This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong in chunks are enough. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are. How about the round of applause for all the plow guys who have been driving since about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon that's when. The weather really started to hit up here and that's when they started while my club Baghdad. He used by two or three times I guess I'll find out in the Muslim against the bill but. Those guys have one heck of a job the roads were clear this morning at least for my commute struck out with your commute. Pretty much clear for me ran into little trouble on the pipe coming out this morning little bit of a and on cloud Elaine but other than that pretty much all clear. Amazing young you know you think about years gone by where you get a storm and in the city gets botched up for day or two. This year they've been managing they again I think that might have something to do with Charlie Baker. Hell royals think they learned a lot of lessons from two years ago where they had all kinds of issues you remember that back then. Not just the the road that he had all kinds of issues as well in terms of trying to maintain any type of schedule and I think that in general. That winter. Talks are pretty important lessons auto worked this guy started yesterday at three they're still Golan now. And they'll be probably need to for a moment sleep during the day get back outline tonight then finish up yep probably wrap up in that it looks like there was talk of another storm potentially coming in Wednesday and Thursday that appears to be Peter ring out at this point so not looking like it's going to law really deliver their but we've had you know over the last we're probably 45 days now than probably close to feet when it's all said and done. Where's that noise when you need of a busy narrate hey let's say you look at copper last week we talked about copper and we identified. To work stoppages that could have an impact on the price of copper one was in Peru and you can correct me if I'm wrong here track. And the other was in chili dip and a mine in Chile and I can't remember the name of it but there's Escondido Escondido. It looks him. That mind controls about 5%. Of the world's copper supply and I guess those workers were prepared for the strike it went on strike on Thursday. And I guess they have enough. Supplies to strike and keep that mind closed for at least sixty days depths of then you've got. A transportation. Problem for the copper coming out of Peru and now we're reading about labor problems in the Philippines. Yet in all this is done is this is pushed copper up where you know. For most of 2016 it was trading two dollar to two dollars and 25 cents range and then today up to 279. Actually ties to eighty to one point. And I think the big thing is while this is a sharp spike in a sharp increase compared to where copper prices were last year. It still is below the five year historical half. Which tells me. That the markets are don't believe that these guys stats for a what think it's also just saying that the demand isn't there to push it that much higher if you have a lot of surplus since the Indy they. The miners may have a lot in storage is well on it's it's also just China doesn't have the demand that he used. You know China is simply not building as much as they were during that 20122013. Period I think because of that. You're just seeing you know a bump up. From where it's been the last year but keep in mind Topper here to go back to the beginning at 2013 civil war years ago copper trading 350. Even in prices of copper going further back the I can dig him up a vote to see what copper is due back in 2005 and six with the real boom years you know ego back to those times. I thought copper was trading even more than 317 and you wanna go back to you said somewhere that 0506 rain ever retinal fourth through seventh Gaza and get some monthly numbers here. And take this back to let's go back to 2002 just so you we can do here and cut so we go back to 2002. Okay. Copper at that point 76 cents a case of cheap at that point. Which has a recession exactly we spiked up by kind of over the next 45 years we got to about 370. In May of 06. And then we're kind of in that 320 to 340 range for a number much we as high as 39 the in April bow wave right before everything fell apart yup and then we've bottomed out about 140 in December of oh wait Brady is the financial crisis really hit its peak. No police you know the range and and what could happen that you now have three labor issues affecting the price of copper Philippines Peru. And chilling and we'll see where goes from here. Now this is a tough topic for you gentlemen to talk about. Eight teacher argues the profession deserves more play I love my job but I'm broke now the reason it's tough for Tucker and chuck. To talk about whether teachers are over petered out as they're both in relationships. With educators. That's accurate ya know SharePoint and the teachers on average across the country. Make about 54000. Dollar and I did go back to 2013 to get that number. So they make 54000. Dollars on average for the year 2013. And a lot of teachers are taught a contract comes up they argue that they are underpaid. Do you gentlemen have an opinion on teachers being underpaid or overpaid tuck you wanna start or about. No I certainly do think they are underpaid like you know not being biased here goers thought that the dual lot. For our youth you know they get you ready for the working world that there's a lot that goes into opinion teacher and I certainly think there are underpaid. I think they're probably underpaid but not as much as teachers would argue that they're underpaid I also think that one of the ways that they are still fully underpaid. Is in the way that they are expected to effectively. Pay for a lot of their classroom supplies and whereas can you imagine coming into an office setting and someone says yeah yet you gotta go by staples that I knew they did it. The fact that teachers have to pay for classroom supplies and things like that. I think is one of the biggest travesty is out there bomb I think you can probably make an argument the teachers are anywhere between fifteen and 20% under paid. I would hesitate to say that they should earn much more than that because. When even though they're doing great work if the average pay rate goes up 20% somewhere that 65000 range okay. You're still working nine months the I was gonna say isn't a pretty good pay for part time job. Well it's not a part time now how would you define. It's it's a full time Blake when teachers are working during the school year it is a full time job and then some because give mindful time. Teachers in any given week eight hours today ten are today twelve too should probably do intend to twelve hours day when they're in season. And the reason for that because they doesn't stop for teachers when the day ends for kids is they have to go home the gotta figure at the lesson plans for the next day they got a grade papers grade tests all that happens at home actually until they were nine months a year ago I do they even work that they do. Summer vacation these days to months and then you get another four weeks off you get two weeks in spring and effectively now you get about four days in Thanksgiving and then you get about a week and a half two weeks Christmas and getting paid today. What I mean teachers. The school's little right they're getting pager. It just I think I don't think error I I don't think teachers are underpaid I I will tell you. One thing that holds down teachers' wages if you're an educator you of a son or daughter who's working as a teacher. I would tell you the number one reason that teachers wages are low in that is that pensions that they are receiving. The cost of the pension for public school educator is prohibitively high. And it reduces. Educator wages let me explain why it reduces wages let's say you're really good math teacher. And you're teaching math in. I don't know lately you're teaching math in Worcester Massachusetts. And you're really good that. And and and you you would Euro offer a really good math teaching job but the job is in Rhode Island. We you can't take that job lately the east pensions that the teachers are receiving track effectively handcuff them. To the state in which they teach for 35 years so there's a lack of worker mobility. In this particular field and that causes we just to be able. So how do you factor in the fact that private school teachers on average make 141000 dollars less per year than public school ones. I think it's a different environment and weary here and at a private school year to two eager teaching in a private school for different reasons that you're teaching yet. At prep school because of lifestyle and you don't want to be tied down and you wanna leave. For prep school teachers walked and leave after 345. Year but those are the ones that are dragging down wage some. Public school I think is is is the the problem with the public school teachers if you talk to the towns that are. You know looking at the teachers they'll say teachers don't make 54000 dollars a year or they may 90000 dollars a year because of all the money we have the fund for their country well and. And there's no doubt that you're right about that in the that's unfortunate isn't factored in the salaries some or get a lot of techs were people's alien teachers don't hit 213 and it's not what I can tell you. My wife is a guidance counselor. Her job does not end at 2 or 3 o'clock. She is they are dealing with parents probably up until about six or seven every day and she's generally child in an extra juice in it 7 AM and she gets home and she is either talking to email and parents pretty much up until we have dinner. So you know for people azalea that they you know deducted on at the teachers are not done it three these days the date does not and there and I know this because I see so we. Yeah the endured your married to a dedicated professional but what the argument on making. As a relate to worker mobility that that can be applied to police officers. Firefighters. Teachers there's no doubt about the limited portability of those pensions absolutely ties people down and the problem is it doesn't open it up to new people coming in the system right and and bear. So that's how you end up with some bad teachers as well or try getting rid of the teacher's been in the school system for twenty wanna tell you if it takes a long time just to break in my wife didn't break you didn't finally get a full time job until she had close to five years of experience so it's not like you just come out. And you're 22 minutes I am ready to go. But that also is an argument demonstrating that teachers are not underpaid because your wife had to wait five years to break it right then why they were underpaid. There would be a lot of opportunity available. Right maybe if you if wages are really truly low. Relative to the desire or ability of the position there'd be more jobs bill I don't know if it necessarily is a reflection of wages or the fact that there just isn't enough turn over there in view of the market it's artificially depressed just because there is no turn over so let's say that well in turn overs affected by pensions. Right well exactly that's what I'm saying though it's it it doesn't mean it's underpaid it just means there's no turnover because people that people effectively are handcuffed in not able to Lee. Up next we're going to be Ed by the way our poll question today is do you think teachers are. Under greater what does it say under Eric underpaid say go to financial exchange showed dot com. In order to participate financial exchange showed dot com we'll come back to the topic. But next we're going to be talking about. New applications for college financial eat. Hi everybody very Armstrong here from the financial exchange and I'm joined by Jay tool who's a senior vice president and leader bank. And leader bank has an exclusive. Program for those of you who are landlords here Cora collecting rent from one tenant for a 101 tenants. Zero and it might be something that you want to look into Jake talked to us about zero how long has it been around. We've been offerings he ran for almost two years now two years and his have been successful spent extremely successful we've. Offered his product to really target hardly in the hours were still collecting checks in paper form in this day and age. And the purpose of zero needs to really bring everything online meet electronic but more importantly. Have a piece said it and forget it so what's a landlord hazard ten and set up. And really there's nothing that needs to be done until the leases over. The rent is automatically drafted from the Tenet's account can you choose the date of the month is it always the first of the month or could it be if there that's a sign attendant on the fifteenth to to be the fifteenth of every month yup absolutely so landlord cites the initial date. Whatever day of the month that is. You know beat this same date every month penalty collected how much does it cost the landlord to set this all so it's absolutely free if the landlord banks with OK so if you're a landlord knew if your bank account leader pain you get this is you rent service for getter for free. That's you have a bank account elsewhere will still provide a service for small monthly charge and then if you ever decide to move your bank relationship over waive the fees that. Pretty pretty simple it's pretty cheap and it's a great product are lame or perhaps only club. Lot of our it's called zero rent and the website for it is www. He raised dot net. The college application and decision process just got a bit more complicated Julian Berman from the Wall Street Journal joins us now to tell us. How it got more complicated hi Julian are you. Are good so. Laughs as I recall it'd been awhile since those film these things out but. Used to be done during the month of January January was stressed time because he would put it together your maps application that's ultra. Now you'd Emmitt and art spelling out that's. Had a little bit earlier so all of the Bert I'm at here. Opened up. On October 126. And when did they start getting back to the families and saying okay this is what your package. Looks like. There's a guy I know a lot of families are waiting right up until April to decide as to where the kids are gonna go to school as a waiting to figure out all the numbers. You have to have really good patent for the call and letting people apply earlier. You. I have didn't know about more about that I want as a college earlier on the map. By. Only some corporate outing back in the earlier this I'm you know maybe hearing act but I actually packages endgame here at. Larry but a monarchy as they won't hear anything and I'll marker while much. But people are and. Now is the application. Different now that they open it up in October. It a little bit different but one out of this thing and get it back are required to use there I mean each and two years prior to application or doubt what I mean they better information arm that turn out and twenty court. But why haven't eat and eat application called. How does this affect kids in terms of when they're making their decision as to which school they're going to attend this kid's. As I remember it might apply do as many as twelve or fifteen schools. Gap so it's really expect them much in the front you know typically do not after the eye and on the earth. Don't eat that entire evening I immediately packages earlier they really may want to plea. Get all of them back empathy can really compare. But what do you would use that you get up I neatly packed my college that was your packets going in. You know in January at a book party. You go back to college again like that avenue that Shannon. Would if you're doing like an early decision or an early action application. They should help. This should help him he'd get. More accurate information earlier in the past what happened. Keep you offer and I won't packet Gordon. I picked up for you now because people are submitting their financially in a nation earlier hopefully they view. A more accurate package along with Eric. What happens if yer during that school year or so you get accepted in your going to college. And your mom decides to go back to work in your dad gets a promotion and raise. Does that affect your financial aid the next year. So it shouldn't affect. If it's been a fact. It basically it should not and it should not active situation I'm a marked a college to change you probably are not him or knock out a college which ain't it. Laettner and come and go about rate because. That would mean that can't. Buy it come does that he didn't mean a year from Wendy's and the and when you're gonna add ten core. He might wanna have a college you know high. GAAP as op where my heart cut aboard the word you know a you know a big medical emergency or something like that. A lot of the time. Opinion negotiate these deals with say getting your dream school but you know another school's gonna give via 5000 dollar board financial aid. Can you go back and say look I really wanna go to this university. But this other schools given me 5000 dollars more what can you help me out. Yet the exact Abby and about it dot they. It is possible to negotiate here I can only offer. Content that profitable albeit different from what you might typically viewed it as regular negotiation now what experts say is. It deep Barry aren't about what you eat from the college. At a peanut sort of open your card go to the back and say you know I could be able to go out here they're able to get me out and are Smart. And sometimes we'll accommodate pat and you aren't a quote are amenable you at least knowing about you where you talk among other squawk you don't like as well as much rather than a year debt. To work. Art is fat so money is at first come first serve so if you know you better off getting your applications in early does that benefit your cause. The bank could always get an M at earliest possible I'm Eric and about eight financial aid that really at our amber urban so well how convert on eight at. At the deadline and they you know they don't go for comfort. And I'm all. They have been called priority outlined waddle I have I know is you get as much at all. Very good Gillian thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. Julian Berman Wall Street Journal and marketwatch.com. Chiming in on the new apps that application process and that was always stressful time you know leave the application to school doubles was with stressful. And everybody ends up getting into the school but I just remember it around the kitchen table in your crunching numbers and here. Considering your offers in your opportunities it's it's stressful. Oh it is and I'll tell you I do know about quite a few people have been able to negotiate up none the amount of financially they've gotten in the way they pretty much done it is if and other schools offering more now is you would early show the school that you want to go to hey here's the letter that I have from another school that's offering me more if you can't match this I'm going to go somewhere else yeah and more often than not they end up bending because they do have room in their budgets. To be able to do so in your peer group what was the biggest. Difference he saw in terms of the negotiated rate over four year period up 40000 dollars to 101000 a year down. That's so real lot we don't work. You know EP Euro 40000 dollars she got to make eighty. Pay for bring that about how long it takes to save that extra forty is not just making idiots look you gotta save you know 5000 dollars a year then 8910 years to get to. The the this that's this is you study housing. It it is becoming a really tight housing market yet trying to buy a place at my daughter announced all I wanna buy a place that we started looking. Holy smokes to block its yeah 89% of metro areas have seen the median price of homes exist. Earth and so are median price of homes increase. In the fourth quarter and so he continues the broad based housing gains and I'll tell you. Talking and a more realtors on you know poking around myself walking two while potentially move in the next year to. And I'll tell you. Inventory continues to remain snow so tight at this point. And for anything entry level you are still seeing bidding wars because there are so many people trying to get in the house I have multiple friends now that are trying to buy. They continue to get priced out by people coming in with higher cash off what is their price range that they're trying to buy drugs they're looking 3.5 to 375. Believe it. Is it if you're gonna if you're gonna buy a place. For for 500000 dollars or less yeah it's cheaper than rent. It is an end and they just continued to get priced out please this point and and and there are even looking you know they originally. As we talked about last week they're one of those millennial who was saying look I want something that's relatively finished relatively new. And it kind of pulled off that just as they said look we can't afford anything it's in perfect cheaper and you spend a few years with sweat equity. And you put money into use you know you spend your weekends go on back and forth to Home Depot and and working on your house but you get rewarded for that later that yet. Five years from now lefty tuned up your house and you want upgrade we gonna get paid. In theory. You know it always keep in mind there's always a real estate cycles that you know I had it in general rule of thumb is what you need to plant owned that house for ten because in or longer you know and in a shorter time period. You could have something like the await crisis happened and all of a sudden he can't unload these and he. You think back to wasn't that long ago. 91011. Those are younger you couldn't give away house you know the marvell didn't even begin to recover. Even modest and it'll eleven. Now I I was gonna see twelfth yeah I have eleven early twelve is where you started see the dead even then it was was. Modest those of you who bought. In 910 or eleven I would think you're certain in the catbird seat in terms of equity. I unity all year you don't know nothing ten years oh yeah I I suspect you've made an awful lot of money if you bought a house in it either anyone of those three years 910 or eleven yup you produce an analog. Equity bank stocks continue to rally. That might be because Daniel to rule from the Federal Reserve. He's resigning. Yet to rule for those you who aren't familiar with them and my guess is that's most of view he's not really a household name. He'd announced prior to wad trump coming on board he was going to be resigning sometime in the first half of this year. That date has now been set some more on or around April 5 that was got about two months left. It to rule O is one of the guys. Who in the last decade. Has really been influential in shaping fed regulatory policy after the excesses that led. To the Great Recession so he is going to be moving on. Another. Sign that you are potentially going into an easier regulatory environment. We're big backs up the Heidi I this is good news for for anybody in the banking and assure that anybody who wants a lot of banking stock. In Las Vegas is gearing up for their first pro teams they're gonna have an NHL team. Next year they're selling tickets beat the lithium liberty sold thirteen thousand season tickets. And I'll tell it like I birdied Tucker nobody even my friends and I've already talked about hey we wanna go to Vegas one weekend fervor when it sure you know what it when when the Bruins go out there yet bull travel out we'll spend a weekend there will be late. It's it's I think they probably. Every team on the East Coast right there in basis saying the same thing if you're in a Rangers fan because it's easy to get it even every city has a nonstop. Today is on the West Coast I know guys who have been LA that say look when the kings global to drive for five hours we had out there you know it's a good time to go for a weekend it is an app to beat teammate you're rooting for people just wanted to coated hot ticket a hockey in the Las Vegas it's very very cool I'd taken it doesn't matter the bronze a player to call via bonus. I'm gonna go in a matter watch. I think this team is going to do. Harvest what a what if the teams can be awful. Like trying to run any type of pro sports team in Vegas them you just have to understand your players are not going to compete day in and day out it's not going to happen. I don't know. The ILA is it's just the biggest team is gonna have money. They're gonna have a new facility to big TV market two million people live in that market. I think this could be very much like the Florida Panthers if you think back to the Florida Panthers when they entered the league. They are competing in the Stanley Cup with in five years and they were competitive team. From the early days if everybody did their second or third years were they when they went deep into the play I don't know how competitive they'll be I can -- a big business wise it's going to be a huge success I think they'll have to be competitive. There's eight feet deep they've gotten money. This is the T this is going to be. Even rich team. Especially when you compare to the coyotes. Or Columbus. Or the Florida Panthers are you know they're gonna have a lot of the TV money and they're gonna have ticket sale money. I think they're gonna do very well keeping one of the key things that these teams are learning as you have to have your form teams located nearby. So maybe Rio will be where they get an American League team of that and I think that's important for them. In the long a mirror in that the islanders might leave. Brooklyn and I know Hartford is trying to get them to move to back to Connecticut to heart. Let's say I it was a damn who announced last week that they were going to be putting much money into their arena and they they're going after the islanders the islanders might actually get evicted. From the Barkley says because they're not drawn. Attendance with a team that bad it's kind of hard to draw. Did struggle there's added desirable that's a grossly mismanaged French excuse used to be as you really don't years you remember the old Nassau coliseum pictured who was pretty much like it was like a high school and just about all. The thing I'd like or gated metal siding pretty it was decades. It's always dump it in Saddam but it was not like high school you know it was I deal with regulating big high school ranked. Eddie. Our our strong here and I'm joined by estate planning attorney Todd what ski from law firm Cushing in Dolan and we're talking about. Some of the top reasons top ten reasons if you will that you should create an estate plan. Taught first question for you is there anything that can be done to reduce the amount of the state taxes. That your family pays after you pass away. Yeah you know certainly that's not a reason to do that you're darn right I'd like to say avoiding estate taxes maybe is the number one reason. And I think it's important for people realize that that with the state taxes federally being high. You can never forget about the state and the state estate taxes so yes there absolutely is and what you should do is. I'm assuming before you pass away. You know you should have these trusts in place in if you create these trusts whether their revoke a bull or irrevocable nature depending on your wish. We are still going to have buckets inside and just. Quickly the pockets that are that are created when one dies are designed to actually. Region and shelter assets on the first and what does that C a family let's just say you know you're you're doing with a gross estate. 23 million dollars what do the minimal savings when you do that. Here in Massachusetts wholesale and I think as a two million dollar estate and you're saving absolutely 100000 dollars in masters by creating the just like creating these trusts otherwise you're giving away a hundred ran into me. We pay taxes but taxes we don't have to pay. Those are the worst kind I hate all kinds of taxes and I'm sure you do too. That's 80255. 38. 81 Patricia we for Morningstar joins us now to talk about a couple mutual funds here honey mutual fund Monday Patricia thank you very much for joining us. It. Patricia let's talk first about the Oppenheimer global fund. Ticker on it is OPP a ax what exactly is this fund what to do. Right that this is global growth equity funds so the manager Reggie bombing he can search globally for. Means that skating is global growth seen generally he invests belongs to be mean games one of them is. Mass affluent that's the idea that people are developing world becoming more. Middle class they're buying more things than a hole made a lot of consumer names such as you know leave girl Colgate. He also likes the speed of new technologies that we hold our software named. Internet related terms and like Japanese companies that focus on components that go into cellphone. And then the last scene that he likes is aging. And still hooked on health care. What do you like this fund compared to some of the other ones in this space the you know it's it's a very crowded area what makes this one stand out. Well generally Oppenheimer they have a very good. International equity investment team and they have not a lot of managers who did this for a long time they have a very solid track record that is definitely one of them. Com and party bombing has been at Oppenheim for twenty years he's been it's years and it just fun. Overall. The fund is a little bit more risky than its peers because of its growth orientation but over his ten year. Risk it just returned has been slightly higher than the benchmark and the category average. What is this one cost for an investor to get into. OK with it expense ratio is one point 14. Which is lower than average it averages about 13 one point before that we like it could that we can well. And we're does that you said that's a little bit below the average. Right and looking at the upfront cost how much are there is just a shared they have other share classes as well. They have an issue across the clout they have an institutional and amp. Level load. They have about I'd picture crisis. Let's turn over now and the second fund that we're gonna talk about here is the is the gateway fund I believe the gateway fund class say yeah. What exactly is this fun go about investing in. But the fun does have a little bit different concept so it provides the US. Equity exposure that it hasn't options overlay which basically tempers the volatility of the fun. So it's kind of like an end extractor it hole. An and 500 component but it is and it sells. Call options and by put options and what that essentially does is that it kind of tapped the up side of the find a way to punish China is that it provides downside protection. So for example in 20081. Thing at the 500 was down about 37%. Decline was only down. 14%. At over the long term when you're not. You know when you're avoiding these huge downturn. That a moral level performance over the long term he can come out ahead and you don't have that stomach churning it up and down that you have a peek at at a street equity exposure. Very good Patricia thank you very much for joining us today. Thank you. Patricia we from Morningstar the two funds that we're talking about the gateway fund class a shares ticker on his GAT. You acts and the Oppenheimer global fund has the ticker OP PA. Acts wonder that on a global fund like that. How much currency risky take him. It really depends on where they are going about investing. In general. There's ways to mitigate that in fund managers try to. But he can never get rid of it completely and that's tough within you know the thing about the currency swings. That have occurred in the last few years only that the Euro it's been a challenging couple years to be an international investor because in some cases. What the company might be worth more in Europe as you mentioned. But because the euro's worst blast it doesn't translate into your actual return rights. Eight years you can be eat your company might be doing well but the darn shareholders. Feel like they're losing money because of the currency. Gold from Cushing handle we're talking about motivation to create in the state plan here's one how Todd can somebody. Insure. That an ex daughter in law or an ex son in law. Is not going to take half of my child's inheritance when I die in the event that they got a divorce. You know I don't think I'd sit down at a client meeting. And this doesn't come. All right Betty do you bring it up Purdue the clients for. I think it's a combination of both but but once you mention it if they don't match because it always think about after death while I know and when you mention it. They jump on. I want my sponsors here at lower divorce is so prevalent I guess that's the pro and here's the worry right. You guys you both you leave each of your children half a million dollars right. And then three years after you're gone they get a divorce you're gonna lose half a 500000 dollars on a good rate. And so what we try to do is inside the trust again another family reason to do is they play a non tax reason to do and they plan. And and we inside the trust we create its shares for the children and we have independent trustee if you will making one decision only. And that is in their sole discretion to make it distribution to the child. Porch of the credential and that sole discretion provides all the creditor protection that they need from the divorced in the future. Of copper hitting some highs for the last eighteen months now do you use some work stoppages at some mines in transportation facilities down in South America. Download I'll be curious to see. If they hold the line on those work stoppages down and indeed they do you could copper. I don't know 350 day it would it would not be that hard to imagine that if they hold the line invariably. In the past. They have not been on feet. Supposedly the big miners in Chile and supposedly they have enough stored money and supplies to last sixty case. That's only the dead tell you what you don't know is how much money had the copper company Abbott write much how much supply do they have it in warehouse. Well exactly how much is unsold at higher prices they can just sit back and say. We can deal with this first with troops for three or four months because all of a sudden. If you of workers that are out you know and and they prepare for two months you go out another 234 weeks beyond that. And all of a sudden those workers have to get back in their just as they need the page that you that you. Nearly half of young millennial that would be you guys. Get foul not a young millennial anymore that's true you're thirty on an old Mullen your the year during the older X action that. Nearly half of mullah meals young girls getting thousands of dollars in secret support. From their parents I guess first thing is wise secret and what do they mean by support. You know what they're saying is that in a lot of cases about 40% actually. Kids are getting. Significant assistance of up to 3000 dollars on average move. From their parents and a lot of it. Might even undermining their a year away it is on an annual base is okay and a lot of it is you can go to things such as rent and so forth in some cases. Which you know what surprised me I would figure most parents. Would say what if if you want to come live at home for six months in order to build up some money around placed fine but. My parents would have never subsidized Myron like that. You know what I did was I helped my kids when they graduated. And you know I took him shopping for clothes for work. And up I helped about the deposit on the first. Apartment they were gonna go ahead but then they paid back goes alone not again yep pretty cold this clothing shop the clothes shopping was in you said we have heard for guy. You know you need half a dozen suits you need some clothes to Wear to work yeah I took them they get them to Joseph A banks all the boys and we did you know we I I outfitted them but once I did that. Mine were launch IE I haven't human gnome. My dad pretty much did the same thing it's yet to me there's been you know 800 bucks on suits or something like that Omnia the buy one get for free whenever wives. And then the other things that I did have for the first couple years are still my parents' insurance for years to. And I still was on their cell phone plan for maybe a year to was well until I moved off of that's the problem I have to get kids off the self they're still on your plan are because you get these deals. Because how were they still on. I feel now the last well there haven't been in my parents' plans since late 2010. And the soccer you know I looked into getting. Off of mine mock my mother planned but it is it's cheaper for me to stay on -- is cheaper for everybody should pay her being your plan or Sharia is she preparing your kid pay her and bill and obviously like you gotta sentiment invoice for the last five or six years then I'm hoping they'll remember me in my retirement yours on the campaign my parents backward by Netflix now here and I am I pale 120 dollars a year so they can watch what ever they want another they are retired they're sort of retired. Snapped I'm hearing good and bad things about snapped I'm not a user of the technologies that'll fully understand it. But they're going public. They're supposedly racing 25 billion Earth's gonna give them a 25 billion dollar valuation yup they go public. Is this just another. Did tech IPO or we'd be reading about this thing in the trash and six month here's the problem is no windows because when FaceBook IPO. And Twitter IPO now no one knew which one of those was going to be successful FaceBook went down to like seventeen bucks a share right FaceBook FaceBook had to do a whole lot wrong before they could finally turned things around in the in the last three years. They've hit on all cylinders Twitter on the other hand never has seemed to get its act together so the big question is you know bill Twitter awful. You think you refer to it is the sense one it is it is one of the most vial places you'll see of so. Snap here's here's what's now here's what I do and I and I again I prefer I am not I don't have the app on my phone I don't fully understand. But what I do though. Is that they dominate the absolutely dominate the younger market and a lot of young people abused teenagers. The big question is can they maintain because remember for the longest time FaceBook was dominant now mark yeah okay. What FaceBook was able to do was successfully pivot. To being a broad based. Social media platform and they did that by making it. Almost the default wait to log in for just about anything whenever you go to any apple website how many times you just click login with my FaceBook pro for more times than you but then you don't. Which snapped Janice do is find some way to make itself that. Integral to your overall web experience and they find a way to keep the fifteen year old that are on it now we have to keep them when they're 35 years exactly so it's. Will they. I think it's always an uphill battle for social network Africa is what makes people go to a social network. Is the fact that it's the cool thing to do win I remember when I was going to college and we finally were able to go on and get FaceBook account. Every one did an on day one because it was the coolest thing you can do and and when you're eighteen that's all that matters to you but when you're 25 and thirty. You don't really care about how Cooley or anymore is because but they're not in the kids on their use of it all day. You might snap gentle have been around two and a half years that they might be keeping a month and now the question is when the next big thing comes out. Do they stay there is kids did not stay on Twitter at Twitter was the big thing for kids within their father stared. And all of a sudden Twitter wasn't cool place to be anymore so the question also is it too is it could it be those reporters very negative. EU unity and you described it as a vital. It is it's also not a very intuitive. Now Jenna has a much better interface in terms of its usability there but keep in mind you know there were places you go back through the history of social media networks. And there are hundreds of failures for the few that do succeed you can go back you've ever MySpace. No windows MySpace was bought by. Murdoch by Murdoch for about a billion dollars and it was then sold to Justin Timberlake for like ten million. Because he predicted lost all its value. And MySpace was FaceBook before FaceBook but he couldn't take that next step. That jet booked kids might be on it today I don't know if we can take that next. Who you'll find other broad public. A news we do we have to date yet and angry at hardy sometime early march is what we're talking about it but we don't know no there's no hard date yet and that's what people are scrambling. Trying to figure out you know existing going to be hot IPOs and pop on the first day in and fizzle than pop on the first day in rally ninety nobody know the the track record for IPOs like this over the last 56 years not that they'll happen in this case but the track record that you've seen. Tens do you pretty decently for the first six months and then once the executive lock up expires right it just craters for the next year to. Whole Foods Market we talked about the stock last week the symbol is WFM. Here's subject caught my attention. The company's same store sales have declined in each of the last six quarters to me. Being in you know I told you this in the past when I'm buying the stock specially retail stock like this I look at same store sales up. A year and a half they have not been able to grow six quarters in a row they've been shrinking. Not a sign of healthy company has knocked it tells you two things either they can't get new customers in the store or their existing ones are not coming as frequently are buying as much. None of those are good situations for them and so you know this is a company. That I'm gonna make a terrible pun now but does not have the healthiest outlook when it comes to its business right now it's a fact that. Unfortunately. They they were they get a first mover advantage they were the first person in the organic space then everyone else started doing it at a lower cost point their price point. And all of a sudden those fat margins that they enjoyed for so many years. They're gone now and. And I miss it wasn't like I don't want a completely trashed this company it is a pleasant experience shopping. They guy I liked it the small stores are smaller. What I don't like the pricing too expensive commitment more than that rate even if I was rich and I can afford new money was no object. You can't get everything you need. That you eat you go to a big story like today. Kroger or medium market basket super Stop & Shop he got everything. Stores rate you that are total a whole foods. If it's a limited well an imminent and here's the thing I get that they're trying to be this socially conscious company. I don't care about when and I don't I do that but here's here's here's where I was going with this. You've got to carry regular toilet paper you've got to care like. I'm not gonna buy the stuff that doesn't work. All right that you got to be able to get all the stuff you need for you gotta be of the did the year your bear I wanna buy regular touch instead of some organic weird stuff that doesn't taste like Heinz Ketchup you know regular toothpaste. Or or if you wanna get if I wanna get so I don't want something that's made out of lake liver like it. Lunch bag lunch bags for a site. Public if they let I don't want because they laid out of hemp like that doesn't do any good I'm just thinking of my most recent trip to the girl for store which was yesterday. Right and we need things like what banks were you to paint and hormonal pressure lunch bags never earth that I personally would have only had paper ones there they would have been in the wouldn't affect the sale which is right and you would pay double what you would have paid it any other stores now. Now they I I yeah. I would not I'm not a buyer of whole foods and don't hold it when you just leave it in by the way Stop & Shop in stores like that they're they're doing a great job with their organics election now they are now to tell if pros and stop shop this topic auction multiple IL's top notch of choices for organic food and rotors and that's where I get all my food announced you know. And I. Tend to agree future there's a there's also a Whitman's opening up nearby to me this summer and you know I'm a visit might keep me from moving for another year to that might do it. There are just vote go to financial exchange oh does come in castaway. Those insurance bills coming in a couple times a year. And you know it's amazing how little attention we paid to what we are using for insurance we're joined now by. Laura Adams from insurance quotes dot com to talk about what we're paying for auto insurance I lore RU. Thanks for having made you know you tends it speaking. Just from us my own perspective you tend to get a little lazy as early to your car insurance bill comes in you just pay. Now if you've been at that company in the broker for a long time he just kind of assume. That's got to be the right premium. Is that the rate attitude. Absolutely not you definitely hit the nail on the head it's late Democrat and Asia and whatever we want to cut it there's just some is nursing a fair that we we can't seem to get real and I think that it's very interesting because that and as Americans we tend to think of ourselves that's pretty good shoppers get it like to get the best deal on. Groceries and clothes and a lot of the everyday products that we back. But would ensure we find that most Americans are really missing the boat answered quote did a survey recently. We've had 30% of consumers. They never drop their carts or who's got it covered just left little land sometimes a decade. And that's really dangerous because. In most cases are going to be losing money if you've got that order just you know let it kind of let it sit and ride attitude. Which is it ten to be eaten baby boomers that are the most. Lackadaisical as it relates to their auto insurance are millennial suffering from the same malady. Inter Milan you tend to be a little bit more on the ball here they are more likely to shop for new policy on a regular basis we found that 42%. A millennial these are at age eighteen to 26 said. They shopper at about once a year or even worse frequently for a better race. So you know they are definitely it could be the fact that there appear perhaps looking for more savings petered out earning as much as older Americans they're they're more resourceful. When it comes to finding savings. A that actually the way we all should be thinking about insurance is not a product that you want to that and for yet. You know it into this without him we just need to build into our routine maybe it's. What's the near times every January put that on our calendar days to go headed shop worn Greg your birthday or China Europe again on your calendar. As a reminder to shop around there's no downside shopping around there are only the upside that you might save them money. So. Two dead and G the desert her is like with your. Credit if you apply for credit too often you're gonna damage your credit does it hurt you to switch insurance companies if I leave. Are bella and I go to state farm is second hurt me. It does not that's an interesting question because. When insurance companies look extra credit and by the way they do in all that the the restate that the majority of states do allow insurance companies to look at your credit that's what's called. Soft inquiry under credit but it does not hurt your score like it would if you were opening a new credit Carter making hard inquiry on the accounts. There which I'm not gonna virtual credit. And that's why I think there's really no downside. Other competitors don't know that your shopping either he can do it anonymously. With no financial ramifications. So this is why it is still important to take advantage of the opportunity to shop. And find out if you're leading the money on the table. At what point should you drop the collision coverage on your car I did that recently was one of my trucks because the darn thing had very little value left on it like he did if fate. If you need it and so I just said lamm why not paying all this money for collision insurance. Yak it really does make sense to drop that once the value of the car is that today. A thousand maybe 2000 her lap and it it does make sense to drop that we think about the additional amount Ukrainian figure paying each year. And they use you know weigh that against okay what would it really cost to repair the car even you know that where total completely what the value. On you got to think about that breakeven when he jokes that is that's another thing that people tend to let rye and may there not analyzing what they're actually paid for with in the policy. You know we see the ads are mean insurance is a really large advertising category there's ads all over the place. But you if you're calling Geico. Or if you're calling state farm bureau we calling this one company so how do you. How do you know that your your quote is being in your insurance is being quoted among multiple carriers. Yeah and you certainly can't called it individual carriers I can't think it's a little bit more efficient and easier to use the service online on at that quote. And insert quote these are brands that. Are we get our family and they are really convenient you know twenty force that he can go online picture information and with just you know 11 to order form that you fill out you're going to get multiple quotes back. And that way you're going to compare policies apple Apple's that's another thing you've got to make sure when you're talking to different people different companies. Are you really kept hearing that staying benefit and for the price which are getting a lot of time that could be slightly different and that might be why you're getting you know media little. Slightly higher or lower rate and the other guy. But when you are changing all the time. Laura what do you don't wanna do it online you wanna talk to human being. Yeah I mean certainly you can do that as well insurance quotes has numbers so going to turn that dot com you're gonna figure member dare you can talk to somebody. And they will do the work for you ahead it's just a really quick way to get a lot of information back you one. Very good very good thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. Having more Adams insurance quotes dot com is just what does Inkster nobody wants to do. I actually update in my coverage last week you do it online the online via and I. Much like you letting go letting get rid of collusion completely but I did move down to it limited collision policy which pretty much means that if I caused the accident they can't prove it was someone else I'm liable than announced that the day before the big winner storms and driving home saying why didn't do that yesterday late. This was not a good idea how many how many miles the avenue car. I'm at about 52000. It's still pretty guys who view it is but I figure you know in general I'm pretty responsible driving at this point so I trust in my ability and your bickering thing. Yeah so. And but if somebody hits you if someone hits me says things that are covered is someone rear ends besides what's he or anything like that where you are and I'll call you. I would assume of the plow is. Plowing like what you like when my car or somebody and make a noose is Tucker and he told me to ask my friend got hit by a party or that I would like cars parked there when I'm driving his park doesn't. Barry's driver and he's trying to because I parked in the driveway. So I don't have any plowed injured go for something like that then and but yeah for pockets via got some big hits and issues yeah. Cost cutting a foot and LOB what's going on and LB I thought they were fabulously successful everybody looks ill. Yeah LOB is making us and changes they are freezing it's their pension plan at the moment there are also. Looking to what try to move up pushing people towards an early retirement let's talk about the pension yeah. Freezing their pension plan. Is in May have a pension plan that is similar to wait a schoolteacher or firefighter might have it up in an effort to be more fiscally responsible. They're stopping for all current employer right. Correct that's what they're doing and what they're doing instead is they are going to be bumping up contributions on the 41 K side of things. So they are still going to be making significant contributions but what they're trying to do was rain in some of those future liabilities on the pension plans side. And clean things up there their sales actually. Overall were flat in 2015 to the guys to get the boots and I guess I guess the growth the boots is offset by some strolls elsewhere. What it's got to beat is because there that we were talking about how they're adding shifts. The boots they're back ordered now you know it's just I guess maybe there are other stuff the regular apparel and things like that probably isn't doing quite as well. Well hopefully the the are they private or that problem LB as private bank. You know talk it's a place that they've seen at the parliament walked by it would order what it is women's vote is like high end. Well yeah and neonatal I'd say Middleton high. Mid to high now I've never been seen. Yes I've I don't go to malls so if there in malls I'd that's where you would find them yeah I I've never seen one but. Yes of this is this company based in Quincy is going to be filed for their IPO were filed for an IPO Friday in unity at queen's. Queen's yeah not quits. Which he added I agree it's queen Z I don't like took Sperry thank. Working on it. But yes this Quincy based company is they filed for their IPO on Friday. And this was a company that initially. Went public under a different name in the 1990s before being taken private a little bit later on in 2006. Okay. And so finally making a return to the public markets here probably in the next couple months or so. And this is a company that is growing fairly rapidly actually in the retail space sales up 23%. Over the last two years so it's one of those few retail companies that is showing some decent growth rate. You know I went to the theater on Saturday night he has impressed which seek. The great comet never heard of that plane really haley's comet it's playing at the imperial in Manhattan and we went on Saturday. I doubt was a great news well opt out to highlight. My wife liked it and that's really that. Not say how I evaluate. Theater. When I went to see you don't falsely you know Carol opinions. Yes on from there she is there's a show beautiful on Broadway and that was that news the music was my generation lobbed it. This one I did falsely. And so that it could have been that it I thought I don't how how how far into the showed defaults first pack the first that first. Lately act to two part First Act First Act fell asleep at the intermission I did not make it to a national and so I. Big I is great without him movies for a time actually but the other three people that I went with they all really enjoy it and my wife has told me in the past that I culturally. You know to work through so. Did this for you here's the question do you judge a plea to be bad if you fall asleep during yeah because it didn't coldly. Tareq if you have a chance with he beautiful Carole King. It was relief it. But he he see your generation and appreciated by two that's my generation's music. It's not yours so you may not be as enthralled with the broad issue beautiful morning Hamilton. Hamilton. Just for kicks I said OK let's take a look Elena Ticketmaster to 500 bucks probably it was exactly when he 500 bucks and they were not good seats now for the back row. With that. It's it's just incredibly popular and it's it's incredibly good by all accounts I've seen it obviously at the actors aren't any of this money told and scuffed up by the never get the money the agencies they ask you never get the money these ticket agencies have developed. Robot. That by all the tickets. And then they sell them on the secondary market as huge markets. Yet it is it. Almost surprised that they have raised prices more in order to try to get more of that secondary mark they have starting in this year they they did. But they're still selling tickets were sold last year. And on the secondary market is it's easy as to what you have to pay if you wanted to see him some of the big or is there Harry Potter now coming out in London. So that that tickets would be nuts. Yes some of the that the big ticket resellers at this point it's. It's it's pretty unseemly what they do because it's not like so what it used to be if you wanted to scalp tickets and you had to go when you had to go and wait there and physically by the ticket yourself yet putting some effort. Now as you said on a robot it's you know it's it's all done just their programs online there's no effort there and then you just. They contribute. Nothing to society so what the producers of Hamilton are doing which is marked it's I don't know how they're gonna do it administratively. Dear. Read the they're going paperless ticketing. Right see you buy it online yet paperless in in order to get your cracked your ticket you have to go to the theater. You have to give them the credit card injured driver's license in order to get your tickets. Mark but he think about what that does to the process of getting in the theater. But it's like I almost like that in a sense because. US having to show up it's a low tech solution to a high tech prop it is you know is it something where look if you if you're concerned about fraud on line. Make people show up that's how you deal with it now. It's via. I just don't know that the beauty just think about the theater operations that will call windows and you trying to get through that process I'm not sure that they have the the back office to be able to do but I guess if they're getting much more money per ticket. They let you pay for vineyard and you could ever but they have to find a way to do that under relatively painless. Way because otherwise it's good to two hours to get people into the theaters here's just a hypothetical question for. How much tax fraud do you think there would be if you had to physically go to an IRS office show your ID and proof reworked for filing your taxes and then it went and like all those late tax forms and everything where they finally 800 returns the same address then they're gone. End and you have a situation where the IRS would have to employ more people and hire more people portrait. But all of those tax fraud with the about it yet as they show up right. That's how you deal with that yes inconvenient everything and I would allow weighed in at. Tax fraud don't know the white guy I like what Hamilton's doing it I don't know that it'll end up. Bringing ticket prices down that'll be. We will see it coming up we will be joined by Holden Lewis from Bankrate dot com we'll be talking about. Parents having trouble saving because of mortgage payments will be okay and that's next for mark insurer match dot com studios. One we're joined now by Holden Lewis from Bankrate dot com to talk about homeownership I Holden are you great. Over Americans become house poor couldn. You know. Think people are just they're they're. Being killed I ran they're being killed side. Mortgages you know I mean it's just all around it's really really hard day. You know what we did a survey we have people. You know there's there's your mortgage payment affect your ability to stay for the future of vast majority of people that yet let's forget that no surprise right. But you know when you add parent of eighteen minutes you know of kissed up to eighteen years old. 51%. Of them said that their mortgage had a major impact on their ability to say you know so they're really really being squeezed between the cut that. You know owning and maintaining a home on one hand and feeding and clothing in educating those kids on the other. Does it change by generation. Is this a problem for. You know thirty year old as much as it's a problem for six year old. Well you know I think well as as far as that part goes I think really the people who are affected most. Really our parents and there were when people get older yeah but they're they're finding it easier to two. To save money and everything and I think partly that because. They bought it how they got a victory mortgage and their income continue to rise and that mortgage payment date about that it. The how much of the problem is related to people. Refinancing their houses repeatedly and pulling out equity to buy. Another ghost or boat or car design. I don't know if you see there's much today but I remember back in the ninety's and during the wake up until 2007. That was commonplace I used to see. Neighbors will refinance their house or get a home equity line of credit noted take a trip to Aruba. That's not been happening much in the last nine years as though is that he says. I mean pretty much stopped cold. Around in 20 wait cashed out refinances just down there they're they're starting to pick up. But from a really low level and the same with home equity lines of credit and home equity loans they've been kind of dormant for a few years. And they're starting to pick up you. I do believe. People have learned their lesson especially younger generations a bit don't that they I don't think that they're going to pull equity other homes for. The only reason. You know no more vacations no more Harley. I just think that people are going to be more responsible about. They're equity borrowing. Told the B the reach of homeownership has been on the decline for the last nine years are we start to see the homeownership rate pick up. I think we will eventually. It's not gonna happen and if you're not gonna happen next year I think you're gonna still be it decline a little bit and the main reason for that. Is that of portable home. Are just not being built. And there's a slew of reasons for that a lot of them are regulatory. And their local it's not something that the federal government can fake there's a another land use restrictions. Zoning ordinances. And it's it's very typical for home builders to build something per day less than 250000 dollars. And still make a profit to what they felt that I think that you will see the homeownership rate rise as you know moderate income people. And yet they find out is that they can afford. Right right couldn thank you very much for your time we appreciate it all right. Holden Lewis from Bankrate dot com do we go into a generation like if you go to Europe most people. Live in apartments good Asia. Most people live in apartments so when I say apartments on her describing they might be owned making ninety condos or co ops yup the date that's how they they live. Have we reached the point now where individual houses are so expensive that. Going forward the norm is going to be living in a Condo or co op. I don't I don't know we've necessarily gotten that far and I think part of it also is we need to adjust our overall monetary and fiscal policy if that is the case if that's the direction we think we're going. We don't wanna penalizes people don't wanna keep going to lower rates trying to bump up home prices if all we're doing is pricing people out of the market. The market is in reg their record territory and speaking of the Dow of course up a 121 points at 20390. NASDAQ is up 27 points at 65761. Have a great day everybody from our insurer matched dot constant.
