Evident look on her neck and into another bidder avoidable struggled. That's certainly have the right while senator McConnell may claim. Some unanimity of opinion among Republicans on the Judiciary Committee. He cannot clean unanimity even when it comes to Republicans the United States senate on the wrong side of the road on this American. Ahead in the wrong direction with her and them crash is going to be very very. I think. Hope bad for them right now we're in the grips a new level of public instruction by the senate Republicans. It's sad case. The world's greatest deliberative body he can deliver. And my view and now confidently say the view here virtually everybody in my comfort. Does that nomination should be made. About a program that people left. In the election is under way right now. Your news your voice to the boston.com. Morning show on the voice of Boston WORK. You're heading north to boston.com or. In children is this morning to continue this conversation with Jeff Jacoby from the Boston Globe it's just great to have begins to. You good morning it's great to be with you terrific to have use a lot. All of this Supreme Court. Issue you said you could be nominees are just nominate you and we can get over all eyes are opened a law degree I definitely got my lodge agree I you know I did well hidden in common law. It's been awhile but even if I need some you know a bit of boning Gupta they get the clerks say are you most of the heavy lift is or what exactly. Yesterday announced by the GOP did their you know they're essentially not going to consider. And I got to meet. They're not gonna discuss a Supreme Court nominees president put forth your stamp on that I'm aware of the Republicans who is gonna lose here. Any. It happened there can and you know we know enough about the way politics works to know that you can be taking a strong stand today and find yourself. Buffeted by the winds of controversy tomorrow and may be pushed into position. He didn't expect to be in. I you know I think anybody who's gotten past what's the third grade level in following politics in America. Know that there's so much self righteous posturing going on on both sides right there are no they're no saint in this President Obama. You know what he was in the senate. For the book before he was president he filibuster the nomination of of Justice Alito. Chuck Schumer who we pick and that was him that we just heard a you know the world's most deliberative body won't even deliberate definitely would call the senate. The world's most reports that sent shivers. You know that back you know and they would have went party. Labels were reversed you know he was making the same argument. What's at stake isn't a question of whether the Supreme Court can function because it functions perfectly well they have oral arguments this week. There's nothing in the constitution that has has been nine members of the nine justices. There're there are eight sitting justices now when. It it's all about replacing one of the most. Influential conservative voices on the court and all parties know that that's a very important seek to feel that it can have an impact way into the future. I would've I would have liked to have seen. Both sides spoke the White House and the senate Republicans. After school he had died personally would have liked us in the take a couple of days before it writing into the politics. That they have to leap into the political fight before the U for the body was even cold. But beyond that I would have liked to have seen both sites they there's clearly a lot of emotion and a lot of hi feeling in the north high blood on this on this vacancy route to work together to protect cope with some. We have some nominee that that also it can obviously neither side had an interest in doing that. So we'll see how it plays out right. I think that the Republicans have drawn. They have dug their heels so deeply. That it's hard to imagine that it that anything other than. Typhoon is gonna get them right I got her way I think it's done on the other hand let's see if Obama surprises all of us but coming up with a nominee that. That's a surprising that this really surprised that doesn't seem to be an attempt to push the court more to right. Right I mean at first I thought that might be what would happen it you know it showed that. He could say now now woody get it right you know Chris not present this person in high in terms individual way but now. I don't think it makes any difference who we brings forth I really don't I think at this point. You know they've dug their heels in and this is the positions that Republicans taking what's. Clear you you're both sites speaking as a it was important principle at stake it's politics and and let's be clear politics was always meant to be a part of the process the framers of the constitution. Designed to systems so they would have clashing interest whenever there was a vacancy on the court. President's nominee congresses of the senate has to. Approved a congress can impeach justices on the other hand justices you have like termed. Have a Mexican to ready to count this coming weekend making the argument that. The whole process would be less politicized. If Supreme Court justices served specific terms head were had term limits. Limits of but the eighteen years right if the president knew that every two years no matter who was in the White House there would be Supreme Court nomination. It would make it seem as though the whole week to the world was riding on the outcome of any given point vacancy. Absolutely ago. There are many people who argue though that by doing this the Republicans are being obstructionists do you believe that children they go I mean they they hold all the cards should they go ahead. Here this through and and say look we don't want them. And and and we're the good guys. My own personal view apart from political considering miles apart in reality is always that more talking is better than less talking and it. At this and I recognize you and I recognize how were pitting Republicans correctly right when they say look if the shoe was on the other foot the Democrats to be doing the same thing the Democrats pretty much did the same thing. And I think I am I I I think I would have just as I would have opposed it. Had Democrats been doing it I'm not happy to see Republicans doing it which is why. This is on pace for a really would like to see Obama shocked everybody by come up with a nominee that will be very hard for Republicans. That refuse once suggested I saw somebody throughout was. What about polling backs hundred he'll hire an arsenal let's the I'm not quite sure Thursday. But this is capable of doing that though she I think she is capable but is he capable of economic anybody you I know but at this from a stubborn all I don't know I don't know I. And the idea that the that the president is somehow operating promote from a position. Righteousness. And and and untainted. Sincerity. Where's the Republicans are to be these mean that's the right politicos like you know like the fact that we all know that if he's gotten beyond third grade and a better yet. It's 856 your WRK you know boston.com morning chat. Live from the boston.com. Newsroom. It's the boston.com. Morning shown in my view and I it's. And now for the inflated view here virtually everybody in our conference. That nomination Tuesday night. By the president that people left. In the election that's underway right now with Kim K arrogant and John meter Terrelle. Odds. Now that we love Nevada. And thank you. Okay voice of Boston's WRK EL. 904 here was a large hail boston.com morning show what we're doing is worth here's the studio I Jeff Jacoby from the Boston Globe now I want to committed because I think this is very different story. You were to think it's your anniversary here at the glow. Is Kim February 24. 1994. My first column appeared in the globe yes and a cellular the first line of that first column was so what's a nice conservative like me doing in a newspaper like this. And then I still remember getting up a call that morning from a friend. Who. Marveled he was he was astonished and I had like you still remember his works reworked. You're right there on the page. Ellen Goodman and a half a death was considered something of a number of personalized right so and so here you are talking elegantly integrated more civil. Indeed Ari do you feel your excepted here in the building everybody loves coming here outlined in the archives and I I. They consider are you a funny article and it won't let you actually view it I'll. I think I did just cut him out he did an even there was no problem. Arkin got back that far. Like the year and I we need to put into alignment the problem did not like that out again. What's your Debbie here let's talk about the selection of. Ever seen anything like you know it's really frightening it's it it really is. One of those moments when you find yourself thinking wild media can happen here. You look at it for years we've looked at banana republics with they're cut deals with that. You know the strong man who did who who get these enormous passionate following and no matter what they say that the mob is with them. And you always think that kind he could never happen in America and I'm I'm still. I'm still pretty sure that there's no chance that note from apple will become president or even if he can get the Republican nomination but a fuel slightly less sure with every. Passing. You know with every passing day and and does this year emotionalism. Of his followers. Nothing to do with issues nothing to do I deal is nothing to do with policy nothing to governing. Everything to do with. With with with with his attitude and it's kind of cult of personality that I I just never thought. American voters were expert it. Well it does it's Dick. In your mind does it speak volumes about where this country is gone I mean what what what if we Don. With Washington down to this country is that Washington is it what the country has done to itself I don't know I mean I'm a little leery of saying that there's one simple. Explanation for Imus you know I'm I've spent a career being critical of Washington and and government getting too big game. And being too intrusive in people's lives and all the rest of it. Texas to hide in and and and you know the the if you look at just the way money flows in this country specific the most the biggest thing that the government does is take money away from from some Americans and you know and and and give it to others and it's certainly. You know people have gone to a rough patch the Great Recession. You know ended years ago but a lot of people still still run mired in it but we've gone through cycles like this before and it's never content but it's never content something. Something different has happened and I I I doubt that there's just one single right exploration. I part of me thinks. Some this might have to do with the whole Internet revolution and with the change in in tone and culture that the Internet with its culture of instant. Instant response right usually billions and nasty front has fueled right there's a lot of the anonymity of it. The anonymity random is an opposite ends and the idly you know you go virtually I've got to check everybody's comments but. You know you look at the comments section understands that appeared in the newspaper. 90% of what's there is almost always nasty vicious right and economist. I think that's got some to do with it. There there the whole lomb. The idea that everything is politics and that everything becomes politicized he eventually was gonna reach a point where you see the the outcome but everything is politics than nothing matters more to politics. And I don't know I mean I'd like to think that America still retains a half of it's a backbone and and character to have to pull itself out of this but right now revision to duplicate vicious spiral. So as you look at this because we keep talking about this here on the show them the Donald Trump phenomenon you know. And and did the question keeps being over the last couple of weeks specifically. You know what can be done to stop him can he be stopped. The American people are saying they don't want GameStop so far anyway what we've seen from the voting that's taken place. What do you say did that all conservatives yet yes and don't wanna see him to stop a single server oh aptly he's no conservative he is he isn't. You know and if I've got any street cred as a conservative. And I you know when I like to think that I do after after all these years of of planting my flight of the Wright a Donald Trump is certainly in no kind of no kind of respectable conservative. The very fact that on virtually any position he takes you can find an example from seeing exactly the opposite. Sometimes just a matter of hours before sometimes you know weeks or months or or three years before says that there's no. It's not about. And. A world view based on the certain understanding of how society in America is supposed to work there's nothing like that with him. It's it's it it it's its personality. Its characters. In his case a very bad character. When you exceed that every time he. He gets before crowd he starts as it were thumping his chest. Talking about how he gets bigger crowds and anybody he gets the highly educated he gets the poorly educated you always always. That the bracket dose shield and it's just something so ugly and so vulgar. The kind of thing that my idea of of a real conservative Johnny at Ronald Reagan. Or William F Buckley to take you to a non a non politicians. The kind of conservatism that they would that they would have revival of the that they stood against. The whole career. Can he be stopped of course again but the way to stop them is to vote against him. The polls continue to show the majority of Americans say they would never that they don't support from a majority of Republicans in most polls continue to say they don't like trump. As long as he's facing a divided field. 30% 35% is enough to win you to win primaries and caucuses. If it coalesce is. Down to a two person field. Then there's a lot. You know that it can be stop a people vote but what are the chances of that well that's that too little too late you know I mean it's gonna have to have it doesn't happen before Tuesday I think it's about right yeah I have about a week you'll have to mar village of these drug brilliant campaign. Are you marketing line marketing what you might not be able tell you game plan ones but somehow someway he's walked in this stuff in the goal. Yeah and I don't know if it said. Well I don't its brilliance on his part but on the part of his. Campaign managers or at them the moment. The campaign of the moment met the man and this was the only year in which somebody running as. Vulgar and ugly and contents free campaign. As Donald Trump could possibly have done it. I mean we all thought from the very beginning when he gets up his announcement speech in talks about Mexicans being rapists and all the rest of it that it that that he was shooting himself. You know and the Friday that we alternate over the head. Before I was over. Right and I put on one thing Geffen John McCain is no here oil like people who weren't captured. And and and you know like it's in the middle Fifth Avenue and and a shoot some pretty dead in my supporters would still follow me. That's why I say this the strongman phenomena the code you owed that the that the banana republic mindset. I can't believe that America is descending to something like that. But you know it's you have long enough and you see everything I mean it's it's it's a scary phenomenon do you talk about these were. Well all of my favorites left left threes really early I I'd like Scott Walker I like Bobby Jindal. I can had to think for for Rick Perry I doubt that his his record as governor of Texas you just actually phenomenal. They were the first three gorloks. I'm I'm used to to get it to picking people who don't window elections especially in Massachusetts. Of those who are left. You know right. I just originally thought voting for rubio I could. Like it if it came down to a if you were still voting for case think I'm. On the on the democratic side. I'd like. Bernie Sanders a whole lot better than Hillary Clinton because like Bernie Sanders as much as I disagree with him and everything act actually means what he says says what he means has the core of conviction that. That I doesn't exist and who have Clinton. But it's it's a scary in. Crazy time we're talking Jeff take over from the Boston Globe with 913 here in the WRKO boston.com. I ninety here the network you know Boston got its. Around the holidays and just to go to the Boston. This morning talk he's Jeff that you wrote today. About making a trip. Cuba right well I thank you for mentioning it op Ed agency's Boston Globe and Boston Globe that cup. IA IG IT have opposed all along President Obama is a normalization of relations with Cuba. For reasons of exporting and Tony of past columns but I think that you can you can be a supporter of the outreach or the normalization. The thaw in ties and still have a lot of questions about the wisdom of Obama make this trip to Cuba next month. The president said as recently as December to two months ago. But he would like to visit Cuba but but that would depend on there being. Clear measurable significant progress human rights democracy now as I think most people ought to know Cuba is the only. Totalitarian dictatorship in the entire Western Hemisphere and of all the of all the countries in in the Americas North America Latin America the cured my only Cuba is dictatorship. There are a lot of countries that the president hasn't been too. Maybe 200 countries in this role he's visited fiftieth present that leaves a 150 countries that he could go to. If if his criterion for visiting Cuba was that he wanted to encourage the improvement of human rights democracy. That shouldn't be going right because human rights and democracy have moved backward over the past years since the normalization began. More people are being rested beaten thrown into thrown into. Prison there's been a crack down on churches. That the the hard currency that's pouring into Cuba now. Because of the easing of the economics right is being used by the Castro regime to bolster its dictatorship things are clearly getting worse. So if the president's. Criterion was I will go if IC progress in human rights and he shouldn't be going but he's he's. You know it took less than two months he's he's broken that pledge he says he will go when he's asked about his quote in the I think it was the Wall Street Journal was well it'll be fun. Enough okay I'll show our funniest good I want people to have fun and their lives but we're talking about a presidential. Visit a visit at a very historic prison right it was there's not gonna you're sitting US president on the soil there for almost ninety years ninety year and I I can't help but thinking that this India and is more about. What Barack Obama thinks is good for his legacy than what he thinks is good for the people of Cuba. And let me ask you Jeff why would what's happening in Cuba be good for his light because there is. As they go backward. Why in the world would he seat that is being good for his legacy because he believes as he has argued since before he became president. That the proper role of of the United States or its enemies in the world should be one of outreach should be one of engagement. His policy all along has been too. You know to embrace and show. A willingness to. To make concessions to. Enemies of the United States to countries like Iran. To Vladimir Putin. It's to exit to the to the dictators in China. Cuba as you know for many years especially on the hard left both in this country and internationally has been a kind of Fidel Castro's from the rock star for the international laughed. The the Michael Moore making those movies singing Castro's praises so I I I think that for Obama with the idea that he would be the president who ended the long. Freeze between America and Cuba. Outweighs. The value of what actually is tapping to Cuba's people. But I I make the point the continuity that a presidential visit is a big deal in most countries in this world. OK there are some countries England France where they're used to having American bureau American presidents come and visit. But when you're small Caribbean country. The idea that the United States president is gonna come. Air Force One all the high level trap atoms of a presidential visit that's a very big deal with a feather in the cap for the leaders of the country whoever those leaders are so why use. That prestige. Apiece though it. On the leaders of a of the more deserving country capsule right it's that some suggestions in the conference coupled Tunisia. Has recently become the only free democracy in the entire Arab world and that the Tunisian democracy group on the Nobel peace writes this past year. President Obama hasn't visited Tunisia if he's for a small country. That's moving in the right direction it wants to encourage that he wants to strengthen. Why not make a trip to Tunisia instead. Why not go to countries. Instead of going to a country like Cuba which has been a Communist dictatorship. Since 1960 and continues to write the oldest dictatorship and the only dictatorship in the Americas one go to countries that used to be Communist dictatorship. But have emerged from communism and are now free. Multiparty democracies I suggested Slovenia or Lithuania or Mongolia but there are many places that he could be going. Where were the leaders are friendly to the United States where they don't you know it where it's not Yankee go home where there with a have built a whole career throwing people in prison. It just disappoints me that a president. I think it it weakens us to I think it weakens that show you know just like what you said on a world stage to me this is another. I'm chink in the armor for weakening his position of the united shocking how tone deaf to use. I don't get it let it its tone deaf for part of the population and it's exactly what another part of our apparently shot craves that it's hearts it's hard to imagine how for so many on the left. Fidel Castro and Cuba is somehow kind of garden of Eden and and and you know the great savior. You look at the things that have been said by by by liberals and leftists in this country over the years. Gushing over over the over over dictator and hit it really is that. It's hard for offer for meat understand and sort of like actors and I marveled at it for years. I don't Alter is going to be a photo op with Fidel when he goes sent to Cuba but clearly if there was going to be that photo op he has to go to Cuba to do it. If it's not even as though there's a there's value in meeting role Castro was now the president he's met them already and he met him at at the that the summit in Panama he met him at the the the funeral for forum. Who was in South Africa for nothing else how well so he's met that he's met role Castro Wright for Dell is too old to travel and maybe. You know maybe in the works is the idea that there will be this iconic picture. Sort of like I'm Bill Clinton getting Yasser Arafat and you tuchman been to shake hands in the White House lawn. Maybe you know Obama and his people our management will be something like that for him but I think of all the good he really accomplishing or by going someplace where presidents appear. But what I got a person or what what would be the symbolism in that what would be there. Because nothing it's not moving in the right direction if we if it was a country and we get debit either gonna loosen up and open up and we're gonna see American tourists on their beaches. Where is he American businesses you know building but put that in the end for what would be very. I think for up for Obama for many of his supporters the human rights of the Cuban people is secondary it's less than secondary makes no sense that the greater value I think for many on the left is the guy the symbolism. And the reality of a ending. Ending what was seen as a standoff between the powerful United States and and you know one of the few remaining Communist. Regimes in the world. I I just think it's it's said as they say you don't have to support you don't you don't have to oppose the normalization. I do oppose it but but what can support. The process of normalizing relations. And still think. That a trip to Cuba by the presidency is going too far. Right right hey I agree I agree her percent where I I thought the piece was great play and I agree with that completely I. I think it's a huge mistake and I'm sorry to assume that it's gonna happen in night I think that the biggest mistake he made you know that was the answer why you gonna do it he said it might be fun there was a. What I saw Arnold. Go to Disney World and guess what Finland as you point out how he's ever been to the Bahamas and out. Go to Barbados underwrite small spot on the island war please note and have fun go to army and they've got casinos there to set a out of the cigars and golf courses. I don't elect isn't vineyard I guess in that's fine but you know it's added one irony of this is the only used to be said well American Americans in the 1950s they supported dictator Batista who. Who wants to Decatur but nothing like with the Castro's. But here you've got. A president who in the name of reconciliation. Is you could say. Turning the clock back and embracing. Once again a Cuban dictator. And I I just think the symbolism is all wrong this something's wrong and when I think of of and I've I've been to Cuba I when I was at my priority was to meet with dissidents and and pro democracy activist. Doctor wrote a column a year after it went to Cuba about how every one of the dissident slate attempts to meet with. Had since been arrested and thrown in prison. It's a scary thing and you think it's from these people and what they've had to and you were right to speak up for democracy and freedom when they see the leader of the free world so called. Coming in in embracing their debt that the the dictator I'm sure he'll make some kind of jester of it's. Meeting with dissidents who presumably be carefully picked a curiously something it would be humiliating and embarrassing if he said nothing defensive human rights. But the but the the action of being there will speak a whole lot louder at the most and others Jeff Jacoby Boston Globe thank you. You for being a part of a generational whether terrific to have the year before he gets him. And it's 929 here on the W. ArQule boston.com more job. Current topical and trendy WRK go go boys of Boston. Hi this is very are strong host of the financial exchange futures point toward a lower open on Wall Street this morning.
