And. This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chokes. We're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your use of lead to a world. Stay informed and today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and shocks. And the. Price of gold this rally stocks have been selling off. The Vicks is up 44%. Analysts are predicting 8000 point decline in the Dow. And our president is engaged in the war of words with North Korea hi everybody it's Berrian chart with you here on a Friday and a lot to digest in one. Yeah it's been a a little bit of a topsy turvy week as we Islam scrap it you know it's. Obviously yesterday the Dow ending off about 200 points S&P down about one quarter percent so. There really the first yes negative move that we've seen in the market in quite some time now and still a relatively controlled move. In the broad scheme of things ever again EDS and you know it's not a case where you saw the market take you know three or 4% dip. You know you see the headline 200 points but 200 points isn't what it used to be you know Dow's 22000 so it's it's a less than 1% move. On the Dow little more than 1% on the S&P. But there's no doubt that markets. Or would that spoke right now you buy high heels and the predictions of volatility American Opel the. They look at gold but I mean that that's gonna Iowa's look at truck and you've got some pretty Smart people ray Galileo who I know you have a lot of respect for out of Bridgewater associates in Connecticut. Mean he's saying you should have you know 510% your money invested in gold I'm not sure I agree with that but I did see. That the average trade size for this one gold dealer increased by more than a 120%. From the there are normally doing 625000. Dollar transactions. And it is increased to 1406000. Dollars that's a big jump. Yeah they're they're seeing big jumps in the the trades that people were placing right now just that the size and scale them. And gold since the start of July has gone from about 1223 and outs of 1290 tussaud's about a 6% bump that you've seen. In the price of gold over the last six weeks here it's pretty directly coincided with what we've seen. Coming out of view of the rhetoric from. North Korea and from the United States right. What day of the week the headline in today's Wall Street Journal fever and news. Fear gauge jumps to 2017 high fueling record trade talk about the volatility index the vick's. And the the only thing I've ever known about the Vicks. I don't look at it is terribly good predictor of future market activity maybe describe what this is the vixens and and how people treat. You know what what the Vicks is it something put together by the CBO weave this via Chicago board of options and and pretty much what it does is it measures the projected volatility in those options going forward okay. Simple way of saying that it's how much people expect stocks to move in the near future so. Volatility your member can be both in the positive and negative direction doesn't mean one way him and still win the vick's rises it saying hey there's a greater chance right now that you're going to see large moves in the future OK and we see a big move like that one day it's pretty neutral and to see a 44% move. It's not. 21 usual like stated these low -- you see those once or twice a year typically like it's not too crazy to see something like that you should see with that looked like back in October of 2000 and I can tell it is actually pulled it out to Jeff who was just take a look at some of tell it right down the reading his way to sixty in there with a reading sixteen so. To put this in perspective on August 22 of 2008 the Biggs was trading. Right around on 1918 point 8110 OK so pretty much saying hey did you know this is that market was not spooked because the average tends to be around telling August you know it was it eighteen and the vick's back in the when you go forward too little after. October 17 okay you go forward there. The vick's spiked north of some of them did but remember the markets to also another 3000 points from bear down until march of 09 OK so. You know the vick's it's not a great forward looking predictor necessarily but it it does say hey look there's still going to be volatility can you remember even after Lehman Europe and 800 point days it was 800 dollars 700 down the next day while more calm down and up to you had an awful lot of those so. You know that the vick's it's it's a good way to just kind of gauge sentiment and and gauged how much people being the market's going to move but it's not a great predictor of what direction now moves going to be certain. Lot of people suggesting that we're gonna see a 5%. Correction. Before the sell off is over. That would mean about a thousand points on the Dow that would bring it's under 21000 on the Dow and down to what about 2330 on the absentees you have right in that ballpark the S&P right now 2445. C take it back 5% and yet -- 12330. You could see you might not again that. The problem with this markets up today he here's the problem is when you're looking at the market and how it tries to value the different options that are out there okay. We've talked about the economy relatively easy for the market to get a handle on what's going on the economy GP micro one half percent but there's chance can be won a quarter of his chance to be one and three quarters. And he can predict that based on past movements. When he tried to talk about geopolitical things. Trying to value that tail risk he says okay what's the chance that you end up in a shooting war with North Korea. Is it 1% is a point 1% is that point 1% woody negatives to it would have the stats tonight. That no one knows me knows no one has any it did there's no way to value of because there's only one person making that decision and these are there any say. What's what's he going to do you you don't necessarily know. Then you go out you say okay what's the chance that North Korea sends whether ICB own somewhere well it is at point 0001%. Is it you know less than that isn't. You don't know his its its not something just the unknown that's causing in what makes it's so difficult is. The study of economics it's the study of the herd mentality it's what do a lot of people duke is that's what the economy is its group behavior. We talk about politics it's the behavior of one person it's it's so hard to figure out percentages for that and that's why it's so hard to price is risk. Well right now we can tell you these market's been open for 41 minutes 42 minutes in the Dow's up 57 points so. You read into it what you will I don't think anybody pretends to have the answers inching to see the comets coming out of China. As a relates to North Korea. On Gerald watch this market. From three to 4 PM tonight. Well this this is gonna be one of those I had a lot of people don't wanna hold stocks are heading into weekend this is the kind of day where you'd expect to see not assert not a huge sell off but you would I be a little bit of a slide head in that last hour of trading. Is where I expect to see a lot of people closing out positions because they don't wanna be holding them over the weekend in that but he. If you really just great would you think about. Invest it and yeah you know like great news Warren Buffett would laugh. That's open don't you find it kind of funny it is accused one of the things that I find funny about the market. Why is only open from 930 afford. It's all done by computers you know right people only why don't we just let it trade 24 hours a day. What's what's the problem and what are what that would do to volatility particular lot of volatility. I would imagine I mean you're gonna have all the sudden new cycles become. Lessons or it's you don't have all the Dow opened down to near 200 points its way you know you saw these slides during the night and people were able to price things and I have wondered in today's day and age why do you need to have regular market at 24/7 don't want to just let it go all day. Just thought for Friday yeah. Actually I hope that doesn't happen because I will be. And oh yeah here's the reason you're gonna look like me you're gonna have no hair I'll I would be worked all thought I'd be thought this when the Mario opened are we all guilty of a check in our portfolios and for all day. Alden that's that's that's who we do we tell people not to that we go to do it ourselves. We're talking about zero rent this is exciting because zero rent isn't method for landlords to collect their rent electronically but there's now. Find refining Jane that it's being widely adopted by Condo associations tell everybody was he rented. All right so he rented the product we innovated leader being. Nominee can be found it www. So there's several managers first in saying goodbye to being reliant on the use Postal Service. Goodbye to delays in the mail and no more need for paper check right. Where it's really a laudable and needles don't even have a check where getting that all the time away in the oval call in and sign up because his tendon saying you didn't check the British really starts to get funnies when you your landlord in you have multiple tenants living in unit grad students the university. These people first who refuse to sell are dominating the housing market the reporter on this story for shot go pol from. Bloomberg and he joins us today on the financial exchange I duper shot. Go out good so per shot what percentage. Of owner occupied houses. Are old by people over age 55 today. So that's it he 3%. At. Jump firm about a decade ago forty in response. So ten yet while and and and what what. Like what's the what do you attribute to that too would like why is it that's a huge move. For. People over 55 today owned 53% of the available rules. Yeah interestingly I request. I am sure look up and down on won't look back all of it and 19100. Which is our balcony. Listen I certainly. Local. Reasons. The you know what what is it that is very much. Group of people in them Tuesday rumors were huge break in the human control population. He. Share. These houses and so why would that be. I want. The boomers are rooting harder here you know we're working on her. AJ McLean. So for those reasons. Yeah you know they're they're less likely to one. I sister sister Alex. The house that they've been and her long time. On another thing is that they didn't hurt on the downside. And the it started market uses. These are some things all the ones so it's the same car. Was there it's a very tight market and on but. They're they're kind of pick and why I would say boo yeah. You know it's you know remove it possibly could be very expensive program went out and play. Would dead wood about millennial stumble any ill defined as eighteen to 34. What percentage of millennial lose or owning real state vs a decade ago. Well you don't know what it's all. We want their kids about eleven post and yell out in the most of those numbers in these. All manner you know interestingly you look at. Boomers and their. You're certainly sentence early eighties. They haven't about why. That sheer. Of occupied housing so. There are no more. You know one of the advantages the burgers they came master. Silent Generation which is Britney. A much smaller group of people so they weren't. Didn't they weren't spreading up against that honorees in the same with oil. The giants would should they were up by. We would do what's gonna cost the a break in the logjam here he had people young people that are really struggling they wanna buy a house. And yet boomers just don't seem to be willing to part with them that way with wins the tipping point. Well. One thing is like you know put let them as them. It seems it may be the cultural sense that people over. Populist and then so be it community and they've they've you know been in there alive and orders something. I'm so they want because the front of them. And you know for good reason so. The failure by picking up the outlook is. Expected to those sorts of things. So over time they like over the next 1020. Years now and searching people you know. The horse believe for whatever reason you know maybe it assisted. Living there. War you know the certain he people dying and you know that happens I want. To make that story that. He says there's going to be adequate sell off but he says that the that the and years. On the road and at that point he thinks that our. Markets. The sort of option or crash. Because you know they'll what people want out of the market. Great value these sort of invisible on the court. He owns or not. I'm coming out of the markets and you know people were shopping turns out things. That are. Per shot thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. Thank you are shot go call Bloomberg talking about boomers not willing to sell their homes and chuck I I can tell you as a boomer. When I look around my peers now you're here you're 58 you're 62 you're 64 you're still working yup. In your saying to yourself well. You know the transactional costs associated with moving. Are upwards of what six to 8% maybe maybe higher in India have to pay it on the buy side as well. I mean you look at it and you say. I didn't tell you that but I have a lot of friends that live in houses they don't need. Four of the bedrooms. That the that they have. And yet nobody spinning them in years and I think this is one of the most under talked about reasons why you have low housing inventory now it's it's not the people. Just people it's not that they don't want to Silva just choosing not to because they say look it's just too much hassle they say look I want to sell my house but I don't wanna go through paying all those costs and everything and so they decide not to. And and the other thing is there's no inventory on the low end rubio and so it created this bottleneck where. There's just not enough turn over happening in housing and that's that's I think the key problem that you're seeing right now. Is there's just not enough turn over there in the works have gotten gunned. Well in you know but boomers had lots of kids millennial don't have many kids if any. And so a boomer when they do sell or put their five bedroom colonial up. In the boot and millennial serious they would want to five bedroom house we re getting in and and we don't want three car garage we want to. You know three bedroom house and a one or two car. Right exactly it's that there's a mismatch between the types are housed the millennial want to buy in the types out as the boomers are trying to sell so. It's. There's a combination of a number of different pieces that unfortunately. Has kind of gotten is in his gotten us into this place where inventories are depressed in the you're just not seeing an up out there. And so prices have continued to rise largely I think on the back. Of low inventories do we know incomes are going up now did you were we we don't have prices rise in gazing comes in shooting through the group. If sting to see the results of our poll thus far we asked as a baby boomer. Do you plan on selling your home the next five years Tucker and 45%. Are saying now. Probably gonna sell my house in the next five years 55% say no thanks and keep an like close 5050 here now and very interest in. Coca-Cola. You know we've had conversations about this in the past. And I sort of feel like clairvoyant to hear you're dead on with this you know we have a a dig economy. And it is catching a lot of taxpayers by surprise. Yeah and in particular what's happening is as people moved away from jobs that W two basting come where taxes are withheld and so forth. You're seeing a huge rise in the number of 1099 workers who don't realize that they have to withhold taxes themselves and make estimated payments and things like that. In order to make sure that they're not running and any penalties and they do and wrong or they're not doing it the right way it's not working out the way that they hope its not working out the way they anticipated. Time now for my whole street watch a look at the market's performance so far today but I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. Mike Armstrong joins us now for Wall Street watch Mike thanks for coming on. Let us talk a little bit about another vick's volatility appears to be spiking a little bit what we see. Yeah well left person obvious reasons mainly the action in North Korea and there are rhetorical rhetoric on all of that these six indexes up for the course 44% yesterday. Which brings the weekly total increase up to 71%. This index really get like you said measures volatility in the markets how much stocks are trading up and down how frequently. And at the highest level that we've had since the elections are clearly some somewhat nervous investors two in the market. Talk about a couple stocks that are off more than 10% today JC Penney off 16%. After reporting earnings. Now down below four dollars a share. How bad is it. Yeah you don't feel like a kind of beating a dead horse on all these retailers here but yeah very bad quarter for JC Penney they actually have higher sales than anticipated but still had a larger loss than anticipated to what that tells me is that. Even though there have been drives and people at their stores are still not really being able to generate any thing in a wave of profit they lost 9% share verses. Expect it will lose about five cent a share yesterday had really bad news that basic schools and Dillard's all of those were down. Nordstrom's the only one with decent cops sales but he can never be they were being dragged down with the rest of them just for being in the same sex. Also down 10% they snapped. The maker of snapshot. Is down a little over 10% to 1231. What what do they show in their our earnings report. Well so I think one of the big issue that's that is. Dealing here is they've always been a very private company and they went to Wall Street you know to earn capital but they're not really playing by the typical Wall Street games so they don't provide earnings guidance to analysts and so therefore. Analysts are coming out these predictions that are just. Clearly not reasonable for the company to achieve that. Baseless and here they added seven point three million daily users which is a four point 2% growth trade that was lower than analysts expected it 5% they missed on revenue which reached a 181 point six million again sales were expecting more. They lost sixteen cents a share. This while the they had this 443 million dollars it was quadruple. The law if they had back in Q2 of sixties youth. If this stock is now well below the IPO price and you know they just suffered from a lot of competition replaced. There are good Mike thank you for the time. Mike Armstrong talking about today's happenings on Wall Street Atlanta based pharmacist John Hamburg ten invented Coca-Cola in the year 1886. However his bookkeeper Frank Robinson came up with the product's name. Frank also created the unique flowing script that would become Coca Cola's local. And Virginia from Weymouth was the first person with the right answer Virginia takes on the 25 dollar gas card to shell. And trivia today is brought to you by the Armstrong advisory group call 800. 393. 4001. Incident your free no obligation consultation today that's 80393400. The gig economy has led to an increase of people under paying their taxes will be given the numbers according to the Internal Revenue Service data. The number of tax filers penalize truck for under paying estimated taxes. Rose nearly 40%. Between years 2010. And 2015 to ten million from nearly seven point two million that's all I think related to the vast majority that my guess struck would be related to. Who Burke. And lift because those companies report the earnings to them the driver. And they also report the yearnings to the Internal Revenue Service were taxi drivers. That wasn't reported. I think your 100% spot on with this I think it's primarily related to those two services and everything else that's in gay areas in the grub hub but yet it it absolutely is if I think it's people who previously they've got W two income where it's a get my pay stub every two weeks that taxes are withheld. Hey Hoover doesn't withhold taxes or maybe you don't need to pay them no you do and if you don't even with a nice little penalty. Featured. Oh yeah light houses are completely sold out of the light houses Russia or Leno is okay depends on what kind of a fresh out alight. What kind of bronco vary but in 1992. And a white Ford Bronco. Was. Less than. That's in good shape and it was owned by OJ Simpson. I'll point oh its view like probably it is the white Bravo it's the way bronco what's been owned by Mike Gilbert who was Simpson's agent. And Gilbert had bought it pretty much saying he didn't want it to be floating around new kind of touring the world in this in the but he is offering it for sale on Monday's episode of pawn stars. On the History Channel while what's it gonna go 40. Man I would say close to 250 minutes I was gonna say 150 to 200. And so now. I think it's it's a major part of history. Onion that you guys are both you're saying 150 I'm saying to 5250. Him and say a hundred I'll take a hundred I think the the gentleman's gonna ask for 500 are we had to go closest. To the the dollar got to be closest but he can't go perceived price is right. All better to all of them. The great is that always the guy that doesn't. While way to take the fun all those are two out of 250. OK you won fifty I'll go 150 aren't we have to pull the story aside put it on the prediction law Berri saying underground. Art. Who knows. Bill Riley. Bill O'Reilly. I I I find this is where it's very difficult to seek coming here coming out of and now the little Riley's gonna go once Ian he's being given interview. Not gonna be a regular no it's I find this it. It's interesting that he's going on CNN now lay's friends of smirk on. He is but it's still that's a big move for him to make you know he's he is. Bass that network relentlessly now page at tell you what CNN wants to get some ratings. They give Michelle oh they won't give Michelle not a chance now not agency near ratings it nobody watches and there's zero chance that they give Michelle real. That what what overlaps the have a penny there audience. Really think about the witty yet twenty million people watch intimate night dental why would bill Riley Cote actually it. It would be kind of interesting to see them do that just because you would see anyone who watches CNN their heads gonna explode trying to figure out what CNN's doing. Any and have a whole bunch people watch Fox News who does that I've never watched CNN who say. Now what do I do and nobody is watching so I don't know how I would Edwards Edwards just explode. I would rather have bill Riley had in maybe he does get up to twenty million BP gets ten right ten million people would I don't think they bring him on. Well anyway he's gonna make an appearance on smerconish show on a Saturday morning and is not a great time slot but it at any rate Tia. I'd I never thought we'd see him on there at all no no. GE's new CEO bets two point seven million dollars that he can revive the stock while I hope somebody revives the stock because it's been a stinker for the last year. Yeah he bought a little over 6151000. Shares worth of GE stock last week. Or rather he now owns that I design Atlanta and all odd couple 100000 yes so his total stake in the company is now we're fifteen point six million. And if what you wanna see from new CEO coming in taking over saying look I'm betting on myself to be able to turn this around and and you know it's it's going to be interesting to see you kind of where he goes. At this point out part of it that you do have to take with a grain of salt. There is a requirement at GE for the CEO to own company's shares totaling ten times his or her starting salary. So he doesn't have to buy an additional four point six million dollars worth of GE stock at some point but it still is good to see hey OK on the on. I'm all in on. If you know your Dylan right you pianist turned the company would better place to investor money. Exactly and Jamie Dimon gave Taylor damaged JPMorgan stocks on the east of Jamie diamonds has a billion dollars yeah. Up next we'll be joined by mr. Hi everybody it's very Armstrong and I'm joined today by pot luck ski from law firm of cushy in Dolan. We're talking about protecting your assets from long term care expenses taught. If a spouse enters a nursing home Howard joint bank accounts and joint brokerage account like investment accounts mutual fund shares are they at risk and and and how does it vary for single individual. So if you're married doesn't matter whether it's a joint bank account our joint investment account. Everything. Is considered accountable for Medicaid eligibility and you know what else there that's not mentioned here how about IRA accounts from. IRA retirement accounts also at risk for the cost of long term care so it doesn't matter whether to joint brokerage or joint bank account. You gotta put all the money on the table. And start from there. Different however when your single engine right so when you're single they have a different rule. Joint bank accounts with a child you throw to hit on as a joint owner right they do it all the time. If you do that then the joint bank account is deemed 100%. That risking. Unless you can prove that that other person put money and we know they do it again you know look who Social Security numbers on look who's. Pensions going in there and look who Social Security's going in there. That's for bank accounts. For investment accounts fidelity account of the world right it's deemed. 50%. Or pro rated. Based on the number of owners on the account so if there's a spouse if there's one child on the air and 50% of that would be deemed. Not at risk so interesting distinction between the two. But advanced planning always the best. Learn how to protect your assets from long term care expenses by calling Cushing in Dolan at 8668485699. You can download this month's guide. The financial exchanges live on FaceBook and YouTube watch Barry and Joseph discuss the issues of the day and see which one smiles at the most. Is who's the financial exchange radio network. Well the markets are moving near the Dow up 59 points as the correction over. But that is good little political quick trigger there at the let's wait till the end of the day one way to 340 level you still think he gets a market movement the end of the day last hour today could be fun. Talk about the deficit jock the yeah US government ran a deficit of 42 point nine billion dollars. For the month of July. They've got me eighties borrowing limit coming up with the into the fall where it early fall. Somewhere in late September early October is where we are projected to hit the debt ceiling and so during the first ten months of the fiscal year. The budget deficit was 566. Billion dollars about 11% larger than the same period time last year there. Our desk Larry about that and have a conversation about budget deficits Larry welcome to the show. Larry eight I was just talking to chuck about the F 43 billion dollar budget deficit in July. I think I use is 566. Billion. Over the last ten months. Help us get over the fear of budget deficits going forward widget. Well. If you're. Well it about 33. I have strategy paid you know public. Most of the budget deficit. Believe enough. In coming from. And long term trend it's about our economic growth that he cannot balance the budget. But let the economy is growing to a maximum potential. For example. In the last let's say ten years. We've been growing at 33 and a half or 4%. True. Yep pretty close to about budget honestly because the actual spending. Has not been a problem and believe it or not. Once you have the obamacare. Stimulus package. Which was put a cause close to a trillion dollars that lasted two years some such deal and they grew runaway. And spending that has been around 20% of GDP. Which is pretty good. Devote their forever. You'd probably you know like that that would kill so I'm I'm just saying. The principal cause of the deficit if you're not getting enough revenues to be having of growth. Haven't had. Taxable income. And I can only be sick in my view. But I. It's kind of died in the economy and that's another reason he had me. Why this corporate tax cuts got to go through people's well that's ritual that both presidents it means a lot yeah it means the law. Well and and running a deficit is not the worst thing in the world isn't in me they don't lead. And that that's sort of trying to emphasize it and the difficulty here Larry's for the last eight years Republicans were thrown rocks at Democrats for running up the deficit. I think we should anticipate that during the next few years were probably gonna increase the deficit went. You maybe. Not millions out. I mean I think it. I don't like TV news CBO numbers but I I think it does go up and I think it right itself and that it Barber's 600 billion dollar area. But it. It's barely. About three again three to 4% of GDP I mean if stop off I don't love it. Year you spent in the nation's debt. But on the other hand. It's not failure it. Too much attention is given to the deficit Irsay and knotted up at an underlying factors. Are going to habitat. You know and again I come back at this point grossed almost budget. All the time. The way to do so he'd need to regain you're broke and yet of course you need to limit spending I agree with that but I just think it. I've been out there and go bomb here except that crazy stimulus package but all of its fiscal multiplier is supposedly what didn't work. The Republicans kind of shut them down on bad and no conservatives say you'll you'll spend too much. But the reality is about 12% GDP now believe historically. Almost. Where are they with tax reform now learn any news. Well yeah we had they did last night with respect Kevin Brady chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. And are. Our committee to unleash prosperity and all of I can't it was off the record dinner but I data argues very optimistic good back he's it was rather optimistic about the entire package. Both the individual side and the business side now way that it out. Remains to be seen but then how is doing well. They're gonna have a marked up fairly soon. And get out to restore. September early October or something like that toe he said he was optimistic about it. I can tell you Larry and I did I'd give you this information for what it's worth it the man on the street you're next door neighbor my next door neighbor. They want to see. Comprehensive return ink that reform including personal tax reform I think they're gonna be upset. And I know you are a proponent of doing corporate tax reform that's the priority but I can tell you just. From that the emotional standpoint. You guys need to recognize we want the personal tax reform simultaneously. Well if you can get that it would be terrific. All four I don't know if you go. The that Kevin Brady. Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee last night that we would get personal. And that was doable I think this admission is in the better. But it's doable period of time to do it by the end of this year or the first quarter of this year there is time. Well it gets better but I will argue. Particularly with trying for a million small businesses out there you know that math that is a personal tax cut. Good effect. Self employed out these and so forth. I've got a big business they come but that amounts to a personal tax cut as well but sure you want the whole package. Of corporate. Anyway well that given the white too many. A point that Kevin was an optimist is very out. Good good Larry thank you very much for your time we appreciate it thank you Larry Kudlow senior contributor to CNBC talking to us about tax reform and I know. You know leave. From out personal perspective when you talk to your buddies and he talked to guys that are. Doctors lawyers. Salesman accountants. Truck drivers anybody who's an employee is saying and pay. I understand why you need corporate tax reform but I want some too. And I fully understand that and I hate to be the bearer of bad news that the corporate side is what's gonna get done and I I don't know. I I I know that the personal size of the and he can see tangible in every paycheck because it makes you feel that you go home and you say hey honey with an extra. Forty bucks and our paycheck president a thousand bucks in the paycheck it's that you know thousand fifties and OK you know now we can go out and you know send our you know daughter we are tennis lessons. And this and not only that you got a raise so you know year and you get some overtime and and you know this week we need couple re. Raises an overtime workers or make it about an extra four and a half percent yup you know adding a tax cut and be part of you feel pretty good dozer. Hi everybody it's very and chuck from the financial exchange were having a conversation today. Regarding municipal bonds a lot of you've heard about municipal bonds but you may not understand. Where they could fit into your investment portfolio chuck I wanted to talk about the different types of municipal bonds because I think that's a good starting place for this conversation. Yeah and in general there are two major types of municipal bonds there what we called general obligation bonds GOs and then we also have revenue bonds general obligation bonds tend to be a little bit more stable is they're not dependent on any one type of revenue coming from a state or city but rather their backed by what we call the full faith and credit of that municipality. All right so our dear ones that are more preferable to others aren't like anyone would what would you consider one type of municipal bond. To be safer than another. General obligation bonds tend to be because they can pull revenues from any stream coming in in order to pay. Those bonds revenue bonds on the other hands are typically coming from one source and airports revenue sports teams revenue something like that. And because of that they tend to be a little bit more unstable but he can also get hired you. On revenue bonds that's the trade off the face Ari. Folks there's a lot that goes into the process. This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and sharks done us. Do you believe in you know courts. No seriously I. I pointed out of 1 big ones I am I'm talking about you know Koreans in the vein of our conversation. Regarding. Who say how I wanna and I know people boy talk about a well it's a fascinating. Cased that name a business other than over there and Amazon name businesses transform society more in the last five years him. Now they're very good good point good point in and transformed a lot of lives not all for the better mind you. But I want to talk about it in the standpoint from the standpoint of he is just giving very interest in Travis coli is now being sued. By some of his biggest invest. You're the biggest investor in new pursuing him benchmark capital. Who owns about 20% of the company controls. A significant stake in the control about 20% of the stake is well how much is Travis ten. So it's a little complicated exuberance to share classes he owns 10% the company stock at 35% of its class B shares of that company stocks would actually that would actually matters okay. And so. Pretty much Travis has reportedly been telling people that he's trying to get back into his position. At Hoover as C well the I thought we dispelled that earlier this week win Hughes. Chief operating officer says that's not true in Garrett was this name. It and said you know Travis doesn't wanna come back he's not coming back the witch is dead I've I've seen this before it kind of ticked at the same way you know when an NFL Irwin and a college football coach says I'm not leaving here no matter what then a week later takes another job you know you know you're always not doing something until you walked. So I take it all with a grain of salt but why would they sue. They guy who's got a lot of control over the country because he only holds 10% of the stock but he has 16% of the voting. So this is why. This is something where I think that become I think benchmark capital who's suing Travis planet. Is being a little bit unreasonable because the allegations are focused on a decision made last year around this time to expand the board to eleven seats from eight which gave Travis effectively control over you know the board because he was able to designate those additional seats there. My point of view is look at your benchmark capital you don't have a problem with that time when everything was going great you know this kind of crying over spilled milk it's like look the time to. Not go go ahead but this was last June you had a chance say no we're not to go along with that and you said yet traps your company we trusted. And while benchmark is suing him they're trying to sell the shares of soft right. I don't. Like first vote like sabotaged their own negotiating position sitting there would have been about Morgan added I'm Mike what do you guys do like who mourn your eyes. You know the company supposedly. Is worth 70000000060. Billion dollar question I. I mean they're losing. But it was when they lose one point five billion quarter. It more about it and it's in that ballpark and especially the things it takes to the thing that makes me question is we see all of these tech IPOs that have come out recently. That if cratered and the snap has cratered blue apron is great you go down the list. What was the last time he had tech IPOs that held up to its IPO. But it's been a little while at this point. Well and you look at some of the others that we talked about whether you know blue apron I wasn't excited about that one snap Chad I was excited about that one. You know those are bad examples of that they're both unfortunately. The big board of crappy companies that are going to be out of business in five years I don't know what happens here. Who were I think he's going to be around I just. And I do you question whether they're worth seventy billion just as you do. Really question. Two poli Tucker wanted to talk about this. No really had the triple laid down in Texas that had the rats falling out of the seat on man how could you forget that was it was a rats or mice like us a matter but it was it was. Yes it does matter I was it was a special. It's this death is blowing gently in LA they're they're pilot get a rat free and they're doing a little bit of a deal and they shut that location out. They did they've they've closed down temporarily paused just temporary it it it's temporary. But they're trying to assess the construction of the bill and Bill Owens a hundred years old. You can get rid of rats in a hundred year old built. You're just not now maybe you can make that two whole layer tights and they can't get in or something like that but you're not getting rid of rats a hundred year old built. Otherwise like if you know how to do that the city Boston's interest. Of tying it in about New York. It got so many rats in New York they're crawling and baby carriages to parks that I saw in this swiftly. These constant use of video of this oh yeah no I saw an article and it has a videos uploaded there is video or pictures. Mothers at a park when I having twins had having to get this the have rats out of the day because he's got twins but diaper on amassing of ago you know another reason not to with a New York ants serie a to go walk the rat. Any major city has racked. Aria is amazing in this day and age and figured out two things I don't kill snakes. And sure makes. Snakes snakes rather adventurer would rather have it was with the worst record snakes rats. Follow us snakes worse toughest part. Like snakes au Courant that that out. They have got snakes all over my new house and I have not seen or heard a single mouse. I've heights all session Tuesday we we've we've got bats to have found that out this week we've got batsman. American society is becoming decidedly. Less religious. The entire faculty at a Disco poll divinity school. Has been laid off this summer this is in Cambridge Massachusetts. And the remaining students are transferring to other senators after 150. Years track. The school is putting its campus with its nineteenth century stone chapel up for sale in closing it's the worse this is. When you look at. The problem you you talk about. Businesses. That are struggling. A EU we're talking earlier about JC Penney. The business of religion. Is really strong. There I have a good friend of mine who is a pastor down and he's talked you know and he's gone through you know having you know parish is closed down had to move in this and that. But he saying look we we can't find enough people no one's going into. The church anywhere and no one wants to go in it's you know give up the ability to earn money at this point and go about people going to church that does not on the decline that's part of the problem is it's kind of this chicken and egg problem is you don't have enough people got a little bit and terrorists are suddenly. See don't have enough people going into the field that and so. It's it's a real problem let me give you the numbers on Catholic priests for Roman Catholics. There is now one priest for every 18100. Catholics in the country that is more than twice what the ratio was in 1970. More than 3000. Catholic parishes in the country now black full time priest. It's it's a good not just what religion and no it's it was a little import across the board. I I do think there's some geographic. Aspect to this as well that is based on education. Say what it is based well the decline in religion. If you look at geographically. If he mirrors where you have highly educated population and people are to take offenses and apologize in and out just. I'm just telling you what my research would show you right. That I just people our heads are spinning right now. But if you look at a highly educated society. As they become more educated they become less religious typically that's what you see and in the northeast we have the highest educated. Society. Arguably in the world and we are also the northeast New England in particular. Tends to be much less religious and save the deep south where you have low education is Massachusetts somewhat of an out liar there though no. Do you Vermont I think is the world's most of it is no I mean in terms of masters I think has a higher percentage than the surrounding areas. In turn it may get hit a large caps are popular go to services on a regular basis and that's that's the Catholic. Aspect of masters but just in general. You look at the if you mirror. No low education areas in the country. You'll see that they have high attendance of church today your highest attendance are Arkansas Louisiana Mississippi and Alabama was the least educated state in the country and typically also as a result of being at least educated typically have very low incomes as well he talked with some of the porous states in the country as well. Like we're doing well obviously we saw you know the vick's spiked yesterday we saw an S&P down one and a quarter percent NASDAQ off you know Little Rock right around one and a half. Markets seemed to be bouncing back with a little more stability today what do you see kind of behind the scenes. They got the Dow up right now I believe like 45 points or so. I mean look it's been a rough week obviously North Korea has been in the headlines have been stay on page right now on the ballot beyond case or worst week since mid April. Absentee worst week since late march that back worst week since June 30. It is tied to North Korea potentially Ed in the Wall Street Journal. And insisting article out this morning about. How'd you know North Korean rhetoric. The market kind of Prussia ball. But yet they've got some signs pointing obviously. What's flashing on most everyone screens right now already you know. File video test launch missiles and then let the North Korean state media as saying president responding. Let me not that's been the big big story in question about how much that that happened passport. Like how hard is it for markets that have properly value the risk related. To political situations when you look at the economy it's easy to say okay we can figure out what millions of people are going to do when you're trying to get in someone's head. Seems like markets have a tough time figuring this out. Well. You talk about the North Korean leader economic picture and but they can get at night. Exactly you are trying to figure out what he's thickening is that they're going I don't know. Pray and it look the markets have obviously been tied. At least in the straight up front line. Since the election of the president how much you have to do with that you can debate that on both sides for days. But you know there there's been hope here from investors. And Washington and beyond that. You know with Health Care Reform and then come tax reform what tax reform when it comes to date. You know some some some big. Fell swoop for everybody out there who would benefit from it now right now we're kind of mired in that. Would help that Health Care Reform stalled and actor on restarting get off the ground. But is that enough why does it down 1920%. Since November 8. Yup there's been a lot of optimism but boy obviously wanted to question going forward is what happens your taxes and in the last. Last 34 months of the year here. Well I guess and even stripping away the North Korea situation that there's a case to be made just based on valuations. That this market might be ripe for correction anyways right. So that's that's you know what what what we saw yesterday with a 200 point drop in the North Korea specific. Or is it you know where were at all time highs the air in you know there's going to be get swept it. You know there's obviously part of the potentially what you're seeing today is. Buying a little bit yet with a 200 point drop yesterday and Friday it the middle of the summer. But yen and market's really haven't been moving. The volatility one way or the other you know it just kind of been. Creeping up creek and up creek and up but it does have the potential to shake up it is as one of the worst weeks that we've seen here and there's an election you'll look at you know three or five months. Which is there any other signs kind of been surrounding markets bond market options gold. That suggests that this could be part of something bigger that's yet to Palmer is nothing really flashing any warning signs right now. You know all the politics. Special satellite out for workers decently from there side I kind of I kind of focused on that I'll believe that arbitrator that help people you know provided answers to that would be talk any more talking from my hot that the quicker. So well because Florida. It's a nice thought to have what's Chris talk a little bit more about the the expectations that on tax reform I saw some pieces today suggesting that. The administration is likely to have some further details coming in September. Any idea on what we might be getting from them. So when you talk to folks here on the record officially. And I have to deal Israel and it's not the White House stolen and Republicans on Capitol Hill has probably been alleged. Is you know they want to get hit it through the committee process and how September kick it over to the senate October. Get something done. In November for congress to leave in December that that's the plan. But they were also gone I'll adamant that things would go according to plan with healthcare and I don't need to rewind for you how that happened. So when when you talk to people. As you know the more realistic timeline of this. There are some real questions as to whether or not that they twice seventeen event. Or a 2018 event and with Republicans out there are seemingly locked in with themselves. Whether or not has been that at all. We know the other two items that are on the docket right now are trying to figure out an increase to the debt ceiling as well as get a budget in place for the next year. Is there anything else out there and we've heard some talk about infrastructure anything else that's kinda making the rounds there's a pretty quiet on other fronts. Well let me be ugly stopped as somebody described it to me. The other day is gonna be the debt ceiling and the budget they have to get that done right the US. Is it not gonna default on the audit people basic credit. And so we've always been told and then in order to get tax reform done keep in mind they're going through this reconciliation process. Just did that the bare bones level of this that the saved it did so that they don't have to go 51 votes in the senate which they tried to you on health care. And didn't get Don but it alerted to kick back process salt. They need to pass a budget. Double or even talk about tax reform yup Peter need to get a full scale or at least some sort of getting down down budget. But so so really before he even get any of the big stuff what else with with tax reform. You gotta get the debt ceiling done this guy get a budget done and those are must use. Before even density other political style of of taxes health care and probably keep talking about infrastructure if you have comment on Mitch McConnell yesterday. You want to get infrastructure done I think it is something that Republicans and Democrats can both rally behind. But that is so far down a list I mean out of like talking about. You know the seventh inning of a baseball game in his sixth inning when year you know. Good going around batting order for the first time in the top of the second. So pretty much you tell me that we have to eat our dinner before we get dessert. Date exactly there there's a lot of broccoli. That a lot of greens they're so I canceled. Or you get the ice cream matters that are most likely infrastructure. Outstanding Blake appreciate the time today. A competitive product to Netflix. And you were quick to point out chalk that one of the major things that attracts people to Netflix. Or some of the Disney products like Star Wars and marvell and and some of the other Disney offerings. How how does it shake out in the net now we're getting word that Netflix is. I would call it desperate that they there. Netbooks will be fine either way you think so yeah those those will be fighters there's enough content on there. And they're producing so much content now now that you know people I don't think this content at some point become universal and free. Bill. I like music something you know music's not free. What music's free. Music preferred party get we pay a membership. Yeah Amazon for a yeah okay so it's included in Miami is Greg yeah 99 dollars wonder how long people are going to be will be a 891011. Ports on from time to time that's really all I watch them and have it on in the background while reading something GAAP and it was supported watching after runs that publicity into it half heartedly at it noise to distract me from my life but a lot of documentaries it's almost like a book on tape is. Sure so get your double reading essentially right. I've got I've got solo Teddy Roosevelt did that tube I've a lot of empty space appeared and and I try to they'll expect with as much stuff. The as I as I possibly can. That out I just I don't know I signed to a book on tape and watching video or no you don't a lot of times they'll also. There. Hillary go with that it's my point is. Amazon has a lot of really good documentary they do. It's true that they've got a good platform I think the there's definitely. The Amazon has become much more competitive and that's based in the last 23 years as you go back I remember like in between thirteen and four I mean nothing they had no it would they'd have like one movie that you wanted to senior like. Okay what what's the rest this like the rest of it's like literally watching paint dry and it just didn't make sense Netflix. Is gonna be okay. They do have it where where I see them potentially running into some problems. Is it the cost of making their own content goes up because if other people get into that business you talk about supply and demand right now you've got a ton of writers directors never one who wants and that they won't work they are there are all working well they are but it still relatively affordable for Netflix to make their own content ball was an apple starts doing a whole lot and Amazon doesn't in you get other companies that are ramping up content. The demands. Started you know it starts Cadillac gold in the supply hasn't necessarily increased. What is gene editing in housing gonna make me live longer something about putting pig's ear in my right. The he did you have seen the episode assigned felled. That you're buying the bond in the municipal board the other might be a revenue bonds like India Ireland TF green airport under Logan Airport. And interest paid on those balances directly. Paid by the operations of that airport one whatever the endeavour's. Anyway we're making his guide available. It talks about. The benefits associated with the municipal bond ownership what are the big benefits of course is the fact the ought to pay taxes on the interest earned on municipal bonds. And what are the risks associated with meanest ones we've seen municipal bonds pay we've seen municipalities not pay the interest plea of need to be aware. I hesitate to talk about this but there's a loophole track. It lets certain individuals. Withdraw money from their ire ire of their 401K plan excuse me. Prior to age 59 half without having to pay a penalty. Yeah and pretty much this is something that would be kind of you know break glass in event of emergency you don't wanna do it otherwise and there are some pretty narrow guidelines is to win you'd be able to do this effectively. It's something called the rule 55. Ins for employees who have been separated from their service during or after the year in which they turn age 55 so. If you are 54 years old you're fired you can't do this but if you're 56 and your laid off. It's something that you are able to do and what you can do then. Is you're able to withdraw money from that plan with out any penalty but it has to be from that specific plan they cannot be from. And IRA can't be from an old employer plan in asked beef from the employer that terminated you. After age 55 and so. It is something that if you are laid off in your late fifties it gives you some options so that you're not you know kind of what we're without any heading into age 59 and a half. And so it just gives you the ability to make withdrawal without a penalties don't pay taxes on the withdrawn Casey can't avoid all taxes. But it just gives you some options but it's not something that you want to be do. On I have found my next career gentlemen. Your patience is that the schools are paying people. I know a lot of kids who pretend to be sick all the time yeah nabbed in what they don't get paid well this what. This is what you should do actually if you're pretending to be sick to stay home from school now to save mom what's what's make a little extra money you know had done a hospital Albee is the standard patient with standardized patient. Poll Monica joins us now here talk about snapped chat a a day after there second ever public earnings report Paul thank you for joining us. Are much. Paul snaps off about eleven and a half percent today stock down to 1218 well below its all time trading high of 2944. I'm curious just your thoughts there's there's two different piece here let's talk first just about the company not the stock price what do you make a snap Chad is a company at this point. I eight. I really question. What the company has going for it that makes it. It compelling. Investment that you really need to have one as we've seen. If not all that difficult for FaceBook and mr. Graham to copy things to capture that does and I am wind up with even more user. How much of snapshots problems are related to their inability to work with Wall Street. And provide things like guidance and taped input as to where they should be moving their business. Yeah I I think today it's a big problem is that that the company is trying to be upbeat. A renegade. But doesn't. Have a I'm not all of the it doesn't have a good leadership where they can get away with it you can make comparisons to Google you know alphabet. When Google went public and they had some quirky things you don't beat people we're not gonna give guidance. But at the same time even though you had. Founders running the show we had. Larry Page and Sergey brand Eric Schmidt what they respected. Tech executive that was daycare as a kind of quotable quote. BT senator to make sure that Larry and Sergey weren't going to do things that you lead need Wall Street noticed. I don't see anyone at snack shack. Has that whole decade kind of pre Evan Spiegel what you think about FaceBook as well. Mark Zuckerberg obviously with Sheryl Sandburg there as well plus the fact that Zuckerberg is clearly am mature adult. Now as well. You don't have that worry with companies like FaceBook or Google but they're going to do something. That's gonna scare Wall Street in the same way that it takes action to almost 2%. It's really a company that went public weak eastern. You mentioned that they don't seem to really have any product that is dependable at the moment that they don't have something that someone can't do. Are they working on anything that could possibly give them a project or product with a little bit wider Mo. I mean it's possible I mean I think when you look at what's going on now what they've done with you know the spectacle is that something that. Time it sets them apart but it. I just struggled supply and do what it is that soon UT about abject object has. The media partnerships including one with CNN that you know based broadcast media partnerships without you know mania at the institutions. As well. I just am not. May be at my age I'm in my mid forties not that it went if I'm not seeing what it is about snap jab at ought to have. Not just for users because user group the spot but for advertisers that makes them a compelling. Companies that he'll Parker needs to be on and that bastard needs. Are snapped check users on FaceBook as well or they exclusively. Using snapped at do we know. I haven't seen any specific deed. Now that purse today but me just think about. You know anecdotally how anyone or at least anyone I know uses social media I have not but we're too many people back. Are you know looking at social media platforms like sports team to not you know. I will never over to correct stocks because yankees fans so I'm never over four time champion based book. I think most people have baseball history which is easily worth Jack and Twitter I think there is probably. Z. Proliferation people have many different. You social networks that they are subscribers chip and obviously many more subscribers to. And users ought FaceBook on properties and snatch scene today. And I guess the big question is their only so many hours of the day at your eyes to be on a screen which app Regan be looking at the most.
