This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and sharks are down. Sure exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about an economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chunks are. Wall Street continues to respond. To the Donald Trump immigration plan hi everybody very truck with you here. On a Tuesday. And the immigration ban went into effect as of Friday night or Saturday Friday night I took Friday night gets announced. Wall Street sold off yesterday and the sell off is continuing into today. At least that's my interpretation of it I see markets down. Not quite 1%. But my impression chuck is that. Globally investors are very concerned about the immigration ban and then when you look in news. Listen to what CEOs are saying they are clearly shaken up by this immigration. Well they are and I think that you know the big thing is that Republican orthodoxy for the last 35 years you go back all the way to the Reagan administration. And Republican orthodoxy has been hey we're gonna give you free markets run your business the way you want do what you wanna do and that's how things are gonna operate. You now have a Republican president who is telling businesses. Pay. We're not necessarily gonna let you hire who you want to hire them were not gonna let you necessarily buy the goods that you want to buy we're gonna force you use American made goods. These are differences. From what we've seen previously. AA and I'll tell you it's a big shift in general. From the free market sentiment that we've seen really over the last fifteen to twenty years I think. You know it it's I think a little bit shocking for businesses would previously been allowed to sourced goods from wherever they want source employees from wherever they want. I figured the talent issue is more of an issue today. Then the goods perhaps others he's only what is bigger I think the goods is going to be bigger so much of what we do is intellectual property to be state thing about the research and development. He unity you walk into some of these Biotech companies and a lot of the people working in the Biotech companies or in the technology companies. Their foreign born here immigrants to the United States. Well enough I'll tell you that that's definitely one side of Opel let's talk about what happened last week where we saw. Donald Trump right executive orders to authorize construction of two pipelines which may or may not give bill we don't know yet. But what you saw there was okay the business community in the two days after that rally instead they. We we think is gonna be open season we're gonna be able to do what we want we're gonna finally have an environment that is. Friendly to everything that we want to do and all of a sudden and afterwards you start saying hey. You know we're gonna start requiring you to use US made steel in these pipelines wolf that steel. Is twice as much as as other steel. All of a sudden you're sitting there saying hey is this project cost competitor and he can't afford to do the project as camp by the Chinese steel it was so we it it really starts to raise some questions then. About what kind of handed the trump administration is going to have on business because you get rid of all the regulations that you want in terms of hey you don't have to do this and you know after that. But avoided doing is replacing it with a different regulations. You're in any regulations by a different name but not really helping the business community to figure things out. You may disagree with trucks assessment. But I can tell you investors tend to be on the same page and Wall Street is saying right now they're a little uncomfortable they're not panicky markets and freefall but the Dow is down 114 points. I did want to talk to about Saudi Arabia never came up yesterday we did a poll. And 94%. Of you say you were very supportive of the Donald Trump immigration ban. All right now wanna ask you why it was Saudi Arabia. Not included. In that traveled it's a fair question and and IE I look at that innate. I you know the gate the reason I brought it up was I read this story about the US travel restrictions are putting Saudi Arabia in a bind. But more importantly. A you have to ask yourself. Why would be not have been included in the traveled did you did you consider that. Well I think the big thing when you're talking about the countries that were included in this is they have in recent years a history of instability. On the political side and a lack of transparency. And quality of data on a lot of the people in their country sufficiently Saudi Arabia has a better infrastructure for monitoring their terrorists I do. That's a good reason that that's I guess they biggest is that they have a regime there that is very autocratic and very on top of you know pretty much monitor everything that people do how do you address the issue than sixteen years ago. Fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi Arabia. Dancing is that enough has changed in the last sixteen years I don't know enough is necessarily change I'm just giving you the justification for when you look at the countries that are included on that travel ban list. It's all countries that have significant disruptions in their political climate right now and potential significant security holes as far as being able to properly vet in track people. That's a good reason hate if you wanna participate in our poll today. It is simply should Saudi Arabia have been included in the travel ban our text number 68680 to a text us. But what participate in the poll is financial exchange show dot com financial exchange showed dot com. Up discussing Boston oh what Massachusetts officials Charlie Baker will be the first sought he'll be about a popular in Connecticut is Roger Goodell is at fox. A stadium. Yet this is apparently for the last six months it has been discussion we discussed in the moved to Boston with Charlie Baker's office and they're supposedly. Looking for as much as 400000 square feet of space and not talking about adds a little 120000. 400000 when you're starting to get the position where you're looking for space. Something's happening at that this this I would say appears to be imminent based on the now that's tough for Connecticut but Connecticut continues to shoot themselves in the foot. You ask yourself. Why would Aetna. The big insurance company they've been in Connecticut since the team fifties before the civil war and it used to be the center of the insurance world you talk about them the Hartford I mean you had that some of the major players in the insurance world there. Boston though not to seven by itself you've got a couple big companies there obviously pretty equal the biggest one. And I think they're coming for the kids in the technology I'd add there's some taxes in Connecticut that are forcing out a lot of companies and I think it's a combination of the tax incentives that are lack of tax incentives in Connecticut. As well as you mentioned the look the talent there are simply. I don't I just don't think there that many kids these days who are saying hey I want to go. And live somewhere other than a major major city and fortune ironically though you could live electric or how much does it make it that college today. Average I think is around 5152000. IC graduate with a 51000 dollar salary. And you moved to Boston or New York City which is were all the kids one ago politician in the northeast right in your graduating class. I am unwilling to guess that half of those kids went to one of those two cities. Or you'd you'd typically the biggest ones Boston. New York San Francisco in DC those those ear for that typically draw a high right so they wanna go to one of those four big cities. They in the cost of living in all of those four cities is probably just the rent a long chuck is probably double what they would pay in rent for living in Hartford. That's probably pretty fair if you were to look in Boston right now in some of the cheaper areas you know work college kids usually live all his life and places like that. You're probably talking somewhere in the neighborhood. For each bedroom. I'm gets out of the ballpark is about 11100 maybe like a hundred maybe maybe 12100 and in that ballpark. If you look at some of these other cities like a heart murdered New Haven. Springfield and Worcester. It literally might behalf that you might be talking like 6700 dollars I mean you're you're talking significantly cheaper cost of living. Which allows restaurants are less expensive and it paid out student loans then you can get yourself on financial footing you know soured mortgage when oil. It it's not in it in the look at it's something that eventually much like we've talked about with colleges where eventually college is gonna have this you know. Wave of kids say look I'm not paying a 100000 dollars to go to level three year tier four school. Eventually you're gonna have to just say look I'm only making 40000 dollars a year. I just can't live in Boston I really want to. I still didn't do so begs the question why is it. So determined to come to Boston I don't think that's happening any time soon and I think kids are gonna continue to want to be. In these major cities and I'll tell you Boston. You know the last 1520 years since the mid nineties when you look at what the city is done between. You know kind of given the date and at the Big Dig making things a lot nicer and then. All of the investment down in the South Boston waterfront and everything that's and I sitting there is a lot that is attractive to a lot of kids especially. The size of it. You know yup a lot of kids coming from college campuses. We think about how many kids graduate from a Boston University not Boston University but you know you've got. 85 schools inside route was 28 what they need get out to Worcester how many schools you haven't Wistrom schools to happen if all a lot of those kids that go to college with a eagle do you Connor with evil and Julio scorer WPI. One of those kids seemed end up in gravitate back to the Boston it's not just those kids that Boston's attracting now it's starting to be viewed by a lot of people as on the same level. As some of those other big cities in the country worse for years it was kind of thought it was a very provincial very isolated city in terms of pay a few more from here you didn't work here yeah. You're starting to see an awful lot more of an influx coming from out of town there's so many start ups here. If you look at the by Biotech sector and also just the tech sector and in Kendall Square what you're seeing coming out there now. You're starting to see a ton of money going through MIT and all the programs there. And I'll I'll tell you. It's it's gonna be really interesting the next five to seven years because with all the construction. One of the biggest things we're gonna have to deal with is all the traffic congestion that comes along with all these people coming in for a look at housing prices to. How housing is another big issue trying to find affordable housing for people. In and around the city of Boston continues to be a major problem. Hey I saw a story that I think we should discuss. The rallies next test can earnings keep up with stock prices were to be joined by Corey drive bush. From the Wall Street Journal to talk about that very topic our stock getting ahead of themselves. Now one could make a compelling argument that they might be worth talk about that with Corey next from our insurer match dot com studios. Breaking business news daily only here. On top of breaking financial news I'm becoming a member of the carries brigade blog on the financial exchange does come in sign up today. Corey drivers from the Wall Street Journal. Joins us now to talk about the article the rallies next test. And earnings keep up with stock prices I Corey welcome to the show. Carrying out terrific so. Your story begs the question has the stock market got ahead of itself or stocks too expensive relative to their fair value. It yet. I'd and that is the question on everyone's mind especially let me start hitting new record high tech began last week and it actually. These important round numbers like without hitting it funny about that and I think he tendered into the tiny country country at the question it's it's great to have got up before. Earnings of companies. I have had have also be well. Well in and you cite some multiples do you refer to something like that priced earnings ratio on the S&P 500 what is it today. Vs its long term average. Yet until I hadn't we wanted to wait you try to manager and it's stock price that has gotten had been about duplicate packets. I didn't price to earnings ratio basically the pipe that didn't stop scored a pregnant. A whole group but without completely that we look at IP 500. All the companies that and that's. And compared them to the prior twelve months. Earnings and right now we're tree that's and 500 is trading at about 21 times but after years of your earnings. And parents to. Over the last ten years and multiple piece you know at sixteen times though it's definitely getting a bit but didn't happy that I. We when you look at bat. You know we've seen this before I remember in 1999. And early 2000 we saw very high multiples but boy they corrected and they corrected very quickly. Yes and I did as. But by no means they re trying to say we're back in nineteen picking and I love that there are other reasons why at. You can have up pregnant and in small well. That's the little else distract our parents spent a lot of folks have pointed out that with. These interest rates so loudly that pushes more people into the buying stock. For any sort of preparing because military terms tying neat okay year chart straight time. Over the summer where I couldn't keep her back into. Right so. What how much of last week's dean was related to Boeing's stock in the death. The last week spelling stuck with that led inside to expand and it is that Dow component and today bad without it try to persuade head advance. Every day. Every individual tax and it's important dollar is spent certain pocket some more and act mr. bowling despite strict than it actually. Contributed to 20%. As the Dow's gains last week. Very good Corey thank you very much for your time your perch. Corey drive rush Wall Street Journal trucks is not a begs the question what do you don't get tax reform I think we will buy I think you're gonna get sweeping tax reform but. Boy I tell you what you look at prices of stocks prior to the election. And then that second trump one and we knew for a fact that he was going to be our next president stock price started to rally I think much of that team was related to. Sweeping tax reform. All of it all and I think that's just tax reform and also talk about infrastructure spending also talk regular about regulatory reform so here's the question that I come back to his let's say out of Canada is that those Big Three that we talk about regulatory reform. Tax reform. In infrastructure spending. Let's say just that one out of those three lets the only get regulatory reform now okay for them if if that is all that you get at the same time that you're putting tariffs in place and that you're requiring American. Companies to use American materials if that's all that you get. There's a lot of potential downside. This market you know trump was talking to the CEO of the Amgen this morning and cocky in her death. And Amgen's CEO says look we need tax reforms that trumps basically out there saying look you guys need to lower your drug prices. And media and I'll get the FDA to speed up the process beauty drugs on the market. But the head of the CEOs of the drug companies are pushing back a little bit and say hey. Yet would we are happy. To lower drug prices but for crying out loud you know don't charge us 40%. Law and and I think the big thing is you look at the approach that. Trump is trying to use on business it's a carrot and stick approach it's look. I'm gonna give you tax reform but here's what I need from you in turns and and what he's starting to see from a lot of businesses. Is they're saying look you're you're starting to tell us he wants to buy American that wants to do that you'll. Well look if you're gonna if you're gonna just give us the stick you know care were not gonna cooperates he need to deliver on tax reform and if you do that. Hey we we can play this game and we can work with you but if you don't you know. If if tax reform doesn't come in you're gonna see an awful lot of businesses that are hurt the outspoken against what's going on about retaliation economic retaliation. For Middle Eastern countries you know Iran. Was planning to buy a I think nineteen Boeing jets knew they could cancel that order tailored it's gonna get all our jets from there. Here's my question do you think the trump administration and the current congress is gonna allow that ordered to go through. Question you know that caused what do what do what if the trop administration as as hell and says hey look this is not in the economic interest of the US to do this anymore. You know when's the last time you saw something like that happen where someone was allowed to sell commercial jets. But then or forty years and it's all commercial ads to Iran directly in in terms of a deal that was that agreed upon that all of a sudden you so you have the US government rescinding. I mean it's. This is why I think CEOs are a little bit nervous is because to this point they haven't gotten anything. Yet there there it promised the lot that needs seed not there and look if you. If you say look we're gonna restrict some of these things that you're able to do you have to be able to deliver on things like tax and regulatory reform because otherwise. All you're doing is beating down US companies and they're not gonna put up with that very well penalty the nature won't receive. Ever have in the past. It. Let's do Connecticut we'll talk about another Connecticut story Connecticut lawmakers. Are seeking a new tax on hedge funds this might be the dumbest movie ever made yeah this is what we've seen a lot of this out of Connecticut. In recent years and what they're trying to do is imposing a 19%. State surcharge. On investment management service fees which are also known as carried interest a pretty much what this means is let's say your hedge fund innuendo making a billion dollars in the year. On. The fees that you generate lets you know humility managing you know forty no forty billion dollars in the making billion dollars in fees Connecticut saying hey got to pay a 190 million of that billion. Over to us. All that's gonna happen is all these hedge funds that are in Connecticut Bridgewater who manages a 150 billion dollars probably does. My guess is somewhere in the ballpark of three to four billion dollars a year in revenue gone all that money. Is just gonna go where it's gonna go could go to New York could go to Massachusetts could go around could go to Kentucky could go to North Carolina could go to Florida. Here's let me tell you an idea of where a lot of hedge funds are going in Puerto Rico. You're gonna Porter really is no tax EU you know how day it works it in Puerto re able to keep talent down there. Now that's the that's the challenge he now is getting people that are willing to go we'll talk more. About Puerto Rico and why hedge funds are moving on mass about a quarter to make as a hundred last year we'll talk about that when we return. Our text number is 68681. To go back to our conversation. Regarding Connecticut and there consideration it sounds like it's gaining momentum as well track Connecticut. The legislature. Which loves to tax its citizens now is attacking hedge funds there are 450. Hedge funds headquartered. In Connecticut. And they wanna raise the taxes on. Boy and the big reason for this the single biggest driver in Connecticut of their government expenditures for the Connecticut state government. Pension contributions and debt payments. OK so you're not talking about programs to benefit new job growth of programs to. You know for education or healthcare and things like that. It's paying pension contributions that were promised that now have to be paid out. And so you take a look at that and but it's it's pretty clear the Connecticut simply over promised on those pensions I wouldn't be surprised this pensions have to be renegotiated some point in the future I think you're gonna look at a lot of these public pensions track. Over the next. 2030 years they're gonna start falling and there are going to be replaced. By something like a 41 K plan maybe use TI Kraft may do something with and guard. But your generation is going to have to to. Deal with these public pension crisis it's not Connecticut alone Massachusetts as a similar problem Illinois. Is is completely upside down I mean you you can find a list is not hard to act dogs I've I've got it right. You're actually and you look at Connecticut's other state pension funding now and it's only about 50% fund so there's always three states that are worsening Connecticut there's three states. Illinois Kentucky and New Jersey all of those are a little below 50% Connecticut is the only other state that is below 60% every other state is above there. You know you talk about the Massachusetts problems but Massachusetts it's not great Tibet's 68% fund it's still significantly better than Connecticut. You know you look at the New England states overall. They're not in great shape you know there there really aren't any of dumb. That are in that top tier aside from Maine which obviously is significantly smaller surprisingly New York State is very fun one of the best it's 99%. Funded. That you talk about the best funded pension systems South Dakota. Oregon Wisconsin Tennessee North Carolina in New York then California is a mastering. California is not particularly pretty its iBook software is kind of middle of the pack California is about 80% funded which I which isn't bad actually 80% is pretty pretty solid actually but if. If Connecticut were to invoke this tax on hedge funds 450 head for a death spiral. You do stay yourself readout Leo is a Smart guy right he's gonna say well we're gonna change your headquarters will headquarter ourselves maybe he wouldn't be. As dramatic as to go to Puerto Rico where the Virgin Islands but if you do if you're if you're regularly have to be hedge fund. But if you're making a lot of money if you could headquarter yourself in the Virgin Islands US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico. The way it works chuck is there's no state income tax write there's no territorial income tax up do you file a federal income tax and then you pay ten cents on the dollar. But so let's say you you've made a hundred million dollars and in Connecticut you would owe 45 million dollars in tax. You'd go for an half million dollars in tax. He did it incorporate yet the big question that I come back to a Puerto Rico and it's it's not something that I have to worry about fortunately. But are the services there in Puerto Rico to be able to keep people there you know is the electricity running you have properly staffed up police and fire departments in those the kinds of things that. Looking Connecticut Egan an awful lot about the state of the Connecticut government. But at least they provide the services that are needed for their citizen you raise great quite points and that is why. More funds haven't that they are moving at a hundred move last year to Puerto Rico. We have to do spend a 183 days there with their doing is they're getting young single people to moved up there and spend a 183 days in the headquarters. So -- -- maintain two campuses even where you have you know one up in Connecticut where it's hey you just you know you work here for you know a third of the year in and spend the other two thirds down in Puerto Rico the hard part though is all of the issues that you rate interest Republican honestly though that kind of approach you know maybe it's something that we should consider because I could see that is nice way to get at the winter weather you know he's a yeah I spend that's been the right out of Puerto Rico OK if I have to you know you EU Buell and do I'll take one for the team right. I didn't even know I I I showed the story to talker this morning it said did you hear that Wal-Mart is scrapping its Amazon prime rival tonight and I'm not sure it's fair to call. Internally how we call it a rival you know it it was not a right there was an attempt to become a rival. On the service was called shipping pass which was excused that two years ago. And it offered free two day shipping customers that paid a 49 dollar annual membership fee they haven't ever told anyone how many people subscribed out of it told anyone 48. I I never as my life as shark heard those yet and pretty much what Wal-Mart is gonna be doing now instead it's just offering free two day shipping. And about two million different products on Wal-Mart dot com. It sells about thirty million items total so it's less than 10% of Warren marks products are going to be eligible under this. And I don't know how this fits in with the old jet dot com acquisition as well I don't know. But any acting as a consumer woody does he gives you an option Amazon is is terrific as it is and I'm. I I use it I promise and faithful Amazon. You know shopper however I also check my purchases on jet dot com and I Altay yet. A vote anywhere from 25 to 35% of the time chuck. Unable to get a better deal on debt that come up with his wal mart's brand if you're not aware of it. Jet dot com was a start up. It you know I was losing money like crazy Wal-Mart had Wal-Mart dot com which. Was also losing money like crazy and and really was not I didn't find it to be very good website to shop on. And so they washed Wal-Mart dot com all the executives and all the workers out in California a rhythm. And made purchases company jet dot com. And it's it's better it's better than that Wal-Mart and and I don't know if they can. It department Amazon has such a head start. What's so interesting is that I was uses the same way that. I've view over competing with taxis is look for so long taxis had this monopoly they would only game in town in the didn't have to improve their product that Wal-Mart did wal marts that hey look no no in touches well there's eight. Hooked a what he can remember Wal-Mart was very much needed company. They put a lot of small retailers out of business write it and now what you're seeing all of a sudden is hey. Amazon's cameras and what people don't want to go to beat warehousing Wilkens stores with crappy relating in and you know slow service and not enough checkout aisles people don't want to do what they wanna do is they wanna sit on the couch. Watching Amazon prime while ordering goods from Los that is Amazon's goal and they do a pretty good job of building a company that does just that. Virtual grocery store which happens to be a real one out there somewhere and you can actually see the produce that you're picking you can point to it all isn't a robot comes in grabs at warrior. You know you see this state they're missing have won that one. That's the kind of thing that could potentially. Get me interested I agree agree your grocery shopping on line. You walked down the aisle and you get ideas he's all I didn't think of that that guy I need right that spikes I need that sauce or whatever might be. That's where. That's that's the reason I'm going to the grocery store today I could've ordered on line but I bought and downloaded the physical grocery store. I don't walk up and down a dozen miles and a seat things that compel me to come back. Or it's just you know yesterday so I was there are odds and picks stuff up and I'm walking through a lot of the poultry area you know. And I'm walking through an SE you know chicken breast buy one get one for incidental and okay great Beimel freeze and you know used down the road so it's you know stuff like that your big. I would do that if I can Tucker yeah you can't I need to be about the area and need to be able to. I don't know if not I seafood it would still be tough if you've got to be able to smell seafood his eyes it's tucked behind the glass would mean you don't know when I buy my seafood idol I don't say oh and don't like it is now let me stop my panic. Here Britain let's start first of the company that I know for a ton of people were necessarily familiar way. And that is Rollins Inc. can you talk a little bit about what they do and what your bearish or bullish on the. Sure of the debate. Have control company. Solid mid cap about seven billion dollar mark up. They Atlanta I think people would actually recognize one of their brands which is be worked and Brandt. So that you see out there and try area around spraying for which are very. That that's what this company guys. And I am bullish on annually for two reasons it's one of those typical purely and start situations where it. Observers that kinda boring maybe a little bit on appealing. So you've got Rollins to come then. They've got a 20% market share their market leader that are highly profitable there are 30%. 31% which earned equity. 17% operating margin because they're they're the leader and they're in their. Is that that people can Senator Clinton on palatable. But also incredibly consistent so this is the company over the past ten years every single order they have increased. Both there there are still in their earnings per share that over forty quarters that during her that's unbelievable. Especially Saturn Outlook and include the the Great Recession at all over the top. Eight years they've increased their profit margin just a little bit every single year which is really impressive. Looking at this company as a whole who are the biggest competitors and is there anyone who could potentially eat into their business. I have to so I think they're they're bigger competitors are really local mama pops. So small regional players that might have a handful of different. Trot and services and work wrong is actually doing for quite a long time they've been buying up. He's these smaller competitors and patting him on to their larger electorate system make it more profitable. And adding additional scale. Let's turn now to a company that people are a little bit more familiar with and that Starbucks. They reported earnings last week little disappointing in terms of same store sales is that a concern to you were you bullish on them to. Started more seamless Starbucks or hair cropped restaurant industry has a lot of weakness. Starbucks 3% paint or they'll not better than most most companies industry but for Starbucks. I hit it middle of the week how long term I'm not concerned about it. If you do your thing that happened was Starbucks the Arctic market first of all cultural. Achieved legendary founder and year out is stepping down in April. I'm not heard about that because you're gonna remain our chairman and I up pretty long time. Experience better earning every dollar and there are CEOs could take over and in the second period. Starbucks Wii Fit their five year plan. Recently I don't what what they want to accomplish over the next five years they're parties do you temper their annual revenue growth. If you're 20% earnings per share growth and to restore count twenty prior outlook of 37000. And that's a pretty ambitious goal but I think they can do it if you look at. The opportunity toward China the way that they're using their membership program is to increase their. In my opinion the stock market continues to respond negatively to the Donald Trump dropped traveled. You know I I've read what corporate leaders are talking about it I've read the reports coming out of there you see you know what it's Jamie Dimon there. Just days those fish and. BB attitude towards it on the part of large corporations and clearly the attitude on the part of large investors like you. Is heard that they don't like they traveled in the Dow's down 150 points in a truck. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the sell off that we saw yesterday and I believe the continued selloff today. Is in direct response to the travel with. I think it is pretty much a 100% related to that just because it's been a relatively quiet couple days as far as. You know the economic data that we've gotten we got a little bit out yesterday in terms of personal income and spending but. It was pretty much in line with what people expected. We got more data this morning consumer confidence came out pretty much right were anticipated. Chicago purchasing managers index was off a little bit but. You know that's not really hugely important report there. And and in general there's not a ton of data that's out there right now they've had some some companies reporting earnings but nothing that would drive the entire market lower mom so. From my perspective most of this is due to policy worries. About where things are going to be going is they're going to be enough coming. In terms of tax cuts and regulatory relief. To offset you know some of these things that can disrupt. Business Tucker yesterday's and we had a record number of people participate in our poll what 11100 people 11100 people participate in our poll list and right and that was the question. About do you support the trial yet you support yet only the numbers like 94 that was in close 94% and yes. They supported the gravel up and 6% said no they do not. Today we asked the question the poll question should Saudi Arabia have been included. In president trumps travel ban. 88% of you are seeing deaths. The nation have been included in eleven and half percent of you are saying nope. They they should not in you made a good argument earlier chock. As to why Saudi Arabia should not be included in the trouble but I figure general consensus is there should have been a troubled. No I I am in the 6% that was against the travel plans that. This this probably a much more important topic chuck you're not gonna have an opinion to weigh in on this but Tucker I'm sure you will. You are a regular shopper act Starbucks. Oh yes I'm partake in Starbucks on occasion how would you frequent occasion how would you feel. And would it change your shopping habits if you could buy that same copy but it was made by a rope now. It would still be the same coffee cans and ordinary I mean I do. Part of the experience of going into a Starbucks. I've always been fond of the employee interaction start arts and Iran into the market Starbucks close and you don't talk to adults know it is a I think it has that hello the but let's say hello. I knew in my book mobile order divide thank you appreciate it but it's always enjoyable very pleasant people there that's nothing notes lately bother me with a robot. They're building out the east cafes in San Francisco called cafe acts and there is no breeze. Rate you pay with a card and debit card or credit card and a robot nature coffee firm and it's less expensive. How is it less expensive fees are fifty cents less that is you know paying. Actual gentleman who did exactly these cafes literally have no human beings interest. I mean are all upset when I told you should buy your big Macs at a vending machine that now you're vending machines different you're your kid buying your coffee from robot does not a robot shelf in them you don't that vending machine it's like Italy or spits out a gross hamburger. You know it's not a good visual meter. Are well. Chuck I would let you participate beaten you've just you're not copies. And I don't like robots are much food so. Your groceries. Act and where you. Yeah where virtual reality that's when guys. If for robot was picked out your food no no question I would pick out my food and then the robot would go actually grab buddies graphic here for William and that's different from actually making it. This is a big difference robotic preparation I'll tell you. One of the most important components of food is law. In robots but I feel hello. Got a ticket you love your yesterday can't compute. A I don't get it and it I really. Easy to use our I know you've. Must've undergone years of therapy he's still under four men RP many years and many years any more years to go I would imagine a sixty was that a robot therapist it. No. They we call out states when they screw up and they make mistakes you know we pick on Connecticut a lot because well they're the leader. In making mistakes that have a detrimental effect on businesses and wealthy people. Maine though I tell you had been must be number two on our list. They screwed up and they are now charging. Residents of the state of Maine a much higher income tax if they happen to make more than 200000 Boxee. Yeah and what they're doing actually is that the base tax was originally five point 8% but on earners above 200000. We take these state tax rate Maine up to ten point 15%. And that's actually the second highest rate. In the US outside of California California's only state hires there. And what maybe is a state that has had trouble trying to attract high income workers and hi ya also the oldest state in the country. And if you're young innovative person you're gonna say screw this I'll move they like how hard is it to move to New Hampshire where there is no income tax. Right at it and you know Maine is that a lot of trouble trying to attract the types of businesses they want to think gain in we've seen that in terms of employment they they really of flags and the other New England states in recent years just because they have not been able to adapt in this epic makes him. Little bit less competitive and they'd say yeah. And and the voters and with their thinking I know most people don't make 200000 dollars years at the logic behind voting for summit that's. In terms of why someone would vote for probably it's always say it's not me. You know it's that's when most people vote for most things no one ever votes to raise taxes on the cell often. You know when's when's the last time that happened. They just dead it's a dumb move. Easy they will be the very people that you want in your state. Are the ones that make 200000 dollars a year or more and they are also those people truck who have the greatest degree of mobility right it's. It if you're making 200000 bucks or more than you could say well you know we can move honey would just sell the house and we'll move to New Hampshire will move to Florida right every. Did you give you can pick up a neo moves up and called today. Question for you guys later football bouts. Sheldon Adelson has pulled out of the Las Vegas stadium played as a screw up the Oakland raider move bigtime. Laughs that's a big time. It is he's pulling a third of the funding effectively network so why would he he was very upset had to do with the UNLV and Sheldon is a big supporter. Of UNLV which is the university there. And Davis. It looks like. We didn't work well so. Apparently Davis wanted to be able to up pretty much have his schedule in that facility and really control lot of it not dealing so much with UNLV for football and things like that they wanted to place restrictions on how the stadium could be used. For UNLV football as well as other local events. And so Adelson is pretty much pulled out saying hey we want today and you have to be able to be consulted on this and not you have. Overarching authority on the stadium and if you don't give us that a puma 650 million dollars. So have you seen Adelson lately G gets in at the inauguration. Now he couldn't he couldn't walk and assistant is that right he's in tough shape what is he was eighties Ferrell he's you know he's a Dorchester. He and Lewis former Algeria you know he made his money there early money. Loaning money on used cars. Are really guys 83 there he. We don't have a death pool but. You'd be pretty good that if you had a death were 29 point seven billion according to Forbes is that right now in Dorchester guys made good. He it in pretty inch XR but he is pulled his money. And doesn't know it is. Yeah I'll tell you what decent chance now that you see the raiders stick it out in Oakland. For the foreseeable future this is I don't know who's gonna be able to come up with this funding now. Tough eight Super Bowl tickets coming down in price wise. These could nobody wants to watch the patriots beat up on the falcons yep price is on the secondary market down about 40% since New England. Clinched the AFC championship typically you see this dip happen anyways just because sellers are under a lot of pressure to sell and so typically. If your member couple years ago I forget which Super Bowl was and there was one where I remembered that. Scalpers have bought all this inventory and no one wanted to buy and scalpers were taking losses of late thousands of dollars on tickets just as they couldn't unload these things at all so. Ability to big cities Mary gave Atlanta's big football town. It's just the thing the overall cost has just gotten out of my control the just the cost of a car. If you ought to go to the Super Bowl like the whole thing that airfares what to people go into the sporting let it yet twenty to thirty grand and I'd like. You know and I'm not probably not the greatest guys to consider for something but I wouldn't pay that for game seven of the Stanley that's what I'm entering the raffle for Matt Light light foundation and Steve before little it was over year whips it in a playoff raffle dot com. Well for apple dot com yeah you can put in as little as ten dollars to put as much 3000 if you want. And if you win you know it probably a pretty good. Place that very cagey here pretty good job shortly. Chirp. Goes through good cause to their worst case is donating money to light foundation which is always a good things go well traveled out of homeland. Interesting interesting US pending home so this is a surprise we we missed this I ought apologize we miss the story yesterday. US pending home sales rise despite higher mortgage rates and despite. Lower inventory laughs that's the real surprise eight I talk to realtors. In a lot of realtors illicit or show. And they will tell me. Biggest problem they have inventory they used and often for sale I looked at my town. And it the inventory levels are less than 50% of the historical. Just hit it in a big part of it is you look at the town surrounding. He's all owe you big suburban towns and everything. And right now at this point it's predominately baby boomers and gen X okay. Baby boomers have been wanting to downsize I was talking to a couple people the other day. Who are saying look I really want to downsize but the problem is I'm not gonna sell my house for 500000 dollars and buy one that's half. The size for 450. Well and here's the other argument that I hear from baby boomers in my life and I've had this conversation we're not gonna sell our house now Wayne and and then. Move into another house for seven years Gregory we'd rather stay in our house we when you buy a piece of real state this is just some advice on duty truck. When you buy your next home. Buys something that you say. We can live in this until the kids are graduating college and we wanna Pretoria I don't wanna move again it's moving now I want I want to be even my next place. Thirty year house that and that's that's a Smart way to do it my wife and I. We screwed up and wanted to upgrade and cost a fortune. You know. I don't recommend it real quick. Barea they just want to correct the it was a playoff raffle blocked or not dock on dog when it dot com and it worked out dead the other current one. Do it keeps me who blatantly foundation in every direction you OK gotcha it's it's Blair or you can also go to White House rappel down to work gotcha that's his bunch of them. Right we've got a couple of interesting stories that we're in the follow up with coming up study. Finds that there's a link in school shootings and the jobless rate. I think it's more recently you think I'd say it's probably. Probably pretty largely related to USA same reason easing US ten year treasury a little bit money phone and that way as well. You know Todd lucky joins us occasionally on the financial exchange he's an estate planning attorney one of the best in my estimation in the field. And a per month spot today I don't Todd. I'm very well there are you. Good good so tied what are we gonna ask you to do in you know fairly short period of time is. Share with us a case study where somebody procrastinated. On doing their state plan. And it cost them a lot of unnecessary money in terms of taxes or. It cost them a lot of money unnecessary payments in terms of the nursing home. You know I got the once for yet more on the nursing home than anything else it's just. It just all it strikes me as an strange it because it's about procrastination I think that's the point. I had this one couple. While doing a couple but one had gone into the nursing home that's usually what happens right. They go into the nursing home and they don't realize. That while they didn't do any advance planning and you know they're worried and emotions are running high in and I understand that for sure. And and so they were told basically that you know here's the bill and you have to pay and it was about how it is thirteen thousand at the time. Thirteen thousand a month yet a month. And and so they started party and and they kept paying for about a year. So you run those numbers and endemic finally got word of the fact that maybe there was something to do it coming. And and I explained to them that would that help the spouse situation. Even don't know advance planning was done while it's not what we recommend that you want advance planning at least there was something that could've been done. 150000. Dollars ago. And and I explained to them that. That we can say you know how further help these thousands living there and it. You know give her 120000. Dollars which is the amount they allow held these prospect keep albeit not a lot but. It's it's something. And them access that said that they had taken around. All our ignored if you will of that 120000. When you're able to buy an immediate Medicaid in new woody and and get the money sort of back up her. There helping spouse. And get him on Medicaid right away. That's how much money did they end up losing it in it and how much money did they give away to the state unnecessarily. 156000. Dollars. I think that's that's not the striking part of me is that not knowing and not acting but they're back. As just a mistake on their part. Was it a surprise like it was a nursing how did these. Did they know in advance that there was a likelihood of a nursing home stay or did you just come up in as a surprise stroke victim or something. You know I think that's one was more of a surprise and it war planning that they or you know it was more of a surprise situation but that was in the times. But that's what we help people right don't wait for that red flag. Just you know you're 6065. And over get it done this topic talked about you know you it's right for you might copyright for everybody but. You know it re educate yourself. Absolutely Todd thank you very much for your time. 150000. Bucks not small chunk of change in only the happens to people that can also least afford it. And yet you know I I harp on you guys to. You know and he would not targeting young people attend a lecture them about saving for money paying down the student loans and and and buying a house and get married and have a lot to kids. When I talk to older people. I have to talk dia a boat. Avoiding procrastinate and I mean 150000. Dollar and just think about. How long did it take you how older you when you saved your first 150000. Dollars. You know we 3335. Maybe you're forty years old before you'd finally accumulated a 150000 dollars that's how much a couple weeks that because they procrastinated. If you'd like to get Todd votes he's guide it's called nursing home planning for the procrastinators. Edgar Allan Poe and his famous home the rape and it was published 172. Years ago this week. In which city was Edgar Allan poll born our text number is 68680. What is the name of the city in which Edgar Allan Poe was born first listener with the correct answer wins the 25 dollar gas card. What do you share a stiff test statistic if you track. In the last 25 years I got this from today's Wall Street Journal yeah. In the last 25 years. There have been two periods of elevated gun violence at US schools 1992. Through 1994. Win the shooting ticked up in high schools and then 2007. Through 2013. When shootings rose at colleges. The researchers note that in addition to having a hard time finding a job themselves. Students may be responsive. To the unemployment rate of their parents. Yeah and it's it's kind of an interesting study here in that. You know researchers looked at and bunch of different economic data to see if there was any correlation. Things like consumer confidence home buying things like are at. But they found a relatively strong correlation here between. Job availability and of these school shootings and it's it's the economy. It's potentially it's again this is one study that you know I think there needs to be some more research done on it. But it it shows that look one of the things that might contribute to the school shootings. Is the fact that people were economically stressed not feeling like there's any opportunity for them Nixon and and as a result the get a couple people who were marginalized and end up. Go off the dependant in perpetrating one of these. Of school shootings in the study in this is done by Northwestern University. Six point 6% are connected to games and the average number of fatalities per event was one. Just under 7%. Of all incidents involved the three or more deaths. Gun violence at schools hasn't become more deadly over time this according to study so. It always seems like it's more deadly rate because the reporting and we just have more reporting we just have yet and he deport. Microsoft. Sets a 2017. High with a seventeen billion dollar bond sale so begs the question. Why are they selling that many bonds in the U looks pretty good I I think Microsoft has a better tenure. Forecast in the US government and they'll pay me 3.3 percent. Yeah Microsoft selling those ten years 3.3 percent bonds as a portion of this seven different tranches that they ended up issuing here. And Microsoft now has issued about 37 billion dollars in debt. Over the last couple years and in general while these are still funding some buybacks as well as dividends and things like that. And by. The net and I don't know I don't want. You know it's it's it's it doesn't create any lasting growth there necessarily. Much but they're using a lot of it for that linked to deal. That they used some of it for that the other thing that I think you're seeing is that some companies are potentially issuing debt now just because they're concerned that interest rates may go up incident trying to jump in front of that just because let's say the tenure bumps up to 3.3 Microsoft net pay four point three in order to issue bonds in the future. So they may just be trying to get in while borrowing Jeep even though they don't need the cash right now in the buyback their stocks fell back later stocks up a lot. Stocks up what 20% last year. Socket rock in right now mean that is sad in a Dell has done a phenomenal job running that company immigrant farm at a job that Steve Ballmer did. Immigrant yet India. This to say and I lift. Rides a wave of anger to the top of the App Store so everybody over the weekend started deleting. There are over apps and the reason for these applications being deleted from their phones was that Hoover. What is deemed to be. With anti immigrant does that is that I was at this I think bit on it I think that this sentiment I got was that over drivers reviewed to be scabs effectively. Who were not following in solidarity with the New York taxi drivers I don't know it's that and truck in the EU you look at it. I think it's more due to the immigrants then the taxi I don't think anybody gives a rip about taxi and. And an opponent I think the odd that the point I was making was the taxi drivers went on strike right at our Hoover did not and in Hoover I think is viewed as a status wholly or not they know not standing in solidarity. For that issue. I agree theatre on so it's a lift your benefited from I don't take any there's instant so I've been to not drive. Stay close to home and now they closed the home that lift the lift needs all the help they can yet what are they about. 1020% of decides that a tenth the size of Hoover yeah no difference no discernible difference between two service Noah I took a lift for the first time over. Over Christmas and it was actually great you know it's the same service really just you know it is slightly different interface. But a lot of times to the same drivers drive of both. Who's gonna go out of business first seers or JC. That's that should be our poll question tomorrow. A company that I write that down. Need for a bases in there. All right who ousted not a big bass goes with I think I think Sears might have the upper hand here in terms of the race to the bottom. You know Sears just that their financial pictures absolutely terrible. Was the last time ID guys walked into this year I can't remember 97. I was I was I was dagger all of you dads and exactly I was I was thirteen years old my dad who is going to market the lawnmower fixed seniors used to be when I was a kid you went to Sears Sears was where you when I was a kid you went to Sears. Yeah that are that were about to hang out the lake. You'd go you'd are to you would buy he'd by appliances TVs like lawnmower TV lawn mowers and lawn mower he'd buy the stuff that's yours. Now he boosters you should be here. Yeah and a tell you is that if this is Sears is it it just is not IE I hear me I eyed that I've been marvelous time. This is a company do you remember after right after the election. All of these retail stocks started around overseers rallied like 15% after the election I was seeing them go. Why like why is this happening people arts and we gonna shop at Sears because Donald Trump won the election. Well since that since the election now tears down about 50% you know you and it's just a company. That their management has not been responsive to the kind of products people want. And what we saw is that on November 23 the stock was trading for thirteen thirty share it is 651. Today it is over 50% down and since that post election run were ever what was gonna go to Sears. No one's going to Sears the companies were you know little years' worth right now. 644. Million dollars that's the market cap on. This is a company that you go back to. Its peak in the last fifteen years back in 2007 and trading for 179. Dollars a share today at 650. So I don't know that Toyota says audit company can never go out of business look at this if you look. Just talking about Microsoft rough but a lack of opted out of business. Well they said let's be careful these to say about GA I used to. Meet people that don't GE stock in the you'd tell me OG&E stock is like owning a neutral for real and they still feel that way no. Or in you can even go back through some of the companies you know you'll get some of these companies that weren't there in a second has been here for 15200. Years you know the the original company at the dates back like 1830. Sears catalog. It was a big deal. Forgot about but I was out at least a week to get this year's catalog new thumb through. Right and he used to be of the buy houses this year if it goes back to ET 8631. Years old. And I don't know they see a hundred maybe a hundred nov 32 I I don't know they might not. Hey I better if you ever talked to a real car buffer car engineer but they will tell you I've got friends that. On FaceBook in friends and socialize with that. You know I'm I'm fascinated with electric cars and they tell me I am barking up the wrong tree they tell me that future. Of automobiles. Is hydrogen vehicles and Honda. In General Motors are working together on a joint venture to make fuel cells in Michigan yeah this is and you. On fuel cells are not familiar with the they are hydrogen powered. The only guy and is a whistle the only Nolan mission the only missions they produce. Our water like literally there is nothing that is dirty about them. In any way shape or batteries to dispose of your batteries to charge incredibly clean the big problem. Efficiency of those fuel cell systems generating enough power and the cost of those fuel cell systems they have not been able to get anywhere near. Cost competitive and because of that you don't have enough of these vehicles to roll out you know nationwide. Hydrogen stations and things of that that was my next question to you because. Yes he's the technology works its clean everybody that you talk to as an engineer they love it. But the cost of distributing hydrogen a million bucks not just distributing the producing incident that the process by which you typically see it. At this point is there something known as electoral losses were pretty much you run electric current through water it splits in a hydrogen and oxygen and you take the hydrogen and there you go. Problem is its energy intensive and it's expensive to do that right now and nodding like I understand what he's not and until you find easier processor as the cost isn't coming down. And this is why what fuel cell technology. It's it's a beautiful technology I just don't know if it's ready for prime time. But Toyota is made big bet on it over in Japan in GM and Honda spent a little cashier to see if they can develop something in the U what's right. Up next we'll have the answer in the winner of our trivia contest to announce it will be joined by Claussen bell. From Bankrate dot com how much does it cost to raise a kid the answer is a lot. Well will be a little more specific than that when we return from our insurer match dot com Steve. And Barry Armstrong and chuck is not a talking about business financing your wallet. I'm through my child raising years but the two gentlemen I work with our jobs and started when they look at. Well we did an excellent pole to ask people what their estimates that the cost of raising a child through that first year awards. And the advertisement was actually a little over 2.4 thousand dollars. That seems hard to imagine date they. I know diapers are expensive but how can a cost that much to raise an infant. What are being out and into the US you actually put out there on their own investment. Of the cost earlier this year. And their number was pulled under thirteen thousand dollars so. And against the American ticket costs about double. Armed and so there's a graduate to reduce economic data in people McGill the disconnected from the data cost of raising a child. Or you can do that yet or you could you do this in the people a crime. Capital white they're looking at a winery Acosta is not just be out of pocket costs yet to consider it's also lost income which it can be huge number of people. OK so you're you're looking at perhaps the cost of daycare you're including that in the cost of raising an infant. Yeah I mean not just that you have apparent that decides to stay home these of that back and cost. Actually content hundreds of thousand dollars a record of their working life. Or you know potentially to you you have a lot importers importers that don't offer any kind of a parental leave. Arms so dirt covered process there's probably also can be lost income as well. Be Darth Vader we. What are the I don't know if you know the answer is or not but it doom many women stay home now after they have a child her days the women I know seemed all legal and back to work. They mean it really very palm but I would stated debt. He you know we have to consider the cost of people you know staying home but also. On this more women who takes less demanding jobs. Column than it normally would do armed with a child you and so we get those jobs may potentially pay less than it actually and number of studies that show that we. You add everything up on lost salary. You know lower salaried jobs like and also. Missed retirement contributions then work district or social the first Social Security army the second potentially 200000 dollar to the course of you know persons working on. Lot of money lot of money out of it. Thank you very much appreciate your time cost. Cost bell Bankrate dot com truck with your peer group deaths would use the in terms of women going back to work. To this point out of the ones that have had children in the all but one have gone back to work on him. Yet that's abnormal buy it historically that you go back to. When I was a kid in the sixties or when you were being. Well the other thing I will say is most of my friends who have had children to this point we have one at this and so if they get to a point where they have two or three. One and one of the spouses may choose to not work just as it still is cheaper to do that and pay for child care what you do child care for three to four kids were you can't do your be your better off staying home exactly. Child care in Massachusetts. As I understand it. Is among the most expensive in the country and it's because of with if you talk to. Child worker David daycare providers who plays the regulations in Massachusetts are excessive and actually got the cost broken down in the state by state basis a few weeks Massachusetts the average cost for child care is 161430. Dollars a year that's one kid folks that one kid. In Rhode Island it's 121075. About New Hampshire New Hampshire it is 111700. Maine it's 9300. Vermont it's 9900. In Connecticut that's 121900. So it has to do with the number of staff. That the daycare providers are required to maintain her child in masters I don't know I'm not gonna. Pretend to know with those numbers are but I know the staffing levels. And the safety levels are much higher in Massachusetts and they are evidently in Maine or Vermont I'm looking actually in Massachusetts has the most expensive childcare in the country outside of DC you know. These seeds 21 it's 22000 dollars on average for child care. Whereas if you look at the cheapest states. Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana all less than 5500 dollars a year while in and you raise a good point that is why. Women will stay home and they go back to work after the first kid right. The union to the second did the third kid of course that they start to go to public school but the problem is so much time off.
