This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks on. The retail business is undergoing dramatic transformation talking about companies like. Macy's Kohl's. Sears staples best life. In place you would normally go in your car will mall and do your regular shopping those businesses that that suffering dramatically. During the last ten years. But the rate of decline of there industry. We as adults and adults last night I everybody's very Armstrong and John Mooney filling in. The honeymoon in truckers ought to. And John you know we we talk about jet dot com and Amazon.com. And Overstock.Com. Now those chickens coming home to roost and we're seeing just tremendous trauma. That's being inflicted on the goal line retailers are really you know I I don't know why wall. Street is so surprised here I mean this is a trend that we've known it has been in existence now for several months of back several years. You both Sears both Macy's and Kohl's came in with a two point 1% same store declines. Which certainly is not very encouraging they're expecting you don't small gains. I think part of the problem here very whether such an exaggerated reaction here it is. There was such a massive rally in these stocks after the election of Donald Trump that somehow all their problems would be taken care of and now that that is being given up so there's a little bit of uncertainty here in terms of the outlook. And other bottom line is there are structural issues these companies having to deal with and on top of that. Even in an ideal world we are over retail I mean relative to like say great Britain's. Sure we 40% more capacity in this industry than we need so. Even if there was an Amazon there would be a headwind in terms of capacity this is something that's gonna continue to be dealt with. And Wall Street shouldn't be so surprised this is this is just the way it is right now. Yeah they if it is. And you look at specifically. And I don't know how all these stocks are doing I saw Cole was down about nine dollars or 18% a side note their stock was down. Seniors for some reason their stock was rallying so maybe they close all of fiscal Edwards. The news the stock hunter I edit did you understand this your story yeah well part of it was good that sale that you taught just told us about that just broke. Now they're selling craftsman. In which for 900 million dollars boy you talk about selling your good stuff. Craftsman I think is is the thing we most associated with seniors quality. And so it's being sold for 900 million dollars you know I think it's a matter Sears is really. They've had so much of a correction and so many problems that they have their backs to the wall in right now pretty much as a realistic place so they've suffered. Their pain in the issue of Macy's and Kohl's the both legitimate ongoing businesses that make a lot of money in any Wall Street is saying here is. There's a lot of business still will lose so I think there's a lot of concern about their outlook and Sears is just a matter of the stock has been down so much. They've raised a lot of money with multiple asset sales recently. I think is what a bottom Fisher's coming in here saying you know what. Even without its any business maybe it's worth twelve bucks a share so I think that's what's going on here. Macy's closing 68 shoe stores seniors closing 150 you know what I did John was like pull all the stores in New England. That are going to be closed now banger mean. They're closing at oracle opened in 199865. Jobs will be lost there. Then the Westgate mall in Brockton Massachusetts that's a 144000. Square foot store 79 jobs lost there that opened in 2003. And in silver city gallery on Massachusetts 152000. Square foot store opened in 92. ED two jobs lost. You argue that those three up those are just the three debtor in New England via there's couple hundred jobs you multiply that out I'm 68. That's just enormous drop asking this big give from Bangor Maine Jim mentioned. Bangor. Stinger gone down half a bank ideas bottom by the do the people down these together and get a four image of that one. But anyway in anger that the average bigger bang and a that the they're losing at Kmart also. So. For not a big. And then Sears closing a 150 stores including one in Cromwell Connecticut. They're closing one and another one in banger Maine. Yeah Newport avenue in South Attleboro Massachusetts and fair haven Massachusetts you're seeing Sears stores close. So he wants you as well once once in Massachusetts a point acetylene and so you know it begs the question. Bill you know in and it we've talked about it on the powerful in the past we do with all that empty space. That is going to be the challenge is to both a challenge and an opportunity. Bearing we've talked to a Weaver and talk to a mall operator just a week ago. Don't Kingston. Who's talking about you know crude thinking about bringing in a lot of entertainment options. A lot of may be new exciting food options. With these malls have to do is they now have to be destinations. So we'll do commercial business like it go to your doctor you'll go to a health clinic. They couldn't think outside the box and think OK we got this real estate. It's prime real estate lots of people go here it's in proximity to X number thousands of people. What can we do to attract people in having a place for big box retailers with a whole bunch of places that sell clothing. That just ain't the way to do 2070. John have you ever been to a Lifetime Fitness center. I'm familiar with them I've not been to one. A tale I've visited one in Westwood Massachusetts and it is a massive facility three stories and it's like a resort EU we walked in and you have that Ritz Carlton or four seasons tight is when you walk into the place. All kinds of classes. But then very importantly. They have a huge outdoor pool area and an indoor resort so you the other nine months here because the outdoor facilities only open three months. The indoor facilities opened twelve months but is this if it feels like you're at a resort. And they need about as much space it as would be and one of the Sears or Macy's stores that may be where you see any creates a lot of traffic because there's a restaurant in them. There's all kinds of engines and classes in the me is they have become. At a destination. For young families and and older folks like me. Two to go to it it it's a magnet and that maybe what you see come out of some of these malls as the transport themselves to your point. BA team to becoming a destination may BC hockey rinks are good basketball courts or things like that put up these facilities. There's a limited options it comes down this overnight it seems almost overnight. The world is transformed into people's shopping online as their go to wait to acquire stuff lots of stuff. Well it was for Longo people went to a mall to get pushed off. The hit the challengers there's about 12100 malls in the United States 800 of them are doing pretty well based on the the president economics. But 400 of them are struggling. Those 400 malls have to decide. What can we do is it bringing in a Lifetime Fitness center is it bringing in a hockey rink is bringing an upscale entertainment. I saw an artist's rendition of some ideas being kicked around the Hanover Mall. That's a ball was profiled. As one of the more successful malls in the country driven by a co anchor of using Wal-Mart is an anchor which is a a new revolutionary idea back in the the the 2000. They're averaged they're struggling like I counted 1012 opens stores that are vacant including the main main anchor. They have an artist tradition of creating this tree into little mini city a gathering point for people to go and hang out do fun stuff. This is the most have to do what they've got to do a quick is this this world is changing rapidly when it comes to retail. Tucker so what we have a poll question today what is. Yeah our poll question today is have you been. To a Macy's and the pastor have you shopped on Macy's in the past year I for one I went there on Monday actually coincidentally at the head of mulch on. Which you just mentioned and yes I've been there in the past year seeking catcher vote right now at financial exchange showed doc on yes or no to have you shopped at Macy's in the past year. John we guts and employment data this morning eat fifteen we got the GDP numbers and then jobless claims numbers came out what we've learned we learned that the. A job growth story is slowing a little bit it's still strong. But I think we've at where at peak job employment in terms of new jobs being created a 153000. December number eighty. 170000. Expected. Services are strong employment data still overall pretty strong but it is slowing and this is a definite trend that you look back. At the last year and you look at these three month averages of these reports there's a slight decline from you know in the lower 200 down to the mid one hundreds. Also it's better for large business small businesses appear to still be struggling. November was 2151000. Revised down one. There are real questions here very about the capacity of our economy to generate job growth. At these full employment levels that really is the big issue and then jobless games jobless claims came through. And they're basically saying hey everybody's working 235000. Down 28000. Shocking drop but big caveat. This does cover a holiday period. And that kind of skews things in weird ways so we want one of for the number sub but look at the ninety plus week string of very strong numbers. President elect trump has promised to repeal and replace obamacare what are the options on that issue Brian rye from Bloomberg intelligence we'll talk to us about the Affordable Care Act. And the purpose of zero needs to really bring everything on the line between electronic. But more importantly. How did he said it and forget it so what's a landlord has their tenants that up. Really there's nothing that needs to be done until the leases over. The ranks is automatically drafted from the Tenet's account can you choose the date of the month is it always the first of the month there could be the fifth that are that's a sign attendant on the fifteenth could be the fifteenth of every month yup absolutely so landlord cites the initial date. Joining us from Bloomberg intelligence is Brian trying to explain how that may actually current with a different options are hi Bryan Murray who. I'm doing fine thanks for having me. Well we're glad to and you know I think by many accounts obamacare has not lived up to expectations and part of the platform for for president elect trump to win election was to repeal it how does he go about it and what does he replace it way. But you know that's and that's kind of the 64000 dollar question adjusted for inflation these days. You know and it's it's actually going to be fairly easy mechanism. To repeal not the entire law that would require sixty votes in the stint in the just don't have that many. Particular repeal parts so that the key part of a special individual mandate to and to buy. And insurance big employer mandate to offer insurance. But Medicaid expansion and many of the taxes imposed by the law they can use what's called a budget reconciliation method. And it requires just a simple majority in the senate to get rid of that and in fact they passed such a bill in the house and senate last year which President Obama vetoed. I don't know what they replace it with the second part of your question. That's a lot more certain both in terms of what that would look like. And the timing of that so they could for instance I passed legislation pretty quickly in the next month accused banks we're going to repealed as. But we'll make it effective that they January 1 2019 and get themselves a year to have been trying to come up with AM legislative package to replace that. And that's from Europe and discussions that I think you're gonna see Republicans. I haven't felt and they're still I don't think there's a content has gone on how best to afford this time. I think that's what speaker Paul Ryan vice president Mike Pence then the president elect tropical I want and know that. Click if they do if they repeal the individual mandate which a lot of people are in favor of doesn't that cause actuarial problems in terms of the older people that are buying because the older people are being subsidized by the 25 year old people that never use there insurance. Yeah you know there's a couple of things I played there first you're right you know ideally that's how which worked. But back your original point the exchange's board working on the way they should and I think one of the issues that ensure had a need at some major insurers such as UnitedHealth. Aetna Humana are exiting the exchanges. Because it's a profitable for them and one reason you know they they aren't able to charge those older sticker enrollees. Very much more than the younger healthy enrollees and so that put jacked up the prices for the younger goalies and are simply saying well I'm not going to. Enrolled in these exchanges and then left I get hit by a bus and the rules are pretty lenient still in the coming up whatever I want to and so. Enrollment in the exchange of the that's about half of what he expressed budget office literally originally expect him to do but you're right. If you sort of remove that penalty for not compliance. We elect was sort of the same moral hazard type problems so what do you do and I think Republicans have talked about. Tried the money to fund and state based high risk pool designed specifically for those. But again and that's that's I think conceptually pretty easy to talk about how that would work in practice and the extent to which it actually solve the problem. You know remains to be steamed I think that's that's kind of the path was in the go deadliest in the states some polyps sum of money didn't come up with their own own risk pools for those case. But they're one of the questions I have is that when I read the thing about the high risk pools are almost at the laugh. Because that would be literally pennies on the dollar what it would actually cost. That's ridiculous amount of money just missing yet few people get really sick in the state care but don't agree that badges and laugh at least small amount. I it is and you know it when you talk about health care hit it sort of things it's sort of logic and the crack the window. We talked about a dollar and that's involved. But so you know they're they're going to have to come up with a I think each piece sustainable and no way to do these things and again. You know that the box they're they're sort of trying to die and keep themselves and an end and not. I'm not fall apart honest we wanna keep some of the popular parts you know being able to have these protections for those with preexisting conditions being able to stay on your parents' plan until you're. A 26 year old while removing the mandate commonly decode the domestic. Doesn't really work. If he just trying to imply those gaps so. That's that's part of the indeed indeed discussions going on within the Republican Party is. The table they wanna just plow plow ahead and and patch but we can't another single entity for it to do this. We just need to be. Get more fiscally responsible we have been no solution yet. In Rand Paul has come out and said he's opposed to the Republican plan correct. I guess and so you know he's he's he's the I think but got a couple Portugal want from a deficit standpoint and number two. There's also the concern that if you sort of to repeal delay. Our strategy used an old problem whereas I think if senator Paul senator. Columns have been made and a few others have talked about maybe we need to have everything done in oneself. Fell swoop so that you know people don't feel. That's erupting pulled out from under them and there's less uncertainty in our church just sitting here saying well obamacare these provisions are going to be repeal that he would have 2018. You know what what you do in the meantime it has nothing about it to replace it and are still some uncertainty. Not a good signal for insurers estimated to go for the hospitals and healthcare providers. You know they're going to be relying on the stinks so I think people. Whatever the answer is it would prefer start need uncertainty in the coming months. As unpopular as the program news. There are a lot of people who are uninsured bull and who were previously uninsured and destitute. We're now benefit from obamacare and they are very vulnerable and quite frankly they're very vocal class. If it's tough to just say to those ten million people in a unit and happening insurance. Stated there and I think you'll see from a political standpoint those are the folks that the Democrats are going to highlight. On this these things proceedings saying you know we're taking these you know taking troops away from these folks who have no other. In order options and again you know Republicans in the onus is on them they're good dogs could stop the car they've been campaigning on repealing. Obamacare for sticks here they have done very well and making gains and in both house and senate are now winning the presidency I think in no small part to be a popular but the law but what do you do that now that you're responsible. Of fort. So those are the questions that they have to answer Indian and again you know whether these high risk pools trying to isolate those folks and and just swallows them somehow ungodly. Financial figures to do that remains to be fake but I think you know if I think they also recognize that. It'll all work popular. And Donald Trump probably would've won on the election that they feel like I got the political capital to play with wildly trying to figured out. Good good Brian thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. I Bryan Wright Bloomberg intelligence and John Moody died you know. I've thought about this you know extensively. And I come by I just don't see with these solutions. I I think there are ways you could actually work with this in college trump care changed the name in and make it work at one of them would be to change the mandate. So that. Catastrophic. Coverage was the only thing mandated this would allow millions of people in their twenties and thirties to pay eighty bucks seventy bucks a month. And they will be covered the event that this is a 400000 dollar surgery but they would then pay for their own quote coverage and look when they talk about high risk pools we talk but the fact is more than fifty million people with chronic illness. These series the model money that talk about the high risk pools would pay for nothing towards that there's a big problem here and neither side is addressing it. I see a train wreck coming up here. I do too in and day in the you know they're real way that I could see dealing with it would be half. A real secondary. Form of care meaning that you know if you're if if your destitute courier or if you're impoverished working adding. Air difference at hospitals than you would be if you are insured and if your wealth. I think that's always going to be very popular I think that's where we're headed. You're listening to the financial exchange when we come back we're gonna have a trivia question for you end will be taking a look at the final ought. John you and I were talking about auto sales yesterday we are talking about Ford and GM and GM's stock hole Keller rallied sewed ports. We finally got all that does it data through from Toyota and GM record year for auto sales and when he sixteen. Yes seventeen point 55 million units what they just edged into record territory we at seventeen point 48 million units like so you've rounded off the seventeen point five in the in both cases. But 2016. Edged just had a 2015. Big news though because no one expected that to happen we all expected some sort of a drop off. From the seventeen point 48 million unit level. One point that he's been made about those numbers very yesterday is it looks like the portion goes on to break a record. December numbers in the industry were boosted by incredibly. Large discounts. On average. The typical auto purchased in December was discounted. 3542. Dollars. They put a lot of money on the hood to try to move a lot those vehicles and break some of those sales records. Are two people at a great time to shop for cars December there's a lot of incentives for them to move those vehicles set those numbers. Achieve those goals you know. We in the competition. On the auto trader did a web site as though the most popular sub compact car. So yeah there were a lot of discounts. And I that was one of the reasons for the really off the charts kind of conversely my at a bar in sales from January or February is my my guests. In a lot of those sales that you. Get or don't yet in January February and frankly even in the market can be based on whether. Right so if you get a mild winter which we've had thus far. That can actually have a positive impact on point seventeen sales oh yeah act as unit most feel don't need to go out and buy a car in January 25. I wasn't you know there's a major problem with that she and allow them to defer that to bid that's sale with a purchase to April. Things really start picking up in the spring that's when sales kind of rebalancing you're right whether could be a big factor to be considered the fact that. My suspicion is some January and February sales were moved up to December that could be a worth watching history against the first quarter. I was hoping I was pulling for her because she's a New England native she hails from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And wonderful woman eyes she's a FaceBook friend I remember her room from her days back and CNBC. Excellent anchor and she if she was apparently chosen by Roger Ailes to ultimately replace Megan Kelly. Now we should put all the Roger Ailes of course is no longer there he had some issues on the zone. And the feeling is that fox needs a woman and a heavily male lineup but. Breaking news Tucker Carlson got the job we're talking about Tucker Carlson was brought in of course to do the 7 o'clock show on fox. And now he's just been named to replace Megan Kelly at 9 o'clock so Trish is not gonna get that job it's too bad she would've been great I would have been a big fan version. Unfortunately we're in this world of you know millions of channels and so many options of Netflix. It seems like the person who yells louder as gets the attention. And it seems like if you're obnoxious that's OK if you're wild that's good. And you know Trisha just professional and talker likes the hill and likes to argue and Tucker has the uncanny ability to make me. This make me not like him when he's arguing my points. He'll he'll he'll have this person on who's a jerk whose opinion I completely disagree with I'll be watching Tucker Carlson. Feeling bad for the person I disagree. But he's lob. And he makes his case and he stands out and we're talking about a that's a bad move by fox personally I would think he's an old brand built right into your audience and Trish is just you know Trish. Which if you're in the business world you know interest issues at CNBC she was at Bloomberg she did really good. Good work if you saw any work at Bloomberg if you lose. I thought. There talks are at Bloomberg. And now she's of course fox business and the difficulty. At Fox Business of course. Is you know it is the bird of those three networks frightening if they're they're battling and they're trying to do better every day. But in fact. Fox Business lags well behind CNBC and Bloomberg in terms of viewership. But Fox Business is coming on and CNBC is dropping and I've seen some recent surveys and and and ratings were fox has been beatings effect. The funny thing is ironically was treasures of FaceBook friend who who always post you know Fox Business news beat CNBC's. Saturday and later. The show I was doing was ahead of CNBC CNBC is doing really well in primetime put ironically woman that when they're not doing business news so what CNBC's not doing business. And they're doing. Jay leno's garage. And out all the shark tank shark steak which is kind of business but. You know they do really well in primetime at their daytime numbers are really poor and it just I find it disappointing that are real as you said the real true objective journalist. Like it Trish Regan. Gets passed over you know we'll slip it Shannon Bream Sandra Smith but it seems like if you argue and your argumentative and you have a strong opinion. That's most of the people that the cable now wants liberal or you are right. Don't don't rule. Route I I think yours a bigger role for over in fox somewhere I like and I can't tell you where it is. But it. She is that good she is like he's probably got a window of another and give her another five years. Where she needs to take advantage of that paid very real quick we're getting questions on who's gonna replace Tucker Carlson at the 7 o'clock show in that's gonna be Martha McCollum who's anchoring them up morning news show fox. Some Martha's gonna slide into the 7 o'clock show. Now solid choice there to Barth is very good. I think. Well again idea I have my own personal favorites and Trish in only it becomes effective she's in New England gal. Columbia educated Portsmouth native. You know packing up pull for treasury and she'll she'll do well she's doing what he'll put children into her feet rusty will land on her feet I. He lift the list is the stepchild to movers in case you are aware of them. Most people when they talk about these. Ride sharing services online you know taxi services they referred mover. It now you don't not a bad little company date logged. 52 point six million rides in the fourth quarter that's up from 21 million a year earlier so lift not to the alt. Now ridership double from a year ago 52 point six million rides for the full year lift ridership actually tripled. Now lift is paring back some of the incentives for downloading its app in one of the reasons why it's numbers of spike barriers because. They've offered some pretty irresistible deals for downloading the app and and and taking a ride to the numbers going forward I think will be a little more telling. And they are saying they will lose less money this year obviously it's a very capital intensive business spending a lot of money to to market themselves. But again they're also testing the autonomous vehicle would General Motors Porsche reported about partnership as well. So lift again providing a real alternative to move further and a growth industry there's no doubt about that and they're arguing to the drivers that hey you know you can accept tips for us. It's Kosher to do that. You know it's totally it's any. I I've used the lip service and frankly I would say. You can't discern any differences between lift and move. You know if you they're identical in my opinion. The problem both of these companies honest it's like a race to the bottom and they're killing tax industry you look at the taxi business if you talk to anybody who owns medallions Europe fleet of taxis. The they've just been wiped out financially as a result of the list in two. There's a lot of room here though for players in in terms of lift I think you know just like sanguine when you know when Ford was created the region known. No room for General Motors or Chrysler amid I think there's room for both. It in very I think that the the movers in the lips gonna become a little bit more tax you likely to be facing more regulations and the taxis are gonna become more liberal like they're gonna have to drop their prices in the medallion prices are gonna have to settle in. What the real free market bears. So I think there's room for everybody and like us I think I think the taxis and become more real like. In the liberal likes of the movers and become more regulated so there's going to be a happy medium here where there's a lot of players and I think the consumer. Is gonna get a much better deal than they used to get with a taxi there's no doubt about that. We opened the show with a conversation about Macy's in the retail sector and yes the poll question went to his. Have you shopped at a EC's last year 72% of you. And it's usually shop talk a pretty good rough day for retail stocks Macy's and Kohl's getting slammed. Crisper sound chief from the street joins us Chris we knew that malls were struggling but did we underestimate the extent of the problem. You know I think we did. Are these bumpy and I say that because. You know during the holiday tiger and the to a call all walks. When you get on you know. But not at him thirteen weird like that I'm walking around being mindful of where people are what are shopping. Shopping. But. We have to remember that there's a difference between traffic in the mall and at all sit and when I did that. No we did not see a lot of bad for me these polls and a lot of other major retailers. Are yet. Are a tremendous. Number acted as. Let it doors by yes FedEx and the like and it's no surprise they think that once again this has been any Amazon of course. Still most money is spent in store and I looked at those numbers at Macy's and I found something interesting. They had a big drop in items like he impacts. And watch sales. I wonder though I still in the old school that says apparel is something people would prefer to buy. In store in my wrong and that does Macy's just need to tweak what they're doing and do it better to do with more competitively. Well I think what makes it is trying to do is to respond to say. Phenomenon known as show room which you that you go into the store you feel the fabric. You know you try to assured on does it say he tried shoes on owner knows. Great with right flank and people turn around and they will shop instantly online. Sometimes and might be it makes you might be spinning their meat he's been on the Internet this color well like you know with the but shopping online and Macy's and they'll ship it to make. I've actually done that with foot locker you know that that had put up that election should strict in the red and it carried them out of the ball. This is why support them develop the website too because the other thing that you do is go to Macy's dot com. And put an. For free or had a few in the store. I think that's right what I think they really need to go one step further if we look at rather significant. Group was. And we called digital shopping yes online was still still a juggernaut. One that is growing faster and faster taking share. Is mobile so I I think they really needs to double down on normal lacked the odds. Great point out we look though again just that in store business there are companies that are making a lot of money and showing good sales growth doing it the old fashioned way. TJX is a classic example every was trying to copy their model including Macy's I believe it's it's called off Broadway really they were attempts at. Do it Macy's. What TJX's kinda do what many see stuff anyway. Yeah I agree I mean if you take a look at. TJX U Ross Stores in the lies you're absolutely correct in all even at one more which is good old Nordstrom's you know again kind of high end retailer. Is killing it with the Nordstrom rack and I I think what they're responding to. And this is why I think Costa was actually doing well also but they're responding to the fact that despite you know all the work hearing about the economy the reality is. At 30% of Americans who lack any retirement savings Burton number of people out there. Bet I have not seen any increase is and there are you know they they may not paycheck to paycheck but they are. Trying to save review and then get by and I think that specifically that that was. Discount retailers that you did mention. No question now Kohl's is another company that is the stock is way off today. You had a huge run up after the election but the streak was obviously surprised. At the poor guidance for 2017. Are there hidden troubles there were calls that we don't know them. Well I think. Think retail in general you know candidly is is it going this transformation I think they're there it in a the same things which are that would mean that organist with on console wars and I and other retailers that they are in the midst transforming their business. At a time when Amazon you know is continuing to expand its offer and I I I just buckle up early. And Amazon is. Potentially going to buy American Apparel all that business but it also bringing to market its own line of athletic Wear including yoga. He hit it into the get increasingly difficult I think for the rip regular brick and mortar stores. To compete when you can sit on the couch right click click over and over here maybe in day if not two days later. Opponents specifically get on Cole's there are prolific purchaser of the wrong stock they make money they know their customer. Is it a survivor and if so at what price the stock is off today but at some point. Value investors like the stock. Like I think you're absolutely correct you know calm and get that you know. That's why we like cocker as well because they're they're catering to the cash strapped consumers or as we're cold is. We don't have a horrible you know on it but I. But it was accurate and you. The person who's doing it isn't the child isn't necessarily looking to get paid but think about their job. And I can tell you the parent is OK pain and they don't mind. And so what happens is don't just pays them because if you just pay them it's gonna look like a gift. Or Medicaid eligibility purposes and it's only gonna hurt you. If later on you going to the nursing need some kind of a contract between the parent and the child or the on to the child for exactly. Between the care provider in the caregiver. I and the care the recipient they need a personal care contract it needs to be drafted up. For about three weeks. In many view as texted me emailed me called and said hey there is today that they won't hit about 20000. Well fact of the matter is if I knew that a price be retired in Lebanon the person. But you know what I don't know the answer to that and we're here John Moody joins me and you know John if it's funny. People get all hung up on you know 20000. Where is you know I think the yes and he is a lot more of the relevant statistic to 2266. I'd be more concerned about the S&P 2300. Then I would be about to appoint a house. Because it represents over the general economy is doing 500 stocks which represented most of the capitalization of the entire country verses. Thirty arbitrary stocks and it and it daylight today very totally prove your point. Because all it takes is one component of those thirty in this large country to drive the Dow upper down and today. Travelers. Which is the Dow component. Gave negative guidance and the street hated it. Travelers is way down and as a look at the numbers it's a large chunk of the entire Dow drop. The Dow's down will be today but it's basically travelers once started. You know I've noticed the school has really recovered quite nicely and it wasn't long ago were talking about goal 900 dollars. In gold was little levity. It seen a lot of uncertainty I mean we've had this this reflation trade that played out since two election. Assuming you know greater growth in the United States less. Less regulation and happy days are here again. And I think there's a lot of people saying gee you know it might not work out exactly that way maybe there is some risk here. And you know gold is becoming popular because it was created. And I think there's probably even some some some selling of it because it was doing poorly last year it was a tendency also buried the beginning of the year to. To scoop up things that didn't do all that well last year and I'm on the theory that it's it's time to bounce back a little bit. Gold's benefiting who have not in the from a little bit of uncertainty going on. In global stock markets. I would expect that the portraits are coming up to ten year treasury trading at 239 heck I remember talking about that it to sixty within the last couple weeks. It is come down quite a bit to 64 I believe is worth it topped out at. Once again I think you're seeing more it's kind of listening I think we might have over done a little bit on that reflation trade last year. Did you know that too concerned about inflation coming back in interest rates going up much higher. And work and the Fed yesterday I think told us that the Fed is even uncertain about eight. What are the trump policy's going to be. And be even if we knew it what's the impact of that really going to be in the economy in the short one of these programs let's trump gets a 100% of what he wants. And stuff won't even hit the books until a year or two down on the line. So does that make you wanna sell your bonds aggressively now. In anticipation of some sort of inflation becoming. In 20182019. So I think a lot of people are kind of disease take a step back you're saying you know maybe things aren't ready. White we thought. Make sense eight let's talk about Iraq. I've noticed that oil has rebounded a little but I bet the oil traded at 5478. And you don't beat. OPEC has agreed to cut production. And there's a great deal of skepticism as to whether or not they will in fact. Stick to the cuts that the agreed to during the month of December and it's not only OPEC hated half a dozen nonopec countries it said. We too are going to cut production. Iraq being one of the countries that that they were gonna cut production but the have a heck of time doing. This raises a whole other issue that's the one question is as she said. Will the country's you don't cheat that's a position we very little time the issues even if they are being straightforward about this and honest and plan on cutting. Iraq is a situation like many other countries in their case will the Kurds go along with the cuts. How to handle contractual deals with oil companies that operate the massive fields. Will everybody be on the same page so even with in one country there were issues that complicate the ability to start managing production. Well in and this is one that I was unaware. Baghdad. Has contracts with these foreign oil drillers and late let's throw some of the names out there they've got to include companies like. BP and shell. ExxonMobil. So that the government has sold these oil leases to these large private companies. And the government is obligated. To pay those companies right if they say that then you're not allowed but they produce oil so. I mean forget about the Kurds radiate that that's a that's a military you pray that that's a civil issue within your own country. With these contracts that you have with ExxonMobil. And you say well we wanna cut production ExxonMobil says what if if you try to cut production if you limit our ability to cut production. You all its money right. So they're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place there. This this is what complicates the situation this is why oil markets have been very skeptical. About. These promises to limit production if you look at the price of oil Barry's really gone nowhere this year. And it's kind of Platt told and a 5556. Neighborhoods kind of bouncing around there. And it's really just above what I think is really the realistic global cost of full production. That's basically saying we think that this is a rational price this is not an artificial price. And and so yeah there's a lot of issues going going on here and Iraq situation totally shows why there's so much uncertainty. It does it does you know the good thing that could cause oil prices to increase would be is if all of a sudden you had. Globally a lot of infrastructure spending in the economy globally. Picked up like let's say American June. 4% rate next. Now we're counting on growth this year being about two and a half percent we learned that earlier this week and that is the consensus like I had dinner with two economists last night. And they both said he won one economist said he thought growth this year would be around to the other one Hussein would be around three so if you if you do a survey. Well qualified economists they're telling it. Growth at two and half what happens it. Growth goes to three and half four. That drives up oil consumption that may drive up prices that might get you up as high as under 6065 dollars a barrel still applicable adult better than 240 to her parents are. Here's a look at the supply demand game if you increased demand which you do with stronger economies. You're gonna get a higher price I think that that was really the number one reason why oil has been rising. Post election. Is is a lot of talk about in other than the news of the supply constraints and that's a whole separate issue. But I think you know in Harry here is a belief that we will be looking at higher GDP but again put that in perspective. Ever wish I won't make a 456%. Growth. Maybe some day. But next year even good that that cuts for business taxes are probably knock and he even begin to impact to fourth quarter. A 2017. This year. And one of the infrastructure stuff won't even have the books of all this year so a lot of what we have this year. Will be momentum from 2016. And positive feelings and maybe that the chief behind warms to the mid twos which is. What your friends are talking about I agree with them. Yeah you know you look at the the price of oil wonder how much of that is being impacted by declining value of the US dollar. I think that's the number one factor today. Because the IUS dollar has been sliding in Asia markets are saying there again maybe we over did it on the US reflation trade. The fish is signaling uncertainty over what our new policies are going to be. Ian there impact on the real economy the Fed minutes coming out yesterday. And this is basically being monitors and we're just like the rest you guys we see a lot of reason for hope your we see a lot of uncertainty. And markets took down his meeting well. If their uncertainty. Many people to be a little bit less aggressive raising rates in the area I think oh somebody's. Discussions we've heard about three or four rate increases next year. I think a lot of people private leaders start to talk about maybe two increases but the all the reasons we've just talked about. Yeah I I tell you what. I I think you're spot on there I think you're looking at. If we're lucky. To rate hikes and it and I say if you're lucky because. If you get to rate hikes that means the economy is Spartan to recover rate your your that means your GDP is growing and at least 2% in if if if Q1 and Q2 GDP coming in at a sub 2% penalty target rate hikes I think they're gonna wanna see GDP. With a decent handle on it he normalcy to morrow is wage growth. I I think you know we get this big job reports on the first Friday of the month. I think we're gonna get a surprisingly. Positive jobs report in tomorrow's number I I think you're gonna look at that say holy smokes. Things are really start to pick up with the December jobs report that's just to. I think he got a half right. I think the thing to watch absolutely. Is wages we want the wages start going hire more people will be paid more for what they do. I just Warren I'm in the camp and I you can beat me up on this I think. Job growth as measured by the the jobs report each month. Has plateaued. And you probably say I'm crazy for doing that when I look we're we are in the unemployment rate when I look at. Where the market stands right now anything above 75000. Jobs a month. Keeps us pretty much a full employment. It's a lot easier to be adding 300000 jobs a month we have a 10% unemployment rate and we did. But we're at a point right now where we're very close to the people who were seeking employment. Have employment. 75000. Jobs takes care of do entrance into the workforce. And just be careful because some of these top line numbers on total jobs might look like 125130. It will be sale like no we're slowing down. That's probably the new normal here and it may reflect a very healthy job market. In conjunction with higher pay. You've been on cruise job that the only I have learned a lot publicists Lufkin is the I've been on two went to Hawaii. And it went to Europe on these Wyatt tee cure cruises one of the big problems. Is waiting in line. Again. Carnival which is a big cruise company has a new program that they're installing this trying to. But it can only be improved and we're joined now by Brooks Barnes from the New York Times to talk to us about. Carnival cruise and what they're doing to try to improve the customer experience at Brooks RU. So how big is the cruise industry how many people are taking cruises every year. That the immediately about 25 million people took a cruise. And 26. The estimate which is growing by about a million. People a year. But if you put into context of actually a pretty small and analysts say that it's only about 2% and two to 3%. Total they quiche. OK so would his carnal apple doing to try to overhaul the cruise industry know they brought in a couple fellows from different. Right so Disney a few years ago. Did this. Massive technology overlay at Disney World but they keep everyone. Smart band to bracelet that served as your yen. Ticket park ticket now that and they are bringing that. Idea to carnival in away in hopes of improving customer experience and converging. News. You know cruiser that. Coming up with that it that apple think it is. And so. Called medallion in this case it's about a quarter the size likable poker. And deepening your pocket. We're in a bracelet which of course ties the bracelet. And I'd testing like. Open your room door to door to kind of approach it up any thing to magically opened or. You can buy a disease. They compete booed her by that picture and because they communicate. Wirelessly. With ship's system. And cut. It would about the you know the big Dave knock on cruising is trying to get on the ship and get off it like when you pull into port. You know sometimes it can take you an hour to get off the ship. Or more lucky that there are actually be. And that's a big component of that where. There's been telling them where it is something an app is basically what it is that the property broke up out. And they want you to start planning your vacations long. So you load up all of your. People work and your preferences. And that hope and that is that you get to the word. Watered it or wherever the you can have an expedited experience your luggage goes moves through much faster and see where it is done here on the app. You don't have to stop at three different counters to. Paperwork and then of security and checking it is the ship and kind of to go aren't that's the player and if it hadn't been in implemented. You know there's a lot to implement that we are doing it. Million people. But in May they need to because the ships are getting larger and larger. You know you're I think position now where it has 7000 passengers are close to 7000 passengers. And that actually a big part of this that article didn't like it and do. But it. Credible people it was kind of shocked to be honest that they acting like. You know. Did cruise industry has been focused on iTunes bicker and bicker should. That you know and that unsustainable we don't see that as. Being able to continue so what do we do to. Quick step he's older ships in terms of experience. What do we do. Two to get more money out of them basically without. Growing out of it even bigger and at this point it's kind of you know to be to pet into a work in different story but. You know that the big net is starting in the trop. I would think pretty it is an affordable vacation you know when you think about unity taking your family on a vacation. I know there was a cruise from Boston to Bermuda in it was a one week true. I think you could buy that for like 700 dollars a person. It was is pretty reasonable or call. It is there a lot of different. Threshold in one of the big and misconceptions out there is it's it's. More to expect that occur so that super high level. End. If you look at it it's actually considerably cheaper we're able to take it away. Four or five. Crews. India like list that is to go to this. Yet you get an inside cabinets a lot cheaper. That is true and then been suited to their they've been figured that out. And they of these. War is the only. Iso that'd make it makes you feel like your review the ocean it's actually video of the ocean. It's pretty impressive the Royal Caribbean has that I think it's pretty neat thing. Yet the pretty good idea of course that outlook a whip. The depression yeah every president. It's got to do on video. It'll be it'll be interesting to see how they're able to improve the crew's experience might I love cruising I I think it's a very economical way to travel. Might knock on it was how long it took you to disembark that that. And getting on didn't seem too bad it's kind of time that. But disembarking. Seemed like everybody wanted to get off the ship that seem to. And that actually hurt if you book under any. What their plan is here and in the connection to it is. That's there's a big part of that because. What Disney was coping with its system has went of course to increase profits people spend more they don't have to pick up their money. More of a casual thing sure target it was. But it was also designed to under these executives who ran out carnival. To be able to manage crowds that are and the biggest complaint at this hour of this in the line. And so when you're able to connect with a tap in net. These these wireless. Bracelet or coins in the case. They can kind of better manage you is yeah idea like telling you to do certain people to go at this time certain people go to that and they know how many people are coming. Or. Could it Brooks thank you very much for your time we appreciate. It could. It Brooks Barnes from New York Times and you know I again I I think cruising is terrific. I haven't done your two bullet. The the big knock on it is off the darn ship when you pull into does that. It's always takes a long time pay up next heard talk about a 105 year old Frenchman who. Time for trivia what it was a little tricky today feast on. Celebrities that we lost in the your point sixties we're doing trivia on the musician prints. What was prince's re you'll fool me that's a tough question 68680. Is our text number. If you're the first listener with the correct answer to that question you Whitney 25 dollar gas card. What was prince's real fool me. Again our text number is 68680. So John you know just started stupid about myself and you know working out a little bit more here into my New Year's resolution affinity dictatorships all year very good that's a good start. When my clients told me area back on the tape so I have no you know. And then read this story about 105. Year old Frenchman. Who completes 92. Laps and velodrome and I didn't know what there'd be impressed with that or not I mean first of all he's a 105 years old still write them yet which is impressive on its own. But he sports fourteen miles off yeah fourteen miles he wrote in one hour at a 105. To. I kept up jobs at a right place but but strike it right fourteen miles in in an hour and on the right path disguising it. You're almost exactly half his age of your twice as old and you're doing a fourteen mile ride. Robert marshy and does his name recent one we're cycling record. I didn't realizes that there's a category for people under and five and older now I guess he would be the younger person in that category. But a one hour record of of what to do that one hours pretty amazing. I don't think he's related to Brad marsh and of the Bruins public however iffy this fight could. I think he's with the Brad but if he is I suggest the Bruins signed Brad to a 45 year contract extension right now on the basis of good genes. Yes it was a remarkable story congratulations mr. brushed it. So we go from a very positive story to a very big story in this is related to convicted cop killer. It's been ruled in court must yet he very expensive hepatitis C drugs this according to a federal court judge now. This is a Fella who kill the cop. Back in 1981. And the federal judge says. Given that 80000 dollar drug to Phoenix as hepatitis. Yet this is an issue. On several fronts the ruling found that budget constraints mentioned by states. Do not preclude their obligation under the US constitution. To provide adequate medical care to inmates. Now only the governor complicates his various only about 1% of the entire population is infected with hepatitis C. The other issue is as you know Gilead product you know for 84000 dollars per year what once a month. Q were you so we have we are products here that not only helps but is curative shall we know what's effective. The average infection rate note here's here's where this can be a real problem area and financially. The average infection rate among prisoners is more than 17%. Seventeen. Times the overall population and rates can be as high as 40%. In some corrections system so. We're looking at 4000 dollar price tag times. Let's look at 17% of the inmates that's a lot of money. Well let me let me make a point here at first of all your cop killer you should have been. You know death in the electric chair really right that that that lets put that aside. I talked to a fellow that works as a in a prison system he's he's a piece of art. And woody told me because he's here hurt us one time talking about this Pepsi and you know this is the first time prisoners receive the drug. It makes it very you know I I disagree with your premise that the prisoners shouldn't get Pepsi drug because if you don't give them Pepsi drug. Then what ends up happening is they go into the hospital they get a liver transplant in the 24/7. Guard care who it costs us as taxpayers right so you might say it John Moody and Arab journalists it will don't get that day in 80000 are drug. Right well the flip side of it is if you don't give them the 80000 dollar drug. It cost you 500000. Dollars. In liver transplant costs because the eventually would that be the deteriorate to such a degree. Then they that you end up going to hospital and the cost as happened in box I just don't know what the alternative is here I mean that I think the the alternative is. Cop killers get put to death. Quickly and you are the word that. Oh well you know on the moral perspective with respect the cop killers which is a very very small number of people in the in the in the overall numbers yet amidst horrific. But in in terms of total populations. A tiny number of people persons killed cops. So you know that it's nice for that small group. What about all the other people who are in their for tax invasion and first up beating up their neighbor are cheating ill whenever. You know those people are gonna have to be getting 84000. Dollar. Medical bills or that their paid for by the government. Well in his practice it's cheaper to do that they've given half a million dollar to purchase. Exactly so it's been the best of a lot of really bad choices. Not good news there on global and economic and moral front. It's like to ask your question and it's related to those of you who currently imports. It is to date January 5 have all your tenants paid their rent right January 5. They should pay the rent rent is due when I was to land the attendant died my rent was due on first of the month we'll today is January 5. And I'll bet two dollars to donuts many view where landlords still haven't had all of your tenants pay all of their rent for the month of January. Let your in that situation. I implore you to call zero rent and learn about their program collects rents electronically would've been nice it's January 5 in that. Guy that rent the Condo from you still hasn't paid the rent. If you'd see rent that money would have been deducted from his account on the first of the month and who beat sitting in your count sleek and pay your mortgage. In a lot of people they don't understand the their tenants and they show up at the rent wanna get around to it sometimes it comes in on the first of the month other times it comes in on the tenth of the month. Meanwhile you have to make the mortgage payment on that rental property. Calls he rent and make sure that the rent is deducted electronically from your tenant accounts on the first of the month. Degree turn America away yap a surprise a Wall Street lawyer who's representing top firms. Quite a change from. Mary Jo White no question about that. Certainly a step in the direction of less regulation and regulatory relief for Wall Street firms which are the report expected. This is clearly an example of that some of his clients included. Surprised Goldman Sachs. And Barkley says no one of the people. In the administration. Here's what I like about it though you know me in the past administration. With they would do is these companies we do things but he you know when he when he's Goldman Sachs as an example or Bank of America this example. And with the with the SEC would do is they would punish the company as opposed to the person. You know and right I would like to see our laws in place because I'm stockholders in those companies and let's say your stockholder in Bank of America. In an executive at Bank of America does something wrong. Well in the for the last week urged on what's occurred is the stock holders of Bank of America got punished not exactly known as executive who Yahoo! did that misty. But that the stock holders so that affects everybody's 41 K plans and mix there retirement accounts there individual retirement accounts. It's just not the right thing to do end. So there's gonna be a lot of criticism towards this you you'll see it tonight on the news is they all you they picked this practically. Look it if he could you gotten a better guy I don't know that you could Ike I like this picked on him give prompts. Credit for for that like. Well did you think that but there's there's no indication he's gonna crackdown and individuals in fact I think if the feeling is that he's gonna do let's cracking down on on all of the above. Or I don't know and I think a guy like him be you know he think about it he was in the courtroom he was defending men's ice you know drink. He he knows who the guilty parties are I think he's more likely to go after the individuals and lead the company's low platelet. And and witness the problem he'd be happier now on his unique laws on the books by congress that a isles we have to put them in jail there are no laws on the books and company companies are collections of individuals in the individuals who messed up they're the ones who need to pay the price tiger's tournament.
