This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day your city your world. Stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. What did you gain it's going to beat Kerry and chuck with from here on a rainy Tuesday in. You know there's so many stories that I wanna cover and talked about today. I was don't know where to begin serving the start Europe talking about UBS. First quarter profit decline of. 64%. Banking is a tough business to be in domestically here in the United States it is the rule in terms of being in the banking business in Europe. Yeah I think Indy in Europe right now it is a very difficult time should you be in banking the additional regulation you have there as well as dealing with a negative interest rate environment. Have made a very. Very difficult industry to be in. At this point right now first quarter adjusted profit up before tax came in at one point four billion Swiss francs or right around one point five billion dollars. Down from a profit of 2.3 billion Swiss francs in the same period last year. The big thing that you're seeing there the a lot of excess capital these banks are holding I UBS has what's called a tier one capital ratio 14%. What that means they're holding about 14%. In pretty much pure cash reserves which is awful high compared to where you've seen. In recent history you go back to the mid generally in thousands you're in that 78% range there's a lot of extra cash. And they get to these are nothing if he'd know her work for holding cash. They don't make anymore on their cash than you make on your cash for any of our listeners make on their known in some cases they're actually paying money on that cast because the the rate structure over New York right now so it's it's very difficult time to BP. A bank in Europe and in particular you take a look at UBS. The stock and say OK you know when what is what are my actually seeing. From UBS down about 7% on this news here. And beyond that you know it's it's simply is just not a stock that is traded with any type of authority recently it's just it's very difficult. To think that things are going to get better for them in the near future. Company that is doing well as Rhode Island based CDS they beat on estimates. And their stock is up a dollar ninety two's I understand it they had a really good quarter and they are developing their nursing home business and that's where they're making their money. Yeah and the and that's going to be an area of major growth when you look at the demographic trends that we're seeing in this country every person I've ever met says I'm never going to go into a nursing home and yet every year we are all people see. That were building more nursing homes and they are all full so it's an area that I think makes a lot of sense for CBS to push into. They did season strong growth there CBS by the way. Know people been paying attention but this the company that's worth a 114 billion dollars. I mean it's. We often talk about it like it's still in a kind of our local CVS we all remember back when it was just a new wing and company and back when you know no one outside of New England really knew about them. In the last five years that this size this company has quadrupled in terms of market. When they're consistent if you locked in to a CVS store in Phoenix Arizona it's the same as you know what you're gonna get if it in natural consumers like Delhi today. They end and I guess Walgreens are the two dominant players yet there there's been a lot of consolidation there CVS a 113 billion dollar market cap Walgreens 88 billions of CBS about 1520%. Bigger right now he'd never see those two merge because he wouldn't be allowed to wind today not a chance not a chance all but. You know they put a good product on the table they run competitive stores they've they've moved more towards the the health care side of things which I think is going to be a boon for them over the next decade and overall very well run company that continues to do a lot of things right. Do a lot of robotics. Are they really viewed their back office you go to the back with pharmacists are oh that's going largely a product out there. The checking out as the Angela robotic for five years you have been used in the kiosks there for awhile and an even think of that is automation at this point is kind of how it works but it goes out and auto day. Today is a day where we're seeing a lot of auto sales come in Fiat Chrysler. They are sales coming it domestically here in the United States. Up five point 6% now we thought they would have a good quarter we expected a number of four point 3%. Fiat beating expectations up five point 6% in addition. He got entering into a relationship. With Google to produce self driving veins varied interest. Yet Google continuing to develop partnerships with a number. Of different companies at this point we've talked before about the ones that they've Bob and billing with was fort I think it as well as. It wasn't them directly but I believe lift got involved in GM gifts and you're continuing to see a lot of these partnerships being built here. What we saw fort also soft three point 6% growth to 229000. Light vehicles sold in the month. GM actually saw sales fall 3.5 percent in the month due will pull back on weakness. Let's go back to afford story bill because they grew by three point six but the expectation had been three point eight. Yet and we missed what they did see though is the their suvs did see their best April sales ever and so S and everybody's got to be strong. Their F series pickups 70000. In the month for the second straight month now so there you look at the pace of that F series is on right now 840000. Units that's. What I noticed he was GNP as you mentioned there sales down 3.5 percent we knew they're going to be down we expected General Motors sales to be down one point 7%. But what GM is doing is they're saying look we're not gonna give a deal to hurt anymore we're not gonna give the deal. To Avis or budget or any of these. Rental agencies because we don't make any money and we we wanna be profitable so they're downsizing. Their operations they are. Making their cars. More. I guess a hot commodity if you will but they're not discount is not willing to do the fleet sales and we'll see. We'll see when they come out quarterly earnings as to whether that strategy works. Yet the pull back on fleet sales was the big thing even though there sales fell 3.5 percent on the month their retail sales were actually up 3.3 percent that's the type of business they want to be getting in Cuba says get the service business as well what he had to services vehicles and they make huge profit and beyond that we had talked when was it maybe a month or two ago about the struggles that Avis Hertz were having due to competition from immigrant rights here he serves as being cheaper for business travelers. And GM may be seeing the writing on the wall that at some point. Those types of you know you traditional rental car business. Like the way of the total hence their investment in. You know it's 500 million dollar investment and let that is not a small investment know it in and I think you talk about the business that could be effectively you remember fifteen years ago he still had you know video stores you'd go to to rent dvds and so forth. Rental cars may be the video stores. The next little I don't know I don't think that is if you're going somewhere for a long time when I travel. All wrecked car going to be here for a week like. I dislike him are of people like you needle what you need to do long term rental giving example when I traveled to 35 bucks today. Not when you include all the stuff. Not act different cheaper there is zero chance that you can get a car 35 dollars today when you include everything I noticing Corey which I do pretty. Paper and Colin Powell. I shall meters because I I don't believe view. I don't think I've. I I hope that this matter has rented cars like I know that you can't get anything for one dollar you don't do that expensive cities you know they'll have rented cars in lake Salt Lake City and 35 dollars today I see when he gets you gets you little Suzuki that barely fit three people on the break look it up by year compute. Saying the published prices saying would you include all the taxes and Jerry and everything and you would it is the thousand bucks a month. It just doesn't seem right to me bucket late I've never seen a card that you can read that cheaply. I think I think there's a real chance that you're big rental companies. Not necessarily are gone in ten years but far. Twenty to 30% the size they are today. Ya I mean the business traveler your point is the business traveler doesn't like using the rental car in and frankly I wouldn't either fight is going into. If if I'm flying to Chicago for a day I don't wanna rent car. I'd rather be picked up because it it takes so much time to rent a car that's probably get you fly into Logan Airport. Think about this he flying. And you have to get in a box it takes you to a separate building. In any of the week and a line to get your card means very inconvenient to rent a car and then it's the same thing when you're coming back at the end of the day. I just think the combination of your ride sharing services and the eventual automation that EC there renders rental cars largely unnoticed and have -- on a guest Honda sales up 42 what do they do what is pond to have the big by the giving cars away their sales up fourteen point 4% Nissan up 13% as well so I just cute Japanese manufacturers both doing very well there now you know in I don't know specifically why those two Lott had such strong sales there but the the overall numbers here. You know if you see these for the for other manufacturers that are set to report later today. Your expectation here is that you gonna be back on that seventeen and a half million a year pace. You know that's I think that's about where you get a tap out isn't that seventeen half. Eighteen million pace just has the two things that need overlap people who want cars are people who can afford cars there's only so many people that fill both those criteria. I have evidence that you are going to be paying more for your lobster the summer when we come back that's we're going to be talking about the price of lobster. Ace Barry so it leader rink we actually think a lot of real estate developers and property owners in the Boston area and some of our larger clients. Came into the banking and we teed him coming with huge wads of checks. It's we thought about you know why why he's in this teenager still bringing so many checks that they. It's it's a simple thing you know and in so you have property in Cambridge cut. Three unit building. And each unit's three bedrooms. You may have nine checks yet to keep track of just that one property right so budgets college student exactly so if you have three properties that's point seven check starts it starts out pretty quickly. So would zero in what we've done is been we've allowed a landlord to invite their tenants. The tenant signed up we deduct each share of range from the tenants and send one east each payment. That landlord for each unit. So it makes me very clean and simple it's very clearly described as to what the rent is being paid for which property Corus which unit number. Were registered today and it in. Well chuck you you seem to have set off a firestorm of comments related to rental cars. Somebody texting Ian. Wrong track it's called Priceline at the shop talk when you rent car. 603 suggesting that he just rented C Volkswagen Jetta. For two weeks in a constant 22 dollars today somebody else just got back from or Aruba in the paid 720 dollar for the month. I just think the vast majority rental cars don't come anywhere near 35 dollars day. Well you may find itself okay usually like we have one from four escalate saying it was you know 55 dollars a day all inclusive I mean. There's I think in general when you talk about getting you know rental car that you can get more than two people and you you generally talking somewhere in that fifth. He's sixty dollars a day. Twitter would you get on Twitter. News you are yet to drop shares of Twitter fall to thirteen dollars and ninety cents per share a new all time low. But the social media Stockton. Turkey could bearish on Twitter for I think twitters and fortunately had a business within 23 years out of the business while they go out of business people yet millions users. Doesn't mean that they can make money on it you don't think they can make isn't it isn't a lot of their cost now in terms of expansion they couldn't they just say well we're gonna grow organically. And not have a lot of doctors invest a lot in infrastructure. Well the problem is that there overall model is showing almost no growth right now I mean they finally grew subscribers can last quarter after two quarters of declining subscribers are not not even subscribers users. How can they not monetized and Facebook's done such a darn good job because the very thing that attracts people most of Twitter which is the ability to see what ever you want without any filter up effectively prevents Twitter from doing that yourself FaceBook monetizes. Is if you want someone to see things on FaceBook. You have to pay for that privilege essentially because if you don't. Your post that you put up on FaceBook are going to be seen by small percentage of people to follow. I Twitter if you follow someone. You you see everything that they hoax so what people who have done in order to advertise instead of paying Twitter bunch of money to post an or whatever which is going to be an effective anyways. What what people have done. Is they've said let me find someone who's got a million Twitter followers and I'm gonna pay that person directly to Wear a necklace that that's mine. To where you know pair of sunglasses that are mine in Twitter gets cut added the so win it putter change that some. Is there any way they can modify their business model there in the process right now and I think it's gonna effectively kill. Now so that they're trying to change to what's called an algorithmic feed that FaceBook uses up all of algorithmic feed means folks is that. Instead of seeing everything that someone posts and you'll only see certain things that people post in order to incentivize them to spend money to advertise their products and that so. The problem is when you move to that. The thing that attracted me most Twitter is I concede the knew the exact news I want. Right whenever I want to when he moved to an algorithmic feed. You lose that you don't see everything necessarily that you want to in the 'cause that they're getting some push back and I think you're eventually gonna have pretty steep exits from Twitter and it's gonna. Eventually died a I think that's where those. Larry the subtle little bit about real estate. You know at some point in your life you bought your first home and how do you buy your first time I remember when. My wife and I bought our first it was a condominium in New York. And we bought it. Jointly and with rights of survivorship. Would you. Get older these different ways that you should consider owning your real state should view only in a trust perhaps or maybe you should own it in an entire year. It just different ways to own real estate. It comes into play. As you are going through the state planning process Cushing and Dolan. It's terrific guy and I can tell you how you can receive it free of charge just total web site. It's WWW. It's legal exchange showed dot com again that website address legal exchange show. Dot com to receive that guide this month from the law firm of Cushing handle. Well let's talk about lobster fishing. The number of adult lobsters in New England south of Cape Cod was estimated 2013. To be about ten million which is 15. The total from the late 1990s. Scientists. Issued a report last year that said the historic. And economically important species is shifting northward. In large part due to the warming of the ocean so got a lobster shortage south of Cape Cod. Yeah and it's effectively. Causing us some new were regulations to be discussed here in terms of when an intense right we're going to be able. To catch lobsters talking about things such as closed seasons yeah closed areas. Cutbacks in terms of the number of traps that people are allowed to use stricter standards and terms of minimum and maximum size for our harvest ball lobsters. But this is all occurring primarily for him you think about all of our listeners from you know Cape Cod and you Rhode Island we've got a number of affiliates in in Connecticut where not only are they employed in that. Business in the lobster business but there were also. A unity day if they're not employed and they might be consumers of I would think lobster prices are going to be higher this summer especially in southern New England than they did in the past has yet to transported from mean. Yeah I mean the biggest. 800 pound gorillas still Maine Maine does have the highest lobster production out of any state in the country so while you are seeing a decline here. Maine has more than made up for the decline is pretty significant though in the in southern New England don't talk about the last fifteen years. The catch from Connecticut lobster ms. phone for about two point six million pounds in 1999 down to a 127000. Pounds in back and 2014 sets in 95%. Decline now now may still produces you're talking you know millions upon millions of pounds of lobster when it's all said and done but clearly you know you do have some issues down in the southern part of New England. Some of them related to overfishing some of them relating to change water temperature so you've got some different factors playing into it but a lot of people they'll probably going to be affected by the new regulations that go into effect. I wonder you know we don't have any information we can't say he was gonna add a dollar to the pound the cost of the pound lobster. But if they have to transported from Maine to Connecticut is an added cost I gotta pay for the trucking and transportation at those walks. Yeah that definitely has a mean part of it though if you end up with a bumper crop up in Maine this year that might offset it on his and fuel prices are down. Yeah there's there's some different factors that are at play here I think you'll probably CH slight bump I don't think the average person will really notice it who's buying you know lobster either VO lobster rolls or whole lot. Time for trivia today the Indiana primaries that were doing trivia about Indiana. Actor James Dean was from the Indiana. In what movie did James Dean play high school student. Jim Stark if you know the answer to that question text us your response 68680. Is our text number first listener with the correct answer wins a prize. In what movie did James Dean play high school student Jim Stark right now we're joined by rich young. He's a director of external communications on behalf of Verizon. Andy joins us now to talk to us about the status of the strike. Rich welcome to the program Daria. I am doing quite well this morning I hope you guys are as well. We are we are we we are we've talked to union members about the strike in workers. We've never had a conversation. With the company so your spokesman or dispersant. Where are you guys in terms of negotiating with the striking Verizon workers. Will tomorrow will be the 22 day of the strike so the sort of been going on for three weeks where during the work week. Public truly disappointing that we put several solid offers on the table. And they are continually rejected by the unions keep in mind. Where it's Thursday we put significant. Revised proposal was able to our last best offer it included. 87 and F percent wage increase. Its content as job security or lay off protections for the back to majority of these employees. Very generous retirement benefits including a defined pension and before OK with the company match. And health care that you would I would be envious so it's a great offer. Whereas in the union to go back to work with a meaningful dialogue in order to get our employees back to work the ball in the court. So what why won't they take that offer you what you describe truck and I talked about this yesterday. Win when we saw that offer come last week we both said he had actually looks like a pretty fair offer. They've the union must have something they don't like is that the money is at the health insurance is that I heard from one union Fella. That he didn't like the idea that you could ship them to Pennsylvania. To work for two months a year. Yeah I mean some of those offers us some of those proposals including that one have been taken off the table as long as the union did gives us the flexibility in the better ways to operate our business for instance right now we are very limited from. Taking a cold one state and transferring back customer called what other state doesn't get the other person may be better capable of Italy Nicole. We're we're in a highly competitive environment we're trying to streamline and improve customer experience. Yet worse saddled with these legacy contract provisions that were put in place. Fifty years ago the unions need to realize we no longer operate in the rotary phone error bull moose are no longer to be expelled. Where they're probably wireless area yet we don't have these contract contract and a constraint. That are decades old I don't know what were applicable today. Rich are you getting cut customer complaints. From your Internet service but it hey Europe you know customers that buy Wi-Fi from the UN hardline service. They've been able dissatisfied ya your customers. That only we have been able to satisfy satisfy customers keep in mind we deployed. Over 20000 employees in the wireless footprint would trade which there was from Massachusetts to Virginia. Are hard are these employees. As proficient as someone who's been on the job for twenty years obviously we rather ever Forsythe workhorse back to work but that's up to the union leadership to make that happen. And how long can you hang in. We are preparing for the long term I'm just. I would try to weed outsource that sending several thousand additional. Non medical management and contractors through our training systems built the specialized training center in Virginia. As well as online trading for call center operations. We needed it would serve purposes we're talking about the sustainability of a business that's been on shaky ground of yours and you well know. Many Americans have given up they're they're also they no longer have it there will be able to wireless. Yet we're saddled with some of these rules that were put in place when would you really had a multiple community makes the most sense that we need to make changes. Rich at what point will you hire permanent replacement workers are you allowed to yet didn't end is that something you would do in. July air base you know because right now you got 3638000. Workers out on the street. When would you say you know enough is enough we're gonna just hire replacements permanent. I mean it's it's way premature to do that Goodell wrote that a lot of talk about that a Walker's and the truth is we have a very dedicated. And skilled work force that's I don't strike we want them back. It's a pretty union leaders to bring them back there the one who took the battle straight three weeks ago there was federal and offer federal mediation the day before the strike we agree. The union said no talent they're court to get its work force who we want back on the job. We want them back back court today. And what about the new workers themselves of any of them contacted the company saying hey we wanna come back but our union leader people let us. As level well of course it's always a challenge will one want to come back to work when they're on strike you know the fact of the matter is we've had well over 12100 employees. Welcome back to work since the strike began at the percentage basis. That's unprecedented. The reality is it's three weeks without a teacher yeah west Friday's summit is the latest bout Saturday story so these employees who lost their health insurance. That the unions are saying they'll pick up the health insurance cost and applied. But where it strikes I was from anywhere in Europe that's majority of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. These folks have now called three weeks without a paycheck they need to risk their union leaders what's going on here at what we do to get ourselves back on the job. So you're saying that 12100 workers have crossed the picket line. Actually it's more than 12100 workers don't get the exact number later on but that was as of Friday it every day we're seeing great word police. Cooke crossed the picket line come back to the work which job below. I did not know that I did not know that rich thank you are. Well you know it's speaks volumes you know people leave to your point they're missing paychecks. If you've got a family in your miss and your health insurance you may not have any choice but to go back. Don't know anywhere but it could certainly got our attention to force anyone to come back because I wanna come back we respect the rights of our employees. To go out on strike. The ticket as long as they do so awfully. There we go other challenges we go there are hardship it is important also hardships. For the 20000 employees and we've brought in and around the country is stolen for these folks. But that civility is important week when you look at the offering but have typically offer I mean of the goat today it is getting a guaranteed. Seven and have percent wage increase. Actually retired here layoff protection. That much more that they offer that's on the table that the offer that things. The unions need to take a serious look at this and do what's right lower. Rich we appreciate your time thanks for joining us we may call you back in keeping on speed dollars and if this thing progresses. You've got whenever I thought. Thanks that's rich young Verizon. And he makes some good points you know he DD. UC both sides of the straight truck. Well you cannot think on one hand you certainly understand and and from my perspective I think some of the things regarding the union workers pushing back on on some of the travel provisions that were in there they go they pulled that away and what. We don't we don't know exactly what the full thing says that this other names so they could. Well we don't know exactly they don't have. Have you wouldn't what the offer it well what they're saying is let's say you have an outage in New Jersey they wanna be of this and New York guys are dangers. To fix you know and I'll be like sand. To a guy that lives in Attleboro. Gee we need to send you to Providence to fix problems and you don't know exactly where you know you could be talking about you know a couple hours away when it's all said and done so it's yeah there's definitely some things in there that you have to play around I look at it from the perspective of you know clearly and we say this in a number of industries when companies are doing well is when it's most difficult to get these contract because Verizon is making an awful lot of money right now very profitable company. And certainly employees do want to be able to participate. In the growth the company on the other hand you look at is okay. The average you know salary and benefit package these workers 130000 dollars go that's being disputed by the union badly they're saying it's not that I need. Generally I and things like this I tend to side with management in terms of total compensation because usually you know capacitance and can you see how expensive it is that to hire people and and I think that in general look if you're not happy with the offer Verizon's giving you go find something better out there would witty. Were you surprised when he told you that 12100 workers had crossed the picket line and I found that shock. So that is what about two and a half percent of the overall number sorry 6000 out our guests and a 12100 miles of about 3% of the people that are on strike have that helped across any thought at all helped the company a lot because that you put out the big fires they've got skilled workers to go out solve the big big. You know problem I wouldn't be surprised in the next week you see that number well the problem. Right in nineteen your goal without a paperwork and get the white is saying you hate. How much longer unit you know time to get back to work but look you can you can go one paycheck and kind of figure out ways to make things work. When you go that second paycheck and all of a sudden their mortgages do where the rent is due. That's where it really starts to become a Yankee campaign year kids the duke played baseball I mean there's a lot of things in these are families. Relying on those paychecks every two weeks exactly so I think you know you certainly see both sides of the equation to. My big thing that I come back to at the end of the day. The landline business is still a dying business for prize. And but it still includes a truck near Internet service which I am I think it's critical I mean I've got Verizon at my house site that give back goes down and they can't fix it. I'd be. Very ups but you have other options you can always go get someone else yep how long's it take Comcast about simple you can you can get about the next day I mean if if you say look don't give you my business today they'll be out there and it gave no problem no questions asked us so that's the danger for the company. There that that's our cost a risk for Verizon to you know it to not make it better. It is but as you move more toward streaming that business is going to become less lucrative as well because the amount of data that you're streaming so I think. There's again that business is going to dramatically shift in the next five to ten years because of the movement to wireless from my wired Internet I think that's going to be a major shift that you see there you're still gonna have to have you general junction and so forth that's why Verizon wants to maintain. That wired business it's not so they can go get that last mile in the homes it's they can continue to have access to telephone poles and things like that in all the junction boxes so they can. Essentially manage their network in that way. But that business can change on an. Rebel without a cause that was released in 1955. And meant to highlight the moral decay of American you. But he did it say about the American youth today are much worse if this. Larry from East Sandwich had the right answer their their takes on one of our financial exchange T shirts and it is now time for a little bit of stock talk here on the financial exchange were joined by JP Bennett from the Motley Fool JP thanks for joining us today. I. JP couple stocks talk about let's start first with oak tree capital group most of our listeners probably are not familiar with them. Who gives a little bit of information on what exactly is that they do. Okay oh she is an alternative asset managers that really kind of built their name and investing in distressed debt. And so. Basically they generate revenue anyways the first on is obviously management fees are assets under management. And around 70% of of that comes from closed in on. Essentially locked in capital. They also are an incentive income primarily from a closed end fund against their clients do really good. They'll do really good that it is kind of an alignment and interest there and then the last one is and investment. Net income both in their own fun they invest a lot their own front. And they also make other strategic investment like proper example. Today invested and took a 20% stake in double line which is and I'd just become much. And they've paid around twenty million for and over the past five years they've actually argument he's about a 150 million in income back and the last I heard that men take that bat investment is currently worth around 900 million. Announced that it doesn't really go to that basically that if the behind went is that you know we don't really focus on the short term result. I'll what you speed give a date and other financial is open. And the past couple of the year they've raised a lot of money they've raised around what was or 23 billion in 2015. And so as they find opportunities to put that money to work you're really going to respect to the kind of all three back. The of the business there to take off and around thirteen billion of capital that they currently have. Is it invested and reached the point which generating. Management is yet so there really is if you can kind of you know investment and and have a long term mindset is really kind of a good run right at these guys going forward. JP one thing that I see with this company is Baird dividend tends to vary quite a bit from quarter to quarter it's not something that's necessarily dependable as that something that anyone investing. In this company should be focused on. Yep it's something to keep in mind because basically what they do is they've basically pale all their acts. The cash because they don't really need it right if they have a really good year and maybe aren't a lot of great investment. The shareholders are gonna be beneficiaries of that because they're going to return to shareholders in the form of dividend. But if there's a year where maybe they they and they are realizing their investment because like a lot of their investment take a couple of years right. And on the Specter has produced proof of these guys if there's a bit of a lenient terms of realization that the dividend will be nearly as strong they don't have a committed payout ratio in terms of the stock price so to speak it more terms of their financial results. Very good now the second company that we have here's a company called advantage incorporated. Probably another when the most of our listeners have heard of but probably one that they've actually. Used at some point even if unknowingly. Exactly right we are now. About like the master card that these very but these guys they deal with digital payment but they're more behind the scene that basically that the second largest. Merger and choir and a budget and debt to acquire by a number of transactions in the US. And essentially what that means is that this is a company that's responsible for authorizing. And about dating transactions and then subsequently clearing them for merchant. They are. Try and focus on some of the mark merchant. And Nash hit a process that are nineteen billion transactions that merchant customers. And on the financial services that the business they process. Four billion. Transactions or their financial customers and have basically a decent here it is. Kind of the same beast this format the card in either right cash is still king account where. Block around roughly 40% of transactions but over time we think that that's gonna kind of shift in favor of digital payment in these guys Eric. Investing heavily in trying to kind of the latest. Solidify their leadership position they were the one at a spurt here in the US to get certified by the of them mastic our American Express all the major car companies. To process EMB transactions which that the chip and hippocratic that the transaction. And what we've been here is over the past few years they've really been able to kind of to grow really quickly gain market share according to a recent he has been Betty they've won more market share over the past five years than any of their other competitors. I expanding from around 13% market share to over 19%. And 2015. Forget what JP thank you very much for joining us today. JP Bennett from the Motley Fool takers on those two companies should you want do little bit of research on yourself oak tree has the ticker 08 K. Very active has the ticker. V and TV credit card processing. A lot of money that someone's got to process that every time that you swipe predictor card. That someone on the back in the makings of that actually does the right thing rate would have charges. He's your retailer. Accepting a MasterCard was 3% they kicked back to the company generally I believe visa and MasterCard are between one and 2% amex's typically had higher fees usually somewhere between three and 4%. So it depends on the credit card network that you're using there are depends on the size of the charge as well one of them that you're doing to 3000 dollar credit card charge for some furniture. It might be lower cost than if you're doing a fifty dollar write generally that's more on the debit cards side does it seem minimums on credit cards a lot of times you don't. But debit cards certainly do and that's something that was discussed heavily during the regulation which 67 years ago. And oil prices down 2%. To 4385. Thanks for tuning in to this hour of the financial exchange featuring chuck is ought to. And very Armstrong from our insurer match. Dot com studios. This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong in chunks are. You're exclusive look good business and financial news affecting your day your city your world stage and. Warmed and today about economic and market trends plus breaking business news every day. And the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and show so. Ladies and gentlemen we are in the midst of a stock market sell off the Dow down 182. Points. You know we've covered a lot of stories. Yesterday and today truck and I don't know that I see any compelling reason for markets to be selling off to this degree. The big thing we got some data out of China this morning that was a little bit disappointing you could be seeing a reaction to that just based on what we're seeing in foreign exchange markets with the yen strengthening yes that's the kind of thing that I think you're seeing here. The big concern remember in all of this is China giant jars the country that you have to be most concerned about right now the debt it has the greatest downside possible. Okay both in terms of the scale of it in the likely. The possibility of a prolonged downturn in China far greater than any other country that we're dealing with that as any influence on the world. And how they deal with that term. Yeah I mean you've you've never seen China have to really deal with a situation like this in the last 25 years in the last time that China really had to deal with a prolonged. You know period where things were going well they had a great leap forward which we all know that didn't really turn out very well four and number Chinese people's though. Thank you look at it it's it's there's certainly not in a situation where they're like Venezuela. But he you've got to slowing economy. GDP he's running they're claiming it's running six and a half 7%. And that's always a debate you know how much growth to be really have because. We don't know for fact with their numbers are. Yeah Venezuela you can make the case is more of a symptom of what's happening to China now than anything else because Venezuela very much a commodity driven right tree. China having a commodity slowed and they just don't have the demand that they thought they were going to so I think. All eyes and rightly should be focused on China at this point just because I think they have the most question marks and they are the biggest economy with those question Marlins. And that's I think why you're seeing the the sell off today you look at that the two things that have driven selloffs in the last year got oil in China. China is the one that we're seeing today. Yet oil prices down I mean this is good for you at the pump I mean you've been paying if you. Think about we pay for your last tank aghast yours to own nine to 229 depending aware you buying it. And right now oil prices down 2% at 43 85 gold under thirteen hundred dollars an ounce Euro 115 in the ten year treasury. This is an indicator chuck ten year treasury at 17 line. Play interest rates are low. Yes still continuing to CI no real impetus for interest rates to be moving up significantly. Even if you look at shorter term rates the six month treasury right now point 37% suggests that somewhere. But halfway through this you know next six months you should see a bomb so you play that out he's OK is it is a June as of August 1 of those two year you're likely going to see a bomb based on what the rate curves talent. Well we'll see. I was shocked when I saw this deal that United Technologies. Negotiated with the aerospace machinists union. It is it's a good contract for the existing workers of the union. But they. They walked away from the defined benefit pension plan which I find remarkable this day for new hires for new hires yeah the union. The international association. Of machinists said 82% of the voting members approved the agreement. Which covers a thousand workers more than a thousand workers at the Windsor locks plant. They're getting a good pay rates are getting 12%. Over five years but. It ends pensions for new hires. And the union negotiators. Were vehemently opposed to that. The United Technologies I think this is a big win for you TX. Yeah and India talk about what these workers are getting paid the union according Q was there spokesperson. The average hourly wage for these workers at 35 dollars an hour right now that pretty good paying jobs that doesn't include the additional benefits that you get in so not at all personally add that up you're probably talking somewhere in the fifty to 55 dollar an hour range when you include all benefits there. Not a bad contract that added to pick up more than health care costs to workers as you said they are the biggest thing that they're giving up is that pension for new. On and I think. Given what they were able to negotiate in terms of its five year contract in two and a half percent bumps in pay every year so. You look at that 35 dollar an hour wage and say okay. Five years from now that's going to be up to forty CC in nice bump over that time period there. And that I think the biggest issue here chuck Hughes get rid of that pension. You know the stock market is going to investors are gonna like that is they're gonna say he gives us certainty as it relates to labor costs I think it's pretty fair contract. I think it's a pretty fair contract. They have another one to deal with that Pratt and Whitney. Yeah if it later this year they do that's going to be epic coming up in its either August or September I can't remember exactly where. But yet this deal getting this one done I think really does. Allow the company to move forward with some certainty the next five years and they never after a visit that pension. Yeah that's yeah that's never gonna be something that's in negotiations ever again it doesn't help them financially during the next five years were helps them news. You know twenty years from now. That it hasn't dramatic impact on here longer than that mean you're talking with the first people coming in who are gonna happen is that retiring for thirty years right that he. Time for trivia. We're doing trivia based on the in an Indiana because today's Indiana primary day. The Indy 500 or Indianapolis 500 is held annually. In what suburbs. Of Indianapolis. Tough question where is the Indy 500 held in new in what is the name of the suburbs. Of Indianapolis where the Indy 500 is held our text number is 68680. Should you happen to know the correct answer to that question. Sumner redstone this is sat Sumner redstone is going to be deposed. On his in this case this litigation. Then he's going through with his former girlfriend. And boy from all accounts track. If this isn't going to go. Yet they're going to allow the judge has permitted each side Hsu was doing fifteen minute videotape deposition. Of Sumner redstone here and by all accounts he's not someone who is you know readily available and able to do this type. Of well you but the family is claiming. Bed of his own free volition last fall remember he made the decision to leave his girlfriend and not give her that health care property. She's suing in California saying. Hey he wasn't competent to make that decision and they effected the family with the claim that the of them played their fears it basically was kidnapped as it. Honestly it's all too much drama for me to even like there's so many moving parts at this point though like I look at anomaly. As 92 I just you know it's it's beyond my ability to figure out what's actually can't speak from file court. I mean hey it'll be I'll be very curious to see you mean he could if he didn't. Have a good morning. And do a strong deposition that he could put this whole thing to bad guys say I was confident last fall I didn't want hers my guardian. And and you know I want my daughter to take care if he can communicate that the story goes away. In the army again there's there's more moving pieces here and I know what to do with you know it's it's. I'm not good with these type of family situation that I can't tell what's actually well nobody. Nobody can that's lighted and I think it's a gutsy move on the part of the judge to say that you have stated you might see that they taillight. If he's not competent to to do the videotaping the failings of settled next week that it does to avoid the the whole scene body because then it's an because it. Problems stockholders can remember he's control he got voted Dem vote controlling rights to several large publicly traded companies and is this is a big story. We've got news on where you can test out the populace rift. Video were virtual reality. Hardware Tucker and I tried it a couple of weeks ago that we loved it. And now truck is not a all you're gonna have to do is starting on May seventh they're going to be 48. Best buy locations where you're going to be able to go to trial the populace risked its. Doubt I'll tell you this much and definitely gonna go tried out aria probably not buying one right now just because I don't think you gonna have the content that I want right away and I don't wanna pay the expense of just gonna kind of sit there. You know us and expensive. You know. Bookend or something like that in my bookshelf but I do wanna try meat I do wanna try it out and see you know what it's actually like there the. Early users of this type the technology always paid supremely because this is expensive this is like. Two grand time girl and yet the the device in and of itself is 600 dollars but I need to computers that's able to handle a lot of the software and that's probably an additional twelve to 15100 depending on which you know what kind of specs you want there and if you wanna buy games great games are going to be expensive exactly so there's there's a lot of different cost that's going to you know be factoring into this I'm probably about two years away from buying something I have what I wanna for. Is the video content not to gaming content what the video content for things like sports and things like that have you guys heard anything about the NFL or baseball saying yeah we're gonna have virtual reality in Tampa Bay yours I haven't heard and I know that they haven't yet I think they wanna see a little bit more from the technology you also need the development of ups and cheaper rock camera technology that's able to do the 360 degree cameras I think that that's cameras are expensive and nearly twenty grant will help sixty but but keep in mind that's just for something that is you know capable of producing that video for an individual in order to be able to do. What you do sporting events that you talk about how much those cameras cost they actually used to films recording events. Just by themselves you're talking you know those numbers if not mortal accuse us. But I it'll be on free it'll be fascinating. I think you're probably right it's probably several years you know where they are using it is in baseball. They're using it for to traders will be using it for hitters Tucker to look. And it eight pitcher's delivery are so let's say you're going in and who's the best picture pitcher in the American League this year in the American League. Chris L its say he's out there and cat so. If you say you've got a series and you're going to be going up against him four times tomorrow night you're gonna be of the put the headset on. Stand at the plate. And look at his delivery. Battery that action alert on your hand eye coordination well against her love to see the release straight to see how pilots out of his hand adding there's a lot that goes into what. You CEO what's interesting is actually in the NFL what they're using this technology for is not so much so that a quarterback can see different looks but they're actually using it in Dallas this to see. When you put someone in this VR headset and show them a play that's unfolding. What are the things that that person's actually working so you can track I movements and things like that and it's it's pretty interesting what you're able to get out of it you gotta figure. You know that's where you talk about training for. Other professions for doctors for machinists and people like that in any say okay. You know here's what you need to be looking at first when you go into law in a heart surgery here the first things I want you to physically look at the Kennedy actually track the odd movement to see what's going on. The education applications for businesses are also. It did suspend the spell the end of the class. I hope not. But it just a lot of apple white hope not and I found I mean we're talking a couple which he wrote the note taking ability in you know what I don't want that to go away. No but I do think in terms of just trying to rein in some of the costs of agitation you know I think there's definitely some things that you can do there. From this perspective that I think can make that a lot I can finally go to Harvard. Is the bit there had been out. And Danica at a dinner and virtual virtually I'll virtually go to Harvard remember when he talked about higher education the cost for each student actually attend. Is different it cost a lot more. To teach engineering student and teacher of philosophy student so that's that's why college is actually there's different degrees to find a balance there oh when you talked about you know trying to reduce costs for engineering program this is something that you can apply there can have an impact people still go to class. But in terms of removing some of the cost associated with that degree or I think you can pull on. There are other means of attending class they just act gotcha I think it's reality yeah absolutely none lead this is a techno in my opinion this is a technology worth investing. There will be no Grand Prix of Boston as we found the city blown again. We're live with that. The start Marty's plainly Mickey did guns and I don't know what and I believe I rooted in the newspaper supposedly the city was making demands that were too steep wars the the race to compete here. Who'd probably or. You know you never know I don't know what races is keep in mind with sporting events we saw how the Olympics tried to push they wanted you know this and that and everything for the city to handle everything. Sometimes sporting events you know get a little bit cocky in a little bit too big for their britches thinking that everyone's gonna wanna show up and yeah sometimes they abuse that for. I just think in that particular weekend. It would have been a very popular that has all the collar Labor Day while the college kids are back Darren in college kids are leaving. During the next two weeks. Ripe for all intents and purposes. And so their back for labor big food you'd give it does have some competition because the the Deutsche Bank championship is that same weekend at college system. And of college kids were gonna shell out a hundred bucks for tickets to a Grand Prix not a union would aunt and he'd be of the goal and hang out in the neighborhoods even if you didn't go in it you know to the actual yeah if you want to get some but I think like from a corporate perspective on this corporate seats and everything they were trying to sell -- I mean you're going right up against the Deutsche Bank which is kind of a tough sell to say sit around and south is opposed being out on the golf course getting free Beers. This is gonna come with skis and set of tires and you know happy NHL comes from Canada and all your favorite Hough at the other big for car not a snowmobile. Anyway. The the ad market cap for apple is down 73 billion dollars. And they did have a a story this morning out of India. India said we are knocked Italy sells used light bulbs in India. Which I and lose the kind of surprised that that India push back that way had the Indian government said we will not let you sell. He used iphones in in the mind and maybe you don't really want him a lot of folks are made in India. And they want her if you know the that somebody is trying to sell Smartphones from like a buck if in India they they said that it's a good deal yeah. Well it's there there are saying that we're not gonna allow used phones to be sold here because we want spark innovation. India saying the other reason for it is because those used phones are closed end of life and typically discard it within six to twelve months and Indy does not anywhere put trash. Which is a legitimately give in the lake they have all kind of pressure on it's it's not like something they bring their trash. No generally goes into rivers who think it's it's not a good situation in a lot of cases they've done a lot of work the last twenty years to try to clean things up but it still mad. Have you ever looked at the trash burning facilities that turn trash into electricity Jeff yeah that is technology. That by vote we'll take off that there's going to be a lot of money need in that business it's been attempted over the years it's more expensive than running a dump. But the thing about the efficiencies worth it right unique thing about where we all take our trash like I have it I take my track to the town dump it would they do it. Felt landfill in and you don't realize is that's poisoning ground. Do you look at our ground water if poisons largely due to these trash it is but he even the incineration you do run into some issues in terms of toxicity it's released in the into our air and you know they the those companies are claiming that they can scrub that. The did the burned if you will. And and clean that up that's the that's the argument being made by the consideration companies yet so who'd pay I think it is coming in a future. Do you think they're really gonna find these paintings. No you don't know. I think these are long gone hidden away somewhere. Come back out like in hundred years type thing so they're private collection maybe yet I don't know necessarily a hundred vets say at least at least another thirty to forty new generation yeah I think I think the number of people left to die before there's a good come out because the FBI saying they've got this Fella in Connecticut Robert genteel. Who 79 years old now they've got a month tape. Saying that he could sell them both for about 500000 bucks each with what I love about this is. Just the fact that I didn't realize this but it's apparently others say some kind of quirk in non Gardner will instill that empty frames have remained at the museum. During this entire time so there's still hanging up even though the paintings all the guys dressed up as cops. This is again what 26 years ago. And walked in. You know took the pain on believe walked out. And there's the fact that they've not been caught. It tells you that there must be one heck of an. You know that's rich art collector we'd we'd you don't wanna have these and it's a what do I need to have. You gotta figure I mean someone probably does in their probably in some hidden chamber somewhere that you know only Enos or once you see they'll they die you die all right exactly it's like you're immediately double tap from behind and it's now game over for him. I don't think they could have done that today great because official recognition. Software out there yeah cameras everywhere out now you're probably right Tucker you're probably right. You know one of the things that I wanna do is talk about the consumer staples sector. It consent consists of many products on what you think of consumer staples stocks such as. Diapers razors growth trees and toothpaste. That are prevalent in our everyday lives. Because of the relatively consistent demand for these products stocks in this particular sector have tended to be less volatile. Then the overall market. And as consistent demand has caused less cyclical in the average company's cash flows. They actually had very good returns despite the lower volatility. Eight fidelity investment study. Never. Diet I'm never going on a diet again. I made that decision. How come. Well I was reading the study you know the Biggest Loser of the TV show yeah you're the ever cease on the never actually watched artery or watch it nine or election but I know how much weight to lose to hundreds of pounds. Loss study. Written in 2013. Showed that after returning home the contestants were highly likely to begin slowly gaining back the week. That they had worked so hard to lose. Out of fourteen contestants. Thirteen have regained the week. More contestants are heavier today than they worked for competition again oops looks at these so don't get a cart don't. It has to stop visit to stop who are just meant to be I people like me were just meant to be a little overweight it's okay. These people and I think you rate right now you know it is I've been exercising. I thought it was just that you've been growing at your hair so mix the rest your body looks small on compares to nine and exercising more I I I would rather exercise the guy. I just. My wife complains about the heat but it's like my last remaining flights are few of the highlights consumption of food ran a perfect. A perfect pretty much true you know I don't know. You know I had no vices now I smoke cigars no flaws. No no no no character defects not just a perfect but it never how's it feel being in the studio with both professionally. You must. Feel terrible about yourself down now to data gathered and I'm a Tucker I. And anyway. Yes it. Shocking they only the like it does its act showed very populous exposed so there's a great study in the New York Times that was published in the New York Times may be. What's that five or six years ago it's about a concept called decision fatigue. And what scientists have actually figured out is that as your glucose levels go down your will power does as well and so the very active dieting. Actually makes you more likely to not die in the future because. It's it's the same reason why you can go on a diet and you're good through most of the day now but you get to end of the day you've been doing it all day and that's when he most likely to say well I'm just on the council just have a couple cookies are all just happy you know examination dreamers and chips. The three and Alex you've depleted that glucose over the course of the day in your will power just completely sapped and so. Did the very active dieting means that you are less likely to lose weight room you know it says just I think the solution for me personally. The solutions to exercise more. Point from the six a through my husband when on a diet lost fifty pounds and his sense of humor. Thought it funny guy not any more don't die. Thank you six of threatening notes that federal law that are always more fun yeah because we're happy this or whatever who cares the I agree that. Tech companies and auto makers are asking regulators to speed up self driving car adoption when I saw the story I thought back to that company. At MIT member of the companies it spun off of that and nineteen called new economy the other working on a knowledge Singapore and then there you know why they're going to Singapore. Is that the modern city. That is technologically. Friendly. Where is in the United States. I think the big thing that's gonna hold back this the in the embracing of this technology. Can be our politicians. I think that's it they're so stupid they won't pass laws to. Comedy that's going to be one the other thing that is a major problem that they're still trying to figure out is that. Road signs and stoplights and so force they differ from city to city and from town to town and from state to state and a cousin that. A give you an example let's say that you have in one city you have all of your traffic lights that are hanging vertically and just go you know red green red yellow green. In the city next what you may have you know the ones that are too wide is able left turn and a right turn in this in that. In the autonomous vehicle can't. Hell difference necessarily and so just gets confused and shut down and says I don't wanna go anywhere you know it's kind of like a puppy saying no I'm not gonna go for a walk. So you've got to figure out some type of standard station as far as. You know general signs and signals and so forth but the problem is. States are really built to work across state lines like that that there's some real issues that you have to deal with there. I think you know that the political things as well as you just basic logistics like that making sure that all signs you know our easily readable. You know those those are going to be some real issues there. When you get is get your car. What percentage of the time do you spend by yourself in the car. They gave it EU if you spend a big one time he told me truck he spent fifteen hours a week in your car down. Of that fifteen hours what percentage of that time is just you in your car 9095. Tucker time now I'm probably. Because I do a long drive twice a week with my life so I'm probably more like EVE 85. But vast majority of our time we spend in our cars by ourselves. We're going to be talking in the next segment about how the daily commute is going to change due to technology in it's a positive change by the way. That's our next topic on the financial exchange. From the insure a match dot com studios. The election 2016 member who will have an impact only the economy I don't know right here it's a financial exchange on the financial exchange rates. Teamed up with you are at California Berkeley to look at. It to try to understand some of these new term ability choice I eat you spoke up lifted a car and try to understand there and armed and so. Yes every one is now are you planning the poor to ride service. That list line and through the war right of the services that connect. Two people up who don't know each other but who happen to be going in the direction that share the ride. If those people were looking expediting our counseling there's going to be an environmental and but what we need to understand and working out light tree using Ryder survey. Is. Is that it statement. That the people previously track. In some cases that bit and talk at that maybe people are substituting. Lip liner to report that instead of taking public. Instead of walking and biking and we need to look at the whole picture of what's happening to understand. And be back in the aggregate. Because it's relatively new Liverpool's only been out for what six months a year. It depends what the market there about eight. Eight market around the country Asia and the country with a cool ride services are available yup I think in and bought and then it it'll only get out from last year. You know New York too I know my son uses New York that day. You you can measure the traffic as they measured the traffic by the average speed of the vehicles. In New York City and the average speed. Slowed down because of all the uber cars. On the road now maybe with Liverpool. May be the speed will start to pick up again. Well right there all these different sort of competing theories out there that some people posit that. If it's so easy together ride on the man accusing Smartphone. But some people like it better. Maybe not owning your own car anymore but just using the car on demand and we of course know the greatest predictor of how much you drive it whether he. Back to be an upside. That the potential downside of the is that people are using these vehicles that it origin people car and says. At 800 or more people using the Bucs are using it about the art. How does the northeast compare in terms of congestion pay because we live here we just think every worse like this but. It are we worse than most of the rest of the country in terms of congestion. You know it's right up there the new York and the ball in that order is ranked in the top and you know for the mother and just electric and in the country. Now it has to be a lot of financial benefits to the consumer through carpooling. The most people don't realize I think how expensive transportation and transportation is back in highest household expense. And it in this country taking an average at age interest about harder and that's just to get around me do it every. Average cost car at about 9000 dollars. And of course. And a number that now is actually my eyes pat. Is that that car that we paid so much money to ensure. Patent that you remain an iron. Hit and he is parked for about 95%. Of the life he what we drive our car at about on average about one hour every debt. And yet we we older cars in bowl and so that the prominent premise of the sort of shared their ability. Based is that it might be both more convenient and open up opportunities for people to save album the dollars a year under community. If we can look at pat sure ability. How much longer does it take commander for this technology to be embraced how long is it before. It becomes commonplace as opposed to the exception to the rule. Well 11. Statistic I can give you a and of course San Francisco was. Where the company. Starting at over Atlanta. It'd a couple of years ago yeah. And there are now reporting that over half of the Hoover and Lidstrom Brian. In San Francisco. Are in the pool to ride for. The war. And left lines that one is a pretty strong financial incentive production state money it seemed as though people worked up than the. No that's always moves the needle Amanda thank you very much for your time we appreciate it. Amanda eakins. Natural resources defense council talked to us about her daily commute I see this that's amazing in San Francisco they've had to her pool a lot longer half the right track. Yep it's it's pretty significant there I don't use the the pool feature when I'm not using it around Boston now and just take one. Usually gets I'm traveling you know with other people anyways a lot of times I'm not usually maneuvering by myself. My son uses it in New York so it saves him a fortune is that. He lives uptown and his girlfriend lives downtown right so it takes him an extra five minutes to get their because of Liverpool but he saved half the money. Be it in you know what it does it becomes. Starting startlingly. Close to the cost of public transportation. You know what the you know they really should try Q while work out some type of collaboration with tender you can meet someone tenders and who were together the way you don't hang down I think that's where it's.
