And. This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and showed czar and you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're simply your world stay informed and up today to promote economic and market trends plus get breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. There are many different economic indicators that you can look at to try to determine the strength of the American consumers can look it. Housing sales you can look at the unemployment rate and can look at wage growth you can look at car sales. I'll tell you what if you wanna look at something. That indicates where people are going and what they're doing with their money and look no further than retail sales because that's how. We all vote was our feet we don't go to the stores and we don't spend money. And lest we feel pretty good about the economy hi everybody it's very in shock and but say what the retail sales number truck caught me by surprise that. Pretty good retail sales number up point 8% as well as not even stripping out auto sales up point 8% both those numbers beating expectations. And we also had revisions up. On the prior month of September by about load up point 4% on the overall number and point 2% when you strip out autumn's cut. But this seems to be flying in the face of what we see for low GDP. You look at. He eat it there's so much in consistent economic data it's hard to decipher why do think that you are likely going to see some revision upward for a Q3 data that we got the first number out I think what was that about two weeks ago maybe three weeks ago that we got that. And I know I've already seen a number of projections for Q4. That have been revised up slightly as well so it does appear that we are going to have. A fairly strong finish to two point sixteen I think you know and and we take a look at retail sales data OK the big thing is you wanna see where you're actually seeing the increased you don't just wanted to being gas prices going up threats of retail sale. But it doesn't do anyone any good let's take a look at some of the areas where we saw the biggest jump in retail sales for October. Building materials and garden equipment up six and a half percent that's that's a positive sign auto sales of five point 4% we kind of knew they're going to be in that ballpark there. Some of the other areas that we're a pro grocery stores up three point 7%. Health care stores up eight point 3% to personal care and CBS or something like that would be included in there. Other areas that were up by significantly not store retail continues to be strong bouncing back from a weak September. Back up to twelve point 9% annualized growth when you say non story tonight on online though online. Food services and drinking places up four point 3% of people going out more after decline in September so you look at all of the data here. For the month. In its pretty strong from retail perspective. And you know must be wage growth that. People we've seen the last couple months in the day don't do they don't behave like this let's they've got money in their pocket no and and I'll tell you that we get what have we got about three weeks to go until we get the November data from if you see a third strong month of wage growth in a row. I'm I'm comfortable saying that it's here that talked to me about December everybody's wondering about whether the Fed raises rates. You've got a new president being inaugurated in January. Have to think they're gonna raise rates in December well I just checked the other handy tool on this toggle mercantile exchange website. And we are now up to a 91% chance that there is a hike in December is so based on Rosenberg's comments. It was even before that we are at an 86% yesterday but Rosen and probably up pushed us up a little bit but now in 91% chance of a hike in December and I'll tell you there's even about a 50% chance that we see an additional hike. In the first half of 2017. Now we go out. And take a look at June okay we only have a 48 point 6% chance that we have not had a height buy them at this point. If you tax cuts right is it. I guess it would depend on when those tax cuts go into effect in China go into effect until January 1 eighteen yet depends on how soon they do I didn't he doesn't retroactive to January 1 16%. Seventeen it would be I I'd be. More optimistic if you saw that I just. I I know how Washington works and I know Donald Trump is trying to change Washington but there's a lot of momentum going and a lot of other directions and I think that it just takes a little time to focus energy. And actually get a bill through. BI I'm wondering if Warren Buffett has made a mistake he now these big hedge fund managers would be here. George Soros who's very secretive or Warren Buffett who's also very secretive. They have to file these quarterly semiannual thirteen quarterly quarterly reports. And it indicated. That Warren Buffett took big positions in four different airlines I think this is very surprising I'm not saying it's a mistake. But I have seen him avoid airlines and I've aborted airlines as a consequence. You know what I'm Buffett owned an airline stocks I believe was what the late eighties I think when he lost a significant amount of money out of preferred shares. Back then. Airline stocks notoriously volatile and the reason for that. Is because small changes in the the amount of passengers that you care. Have an outsize impact on profitability since they're fixed cost a lot when we talk about fixed cost for an airline then you've got deep freeze you've got fuel. You've got your rock contract your pilots and flight attendants all those things are pretty much fixed you don't have a whole lot of flexibility. To make putts. During a downturn so big labor problems and so when you look at airlines they tend to be fairly volatile now. Airlines have had a good run the last five to six years why is that. There's been a ton of consolidation you look at the airlines that we use to have that we no longer do when that time and you know you've seen it just massive amount of consolidation in the last five to six years and really the major airlines that have remained delta united American. Southwest. They've kind of been you know the dominant players at this point that it's that there's not a ton of competition in the airlines based because it's such a capital. Since capital. Heavy yup business you know even had a start capital con. No I'm trying to think of the last time that you had a big national started you might have to go back to jetBlue. Yep they're good that you. B if the prices get too high you'll see start ups jump back in he also did this should concern you fueled shares of Wal-Mart. Warren Buffett is thirteen F filing reduced his stake in Wal-Mart by 60%. I wonder if that's not a mistake to based on the experience I had shopping on jet dot com it's unusual form. It is and and talking further about the the consolidation airlines that we've seen recently here are some of the big mergers that have happened. In the last ten years OK okay. Northwest merging an adult that's a huge one human right north where northwest is it a big airline and you don't at a Detroit Minnesota all of those places get a ton of activity there at the three most recent new airlines that we've gotten. JetBlue yeah Frontier Airlines was about five years before them okay. AirTran was a little before that but they got merged in the southwest of a case of their god continental merged in the united for US Airways and American ended up merging. So I mean you had all these companies merging virgin America is another one and then came out recently but. I mean you're going back. 1011 years to the last time you had a startup airline and pick the level of consolidation now it's left you with. You know what what what you have at this point you've got you know five major carriers pretty much. For regulation is also made it harder to break into that does he did just roll out a twenty year old yet the start there are no it's expensive you you've got to have a jet that safe than. Up to speed the EU IV the Wal-Mart story I was just a little bit surprised by an economy by expressed. Home Depot shares were down despite the fact that they exceeded earnings they beat on revenue and they beat on earnings yet there shares were down. Yeah they beat on same store sales growth as well and they actually reaffirmed. Their full year sales guidance and they raised. A little bit of their forecast for 2016 here. Hope people I think you know particular this is a company that has done very well over the last couple of years but. You know the last six months or so it was kind of the prices stagnated I think with some concerns. Over hey how many people are actually moving in the new homes is the pace of you know household formation happening as rapidly as we'd like to see him and I think that's a question that still lingers out there. As far as you know why the stock is struggling on this news. Maybe people were just expecting a bigger beef milk but you know that there's nothing in here that's really a red flag is down from my perspective down three dollars down did that there's nothing in there that stands out is negative to me. Yeah I mean if you have lower tax rates next year that should be good for house. In theory if Tucker Silva has the poll question today and its related to Home Depot and Lowe's acts. I'm sorry to let chuck you know why you may see it down actually the last couple days why its pulled back over the last weaker so he is. Interest rates move up. And the payment made in there already pulled back that there I was in reports are still north to two I mean that's that's half percent I saw mortgage rates on the thirty year over 4% yesterday banks are really quick to raise them. On mortgages they like every dollar they regularly do. Simple question which you can vote on line on what's at financial change dot com is which you prefer home people close those. I feel Lowe's is really hard to find everything I'm Home Depot got a solid ten minutes defines what a horrible you know what is he get used to a certain store and I have a lows that use less than four miles from my home so I can get their quickly yet singers and and seats and I think you tend to go. With with most convenient. EGE do you have a Lowe's says same distance from your house struck but not quite as close to I've always consciousness and go home just like you better like the orange and the thought you participate in a poll go to financial exchange showed dot com let us know what you like better as we like by the stock of the winning company. Up next will be joined by Patricia colon New York Times we're going to be talking about the Donald Trump tax cuts that's next from our insurer match dot com studios. Barry Armstrong. Son. Hi everybody very Armstrong here from the financial exchange and I'm joined by. Leader bank does a tremendous amount of mortgage loans as a matter of fact I've used them a couple times to refinance properties in the past. Jake how's the mortgage business these days it's an extremely busy very. There are a lot of people buying homes. So that's kept the purchase market very very busy and on top of that race are still at all time lows around so we've a lot of folks who are refinancing their homes either to get a better rate or pull some cash out because of properties appreciate it that's arisen and asked how does somebody know whether they should call to refinance. Well you know. There's really 22 ways if they feel that the rate can be improved. Give us serene town and you know thirty year fixed raise her all time lows. If you have anything in the in a 4% range frankly give us the rink and it might be able to do something to or if you need to take some cash and of your property wondered for college tuition for your kids are you guys have home equity lines of credit we have home equity lines of credit as well and the cool thing about that is. Tax cuts are on the way the big question is what kind of tax cuts are we gonna get it and when are we gonna get them we're joined now by Patricia Cohen from the Wall Street you're are from the New York Times excuse me. If there. Almost misquoted you aired Patricia are you. Good so our our Paul Ryan and Donald Trump on the same page in terms of tax cuts didn't. Well. I think that's actually probably. What is it is likely to come up sooner rather than later they are certainly a window it's something they both agree on if you look at it both they have. Both the house. Republicans and Donald Trump had put out. Barely eking out tax plan there are some significant differences between the two but mr. trump has already been tested that he would let me how to take the lead on this issue. And you know they're they're them. Abroad to elements that they have in common that the the primary one which is the biggest tax cuts go to the wealthiest. What percent. If the what do let's talk start off with corporate taxes though we could. Are the they're right now they're at 35%. And President Obama has acknowledged that a lot of these and versions have occurred because our corporate tax rates are too high. What are we looking at in terms of the future corporate tax rate under trump administration. Well I again both say you know the kind of broad theory boat house and mr. trump patent. Talked about significantly. Cutting those rates that corporate rate down to it to what a percent or 15%. Bomb as far as before he goes to what. It's very interesting about that is that house Republicans really have. Proposal what is it would potentially very revolutionary. A a group which is. Something like value added tax to be AT. Which is the consumption based tax which is completely different that type we have now. And the question is how that would. Operates one of the things that how to suggested for instances that. In activities that type of practice that we have now he we would only tax. Based on. Goods and services network brought into the United States oh. He does it matter where they were produce big beef produced in China Germany. Detroit. But they would have that same tact and alternative alternately. Eight date does it matter where it to do that gets exported would not be tax. So that's been very different upper hand. How whether that would go over and details are are. Still up in the air but but that would be definitely a significant change the kind of system we have now again requested it whether that would just add to that whether that would. Violate any international trade agreement right have is unclear. Yes I was gonna ask you about that seems that you would start a trade war. Well the European that probably argued that excuse me that the actual contained in is like an old Beagle subsidy for exporters and effectively operate its import terror. No you know that the question it but we know that it has already indicated net. He is not that. Permitted to do it eerie to international. Agreement that he doesn't think there would be less than ten. What about the in terms of the year a state tax what does that house wanted to do on an estate tax which is currently eleven million. The way it works is that the attacks. Literally affect about five. Palestinian people a year that. It's really that popped hero we don't do that. Though it ultimately if you for individual. About. But it happened millions for a couple of battles evidently the only here Levy something above that amount is tax break up. Both the house and competent. Talk about eliminating that I think that is a prime candidate to get eliminated. Pretty quickly. Now on the campaign trail paddy he had talked about carried interest hedge funds member of the right that was a big topic for the right front. Would how would that house is gonna come out of the house had as the house addressed the whole issue. Carried interest which is. Just for the benefit of our audience that's the the law that allows hedge funds to be taxed at. 20% or 23% as opposed to 39% nor right income. Right no though and it is this the rebel Republicans to have. You know argued that. Come from capital our investment should be lowered and come make your paycheck. Why but people argue that that's a good idea or bad idea there there argument is that if you have a lower tax. On investment income people or more likely to invest. You know others argue with that they are that. It just you know that labor income you're working your paycheck you have to pay more for it. A higher tax on Mac kind of comment Burke capital in any event. And Donald and Donald Trump weighed in on the side of the income right right knee during the campaign. It came in the case that carried interest to see Condit controversy about that was that essentially you know your partners and heads and managers in that. We're at that usually a fairly converting what was wages or what it'd be counted as wages in the capital and you know both Democrats and Republicans that they wanted to put. And that this is under our plan. It you know it wouldn't matter because. He would cut capital gains rate even below that maybe to 15% that went back. Of those people all the people who are benefiting now from our interest would end up. Doing better than they do right now because that they would need to do it because they've they've rates would be below. Right right are or patty thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. That's patty Cohen from the New York Times and ornaments quote we're should come from. It you know the debate the issue to track is on repatriation I saw something today. IV two point seven trillion that would come back under repatriation program well that's available to come that's avail I don't think it'll one. The problem this last go around when it was done during the Bush Administration. Very little that money got reinvested in two. Plants in and it was basically. I just did some research on it is. Paid out in in terms of bonuses and stock buybacks how do you prevent it from legislation because it the Republicans are gonna wanna just to be used for stock by. Yea you do if you are trying to run things equitably and fairly you don't try to prepare and look at. Anytime you start complicating the tax code by saying you can do this you can't do that it creates opportunities for people who abuse the system the example that I was give right now. Look if you own a business and your publicly traded company you declared dividend every quarter. You get to pay 15% on those taxes if you are a privately held company and you pay yourself that exact same way you pay marginal you're you're right your personal income taxes. That's a problem that is a is something that doesn't match up in the tax code in it incentivizes. I think the wrong kind of behavior so when you say you know what people say. Well how do you know how do we deal with the you know not wanting people to log go through but you know he uses money for buybacks or dividends and things like that. But you fix the system overall so those are incentivized that's that's how you do you don't add another layer. Of crap on top. It is time for trivia and we're doing trivia based on Billy jolt. And they had an auction a family purchased it for what 111 million dollars 111 million dollars yet developer by the name of Franklin L Haynie. And they are planning to invest get this. Thirteen billion dollars to complete this plants. And hopefully try. To finally bring it to life. This will be the first nuke bill the knee in the states in a long time to come online if they're successful it I majesty is such a long road for them they paid a hundred just to put in perspective they paid a 111 million dollars that this. And the TV it would they had five billion investment yes it would be about eighteen billion in total investment to get this up and running why would they buy the unity can build the a natural gas facility for fraction of the cost. They advocate of tried figured out I don't know I think it's it's something I'm I'm just not sure why. They would end up buying this unless they must really their plan is to say hey we tried in the pared down in the use the land something else but it's like. Nuclear development is so hard in the US with all the regulatory and you know last week we talked to Larry Kudlow and we asked him would he serve in the trop administration. I saw something on news Mac. News Max this morning John. Suggesting. That Larry Kudlow is being considered for one Jenny fields job right you take over his chair of the bad. And then the other job was chair of the president's. Commission on economic advisors. Think that would probably be the better fit for a minute to give the kind of work that he would enjoy a little bit more we have to move to New York herb moved to Washington for. He might have to spend some time there of the you have to live there primarily I. Larry he is checked his eighth major talker but I think Larry 6667. Years late sixties I believe there and and I just. I don't see him moving to DC based on. Yeah I put in your seniority and number of people in the trump administration potentially not spending an awful lot of time in DC trumpets opposite look at if possible I'd prefer spent some time in New York, New York in New Yorkers they'll likely the New York. Now they know they like New York. And then Stephen Newton it looks like is the lead guy for the treasury secretary's job. Not my top choice my top choice I've maintained was Jamie Dimon barrel Jamie would take. Yeah I mean I think they've never heard anything back about ten to eighteen you know and and and you and I both said look at that he'd be a great guy for the job but you know what what's the incentive to take it does he want to be. In a new policy making role like that I just don't know that's where he wants to go. Third Treasury Secretary to come out of Goldman's acts. Yes quite it's quite a few you know it's they they can never pretty direct pass through there Reuben Paul Saltzman and and new community is not there now. Not where now at Google would be no no he's previously been there. That he's he's moved around through the world of finance quite a bit over the last 2530 years. You know it's ironic you're gonna hear some inside info on them into action but he got he's tight with sorrows. He was in business with George Soros who was a huge financial backer of Hillary Clinton. Whoever wins tied together in finance and it is edited that these people throw me imagine. A lot of people don't know that it's not public well. Yet and they worked together right he did the that they did a lot of and I am the other so the new actions like Yale guy. Scullin balloons. You know he's your typical. We call. Finance guy. Is another word Ford. Business. The establishment. Is there in helping me in public what kind of were you looking for. Talk problem. Leader of the pack type guys out from Al Al though that's enough. It's tough to old to remember things anyway Agassi. I have no problem with the Newton being the the Treasury Secretary but I will say he's not and one dressed he's vetted jet had certainly. I like him better than you do you know if you want a guy who understands how money works there's no doubt in my mind the new action understands how money works. And I don't think there's a politician alive. Really understands them do you have any fears of rolling back too much regulation and putting is back in a position for another financial Christ I do I do worry you know like I worry that. You know you if you totally repealed. Dodd-Frank. You know and and reduced capital requirements difference it's like capital requirements now or 8% right there's parts of it that makes sense in terms of the capital requirements and the stress testing and things like that there's other parts where you look at it like. What are they doing talked to a banker talked to a small banker and they'll tell you their life has been made miserable. By Dodd-Frank use the if anybody who's running what is a small bank I'm talking about here. Eastern bank and Middlesex bank your leader bank regulation is killing us. Phrase you guys didn't help me he didn't know that one mastered the amount Stephen Newton. Mastery of the study you're going to different done different direction we got some interesting suggestions and from 50 wait top dog via book acted kind of digging them. You know yes mister chief hit some options out there though so master of the universe is the one of the. I make sense that that fits I think with. With what I would say is well let's do a little bit the stock talk here were joined by air and bush from the Motley Fool. Did talk about two different companies with us today Erin thank you for joining us. Yeah and let's talk first about Starbucks obviously. Howard shall company one of the biggest and best. In the food retail space where you wanted to kind of considered they kind of have their own category within. The sectors there. But the stock price has been on a little bit of a downward streak over the last year or so. What what exactly do you see from this company bullish or bearish on the at this point. I'm definitely bullets I think recently there have been. I'm concerned just about the US restaurant lowdown on what to expect a whole lot more than product and some commodity prices like milk. I'm pat creep up lately that to mean that sounds very short term in nature. And when I look at the long term fitness book is that that what you're saying is that it's a great business as a great brand excellent growth opportunities are so. I'm as a great you know and the opportunity here means you the company that this year's bad thing about these thousand. I need start but look case and not a number that not slowing down. Just that you look at China alone isn't expected doubled their store count and the next five years and the other thing that probably a little. Beyond ideas but that did it and shining it surpassed. The US Starbucks business that is pretty crazy to think about it when you look at the economic that it does that and how high their returns on investment. Cadillac I'm about 25%. On average there the past several years. Then number one bad thing Starbucks can do right now is open more stores and that's exactly what they're doing and it and if they keep arguing that it looked like as well it. Long term market it means. What is the us stock price struggled so much in light of all the new initiatives that they are undertaking. Yeah I think. Part of it is a struggle right now is more. Macros and it here many restaurant businesses have been up there there the past several months and I think Starbucks at their escape that. So when it comes the Payne Stewart those great and it being a temporary hit there and as I mentioned some commodity prices such as no. Have also been kind of trending up lately that put it short term debt on the spot for it I think. Looking out where they go for me mentioned international expansion obviously being a big play for the mentally also. Have tried to make inroads into an even higher levels stored in Starbucks I think it's Starbucks reserve is what they call it. Are they continuing to expand that as well. I think I think right now that. It's more of a concept and an idea more than pumping it there. Really rigorously they're spewing by it that acting work out there then and I think that could be another high margin. Opportunity for them and really just when you look at other avenues are proud that we didn't even touch on that could kind of that on that is. There they're really pushing drawing their do they have been putting their consumer packaged goods he that they really are branching out and many new new ways that I'll regret for a bit of business. Let's turn now to talk a little bit about a company in the world of Bach computer gaming this is Activision Blizzard which actually the first stock ever owns it would as a special place in my heart. Talk to us a little bit about this this company where you see them going they've been on quite a run the last two years now. Yet they've been on fire the past several orders really in my pocket and that. Really Activision has been writing that video game sales and more people spending more time playing more games and market our way. They have president and and PP inaccurate saying that also went on the gaming and went more recent acquisition of king. Mobile gaming as well and so. Really is that you look at their strategy here right now today they're milking their top brands like World of Warcraft all of the but there are having. Think that in some other New York franchises like destiny but all of them even more easily than that over watch in particular and we let. And it act act it is and where it and it. It out and giving them at the industry it felt this kind of reasoning that didn't look it up built and DL he's but. McKenna is known as downloadable content at. Does they're gaining a higher percentage of revenue which not only had to grow up but because none of those bills. Our physical and adopting cut out the middleman retailer actually think that businesses in March and Vera Bentley as well. There's a whole lot like here I mean. Data at a world war crap news the end they have they're on Netflix the Asia there are so growing. And many different ways as well and they pretty much cast those that did it seems like so much is going right for the business right now. Very good errant thank you very much for joining us. Yeah none of player video games. Do they have recurring revenue or do they oh yeah we knew by world warcraft is a monthly subscription. Well how does that work Mikey do you pay an upfront fee to buy it yes he pain upfront fees to buy it and on and on a monthly basis today is 1499. Hole. Yeah and then as downloadable content not just liberal or crap like call of duty. To like fifteen dollars for Carriker. Contact pretty intent and by the way so it's 1499. Right and they per month he said. Correct and they currently have just over eight million users which means they are bringing in about a 119 million dollars a month and recurring revenue is that new to have they Cleary know that they've they've had that property since 2000. I've played that game back in 2000 step into the updated pretty regularly edit put a new expansions like once every year to something like that I have to pay for I pretty much I've waited for three months now realize that to quit because it was too addicting I know several people who have gotten it like you which one did you get addicted to war I warcraft. And what about call of duty that's when I see until that every error yet call of duty they put out a new and that doesn't have the same recurring model but World of Warcraft. It's you've got eight million people that bring in a 112 million dollars a month. In recurring wrap their walking around a college campus and kids were playing video they were participating college activities they'll be too busy playing no video that is the college activity. Up from Cushing in Dolan and you know Muqtada bits of high net worth clients that would like to reduce the size of their state. But the one I give up access to their assets they still like playing with their money's elect investing excellent traveling is there anything they can do to reduce the size of their state. Yet still maintain some control in the ability to use the assets they've accumulated you know they're absolutely as I remembered you remember the fiscal cliff you know that secondly 2012 to grow we had a big fiscal cliff where everything was gonna go back to a million dollars in your exemption federally was gonna be reduced to a million. And that we're a constant extreme tax pain for a lot of people. So what we. Came up with is these spousal lifetime access trusts which is just that it's the way to make gifts as we would tell clutch and you got to move assets Saudi or state before the fiscal cliff hits. And then they would say even if they were worth ten million they'd like gavel we don't want to. This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're still be your world. Stay informed and today about economic and market trends plus give breaking business news. And now the initial exchange with the Mario Armstrong and chunks. It's a mixed bag for stocks today VS and he isn't positive territory. The NASDAQ is in positive territory with seems to be going on is a rotation it's a voter rotation now. First you had everybody rushing into bank stocks after selling off there is here tech stocks and treasuries. Now looks like everybody money's going back into things like Netflix and Amazon Amazon shares up two point 7%. Yeah Amazon surging pretty strongly and really you take a look at a lot of these tech companies that have seen a lot of outflows in recent days. Apple back up one and a half percent Microsoft up 2.3. Lot of money getting back to the telecoms utilities places like that so. This is kinda what I talked about over the last couple days were hey you get this big of groundswell money heading into. These sectors over the last week herself. Yeah might have gotten a little ahead of ours. Yeah net could've oil trading at 45 dollars gold at 1226 and getting questions on the text line shouldn't be buying gold and silver. I gave you a new guy to look out for me Tucker the you get. Try to get him he had an interesting perspective on why gold is declining in price visit this cut somewhat. But I guess it makes sense in dollars getting stronger dollar thought that far away from getting to about thirteen year high you that you look at the dollar index. He at that rate hike next month he could see the dollar rally pretty success. Yet taken a look at the dollar index which what this is is it it compares to a basket of other currencies were okay. And I'm gonna pull the chart over the last five years mocha right now the dollar index is out 100 okay this match is the strongest level that we have seen. In the last five years how much stronger is this then it's been you know recently but was down around 92 at one point earlier this year is about an 8% rally there. The big shift where it happened though was back in fourteen when China decided to watch devalue their currency bouquet. And what you've seen as the dollar index has gone from eighty to a hundred since then it's 25% appreciation. Against other currencies. And that's good and back right I mean it's good from a consumer standpoint because you're. If you have a job to your doctor right in the dollar strong get your buying things like gasoline your buying clothes and services. The dollar strong goes further if you work. For error GE and you're competing for Boeing parts they you're competing. To manufacture parts for Airbus may get a pretty tough it does and so you know you look at this and for the average consumer strong dollars probably pretty good but mark the reason manufacturing taking you know hit the last couple years has been because of this stronger dollar as he mentioned you know. Be I'm looking at the Euro it's down 107. I mean are we. Are we shade away from parity on the Euro you get there today is that. You just look at the history of the year in it it's remarkable that remark a British pound. He did British pound surviving better than the Euro British thousand dollar 24 members. Pound has been holding up a little bit better than the Euro even though. If you take a look over the course of this year you know really that both both of those currencies have struggled to learn different reasons. But you know the the Euro actually this year has actually been better just because the pound is seen so much weakness due to breaks it. The the Euro against the dollars going down about 1% wears the pound is down about twenty. You don't look pretty exciting guy. That it I don't know if you guys knew this or not but I live you know this day. I live on the Korea and at night what I do is read thirteen F filings and you know earlier in the show I shared with you. What Warren Buffett is buying up he's buying up airline stocks. Now I tell you Woodrow and George Soros is still. What's that he's buying alphabet. Netflix and he dumped. In giving him credit here he dumped his Disney shares Andy's look unloading shares of General Motors. Yeah he's make some changes here at this point moving into a little bit more in technology. Also picking up by a local company Biogen Biotech company. The now is getting pretty successful picked up. This weather don't quite understand you picked up a little bit of Hewlett-Packard the enterprise side of the company after they were split them. I don't really understand anyone ever owning Hewlett-Packard it's one of those companies that you kind of look at and say. Why him. Having split in half at least the enterprises the side that you want to be and so makes more sense you ought to be unique in cartridge analysts all that is just they did business at this point he still byline the you do is limited at turner the margins so crappy. That's the thing is do you want to own the company. But he unloaded a number of shares in Disney General Motors Hershey. Anthem delta Monsanto and pandora media. Now that's it's pretty. Pretty interesting to watch these big boys are buying and selling. Hey I I I've. Continue to do research on technology distractions truck season almost every day where his drive into work and there's an accident on straight away. And each suspect that it's due to distracted driving we have many of our listeners are truck drivers and they'll text in and say. I just passed somebody that's texting and driving and it's I saw a fender Bender on Sunday believe on the highway and there's no wonder what those from yeah it's it's it's becoming very common for a New York Times article that is quoting. The numbers that we're seeing of traffic fatalities. After steady declines over the last four decades highway fatalities last year recorded the largest annual percentage increase in fifty years. And the number so far this year or even worse now last year if your call gentlemen it was about a 9% increase in traffic fatalities. In the first six months of 2016. Highway deaths jumped ten point 4%. To 171775. From the comparable period of 2015 this according to the knicks. Now this is seemingly. An insurmountable problem now I know we all have our solutions should the tires. Option tires at the time news right now while they're driving. Pull them over and outlook for rest and invention the tires. No you will not text and drive again if the police officers shoot your tires I think you better is drive over the full. After shooting tires or no they don't should have had a can't call for help I like leave them stranded like. You want to make them feel like they have no hope if they continue texting and driving since they don't. If I don't I talked to a police officer and he told me. He said he thinks that the distracted driving problem is worse than dropped. I agree he said he needs to be treated. Remember a few hundred dollar fine actually dazed you guys don't remember this but back in the seventies. Drunk driving was not a big deal wasn't Alia father tells real time just like daily and or why things and a daddy used it was no big deal. And then they started track in the statistics and the settlement and and Madd mothers instructor that was where the crackdown really came from was depression that mad put on that was on that that really came out in the 1980s that's when that whole thing started. And then in the 1980s that's when you started to see. You know traffic stops in in where they would they would check of the checkpoints that checkpoints at. And you about my generation we drop back in the seventies drunk driving news is the norm. Cops if you talk to a cop especially if you talk to an emergency responders and ambulance driver and a cup of tea. A lot of these accidents if you're gonna have. Truck this year you're looking at 3540000. Deaths due to distracted driving. Have the run over the phone. Should the tires they will never text and drive again you know. Ever I don't know fight agree with the issue is probably illegal but. I still think it's what we should do with the utilities to do speed traps laid bare never radar detectors or do you get that before you tell Leah now I amber. Used to hide and and Kleenex box he put Kleenex boxes are illegal right you know Phoenix lock us up on the dash to get enough and inside that Kleenex box what is your radar detect Oca. And optioned catcher in the they they were allowed to some states are allowed to say you mister Armstrong please hand me your radar detector. They put in your tires that it would you please back up mr. Armstrong now than they go to go forward mr. Armstrong and you run over your world and they were expensive. Like back in the eighties a radar detector or you're boxer is 300 yeah. Now it's on your phone. Right if you don't get all the apps with weighs just tells you when the cops are ways as cop and 100 yards you know and slowdown but it. I don't know it's I don't I have no idea what eventually will be done. That something has to occur. If again I am time people are not willing to take my tires shooter idea to lob to the highest level UR winds we wound fear. Up next are going to be talking about the health effects what are the what are the impacts on public health. After you have recreational. Marijuana Kevin Lauria from the business insider has studied this in Colorado so we're going to be of the share with you what the result of public health bar. Well marijuana recreational marijuana is. Now legal in 20%. Of the country including. Massachusetts. And Maine we're joined by Kevin Lawrie from the business insider he's been studying this topic. Thank Kevin are you. There are terrific so. Instate that you studied Colorado specifically but in Colorado. Our kids more likely to use pot than they were prior to the recreational marijuana being made available. Those are what we know from Colorado and Washington is that the rate of EU aides have not gone. It's still early date night is we're bringing out that you know we. The they're they're kind of recreational sales only went into the fact that when he worked scene but so are. And these race remains stable there's six breeders' a greater taxpayers and traders eleventh graders operators and yet they're not more likely to attract in January. We're about traffic accidents because that's something I've heard as a concern I talked to the police chief for local town in Massachusetts. And he was quite concerned. That recreational marijuana being made available in Massachusetts would lead to an increase in traffic accidents. Sure that it is an interesting question and you know from Colorado and watching and again we have it is still. Little bit early what was he noted that overall there not been an increased number of accidents. Are numbers you know accident and that you know in the states. These numbers remain balloon the national average. There has been an increase in the number of people who have. Tested positive for marijuana in the accident but an overall numbers haven't gotten and people think that as you know especially in Washington. It'd be passed from airline before and now that you. They're now my children somebody's system whether it's affecting them or not is as. Kevin we have a big problem with all pioli views in New England it's it's literally all over New England Cape Cod Manchester, New Hampshire. Boston Connecticut Rhode Island I mean it's a huge problem. You wrote in your article. That recreational marijuana use deep creases OP Hewitt consumption which is counter intuitive because I've always been told. That marijuana is a gateway drug. Share certain distinct question and what you know about kind of pair wanted to thank the Yankees. That they they kind of gateway drug idea is not a thing that we've actually even when we Adidas. You know our our research on marijuana could be a lot better than it is just as it is an advocate I studied. But the upkeep it doesn't actually and that make people more like could you editor. In the case of Oakley is. And what we're seeing a fire has mostly been kind of as a result of medical care. But in state that has kind of you know where people can act that. Marijuana European movies seem to get the least it seemed an experience to decrease in the rate appealing to you and appeared over. And so you know basically that people think that you know an existing it policies such petite marijuana for the only that they used. Or wanted to treat that means that about the way that this could be kind of an overall net benefit and appeal it. You know created really terrible problem. What about the yet though the danger of overdosing. On edible that's another thing that I've heard concerns from family members and and friends they said. In a very that we should be opposed to this because of the edible marijuana. Kids are overdosing and having to be treated in hospitals due to overdose. I so this is another interesting thing they're that is treat it in Colorado. You know we have seen more calls to merton Syrians and we're in control and there's out. You know it accidentally ingesting. There are one double and the reported data as late night in the at very unpleasant experience and but you know when we talk about these things is where you know. One thing you don't let you. People keep calling and acted up really important to keep there one adequately. And yet indicated that this has happened you know. At least you know fortunately unlike some other there's. There's no risk event and a fatal. Thing that ever happened and yet we're bringing up these numbers you know they are and it's not a good thing that we don't want that happened. And they're still on the low side of Earl packing you know. If people call hospital where you can call centers. It more often depicted he you know credit and dictate taste or baca. A guy that I used to coach hockey we're told me in he's a police officer. He told me he was glad that it had passed the recreational marijuana because he got he didn't like arresting people. For marijuana use what does that recreational pot how does that impact arrest rates and how has it impacted arrest rates in Colorado. So art you know in Colorado and Washington. Betty and directory has undated. Adding on how you measure it but you look at Iraq you look at you know in order here and there's like that. The number and it ranges somewhere between 60% and you know 90% if you look at low levels are there in Washington. That is you know a really significant impact it's a lot your people kind of doing the justice system a lot less money being spent on enforcement. It would EC for tax revenues in Colorado and Washington. Throw into this case as well you know by the kind by the second year after legalization mean they're. Tax revenues were exceeding their expectations I think the second year daily edition. Colorado brought in something like 129 million in taxes in Washington something like 220 million. And which is you know it is more than expected and compared city tired as the state budget not not but it inside and it you know that is. How many people are growing their own week. There. Yeah that's an interesting question and actually not serve in the because they know that that is something that is but but he is. I talked to the director of the Colorado program and he said that was a faulty felt it was a fault. In the law because it was curtailing sales through the taxable channels. Adjusting. My dad you know I I'm not sure that there is think think we're all right DeVon thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. I expect. Kevin Lauria from business insider talking to us about merit didn't really matter and it's here it's coming. They'll be pot shops opened in one month from today. Well no I don't think one other shops will be but you'll be allowed to legally grown Massachusetts. One month from today where do you mind. Well it's going to be a 1018 for shops Fareed. The other jobs are probably about a year and a half way over where would you buy exe wanted to grow marijuana where would you go would you buy seeds do you buy plane that's our started. They do go to Home Depot Olympic once a marijuana plants. I would now. Yeah it's six plants I've never girls marijuana before its six plants per person. We hear a lot to grow I've got high ceilings you know of I've what I've got ten foot ceilings of the sunlight little bit aside job for an eye and a lot of sunlight and the other thing that's nice I get a communal water bill in my buildings though. There's that. Year. You know I lost or Tripp. Yeah. Yeah it definitely check your feet for the full floor. It's a territory we'll have to wait until we come back to do or trivia question. The US has finalized quiet cars rules to prevent injuries how to use them that I drive a quiet cars drive electric car. One time I was in my own driveway. And my son who is playing catch and he ran into my car. Could hear. It it it there it's it's an eleven cars or cry. I'll tell you shall I go out and I run on the streets of Bob Boston's Somerville and and the toughest thing for me is when you do have something like a Prius or volt driving around because our techno lot a lot of times I'll be coming through. An intersection and part of the way that idea tell what's going on as you can listen to see if there's something around a building fancy. Well you can't hear these quiet cars especially in a city environment where a lot of people tend to have them so what you are going to be seeing here not to Tony ninety. Not until 2019 but you US Transportation Department. Is going to require these vehicles to actually make a little bit of noise when their above eighteen point six miles now okay. So the noise at that it's not gonna be like a beeping just as you go insane if you just heard a bunch of hybrids beeping but will be some kind of a simulation of an engine sound or something similar just so that you can actually get a sense of if there's something around a quarter or you've been caught by surprise but these Aaliyah. I mean. That's why I've I've run into vehicles when running because you kind of you know you're looking around at sharp corner and he can't see anything new office on this guy comes flying out you sit there you say well. You shouldn't be driving that car you're driving that fast mr. Prius driver. Trivia is up next assuming I can find it all that more from our insurer matched up on student. It is time for trivia. And we cage did Billy jolt graduate from high school. Our text number is 686 saving the first listener with the correct answer wins a fifty dollar gas card. At which age. Did Billy Joel's graduate. From high school and again the text number is 68680. So we're finally starting to get in listing. As to where Medicare. Is spending all the drug money I guess that's the wrong way to put it a what are the biggest prescriptions. In terms of cost as a relates to Medicare drugs right. Yeah and and what we've found is some of the odd drugs that were most up frequently is not most frequently but the combination of the price and frequency of use. Resulted in a couple drugs that had some pretty shocking price tags. To Medicare carbonite which is hepatitis C treatment. Not cost about seven billion dollars in total spending. In 2015. Followed by diabetes treatment called Atlantis which at four point four billion dollars in total spending as well what we saw. In general increase in prescription drug cost. Iran the increase in opera sure prescription drug spending was caused. Significantly just by the in increasing number of prescriptions but also by a pretty significant increase in prices over that time. One of the things that uninteresting. The biggest increase in prices luster guess where they wore. In terms of the other type drugs. Well like the -- the whole Pepsi thing had to be a bit not not type I guess so the the biggest police reached on increase was in June there all your area actually where you're supposed to see if it's generic anyone in Canada well no that's not what you saw actually people been buying up these generic drugs and trying to get orphan drug status from the F at. Was yep but at the data and because of that yeah it came out better creases well they do is they put about this day they'll buy their competitor you stop the drug then raise the price if it's absolutely. Astounding that this is allowed to finance it just speaks to it will notices. Poor regulation that's what it really is is you're right the danger of regulation is when you don't have the right regulation this happened. If it is well Wall Street guys are creative they're gonna figure out a way around. It's just it's so don't you don't that we talked about the seven billion on Pepsi because that's you know Pepsi. For the most part is caused by intravenous drug use now. I have a friend who got Pepsi from a drug transfusion and she went on this drug by the way. The it is a miracle cure is she. She she talked to me about it she didn't tell me into laughter she went on the treatment yeah it was night and day that you you wouldn't recognize the woman who's there cure for it prior to that. No the heat you know there are wars he waited until your liver die and you got a transplant which is a horrible medical yeah procedure now via. A liver transplant is three times the cost of our own. Right carbonite costs about eighty ground liver transplant costs about a quarter million bucks a wonder we're gonna see the other spending on that drug drop a little bit just because there might have been a backlog of people who just needed treatment allow. Maybe but I'll tell you eat the the prison population alone. Is out you know the truth if all the sudden. The they give it to the prisoner population you're gonna see the increase in sales thru the roof they got to drive the price down. And we drive the price down as you sell more and more it but it right now it's still. ED I think there's another one that came out another competing company came out with the treatment that's about sixty there is I can't remember what it is but there is another treatment that's out there that still expensive but still lot cheaper than literature it is a miracle cure if you know anybody with Pepsi you know out of talking about. They don't forget tomorrow chuck and I will be. There's a week or two ago that we were talking about Reynolds being acquired by the British American tobacco company. Looks like they declined the initial offer. Yep pretty much our Reynolds is asking for a higher price in order to complete this offer out pretty common it was a it is especially with with this with the way this deal is set up British American Tobacco already owns significant chunk of Bob Reynolds here's there just kind of trying to figure out what the best price will be. Shares are still at 53 dollars shares of the still projecting. That some kind of deal doesn't of getting done was got Collison a six or at about 56 though I think he probably end up with something maybe 58 male 59 in that ballpark to. Did you really cost them that much parity don't have the company that's silly he seemed. It's a lot of fuel in the stock. But it's not a lot to British American to tobacco. I think we should have bought this fence company for an Israeli company that fence in the Gaza Strip. Climbs 19%. On trumped wall and I guess the speculation is that the wall will be made at a cement will be offense. In this company it's called either Mac or mugged all I'm not sure how to pronounce Miguel Miguel security systems. It is. And 89 million billing this is an 89 million dollar company so in terms of their overall revenue in the last year but okay. This is a company. That did a grand total. A 63 million dollars in revenue last year so small company OK but they are up significantly. After the election here with the stock rising. From about four dollars and fifty cents a share now up over 525. Why would trump hire an Israeli company to build the fence in the United States I don't know maybe to the or which do. It can't be seems like a lot of companies should be able to do I'll do it for us you will ban on the Americans. You know really strike me as the fans ultimately I'll get into the businesses that much money that's probably true. Apple is exploring augmented reality that's a again I'm going to be critical I hate that I feel like I'm. And apple. You know I am always beat up on them but there you go Google's already got. Artificial lure of virtual reality a Samsung hasn't an apple saying well we might look into. Well this apple always does though they're never first to market. You know again they didn't have the first MP3 player in the the iPod was two or three years after the first couple. Okay they're perfect they didn't have the first Smartphone Blackberry was in that market. Wave before the new what do they do that absolutely destroyed and now that in the first tablet people have been making tablets for years to know want to sell them. Apple made it cooled own tablet the one place where they haven't really figured out yet the watched it was a quite do what they want. I just thought that's who the first watched like. Whatever that technology is call it Smart watch just art auction where the first resident and Samsung have wanted to beat Pitt might have had one I'm not sure that was before but Sampson was the first that party and Sampson is never sold anything apples at least you know made millions of sales and that's based. I I'm not critical for it with apple in terms of being slowed the part of it they're always they're never first and they always come in with a higher priced product until they make those fat margins they do. What I am concerned about is. Is this where they should be going that's that's my big concern. Is augmented reality area that you wanna be going after war. Are there different areas that need to pick up yesterday we reported that Harman a Connecticut company Stamford Connecticut company had been acquired. Today were require reporting that a rocky hill based cellphone franchise company has been acquired. Two companies in two days yeah around the room LLC is in Indiana based company. And they are buying a company in in Connecticut called Al wireless so. That is a outrage that they have like 400 stores 357. Stores I didn't realize it was that big huge so they are a buying this company here and this is an agreement. Really to increase the number of stores that they have to us sell their products and sell. They are a Verizon deal or so pretty tightly associated with Verizon products and really just gives them an additional expansion into the northeast through this purchase here. Did you know that Google had drone project. They're in droves India it was a project wing or something like yeah that's right and a. Well I'm so out of that I didn't even know that Gould was working on a drone project mark Bergen has been following the project he's from Bloomberg and he joins us now are you doing mark. Glad to so who is. Google working with on this project to develop the drones. What are some other kind of working with them so may develop this in house. The project started about four years ago I heard the three or four years ago. Candidates contesting it actually. Trulia. And it MIT professor at brand the program first and then two years ago it hired Dave bought it and aerospace and aviation. Better and to get a program off the ground. They have that that they commercially it'll want to have front of me there aren't doing deliveries by next year and they started. I would there approval this summer to run and test sites and US. So why are they pulling out of that business Amazon's used to be moving forward full speed and Google's go in the opposite direction. Brad I would say they're pulling out but they certainly are are slowing economy be reevaluating. In part because you know it Amazon explanation of that a lot of in the valley is that. Amazon is day delivery and logistics company. It's but they do really really well. Google the Data Co. and have released our engineers in the tinker with projects. And they've never done with just dictum operation and delivery very well. So they were partnering is I understand they are partnering with Starbucks. So they can deliver. I guess copy and whatever you buy Starbucks to give it is that is that what was that the vision. And as a ticket compatible and your own hand a drone would come and deliver. An emulator or some sort of meta. I think there's there's some issue there with. Getting actual weight and may be regulation size in and they realize that do an ambulance arrived just quickly drowned. You know right now. There were still waiting in peacekeeper the regulators to. The crew. Trying to make regulation and then there's a lot of restrictions on that and then they talk to each vote labor talks with him to have. Which is coming out of China and the build the hardware and and then they're also building the software and well but I'm considered to be apple. Drones. Apple kind of built everything and upwards at the hardware. Telling people are are. Pretty excited on Amazon is doing a live fairly secretive. It's actually caused problems because it becomes so difficult to find apps in the store that a lot of people who have developed new ones and find that they can't get any traction. For getting out there were only like 101000 it was like OK there's only so many apps out there and yet you could pick people up just by you know browsing around today.
