This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're so leave your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. Well the mystery is going to be salt. This week and a person speaking of the mystery as it relates to the repeal of obamacare hi everybody it's very and truck with you here on a Monday. And chuck you know you think about the election and how hotly contested it was and with the primary motivation for a lot of voters was and I had to do with obamacare many people including myself. Feel that it was unfairly drafted in. Frankly we viewed it as an unmitigated. Disaster well now we're gonna find out with the Republicans have in store force and I'm very curious to see with the results are. I think Republicans are a little cares what the results are as well this point is bill has been kinda shrouded in secrecy over the last stock couple of weeks others the event on I think was Friday. Where Rand Paul is trying to get in to see it and you know ever any couldn't get in to see the bill so. I think it what what we're hearing based out of the the draft that have been leaked in the piece that have been leaked to this point. Is that it is going to move away. From both the individual and employer mandate supposedly. As well as place a greater emphasis on health savings accounts as well as variable tax credits based on age and income that's what it appears to be doing right now. You know the devil's always gonna be in the details on something like this because you don't know how big those credits are going to be what kind of tax breaks you get things like that. But that appears to be what is being bandied about as we get closer to the unveiling of this bill. Let's talk about the mandate if they. Do away with the individual mandate that's going to preclude a lot of young people from being forced to buy that they may back away from the market but. Even a lot of young people's understanding chucked at the weren't buying it anyway even with the tax penalty they just who are paid 700 dollars or pay the 300 dollars. There there wasn't a lot of participation. In the Affordable Care Act among 2030 girls lesser. No but the reason for it was because of how they priced insurance by narrowing the age bands and effectively making a maximum three to one ratio for what the highest age ban could pay. Relative to the lowest typically most states have historically used a five to one banding. And what that means is under the 321 band. Someone who is 65. Can only pay at most three times what someone who's 25 pennies okay. But it bit aside from the military there that's the problem. That's the problem but look look at this let's say that insurance for a 25 year old is supposed to cost thousand dollars in all and it ends up costing 18100 dollars which is what the math says why am I gonna pay twice as much for insurance just to subsidize some guy. Who's forty years older than me while Marty subsidizing the Medicare and Social Security. They I just wonder if they'll buy it anyway. They even if it was properly priced at a thousand dollars do you think your peer group and Tucker do you think your peer group. Would rush out and buy it. Just because it's you know a little less expensive if it were half the cost. Yes you think you're right I just curious because I'm just trying to think back to when I was in my twenties. And I was working as a bartender the united I didn't have insurance and I didn't and I used didn't worry about it. Meat may be maybe your generation is different than my Jerry. I just I look at it and say look you you kind of broke the system to begin with by pricing it that way it's you know. You know wasn't really given a chance disparate because of how was priced in the problem. Is that it was another generational wealth transfer. From Milan deals to baby boomers you know people always talk about how big Mo ideals are at the RB you know entitled and other selfishness in that. And the Affordable Care Act was a huge handout from colonials to boomers. Would Ted talk to us about the the tax credits because that tax credits are also based on your age but yet and if if you're. In your twenties here again what couple thousand bucks tax credit this is us supposedly what you're looking at would be if you are under thirty you'd be eligible for up to a 2000 dollar tax credit. Someone over sixty would be eligible for a 4000 dollar tax credit here. On so those would potentially come in to offset some of the cost. Of insurance hear the question that I have is if you get rid of the individual mandate just about every study has shown that if you do that. The thing collapses under its own weight pretty much like kind of wonder. If this is just shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic here. So the that tax credits we understand and by the way folks what we are sharing with you is information that we've gleaned. From various media sources the Republican Party has not issued playing we don't have. The Paul Ryan plan that we can put in front of you were just speculating. And we works that we we've been told that we're gonna see the actual plan sometime this week. And and I think frankly the markets are waiting to see it. Well I think. Oh and I mean look we were you know closing in on somewhere what are we about fifty days into the presidency right now somewhere in that ballpark and generally would talk about what you wanna kept you want to get a bill. To the fore in that first hundred days you don't necessarily have to have it dawned because we know that health care is a complicated enough issue that there's no way it gets Dolan. In a hundred days and frankly it does get done a hundred days it is and nearly detailed enough to be able to address all of the issues out there. But obviously you want to have legislation at least moving forward so you can start to beating on it. I still think it's a longer process to get this done. But look if if they can turn around to bill. Relatively quickly I'll be pretty impressed but you have to see what's inside of here via in order to make a judgment on it that the pieces that you've had coming out thus far. It it's not a huge surprise it's kind of what we heard over the last couple years in terms of the the types of discussions. But I'd I do think that as I said right off the top doubles gonna be in the details what. How does the rubber meets the road for individual families. And really weighing those relative. Costs while one seed just because I know you can't do tax reform without this Italy a lot of us are looking at is they just get this thing done to skip the Affordable Care Act. Everybody's known it's been a bad deal for six years right so the Republicans should've had a package ready to go OK so let's see your solution. The problem is you know if you're gonna insurer and ensure Apple's rank the it's it's gonna cost you money. Well indeed if you're gonna ensure sick people Yi a healthy people are gonna pay for. Yep and it. And that's the big thing is when you look at the single biggest change. As far as why the cost of coverage went up if you cover people who previously insured and didn't want to touch. You know that you don't think that that's what it was. I understand but the thing is a lot of that maintenance work is already been done you know like a lot of people put off. With their. I wonder if we. You know. If maybe some of those expenses the worst of them are already behind this is a problem that we have is the Tea Party. Element of the in the conservative ailment of the Republican Party. They don't sound very enthusiastic. About the the the plan that he if you talk to Rand Paul who's. You know he's got a following within the Republican Party Rand Paul's not crazy about what he's hearing about the Republicans plan. One and you have a number of members of the house freedom caucus come out last week as well. And pretty much they came out and said look we don't want any of these tax credits to be in the replacement just because it represents a new entitlement program that's being created so the problem is if you don't have tax credits in this replacement the way that it sounds like they're talking about. It's kinda dead on arrival is all of a sudden yeah you could in theory provide coverage for people put it three and four times the cost of what they're paying today they're just gonna say. No no no way and move on she just basically going back to what we had ten years ago. Yeah and and the problem is without the tax exactly so if if if you look at that it's like OK so what did you actually do. You know it is it the cost that are already in the system those are going back to our own. You know you're not reducing cost of late it's it's not all of a sudden is azalea everything to be like if it doesn't work like that. That's that's that's that's not really how the whole system's built. We have a poll question today and that poll question is do you think Republicans will be successful in repealing obamacare. Now our tech's number 68680 but we would ask that you go to our website financial exchange show in order to participate in this poll. Do you think Republicans will be successful in repealing obamacare. Again the web site address is financial exchange showed dot com I just ask you chuck do you think Republicans will be successful in repealing it this year. During the my head PO I say you're ahead I say yes. And what does it look like what we're just talking about. They don't like yes I'm gonna that was amid a punt on that one I'll say they get something done I have no idea what it looks like just because you haven't. They get their divisions inside the Republican Party on what this is going to look like. And in this reminiscent of when you saw the Affordable Care Act coming in the first in the first place you know President Obama at the time. Had both a senate as well as house that was under democratic control it still was not easy to get something done it's it's hoped to deal with your own party sometime. Things break. The Dow is down 47 points as we speak and as you know it hit 21000. Last week at 300 point day which is a big day by any standard. Up next we will be joined by Adam Shapiro from the Fox Business Network. Will be talking about whether stocks are overvalued and I think that that's a question cash eat. We're joined now by our good friend Adam Shapiro from the fox this network pay you and Adam. I'm good very good on this Monday. Locate by the way congratulations I understand that Fox Business has now overtaken CNBC in terms of viewership. That is correct them both and how old Indian demographic so and detail that English. We can charge more for our advertising. Leno index. That's right and he has worked hard for Clinton had with problems that network and on that we. I'm Don I was part of it response and we signed on October 2007. Again congratulations they wanted to talk about the market IA yeah I do a lot of the hedge fund guys have been wrong. A lot of big investors have been wrong. The market is up I was just looking at some stats that's up 20% the recipe in rent in this in the last twelve months 6% since New Year's Day. In the S&P is up 250%. Since the start of the bull market in 2009. Does this all bold long in the tooth. It depends who you ask that people think there's we were talking analyst oh week two weeks ago here but does that work were talking. Down 23000. Oh by the end of the year and they were people as we started the year were saying you know will finish at 215. By the end of this year. So the answers that simply would be no not yet beak as. Investors are Wall Street. Banking tremendously on tax reform statement agent secretary of the treasury and on our business last week. We are pushing aggressively to have that finished by now on we gonna get back of the news that. About hedge fund. You don't intimate with a warm bucket. And warm but it's gonna tell most people why are you playing individuals stock going to an index. As you've got a 401 came just one case at an index on about it. And he proved this point he is a famous bit that ended in 2007 against management. And it was dom for one million dollars and that loser donate them in the trip to a charity. Warren Buffett the S&P 500 and an index fund outperformed. Hedged on 56%. Though they hedge what is going to lose the bet that would be anchored in million dollars but this across the board that happens all the time most hedge fund whose. Yeah if they do and what you eat it yourself in trouble I think when you try to time this. You know you. Beat the consensus was the market was gonna crash if trump was victorious in just the opposite has occurred. Yet tightly Google Paul Krug man around the New York Times and the like he wrote the day after he wrote it at 1 AM actually. That November not in. About out into the rule was here and actually that there's no way. And we will recover from this is wrong. To get expert get him to his right when he am. You know what they had at that point that is just he was great and we do that Tony Robbins on morning with the Ria. Today. And he pointed out it was the study that showed that even a few times a marketing correctly what went into an index on. If you bought into that index on and I'll he would is that vanguard index 500 there's the ability sparked 500. If you went in that index which mimics its teapot that you went into the top of the market that. And it was the collapse of the crash. Depending when he died in which you held over twenty years. The difference between those two went in the top and those who bought in at the bottom. But about 141000 dollars that it. Not a huge amount of money you know talking about a twenty year investment to don't be afraid. I'm going in at the top just remembered that yet to have a long terms strategy here to go to the top and pull out six months later. Beat them. Well you raise a good point because. An old friend of mine a mentor told me Barry it's not. About timing the market it's about time in. The market and you have to be willing to Lotta people if you remember back you know you know I worked together back in 20082009. And the wheels were coming off right and people were nervous or even as recently as 2011 yet people someone out of their stocks. My ass that real world example all of this is twenty years ago obviously passionate I think in 1998. I elected job that it was one of my very first job and I've had a small or a one at the time. Ask my brother who is a Wharton grad Stanford MBA. That's my Big Brother said what to do with this heat that don't do any thing other than roll it into any suggested. And it expired under and I did. That was 1998 haven't touched that money except I converted it to a Roth IRA. What key years later and haven't touched that. In 1998 it's been in that index on and that amount of money that I rolled over 1998. Went out. Very well and then it crashed and everyone else and investment about the about the may 2009. And today you know. The mountain marathon is a little bit greater it's it's multiplied. Almost wartime from the original. And that's the ups and downs of but you're 88 crashed in the early 2000. It went down in 2007 and yet today. It's about four times with the original ballots. What do you what it would. It it's about staying in what what are your concerns are one of the things it seems to be running up the market would be tax cuts. And Affordable Care Act repealed correct it does not seen. At least from what I've been in the region and you know I watched you guys right now in reap what you guys print. Doesn't sound like the Republicans are on the same page in terms. Of for affordable care if that doesn't get done for streak into minutia and doesn't get his tax cuts until the Affordable Care Act repealed. That is correct and we're gonna get the Affordable Care Act. Repeal and replace plan from the Republicans this week supposedly. But you have Republicans like that all bank to get rid of the higher on the road all. And Republican leadership has not willing to do that. So the people to pay attention to and all that about these people. But also pay attention to Kevin Brady is the chairman of the house Ways and Means Committee. And he's a big push on tax reform but he's gonna have to think that say about obamacare repeal and replace. And they can do that and it looks like they're going to do that motivate you as we heard from mr. miniature and by August for tax reform and the big fight there is going to be the border adjustment authority act Eugenia adds yet again. The border judgment tax of the lobbyist for The National Retail Federation are already in play so both sides are gearing up expect the site. Before. Well I just think about if you're a congressman or senator. From Arkansas. Texas Iowa any of those southern midwestern states how the vote it's. Hey how can you vote for the border attacks UUP booted out of office you get primary. Yeah no it's gonna be appealing to think because the arguments for an against the border just attacked very simply it's attacks on imports to Wal-Mart the teacher costs featured meal like. Are gonna go up and in price now the argument for the B eight B the border just attacked it yet the price will go up but nobody give a tax cut. Wal-Mart and it's going to be stones significant that they'll be able to drop the overall prize. And absorb the tax increase on the import therefore it'll be awash in the law passed on to consumers. Want a bad. And that's the that's the million dollar question Adam thank you very much for your time we sure appreciate. The mean theme song and again the text number is 68680. You know truck I kind of expected GM shares to be up today animal can atom there down what 83 cents at 3740. I thought this news about the sale. There. Unit in Europe would be good news for the market and the stock. Yeah I would GM is doing is they are going to be selling off their European unit which is largely. Made up of the Opel brand. As well as I never even heard this one is is that the vowel hall or the box all but how do you think you pronounce that fox hall box all. So they can be selling off both of these brands to Peugeot. And pretty much they're taking a four billion dollar write down. On the sale just in order to get off their books here it's the it's a division that really has never been able. To fulfill the promise that GMs on it always has been a challenge for them to operate over in Europe and so. From my perspective it's good for the long term health of the company. But I think there are gonna be some costs associated with this as they look to spin it off fear and obviously it is going to significantly reduce their footprint over in Europe. But keep in mind Europe is not as reliant on the automobile. As the US is nor are they seeing the same kind. Of growth that China and other emerging markets are so I think it's a Smart move for GM in the long run but it definitely has some cost associated with it in the short term. Yet the one thing that I used to. That stuck out. At me when I was reading the report on it truck was the unfunded pension liabilities are gonna cost them ten billion dollars yeah it's so. You know you think about. You know the the price of getting out of this relief you're talking effectively. The it's it all has to do with the pensions and I think they're getting out of like Mary are made the decision to get out of there are saying. It's just to get socialism if you're trying to do business in the socialist country. If it's really hard and I think she just said weakly because of socialism. We can't make money in Europe that she never came right out and said that that's my interpretation. But I just think that was the driving of motivation for her to get out. What I think also you know a big thing is that they've never been able to penetrate the way they've wanted to into Europe it's simply. You know you look at the market share that they have by continent okay. And the latest numbers that I'm looking at here these are from mock Q4. Of 25 team now okay in the US there about 17%. Yeah in China they're about 14% in South America there about 18%. In Europe. They were eight and a half back in 2012 and they've steadily declined so they've been losing market share in Europe. They just have not figured out a way to make cars that Europeans liking a particular. When you look at continental Europe that's where the issues have been in the UK there market share was about 12% but on the continent it's only about seven so they've just never figured out. How did you with the European market effectively and I think they're just gonna say look. It's we've forged so much money into here at this point it's sunk cost let's move on. The profits to your point big profits coming up China and South America. Could be a rough year purse your makers you know if you were Paul. Back in February we had today remember this like yesterday I was driving up 122 office and bird. I think might hurt thermostat in the car 74 degrees last week I was 73. And there was fourteen over the weekend all it was cold but a Foley but wrap it be the day here's the problem. When you had those really warm days in the seventies. The trees start to but he can see the it's like there's swelling operate branches are yelling up. And once that starts. It affects this year they expect that in two ways when you don't get as much but it's the east and is it. Yeah apparently it's not his last week I guess when the temperature is warmer and so. Four big Serb producers actually concerned that they're not going to be able to get as much high quality sap to turn in the Serb this year and so. It's it's a major concern more than in terms of being able to run their business isn't and maintain their livelihoods. But also you look at it from the perspective of consumer you might see some higher cost on that maple syrup. Well nice to see that the state of Maine had a record setting year for lobster production. Big gear for Maine lobster is the total value of the lobsters sold in 2016. Was a little bit more than 500 in 33 million that's a growth of thirty million over the prior year's record total. So about 6% in terms of the value there. And pretty much what you've seen. Is that the volume has been a main reason major reason for that obviously the cost of lobster went up a little bit. But Maine lobster man caught nearly a 131. Million pounds of lobster last year. Compared to a 120 million which was the record set back in 2013. So more lobsters higher prices for them. Be good time to be made often lost. Well I guess they're they're not selling his much in Europe because of the economy but they're making it up with sales to China and India. Yeah I mean you continue to see high demand Ford and they've done a couple things. In the last decade or so. Just try to manage the lobster numbers a bit better and prevent overfishing there. And what they've seen is that they've had a an uptick in the populations and so it's a much more sustainable population right now that it was previously assisting seem to be going well on that side. And I don't know about you but I'm getting pretty geared up for lobster season again it's it's one of my favorite things about the summer. The enemy to you usually have our first clam bake Memorial Day weekend at the the thing that that. You look at it is if you look at that catch coming out of Rhode Island Connecticut and masks to weigh down. The wonder why that is. We have any info on it. The the there's two theories I talked to Sean O'Connell this morning and she said it's because of regulation. And then the other theory is that the water is warmer. And the cell in the lobsters are migrating north I don't know we I'm not a fisherman so I don't know what the truth is. But it you know you you've got different theories as to why. The catch is so much lessened in any disease you get especially south Cape Cod right in in the Long Island Sound patches are way off those areas I find the. It's it's it's a good picture now. And it could happen that happened the I'm looking at the downward down 85 points at 2000920. Would we be seeing for copper prices today can you pull up the court. Quota rate prices because that strike we reported on a strike if you're coal BHP. Billiton. Has a huge copper mine. In Escondido and Escondido news part of Chile and yes. That strike is still going on and it's just about you read it. The big question is whether they've companies can be of the break the strike today. You have got take a look at copper prices down one point 6% today to 265. We've gotten as high as 284 a few weeks ago. Back in earlier rather mid February. So we're we're down off those ties but we're still significantly above where we worked for much of 201612016. Generally the prices were anywhere on the low went back in January reaction got below two down to about 197. And on the high end we're typically topping out around 220 year to thirty so you're still about 20% above. The average for last year. Whether trying to solve that strike as EU where you have problems with copper production are Escondido. You've got problems in Peru with the transportation to comfort to perceive still mining it but they can't get to where they need to go. And then in the Philippines wheat we. Addressed at a problem their last week where they're having problems with labor in the Philippines so. If you if you continue to get these labor and corporate problems and did interrupt supply one would think that the prices going up the fact that it's down. Would indicate that perhaps they think they're going to be of the bus strike. Yeah I mean you could also wished it were only down 1% their says something like that could just be I haven't seen if there's any data that's come out about copper today or anything like that so I don't know if we've gotten any data you know that would play into that as well but. Certainly suggests that it it it doesn't suggest things are going to get worse. In the near future please. Up next we'll have the answer or trivia question along with an interview will be joined by Jason kept park. Jason kept part of Morningstar joins us now to talk about his mutual funds election for our mutual fund Monday. Jason thank you very much for joining us today. I. Jason on the we're talking about here at the vanguard US value fund investor shares ticker on it is the UV. L acts can you talk a little bit about what this fund does and why its interest in deal. Yet to this day. Large cap value fund that's run by Vanguard's quantitative team. And they are using. And quantitative factors to basically. You a text stocks in the index. Which is the Russell 3000. And all overweight or underweight and stocked by a small amount. So they're making a lot of little bet and hoping that adds up overtimes you don't really have you know a big risk via any single stop driving performance. Under the limits most impress those buddy just below cost. At 23 basis points. It's you know about the cheapest active management you can get and that presents a really low hurdle upper management to provide value and so far they've been able to do that and the action on the may able to do you update their quantitative screens overtime and improve them. Looking at a fund like this how does it perform historically. Compared to something like an S&P 500 fund. Yesterday I mean it citizens value funds soon value is out of favor you're expected to underperformed the FP 500. And vice Versa. You know over the long long volume and value growth tilts it kind of balance that. He had indeed expected to do. It would do well when values doing well and do a little bit worse in the S&P UN kind of growth your stocks like the FaceBook so the world are leading the market. What's the benefit benefit of having that value tilt does it tend to be a little bit more stable. In downturns are dollars that not the case with this fund. Yes eight you know value on the in general tends to be a little bit more stable that kind of you know your high growth stocks digress stocks tend to rise rise faster and all harder. You get a little bit more smoother ride with value you might have to wait a little bit longer for value to pay off that. As. You know as yeah as investors kind of you re price now these stocks to see him get the prices are rising. And this fund buys exclusively US companies rector is there any is there and it international here. Now and found that none and no international luck choosing to not only from within the Russell 3000 index which is a US totally. Very good you said the cost is below quarter percent rated stock twenty basis points appellate. Pretty it's it's on par with the most each yes you know it's very comparable in in terms of cost so you're getting. You know active management per passive prices I think that's a great deal. Where do you see this fitting in someone's portfolios is just the core holding. At this point. Yet it can be occur a core part of any equity portfolio. You probably you know you try wanna bounce that would Beatty Annette and 500 fund or groups until that you're not completely missing out when. You know the entire growth stocks are doing well but I think it's definitely hand it has a long term place in the portfolio. Any other piece of information that you will you'd like to give our listeners. Now that. All right very good Jason thank you for joining us tonight great pretty much. All lobsters are not good climbers they're scared the wall heading north. 171. To Maine lobster association stopped harvesting females only harvest males. And that's why they crop of harvest and I mean and they started that is our culture I think we reported that today I remember that. Gosh it had to be about ten years ago when I mean really cracked down and I know there's a lot of griping when they did but boy it's paying off in between. Yeah I wanna say it's somewhere in in that ballpark there it's back then there was actually a story back in December. Of a couple Maine lobster man who lost licenses after removing eggs from female lobsters. And trying to make them look like males is that actually happened. Not in December so. Obviously there do some things to crack down there but. It's been good for the allotment of their bigger populations more options to catch. Ancient we're talking about interest rates we are of the opinion that interest rates are going to rise two or three times during calendar year 27 team the big question is chuck why is the Federal Reserve increasing the federal funds rate now. Yet the big reason why the Fed bumps up that federal funds rate. Is because they feel that the economy is on pretty stable footing and they simply want to make sure that inflation. Doesn't get out of control if there's too much money floating around in the economy so what they do is they raise that federal funds rate and it has two effects one it makes borrowing a little bit more expensive. It also raises the amount the people were able to get on things like CDs and savings accounts helping them to keep money in the bank instead of spending. So would we talked about how housing. Is hot in prices are rising in young people millennial sickening priced out of the housing market people can't afford to buy a house to house because prices are rising too fast with the Fed take that into consideration when they're looking at raising interest rates they would housing does factor and all their inflation metrics that they look at and so is definitely something that factors in. And what you see there is that as rates and a rising mortgage rates go up to makes a little bit more challenging to buy a home focus of the rising mortgage rates would actually depress housing prices good to know. No I was quite sure we use open this hour of the show we had a story. About Deutsche Bank it was so sure of that fact at the stock pulled off the maturity talk about it with chocolate then. Moments ago. I got a text message from one of our listeners are name is Suzanne and she said hey very big layoffs coming ESPN. And you know what ESPN has rittner it was worship a lot of folks from Hartford area 1410 WP OP listening to the show and this gonna affect some of their families what what is the story coming out of ESPN truck. Yet this is a us story first reported by Richard Deutsch of Bob Sports Illustrated. And pretty much what we are seeing here. Is that this is going to be a pretty significant set of layoffs that isn't just go into effect. Behind the scenes personnel. But also on camera an on air personalities. And so there are number of people that apparently are going to be. Moving out of some pretty recognizable positions it in prison in particular. What you are seeing here is a massive reshuffling of what's gonna happen with their NFL coverage apparently. And so you are going to see some new people into new places. But hadn't they already done that truck I like I remember was it called Albert in immunity they had an all star line up that they just a frittered that away during the last three years. Thirty done it's somewhat apparently this round is going to be even more significant is is what we're hearing at this Steven Smith got to go. Probably not I doubt it probably not hate. You know Stephen A Smith and skip Bayless brand probably the worst. Sports show in history but it gets good ratings so there you know. Skip moved on them what what is new thing with which Shannon Sharpe would something that nobody's watching it on fox sports network there but yes Stephen a continues to. Just yell and who was the abyss. So let's all what's the problem free espionage is cord cutters you can see we get those numbers are recorder from Disney. And they haven't stopped the flow like in every quarter movies it's like. He wrote there there paid. Viewership I I I think core cutting continues to be the biggest issue that they're having in the problem with that is. When you look at how advertising rates work it's an exponential curve if you have two million viewers on a show. You don't charge double what a million now what a million viewers showed as you can charge two and a half to three times what they do because all those people were concentrated in one place and it's easy way for advertisers. To reach dedicated audience when you start to slip. You know it's it it's slipped pretty quickly and I'll tell ya I've been saying this for awhile. The next round of TV deals from major sports leagues yeah. It might not be the first round that's tone from the previous ones in terms of annual value. But you will likely be one where there are not significant increases in war on the verge I think. Of seeing that her role over at some point in all of a sudden. All those owners who are counting on all that TV revenue to keep growing to keep by allowing them to to make more money. They're gonna have to find other alternatives because I think we're getting to the point where that cycle is finally coming to an end. Well and we know from the NFL that they pay out about half of that salaries since it only makes sense then. That you're gonna see I would think baseball hockey. Basketball. And NFL salaries. Are either go to and peak or they're gonna come down quite yet like NFL were they down for the years 6% last year baseball ratings wise you mean. You know and yeah baseball never we've looked at the World Series ratings have been. Half the number of people watched World Series games for compared to thirty years ago the population's a lot thicker. Well yeah but keep in mind that with baseball. It's not as dependent on TV revenue as the NFL the NFL. Is heavily dependent on TTV revenue probably sixty to 70% comes from that national TV deal. With baseball because it's not so much a national sport the national TV deal. There's a lot more that comes from gate revenue just because they have a 162 games and also from local sports networks that are negotiated separately so the NFL I think. Is the the one that has the biggest. Potential threat out there because it's so concentrated in those national TV deals. And the other thing to remember they'd the most rapid growth you know if you go back 2030 years ago NFL was not the biggest sport. It in the country it it is today. But as we've seen yet you can kinda wax and wane its people assume that something's gonna last forever but remember thirty years ago baseball was the big ticket. Okay ten years ago NASCAR was the next hot thing we covered last week are only seeing about half the viewership they did ten years ago so. The NFL might have gotten a little bit greedy might have overstretched themselves and Mark Cuban might be right about this they may be facing a reckoning here. Maybe hey let's take a look at Deutsche Bank this broke last night I was doing some show prep. For a went to bed and I saw that they are looking to raise the next half billion dollars now. It seems to me like the European banks are going through a lot of problems that the American banks went through 45 years ago. Yet that there is they're kind of going through that process right now and Deutsche Bank on this news is off about 4%. As they try to tap markets. To maintain some additional liquidity here and this is a company that over the last couple years has gone through a hole and of cost cutting already so this really is. A last not last ditch but this is kind of the the last resort to try to keep things moving the way they want and what they're doing here. Is they're going to be issuing more shares deluding their current investors in order to raise this capital. And they've already gone through and done everything else they've cut costs they've gotten rid of bonus is they've got routed dividends I mean they've. They've done everything they can. But the problem is they're just continuing. To season struggles right now. And they're gonna expect about two billion restructuring cost in connection with this plan here. In they are rate now they're only down 4% felt we are you surprised that. They are down more than that last night one night when I looked at them and almost been 930 or so I think they were down there and down more than 3%. Yeah I mean I haven't done enough research to see where I value them I mean I think. It seems a little light at first glance but I've been done enough digging to see whether this makes cents or not and obviously what the the volumes hide Damien dirty trading. Almost ten million shares in normal full day they trade six of the volume today is going to be pretty much triple what they normally do. So with its its high conviction trading gets in this range so I tend to trust the market on that. But obviously. I've I've been done enough digging myself. He Tucker UA Hugh Jackman fan you know that Wolverine. Yeah I mean I'm thriller at the actors are good actor I'm just not really. In the loop with the X-Men sang well. Disease patted it to a broad tomatoes etiquette weekend that look you know you the or worse yet overseas. Is the new movie low. In Britain are raided. Got a weird. 152 million overseas. And would do weigh 85 million down US and Canada. I mean that's significant for any rated. 93%. On rotten tomatoes dot com which is very very good movie. Com is the translation translation for that percentage. So I am I after rod see this point it's it's getting rave reviews. Chuck are thinking about doing a weekly movies segment you know what you were doing in the week. Oh I'd I'd love the weekly movie segment. Yeah do one day at I think we should dues one movies for. My generation one week. Then we can do movie for the ideals. And then we can do a movie that you would reach you know take your grandchildren to what would you call movie for your generation I just wanna make sure. We're kind of in the right head space suns. Casablanca. Don't know what the wind. Now they can Clint Eastwood movie you know that's that's what. And so we're talking something from late sixty's and seventy's well known and an eminently a movie that he produces so it'll him. As though the one on the Hudson what is the stellar. So that was Clint Eastwood movie that that that is what my generation would appreciate you guys were not even invite like if you went by taking cumulative so. Why didn't go to younger generation would probably like something like this Wolverine Logan order of ties soured on the comic book movies. You are the they're they're kind of formulaic at this point. You're growing up. And if I go that far. You know big talker here do you remember watching the TV show weeds years ago I have not seen that but I heard good things about it. We value each region was phenomenal. With the Internet television show they talked about the cope in Haiti and we'll I don't know if you remember this yeah. But that is actually being developed and produced out of MIT. In in the next segment we're going to be joined by house of Biederman. He's the CEO of super pedestrians. It's our daily poll question that financial exchange showed dot com. Vote your conscience. There aren't just vote go to financial exchange oh does come into castaway. I love talking to pucks from viewers here at the financial exchange and today we're joined by. Asa Biederman he's the CEO of super pedestrian which. I think came out of an MIT lab called then is it sensible and I ate it and welcome to the show us. Hello Walter and currently meet us for yeah. Yeah I'm here to your vehicle. Yes in this weekend so easy to. Yep we can hear you can you hear us OK assets are your your wonderful loud and clear. A stuff I guess looking at your your project overall can you describe what it is. To our listeners who might not be familiar with that. Absolutely. So we build. Vehicles were personal transportation expert but we did it make no little robot. Go any bite there in the rear wheel. And it it about five minute problem anyone thought that. Once you put it on is indicate he would your article there mostly new things you do when your leg and then make about ten times stronger. And the idea is that you could hear the bicycle now for almost all computing that under and mild or all of ability. Make no bicycle relevant or. Board the daily mobility. People so what does it do it effectively amplifies the title and you're already doing. Yeah exactly it got it doesn't them the actor's side and twelve of them are dedicated to monitoring what you do your neck. And then imitate you making you make you much stronger almost like you you want. And happily. Sort of brought up. So this kind of like Iron Man for bicycles what you're telling me exactly and then the other big daddy you all what data. About your physical performance. An open as well but not that that they're working all the time in side that we are making sure they reliable. Now you said this is something that you can attached to any bicycle is that correct it's not like you have to go out and buy an entirely new bike this is something that can work with an existing bike. Exactly so you know when you're about by sitting in the dark and light it looked used. You can use I want I am and put a wheel on. And and make it looked up. Now I'm assuming this ask you some kind of battery in order to provide this power can you talk a little bit. About the battery life fit in the charging process and how long it might take to recharge and things like that. Absolutely so it ever battery. And motor. Through computers and all the inspectors and the wireless radio all packed inside that we don't. The battery can now a symbol cart in particular route thirty miles. And we've designed to be so. Because I covered most People's Daily ability. And about eight to take about two hours to get the battery. 80% charge and four hours to get it to honor the charge. However. When you break. Go to. Or what do you make it by remote. Regions in charge and why you. The south how long does the battery last and cold conditions and you know obviously around New England over the last weekend. We are below freezing for much of the odd time there is the battery maintain. That seem distance in those types. Very very little that. So the only the only concern. With regard to whet their hand. If you battery. Is that you can't target out side it's very cold temperatures because of the let you ever read. It can be degraded which means you lose a little bit. But otherwise there can buy a new. Well it didn't make it. And still be saying now important to note. We are taking guy. Either there or the what we need to put temperature then you're all about the batters in their computer that that it needed. Monitor temperature. And that and our on Donovan battery all the make sure only eight in keeping with the big market where. And and looking at where you are in the process of Bob release and this is this available for the public to purchase right now are you doing beta test how far along are you. We started better. In the years engineering. Building the product from the ground up then you're out eight months been prepping and validation. And started shipping to people lap on a while so that we were well and it will be easier to. And and we're shipping order today get that week. Where do you while we're do you do your manufacturing in Massachusetts. Well like you are. Are like hey man Edward Dalton can get a new. You copycat out there the woman that he doesn't bode. And are not what. And how much does it cost to what to buy one duties. It cot but we don't buy is. Is 141990. And at the moment there were going to. Four. 1199. Because there's a bit of away. Few weeks away click click read we go one they're no longer. Will the actual product fourteen at the promotional. Is the goal at some point to get that cost down as you're able to ramp up production and build in higher quantities. Well listen very regret it where movement they knew that the game playing here. Where are focusing on the rear wheel. Were able to change economic of electric bikes we're putting inside what. Was basically the best football does that ever introduced in this cycle. I think that a lot more expensive to build there in your average electric bike or even your top of the line elected. They caught 1002500. To bow. A single telling me that this is anywhere between. You know fifty and 80% less. Then buying a traditional electric bike. Or that it is very destructive yet at the same time. We beat everybody for quality of the product once people try it and you do you compare 118. It's a totally different bigger than it really do what. That's up this is very cool technology a might have to check out any chance that we can do a demo or something like that. Absolutely incredible open house every fry gay people go where I pedestrian dot com and common try it out. Oh where where oh where welcoming people or just come by right. And tried out by other work that does go onto our web site all the information there. You guys who Annika. There. You go over. All of that. I may take you up that up on that the next couple weeks thank you very much for the time very very interest in what you're doing thank you again. But a soft Biederman he's the CEO of super pedestrian. I'll tell you. It it starts getting down and to the point where look you can if if you're somewhere where you're you know ten miles away. From your office and you can have something like this. That takes a lot of the burden off you to do all the work yourself. It starts to get pretty attractive at that type of costs. These things are huge in Asia electric bikes that he is referring to yup. And you have to have them in Asia because you don't have room for cars and drive around in major cities drive around in New York. If you look at the flow of traffic they measure that now in New York City in the measure in Boston. Because of labor in all delivery services that the rate of speed has deteriorated. Terribly. Are you here where you might have been able to average eight miles an hour New York now you're down to four miles an hour. This type of technology chuck is going to be huge in large metropolitan cities. Even I look at you know the ability to get from close in suburbs into the city as well if you have something that can power you like this. Did that that's designate that something that I think a lot of people would potentially consider because it's also. You know you it reduces the Wear and tear on the car you can potentially go from being a two car family the one I mean there's a hold a potential cost savings when it's all and done I don't think people. Would get rid of cars entirely but it drastically shift the need and what they need to get that. We're just think about college campuses rate these will be rampant on college campuses because you know you can't afford it call car on college campus he can afford like. It when we come back we'll continue our conversation about that like but will also be taking a look at snapped out. They went public last week how the shares through today not so hot that's next from our German stock continuity. The latest financial trends theme we'll place it's the financial exchange we've Barry Armstrong and chuck not a on the financial exchange radio network. Trivia is brought to you by with the onyx dental health avionics is revolutionizing. The dental industry. Recent double blind studies UC Irvine found that would be on X removes plaque. Two and half times faster than those leading toothpaste for treating gingivitis. Forty Hurst today by visiting best. Dental gel dot com. All right it's time for trivia contest how many times has Paul McCartney performed. At Fenway Park I have no idea. 680 spotted it that's our text number but it fits the I don't know if you set your idea I I would I might guess that. But I text number is 68680 the price package includes two travel coffee mugs he's at this overcome your very nice. A T shirt and two hands how many times as Paul McCartney performed at Fenway Park in again. The next number is 68680. So truck I read. Over the weekend. That colonials. Melinda deals. You guys which ones or buying up all those shares I did not buy any snapped jet shares. Gave your buddies. Knowing that I talk to I didn't really ask anyone about it but I'll tell you this has the potential be one of those moments that kind of teach some lessons. About what to do what not to do. In the stock market you know it's this is certainly company. That has a lot of excitement about it but we've seen this story before with companies like Twitter and group bonding go pro and Yelp and this and that and what the question is whether they can stand up and and really operate on their own in the long run and the jury is very much out on snapshot it could do. Incredibly well but I wouldn't be surprised that ends of being a complete flop you know. No why do you say that because I hear among young people the end and this is you know on talk and even younger than you track and in your now an old man of thirty. Yup but. I'm talking of people and they say I'm ones now chat. And I it if they cut it's almost like this anti FaceBook. Mentality. Among the younger generations are talking about fifteen year old stewed Killian college absolutely. Are on snap chat and they are not they don't wanna be on with their parents are. But what happens next. Like what happens when anti snapshot comes out what happens when snapped chat isn't cool anymore because this happens with all these things remember. FaceBook used to be the cool place Twitter used to be the cool place MySpace we go back to 2001 was you know the place to beat. MySpace isn't worth the die many know but FaceBook is survived there but that's the exception you know that's that's like saying what Google survived. But like ghost all of this stuff. And a million other search engines died awful deaths because there's only so many that can exist so. Like I look at a company like snapped shut and I just don't know where they're going to be five years now. If they figured out and they figure out a way to make themselves important to people's lives. Okay sure I could see but if all they wanted to do was be cool. There's always someone cooler than you I went to high school too and there's always someone that's cooler. There's always going to be another cool company. And you can't simply rely on that cool factor. Because it only lasts for so long eventually. People get tired of border view that's just how tech goes and that's why techies so dangerous. To get into I remember five years ago. Everyone was convinced that Groupon was going to revolutionize the way that retailers did business. Does anyone feel that way today. I still see their ads on TV but I thought they had they have they changed anything I don't know. That you know audiences now. They give you you don't all of a sudden late. Groupon pretty much you look at it today the stock price is three dollars and 97 cents at its peak it got up to around 27 dollars. You know so like this is what you have to you're not bullish on snapped we hear it sounds like your best meaty you know look war. With early stage tech companies. My default view is that you're going to fail unless you prove otherwise because 99% of the time. That's what happens snapped Jack could be that 1% I'm big knowledge in the that's a possibility. But the law of averages. Is that this isn't going to be the one. All right let me shares are down right. That down 6% today that this would be in its third day of trading if it does end up in negative territory would be the first day that it does closed down actually and you know it's what do you read into that as is that significant now not really at this this is a company that. You know check back a year from now and all of a much better and the book is we'll see what they've been doing as a publicly traded company. But it takes a year or so to kinda get your feet under yourself in that situation just because remember. FaceBook had a terrible first nine months or as a publicly traded company and turn themselves around you get out in the year to year three. And you start seeing whatever one's made of as far as the quality of the executive team and so forth. Well in FaceBook that Sheryl Sandberg and Cheryl was impressive. Back then if you you like guy yes Mark Zuckerberg was the brains behind the operation and and the genius behind it. But Cheryl was the adult in the room and in and that's despite. There's there's a case to be made that Sheryl Sandberg is the best executive out there right now for running tech company. They I'm a big fan it's a strong case to be made for. Eight when you walk into. A client meeting for the first time creativity first meetings today he would take it up there where you get. So how how many times out of ten when you meet if you met with the ten people for the first time how many times out of ten do they ask you the differences between a revolt global and durable global trust. And. It's pretty often. It for me I'd say eight or nine yeah I was gonna say it's it's definitely more than 50% of the time. And and part of the reason is you know when we're working with new clients often times in speaking about armed strike by teachers often content doing that. We're doing in conjunction with tax planning and state. So will meet with somebody. And they'll want history either portfolios which we do and we don't charge that. But they also have questions about gee you know I haven't had my trust looked at thirteen years or have my trust drawn up Poconos 52 and now on 74 and my circumstances changed. Will we get these questions all lost. And you know we're happy to spend time with you talking about it but if you'd like to get something. That you can read and mural hands if you will call this phone number 866. 8485699. He call that number you'll receive a guy called the differences between revolt global. In durable global trust now I think about half the people who request this guide. Are requesting it for their parents their Brothers their sisters their on the wrong goal. Maybe their kids but. I'll tell you it's a very helpful guide Cushing and dole and making it available for the first time ever and it's available for the entire month of march. The differences between revoke Opel and erode local trusts the 2017. Edition. The phone number 86684856998668485699. Chuck I saw. A pretty good argument did that suggests that oil is stopped in this mid fifties price range. And I am a very skeptical when I read predictions about commodity prices weather beaten gold silver copper oil. But this one makes a compelling argument as to why you're not gonna see oil go to seventy dollars a barrel in Europe probably not gonna see go back down to two point seven dollars. Yeah and the argument effectively is that you have two forces that are relatively in balance right now that are driving the energy market on one hand. Yup OPEC who continues to follow through. On the production cuts that they discussed and and really written in and then put in writing knob back during the late fall and early this year. On the other hand. You have US producers in particular shale producers who are starting to drill again and starting to ramp up production again. That are offsetting some of those cuts and kinda keeping things in balance. Where they are right now and to put this in perspective. In the US right now they're 756. Rigs. That are in operation. At the moment okay. That is up about. 50% from the same time last you know we don't know you know how big those are how big deposits are and things like that it's still a significantly off. From where you were back in the 2012 to 2014 range where you had almost 2000 rigs operating rate bought it it is obviously higher. Than what we saw at this point last year so. Additional production starting to come online in the US I'll pull up some numbers and see where rat. Production wise but it's really that increased US production countering the cuts coming from OPEC that's keeping as balanced here. It's actually a healthy environment to be where we're you have kind of a stable price. For commodities that is this important you know you're not talking about. No one could argue whether gold the news is really important or not greater faster copper silver. You know even being. But with oil because so darn much of it gets used every game thing about how many wars and military conflicts of the dude energy. Rate is Alia. I I and did I did I enjoy paying a dollar 69 a gallon for gas yes. But the reality of it is it's a lot more stabilizing for geopolitical situation if oil trades in this 55 dollar pressuring. Well and in talking about where we are a US domestic production little over nine million barrels on a daily basis okay nine point 03 million. I do compare that to. A week ago when it's up about 30000 barrels a day so little bit higher but we're still a little bit below where we were a year ago about nine point one million barrels. OK so. Again this kind of fits with what we're seeing here where US producers coming on a little bit right now to fill some of that gap at this point. What I will tell you US exports of oil are up significantly a year ago. Exporting about 387000. Barrels a day to day 721000. Still almost doubling over the span of the last year. In the the Arabs hate that. Absolutely hate it. On Serb war are in imports are down to imports a year ago. Worry eight point three million barrels a day today at seven point. Five. That you do that that's the type of thing that's gonna cause a problem though pack but at any rate that's a topic for another day. Up next we will be joined by Tim Stephens from the CNET roadshow he's in Geneva these details with the big cars are in Geneva.
