This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus give breaking business news and every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chunks. Bastille day Bastille day is the French national day commemorates the storming of the Bastille. On the fourteenth of July 17 89. It's an important event. In Paris in the French revolution which had begun only two days earlier. And now ladies and gentlemen it's going to be remembered as a day of infamy in which the terrorist. Attacked and killed at least 84 people and perhaps more trucks ought to. Is this the Friday morning ritual that we have to become accustomed to. Or does seem that we have. Unfortunately fallen into this pattern in in recent weeks and you know unfortunately talking about. At this point. As far as we know north of 84 people that have died to this point there are supposedly reported and another thing fifty that are. Still fighting for their lives right now and it's something that unfortunately we are seeing happening think. Orchard frequently and France at a state of war in the last eighteen months had been under it in an emergency mode. For eighteen months have been seven attacks 240. People have died we did hear from France swap along moments ago you are playing that audio clip for a doctor. Parra again that's trust me fronts. It needs we'll see during the night so eight. Lorry truck those truck against Alice people celebrating the fourteenth of July of about investing today. Human rights. I deny excuse by fanatics. And France is quite clearly that market. Wouldn't I pressed on behalf of the nation. The week show. Solidarity towards the victims and their families to achieve France is afflicted but she's strong. And and she would always be stronger I assure you could always be stronger than the fanatics. He wants to strike today. France reeling. I mean it we were dealing with the same thing in the United States he would say you look at what's going on globally chalk and and ask yourself the question what more can be done how do you defend. This type of terrorism it is it's the guy took a truck. Yep it's that there's there's not much if someone wants to do something crazy there's not much you can do by the way this you know we look at this we even heard of this before it's not occurred. In the United States it hasn't occurred in France but I guess in the Middle East. It's very common it to have somebody steal a truck and it's it's been done in Israel has been done another Middle Eastern states where this type of terrorist attack has occurred. Yes it's. Again unfortunately there's there's not a whole lot that you can do. To stop something like this necessarily you can turn again we saw here with the truck you can turn just about anything and it is something that is going to hurt people and you know it I don't know liner I don't know what can be done to completely stop anything like this I think you can certainly. Start to have conversations about. What type of overall foreign policy and and looking in depth conversations about that as far as what needs to be done to stop this at this source jail because I think that is you know the critical aspect to this. Because neo again once someone is you know where where other people are. They can do whatever they want. Me you know I was looking yet. The the financial impact of this and interestingly. Markets don't seem to be responding in a negative fashion to this news. But. I was looking at tourism in France there are annually chopped Ev3 million tourists who visit. France each year it represents 7%. Of their GDP France is the world's top tourist destination. With 83 million foreign student tourists. They had 55 million skier days sold you know 55888. To foreigners. Then that they come in by. Business tourism is also crucial sector for France with 6000. In 81 events that were organized in the year 2011. One pastor asked the question what does this do if your idea and if your General Electric. And you're planning to have a convention with. 600 of your top salespeople. In Paris would you do. Well again it's it's not my place to tell companies what they should do when they're planning on bringing. You know hundreds or thousands of people into any one area I think they're going to be some that certainly revisit the idea that sure about moving it elsewhere apps I think they're gonna be some that say you know what. We read this is you know kind of an out liar it's something that. Could happen anywhere as we've seen this can happen anywhere you're not safe necessarily. By staying somewhere else they may say look you know we're gonna take some extra security precautions and move forward so interesting that it's happening a lot. More in France than it is though like you don't hear about it occurring in Germany you don't hear about terrorist acts like this and in Great Britain. And it's it seems very targeted towards France is your logic behind that. What think France you know obviously has a history in northern Africa of being. A colonial regime there and we know that that's certainly has been a factor in a number of places such as Molly in recent years. As terrorist who's from Tunisia right. Correct northern Africa as well as you start to look into the Middle East in France has been significantly more involved there. Then the Germans have over the last fifteen years as well which potentially makes them somewhat of a target too so. It's you know I think those are reasons also Germany keep in mind after the the Munich massacre at the Olympics. Founded in really set up a special terrorist force to counter terrorist force to deal. With incidents of this nature and they in general have been acting pretty good. They are some of the best people in the world in fact and are feeling now with these types of situations bile. Counts of France's gonna have to invest more. Then there are you haven't security and by all accounts there're there're special forces responded to this very quickly. But he's not before the guy drove a mill a mosque about a mile. Yeah he just run of people it was a truck what can you do you know maybe you see any of the stream online yeah FaceBook plus dep awful stuff it was just. Awful awful stuff. It was it was almost like it was in slow motion but just there are so many people that they couldn't get out of the way you know was like here's to a sixty miles an hour rate. B it was very targeted. It was a straight away where he's able to gather speed and and it took a mile before they were able to figure out which we think about it. And and they were able to get him at all. Early eighties the book he. I think usually go twenty to thirty miles an hour but it's just you know what again it's faster than a person can run when he of so many people in a tight -- can't move any nowhere to deal news is there's reports that you're shooting to correct. They don't know if you were shooting or if police were shooting at the truck. The truck was riddled with bullet holes if you look at pictures of the truck you lose you lose absolutely riddled. With the bullet holes beat any. The Euro and and in terms of when we're looking at the financial indicators. In in Europe right now I see the Euro trading at 110. European stocks were wounded down a little they were down slightly Mina I don't think this is going to have any material impact. Black tie twenty years ago it sure would of went right does this didn't happen twenty years ago yep but you can also. It the case that twenty years ago those reactions were overstated. You know it's it was too when you see that big of a reaction to a post to something like this. Again you know unfortunately these types of things have become more commonplace and especially you look at France and some of the things that we've seen. We saw I was at the nightclub shooting last fall right I believe was either the spring before that same spring. We saw the the newspaper not shooting I mean that there have been a number of being. Terrorist events in France and author several years at concert at the nickel John yeah al-Qaeda night nightclub concert a mile. So it you know you you have seen several of these. And it has not affected markets to us. Not yet yet. Right coming up next we're gonna be joined by Larry Kudlow and Larry Kudlow is you know is a an advisor. One of the few advisors on economic issues. To Donald Trump and we're gonna talk to him. About how he would advise if Donald Trump is victorious in November. What would Larry Kudlow and vice beating him and I asked Larry for five point plan. That he would direct. In an answer. Of the president if it is in it does in fact happened to be. Donald Trump's no Larry cut both CNBC joins us next talking about Donald Trump on financial exchange from our insurer match dot com studios. This is Barry Armstrong and I'm joined today by estate planning attorney. Potluck ski from the law firm of Cushing and dole in which your financial exchange quick tip of the day. Today we're talking about the top misconceptions. About. Medicaid irrevocable trusts so folks are. Are apprehensive Todd about transferring highly appreciated assets like real estate or stock into an irrevocable trust because they feared their beneficiaries. Will get the step up in cost basis upon their death. Is that true yeah and it's not true. And it's not true because as many people think when you're transferring to again that word irrevocable. Accurate gift. And that's true if you can't make a gift then you would have this carry over basis and you would have lost the stepped up. But the way these trusts or draft with the way we do my Cushing and Dolan is. We make it an incomplete gift to the trust that way you can put the 500000 dollar home that vacation home up on the late in the air. Without paying a gift tax. And because it fits in complete that's how you get it and number one and number true you retain the right to the income from these trusts. That causes you not only to enjoy the income but cost the and that trust to be included in your state what you guys. In the gross estate not the probate estate rate thereby receiving that all important step up in basis. And for all you folks that means that it eliminates. All the built in capital gain. On the property that you put in there when your children go to San. Get the facts about protecting your assets avoiding probate keeping your money in your bloodline and reducing your state taxes. Knowing this there's the charts graphs and numbers all day and just listen to us it's the financial exchange with Valerie Armstrong and chunks of us on the financial exchange radio network. It we didn't. We've been getting economic data all morning long and should probably reflect on some of that Chuck Todd day. We're normally. You know it this would be our lead story you know we'd be talking about with you know with the economy's doing and and in and what kind of data we're getting. We could start I suppose. With retail sales. Yeah retail sales numbers came in better than expected but we did see the prior month revised downward so that is. Somewhat balancing it out retail sales growth for the month came minute point 6% compared to point 2%. For the month before after a point 3% downward revision big thing that you saw here though is that. The trend over the last year has been significant growth in online retail with online retail now 14% year over year right but standard traditional retail department stores. Had really struggled we saw growth in both of those areas for the month of June actually that is a positive sign. That you are seeing broad based retail growth in not simply. People transitioning from. Traditional retailer to on line. Learn an idea. The news bearer certainly. Better than had been expected. I think there is a fair statement. Let's take a look at the Yahoo!. We've got news out of Yahoo! I guess they're collecting their final bids. We should hear something on Yahoo! next week as I understand it. Get a final bids are due on Monday the board is set to make a decision pretty close up pretty soon afterwards there. We still don't know exactly. Who is in the bidding we have heard rumors of AT&T we've heard rumors of Verizon. You know obviously with a company like this that appears to be having no meaningful property there's always talk that maybe HP could become involved is because we have a history of bad acquisitions. But you know it's it's difficult to say exactly who's involved right now. But all accounts are that they're going to likely end up getting less for the properties than they originally believe. You know they had this deal with Mozilla Firefox I don't know if you saw this or not. But the here there arrangement. Wood was that they would pace up that 350 million dollars a year. To Mozilla for making Yahoo! does the default browser. On on Mosul. And that's bite them in the rear end. They've just had a number of bad bad business decisions it has simply not paid off the way they thought it would. You know that the mean and a number of deals you can go pretty much down the list the and pretty much any time they've invested a significant amount of money. They haven't done very well on now give me and at some point you have to. Acknowledged that Marissa Mayer meats and steaks and and look I was someone who when she came in you know obviously very well regarded in Google one of the first employees there help build that company. But he has been a major struggle for her Yahoo!. We're joined now by senior contributor to CNB CMR Larry Kudlow you may not have known this but Larry is also an author. And he wrote a book that will be published in September it's called JFK. And the Reagan revolution I got an advance copy of the book and it tells the story of Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon. Who's a Republican. In the Kennedy administration. Good morning Larry and welcome to the financial exchange. Thank you very appreciate it. How Telesis just a synopsis if you wouldn't mind before we get into our main topic. About Douglas Dillon he had a heck of a job and it's pretty strange that a guy like him ended up in the Kennedy administration. Well experience been there almost like three Republican cabinet and an administration. Which itself I think. He is such an important lesson about. Our partnership after close close race now go on what Eisenhower. Undersecretary of state for economic policy. Bill on the former director for an. Kennedy don't socially and hear a lot of good things about it brought about it is stretchers start there and bad. When JFK. That the economy it's tremendous stimulus that I've been growing for almost ten years really they were street recession and that he people forget about it. He turned it you know one and he also earned it is out of the economic advisors of the moralist liberal gains in the mr. Walter Keller and others. And CCA's. That bad temporary tax credit you know middle class. About the player to fill out that no we need lower marginal rate. Created that and that rewards. We knew him across the board and forbid and capital gain. Kennedy went out that choosing Dylan advised. Over Keller is that by. And as it turns out Ronald Reagan borrowed Kennedy tax cut orders all of plan and acknowledged that really. Though that it is linked it's almost forgotten history now between what Kennedy did Al Reagan adopted it. Add that out prosperous. Aaron the XP eighties and nineties were as a result though we look at video lot. I paper Democrat Rios boat that was a lot for sharing. Well let's fast forward now we're we're sitting here and it's July 15 let's fast forward to December 1. Of 2016. And Donald Trump is the Victor in the presidential race and he calls upon you Larry. To help the bottom two thirds of the American economy. Meaning 6070%. Of Americans have not participated. In the economic growth during the last twenty years what's your advice to. Well my advice frankly there's the followed its air gate Reagan approach. Particularly now it. What our. Business apps for both large and small corporation. We need that latched down. And by the way and Robert Horry proposed eight if he'd respect hair straight. Or Citicorp's. That would be out of thirty are at a 15% tax rate. Four escort itself all past ballots that stand out from forty that this is another word. Simulate economic growth make America great place the best. And the biggest beneficiary. Of those tax that's going to be who wage earning battle where that's the way the numbers were yeah that's already part of there's a platform. I've read and and that some of the tweaks. That make it Moore broke the boat that that the bats were you want to go back our air up in the app that I wasn't a surprise there. There's in the theater and I said what the president rob do you were faced with a recession. The first set the first days that without my. That taxes and regulation. Open up the economy to business investment jobs and wage I think that's exactly what point. We know liberals are gonna scream bloody murder about that they're gonna say all you do and is giving tax cuts to rich Kent rich fat cats. How how does Donald Trump responded. He's just got to stay. The story you have no plans to restore economic growth. You against investment do not helping businesses. Or you want to do is redistributed. She wants to raise taxes almost across the board. You want to punish corporations. You have no plan to restore America's growth of the inspectors and I do you have no plant productivity as I do. And that's what the American want not a lot of attacks the bridge. Rhetoric get. The only believe it that but. Adopt the language he's been using it in the democratic black spot which is that for a spot for. That would help out but bad break here and again there yup. It showed especially in the debates Larry thank you very much for joining us we appreciate your time. That's Larry Kudlow senior contributor to CNBC and author of the book JFK. And the Reagan revolution inching I had no idea that JFK had three Republicans whose camp. Relatively balanced now you know relatively balanced and and Treasury Secretary was a Republican via its it was a relatively. Balanced cabinet. You don't see that anymore news. It's not something that you know you look at. You know. What happens after elections today you don't see anymore at all you did see a few Republicans and Obama's first cabinet did you not at this point but in his first cavities I think it was either two or three you know. Ari up next what were wary talking about we'll have your trivia question of course. Were also taking a look there's a merger that has been proposed between Xerox and our. We'll talk about that and much more on the financial exchange from our insurer match dot com studio. Making your Smartphone even smaller here. Trivia is brought to you by Arnold's lobster and clam bar located on US route six in east and Massachusetts. Arnold has a great raw bar including Wellfleet oysters lobster rolls fried clams terrific onion rings and much more. Called it 5082552575. And here's your first trivia question it's widely expected that Donald Trump will. And ask Mike Pence to run with him as vice president he's postponed that announcement. In which year was Mike Pence elected governor of sick of Indiana. 68680. Is our text number in which year was Mike Pence elected governor. Indian if you're the first listener of the correct answer that question. You'll win a fifty dollar gift certificate to Arnold's lobster and clam bar. Again our text number is 68680. Right chuck let's jump in to the I was gonna talk to you. Put that story now here it is the Xerox story. Xerox and RR Donnelley. Yes Xerox rejected a merger deal with our. To merge their legacy copier business. At this point day effectively. Said that they are not interested right now. Of its own businesses at this point right and so it doesn't appear this deal is going to end up. Getting done Xerox also announced back in January they are going to be breaking up splitting off that copier business as well as their business services division. And so pretty much what is seniors that that copier business would not be emerging in with our Don Italy's border fest on state communities to struggling companies right. Yeah I don't know two wrongs make a right though I mean it's you know you've got these companies you'd be of the gains and efficiencies and fire some workers I don't know if there's enough efficiencies to be gained him you know that it's. That bill hardware business the computer hardware business and anything any type of tech hardware now. It is just eight Hoff. Business the margins are thin there's a ton of pressure. There's not that hunt of growth in a lot of cases because you senior reshuffling with new technology. It is it is a very difficult business right now I'm in look the copier business down the road. Might not even exist. Yeah yeah you might not mean like you you talk about that you know and the reason that you really have the need for copy machines at this point is regulation that requires you to keep paper cup. So I was gonna Soliai I've been here knows about going paperless. For you twenty years it. And you know it every time I turn around the this staple struck is in front of our building dropped off paper. Most of that is from a regulatory perspective you get you know a lot of it is for that reason there are a lot of businesses. That. Are able to eliminate a significant amount of paper in terms of how much they use now. Let's talk about herbal like bill Blackman is having a really bad day so we'll talk about Herbalife and then you need to explain chuck. What shorting the stock involves and how you do that mechanically. Yes so Herbalife today received a ruling. From the FTC saying that they are in fact not a pyramid scheme. Okay. This had been investigation that was going on for the last couple years now and on the news Herbalife stock popped about 15% actually one point it was a Braun 25%. For the day before paring some of those gains. After some additional trading here from bill Blackman runs a hedge fund he is probably one of the most prominent hedge fund. Managers out there couple bad bets of who is track record in the last couple years has not been strong he has had a couple bad bets in this appears to be. Turning out to be one of them. They make you understand this about hedge funds guys. If the they make very large bets you know when you're building your portfolio you may limit yourself to two or 3% in mainland stock. Like bill Blackman you put. 4050%. This money on a company like out there you know he'll he'll he'll make very large wagers on companies. Yeah and in this case bill Blackman was. Effectively shorting the stock meaning that he was projecting her he was betting that the stock would go down. And for the privilege of doing that nor do that you have to borrow shares in order to short a stock. He was paying around twenty million dollars a year in order to shortstop because of how big his position was that you pay the interest on those borrowed shares. Based on the anticipated volatility associated with that stock car. Correct and so of that and knock. A stock it doesn't move much is gonna charge a lot to borrow no wears a stock like herbal if you may be paying 10% or something like that so you figure he probably IPO. At least a couple hundred million probably more in Herbalife shares. His fund is actually struggled significantly. Over the course of this year they are down about 41 point 1% according to company documents in the first half here. Herbalife is the only short. Out of the twelve positions at the fund owns. But this is not a great day war mr. Akron. And the he's on the other side of that trade is Carl Icahn yes allotments nemesis and these are two guys that. If it's like you know the Bruins in the Canadian that is this is a playground fight for the two of them you know this is look we're out there you know it's recess okay we're gonna do battle over couple stocks in the go back and you do the same thing the next day and Pacman was accused of some pretty nefarious acts during this whole thing well I think in general if you are a an activist hedge fund manager meaning someone who typically uses the media in order to. Boost and supplement your positions in general you are accused of some pretty. DO unseemly axed just because of how you tend to use the media to promote your position. But a big win for Carl Icahn and a big loss for bill act and precious metals on behalf of leader bank this is a message on behalf of leader bank. You know on days like this you can ask yourself the question gee should I have a bigger position on gold and of course. You know gold normally on a day with a major terrorist act would be rallying in price. Well if you wanna buy physical gold I can recommend no better place to go then leader bank to local bank you walk into a branch. You plop down your cash tree can write a check he can buy gold coins you buy precious metals the advice over. He by 110 of an ounce you buy one outs they they sell gold bars. Would every once in terms of precious metals leader bank is the only bank that I'm aware of we can buy gold right out of the branch the phone number for leader bank is told free. 8776917900. That's the bank. That you call to buy gold 87769178900. There website address is leader bank dot com so if you have questions about their gold buying program or their precious metals program. There's information listed on the website leader bank dot com. But if you just wanna talk to somebody if you wanna say say your right here your on your way into town. And you wanna stop by and bison gold points you can call them it's tall furry. 8776917900. I understand chuck that Long Island is getting it would form. They are certainly are they are going to be getting New York State's first offshore wind farm that's going to be able to power up to 50000 homes. We don't know exactly what the cost of this power is going to be at this point simply because. They are in the process. Well it it is but keep in mind that the cost for wind power has fallen dramatically as in the last decade if you work and I know that in the New England area Cape Wind was one of my the things that we had gotten past twenty years quite a bit for the last twenty years it it does go back at it either 9495. Was when that was first discussed. And the the cost of wind power has fallen tremendously. Since then so it's not gonna be a case like Cape Wind was where you're paying four and five times as much. As traditional energy sources but it may be a situation where you are paying fifteen to 20% more than traditional energy sources in order. To have this wind farm built here so. Nintendo and Pokemon we've been talking about Pokemon in the stories continue to emerge. I think in New Hampshire yes a refined of their body yet that's two bodies found as a result of Pokemon. How many more there how many would would those bodies have ever been around the world this game is worse got a touch mall and a you know people are literally dying because. I don't know I don't think you'd be notified a big you are already dead or. I saw us as a rumor or some news report Twitter that somebody walked off a cliff yet to people if you walked off a did I think this is that right. This is the dumbest game and this is the this is the end of the world you need to light don't knock him for it try it try it and occupy it like I. It's like electric cars he hasn't tried in the electric car I and he's not in control of my dad's previously he saw the month I think he's utterly of that numerous times the Nissan coming out with a new electric car does it go over five miles an hour whose 300 miles on a charge business that actually are Lance looks cool is this an actual car Barry mint is Karl I don't know and I feel like the traditional. If it looked it up built up the Chilean navy look up the 2017. Geese on leave the confines of that exists sorry. Then recently. Yet but they re doing well model like right now you by Nissan leaf illegal maybe. And understating the 205 miles something yet the new one that cuts coming out I think next year. Is going to be able to go 300 how does it take to go that long is this like you've covered wagon where you do a twenty miles today if the it does you know the F defeated at night like oxen yet yet the plug it in yet that you so good like we have winner. We have put good hardworking ox and out of jobs that's right the Nissan leaf. Well look I've just unbelievable you know your your criticism of electric cars in the past his nose in other. Well and Nissan coming up with something looks much better but it back to the Pope in so this looks better outlook and right now you don't like it. Now it it doesn't look very good it looks kinda just lay someone difference in taste kinda looks like it Toyota got put a microwave. That's one way to look at it is supposed. I liked. I I idea. That car but let's talk about Nintendo in because yeah we're talking about Pokemon how we got on electric cars up but. Pokemon. Beanie is does hasn't eclipsed Twitter and in terms of numbers user I believe it has now putting Tinder business people would rather. Play Pokemon. And go one to eight. Think about the children now. Guys to wait we can't do that we cannot go and play poker model that I'm going to be we're going I'm going to park. On Saturday. To life and out Rogers one of CU. Come by ambler. But I want to see them because I haven't seen in person you guys. Have you seen poking my sins in person yet seen video of hundreds of people in a park. Have you ever watched the show the Walking Dead yeah it's a lot like that it is yeah it's it's zombies just easier where did you seasons in the city. Oh yeah you see it's it's bad. It's as as as bad as it was with people walking around looking at their cellphones before need is ten times worse now has anybody been hit by a car or bus walking through an intersection yes they have yes there I think there have been at least a couple that have been hit by different vehicles. So it's very police had to issue an alert on Twitter two days ago telling people not to play while they're driving rains. I mean Arlington national cemetery had it here put out a tweet saying don't come in here it's disrespectful. They gave a VE got to get a good prize though there's a good price in the senate there this is the end of the world well written forgetting about your personal opinions. What about money. Was doubled the tender evaluation effective. And you know you've seen a significant runup in Nintendo shares last. Regulation. That it doesn't have lady gave me the I've I'd say the reporting I've seen China. 50% of the analysts are saying this is the you know. Gonna die off in a hurry. In the other 50% are saying that this thing has legs and it's going to be around for a long time and it's augmented reality which it is. Does it whit what happens is when you have your phone. Your fault you're turning your camera on with your phone. And then all of a sudden the Pokemon that you're trying to capture shows up on your full depth. And that's I. It's I think that there are we obviously people on each side I tend to think. Eat it it does have more than just one month of legs I think but I think when we're sitting here a year from now I don't know of the active users are gonna be anywhere near that and the reason is you see these types of things. With new gaming technologies repeatedly he can remember back to win the Nintendo Wii first came sure. And that was I was like phrase I've bought one for my kids in the and they you know what they sold. How long it Howland did actually get used for how long you know ever what's that all I wanna play Wii tennis and one rally we go Iger and it was six in my exam and then it's something new came on same thing. When you talk about wind farm bill first came out on FaceBook everyone out in an ever would set all this the future of gaming social gaming. From that trump tower and order or it's going to be I assume there Vietnam. But no surprise obviously. Well I I don't know the the the Pokemon freeze. He has talked to Steve Robinson who's a producer for Alec are fed up he thinks that this is going to be involved in the election. In other words he thinks that Smart political move will be luring people polls. Yet. I would agree with that I'd I think you're absolutely see people trying to take advantage of that way I think it's Smart to go about it that way I also do I do think that. You know once you get towards. The fallen into the winter in a couple things happened first get go back to school OK and so I think that is going to put. Someone of a clamp down on the amount of time the people can play second is it gets cold. Now and people are going to be running around outside and actually driving around in the snow just because all of there's a bit dead at a something over there you just don't do that. I don't know that could put the they could put the lures and ski mountains and hockey rinks in places like that he do. But you'd like you and it indicates come back you can just go to with ski mountain looking for a poke once they all pretty much he's sure you are why locally. The other going to be glued to their phone what what are you going to be skiing down the hill with your full bios and the Pope this is literally the end of the world. It is this is I don't know that I'm gonna. I'll make an effort to play for an hour this weekend if you on March Gloria is Branson if someone has you know one of those rockets going to Mars at some point put me on it. Yeah I mean and don't let someone with the Pope c'mon go out go there is this sort dome that if it's so dumb why did the stock price double. Because the stock price knows that it's dull like ever like people like dumb stuff have you seen the TV people watch keep it up toward dashing into lake. How's it all like to watch new dollar stock right right so might that's my point I think you might have liked but that doesn't mean it's not dumb Oca. Number not if he can make money on it. Terrorism is running rampant across the globe not something it's just happening in the United States to. Occurred in Israel for years and now it's reared its ugly head again in France and yet. The stock market drop continues this chug along hi everybody Barry Armstrong and truck as auto with you here. On a very warm Friday where we could see a sixth day in a roach with gains in the S and. Yes you certainly could you are you do the the S&P slightly negative right now now down about point 03%. After being up for a much the morning to this point. Dallas don't positive territory NASDAQ is pretty much flat. Now what do you have seen is a sell off in bonds specifically US treasuries the ten year note one point 6% while so we have seen a cell that. Tell you what's what's the message on that I would I would look at that. And I'm trying to think like what I'm trying to glean the meaning from that because if we're one point six in Germany's negative. What is that saying to. It's telling you well. It doesn't tell you a ton in terms of the two areas because it really is more about supply and demand for the currencies rather than anything else. So it doesn't tell you. Anything with regards this. These specific economies it tells you what the projections are for interest rates over that time which you can sort of back in the growth rate somewhat but it's more about what they think. Central banks are gonna do in their respective theirselves they're selling off. I and and rates are going up doesn't that mean in the US that there's an expectation of a little more growth than yesterday you know. You know it's if you if you go back to a year ago the expectation is still less growth than a year ago rate will worried that range on the ten years enemies we're about 2.3 2.4 percent if you went back a year. That's remarkable. Merely because a we if you think back folks seven months ago when the Fed raised interest rates in December of 2015. They projected date they came out in for the entire first quarter of the year. The Federal Reserve the US Federal Reserve came out and said we're gonna raise rates four times in 2016. Chalks now of the opinion were nodding and yet one rate hike in 2016 how quickly things have changed. Yeah I mean I I thought at the beginning of the year you had a chance for one maybe two now. I don't know and look I still think they probably could raise them this year I just don't think they well. What's the consequence what's what is the reason tend not raise rates. On the on the part of the Federal Reserve in December yet is save got. You know you gonna have GDP growth of 2% of Uga I don't do it through the first three quarters. You've got. Pretty tame inflation sub 2% inflation yet but it still. You hear unemployment market's going to be pretty strong at that point stocks are our cell Arabs are rallying tightness. I agree with you I think that they should go at least once this year but this has been a fed that has been cautious. And really historical level in terms of their level of cautious in you know no consideration is very dike they have they have not wanted. Not to upset the apple cup we've got her as a governor and the vice chair Stanley Fischer he's also. Corrected it to dobbs lead the thorn in both from both you Janet Yellen was a good friend of Ben Bernanke's. And Bernanke was. Famously a student. Of the great depression and but he used to concern. But he he is a lifelong remember of the Republican Party in a pretty conservative again I. I strip out when when you take out of politics Ed does the Fed the Fed policy and what they're trying to do mean it is all it has two goals it's again. Full employment and stable prices that is what they are trying to do and so when you look at what Ben Bernanke. Typically thought of in terms of what was most important to him and what he spent a lot of his time studying it was the mistakes that the Fed made during the Great Depression. They're really exacerbated and led to the second leg of in the nineteen usually when they did raise rates too quickly and erase taxes and and they effectively through the country back into a depression at that. Nearly resume came out and depression news' World War II yet. Let's talk about Wheatley at six pieces of economic news and even just address the ones that you think are most relevant. But starting this morning at 830 we got retail sales CPI which is your inflation indicator yet. Capacity utilization. Industrial production. Business inventories. And Michigan consumer sentiments six. I say it that is a big index normally we would've spent an hour talking about. Big day out of those six that we have there three that I think are important retail sales better than expected both in terms of online retail as well as brick and mortar. Very good sign there CPI came in at point 2% as well as the core number coming up point 2%. CPI year over year and how is it 2.3 percent so you are starting to see. Little bit faster inflation that 2% target and that is something that look at the Fed is really serious about their mandate. That probably needs to look at and say OK should we actually be raising rates them. Third piece I think that's important here you talk about industrial production growth he had seen a decline of point 3% in the prior month up. Bumped up two point 6%. This month so waste recovery in industrial production for the month of June there that is a a good number to seat. I think. And again we still need one more month of data but we've been talking previously about how the trained really from kind of marched through May. It was not looking particularly strong. You get another bounced back button you can say that trend is in the past now so you're getting close to being able to say okay. What we're we've kind of clear this and and we've moved past it but. You know it again it's we have one month of data points that is pointing in a positive direction here you still need to see a second to be able to say your past. I'm being told I live in a bubble we're talking about unemployment I think the unemployment situation is improved dramatically. In the last eight years with seven awan says very unemployment strong you live in a bubble. I don't know I and I I'm gonna take exception of that criticism. Because I look at the unemployment situation and and and I granted I'm comparing it to 2008 I'm going back eight years. But you go back eight years track what we re losing like 5600000. Jobs a month there were a couple months realist or the 700000. And you you have job creation. My criticism. Is you haven't had much in the way it much in the way of wage growth note that. I think it's pretty hard to argue that the employment situation hasn't improved. In the last eight years. Out certainly has an in obviously you talk about the issues that are still present today you do have people that are in lower paying jobs and they were before in a lot of cases you do have more people that are part time that he'd like to see when we talked about that you six. They're still are probably between 36 million people that are part time that want to be full time. That in a healthy economy would be full time so pretty. Divergent to and you look at education levels the meaning though it's huge there it is you don't have. A quantifiable skill like I don't know many plumbers electricians carpenters. Pipe headers that are out of work right now. If if you got a trade or if you have any college education. I'd say there's a very high probability. That not only are you working probably make it quite a bit of money. If you look at the job gains that have happened in the last two years 90% of them have gone to people with college education. If you have a less than a high school education you know you have seen job this job losses actually. Rain and so in that and that may be the perspective that may be there's a large segment of the population. That has been left behind because. You know fifty years ago chopped that person could still go get a job right the person you're describing not having high school education it's still go get a job on an assembly line. But the problem now as those assembly line jobs are in China are even with a less than a high school education or be able to order realized that I had friends that used to quit high school lightly Niagara in trial. And there is a huge GM plant right under our high school and I remember kids that would finish the hockey season. And come to the conclusion yet I'm not enough to go pro in the in the great high school in really sure day in and they go work in GM. And realized. That was the that was not uncommon but that was. I was in high school in the 1970s. And we still had the UAW. Reached its peak. In the nineteen cent of that when you repeat membership late sixties early seventies the wages were good. In the job I'll lose wages still bargaining just don't have as many people anymore well I'll tell you the wages were better then where they really yeah. You look at Asia especially if your adjusted for inflation it was an auto worker make now right on the line twenty bucks an hour 25 I don't know it's it's way more than that. When you include full compensation it's closed at fifty you know back in the seventies when you adjusted it was 85 bucks is that right. So is IV news it was a lot. Get hit because the jobs are still in the United States. Now those jobs made it look where GM makes the cars right they're making their buicks the Sullivan in the United States but they're making their buicks in China. Yeah you get a lot of automatic danger manufacturing jobs are overseas. Are when we come back and talk about law firms they are offering cash to help new lawyers pay off their student debt an interesting approach to recording. So I saw a story today chuck in the New York Times and I said to myself you know if if Ahmad graduating law student. This is going to be something that gets me to apply for job with this law firm and evidently law firms are recognizing the kids are graduating with a lot of debt. Yeah and you've seen this has been a major issue for a lot of people who graduate from law school in recent years. The number of positions available has dwindled significantly a lot of those positions are no longer partner track you've had firm said Abdul track. Set up at a number of companies and as such people would take taken out DO 170000 dollars in loans and where to go to law school. Effectively were finding themselves in a job market that didn't offer them aid. Really clear route to repaid. On and so what you are seeing some firms do now is they are starting. To find ways to contribute cash to those. Law school loans in order to make their companies more. And the individual had graduated law school with 24250000. Dollar for the debt and here's the problem. If you didn't go to a good law school. And he didn't pass the bar you never paying that back and and if you didn't get good grades you're never paying that back I mean you're you're as they say SL oil. The only way you can do is if you and became you know public servant of the public defender right like that then you get forgiven after ten years right on the event at that point. But other than that I mean there's not a whole lot of pop outs now to get rid of that now. And and that's the the challenge so with these firms are doing aside from increasing as I was shocked to see some of the starting salaries you. And yet I saw starting a 180000. Dollars. For first year associate now lost that you see some of that on on partner tracked the problem is that a lot of the firms that used to have beat. Partner tracks where you know every one would be on on those near pace skills and so forth lot of and started going dual track and neo on the lower end. You know if you work on that partner tracking chip and getting seventy but I still have to 1000 dollars in loans seventy near 70000 dollars a year. Good amount of money but when you get to a thousand in loans it. You know me you've got a mortgage you know he held on how you need my help from mom and dad it's doing and make those payments and I put some of the blame I mean obviously look I think that people need to. Look at the job market before they are deciding to make that move but I do put some of the blame on law schools which tried to continue to expand just to get more tuition money coming right and and they have been pretty greedy about that saying earlier this is the way to definitely you know you can make sure they show people the starting salaries while in the just not there for everyone the back end. They've also lowered the academic bar yeah in order to get into school and so they have kids that are coming in and then they can't pass the Bard's yet so. It's if it interesting story Ed I think it's good I I think if you're a law firm a big apparent employer. And if you offer it because there's so many more kids graduating with student loan debt today than there were 3040 years ago. And if you're an employer and you want to attract the best of the best. And you say yeah we're looking for kids that you know have degrees in computer science and and and have a high GPA. It will pay two or 300 dollars about torched and I think that's gonna make a difference I think kids are gonna pay attention. Your full is poised to get ten times faster as the FCC approves five G well this can't happen fast enough. From my perspective though by. Phone. I'd I'd love speed when it comes to my films but not cars not my cars nice night about the safe driver. I'm going to be a grandparent very soon so you know like a safety first you know. Effect anyway. But by G. Eddie who knew uzis and we just got four G in our hitting five G in this going to be huge. It is huge it is going to be a yeah wireless beat that ten times faster than what you see. Today we have some of the slowest wireless technology out of the developed world actually people. In American don't realize that we are behind the number of countries as far as like early speed of Wi-Fi networks. Korea's won three it's easy joke it's it's not a big country. And it's it's all it's Eric compact yet they don't have to do a ton of a country the size of Rhode Island with like seven million people that you're you're you're not digging you know and I know that miles. A little. Will the small country. Geographically small country. In population. Norms yes though. I'm gonna just do a quick segue South Korea does take a look at got to prove how wrong I don't think is that wrong actually popular little bigger than room populations fifty million okay. The total land area is about 38000 square miles and connect. Rhode Island by comparison. Has a population of one million and the total area. It is though you are off with a 12100 square miles. But if you could be off why be off by a little bit. If we don't edit it go to Google mail if you could be wrong be run by actress thirty exactly. But yet these these five G speeds are going to be coming. Hoping to have these ruled out by 20/20. To testify G technology are beginning as we speak right now probably the next three to four years down the road all the better you this this coming out of the better Pokemon player five G because of the fast are you better at welcome on the new lord draftees. Well I haven't practiced well do you call them. That could be that could be a winner eight I wonder if you have Pokemon leagues on draft games. I could wind over 56 category is appealing for players you still might lose all the all the Pokemon players from what I understand are all young guys. And girls if it is when you watch them play is it mostly men or is it below and we'll see when critics split. That's hurt on the metal it's yeah I've seen a pretty decent split and that's my daughter if you plan. I'm from witness any in person I've always seem video but apparently checked you talk go go out to a park man. That's aren't there yet. And in that at some video content so he goes to works on their phones now posted on our FaceBook page so how long until we get five. Can be 2020s where you're expected zero the real. Big roll out at this point but you're gonna start seeing it popping up in places over the next several years to mind most the phones at this point. Are built to use five G just if you haven't needed it so he's still gonna need phone which will be out the next year to and then. The the technology as far as the actual towers and so forth are gonna be rolled out relive the next three to five. I I'm looking forward to ten times as fast the stock market. Believe it or not has slipped into negative territory at least the S&P 500 has its down two point. The Dow is up one point the NASDAQ down four but it's over that 5002. In east ham Massachusetts. Let's talk about oil I am I oops curious to get your thought struck on the price of oil. If we see a decline in terrorism. Globally it and is that a possibility that you see is a global. Decline in tourism based on the terrorist activity that's been going on the last eighteen months. We have already seen declines in bookings in Europe largely happening after the concert attacked in Paris. Last November so. You know I don't know how much further decline you would see at this point you know already seen travel impacted somewhat that's already baked in I don't I don't think you can see any major shift there I think you know airlines are already running pretty clean operations at this point. This consumption is still lot a lot of people are under the impression that oil consumption is down year over year. Because prices are if not it's still are still growing we're still consuming more oil than we used. Yeah you've seen some additional in additional consumption there but you know I don't think that you know with what you're seeing. You know we we haven't seen any major shift in demand to this point based on any of the attacks that have occurred I don't under I don't think that this would be something that would cause. Anything different. Like many western firms Procter & Gamble is eyeing new opportunities in Iran. Following the relaxing of trade sanctions earlier this year. But for a Swiss subsidiary of the US consumer goods giant Iran already is a very familiar market. You know the talk about that deal that was negotiated he was last year was in the Iran deal yet. News this this is just another example of why corporate America wants access to Iran. But they do and and Procter & Gamble as a company that had not done business beginning in 2003 with some market research. All the way up to mid 2010. They had done business in Iran for a number of years here and Procter & Gamble is looking to get back into that market. At this point. You know obviously that the projections they have showed a lot of money they showed growing market. Over in Iran at this point. And DO PNG is not going to be the only company. That is interest in going over there I would imagine you're going to see just about any big multinational firm pro ball right to make inroads there bulge tried to do what sixteen billion dollar jet deal. They are and its. Yes Halliburton over there are you you're you're gonna have. You know gee he's going to be in there and he never yeah all the big multinationals IBM up there all gonna wanna do business. There they are it's you know any any of your big firms like that are going to want. To be going over there I think the big thing. That you are going to have to do while work through obviously there still are some businesses in some industries that do require congressional approval for deals the bone one being one of them is an infrastructure stuff is imagining that country's been. Neglected for forty years oh yeah it's it's there have been significant yeah if you US significant pent up latent demand so if you're in that business right supporting infrastructure you think about John Deere caterpillar. Yeah we talked about a couple months ago lot and buyer has made a new offer a 125 dollars share up from 122. And also. More effectively formalizes offer a few days later right Monsanto is reviewing the new offer. Again I I. You know investors in in the market seemed skeptical that you are going to see. This deal get done that he you know Monsanto. Is still trading at a 103 dollars a share. But here's the deal they I don't know if you read the fine print that there's a one and a half billion. Dollar break up the incorporate into the offer that to me I'm looking at that out and that's a big incentive for months into it considers the deal. Disney I think there's pretty serious regulatory. Hurdles in. Yeah I mean there's there's definitely going to be some regulatory hurdles but I do you know it it to Donald Trump is president I don't think he was a stupid I think you'd be too. Why does he doesn't want the Germans owner or food or foods but they don't. Know it's it's 70% of the market. Doesn't matter I I I think I would still wouldn't deed do you disagree you think trump would allow them at the studio through. I don't know how any Republican candidate could say that he wouldn't let this go through if you wanna be about a free market economy. What what what what are you talking about he doesn't want cars built Mexico. Like his on air conditioners built Mexico understandable but I don't understand that this would have to be a deal that you would like go through it. If your concern from a regulatory perspective about anti trust and so forth that's one thing. But if you're simply saying no we don't want this company going to be me of going in being owned by some other. Country look you start to write and other issues than when all of a sudden if you wanna buy foreign company what happens if you cannot let us do that immediately this is what you get into when he had to start going down that world. It's called nationalist. Right. It it's called protectionism and we've seen before it doesn't tend to work out very. Men usually doesn't. Hundreds of thousands of people are getting caught kicked off the food stamp rolls and I got to tighten the best story I've solved it. Yep you are seeing a a bunch of people really again hundreds of thousands kicked off at this point. There was a requirement. That had previously been in now wave during the Great Recession in order to. Effectively try to expand and make sure that people were left behind. During that time and so what you are now doing it what states are now doing. Is putting back in a requirement that able bodied single adults with no children. Find a job within three months of receiving benefits or work an average of twenty hours to weaken or to stay in the program I think it makes touch sense I think we have probably waited too long to reinstate this. Think they had one month I was looking at the month of April trapped almost a million people fell off the food stamp rolls largely because in this in L absolutely largely because this but there's still a lot states that have not implement I don't understand why which is kind of shocking because like again if you are a single person with no kids no dependents and finally Massachusetts and Connecticut have implement. They have been of interest and interesting but yet you have seen. Again I think it was yeah you mentioned April where I think about 773000. People. Fell off the rolls for food stamps simply because. When these requirements were put back didn't. They were no longer eligible for the programs they makes a ton of sense deal. McDonald's is raising prices and going healthy I'm not sure they're going to help. Yeah I I read this dark and read the headline and then heard the story as which would give yourself credit for don't know yet because when you look at the McDonald's salad you realize it's not really that good for you Alley you know. I guess it's healthy is a relative thing. It is a it is a relative thing they are making a couple transitions in order to try to improve the quality of the food okay. They a couple of years ago announced that it that they had begun a transition to use only cage free eggs and chicken without antibiotics. So those are projects that are ongoing right now but Norton do that you do have to have slightly higher prices in order to offset the additional costs there so they can do that. Do you think their customers will accept price increases. May expect our dear let me ask you are is the McDonald's customer. More price sensitive. Then the Starbucks or chipotle customer yes if you pay lecture chipotle or Starbucks clearly they have pricing power. Yes both of those for I think B McDonald's customer tends to be much more. Responsive to changes in price and I think a lot of that is out of necessity because I think when you look at a lot of the people that frequent McDonald's of people. Who stop by you know once a month without a doubt and yet reached a dogma of people that'd there'd be a 123 times a week. I think they tend to be much more price conscious yes another good thing about having grandchildren. I'll get to go back to McDonald's. You get yourself avenue all the nugget and the happiness on the big man now look through them. Double bet they'll double bit supersize me supersize me. When does that anymore but guess what kids do it and they still play in the game and trading cards and watch cartoons so there's obviously an appetizer for that app now what is. They doing to monetize this point how are they going to be generating revenue. Right you've got to it is of pre game like that means free apps it's all dependent on in app. App purchases and if you do you have to do the same there's been you know tens of millions of Putin's soul and revenue generated I have to think it. This doesn't all flowed directly to Nintendo idea and it became developer which Nintendo doesn't speak and obviously getting it tied. You presumably apple Google with the Iowa android. You know lie aspect that they have to be in some money as well the carriers and there's a lot of money to be split up but it does seem as if you have people playing the game. They are buying some of these in apt. You know enhancements that are not just you download for free and a not making it purchased so I think this is a legitimate. Historian is due to the good news for Nintendo's and you throw in that. But not installed yet it was that view smaller Nintendo game console that kind of you know an homage to the all any hats from the 1980s and it's that the fun story here. Now one of the what one of the things that I have trouble with when I look at this and try to figure out whether or not. It makes sense to buy the stock is the fact that. We have never seen a game quite like this before and as a result I think anyone who's trying to say this is the amount of revenue they will or will not get. You have to take with a grain of salt is because we've never seen anything like this would you agree. Yeah I think you know I think that you what is very inching here is that internal document go. I don't think a lot of people heard the term augmented reality that kind of mixture. These cartoon characters in real world settings you can do it under Stalin you don't need to put on. And populist ads that are some other device you really can just use. A standard policy you have these fictional cartoon characters appearing in real life settings as opposed to you know some sort of PD EU scheme. Type environment and it's it is interest there hi I interviewed a few days ago about this he you know Cedar Fair and the big gap being park amusement park operator. And they actually. Any arcane that they are running at their flagship. Parking Ohio that they debut before procurement policy yesterday rule. About Pokemon it's brought more attention to their game and people realizing what augmented reality actually hit. As intent given any clues as to. What are going to be the next roll outs in order to try to keep this from becoming a three month fad to try to keep people playing this in the next year and beyond. Right I mean from what I have seen and heard the big issue right now is that now something that is available world why he added my understanding that you know they're going to be. We're only out in other markets as well so I think it does have more legs than maybe being. You could not phenomenon the question does become does Nintendo. Work we have partners. To try to maybe do similar. And augmented reality games for other popular franchise obviously you know dot com. Barbara I don't know if there's necessarily something. That would lend itself is as seamlessly as Pokemon the whole catch Fareed he's got to catch a ball. Poll you deem and trading cards and cartoons are based on these humans. Trying to catch these weird creatures further out of battle so I think it does make sense. To have these games be air augmented reality Exterran I'm not sure or whether or not there will be author franchise that led themselves as naturally.
