's pretty reasonable to say that given all of the volatility. Regards CEO in the company that it's got a ticket hit. I know why yesterday we talked about Jeff MO potentially when I talkers and any update on not Calvin Johnson heading to Hoover you know. Coming due over Zell now and now what about the patriots. Amazon and groceries we've we are rather start Kroger and groceries talking about Amazon a little. Kroger is the biggest grocer in America now okay aside from Wal-Mart. And what are the things that I wonder about when we talk about online shopping for groceries he touched on this issue is. Dealing with produce that either looks bad taste better just is it okay yeah and how do you deal with that and one what do what does he talk about. Well I mean the first thing to us about is that. People need to get over reproduce and just deal with his own company actually that runs a business based on what grocery stores throw away because it's too ugly to put on their shelves yet. And so it talks extensively about that work with local food banks and during that that through it but I think he acknowledges that. That is going to be probably the toughest part of on line grocery shopping tempted to capture of how do we. You deal with basic customer dissatisfaction around non standardized products like fresh produce. And there's there's actually there's a company called imperfect produce at imperfect produced dot com you can go to and they actually will home deliver you produce that it. He's just as good as anywhere else but it just looks ugly so yep it might be as an example. A potato that looks like two potatoes because they're kind of attached to each other. It might be a carrot that instead of being perfectly straight kinda squiggles around too much. You know strawberry that's got a weird detonator something like that. Asparagus that is the rights you know things like that lemons that are kind of folded over into each other. So it's like there's some. Q can produce out there. But they also sell out 3050%. Cheaper than what they can typically get just because all the grocery stores that we we don't want them CNET. And we're either day. Obviously as the CEO of a company like Kroger you need to be concerned right now McMullen Rodney McMullen news CO and days being interviewed about this. In this acquisition by Amazon really is is main the main thing that he needs to be concerned about I've thanked. You gotta wonder what steps Kroger is going to be taking over the next few years because they need to do something if there and compete with the likes of Wal-Mart target him. The big thing that I want to see from Amazon is the single biggest thing that I think can be improved about the in store shopping experience right now is the checking account. Ticket counter is. Awful it's it is aimed especially if you let's say you're busy during the week can you go on the weekend and spent half an hour you know going around picking up all your stuff. And then all of us and gets another twenty minutes waiting in line because you have to get checked out I think the single biggest thing I'd like to see. Get everything tagged with RFID chips put it in your cart it automatically knows who you are and you just walk right out having already paid for. Try going to the Dedham. BJ's store at like 830. On any weeknight it is it is genuine. I've Wayne Willard I am like god I passed a raise I thought that was Wal-Mart and way M on Thursday pack. While this is insane when I went there I everything I waited in line in the in the fast check Allen like tonight in the last express line for. 25 minutes it's Saturday at night used that bat is incredible or yet there. Early diapers diapers formula. Up qaeda's mangoes and went to. Funniest chips bird seed and chocolate that's that's there now that the apple meet tree you know. Struggled a bit about electric bills in Rhode Island there is. There was just yesterday. Approval from state regulators that National Grid is going to be boosting rates by sixteen to 21%. Yet and I'm gonna make a pretty bold prediction here I think this is the first of many theories is that we are going to see the across the New England area. This and the reason this was approved. In the state of Rhode Island and as I believe that this case in many states across doing and the utility companies cannot make a profit. On the cost of energy they can only make a profit on the delivery and the on the distribute on the distribution they are not marking up the cost of distribution. They just saw internal cost the cost of energy go up by between sixteen point 4% in their past and consumer therefore I can't imagine a scenario where. You me and everyone listen in most people listen they're going to see increased utility rates come this winter and in this is. Thing that we have talked about. And quite a bit is that the electricity costs by states okay. Very pretty significantly throughout the directed the other of the fifty states and so if you take a look on a kilowatt. Per kilowatt hour basis okay. Rhode Island has one of the highest cost in the country in this is data right now and I'm looking at. From let's see here. This is the end of when he sixteen okay very recent. In Rhode Island the average cost per kilowatt hour with seventeen cents just over seventeen cents. Nationally it was about ten cents so we're paying sieve and these are sick and more and more on average OK how about it through the rest of New England. Vermont pays fourteen point four cents per kilowatt hours are about 40% more than the national. But had to Massachusetts. Sixteen point nine cents per carry out there. Almost 70% more okay Maine twelve. Twelve point 78 cents per kill one now. That 27% more. You continue to analyst LaMont who also note that Connecticut seventeen point 77 cents per kilowatt hour. It seems to mean may New Hampshire sixteen point 02. So my theory is going to be that the northern New England states Maine New Hampshire and Vermont we're getting more. Hydropower from Canada and therefore decreasing cost of that New Hampshire. Number doesn't really. Kind of blows a hole my theory. The only two states that are above. The New England states in the country are Alaska and Hawaii. Like big thing about it we have more expensive electricity in New England than every other state in the country in the league except for Alaska and Hawaii. My parents who had down in North Carolina they patent on nine point 37 cents per kilowatt hours electricity in North Carolina is literally half the cost of what it is. In New England. Richard point 21 big issue that's cause that's what would be your guess lack of natural gas pipelines ago lack of natural gas pipelines and inability to get to we've been talking for awhile about trying to wanna get Hydro powered down candidate we don't have that coming through. We are just in New England fight these things tooth and nail to our own detriment. It's no one wants in their backyard but the problem is we all have to pay extra than just outrageous at more than you national ever you are paying 70% more. Then the national average for your electricity. Because we do not have enough pipeline capacity to get the natural gas in and so what do we do instead we bring it in on these big expensive ships were asked to be what will biting cold. They have helicopter escorts because of the thing blows up. Everything has gone up to 495. And I just it's RRR utility policy in New England is just quite poor when it comes to dating. The the resources that we need. To the utilities and so unfortunately because that. Here in Rhode Island. Your electric bills going up an additional sixteen to 21% to keep mind it was seventeen point one cents per kilowatt hour. Last year. This is gonna be bumping that up by more than three cents yeah. And that's you go to your go to twenty cents per kilowatt hour you're gonna be twice the national I've the national average has changed your media that's I guess huge it's it's pretty remarkable here. Some other news coming out of Rhode Island housing sales dropped 4% in July. Yes we saw the same thing in Massachusetts. Housing sales dropping because there is just no inventory. The report noted that the inventory of homes for sale in Rhode Island in July I was fifteen point 6% below that same level in July of last year. Just incredibly low inventories across the entire New England area. Not a whole lot of inventory there in Connecticut. Death Democrats in the Connecticut state house. Are seeking an increase in the sales tax from six point 35% to six point 85 to try to work to balance the budget. I think the door taxes I think Connecticut needs to do the long study on the state of Illinois. And see where there stated I think it is really close to falling tractor stated. I think in the state of Illinois probably has more potential economic activity in the state of Connecticut does I'm very concerned Thursday. Instant and what's amazing here Connecticut right now. Their debt rating is double A minus okay Illinois. Was double A back in 2008 in two day they are bbb city could sit here and say just wait a huge city and say look at it is about five to seven years behind Illinois right now. And not in great shape and in fact if you look at the credit ratings by states okay. In go through and kind of take a look Illinois is the single worst rated state in the country. There's no one else has tripled but there's there's no one else there. But if you gotta go real close by. Jerseys get there jerseys a mine is now assume it's only one click away Kentucky is a plus so it's only two cooks really three clicks away at this point. And then he got Connecticut all lumped in with you know along the lines of Connecticut you've also got West Virginia. Kansas Michigan and Pennsylvania so it's Mikey after dale is ultimately is not in good shape. When it comes to its finances right now in more taxes aren't the answer. Mean that they'd Dave. Are really trying to look at budgets and they're just day there's complete disagreement on how to deal with this six point 85% sales tax I agree is not the correct way to deal with this budget issue. But there they're all playing hardball their tarmac severely noise or talking about severely cutting school funding if they don't get this budget passed there's another freight train coming down the road for Connecticut and a couple years as well and that's once the Massachusetts casinos get opened up. Oh who for masters is gonna head down to foxwoods and Mohegan anymore if if if you're in the western part of the state is a great we've got Springfield right here if in the eastern part is that he's a great we're going to ever. Like. I kicked Connecticut has some real problems coming to it's it's not gonna get easier for. I mean not to mention you ballooning pensions the same issue that every State's dealing with but it. You know there's dead roughed population dared to small population. They've got jobs that are moving out of the state they got less companies paying corporate taxes they are in for. A real big issue if. If you want to look at the model for trying to get out of this you look at what New York did over the last thirty years to New York back in the seventies was in bad shape yeah okay what they do they said look we need to increase our pension contributions we need to reduce future benefits we need. Everyone's got to take it somehow as otherwise we're all going down to get button and they got their house in order they they took care of everything. City Dallas just did something similar they said look. We're gonna go to what I believe it was the firefighters the police union and they said look we're gonna require you to pay more into the pension. We're gonna be required to pay more into the pension as well we're going to scale benefits back a little bit for new hires. And within fifteen years we're gonna have our house in order. And that's what you have to do it doesn't happen overnight you can't fix these problems in a week that is they didn't happen for it took Connecticut 2030 years to get to this. And so. It's not a problem without a solution it is a problem without an easy solution everyone has to feel some pain because if you don't you get appealed anyways refusing to act is still acting. I don't see any short term solution on this so it is Wednesday and with it being Wednesday. Powerball day I'll get. Album day I did what has yet I winnings from the oven and chuck talker. It's gonna be 700 million dollar I want seven dollars the other night you view it under the radio times that much more dollars on tickets that's true pace the like to be fair you got to spend money to make money it okay seven Ira Miller that listeners that is not how the powerball winner got to spend money to make money it's the golden rule of business so powerball the 700 million is the the headline number for the thirty year annuity. Security suffered through securities America and members finreg SIPC and advisory services arbiters securities America advisors think Gary Armstrong representative Armstrong advisory group in the securities America companies are unaffiliated. Vote on our daily poll question had financial exchange Joseph Johns come out why you're there fire of the media player and watch the show while you work. This case the financial exchange radio network. The. The question is which degree gives me the highest average salary once they graduate from college. Person but the answer is Sarah burger from the castle red dot com and Sarah thank you for joining us. It Sarah let's talk a little bit about. That the value of a college degree right now we know that not all majors are created equal in terms of what they allow you to do and what daylight earned after you graduate. Let's start first at the bottom what are what are some of the lowest earning majors on average in this study that you did. Though we found that delete idle causing major or actually this deal are. Human services to meet and menial organization and composition and rhetoric miscellaneous fine arts and then in my act places actually clinical psychology. Any additions you examining the median income for those. Majors the a look at the unemployment. Which should do what charm. Which majors have the highest unemployment rates of curious. So it. But income and waited a bit heavier band unemployment rate by overwrought take into account the consideration. Those bottom chlorine. Majors didn't do well with unemployment rate on the flip side we haven't engineering metres Billy do you have well unemployment rate than in high medium income. How big was the difference in terms of the us salary is the topic and compared to the low end majors. Yes style and illustrate that in the median. Annual income for petroleum engineering is app engine there you point out again 41 dollars. That was the number one spot. And then the last place the clinical psychology. Amen Neal on the median income for that means you're at 43000. And 98 dollar and clearly. If that is that they get trained and they're both just for bachelor degrees the what you major it can really impact. Typically you eat after college. And and so it seems to me that in general it's the the majors that are giving. Graduate specific skills especially in what appeared to be kind of niche areas appear to be the most valuable and the ones that are more. Material and Mitt lake learning material base is opposed to concrete skills seem to be lagging all the. Yes so we act they found that animals you have to get around disparities in the ranking before you find and meet today is not stand me. Since then science technology engineering and mathematics are very indicative field to go in you know. Anything that people are a bit surprised that Anthony's ethernet clinical psychology and lack. I mean chains that you know economy is very lucrative field. But able legally pay up as he again why they can't agree on that for some of these meters ambient completely necessary to be accurately. Meek get money. Goodwill Sara thank you very much for the time we appreciated today. That is Sarah burger from the castle red dot com talking about the highest and lowest earning college majors. So here's the big question to me. If that is the case wire read the American taxpayers subsidizing. The cost of loans to these degrees for these bottom five. Good question Bair has that question to I have an answer to Baird isn't particularly like the answer. And the reason is that if you look at the cost educate someone in engineering vs the cost educate someone. Ian psychology. The engineering kids are far more expensive to educate because they require additional technology additional training and so forth and so you could certainly say OK we're going to make each student paid. Just what is required for their major. But then also in the cost of engineering degree goes up by 50%. And people say and not sure that I want to pay that much and the cost of psychology Greig degree goes down by 50%. Yeah I think you. We. As a government to decide what is what majors are important to us and you can still go study these different light I don't know about that you start to get into what kind of planning things from and from an economic basis there. Am I I don't have an issue with that if we're gonna be subsidizing the cost of these loans I don't see. Why the US taxpayer should and shouldn't decide which you know which which types of educations they want subsidized. Well let's look at the the purpose of higher education because not to get a job. Herbs fire education is not to get a job. No college in there. Charter says that this colleges founded in order to get you would jump -- it's what we use today. To try to justify whether or not we should hire some one. But it's not what the system was intended to do and that's part of the reason why the cost is so high is that colleges not the system that is built. For vocational training them so. I think part of the problem is that we're trying to squeeze in a square peg into a round hole fair and I think that is the problem that needs to be addressed knots him with saying are you one states ecology we're not gonna give you any money. All right well were remain at disagree on that one so. In any case I do want to what talked a little bit about our friends at the insurer match agency they exist to make sure.
