This is the financial exchange we've Barry Armstrong and chuck saga from the Wall Street. Sting and tough breaking business news and learn how to manage your money to help you towards a more secure. And now. Broadcasting live from the insurer mention don't come studios it's the financial exchange with the New York. Hosts Valerie Armstrong and chuck Soledad. The first Friday. Upon. It's always my favorite day. Tiger but there are here and pop right. We're celebrating that they beat in terms of the expectation for jobs chuck widget maker and number 242000. You know I think that beyond the top line number was up pretty strong obviously. I dug a little bit deeper into the report and it was it was a mixed bag I mean there were some pieces. In their fight took a look at the op participation rate it's a nice little bump up there that is continued to rise over the last five months labor force participation. Now 62 point 9% about half a percent above where it was back in September. Surprisingly to me you actually saw. Wages ticked down a little bit about point oh point 1% and that's something that was disappointing to me. I agree awaits number was a disappointment because we're looking to get wages growing it for an 5% and I think the Euro per year number. Where run and about 2.2 right now and that is disappointing 2.2 out grand choosy disappointing number but here's what I speculate has occurred I don't even have to speculate I can tell you as a matter fact what is occurring. Jobs are leaving the energy sector and the mining sector coal we you know coal mining is down. You know oil mining is down you know natural gas is down I think of the compensation in those sectors that chuck in a truck drivers are vacant 200000 bucks at North Dakota. Guys were wild chatters were Macon 15200000. Dollars engineers were make it happen boxed those jobs are being eliminated. And there's a lot of those jobs that have been eliminated and they're being replaced evidently was lower paying service sector jobs that's my observation would you agree yeah I. I would say that's that's probably. What we are seeing you you look at where a lot of the job growth is happening a lot of it is in retail a lot of it is in. Leisure and hospitality which are not necessarily the highest paying areas. And so I do think that's probably what you're seeing when you look at the breakdown of where the job growth actually is it's not necessarily coming. In the places that you'd like to see at the typically have higher wages. Now the unemployment rate stands at four point 9% are so we have bats that we can push that out. Here's the other thing to look at they'll be used six and you been of bella that's watched this number closely. It went from nine point 9%. Down 109 point 7%. So if you look at a true level of unemployment. And you know you're here at the cocktail party tonight at the bar all unemployment came in at four point nine note did nick came in at nine point 7% because. That's the number of people that are actually looking for a better job in went from nine point nine downed by nine point seven the spread. They're chuck and this is a bad part report the spread is still much wider and will we you'd like to see you don't wanna see four point nine to nine point seven. Traditionally that spread might be. Four point nine and then you know the use six might be running seven and a half 8% so this there's still. It's evidence of softness with in the job market based on the U six number. Yeah and that's probably another reason why you're still not seeing the consistent wage growth that we want to see it because there's an awful lot of folks that are working part time that want to be working full time that. Has an extra slack it's built in there now that you six the spread there from what's that the use three as the report that we typically you get when we refer to unemployment. So the spread between that use three new six if you go back to Europe go to February of 2015. The unemployment rate the headline number was five and a half percent. And the use six was eleven so was a five and a half percent spread. Now down to four point 8% so it's moving in the right direction it still isn't where you want it to be I unity said you want that to be somewhere around 3% so we're still above that number and that's part of the reason why you're not seeing the wage growth because there are still. You know you run the math here and you say okay. When it's all said and done you still have five or six million people out there. Rather I'm sorry you still about eight or nine million people out there that are working part time that would like to be full time. And and they'll take wages they'll take the same wages just pick ups or more hours. Factory jobs down 161000 nice in noted that factory jobs down 161000 construction jobs those are good job struck those are acting jobs construction jobs up 191000. Revisions this is important. The revisions came in they revised up 30000 January number which we were disappointed I think January came in at 155 yup but. But now today the revised that up 2176. And if you go back and you look at the twelve month average were averaging 220000. Jobs created on a monthly basis. I'd like to see it stronger IE you know the naysayers of saying it's not strong enough and I would agree with that. But it's still not a bad number 220000. Jobs created. Mining and oil we talked about that those are gone lower quality jobs taking the place is not a fact somebody's are 60 threes RD. Chimed in what Pete minimal wage jobs I wouldn't say. I wouldn't say their minimum wage jobs that there they're not as high paying jobs as lead that we've had in in the sectors. You know one thing I don't know if you're watching this or not but I was observing. The dots in terms of the likelihood of being fed rate hike yup. By the end of the year and as soon as that report came out chuck I can mean in seconds that were the dots moved all the way up to about 95%. Likelihood. A B rate hike. By year end once everybody started to interpret the data and this is to your point once the interpretation of the data was complete the dot chart moved back. To 65% so right now if you looked at your trot your guide your likelihood. It's about a 65%. Likelihood of an interest rate hike before 1231 at sixteen. Yeah I think that's that's probably right about what I would say I I think there you're still gonna see one I would place my personal. Personal projection a little bit higher than that I think you're gonna see one more just I think the Fed wants to more than anything else they want to show that they can continue. A pass here if even if it is a slow pass but yet as you said you know you dig through a lot of this. And if I degrade this unemployment report found that you're saying OK you know what where why put this. Probably put it right the B minus range it is you know it's it's decent I wouldn't call it good work but it's you're still moving in the right direction just much more slowly. Then you'd like to be in terms of wages and things along those lines so I probably greater rate and a B minus range it is slow improvement but improvement on the lights. While still taken my victory lap because I I yeah bag I just water remind everybody. Yesterday at the conclusion of the program shocks at the number would be less than 180. I said it would be at least 50000 more than 18242000. Jobs created. I only had one listener they're congratulating Kevin MacKey thank you for for remembering but today everybody seems to have forgotten my prediction of the beat. It all zone my medal day. All month. I got to hold the site over your head until we do the April I love Fridays I love the Friday jobs report I mean that it's it's likely get Christmas. Every month because there's so much data in there you know the liking you I've been in and finish yet day in and take me till tonight to finish reading the apple report. But I mean there's just so much information. On that report it's like you get Christmas once a month fantastic hey did you see. Well we'll hold that story I wanted to talk about Costco because they're raising wages let's talk about Liberty Mutual a big employer. In New England. And they had a really tough quarter liberty mutual's profits plummeted more than 70%. In year 2015. Two big problems at Liberty Mutual tapping chuck. One they're losing their shirt in Venezuela right there actually closing up their Venezuelan operations at that. Yeah I I don't really blame them for that. Event as big as well at this point is pretty much selling anything that isn't tied down to that to the country there. You know they're they're literally selling off you know rocks if they can't just try to make debt payments. Now so Venezuela they they lost their shirt their but you know one thing we talked about. How tough a low interest rate environment is on a bank I don't know that we've ever talked about how tough low interest rates are on insurance company. You know insurance companies live on the float. You know they peaked trucks ought to pays. His insurance company. A thousand dollars and they hope like heck the you don't have an accident and then Nate in best that thousand dollars knowing that they're gonna have to pay out claims. When you had 0% interest rates. I it just occurred to me this whole sector is badly damaged by the interest for our as a can't buy bonds that pay any yield. Well and you think about this in the effect it has on the individual. If if the insurance company can't. Earn as much as they expect in order to make up that difference what has to happen. Premiums have to go off of that you know that's factoring in all of this is why also. Low rates and what that means. For you as someone who goes out and buys insurance whether it's homeowner's insurance car insurance health insurance any of that. Low rates mean that all of those premiums have to go up because the company has either earn money from you. Or from its investments if they can't get it from their investments they have to get it from you. So keep that in mind as you're observing what goes on with the Federal Reserve and interest rates. If interest rates go up you'll make more money on your money market account in your bank accounts and on your CD's if interest rates go up hypothetically. You should be paying less money for your insurance products like car insurance and homeowners insurance because. The insurance company even life insurance would be affected because the insurance companies get the float right now there is no float. And that's you know that's that's a point that goes forgotten quite often. Are not coming up we will be joined by our good friend Aaron L were from the Wall Street Journal we're going to be talking more about Aubrey McClendon. You know we we alluded to this yesterday but Aron has done some research trucked in to the death. Financial news business news and what it means you're old right here on the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck are on the financial. Exchange radio network. We are back and we're going by. They had ever you know. Off it looked splendid wanna take this one chuck. Yeah we're now joined by air and ill worth from the Wall Street Journal Aaron I appreciate you joining us today. There and talk to us are you an article today on the death of Aubrey McClendon. Talk a little bit about what you've found as you've started to research into this. How well mr. Clinton and wines. Indicated earlier we are in high. And I do you later died in car crash. And show. You are actually there. Early the investigation into extra income. Achieved some question and Cobb you know. Howard will move forward whether it will go forward. Justice Department yesterday and cheated to get mr. Clinton. Way. Like there is dill. And named co conspirator Erica. That they could be. And what when we talk about the yacht the next steps are to this point. McClendon was the only one who had been indicted the Victor company. Chesapeake had not been formally indicted and no one else from the company had been either is that correct. Right track the peak is companies Aetna and game Coach Brown did top. 99. And you are at actually. EO eight. 2013. And Chesapeake. Had been working eat eat your marriage except seek should be working it just. Are caught in the act they are. Eating many anti under federal program for cooperating it's. Is there any L word I know that this is what when you read through the indictment and what they were alleging. It says that Chesapeake was conspiring with other companies to keep bid prices low and and they would essentially sell a portion of those leases backed other companies we don't necessarily know who the other companies that were potentially involved in this are yet do week. That's right. Coke and beer. More current year. But no one and it's a plea in saint. Have we gotten any any reports from. The police around the scene of the around the scene of McClendon death as to the exact circumstances or any details yet. They are still working aren't that bad acts. Think the outcome. A week or Q what we know right now to experiment over or is there. In that he is striking. Car. Meant higher at being an actor he. And it in terms of the rest of the oil and gas industry obviously. You know with with this standing out there it seems like there'd be a lot of uncertainty among other executives as to where exactly does go oops. The act. And the industry as big worry it may. Several. Several people in the or gas and treatment cop out what it was all there watching me back with a leading the broader arc arc. Because it. People knew that that. That he was the subject. It. Where there are. For some time so that let her quite an indictment came down it got everybody. Wondering you know what I mean who else who currently. Boiled it. Now when we take a look at Chesapeake here in the stock in the last day and a half now. Has rallied up you know about 40% so it seems to me that investors. Are treating this is that this is a burden off the company is that a fair way to look at that. Up you know I don't know I mean look at the price of oil which is all. Up. Or or you know I. I would I would act is to share. What is so what's next year in terms of this investigation is there any timeline that we should be looking for over the next weeks or months. Well and her on the McLaren test like that it you don't want you leak. Period in that week investigators can bear. Into her do it Justice Department. And aren't banker with anyone get I have to leave it on. But there is the Coke you're out there that it will be important. Third go to Aaron I appreciate you joining us today and thank you very much for your time. Absolutely that was airedale worth from the Wall Street Journal she does have an article. Up there on the Wall Street Journal today it was published this morning. Chuck. I'm into I'd disagree with Aaron had a call bull crap. On the that death and the stock price. You know of the stock prices up 40% in one day oil prices were up 40% yesterday no oil prices are up 18% off the floor. I think aid and we talked about this yesterday and it's a terror hoping to discuss and and I don't want to appeal I don't want it to sound insensitive. But I gotta tell yeah. But Clinton's dying is seeding Chesapeake. Because BP we're gonna go after Chesapeake in a much more arduous faction had he not committed suicide I I think you're gonna learn. He committed suicide and chess peek at saved lives death. Well here's. I can understand that at some level but the thing you also have to look at is other companies in that space because wall. Ball you're right the oil is up 18%. Given by the Chesapeake is incredibly leveraged and so that does have an outsize effect effect here. And just to give you a point of comparison Marathon Oil which is another big. Exploration and production company. Is up about 35%. Or rather 32% over the last couple days as well. And so you know they're not involved in this in any way shape or form and they're rallying pretty significantly not to the extent that Chesapeake is but I would think that part of that. Is just because Chesapeake you know you talk about the leverage they have in the amount of debt on the books I think that's playing and as well. Keep you heard anything about IBM layoffs I got a text message from 603 saying. Net they're doing layoffs and then I researched it on the great I can't find any credible source. Get a lot of postings and things like that. About layoffs and IBM. Do me a favor folks if you know anything about IBM laying off a new they have layoffs every. Quarter every year in the first quarter IBM kinda get rid of beer they're around they're weakest employees. But the have you heard anything out there in the press about IBM layoffs and a big way. God the the pieces that I've seen of pretty much just been standard layoffs that they typically have at the beginning of the year. And Ryan from San which had the right answer there he takes home eight teacher. As a result he had the right answer and got it first also which is the most important part. Bear we saw this a study done by MGM came out today. That said that if the casino that is proposed to be built in Hartford is actually moved to Fairfield County it would generate more revenue and jobs. Well I believe that is true ID you blew it the casino at a fair field is that you're gonna get the New York money. The thing that I don't like is that the study was done by M yeah right horse in the race it's a it's a little self serving doesn't it seem like get. It in a year. And I but just think about it logically track you know Bridgeport. Actually Bridgeport is not part of south I would like to see it right on the border like Greenwich Connecticut now you'll never get one in Greenwich. Greenwich residents would never allow port at Stamford. Woody can be a better location in Bridgeport because urged ports actually pretty far up. I got injured yeah or yeah late eagle and scampered struggled a lot of jobs leaving stamper I don't know if they have the land port and location. Bridgeport has a lot doubled manufacturing locations. That and and you could build a nice marina and you know he could make and export walks and that's that the thought behind Bridgeport revitalizing Bridgeport which I like. I just. Eat in a perfect world chuck you want is closer to the New York money and that closer down 95 you get towards. In a Port Chester right New York. That's where the money is in the and you get people coming up from the Bronx just people from the Bronx and queens would. Would drive anyway it just the next twenty minutes on 995. But. Mohegan Sun doing the air MGM doing the study I think you have to look at that with the jaded guy. Yeah I I do Q and an even looked at the parameters of the study they said okay if you look at a 500 million dollar casino in Hartford. And a billion dollar one in Bridgeport well after spending more to build something bigger of course it's gonna create more jobs I mean it you know it kind of stood out to me that way but. You know you figure if you work to put a casino down Ian. Whether it's you know I had Bridgeport Stamford whatever it may be. If you. Put that casino there you got to imagine that that's another blow to Atlantic City because you talk about where most people you know where New Yorkers go. For casinos Atlantic city's huge draw there but if you have something that's closer. That is you know potentially easier to get to. You open up an entirely new while the new market there and it really hurts Atlantic City if that if that would happen. Well it hurts Mohegan Sun and foxwoods and it draws from Long Island as well because there's a ferry that comes over from all violence yup. And and then you'd just have boaters to have people that it could you would say while just take my. From the North Shore of Long Island or take my yacht from the Bronx and Uggla to Bridgeport for the weekend. It's it's a good location don't get me wrong I actually. The more you think about it it's it's a compelling location has Bridgeport is also economically depressed it's it's rural factory town. That has died a very slow and painful death. You've got a nice hockey arena there in the you know they're trying to revitalize it. But in this could be a good move aimed at opening a casino in Bridgeport could be one of the smartest things that Connecticut could do in it would create jobs and those are pretty good jobs unity you'd you'd construction jobs are good. And a full time jobs in a casino or pretty acting yeah yeah absolutely. Rhode Island announcing or praise team gate to either going to be flights between. Rhode Island TF green. And the eighties or now the Azores. Our islands they're Portuguese islands that are 900 miles off the coast of Portugal. And I didn't know this but there is about a 100000 people in New England for two up for dominantly in Rhode Island. And in Fall River New Bedford, Massachusetts. That RE's orient in an inch ancestry and I guess this is a pretty popular destination now the only problem is sought Todd is the airline. And I was talking to a friend of mine Cindy. From. She's on FaceBook and she flies sock tied to go back to Portugal and she had. Horrible spears I understand it's not that a highly most highly rated airline in another good. That's what I hear that it idea and I hear from some pretty good sources that the they leave a lot to be desired. You know what talk to about advance the state planning it has many benefits including avoiding probate passing your assets along to your blood line protection from the nursing home. And possibly. Like favored eliminating estate taxes. Todd let's keep his law partner with the law firm Cushing and Dolan educates our listeners by telling them how to protect their assets from the high cost of nursing homes. A state planning has many benefits including helping you to not impoverish your spouse if you go to nursing home. Cushing and dole has put together a brand new guide. It's called the top ten reasons to do the state planning to call for your copy now the poll numbers 8668485699. Cushing and Dolan can help you protect your assets 8668485699. That number again is. 8668485699. I guess the because of the el Nino. Affect this year chuck we had a mild winter. In New England relatively speaking and the ocean. Is warmer Bennett has been the last couple years they're suggesting there's a soccer the scientists. That suggesting that the lobster catch is gonna come about three weeks early this summer. Yet you might be able to get those lobster rolls a little bit earlier. Down by the beats in the ocean and what we're seeing here the summer lobster season it typically picks up in early July which is usually right when not tourism becomes pretty big. In a lot of places in new wing and right around that July 4 holiday after the kids are out of school. In Ollie June. And what scientists are saying here though is that the coastal waters warmer due to the warmer winter that we've had and the strong el Nino. That the the prime fishing season may actually be a few weeks prior to this they may not line up. Quite the way. Debt lobster and would prefer because the problem is look if you have an earlier season. It disrupts the supply chain a little bit it moves things around a little bit so you don't necessarily have the precious catch out there. And die it's it's something that the a lot of lobster and are probably little concerned about heading into the spring and summer now. No secret about lobster what he got. When you go in July in you go to most restaurants and you buy lobster sandwich a lobster roll like you like to have dealt. You know that's frozen. Well depends where you go I mean I I try to go to places I have my my thing was got a place down my grandfather's place up in Maine and the places we go you see the guys swimming around in the tank right before you grab mountain. You pretty much pick your lobster that way. That's if you're getting steamed lobster but if you are order a lobster rolls sandwich. Ask be it that's frozen or it's fresh lobster 8 PM cheered again does its pros. They fight in the winter it depends I think when you close the coast you may get a little bit more the fresh stuff coming out I would say I'll be forty. Frozen yet that Tucker deuce let's do a text let's ask our listeners for some help. Because some of our listeners may know the restaurant business pretty well. What do you think folks if you buy a lobster roll is it fresh or frozen. And that's all just an honest question are nothing's a bad thing I'm just saying my inside information tells me what did you say talk you'd think at six I think it's it from what I hear I know people on their currency I would say 6040 frozen and that's not a bad thing. I just it's just such a pain to prep everything every single thing. I think if you're close to way I'll lobster community which is kind of a weird word this the phrase does say but if you're close to lay out community that does a lot of flops during. I think it say it's definitely a little bit fresher just because you have easy access there does need to be shipped or anything. Well I tell you what I'll bet you sum up our techsters logo are tech's number 68680. Helped us out you know the answer to that question. The lobster we in the summer. On a lobster roll is a fresh or frozen 68680. Costco Wholesale corporation said it would raise its minimum wage. For store workers for the first time in nine years. Bill latest US retailer to respond to a tightening labor market. And chuck it was because of reports like this that I thought we are gonna get beat on the unemployment report this morning. You I think I was surprised by it shows a tightening labor market. But we didn't get the wage growth so I think it's gotta be this rotation out of the highly paid sectors into the lower paid sectors. I think that probably matches up bar with what you're seeing here just because as you said look you've got jobs. In North Dakota in Texas and Pennsylvania. That have been lost in the energy sector that were paying people. 89 B a 10020000. Dollars a year and your placing down. With jobs that are paying 253545000. Dollars a year so I think that's something. That you're definitely seeing now. And unfortunately. It has caused you know it is inconsistent wage growth but Costco here. Bumping on their personal or their corporate minimum wage to thirteen dollars an hour this month it's a dollar fifty above. Where was previously so it's about a 12% raise for workers that were at the low end of the spectrum there. And I was intrigued to see they had. 205000. Employees. 88000. Or part time in the remainder of that site what a 120000. Are full time workers at Costco and I think it utterly your experience has been but. The employees seemed to be a higher caliber at a Costco that name might be perhaps at a Wal-Mart. And it's all related to wages rated you're good enough to get a job at Costco you're gonna go to Costco is supposed to stay at Wal-Mart that you might start off at Wal-Mart what you figure out how the games played and you understand how to do your job. You're gonna go to Costco as fast as he can't. Yeah I mean it's it's you you're starting to see at this low end of the spectrum you are seeing a lot more competition in order to try to get those workers I drove past. Couple that from wal marts in the last couple days and on all home. Eight you know there are signs right up front hey were hiring right now just as it seems to me that they can't get the amount of help they want in there at this point. Rate. Judge did we had to David guest on the next segment their Tucker. Not okay then you don't do is we're getting a lot of text messages on the those lobster story so what do we cover some of those truck. Hi everybody very are strong here from the financial exchange I'm joined today by. Jake to Lee who's a senior vice president at leader bank you were talking about something called. Zero rent this is a program that allows landlords whether you have. 1010 it's a 110 tenants are 210. Tenants it allows you to collect your rents electronically. As opposed to waiting for those paper versions to come in the mail to wonderful new program available exclusively. From leader bank and Jay's gonna tell us exactly how this program works. It buried so it meter rate we actually think a lot of real estate developers and property owners in the Boston area. The number of larger clients. Came into the banking and we even coming with huge wad of checks and we thought about you know why why he's in this state needs are still bringing so many checks that they ain't it it's a simple thing you know and in so you have property in Cambridge. Three unit building. And each community's three bedrooms. You may have nine checked him to crack just one Robert aren't so budgets college student exactly so if you have three properties that's point seven checked starts it starts out pretty quickly. So it's you read what we've done is we've we've allowed a landlord to invite their tenth. The tenant signed up we deduct each share range from the tenants and then one east each payment. That landlord for each unit. So it makes very clean and simple. It's very clearly described as to what the rate has been paid for which property Corus which unit number everyone gets reminders and it's automatic. And it's. How do you learn more he called on 8776917. B 900 that's leader bank told free. 8776917900. Ask how leader bank can help you collect your rents electronically it's terrific. 8776917900. We have asked do you choose sending you text regarding. The question we had a belt off the rules and whether or not they were frozen or fresh. I was of the opinion that there are quite a few places where you can get fresh ones Barry was of the opinion that there they are mostly frozen Tucker said it was about a 6040 split. From our text from what I can tell bury it appears to be in the middle there's both. It's the cheaper ones generally appear to be frozen the more expensive to appear to be fresh. Yeah any hit. The added difference excellent seven says my nephew owns three lobster rests restaurants it's all pros. And eat the here's the problem. The fresh side track it's just sold labor intensive. Two to get that lobster meat out and converted into salad. I think that's why they buy frozen and most of them are contracting to buy it in you know during the winter you know they'll buy a lot of the if you're running a big restaurant you have to know and you buy it and it's sitting in the freezer you pay storage fee in and you say OK I want some deliberate for Memorial Day. I want this many pounds delivered for July 4 week. And EU just pull it out of your storage facilities even though you bought it back in January. I don't doubt that at most restaurants that probably is frozen but I I've my argument was look on on the coast. You see an awful lot that are you know you're right in a town that has a big lobster. Presence in there in terms of I am saying that terribly probably but. If if you enter town that has a lot of lobster men. You're gonna see more places serving fresh and not a thing. Yeah yeah if you'd hope so. You probably ask and that's that's who I IC like when when I go to the place you see him in the tank and you see you know you're able to go out and pick your lobster if you want it now obviously. You know they have to do the work there in order to make the rules they're not buying from a big national distributor a lot of them are small businesses that are doing on and on their own. Chuck yours so you deal. Does it in what are what are you talking to him he's ever worked in the food service industry and tell you know I I don't ice I go to these places I see them take the lobster out and put it in the pot and then put it on my plate. There is no back. That different you're talking about fresh lobster on tight battle lobster roll sow panic so you think it's cheaper for a place that's right there that already has them and does this repeatedly as the main portion of their business to do this. I disagree O for I know for back not have any restaurant owner clients. But what kind of requests. I don't know I don't know I don't have any that are lobster police owners' right on the coast like I'm saying. The ridiculous argument you have no basis for that's. I don't I don't want a pile launch but I think voters are right on the fourth I. You've got big Bear's right obvious as the prep for the salad it's just way too time consuming to throw on signs that talked our role and incentive out system in general for 90% of restaurants 99 even I agree with you but for places that have big tanks with lobsters there and its -- prepare a lot that's what I'm saying aka. For the place and it. At Dartmouth. I fooled like you legacy if your dad make it big donation department luckily I won't have a legacy the way I'm going so. Our rate. They let's talk about companies freezing their corporate pension plans. The stats are startling day since the financial crisis the percentage of fortune 500 companies that have frozen their corporate pensions. Nearly doubled to 39% to 2015. From 21%. In 29. And chuck. We're talking about here's in the old days when you retired from a company like GE your IBM or Raytheon. Unit. Have a party and and they would give you pension. But the rest your life. Companies don't like doing that anymore. No update they don't and it's you know it's it's been a big drag on corporate profits and that's why you've seen a lot of companies. Going away from the corporate pension plan and moving more towards the defined contribution for a one k.s 450 seven's fourth fourth freebies as opposed to the pensions just because. Those expenses obviously. You know it's difficult to administered very costly and so in a pretty much what they've done is they've trip for the rest over to the employee instead of on the employer. It's it's been the big thing by the way just circling back one of our techsters Ney who owns a restaurant says he has some tanks and does use some fresh occasionally. Believe that it's about ninety tense play. If you're not getting give us enough unity you know it is chuck we get broken your EU had this vision. Some guy in the back. Boiling your lobster. And then turning it into a salad adding a little salary and some garlic and some mayonnaise and inane toasting the role you don't really understand other ready that's abroad you worked at a grocery store he never worked in a restaurant. Very I I go to these restaurants I succeed even lobsters in the tank. They're there. Ugly there'd still dark color because they have big cup yet they don't have that nice red power I see them put him in the pot I see how what works. Granted they're going to do you know Jimmy's truck stop on you know 495 refugee visas go to a regular restaurant. It is to you that doesn't do a lot during as a main source of its you know. Produce and and in an income. Then of course it's it's frozen because they're not gonna do that right there but if it's a place that has all that built right in court Agassi more presto there. Tucker is your. Add available after the show. I can check wise and physically I think you'd need to have your father or your uncle talked to chuck. All my uncle OK gotcha yeah among others you know it's just explained how you know the laws of land work in the. Bear I'm I'm going to get a lobster guy for Monday. I'm dork I'm gonna get a lobster guy for Monday I'll make some calls I'll talk to I think you call called Andy no I and I'm getting I'm gonna call the place that I go in Maine and I'm gonna have a Mon one way or another good laughter. This is the financial exchange with Barry Armstrong and chuck saga from the Wall Street. Stand tough breaking business news and learn how to manage your money to help you towards a more secure. And now. Drug testing my eyes from the insurer mention god gun studios it's the financial exchange with your. Hosts Henry Armstrong and chuck stuff. It is Friday here at the financial exchange and we have seen markets continue to rally this week. With the S&P 500. Now breaching the 2000 point mark. For the first time since back in early January the last time we were at this level. The lost and we posted this level was back on January 5 who has taken us two months but we are finally back over the 2000 level. After seeing dips in those January and February tux on and Barry Armstrong here very it's it's it's been. A roller coaster for the first two months. You know reminds me of the exercise that we went through. In January and Trevor where we were talking people off the ledge that today and industry. Term that we use are not proud of that but what it means it is. You know a lot of people were ready to jump off the legend. Industry like they did back in the 1930s. Why are stocks are selling off so badly and chuck we would have people texting into the show we would have listeners calling into the office we have clients calling into the office at all I got the world's going to nabbed. Well how quickly things have changed in a very short period of time end. You know the reason we work terribly bearish back in January February it was. You know the earnings were you know they were not. Bad you know when you looked at the earnings season in the rear view mirror it wasn't terrible and there was a bearish argument that you didn't have a banking crisis. When you looked at the fundamentals. You said to yourself mid you know it's it's okay great AM in turn is the earnings season. And then the final. Think the final straw for me I remember talking to nuke a client and and a really good friend. And of mine for many many years. And you know we're haven't talked about whether he should sell all of his stocks and just you know go to cash. And I said to listed Ernie you can do that and they said you know but here's the problem. How much are we gonna earned on your cash and if you sell your stocks in you you're gonna lose fair bit of money from where they were worth what they were worth last December. And that was kind of the thing that turned chuck you know there's still to this day. The Buell Tina argument there is no alternative. Yeah and and what you're seeing here is this is a market that has rallied. Pretty consistently over the last month now we hit the lows. We went down to I believe weighs 1813. On February 11 and then over the lack next three weeks since then. We've bounced backed up 10% pretty much coming in for the year now S&P is still down about 2% at the moments are still down. Over the course of the year in the broad market if you take a look at the Dow the Dow is still down about 2.3 percent. On the air and if he's way over take a look at the NASDAQ which is a little bit heavier in tact in a little higher volatility. NASDAQ is still down about five point 6% for the year so still down across the major indices but you've seen huge bounce backs. In all three of those major indices. What's going on procedural somebody just text it and it was up 15% yesterday in 45% today you know about that the only thing I can guess it's probably based on now oil prices. At this point I don't know they reported earnings I think that was back last week when they reported are now so I haven't seen anything. Come out news wise on the this is another company that was I think priced pretty close to bankruptcy if you go back and look at it in February trading at about a dollar 75 share. Now at 388. Worth about two billion dollars in terms of its market cap at this point. But to put this in perspective this is a company that if you go back to 2013 was trading about 45 dollars per share. And so it still has lost about 90% of its value since then and I think it's just because offshore drilling right now is just not. Viable from an economic perspective and a lot of cases. Rate it. Have you it and I'll ask our audience because you guys are probably closer to the story that we are. Shop and stop or Stop & Shop and stuff right that's the refresh our Stop & Shop stop and just stop and you stop then you shop. On they authorized a strike on Sunday had they gone on strike if they actually come out of the stores is right there's not. Well I'm not sure because of one of the techsters in that they have so would you let us know widget 68680. Is or text number. Has there been a change in the Stop & Shop worker situation is that 35000 workers. Chuck that we're gonna walk out it lock out the stores by his close up. Yet on I'm check around on Twitter just is that's where you tend to get a lot of the big breaking news right now. I don't see anything there the most relevant story I see about Stop & Shop is that someone got proposed to. Propose doing to Stop & Shop this morning but other than that I don't see anything. About strikes that are going on. At the moment I'm gonna check one more thing just to see if anything else is going on but. In general I know they approved the strike if they wanted to. But I have not seen any being I don't see anything on Twitter from the union or anyone saying that they are. That they are physically striking at the moment. 68680s. Or text number if they do go on strike truck that's gonna throw a monkey wrench. In to the unemployment report next month. Yeah I mean it it certainly well you'll see that distort the numbers especially on a regional basis. And we're getting some other people texting announcing that they are not on strike yet. In fact so I guess it's that vote that the strike has been authorized if needed but they are not. Striking at this point and actually seeing it looks like they are trying to get mediators in there in order to resolve this before it does go to strike. Yeah me federal mediators try to bring an asset yeah and they they typically do pretty good job with this. Now the I think what I'll I'll tell you right now those workers are gonna get paid. Need air they're gonna get paid to be used the stop and shops enemy choice but to pay the beat you they walk out they they checked out of notable loss. That is incurred to sort of back to that market basket story when they went on strike they shut the company down that a company could do thing. Once the workers stuck showed up same thing will happen year. If if it Stop & Shop workers to pick and frankly. They probably deserve to get paid it out they don't make a lot of money. You know what go apply for a job at Costco movement may have make more money. I GE says the appliance sales to hair. Passes that Justice Department antitrust review so that's that's another company and an and I predict many more jobs that are going to be our short your truck. Yeah this is day business that GE has been trying to sell for quite awhile now if you remember back to the fall. They had the attempted sale of this side division to Sweden's electoral blocs are shut down by the Justice Department actually. And so GE took a nice 175 million dollar fee from on the cancellation of that deal. And they this deal does appear to be moving forward now with hair at this point. And I think you know from GE's perspective. Really suggest that they are trying to make this big shift from you did the classic GE that you and I typically think of of your appliances and things like that. And moving much more and high tech which is the sense that we get is where they want to be going in the next five to ten year. It's. Let's do a quick trivia question here perhaps one of the most famous album covers of all time. The cover of London calling minutes mimics an album cover. Of what other famous artist were doing trivia today based on the one of the twenty greatest rock bands of all time this is the band clash of course. Perhaps one of the most famous album covers of all time. Cover of London calling mimics an album cover by what other famous artists are text number is 68680. First listener with the correct answer to that question will win a prize. Tough questions today I did it trip it was Erica and a bad mood this morning. Yeah you don't like the class home. I love the classic is that it I'd look at these questions only I landlord is going to be answered. Our listeners always do we have the smartest listeners ship. In new England and they always come through we have yet to give a question I think that we didn't get an answer for. Had. Oh here's why consumers are increasingly turning to us streaming media devices to view content out there a way I do it it's cheaper and I like it better. GAAP and I'd I think there's a lot of people that tend to agree with you what we're seeing. Is that this this shift is accelerating here. With people moving out both to connected TVs as well as standalone devices such as an apple TV or roku. And it really is an accelerating trend right now the projection over the next ten years. Is expected to rather over the next five years is expected to be at 10% annual rate of increase. In sales of those devices from 240 million up to 382. Million in 20/20 one. And it's you know this is this is the big trend that we're seeing now and I'll I'll tell you from my perspective. I've talked about core cutting for quite awhile I think this fall. Finally gonna get it done. And how dumb I'm gonna be joining in my will be cutting the court I look at how often I watched ESPN right now. Don't really need it will I miss some of the programming on there are probably well. But it's I don't wanna pay the cost anymore it's for the amount of time I spend watching it not worth the Toomey. And I will be kissing the traditional television experience Dubai and not welcome back. How much the same month I'll probably be saving when it's all said and done about seventy to eighty dollars a month. While natural money got that money buy a book for anybody throw money are let's take a quick break. We're gonna take a quick break now where go to on the other side be talking about Tesla is new 35000 dollar car the model three. We have seen oil prices stabilize in recent days on reports of some potential. Heels coming out of the Middle East. Oil now trading. Where are we today a little bit above 35 dollars a barrel actually. On the west Texas intermediate. Gauge here that number by the way is the highest that we have seen. Since back in late December so oil reaching. Place that we haven't seen in about two months now. And showing a little bit more stability. But still some volatility more volatility than you'd like to see on a day to day basis. But there's certainly for the the producers has to be something that they are encouraged by at this point. They may be chuck but I tell you what I wouldn't trust these Arabs as far as I could throw end. Eight you know if you think that oil prices are gonna remain at 35 dollars a barrel. I don't know me. I just. You've got Iran and its just. Dying to pump more oil and I'll tell you what. If Iran starts to throw oil on the market. You can bet your bottom dollar that Saudi Arabia and matched them so if say Iran in Nyack Q2 or Q3. Throws an extra half a million barrels on the market. Saudi Arabia will increased discounts and keep up with them in terms of market share. I don't think I Iran is going to be allowed to push around Saudi Arabia and Iraq. In a look at Iraq as well. Both of those countries chuck. Had the ability to send oil back down to twenty bucks a barrel and heartbeat. Yeah that they absolutely do you're gonna have to watch this over the next three to five months just to see. If any type of deals actually act you know followed by anyone who's making you you really don't know it's not you know again we've seen the weakness of OPEC time and time again where you have a can hold together for. Not periods of time but they do not have the staying power because a lot of times these countries is don't like each other they really don't. Now the big eighty. REI history question for you what was the clashes second. Studio album ever released 68680s. Or text number evidently we have many bands of the clash. What was the clashes second studio. Album that was released again or text number is 68680. Employees get an apple watch for 25 dollars but there's a catch actually you'd have to exercise in order to get the watcher at. Yet this is aid deal being offer that your company called the vitality group and they are health services firm in their attempting to sell this to. Odd different companies pretty much they are trying to get people to sign up to use the apple watch in order to improve employee wellness. If you get the apple watcher pay 25 dollars forty don't need to pay full price but. If you do not complete your monthly requirements for exercise. You have to pay full price for it. At the end of what is it a two year period I believe yeah well it's it's an interesting idea to try to get more people on board here. Got a number of companies that have signed up or down prize you and his target. They got a budget cut of their employees on it. And there you know companies are doing this not -- truest reasons they're doing it because they know if they can help their employees improve their health. It decreases their health insurance cost and that's what this is all geared towards that they want us to you know lose weight lower blood pressure and reduce our risk of heart disease. Exactly the they CA does have some provisions built into it that allow for reduction of premiums. In the event that you have employee wellness programs in place that those amounts by the way there's discounts could be as much as 30%. Of the cost of health coverage and so I think a lot of employers are looking at this saying look. We've seen these cost increase quite a bit over the last. You know two to three years if there's something we can do or look maybe we pay an additional five or 6% to do this the get a 30% discount when it's all said and done. It would make sense from a financial perspective. Now picture it you know I was talking to my cousin yesterday and he was asking about is investment portfolio. Which was all comprised. A righty a different mutual funds. So I was looking at the mutual funds and I said too much so what are you paying in terms of expenses. For that mutual fund and he looked at me like. I I had two heads he didn't understand what is taught he thought he is buying. No load mutual funds and that as a result there's no expense associated with those no load mutual funds. The fact of the matter is some bonds some mutual funds when they are load funds or no load funds. Had very high fees and expenses associated with this matter fact chuck I sent to a list by our researcher and analyst Ryan FitzGerald put together a list. Ryan's a CFA and did you see some of the expense ratios on the mutual funds that he sent over tea it's not cheap. And it it can be. Three and 45%. A year the year paint to a mutual fund company to invest your money in stocks and bonds can be very high. And what I would suggest just have a suggestion for. I want you to call my office and transferred guide the guide is it called understanding before fund fees and expenses. The issue that a lot of advertisers have had on these platforms. Is oftentimes hey it's impossible to target specific people. Three grads beat it is impossible to know the ads are actually running when they're supposed to do see it's impossible to pick actual. The exact time slot that you want your ad to run in sort AT&T is doing is they're saying look. We have figured out in the year 2016 how to actually do this which is mind blown that this hasn't been here. To this point in this type of advertising. And they're going to allow advertisers to pick target audiences to pick specific time slots and get a lot more data about who's watching their ads actually. So it they know that you've been browsing her car let's say your car is old and you've been looking at cars. Bill be able to target TV ads towards what you bit. Exactly they're gonna be able to or simply directly target based on I don't know if they're gonna be able to tell that much OPEC. But they will be able to target certain demographic groups and things like that so they'll be able to get a little bit more targeted you won't see you know BMW ads going to people that are making 20000 dollars it. Well in other markets mean you can. You know due to protect him which of course. You know they give every culture he like gave me every culinary. Culture has some sort of soups you know it would be huge shock. But for now they seem to be more US focused in it just. Or general Paul thanks for joining us and I enjoy the weekend all right. Thank you appreciate Paul Monica from CNN money if you do wanna take a look at panera on your own has that ticker. You know we're seeing a continued. Mergers and acquisitions in this whole sector related to self driving cars. And yesterday we saw I was actually late last night we saw continental by sensor technology for self driving cart dot continental. Is the European company. And they're buying the sensor technology company but it finished no bones about it and it they're buying it chuck because. Continental wants to get into the business of supplying laser technology. For self driving cars and technology that they have is amazing. Yet this is when you talk about a lot of the vehicles now they can. Hockey view and Alain on a highway or judge the distance to a vehicle in front of you this the type of technology that we're talking about him. You know we've seen in the last several years. Some you know semi autonomous vehicles. Coming on the road Mercedes is introduced a lot of this technology where. You're on the highway your car and essentially maintain. You know the proper distance from the car had a view it'll just speeds and not just since it's not just stand. Cruised into the edges adding Volvo's. Going to be entering this market a lot this summer with their new car coming out. It's going to be pretty much driving itself while you're in traffic it's going to be it's going to be a revolutionary thank. Yet it's you're getting to the point now where you know this type of innovation it's much like we saw with air bags back in the 1990s were first started on the high end cars and now you look around 1520 years later. Every car's got at least dual airbags he of law with curtains now on the air bags and things like that and that's where this technology is gonna goes well. It you know it it makes you wonder if they have to do anything to the roads in the surpluses. In order to help the technology adapt. You know is it gonna take a big highway bill in order for this technology to work efficiently they because you wonder you know are these cars going to be able to sense that other vehicles are coming in their way. The big question is how weather and snow that's that's the big one that is still out there just because a lot of these vehicles. Their systems they rely and lane markings and if those are covered up in obscured by snow very difficult for them we are out of time for the day. Thank you very much for listening please make sure.
