This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and show Oksana. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends and plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chuck Exxon. When Rex Tillerson. Was nominated as secretary of state I told you in January that I thought it was conceivable we could see higher energy prices. Well I still feel that way and perhaps even a little bit more hi everybody Berrian truck with you here on a Thursday. The White House sharply condemned a recent Iranian. Ballistic missile test launch and warned of consequences. Including the possibility of new US sanctions in a more. Confrontational approach to to Iran that leaves the ground work for a potential early clash. Between these two countries calling Iran a destabilizing. Influence in the Middle East national security advisor Michael Flynn. Declared Wednesday as of today were officially putting Iran on notice. I don't think Iran fully understands that there is a new share. I don't understand unnoticed means is that enough vision is that it is like double secret probation. I think on notice. In the case of Donald Trump will mean a lot more than it may have meant under Barack Obama I just think. I just don't get the impression that he you can correct me wrong I just don't think Trump's gonna take crap from Iran like Obama did for years well. And Mike Flynn has reportedly had his designs set on Iran over the last 56 years and so this is not entirely surprising. That this is the response that Iran is getting. Iran doesn't resolve this on watch and they do this all time you know we want to build nuclear reactors currently yet. It's it's the same as North Korea it's not quite as isolated state and North Korea is obviously. But you see this kind of thing happening all the time and so I think that the potential fear and concern as they have this ramps up instead of having you know Coleman forces. Able to unifying terms to it to make things work. Potentially you do end up in a situation where there's conflict in the Middle East. And and it's it's not a pretty picture I'll tell you what's interesting about this from just a geopolitical perspective. Is that one of Iran's staunchest allies is rush right. And so you would think that. Trump could call pollutants they hate. If these guys to be paid its it's it's very it's going to be very interesting to see how that is all navigated. At this point because obviously the drug administration has been very outspoken in terms of wanting to strengthen ties with Russia. But you have to deal with the Iranian situation as well just because hey look. That they are a country that is very much aligned in the Russian sphere of influence solid and just think about how Israel feels about this does Israel would be the target of those ballistic missiles one and here's the question is you know at a certain point. You know does the US effectively outsource this to Israel and say look Bibi to do what you wanna do and able cover for. Yeah we'll do we'll provide you with the armaments but not the people exactly well at any rate when we saw the story the story broke yesterday. And oil immediately gained in price oil trading right now I've got it 5443. Seconds in with your pride in that ballpark. The later in the show though we're gonna do stories on how there's a glut of oil and a glut of gasoline so it's counter intuitive. But right now oil trading at 5443. We have a poll question today in only a couple questions everyday on the financial exchange just go to our website financial exchange showed dot com. Do you think Donald Trump will respond militarily. To Iran before year end. It's a long way to go green at eleven months left in the year do you think Donald Trump will respond in a militarily. In a military fashion to Iran prior to year and our tax number 68680. Our website departs participate in our poll is financial exchange showed dot com. The Fed's bond portfolio is growing up and that means less support for the economy. Chuck you were on record yesterday as saying that you thought there'd be two interest rate hikes during calendar year 2017 I think. Most economists. Would agree if you. But the effect of letting our bond portfolio mature. Could equate to an additional two interest rate hikes that's confusing for a lot of pedestrian listeners. Yeah it it is and and we have the kind of been back to what's happened over the last 78 years since the financial crisis. And let's talk a little bit about what the Fed did during that time you may have heard. The Fed on three separate occasions in gauged in what is called quantitative you right now okay what quantitative easing is. For those you'll aren't familiar with that the Fed goes and they buy bonds from investors and give investors cash for those bonds knew about how they were buying predominately long term bonds as I understand the average maturity they were buying was generally between about seven in ten years. And what they were buying up was largely US treasuries and mortgage backed securities that's that's what they were buying into what was the impact of those purchases would what was the impact on interest rates when the Fed did that. What it does when bond demand goes up and bond prices go up bond yields come down the Fed did this to try to bring down bond yields and the reason for that is because it makes it cheaper to borrow now connect that's so it could borrow money for mortgages at three and a quarter in three and a half percent right exactly so get those mortgage rates down to where they've been really for the last four to five years quantitative easing. Is that process. So is she now is the Fed is sitting on about four trillion dollars. In bonds various different times they've got about two trillion in not treasury bonds another one and half trillion. In some mortgage backed securities and that gets mother bonds kicking around as well. Now okay. What is happened is that gradually you know the Fed has bought all these bonds they haven't bought any new ones in the two years now case it's been two years since the last time the Fed expanded its balance sheet. And so what happens is those bonds as they used to be seven years to maturity. Now all of a sudden their 65 and for what the Fed is doing is as those bonds mature. They're not going out in buying longer seven to ten year treasuries they're buying short term ones and the reason for that is because they're letting that longer and of the yield curve. Rise a little bit and well. And that's I think it's important that people understand what this means because. You might think we and we communicated this week told. We think that interest rates are gonna go up two times this year. But at the end of next year you could see mortgage rates up 411 half percent. Dead you you really could because what this does this push up rates on the back and be met ten to fifteen year range and that's really where the thirty year mortgage typically is based off. Then so. You know you take a look at this and the Fed is has also said hey at some point we wanna start selling off some of these answers to they've said look we don't want to carry a four trillion dollar balance sheet forever never been this large and I'll tell you what. You know for all the people that are concerned about inflation you know potentially if you do see a bunch of extra spending coming and so forth. If you're concerned about inflation the one thing that should give you little bit of hope against that I think. Is that the Fed does have this balance sheet that they can sell off into that inflation which they've never really had the ability to do pre. So they've got some tools at their disposal to fight inflation if they need to to this point. We haven't seen it. But I do think you have to recognize this folks as another. Impetus this is gonna provide more. Fuel on the fire if you will for rising interest rates and what do I say that when I mention it. What's important to those of you were thinking about refinancing. It's important to those families that are thinking about buying a house you might be thinking well will buy a house next year trucks made that statement we're put off for a week to buy a place. Well understand. By waiting to buy a place you could be. Facing and significantly higher interest rate an extra 1%. On thirty year mortgage increases your payment by a substantial. Now one could then argue I guess the flip side that would be that the housing prices wouldn't escalade is rapidly. Right it if it mortgage rates became higher correct. This is a situation where again in the Fed is not gonna do anything. I don't think the Fed is going to jump at a chance to sell off their bonds and so forth to do that just because this fed has been so conservative about raising doubts they have been so balanced and so I think over conservative in some cases because they didn't want a repeat of what he's on the 1930s where they raise rates too quickly coming out of the depression and pretty much through the country right back in the one before World War II when every street but didn't erase taxes as well. They would there was an awful lot that happened that was wrong and the combination of raising taxes and raising rates the same time who is the economy if done it doesn't do good things for an economy I'll tell you that no editor doesn't. Haywood we come back where it talked to will Connors from the Wall Street Journal here's the headline. Cities in the midwest in the Rust Belt say they need immigrants some Republican and democratic. Leaders cite the need for new residents and workers. As former in the as the former industrial region loses population so it's an actually story it was posted in the Wall Street Journal couple days ago. So why the mid western states concerned about the travel and immigration day. Well actually that started about out there concern. The band is heeding the flow of immigrants and refugees who there region the to the major cities in erupt dominant last. A lot of that is. And Ohio in the began in the and Candice. Have been created programs to make it easier upper eighties immigrant would go to the Clinton. Because they've been losing population thirty years. And they need to that you knew you didn't bill job. What kind of jobs are available out there that the these immigrants are taking. All for example in candidate they have a lot of meat packing yeah facilities included some of the biggest in the country. And those jobs in their eighties we'll go to Latino immigrant. That America. And then more recently in the ninety's and 2000 that dot immigrant problem. The Middle East and East Africa that the big. Somalia not big but relatively big Somalia's population. Central candidates whatever you want to meat processing facilities. How of these immigrants been assimilating in these midwestern town. While Clinton like that in Canada than in Michigan where they've been coming bird decade. They've assimilated just aren't like anybody else. And Michigan and others. A pretty robust Middle Eastern community. The Syrian immigrant have been to a mean of moving to. Roland southeastern Michigan her I think you know fifty years. So they have a pretty strong. Community there spread out you know in the cities and suburbs. Obviously the the reason for the travel ban on the seven countries though was that. It was perceived that immigrants or from some of these countries were terrorists. Yeah but that's not really borne out by the back. I have the numbers in the in the article but the the seven affected countries have not been urged all wore a lark who added back that they get miniscule percentage of violent attacks and not eleven. Yeah I I did I detect that in the in the article on looking for here it is. Since 9/11 there'd been a 180 people charged with Yi Yi hottest. Terrorism related crimes in the US. Eleven were identified from being from Syria or one of the their countries that are on the travel ban. This all seems like the travel ban is misdirected in terms of the countries that it's going after. Yes you could say that they got that a lot of the group of them banded that it is. I'm not. Early out early not vetted list. Security expert. You know I'd that department on a security order in the military and those several bushels of those departments have put it that the ban already publicly. Right right Iowa thank god and use some more of the information in here but I know you're on the road so well Ali go but thank you very much for joining us we'll appreciate it. Chuck I I'm just going from the article here. But there are estimated 90000. Syrian immigrants in the United States 11% of those. Our business owners so they come from Syria and they start businesses. Three vs 3% of US born citizens. And then big it goes on to save the median annual wage for Syrian immigrant is 52000 dollars vs 45000 dollar for US foreign workers. Yes I mean you start to dig into some of those statistics. And obviously you understand the need for security but this is why I think a lot of people that this ban and said well look what. What are we actually do wing when we put it in place here in is it going to have the impact that we want brightness that's. That I think is one of the big things as you try to navigate this. And and look again I'm someone who. And I was not in favor of this band going into effect at thought it was rolled out terribly I thought it disrupted lives in a way that didn't that it didn't need to. And here you see some of the data that backs up that hey you had a lot of these. Immigrants that came into the US that. But they weren't necessarily. You know whipping off the welfare rolls and so forth rather they were starting businesses at four times the rate that US citizens now. Nancy it is interesting perspective on a big. The administration will change their position on that. They'll do it quietly and that'll look weak but I think they'll change their position you you've already seen a up pivot actually it was today. Rather late yesterday a shift in how they were handling our green card holders and so forth ray allowing them the ability. To move in transit that's one of those things that look if you that the executive order properly and you don't mess that up to begin. Hey yeah yesterday we talked about the H one B visa program. And the there was an executive order. To reexamine. That visa program still don't know what that fully means but AD if it sounds like. The there's a recognition a broad based recognition. That there is substantial abuse on the twenty these. And it's it's on both sides we were talking about a story from I think it was the New York Times yesterday where you had both Democrats and Republicans saying look the H one B visa program. It's broken. It is not doing what it's supposed to do in it simply is not kept up with the times where we are today and you know one of the ideas that I found interesting in the the tent shall. Revisions to it is say instead of just saying you have to pay 60000 dollars and then doing an open lottery. Habit you waited based on how much companies are willing to pace over Google wants to pay someone to come in and work on a project and instead of just saying hey will pay 60000 and enter random lottery yeah I know you have to bid against your other companies in order to try to get wages. Off. You know. I get if this is a complicated. Issue because venue you look at it I think right now the technique you know the tech. Industry has lobby and they are set to stating at their 500000 opened conference. 500000 jobs that they can't fill with American workers wanted to pay more right. And only if it again if it is that the basic laws of supply and commander you can't fill a job paying that pay a higher write off for more panic or you have to offer the benefits that's the -- works in every industry can't simply be knocked over jobs either in its its goods and service though it it can't simply be oh we can't fill this we need to get someone else. It's like if you want to get someone else coming in from another country. You still have to pay them a market right now just what what is a lot of money for someone to remit back to a country that's a lot poorer and that's one of the big things as. You know when you seat that's a big criticism of the twin B is of date is it depresses middle income wages. It's one of the criticisms of the others just that you have these abuses where in Disney was one of the big case that was mentioned on this couple years ago we're Disney would effectively bring in H one B visa workers who would learn from someone in the US who then their job be cut the job outsource back to the other country and so. Well and that's happened a lot in New England you know jobs have been outsourced. To India and you think about how you feel about that right somebody's come into the country. You have to train them you have to help assimilate them because they're gonna be here for a year to. And then all they're doing is learning how to do your job and then it goes back to India for anything the way general the wages differential it. And this is why again that the H one B visa program it's something that you need because sometimes you don't have people in the country with the skills that are necessary. But you need to clean it up around edges in order to deal with these types of situations and prevent either abuse of the program. Or as we mentioned the depressing of wages discuss that hasn't helped anyone except for the taco. Straight. Time for trivia. Happy Groundhog Day everybody were doing trivia based on Groundhog Day we did we learn from Groundhog Day today Tucker. I'm pretty sure that she was afraid of shadows that means six more weeks of winter. 80% accuracy that while just more than little side. In which year was the first official Groundhog Day celebrated our text number is 68681. Listener with the correct answer wins. The 25 dollar gas card. In which year was the first official Groundhog Day celebrated again. He just Texas at 680 succeed at the correct answer you when the card. January auto sales declined. But that's actually good news well how's the good news struck win auto sales decline. Yeah what we saw is that the decline was not as steep as people had anticipated here's the projection was a forecast of an annualized rate of seventeen point 55 million vehicles. We actually came in at an annualized rate of seventeen point 61 so. It's always the worst year month of the year range tough tough muscle cars no one wants to be outside no wins you know we you know in the market for car typically is a lot of people spent an awful lot of money in jet in December run presents and they probably get a price though. You can probably get some deals you also level in eight at the present state sales in February they'll try to get it and kicked off the exactly so that's kind of the unofficial kick off seat you know you get that in the Memorial Day and so forth and those tend to be pretty big times for car sales so. They're pretty quiet month but still a little bit better than expected here. And the other thing he continue to see is more and more companies trying to avoid the fleet sales that resulted in low margins for so many years. It yet they'd they'd Jack up sales numbers. But it didn't really make a whole lot of money for our company. Flooded decreases the value. Of your old car so let's say you're buying something it's a fleet sales type product right. Then there's going to be a million of them on the market when you're ready to trade yours you may be in an individual or not this fleet owner. And that's one of the big knocks on the fleet sales is it diminishes the recently. Yeah it's exactly and so you've seen a particular GM has made a big big pivot away from fleet sales were the first ones in recent years and it's worked out I mean just look at the stock price it's worked out well for the Mitt that they had some hiccups as they sorted out just because their sales were dropping. But you take a look at where they are today. You you can't really make an argument that it was the wrong move. Average price of a car move an awful lot 35000. Dollars I shouldn't say car that you Marshall that is too much it's the other assets including your trucks and suvs too much to buy an SUV today but the full sized a few suvs. They're 4045000. Products average American than we shouldn't be spending more than 20000 on par Derek did do a bit about the math yet that you eat you do the math the rule of thumb that I generally have. Is you do not spend more than 40% of your income on that car you know what they're doing it in our lives on and not like 40% of your disposable but if you're making fifty. Carson cost more than one. The the thing that. They've done in the truck he's now when you finance a car. He used to be five years was a long time remember my dad give me a hard time when I'd buy cars don't financing and over five years is Karzai can be worth anything after three. Now they're financings our cars over seven years. Eight years and I'll tell you I've seen people get into real trouble with those having owns just because what happens is from the moment you buy it pretty much for the next. Four years or so of that or maybe even five you're underwater rate you wore under water and so if you. For whatever reason need to get rid of that car if you need them by a new one for whatever reason. All of a sudden I've seen people who end up in this cycle where you know they're just rolling loans over. And eventually some of got like 30000 dollars in loans and 121000 dollar car and they can never get rid of the they keep its its really really dangerous to take car loans out long. You know I talked to you about our friends at the insurer matching agency and they exist to make sure that your assets are protected and if you're like many of my listeners who own Holman one or two cars. We've talked to forward about this with topped GM about it and talked about Tesla Hoover. There's one company though chuck that clearly has a distinct advantage in terms of the self driving car technology. I've got to think that Google. Is a big part of their valuation must be related to this I think they're they've got the technology and are trying to build car yet. They're building the technology. To drive the cars on a computerized things. I don't know how much the valuations based on this just is you know it doesn't there's there's no revenue when it yet. Do with taking charge for it's it's it's not going to be as much you think now you you look at all the auto makers combined Nan if there's no I just. There's money in it but there's not that much I mean go go keep in mind. Is a company there's a 500 billion dollar market right there like there's there's nothing I just think it's in his first two trillion Google apple or Amazon Amazon. That's that's one goal with McDoogle. In California California's got a in interest instead of rules regarding driver was vehicles the only count only state countryman they require annual reports on. Any types of accidents on how many incidents there were were people I'd take over and so forth. And what you see here. Is that Google had the lowest rate of vehicle errors just point two times per thousand miles of what that which is a lot less by the way folks than any human what that means is that for every 5000 miles that Google's self driving car drives which call that you know 45 months of human driving. There is one incident where human had to take control and fix them. But look at the perm progress is that they made it used to be point eight that was the year earlier rate they went from point eight to point two. I mean in one year to the they're getting very close to the point where they can roll out a demonstration and say look we if if this were the car in the system adopted. By. Every one. You'd be able to reduce traffic fatalities traffic accidents anything probably by 85 to 95%. And you know we. Can't tell you that they're the only company. That has good Carlos cart technology but we can tell you that they're the only company being tested in California and unfortunately chuck. California is the only state that requires this reporting. So you have to use California as the barometer. For testing purposes you don't know with the Germans are doing because they're not testing their cars in California. Yeah in I'll tell you what what's interesting about this when it's all said and done. Is that you know it's not just on the safety side that you see huge increase the other place that you're gonna have to see. Some adjustments is from cities and municipalities that depend on ticket revenue. For a portion of you know be to paying salaries and so forth because once you get driver was cars rolling out. Look all of a sudden you don't have cars running red light well maybe Hoover's do but right. You don't have cars running red light you don't have cars speeding you don't have drunk driving that he. Meet only direct traffic always those problems go away and I know there's some hesitancy in in. You know a lot of people uncomfortable with the idea. Of a car driving itself and not having human there. All I can tell you. Is that look aviation. For how much safer it is to have computers in the driver's mode when over the last fifty years we've gone from having pilots on the stick all the time. The pilots pretty much not flying that plane at this point that they are involved but it is in even when they are involved today. It's all fly by wire they're not actually guiding every surface like they used to so. That's been going on for what 25 years. Yeah I mean in what you see there has not been a US carrier and has not had a fatality since I believe 2006. In that 2006 accident was when a plane skidded off the runway and slammed into a Jeep killing people in the G so. This is you know this is the future and I know it's a little scary for folks. But it's coming in it's going to be a lot. Point two times right now I just wonder again because I have a point of reference for you it went from point a to point to and one year. But then you look at the other companies that are in this Nissan in Chevy. I mean it very eighteen point 50 yes forgot about that and and Nissan was at six point eight so you ought. Am not pointing that out to be. You know. Mean spirited towards Nissan but the fact that matters it shows how much it will lead Google had struck Google. Is light years ahead of everybody and you're at least everybody who's being tested that number you know eighteen and a half per thousand miles what that means the average person probably drive about a thousand miles among without means that once a day while you're driving you have to opt in in order to fix it. Where is Google's its once every five months instead of once a day with the chip I wonder how. You know I wish we knew with that number had to be in order for these powers to be integrated Aminu we've yet to considers. Google is doing this. And the roads haven't been chipped these no special satellites that have been prompted by the government there's no government regulations jock. That it occurred they are working with an antiquated infrastructure. And still. Able to drive. An act not an accident rate but he take over the rate of point two yen or. We're getting a an awful lot of comments from people saying look it'll never work. People don't wanna drive the speed on the well look the the fact is you can have higher speed limits and if you have autonomous vehicles because you don't have the issue of someone having to stay focused on the road now so first of all you can have higher speed limit second. You can alleviate an awful lot of traffic and so force. So I think that when I look at it. You know it it's a case where this is coming and again I know it's a little freaky and a little scary. But it's coming. Like if you can't stop this type of progress because the thing that happens is it just saves you so much money there's so much economy of scale. And then what happened is the insurance industry is going to be the insurance industries and say okay. Barry you can drive your car you like to drive you can drive your car. But your car insurance Berry is gonna cost 2000 dollars a year old chuck your driving an automated car computerized car your insurance is going to be fifty dollars. That's that's how. This type of technology gets forced on new. You might say don't want to I want to drive man you'll you'll be able to but they'll be in extreme cost for a may example may have been extreme but that's how. This type of technology will be fully integrated coming up we'll be talking to Bob Lang. From thestreet.com. He's got to stocks to share with you that is next from our insurer match dot com studio. Well the market is rallying a little bit FaceBook had a terrific earnings report will begin to that story. Rumor circulating that Macy's is up for sale and I think their stock and looked at their stock in early this morning their stock was up on that rumored chuck. And across the board equity prices are up just modestly nineteen point gain eighteen point in in the doubt excuse me and the three point gain in the S&P that's. Yeah another ton of movement overall was a market that opened up in the you know negative territory but has rallied a little bit. But really we're we're talking about you know pennies on the dollar in the broad scheme of things here the Dow up less than a tenth of a percent. Other major indices up you know less than a quarter so little bit of movement here. I'm a little curious about that Macy's store at this I know the real state supposedly has some value. I just don't know. I was gonna ask you the you know what is your I was trying to imagine who would buy me he's like it's he would splitting into two maybe the brand. Becomes an online retailer in and somebody else buys the roasted in the name of a building in New York City I think is worth. Inaccessible billion dollars yeah I mean one Bill Gates is it really is the real state that has the value actual company. I'd say is probably worth about much years. 600 at an easy Macy's has a pretty good day break and will people still like Macy's products myself my wife shops there all done every week and touchy by how old wire to wire based sales declining 5% year over year. It is their notably shopping in the store. But it there on line sales people people like there're there they're prime actually went there three weeks ago bought myself quote. In the story in the store while outwardly you know that guy in the store it was like me three other dudes you know was pretty quiet out there. And he physical stores are I think are on the demise with. The I I've I still think Macy's has neat reputable brand much more so it's yours. But any rate their stock is up four point 9% in the rest of the market is also in positive territory. Here's noticed a lot more dogs on planes when you fly your game publisher CNET. Couple miles one moment. With my mom's one of them she if she's been violent thoughts for years there's a new scandal and hear how works. I think and noted is the daughter of The Big Talker and got a tar Euro ahead on the way it works is if you contact. JetBlue or American Airlines and state and wanna buy a plane ticket under your booking an on line yeah. If you wanna travel with a pack you can. And there's a maximum of seven dogs per plane back in travel in the cap a travel there all time. Travel. I'm gonna have to save you some money cat goes right under the care. If the pay for that right yet a hundred bucks okay Soledad it's a new CD guys hundred bucks. It in some airlines charged a little bit more that some airlines are charging a 125. I don't want to lose. But there is a a scam that's going on it's still works. Where you'd be clear that that hat is a comfort. Yeah. And that Russia suffering talk parent or older Tucker left in the mind and your suffering from throat post for Mata. Stress syndrome. And you can and you can buy one of these letters. It yet to pay it's a hundred bucks it's pretty much a phony diagnosis. Well what you do as you call this number I'm not gonna give you the number of his scam but you call. In the guy's got for you can't hear you they they diagnose you. As pat needing a service to still be labeled your dog it has still to be under twenty pounds this of those bags. But I know I've I've seen dogs that are bigger that are out in the aisle brilliant yup I saw one when I was flying. Oh was down two while my what it. Clinton I said there was a Golden Retriever right in world one or two. Right on the opposite side from main thing probably wait 4050 pounds I think big dog out their wind down you know that beverage carts don't buy the dogs looking up at sniffing and so is in that I don't. It was like halfway into the ya kind of funny the woman kept pushing trying to push its paws out of the aisle the dog's kept moving them back right afterwards it's like. All right you're not gonna win that one big. You that I eat the you'll see these pets the service pants wearing a vast. And you literally. I I was trying to figure out how do you get your dog diagnosed. As as a service animal it's over the phone. 9995. And they give you a letter saying that that dog is an emotional support animal. This is one step above the people that would hire out handicapped kids to cut the lines Disney World. I never heard that although we covered two years ago we did yesterday there was a whole scam because what would happen. Was people would hire out there handicapped children. In that area right. Ethnic so that other families could skip the line at Disney World you know it's capitalism. Wrong. Is wrong about the ninth from the disease it's it's the capitals and I just I I saw that story and who's. You know it's applicable because I wanted to bring my dog with. My dogs to be the best. Of them my former economics professors on TV. Blatche well. Looked at it and made it. Is classes kind of felt like that he was very Smart Smart guy he just easily and does drugs and yeah Lotta types Google TV news doesn't address what. Game there nice tie that's a little loose many days he has not that odd how much too bad he's not Wear pants. There's no way he's wearing pants. He's where in the short pants and shorts. Short of the colts reports were. If he's at its 1910. More states now collecting sales tax from Amazon.com. The only ones you care about our Rhode Island and Vermont they went into effect on February 1 yet up to what 39 states. Now only eleven left. I don't have a list of the eleven that are still not collecting. But Amazon continues to be collecting sales tax in more states largely because they continue to expand their operations to more states and once you have certain size facility. You have to start collecting those they. Taxes like can tell you how to save the money you're paying sales tax because everybody's moan and about the the sales tax. You can get an Amazon credit card. And they'll take 5% often yeah repurchase of so. If you if you live in Rhode islander if you live in Vermont near bemoaning the fact the pace a stacked by the way the rest of the New England states. When the Hampshire there's not a sales tax but the rest of the New England states have been paying for a long time. You can get a five for a credit card through Amazon and Amazon.com. Credit card you'll get the card and you loaded in your count. And every purchase you make using that card and obviously when you're shopping on Amazon would be the only time he used the card. You get 5% cash back. So interest to text from one of our listeners from six three and not go back to the service dog yet thing. Apparently it does that dubious service dogs 603 says can be a chicken so I was down a little curious about this. There is a written legal opinion this is from a technical legal help for veterans PL LC now. The only exception to the dogs only rule is miniature horses. So you I don't believe that you can have a therapy chicken it says that. Unfortunately due to eighty regulations therapy chickens are probably. Not protected. Now but apparently you can't have a therapy miniature course now. So little pony Tucker let's get on this a what if you could if you get can we know we need therapy horse for the financial accidental saddle on what if you walked in like this nasty there peace. Well I would jump off the plane I think that's why the Americans for disabilities Americans with disabilities act doesn't allow there. Now but they do allow for miniature horses if Tucker can you get in contact with someone who. Breeds miniature horses I know some people and we're going to get a financial exchange minister. We got scammed yesterday jurors hear the news. Oh they are shortages make. Shocked went to great let's suggestions he interrupted the not fake it's real that is a bake in reserve if just frozen he he had corrupted the broadcast to bring us this news yesterday telling us there's a big insurance in that I just about had a heart attack I'd decision and I said the reserve was low which is true I was reserve is low. Now. The bacon reservists though we have. Seventeen point eight million pounds of frozen bake it in reserve that's down from 35 million pounds a year earlier did I say anything untrue. The bacon reservists low now granted we never really use it but. That they can reserve is low we get tons of hogs being slaughtered though you know that we go through about 320. Million pigs a year in this country. Nine billion chickens. Every search this last week accidentally hit it expects that this sort of looking up when when you were out. But back part of our day off that is what we are covering though hog farm it's yeah. But apparently the bacon shortage it's not a shortage it's just the reserve is low so in the event that anything happened. Where little below. I feel better is so united so here's the real question. Friday night I go up for dinner with my wife and I like to get a deacon blue cheese you'll have fun Eric yeah you'll be a solid matters it matters you will be okay. FaceBook had a good quarter. Big quarter here FaceBook now is one point 86 billion users explain to us how they need money. Awful books like gave the because that's the I think a lot of people look at their stock in the say. The the seething with the may twenty bucks per user. In terms of their revenue yet twenty dollars user and it's all at Griffin right now that I academy I don't advertise on FaceBook IA so. Is it. My reading an ad that's helping them make money and then there's two different types of add payments that are on FaceBook one as paper clip in what is papered display both. So on paper look at you don't pay anything. Okay or that the company doesn't pay anything. Unless someone clicks on. In a pay per impression. Add if you simply scroll past it in the company gets charged now pay per impression. Is much much cheaper per impression obviously just because Nolan you know every one is seeing it. But a paper click add is supposed to be. More of an indication that someone's actually interest in your product which is why the FaceBook and other new advertisers like who will charge more Stewart's stock it. FaceBook stock today is at a 133 it's pretty much flat and not a whole lot of movement on the news. It's blatant after hours trading up to about 136. But opened up and down a little bit before rallying today. Companies were 392. Are teachers going to be replaced by computers I don't know the answer but Stu woo has suffered. Studied the subject and he's from the Wall Street Journal and he joins us today company to try to hurry you. Glad to so what's our Ers are you starting to see schools use computers. For teaching purposes. Yeah we've actually been news I think that for about six and seven years now. The idea isn't to replace teachers but as a compliment and so that this the goal that I wrote about. But using traditional teaching about half the time than the other half the time the kids would be on their laptops working with software that would put stood. Presley Caylee or listen to them. So where do is this the one in Mountain View California. That dread it sits there with a nonprofit that works with about forty middle schools around the country. And Scott new classroom and so it did that entire program from relies on software. So it's a title and plan for the future take due to the students to like they would normally feature and the other half that time it would personalize a lesson to kids so. Dedicated would like competent. Attraction and your team would get an advantage Nationalists and it can you are you were struggling in geometry or you get a remedial gentry went and so it works with individually with every kid. What do you what. What were the successes and what were the problems associated. Yeah there's there's not a whole lot different quotas evidence right now that that these programs work. There have been a couple of studies from the gates foundation and from Colombia but they haven't been cut comprehensive academic studies. But the studies say that. The kids were using these programs game much more than the national average and kids who aren't using the program to. On the other hand when it went on the other hand to talk to schools that are using these type of the parent it's your problems with that computer glitches at the that the teachers spent. I too much of the time not instructing kids trying to fix bugs and that. On the computer program. Just make sure the kids and computer games. Things like that and then Yasser happen yup so it's expensive you need to give each of these kids computer and the nature that they did not corrupted and that nobody deals that there's a lot of little things to do that you don't think about when you need to be these programs in the classic. You know private industry has been using technology for training for quite some time. And I think on a reasonably successful basis and why is it's so slow to seep into our public education system. Now the Indiana unity the answer is money you be talking about. The United States and mostly public schools bail hello lotteries out of that they don't have. A lot of expendable income to spend I'm going to hardware and software. For this so you're relying on non profit what you parents and kids are looking into the congress con academy deeper side. Pre personalized lesson. Four for kids are in the country. But even that it's subsidized by things like the gates foundation. And it's so bad that the problem is it's the money. So what do you think is this something that's gonna take off I mean you could always do in the private schools but ER we gonna are. Are my grandchildren gonna be taught by computers or my grandchildren. Going to be caught top human beings. I'd have to professor Brinkley about this and I think the answer is that. Computers are not gonna replace bad teachers but they can definitely supplement them. In in the classroom. And it it's but right now we just don't know what the rate ridiculous is it 5050 collegiate Q we have regular electric and half the time and then he's pretty flatly don't have time. We don't know yet because nobody has really tightly integrated program you know look at your community that started proper and that to continue to get but again there's there's no. It proved that they work. At least right now. Thank you very lecture times do we appreciate. Thank you do woo Wall Street Journal and chuck eat just think about our industry the securities business. I'd seen the think our all of our continuing education is computer based yeah. Much of it they gave me if somebody wants to teach us about a a new financial product or somebody wants to get information it's all computer beside. We eat in the old days you'd go to a hotel and it's no room all day need to learn about it concept or trading technique. I didn't. Not any securities and. I mean I do question I think when you're talking about. Education. As far as elementary school middle school high school and so forth. I don't think you're ever going to move to a fully computerized platform and I don't think you should because I think you need that interaction in particular there are numbers studies that showed the socialization you pick up like going to those schools is a hugely important part. Of what you actually warned there it's not just the material in the classroom know is also being able to interact with people without being. A complete idiot. Agreed but. Also a classroom environment is going to slow down substance and are ready to move on to the next chapter right there they're ready to make progress. But the you have the other kids in the class that are slower learners they need more time. Well and schools typically tailor programs each of those groups. Now that it's it's hard to lump them neatly if you get a special kid can really advance did you know. It might be a pretty small clocks that did of this that there's no doubt about it the wide does aid to school app to be responsible for doing all that if parents are really that interest in one go find an afterschool programs something like I mean they don't think K okay. They'll be a lot more automation because industry is now moving towards now I I do not think that you should be just sitting on a computer trying to wore masks. And I I say this is someone who I lost an analogy of a I I love technology used all the time. It would be I think. If it just would not give you the skills that you needed or to be successful the socialization skills is your view seemed to be voiced its its hugely important otherwise all you're doing adjusting their learning math equations but no concept of how to interact with people actually use the information you warrant what's the point. Royal Dutch Shell profit slips to the lowest level in more than a decade let's not terribly surprising in the new look. Chuck we had oil trading. Most of the year last year it's a lot and I guess the average price for oil in 2016. Was probably around forty bucks there. Yeah you sell oil obviously down not in a very depressed range especially in the first half the year where we got below thirty for a number 27 of weeks actually it does rain around this time last year that was February 12 I believe when we saw the bottom on oil to market bottom was on the eleventh I think. And Daschle coming in with 3.5 billion dollars in profits down from three point eight a year earlier. They did seem pretty decent cash flow in the back end of the year in the fourth quarter obviously on the back of those higher oil prices. You know but I think all these companies they've got so much in terms of new exploration and production. What these companies got very very lean very quickly in order to weather the storm. They're still ramping up quite the piece that you would expect we talked about the other day how. They're nothing but money nobody aspects now that they're not doing a whole lot there they're buying up assets but they're not developing them yet. So it still remains to be seen when they get into that area I guess you probably. Twelve months or so away I think they wanna see what kind of regulations are coming in what the overall climate. Is going to look like to. Hope late buys a lot of their products from Mexico. The cotton if you buy I bought four of project to get four avocados for five bucks. I did suit was tedious stop drop shots are there artists aren't all in architect that are bad that's a good price that's all very good per I don't buy avocados. I'm making guacamole for Sunday. Ago but today that that was a good price but. The there's some concern about Tripoli because they spend tremendous 20% of their. Food budget is on tomatoes and likable. It's a massive do you know that each chip poll lace the work you're chipotle restaurant uses 45000. Pounds of avocados a year now and they've got 4200 stores would they do make it good on the con. That area are remarkable there any talk. Oh it's great to pay two or nine for now it's I think that's a little and it's a symbol for. And out to me to heaping spoonful of Glock and I am happy but they. And I feel like picked an apple they give you enough while. You know the best observer depends on the surgery yet you know that it's 99 million pounds of avocados they use in total. An annual basis and they buy the point is the in and the purpose of our story years Tripoli stock news. Trading at 423 notes then as little as 352 in the last year but remember the high on the stock was in the 700 dollar range. Some could argue that it's a bargain at 423. Dollars a share the big question is do they start to bounce back the the quarter. We I am expecting. That quarter over year over year sales are going to increase in Q1 of seventeen in other words I'm expecting. Q1 of seventeen to be one heck of a lot better than Q1 of sixteen I'm not sure they will be. Yet I I just I I don't know how quickly they're gonna get that bounce back Alitalia. And look of someone who went back to them. Pretty quickly despite my pledge to not go to Poland where it away unite with. And made it six weeks so I'm still ordered lunch from them at least once a mortgage I don't go there as I used to it's just I. You know what happened to be honest is not what I love the food. I think Howard feel after he'd. You ignore that part of the rookies like I've realized yet that five minutes is great but the two hours afterwards. It's awful now you feel like you just have this breaking your stomach as the pressure pay for good burrito. And part of the experience as. If I know I know yet do embrace last but I know I'll get a ride the roller coaster up in order to go down but I just I don't know if it's worth it anymore. Electric cars could cause big oil this much damage. He projections that they're gonna be what. Two million barrels a day of oil demand displaced by electric cars by the year 20/20 five outs they arrest gonna happen track. I don't know if it happened in North America you know I have been in China. Won't tell you what to speeded up is if some of the battery technologies that we've been talking about if those start to come to fruition and we see either. Longer lasting batteries. Cheaper batteries work combination of the two if that happens you're gonna see the transition to electric happen much more rapidly. But the thing to remember and here's the thing that I always come back to is how long it takes the US we Paterno. Is eleven years. And it's only getting longer the average car on the road right now it's actually almost twelve years eleven point eight rate. You go back twenty years and the average car was only eight years old why because people continue to try to make their cars last longer and has bought budgets are a little bit stretched. And so because of that but also I think you when you get older. Are you. Buy cars less frequently your your age your drive in 2030000 miles a year. When you're 75 years old you're not drive 20000 miles a year in all likely. No you drive and 68000 miles 101000 miles and we don't aging society. Yes so it's you you definitely you know you're seeing a slowdown in the turn over of the fleet because of that. You know look you're gonna continue to see older cars on the road through this time peers that even if electric cars. Become mainstream and keep in mind right now they're less than 1% of all car sales. Even if they become mainstream you're still talking 1520 years for that week to turn over complete. Now I'd say it was we'll see I mean I there's a lot of questions as to the you know viability. Of electric cars just the other day were talking about hydrogen fuel cell cars in and how they are the next. Big you know. Fuel source for vehicles the United States may export more oil in 2017. And for OPEC nations produce. Why would we export oil when we're still importing. Wood six million barrels today. If you can make money on if if you can buy the oil for thirty and exported fifty now why would you. You know that's that's the big thing is if if you can satisfy your domestic need with cheaper oil in an export the higher cost stuff makes sense from an economic perspective. Tucker you'll be glad to know that you denied now buy and sell we need on the Toronto Stock Exchange excellent looked all right yet man as it gets stuck called wheat it's on the Toronto stock treaty command yet tree was taking. Don't have to figure it I get a lot of questions I would invest in marijuana it's coming and it's growing in this and that and obviously it's grown which agreed upon. I how many stations are they going to have to divest them you know. Well they they are around town boards and about eight radio stations and which side either can be AM or app and you can't have more than five a of one of those class vacation. I believe right now currently I'm not really sure how many. Well DB except for example in baht. But there are eight and outcomes patient currently in Boston when you add that if CBS you know that there were well over any cap. That it will have to get past that however many it takes two to bring them down to. The allowable number. Other markets that they are going to have to do divestitures in will be Los Angeles Sacramento and Diego's camp and just go and see apple. That they've got a total of six market. Where there will be some trading on. After they've combined these two companies how much money do they think they can save each year and how are they gonna do that. They aren't. It table say. About 25 million dollars. Obviously. Terrible no doubt be some consolidation. Internally. We can we can as in the various corporate. And for example if you that the corporation. Had its headquarters from New York to. Philadelphia. You've got a corporate overhead choking baby and there in terms of everything from you know grants to probably some personnel. There are certain. Certain functions where you don't need two of them that bet they're looking for Europe and the cost savings of about twenty million dollars according to what they told. Number radio companies are in dire financial condition their balance they're on the verge of bankruptcy frankly because of all the debt they took out. Ten or fifteen years ago how's the balance sheet going to look for this new company and our column that's being combined with CBS radio. Well I would mentioned it'll be a very strong balance sheet when they get and when when everything shakes out. Com they are working as an. A bit. Probably 500 million dollars after these synergies are enacted now this adapted and acted you know something happens sometimes some things don't. But that's their projection. But what is I think important to keep in mind is that and a comment and is extremely strong. Company on an issue mentioned an arena where many of them have a lot of chat with a troubling balance sheet. In fact while we they haven't reported all 26 team yet. As of the end of third quarter of last year they're free cash flow and a com. Was up 34%. Contact one of highlight of their read porting it at the end of third quarter was their strong balance sheet. With which had a lot shareholders wondering what that until all that money right. And you where's it going to invest now well they've they've just made its next move but it merger. Which will I I think in the camps because. CBS has also historically run very strong very well mean in operated radio station that two really good entities coming up. Somewhat of a David and Goliath story though because CBS's. 72%. Of the new company and Entercom is only 20% yet the Entercom CEOs would take over the whole business. That's right that's right off. Able LP and at this event for com will be in 23 of the 25 top 25 markets which obviously. Why don't have the figures on net. That is world a great question the radio revenue pie is concentrated in the top 25 market interestingly enough this is going to put. And come into this team. Where they. They've had no properties before the distant future right absolutely is David taking on a life. But again it's it's something that he'd be a wanted to do they went at it I'd estimate around this with in the best interest of their shareholders. Two rather than the BI PO that had been. They it looked at originally possibly doing a good luck up. Abilities that India. And they decided that this was this is going to be the best one I would imagine that the EP tax considerations are much more favorable long decline in the it would have been. In any other scenario. Yet they are it's a reverse Moore spank you very much Debra appreciate it. That's Deborah per NT from radio ink magazine. You know they won't alone is many stations as some of the other companies that the stations they own in these nations big stations big markets only three top 25. Thank you for tuning in to the financial exchange the markets have turned negative the Dow down 32 points. And crude is trading at 5385. Will be back tomorrow from our insurer match dot com studios.
