I. And this is the financial exchange we've Barry Armstrong. First greens stay on top of breaking business news and learn how to manage your money to help you towards a more secure future and now broadcasting live from the insurer mentioned John John studios it's the financial exchange with your host well. Marie Armstrong. I'm joined by trucks not a today and I'll tell you what it just seems like the beatings will continue until morale improves. That's what seems to be going on the stock market down again today. Just tough out there tough out there and lecturer at target. Yet target really one of the few companies that in this in this earnings cycle has been able to come out. And actually post decent top line and bottom line numbers we saw revenue growth that exceeded expectations. Earnings growth that exceeded expectations while they guided. Higher for the rest of the year assuming that that's pretty much the trifecta right there they hit on all cylinders in the quarter. And really over the next couple. They're expecting to continue to show some strong growth so how are they avoiding the Amazon contagion that is crippling you look at companies. And you know Wal-Mart you look at. I don't JC Penney Macy's other retailers in general. Getting crippled yet target continues to do well in gross sales how is target define. Every all the other retail well it is a little surprising to me especially considering that remember. Eighteen months ago we are talking about how his target and a bounce back from the hack that they had where they had over forty million credit cards. That were hacked and that was just back in December rather November. Of 2013. So. When you look at the company I think what differentiates them a little bit from. Your wal marts of the world it's a slightly higher quality of merchandise OK and so just competing on price better experience when you walk in a store news Islam at all it's it's it's definitely better than Wal-Mart and Kmart many of those types of stores but you're gonna pay a little more. And then those stores but you typically get slightly better products there here's the difference right. You take your kids tool Wal-Mart than wall where the calls right if you try to buy your kids' clothes at Wal-Mart they were aware of it won't Wear armed school. You go to target that's where you buy your back school shop yeah I mean it's it's got against slightly higher quality merchandise and so I think that that type of experienced. Is able to appeal to a broader group of people that Wal-Mart when people are going to Wal-Mart they're simply competing on price and convenience. And it's becoming very difficult to compete against Amazon on those two types. Of criteria at this point just because they're so big they have such good pricing power and obviously the convenience. It's much easier to order online and then to try to go into wall Miami just waiting trapped and everything. Good luck note do well. I'll tell you what target's shares up 4% on their earnings announcement yeah we got inflation data this morning I gotta I I don't know. If this is enough to sway the dead in September but they at CPI coming in point 1%. Decelerating. From the point to that had been expected. Year over year you've got inflation of one point 8% I've asked the question before. Which is how do you raise interest rates in a low inflation environment the reason for raising interest rates historically. Has always been on the part of the Federal Reserve to raise rates when you've got inflation fears there is no inflation fear. And I think that's dead is what's holding back stocks right now you'll get stock prices I think the fear of rate hikes and is holding back stock prices today. Well I think that's fair because when you look at any type of asset that's out there whether it's homes whether it is is equities. What you're really looking fours you're looking to find out okay if if I'm buying just a risk free treasury or something like that what is my rate of return going to be in itself doesn't make sense to go into equities or housing or whatever it is and I get a better rate than that some more and so that's why when rates go up. Those types of assets typically struggle a little bit in the short term because they're adjusting to that rate hike but when we look at something like inflation now OK and here's the point that that'll make with regards to it let's say that we have everyone is sitting in cash right now which look which got trillions of dollars. That are sitting in cash in CD's in short term bonds and things like that. And they are earning essentially negative rates of return to rise because what you have your book inflation last month was point 1%. But what you got on your bank account was point 0001%. So. Essentially the interest that's earned there is almost acting like a drag on the economy because it's growing slower. Than inflation so your your losing purchasing power and that does hurt the economy in the long run. Well you know the we'll what we'll have to wait at at the you've got an economist or any storm warning very. Yes because we have a and we've got a fed meeting of fed notes come out get 2 PM today so will be able to interpret that data. Well one of the best economists in the world joining us tomorrow morning to help us break it down. Be glad you do not live in Chicago we've all been griping about gas prices I've been telling ya oil is down at 42 dollars a barrel and have been complaining that we're paying 250 to sixty just some of your pain to nineteen gallon but you sure have to shop around fine tuning nineteen gallon. In Chicago though chock gas prices up at 323. Gallon I guess that major refinery problems in Chicago. Yes that's really what has happened there is there have been a number of different refinery and pipeline outages really across across the country and what we've seen. Is that certain areas have essentially been cut off somewhat from some of the supply and so you're ending up with what we see right now were previously it was in California we had this pocket where you saw gas up in the high threes a gallon. And what you're seeing now is in parts of Chicago now you're seeing prices in that low three dollar range as well it's up because. The gas isn't available simply because it's not available. There somebody making a lot of money here the refiners are killing right now if you're in the refining business I don't know. I say I we will know for probably the I don't know 180 days it's gonna take several quarters but your a look at return reef refinery earnings. I've got to believe they're going to be huge I don't know. They will just because especially with what you're starting to see you right now with cresting supply in the US you're starting to see that supply. Tilting downward slightly and so I think if you continue to see that. There's actually gonna be on. Pressure on refineries need to start cutting costs where as previously. They've been able to have some pricing power because their supply or rather the demand for their services has greatly outstrip the supply but if you start to see that that essentially. Curve of oil production. Really capping off I think that you actually can see some pressure on the refineries to start lowering cost well there's two schools of. Not a and we will be joined by Michael Kay from Bloomberg intelligence. You know easy there's a school of thought. Bad oil prices are gonna go down to twenty dollars a barrel their 42 right now and then there's another school thought that oil prices are gonna go to sixty dollars a barrel now. I'd I'd advise you in the past during the last three or four weeks I have suggested to you. That you might want to. Fill up your home heating oil tanks and just kind of hedge your bets I'm not sure I've given up the act the most accurate advice they'll be in in retrospect. You know there's a large group of people. Including some very successful money managers who are suggesting it's going to twenty dollars a barrel so. Why don't you do this may be wait until this after this next interview before you decide what the gonna buy your home heating oil. Vowing to critics ever source revises. Their plan for their New Hampshire power line. This good news for people who live in New Hampshire. I there was a lot of resistance to this ever source power line near gonna build. The vast majority of it above ground through the mountains and it was deemed to be. Problematic for the scenery of boo with the white mountains of New Hampshire. Yet in this is going to be a yards it's a 192. Mile long. Line that is going to be built to bring down hydroelectric power from Canada. Down in the southern New England. And pretty much what they agreed to do yesterday was to put sixty miles of it underground really all through white mountain national force because there were a number of concerns. That it you know the second that you start cutting out the forced to disrupt views you disrupt the wildlife there and they finally said look we we need to get this project moving. And the reason for that is because there're couple other competing projects from other utilities. That are attempting to bring the same powered down and we're actually not sure there's enough demand in southern New England for all of that power NASA would they want. A new characters and a tough spot because that power isn't needed in New Hampshire it's needed in Rhode Island. Connecticut and Massachusetts. But they wanna run it through New Hampshire New Hampshire people are saying the heck with that I don't want that through run it through my backyard. Well an end the other thing that you have to remember with this is when we look at power demand in places like Massachusetts Rhode Island and Connecticut. Again you're starting to see more and more of both the rooftops or as well as utility scale solar starting to pop up in places now now we're a problem that truck goes to be it. If it's there in on a day like today it's terrific right because you're using less power you burning less and less natural gas. But what do you do in barber you still have to have the capacity to generate that electricity there's no doubt that you have to have the capacity OK but this that thing you're still gonna see there's peak demand is still going to end up being less there in terms of peak demand from the great if you have these other sources now what exactly those sources are you're gonna need a mix of all these different types he can't simply go with one of the guys obviously. If you're sitting there or so and get a cloudy day. All of a sudden if there's snow coming down is sadness and will look we can't do and well in and just think about last winter when there's probably ten weeks in a row where you were generate much in the ways so we weren't getting much in the way of sore but if you look win that you talk about some of those blizzards and so forth coming through. And that's why I say you have to have a mix you don't simply rely on one source just like you don't that you don't have all natural gas plants are all coal. You have a mix so that you can essentially choose based on what is available. At regular Patton deal price is that you're able to find and so that's what I think you need to see and that's what I think you're going to see in the long term in those states were. All right up next you're gonna get some information that will help you decide. What to do about your oil prices should you be locking in your oil prices for this winter. Should you be filling your tanks now we're gonna ask those questions of Michael Kay from Bloomberg intelligence. Got married Armstrong. From the financial exchange radio network. For family house they have near Yale it's the three Stanley that you have your holy cross you know the properties that are over near Boston College rental properties sure how does one all those and still protect themselves the biggest problem with rental property is the risks of a lawsuit to slip and fall parties someone got hurt in Europe if you own your own name folks then they're gonna who use the property owner directly and if they send you directly in that single after every. Asked you owning your own name your other vacation homes and home ever owned your commercial properties personally owned them in an LLC that the key I would set it up and some kind of a limited liability company throw in there and in Chile and if you're liable you're gonna lose is that one property. Follow along and endurance for the financial exchange own FaceBook. Give up FaceBook dot com slash financial exchange and this is the financial exchange radio network. We're broadcasting from the insurance matching dot com studios and we are joined by. Michael K he's an energy analyst at Bloomberg intelligence. Hello Michael. Went down effect Saturday. We're glad to help us understand oil because. I'm look at that David coach doc who's pretty well respected money manager he say in oil could go to fifteen to twenty dollars. A barrel in animal and an oil price stock common their taught us all the reasons that oil could spike in price and a lot. So which is it is oil gonna go up to sixty dollars a barrel or a canoe down to twenty dollars of her. Yet so on other supplies make it. As we've seen over the last year so there's there's certainly been some added errors sentiment in the last few weeks. That could continue a little bit here going forward I'm. So the US rig count wrote wrote this month so devaluation in China bring into question the future demand growth. Their fears that Japan is we king and he also has the end of the US summer driving season with. Record inventory levels out all the factors of the downward pressure anchored and really you know. Oh outweigh any any outside potential it's Tuesday. Is it in Saudi Arabia's best interest to keep. Prices low so they don't fund their enemies. Issue well part of I think that it rated I think they're just looking to keep market share. You know they wanna keep our suggest that you copping out and patriotism with OPEC overproduction. Not just Saudi Arabia has. Oman is producing over a 1001000. The record and the really the other factor is the the possibility of hiring and production coming. Down. About Russia what are they doing with their oil production. There they're going. Played badly yes. You know in the US as well but Russia has been viewed these sort of her it is a little higher cost and so forth. I mean but you know Russia's meter meter crude oil play as well they're production as well. Go and the question. Is. It's gonna. Michael I told folks to fill up their home heating oil tanks last week at 43 dollars a barrel. You were able to buy home heating oil for I don't know a dollar 89 dollar 99. Per gallon did I make a mistake that I jumped the gun. Well you know I think you know is that distillate prices and despite gasoline prices you've seen them pull up a little stronger. And I think you know. You might be due for a little pullback in all. The one good thing with heating oil it is you're comet and during the season now so. Is it it might be better on the side and say you know in the fall when when demand picture might hurt or something like that. But do you see how I hiked prices right now for gasoline. And distillate at apple back is as much screwed although they pulled back 20%. You know last year or so. But you are seeing the refiners making good money right now of gasoline and distillate. We were talking about that earlier have you played that would too which companies do you think are benefiting from these is the refinery margins because I. I look at the price of gas somebody's making a lot of money refining oil. Yes sure you have a lot of the midwest refineries right now that are bringing him a lot of needing crude oil which is you know a lot lower. Price yeah it is mile stands between. Penetrate at a discount to WTI and other groups. So they stayed an assistant Brad. There are so a lot of in the midwest refineries that are better statement on had to shut down recently in India which is also driving. Gasoline prices higher. So they're finally in the midwest the big plays there it is they do get a lot of cheap it's meaning. Keepers and their partners on the coast where they have the. Got it got it our Michael thank you very much for your time appreciate. South of the bearish sentiment continues at my interpretation of what he just told well and and I think that when you look at this the biggest issues that we have right now. Is there is demand issue world on you do have China which is showing slowing demand the US has been shown pretty stagnant demand for the last couple years now you have really been seen much growth. And the reason for that it's not as Americans aren't driving weren't producing better fuel economy in vehicles and even trucks you look at the Ford F 150 degree increase the mileage by three to five miles per gallon and you talk to guys and almost trucks they love them a popular guy in or out and he loves his new. He's got the brand new aluminum bed yet says it's the best truck he had yeah and so I think that when you look at this. This is this issue right now that you about all of this oil that's been unlocked due to all of the new types of drilling whether we're talking for acting. Horizontal drilling whatever may be. You also of these vehicles now that are taking less gas to go the same distance and he also have less people in places like China that it previously previously been showing. Double digit vehicle growth that and I'll show all right look we may not actually seen that much growth over the next year and so they flattened out at what about a 1000007 million vehicles a year I think it's if notes it's it's well more than that oh per month and it's firm yet yesterday at my error 120 million dollar twenty million vehicles a year somewhere in that ballpark and you're just seeing the numbers really not showing any growth now so. If you look at this and it's it's a case where. You suppose it look I just don't seem to demand scenario for higher oil and the only way to get to higher oil than. Is it via the supply issue like we're seeing some of these isolated ones now but you need a bigger ones something that affects a global scale. In order to push it back in that 6080 dollar range. You know I every week on Wednesday sweet publish the list of the lowest cost home heating oil that we can find in your community. And like two in welcome all of our new listeners on WP OP in greater Hartford. In greater Hartford you can get oil for a dollar 94 per gallon but if you go to the North Shore of Boston. There's an oil company that sells oil for a dollar 75. A gallon that is the lowest price I've been able to side finding New England. If you blow let's see two other New London New Hampshire. In Franklin. There's a guy that's known for to a five. I've got an all over it if you go to our FaceBook page that financial exchange on FaceBook you'll find that list. Of the best home heating oil prices can always done is we've gone to the Internet and done some shopping on your behalf and we've gathered the data. So you can go to our website and and in and glean that data and and make a better buying decision. For your for your home heating oil because I'll tell you what. Huge disparities the unity you have these low prices but chuck the disparities in the differences. In home heating oil it's amazing. You see some companies that are still charging 259 a gallon and then you see other companies turgeon a dollar 75 a deal for home heating oil. Yet it's still somewhat of a fragmented market and I think that a major reason for that is people almost view only who you get your. You're heating oil from its not something people typically change you almost ran if you say okay this is the guy bought from last year I'm gonna bite from him this year and so and you do it because the service you know like I have a guy works well is easy and it works and I know if feet 2 in the morning my he goes out I can call my guy yeah made an emergency number and and did they show up and they pick it. It's it's pretty scary when it's February 10. And there's four feet of snow on the ground and use your heat. Yeah I've I've been fortunate for the last couple years I've been natural gas and so I haven't had to deal with that type situation but the mean grown up with my parents we deal with all the time. When we come back truck is not a is gonna tell us if there's any way to make money. On this new drug that was approved last night to boost women's libido any money to win any way to make money on that trucks ought to. Let us know you're listening to the financial exchange from. Todd we're talking about the different ways that you can only real state one of the things that comes up as in I've seen this before people all their real estate in what's called the nominee realty trust. Obvious question is. Is that trust going to protect the home from real estate. And just as importantly will avoid probate when you die with your home in a nominee realty trust. Well it's gonna protect a home from a nursing home most likely well actually I can tell you it won't talk and most times you go to your real estate lawyer residential real estate lawyer and unfortunately put people in these why do you think. Don't know and it's not their fault they're just not in that business and sell I think that they should always make sure you go to when estate planning attorney to get your trust work. Done OK and so in this case. One it's not gonna protect them from the nursing home. And so it may not even avoid probate folks if you have a nominee realty trust. Gold look at the schedule of beneficiaries and all that you'll find that it might sell your name yet but they're not ideal money data on their husband wife I see that answer so what did they accomplish try to make you sleep in their own and we accomplished nothing and that's exactly right it went right. Through the nominee realty trust right to them and and it's not even avoiding probate. And scary enough folks if you happen to pull that realty trust up and see the kid's name as the beneficiaries. Led US troops in the European in the European theater as well as the battle of the bulge. Our text number 68680. You know we are talking about this new drug or new pill again and again I guess its appeal. That has been approved to boost women's libido. Before we even get to the story 978 chimes in I'm a woman here's how you increase your libido. Do not eat wheat sugar or greens trucks ought to. I'm less concerned about women increasing their libido than I am about making money any way to make money on the steal a little concerned about both your. You like to see both he liked to he women increasing their libido and like to see people making money on the stock. Not when your 55 minutes the story for another neither here nor there let's let's look at the stock actually OK and rather the lack of the stock OK because the company that essentially owns the patent at this point a company called out pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals right now he's not a publicly traded company OK okay so. This is a company that the average investor cannot go into an invest in right now I say right now simply because. When you look at the pattern of money that sprout is raised they raised about a hundred million dollars over the last few years from outside investors who made private placements here. Those types of investors typically like to see a return on their investment in the next couple years just because they like to see. And you might have a I want sat out there they wanna get out. They wanna cash out in their own doctors and deal. So what I would expect to see is this is a company that could probably IPO in the next two to three years but there is no way for me in the individual investor today. To invest. Okay this is the first drug of its tight. To be approved correct. Yeah and and really the major reason for that is that the what you're trying to deal with with this situation is it's different from with a man. Women him at a different we note that our we're we're we're stealing or verses out or poem. I mean that's one way that you could put its shirt into rivers that are so. If you look at it the biggest issue with the man is getting the water to the Paul okay the biggest issue with women is simply. Figure that deciding that you want the plumbing to war and that's what this is supposed to do this in the doctors are very skeptical her I was reading medical reports on this drug. And doctors across the border are voicing. Severe levels of skill I'm skeptical too because this doesn't do anything from a physiological perspective. Two you're not increase you know trying to increase blood slower this or that. All you're trying to do is convince someone. That there in the mood right and hope that that doesn't up and so when you look at this there's there's a lot of skepticism here and even folks. Who are essentially. In favor of trying to figure out something that it will help increase women's libido say look this isn't necessarily the best way to go about it because all you're really doing. Is covering up other underlying problems you're not actually addressing. The root cause here and so I know that a number of doctors. Are pretty skeptical I know that a number. Women's groups are as somewhat skeptical of this this drug. And so when you look at it. You know it's up especially when you have the side effects here which that they're pretty numerous net they're pretty scary now what we need to do you know it is in there and saying OK painting a lawsuit you know loss of color to 10% of the people taken. They yeah it's it's it's not like this is a low number of people that are experiencing these side effects so when you look at this. I would have serious reservations about anyone I know using. I'd just final note on that story the FDA has approved when he for drugs for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction. This is the first one to be approved for one yup this is because of something that I think all of us know and that's men are simpler than when we were very easy to deal you know you look here's here's a pizza beer and a football game OK I'm ready for anything let's go. You're getting yourself in trouble when it's no I want you to want to wash the dishes it's like what does that even mean. Nia. The suspension for non cooperation. How did this this came out of the wood out of the blue. Yeah this came from Adam should after last night's so pretty much Brady would have to. Takes some sort of suspension it sounds like. Just saying like hey I've broken cooperated better fashion and I'll accept that but I think that's a key findings of the wells report I I think that's a big mistake and robberies part I think that tarnish his legacy. I don't think it's a huge mistake when you look at the fact that the NFL has previously punish people for not cooperating have been suspended people. No they they haven't put it in the example given very similar situation was that Brett Favre case where he can turn over his cellphone and he an up getting slapped with a fine in that situation right. And so why would Tom Brady take and that was Brett Favre situation by the way was much worse it involves sexual or worse and and it was. Thank you it was pretty bad and it went away very quietly. Brain knows that Brett Favre the golden boy. Of the NFL Tom Brady of the evidently part of evil empire of the together there's rumors that he'll have to Wear a Darth Vader mask during games this season but. I I think that when you look at this it's. I simply say look if if he says I'm willing to separate out the fact that I don't want to admit guilt to what happened because it didn't happen. Vs I'm willing to admit that I handled the situation poorly afterwards those are two completely different things neither will not not from the standpoint of public perception the standpoint of public perception won't change a few if the suspension is vacated. Alike became does all I can get I think it allows him to say hey. I was falsely accused of doing something wrong and all I fought it to the bitter end and I won and all the people in Indianapolis and Baltimore gonna say is it just shows how the patriots are in greater in you know they have their tentacles woven. Into the NFL and in into the judge's is it's it's not gonna change the minds people's minds have been made up now what had a zero games he thinks you know what happens at this point doesn't matter. Well I do think if he even if he wins and the NFL appeals. Yeah that's that's the biggest fear and all this is just my biggest fear is that this kind of dragged into 2016 it's gonna linger all over this season. And we just have to deal with this so tiger comes a settlement this is something that could drag on literally right goes through the appeal process. Vienna town in the NFL won't appeal. You don't think they would appeal now I think they want the ago I fell does not want this going on for two or three and I think and that just reinforces my point that Brady's making a mistake no Brady's doing the right thing judges like people who come to the table and say look I'm trying to negotiate a settlement of the NFL's holding firm on something. As in look that's a pretty big concession for Tom Brady to make if beautiful saying that's not good enough. Just gonna look at him and say look you have no case to begin with beauty handled this poorly and kick in the case out there don't. Yeah I just a quick update here they are meeting today we won't have any updates until they adjourn from ports there's no life tweeting or anything but meet Raymond. A Reuters just tweeted that judge Berman sets an August 31 hearing in saying that Tom Brady and Goodell must attend. And the judges meeting with lawyers today and our friend Michael McCann. Falls up that tweet saying that. A judge hopes required operating adults who attend the August 31 hearing. And wall make settlement more likely but I wouldn't count on it. Good that I help McCain's right now I will be very. I may be seeking to book him for more details and correct side there. Or it up next Wu we will be joined by Scott gam from the street where pocket Apple's Home Depot and target. You are listening to the financial exchange from the insurer match dot com studios. Our guest is Scott jam from thestreet.com we're talking about apple. Is down nineteen points from its high nineteen. In nineteen dollar from its high of 134. Scott how are you today. Our great area could see alike and apple are you ready to sell what are your thoughts. Well look at these restrictions Kramer just issues you know basically saying that the stock to own not to trade you know a lot of people were. It is disappointed by the 47 million or so I point that it's so old its most recent earnings report. But again you know. People at a migrate produce new models and of course. Apple hasn't at a media event on September 9 where they're expected to announce even newer models of the phones so that is the company over. If consumers are hooked on the brand. And you know having an iPhone for the year. Is certain sentiment and then every time and about comes out people seem to flock towards the so that's that's a business myopic and certainly has some more room. Furcal slapped. Scott here's a question for in and I'm an apple shareholders shall I look at this. And I see a company that the iPhone continues to be strong but. The problem is that the company isn't seeing turn over rates and things like their ipads. That are as high as they had initially anticipated how they go about turning around that market. Because it does seem to be flagging a little bit at this point. Well it mean to bring up a good point that apple so heavily reliant on one device and that is the Eiffel but that's the united historians certainly. You know as we he'd be good or iphones. You know because of Smartphone devices internal widgets that Samsung will lead. You know two new updated version account and notified the galaxy at six edge plus a boat has. You know. Bigger screens that there are full and so he'd be yeah at that point he's Serb accomplished mature your tablets out and so. You know certainly. These companies are heard that following the preferences of the consumer. Turner now let's take a look now on at another company Home Depot probably my favorite store out there to be honest. On what exactly do you see going on for them over the next twelve months there's. Well look and the feel at Home Depot and it's a consumer story to housing story and we saw just this week we saw how it starts to rise. You know in July if this is their highest level since before the recession it's been you know great news for. Stores like common people because you have a new house you're gonna need to buy furniture paint all those items that are terrorist political people we also saw. Home builder. National you can of homebuilders index. Right with a pencil in nearly a decade so again we're seeing and improve housing market and we saw that at home Depot's earnings give up its. Revenue guidance. For the rest of the year. Now when you look at this is there any reason why company like Home Depot. Is out performing something like a Bed, Bath & Beyond which you think you know Bed, Bath & Beyond you need new furniture when you're moving in the new houses and things like that. Or even lows like me they'd be and yeah whose understanding that grows in use the same store growth they've beaten lows. For 25 quarters general. Yeah look I mean again. Some of these sort of overlapping consumers can certainly hope people of lows does that. That that that's beyond a little bit of a different type of product mix of course there right now more focused on the back to school season. Which is certainly heating up at but again I think as the consumer continued to show scientists trying to. We saw the value of housing it has been the retail sales data is going to beat these retailers move forward. Now turning to look at a company that reported on earlier today we had target come out with really a bang up quarter even guiding higher. Over the rest of the fiscal year. What are you seeing from them what are they doing so well in order to keep customers where other retailers are struggling. Well look I mean there really focusing on digital channel scroll to try rose 30%. This quarter and 38%. In first quarter so that's huge for them and again they're really focused in on the approaching their comedy channel so they want people in applying online. Going to the store that you order from you know apps. There's Smartphone all the different channels. Did the end of the day that still Bristol Bristol is stemming back to cargo regardless of what platform you're using it. Of course they just let them management shake ups earlier this week which came as a surprise a lot of people but certainly you know that the company that. Which which many analysts say is financial bought from that tweet routine data preachers behind them. Yet they're still trying to win back some customer they lost and certainly competitive environment out there and that's where we're seeing targets. You know reliant immortal their promotions. When you look at their success that they've seen on the line and moving more towards that platform. Is it as a result of our exit one time sales that they were offering that they are the reason that people are moving over there because. It's it's a difficult business to compete online with Amazon's of the world what are they doing that's making them so successful in making that transition. Well look they're they're trying to be very promotion happy with Patricia things. You know percolate. And you know again we can't go back to the consumer. Because these companies are largely reliant on the strength of consumer and so we and we don't just put carpets. He's no. It in the end of the summer which they didn't sort of perverse they're swamped. You know that's gonna translate. And to be no better guidance for part of which is exactly what we saw in this morning's report. Capsule Scott thanks for coming out of this they appreciate all the info on these companies. Are much. Why do you write EEC like Home Depot you like him better at Lowe's or is it just a convenience while for me I live literally right next to home people on the block away so I can walk their bring stuff back if it's light but. You know I think what when I look at Home Depot I just like the feel of their stores battery from the peoples to seem incredibly knowledgeable there and I've always just had a pretty your listeners is that Lowe's and knew what I like about Lowe's over Home Depot. Is I think their garden centers a little better than the guardian I have been a little bit let down with some of the garden supplies that have gotten at Home Depot I don't know I don't have a huge yard so it's not a big deal to me at this point. Bomb button lords it over the. As is terrific from that standpoint you wanna go by tomato plants went by. Really anything you want you go through lows and prices are your house has really good garden right prices is Wal-Mart. You go to super Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart does have good guard Percy out here you know he wanted to but just some shrubs and things like I'd be surprised at how well you do. And that night I saw a sign of shock. You can use EDT cards to buy a tomato plants at Wal-Mart. That's up and actually you notice they accept that in any vegetables any vegetable plants that your buyer vegetable seeds you can buy used EDT cards. Two to buy over the course of the year that actually makes more sense you'll save money doing that over the course of six months or so now I guess yes. Hi what we're going to be talking about. We're going to be talking about student loans and if you have student loans especially those federal loans your wanna pay close attention because we're to have Michael Stratford. I think you should get this this control put on your kids while the world learn more about it. Now I've got coming up during the course of this hour almost dread going to take a look at the stock market it was down a couple hundred points just a few minutes ago chuck. You know we're down a 179. On the Dow right now twenty on the S&P and about 47 on the NASDAQ so about a 1% pull back. On all three of the major indices and and really I think what we're expecting here. Is. Enough of that really what we're expecting here when it's all said and done is that you're gonna see some continued weakness for awhile what we saw at the open in international markets today the Shanghai index over in China was actually down about 5% until the government intervened yet again. In order to prop up the market there and ended up covering. And closing in positive territory actually but there is some significant weakness largely caused by what we're seeing internationally in the number place. Is that what's causing gold that a lot because I'm looking at gold with a strong US dollar it's been treatment Trent is stocks have trended down. I've noticed gold trending up over the last few weeks. You we saw gold I think it was maybe 1080109. B with him the last five weeks yet now it's at 1125. Counter intuitive because gold usually moves in tandem with oil is not doing so this time. Well I think what you're seeing here is the fact that oil is obviously has its own supply and demand issue. Gold right now is really moving on the expectation that the cause of international weakness in the strength of the dollar. The Fed is going to have to push off for slowed down. Its eventual rise in interest rates that would it and and really that's what it's looking at it saying OK if the Fed isn't gonna raise rates as quickly I'd rather sit here and and and absorb negative real interest rates just sitting in cash. He has no how many Americans have. Diabetes in any idea I would guess somewhere between thirty and 40000029. Million diagnosed cases. Of diabetes and worldwide the estimates are that there are 387. Million people who have the disease diabetes. And there's a company called in to Marcia. That is developing a new treatment and what this treatment is it is an implantable pump that actually is put into your body in your abdomen. Exactly what it does is it helps to it's about the size Avaya a matched me OK so it's not particularly large not walking around with you know baseball or anything like that. And what it does is it contains a year's supply of the diabetes drug egg exempt and a examine tide try to perhaps that five times X and tied. And what it does caused implanted in new. It allows the pump to regulate on a more efficient basis than simply. At various times throughout the day this and allows really real time pumping. Based on when your body actually needs it in a very good results in order to regulate blood sugar more efficiently and what it showed actually is there have been some early trials that have been done here. And it shows that it enables significantly more patients to actually maintain their blood sugar levels below the recommended 7% threshold and so. I think that consistently below yeah in you know what happens in diabetes as you start puberty you stop taking your meant. Think that's that's part of the problem that diabetes patients have. Is they feel better in this I don't need treatment at this depth they books it's just like anybody it's the same reason you have all of these antibiotics that people don't take all the way through cycles once people start feeling better this Iowa I don't need it. This essentially says look you don't have a choice it's something that your body is still telling you there's something wrong any idea any competition on the then a number of similar devices that are out there are none that are quite built in this fashion so. I think that you know when you look at it's a huge market in the US especially you look at all the problems that we have with eating too much you know how diabetes develops in a lot of cases. And I think that this is something. That potentially as a huge market there but again this is when you look at it. You know is not available for sale yet acknowledged it's not available to Italy probably hear about probably two years out from being available if they get through the approval process because he's still got. They've done testing on hundreds of patients and one of the things that happens is the the average that the patient who used to pop. Lost nine pounds. Compared to three pounds for the other device which is called to do yet and part of the reason for that is because it better regulates watchers say you're not seeing the higher highs and lower lows this keeps things at a more moderate level and I think in doing that. It allows people to monitor their eating in a little bit more careful manner and and really just respond in the right way to when they do after I'm trying to help you make money on the deal but again it's a private company can't make any money on this right now you can't right now so it's still privately held company. There are some outside investors. And that Merck has taking a stake. In the company in order to own part of it so it directly potentially ruining Merck but. Merck such a big company that something like this isn't necessarily. Going to have a huge effect on the right now when it's not even approved. You member driving buying Macy's as you went up the Everett turnpike. To go to the white mountains of New Hampshire remember that guy go past their old time. Quite a bit and unfortunately that may season in Bedford New Hampshire. He's going to be closing pretty shortly the reason being that it was recently sold to a developer. And what they are looking to do. Is attract new retail office and hospitality tenants into that site about a sixteen acre site there up in Bedford. Right off that road. And pretty much what they're trying to do is build a new larger development there now that's really going to be one of those hybrid development that you see springing up. Are all over the place now those they combine. Residential commercial as well lives. You know some retail there. And so I think it's gonna be interesting to see if we can't succeed. In that area it's it's a great area it's developing there's a lot of business that goes on there on that road already right now. But that type of development hasn't been attempted there yet and there is another Macy's in New Hampshire. Oh yeah yeah right five minutes away it's it's not particularly far even. But it is going to be interesting to see if that type of development. Is able to really get a foothold there just has traditionally you've seen those closer to Samir largest city since Boston Providence and so forth. Manchester obviously a little bit smaller so it will be interesting to see if that still takes off. Open that neck. The woods here's a trivia question for you. What does the word blitzkrieg. All right we are exploring the topic of student loan. Debt our guest expert on that topic is Michael Stratford from inside higher Ed in oh by the way. Blitzkrieg means lightning war who won that trivia question. That was Carl from Belmont taking a petition it's chuck chuck. Chuck Todd and I'll have a cold sores but I've also been called better but it also. Our. Our guest Michael Stratford high Michael Dario. I. Good and I wanted to talk Hewitt and get some clarification if he can help us. On these programs. That are helping students allowed their student loans to be forgiven. At least their federal loans keep do you understand the parameters of the different programs. Yeah that the program have been around for federal. Or while the earth program. Created in the mid ninety's. But in recent years. With them came in and mate back Albert as well as. By the Obama administration. I am the program become more chatter was not applied more about our word. And become more popular and as more students have. That there. Sure sure EE get kids that are you where it seems to be a real problem is with grad school I was reading in that. It is lunatic Kirkland today's Wall Street Journal here's the number. 40% of all student debt is read true road related to grad school. And only 14% of the students have that 40% of the debt so it sounds like. It's a law students med students. Dental students anybody who went on to advanced degrees that really accumulated. Large. Amounts of federal debt. That's right and that's where he's of these order. I like grabbing. Numbers that do about it in two. If it figures. And apple have a large share the dollar. In in well. Or undergraduate. That averages. Thirty. Ranked twenty to 30000 and caps out the Max they're allowed to get this 57 that's correct. Right so. If you bid. Talk to us about the like how do you two I read one program. Where you can have your student loan debt forgiven in ten years and it's a dispute this person 300000 dollars. It on the federal program that allowed that is. There are. If you power. Working paper. Period time. Well protect yours. In aid. Public service shop which is an apartment where her upper. You that your your. Monthly payment and whatever. Don't have. It out after yours for. Does that include. Being a teacher. You know there are. Note Michael does. This create some interest in incentives and I'll I'll throw this out for let's say that I have two people who are both going to become public defenders. One of them has to take out loans in order to do so it has those forgiven after those ten years of public service the other pays for upfront. And doesn't receive that money on the back and that vacate his loans so if I'm someone who's looking to go and become a public defender. Isn't it in my best interest then to take out loans instead of paying it for myself if I could. You had been injured. A good point and and at the program to become more more popular there had been more attention paid to the infected actually work. Graduate student. And people going to law school. By example you gave in and there's been concern palm print them. People are critical of I get hurt about it orbit. Create perverse incentives for. Part of our exit in four but the back side tax payers. That's led to. Sort of Albert I partly that and ultimate is the vomit and or meet its mark in. And benefit for I. People with large. Debt load. That there at that her purse in incentive to borrow. The is there at Bert. Not. What most people think of spore undergraduate debt that there aren't. What about parent plus loans are those federal loans is there any relief for you know we have listeners who. Have taken out loans parent plus loans for their kids to go to college and they're sitting there they got forty or 50000 dollar for the debt is there any relief for parent plus votes. Generally speaking. Income that are in the program. Not that it. The Jenner and we're talking about it now did not apply an apparent plot well. Their. Advocate of federal audit it wound. Would be. Eligible. April and York but it he about it that's. OK so just so unclear. You go to work for a nonprofit. And ten years after you've gone there all of your student loan is is forgiven all of your federal student loans are forgiven. And you just go off that income base model for ten years is that correct. Provided your year meeting the upper part department. Ray you making the minimum payments which are based on your disposable income. And then if you don't go to work for non profit you go to work. And you just don't make a lot of money is it twenty years that I date your loans are forgiven. Under the action. All call girl Kirkland are worked out there. After yours and you have graduate loan. Were editing the query. Now what if you missed payments during that twenty you're 25 years loans though for you lake lets you just were in default. And you didn't make any payments and 25 years goes by are you forgiven from your student loans. Yet to be did you. Used to be good citizen during that 20/20 five year period of time or even that ten year period of time in order to achieve forgiveness of the loans. Our faith that's what we wanted to get to the bottom thank you very much appreciate your time. Michael Stratford inside higher Ed I I've got stats on this that I just feel compelled to to share. 40% of the debt is held by grad students in the represented 14%. Of the students in higher education. Under grads are capped at 57500. Dollars in federal loans. The here get this number though. The the number of all student borrowers nearly doubled to 43 point three million that's how many people have peace in lots of you know we're not talking to a small group of people now talking a 43 million Americans. That are seeking relief in terms of their. They're all programs three point eight million of Americans have. And have gotten relief at taxpayer expense. In just the last couple years. A recent. Move on the part of the administration. Will allow it will cost taxpayers an additional fifteen point three billion dollars. Well and in this doesn't even factor and look what when you look at what student loans are doing okay you are essentially trying to figure out how to pay for someone unproductive years where they're not actually doing anything it's exciting there's simply learning. The problem is when you end up with people paying back student loans at call a thousand dollars a month for the next twenty years. Is that 2000 dollars a month that isn't being saved or isn't being put into the economy in any way so you've had this massive increase in the number of people that have this money. That is now going to something that's already been paid for. You have money that's being stripped right out of today's economy actually it's not going anyway. But there's a moral hazard here what we're doing is we're telling people don't pay your debts. Run up big credit card bills and we'll bail you out would about the idea of saying it in this is how are. In that was my main objection. Like I said look if I have the money why don't I just say OK I'm gonna take up the loans anyways Duma federal program and it'll be forgiven at the end of that you know why would I do that might. I think a lot of people are going to do an in III think this is going to be a program that's abused my preference would be if you wanna go to law school and you can't afford it. Who do for years in the military will give you big bag of money to go to law school student for years of military service you wanna go to college and borrow money before you do it would do for years of military service in the eat. There's so much money but the action's better but at the military has a cap number of people who were able to go into that you get better people going into the military. If you had if he would use and if you started eliminating some programs military has a tough time meeting required LC OC that's two different from what you're seeing right now you're just saying to the federal service on the back and says the front. You're listening to the financial exchange from the insurer match dot com studio. It's glaring terms straw. I'm in the financial exchanged on the financial exchange radio network. We're talking about the top misconceptions. Relating to Medicaid your vocal trust in time a lot of our listeners are apprehensive taught. About transferring highly appreciated assets whether they be stocks or real state to an irrevocable trust because they fear their beneficiaries. Will not receive a step up in cost basis. Upon their death. True or false. Again they should not. Beat out concerned about that because the way these trusts are drafted they will get a step up and remember they should be concerned because most of these that they're transferring. Art house or vacation right they had very little on in buying it. And folks that's what you basis is very little if you pay court. And now it's worth a whole lot more well if you were to sell it they take the value of what you sell at four minus your basis to come up with a gain. Well when you dying. If these are owned either in your name alone or included in your state even reveal one of these trusts and the government gives you the amazing thing called a step up in the east which means you beneficiaries. Get that home that vacation home on the lake as if you bought it. At fair market value on the date of death that your parents died and now if you guys say you don't want it and sell it you salad and you have no capital gains tax to pay huge win so don't be afraid of that put it in the trust to protect it and get to step up in basis. New York's governor reportedly enticing General Electric to move from Connecticut to New York State I believe it's Westchester County. Yeah and Andrew Cuomo has Donna on the recruiting trip and this was actually last month. Went down to visit GE in Connecticut and GE earlier dare you are down if you remember. Had essentially reported that they were pretty unhappy with some new taxes the state of Connecticut was considering they said that it was a state that was unfriendly to business and that they had formed an exploratory committee to entertain the idea of potentially moving. Their facilities to different states now Rick Scott from Florida had gone up in order to law. Potentially make recruiting trip was never confirmed whether he visited GE or not. But this coming from he knew it is confirmed that he visited other companies he did visit other companies would not confirm whether or not he visited GE. And so what you're seeing now is that the governor of new York and Como has gone out and said look. We're going to talk to you about potentially moving across state lines it's maybe 4050 miles to the west and maybe will be able to do little better job for. And I think that if you are. Is G Connecticut loses gee that's a big blow that there's a huge bloated. Big job are huge blow like you though that there's a lot of tax revenue that comes in. And the problem is Connecticut has become a business unfriendly state to major companies like GE and others how many times that we reported. In the last six months companies either moving out of Connecticut or considering a move out of Connecticut it's repeated what I think a major reason for that is because of the way if they've gone about trying to build there at their tax system is. That they have a very bifurcated. For. Structure there are you have you need get a lot of people that don't make a lot of money Connecticut. Then you have this top end is just loaded with cash from the financial sector from you know get you some GE executives. And so you look at this and they're really just trying to taxes people at the top in those people are saying look. Will act as well we're gonna leave you know what we're not gonna deal with us in and what you're seeing is that you're just having these huge tax burdens that are trying to. Paula very narrow group of people and the problem is if one or two of those people leave you know you people. In in finance some of these hedge fund guys that are making a billion dollars plus a year. And they're saying look we're gonna take our money go elsewhere and that's a huge impact of the state that it's not that hard for them to leave. No there really isn't it looked both those people are from Connecticut to begin with and they moved Daryn and quality of life but. They can move to Westchester County. They can move to New Jersey they can move to Florida they can move to Puerto Rico and pay no taxes at all and if they can move anywhere and fly so. You look at it and in this in this saying look why don't we wanna deal with this we're gonna have at a town and that's. It's it's a major impact on the state like that when people there making that much money take off and head out state. Speaking of making money may be your not a billionaire but maybe you've got. 500000 dollars in your 41 K plan in a couple 100000 dollars in the bank. And you get and ready to retire and you're saying to yourself oh my gosh how little I generate income from my investment purple it's a common dilemma you're not alone. This is what happens to people that work for companies the accumulate money in mutual funds in their 401K plan and then they get to a retirement age to get to be 636567. And they say sentiment and I need to take some income from my portfolio. Well we have created a guide that is called how much annual income. Change your retirement portfolio provide. The common question I get this all the time when I meet with listeners. They say to me there I don't know if I can afford to retire yet because I don't know my portfolio would generate enough income for me to retire I don't even know what my Social Security's going to be. Well if you wanna receive the guide it's free of charge you simply call this number 855. 981. 8514. That 8559818514. The guide will teach you about how much annual income. Your retirement retirement portfolio can provide. The guy is free the phone calls free only if to do is call 8559818514. That's the numbers that you give a ring to. Did we get. Winner for last revered did we're still waiting on Quaid did I know that it somewhere and we had a winner on it now I don't know how much are. On the talk about lows and a pull up they are their stock. NO OW. News. In and they're up 22 pennies. How did they do a they the reported earnings this morning yen and a little bit of an interest in earnings report in that they actually beat on their top line revenue so they actually came in with better than expected sales about seventeen point 35 billion vs seventeen point three. But they missed on the bottom line this is the opposite of what we've been seeing from a lot of companies. They did have some pretty decent metrics in a couple different or is three was their same store and yes same store sales up four point 3% so good number that they saw there US stores saw four point 6% sales growth so. You're seeing some decent numbers in terms of those areas. I think that when you look at. The overall expectations in terms of where they're guiding going forward there are some questions that they do have out there and so I do think. In that they do need to continue to show that they are able to grow those sales because that's our company like this. Look you you're essentially in a commodity ties business yourself in the same washing machine in the same door that the guys and extorting you were selling its that you need to be able to show that you can compete in terms of the service you provide. And extras that you're able to really deliver to the key is consumer otherwise you're gonna get eaten alive okay now those. Out 40% the size of Home Depot so they've got some room to grow. But again this is a company that is showing that they do have some growth here and I think that when you look at how their positioning themselves there and pretty decent shape at this. Idea I shop at Lowe's I find them to be pretty darn good story that a guy I like you chuck him low shopper because of convenience that's why goes yup that's right around the corner from my house yep and I can get their quickly. The longest battle. During World War II was the battle of the Atlantic. And it lasted from 1939. Until the defeat of Nazi Germany in the year 1945. I told news trick question. Yeah that that's that. I'm not sure like that I didn't I didn't make the question up I certainly somebody else makes it. Fortunately we did have a winner on that it was out from north east and taking on the teacher so. Someone else was thinking the same way that you were but that's. It's a little bit tricky question. How how what is your tolerance for a week time when you noted Ian. I only go if they tell me it's gonna be less than half an hour and even that I expected to take an hour. Doctor would you well I haven't been a while anomaly if you go once every ten years Larry have something. Yeah eight and renew everything on the line for the most part but I've done and why I guess I apologize to have a driver's license with hair that so. It's frequently I of that yeah I would debate Afro well it's it's got the Advani error I've got this great high top fade it looks and bland to see that in reestablish I don't believe that well. I see the reason I bring it up is Connecticut. Suspended operation of their DMV offices last week and they just reopened. If you go to the DMV office anywhere in Connecticut now you're looking at a week time. A five to seven hours. In the anticipate that that we time will be five to seven hours for another three weeks so what do yet you take it day off from work Netflix. Imagine taking it day off from work to go to the DNC you know I mean that's what people are doing and it's there it's a real hardship now what they're asking. Here the state of Connecticut is requesting that you you don't need to go in until the very end of the month please wait and go in on those late Monday the 31. They wait is long as you can because we closed for a week to reboot their systems and to reduce their technology systems. And the result is you know nobody can go to last week so now everybody all the people that wanted to the last week. They have to go this week and the service was and they did their before I mean you're still a couple of hours before. Way and you look at this there's stories of people getting there at 645 an hour before they opened and if people were already back in line and this you'll have to camp out there. Then it's it's a real problem in Connecticut they had. Major problems in I'm not trying to pile on here but one of the problems that they have news. Connecticut issues driver's licenses to illegal aliens. And as a result of that it has become a Mecca for illegal aliens a day. The neat flock to Connecticut because it allows them to get a driver's it's usually not very many states in the country. That will allow you to do that and and it's cause if the Connecticut taxpayers are very upset about that but they're legislature voted for it was last year. Let's see up next we visit a very controversial topic or recovered anyway we're going to be talking about self control. If you have kids that are driving your family vehicle. You've probably got a concern about then using their cell phone to text email instead Graham or talk on the phone while they're driving. You know I have a concern about it with the adults talker and I've talked about in the past he says everybody on the roads. As is texting and driving I see the same thing you see the same thing. There is a device called self control. That will allow you as the parent to shut down your teenage driver cell phone we're gonna learn all about it I don't understand the technology fully. And the like how much does this cost about to purchase this technology to safe seat protector family. But the device 19 at one time he there are no ongoing government because. We recommend one device per vehicle that you created. Move from vehicle to vehicle what do you you know he kind of started you're sneaking driver and an older car and you you're gonna upgrade them later you can move it to another. OK so it's a 129 dollars per vehicle. And then you're done it's a one time cost. Correct all right what about corporations let's say you're. In the delivery business right near the similar concern about your drivers. You know using FaceBook while they're on their phones checking their emails check in there in two Gramm while they're making deliveries. I've got to believe that a company like UPS would frown upon that type of activity. Actually got a big corporations and small like are starting to crack down that. The judgment against. Employees are involved and distracted driving accident there are huge these days. I grew you. Suite clients certain of our biggest client you we have a system that either worked very similar to our consumer option. Well we can integrate and the current. We deployment pollution into two current element. And got. I checked you have any questions well I think what when you look at this I've been reading a little bit about the device now I know that they can even separate out. Eight driver from a passenger at this point. How how exactly does that focus upon the kid I'm sitting there saying wolf I just hold the phone out in the passenger seat does that work and I'm guessing you've you've tested this to figure out how to prevent that. Yes until we have city and gravity doesn't allow it did divide the figure out where the drivers in the vehicle where the drivers if you can. I'd like you mentioned. Only allowed these passengers. He used visit Bristol yeah we have what's called patent to delay and their. The amount of time it take for the distant view. If we've released. Functionality actually it which is to the passengers don't until we recommend it paired with new drivers. There's you Max that out you can expecting that the minimum delays 32. By that point in time traffic certain news there I have been off road which long it's been incredibly. I kind of enforcement that and prevent the. I know that a lot of our cars are starting to also develop deeper integration with some of their own systems I know. Fortis and integrations with apple and so forth on their touch screen just displays in their cars. Does this allow you to work with those types of systems as well or is it kind of an all or nothing approach. No we can we can work with an interface where entertainment systems in vehicles and actually talking at a manufacturers about. The having art technology come with it and went into the into the future. Might also got so you're saying that in the future you may even looked at just this integrated in a car almost like a LoJack or something like that. That would be to be in our I buy for your car via your kids are gonna drive hitter if you just don't trust yourself. Right they like for you could just read chuck I could buy this for you and encourage car. And it just because I know that your your guilty of this well here's another question just from and and sort of kind of dig into the minutia here. One of our listeners says could they just borrow a phone from a friend who's in the car and use that. Do I did a very good solution work. On. With the Japanese they get Serbia installed on the device until we recommend in that situation as we we we actually get feedback from parent on FaceBook to. Industry groups they've paid by its board church children and then make sure that apps installed on each spread to different groups that you don't have. You kind of try to circumvent that right and a wave side by enforcing it and having that policy kind of infiltrate that group. Well another good thing to kind of start from just distract stopping distracted. Well there on provide. Pretty robust feedback at the incident happened on trips built in addition to getting start. But it stopped notification and it and that route that trip that will let parents now and the drivers you know. On beating. Our scoring and then at the end of that trip provide feedback at how they can. Mitigate this thing. Jesse thank you very much for your time we appreciate it's are fascinating technology it's called. Sell control if the dues Google's self control and you can learn more about it. Well worth the 129 dollars in my opinion.
